Spike In 'Flying While Muslim' Incidents By Hena Zuberi

Within the past six months alone, eleven racial and religious profiling incidents have been reported, including five since April 1, 2016, according to Muslim Advocates, a national legal advocacy and educational organization.

While a majority of Muslim passengers fly without incidents, there is noticeable spike in instances of profiling. From switching seats to doing math equations, to saying in sha Allah, to looking at the cabin crew, Muslims or people who look Arab have been deplaned.

Baltimore Muslims Host Day of “Giving and Prayers” By Muslim Link Staff Did you buy groceries today? Did you have enough for fruits and vegetables? Do you buy them often enough to know the names of the vegetables you bought? As children played in the bounce house, stalls were set up with cooked food by the Muslim Social Services Agency, next to Masjid Al Haqq in Baltimore City for the Muslim Day of Giving and Dua. This was a vision of Imam Hassan Amin. “We have to start building bridges and closing the gaps between American Muslims and our fellow non-Muslim Americans. The May 14, 2016 Muslim National Day of Giving and Du’a event may be what America needs in order to help foster respect, peace and better understanding between Muslims and nonMuslims, stated Imam Hassan A. Amin. ICNA Relief volunteers handed out backpack for school children and canned goods. While Why Islam?, a dawah organization, handed out dawah literature on Islam.

Karim Amin ushered passerbys to the event, welcoming them to the help themselves. Across the street, Zakat Foundation of America had a fresh fruits and vegetable stall. Squash, lettuce, zucchini, sweet potatoes and parsnips in boxes were set out for neighbors of Masjid ul Haqq to carry home. "Vegetables are so expensive, I can't afford to buy them," said a neighbors as she filled her bag. She usually shops at the local Save-a-Lot, a few blocks down but fresh vegetables are out of her budget. "I have never seen such a variety of vegetables,”said another as they looked into some of the boxes of exotic

vegetables that the vendor has sent in the shipment—cilantro, Thai Okra, Chinese eggplants, yellow wax beans.” "Isn't it sad that I don't even know what this vegetable is called? Many asked the volunteers for recipes for the healthy ways to cooks the vegetables. As the adhan was called from the masjid, a Muslim police officer made dua and Imam Hassan Amin translated the adhan for all those who attended. “Recently, I had a sister come to MSSA needing a job, help with around $9,000.00 in medical bills, needed help with eviction prevention, food and other expenses. MSSA was able to assist her with some

of her immediate needs, but we had to refer her to other (non Muslims) agencies that could afford to assist her with her long term and ongoing needs. We thank Allah for the existence and aid that these agencies can afford to provide to all in need. But, it so pained me as a Muslim and Imam that I had to refer her outside of the Muslim community, for the basic help that she needed, inshaAllah.” relates Imam Amin. Howard County Muslims Award First “Lady Khadijah” Entrepreneur Scholarship to HCC Student By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter “Talk about the proverbial glass ceiling. Lady Khadijah didn’t just break it, she shattered that ceiling 1400 years ago,” stated Shahan Rizvi, the President of the Howard Muslim Council (HMC). The Council announced the Lady Khadijah Scholarship Fund for future entrepreneurs coming out of Howard Community College last year and awarded the 2016 scholarship winners in a ceremony on May 3, 2016.

A successful merchant and a charitable woman who fed and clothed the poor, Lady Khadijah assisted her relatives financially and employed many people to conduct trade on her behalf. Howard County Muslim Council raised $3000 for the recipients of the first

and second scholarship for 2016. “The Muslim community of Howard County

came together and our biggest donors included Ali Goraya, Rizwan Siddiqi, a major donor who remains anonymous, and several others,” Rizvi told the Muslim Link. The council also created the scholarship to tackle some common misconceptions. “There is a general misconception by some non-Muslims that Muslim women are oppressed and hidden in the

NOVA Interfaith Group Wins 2016 Governor's Service Award By Hena Zuberi

on the well deserved award.

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Clergy leaders representing faith communities, including Muslims, in four Northern Virginia jurisdictions traveled to Richmond April 18 to accept a 2016 Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Award to V.O.I.C.E. (Virginians Organized for Interfaith Community Engagement) for its work in training citizens to press for change on affordable housing, health care, immigration, and other critical issues for Northern Virginia’s low- and moderate-income communities. “V.O.I.C.E builds political power through organizing. Dar al-Hijrah is an active member, and we see this as one of the most important social justice models in the DMV. By organizing people and money, we hold politicians' feet to the fire, and things get done,” commented Colin Christopher, the Governmental Affairs Director at DAH. Dar al Hijrah congratulated the entire V.O.I.C.E. family

