Girls Night at Mama’s Night Out! by LAURA SMITH, Director of Institutional Advancement
As we gear up for the upcoming Mama’s Night Out evening of female stand-up comediennes on Friday, October 22, I sat down with board member and supporter Elisabeth Robinson to ask for some motherly advice and her idea of an ideal night out with the ladies… What advice would you give to parents with younger children? Enjoy the warmth, humor and adventure of the whole ride. Always be mindful that it is a journey, not a race. The most awkward, rough and funky moments develop into wonderful lessons for all involved. Forgive yourself – you will make mistakes... (many of them). And, finally, your love and positive intentions are the most important thread throughout the years. In your opinion, what is powerful about a group of women? The collective force of a roomful of women is a phenomenon. Women, as a collective, are humble, gracious, socially intelligent, supportive and LOVE to have fun.Our humility enables us to laugh at
ourselves, each other and the crazy ‘ought to’ voices which drive us into the ‘worker bees’ that we become. So when we gather we find the humor and permission to let down and truly enjoy the ride of friendship, compassion and life. All the different hats we wear help to weave our insights into a complex, rich and sophisticated texture with which we can share and support each other. What are your plans for Mama’s Night Out? I will be bringing three friends. We will probably go out, have hors d’oeuvres somewhere (there are so many great restaurant choices!), maybe go early to The Music Hall’s Founders Lobby Lounge, then sit back and enjoy the show with hundreds of other women! One of my favorite moments in a Music Hall show is looking over and seeing a friend or acquaintance laughing as much as I am. It is an emotionally healthy outing, and I am looking forward to it! Tickets on sale now to Mama’s Night Out!

Trend Alert! Americana Music Discovering Justin Townes Earle
Kids RULE! turns six October full of kids programming – with family friendly prices! by KATHLEEN SOLDATI, Director of Marketing
by PATRICIA LYNCH, Executive Director
Thérèse LaGamma and I were at South by Southwest in Austin last spring checking out the hottest new acts in the music scene and that’s where we saw Justin Townes Earle, son of Steve Earle, and an emerging star in the Americana music world. What’s Americana music? It’s old timey and yet brand new, it reminds you of our roots, it’s got Appalachian heartbreak, rockabilly kicks, bluegrass licks, and ethnic twists. Justin Townes Earle looked like he was out of a fifties movie – sort of like Buddy Holly was born again. He got up into that microphone with a big ‘ole grin and said with a long Texas drawl, “Good evening, ladies and gentlemen.” His jeans were skinny, his shoes were pointed and his playing was tight but his attitude was all devil-may-care. This kind of music transcends age groups – it’s just so part of who we are, and this guy knows how to deliver a song. Great sidemen, hot playing...by the end of the set everyone was dancing and looking at each other like, “Do you believe this?!” Well, I do. This guy is on his way.
From circus to civics to cartoon! We’re kicking off the sixth anniversary of our celebrated Kids RULE! programming with four events in the month of October: the one-hour, one-ring circus, Circo Comedia, slated for Saturday, October 2 at 4pm; our monthly Kids RULE! Movie on Columbus Day, October 11 at 1pm features Toy Story 3, the third and final film in the Pixar series featuring voices by Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Joan Cusack and Whoopi Goldberg; and two performances of our first School Days Series matinee: the all-new musical revue that brings American Civics to life: We the People takes place Wednesday, October 20 at 9:30 and 11:30am.
During the year, watch for month in/month out programming for kids and families – over 30 events including live shows and film. Patricia Lynch, Executive Director of The Music Hall said, “It all adds up. Each year, our Kids RULE! series brings to The Music Hall stage three top live shows, 12 movies (one each month), and 16 matinees in the School Days Series. Do the math – over 30 events each year for kids. New Hampshire has once again been named by the Annie E. Casey Foundation as the best place to raise kids. The Music Hall is the best place to bring them for great family entertainment!” For information about our children’s programming, visit www.themusichall.org and click on Kids RULE!

Music Hall Community Partner: NH Film Festival by ZAC GREGG, NHFF Insider
Most of you already know our pièce de résistance, The Music Hall, which together with the city of Portsmouth is the real draw for this wonderful festival. Events and movies throughout the weekend at the finest venue in New England, need we say more? First thing’s first. Are you a day tripper or a weekender? Undoubtedly the best way to do the NH Film Festival is with a downtown hotel room. The parties go too late, the movies start too early and once you start you won’t want to miss a minute. Last year every downtown hotel room was booked by the weekend of NHFF. So book now!
