Over Six Thousand Walk to 'Let History Decide' On April 24, 2015, a highly anticipated rally for TurkishArmenian reconciliation took place in Washington DC, with over 6,000 marchers calling for the US government and international community to resist pressure to label World War I conflict between the Ottoman Empire and Armenians living in its border region a "genocide". Turkey says history shows -- while there were thousands of deaths on boths sides -- the conflict was part of the larger tragedy of World War I and not a genocide. A massive rally took place on the same day in Los Angeles with organizers estimating 130,000 marchers including many Hollywood personalities. The Obama Administration has not labeled the conflict a "genocide". US Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md) co-sponsored a resolution calling the conflict a "genocide".

attempts to set reasonable standards for the caseload of the Office of the Public Defender.
Muslim Link Contributing Writer On Sunday afternoon April 19, 2015, a group of approximately 30 members of the Muslim community filled Conference Room 2 in the Oxon Hill Library to communicate with their elected officials from the State, County, and Board of Education. The Prince George’s County Muslim Council (PGCMC) teamed with the Southern Prince George’s Association for Mutual Improvement (SAMI) to cosponsor a community forum with State Senator Anthony Muse, State Delegate Kris Valderrama, County Council Chair Mel Franklin, and Board of Education Member Sonya Williams. After welcoming introductions by the leaders of both groups, the elected officials gave an overview of key issues taking place in the state legislature,
the county council, and the Board of Education. Senator Muse expressed appreciation for the invitation to the Forum, emphasizing his respect and admiration for the Muslim members of their community. He highlighted the accomplishments of the just concluded Maryland General Assembly, noting that Prince George’s County will receive
substantial amounts of State funding for education, healthcare and other capital projects. The State Senator spoke of key bills he was able to pass during the most recent session including SB 651- a bill that expunges criminal records for individuals previously convicted of a crime that is no longer a crime in the State of Maryland and SB 646 – a bill
State Delegate Valderrama discussed the relationship with the new Governor who as a Republican is a member of the opposition party compared to the state legislature which is majority Democratic. She spoke of the importance of bipartisanship for sake of Maryland. She also informed the audience about the opportunity to receive scholarships from their state representatives if they are attending Maryland colleges; public or private. Ms. Sonya Williams reiterated the work of the Board of Ed in promoting student achievement County-wide, while

Candidate: Fairfax School Board Should Reflect Student Body Diversity By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff Reporter Northern Virginia Muslim Omar Fateh is running for one of the three Fairfax County school board member-at-large seats. He announced his candidacy at the March 24, 2015 general membership meeting of the Fairfax County Democratic Committee. Born in Washington D.C to parents who immigrated from Somalia in the 1960s, Fateh was raised in Annadale Virginia where he attended public school from K-12. A graduate of Falls Church
High School, he graduated from George Mason University with a degree in Public Administration. Currently he is a campaign finance analyst for the Federal Election Commission and plans on completing his Masters in Public Administration in May. As the second youngest in a family of six siblings, Fateh is grateful for the
support of his family, his masjid and his community who came together to help a student like him. “This is a personal. I failed [a] standardized test and had to take it again,” he told the Muslim Link. He can connect with emotional devastation a student experiences upon failing. Students start thinking that maybe they are not smart and that increases the likelihood that they would not pursue a college degree, he says. Intimately aware of the strengths and weaknesses of the Fairfax County Public Schools system, he is cognizant of the opportunities given to him and also the gaps that need to be addressed. “I am grateful for the chance
that my community college gave a student like me, ” he said. Fateh said he was motivated to run for the school board by the lack of representation on the board for the underprivileged, minorities and those with special needs. As an academic adviser at Northern Virginia Community College’s Pathway program, Fateh said he noticed minority students were often placed in remedial classes and that many of the county’s African-American and Latino students

Opening a Library, Continuing a Legacy Ahmed Hussain Islamic Library Inaugurated in Maryland By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff Reporter
As a tribute in honor of the late Washington DC area activist and intellectual, Ahmed Hussain, a new Islamic library was opened to the public near his hometown in Hartford County, Maryland . Ahmed Hussain passed away at the age of 31 on February 8, 2006, of what doctors suspect was a sudden heart attack at his parent’s home in Bel Air, Maryland. The grand opening of the Ahmed Hussain Islamic Library was held on Saturday, April 11, 2015 at the Hartford County Education Society, Masjid Al-Falaah in Abingdon, Maryland, in the memory of his commitment to an Islamic renaissance through the revival of Islamic sciences. The community, interfaith visitors and friends and family of Ahmed Hussain attended the event. He was great collector of books says his mother Mubasher Hussain. She donated her son's collection of 5000 books to start the Ahmed Hussain Islamic Library. Friends and family hope that this library will be the gift that keeps on giving, a continued blessing for years to come for those on the path to seeking the divine just like their dear friend Ahmed always was. They remember his affectionate hugs and reassuring smiles, his warm words and witty demeanor, his spiritual insights and deep thoughts. Ahmed Hussain grew up in Baltimore and Bel Air and was very active in the DC and Northern Virginia Muslim communities. He graduated with a degree in religion and philosophy from George Washington University where he was the President of the Muslim Students Association and received his Master's Degree in Islamic Law from the Graduate School of Islamic and Social Sciences in Leesburg, Virginia.

