Though domestic abuse becomes more openly discussed, be it spousal or child abuse, there is arguably less scrutiny when it comes to the treatment of senior citizens by family members. As the

Community News Maryland Leadership Organization Launches National Scholarship Program By Urooj Fatima

One local Islamic organization is reaching into its funds to provide emergency funds for deserving college students. Scholars for the World, a project led and designed by the Islamic Leadership Institute of America, a local non-profit organization focused on education, aims to provide scholarship funding to undergraduate college students in the United States in the fall of 2012. These scholarships will be worth $500 each.

ILIA raised money for the scholarships by applying for grants, conducting an elaborate mail campaign, hosting a fundraising dinner, holding monthly car washes and soliciting donations from individual donors. Those interested can make their tax deductible donations directly on the ILIA website.

The undergraduate scholarships, which cover any major at any accredited college, are good for one semester, but applicants are welcome to reapply. According to a survey of more than 600 people aged 22 to 30 conducted by Public Agenda, a nonpartisan research group, “most dropouts leave college because they have trouble going to school while working to support themselves.” About 35 percent of college students surveyed in research funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation said that balancing work and school was too stressful. “This phenomena is further compounded in the Muslim community,” said Ayman Nassar, founder and chair of ILIA’s board of directors. “We are starting to see many youth not continue their education in our communities because they are forced to work longer hours to make ends meet.” ILIA’s newly established board of

scholarship is still determining the requirements for eligibility, but they will show a preference for students under financial strain. This scholarship will be a long-term effort and is intended to grow each year. The first year is the establishment phase, and the second year will be a reinforcement phase to see if the scholarship program can hold on to its donors. By the third year, Abdul Qadir hopes to double the scholarship money, maybe even triple it. “This is a dream come true for me,” Abdul Qadir said. “By giving out these scholarships I hope to make this world a better place.”

Muslim Link Staff Reporter “I thought I would be paranoid,” said Lily Motobar, a non-Muslim rising junior at Northwest High School in Germantown, Maryland. “I was right.”

Motobar recently agreed to conduct a social experiment for The Muslim Link. For one day, she would walk into a mall and shop as a hijab-wearing Muslim, in America. At first, she was hesitant about the experiment. She was worried that she didn’t know how to act as a Muslim wearing a hijab (headscarf). The challenge was to walk into a mall and shop at Victoria’s Secret and Hot Topic. Post-9/11 America has grown very suspicious of Muslims and especially those wearing the headscarf. These women challenge American cultural norms. A quick search on The Urban Dictionary defines the hijab as “a sign of the dark ages.” Yet, many American Muslims wear hijab full-time. This experiment sought to explore how American Muslims feel wearing the hijab in a society where it is abnormal.

The Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, Virginia’s oldest faith-based advocacy group, has recently started a new campaign titled “Rethink Bias.” The group will display three unique posters depicting people in various religious head coverings on the outside of Richmond’s GRTC buses. The campaign aims to educate people and create respect for the practices of the diverse religious groups in the area. Many agree that while religious bias is a huge problem in our society, getting rid of it in one clean sweep will not be possible. Can a simple program like this be effective in eliminating religious bias? “Some people look at me like I am a threat” said Narmin Anwar, a data analyst and hijab-wearing Muslim. “They tense up when I enter the bank or the train station.”

Many Muslims feel a negative religious bias in America. According to the Pew Research Center, about a quarter of all Muslim Americans have experienced some sort of discrimination. Muslim women wearing the hijab feel the effects of discrimination even more because they are more noticeable. Although many do treat Muslims kindly, the hostility of others is a major problem. Anwar believes education is the obvious solution to tackling this problem. Education is exactly the idea behind The Virginia Interfaith Center’s new campaign. The three unique posters will depict a woman in a hijab, a Jewish man wearing a yarmulke, and two Sikh students wearing turbans. On each poster is a variation of the phrase, “Why do I wear this? Immigrant Women Empowered Through Entrepreneurship Program By Wafa Unus

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Empowered Women International (EWI), based in Alexandria, Virginia, held its graduation for the Spring Entrepreneurship Training for Success program on June 23rd. The organization aims to provide in-need immigrant, refugee and other women business skills necessary to launch their own small businesses. By teaching each participant how to best market and capitalize on their skills and talents, EWI offers programs to prepare them for turning a special skill into a career.

