Congratulations to the winners of our Diana Krall date night package — Tom and Heather Kirwin! In February, our lucky winners were entered into a drawing when they became a new member and, in addition to their new Music Hall membership, received a $100 gift certificate to Rudi’s Portsmouth, 2 tickets to Diana Krall and a night’s stay at The Hotel Portsmouth. We have attended concerts at the Hall before and recognize it as a unique treasure for Portsmouth. What show are you most excited to see at the theater? We’re looking forward to the John Hiatt & Lyle Lovett show in April! In a dream world, what artist would you love to see at the Hall? We’d love to see Amy Black with her band at the Music Hall Anything else to add about The Music Hall? We love seeing live music in intimate venues like The Music Hall!

2015 Kitchen Tour: The Inside Scoop from Ann Kendall

From cottage homes to contemporary houses, take a peek inside some of the finest coastal kitchens in Kittery Point, Maine during our 2015 Kitchen Tour on Saturday, May 9. This year also features the addition of more trolleys to easily transport patrons from home to home. Why do we expect this to be our best Kitchen Tour so far? Content Editor Regina Baraban recently got the inside scoop from Ann Kendall, a long-time supporter of The Music Hall and the Seacoast Arts Community, who serves on The Music Hall Board of Directors and is co-chair for this year’s Kitchen Tour Committee. Ann’s home in Kittery, with its sunlit, state-of-the-art open concept kitchen, is on the tour this year. She filled us in on what’s new, and why the tour makes the perfect Mother’s Day outing. RB: What’s new and exciting on this year’s Kitchen Tour? AK: Now that we are using trolleys, we can include homes that were unavailable to us in the past. So besides finding homes and willing homeowners; writing descriptions of the homes and lining up sponsors (vendors and designers from each home to showcase their work and other businesses in the area who want to support The Music Hall); we have learned about traffic engineering! This year the trolley routes will be more like a mini train line with hubs rather than one big route. With six trolleys, this should be a great experience for all. RB: Fill us in on what makes this year’s kitchens special. What design styles can visitors expect to see? Are there any interesting stories about the homes that you can share? AK: This year we are excited to have homes from the 1800’s, new construction, remodels, and even a small “green” home. My home has many green features as well. All the homeowners—with the help of their architects, builders, and designers—have created homes that work for their lifestyles. The Marra-McCarten home was bought and remodeled by Kathleen while her husband was deployed in Afghanistan. The artisans worked through the night to have it ready for his homecoming. The Nagle home had three architects. Their primary architect bases his work on Oriental Feng Shui, which focusses on the spirit of the place from start to finish, from kitchen to attic. The Erikson beach home will be their future retirement home but meanwhile it welcomes a houseful of friends and family—up to 23 overnight guests can be accommodated at at an amazing dining table! These are just a few of the great stories this year. RB: Why does the tour make a great Mother’s Day gift? AK: This year we have the perfect date on May 9, Mother’s Day weekend. Historically, we have seen many mothers and daughters go on the tour!

From Alt-Rock Reunion to Soulful Folk: Portsmouth Singer Songwriter 2015 by Thérèse LaGamma, Deputy Director of Programming We are thrilled to be presenting an immensely talented lineup of artists for our fourth annual Portsmouth Singer Songwriter Festival, April 16-18. Don’t miss hearing what Portsmouth Music and Arts Center students have been up to during a Youth and Teen Round Robin on Thursday, April 16 at the Loft. Then join us in the Historic Theater for a dynamic double bill to kick off the weekend: Independent rock musicians Buffalo Tom and The Juliana Hatfield Three. Like many bands that rose to prominence in the ‘90s, The Juliana Hatfield Three are reuniting after a significant number of years apart — much to the delight of their fans. This past February, they released their first album in twenty-two years, playing music that has evolved and matured with time. Buffalo Tom inaugurated the Music Hall Loft four years ago in an acclaimed live radio broadcast with two sold out shows, and we can’t wait to hear their uncompromising and rootsy rock & roll on our big stage. More amazing talent is coming to our Historic Theater on Saturday, April 18. The name William Fitzsimmons may be unfamiliar to some—but his songs may not be. Mixing folk with electronica and performed on guitar, banjo, ukulele and mandolin, his music has made its way onto television and radio and earned him rightful comparisons to Iron & Wine and Sufjan Stevens. He opens for Citizen Cope. Rolling Stone writes, “Cope melds hip-hop with folk, soul and blues...and ‘feels’ this combination deeply....Cope’s uncommon chords and harmonies combine delicate dissonance with unexpected flashes of beauty...” And the Washington Post calls him the “City’s most soulful export since Marvin Gaye.” Each will perform a special solo acoustic show for the first time on our stage. Also on Saturday, April 18 in the Loft, we are thrilled to welcome back Guy Capecelatro III in an artist curated Songwriters in the Round. Please join us for this special spring celebration that brings together fans and musicians during one of our favorite times of the year in Portsmouth—when warmer weather, Restaurant Week, and great music make an unbeatable weekend destination. Hope to see you there!
