irls stop pondering over the topic... You read it right. A statement we hear from a large number of teenage girls. Yes, you may be just a friend but a friend to what extent?? What kind of friendship do you own ? Does he treat you like a sister? Now, we are all Muslim girls trying to learn Islam and submit ourselves completely as Muslimahs. Are we really allowed this kind of friendship? We believe Allah is watching us every second... Will this friendship of ours make Allah happy or displeased with us? Teenage is a period in our life

when we feel ‘’Ahh I’ve finally grown up, now let me live my life!’’ Yes indeed, teenage is the last phase of growth and initial stage of adolescence. Our mind will be filled with curiosity, excitement, depression, anger and whole lot of other emotions mixed together, some of which we blame on hormones which keep fluctuating vigorously at this age. Islam does not ask Muslim women to be without studying or working. Allah actually made it obligatory for every Muslim to seek knowledge. Women or girls are given freedom to go to schools and universities for the sake of gaining knowledge. But

there are certain guidelines to follow in order to preserve our identity as Muslim women. We are those people who love our Prophet (peace be upon him) more than our dear ones, hence it becomes obligatory on us to follow his lifestyle what so ever. Women are one of the most beautiful creations of Allah (subhana wa tala) and of course have the power to attract men. Some behaviors or gestures of ours leads them into evil things even without our knowledge. Teenage girls sometimes think “Well, I AM in my hijab so there’s no problem for me to mix with boys, right? They won’t be attracted to me!” Do you think like this as well?

advice Hijab is an attitude. Just covering yourself won’t do. You have to be careful while looking, talking, laughing, eating etc. in front of boys. Girls are generally soft spoken, and when you talk sweetly to a boy he might think you are an easy person and might try being mischievous with you. All mannerism of yours is watched by males surrounding you since it’s their nature especially at the age of adolescence. So it is our duty to be modest in all ways possible and save them and us from doing haraam acts. “And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what must ordinarily appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, or their brothers' sons or their sisters' sons, or their women or the servants whom their right hands possess, or male servants free “there is no harm in talking of physical needs, or small children to a non-mahram as long who have no sense of the shame of sex, and that they should not strike as you are in your limits and their feet in order to draw attention preserving your modesty” to their hidden ornaments. And O you Believers, turn you all together towards Allah, that you may attain Bliss.” (Quran 24:31). Men are also asked to lower their gaze and protect themselves from the attack of satan. Islam is a complete religion and forbids anything and everything that may lead to evil acts and eventually disgrace in dunya and akirah. There is no harm in talking to a non mahram as long as you are in your limits and preserving your modesty but to be with a non mahram inside a closed place is forbidden because satan takes the third place in there. Once we girls start caring for our modesty then for sure boys will understand the matter and stay away from thinking or acting in an indecent manner. Some girls feel boys respect girls who talk and mingle with them freely and they think only then they are considered as new generation girls. That thought is a completely wrong one. A boy respects a girl who is modest in her dressing, who maintains the limits while

advice talking to him, who is smart enough to save herself, who is independent and who keeps a good relation with everyone. If you don’t believe me ask your brothers and fathers about what girls they respected and preferred as their life partners when they were young. Boys are tempted by a girl’s behavior and beauty. They have a tendency to do evil mainly because girls don’t guard their modesty. KOSHARI This traditional street recipe is one of the most famous recipes in Egypt. It’s absolutely delicious and savory and stomachfilling!

INGREDIENTS • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 2 cups uncooked white rice • 3 cups water • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 (16 ounce) package uncooked elbow macaroni • 1 cup beluga lentils, soaked in water • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 5 onions, minced 1. Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil and reduce heat to low. Sim- • 2 cloves garlic, minced • 3 tablespoons distilled in a saucepan over medium-high mer until lentils are tender white vinegar heat. For The Batter • 4 cups all-purpose flour • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 lemon, juiced • 2 2/3 cups warm water • Light vegetable oil, for frying, plus more for coating spoons