EWI’s founder, Marga Fripp, a native of Romania came to the United States in 2001. Leaving her successful journalism career behind and learned first-hand of the struggles of immigrant life in America. While taking English classes at Montgomery College in Takoma Park, Maryland, Fripp met others like herself, immigrant women who were well educated and successful back home but found countless barriers to success in the United States and subsequently suffered financially and emotionally. Fripp founded Empowered Women International in hopes of giving women,

like herself, the opportunity to reinvent themselves and become confident, contributing members of society. The entrepreneurial program focused particularly on that goal. After completing the program, graduates are required to provide twenty hours of services to other women within and outside the program. Instead of learning and leaving, EWI wants their graduates to be “agents of change” in their local community. It’s not all business though. Shannon Lynberg, EWI’s Program Manager, said that the four month intensive entrepreneurship program is also meant

to provide women with other tools as well. “In order for them to become engaged community leaders and give back they have to become empowered as individuals,” said Lynberg. “By the time they graduate, they feel like their self confidence has increased and that they have a place in society.” Lynberg said that though the program is based on entrepreneurship, it works toward giving women a comprehensive

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Over 1,700 Muslims experienced a journey through the Hereafter, Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Washington’s newest and finest conference – DC Hidayah, an annual youth-organized mega event, which centered on the theme “The Last Day.” Held at the Washington Convention Center, the one-day conference was packed with both attendees and knowledge from across the region. Attendance jumped two-fold from last year and the program featured nine 40-minute lectures by locals such as Darussalam’s Imam Safi Khan and Sheikh Karim Abu Zaid and national speakers such as newly appointed AlMaghrib instructor Sheikh Saad Tasleem and Sheikh Omar Suleiman of Louisana. “When you meet Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala on the Day of Judgment, you want it to be a reunion – not an introduction. It begins here.” Suleiman said. This is DC Hidayah’s third conference since a handful of youth pioneered the project in 2010. Sheikh Saad Tasleem of Washington set the stage with a discussion on the minor signs of the Day of Judgment, followed closely by Dr. Abdurrahman Hegazy who tackled the major signs. The remaining speaker line-up transported the audience from the Barzakh to the resurrection to the arrival of Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala. Ustad Sheikh Shakiel Humayun from New York’s Foundation for Knowledge and Development covered the Siraat. The presentations concluded with moving, vivid descriptions of Jannah and Jahannam. “We chose this theme due to its particular relevance this year in 2012 as there has been much talk about the end of times featured in popular culture,” DC Hidayah’s Ameer Farooq Yousuf, an engineer of Sterling, Virginia said. “It is more importantly one of the pillars of faith, so it raises our ‘eeman as we prepare for our next life.” The halls’ setting complemented this

ADAMS Offering Internships With Imam’s Office By Aisha Khatib

This is not the first time that the ADAMS Center has had interns; however, past internships dealt mainly with administrative responsibilities in the office. “This one is specifically for teaching religious affairs on a day-to-day basis,” Magid clarified. Religion takes the front-and-center position for the three interns, as they learn the extensive skill set that is required of imams today.