Rev. Dr. Keith Savage of the First Baptist Church of Manassas, Rev. Dr. Linda Olson Peebles of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, Rev. Clyde Ellis of the Mount Olive Baptist Church of Woodbridge, and Rev. Ellis T. (Tuck) Bowerfind of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Fairfax County accepted the award on behalf of V.O.I.C.E. The 2016 Governor’s Awards, organized by the Office on Volunteerism and Community Services in partnership with the Governor’s Advisory Board on Service and Volunteerism and the Virginia Service Foundation, were presented at a ceremony held at the Virginia Executive Mansion. They highlight the outstanding efforts that individual and organization volunteers make on behalf of residents. “I am proud and honored to celebrate Virginia’s outstanding volunteers who have made such enormous

contributions to those in need throughout the Commonwealth,” said Governor Terry McAuliffe. “These individuals, organizations and companies set an example for us all to give back to our communities and embody the spirit of service which makes Virg inia a special place to live and work.” Ellis said V.O.I.C.E. trains ordinary Northern Virginia residents in personto person organizing to build relational power across racial, economic, political party, and religious divides. “It challenges people to imagine the change they can accomplish, connects individuals and organizations to multiply their power, and organizes people by the hundreds and thousands to make their voices heard.” V.O.I.C.E. has a track record of concrete victories since its inception in 2008. In Prince William County, Ellis and Savage led a multi-year V.O.I.C.E. campaign to get major national lenders to address predatory mortgage lending practices that devastated neighborhoods in the County

during the recent recession. Ultimately, V.O.I.C.E. won more than $30 million dollars for housing counselors, credit restoration and new mortgage loans, and community reinvestment from such lenders as Bank of America, JP Morgan Chase, and General Electric. “These funds will continue to help our area for years,” Ellis noted. More recently, V.O.I.C.E. successfully organized parents to challenge the County School Board to reverse a decision to reject federal funds for expansion of pre-K for low- and moderate-income children. “Thanks to this hard work, 576 children will have access to pre-K education over the next four years,” Savage noted. He said V.O.I.C.E. also has done training for immigrants on complying with government regulations and has worked with residents of a seniors apartment

US Congressional Rep Hoyer Meets with Prince George's Muslims By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter

Keith Ellison extolled the participants that the American system was ‘made to be lobbied’. “If you do not engage with the system, the system will keep rolling it just wont have your point of view in it,” he said. Legislators don’t know what you think is the right thing,” he added. “If you call and reach out you may not get everything you want as soon as you want it but, Insha’Allah, you will get what you want…with patience,” said Congressman Ellison.

Usually when politicians come to masajid, they are given the pulpit and make promises and leave. In a rare but crucial roundtable meeting organized by the Prince George’s County Muslim Council, several PG County community leaders met with Congressman Steny H. Hoyer of the Fifth District to discuss vital issues of concern on April 29, 2016 after Jummah at the Prince George County Muslim Association.

He called the meeting an excellent step.

Constituents from Bowie, College Park, Lanham, Laurel, Greenbelt, and Capitol Heights attended the roundtable.

Burma Task Force Updates Area Leaders on Persecution of Rohingya Muslims By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter After her husband was killed, Ayesha begged for a ride on a small boat fleeing to Bangladesh. Once the group of Rohingya arrived in Bangladesh, the government refused to let them in. Ayesha was pushed back in the sea. Stripped of legal documents by the Burmese government, she had nowhere to return. No one knows where Ayesha is. Tens of thousands of Rohingya die like this in their wooden dingys at sea. Three-hundred masajid were destroyed, and those that remain are barren as Muslims are not allowed to enter them for Ramadan or Jumuah prayers. There used to be 5 million Rohingya. Now only 3 million are left. This is genocide. On May 14, 2016, Muslim leaders in

the DC Metro gathered at the Hyatt in Sterling for a leadership briefing about the situation in Burma. Imam Abdul Malik Mujahid, the Chairman of the Burma Task Force spoke about the a devastating impact of Islamophobia on Muslims in Burma and the Central African Republic (CAR). As in Burma, almost all the CAR mosques have been wiped out. Dr Wakar Uddin, a Rohingya American, spoke as well, as well the Uighur representatives from East Turkistan. And in Burma, after putting the Rohingya Muslims in concentration camps, the newly elected Minister wants Buddhists to be citizens and Muslims to be a lesser form of associate citizens. Imam Mujahid informed the leadership that the genocide didn’t start yesterday and will not be over in a few weeks. It will require a sustained effort by professionals

Baltimore Chapter of ICNA Relief Tackles Food Insecurity By Muslim Link Staff ICNA Relief is a domestic charity that helps with disaster relief, transitional housing, back to school supplies, and health clinics.

In a time where American Muslims actively need to increase their civic engagement, ICNA Relief is set to open two food pantries in Maryland and take over the Hajar's Hope Women's Center, a shelter for women run by longtime principal of the Islamic Society of Baltimore Weekend School, Nasrin Rahman. These announcements were made at the Need to Feed event hosted by ICNA Relief, Baltimore Chapter staff.

According to research done by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 49 million Americans live in "food insecure" households meaning they don't know where their next meal is going to come from. Maryland is home to more than 750,000 people who do not have enough to eat, according to the Feeding America’s 2016 Map the Meal Gap Report.

23-year-old UMBC student, Saad Malik, heads the chapter. He shred that the food pantries will be set in Baltimore City and at Masjid Ansar, a project of the Islamic Center of Annapolis, in Annapolis. Shaykh Yasin Sheikh of the Islamic Society of Baltimore led the fundraising. Despite the many empty seats on a late Sunday night, the brand new chapter raised a total of $44,769 on the evening of April 24, 2016, a testament to the dedication of the youth volunteers and the work of relief workers. Sabah Muktar, the young woman who introduced President Obama on his visit to Islamic Society of Baltimore was the MC. She is an ICNA Relief Ambassador of Hope for Youth. A short video on the need for transitional housing produced by United Kingdom based Sister for Solace was shown which highlighted the issues faced by new Muslims.

