Community News Area Islamic Organizations Unprepared to Assist Congregation, Neighbors In Case of Disaster By Christina Tobias-Nahi
Muslim Link Contributing Writer
In our continuing series on preparedness for storms and other forces of nature (see “Severe Weather Events Sending A Message: Be Prepared” in the December 14, 2012 issue of the Muslim Link for information on preparing your household) it is necessary to see how our local Islamic community organizations are situated in their preparation response. This is especially important in light of the recent North East blizzard and the loss of life there. In order to investigate this issue more thoroughly, Muslim Link sent out many inquiring emails and made over a dozen phone calls to nearly all the major masajid in the greater DC area.
Unfortunately the results were less than comforting in that some communications were not even responded to. For those that did get back to us for this story, the basic take away was that very few, if any, of our local centers are prepared to aid and assist in a great disaster

in our area either their own congregations or the greater mainstream community. The simplest form of policy in place, is that most places of worship / community centers will close in severe weather
and that will be posted on their website or sent via listserve to ask people for safety’s sake to remain at home in treacherous conditions. A few have done one step better in actually conducting, or planning to organize in the near future, basic preparedness workshops for educating the congregation about how to stock up on necessary supplies and other life-saving tips – such as PGMA held in December. Several places mentioned they encourage neighbors to check on neighbors and to take in other families if the power goes out for example in a nearby home. Yet the masajid are not prepared to be a resource to receive a whole neighborhood in the case of a more wide-spread power outage where families may need to rely on a local warming (or cooling) and feeding shelter. >> disaster Pg 19

Talk Opposing Hijab Draws Objection By Tara Bahrampour
The Washington Post, Feb 8, 2013
The notice in the Fairfax Station Patch on Tuesday was brief, but to Laurie Jaghlit it felt like a punch in the gut. At the next meeting of Republican Women of Clifton, a guest speaker would discuss “the treatment of women in Islamic society and how she believes the Hijab is a catalyst for Islamic terrorism.” The Feb. 20 meeting would take place at Fairview Elementary School, five miles from Jaghlit’s house. Jaghlit, a 52-year-old grandmother who raised nine children in Fairfax Station and Herndon, wears the hijab, or Islamic head covering. She had heard about talks like this in other parts of the country but had never confronted the issue so close to home. “If that’s not hateful and inciteful speech, I don’t know what is,” she said. “This is a diverse area. You’d think that hopefully we’d be beyond this. “ On Thursday, the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations contacted Fairfax County Public
Schools Superintendent Jack D. Dale and asked him to rescind approval for the group to use the school. In an e-mail that CAIR shared with The Washington Post, Dale denied the request, saying, “After school hours, anyone may rent
Sharia Law in Western societies.” RWC’s president, Alice Butler-Short, identified sharia, or Islamic law, in the news release as one of “the forces working to destroy our liberty.”
“It’s one thing for hatemongers to rent a private facility and spew their bigotry, but it’s another for a taxpayer-funded public school to offer it to speakers who will promote bigotry and intolerance.” --Ibrahim Hooper, CAIR the public facility.” Republican Women of Clifton, a seven-year-old, 100-member club, meets monthly at the school. In a news release, it said the talk, by Stephanie Reis, founder of the Omaha chapter of ACT! for America, “will focus on the treatment of women in Islamic society and how the Hijab is a catalyst for Islamism because it leads to the mentality of passive terrorism and silent support for
Susan Lider, the group’s public relations chairperson, said that while the group often hosts political speakers, she does not recall this kind of controversy before. “That’s why I was so surprised, because we have speakers all the time on lots of topics,” she said. Lider said Reis had recently moved to the area and joined the club.
Asked if the hijab or sharia were common concerns for club members, Lider said, “Let’s put it this way, it’s one of the things that people talk about.” She said she had been reading up on the hijab, adding, “I don’t know a lot about it other than that I wouldn’t ever want to wear one.” Reis declined to comment. The Omaha ACT! for America Web site quotes her as saying, “Although the Omaha area isn’t overrun with militant Islamists, this area is not immune to radical Islamic intimidation. Our chapter seeks to educate local citizens about the war that has been declared on America by jihadists and equip our citizens with peaceful, constructive tools to bring about a positive change in local policy and public opinion.” The census does not identify people by religion, but according to census statistics, only a few hundred people born in predominantly Muslim countries live in Fairfax Station, and few to none live in Clifton.

Muslim American Inaugural Gala Celebrates Obama’s Re-election By Farkhunda Ali
Muslim Link Contributing Writer
Familiar faces reached out to unfamiliar faces in elegant dresses and tuxedos to celebrate the second inauguration of President Barack Obama. The threestory Josephine Butler Parks Center near the historic Malcolm X Park in NW Washington, DC was filled to capacity with 350 American Muslims and non-Muslims from the DC region. The first annual Muslim American Inaugural gala held on January 20, 2013 was organized by the Muslim American Presidential Inauguration Committee (MAPIC), a national coalition of volunteers involved in politics, law, medicine, education, entertainment, and civil rights. The purpose of this event was to celebrate, network and recognize the contributions of American Muslims in the arenas of medicine, art, civic engagement, politics, media, education, sports, and community activism. Honorary guests Congressman Keith Ellison (D-MN) and Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) addressed the attendees and acknowledged the impact of American Muslims in the electoral process. During the evening, American Muslims were encouraged to recognize the power they have in establishing the American Muslim political platform. “The nation will be better if we put ourselves to the task and commit ourselves to making this country a better place,” said Congressman Ellison. He added that Islamic morals go hand and hand with the core values that establish a good society.
The event demonstrated the rich diversity of Muslims who made their mark on the American society and continue to bring positive influences to their communities. For many young Muslims, this was the time to socialize, enjoy entertainment such as Native Deen, comedian Azhar Usman, and poet Khalil Ismail, and reconnect with old friends. The black-tie event also included a “Golden Minaret” awards ceremony. A panel of organizers and community members chose outstanding individuals and organizations from the Muslim community for recognition including the Abdullah Brothers, NFL players who gave up their football season to make Hajj; Muhammad Ali, world’s famous boxer; Ibtihaj Muhammad, women’s fencing champion; 1001 Inventions, an exhibit showcasing American Muslims’ contribution to modern science at the National Geographic Museum; DC Muslims Democratic Caucus for its political engagement; Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) for civil rights; Dr. Aziza Baccouche, a blind nuclear physicist; the Muslim Interscholastic Tournament (MIST) and the Mohammed Schools of Atlanta for education and youth leadership; and the free health clinic of the Muslim Community Center (MCC). “It is an honor to receive this award,” said Hamza Abdullah. “Everything is possible through the power of prayers.” Abdullah stated that American Muslims are in a strong position to influence the electoral process. Young Muslims should continue to be involved in society in order to increase their own representation instead of being defined >> gala Pg 19

In 2008, the Equal Rights Center in D.C.completed a study on the housing crunch in Montgomery County. According to the ERC, the federal government has provided housing assistance for low-income families since 1937. Initially building low-rent public housing and in 1974 the Voucher Program was introduced "to alleviate the effect of concentrating low-income families in high-poverty neighborhoods". The study found a 15 percent discrimination rate against voucher holders when seeking housing – despite the fact that it is illegal to discriminate based on income status in most counties, in Maryland. Many are turned away from renting privately-owned homes due to stereotypes. In Montgomery County, a voucher holder is initially given 90 days to find appropriate housing and use the voucher. Often a voucher is all that stands between a family and homelessness. This particularly incumbent on Muslims landlords not to discriminate as it is not a sin to be poor but it is a sin to not help the poor. Furthermore, it is simply illegal for a Montgomery County landlord to claim that he or she does not participate in the housing voucher program.