Hussain represented ADAMS interfaith committee while carrying on a tradition his parents started when they were invited to a local church to talk about Islam to the kids in the church's Sunday class. “He was happy to accompany and to demonstrate to them how we pray, the meaning and concept of the prayer, the prayer rug, the prayer beads (tasbeeh), the [names] of Allah and how we celebrate our festivals. He answered the questions kids had about Islam,” shared his mother. One of his childhood friends was Jewish and according to Hussain’s mother, he was inspired by Ahmed to become a champion for Palestinian rights and is an activist with Jewish Voices of Peace. Hussain saw the need for a civil rights organization for Muslims and was one of CAIR's first volunteers. He helped write several of the Washington-based group's initial publications. A few years ago, Mona Malik and Mirza Baig hosted a fundraiser at their home in Virginia for the library. Equipped with Internet access and a table, the small library space is lined with bookshelves. A librarian from the community is cataloging the books and they will be available for check out for the general public. The majority of the books are in English with a few in Urdu and
Arabic. “The books cover a whole range of interdisciplinary fields within Islam. Everything from Islamic Law, civilization, history, traditions and saying of Prophets Muhammad, Jesus, Moses, Abraham, Noah, and Adam (peace be upon them) among many others, Bible studies from an Islamic Perspective, Philosophy, Islamic Epistemology, ethics, and other topics. There will be free copies of an English translation of the Holy Quran for all guests that come in,” said Dr Rehan Khan, the president of Masjid Falaah. The space also has a kitchen with a microwave and game room so visitors can relax between reading and studying. “We hope to have many intellectual, religious, and interfaith discussions in this small but cozy room. This is a room from which no seeker will go empty handed,” said the President of the center. His mothers shared anecdotes of Ahmed with the Muslim Link. His volunteer work with the Fallston General Hospital emergency room and the local nursing home in their area made him a favorite of the elderly. They looked forward to his visits as he charmed them with stories about the Middle East and India. A regular khateeb at the Jummah held at ADAMS in Tyson’s Corner, he infused his lectures with references
to the thousands of books he had read, inspiring his listeners to seek knowledge. "Who was Ahmed Hussain? A friendly, loving and beautiful person- he was like the moon and when he would walk into the room he would light it up! He was a maven with a photographic memory. He introduced people to love and the beauty of our religion and touched the lives of so many people. He is forever with us in our hearts. All of the good that he ever did is always felt, as is his presence. All of the books which are in the library today are donated from Ahmed's personal collection,” shared his friend, Pervaiz Bhatti. “Through their deaths we live,” Ahmed wrote in his commencement speech at Bel Air High School referring to the classmates who had passed away. “Spirituality is an essential nutrient when living a life to the fullest, without it death ensues.” Through Ahmed's death and the legacy of the library, Ahmed’s mother prays that his love of knowledge and books will live serving the spirit of the town for generations to come.
Ahmed Hussain Islamic Library is located at 3014 Philadelphia Rd, Abingdon, MD.

community of Muslim neighbors, their masjid and school occupying the same storefront space for four decades, a peaceful space two blocks from the ground zero of the riots which rivted the nation the last week of April. At 7: 15 am on the morning after the night of turmoil, Zakia Amin joined other citizens of Baltimore in sweeping away the debris at North and Pennsylvania; the small pieces of glass embedded in the sidewalk were too hard to dislodge. She had contacted the local Home Depot from the Islamic Community School at Masjid Saffat two blocks away where she serves as principal, to get cleaning supplies. A Home Depot truck dropped off $400 worth of donated brooms, dustpans, trash bags, gloves, hand sanitizer and water. “There were a number of Muslims there, but not enough, in my opinion,” she wrote to community members who inquired about the safety of the Masjid Saffat and what many call the longest running Islamic School in the country. Haki Shakur Ammi, best selling author of Mission Unstoppable- extraordinary stories of failures and blessings, gathered a group of men to guard what he calls the most precious place in Baltimore. Across the street from Masjid Saffat and to the left is Everyone’s Place—the historic African American bookstore on North Avenue. Ammi tells the Muslim Link that the masjid is a force to reckon with in the area— a force of goodness. People coming from outside don’t know what is important to protect, Ammi pleaded with members of the community. The bookstore is a treasure chest of African and African American history and the largest wholesaler of books on Africa in the world, according to Ammi. Across town, the Islamic Society of Baltimore on Johnnycake Road dismissed its school due to threats of violence and escalating destruction at the Security Mall. The area looked like a military zone as the Maryland National Guard and other police forces came into town. “Those are some big guns pointing down at us,” says Antoine.

People are angry says Haleema, a math teacher at Al Huda School who lives in Baltimore City, for the abuse by the police for the past 25 years. At least 2 local imams were in the streets on Monday night seeking peace. So maybe, just maybe, the recent actions in Baltimore have awakened us to our mission that was given to us by Allah" -- Sister Zakia Amin the effect that they are having on their own community,” says Haleema who is a mother of young adults. as instrumental in stopping the escalation of violence. “A team of 120 men marched through Baltimore to help bring calm to a night that shall be remembered forever,” he notes. The street engagement unit community walks on Friday night have run for the past two years through the most impacted communities in Baltimore and no one has ever gotten hurt. The faithful prayed for a just announcement
on the investigation into Freddie Gray’s death, otherwise feared more days of instability. With the rest of the city, Ammi was waiting for the prosecutor Mariam Mosby to speak to the public. He got his wish on when she made a powerful speech, commending the peaceful protestors and those who protected the city from those who chose to destroy it. The officers were charged and indicted and protesters celebrated the small victory. The unrest acutely highlighted the lack of awareness by immigrant Muslim communities from the plight and oppression that African Americans, onethird of the American Muslim population, suffer every day in the United States. ISNA issued a statement on the damage of property that was severely criticized by many Muslim leaders for being out of touch with the realities on the ground for the impoverished streets of Baltimore City. Does the Muslim community care more about shattered windows versus shattered spines? “People are angry and had enough of the killing of unarmed black men. May Allah protect us all,” reflected Caliph

