A Loving Tribute to Jim Labrie and His City Remarks from June 13 Streetscape Party, delivered by Michael Labrie My father loved this city. Untold numbers benefited from his quiet generosity, thoughtful real estate development, and community support. It is appropriate then that there is a tangible and enduring monument remembering one small part that he played in his beloved city’s history. That part included not only signing the bottom of a check in support of this exciting project, but he also impacted the redesign of the arch in a way that he felt better represented his view of the city, moving to one more aligned with the industrial seafaring history of the people who built and made this city great. Photo: David J. Murray/ClearEyePhoto.com

Thank You to Our Founding Producers!

The Ogunquit Playhouse at The Music Hall series was made possible through the foresight, imagination, and deep generosity of a special group known as the Founding Producers. Their ongoing support helps us bring the very best of Broadway right here to Portsmouth, creating a one-of-a-kind tradition that delights our patrons each holiday season. Please join all of us at The Music Hall in thanking them for their support! David & Karen Della Penta Geoffrey E. Clark & Martha Fuller Clark Jameson & Priscilla French Stephen A. Gaykan Josephine A. Lamprey Jay & Amanda McSharry Michael Pilot Morgan & Tara Rutman Barbara Henry & Nancy Winkley C&J Bus Lines

Thank you to our Corporate Partners 6

It became a nod to the great bridges spanning the mighty Piscataqua, to those who came to fish, and to those who built the great seafaring vessels that served in defense of our nation and networked our city with Photo: Mike Labrie merchants around the globe. These shipwrights, I might add, were the same ones who built our cherished historic theater. Dad was very pleased with the changes that the talented Mr. Terrence Parker made. As many know, Portsmouth has a history of using arches to celebrate important milestones. This fact was pointed out during efforts to permit the arch and written about by Dennis Robinson in articles about the city’s upcoming 400-year anniversary. What great foresight it was to envision this monument roughly 10 years ago, and how fitting it is that our own Susan Labrie will be heading up the celebration of this important milestone. I also view my father’s involvement in this project during his few remaining years on a more personal level. He was a hardworking, self-made man who expected as much effort from everyone else as he put forward. As his sons, my brother Peter and I have spent much of our lives following in his footsteps trying to make him proud, operating small businesses, developing real estate as best we can. Over the past several years, with our sponsorship and my growing involvement with The Music Hall, he could see how much the Theater and its extended family meant to me. He could see that I was accepted here and that all of us together were doing great things for the community that we serve. So, when I asked him to support this project in a meaningful way, he did so without hesitation. When I look up at the arch, I see my father looking down, and he’s proud. Thank you.

Spreading Cheer At The Music Hall we are proud of the work we do to keep our programs and events accessible —both economically and physically. During the holiday season we shift that effort into high gear with our Give the Gift of Magic campaign to provide free tickets to families in need. We rely on your support for that initiative, which was first inspired and underwritten by Morgan & Tara Rutman. The Rutmans have continued their support and, for the second year in a row, Optima Bank & Trust has provided a matching gift.

Last year Give the Gift of Magic was such a success that we were inspired to expand the reach of that program—as well as a program to bring veterans and their families to the Theater free of charge. This year tickets will be distributed by an expanded roster of community partners: Big Brothers Big Sisters of New Hampshire and Arts in Reach are now participating, along with Greater Seacoast Community Health (formerly Families First Health and Support Center and Goodwin Community Health of Somersworth) and Cross Roads House in Portsmouth. If funds allow and we are able to meet their needs, we will continue to expand our reach, bringing additional organizations in to the program. We are also delighted to once again recognize the generosity of Michael Kane of The Kane Company, and Jim Teetzel of Wilcox Industries. These two joined forces to sponsor a veterans night last December and have renewed their support this year, underwriting a fund that will bring 100 veterans and their families to Elf The Musical. In partnership with Veterans Count, The Music Hall will distribute complimentary tickets to thank our honored veterans for their service.

Happy Holidays from The Music Hall Staff!

