Homegrown Extremists Tied to Deadlier Toll Than Jihadists in U.S. Since 9/11 By SCOTT SHANE

WASHINGTON — In the 14 years since Al Qaeda carried out attacks on New York and the Pentagon, extremists have regularly executed smaller lethal assaults in the United States, explaining their motives in online manifestoes or social media rants.

Community News The Fasting 5K: Low On Fuel, High on Eman By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Farhan Razi and his friends were breaking iftar at a park in Boston and discussing creative ways to give back. Later that night on a midnight bike ride they came up with the idea of combining their passion for running and raising awareness about Islam, and sharing the spirit of Ramadan. Razi along with co-founder Viqar Husain formed Fasting 5K, a unique take on the American running tradition. According to the organizers, over the last two years, F5K has raised over $45,000 for charities in the U.S. and abroad that focus on helping youth. “What started as the humble vision of one group quickly became the passionate mission of multiple communities," say organizers.

again run, walk, or stroll a 3-mile loop around the National Mall in Washington DC, starting and finishing at 3rd St NW & Madison Dr NW National Mall, Washington, DC 20216. The run starts at 7:00 p.m. and will end with iftar. Each participant is urged to raise at least a $100 for the cause. This year the group has paired up with Herndon-based FAITH’s Shaping Young Minds program. The program focuses on children ages 2-17 who are living in poverty, orphaned, or come from broken home and helps provide basic necessities and recreational activities that they wouldn't get. The program helps make lasting impressions on the young children and gives them the right tools to succeed for the future. The big question is why run while fasting a 17 hour fast?

On July 11, 2015, Fasting 5K will once

“Good energy comes…when you are doing good,” says Fakhir Ahmed, the Director of Business Development at Faith Social Services, who firmly believes that in Ramadan one should push their limits, especially if it is for a great cause. He walked the walk last year and said it was a surprisingly easy as there is no time limit. The children who are a part of the Faith program are offered opportunities while they are going through a difficult time. From shopping sprees for winter clothing to field trips, 24 activities are planned through the year. 40 percent of these children are orphans (the father is deceased or has abandoned the family). Many of these children reside with or have their living expenses paid by local Muslim families. Currently there are 105 children in the program but Ahmed estimates that the numbers will double to over 300 children. The increase in low-income families affected by the

bad economy, influx of refugees and asylum seekers, and gaps in the health care system are increasing the need by the year. “It is almost like an epidemic,” says Ahmed. This year, Fast 5K will also support Boston's ICNA Relief, Detroit's Covenant House Michigan, DC's FAITH's Shaping Young Minds Program, and SoCal's PATH. This year, their international partner is the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund. "The answer to the big questions in running is the same as the answer to the big questions in life: do the best with what you've got.” This quote is much more meaningful when you are giving up what you have for the sake of the One Who gave it to you. of the Montgomery County Council, presented the plaque to this 11 year old girl who has been seen and heard more than some of the people who are most affected by this issue.

Muslim Link Staff Reporter “Kids like big ideas, we like fairness, respect, we like equality,” said Eleanor Clemans-Cope, who circulated a petition in her school to show the same respect to Muslim holidays as they do for Christian and Jewish holy days. 170 students at Montgomery County’s Chevy Chase Elementary agreed. They rushed to sign the petition, overwhelming Eleanor with their enthusiasm.

Leventhal addressed the congregants. “I want you to listen to the example of young Eleanor and I hope all of you will be seen and heard because the government responds to the people who we see and hear,” he said.

