CURATOR’S CORNER GO BACK TO SCHOOL IN THE PURSUIT OF TRUTH BRITTANY WASON, LITERARY COORDINATOR & CONTENT MANAGER Despite some time away from the classroom, September always marks “back to school” for me. And I can’t think of a better way to send your brain back to school than hearing from two great literary minds: Malcolm Gladwell and Michael Patrick Lynch. On September 13, Malcolm Gladwell will take us on one of his signature intellectual adventures in Talking to Strangers, going from deception and death to scandal and strategy with historic and psychological data. The host of the popular podcast Revisionist History and author of many influential books including The Tipping Point and David and Goliath, Malcolm suggests that something is very wrong with how we interact with strangers, but he offers us this new guidebook to smarter choices. Make it a whole day of learning and come to TEDxPortsmouth! Michael Patrick Lynch’s research and writing on technology and the internet’s effect on our brains come together in his latest book, The KnowIt-All Society. Michael was last here with The Internet of Us and is an experienced TED speaker—he has been heralded as the “philosopher of truth” by Jill Lepore for a reason. I have it on good authority (*cough* Patricia Lynch *cough*) that this is an impactful and insightful book, so I wouldn’t miss out on this lesson if I were you. Join us on September 24 for a deep dive into core ideas around overconfidence, political atmosphere, and social media’s impact on truth. And while we’re on the topic of learning, if you’re interested in writing, film, or producing, do not miss The Perks of Being a Wallflower author and acclaimed director Stephen Chbosky on October 2. Stephen has been busy writing screenplays and directing blockbusters, but he finally wrote his long-awaited second novel, the first in 20 years and a book the publishing world can’t stop talking about! DAVID CROSBY: REMEMBER MY NAME R
• 1h 35m • US 8/30 • 3pm; 8/30, 8/31, 9/3, 9/4, 9/5 • 7pm; 9/1• 4pm You thought you knew him. Meet David Crosby now in this portrait of a man with everything but an easy retirement on his mind. With unflinching honesty, selfexamination, regret, fear, exuberance, and an unshakable belief in family and the transformative nature of music, Crosby shares his often challenging journey.
YESTERDAY PG13
• 1h 56m • UK 9/6 • 3pm; 9/6, 9/7, 9/10, 9/11, 9/12 • 7pm New from director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, Steve Jobs). Jack Malik (Himesh Patel, BBC’s Eastenders) is a struggling singer-songwriter in a tiny English seaside town whose dreams of fame are rapidly fading, despite the fierce devotion and support of his childhood best friend, Ellie (Lily James, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again). Then, after a freak bus accident during a mysterious global blackout, Jack wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed...and he finds himself with a very complicated problem, indeed.
LINDA RONSTADT: THE SOUND OF MY VOICE NR
• 1h 35m • US 9/14, 9/17, 9/18, 9/19 • 7pm; 9/15 • 4pm A musical biography of one of the most versatile female singers of the 20th century—and one of the most successful recording artists of all time. At the height of unprecedented success, Ronstadt, a restless and adventurous artist, turned away from pop music to explore an astonishing variety of musical styles, from American standards to country to classical operetta before circling back to her family roots with traditional Mexican canciones. Withstanding constant pressure from a risk-averse industry, Linda insisted on following her musical instincts.
BLINDED BY THE LIGHT PG13

MARIANNE & LEONARD: WORDS OF LOVE R
• 1h 42m • US 8/30, 8/31, 9/3, 9/4, 9/5 • 7pm Renowned filmmaker Nick Broomfield’s most personal and romantic film of his storied career. The documentary starts on the Greek island of Hydra in 1960, where Leonard Cohen, then a struggling and unknown fiction writer, and Marianne Ihlen, a single mother with a young son, became part of a community of expat artists, writers, and musicians.
BOOKSMART R
• 1h 42m • US 9/10, 9/11, 9/12 • 7pm Molly and Amy are two academic superstars and best friends who, on the eve of their high school graduation, suddenly realize that they should have worked less and played more. Determined never to fall short of their peers, the girls set out on a mission to cram four years of fun into one night. Directorial debut of actor Olivia Wilde (Meadowland, Her).
RAISE HELL: THE LIFE AND TIMES OF MOLLY IVINS NR
• 1h 33m • US 9/13, 9/14, 9/18, 9/19 • 7pm Often compared to Mark Twain, media firebrand Molly Ivins was six feet of Texas trouble who, despite her Houston pedigree, took on Good Old Boy corruption wherever she found it. Bestselling author, Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist, popular TV pundit, Molly had a nation of “fans” and “frenemies.” She courageously spoke truth to power, and it cost her more than once. But Molly always served up her quality reportage with a heaping dollop of humor.
FRAMING JOHN DELOREAN NR
• 1h 49m • US 9/25, 10/1, 10/2 • 7pm Framing John DeLorean recounts the extraordinary life and legend of the controversial automaker, tracing his meteoric rise through the ranks of General Motors, his obsessive quest to build a sports car that would conquer the world, and his shocking fall from grace on charges of cocaine trafficking. Interweaving a treasure trove of archival footage with dramatic vignettes starring Alec Baldwin, this is a gripping look at a man who gambled everything in his pursuit of the American Dream.