1. To make the syrup: Combine sugar, water, and lemon juice in a medium saucepan. Place over medium heat, and simmer until thick enough to coat the back of a spoon, about 10 minutes. Add rose or orange-blossom water, and simmer for a few seconds longer. Remove from heat, and let cool. Cover, and refrigerate until ready to use. 2. To make the batter: Whisk to combine flour, salt, and yeast in a large bowl. Gradually stir in water, beating vigorously until smooth and elastic, about 10 minutes. Cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for at least 1 1/4 hours. Uncover, and beat once more. Cover, and let rise again, about 30 minutes. 3. Heat 2 inches of oil in a deep saucepan over

medium-high heat until the oil reaches 375 degrees. Dip two tablespoons in a small bowl of oil to coat. Working in batches, spoon about a tablespoon of batter into hot oil. Fry, turning occasionally, until puffed, crisp, and golden. Reduce the heat a little so that the fritters are thoroughly cooked without getting too brown. The light batter produces irregular rather than round fritters. 4. Using a slotted spoon, remove fritters, and transfer to a paper towel-lined baking sheet to drain. Dip fritters in the cold syrup for a few seconds to coat and soak up some syrup. These are best served hot, but they may also be served at room temperature.

Sometimes products like dry shampoos aren’t always convenient for us, either for some people because of the price or simply because we’ve used the last bit of the can to its final breath spray which is why a simple

DIY using things which you can find around your house can be a little pick me up when you don’t have enough time to shower and leaving our hair looking a little... blah. It can sometimes really save the day.

d.i.y What you will need:

3 2 tablespoons cornstarch

2 tablespoons baking soda

2 tablespoons cornmeal

small/cereal bowl

2 tablespoons ground oatmeal

tablespoon

essential oil (optional)

(salt/pepper shaker) container (optional)

What youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll need to do:

Measure out 2 tablespoons of cornmeal, cornstarch and baking soda into a small bowl

On its own, grind the oatmeal to turn it as fine as the other substances and add it to where the others are

(optional) If you chose to add essential oil, add a few drops of it into the mix for your DIY dry shampoo to have a scent

Mix it all together

Massage the mixture into your scalp or run your fingers through your hair as you would do to a normal (dry) shampoo

If you wish to regularly use this DIY then if you have a container which can sprinkle things out, e.g. a salt/pepper shaker, then you can pour the mixture into that, otherwise sprinkle the mixture straight into your hair

Finally, using a hairbrush of course, brush through your hair to smooth it out and remove the dirt/substances in it.

advice Surely the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of man; but most people know not [Qur'an 40:57]" We are always aware of what it is to be “green”. We are always taught in schools about the importance of recycling and how to protect our environment. We see the new inventions and innovations made to help make planet Earth a better place to live. I don’t think I need to tell you about its importance because I’m guessing most of you already know and whether you support being “green” or not, you can’t deny that protecting our environment is good for mankind. Okay, I’ll try to get to my point and make it more clear even though you probably guessed from the title what I will be rambling about.

-"We made from water every living thing" [Qur'an 21:30]. -"Consider the water which you drink. Was it you that brought it down from the rain cloud or We? If We had pleased, We could make it bitter" [Qur'an 56:68-70].

everything good you do to the environment even if it means turning off the water while brushing your teeth will be counted for your good deeds!

Trust me, this isn’t a boring article going on and on about “ride the bike to school, use paper lunch bags, always recycle, recycle, recycle” because even though I support that, I have to make sure to inform you girls about the relationship of being Muslim and being green.

So, not everyone who is green is Muslim (duh!) but everyone who is Muslim is surely green. And if you didn’t know then don’t sweat it. I’m not trying to pressure anyone to go all crazy green because honestly who does that? But, instead I’m trying to bring awareness to that and to remind you girls that it is our duty as Muslims to protect our environment. So, remember everything good you do to the environment even if it means turning off the water while brushing your teeth will be counted for your good deeds!

Yes, being Muslim is being green. It’s an act of worship to help save the environment and keep it at its best. Allah (SWT) gave us a beautiful display of nature and it’s up to us to keep it that way until the day of judgement. You need to know that it is a SIN to do harm to nature and its animals. The Quran explains the importance of being green and even Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has explained throughout his life the philosophy of nature. Below are a few passages from the Quran that provide evidence about being green.

interview MGM: When did you first discover your passion for fashion? Dina: “I first discovered my passion for fashion when I was seventeen and began studying it for Alevels. To be honest I've never really been into mainstream fashion, but the idea of creating something fabulous and turning it into a trend is something that appealed to me.”

MGM: Where do you get your design inspiration? Dina: “My inspiration comes from everywhere, anything I might see that day, or a conversation I may have that could just flick a switch in my brain and spark up an idea that is totally unrelated to the subject in conversation. I get inspiration from people too, I love studying street style, I think it's more interesting and will always be more interesting than mainstream fashion ever will.”

