WELCOME

to our 2015-2016 SEASON Welcome! We are delighted to introduce the 2015-2016 Season, where you’ll find shows not only to entertain, amaze, and delight, but also deep intellectual stimulation—plus a treasured holiday classic presented on our historic stage as an eye-popping Broadway musical. The Music Hall is more than an arts center. We see ourselves as a community great room; a place of rare common space where people of all ages come together to connect to one another and to their deeper selves. We serve as a social hub where you can meet old friends and make new ones. Whether it’s the Music Hall Book Club, the Director’s Club, The Opera Connection, or the brand new Music Hall Film Club, there are multiple ways to connect with like-minded people and dive deeper into the many artistic traditions and diverse genres that we present for you. With our Innovation + Leadership series we bring pioneers and creative out-of-the-box thinkers to the public. Our partnership with New Hampshire Public Radio and our celebrated Writers on a New England Stage series turns 10 years old this season! Brava to everyone who makes this happen, as we are now considered to be one of the top literary series in the country.

Coming up for the holiday season: The Ogunquit Playhouse partnership brings us White Christmas, the Broadway Musical in a spectacular new Ogunquit Playhouse production for two weeks in December. Remember to get your early bird discount now—you won’t want to miss this. In Portsmouth, where the arts are flourishing, we have so much to celebrate and we’re excited to be part of the ongoing cultural story of the Seacoast since 1878. Our commitment to the vibrancy of the area is deep with over sixty community partners. Top artists demand top fees, but we hold fast to accessibility and will have 50+ shows and HD broadcasts this year at $30 and under. Our School Days Series brings first class children’s shows for thousands and thousands of kids for $6 a ticket. Thanks for being part of The Music Hall! Patricia Lynch Executive Director 1

A research professor at the University of Houston Graduate College of Social Work, Dr. Brené Brown’s TED talks on shame and vulnerability have garnered over 23 million views and have changed our cultural conversation. The author of two #1 New York Times bestsellers: Daring Greatly and The Gifts of Imperfection, Brené’s new book, Rising Strong, tells us what it takes to get back up after failure and teaches us how owning our stories of disappointment and heartbreak give us the power to write a daring new ending.

The internationally celebrated bestselling author comes to town with his first novel for adults in seven years, a wonder tale about the way we live now, a rich and multifaceted work that blends history, mythology, and a timeless love story to bring alive a world – our world – that has been plunged into an age of unreason. Inspired by the traditional “wonder tales” of the East, Rushdie’s new novel is satirical and bawdy, full of cunning and folly, rivalries and betrayals, kismet and karma, rapture and redemption.

extraordinary cinema

Film tickets: $10 Adults; $8 Seniors 60+, Students & Military

WHITE GOD R • 117min • Hungary (subtitled) 5/30, 6/2, 6/4 @ 7pm When young Lili is forced to give up her beloved dog Hagen, because his mixed-breed heritage is deemed ‘unfit’ by The State, she and the dog begin a dangerous journey back towards each other. At the same time, all the unwanted, unloved and so-called ‘unfit’ dogs rise up under a new leader, the one-time housepet who has learned all too well from his journey through the streets and animal control centers how to bite the hands that beat him.

WILD TALES

R • 120min • Argentina (subtitled) 6/5, 6/9, 6/11 @ 7pm • 6/7 @3pm A brutal yet hilarious favorite at Telluride by the Sea, 2014. Inequality, injustice and the demands of the world we live in cause stress and depression for many people. Some of them, however, explode. This is a movie about those people. Vulnerable in the face of a reality that shifts and suddenly turns unpredictable, the characters of Wild Tales cross the thin line that divides civilization and barbarism.

SALT OF THE EARTH PG13 • 110min • France (subtitled)

6/12, 6/16, 6/17, 6/18 @ 7pm • 6/14 @ 3pm For 40 years, the photographer Sebastião Salgado has been travelling the continents. He has witnessed some of the major events of our recent history; international conflicts, starvation and exodus. He is now embarking on a photographic tribute to the planet’s beauty. His life and work are revealed to us by his son, Juliano, who went with him during his last travels, and by beloved filmmaker Wim Wenders.

MERCHANTS OF DOUBT

PG13 • 96min • US 6/20, 6/24, 6/25 @ 7pm Inspired by the acclaimed book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway. Filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the curtain on a secretive group of highly charismatic, silver-tongued pundits-for-hire who present themselves in the media as scientific authorities - yet have the contrary aim of spreading maximum confusion about well-studied public threats ranging from toxic chemicals to pharmaceuticals to climate change.