MACCPAC Hosts Fundraising Dinner with Government Officials By Omama Altaleb, Muslim Link Staff Reporter
On Sunday Feb. 10, the Muslim American Citizens Coalition and Public Affairs Council (MACCPAC) hosted a community reception and fundraising dinner. MACCPAC is a non-profit organization whose goal is to promote national security, freedom, human rights, justice and peace through building coalitions between the Muslim community and government agencies. About 100-200 attended the dinner at the Fairview Park Marriott in Falls Church, Virginia.
The program started promptly at 6:45 p.m. with a recitation of the Holy Quran by Dr. Dawud Nassimi. Robert Marro, one of the MACCPAC board members, moderated the program. Various Interfaith officials spoke about their experiences with Muslims through Interfaith work. Among the attendees were Virginia representatives Gerry Connolly and Jim Moran. Representative Donna Edwards from Maryland also attended and spoke about her interactions with Muslims.
Since part of MACCPAC’s mission is to educate and prepare Muslim youth to participate in politics, they conduct an annual Youth Leadership Retreat. In August 2012, the retreat was held in Fairfax, VA and in D.C. where youth from Virginia, Maryland, New York, Georgia and New Jersey participated. On stage, MACCPAC fellows and participants in the retreat spoke about their experiences.
Imam Mahdi Bray fundraised for the night telling the audience, “MACCPAC brings Islamic values and a message about justice. We need the strength of the young people.” Imam Bray felt he attended the dinner for an important reason. “I came here to try to fulfill my prayer: Oh Allah please let me do more,” Bray said. Lastly, Dr. Yaqub Mirza, Dr. Amirul Islam, Dr. Sulayman Nyang, Dr. Esam Omeish, Mr. Robert Marro and Dr. Shahida Chowdhury were all honored with Civic and Community Leadership Awards.

Tracing Roots: African American Muslim Who Settled in DC By Omama Altaleb
When Mamout was 60 years old, his master, Brooke Beall, died and Mamout was set free. Mamout bought a house in Georgetown and signed the deed with “Bismillah.” Johnston speculates that Mamout’s body may be buried in his Georgetown residence.
Muslim Link Staff Reporter In light of Black History Month, on Saturday Feb. 2, from 3 to 4 p.m., author James H. Johnston delivered a lecture about the history of a Muslim African American slave, Yarrow Mamout and his family, at the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C. Johnston shared excerpts from his book, “From Slave Ship to Harvard: Yarrow Mamout and the history of an African American family,” and presented evidence from his research. Johnston revealed that Yarrow Mamout is known because his portrait was painted by Charles Willson Peale, an artist who is well-known for painting portraits of presidents. \ Out of the 9.4 million people who were enslaved, only two portraits were painted, one of which is Peale’s piece featuring Mamout. “Peale painted the portrait to show
the world that Black people are equal to White people and there’s no difference,” Johnston said. Mamout and his family were traced back to colonial America, the Civil War and modern times. Johnston inferred Mamout was born in 1736, and was 16 years old when he first came to America in 1756. Johnston discussed how Virginia became a Tobacco economy that employed a workforce -- slavery. When Mamout first came to America, the Beall family

imported him from the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, which brought in 9,000 slaves to the new world, according to Johnston. Mamout’s story is known today because he was an educated slave who knew how to read and write. He originally came from Mali and was a Fulani Muslim who knew the Quran, spoke Arabic, French and some English when he came to America. Johnston showed the audience of both Muslims and non-Muslims a sample of Mamout’s writing which was poetic in nature.
Johnston went through Mamout’s family history and traced their roots and found descendants in Rockville, Md. In addition, Johnston found a Yarrowsburg road in Washington County, Md. Taqiyyah Day, also called, Umm Towfiq, attended the lecture with her son. As an African American Muslim resident in D.C., Day thought it was important to attend the event. “I came because I knew he lived in Georgetown and I was born in Georgetown hospital,” Day said. “I learned that the lives of slaves and their masters were intermingled,” and “though enslaved, the slaves had love and commerce -- you wouldn’t expect that,” Day said.

Annual Essay Panel Contest A Brotherly, Sisterly Event By Aziza Salako
Islamic environment.
It is a cold morning on January 26, 2013 as the empty halls of PGMA begin to slowly fill up with excited kids and their parents. There are over 100 participants in this year’s EPC competition- the Essay Panel Contest. Launched in 2002 by the non-profit Mafiq Foundation, the competition is held at different Washington DC – Baltimore region masajid each year.
EPC’s goal is to be a platform that provides an opportunity for Muslim youth to gain valuable research, writing, presentation, and oratory skills. As Sr. Amyasa Hasein, a parent of four competitors, said, “ Everything about EPC is good, it helps [my children] be more social, and it helps them with their Islam, as it encourages them to study for months on a topic and look up various ahadeeth and Quranic verses.”
Participants ranging from Kindergarten through 12th grade are given an ayah from the Qur'an to reflect on, with the assignment of writing an essay, creating a poster or putting together a multimedia presentation of their choice. With so many contestants of various ages, EPC is a time for youth to interact with their peers socially and academically in an

high schoolers reflected on verse 103 of Surah Ali-Imran, which says: “And hold fast to the rope of Allah and be not divided among yourselves ...(Surah 3:103)”. The high schoolers were told to discuss how Muslims today can create a stronger and more efficient Ummah. The competition, which started at 10:00am, began with an opening speech delivered by the president of the Mafiq Foundation. After an overview of the day’s program, students were sent to different classrooms to begin their speeches. The younger children were quite excited as they spoke, full of pride, while their parents snapped pictures with their smartphones and cameras. Middle and high schoolers anxiously paced as they waited for their turn to speak, each practicing silently and gath-
ering their thoughts. After about two hours, everyone had given their speech and it was lunch time; participants, parents, judges and organizers gathered to discuss the day’s events over pizza and subs. Taheeb Coker, a chairman of PGMA’s executive council remarked that “It [EPC] gets more and more interesting each year, as the participants increase... and I can see their excitement...EPC gives our children an opportunity to develop their skills for our community.” After lunch, contestants were allowed to walk around and look at the different posters that were submitted on the theme of brotherhood. Even though the overall number of cases is dropping, the proportion of Washington's population living with HIV/ AIDS is almost 3%, markedly higher than the 0.4% for the U.S. as a whole. A 1% prevalence is termed a "severe and generalized epidemic" by the World Health Organization. The really bad news is that HIV infection amongst heterosexual African American women in the District’s poor has doubled in two years, from 6.3 percent to 12.1 percent, according to a study by the D.C. Department of Health. There is some good news, no HIV positive child has been born in the District since 2009. Those who live and treat HIV know that it is much more than a physical ailment. It affects the entire person, physical and emotional. And for many, the best way to treat an emotional issue is through religion and spirituality.
"When HIV hits, many people begin to look at their lives in an effort to understand why they got HIV. This is an opportunity to examine the past, taking stock of one's life up to the point of diagnosis and trying to figure out where life will take the person after their diagnosis," says Mark Cichocki RN, an HIV/AIDS nurse educator at the University of Michigan's HIV/AIDS Treatment Program. "Religion and spirituality helps a person examine their life, interpret what they find, and apply what they have learned to their new life with HIV. Simply put, spirituality and religion helps a person find a "new meaning to life" after their HIV diagnosis." Mark is the author of the book "Living with HIV: A Patient's Guide". People find solace in faith, in their communities and in their places of worship. >> shunned Pg 22

