Thank You To Our Team ...............38
Our 2021-2022 season was marked with great celebration as we completed our latest project, The Music Hall Lounge! Formerly “the Loft,” this revitalized space helps to ensure our sustainability as a nonprofit theater in Portsmouth. In a nightclub-style layout with cabaret seating, The Lounge gives us the flexibility and versatility we need for all of our events and plans for the future. This vision couldn’t have been realized without the support of COVID stimulus funds, particularly those from here in NH, and the support and encouragement of you—our Music Hall family.

I hope you enjoy the glossy pages of our annual Playbill—this publication is an avenue for us to acknowledge our dedicated supporters and a resource for our patrons. (And this year, there’s a crossword puzzle, too!) A huge thank you to everyone who filled out the Strategic Plan survey sent out by our friends at the University of New Hampshire—many of your suggestions are already in the works and even reflected throughout this Playbill.

This excitement is only amplified by the joy we have in bringing back our partnership with the Ogunquit Playhouse, starting with the holiday production of Elf The Musical! Keep an eye out for other Ogunquit partnership news to come later. An addition you might not see is just behind our lush red curtain: our brand new Dressing Room block! As a community-based nonprofit, capital improvements like these are critical for our sustainability and ability to offer national touring artists and performers a first-class experience in our Historic Theater.

Portsmouth has been punching above its weight in the arts and culture world for a long time, but we are now seeing our area flourish in fresh and expansive ways. In the coming months, we will have some news about our role in the city-wide, year-long celebration of Portsmouth’s 400th in 2023, and we’ll kick it off with another edition of our wonderful collaboration with the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra for its Champagne Pops concert. Already, 2023 is shaping up to be an arts-filled year, not just for us here at the Hall but across our entire community as well.
STEWARDING THE FUTURE
For decades, The Music Hall has drawn patrons from all walks of life through its doors to converge in this extraordinary space—a place both intimate and cozy yet also stunning and sublime, historical and traditional in its physical structure yet forwardlooking and innovative in its programming—all while seeking to serve the community from which it emerged.
But before we hit the 400th, we’ve got a fantastic array of entertainment to present, including the Telluride by the Sea Film Festival, the return of Elf The Musical, a suite of Writers on a New England Stage events, and much more. There truly is something for the whole family here!

If you haven’t visited the newly revitalized space at 131 Congress Street, you absolutely should—beautiful design, outstanding acoustics, and an intimate vibe make it the perfect room to see music, comedy, and literary events (and the wine is fine, too!). Shuttered since the onset of the pandemic and now fully renovated and running at full capacity, The Lounge is a boon for our audiences and the town itself, bringing residents and tourists alike out for an evening of entertainment at affordable price points.
Chair, The Music Hall Board of Trustees
As stewards of this gorgeous venue, The Friends of The Music Hall, along with our Board of Trustees, dedicated staff, and beloved volunteers, devote a tremendous amount of care and attention to supporting our cherished theater, working assiduously to maintain and future-proof our 144-year-old building and its younger sibling, The Music Hall Lounge.
As a nonprofit theater, serving our community and remaining accessible to all is constantly at the top of our minds. Our membership program helps keep ticket prices lower, fuels our mission-related work, and keeps the theater up and running, and your support is what makes it all possible—and for that, we are grateful for your commitment and proud to be its Bobsteward.Lord

In Portsmouth, the “City of the Open Door,” we strive to be the Great Room for all, offering our stages to help other organizations further their missions, either in collaboration with or by extending heavy nonprofit discounts. By working with those with similar missions to ours across the Seacoast, we are stronger together.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we are constantly developing our outreach efforts and programming for a wider impact on those around us with events such as:
• School Days Series: Throughout the school year, we present live performances that enrich the lives of children, offering scholarships to local schools to increase access.
• Give the Gift of Magic: Thanks to a fund supported by Music Hall members and patrons, we provide complimentary tickets to neighbors in need, as identified by our community partners.
SHARING THE STAGE WITH OUR COMMUNITY
For over 140 years, we’ve been at the center of Portsmouth’s arts and culture scene, and we’ve always given back to the community that supports us.
We’re proud to serve our community in a vital role. Our scope may be global, but our heart is local.
••• 32 •••
Without these various forms of annual support and gifts from the estates of our 1878 Legacy Society members, ticket prices would be 25% higher or more. We would not be able to entice world-renowned artists to our intimate theaters. We could not afford to offer you experiences in our Historic Theater or our revitalized 116-seat venue, The Lounge. And we would not be able to fulfill our vision: “To enrich, entertain, and inspire all through worldrenowned and community-based programming in our beloved gathering spaces.”
••• 33 •••
You make this possible, and you share in our success. Thank you for your help in shaping our vision and making it a reality.
Thanks to your membership contributions, your corporate sponsorships, and your gifts to the annual campaign, in combination with foundation grants and state and federal funding, we are able to offer discounted and complimentary tickets, maintain our Historic Theater, and pursue efforts that engage all members of our community.
Thank you for treasuring this theater.
With a renewed commitment to provide programming for everyone, from music and dance to comedy and Broadway musicals, from literature to film festivals, we have prepared a robust roster of Grammy-winning artists, comedic legends, literary giants, thought-leaders, and incredible film events for the 2022-23 Season.
It’s not that we can’t do it without you. We were built to do it with you. The Music Hall was established as a nonprofit organization in 1987 with the purpose of stewarding a historic treasure and serving our community, and through the generosity of our community— our family of members, donors, and sponsors—we are able to achieve that mission.