Imam Mikaeel Smith spoke about the health of a nation and the development of social capital. Social capital for communities refers to establishing trustbased networks; it is defined by generosity and volunteerism. He referenced Robert Putnam, the Harvard professor of public policy, who wrote Bowling Alone, a book on the decline of American communities, Putnam distinguished between two types of social capital: “bonding,” which occurs within like-minded groups, and “bridging,” which occurs between them. Imam Mikaeel stressed the need for our communities to form bridges. According to Putnam most Americans in ethnically diverse cities are “hunkering down”, a term he uses to describe the lack of trust he discovered among most North Americans in diverse urban settings. “Inhabitants of diverse communities

tend to withdraw from collective life, to distrust their neighbors, regardless of the color of their skin, to withdraw even from close friends, to expect the worst from their community and its leaders, to volunteer less, give less to charity and work on community projects less often, vote less … have less faith that they can actually make a difference, and to huddle unhappily in front of the television,” he writes in his report E Pluribus Unum: Diversity and Community in the 21st century. “The best way to build bridges is to work for the common good of the people,” said Maqsood Ahmad, the Executive Director of ICNA Relief, “…without compromising our faith.” “We live in a nation of good people, ignore the troublemakers and continue your work,” he stated.

Hunger Prevention is also an initiative of ICNA Relief aimed at raising community awareness. Nationwide, ICNA Relief's Nourish America campaign provides nutritious, fresh foods to lowincome Americans struggling to buy food. Some of current programs include: Mercy on Wheels, Soup Kitchens, Food Pantries, Ramadan Food Baskets and Skip Lunch, Feed a Hungry Child. Yasmin Mogahed keynoted the event reminding the audience of the connection between the spiritual heart and charity. Her speech on finding solace in service included ways that service affects happiness in positive psychology. “Acts of gratitude [and generosity] affect the brain,” she said. “When we show Mercy to People, Allah shows Mercy to us,” she stressed. Service increases dopamine. Now that is something we can all get addicted to.

their holidays.”

>> continued from pg 8

“America has always been bedeviled by those who want to sow hate rather than love,” said Congressman Hoyer, who is from a first generation Danish immigrant family. “There is no country that is immune to prejudice and hatred and violence,” he added. Immigrants are most courageous, entrepreneurial, risktaking people from around the world, who left family, language and culture for opportunity and ability to improve their lot, he said, but face prejudice if they are in sizable numbers. “I am a Baptist and a lot of the Ku Klux Klan are Baptist. Does that mean I am a terrorist?” he asked, sympathizing with the sentiments of the participants. He said that he came out to hear from his constituents. “I am worried about this presidential campaign which is stoking prejudice, anger and that violence against each other is acceptable,” he stressed. No peace without justice was a point brought up by attendees.

The chairman of the Somali American Community organization, Ahmed Elmi, brought up the issue of 2000 Somali and 3000 Bengali asylum seekers who are languishing in ICE prisons for over three years. “Is there a way for non-profits to find the next of kin and connect them to families?” he asked. He quoted a recent Muslim Link article on this issue for reference. Elmi suggested expanding the Temporary protected status (TPS) for asylum seekers so they don’t sit in prisons and take drastic measures to come into the U.S. illegally. “When things get better in their country they can return,” he suggested. The Congressmen asked the organization to send a list of the names of men so he can find out the status for their families. Amongst the topics of concern that were brought up by the PGMC was the recognition of Eid holidays and closing of schools on these holidays. Although this was not a federal issue, Johnson believes that voices from the top will help support the conversation. “This is a way that other students can understand their [Muslim classmates] when schools are closed on

State Senator Benson gave suggestions on better community engagement with Annapolis as well as the local school board. She gave her support and urged the Muslims leaders to convene a meeting with those who make decisions in PG County in a local masjid. “Invite them here,” she stressed. PGMC pledged to follow up as they had on the issue of praying in school. As Congressman Hoyer sits on the Tr a n s p o r t a t i o n , Tr e a s u r y a n d General Government Appropriations Subcommittee and is a national leader on issues affecting Federal employees and retirees, Johnson of PGMC made a rallying call for halal investment options for Muslim pensioners. “As Muslims there are certain things we cannot invest in,” he informed the elected officials, “but the investment decisions are made by the company or municipality or state etc. “That could become really complex …in the implementation,” replied the Congressman. One of the sisters attending the roundtable suggested adding

halal alternatives to the mix, instead of reinventing the wheel specifically for Muslims. Jameelah Malik, a teacher from High Bridge Elementary School in Prince George’s County, who was selected as an Irreplaceable Teacher in the school district for her hard work and dedication in March 2016, was met with applause as she greeted the Congressman. Imam Talib Abdul-Samad of IRHSCA brought up his concerns about transgender legislation. The roundtable was followed by an informal internal discussion about cutting edge issues facing the Muslim community. The Congressman was asked to supports resolution on the recognition of Islamophobia and concerns about the CVE program were reiterated by community members. Constituents also brought up legislation being drawn up by Congressman Don Beyer in Virginia and asked the Rep. Hoyer for his support.