MyJihad Campaign Comes to Area Metro Stations By Muslim Link Contributing Writers Lately, the DC Metro station has become a battleground of ideas about Jihad. First, the Defeat Jihad anti-Muslim ad campaign, and now a fresh ad campaign by Muslims; the "MyJihad" nation-wide campaign aims to clarify what scholars and mainstream Muslims believe the term Jihad means. Many Muslims are scared to use the word jihad due to the stigma attached to it. In an effort to take back the word that has been hijacked by extremists on both ends of the spectrum, Ahmed Rehab, an activist in Chicago and a group of his friends launched a campaign. CAIR Chicago initially helped sponsor this campaign along with private donors, but it is promoted by ordinary Muslims who are not affiliated with any specific organization, says Rehab.
Ads showing everyday Muslims talking about their daily struggles and asking the viewers "What is Yours?" On the website, MyJihad.org explains “for Muslim and anti-Muslim extremists (who ironically are on perfect agreement) jihad is synonymous with terrorism, blowing up things and spilling innocent blood.” The site adds “For many others, including members of the media and academia and even some Western dictionaries, jihad is often mistranslated simply as ‘holy war.’” The campaign notes that "the “My” in MyJihad is as important as the “Jihad.” The purpose of the campaign is to bring forth the mainstream majority moderate voice that is often squeezed out between two extremes." The campaign asks ordinary Muslims to challenge the ideology and misrepre-

MISTastic 2013: Kick Starting the MIST Season By Masouna Kochaji - Muslim Link Contributing Writer
The annual Muslim Inter Scholastic Tournament (MIST) is an opportunity for high schoolers to come together and positively compete in an Islamic atmosphere. Competitions range from Quran recitation to art and short films. MISTastic is the pep rally held by the DC region to kick off the MIST season. It provides an intro for new MISTers and a reunion for those coming back for another year. As the high schoolers filed into the room, DC MIST Regional Director, Adam Kareem (pictured above), went around greeting the old and new MIST competitors.
When the competitions finally came to a close, the judges began to tally up the results. Teams waited patiently and truly reflected on the experience. At MISTastic it isn't all about the competition, it was about meeting new people and learning from one another. MIST gives students an opportunity to grow and express themselves in an Islam-rich environment, and for some students its one of the only times they get such an opportunity. Many thanks to the organizers of MIST, and May Allah bless them for all that they do for the youth in the community.
MISTastic serves as an opportunity for MIST teams to win points before the MIST weekend in April. This years MIST theme is "The Patience of Champions: Rising to a Better Self", and through MISTastic, students were able to put the theme into action. Through numerous competitions MISTers were tested both physically and mentally. One activity required teams to build an object written on a tiny slip of paper, the twist was that the teams couldn't speak. This activity tested the strength of teams as they learned to communicate without words. From stacking cups to seeing who could answer MIST history questions the fastest, MISTastic had it all. Gambian sisters getting their thyroid checkups, a Caucasian man with a long ponytail filling out forms. She does not have insurance and the clinic is a life saver. She pays the $35 co-pay as she is not a Montgomery county resident. "I am more than happy with everyone here, the staff and the doctors, they are so polite and cooperative," says Izhar. Known county-wide as the Muslim Clinic, it first opened its door almost ten years ago. The new expansion project is complete. A vast open space welcomes patients. 6 examination rooms, a kitchen, a procedure room and a pharmacy; this is not a hole in the wall but a well-run practice. The ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for February 15, 2013. $350, 000 paid for a new pavilion on the MCC grounds on New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring, MD. $70,000 of the funds came from Montgomery County Executive, $50,000 from Montgomery County Council, $150,000 from State of Maryland for capital improvement and the rest from Clinic's own funds. This expansion augments the clinic's space by a third to 4500 square foot. Four sleek windows seat receptionists. Sr. Naseema Rehman and Sr. Mensura Imam, visibly Muslim in their hijabs register the patients as they come in for their appointments. The clinic aims full digitalization by next year. COMMUNITY NEWS | 15 uninsured, low-income residents of the County. The MCC Medical Clinic has received generous grants from the Kaiser Permanente, Susan G. Komen Foundation, Healthcare Initiative Foundation, Maryland State, Montgomery County, and the Muslim Community Center. Dr. Asif Qadri, the Clinic's Medical Director had been writing prescriptions for family members of the MCC community visiting from overseas. "My wife and I used to bring the kids here; I joined the board and would see elderly who had a lot of health issues," says Dr. Qadri, his soft disposition that makes him popular with the patients evident with the many staff members that walked into his office. "We used to wonder what can we do to show that Muslims care." There were many doctors in the local community. The effort trickled until a health committee of seven doctors formed, including Dr. Khawaja. It stalled again over the fear of malpractice litigation until Dr. Qadri, a cardiologist and Dr. Muhammad Yousef, bought private malpractice insurance. It took years of convincing, but in June 2003, the clinic started in a few rooms of the defunct childcare center. Dr. Yousef gave the donation to make the initial purchases and MCC provided matching funds for grants. Through the years, MCC continued to provide direct financial aid to those patients who are unable to pay for the diagnostic tests and medicines needed for their treatment. A significant breakthrough occurred in 2007, when Doug Duncan, the former Chief Executive of Montgomery County invited the MCC Clinic to become a part of the safety net clinics which would provide the much needed funding of $80,000. Under the grant, the clinic receives $62 for every resident

Catholic Charities, USA Healthcare Initiative Foundation provide additional services. "We never get stuck wondering where to send the patient," says Dr. Qadri. All the cardiology, Hepatitis B & C cases are referred to the National Institute of Health. Many times costing the patients about a $1000 out of pocket. grams, aims to reduce poverty in the County and to involve the low-income population in developing and carrying out anti-poverty programs in the County. "I represent the whole of the community in Gaithersburg, but I also have the opportunity to make the niche community of ICM aware of political situations that might directly affect them," says Bryant. At the first CAB meeting he attended, Bryant met with Councilman Leventhal and learned of his passion for supporting low-income housing, and the challenges Leventhal faced with residents who are resistant to affordable housing initiatives in the county. Many times affluent neighbors do not want low-income housing in their neighborhoods. Residents fear that an influx of subsidized family housing units will decrease the property value of their homes and bring increased crime, noise, traffic into otherwise quiet neighborhoods. A Muslim and father of five, Bryant believes that it is part of his faith to want for others that he wants for his own family. He says, “What I understand that we do at the CAB is to encourage under represented residents—who often tend to be low-income—to advocate for themselves according to their interests praying