that businesses that were haram and predatory such as liquor stores and pay check cashing joints were not worth mourning. Some Muslims business owners did suffer losses of legitimate businesses such as pharmacies, pizza stores and restaurants. On Monday afternoon, the day of Gray’s funeral, Darwin Antoine, a photojournalist from Baltimore and a single father, was dropping off equipment, driving down Pennsylvania Avenue the Mondawmin Mall area in Northwest Baltimore. He saw a lot of traffic, a lot of police as the kids were being let out of school. He told the Muslim Link that he witnessed police officers in full riot gear were getting on the busses and making passengers deboard. The funeral of Gray had ended hours earlier at a nearby church. “Can I call my mom because I don’t have a way to get home,” Antoine overheard a young man on the blockaded roads near the Frederick Douglass High School, which is across the street from the mall. Many students from other city schools were waiting to get on secondary buses
to their homes. Children from around the city use the stop as a transit hub, which is on the first covered mall in the United States of America. The bus and train system were suddenly halted because of a rumored “purge”- a call on social media for violence. They were corralled in with police marching towards them. Antoine witnessed the teens —many who were frightened—get tired of the brutal intimidation and pushed back. It took a minute for the stable situation to get chaotic. He can’t tell who threw the
first rock but soon the same police force that is meant to protect children was also attacking them with rocks. “Police were pushing them down Pennsylvania towards where a lot of protestors were congregated,” insists Antoine, who says that he heard them referring to the teens as animals and thugs as they tried herding them a few blocks down past shuttered businesses and abandoned homes. ICNA Hosts Area Leaders in Run-up to Convention Warmer weather usually signifies the beginning of Spring. The first bloom, however, also marks a countdown to one of the largest Muslim gatherings in the United States, the Islamic Circle of North America – Muslim American Society (ICNA-MAS) Convention. For the second consecutive year, the annual ICNA-MAS Convention will take place at the Baltimore Convention Center, in shaa Allah. The theme and goal this year is to revive the love of the Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) in the hearts of everyone by educating Americans on the message Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam brought to society. On Friday, April 17, 2015, ICNA hosted a dinner at Lal Qila restaurant in Baltimore where leaders from masajid and Islamic organizations across the state of Maryland were present. Representatives from the Islamic Society of Annapolis,
Islamic Society of Baltimore, Masjid Muminunn, Masjid Us Salaam, Muslimat Al Nissa, Dar al Taqwa, Mariyum Islamic Center, Dar-us-Salaam, the Islamic Community Center of Laurel and the Islamic Community Center of Potomac attended. The topic of the evening was the convention theme and ideas on promoting the convention to area Muslim communities. Shaykh Yaseen Shaikh, the Resident Scholar of the Islamic Society of Baltimore, opened the evening with beautiful recitation from the Qur'an recitation from Surah Asr. setting the tone for Dr. Mohsin Ansari, Chairman of ICNA Relief, to talk about the history of the ICNA Convention and it’s growth over the years from 2,500 attendees in its inaugural year to over 20,000 attendees last year. Dr. Maqbool Patel of the Islamic Society of Baltimore joined him in stressing the importance of marketing and mobilizing communities to attend the convention.

Much of the question and answer period focused on the proposed real estate tax increase to be imposed by the county to provide more funding for the schools. Councilman Franklin took an impromptu poll of those in attendance to see who was in favor of the tax increase and who was opposed. The poll was split approximately 50/50. The Councilman made it clear that, “in order to fund the schools we either have the tax increase, don’t increase funding for the schools or find some third way.” A board member of Masjid Al Hikmah (a subsidiary of SAMI) asked, “What does it take for the schools to recognize Eid ul Fitr and Eid ul Adha as public holidays?” Ms. Williams stated that she wasn’t certain if the Board of Education had the individual authority but noted that the first approach is to start a conversation.
The holidays are mentioned in the school calendar and the school system has accepted excused absences for Muslim students. Senator Muse stated that it might take enabling legislation from the state legislation for the county to move forward. When asked if he would sponsor such legislation he stated that he would. Ms. Williams stated that she would vote in favor of closing the schools if it came up for a vote. Although the County Council would have no authority in this matter,
Councilman Franklin pledged to provide public support for the Muslim holidays. New York City recently declared the Eid observances as a school holiday. DC Imam Was All About Bringing Muslims Together On April 30, 2015, I assisted with the janaza preparations and burial of a dear brother who I met in the late 80s where we worked together at a large Emerson St. house in DC that was later known as Masjidul-Islam. Various well known duat and scholars regularly came to assist and teach at the Masjid in those days. As a result, by the early 1990s a gradual transformation had taken place and the house had become one of the few local places where people were talking about following the Qur'aan and Sunnah and the way of the Pious Predecessors. A lot of history has occurred since then with the Muslims of Washington DC. By the mercy of Allah, a project is now underway to capture the chronology and make it accessible to the current and future generations who were not there. The brother himself was widely known and genuinely respected by many. He was very aware of many issues and problems yet never had a bad word to say about people even if they did him wrong. He was not perfect by any means, but he was steadfast and had courage and loved the deen of Islam and the youth of Islam, many of whom did not know how to properly respect their elders in the deen or maybe elders period. He however, was about trying to get the Muslims together. Last week I saw people at his janaza who I had not seen since they were ....