MGM: When and how did you start your shop 'Lazy Doll'? Dina: “I started lazydoll on my Dina Toki-o fan page just for fun, many of my 'followers' loved my hijabs so I started selling them. It was successful, so I thought why not make a website and have bigger variety and now inshallah when we re-lauch we'll be introducing T-shirts too!”

MGM: When can we buy your designs? Dina: “I'm working it on it I promise, I have some collaborations in mind and inshallah maybe even a small collection will be available to everyone in the coming months. But for now I still take orders for one off pieces custom made.”

interview MGM: What's your favorite thing about being a designer and youtube vlogger? And what do you most hate about it? Dina: “I don't have a favourite about being a youtuber, but when it comes to designing, there's nothing better than the feeling of satisfaction when you see the end result in all it's glory! What I hate about everything I do as a whole, is the amount of judgement I face every day and the rudeness that comes with it!”

MGM: What's your current favorite fashion trend? Dina: “I'm not huge on current trends, but during the summer I really enjoyed the ombre trend. I also love outfits and styles that are timeless, they'll always look great whatever year or season it is!

MGM: Why do you think modesty is important? Dina: “It's very important I think because as a woman living in the west for almost all of my life, everything here (and now it's just as bad or worse even in middle eastern or muslim countries i.e. Egypt) women constantly get judged on their sexual appearance and how attractive they are. The media is bombarded with sexual images, sex is used for advertising anything nowadays it truly makes my stomach heave. Modesty brings back a womans respect for herself and demands respect of others. That's not to say we can't look good and smart either.”

MGM: What are your dreams for the future?

“

MODESTY BRINGS BACK A WOMANS RESPECT FOR HERSELF AND DEMANDS RESPECT OF OTHERS. THAT’S NOT TO SAY WE CAN’T LOOK GOOD AND SMART EITHER.”

Dina: “The goal at the end of it all here, is to become a successful full time designer, and I'd quite like to keep writing columns too. “

interview MGM: What are you most proud of as a British-Egyptian Muslim girl? Dina: “To be honest, I 'm not proud of being English or Egyptian. I don't like pride it can be a very ugly thing sometimes. So as British Egyptian Muslim girl, I'm just happy that I am able to do what I love and inspire others in the process too whilst still remembering my origins and faith, Al Hamdilillah.”

Because I wanted to collect all the lastminute and up to date trends and pieces for this fall/autumn/winter and bring them to you so that you can set the trend all season long! Scouring over the web, you can find tons of pins on Pinterest, blogs, magazines and articles and all about this season’s hottest trends and how you can style them through fashion and beauty!

BAROQUE ‘Baroque? What’s that?’ Is that what you’re thinking? Or maybe you do know what it is and you’re just thinking how you can incorporate this print into an outfit without looking like you’ve just time travelled from the 16th century so here’s some fashion and beauty pieces that you can add to your wardrobe that don’t look to out there and that can still be out together to become a modest outfit.

KNITS This trend is sensible enough for these chilly months when we all wanna wrap up and just feel nice and cosy with our lovely, hot drinks. To spice up your knit jumper if you don’t like things plain, buy a striped knit one or maybe even an ombre/ tie-die one too.

A simple and inexpensive way to add knits to your outfit if you don’t want to ‘woolly’ yourself up too much is to just wear a snood, these are so nice to snuggle into, and you can find them in nearly every single shop now that they’re stocking up on their winter wear.

LOOK 4

MILITARY The last trends have been about the texture and pattern of the look – but what about the personality? The military trend is all about toughening up your look through your outfit.

fashion/beauty If you’re more feminine and would prefer to add a touch of military to your outfit in a subtle way then you can use the Essie nail polish in Golden Nuggets – it’s a nice glitter polish but with that military green colour. Another way of getting military on your tips is to simply do the camo pattern using 2 different shades of a green and some brown polish. Paint your nails with one of the green shades, wait for it to dry and with the other green and brown polish make blotches or camo looking stripes and you’re done! (Extra tip: Use a matte top coat like Essie Matte About You to add to the camo effect/look). Another tip: if you don’t want to change your outfit to a green/khaki colour but want to toughen up you’re outfit, just add some studs to your clothes and there you have it – it is easy to add studs to your own clothing pieces by buying them online or in a craft store for a very cheap price and adding them wherever you want on your outfit piece.