his election to represent Florida at the Democratic National Convention in support of Bernie Sanders. Virginia is Bedier’s second home. registering support for the Democratic Party. In the poll conducted by Muslim think thank the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU), Hillary Clinton is the candidate most preferred with the highest support from Muslims among the four religious groups surveyed. The poll also noted that Muslim citizens' top concerns are the economy, civil rights, and education. American Muslims for Hilary held an event that took place in late April at the Shady Grove campus of the University of Maryland. There were 500 people present. Organized by Dr. Islam Siddiqui of the American Muslim Institute and Tufail Ahmed of the Montgomery County Muslim Council and with help from Terry Lierman, former chairman of the Democratic party of Maryland, the establishment Muslims and their allies entrenched in government were out in full force. Most were in their 60s and older. Keynote speakers US Representative Elijah Cummings (D-7th District) and John Podesta, chair of Hillary for America as well as U.S. Representative John Sarbanes (D-3rd District) and U.S. Secretary of Labor Tom Perez made remarks during the event. Congressman Cummings touched on the current tone of the presidential campaign and challenged politicians and voters to value the diversity of America. “Diversity is not our problem, it’s our promise,” Cummings said in a thumping speech. Sultan Chowdhury is an organizer and member of the Coalition of American Muslims for Hillary said that the event was an opportunity for the Muslim community to engage in the political process. Tahira Anwar of Gaithersburg came out to show Muslim numbers,” Hilary wins or not, I want them to see our numbers.” She recalls a time when America was a safe country. Now she feels that free speech has morphed in harmful speech. “Talent used to be awarded,” said the mother of three professionals. Despondent about the lack of unity in the Muslim voices, she urged Muslims to show up and vote. “I am voting for Hillary because she

is a woman,” says Tanzeem Abbasi, a daycare provider, as she recruited volunteers at the American Muslim for Hilary event. “It will be good to have a woman leader shape America ... women solve problems in a proper way and she is the most experienced [candidate],” she added. Abbasi was active in the Obama campaign, phone banking and calling community members to vote.

“Which candidate's policies are most in line with broader Muslim American values, interests and concerns, particularly given the rising tide of Islamophobia and Muslim scapegoating?” asked Professor Zareena Grewal, recently tenured at Yale University and Donna Auston in an opinion piece in Al –Jazeera.

A study by CAIR found that 74 percent of Muslim Americans intended to vote in the 2016 presidential primaries, with 67 percent registering support for the Democratic Party.

Many of the younger generation of Muslims do not agree with Clinton’s politics calling her a war hawk and out of touch with social justice issues. They have thrown their support behind Senator Bernie Sanders. Muslim US Representative Keith Ellison (D-MN) has endorsed Sanders as has Muslim basketball icon and columnist Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Bernie Sanders is the only candidate that has visited the Nation’s Mosque, Masjid Muhammad in D.C.

“To his credit, Sanders voted against the US PATRIOT Act and openly critiqued sweeping surveillance of Muslim Americans after 9/11, which presumes a similar stance against expanding counter-radicalisation (CVE) policing programmes,” write the duo, with the help of other Muslim political commentators, many who are in the 30s and 40s, such as law professor Khaled Beydoun and Duke Professor Omid Safi. The founder of Muslim Americans for Bernie Sanders, Ahmed Bedier, won

“I know there are no candidates that are holistic on all the issues that we all care about and fight for every day. I get it. But we gotta get in this. While we continue to build political power and the political capital to create a more competitive field… He has proved his consistency in his platforms - he has been an activist challenging the status quo for decades. He can be moved on other issues. I believe that. Ideological purity without political power will never move us towards the victories that we need for our communities. I am not asking you to compromise, I am asking you to see the broader long-term vision. We are in this for the long haul but for now, we are in crisis and we cannot afford to sit this one out. We need to SHOW UP. We need to get off the complaints counter and get on the claims counter. We will continue to create a democracy by the people for the people, not one that is bought by and owned by the 1%. Until then. Time is now,” she said as she issued her endorsement. Other says “I love Bernie, but,” questioning his electability., while others say that he is the only candidate that can beat Donald Trump as he is not linked to any political scandals. According to Politico, in the Democratic primary, Clinton leads Sanders nationally by 14 points, 54 percent to 40 percent. “But it’s the Vermont senator who beats Trump in a hypothetical head-to-head by a wider margin, 53 percent to 41 percent.”