Hopefully, we can work together for their success.” Fateh will be knocking on the door of churches, synagogues and as many religious centers as possible. At a leadership meeting at Dar al Hijrah in Falls Church, he discussed his goals and and campaign platform. He plans
goals for the year. Brother Naeem stressed that now, more than ever, addressing the community at large regarding the true message of Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam) is critical. This blessed gathering of scholars and individuals dedicating their lives to taking care of and preserving Islam in their communities was a momentous start to
on focusing on expanding community engagement, addressing the needs of a full range of students and managing growth in the county while working within the constraints of the budget. “This is an expensive race and I will need the support of the entire community to spread my message,” he said. The endorsements will be released on May 26, 2015 and the election is on November 3rd 2015. children and others who I thought had indeed long passed! There were many who the last time we saw or spoke to each other, we both had hair and no grey. Indeed, in his passing, Allah used the janaza to bring us all together. Of the hundreds who tightly crammed for his janaza, many could have died that day had there been a panic or fire! There would have been little hope for us all that day to escape such a scenario. Isn't that a thought? How many of us reflected on that and that we all could soon be where our brother was that day? How many of us reflected on all the time that has passed and all those who have gone on before us? There are many more lessons I learned from that day and the entire experience, and it was the first time I had been involved in such janaza preparations from nearly start to finish. I saw the brother go from alert and happy to see me in a hospital bed to weakness and finality at a hospice facility. His family endured stress, sadness and emotions as well as demands placed upon them and may Allah reward them. May Allah forgive the brother and pardon his errors and shortcomings and enter him into AlJannah, ameen. He was named Abdul-Mubdee Shakir. American Sniper Movie Sparks Debate at UMCP, Panel Discussion By Hena Zuberi Muslim Link Staff Reporter Signs by campus groups who came out in support of the Muslim students read, “There is no room for hate on this campus.” On May 4, 2015, the Hoff Theatre held the screening of the blockbuster film American Sniper, sponsored by the University of Maryland College Republicans. “I commend the Muslim Student Association and their partner organizations on how they conducted themselves during the panel discussion,” said Dawud Walid, the Executive Director of CAIRMichigan, a civil rights activist and a veteran who was the guest of the MSA on the panel discussion that followed the screening.

Members of the Muslim Students Association, Students for Justice for Palestine, Asian American Student Association and others handed out flower stems with cards to the 275 viewers that came to watch the movie. They were protesting the screening of a movie they say promotes hate and threatens the building of an ‘inclusive, just, and safe campus community’. One side of the card quoted from the hundreds of hate-filled comments that had peppered the UMDMSA’s Facebook page ever since they had voiced their concerns to the Student Entertainment Events (SEE), a group that organizes events for students on campus on their announcement of the screening of American Sniper. The MSA had voiced their fears in two

and donors followed. Then the President of the University issued a statement. The College Republicans would screen the movie the same week, albeit with a panel discussion. The other side of the cards with the flowers handed out by the MSA students Monday night outside Hoff had a real response from a member of the MSA to the hate messages. The ones Shani Banks handed out read, “Hi, my name is Shani, I was born in California.” A clear reply to the many “go back home” messages the group had received. Banks has been instrumental in her role in raising awareness about this issue. Concerned for safety of the Muslims students of campus, Banks approached the board of the Muslim Student Association about the screening of the American Sniper-the controversial movie that some call war propaganda and others critically acclaim, on the University of Maryland campus. Banks and the rest of the leadership of the MSA agreed that the depiction of Arabs and Muslims in the movie could create a climate that would endanger the safety of Muslims and other students of Arab and Asian backgrounds. Banks, a psychology major graduating this May, is the vice president of the MSA. She had received reports of harassment from young Muslim women on campus. One had been told that all Muslims deserve to die after the Chapel Hill shooting and another had been called a terrorist in a filled quad on campus. Last year, a young woman was interrogated by campus police for praying in the hallway of the Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Building. Banks, the Muslim Chaplain Tarif Shraim and the President of the MSA, Omar Khan had read hate-ridden tweets online after the release of American Sniper and felt it was their duty to voice concerns. She wrote a letter to SEE and urged other concerned to do the same. A petition was started after talks with SEE came to a standstill. "This war propaganda guised as art reveals a not-sodiscreet Islamophobic, violent, and racist nationalist ideology. A simple Google search will give you hundreds of articles that delve into how this film has fueled anti-Arab and anti-Islamic sentiments; its
visceral 'us verses them' narrative helps to proliferate the marginalization of multiple groups and communities — many of which exist here at UMD," read part of the petition on Change.org. "This movie dehumanizes Muslim individuals, promotes the idea of senseless mass murder, and portrays negative and inaccurate stereotypes," it added. "Hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians suffered greatly in the Iraq war; innocent people were deposed from their homes, traumatized by war, and lost their
spouse, parents, and children. This movie serves to do nothing but make a mockery out of such immense pain." “We got a lot of backlash,” says Banks. This backlash, including personal death threats, bolstered the Muslim Student Association’s initial concerns of student safety. Khan and Banks say that the campus administration and campus police were very proactive and supportive of the MSA’s safety concerns. They offered extra security outside the MSA musallah
and for Banks. According to panelists, it was a difficult film to watch. Every depiction of an Arab except for one was negative, says Walid. The movie also depicts that difficulty veterans face upon returning home and the crippling effects of posttraumatic stress disorder. Walid found the composition of the actual