against well prepared and organized residents who are most often heard by decision makers in the county.” He does not find himself at the crossroads representing both communities as there is a definite overlap. Bryant says that some may believe that there is a stereotype that Muslims are wealthy. "We have a very robust zakat (charity) program at ICM, and there are a number of congregants who are barely making ends meet," said Bryant. In Montgomery County, 37% of homeowners pay greater than 30% of their income for housing and are considered housing burdened. CountyStat reports that housing production and preservation efforts peaked in 2010 at 2,783 units, and will trend downward for the foreseeable future given recent funding reductions. "The Board advises the County Executive and the County Council on matters relating to the needs of poor and lowincome individuals and families," said Mary Anderson, the Public Affairs Officer with the Department of Health and Human Services. "With the county's budget challenges these boards keep competing needs of their communities at the top of the agenda."
the need is the strong rental market and continuing rising rents. This is a volunteer community service position, not a political position. "I tend to think of a political position as one where the elected is an official representative of an office on behalf of a constituency," says Bryant. It is an advisory group that can help influence policy by making recommendations. Anderson says each board has its own personality and the amount of work accomplished depends on the members. Some boards have influenced legislation at the state level. "The Commission on Aging helped draft legislation for the State General Assembly that eventually became law," said Anderson. Raising awareness especially about filing taxes and qualifying for Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is part of Bryant’s position. This tax season, he will be spending several hours helping with free tax preparation for families whose income is below $51,000 and individuals earning under $35,000, as he is an IRS qualified volunteer tax preparer.
preparation assistance on the county’s 311 number. In addition, The United Planning Organization will be offering free tax assistance until April 15 at the Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene Center in Southeast Washington, DC where you will also find Bryant preparing taxes. Bryant believes as a member of the board everyone is focused on the task of helping low-income residents; if they come to an impasse in the policy making process he will rely on his faith. "Like many people, religion is a deciding factor when we encounter moral dilemmas. When it comes to taking a stand on moral principles, I will continue to rely on Islam to inform my decisions. I guess you could say that I take the positions of many Republicans on conservative, or moral, issues although I am not a Republican," said Bryant. While he does not rule out running for political office in the future, he does not have any political aspirations at this point. "Allah is the best of planners," said Bryant. Boards and commissions meet one or two evenings per month, have three year terms, and most are advisory in nature. Representatives are needed on many boards and we encourage other MoCo residents to visit http://www6. montgomerycountymd.gov/mcgtmpl. asp?url=/content/exec/boards/boards. asp for more information to get involved in the process.
In the current economy the demand for affordable housing will continue to increase with growth in the number of retired seniors and in employees laid off or facing reduced hours. Adding to

with more coming. Islam comes when all else fails. There are a lot of Muslims here and we’re working hard to teach Islam to everyone.” It’s common to drive down Martin Luther King, Jr. Avenue, Alabama Avenue or Benning Road and see young Black men wearing kufis with their pants rolled up expressing their Islamic identity. At 15, Jabar Rahman, (name changed) was interested in Islam after hearing about it from his 14 –year-old friend. “He told me about Islam and it sounded good. He invited me to go with him to the Benning Road Mosque (Al Islam). I talked to the Imam and he asked me why I wanted to be a Muslim. I told him that I liked what I had learned about Islam and wanted to try it.” “I want to learn more things, I want to meet more Muslims and I really like fasting for Ramadan,” he told The Muslim Link. Jabar is a student at Maya Angelou Public Charter School where 8th grade teacher Nasser Muhammad has witnessed the growth of Islam in their students.

That’s a step they can skip.” “I meet with the Muslim students several times throughout the year. We talk about Islam and Muslim behavior. I want them to be the best model students as Muslims. The school allows the high school students with good grades, leadership skills, and good behavior the opportunity to leave school and attend Jummah prayer service on Fridays. The middle school students can leave if they have their parents permission.” Mary Harrison has lived in SE all of her life. She’s also witnessed the growth of Islam in her community. Two of her sons were incarcerated and came home Muslims. “I was a little upset at first but I’ve seen the changes in them for the good. They are polite and well mannered. They take care of their children and every time I turned around they are praying.” “I wasn’t surprised when their friends became Muslim too because these young people want something different and I guess Islam has what they want. I’m just glad they’re not in jail and have left their criminal behavior in the past. I thank Allah for that,” she said with a smile.

Research shows that people seek out religion and spirituality after an HIV diagnosis. Ironically, even though newly diagnosed people report being more religious, feeling alienated especially in the Muslim community is the norm. According to Islamic Resources and Muslim Participation in Responding to HIV & AIDS, a report published by Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN), there is often a popular misconception amongst Muslim communities that if a person has been infected

The idea that HIV and AIDS is a punishment from Allah, and that you’re being punished for leading a promiscuous life or immoral life is the dominant discourse in the Muslim community. There are a number of asexual ways that HIV can be transmitted, such as blood transfusion or mother to child transmission, that do not involve sexual interaction of any kind. The discourse needs to change and compassionate support is the need of the day. "When I told some of the sisters at the masjid, they said "you shouldn't tell anybody" or "I don't think you should

They returned to all parts of the city but many have returned to SE DC. “A lot of brothers are coming home Muslim,” explained Abdul Malik who runs a program for Muslim boys in the Benning Terrace public housing community. “They were looked up to before they went in and even more looked up to when they came home.” “People see their friends come home Muslim and see the changes in them. Everyone wants to be Muslims when they see this. My goal is to turn this whole community into Muslims.” Imam Abdul Aliyy spent 27 years incarcerated and knows the great influence Islam has in prison. “The biggest group in prison is the Muslims, then the gangs. If you have 200 Crips, you will have 400 Muslims. People hear so much about Islam, they want to know what’s really going on. Youth are coming in droves. They will be the next Islamic leaders.” Five days a week Abdul Malik and his fellow Muslim friends Imam Abdul Aliyy, Jamal Ato Chappelle and Abdul Razzak Tahir run an after school program for boys. From 5:00 pm -7:00 pm they do homework, team building exercises, dinner, physical training and Islamic Studies. Nearly 25 boys are a part of this effort with ages ranging from seven to 15.

For 10 year old Dreaun Young, learning about Islam means learning to pray, reciting Al Fatiha in Arabic and learning about brotherhood. “I’ve learned that I can’t eat pork and how to do good things in life.” What do the boys want to know most of all? “Teach me how to be safe from the hell fire,” said one young man. Their program receives very little funding and support. “Imam Musa (Masjid Al-Islam) is our biggest supporter. But we need so much more.” But that doesn’t deter them from teaching the faith. Instead of candy and certificates as rewards for learning, students in their program get kufis and prayer rugs. The rise of Islam is not just with the males though they dominate the trend. “I see young girls are drawn to Islam as well and we want to steer them in the right direction,” said Nailah Anthony who works with Muslim girls in SE. “We give them the Holy Qu’ran, the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and Hadith.” “A lot of them are drawn to Islam when they get in trouble and we give them the knowledge to stay out of trouble. They need support and Mohammed hopes this group for Muslim men and women living and struggling with HIV on a day to day basis can offer them a shoulder. other in Me and those who give to each other generously in me," The words of this Hadith Qudsi resonate with Mohammed. She came to Islam after her diagnosis and finds great joy in the religion. Despite all the negative connotations, at the heart of it a person living with HIV is ill. The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) attacks the body’s immune systems and increases the risk of developing serious infections. The Muslim response to any disease is based on what was taught by the Prophet Muhammad in the hadith concerning the sick. "[If a] Muslim visits a (sick) Muslim in the morning seventy thousand angels will bless (and pray for) him until the evening, and if he visits him in the evening, seventy thousand angels will bless (and pray for) him until the morning, and fruits from Paradise will be his." (Tirmidhi 3:292) Sister Sharia hopes to spread awareness and offer support. She handles all the public relations for the group. The new support group hopes to host a meeting once a month, with a meeting on the first weekend in March. These meetings will initially cater to brothers and sisters who are 40+ years of age. "A couple of sisters are trying to get people to come. We need to let people know we do exist and we are touching others' lives," says Mohammed. Mohammed had initially used online Meetup to advertise the group but most of the people who responded were from overseas. cialties so patients could access most of their care at the clinic. Last year the clinic had 11,000 patients visits. This year the projection is 12,000 to 15,000 consultations. "We could easily double patient visits," says Br. Quraishi, the Chairman of MCC. Montgomery Cares program has provided medical care to about 30,000 underprivileged adults. This represents over 200,000 consultations. "An increase of around 27% per year in the number of patients who have access to the program thanks to the new care centers, better internal management of consultation times in clinics and better communication. This is especially thanks to the fact that four clinics are taking part in programs to improve health care organization." This includes MCC. "They have been a wonderful partner and a strong presence in our work. In terms of their relative role, for the fiscal year they served 2500 out of the 30,000 patients that we serve yearly. They are not one of our biggest clinics but have a large impact as they do serve many from outside Montgomery County," says Jean Hochron, Senior Administrator with Montgomery Cares Department of Health and Human Services. In 2010, the clinic launched the "Women Wellness Program". Dr Abdullah, a prominent OB-GYN, is on board. A Komen grant of $150,000 provided for a 20 hour-a-week patient navigator, a 2-houra-week physician consultant, a 20-houra-week nurse coordinator, and a program evaluator. 15 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed. In a strategic shift in patient care, the clinic has started charging a co-pay from its patients. "Adding the co-pay has given [the patients] their honor back," says Dr. Ejaz as he helps the reception staff get ready for a blind visitor by clearing out the small bookshelves that lined the back wall. In June 2006, a mission statement was formulated to “provide quality medical care to low-income uninsured residents. With Obamacare looming in the near future, the clinic started accepting Medicaid insurance in December 2012, as