background with limited rights. True Islam teaches us that this should not be the case. Women have an important role in Islam and if anything, their status is elevated. Our proof of this was Lady Khadijah (Allah be pleased with her), the wife of Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam. She was on the forefront of entrepreneurship,” he said. The first person to accept Islam had a business larger than all the trade conducted by her tribe combined. “What makes this even more impressive is that Lady Khadijah did this in a time where society was male-dominated and dangerous.” A successful merchant and a charitable woman who fed and clothed the poor, Lady Khadijah assisted her relatives financially and employed many people to conduct trade on her behalf. She had a reputation of conducting fair dealings, carrying high quality goods, and exhibiting strong business integrity, the kind of ethics that makes a role model. “In honor of her entrepreneurship and status in Islam, what better way to celebrate a strong seasoned businesswoman and mother then to create a scholarship in her name? This is why we chose to name the scholarship after her and why we tied the scholarship to entrepreneurship,” said Rizvi, who presented the awards at the college. The College held its bi-annual Spring Entrepreneurial Celebration sponsored by the HCC’s Center for Entrepreneurial & Business Excellence (CEBE) and other organizations. At $3000 the Lady Khadijah fund is at par with the Pinnacle Entrepreneur Prize, which is also given at the event. First prize was awarded to Howard Community College student, Kayleigh Harkay, who won a $2,000 scholarship. “Kayleigh Harkay took the prize for her business idea, PerdidoFido. This business is based on the creation of a utility pet collar that creates a nationwide GPS reach through a locator attached to a pet's collar. The collar also has the ability to track a pet's daily temperature, heart rate, respiration, and blood pressure,” shared Rizvi.

Zachary Olmstead secured the second prize of $1000 scholarship for his business idea, Healthy Ice Cream. This business produces and sells healthy ice cream made from frozen fruits and nuts blended together. The product is a healthy alternate to ice cream and can accommodate people who need to eat gluten-free and dairy-free. The criteria for the awards were based on the best business pitches. Howard Community College and their judges were given full discretion to decide the winners of the Lady Khadijah Scholarship award. The judges included Peter Ettinger,

executive director, Maryland Center for Entrepreneurship; Stacie Hunt, chief executive officer, Leadership Howard County; Emily Kim, founder, Uma Uma Restaurant; Athar Rafiq, cyber lab services manager, Howard Community College; and Beth Woodring, fund manager, Howard County Economic Development Authority. As many Muslims are entrepreneurs and the faith teaches that there is much blessing in trade, the encouragement of young fortune-hunters was a given. “Entrepreneurship leads us to the

promised land of innovation. We need to support the dreamers and tinkerers looking to address the global challenges of our ever-changing world. The fact is businesses need to evolve constantly with the world’s shifting demands. That is why we support the growth of young entrepreneurs, as they will be on the forefront of emerging technology and creating thriving businesses. When businesses are created, this will create employment opportunities for many,” says Rizvi.

As hard as it is to believe there is a Muslims for Trump contingent based in the DC area. Kamal Nawash is a DC based lawyer. “"I respect people who understand how to make a deal," Nawash says of Trump, in an interview with Al Jazeera. Sajid Tarar, a 52-year-old gas station owner who sat on the Governor’s Commission of Small Business, hosted an American Muslims for Trump event in his Baltimore home. He believes that Trump’s message is ‘twisted’ by media and in the myth that the U.S. doesn’t have a system that vets refugees. "CAIR believes most of Trump's Muslim supporters tend to vote with their wallets and are more attracted to his economic proposals, lower taxes for private business owners, sidestepping any concern they might have about his Islamophobic rhetoric," says Robert S. McCaw, government affairs manager for the Council on American-Islamic Relations. “I felt that my religious values aligned with the Republican Party platform,” said Saba Ahmed, the founder of the Republican Muslim Coalition, a group that educates Republicans about Muslims, explaining what prompted her to join the party five years ago. “We are prolife, pro-traditional family values, probusiness and trade—those are things that Republicans really care about and are supposed to advocate for.” She has said on record that she believes that Trump can be educated about Islam. Many others who remained in the big tent party are worried. Mohamed Elibairy, a Republican from Texas who stood by Jeb Bush for two years and voted for Marc Rubio in the Texas primary says, as he headed out of the Republican Convention, ‘15 years into the fight his party is demoralizing him’. He said on Democracy Now, that ‘as a consequence of the party elders making the miscalculation that Trump was going to flame out, he’s now kind of solidified the base of the politically radical right and is the Republican party nominee. “I don’t look at Trump and say he created this constituency. I saw that it existed, with all its hate and xenophobia and anger. But

he’s coming to lead it, he said. “On the good news front, the Islamophobes had a whole lot invested [Ted] Cruz and that campaign ended with a humiliating defeat and bad blood with Trump's people. So those guys have been largely silent the past few weeks because they no longer know how to move their agenda forward.” Analyzing the deep machine, he says that the Islamophobes want a controlled dose of low level Islamophobia

should always be determined by which state they live in. “Remember we don't pick Presidents nationally, we pick them state by state. So in some states that are moderate/purple states, a Muslim Republican might join a Republicans for Hillary group and go to town to weaken Trump from there. In other states where Trump will solidly win then they can chose to not vote on the presidential line but vote for down ballot campaigns they've engaged with and found to be

and more targeted government actions at home to stifle the political influence of American Muslims in the foreign policy sphere. “Trump goes overboard in his Islamophobic comments, which [trigger] broad pushback domestically and overseas which actually ends up mainstreaming Muslims. Plus the Islamophobes deep down feel Trump is a capitalist sell out they can't really count on. His recent reversal on the Muslim Ban to call it just a suggestion is a case in point that proves their worst fears and makes them less excited to support him aggressively for November.” His advice to Muslim Republicans remains the same as after 9/11, “stay confident, work at the state level and keep your eye on the long-term prize because our time will come around 2025.” Elibiary thinks one's election strategy

moderate/inclusive. Or they can cast a protest third party (ex. Libertarian) vote on the presidential line and frame it as Trump isn't a principled constitutional conservative enough nominee for them. And finally if one's a Muslim Republican with deep enough roots to fight internal battles in the GOP, and those few know who they are around the country, then they can work the media to put pressure on Trump.” Sayyid Syeed is the national director of the Islamic Society of North America’s Office for Interfaith and Community Alliances in Washington D.C. He sees the current election with its exaggerated language and extreme rhetoric as an evil that may push people to do more good. “I am sure this will bring out the best of America and we need to be involved in that. Muslims have also been jolted by it and we hope that our leaders, journalists,