Member Spotlight: Lesa Borninski This month, we’re spotlighting volunteer and member, Lesa Borninski. James Paone, our Front of House General Manager, caught up with her to talk about the School Days Series (SDS) and the importance of volunteering in the community.

What is your favorite part about the School Days Series? SDS has evolved over the years but what remains the same is each performance awakens a sense of wonder, feeds the imagination, and encourages thoughtful conversation. I firmly believe field trips to a venue like The Music Hall are immensely beneficial for students at all ages as it enhances and expands their world; it can show them that learning happens in all kind of places, not just a school room.

Why is being a part of The Music Hall important to you? My family and I have gotten so much out of The Music Hall that it was a natural progression. It takes a community to be a community and that is what The Music Hall has been to us. I was a volunteer during the renovation and restoration, and the energy and commitment to it were tangible. The Music Hall is an amazing gift to our Seacoast community and my hope is that more and more folks have the chance to experience an event and treasure the venue like I do. THE GREAT BUSTER: A CELEBRATION NR

Just Announced: Our Next Film Club Series Starting in January 2019 COEN BROTHERS: PARTNERS IN CRIME Hosted by Trevor Bartlett Subscription (series of six): $75; Individual Ticket: $15

Working always on the fringes of Hollywood convention, siblings Joel and Ethan Coen have a talent for bending the rules of the very genres they explore. Though their films are individually distinctive, taken together, they exhibit a number of recurring hallmarks—not least of which is a preoccupation with criminal schemes gone terribly wrong. Equally mannered as they can be merciless, hilarious as they can be harrowing, the Coens have staked out a unique place for themselves to play by their own rules.

About the Host: Trevor Bartlett Once voted New Hampshire's Best Film Critic by NH Magazine, Trevor Bartlett has worked in the Telluride (Colorado) Film Festival curatorial staff, and previously produced Portsmouth's Telluride by the Sea at The Music Hall for many years. A lifelong advocate for the arts, he is a graphic designer, event coordinator, and media consultant. He's an avid traveler and adventure seeker, and cultivates a guilty appreciation for trashy grindhouse pictures.

The Foundry Place Garage is Open! There’s a new parking garage in town and it may be your new favorite spot to park. Just a five-minute walk away from our front doors, The Foundry Place Garage is located at the corner of Deer and Bridge Streets. It’s just four blocks away, still close enough to everything downtown. It also offers $1 per hour parking, which may be one of the best rates in town! The new garage also features creative structures in front designed by Terrence Parker of Terra Firma Landscape Architecture (who also designed the Chestnut Street Arch). This piece of public art was chosen by Art-Speak from a range of submissions. Congratulations to him on yet another outstanding project! If you’re coming into town to see Elf The Photo: Monte Bohanan Musical, plan ahead. The holiday season means tough parking downtown, and we don’t want you to miss the show! Make sure your party is able to walk from the parking garage or drop them off in front of The Music Hall on Chestnut Street. Consider coming into town early for dinner or lunch at one of the many delicious, nearby restaurants, too. For other parking options, rates, and directions, check out ParkPortsmouth.com.

SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT Anchor Line Immortalizes Hampton Ford Hyundai If you’re a frequent film attendee at The Music Hall, you may be following the evolution of our very own cinema star, Jay McFarland. Jay is the owner of Hampton Ford Hyundai, our Presenting Cinema Sponsor. You see him on the big screen prior to every Extraordinary Cinema and Wildcard screening. Jay and Hampton Ford Hyundai are part of the McFarland automotive family, where shoppers are more than "just a customer.” Jay is also part of The Music Hall family. When Hampton Ford Hyundai first began supporting film at The Music Hall, we connected Jay with Anchor Line, a full service video production company. Anchor Line is a great partner—for The Music Hall and for their own clients—because of their collaborative style. Together they made a trailer featuring Jay. Last year they made it better. And now the team at Anchor Line has outdone themselves with a clip that lets Jay’s quiet yet hilarious personality shine. I always arrive early so I can grab my popcorn and catch all the previews. I encourage those of you who like to race in at the last minute to do the same. Let the Hampton Ford Hyundai pitch that Anchor Line built be your incentive; the Oscar buzz is thick for this one!