the funding from the county will not be renewed. The clinic activating protocols for Medicare and other private insurance in the near future. "Regardless of the outcome of healthcare reform, we will be able to survive," says Dr. Qadri. Hochron says that despite the changes in healthcare reform there is still a need for the services that Montgomery Cares provides as many people will not be covered. "Their expansion of mission is really important, gives them greater ability to serve a variety of people. It is one thing to have insurance and quite another thing to find a comfortable medical home that accepts that insurance," said Hochron. The acceptance as a Medicaid provider is a long and complicated process, MCC Clinic is going through all the administrative hassles of setting up billing protocols, site visits, and registering with Managed Care organizations. "They didn't lose their nerve, and are serving as a model and leader among our clinic community," says Jean Hochron. It started as a volunteer project to provide free care, but the clinic's continued success can be attributed to two key decisions. One to make this a community project, not a family or individual project. The other was that the clinic management were not afraid of changing the organization model to reflect growth and circumstances. The transition from all volunteer to paid staff, and then the handing over of the administration by the Medical Director, Dr. Qadri to Dr. Ejaz all aided in the phenomenal growth. They also hired a grant writer. Now if one person leaves, the organization will not fall apart which often happens to other volunteer projects. The clinic is appointment only, although no one is turned way for not having an appointment. "No social security numbers are kept in our records," says Dr. Qadri. The clinic follows county directives that no patient is refused care. MCC Clinic is the second largest Islamic faith-based clinic in the U.S. The dream is to make a full fledge Muslim hospital one day. Pioneers like the Ummah Clinic in Los Angeles and MCC are cynosures for the many Muslim clinics emerging throughout the nation and Dr. Azad Ejaz, the Clinic's Executive Director hopes that a network can be established. "Many Islamic Centers are trying to establish their own clinics, we
need to make a large scale effort," says Dr. Ejaz. Br. Quraishi shared that they didn't have a model to follow but MCC makes their own experience available to any organization who plans to start their own clinic. The hope is that Muslim organizations and Islamic Centers can cooperate, and other Islamic Centers in the area can start specialty departments in their clinics; the dream of building a Muslim hospital could be owned by everyone. As the staff gathered in the small lunch room, the Diaspora of ethnicities and religions was evident. 50 percent of the staff and patients are non-Muslim. Sikh doctors and African American RNs work alongside each other. Easy banter between the Physician's Assistant resident from George Washington University and the staff pharmacist while eating rice pilaf makes a family feeling. Eating with them is Carrol Brown, NP a Kaiser Permanente employee, she and two others are on loan to the clinic by Kaiser. The Kaiser Permanente Community Ambassador Program sends nurse practitioners and physician assistants to selected safety net health clinics including MCC. MCC Clinic's attitude towards healing is about making the patient comfortable."We are very careful to make appointment with same sex doctors, accommodate language concerns as much as we can, as communication aids in healing," says. Dr. Ejaz. R.Y. drove from Virginia. He comes to the clinic every 6 weeks. A diabetic patient, he called in the morning and is given a same day appointment. A Christian from India, he has been in the US for the better part of 25 years but does not have insurance. "There is nothing like this in Virginia," says R.Y., "the doctors are patient, they ask in depth questions; alert you if something is not right." Comparing the services to regular doctors office who are charge high fees and spend a limited time with patients, his only suggestion was to add a paid transportation service. This is a well thought out part of the MCC Clinic culture. "We are very strict with our staff, no one cuts corners, [our patients] do not come for a handout," states Dr. Qadri. Staff and volunteers have been removed who do not mesh in with the culture. of diversity, inclusiveness and punctuality.
Every patient interviewed said that the staff is courteous and very friendly. "We try to bring humility, an Islamic principle, in our people. We believe communication help in the healing process," emphasizes Dr. Ejaz. Sensitivity training is given to the 24 multicultural and multilingual staff and 40 volunteers who man the clinic about the variety of people who walk through the doors. The Muslim Clinic is known county wide for its reputation of "not prioritizing access to consultations according to religion". The voluntary doctors allow the barriers between doctors and patients to be lowered and that it makes dialogue easier and care premium. Money does not factor in, so the time devoted to the patient is only limited by the number in the waiting room. The doctors can also expand their roles becoming health advisors rather than just service providers. "If the doctors need 2 hours to spend with the patient they can, they are not under time pressure," says Dr. Qadri. Other services offered are a volunteer psychiatrist, a diabetes prevention program, a social worker for domestic violence cases, sonograms, ECHO, EKG, and pulmonary function testing is available on site. There is a full-fledged eye clinic on the premise. Plans include adding a dental clinic and looking for satellite offices. "The largest area of job growth is in the medical field, esp. technicians. We need to help our youth find jobs," says Br. Quraishi. Helping the Muslim community remains a primary concern. "We encourage volunteers; 16 high school students who volunteered with us are in various stages of becoming physicians. Our next major plan is to start a nurse training center and a health vocational center for the community's women and youth," announces Dr. Ejaz. Dawah is the principle that guides the MCC clinic. "The largest impact we have had is we have taken the fear out from the public about entering a masjid," says Br. Quraishi. " After 9/11 nonMuslims who were reluctant to meet Muslims have no fear [about coming] to MCC," states Dr. Ejaz. The Prophetic Tradition of mercy to all mankind is evident in the halls and examination rooms of the MCC Clinic and there is no better call to Islam.

