2007 Annual Report

Page 1

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR “We’re experiencing a renaissance enhancing our historic theater and our programming.”

Last year, in her first visit to The Music Hall, Broadway legend Patti LuPone said it all. “You are a beautiful town. You have a beautiful theater. You are so lucky.” And, Patti didn’t even see the interior! But she’s right – we are so lucky. What would the greater Seacoast community be like without a powerhouse resource like The Music Hall? We’re a well known center of social life and we’re connected to virtually every part of the Seacoast. I look at the transformation of our historic theater and I see a perfect reflection of the world class programming we offer here – both on stage and off. You may know us for the standing-roomonly Intimately Yours concerts, the authors in the Writers on a New England Stage series, the family oriented KidsRULE! series and our Extraordinary Cinema. You may not be as familiar with all we do in our Masters in Learning Program. We provide students with access to Masters – learning in a Master Class with Chiara Civello, performing with Masters like Dan Zanes, or talking to a film director in a postfilm panel. We mentor more than 40 nonprofits in our Community Partners Program, and provide a venue for benefits such as The Capitol Steps for the Housing Partnership and for conferences such as the League of Historic American Theaters. And, we promote the Seacoast with Destination Programs such as Vintage Christmas in Portsmouth, our collaboration with Strawbery Banke; our spring Kitchen Tour; and Telluride by the Sea.

We’re experiencing a renaissance - enhancing our historic theater and our programming with Education @ The Music Hall. It’s happening because people were willing to think big. There are so many people who have contributed to this process – it’s an honor to be here and to be a part of it. Thank you. Patricia Lynch Executive Director

“The Music HALL in Portsmouth ended 2006 on a high note, pulling in record audiences and generating an estimated $4.1 million in spending around the city. Corporate donors also got into the act. A total of 175 pledged $271,000 and donated $100,000 in services….visitors travel(ed) from as far as Boston to hear speakers or see shows…” - Boston Globe, January 21, 2007 1

FROM THE PRESIDENT

BOARD OF TRUSTEES

As the newly elected President of the Board of Trustees, I first want to thank past president Gail VanHoy Carolan for her remarkable stewardship during the last four years. As a board member for the last six years, it’s exciting for me to step in when our programming is so popular, our theater is being beautifully renovated and we’re more fiscally sound than ever. This is the kind of report you want to be able to make to members, donors and patrons – that the funds you are contributing to your nonprofit – whether through donations or ticket sales - are being used in the most thoughtful manner. All the numbers look great. Over the last year, we increased membership from 1,700 to 2,300 households. We increased our patrons from 90,000 to 100,000. We are serving 20,000 school children. 175 corporate sponsors, 25 media sponsors, and 500 volunteers all work to enable The Music Hall to fulfill its mission. And the impact is felt beyond our theater The Music Hall and its patrons contribute $4.2 million annually to the local economy through show and visitor related spending.

“The Music Hall’s impact is felt beyond our theater.”

We have so many to thank for the success we’re experiencing. The Board of Trustees, Ambassadors, staff, volunteers, and you – our patrons, members and corporate sponsors. Thank you for your continued support. Mike Harvell President, Board of Trustees

“MUSIC HALL LEADS EFFORT TO GENERATE OPEN DISCUSSION. Engaging in social discourse is a prerequisite to finding the solution to virtually every problem we face as a society. Here in Portsmouth we are indeed blessed to have people eager to enter into the kind of real social dialogue that could open minds and increase understanding between individuals….This past Sunday, The Music Hall became the venue for the kind of social discourse that can bring people to an understanding of each other’s views….The Music Hall (gives) this small city in New Hampshire something one normally only finds in larger communities such as New York and San Francisco. The residents of the New Hampshire and southern Maine Seacoast are indeed fortunate to have a venue in their midst that not only hosts superb artistic productions and great movies, but is also eager to use those events to enhance the social dialogue needed to really make a difference in this region, this state, this nation and this world.” - Portsmouth Herald (editorial), November 15, 2006 6

restoring our treasured theater

The “Save an American Treasure” Project concludes

This season we celebrate the conclusion of our Save America’s Treasure project as part of The Music Hall’s restoration. Since the theater was federally designated an “American Treasure” in 2003, great things have been accomplished. We gained a new roof and reinforced stair systems. The proscenium arch and historic 1878 decorative finishes of the theater’s interior have been restored, including the glorious ceiling dome. About the Restoration “Music Hall patrons have every reason to be excited….The Music Hall’s interior is stunning… spectacular. The Music Hall’s new look already has the community applauding for more.” - Home & Garden, published by Seacoast Media Group, Fall 2007