“The English settlers who started what is now Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1630 brought along plenty of musical instruments, but only one Bible.”
TIDBITS OF BITE-SIZED HISTORY
J. Dennis Robinson, Music Hall: How a City Built a Theater and a Theater Shaped a City
• The theater was shut down for two weeks in 1947 by local narcotics agents for daring to screen Reefer Madness, the antimarijuana propaganda film. As The Civic, the theater also flirted with X-rated fare as well as one film rated “V for violence,” Mark of the Devil, which came with vomit bags.
• Big enough to fit an elephant, the red loading dock doors had Buffalo Bill's horseback riding routine charge through in the late 1800s.
• The Music Hall’s Historic Theater was designated “An American Treasure” by the Department of the Interior in 2004.
For more about our Historic Theater, see page 44-45, “Maintaining an American Treasure” and for an amazing journey through history of the arts in Portsmouth, and its theaters, check out Music Hall: How a City Built a Theater and a Theater Shaped a City. On sale at the B2W Box Office at the Historic Theater and online at TheMusicHall.org/ Merchandise.
• Barry Fritz, who was a projectionist in the 1950s, installed what has come to be known as the “Trashcandelier.” This was, in a feat of thriftiness, a metal trashcan lid with six flood lights stuck through it. It hung above audiences for over 65 years until it was replaced with a new chandelier from The Lighting Center at Rockingham Electric in 2013. The Trashcandelier is still working; suspended backstage above the stage doors, it greets performers at every show.

We strive to ensure that The Music Hall is here for future generations. There is always going to be more to do—just ask anyone living in a historic home! From the roof to the brick walls, there are continuous maintenance expenses that need to be covered, and sometimes surprise issues pop up that need an immediate solution. Through our Strategic Planning survey process, you and other patrons shared other great ideas to enhance our venues that we are looking to implement. Thank you! We want everyone in our community, both today and in the future, to be able to comfortably enjoy our performances.
Because of you, our members and donors, we will be able to maintain this historic gem, honoring the past while offering entertainment, education, and inspiration today.
THE FUTURE
As proud as we are of our historic roots, modern amenities are necessary to keep up with the times. A decade ago, we celebrated the completion of a restoration and renovation that included our awardwinning restrooms and the lower lobby. In 2020 we replaced the Historic Theater's HVAC with a state-of-the-art system complete with hospital-grade MERV13 filters. Our lighting system was updated in 2021 and the backstage green room and dressing rooms were renovated in Summer 2022, which provide artists more creative comfort. None of this would have been possible without the generosity of our donors.
THE PAST
MAINTAINING AN AMERICAN TREASURE
We live in an area rich with history and tales to tell, and our Historic Theater has an abundance of stories. Built in 1878 by shipwrights, we are proud to be one of the last remaining “hemp houses” in the country, still using the original rigging system from 1901 that depends on rope, block and tackle, and counterweight to raise the curtain and make theatrical magic happen. Our acoustically rich space has inspired artists like The Indigo Girls and Brandi Carlile in their own work.

In gratitude for the generous support of their impactful gifts each year, we recognize the following individuals. Their gifts materially assist the theater in presenting the very best programming, maintaining our commitment to staff and training, and funding of strategic operational investments. Their steadfast support is invaluable to our present and future.
IMPACT INVESTORS AT THE MUSIC HALL
The Montrone Family Morgan and Tara Rutman

• Eliminated the use of 22,500 single-use plastic bottles a year.
• Installed a more efficient HVAC system with an amazing filtration system to keep the air in The Music Hall fresh and healthy for all who visit.
• Integrated Bluedrop Water’s fountain system and switched to fountain soda and canned beer, thus eliminating plastic and glass bottles.
• Incorporated state-of-the-art and energy-efficient lights and windows.
To help protect our town, community, and Earth, we've been making changes to increase our sustainability.
• Transitioned to strawless cup lids, and moved to 100% compostable cups for all drinks.
But we’re not done yet! We’re future-proofing, not only with a sustainable business model but also with some upgrades. We hope you will join us in this important endeavor to be sustainable. It can be as simple as enjoying still or sparkling water in a compostable cup!

Josie Todd, Robert Newman, and cast in the Ogunquit Playhouse’s 2019 production of Annie at The Music Hall
This program, inspired by Morgan & Tara Rutman, is sponsored by BankProv, Hampton Ford Hyundai, and the Fuller Foundation.
Through our Give the Gift of Magic campaign, we invite Music Hall members and patrons to contribute to a fund to provide tickets to families in need. Recipients are able to use their tickets for our collaboration with the Ogunquit Playhouse as well as films and visits from musicians, comedians, authors, and scholars. Recipients are identified by our community partners, which include health and human service organizations as well as schools and art/music education programs.
GIVE THE GIFT OF MAGIC
If you’d like to become a partner organization, contact Monte Bohanan (MBohanan@ themusichall.org or 603.766.2194)
Our goal for the coming year is to build partnerships with more organizations and double the number of Seacoast neighbors we reach. Contributions to Give the Gift allow The Music Hall to distribute tickets to people who might not otherwise have the resources to enjoy the magic of top-quality artists.
If you are part of one of our partner organizations, contact the Box Office for information about tickets at 603.436.2400.

CONTRIBUTED VS. EARNED
As a nonprofit organization, The Music Hall is dependent on more than just ticket sales. In addition to earned revenue from ticket sales, we receive contributed income from membership, donations, grants, and more. However, during COVID-19, contributed income saved our stages.
From July 2020-June 2021, we lost 90% of our earned revenue due to COVID-19 (compared to FY19, July 1, 2018June 30, 2019, our last fiscal year unaffected by the pandemic) from canceled and rescheduled shows. Thanks to our generous donors, sponsors, and support from the State of NH and other federal COVID ER funds, we were able to continue operating safely, albeit at a limited capacity.
