CURATOR'S CORNER LIVE AT THE LOFT BRINGS ECLECTIC ENTERTAINMENT TO TOWN Thérèse LaGamma, Deputy Director of Programming & Performing Arts Curator If you are a fan of emerging artists and discovering new acts, then you’ll want to check out our Live at the Loft series. This series is a broad mix of world, country, and pop music. March in New England brings with it the promise of sunnier days, and it is also when I travel to Austin’s South By Southwest (SXSW) to seek out new acts to bring to the Seacoast. This festival and conference features thousands of artists from across the globe in venues around the city. SXSW artists are both renowned (Iggy Pop and Loretta Lynn) and lesser known. Stages are curated by a variety of industry names (KCRW, NPR, Brooklyn Vegan) as well as agencies who take special care in helping to develop young artists. Much of our music programming comes from first-hand discovery. I first saw country artist Margo Price at SXSW in 2016. She became a Live at The Loft highlight last year, playing our intimate listening room to a sold out audience. Today she is generating headlines around the globe and performing alongside icons like Willie Nelson and John Prine. Others who have made it to the Loft include: Great Lake Swimmers, Lydia Loveless, and DakhaBrakha. But the Loft isn’t just a place for discovery acts - it’s also become home to many an established artist, including Alejandro Escovedo, Glen David Andrews, Rhett Miller, John Doe, Shinyribs, Nellie McKay, and so many others! The room has also worked to showcase the artistry of local favorites. All of this at affordable prices thanks to series sponsor The Provident Bank. If you haven’t already, we hope you’ll make your way to the Loft and support live music! TheMusicHall.org

Creating a Healthy Community The Banff Mountain Film Festival comes to the Historic Theater for two nights this month on Wednesday, March 14 and Thursday, March 15. A unique, exhilarating, and provocative exploration of the mountain world, the films take you to some of the world’s most captivating and breathtaking mountain environments. This popular festival has called our theater home for the last two decades and has served as a fundraiser for one of our longest community partners, Goodwin Community Health. While a popular festival is a lot to celebrate, Goodwin is also celebrating a merger with another community partner of ours, Families First Health and Support Center, which took place in January. The two organizations are now under the legal name of Greater Seacoast Community Health and will continue to operate with their current names. “We love our long term partnerships with Goodwin and Families First,” said Music Hall Director of Institutional Advancement, Gail Van Hoy Carolan. “Their mission to make first class healthcare accessible to everyone complements our mission to ensure that the best of arts and culture is accessible to all. Welcoming Goodwin back to our Historic Theater for their biggest fundraiser of the year is a real honor for us.” “Over the last two decades we have been fortunate to partner with The Music Hall to blend arts and the environment while presenting a healthy lifestyle message to our audience. We’ve introduced our organization and mission to thousands of people over the last 23 year. All proceeds raised help Goodwin and Families First provide quality medical, dental, prenatal, and behavioral health care to uninsured and under-insured residents of the seacoast. The merger allows us to help shape the future of health care delivery in our region and to increase access to much needed care for our patients,” said Greater Seacoast Community Health CEO Janet Laatsch. Make sure to get your tickets for Banff in advance, before they sell out.

PARTNER PROFILE Cheers to your next chapter! Last month when we first heard the news that Smuttynose was up for sale, we were surprised. Our thoughts went immediately to our long-time friends and supporters, Peter Egelston and Joanne Francis. As we reflected back on the partnership we’ve had with Peter and Joanne, we were struck by how impactful and pervasive it has been. Many people know that we have proudly poured Smuttynose at both theaters for almost two decades, but that is just the start of our relationship. Peter and Joanne have stepped up each and every time we needed a friend. Joanne has been a member of our board, helping us revitalize the Historic Theater. Together they have supported our mission, sponsored parties, and advocated for us. It wouldn’t be a Music Hall playbill without the Portsmouth Brewery on the back, an image we look forward to seeing each year. Most importantly, Peter and Joanne have been our cheerleaders and true community partners through the good times and the not so great times. Their influence is seen in so much of what we do and we are better for having them in our corner. We are just one of the many organizations that have flourished because of Peter and Joanne. Peter and Joanne, collaborating with you is a master class in community engagement and it has been a pleasure for all of us. While we’re sad to see this chapter ending for you, we join the chorus of voices that are excited to see what you’ll do next. We’ll be right there with you to be your cheerleaders when you do it. Cheers to you, Peter and Joanne! Patricia Lynch On Behalf of The Music Hall Staff and Board of Directors