Running for the Hills
Down in the Dirt By Jann McClary
Muslim Link Contributing Writer In May of 2011, Sister Jann McClary and her husband Tariq moved from the Washington DC metropolitan area to establish a new home in the mountains of Colorado, building it from the ground up as part of their plan to become free of the spiritual and physical stress of modern urban life. Sister Jann is documenting her experiences for the Muslim Link. See her earlier installments at www. muslimlinkpaper.com by searching for 'Running for the Hills'. Make sure you select 'Exact Phrase' in the search options. –TML Ever heard the term “black gold”? If you're like me, who spent parts of my childhood (pre-shahada) watching “The Beverly Hillbillies” on TV, you're probably thinking it's crude, Texas tea, oil, that is. Black gold, as prized by homesteaders does come out of the ground, but then goes back into the ground, where it's more valuable the second time around. It's one of the best things a gardener can put into her garden. Black gold is compost. Allaah subhana wa t'ala, tells us that He is Al Qayyum, the One who sustains everything. Everything has to be nurtured to sustain life, even soil, depending on what you're trying to grow, and compost boosts the soil by adding water, air and the nutrients that all the lovely little soil organisms love to eat. They, in turn, break the nutrients down further so they become available for your plants' roots to absorb. Your veggies and flowers will only be as good as the soil they're grown in, so kick it up a notch naturally. Now, you can go out and buy a bag of compost from your favorite DIY big box store, but it'll be mostly “forest byproducts”, which is pretty much finely shredded and composted bark, leaves and
....
some sphagnum peat moss. The bark and leaves are not a problem, but sphagnum peat moss, despite its dogged use by gardeners, isn't as “green” as you'd think. It's renewable alright, but it is mined from bogs and takes hundreds to thousands of years to renew itself. Plus, if you buy this bag of pre-made compost you'll have to enrich it with a bag of fertilizer, and then you end up having spent more money than you intended, and then you'll have gone over budget and can't buy that cool little whatchamacallit you were gonna get to make your gardening easier. All the stuff you eat is eligible for the compost pile, with the exception of meats, oils and dairy products. It's best not to use them because their oils clog the air spaces in the pile, which makes it break down slower. That makes it smell, and then rodents come in, thinking you've invited them to a buffet, which means you'll have to get a cat to go after all these rodents, and of course, cats need toys and shots and cat beds and collars, so now your budget's completely out the window. You know this could all be prevented...just make your own compost. A reasonable balance of dry, carbontype stuff, like newspaper, dead leaves, cardboard, paper bags; nitrogen-type stuff, like vegetable and plant waste, coffee grounds, grass clippings, egg shells: and just enough water to make the above mixture damp-to-moist, not wet, and you've got the basics of good compost. We could get into formulas for determining the best carbon-to-nitrogen ratios, and cubic foot measurements for precise decomposition rates, but homesteaders rarely have need of calculus (yea!), and besides, I have limited space for this column. Suffice it to say, composting doesn't have to be an exact science, and it's pretty hard to mess up a compost pile. Leave any formerly-living stuff alone long enough and it'll compost
Top: The author's compost pile gets some left over veggies, and (Bottom) rots and decays after some days. (Photos courtesy of the author) itself. Even us. Allaah subhana wa t'ala tells us in surat-ul Ra'ad “...when we are dust shall we indeed then be (raised) in a new creation?...”, and in Surat-ul Kahf “...do you disbelieve in Him who created you from dust?...” Eventually even we will enrich the earth. If you borrow something from someone, or are given a gift, it's good adaab to return the thing in a better condition than you received it, or to give the one who gave you a gift something nicer in return. In Sahih al-Bukhari 'Aisha (radiallahu anha) narrated: “Allah's Messenger (sallallahu alaihi wa salam) used to accept gifts
and used to give something in return.” Hasn't Allaah 'azza wa jal given us the good earth and the food that comes out of it as a gift? Well then, maybe we just ought to improve its condition as a show of thankfulness, and so that we can get something better out of it. Composting is a good example of “what goes around, comes around”; you put in good and you get back good, or better. So why not mix up your own soil-building compost that you have control over, and is renewable? It's as easy as taking out the garbage. Read more of "Running for the Hills" at muslimlinkpaper.com

Avoiding the Sting: U.S. Organization Proposes Different Approach to “Radicalization” BY MURTAZA HUSSAIN
The Intercept, May 1, 2015
Last March, John T. Booker, a 20-yearold from Kansas, checked himself into a mental health facility for evaluation. Now, a year later, he faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison, charged with attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction — the fake bomb that he was provided by undercover FBI informants. Booker was arrested earlier this month in an alleged plot to attack a Kansas military base. Booker, who had reportedly been diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, had publicly expressed violent and extremist views for roughly a year before FBI agents induced him to commit a criminal act that would land him behind bars. In the United States today, individuals who make statements that could be construed as advocating violent extremism — even those who have mental health issues — often become the targets of law enforcement officials whose priority is putting people in prison, not helping

