on the Historic Theater’s stage, the original score, the classic

movie, and the iconic setting have created some of the most magical (and spooky) moments that I have experienced at The Music Hall. If you haven’t had a chance to join us for one of these Halloween Wildcards, get your tickets for The Black Pirate (1926). It’s a swashbuckling tale of revenge, starring Douglas Fairbanks, with a score that was created just for this showing. If you’re not familiar with Walter Sickert & the Army of BRoken TOys, they are immensely talented and wildly unusual, the perfect match for these iconic silent movies. You’ll jump out of your seat, you’ll laugh, and you’re sure to have a great time. A Conversation with Dan Brown

This month, Patricia Lynch, Executive Director and Executive Producer of Writers on a New England Stage talked with celebrated author Dan Brown, who will be joining us at the Historic Theater on Thursday, November 9 with his newest book, Origin. Learn more about his perfect Seacoast day, his foray into modern art, and what advice he’d give to young authors, and make sure to get your tickets to see him talk about his new book.

The new book, Origin begins with a futuristic unveiling "that will change the face of science" at the stunning Frank Gehry Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain and explores modern art. That's a big architectural change up for our favorite code breaker and symbologist, Professor Robert Langdon, who tends to spend a lot of time in classic buildings with equally classical art. Was it a rush or a challenge to go into the ultra modern? I’ve had so much fun stepping out of the classical world into the realm of modern and contemporary art. Here, masterpieces might include a 30-foot-tall puppy made of flowers, a wheelbarrow with a brick in it, or even a sculpture made of fog. While researching Origin, I was fortunate to spend time with modern art specialists and curators who shared with me their expertise and passion. I was able to ask them the one question that so many of us want to ask when we are trying to appreciate particularly bizarre works: “How do we know when something is great art, and when something is just strange?” The answers they offered me were both surprising and enlightening.

From all accounts you were a wonderful teacher at Phillips Exeter Academy and I know you care a lot about young artists whether they are musicians or writers. What was the best piece of advice you ever got as you were developing your considerable talents?

The Chestnut Street Improvement Project is Underway It’s getting a little dusty on our street this month as the Chestnut Street Improvement Project gets underway. This fall, we are working with the City of Portsmouth to make necessary upgrades. Through our public-private partnership, we are able to bury the unsightly electrical lines, widen the street to make it easier for school busses and emergency vehicles to drive down, and make the currently very uneven sidewalks easier to walk down and plow during the winter months. While all of the construction is taking

One very common piece of advice given to young writers is: “Write what you know.” The challenge is that we often feel what we know is not interesting enough to warrant a book. The more helpful piece of advice I received was: “Write what you want to know.” This outlook encourages a young writer to embark on journey of discovery and research, allowing his or her enthusiasm for a new topic to help fuel the writing process.

place, we’ve moved our B2W Box Office

You have a passion for expanding the reader's knowledge base whether it's art, history, religion, or science, while taking them on a now famous Langdon thrill ride but I find in the core of your books an often deep philosophical question that is complicated and not necessarily easy to answer. Do you start with the thrill ride, the research/learning, or the question?

I always start a book by choosing an ethical dilemma that seems to have no clear answer. (e.g. Would you rather live in a world without science or without religion? Or, if you had to kill half the people on earth to save humanity, could you do it?) The answers to these kinds of questions live in that “gray area” between right and wrong and help me write books that (I hope) encourage readers to examine their own morals as they read.

Mark Your Calendar For Our Annual Online Auction Our annual online auction goes live on Sunday, October 29! We have fantastic items available and we want you to be ready to bid early - and often. Here are a few highlights: • Elephants, lions and zebras… oh my. Dare to mark this seven day and seven night vacation off your bucket list and see African wildlife in their natural habitat on a South African Safari. • Travel like a celebrity with five of your closest friends in your own chartered plane, courtesy of Plane Sense. • One of our most popular items, a Paranormal Tour of the Historic Theater, is back again this year! ourselves of. I think it’s very hard for people not in the same position to find a way to explore the arts. We wanted to extend that opportunity to as many people as possible and feel it was a very fitting time of year to do so, as the holidays are a time of sharing, being charitable, and thinking of others. The whole idea around doing something in a viral way where one ticket sale spurs the next ticket sale was very appealing to both of us.

For those who may not be members yet, what would you say are some of the “unexpected benefits” of being a Music Hall member? Being introduced to a group of people in the Seacoast that I might not have crossed paths with. We really enjoy sharing in the affinity for the theater amongst new friends. So often at Music Hall events, we meet people that have the same warmth in their hearts for the organization, which we both love to see.

On The Shoulders of Giants This summer, The Music Hall was saddened to learn of the passing of one of our founding board members, Norman Ritter. Mr. Ritter lived to serve, from his time in the Coast Guard; to his distinguished career as a journalist, where he spent some time in a Cuban prison before the Bay of Pigs, as well as being beaten in Alabama covering the Freedom Riders; to championing local nonprofits, and setting the foundation for the success of The Music Hall. We are deeply grateful to have had Mr. Ritter on our board for our first six years and extremely honored to be part of his extraordinary life. “In the early days, Norm stepped up in so many ways, from his writing and editing skills that helped make our early communications professional, to securing our first large gift. Norm engaged his boss, Mike Dingman at Henley's Wheelabrator Technologies, to match gifts to The Music Hall of $1,000 or less, up Left to Right: David Choate, Mike Dingman, & Jameson French to $100,000. This match generated some vitally needed capital at a critical time, building the foundation for this great organization.” - Jameson French, Founding Board Member/ Board Member Ex Officio
