THE END OF THE TOUR R • 1h 45m • US 9/12, 9/13, 9/15, 9/16 @ 7pm The story of the five-day interview between Rolling Stone reporter (and novelist) David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) and acclaimed novelist David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel), which took place right after the 1996 publication of Wallace's groundbreaking epic novel, Infinite Jest. As the days go on, a tenuous yet intense relationship seems to develop between journalist and subject. Ironically, the interview was never published, and five days of audio tapes were packed away in Lipsky's closet. He becomes involved with a teacher as well as a precocious student, but it takes a dramatic, existential act to turn his life around and make him see the world through a much rosier and more positive perspective. It was unlike anything TV had ever broadcast, and all the more shocking because it was live and unscripted.

Talking Telluride with Bill Pence In 1974, Bill Pence co-founded the Telluride Film Festival in Colorado. Today, he is proud that this festival continues to be one of the most influential in the world. Audiences in Portsmouth can in some measure share this experience through The Music Hall’s Telluride by the Sea festival. The focus of this program is on great film making. As Bill noted, “These are the films that people will be talking about in the year ahead!” While we don’t yet have the schedule, Bill notes the films reflect the zeitgeist of the community and that, surprisingly, themes emerge. He also offered a hint about the accompanying films shown in the Loft, saying the focus will be this “golden era of documentaries!” Titles will be announced the Friday before Labor Day! MEMBERS, SPONSORS. & MORE Sponsor Profile: Jumpin’ Jay’s Fish Café, Moxy Restaurant, and Franklin Oyster House With the 17th annual Telluride by the Sea Film Festival taking place this month, The Music Hall is thrilled to welcome Jumpin’ Jay’s Fish Café, Moxy Restaurant, and the new Franklin Oyster House as this year’s Festival Sponsors. Telluride by the Sea is a highly anticipated weekend that features new films straight from their debut at the prestigious Telluride Film Festival in Colorado. Many Telluride films go on to receive critical acclaim, and, as Allison Crosscup, Deputy Director of Development at The Music Hall noted, “our Festival Sponsors play an important role in bringing the Telluride experience to audiences here in Portsmouth.” Owned by Portsmouth restaurateur and Music Hall board member Jay McSharry, Jumpin’ Jay’s Fish Café opened in 2000 and has been a long-time supporter of The Music Hall. Commenting on this partnership, Director of Institutional Advancement Gail Carolan said, “Jay thoughtfully collaborates with The Music Hall with an eye towards brand building. We're excited to see how this Pictured: Jay McSharry alignment will further enhance the celebrated Telluride by the Sea Festival!” Moxy Restaurant, located on Penhallow Street, is co-owned by McSharry and local chef Matt Louis, who was recently named a semifinalist for the James Beard Foundation’s Best Chef of the Northeast award. In May 2015, the two opened their latest venture, the Franklin Oyster House on Fleet Street. "Our partnership with The Music Hall truly is a no brainier,” said McSharry. “Not only is The Music Hall a great source for arts and entertainment but it is also an economic engine for the city and a supporter of other non-profits."

Dennis Neil Kleinman Previews New Met Season
This month we’re upgrading to a new online ticketing system.
Regina Baraban: Do you recall your first Met @ The Music Hall experience? Why do you recommend it? DNK: I was skeptical about watching opera on screen. But when I saw the Met broadcast of Carmen at The Music Hall a few seasons ago, it was transformative! For a fraction of the price of seeing The Metropolitan Opera live in New York, I could sit in the beautiful historic theater, watch the best singing actors in the world accompanied by one of the greatest orchestras, and view spectacular, state-of-the-art stage craft—all from the equivalent of front-row seats. I’ve been a Met @ The Music Hall fanatic ever since. RB: Any other pluses to the on-screen experience? DNK: The way these operas are filmed and directed; the way these stories are presented live, is truly thrilling. Other big pluses are how the interviews between acts take you backstage to learn about whatever is unusual and interesting in that particular production. It gives you a glimpse into the inner workings of one of the great cultural institutions in the world.

Q:
How can I buy tickets online? A: Go to bit.ly/TMHtickets. We will also have “buy tickets” links throughout our website, just like we always have.
Q: Will I still have my same login creden-
tials? Do I have to create an account? A: For security reasons we are not able to transfer email logins and passwords from the old ticketing system. Members, check your inbox for an email to create a new login. Logging in allows you to receive benefits such as discounts and early purchasing. For events with no member benefits, members are not required to log in. Non-members are not required to create an account or log in to purchase tickets.
Q:
RB: What will you be talking about at the Met broadcast season kickoff party on September 10? DNK: We’re going to look at excerpts from all 10 operas scheduled to be shown this year in the order in which they were written (as opposed to their broadcast order), to experience the grand sweep of the fascinating, turbulent period known as Romanticism. The Romantics are all about storytelling—this was the great era of the novel— about idealism, and, of course, about love. Mix in the vast expansion of the musical vocabulary by Beethoven and his followers, and the Romantic opera composers had everything they needed to create emotional fireworks that can still send a tingle down one’s spine.
NOW
The new system is less confusing and more secure. So we can provide you with answers to questions you may have, we’ve created a ‘Frequently Asked Questions’ page at bit.ly/TicketingFAQ. Here are a few examples to help you.
How will I know what seats are available? A: Seats that are not available will be a greyed-out X that you will not be able to click on. Any seat that is a solid color is available.
RB: This is the five-year anniversary of your Opera Connection talks. What’s the meaning behind the name? DNK: The idea is to connect opera to the life experience of people living in the 21st century. We can directly relate to great stories well told, bigger than life characters, emotional intensity, and eye-popping visuals. And the musical language is built on the same tonal system as today’s pop songs. These connections break down the intimidation factor so people can relax and enjoy opera for what it is— thrilling, high octane entertainment!

You spoke and we listened!
This year is the fifth anniversary of Opera Connection—lively, insightful discussions led by cultural historian and composer Dennis Neil Kleinman prior to several Met @ The Music Hall HD broadcasts. “Opera, above all else, is about great storytelling,” says Dennis, who never fails to entertain and enlighten audiences with his own stories as he connects the dots between history, opera, and modern times. To celebrate Opera Connection’s five-year anniversary, The Music Hall invites the community to a free party and season preview by Dennis on Thu., September 10 from 5-6:30pm in The Music Hall Loft. Content Editor Regina Baraban interviewed Dennis about his mission to connect opera to our contemporary lives, why it resonates so strongly on screen, and what we can expect from the Met broadcasts this season.
Free to attend but please reserve at http://bit.ly/TMHopera, as space is limited. Read the full interview on our blog, TheMusicHall.org/blog

Q:
Why are there different color seats? A: Gold and dark blue-colored seats are the most preferred seats in the house. Lighter blue and green colored seats are typically lower-priced seats.
Q:
Can I purchase or renew a membership? Can I buy gift certificates? A: Yes, memberships can be purchased and renewed. Various gift certificate amounts are available to choose from, as well as other merchandise items such as autographed books and movie passes. We encourage you to check out the ‘FAQ’ webpage at bit.ly/TicketingFAQ for more details. If you have any follow-up questions feel free to contact the Box Office at 603.436.2400 Monday-Saturday, noon-6pm, or email info@themusichall.org.