Muslim Link Staff Reporter The All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Center is looking for three new interns to work part-time with the Office of the Imam, starting July 2nd, 2012. These interns will have the unique privilege of working under the supervision of Imam Mohamed Magid, in the fields of religion and non-profit management. “There needs to be hands-on training for people who want to be imams,” explained Imam Magid. “This is good training in counseling, handling calls, how to keep an Islamic center clean. We don’t have an Islamic management course, so we felt this is the only way possible.” Even for those who do not plan on becoming imams in the future, this internship provides valuable work experience in the field of non-profit management. The most religious aspect of their education during this internship falls under the research and writing that they are required to do. They will be given topics to research that are Islamically related, and core tasks of being an imam. Examples of topics include how to conduct a janaza and how to advise against or discourage divorce.

There are many responsibilities pertaining to this internship. Interns will be trained to do research and writing; handle media relations; plan for Ramadan; become skilled in administrative support, such as answering calls, filing, faxing, and data entry; and prepare for interfaith events. Applicants for the job must be college undergraduates or graduates, with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA, have excellent oral and written communication skills, be able to meet deadlines, and a sense of motivation and humor.

This internship differs from all the others in another way as well: while the administrative interns are there to help manage the Office of the Imam, these interns of Imam Magid are there solely for the benefit of gaining experience and attaining religious knowledge. “The goal is not to delegate tasks - for that we have assistants and an office manager - but to train the interns,” stated Magid firmly. “This is a pilot program - so it’s the first year we’re doing it - but inshaAllah we will continue doing it,” said Magid when asked about the future. “Our goal is to have another masajid do it as well.” All applicants with the requirements should definitely consider applying, as it may turn out to be a fruitful and scholarly way to spend the summer.”

ICM, Dar-us-Salaam Collaborate On Summer Camp By Aisha Khatib

Muslim Link Staff Reporter This summer, Dar-us-Salaam and the Islamic Center of Maryland (ICM) are trying something new in regard to summer camps for the Muslim youth. For the first time, the two masjids combined their resources to hold a joint summer camp. The idea for the collaborative camp made its first rounds in late April 2012, very close to the summer. “For the past three years, we’ve been doing a summer camp in Germantown,” said Haroon Baqai, principal of AlHuda School in College Park, Md. and

a summer camp organizer from Dar-usSalaam. “Then an idea came up that we should do a summer camp with ICM, so instead of doing one in Germantown we consolidated with ICM.” Iqbal Yousuf, a youth trustee with ICM, was the one who thought of a joint summer camp initially. “Basically there are a lot of children and parents, so there is need of service,” he said. “Rather than doing it on our own, we should join with people more experienced [in] teaching.” The camp began successfully on June 20, with around 40 students attending. The number was around what the organizers expected, Baqai said.

Walida Mukhtar, a teacher at Al-Huda School, was invited to direct the camp at ICM. “Some of my roles include developing a good relationship with the parents,” she said. “I resolve conflicts and help the children become comfortable enough to talk to me.” Some of Mukhtar’s other tasks include laying down rules and regulations, making arrangements for field trips and responding to emails. The summer camp lasts approximately six weeks, from June 20 to July 27, and offers a variety of courses.

“It’s mainly a summer Qur’an reading camp,” Mukhtar explained. “We incorporate Islamic Studies as well.” The Qur ’an program is the main focus. However, there are other tracks available, such as language arts, math, and even karate courses. Tuition for the camp ($450 overall, with discounts and financial aid available) covers operational costs of running the camp: namely paying staff, buying supplies and funding field trips. “We have a payment schedule,” Mukhtar clarified, “so some parents enroll their children some weeks and not others.”

ADAMS Walks for Victims of Domestic Violence By Urooj Fatima

Muslim Link Staff Reporter On June 16, 2012, the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) in Sterling, Va. held its first official walk-athon. More than 60 people from around the community, ranging in age 3- to 80-years-old, joined together to raise money for victims of domestic violence and homelessness from 6:30 to 10:00 a.m. The ADAMS boy scouts set up water and first aid tents for the walkers and volunteers cooked a generous breakfast for all of the participants. Each person had to walk a minimum of 10 circles around the masjid and parking lot. One circle was 0.4 miles and sponsors pledged $5 per lap. The turnout was more than what organizers, Sohaira Sultan, Shama Sheikh and Khalid Iqbal had expected. An-