METALLICS

This trend is very simple as you don’t just need to find metallic only things, you can use gold, silver and even chrome to make a ‘metallic’ look. Jewellery is a really simple way to contribute to this trend since you can get gold, chrome and silver jewellery, etc.

This section deals on the subject as to how to deal with your daily fashion woes this season: • Opt for a combination of black (which is the most common colour for abayas) with a headscarf in a combination of red and black print. • Better still if you are an experimenting fashion gal go for a combination of rhapsody (purple) with a combination of titanium (steel gray). Steel gray and purple go for a great twosome.

fashion • The season emphasizes on hand embroidery such as herringbone, so go for a bit of a makeover in your abaya. Get the hem of your abaya as well as the cuff of your sleeves hand-embroidered with a bit of minute detailing in a broad set-up such as if you go for a five-inch broad sleeve embroidery then go for a ten-inch broad hem embroidery which will emphasize the look and stand-out in the crowd factor. • Go for crepes or satins this season, they will enhance your stand-out factor. • If you dont want to do anything keep your abaya (or whatever you like to wear) as it is and just couple it up with a scarf of any colour ‘in’ this season.

Follow these simple steps in finding your ultimate abaya or getting it custom-made for the bride in you.

LOOK ONE • Try going for a kaftan abaya with a heavily embellished border on all sides. • Make sure that the embroidery on the border should not consist of a majority of threadwork rather should be in zardozi i.e. Use of beads, glass beads, metallic threads, swarovski crystals, stones, chained stones etc. • Also make sure that you do not step into any sort of prints rather try to keep the base in a single colour or if you are experimental a double colour can do as well, depending on the colours, but in no case do go for a print, try to keep it subtle yet rich. • If you cannot get a bordered kaftan, try to get an embellished hem and a

little embellished front and get a ready zardozi border from the market and attach it on all sides yourself or get it attached from somebody.

LOOK TWO • If you are not sport for a kaftan go for a simple flowing abaya • Try making the front-open look your statement look as it is ‘in’ this season and for a bride it is also very important that there be ease of wearing as well as of removing, both of which you will find in the front open set-up. • You can also alternate the style by customizing the front-open to a side-open one with a chiffon top layer followed by a base of crepe, which will make for a beautiful set-up that will set you apart. • Ask your designer to set up minute detailing with satin ribbon cutwork adding alongside swarovski crystals or stones which will add an elegance to your personality. • Try adding customized buttons to your abaya. • If you don’t want your abaya customized try to get something which fills up the above criteria or near and work it up a bit on your own.

ecently, I went to a museum that was hosting an exhibition about “1001 Inventions,” a program designed to show people Muslim heritage in our world. While I was there, I found out a lot of interesting information about Muslim scholars that made an impact on our world. For example, many modern day things at home, in school, at the hospital, in the market, just to name a few, came from the ideas, inventions, and theories of Muslims! The most mind boggling, though, was that when Europe was having its Dark Ages, the period of ignorance before the Renaissance, Muslims in Asia made astounding, important discoveries that led to many modern day items being made. I wanted to share all of this information, because we should all know Islamic history. This article, tells about some famous Muslim scholars back in the day, along with some of Europe’s famous scholars.

ABBAS IBN FIRNAS Abbas ibn Firnas was born in the 9th century. He is most famous for producing a flying machine. However, he also perfected the technique of cutting rock crystal (quartz) and producing glass, which enabled him to make a sort of glass planetarium, complete with fake thunder and lighting.

AL-JAZARI Al Jazari was an inventor and a mechanical engineer. His inventions, which were all mechanical devices, were so amazing and helpful that King Nasir Al-Din asked him to record his inventions in a manual. AL-ZAHRAWI (Abulcasis)

Al-Kindi was an encyclopedia of a man; he was a physician, philosopher, musician, astronomer, chemist, and geometer, just to name a few. He is famous for his books, over 361. The books were written on a variety of topics, including math, time, perfume, and numbers.

Al-Zahrawi was a revolutionary physician and surgeon. He is renowned for his book al-Tasrif or The Method of Medicine. His book, which had over 31 volumes in it, gave detailed accounts on dental, surgical, and pharmaceutical practices. He also designed and illustrated over 200 surgical instruments, like syringes, droppers, and scalpels. He also is quite famous for his medical discovery of using catgut to stitch internal wounds. He also started the practice of storing drugs in little capsules of catgut until ready to be taken.

