CURATOR’S CORNER

IT’S THE MOST WONDERFUL NIGHT OF ANNIE! PATRICIA LYNCH, Executive Director We cannot wait to deck the Hall with glitter and glamour for Opening Night of Annie! It’s the most exciting, magical night of the year! There’s nothing quite like seeing a show when the energy around the theater is at its peak. It’s a singular experience. The weeks and weeks of hard work from cast and crew all amount to this. This year, Opening Night falls

Photo: David J. Murray, ClearEyePhoto.com

on Black Friday, November 29, and I can’t think of a better way to relax after shopping and get in the spirit after the Thanksgiving festivities!

To me, seeing a stage full of talented kids (some from our own backyard!) in Annie perfectly demonstrates the impact that the arts have on children. For proof, look no further than our School Days Series, which is entering its 25th year. And our School Days Series Scholarship program ensures that kids don’t miss the opportunity to see live theater by covering the cost of tickets, buses, and lunches. Your attendance and contributions help make these shows accessible and impactful to all, and I can’t wait to share the excitement of live theater with you this season! TheMusicHall.org

The Arts’ Impact Goes Beyond the Classroom With School Days Series turning 25 this year, Monte Bohanan, our Director of Marketing and Communications, spoke with Anna Nuttall, the K-12 Visual Arts Department Head for Portsmouth Public Schools, about the importance

Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra Swings into a New Season

of the arts in schools and everyday lives.

Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra kicks off another spellbinding season on Sunday, November 3! Our resident orchestra, the PSO will present three Mainstage concerts in the Historic Theater over the course of the year. Including the works of Beethoven, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Wagner, and more, each concert features a wellcurated program designed to delight. And don’t forget to come to “Inside the Music,” a free pre-concert discussion that provides entertaining insight into the afternoon’s program.

exciting, but it engages all of our senses and

On December 31, swing into 2020 with PSO and bubbly! The New Year is fast approaching and we’re looking forward to ringing it in with you and our resident orchestra. This special Champagne Toast will really pop and sweep you off your feet in a luscious display of sparkle and glamour.

compassion. Art can be incredibly therapeutic.

Before the season wraps up in May, PSO joins in the School Days Series (SDS) fun with Carnegie Hall’s Link Up program for “The Orchestra Moves.” This SDS show explores how music moves, both inside and out, with what we see and how we feel. Through the Link Up repertoire, hands-on activities, and interactive performance with the PSO, kids will discover how the orchestra moves. Be sure to catch a Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra performance this season and ring in the New Year with us!

What is the most important reason—or two— that we have arts in education? Learning through the arts is not only fun and exercises so many skills such as critical thinking, imagination, creativity, problem-solving, visual literacy, and more. It’s immersive, and when we

are immersed we can explore and internalize subjects more deeply, make personal connections, and retain more of our learning.

How have you seen that the arts and art classes positively affect kids? I can’t think of a time (in my lifetime) when we needed the arts more. Art is a way for youth to explore both their own cultural and individual identities, and those of places around the world. We learn to feel, touch, smell, hear, and move—while being mindful and in the moment. Students in today’s world need every possible expressive outlet out there is to process and share their own and each other’s stories, ideas, opinions, and feelings, and to exercise empathy and

What's a moment that stands out to you in your career as a “this is why I do this” moment? My students give me examples of this every day, and I love working with so many amazing young minds! One moment that comes to mind was when I was working with the African Burying Ground project, and introducing my 6th graders to the world of public art, and why it’s so important to society: a girl raised her hand and said, “ So...public art is like public speaking, but better because it’s ALWAYS there saying what it has to say.” Bingo.

Grateful for Grants Research has shown that through access to the arts, children gain critical creative thinking skills, increase their knowledge and understanding of other cultures, and use this knowledge to succeed in school and in their communities. Despite recognition of the impressive benefits of arts education, not every student has access to quality learning experiences. The Music Hall has been working with several generous foundation funders to change that, making an array of outreach programs and collaborations available and accessible to thousands of young people from across the Seacoast. We are truly grateful for the continued support of: the Demoulas Foundation, the French Foundation, the Fuller Foundation, the Hesed Foundation, the Rosamond Thaxter Foundation, and the Madelaine G. von Weber Trust. Music Hall programs are also supported in part by a grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT Supporting Students in Need Our beloved School Days Series has been the centerpiece of The Music Hall’s outreach programming for two and a half decades. In that time, we’ve introduced hundreds of thousands of young people to the joys of live theater. Several years ago we began to recognize that even our low $6 ticket price for School Days shows could be a barrier to participation. To ensure access for all, The Music Hall instituted a scholarship program aimed at local Title I schools. (Title I is a federally funded program designed to improve the academic achievement of disadvantaged students. Schools eligible for the program have enrollments where at least 40% of the students come from low-income families.) These schools often lack the funding and support for extracurricular activities like field trips. We launched the scholarship program three years ago, through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, which was matched by D.F. Richard Energy. Although the grant has concluded, our friends at D.F. Richard have graciously continued to provide scholarship funding. Measured Progress, Heinemann Publishing, Eversource Energy, and several foundations have joined in supporting the program and serving students in need. We are grateful for their contributions to this effort and our ability to fulfill our mission. If you work at or know of a school that might benefit from the School Days Series Scholarship Program, please contact Wes Lovell at 603.766.2182.