The petition begins: “Imagine having to take an exam on Christmas or Passover!” On July 5, 2015, the Maryland chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Islamic Society of Washington Area (ISWA)

all issues that a local government will decide, he said. “I work for you, we all work for you, but if you do not participate like Eleanor Cope, then we don’t know you.” He said that when the school board received Eleanor’s petition ‘they all had to think for a moment.’ He stressed civic engagement and noted that a day will come when the Eid holiday is recognized in the county school, ‘in sha Allah’. “Montgomery County is a place where Muslims are welcomed and safe …it is a tremendous source of pride for me that all of you who could have chosen to live anywhere…like me you chose this place to be your home because we have good government because we have excellent schools, safe neighborhoods >> EQUALITY Pg 18

Get Out and Vote!! PGCMC’s Ramadan and Beyond

Call to Civic Duty By Jamil White

Muslim Link Contributing Writer The Prince George’s County Muslim Council (PGCMC) is a local non-profit grass roots organization whose mission is to promote the involvement of Muslim residents in the civic and political affairs of the County. There is no greater civic duty than participating in the election process, and the only way to participate in the election process is to make your voice heard through the act of voting. Many Muslims are apprehensive about voting, and often have concerns that government officials may not always have the best interest of the Muslims at heart. These concerns are real, but are not unique to Muslims, rather these are concerns felt by most ethnic and religious minority groups here in the United States. However, in a democratic country such as the United States, we can turn the tide and bring attention to the social and political issues that matter to us by electing officials that will sponsor and support legislation that supports our way of life. Muslims have several issues of concern for which they must have a voice if they expect elected officials to be responsive. Issues include but are not limited to: closing of the public schools on Eid holidays, the rights of Muslim students to practice their faith in the public schools, the opportunity for Muslim government workers to invest their retirement funds in halal instruments, local ordinances that

affect our religious institutions, police/ community relations, immigration policy, and civil rights policies amongst other issues. Please remember every vote counts. In 2014 primary voting, current District 2 County Councilman, Deni Taveras, defeated Doyle Niemann by a mere six (6) votes out of 4,840 votes cast. New State Delegate Erek Barron who was supported by the Muslim community won his seat over the next closest competitor by 221 votes out of nearly 36,000 votes cast. The first Muslim elected to a city council in Prince George's County was Brother Fazlul Kabir of College Park, MD. He won his first election by TWO votes. Knowing how close elections can be we should aim as a community to establish a voting bloc, which will make candidates and elected officials more responsive to our concerns. We do not have to wait very long to make an impact! Major November elections for 2016 in the State of Maryland include the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Senator Barbara Mikulski, the 4th Congressional District seat being vacated by Rep. Donna Edwards who is running for U.S. Senate and from a national perspective of course the office of the President of the United States. 2018 will be even more significant locally as the Offices of the Governor, State legislature, County Executive, County Council and the School Board. PGCMC would like to take the lead

in Ramadan, said the young men and women, who were fasting, as they stood under tents and served meals of burgers, hot dogs, cut fruits and pasta salad. Why Young Muslims Need to Vote By Naadira Aalim-Johnson Muslim Link Contributing Writer

I can still remember the day my brother turned at 18 and was legally allowed to vote. My brother did not seem to care about his new found right to vote as much as my parents did. I remember the specific moment my parents tried to tell him how important it was that he use his right to vote after he did not vote for the next president. He stated that he didn’t care for either presidential candidate or their policies and decided not to vote for either. At the time I wasn’t sure why my parents were so fervently on his case about the topic. He had given a pretty good reason for why he had decided not to vote, it certainly seemed like a much better answer then the usual reply of “I didn’t feel like it” that I had heard from a lot of other people his age.

At the time the subject of voting just seemed like something my parents were stressing over unnecessarily. At age 16, the topic wasn’t something I really cared to discuss. It wasn’t something I needed to worry about for another 2 years. Not too long ago my parents took me to see the movie “Selma”, a historical film that depicts Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s efforts in Selma, Alabama during a time where racism and segregation were rampant and African Americans were struggling for the right to vote. By the end of the film African Americans were given their right to vote and racist sheriffs and governors were voted out of their positions; positions that

Aisha Lul Ahmed was excited to read about the formation of the different masajid in country. Usman Sarwar, Vice President of MCC, led the youth on a tour of the museum after service. “I learned that there are many people in our city who do have the things that I do, not even food,” said 8-year-old Yousuf Siddiqui, who accompanied his sister Zaynub Siddiqui who serves on the board of MYO.

offices of the UK’s “Islam Channel.” I was invited to participate in one of network's most popular talk show programs (“Living The Life”). Interaction with the high octane hosts of this informative program was a real pleasure.