Your ticket’s secured, hotel’s booked, the stage is now set for what will surely become your favorite weekend in Portsmouth. What exactly does every event every day mean? Well it’s too much to describe here, so here’s my list of 2010 highlights: Thursday is NH Night, an all-day mini-festival featuring NH artists, NH actors, NH filmmakers and NH as a movie set…if you love NH you’ll these films. Watch “NH’s Best” compete, as we award NH Film of the Year, NH Documentary of the Year, and The Van Mcleod Award. Friday night is the Opening Night Reception, Opening Night Film and the can’t-miss Opening Night After Party, sponsored by Absolut Vodka and held at the Portsmouth Gaslight. Who knows? You might rub elbows with a Hollywood star. Check out the Festival Headquarters and Flatbread’s Hospitality Suite at its new location – the new Marriot Harbor Events Center – where you can pick up your tickets, the newest NHFF swag, surf the new
Photo: Philip Case Cohen
Next you’ll want to purchase tickets, which can be done at The Music Hall box office. If the only way to do the festival is for the weekend, then the only pass you’ll want to buy is the VIP Pass. It’s simple, VIP Admission to every NHFF event, priority seating and behind-the-ropes access, The 100 Club VIP Suite Sunday Brunch, the Stella Artois VIP Tent. If you can’t swing the extra $80 for a VIP Ticket, don’t worry. The All Weekend Pass is an awesome deal at $70, and the Day Pass at $35 both provide access to every event every day excluding some of the VIP action. And, you can buy an individual ticket to any event or any film block (although that would hardly be in the festival spirit!) IMAC’s at our MacEdge Internet Café, and eat complimentary pizza from Flatbread. Check out a film in the uniquely New Hampshire Moffat Ladd House’s screening room. Take a break to eat – you will need sustenance for this weekend...try one of our sponsors restaurants and enjoy some vino from our sponsor Francis Ford Coppola Winery which will be partnering with Portsmouth’s finest restaurants...to impress our festival guests. Saturday afternoon, The Stella Artois Beer and Chowder event on the Harborplace Patios covered in Sperry Tents may prove to be the feather in NHFF’s cap. The newest event at this penultimate Portsmouth location is the event we have all been waiting for, chowder, beer and the beautiful Piscataqua River. Saturday night, what will the Signature Pesce Italian Kitchen + Bar After Party look like this year? Always a fusion of film and Studio 54 – this party is a can’t miss!
Ahhhh, Sunday morning. The 100 Club VIP Suite and Brunch after a long weekend of film and wine – this Sunday morning respite is just what the doctor ordered: free food and drink and a view from the highest spot in downtown Portsmouth makes this event truly divine. Check out a workshop, a seminar or a panel discussion at our Conference Venue where some of the biggest Hollywood names and the brightest NH talents lend there unique views, lessons, and perspectives from the film industry. The most important night to some, Closing Night Ceremonies and the awards (we are a competitive film festival after all!) Help us award future Oscar nominees before the Oscars even take note. Join us for closing night ceremonies. You came. You saw. You conquered NHFF’s 10th anniversary festival…now all that’s left is to buy your tickets for next year!
Music Hall Corporate Partner: BayRing Communications by KATHLEEN SOLDATI, Director of Marketing
Ben: The Music Hall is connected to our optical network that blankets Portsmouth. All your phone calls and Internet transactions go through our facilities. We connect you to the world. NOW: That sounds like a tagline! Ben: I guess it does. NOW: What specifically are you known for?
We spoke recently with Ben Thayer, President of BayRing, about his company and its relationship with The Music Hall. We knew we needed to educate ourselves about what BayRing is all about! NOW: What does your company do? Ben: We’re a telecommunications company – we provide a full spectrum of high-end voice and data services. NOW: What services do you provide for The Music Hall?
Box Office 603.436.2400
Ben: We consider ourselves a niche player – we’re large enough to provide any size entity with telecommunications services but we’re small enough to customize solutions for our clients needs – we’re nimble and focused. NOW: What’s new at your company or in your industry? Ben: We’re continuing to expand our state-of-theart optical network throughout New England and invest in the best technical and client focused staff in the industry. We’ve been fortunate to have the support of a loyal and growing client base. We try to come in and do the same thing every day – build it and make it better.
“Our clients are always mentioning that they’ve seen a show at The Music Hall that we sponsored.” - Ben Thayer
NOW: Why do you sponsor The Music Hall? Ben: It’s the right thing to do. We’re based in Portsmouth and we try to be philanthropic in our market area which is generally New England. The Music Hall isn’t just a great community organization, it’s a great regional organization. The Hall brings amazing entertainers and authors to this area – the board and staff do a great job and are a cool group of people. We feel fortunate to have had a long-standing partnership with such a dynamic arts organization. Our clients are always mentioning that they have seen a show at the Music hall that we sponsored. For corporate sponsorship info, contact Mary Horigan at (603) 433-3100 ext. 18 or mhorigan@themusichall.org