LAMBERT & STAMP

R • 117min • US 6/26, 6/27, 6/30, 7/2 @ 7pm • 6/28 @ 3pm Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp, aspiring filmmakers, set out to make a cinema vérité documentary about the mod world of rock and roll, but were sidetracked instead into managing and developing the sonic powerhouse that came to be called THE WHO. Their gorgeously propulsive footage—the rock documentary that was never completed—lays a foundation for a kaleidoscopic study of an era and a rare friendship’s creative bond.

SEYMOUR: AN INTRODUCTION

extraordinary cinema

PG • 84min • US 5/31, 6/2, 6/3, 6/4 @ 7pm Seymour Bernstein started playing the piano as a little boy, and by the time he turned 15 he was teaching it to others. He enjoyed a long career as a performer before devoting himself to helping others develop their own gifts. While Ethan Hawke’s gentle, meditative study is a warm and lucid portrait of Bernstein and his exceptional life and work, it’s also a love letter to the study of music itself.

THE 100 YEAR OLD MAN WHO CLIMBED OUT THE WINDOW AND DISAPPEARED R • 114min • Sweden (subtitled) 6/7, 6/9, 6/10, 6/11 @ 7pm

R • 100min • France (some subtitles) 6/19, 6/20, 6/23, 6/24 @ 7pm • 6/21 @ 3pm Life imitates art when British beauty Gemma (Gemma Arterton) and her husband Charles Bovery (Jason Flemyng, X-Men: First Class) move to the same Norman village where Flaubert’s classic novel was written. Director Anne Fontaine’s adaptation of Posy Simmonds’ graphic novel is a cheeky literary mash-up, a sensuous romance, a witty feminist commentary, and a celebration of French provincial life.

IRIS PG13 • 80min • US 6/26, 6/30, 7/1, 7/2 @ 7pm Iris pairs legendary 87-year-old documentarian Albert Maysles with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how, even in Iris’ dotage, a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. Special guests for 6/26 screening! THE SEARCH FOR FREEDOM

PG • 92min • CANADA 6/10 @ 7pm • Historic Theater The Search for Freedom is about the infinite possibilities available to anyone. It’s a visceral, visual experience via some of the brightest pioneers, legends, visionaries and champions of surfing, snowboarding, skiing, skateboarding, mountain biking and more. It is about the freedom that is accessible to everyone; the freedom that comes from living in the moment and doing what makes us feel the most alive. “The wave is forming in front of you, the wave is over your head, your wake is disappearing, your footprints are washed from the beach. There’s no material production from having done it. There’s no depletion. There’s no creation. It’s just an aesthetic instant.” — Veteran surf publisher Steve Pezman SERIES SPONSORS: Cocked Hat Ventures; Portsmouth Community Radio WSCA 106.1FM; RAM Printing

COMMUNITY Among our robust community outreach last month was a full-house, free event on April 27, when The Music Hall hosted a community discussion and action session at the Loft regarding the heroin epidemic on the Seacoast. The evening began with a panel of speakers that included Portsmouth police Sgt. David Keaveny; Heidi Moran, clinical administrator for Southeastern New Hampshire Services in Dover; and Sandi Coyle, regional coordinator for Allies in Substance Abuse Prevention at Seacoast United Way. They talked about the state of enforcement, treatment, and recovery. The discussion that followed, moderated by the organizers, Crystal Paradis and Monte Bohanan, covered a range of topics including stories from recovering addicts and concerned family members looking for help; and insights from professionals in the field, community members, and elected officials. The session ended with a call to action, and a takeaway list of helpful resources. More gatherings and awareness events are being planned. The whole evening was recorded and will be broadcast on PPMTv (see ppmtvnh.org for listings). A few days later, on Sunday, May 3, The Music Hall hosted Arts In Reach (AIR) in the Loft for their Phenomenal Women Project Showcase. Mary-Jo Monusky, Executive Director of AIR writes, “The teens were thrilled to have their artwork, journals and poetry on display for family and friends. Thank you so much for this wonderful experience.” Mary-Jo, along with Program Director Becca Romanoski and the other AIR staff and volunteers showed their passion and dedication to the teens from the moment they arrived to set up for the event, bringing care and attention to detail for the sake of the Phenomenal Women Project girls. We are proud to have Arts In Reach as a long-time Music Hall Community Partner.

MEMBERS, SPONSORS & MORE The Music Hall Celebrates the 24th Annual Kitchen Tour

Sponsor Profile: University of New Hampshire

On Saturday, May 9, The Music Hall held its 24th annual Kitchen Tour in Kittery Point, Maine. Participants enjoyed nine different homes along the tour route and experienced some of Kittery’s finest coastal kitchens. We would like to thank everyone who came out for this year’s tour, and a special thanks to all of our Kitchen Tour sponsors.