ticipating no more than 20 people, they were shocked to see over 60 registrants. Iqbal, the main organizer, believes the walk was a success. The event raised almost $2000 for victims of domestic violence and homelessness. The purpose of the walk was not only to raise money, but to also raise awareness regarding domestic violence and homelessness. ADAMS Imam Mohamed Magid addressed the issue after the walk. “This issue is prevalent in society but no one talks about it,” Iqbal said. “Often, sisters have nowhere to go. From now on, it will be ‘an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, and he who dealt the first blow is more unjust,’ and you are the ones who have done us an injustice.”

Muslim Link Staff Reporter When the Syrian American community learned that the Foundation for Middle East Peace (FMEP) extended an invitation to Syria’s highest grand cleric, a staunch supporter and ally to President Bashar Al-Assad, to participate in a discussion on peace in Syria, they were quick to mobilize and express their desires for the invitation to be rescinded. Grand Mufti Ahmad Badreddine Hassoun was set to speak in Washington D.C. Thursday, June 28, at an FMEP event titled “Coexistence and Dialogue in Syria” along with Bishop Luka El Khoury, Syrian Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, and Chairman of the Syrian American Forum, Dr. Nasser Ani, - both Assad supporters as well. However, what enraged the Syrian American community was not based solely on the fact that Hassoun is an Assad loyalist and has since the begin-

ning of the revolution blamed “terrorists” and “outside forces” for the bloodshed, but that he openly threatened the U.S. and propagated terrorism on a YouTube video should America decide to intervene in national affairs and attack Syria.

In a phone interview with the Muslim Link, FMEP President Philip Wilcox said that he was advised by peoplewhom he refused to name- to invite Mufti Hassoun thinking it would be a step in helping to resolve the conflict in Syria. “When we learned he gave a sermon in which he threatened to send suicide bombers to the U.S., we were shocked

and found it incompatible with the theme of the event…and that it would undermine our organization,” he said, “and so we decided to cancel the program.” When asked about FMEP’s customary screening process of guests and speakers, Wilcox refused to give details however admitted to the right to be criticized. He also mentioned that no direct communication was conducted between FMEP and Hassoun. In a press release condemning FMEP’s decision, the Syrian Expatriate Organization wrote that it “believes such inflammatory rhetoric is contrary to the fundamental principles of coexistence and dialogue…and to have Hassoun speak at such an event in the U.S. capital is a slap in the face to the principles of freedom, democracy, and tolerance.” In another press release, the American Syrian Coalition thanked FMEP for canceling the event.

Abu Arab described Hama as a “captive city” with its people becoming victims of random and unnecessary raiding and detentions by regime forces “in order to break the resistance of the city.” He proceeded to tell reporters of the June 6 massacre of Qubair; “hundreds of militias and thugs gathered with tanks where they surrounded the farmland of Qubair and began shelling houses at

random, while knowing that the village had nothing to do with the revolution,” he said. “They carried out dozens of field executions.” Citizens were murdered using a variety of methods: slaughtering and stabbing, close-range shooting and burning people alive. began working at night and I was taking care of her during the day,” said Mustafa Alif, a Baltimore, Maryland area resident who has been caring for his 86 year old mother for the past 6 years. “Most men overlook their mother or wife or what have you, when they raise a child at home and how much time they have to take out for a child. I learned how time consuming it was to take care of a parent.” Alif’s mother suffers from several conditions that confine her to one floor of the house, unable to safely move up or down stairs without assistance. “All the time when I was growing up my mother was vibrant. In fact we used to race together, we used to run together,” said Alif. “For me it doesn’t really seem like it was that long. It’s hard when you see your parent in a situation where you’re helpless. This is the person who used to help you with all of your problems.” Alif admitted that the stress sometimes gets to him and though he said he would never intentionally harm his mother, he knows that some people do harm the elderly. “I wouldn’t hurt my mother but at the same time people do. Some people neglect them. Some people abuse them. The same thing that they do with children,” he said. Because the elderly are often vulnerable, they face high risks of emotional, physical and even financial abuse. This abuse, though criminally equivalent to spousal or child abuse is often ignored as a private matter because the perpetrator is often a family member or a caregiver, according to the U.S. Administration on Aging. Abuse of the elderly is a wide spectrum. While some may be denied basic needs, others may be emotionally neglected, forced to stay within the home without means of socialization or deliberately made to feel like a burden. In addition to any health concerns or physical harm these conditions often lead to depression and subsequently a lower quality of life.