community. “The program was inspired by the case of Mohamed Mohamud, the purported Portland bomber,” said Alejandro Beutel, who helps run the program. “He was a 19-year-old kid
who came from a broken home, had substance abuse and mental health issues. He started saying some things which alarmed his father, who then called the FBI.” “But the FBI didn’t ‘help’ Mohamud,” Beutel said. “They introduced him to an informant who aggressively pushed him even further in a negative direction, ensuring that he would spend the next several decades of his life behind bars. If his father had gone to the community, and if they had the tools and confidence to deal with troubled youth like this, Mohamud might not have had his life destroyed as it was.” It’s a pattern that has been repeated hundreds of times over the past decade: the FBI “foils” a terror plot, except the would-be terrorist’s only conspiracy is with government informants.
“ T h e r e ’s a p e r c e p t i o n a m o n g counterterrorism agents that they need to be producing something — they’re under pressure from above, and they start to feel like they’re better safe than sorry by locking troubled people up if there’s no other real option out there,” said Mubin Shaikh, who worked as an undercover agent for the Canadian Security Intelligence Services in several terrorism cases, and is now pursuing a Ph.D. in the psychology of radicalization. “Part of the reason that 14 years after 9/11 we don’t have a handle on this problem is that we continue to focus almost exclusively on things like ideology and religion, instead of grappling with more complex questions about community engagement, mental health, and how aggressive foreign policies inevitably generate terrorism,” Shaikh told The Intercept. One of the major aims of Safe Spaces is to help communities understand their legal rights and ability to discuss politically sensitive issues without fear of government retribution. In the post-9/11 era, an endemic problem within Western Muslim communities has been the paranoia and suspicion generated by informants and other forms of surveillance, which have made people hesitant to engage with individuals perceived to exhibit antisocial behaviors. “People are so scared of the possibility of the FBI breathing down their neck, they just kick anyone expressing troubling views out of the mosque,” said Beutel. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who would eventually plant bombs at the Boston Marathon, was ejected from his local Boston mosque the year before the attack for making

Israeli Veterans Say Permissive Rules of Engagement Fueled Gaza Carnage By William Booth
A first sergeant serving in the Mechanized Infantry in Gaza told the group, “If we don’t see someone waving a white flag, screaming, ‘I give up’ or something — then he’s a threat and there’s authorization to open fire.”
The Washington Post, May 4, 2015 TEL AVIV — The war last summer between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip left more than 2,100 Palestinians dead and reduced vast areas to rubble. On Monday, a group of Israeli veterans released sobering testimony from fellow soldiers that suggests permissive rules of engagement coupled with indiscriminate artillery fire contributed to the mass destruction and high numbers of civilian casualties in the coastal enclave. The organization of active and reserve duty soldiers, called Breaking the Silence, gathered testimonies from more than 60 enlisted men and officers who served in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge. The soldiers described reducing Gaza neighborhoods to sand, firing artillery at random houses to avenge fallen comrades, shooting at innocent civilians because they were bored and watching armed drones attack a pair of women
The testimonies in the report are anonymous and impossible to independently verify. The Israeli Defense Forces declined to address details in the report and said that Breaking the Silence “does not provide IDF with any proof of their claims.”
talking on cellphones because they were assumed to be Hamas scouts. The director of the group, Yuli Novak, called the rules of engagement in the offensive “the most permissive” it has seen and amounted to an “ethical failure ... from the top of the chain of command.” Novak called for an independent investigation. The 240-page report, “This is How We Fought in Gaza 2014”, was released
Monday and accompanied by videotaped testimony that aired on Israeli news programs. The soldiers said they were told by commanders to view all Palestinians in the combat zones as a potential threat, whether they brandished weapons or not. Individuals spotted in windows and rooftops — especially if they were speaking on cellphones — were often considered scouts and could be shot.
“This pattern of collecting evidence over an extended period of time and refusing to share it with the IDF in a manner which would allow a proper response, and if required, investigation, indicates that contrary to their claims this organization does not act with the intention of correcting any wrongdoings they allegedly uncovered,” the Israeli military stated.

China Orders Muslim Shopkeepers to Sell Alcohol, Cigarettes, to ‘Weaken’ Islam By Simon Denyer
The Washington Post, May 5, 2015 Chinese authorities have ordered Muslim shopkeepers and restaurant owners in a village in its troubled Xinjiang region to sell alcohol and cigarettes, and promote them in “eye-catching displays,” in an attempt to undermine Islam’s hold on local residents, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported. Establishments that failed to comply were threatened with closure and their owners with prosecution. Facing widespread discontent over its repressive rule in the mainly Muslim
province of Xinjiang, and mounting violence in the past two years, China has launched a series of “strike hard” campaigns to weaken the hold of Islam in the western region. Government employees and children have been barred from attending mosques or observing the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. In many places, women have been barred from wearing facecovering veils, and men discouraged from growing long beards.

“Our goal is to treat Muslim communities like any other communities, not as something unique. We treat this as a public health program, not so-called ‘countering extremism’ in a way which stigmatizes an entire group within society,” said Beutel. A 2014 Human Rights Watch report found that the FBI now maintains a network of 15,000 confidential informants throughout the country, the greatest number at any time in its history. As FBI Director James Comey recently commented, the agency has “investigations of people in various states of radicalizing in all 50 states.” Harsh police tactics like mass surveillance and entrapment — widely viewed as discriminatory toward the most vulnerable members of the Muslim community — may also have the counterproductive effect of alienating Muslim minorities domestically. “Not all sting operations are created equal. Some can be employed in legitimate investigations,” said Faiza Patel, co-director of the Brennan Center’s Liberty and National Security Program. “But those cases which involve mentally ill people — or people who would have otherwise been unable to mount an attack on their own — create a sense in the community that they are being unfairly targeted.” While criticizing these tactics, Patel is also cautious of “soft” intervention programs, which often come under the banner of “countering violent extremism.” “I am most troubled by programs that seek to identify at-risk individuals, particularly when schools are involved,” Patel said. “The risks of making mistakes are very high given that there is no consensus as to the indicators of someone who is going to become a terrorist.” Approaches taken in Europe have had mixed results in dealing this issue. A program in Denmark has achieved positive results by seeking to rehabilitate returned foreign fighters and other individuals perceived to have been radicalized. individuals at risk of radicalization and recommend either law enforcement intervention or the help of social services — have been more controversial, generating charges of McCarthyism from local Muslim communities. Safe Spaces takes a different approach. “We need to provide guidance to communities about how to deal with law enforcement,” Beutel said. “The FBI are not our friends, but we are taxpayers, so to some degree we are their bosses. They have to be responsive to us.” Shaikh, the former undercover agent, said he is in favor of sting operations in certain cases, but critical
of the singularly punitive approach authorities generally take when dealing with individuals, particularly young people, who are suspected of being radicalized. “Heavy-handed tactics don’t work,” he said. “The fact is that for many people, there needs to be a third option between locking them up in jail and just doing nothing if they might be a danger to themselves or others.” Email the author: murtaza.hussain@theintercept. com

