So here’s the ticket: instead of sweating all the details of a kitchen remodel – and there are tons of them – you purchase a recently (2010) built and very gorgeous home with a fabulous kitchen all ready to go. The previous homeowner was the builder, and the time he spent in Scandinavia shows throughout the home. You’ll know this place when you come to it, with its spare exterior design and landscaping and a bright tangerine orange wall street side. That same eye-popping color is repeated on the cabinets in the spacious and modern kitchen, which boasts a lot of storage, sleek appliances, poured concrete countertops, and a stainless steel farm sink. There is no wasted space in this artful yet oh-so-functional kitchen. It is energy efficient, and has a heated slab foundation, three-zone controlled radiant heated floors, and a heat recovery ventilation system that brings in fresh air. The details in this delightful kitchen are numerous and perfectly executed. This is how you make modern magnificent.

You’re going to love this kitchen. The owners clearly loved designing it and drew inspiration from the years they lived in Europe. They wanted functionality and simplicity in a calm living space. Their vision was realized in a kitchen that is at once simple and oozing wonderful details. A window as a backsplash, for example. Who does that? These clever homeowners did, and to great effect. The floating shelves here are beautiful; the lines are so clean it’s hard to tell where the refrigerator is; the island comprises three different materials and shows off a terrific waterfall edge. Sure, it’s a minimalist design, but there’s maximum wow factor. Consider the frameless door to the basement, the “magic” storage corner you have to see to believe, and the barn door the owner lovingly crafted with his father out of Vermont white pine. And those pendants over the table? They’re rubber! This home and kitchen were designed with family in mind. The kitchen flows beautifully from the living area in the front of the house and is so full of thoughtful design and function. It is a calm space, but it’s exciting to see!

You’ve got to love a remodeled kitchen with an impressive coffered ceiling above and a children’s play table below. How perfect for a couple, themselves involved in the design and construction business, who wanted to make the kitchen the family gathering spot. Something for everyone: fabulous features for adults and little ones alike. This kitchen is airy and light, made so in part by a smartly designed wall of windows. The concept is open, and that effect is enhanced by the tall ceilings and exposed stairway. There is a massive amount of counter space, including on the good-sized island. The palette here is light gray and white, and the deeply rich and dark floors offer up an exceptional contrast. The homeowners designed the kitchen layout themselves, and their attention to detail is evident: the space is workable, inviting, and truly beautiful. It’s also functional, with hidden outlets under cabinets to keep the backsplash clean, power outlets in a drawer and cabinets, and a touch-sensitive faucet. These homeowners now get to enjoy the kitchen they envisioned, designed, and produced. A job expertly done!

The Van Splunder Home

This busy family has lived in their 1882 home for about 16 months. They love it, but knew renovation was in order. The kitchen was a blank slate. Oh, the artistry that ensued! And not just in the kitchen, but off it. A pantry was walled off and converted to a half bath, and the entrance there was relocated. How fun that the inspired design plans here enhanced more than just the kitchen. As for the kitchen itself, the homeowners wanted improvements, but not at the expense of the home’s historic feel. They kept the tin baseboards and original floors, for example. As for new additions, check out the beautiful recycled glass countertops. The color is Savaii, inspired by the Polynesian beauty of Samoa’s largest island. In a quest for function, they installed a dish rack above the sink that was custom made by someone they found on Etsy. They stained it themselves to fit in with the room’s palette. Good kitchens have fun elements, and one of them here is the window bench. The owners love it. They painted the nearby tin baseboards blue, which now look great with the Dark Ocean Breeze backsplash. This once blank slate has taken on fine form.

HOMEOWNER’S FAVORITE PARTS: “Our favorite part of our new kitchen is the huge bench beneath the window. It’s the perfect perch for our cat to stalk squirrels on the bird feeders outside and for our kids to stand on to “help” make dinner. Our Mom sewed a beautiful custom fit cushion for the bench so it also serves as a comfy spot for drinking our morning coffee. Also, there is also a huge drawer underneath that provides a ton of extra space for storing baking dishes. Mari Woods respected our design inputs and ideas and made our dream kitchen a reality and we are so very grateful.”

When you’re in a beautifully designed smaller kitchen, you don’t notice size. You notice how everything in the space is just so right. And so it is with this kitchen. The owner was after a mid-century modern feel with clean, simple lines. She got all that and a large dose of charm. The palette is largely gray, yellow, and white, a nice setting for the perfect light fixtures and stainless appliances. The countertops are concrete and jibe so nicely with the clean backsplash. Just off this space is a family gathering room, so it’s great that the kitchen looks so appealing. But where is the pantry, you ask? Well, it’s tucked away behind the clever chalkboard façade. There’s plenty of space for food inside the pantry and plenty of space on the chalkboard for grocery lists, family notes, or beautiful art. This home, inviting throughout, was built in 1900. The renovation took place 114 years later. This kitchen was worth the wait.