To keep his mother’s emotional spirits up, Alif makes special accommodations when going on vacation to ensure that

Alif noted that sometimes it’s the small things that are the toughest to deal with; the forgetfulness and the need to repeat little things over and over again. Though Alif has built his life around caring for his mother, he was not, and admittedly still, is not sure that his accommodations are the best option.

After she spent five weeks in a nursing home, Alif felt the accommodations weren’t comforting for her. The unfamiliar surroundings made it difficult for her, he said. A nursing home was a last resort, though he is not ignorant to the fact that her condition may eventually make it the only option. “Am I doing what is good or am I doing more harm [by keeping her at home], said Alif. “I’m still weighing it in my mind.” For now, Alif is committed to taking care of his mother in his home, for as long as he can. “One of the things that Allah says to do is to take care of those who are helpless,” he said. “I’m trying to earn my way to Janaah. For some of us that might be our only way.” Though still learning how to navigate the change from his childhood role of dependence on his mother, to his new role as caretaker in her time of complete dependence on him, Alif said all he knows for sure is that he never wants to live with regret, a lesson he learned as a child. “My father worked for a funeral home when I was a child. I used to ride with him. Some of the things that people would say [was that] they had regrets [about loved ones they lost]. They wish they could have done this, they wish they could have done that. They wish they had said this they wish that they didn’t say that,” he said. “As long as I know I’ve done all that I can do, then so be it. That is the reward.”

explains the religious meanings behind each of the head coverings depicted. “Through this campaign, the Center strives to foster understanding and relationships between people of various religious backgrounds,” said Marco Grimaldo, CEO and President of the Virginia Interfaith Center. “ We o f t e n f e a r w h a t w e d o n ’ t understand,” said Holly Coy, Virginia Interfaith Center Director of Programs. She said distributing these posters in such a creative way will catch people’s attention and push them to go visit the website. Through this, they will learn about different religions and rethink and preconceived religious biases. The group did a similar project where common American expressions such as “Paper or plastic” and “I’m a little tea pot…” were written in Arabic calligraphy on buses. The idea was to dispel people’s fear of Arabic and Islam. But the posters ended up scaring a lot of people, according to Coy, who explained that this showed how people feared what they did not understand. Coy said that by understanding the practices of different minority religions, people can respect them. Through education, people can see the similarities between themselves and followers of other religions. For example, the three religions shown on the posters are very different, but they all share the fact that they wear a head covering. Brad, a Christian high school student in Maryland, describes how the general public’s first reaction when they see a woman wearing a hijab is to think “terrorist.” He believes that the stereotype is so well-ingrained that this campaign won’t effectively tackle it. He says that people who have a bias against those wearing head coverings will not “go on a website that they’re prejudiced toward.” On the other hand, Puja Sood, a Hindu fourth-year medical student at the University of Rochester, said the issue can be tackled. She believes that the bias in America against Muslims is not strong enough to last forever.