The Ceiling Dome and Historic Finishes Welcome to the newly restored, late 19th Century interior of The Music Hall. What you see all around is the return of extraordinary decorative artistry that had been covered over and forgotten for decades – the work of original owners of The Music Hall and artisans from 1878 to 1901. A few short years ago our interior finishes were white, caked with layers of paint and plaster. Since 1987 the Seacoast community has made heroic, successful efforts to save the theater as a not-forprofit presenting house, yet, until recently, little study had been made of its architectural past. Then in 2006 The Music Hall commissioned EverGreene Painting Studios of New York to conduct a historic finishes analysis which revealed the existence of a flamboyant decorative scheme from the theater’s earliest days. Work began on the ornate proscenium arch and a surprise discovery was made of a mural high above the stage. The gilded arch and its mural of cherubs, painted by J. E. Hoxie, a celebrated decorative artist at the turn of the century, was restored to its full, fanciful appearance and revealed to the community. In early 2007, the architectural conservators were surprised again. In the process of removing four coats of paint, they exposed ceiling artwork from the turn of the century. Originally created by W.S. Henay and Son of Concord, the design features grisaille Neo-classical imagery of the Greek goddess of wisdom, music, and war, Athena, within the trompe l’oeil quatrefoil panelization executed in an autumnal, Victorian color palette. “We’ve worked in over 200 theaters, and this artwork was more exuberant than anything we’ve uncovered before,” said EverGreene’s President Jeff Greene. “In projects such as The Music Hall, sometimes the discovery is so dramatic it takes your breath away.” EverGreene combined traditional artistry with modern technology to recreate the decorative scheme that so beautifully reclaims the lost artistry and recaptures the fantastical ambiance. The restored artwork, along with the coordinated work of stenciling, gilding, glazing and polychroming throughout the auditorium, brings the entire room back in harmony with itself, as originally intended. In September 2007, audiences celebrated the restored theater interior in a gala opening night. With such significant and exciting work behind us, we’re on our way to restoring this treasured space for generations to come.

“Today it’s restored to its original beauty….The ceiling and earlier restored arch are a beautiful painting….To many of today’s community residents, The Music Hall’s presence is a given. But in 1987, this latest transformation would have been barely imaginable....Today, The Music Hall, the oldest theater in New Hampshire and listed among American treasures, is arguably the city’s centerpiece.” – Portsmouth Herald, September 2007 12

The Journey Continues

We’ve come so far... The theater’s glorious interior has been restored, but there is so much left to do. How can we maintain this treasured space for generations to come and enhance its service as a cultural anchor for all the community? The Music Hall is at a critical turning point in its history, delicately balancing successful growth – sell-out shows and popular community and educational programs – against physical fragility and age. Many areas of the theater remain dark with age and under-equipped, limited by technology dating as far back as 1878. The Music Hall’s new strategic plan highlights these critical issues: Limited Space - All are feeling the squeeze of crowded lobbies, long lines for concessions and insufficient restrooms, master classes and meet-the-artist programs held in the hallways. Limited Systems Backstage - We’re using 19th Century technology in a 21st Century world. Historic Structure Threatened - Those of you who live in old houses know the challenges we face. Critical repairs must be made to maintain this historic structure - important to the legacy of American theaters and the region’s unique history. Lack of Endowment - The lack of an endowment jeopardizes the long-term stability of The Music Hall and its role as a central resource for the community.

We’re actively pursuing solutions to these critical issues. Our recent strategic work has yielded a plan for the full restoration, expansion, and enhancement of The Music Hall and the establishment of a prudent endowment to maintain and advance this American Treasure. So our journey continues. In the months to come, we look forward to sharing more information and news of how you can join us. For more information call Mia Stendahl in The Music Hall’s Development Office at (603) 433-3100 ext. 34.