In the village of Aktash in southern Xinjiang, Communist Party official Adil Sulayman, told RFA that many local shopkeepers had stopped selling alcohol and cigarettes from 2012 “because they fear public scorn,” while many locals had decided to abstain from drinking and smoking. Sulayman said authorities in Xinjiang viewed ethnic Uighurs who did not smoke as adhering to “a form of religious extremism.” They issued the order to counter growing religious sentiment that was “affecting stability,” he said.

“We have a campaign to weaken religion here, and this is part of that campaign,” he told the Washington-based news service. The notice, obtained by RFA and posted on Twitter, ordered all restaurants and supermarkets in Aktash to sell five different brands of alcohol and cigarettes and display them prominently. “Anybody who neglects this notice and fails to act will see their shops sealed off, their businesses suspended, and legal action pursued against them,” the notice said. Radio Free Asia, which provides some of the only coverage of events in Xinjiang to escape strict Chinese government controls, said Hotan prefecture, where Aktash is located, had become “a hotbed of violent stabbing and shooting incidents between ethnic Uighurs and Chinese security forces.”
China says Uighur militant groups based abroad are using the Internet to inspire local Muslims to take up violent jihad against the state. Critics say China’s long repression of Uighur rights and nationalist sentiment has pushed people toward Islam as the only permitted assertion of their community’s identity, and pushed a minority toward a violent form of Islam. Clumsy attempts to promote alcohol or forbid beards and veils may prove counterproductive, they warn. James Leibold, an expert on China's ethnic policies at Melbourne's La Trobe University, said Chinese officials were "often flailing around in the dark" when tackling extremism. An acute lack of understanding leads them to focus on visible, but imprecise, perceptions of radicalism such as long beards, veils and sobriety, he said.
The result is often "crude forms of ethnocultural profiling," Leibold said. "These sorts of mechanistic and reactive policies only serve to inflame ethnonational tension without addressing the root causes of religious extremism, while further alienating the mainstream Uighur community, making them feel increasingly unwelcome within a hostile, Han-dominated society," he wrote in an e-mail. Sulayman said around 60 shops and restaurants in the area had complied with the government order, and there were no reports of protests. But in an unrelated incident in neighboring Qinghai province on Friday, an angry crowd of Muslims smashed windows of a supposedly halal store in Xining city, after pork sausages and ham were found in a delivery van, according to the local government and photographs on social media.

Members of Breaking the Silence are viewed by many Israelis as “anti-military.” The group says its mission is to tell the Israeli public what the IDF hides and what serving in the occupied West Bank and in wars in Gaza and Lebanon is really like. After graduating from high school, all Israeli men and women — except those who get deferments because of religious study or for medical reasons — must serve in the military. The Israelis charge that Palestinian militants brought most of the damage and casualties last summer on themselves and other Gazans by firing thousands of unguided rockets at Israeli cities, employing human shields and hiding weapons in schools, hospitals, mosques and other public buildings.

A first sergeant in an infantry unit in northern Gaza recalled that armored combat bulldozers “didn’t rest for a second. Nonstop, as if they were playing in a sandbox. Driving back and forth, back and forth, razing another house, another street. And at some point there was no trace left of that street.” The testimonies are spoken in the voices of soldiers — filled with military jargon and occasional expletives — about how they did their jobs, what they saw and sometimes what they felt. The Israeli combatants reveal acts of both kindness and savagery — sheltering a family from harm, for example, but also executing a wounded Palestinian.
bored and wanted to prove how good their aim was. “I am ashamed of this,” said the 21-yearold, who served in a Hamas hotspot near the town of Al Bureij in central Gaza. The gunner said he fired his Browning machine gun at a man pedaling a bicycle, but missed because of the distance. “War crime is a big word,” he said in an interview at a Tel Aviv apartment on Sunday. “I didn’t rape and kill anybody, but yeah, I shot at random civilian targets sometimes, just for fun, so yeah.” The same soldier said a friend in his unit was killed by shrapnel to the neck from a Palestinian mortar round and described how a burst of small-arms fire once breezed by his own head. In other testimonies, soldiers recalled that doors, houses and even sheep were booby-trapped with explosives and that once an old man was sent toward troops as a suicide bomber.
The report alleges that the IDF reduced whole neighborhoods of denselypopulated Gaza to ruins without any clear operational justification but instead to “demonstrate presence in the area.” More than 18,000 homes were severely