Muslims who are aware and involved will take the whole community with them.” Syeed smiles when asked about November and says, “We will not have another Trump; this will be the last trump in America.” “American Muslims now know the value of elections, of grassroots movements. It is very critical that evil become well-defined then you rush for something good.” Syeed has noticed many more Muslims running for elected offices, from school boards to city councils—‘our second and third generation, children and grandchildren of immigrant doctors.’ Locally, in the Maryland Senate race, many Muslims supported Rep. Donna Edwards of Prince George’s County. “You may pretty much vote for whosoever you want but for the Maryland's Senate race we should vote for Donna Edwards - the lady who has the guts to stand up to Israel's dreaded lobby, AIPAC,” wrote Makhdoom. “The Muslim community faces a myriad of challenges both in-house and abroad that require Donna's guts, intellect and foresight to resolve. Her record has established her not to be a "yes-man" to any foreign lobby in Senate. Throughout she has fully supported Obama's various initiatives including his hallmark Obama Care. It is time that we send to Senate a person who can tackle all these challenges, and that person is, Donna Edwards,” urged a director of the Montgomery County Muslim Council Rashid Makhdoom. Makhdoom, who is the former President of the Muslim Community Center, is a resident of Potomac. The Prince George’s Muslim Council had also endorsed Edwards for her Senate race. “It is important that our community not get so absorbed by the presidential race that we forget an important fact immortalized by the statement of former Speaker of the House of Representatives Tip O’Neill, All politics is local,” Jameel Aalim-Johnson reminded the Muslim community in Maryland. Based upon experience, understanding of Washington and electability, the members of PGMC supported Glenn Ivey for Congress in the 4th District. Despite a tough race, Edwards lost the seat to Van Hollen and Anthony Brown defeated Ivey in the primary reminding us that all politics is, indeed, local.

Running for the Hills

Garden Paths By Jann McClary

Muslim Link Contributing Writer

In May of 2011, Sister Jann McClary and her husband Tariq moved from the Washington DC metropolitan area to establish a new home in the mountains of Colorado, building it from the ground up as part of their plan to become free of the spiritual and physical stress of modern urban life. Sister Jann is documenting her experiences for the Muslim Link. See her earlier installments at www.muslimlinkpaper.com by searching for Running for the Hills. Make sure you select "Exact Phrase" in the search options. --TML So. Here we are. Again. In my garden. It's that special time when this alleged gardener has suddenly awoken from a winter's hibernation to begin frantically, maniacally getting her garden in order to host spring plantings. But guess who got there first? Voles. Moles. Groundhogs. Prairie dogs. Pack rats. Mice. I don't know! Whatever names these furry little digging machines are known by, they've spent the winter tunneling throughout my garden and walkways! Least they could have done would've been to do some of that digging above ground and maybe cleared some walkways for me through the snow. Inconsiderate little varmints. But that's okay. I've got plans to fortify my pathways. The garden beds will take some extra effort; metal screens at the bases to deter those critters intent on sampling my produce before I do. I've got some

....

mesh from an old RV screen door which I intend to use, along with some du'ah to protect the garden. Then I gotta figure out where they're coming in. Rodents are sneaky little dudes. Remember when Iblis (lanatallah) tells Allah 'azza wa jal in Surat-al A'raaf, ayat 17: “Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and you will not find most of them as thankful ones.”? Yeah, rodents are like that, too. You never know where they'll come in from so you have to circumvent, lay siege, booby-trap, flush 'em out, and otherwise do what ya gotta do to keep them from poking holes in what you're trying to cultivate. Yeah, the shayaateen are like that. A shaytaan, like a little digger, will rarely confront you head-on. It hides where you can't see or hear it. Then it covertly infiltrates your pathway, leaving little craters, holes or piles of mess in your deen to make you stumble over, seriously hobbling your efforts to grow your eman. So I'm working on my paths, gathering up and putting into place the big rocks and then filling in between with stones and the ubiquitous mud. My garden's being safeguarded with solid, hard ground. Take that, you devilish diggers! While all this may thwart the underground threat, there's still another menace to my paths: Rain. Even though we live in the dry southwest, each spring we get an almost daily deluge of it, usually right around dhuhr time. Oftentimes you hear people whining, “But we neeed the moisture!”, and we do, because it helps dampen the dry grasses prevalent in these part that are a source of local wild fires every year. And these same folks gripe and grumble when their dirt roads have turned into what amounts to a swamp. All that rain day after day produces rivulets that swell drop by drop into cascades that