The University of New Hampshire (UNH) has recently come on board as a Contributing Partner of The Music Hall, formalizing a longstanding relationship between our two organizations. At The Music Hall’s 2015-2016 Season Launch, Executive Director Patricia Lynch highlighted this newly enhanced relationship, noting that the expanded partnership creates “a deeper, more robust and collaborative relationship for us with the region’s leading institution of higher education.” Moreover, she stated that “through this partnership, we will be able to more fully engage with UNH’s community of students, faculty, and alumni.”

Trolley Sponsors: Kennebunk Savings; Churchill’s Garden Center Tour Sponsors: Allen Wayside Furniture; Charles Hugo Landscape Design; P. Gagnon & Son, Inc.; Two International Group; Regal Limousine

As a Contributing Partner, UNH will continue its sponsorship of our signature literary series, Writers on a New England Stage. In addition, UNH students will have greater access to Music Hall programming through free admission to Music Hall films as well as discounted tickets to other select shows throughout the year. As part of this partnership, UNH will also host special alumni events at the Historic Theater and Music Hall Loft. “The University of New Hampshire has a rich partnership with The Music Hall,” said UNH President Mark Huddleston. “Our faculty and alumni appear as expert panelists for Music Hall discussions, and the programming helps us attract and retain great students and faculty. Together we make the Seacoast a community that our alumni want to stay in, to start businesses in; together we are greater.” Photos this page: David Murray/Clear Eye Photo

Deputy Director of Programming & Performing Arts Curator Thérèse LaGamma joined The Music Hall in late 2004. Since then, she has helped to bring countless artists of all genres to the Historic Theater, from John Prine to Natalie Merchant and from Andrew Bird to Feist—and has also been instrumental in building the brand of the intimate Music Hall Loft. Since opening four years ago, the Loft has presented hot discovery acts, popular local bands, and genre-bending world music. Content Editor Regina Baraban caught up with Thérèse to get the scoop on what’s coming next.

2015-2016 Season: Curator’s Highlights

COMMUNITY OPEN HOUSE Saturday, June 27 11am-3pm

What are some of your proudest moments as performing arts curator at The Music Hall? • Bringing The Moth Mainstage to Portsmouth for the first time. • Introducing Reggie Watts to the Seacoast. His comedy is creative and unpredictable. • Planning the first Portsmouth Singer Songwriter Festival with Executive Director Patricia Lynch, and interviewing headliner and Country Music Hall of Famer Merle Haggard. • Bringing the Ukranian band Dakhabraka to the Loft and seeing the audience go wild. • Watching Chris Thile (of The Punch Brothers) take the historic stage the day the announcement came out that he had received the MacArthur Genius Award.

Get a peek behind the scenes with our free Historic Tours (11:30am • 12:45pm • 1:45pm)

Do you have a personal favorite genre of music? I love it all, although I am particularly drawn to world music. World music is influencing so many musicians today, from Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn to popular bands like Vampire Weekend who have taken inspiration from Africa. It’s great to see French-Cuban sisters Ibeyi and Belgian singer Stromae building themselves a fanbase in the U.S., and to see world musicians who are able to successfully meld traditional sounds with more modern elements.

Free Live music by Peter Squires Band at the Loft from 11:30am –1pm.

Along with a huge lineup of artists coming to the Music Hall venues this summer, there’s an exciting fall season ahead. Can you share some highlights with us? I’m excited about all the great music coming to Portsmouth—patrons will have a bounty to choose from! Here are a few highlights: • Joan Armatrading has said this will be her very last national tour. She performs as part of our Intimately Yours series on Thursday, September 24. • Grammy-nominated songwriter Joseph Arthur will be in the Loft on November 14. His music combines poetic lyrics with a layered sonic palette and his live performances often incorporate loop and distortion pedals. He is also a critically acclaimed visual artist whose work has been displayed in galleries around the world. • Fans of This American Life won’t want to miss Ira Glass’ Three Acts, Two Dancers, One Radio Host. It combines elements of dance and storytelling. Aside from attending music festivals, how do you keep up with musical trends? Last winter I trained as a DJ at WUNH and have been invited to co-host a show there over the summer. Radio work has always interested me. I love the idea of exposing myself to what college students are listening to. Whenever possible I am running to NYC, Boston, and Portland to catch shows. The live experience is where you can really gauge the magic between the audience and the artist.