People want to learn about different cultures and beliefs. As generations go on, she said, these religious biases will slowly disintegrate. But the key to this is that people must become more knowledgeable of different religious beliefs. She said a campaign like this is a great idea and can help people gain the knowledge they need to end their ignorance. “It’s a start,” says Khalid Iqbal, deputy director of the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) in Sterling,

Va. He believes that one of the key reasons people have biases against particular religions is that they are not knowledgeable enough about them. The new campaign can be effective in limiting bias against Muslims, Iqbal said, but he also feels that Muslims doing the teaching themselves would be more effective. If Muslims are proud of their identity, join politics, and do social services, people will become more knowledgeable about Islam through

this increased exposure, Iqbal said. The ADAMS Center is soon going to serve meals at a home for the elderly. Iqbal believes actions like these are the greatest way to stop religious bias. Nevertheless, Iqbal commends the efforts of the Virginia Interfaith Center and calls the campaign “a very humble beginning” in the effort to stop religious bias.

Cooperation between masjids in Maryland when it comes to summer camps is unprecedented, but there are plenty of reasons why the change is for the better.

While many women come into the program with a particular skill or talent that they wish to turn into a profitable business, some find their way to even bigger dreams. “Not only do they start a business but by going through the training and realizing their self worth, [some] have gone on to get masters degrees or higher paying jobs outside of their business,” said Lynberg. “They do various things that

they wouldn’t have done if they didn’t go through the program.” Lynberg recounted the story of one immigrant woman from Pakistan who came into the program hoping to expand on a business she ran in her home country, making scarves. By the end of the program she was pursuing a Masters degree to teach English as a second language. She is now a teacher, able to support her family and has the skill set

to help her husband manage his business. Through EWI, a profitable business that helps women live well and contribute to society is the end goal, but the journey is one based on the development of confidence. EWI is now accepting applications for their fall programs beginning in September.

“ICM was looking for someone who has done summer camps like this in the past, and who had experience in education,” said Baqai. “It’s a good idea to use experience, and also have a local masjid as a home-base.” It is also clear that ICM and DUS contribute equally to this new project. “ICM is a community that is very involved - parents are very involved in their children’s lives,” Mukhtar said. “It just needs the extra effort from the community, with the volunteer work and coming in early to set up.” The support from the community is necessary to improve the summer camp. The camp has entered its second week, and thus far things are running smoothly. “Overall it has been pretty good considering that this is the first time we’re doing it,” Baqai said. “The only challenge overall was that it was a late idea, and we put it all together very quickly.” Mukhtar, similarly, has no complaints. “The board members [at ICM] are very helpful and responsive,” she said. Considering the optimistic start, the DUS-ICM summer camp may make this summer a useful and constructive one for the Muslim youth.

felt “weird,” she said. But even though a few people stared, after a while she felt like a normal shopper. As part of the experiment, Motobar sought directions to Victoria’s Secret and Hot Topic from regular shoppers, and then she engaged the store clerks in conversation.

“The hardest part was finding the stores,” Motobar said with a laugh. This was only because the people she asked did not know the location of the stores either. Motobar said the experience felt very strange and uncomfortable for her because it was her first time ever wearing a hijab. Motobar said she felt “out of her element,” but someone wearing it full time would obviously get used to the feeling and the heat. She also said with a laugh that she “felt sacrilegious for doing it.”

Inside the stores, the clerks were very eager to help. She was treated as a normal shopper. However, there was one exception. While in Victoria’s Secret, Motobar was speaking to one female store clerk about bathing suits. A nearby male clerk, hearing Motobar’s questions, gave her a very bewildered look, she said. According to Motobar, the look on his face said, “Why do you want the bathing suits?” Motobar’s main concern was the heat.