THE HISTORY OF THE MUSIC HALL

In 1878

a group of Seacoast residents, including a banker, a railroad executive, a lawyer, a house wife, and a clergyman, all members of the prominent Peirce family, joined together to rebuild Portsmouth’s only venue for entertainment, which had burned to the ground the year before. “The Temple,” as the theater was called, had once been a Baptist Meeting House where abolitionist Frederick Douglass spoke. Before that, it was the site of the country’s first Alms House as well as a prison. The land surrounding the charred lot was owned by the family. Following the fire on Christmas Eve of 1876, the Peirces knew what we still hold to be true, “a community is known to some extent by the character and place of its amusements,” a sentiment echoed on The Music Hall’s opening night in a speech by Sen. W.H.Y Hackett. The opening celebration on January 30, 1878, was followed by the sold-out performance of two well-known British farces, Caste and John Wopps, brought up from Boston. For the next few decades The Music Hall brought the community opera, drama, dance and traditional vaudeville fare from as far away as Europe and as close as our own community players. The famed D’Oyly Carte Company (Gilbert & Sullivan) performed Pirates of Penzance within weeks of its US premiere, and countless Shakespearean actors known around the world graced The Music Hall stage, including Margaret Mather, Thomas W. Keene and John Drew. Buffalo Bill Cody and his Wild West show performed its smaller indoor show numerous times, and Portsmouth saw its very first moving pictures on Edison’s Graphophone here in 1898.

Broadway was well represented, with performances of Peter Pan, Wizard of Oz and No, No, Nanette among many other shows that came to the theater within the first weeks of leaving “the great white way” in New York City. As is true today, The Music Hall was also dedicated to providing support for local organizations to raise money and awareness through the arts. Groups such as The Masons, the Portsmouth Athletic Club and The Chase Home for Children produced local benefits to raise money for their various causes. In 1901 The Music Hall’s new owner, the politician-brewer-railroad baron Frank Jones, envisioned and executed its first renovation. The theater, now endowed with a proscenium arch and stage house, remained a central feature of the downtown area through the mid 1920’s. 33

AN AMERICAN TREASURE FOR THE ARTS

Between the World Wars The Music Hall remained the home of community events and High School graduations, but fewer traveling shows were presented. Moving pictures became the primary entertainment draw for residents of Portsmouth. Though adapted for film showing, the theater could not compete with the three venues created in the teens expressly for that purpose, and went through a period of partial closings that lasted until a Kittery man purchased the building in 1945 at auction and renamed the hall “The Civic.” For almost four decades audiences watched the stars of the silver screen ranging from John Wayne to John Barrymore and were able to catch up on the latest newsreels or episodes of their favorite serial. By the mid-1960s, the Hall had been leased to movie palace mogul E.M. Loew and operated in tandem with his other theatre, The Colonial, in Market Square. After another brief period of closure and trip to the auction block, The Music Hall was once again re-opened. Thanks to the generosity, hard work and foresight of a group of concerned residents known as The Friends of The Music Hall, who followed in the footsteps of the Peirce Family of more than a century before, the theater emerged as nonprofit center for the performing arts in 1988. Now the only remaining venue of its kind in Portsmouth, The Music Hall operates as it did in 1878, bringing the region world class entertainment, both live and on film, and providing a meeting place for members of the community to laugh and cry, learn about the world around them and teach their children. In recent years the theater has welcomed such bright stars as Wynton Marsalis, Alan Alda, Patti LuPone, John Updike and Crosby & Nash. Grammy, Tony and Pulitzer Prize winners have graced the stage in performances unique to the region. As it has for five generations, The Music Hall continues to serve the greatest variety of audiences, cultural and not-profit partners.

The Music Hall opens it doors for historical tours, providing backstage access and facilitating historical discussions with local schools, groups, tourists and individual historians. The staff works closely with Portsmouth’s many historical associations and museums to promote a further understanding of Portsmouth’s unique history.

education@the music hall Inspiring Dreams, Building Community

From a June 2007 letter from New Outlook Teen Center (Exeter, NH) thanking The Music Hall for its Meet the Masters program and the backstage visit of 10 teens with Intimately Yours singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile:

“It is not often that the teens here at the New Outlook Teen Center have an opportunity like the one we had Friday, and I can say without a doubt that it was a night we will always remember.

For one teen in particular, the impact was immeasurably positive – she left The Music Hall that night a changed person. The backstage meeting and the gift of the concert touched her relationship with her family and her view of herself in the world. Thank you for all you did for us and for what you do in the community. Your generosity and compassion make such a difference in so many lives!” Warmly, Whitney Blethen, Teen Center Coordinator To learn more about The Music Hall’s community impact, partnerships and educational programs, see pages14-16

Having the opportunity to meet the singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile backstage was so exciting. She made us feel as though she was just as excited to talk to us as we were to talk to her. We all enjoyed the fantastic insights she gave into her music and her life as a singer. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping to make all the girls feel so important and special.