FATIMA AL-FIHRI Fatima al-Fihri was born in 9th century Morocco; she was a well-educated young woman who was very wealthy. She vowed to create a learning centre for her community, which eventually developed into Morocco’s number one university, alQayrawan.

IBN AL-HAYTHAM Ibn Al-Haytham was the master of optics. He wrote the Kitab al-Manazir, or Book of Optics. The Latin version of his book had enormous impacts on Roger Bacon and Leonardo da Vinci.

IBN BATUTA Ibn Batuta

Ibn Battuta is renowned for his travel book, the Rihla. Ibn Battuta set off from Morocco when he was 21, and didn’t return for 29 years. He traveled through 44 countries by foot, boat, camel, cart, and horse. When he returned, he was asked by the Sultan of Fez and Morocco to record his travel in a book. His book is our window to the 14th century today.

JABIR IBN HAYYAN Jabir ibn Hayyan, known in the west as Geber, is known as the “father” of chemistry. His most influential work was devising and perfecting the process of sublimation, liquefaction, crystallization, distillation, purification, amalgamation, oxidation, evaporation, and Jabir Ibn Hayyan filtration. He also is very famous for discovering sulphuric acid by distilling alum.

SINAN

Koca Mimar Sinan, or Sinan, was a famous arichteticure. He is most famous, however, for building the Selimiye Mosque in Edirne, which has the tallest minarets in Turkey. He also built 476 other buildings.

EUROPE’S FAMOUS SCHOLARS ROGER BACON Roger Bacon is known as the man who came up with the idea of the scientific method. However, he spoke Arabic (!) and told everyone that knowledge of Arabic and Arabic science was the only way to true knowledge. Actually, Ibn al-Haytham introduced the scientific method. Bacon quotes or refers to Ibn al-Haytham at almost every step in his book, Opus Maius. Roger Bacon’s chief guide in medicine was Ibn Sina’s Canon. Bacon also read many books written by Muslims that were translated into Latin.

LEONARDO DA VINCI Leonardo da Vinci was a famous figure during the renaissance, and even today. He was a painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, scientist, and inventor. He also created the Mona Lisa. Leonardo da Vinci is known for having inventing a version of our modern day camera. However, Ibn alHaytham invented the camera obscure centuries before Leonardo da Vinci.

NICOLAS COPERNICUS Nicolas Copernicus is said to be the founder of modern say astronomy; however, many, if not most, of his theories were based on those of Nasir al-Din al-Tusi and Ibn al-Shatir. Copernicus relied heavily on al-Zarqali and alBattani.

did you know? TYCHO BRAHE Tycho Brahe is famous for (re)discovering the Moon’s variation, which was first discovered by Mohammed Abu al-Wafa al-Bouzjani, about six hundred years previously. Brahe also is credited for his famed mural quadrant, which was very similar to those developed by previous Muslim astronomers, particularly Taqi al-Din.

JOHANNES KEPLER Johannes Kepler is renowned for discovering the laws of planetary motion, his work on optics, the founder of the theory of the camera obsucra, and the first correct explanation of the working of the human eye. However, Kepler relied heavily on Ibn alHaytham’s studies on light refraction; in fact, Kepler continued where Ibn al-Haytham left off. Kepler also developed the camera obsucra which was first discovered by Ibn al-Haytham.

Boys. They're only the opposite gender right? Wrong. In Islam, it's different. Allah (SWT) who created us and knows what's best for us has organized this relationship, so things can work out the best for everyone. Let's start with how to deal with boys, mostly if they are in school with you. Treat boys in school/class just how you would treat a classmate. Talk whenever there is a legitimate reason and try not to talk one on one. Also when you talk, try to keep your voice clear and your gaze low and be careful if conversations becomes a habit they will get used to you, and wrong things can happen easily. Watch the way you act around them, and the impression you make. Be careful, boys notice easily, so try to avoid laughing out loud or doing anything that is eye catching. You also want to be modest in the way you dress. Look presentable and be respectful. Many girls are bothered by boys because of the way they dress. Now another thing comes up, crushes. Why do you think they happen? Because the relationship isn't organized and the line is crossed. This happens gradually without being easily noticed. You find yourself enjoying at the beginning

because you are happy, but this isn't real happiness. Soon, a tragedy could happen, and heartbreaks afterwards. It all happens fast. Now the big question, why is dating haram? Another reason, is actually more of a realistic reason. Do you see all these people that date? All these problems that come with it? The cheating and the broken hearts?