She was not used to wearing that much clothing in the summer and felt very uncomfortable. “I was really really warm, and I was sweating a lot because it was hot,” she said. Immediately after the experiment, she asked if she could take the hijab off because she couldn’t bear the heat. After taking off the hijab Motobar said she had high respect for Ladan Mohamed because of her wearing the hijab fulltime in the summer. Motobar said she could never do that. Motobar described the experience overall by saying “it felt…normal.” She felt very accepted by the people around her. But how could a hijab-wearing Muslim woman walk around normally when it is seen as such a strange thing by society? The hijab-wearing Muslims interviewed for this story said that America has become very accustomed to seeing the hijab. According to a 2011 study by the Pew Research Center, about 430,000 Muslim women wear some form of the hijab. Mohamed said people in the area see so many Muslim women wearing the hijab that they’ve become used to it. “If they don’t understand [it], they get that it’s religious,” Mohamed said. A lot of people ask Mohamed about her hijab, not as an insult, but through honest curiosity, she said. Narmin Anwar, a data analyst who also wears the hijab full-time, said that a lot of fellow Americans “treat [her] like everyone else.” There are people with different opinions on the hijab, she said, and some look at her hijab and think, “Let me give her a chance.” But both Mohamed and Anwar acknowledged that there is also a negative side. Mohamed feels she stands out from others and is seen as abnormal. And Anwar described how some people may look at her and think “terrorist” or see her as a threat. The series has struck a nerve with the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other reputable organizations across the nation. CAIR’s Corey Saylor has called the hearing a political show “for political gain,” asking for broader, empirically-based dialogue. While King has conceded that only a small fraction of American Muslims have ties to terrorism, argues that extremists have outsized influence, citing that over 90 percent of mosques in the US are controlled by jihadists, a figure that has since been debunked. Attorney General Eric Holder has also cited that the threat of homegrown terrorism “keeps me up at night,” citing national security threats posted by Yemeni-American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, Major Nidal Hasan - the Fort Hood shooter, and failed Time Square bomber Faisal Shahzad. Scant on new data and heavy on lengthy anecdotes, the latest hearing split across party lines, with Republicans defending prior hearings and Democrats questioning their misguidance and necessity. Meant to gauge the effectiveness and impact of previous hearings, it instead dwelled upon many of the issues raised in previous hearings, suggesting the committee had not gone forward in its investigation.

In the first hearing, titled “The Extent of Radicalization in the American Muslim community and that Community’s response,” King and Muslim witnesses attested to the emerging threat of radicalization, repeatedly citing the conveyer belt model, which identifies key radicalization phases where intervention was needed. King also stated that Muslims generally were not cooperative with law enforcement officials, especially when it came to the idea of having FBI informants in masajid. His second hearing addressed radicalization in U.S. prisons, citing that many converts to Islam have been “radicalized to Islamism” and “subsequently attempted to launch terror strikes here in the U.S.” In his third hearing, King tackled the threat posed by the Somali militant group, Al-Shabaab, a group fighting with transitional Somali government for control of the country, citing that it has radicalized more than 40 Muslim Americans and 20 Canadians. His fourth hearing tackled not an outside threat, but a radicalization within the U.S. military. The counterarguments were also a rewind of previous hearings where opponents have disputed King’s central premise - that American Muslims are complicit in the radicalization of a tiny minority. King said his hearings had helped created inroads in the radicalization threat and had encouraged Muslims to come face-to-face with an emerging issue many want to ignore. “The overwhelming majority of Muslim Americans are outstanding Americans, yet the reality is that the Islamist terror threat comes from the community,” he said.

Sha’ban: The Other Month of Fasting Question: Is it mustahabb to fast the whole of Sha’baan? Is it Sunnah to fast the entire month of Sha’baan?

Praise be to Allaah. It is mustahabb to fast a great deal in the month of Sha’baan.

The apparent meaning of this hadeeth is that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast the entire month of Sha’baan.