Spike In 'Flying While Muslim' Incidents FLYING

>> continued from pg 1

In a flight from Chicago to New Mexico, a North Carolina man ripped off a Muslim woman’s hijab and screamed “This is America!” during a Southwest Airlines flight late last year. He has since entered a plea agreement according to court documents. Locally, Hakima Abdulle, a resident of Takoma Park, MD was on a Seattle bound Southwest Airline flight— excited as she was on the way to help take care of a new mother in the family; her niece was expecting a baby. The sister, who speaks Somali and a little English, asked the passenger next to her to switch seats with her so she could sit next to the window. He agreed. As Southwest has an open seating policy this would normally not be a big deal until the flight attendant had problem with her seat change. She intervened, telling them they could not move, according to Zainab Chaudry of CAIR-MD. Police arrived and escorted Abdulle, much to her humiliation, because the flight attendant told police that she did not feel comfortable. Abdulle, who wears a headscarf, was then booted off the plane, which had not taken off the tarmac. "Without an adequate explanation as to why this Muslim passenger was removed from the flight and humiliated in front of other travelers, we must call for an investigation of a possible bias motive for the actions of the flight crew," said Chaudry. "We don't know for sure whether this was a case of religious bias, but

Abdulle and her husband, Abukar Fadaw, want an apology from Southwest and training for their airline’s staff. According to Fadaw, who was on the phone to his wife at the time of the incident, the staff ignored him when he asked them why his wife was removed from the flight. 'She was humiliated because of her religion and the way she dressed,” he said. Abdalle was crying and 'suffered extreme distress and anxiety as a result of this experience,’ said her husband in a press conference arranged by CAIR.

Recently, an Italian, Guido Menzio, who is a Ivy League professor, was removed from an American Airlines flight because the woman sitting next to him expressed concerns after seeing him writing math equations in a notebook. Menzio, who has ‘dark, curly hair, olive skin and an exotic foreign accent,’ was taken off the plane for questioning. Muslim Advocates and NAACP Legal Defense Fund in a letter to the U.S. Department of Transportation urged the department to take immediate action to enforce federal anti-discrimination prohibitions. The letter demands a full investigation and public report on investigation

Senate Grants September 11 Victims the Right to Sue Saudi Arabia Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act gives victims’ families the right to sue for any role the Saudi government may have played in the 2001 attacks Associated Press, May 17, 2016

House.

The Senate passed legislation on Tuesday that would allow families of September 11 victims to sue the government of Saudi Arabia, rejecting the fierce objections of a US ally and setting Congress on a collision course with the Obama administration.

Schumer was confident the Senate had the necessary two-thirds vote of the chamber to override a presidential veto.

The Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, approved by voice vote, had triggered a threat from Riyadh to pull billions of dollars from the US economy if the bill is enacted.

Senator Lindsey Graham, the chairman of the Senate subcommittee that controls foreign aid, had blocked the bill from moving to the Senate floor until changes were made to ensure the legislation didn’t backfire on the United States.

The legislation, sponsored by senators John Cornyn and Chuck Schumer gives victims’ families the right to sue in US court for any role that elements of the Saudi government may have played in the 2001 attacks that killed thousands in New York, the Washington DC area and Pennsylvania. The House still must act on the legislation. Relatives of September 11 victims have urged the Obama administration to declassify and release US intelligence that allegedly discusses possible Saudi involvement in the attacks.

“We don’t think their arguments stand up,” the New York lawmaker said at a news conference after the Senate action.

The treasury department said Monday that Saudi Arabia in March held $116.8bn in Treasury debt.

Saudi foreign minister Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir denied earlier this month that the kingdom made any threats over the bill. He said Riyadh had warned investor confidence in the US would shrink if the bill became law.

Passage of the bill sends the message that the United States “will combat terrorism with every tool we have available, and that the victims of terrorist attacks in our country should have every means at their disposal to seek justice”, Cornyn said.

“In fact what they [Congress] are doing is stripping the principle of sovereign

The White House has said the bill could expose Americans overseas to legal risks, and spokesman Josh Earnest said Tuesday efforts to revise the legislation fell short in addressing the administration’s concerns about preserving sovereign immunity. “Given the concerns that we’ve expressed, it’s difficult to imagine the president signing this legislation,” Earnest told reporters at the White

Graham’s apprehension was rooted in the possibility a foreign country could sue the United States if the door is opened for US citizens to take the Saudis to court. Graham released his hold earlier this month, clearing the way for Senate action. Senator John McCain, the chairman of the armed services committee, also had warned that the legislation, if passed, would alienate Saudi Arabia and undermine a longstanding yet strained relationship with a critical US ally in the Middle East. Schumer said it is false to claim that the bill encourages retaliation or litigation against the United States. “We’re not busy training people to blow up buildings and kill innocent civilians in other countries,” Schumer said.