This beautiful home was built in 1933, and the current homeowners wanted to keep the look and feel of that era when they renovated last year. They also wanted to add modern amenities and enhance the functionality of the space. They got everything they wanted and created a lovely space for cooking and conviviality. What you will see is an open kitchen with the colors of nature playing off the gorgeous wood of the window frames (now framing all new windows), molding, and floors. Look how well the white custom cabinetry — including the glass-fronted piece — melds with the wood and the walls and the subtly perfect island color. The cherry pantry is so attractive, including the windows atop that showcase pretty pieces. What you won’t see at first is the microwave drawer, the push-button garbage disposal, and the very handy Lazy Susan in a corner cabinet. The folks who have owned this home for a decade wanted a light-filled and open kitchen space for family gatherings. Their vision was realized with modern kitchen amenities and an inviting dining area just steps away. It’s light and lovely and quite clearly happily lived in.

106 Spring St.

Photo: Sydney Bilodeau

These homeowners had never renovated a kitchen before. Boy, did they get it right the first time! They met their goal of creating an inviting space for family and guests. The kitchen is this family’s gathering place, and it’s been made a lovely place in which to come together. The kitchen walls are a happy asparagus green and seem the perfect shade to go with the adjacent screened-in porch, where dinner is eaten in spring through autumn. All the earthy tones seem an extension of the nature outside the windows: the green, black (Jet Mist black granite), wood, and white (including Glacier White granite, painted ceiling, and cabinetry). You have to love the club chairs right there in the kitchen space. How welcoming is that? And note the abundant storage space. This house was built some time in the late 19th century. The 2011 renovation added lots of updates but certainly kept the time-honored tradition of making the kitchen the pulsing heart of the home.

1900 Dark Blue Victorian

Photo: GregWestPhotography.com

People who remodel their kitchens with purpose and inspiration have such great stories to tell. This kitchen was inspired by... their last kitchen! What a great spot that must have been because this space is awesome from stem to stern. Just as in their last home, they have a banquet table and couch-seating arrangement right by French doors that open to the backyard. The huge natural cherry and reclaimed oak farmer’s table that sits as the centerpiece of the kitchen is a sight to behold. So, too, are the exquisite Calcutta Gold marble countertops. The refrigerator is big, yet unobtrusive, and right next door to it is cabinetry that craftily houses a coffee maker, toaster, and other needs of a proper kitchen. Make sure to peek into the nearby butler’s pantry, with its stunning Naples blue cabinets. And don’t miss the art here and there, especially “Lobsterman,” by Rhode Island-based artist David Witbeck. It hangs over a sitting area right next to this exceptional kitchen.

The farmer’s table is a favorite because of the size, detail, craftsmanship, functionality—and the fridge! Of course, the Calcutta Gold is awesome too - we love it all!”

Pay close attention as you walk through this kitchen. There are some terrific details throughout. The homeowners lived here for many years before deciding to renovate the kitchen, so they knew what they wanted: a welcoming space that maximized natural light and provided a good work and play flow for family and friends. Mission accomplished. Notice the deep windowsill behind the large sink, the happy home of several sun-drenched plants. The open shelves made of reclaimed wood are charming, and feel so right with the nearby live edge wood top of a desk adjacent to but somehow still part of the kitchen. The concrete countertops continue throughout the space and into the living area and contrast nicely with the pale blue backsplash tiles. See the heirloom cherry cabinet? It’s being used as a pantry. The homeowners chose an extra tall refrigerator, and even simple stainless steel looks good in the plentiful light coming in through the large windows over the sink. The designer, contractor, and homeowners collaborated on every step of this renovation. Such teamwork produced one fantastic kitchen.

This homeowner wanted a timeless yet modern design for her kitchen remodel. Is that even possible? Oh, you bet. This renovation was done nearly 10 years ago and remains so, so pleasing. Whatever your design preference, you will love this space with its clean lines and minimalist feel. Notice how the sleek, rich wood and subtle colors artfully bring a warm feel to a largely modernist room? There are some wonderful touches here: the refrigerator and dishwasher are built into custom walnut veneer cabinetry for an unfettered, streamlined look; the upper cabinets perch above gorgeous floating shelving; the Caesarstone-covered island is a grand centerpiece for a kitchen that opens to the living and dining areas one way and a screenedin porch the other. There’s great flow here in terms of both design and aesthetic. Folks who visit here are struck by the traditional exterior of this 1868 home and its modern feel within. Who says you can’t have it all?

Stella Maris

Photo: GregWestPhotography.com

This homeowner said the favorite part of her 2016 redesign and remodel was imagining friends and family sharing dinner and making memories around the island in the kitchen. She wanted the kitchen to be the heart of the home. With a goal like that, the space had to end up sublime. And it did. It also ended up in a more central location, moved from the back of the home. Plans were drawn. Walls were demolished. Magic was made. This kitchen that now beats with the happy hum of those who visit it is light and bright. Note the large windows and color choices that produce that effect. The beautiful backsplash choice falls in line as do the decanter pendants imported from England. There is such a pleasantness about this space. But function, too. The handy microwave is hidden in a base cabinet of the island. The swivel chairs around the island from the homeowner’s reveries provide a front-row view of this first-rate kitchen. This beautiful home was built in 1902 and attentively renovated to honor the past even while dressing it up in the best of 21st Century finery. Known as Stella Maris, “The Star of the Sea,” it is aptly named and fabulous to be in. It is very much a part of a great neighborhood, so, fittingly, another favorite improvement for the homeowner was the new kitchen’s connectivity to a very welcoming front porch that looks out on the street. Stella Maris is a special place. •••