It was narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to fast the whole of Sha’baan. Ahmad (26022), Abu Dawood (2336), al-Nasaa’i (2175) and Ibn Maajah (1648) narrated that Umm Salamah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “I never saw the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fast two consecutive months apart from the fact that he used to join Sha’baan and Ramadaan.” According to a version narrated by Abu Dawood: “The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) never used to fast any complete month in the year, apart from Sha’baan, which he

Muslim (1156) narrated that Abu Salamah said: “I asked ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) about the fasting of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and she said: ‘He used to fast until we thought that he would always fast, then he would not fast until we thought that he would always not fast, but I never saw him fast in any month more than he fasted in Sha’baan. The scholars differed as to the way of reconciling between these hadeeths. Some of them said that this had to do with differences of time – in some years the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) fasted all of Sha’baan, and in other years he fasted all of that month apart from a few days. This was the view favoured by Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him). See Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 15/416. Others said that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) never fasted any month in full apart from Ramadaan, and they interpreted the hadeeth of Umm Salamah as meaning that he fasted all of Sha’baan apart from a few days. They said that this is possible from a linguistic point of view, that if a man fasts for most of a month it may be said that he fasted the whole month.

Al-Haafiz said: The hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah explains what was said in the hadeeth of Umm Salamah, which says that he did fast any month of the year in full apart from Sha’baan which he used to join to Ramadaan; this means that he used to fast most of it. Al-Tirmidhi narrated that Ibn al-Mubaarak said: It is possible in the language of the Arabs, if a person fasts most of a month, to say that he fasted the whole month. Al-Teebi said: It may be interpreted as meaning that he used to fast all of Sha’baan sometimes and most of Sha’baan at other times, lest people think that it is obligatory to fast the entire month, like Ramadaan. Then al-Haafiz said: The former is the correct view – in other words, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) did not fast all of Sha’baan. Reaping the Benefits of Ramadan By Ali Al-Timimi In the month of Ramadan it is very important that we spend a few moments to understand some of the wisdoms and lessons that we can learn from this month of fasting. Unfortunately, many Muslims come in to this month and they are as a companion of the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: “Let it not be that the day that you fast and the day that you break fast be equal.” Meaning, one’s behavior, attitude and outlook are the same whether one fasts or not, i.e. fasting has no effect upon that person. This is why we need to reflect on some of these lessons. LESSON 1: Gaining Taqwa (piety) Allah legislated fasting for gaining

Taqwa, “O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed upon you as it has been prescribed upon those before you, so that you may attain Taqwa.” (meaning of Suraatul Baqarah (2):183) Taqwa in this case means to make a shield between oneself and Allah’s anger and Hellfire. So we should ask ourselves, when we break our fasts, ‘Has this fasting day made us fear Allah more? Has it resulted that we want to protect ourselves from the hellfire or not?

Allah has mentioned patience more than seventy times in the Qur’an and has commanded patience in more than sixteen ways in His Book. So when one fasts, and gives up one’s food and drink, and one’s marital sexual relations

for those hours, one learns restraint and patience. This Ummah needs men and women that are strong willed, who can stand upon the Sunnah and the Book of Allah and not waver in front of the enemies of Allah. We do not need emotional people, who just raise slogans and shout, but when the time comes to stand upon something firm and act, they cannot do so, they waver. LESSON 4: Striving for Ihsaan (righteousness, sincerity) and staying away from riyaa’ (showing off) Ihsaan means to worship Allah as if one seeks Him, and even though one does not see Him, He sees all. Therefore we sense possibility of unity. It is possible for Muslims to be a single body, but this will only be achieved when obedience is only to Allah and His Messenger.

It was the practice of the people of Madina that during the fast of `Aashooraa (which is now a recommended fast of one day) to get their children to fast with them. When the children would cry of hunger and thirst, their parents would distract their attention by giving them some sort of toy to play with. The children would break their fast with their parents. (as mentioned in al-Bukhaaree). So the young should be brought to the masjid and they should pray with their parents, so that they are able to get into the habit of becoming worshippers of Allah. If one does not encourage children to fast when they are young, they will find it very difficult to fast for thirty days at the age of puberty. This is why the Prophet (may Allah send His blessing and peace upon him) said, “Command your children to pray at the age of seven and beat them at the age of ten (if they do not pray.” (Haakim)