"Ramadan is the (month) in which the Quran was sent down, as a guide to mankind and a clear guidance and judgment (so that mankind will distinguish from right and wrong).." (Qur'an 2:183) Oh you who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that you many learn piety and righteousness" (Qur'an 2:183) "Indeed We have revealed it (Qur'an) in the night of Power. And what will explain to you what the night of Power is? The night of Power is better than a thousand months. Therein descends the Angels and the Spirit (Jibreel) by Allah's permission, on every errand: (they say) "Peace" (continuously) till the rise of Morning!" (Q 97:1-5) The Messenger of Allah Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam said, "When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained." (Imam Bukhari) ... Narrated Abu Huraira(r.a): The Messenger of Allah Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam said:"... whoever fasts during Ramadan out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards, then all his past sins will be forgiven." (Imam Bukhari). `Abdullah ibn `Amr reported that the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam, said: "The fast and the Qur'an are two intercessors for the servant of Allah on the Day of Resurrection. The fast will say: 'O Lord, I prevented him from his food and desires during the day. Let me intercede for him.' The Qur'an will say: 'I prevented him from sleeping at night. Let me intercede for him.' And their intercession will be accepted." [Imam Ahmad] He who is amongst those who pray will be called from the gate of the prayer (in Paradise) and he who is from the people of Jihad will be called from the gate of Jihad, and he who is from those' who give in charity (i.e. Zakat) will be called from the gate of charity, and he who is amongst those who observe fast will be called from the gate of fasting, the gate of Raiyan." Abu Bakr said, "He who is called from all those gates will need nothing," He added, "Will anyone be called from all those gates, O Allah's Apostle?" He said, "Yes, and I hope you will be among those, O Abu Bakr." [Imam Bukhari] Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam said : "The time between the five prayers, two consecutive Friday Prayers, and two consecutive Ramadans are expiations for all that has happened during that period, provided that one has avoided the grave (major) sins." [Imam Muslim] Every action of the son of Adam is given manifold reward, each good deed receiving then times its like, up to seven hundred times. Allah the Most High said, 'Except for fasting, for it is for Me and I will give recompense for it, he leaves off his desires and his food for Me.' for the fasting person there are two times of joy; a time when he breaks his fast and a time of joy when he meets his Lord, and the smell coming from the mouth of the fasting person is better with Allah than the smell of musk." [Imam Bukhari] "Fasting is a shield with which a servant protects himself from the Fire." [Imam Ahmad, Saheeh]

noted “Restrictions on access to markets, livelihoods, and other basic services in Rakhine State can lead to communities unnecessarily risking their lives in an attempt to improve their quality of life.” The extremist Buddhist monk organization, the MaBaTha, its supporters, including the youth group, Myanmar National Network organized a 500 strong protest in front of the US embassy in response to the statement, demanding that they not use the name "Rohingya." khutbah a man stood up and asked him to invoke Allah subhana wa t'ala for rain. So he did, and it rained and rained all the way to the next jumu'ah, so much so that a man stood up and asked Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) to invoke Allah to stop the rain. So he did, saying, “O Allah,

"No Rohingya"; denial of identity is one of the signs of genocide. Burma Task Force and its supporters contacted the US embassy in Yangon and the State Department, ‘emphasizing that they must continue to use the name Rohingya and defy the extremists and bigots who wish to deny that the Rohingya Muslims are an indigenous people living in their ancestral lands’. Since then, matters have worsened: Aung San Suu Kyi, long fawned over as a Nobel Peace Prize winner, human rights and democracy advocate has caved to the hate message of extremist Buddhist protesters, siad Mujahid. The Wall Street Journal reports that the Foreign Ministry, headed by Suu round about us and not on us.” Because I don't have Rasulullah's (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) caliber of du'ah, the rocks should keep the soil from washing away, bi'idhnillah. Figuring out where best to make your path and maintain it seems easier than it actually is. There's constant vigilance, repair, adjustments and additions to keep it smooth and solid, to keep it direct and not meandering off here or there: To have

Kyi, released a directive to all foreign embassies that they not use "Rohingya" to describe the persecuted minority. "'We have never accepted this term,' Kyaw Zay Ya, a deputy director general of the ministry, said in an interview Thursday, confirming it had sent an advisory to diplomats. Ultimately it is 'up to them' whether to follow the recommendation, he added." The new ambassador of the United States to Myanmar, Scot Marciel, said he would keep using the term Rohingya for the persecuted Muslim minority. To learn how your community can help the Rohingya join the Burma Task Force www.burmaMuslims.org it take you exactly where you want to go. Has a rock shifted out of place? Whack it back down with your mallet. Has some fill-in stone gotten loose enough for infiltrators to get through? Better throw some more mud in there and let it harden. You have to make your pathway with whatever tools and materials you have available. Got as hand shovel? Check. Got a mallet? Check. Got Rocks? Check. Got du'aat and tawakkul? Check. Amin, check.

Send Muslims in Prison a Gift this Ramadan Every year, the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms (NCPCF) sends money generously donated by you to Muslims in prison, many imprisoned due to the injustice of the War on Terror, to help them purchase special Ramadan items such as dates with which they can break their fast. For Muslims worldwide, Ramadan is a special time to reconnect with family and friends, and so it can be an especially hard time for Muslim prisoners to be away from their loved ones. We wanted to share with you some words of appreciation from those who received this gift from you last year: "I saw the money in my account from an unknown source. I could not figure out who placed it in my account. When I received your letter and read it halfway, it dawned on me, you sent me the money, and I began to cry and cry and cry...Thank you so much for your kindness." Tell our Muslim brothers and sisters in prison that they are part of the community, too. Donate a gift at http://www.civilfreedoms.org/?p=21597 ....