The Bureau is launching an ambitious new investigation, which will seek to identify as many as possible of those killed in US covert drone strikes in Pakistan, whether civilian or militant.
But this is a small proportion of the minimum 2,629 people who appear to have so far died in CIA drone strikes in Pakistan. The Bureau’s work suggests 475 of them were likely to have been civilians.
The Bureau is raising some of the money for this project through a crowd-funding appeal.
‘At the moment we know the names of fewer than 20% of those killed in Pakistan’s tribal areas. At least 2,000 deaths still remain publicly anonymous,’ said Chris Woods, who leads the Bureau’s covert drone war team.
Today the US-based Freedom of the Press Foundation, a crowd-funding organisation aimed at raising money for public interest journalism, announced it is backing the Bureau’s Naming the Dead project. The Bureau’s new investigation will be one of four recipients of Freedom of the Press Foundation’s latest campaign.
As part of our ongoing monitoring and reporting of CIA and Pentagon drone strikes, the Bureau has already recorded the names of hundreds of people killed in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. At the end of January 2013, the Bureau was able to identify by name 213 people killed by drones in Pakistan who were reported to be middle- or senior-ranking militants.
‘Our aim will be to identify by name many hundreds more of those killed. A significant number of those identities will be known by local communities, by US and Pakistani officials, and by militant groups. We hope to convince them to share that information.’ The project has already secured substan-

SmartPlanet.com, September 3, 2012 Apple’s app store has removed an application which allows users to track U.S. military drone strikes for ‘questionable content’. After the British newspaper The Guardian ran an interactive map of American drone strikes earlier this month, which pinpointed the locations in Pakistan where missiles from unmanned aerial vehicles struck suspected terrorist bases,
New York University student Josh Begley took the data to develop an iPhone app. Begley’s app, called Drone+, was dedicated exclusively to tracking drone strikes. Every time a drone strike occurred, an alert was sent to the user, and location could be tracked through an interactive map. In the first instance, Apple rejected the app for being “not useful”. President Obama, Did or Did You Not Kill Anwar al-Awlaki? By David Cole
There may be extraordinary occasions when killing a citizen is permissible, but it should never be acceptable for the government to refuse to acknowledge the act. How can we be free if our government has the power to kill us in secret? And how can a sovereign authority be accountable to the people if the sovereign can refuse to own up to its actions?
David Cole teaches constitutional law at Georgetown University and is the legal affairs correspondent for the Nation. He is the author of “The Torture Memos: Rationalizing the Unthinkable.” February 8, 2013 There are plenty of problems with President Obama’s targeted killings in the war against terrorism: The policy remains secret in most aspects, involves no judicial review, has resulted in the deaths of innocent civilians, has been employed far from any battlefield and has sparked deep anti-American resentment in countries where we can ill afford it.
But when it comes to the particular legal issue raised in a recently leaked “white paper” from the Justice Department — namely, whether it is legal to kill Americans with drones — one problem
looms largest: The policy permits the government to kill its citizens in secret while refusing to acknowledge, even after the fact, that it has done so.
When Argentina’s military junta secretly abducted and killed its citizens during that country’s “dirty war” in the 1970s, the world labeled these acts “disappearances” and condemned them as violations of human rights. A disappearance is not just an abduction or killing, but an unacknowledged abduction >> KILL Pg 27
Twitter Reveals US Government Makes 80% Of Info Requests By RT.com, February 1, 2013
publication of the transparency data would be helpful in two ways – “to raise public awareness about these invasive requests,” and “to enable policy makers to make more informed decisions.”
Twitter has released its second transparency report, which demonstrated a frightening increase in requests for user data by the US government and ignited serious concerns over privacy and free expression. The list disclosed data requests from over 30 nations, and revealed that the US government was responsible for 815 of the 1,009 information requests in the second half of 2012 – just over 80 percent of all inquiries. Twenty percent of all US requests were ‘under seal,’ meaning that users were not notified that their information was accessed. The overall number of requests worldwide also steadily increased last year,

or killing. To “disappear” citizens not only deprives them of their liberty or life without fair process but is deeply corrosive of democratic politics, casting a shadow of fear over all. The late senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan once said that if he had to choose between a country with the right to vote but no habeas corpus, or a country that had habeas corpus but no right to vote, he’d choose the country with habeas corpus every time. His point was that if the government has the power to lock up its citizens without having to justify its actions to a court, as habeas corpus requires, all other rights are meaningless. If that’s true of detention without judicial review, it is even more true with respect to unacknowledged executive killing. We may think we are free to say what we want, exercise our religion and enjoy the protections of privacy, but none of those guarantees really exists if the president can order us killed in secret. Killing is not like torture. Torture is never justified, even in wartime. But killing is an integral, if unfortunate, aspect of war. Targeted killing is therefore not inherently illegal; after all, it beats the tragically untargeted killing used in the World War II bombings of Dresden, London and Hiroshima. Nor is it always forbidden to kill an American. If a U.S. citizen were fighting alongside al-Qaeda on an Afghan battlefield, would anyone question the right of U.S. troops to shoot and kill him? And President Abraham Lincoln violated no constitutional guarantee by authorizing Union troops to fire on American citizens fighting for the Con-

man was killed by a drone. That fact has been reported on the front pages of the nation’s newspapers. Obama himself held a news conference to announce that Awlaki “was killed,” but he very consciously used the passive voice, not admitting any U.S. responsibility.
But since when is it constitutional for the president to deliberately kill an American while refusing to admit that he has done so? Due process forbids the taking of life or liberty without fair procedures and prohibits any official action that “shocks the conscience,” as the Supreme Court has stated. If secret killing does not shock the conscience, then nothing does.
The administration initially treated the drone killing program as covert, refusing to speak about it. Over time, various Obama administration officials have given public speeches defending the legality of targeted killing in general. But the administration has not admitted killing anyone specific outside Afghanistan with a drone.
Anwar al-Awlaki, an American citizen, was killed by a drone strike in Yemen on Sept. 30, 2011. Awlaki is reported to have been an operational leader of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, an organization the administration considers an “associated force” of al-Qaeda. White House officials reportedly say he was involved in planning at least
The unacknowledged killing of foreign nationals during wartime is disturbing enough, though there may be circumstances in which it is warranted. But in our democracy, it can never be permissible for the president to identify an American citizen for extinction, place him on a “kill list,” authorize a CIA agent or military officer to kill him — and then refuse to admit that it was
done. Whether the killing is legal or not, accountability is impossible absent a public statement of responsibility for the act. Indeed, the Obama administration is opposing lawsuits that challenge Awlaki’s killing and seek disclosure of the documents related to it, in part on the grounds that its role in the killing has never been, and cannot be, acknowledged. If a government of the people and under law means anything, it must mean that the government cannot kill its people in secret and then avoid legal scrutiny by disavowing responsibility. Administration insiders have hinted that Washington cannot admit that it is directing the drones, even if the world knows it is doing so, because other countries have consented to drone strikes in their territory only on the condition that they go officially unacknowledged. Using lethal force inside another nation’s borders, absent that nation’s consent, is generally a violation of international law, so there is good reason to seek consent. But can an agreement with a foreign country override the president’s constitutional obligation to take American lives only in a publicly acknowledged and legally accountable way? Obama’s nominee to head the CIA, John Brennan, has put it well: “I think the rule should be that if we’re going to take actions overseas that result in the deaths of people, the United States should take responsibility for that,” he said last fall. So, President Obama, did you or did you not kill Anwar al-Awlaki? cole@law.georgetown.edu Source: The Washington Post, February 8, 2013

