MARTHA ACKMANN

An engaging, intimate portrait of Emily Dickinson, one of America’s greatest and most-mythologized poets, that sheds new light on her groundbreaking poetry.
CURATOR’S CORNER HOP ACROSS THE POND WITH A GOOD BOOK! BRITTANY WASON, LITERARY COORDINATOR & CONTENT MANAGER This month, we skip across the pond for both of our author events. We’ll spend time behind the scenes, whether literally as we watch from backstage, or while sitting at the table with the British prime minister. On March 11, we welcome Man Booker Prize winner and the first Laureate for Irish Fiction, Anne Enright at the Loft. Her highly anticipated new novel, Actress, follows an Irish theater legend, Katherine O’Dell, from European stages to Hollywood, as told by her daughter, who is waiting in the wings and reminiscing. This story is not only a wry valentine to the theater life but also a loving reflection on mother-daughter relationships. Full of secrets and in Enright’s lyrical prose, this book is captivating and juicy! The bestselling author Erik Larson returns to Writers on a New England Stage on March 26 with his latest, The Splendid and the Vile. Larson presents a pivotal time in Winston Churchill’s career as prime minister—on his first day, Hitler invaded Holland and Belgium. The book covers Churchill’s first year, when the Blitz killed thousands of Britons and London was under constant attack. Using sources that only recently became declassified, Larson shows the day-to-day life of Churchill and his family in ways both political analysis and domestic drama, all leading to how Churchill worked to get President Franklin Roosevelt on board, and, ultimately, led the country with eloquence and courage. For topics closer to home, join us on April 29 for our event with Kimberly Hamlin, Ph.D. in the Loft, as she discusses suffragist and writer, Helen Hamilton Gardener. We’re also looking forward to comedian and bestselling author Samantha Irby on May 5 and Martha Ackmann on July 30 with her new book on poet Emily Dickinson.

Reading, 'riting, & 'rithmetic with Our School Days Series
BLOW UP 1h 51m
Fri., March 6 • 7pm • Historic Theater $15 (no passes)
We’re so focused on literature right now even the shows are about books! This month we jump back into our School Days Series with two productions, both based on beloved children’s stories. Dog Loves Books, a musical retelling of the tale of a dog opening a bookstore, uses clever scenarios to demonstrate the power of imagination. Then, in The Pout-Pout Fish, a series of adventures in ridiculous rhyme help Mr. Fish learn to turn the poutiest of frowns upside down. We know arts experiences like these can be a source of joy in a child’s day and create fond memories. Beyond that, research has demonstrated the power of the arts to reinforce learning, making other lessons memorable as well. The Music Hall is pleased to be one of the largest providers of arts education in the Seacoast region, making curriculum enhancement and outof-classroom cultural education accessible with low-priced shows and thoughtprovoking discussions. We are grateful for your contribution to this effort, as well as that of our sponsors: D.F. Richard Energy, Cognia, the Demoulas Foundation, Eversource Energy, the French Foundation, the Fuller Foundation, Heinemann Publishing, and the Hesed Foundation. 8