But he said the military had contributed to needless death and destruction with “a guiding military principle of minimum risk to our forces, even at the cost of harming innocent civilians.” When the ground offensive began and Israeli armored battalions entered Gaza, the IDF would first drop leaflets warning civilians to flee; then they would launch artillery and aerial strikes to destroy buildings that intelligence suggested could harbor militants and weapons, and “soften targets” to deter Hamas from counter-attack. A first sergeant deployed in northern Gaza testified, “They told us: ‘There aren’t supposed to be any civilians there. If you spot someone, shoot. Whether it posed a threat or not wasn’t a question, and that makes sense to me.” Ruth Eglash contributed to this report. William Booth is The Post’s Jerusalem bureau chief. parents, teachers and students collaborated the same story on social media. “Young men are profiled, stooped, arrested where they are living,” says Antoine, who lives in Baltimore County at the border of the City on Liberty Road and he believes this was a drill by the police department to test crowd control tactics. Around 3:30, the police reported that juveniles had begun to throw bottles and bricks. Then the police department noted that one of its officers had been injured. After that the violence escalated, and rioters started looting the Mondawmin Mall, and Baltimore was in for a long night of trouble. Relationship between police and the residents is tense. There is a list of men killed from the Baltimore City community that have not received justice. At least 109 people have died after encounters with police in Maryland between 2010 and 2014. Nearly 70 percent of them were African American. The police department of Baltimore has paid $6 million in fines for brutality. “These kids are already criminalized. Watching their friends and family getting attacked by police is an everyday vision for a lot of these kids.” “Police should do some community service in the neighborhoods to really build relationships with community people,” suggests Antoine. Ammi believes that police should be hired from within the neighborhoods that they live in so they are invested in their communities. “If you have no regard for the people you are supposed to protect and serve or see them as something to value, you will not have empathy for them.” We need to give them opportunities, get rid of the abandoned homes—whole blocks are in blight— get rid lead painted homes, and the slumlords. “What do we do to make this better because our people are not taking it any more,” asks Imam Hassan. “People do not trust the police,” says Imam Hassan. A Muslim brother from the Department of Justice stops to pray at the masjid and a 60-year-old brother says, “I don’t want to talk to him; I am traumatized by the police because my experience was so negative.”
Imam Hassan Amin is the chaplain at John Hopkins University; he moved to the Baltimore community from Philadelphia in the eighties. In March of 2015, he joined Baltimore Police department as a chaplain of the 9th district. Going through a month long training, he is the only Muslim imam that graduated from the BCPD Chaplaincy program. He trained to ride along with police officers and talk to them about their problems- donating about 20 hours a week. “Our presence may bring a spiritual calm to the sour relationship, bring some peace between citizens and the police,” he shares. The program was officially set to go into effect this summer but is now needed more than ever. Imam Hassan says that many of the police officers have never had contact with an urban African American population. Some in his district are from York, PA and other rural and suburban areas. All they have ever known about the Baltimore City is from rap music, or TV shows like the Wire or Homicide. They don’t know how to interact with the community. “These negative stereotypes are reflected in their attitude as they treat the community in a negative way. Not all officers are bad. There are good and bad citizens and good and bad officers,” says Imam Amin, “there are more good, decent officers but the bad ones are highlighted. The commissioner has to weed out the bad ones, he says, as they do not follow lot of official procedures and come to work just for the paycheck.“ As the Muslim Link was interviewing him on better police training, a gun was discharged at the corner of North and Pennsylvania and people had started gathering back up. The police say the man own weapon discharged, but few will believe it. “We can have a beautiful relationship between citizens and police but not if we don’t address the trauma and rebuild the trust,” he says. Imam Mikaeel Smith of Islamic Society of Annapolis and Imam Yasin Sheikh of ISB attended a rally and the meeting of local clergy and reflected on the crisis. “In a rally that I attended the day after the riots, Baltimore residents gathered both young and old along with over 100 clergy of different faiths to discuss or vent their frustration. A common message voiced many times over, was the extremely poor standard of education in the public schools of Baltimore,” shared Smith. Imam Yasin in a message to his congregation urged them to show concern for fellow
citizens and not ignore the protestors’ call for justice just because they live in safe neighborhoods and don’t experience injustice on a daily basis. “Make dua for the resident of the city at Jummah, at home after every salah. Make intention that I am going to make dua for Muslims and non-Muslims because without prayers there is no hope. Allah says ask from me. Not anyone else,” requested Imam Hassan Amin. “We have people on the ground trying to provide services to the vulnerable people of Baltimore City and Muslims can support these services. Do this continuously. This pain and suffering will continue after the news cameras are gone,” he said. These 400 senior citizens can’t shop for their medicine and groceries so we have been providing them with essential items. “One lady says I am down to my last cracker,” he said “We okay because the Muslims came to help us; they came to help us first without fanfare,” she let the local councilman know. “They smile at us with or without teeth because we give them respect and dignity. They can feel the love that we have from them,” says Imam Amin. “The status of elder African American Muslims in our Muslim American communities should be like that of the Companions of Badr’s status to the other companions. They deserve a degree of respect simply due to the struggles they made. Struggles that have been made by indigenous Muslims made it easier for our immigrant Muslim,” wrote Imam Smith. On Sunday May 3, 2015, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake lifted a citywide curfew, the Maryland National Guard began withdrawing its forces and shoppers returned to Mondawmin Mall. Zakia Amin’s powerful words struck the larger Baltimore community,” Some of the leadership of the Muslims in this area are being productive, calling people to Islam and showing and teaching people what Islam is all about. At least 2 local imams were in the streets on Monday night seeking peace. So maybe, just maybe, the recent actions in Baltimore have awakened us to our mission that was given to us by Allah. We have to establish Islam in the land, or at least give it our best effort. That means we have to come out of the comfort of the masajid.”