Muslim Link Contributing Writer

I arrived in the UK on June 2, 2015, and had the pleasure of being met at the airport by my brother in Islam, Rashid Ali. From Heathrow Airport I was taken to the British Parliament for a meeting with one of the UK's respected political leaders, “Lord Ahmed of Rotherham,” the first Muslim appointed to Britain’s House of Lords. The British Parliament, like the U.S. Congress, is comprised of two chambers; the “House of Lords” (the upper house) and the “House of Commons” (the lower legislative chamber). Our meeting and discussion, over lunch, revolved around Dr. Aafia Siddiqui and some of the challenges confronting Muslims in the West. Lord Ahmed shared the outline of a debate that he was preparing to engage in later in the day (on the floor of the British Parliament) on the growing trend of Islamophobia in the UK. I was also gratified to learn that he

has publicly raised his concerns regarding Aafia in the past, and assured me that he will continue to do so in the future. The very next morning Lord Ahmed sent me the draft of a letter that he was planning to send to the newly installed attorney general of the United States, Ms. Loretta Lynch. (After reading the letter I

thought to myself, ‘If only Muslim elected and/or appointed officials in America had the courage and presence of mind to do likewise.)

The following day witnessed the most important initiative of my five day visit. It was this initiative, spearheaded by a group of committed Muslim women, that brought me to the UK: The Walk For Freedom for Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. The initiative began with an assembly outside the Pakistani High Commission in London. It was accented by a meeting comprised of a representative delegation from our assembly, with one of the counselor officials, Zahid Ahmed Khan Jatoi (First Secretary of the political wing of the High Commission for Pakistan). The meeting went well, and was followed

At Natural Products Expo, More Companies Embracing Halal By Sarah Khasawinah

Crescent Foods engages communities through social media and by sponsoring events. During Ramadan, and throughout the year, consumers can access promotions and enter giveaways on Facebook and Twitter. Crescent Foods sponsors a number of halal fests, sports tournaments, and other events around well-being and social good. Amna Haq, Marketing Director, shared that they recently sponsored a hijab fest “to empower women to be proud to wear the hijab.” To partner with Crescent Foods, send an email to communications@crescenthalal. com two months prior to the event.

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Ramadan builds community. At sunset, families convene at the table to break fast together; students meet on campus for iftar; organizations hold fundraisers; mosques host hundreds of Muslims and friends of other faiths; and companies reach out to the public to spread the spirit of Ramadan. At the 29th annual Natural Products Expo East in September 2014, the East Coast’s largest natural, organic and healthy products event, held in the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland, halal has become a household name. With over 23,000 attendees, and 1,277 exhibitors, more and more companies are seeking halal stamps, and two extraordinary leaders in the sector have gone beyond the stamp alone: Saffron Road and Crescent Food are using halal as a means to engage communities and spread goodness. Saffron Road is a young and growing all-natural and halal certified brand that specializes in frozen and ready to eat entrees from around the world. Crescent Foods is a 20-year fixture in the halal industry that supplies premium all-natural halal chicken and beef. These companies are unique because in addition to meeting the requirements for halal, they also meet requirements

for all-natural and antibiotic-free. In the truest definition of the word halal, perhaps natural and halal ought to be one in the same: Adnan Durrani, CEO of Saffron Road, explained “For us halal is about tayyeb, what’s wholesome and pure.” Ramadan provides a special opportunity to spread the meaning of halal and engage communities. Durrani shared at Expo East in the Fall, “We were on sale for the whole month of Ramadan. We did a Ramadan theme in all our stores and Whole Foods championed it. Some stores built pillars with crescents on top.” This year, Saffron Road products are again on sale all month at Whole Foods, and can be spotted near artwork of domes, mosques,

and signs that broadcast “Ramadan!” Additionally, 5% of sales on products will go to the Whole Kids Foundation, which aims to bring vegetable gardens to underprivileged schools. The superior quality and ethics of these halal food companies shines light on the meaning of halal. Ibrahim Abed, Managing Director of Crescent Foods, said at Expo East, “Over the past year, we get less and less questions about what halal is.” The increased awareness of halal has also heightened interest; Abed explained, “Interest in halal has gone up 50% from last year. People know it’s quality and it’s healthy.”