Islam
The Sunnah of Love By Shaykh Yahya Ibrahim, Muslimmatter.corg
I often get contacted from couples trying to salvage and mend broken trust and exponentially inhospitable relationships. I usually respond within a couple of weeks, detailing my unwillingness to “counsel” from a virtual distance that begets unilateralism. Horror stories of infidelity, violence, and arrogance abound. Naturally, there is no greater issue facing the Muslim communities of the West that is more pressing and multidimensional than that of family relations. The statistics are frightening, imams are untrained in effective counseling methods, mosques are under pressure, Islamically-oriented marital counselors are unheard of and professionalism in terms of confidentiality seem non-existent. An important dimension of domestic marital problems, as I see, is that the Sunnah of Love and Gallantry seems to be overlooked or dismissed as a longgone era. The Sunnah, that is taught at times, seems to overlook amazing instances of passion, valor, fidelity and sacrifice in the name of true love. Instances from the life of the Prophet sala Allahu 'alihi wasSalaam and his companions builds a comprehensive system of devotion – a Sunnah of Love. Love. The real kind – the genuine love between a man and his wife that stems from a seed of love that is planted by Allāh in the hearts of those who are true in submission to the Dispenser of Love and Comfort. A seed, literally and figuratively, in Arabic symbolizes love. Houb in Arabic is derived from the same root for the word Haab – seed. The nature of the two words is functionally similar.
....
Love begins as a tiny speck – a seed that is buried deep in the folds of a receptive heart, carrying the potential of stunning beauty, nourishing sustenance, exotic delicacy, wealth of commodity, shading shelter, and resurgent growth that is stabilized through deep roots that withstand trauma. Amr ibn al-'As radyAllāhu 'anhu was appointed by the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam to command an important mission. He was handpicked from many capable individuals who were in fact better than him. Feeling a sense of pride in being selected, he radyAllāhu 'anhu asks the Prophet, in front of a congregation of Sahabah about who he sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam, loves? The Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam responds in the way that all of our wives would hope we would respond, by naming his wife, Aisha. Consider that the Prophet would teach, sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam, that if we love a friend, we need to let them know it. It was with this hope that 'Amr thought to ask that question after the favorable appointment was given to him. Thinking that his question has been misunderstood he clarifies, saying that he meant from amongst the companions who did the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam love? The Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam responds, “Her Father.” He does not respond, “Abu Bakr radyAllāhu 'anhu.” His response alludes to 'Aisha radyAllāhu 'anha as she was still on his mind and in his heart. Love. 'Aisha radyAllāhu 'anha, al-Humayra – The Rosy Cheeked one, as the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam affectionately called her; Umm al-Mu'mineen – the Mother of the Faithful was loved and loved in return.
The Sunnah of Love is not whimsical or outrageously simplistic as you find depicted often in multibillion-dollar literary/theatrical sagas. No vampires competing with werewolves here. It is not ambivalent and shifty. It is built on mutual acceptance of the decree of the Divine in search of comfort, repose and peace of mind. It flourishes, paradoxically, in the mundanity of life. Finding fleeting moments of intimacy between stacks of dishes, soiled diapers, mounds of work emails, grocery lists and infinite commitments are its hallmark. A look that you receive as you rush out the door, a quick phone call itemizing how the day is going or an SMS that contains a list of groceries to buy on the way home punctuated with an I love You, are all indicators. 'Aisha radyAllāhu 'anha and the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam would use code language with each other denoting their love. She asked the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam how he would describe his love for her. The Prophet Muḥammad answered, saying: “Like a strong binding knot.” The more you tug, the stronger it gets, in other words. Every so often 'Aisha would playfully ask, “How is the knot?” The Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam would answer, “As strong as the first day (you asked).” So I begin to wonder, as should you, about what has happened to our community? Why is it so hard to speak frankly of one's love for his wife? Why is it “soft” for a brother to praise his spouse? How is it the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam can kiss his wife, as he exits to leave his home to lead the faithful in prayer and some in our community find it difficult to just smile? How is it that the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam can stop a whole army, in times of hostility in a region of the desert that had no water to camp
near, to look for his wife's misplaced bead necklace and some find it difficult to give a deserved compliment every now and again? Since when is sternness considered leadership and harshness associated with married life? How is it that the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam can mend his clothes and look after the domestic affairs of his household, and a brother can't put away a plate, let alone wash it unless the wife is sick? How is it that the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam can forbid upon himself milk infused with honey so as to please his wives, who complained of its scent, culminating in Allāh revealing a chapter in the Qur'an forbidding the Prophet from forbidding the lawful upon himself, “Because you seek to please your wives (66:1).” Yet, some in our community will not even give the rightfully due to their wife? How is it that the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam teaches not to boycott a person for more than three days, and a brother can be out all day at work and feel apprehensive at the thought of returning home to a disgruntled partner who will give them the silent treatment over a petty squabble that has extended into weeks of dreary, isolating depression? How is it that the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam forbids a person to lead another man in prayer in his home without permission, yet some brothers due to constant bickering and negative criticism feel more like the help than the king of the castle? Misreading the Sunnah, and not linking it to all matters of our life, including the mundane aspects is a justified criticism. All of us learn through the course of our elementary studies of Islam that if you

Japan ranked the secondhighest on the list after the US; however, the US made 753 more demands for information than Japan.

Google released a statement marking the occasion, saying that the company “[doesn’t] want our services to be used in harmful ways,” and that it is “important that laws protect you against overly broad requests for your personal information.” Earlier this month, France ruled that Twitter must disclose to authorities the identities of people writing anti-Semitic tweets using the hashtags #UnBonJuif [A Good Jew] and #UnJuifMort [A Dead Jew]. The social networking platform will be fined 1,000 euros a day until it complies.
The publication of the survey came shortly after Google published its own transparency report, which showed a similarly disturbing 25 percent rise in data requests from government authorities. The report also revealed that the US had made the most requests for private information to Google of any government: Over 8,438 in the second half of 2012. UK-based rights group Privacy International later commented that “Google, Facebook and Twitter are highly vulnerable to government intrusion.”
“I am alarmed by the number of government requests and concerned that so many are done with merely a subpoena,” said John Simpson, a consumer advocate with the California-based group Consumer Watchdog. “A warrant should be required.” RT, previously known as Russia Today, is a global multilingual television news network based in Russia. RT was the first all-digital Russian TV network.

What you probably were not taught, and what was glossed over, was the fact that the permissibility and the legislation of that enormously important function were revealed because of the lost bead necklace. You were not told that the love of the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam for 'Aisha resulted in him ordering a marching army to stop at a location without water and camp out at night with a dwindling supply of water for their consumption. Her father, Abu Bakr radyAllāhu 'anhu, was furious with her for mentioning what, to him, seemed to be a trivial matter. You were not told how the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam ordered the troops to look for a necklace in the sands of the Arabian Desert, all for the comfort of 'Aisha. You were, probably, not informed how verses in the Qur'an descended upon the Prophet sallallāhu

'alayhi wa sallam at such an occasion resulting in the joyous celebration of the Sahabah for the ease that Allāh has provided for our Ummah as a result of this occurrence. That is the Sunnah of Love. You look after the near, even if it may inconvenience the far. You would have heard that the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam mended his own shoes at times. What you may not have heard was how once as he was sitting in a room with 'Aisha radyAllāhu 'anha fixing his shoes, 'Aisha happened to look to his blessed forehead and noticed that there were beads of sweat on it. Mesmerized by the majesty of that sight she remained transfixed staring at him long enough for him to notice. The Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam said, “What's the matter?” She replied, “If Abu Bukair Al-Huthali, the poet, saw you, he would know that his poem was written for you.” The Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam asked, “What did he say?” She replied, “Abu Bukair said that if you looked to the majesty of the moon, it twinkles and lights up the world for everybody to see.”
So the Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam got up, walked to Aisha, kissed her between the eyes, and said, “Wallahi ya Aisha, you are like that to me and more.” That is the Sunnah of Love. From the earliest days of Islam, 'Ali radiya Allahu 'anhu was a continuous witness of the life habits of Rasool-ulAllāh sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam. He was a witness to Love. 'Ali, radyAllāhu 'anhu, arrived home to find the love of his life relaxing at home. No foreshadowing asserts anything special about the occasion or day. No fancy marketing to fleece customers of hard earned money. No gimmicks or convoluted infatuations promising a happily ever after proportional to carat size. It is just a man coming home after a long day at work. What he finds there is the greatest attainment any man could dream to possess, and hopefully retain – a wife whose presence fills him with joy. The Prophet Muḥammad, sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam, said: “The world and all things in the world are precious but

