Winner of the Jury Prize in Un Certain Regard this year in Cannes, this wickedly funny and precisely observed psychodrama tells the story of a model Swedish family on a skiing holiday in the French Alps. The sun is shining and the slopes are spectacular but, during lunch at a mountainside restaurant, an avalanche occurs. No one in the family is hurt, yet everything is turned upside down. “Redefining courage and family...You won’t know what hit you.” — ROLLING STONE

When estranged twins Maggie (Kristen Wiig) and Milo (Bill Hader) feel they’ve reached the end of their ropes, an unexpected reunion forces them to confront why their lives went so wrong. As the twins reconnect, they realize the key to fixing their lives may just lie in repairing their relationship. “This is a smart movie. Wiig gives maybe the most impressive performance of her career, and Hader is equally good. ” — RICHARD ROEPER

Kat Connors is 17 years old when her perfect homemaker mother, Eve, a beautiful, enigmatic, and haunted woman, disappears. Having lived for so long in a stifled, emotionally repressed household, Kat barely registers her mother’s absence and certainly doesn’t blame her doormat of a father for the loss. But as time passes, she begins to come to grips with how deeply Eve’s disappearance has affected her. “[An] evocative, gorgeous, occasionally maddening film.” — WASHINGTON POST

EXPLORE + LEARN Poet Billy Collins Visits the Loft On October 21, Billy Collins, former US Poet Laureate, came to The Music Hall Loft to give an intimate reading and hold an open discussion about poetry and his work, as part of the Writers in the Loft series. Prior to the doors opening and the audience taking their seats, Collins was kind enough to sit down with four students from the University of New Hampshire’s MFA in Creative Writing program. During their discussion, Collins freely spoke about the writers who have influenced him over the years, those he is currently reading, as well as what it means to build a poem. —KRISTEN BULGER, UNH MFA POETRY & MUSIC HALL INTERN Photo, left to right: Kristen Bulger (MFA Poetry & Music Hall Intern), Kate Ver Ploeg (MFA Nonfiction), Collins, Holland Prior (MFA Nonfiction), and Sarah Earle (MFA Nonfiction).
Our Tradition of Community Outreach Continues The Music Hall continued its tradition of community outreach this fall with a robust lineup of initiatives—from student meet & greets with writers and artists to hosting a panel discussion with local farming experts following an important new documentary about sustainability and urban farming. Among the highlights: October 23: After screening the uplifting documentary American Bear: An Adventure in the Kindness of Strangers in our Film Matters series, the young filmmakers Greg Grano and Sarah Sellman joined us in the Hall to speak about their experience. October 29: For the third year, we partnered with Portsmouth Halloween Parade to feature a classic silent film with a live musical score performed by Boston’s Walter Sickert & The Army of Broken Toys. November 13: Our Film Matters series featured Alive Inside, a new documentary about the power of music to heal when standard medicine fails. Presented in affiliation with PMAC and UNH. November 19: Film Matters presented Growing Cities, a new documentary about the growing Urban Farming movement. A terrific panel of local urban farming experts led an enlightening discussion about everything from backyard and city gardening to local Farm to School Programs. November 24: PMAC students and Arts in Reach teens had a fantastic Meet & Greet with the extraordinary Ukranian group DakhaBrakha, who performed in The District Restaurant Singer Songwriter Series in the Loft on November 23. PLUS! We had hundreds of local wee-ones in the house for our School Days Series: Skippyjon Jones shows on November 19. Some seats are still available for School Days Series: Curious George on December 4 at 9:30am &11:30am!
Vintage Christmas Celebrates the Season in Style There’s no other place quite like Portsmouth, NH to experience a joyous holiday season. For the entire month of December, this quintessential New England city, first settled in the early 1600’s and today a hub of modern culture and cuisine, is transformed into what Travel & Leisure magazine called “the Christmas capital of America.” Now in its 10th year, the hugely popular Vintage Christmas in Portsmouth, presented by The Music Hall and Strawbery Banke Museum, features fun holiday activities every day of the week. Once again, the wildly successful Vintage Christmas Trolley, a free service provided by the City of Portsmouth, will ferry visitors from free parking lots to in-town destinations, and also to give them a brief overview of Portsmouth, all decked out for the holidays.
New for 2014: A big Broadway show at the Music Hall, and at Strawbery Banke, an outdoor ice skating rink, retail
shop, and cafe. Continuing their partnership, The Music Hall and The Ogunquit Playhouse are proudly presenting the thrilling, high-flying musical Mary Poppins December 10-14. “It’s a special treat for the whole family,” says the Music Hall’s Executive Director Patricia Lynch. “The critically acclaimed Ogunquit Playhouse Production of Disney’s and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins, the Broadway Musical is going to make the holiday season and Vintage Christmas in Portsmouth Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!” And at Strawbery Banke, the new 12,500-square-foot Puddle Dock Pond seasonal outdoor ice skating rink, will be in full operation seven days a week throughout December and beyond. Pre or post-skating, visitors can check out two retail establishments: the White Apron Cafe for tasty food and drink, and Pickwick’s on the Banke for a local shopping experience.

We are thrilled to welcome back Juston McKinney, a Music Hall all-star fan favorite. One of the Seacoast of New Hampshire’s acclaimed creative talents, the extraordinarily funny McKinney honed his craft performing standup in the comedy clubs of New York City. The New York Times has predicted that he is “destined for stardom.” A well known television performer, his stand-up has been featured on Comedy Central and the Tonight Show, and his impressive resume also includes acting roles on some of the better known sitcoms. These days, Juston not only keeps busy at his craft but also as a father of two young boys (pictured above). Our Deputy Director of Programming and Performing Arts Curator, Thérèse LaGamma persuaded him to take a break from his busy schedule and answer a few questions in anticipation of his upcoming show Juston McKinney’s Last Laugh 2014 on Saturday, December 27. LaGamma: Juston, what is it that is keeping you busy these days project-wise? McKinney: Since June I have been developing a sitcom with Courtney Cox and David Arquette’s production company, based on my stand-up. Hopefully something comes of it, smile.
“This year, I’ll treat everyone I love to Mary Poppins tickets.” — Patricia Lynch, Executive Director

LaGamma: Who are some of the comedians that influenced you as a child? McKinney: There were many. George Carlin, Eddie Murphy, Sam Kinison, Rodney Dangerfield, and Jerry Seinfeld were all some of my favorites before I got into my own comedy. LaGamma: Who do you most admire in comedy today? McKinney: I would have to say Seinfeld because he is still doing it, when he clearly doesn’t need the money. LaGamma: Any special message you’d like to give to your fans about your upcoming show this December 27? McKinney: Yes, please come. Because I clearly need the money. LaGamma: What are you most excited about regarding your return to The Music Hall stage? McKinney: The commute. I live 18 minutes away. But more seriously, having grown up on the Seacoast, it’s always special to come home.