Telluride by the Sea turns 21! Trevor Bartlett returns as the Telluride by the Sea (TbtS) Loft series’ ringmaster. Chris Curtis, film and outreach manager at The Music Hall, asked Trevor about this little (but huge!) festival we put on.
TbtS is now old enough to drink! What has made this event so successful and running for so long? Nothing beats the energy of a big crowd as the lights go down on a movie premiere. There’s a magic in sharing the epiphanies and surprises of these stories together. It’s a rush you get hooked on and TbtS just cranks that to eleven. It keeps seasoned audiences coming back year
Photo: Sydney Bilodeau
Welcome Kristen Bulger! We sat down with Kristen Bulger, our Digital Marketing Associate, to hear a bit about her love of poetry, her time as our UNH MFA intern, and what inspires her about being a part of The Music Hall.
Tell us about yourself, your hobbies, etc. I enjoy reading, writing, watching movies, and spending as much time outside as possible. I love poetry, so that is what I spend much of my time working on—it’s like figuring out a thousand different ways to tell the same story, and I could spend all day talking about craft if given the chance, but I’ll spare you.
What was it like interning with us through the UNH MFA in Creative Writing program? I feel fortunate to have been able to intern with the writers series at The Music Hall, because it demonstrated to me what kind of professional possibilities were available for those interested in the arts. Of course,
after wonderful year and just blows rookies’ minds.
What film trends are most excited about? What do you hope to see this year? I’m excited to see how gender roles, parity, and obsolescent power are structures being more closely scrutinized, both in front of and behind the camera. The #TimesUp movement has been a genuine wake up call to the industry, and has empowered a whole new generation of women to speak the truths of their stories like never before. These are important times.
What is your favorite TbtS memory? One year I talked Bill and Stella (Pence, curators of TbtS) into allowing me to screen a straight up horror-comedy flick called Severance that was so far off the Telluride map, it circled all the way around and got back on it. The audience was howling, they didn’t know what’d hit them. Bikini girls with guns! At Telluride! So much fun.
What’s your big tip for first-timers? There will be very few reviews to frame these titles for you. Prepare to ask questions. Plan on shaping your own impressions. Expect to be challenged to defend your opinions. Get ready to have your mind blown. Also, bring an umbrella. The lines form outside.

capacity and exclusivity, the next best thing is the Weekend Pass, which gets you preferred seating, the Saturday night party, and the exclusive Loft films.
What upcoming events are you most excited about? I can’t wait for Malcolm Gladwell to come with his latest book Talking to Strangers. I really appreciate how he doggedly explores and excavates all the topics he writes on. And I am on the edge of my seat to see what films we’ll get for Telluride by the Sea. It’s one of my favorite events at The Music Hall and I would always drive up from Boston to attend a screening.

PLAN AHEAD Give yourself extra time for parking and food. Make a plan to enjoy at least one of Portsmouth’s outstanding restaurants (many of whom are our neighbors and members at The Music Hall) and don’t forget to make a reservation in advance!
DRESS FOR WEATHER Plan for inclement weather. Waiting in line is seldom anyone’s favorite activity—least of all waiting in line wet. Comfy shoes and layers are generally a good idea too.
PASSHOLDER LOFT SERIES Check out the weekend’s Loft series: films chosen based on a theme and only for passholders. Keep an eye out for swag from our sponsor Coastal Design Magazine, and don’t forget to check our social media and blog for updates and special announcements!

Give the Gift of Magic This Holiday Season Give the Gift of Magic is entering its fourth year, and each year we do this, it seems to get better and bigger. It’s important to us that we spread joy to our neighbors and make our shows more accessible. Through the Give the Gift of Magic program, we hope to bring hundreds of families into the theater to see Annie, our holiday production with the Ogunquit Playhouse, and we need your help. Inspired and underwritten by Morgan and Tara Rutman, Give the Gift of Magic extends a helping hand to local families in need by gifting tickets to those who may not have otherwise been able to see the show. We are so grateful for the donations we have already received from our members, patrons, stakeholders, and sponsors, not to mention our program partners: Haven, Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire, Arts in Reach, Greater Seacoast Community Health, and Cross Roads House, all of whom will help us to get hundreds of free tickets into the hands of those in need! Last year, we were able to shatter our goals. Hundreds of local residents of all ages and veterans were able to attend because of this program, and we hope to give even more this year with your help! Help your fellow community members enjoy the holiday magic of the Ogunquit Playhouse at The Music Hall’s production of Annie by donating to Give the Gift of Magic where you purchase tickets or online. 12

Emmett: It’s an opportunity to reach into the depths of your community, your neighborhood, your world. It’s a way of connecting with the psychic space of our cities on a level that you won’t find when interacting with folks at the grocery store or at work. Kathleen: It’s a great coming together of the community for conversation about new ideas and actions.
Tell us a little bit about yourselves and what brought you here to host? Emmett: The Soldatis live by one rule—if you can do nothing else in this world, throw a good party. We’ve lived those values for three generations in Southern NH and we’re delighted to bring this to the Portsmouth stage. Kathleen: A wonderful member of our community, Erika Beer, nominated us and we couldn’t be happier to be on The Music Hall stage for this.
Tell us more about the theme, “The Point of No Return,” and what it means to you? Kathleen: It’s interesting that it has a WWII origin, the point in flight where there literally isn’t enough fuel to go back and you have no choice but to continue to your destination. Emmett: For me it has to do with an internal commitment and alignment of one’s intentions. A lot of us are always wandering through our work—searching and wondering when we’ll be ‘struck’ with meaning and purpose. There comes a point where we come to an agreement with ourselves that “this is what we’re going to do/this is what we’re going to focus on”...but you have a reckoning with the universe where you say—this is my direction.
Can you give us any sneak peeks into what talks or speakers you are most excited about? Emmett: I’m most excited about Madison Person, the high school senior and artist. Her work is phenomenal and blows my mind that this work came out of a teenage brain. Kathleen: I had never heard of a snow scientist and am looking forward to hearing Dr. Elizabeth Burakowski talk about what we can expect in the future for New Hampshire winters. The event is all-day on Friday, September 13—tickets are still available!

Looking for inspiration?