Both the US and Pakistani governments are likely to keep detailed records. A recent case at the Peshawar High Court heard that officials in the tribal agencies had prepared a confidential report which ‘included details of each and every drone attack and the number, names and ages of the people killed’.
ID cards, family photographs and eyewitness testimony of attacks can all provide useful corroborating evidence. The graves of militants killed in drone strikes can also name them as ‘martyrs’ and give details of the strikes in which they died.
Anonymous US intelligence officials have also revealed details of CIA video surveillance on particular strikes. And the ‘Terror Tuesday’ process – in which hundreds of named alleged militants have been selected by US agencies for targeted killing – has been widely reported. Photographs and other documents also occasionally surface. When a civilian family was killed in the first drone strike

the most precious thing in the world is a virtuous woman.” Virtuous, not, exclusively, in terms of the length of prostration or in devotion to religious obligations but rather as he, sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam, once informed 'Umar: “Shall I not inform you about the best treasure a man can hoard? It is a virtuous wife who fills him with joy whenever he looks towards her.” It is not love at first sight, rather exponential love with every glance. Ya Allāh, put love between our spouse and us and allow us comfort and mercy in our home. Ya Allāh, spread love and peace throughout the Ummah of Muhammed sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam O Allāh grant us Your Divine Love O Allāh grant us the love of those who Love You O Allāh grant us the love of doing the things that earn Your Divine Love
UK will seek to build up biographical information for all of those killed, whether civilian or militant – their name, age, gender, tribe, and village, for example. Where possible, photographs, witness statements and official documentation will also be published. The team will seek assistance from the Pakistan and US governments in identifying those killed. And researchers will also call on Taliban factions and other militant groups to release information on the many hundreds of fighters killed in more than 360 US drone strikes since 2004. Our ultimate goal is to please Allah (SWTA); therefore, we will discuss best practices, according to Qur’an and Sunnah, to achieve our goal. Dates: Friday, March 29th through Sunday, March 31st. Our first session will be Friday evening along with our Meet and Greet, Insha’Allah. Our weekend will continue with day and evening activities on Saturday and a half day on Sunday. With the exception of Friday prayer, all events are for women only (no children except nursing babies). This year our maximum adult registration is 630 participants, which includes both online and mail-in registration. We will be hosting our young sisters concurrently with the Women's Committee program, separate sessions will be conducted (attendees must be ages 12-19). Youth program also includes four meals, entertainment and swimming. Registration Info: Rasheita Turner 301-915-4514; Vending Info: Zakia Amin 410-3409747; Ad Journal Application: Rehana b. >> continued from pg 25 added the drone alert feature — and it was rejected for the second time due to Google’s logo placed on the map. The third time, the application was rejected for being “objectionable and crude”. This week, Apple notified the app developer that the software represents “excessively crude” content, even though there is no graphic images or close-ups and no pornography — it showed nothing more than the pinpoint location of a drone
BASE
>> continued from pg 25 comment. The United States already has drones and surveillance aircraft stationed at several points around Africa. Its only permanent military base is in the small country of Djibouti in the Horn of Africa, more than 3,000 miles (5,000 km) from Mali. After her talks with Issoufou, Williams told reporters they had discussed eco-
strike on a map. “I wanted to have a more granular sense of what drone strikes really did look like out of genuine curiosity.” Begley told the New York Times. Apple spokesman Tom Neumayr confirmed that the app was removed for violating Apple policy, but refused to comment on what content was deemed ‘objectionable’. However, the puzzling aspect is this — why was the material available through The Guardian’s app — “nearly identinomic and military cooperation and development issues. She also expressed Washington's appreciation for the French-led military mission to expel an alliance of al Qaeda-linked fighters from northern Mali. French and Malian troops retook control of the ancient trading town of Timbuktu on Monday, as they drove deep into the heart of the desert region the size of Texas seized by Islamist fighters last year. Washington has provided military transport planes to airlift men and equipment
cal” as the New York Times reports — acceptable, whereas an individual’s app was not? Begley wanted the app to drive users into “drone-consciousness” — to show how military technology is being deployed across the East. He said: “I didn’t actually expect anyone to download the app. People don’t want to hear about drone strikes But that’s kind of the point. Even if we have access to the data, do we really care to be interrupted by it?”
into Mali but said it will not send combat troops. The head of the U.S. Africa Command, General Carter Ham, visited Niger last month. The poor, landlocked West Africa state has said it wants to have closer security cooperation with Washington. COOKING WITH SISTER HEATHER warming up with Mujaddara
By Heather Hagood When it gets cold outside, I am always on the lookout for easy dinner recipe that will warm the kids up from the inside out. Mujaddara is one of those recipes. It is simple, satisfying, and you can easily feed a family with only a handful of ingredients (most of which you probably already have sitting in your pantry). Plus, Mujaddara is the perfect meatless meal, because lentils are extremely affordable and a nutritional powerhouse. Did you know that lentils have nearly 16 grams of fiber, almost 18 grams of protein, and less than 1 gram of fat per cup. Just think, if you add an easy tossed salad with tomato, cucumber, feta black olives, and mixed greens; dinner is served. Mujaddara Prep time: 5 min. Total time: 45 min. Serves 4 1 c. brown basmati rice 1 c. lentils 2 t. cumin 1 t. garlic powder 3 large onions, diced 2 large onions, halved and sliced thin 2 T. olive oil, divided 1 T. butter About 4 c. broth (chicken or vegetable) Rinse the brown basmati rice and cook in chicken or vegetable ....
broth per package instructions. Measure 1 c. lentils and pick through them while they are dry to remove any sticks or small stones. Then place in a strainer and rinse. Cook the lentils per package instructions in 2 c. broth, 2 t. cumin, and 1 t. garlic powder. If you would like to use fresh or jar garlic, wait until the lentils are finished cooking and then stir in at the end. Begin to taste test the lentils every 5 minutes starting at 30 minutes until they are just soft. Heat 1 T. olive oil in a sautĂŠ pan on medium heat and cook diced onions until they are translucent. Remove the cooked onions from the pan and set aside. Add 1 T. olive oil and 1 T. butter to the same pan, increase the temperature to medium high and begin cooking the sliced onions, stirring continuously, until caramelized (they will begin to brown). Remove from heat. Drain any excess liquid from the rice and lentils. Stir lentils, diced onion and rice together until combined. Transfer to a serving plate and top with caramelized onions. Serve hot. You sometimes see this dish accompanied by a yogurt sauce. I like to use a couple of spoons of plain greek yogurt, but you may like a lemon garlic yogurt sauce on the side. If you go with the lemon garlic yogurt sauce, plan to make it ahead of time by combining 2 c. of plain greek yogurt, 2 t. garlic paste, and 2 t. lemon juice. Cover and refrigerate for about 3 hours to allow the garlic and lemon flavors to blend and mellow.