Crescent Foods spreads the spirit of community engagement not only by providing funding and donating to social causes, but also by volunteering. To celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary, Crescent Foods organized a food pantry community service project on Saturday, June 6, 2015. Haq reflected on the experience, “Volunteering is more substantial than a monetary donation.” She explained, that “Being asked to share your time revitalizes your commitment. It gave us a chance to work with the individuals that we’re helping.” With Crescent Foods and Saffron Road providing superior products and exemplary service with a proud halal brand, it is no wonder that halal is elevating standards. Saffron Road’s Ramadan promotions end on July 14. However, the community engagement will not end—for both Saffron Road and Crescent Foods, building communities is as important as building the brand. DEADLIER

Charleston, S.C., compared with 26 by self-proclaimed jihadists, according to a count by New America, a Washington research center.

“Law enforcement agencies around the country have told us the threat from Muslim extremists is not as great as the threat from right-wing extremists,” said Dr. Kurzman, whose study is to be published by the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security and the Police Executive Research Forum.

The slaying of nine African-Americans in a Charleston church last week, with an avowed white supremacist charged with their murders, was a particularly savage case.

John G. Horgan, who studies terrorism at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, said the mismatch between public perceptions and actual cases had become steadily more obvious to scholars.

But it is only the latest in a string of lethal attacks by people espousing racial hatred, hostility to government and theories such as those of the “sovereign citizen” movement, which denies the legitimacy of most statutory law. The assaults have taken the lives of police officers, members of racial or religious minorities and random civilians.

“There’s an acceptance now of the idea that the threat from jihadi terrorism in the United States has been overblown,” Dr. Horgan said. “And there’s a belief that the threat of right-wing, antigovernment violence has been underestimated.”

>> continued from pg 1

Non-Muslim extremists have carried out 19 such attacks since Sept. 11, according to the latest count, compiled by David Sterman, a New America program associate, and overseen by Peter Bergen, a terrorism expert. By comparison, seven lethal attacks by Islamic militants have taken place in the same period. If such numbers are new to the public, they are familiar to police officers. A survey to be published this week asked 382 police and sheriff’s departments nationwide to rank the three biggest threats from violent extremism in their jurisdiction. About 74 percent listed antigovernment violence, while 39 percent listed “Al Qaeda-inspired” violence, according to the researchers, Charles Kurzman of the University of North Carolina and David Schanzer of Duke University. In the United States since Sept. 11, terrorist attacks by antigovernment, racist and other nonjihadist extremists have killed nearly twice as many people as those by Islamic jihadists.

Counting terrorism cases is a subjective enterprise, relying on shifting definitions and judgment calls. If terrorism is defined as ideological violence, for instance, should an attacker who has merely ranted about religion, politics or race be considered a terrorist? A man in Chapel Hill, N.C., who was charged with fatally shooting three young Muslim neighbors had posted angry critiques of religion, but he also had a history of outbursts over parking issues. (New America does not include this attack in its count.)

memory. But to revisit some of the episodes is to wonder why.

from Republicans, who suspected an attempt to smear conservatives.

In 2012, a neo-Nazi named Wade Michael Page entered a Sikh temple in Wisconsin and opened fire, killing six people and seriously wounding three others. Mr. Page, who died at the scene, was a member of a white supremacist group called the Northern Hammerskins.

A 2009 report by the Department of Homeland Security, which warned that an ailing economy and the election of the first black president might prompt a violent reaction from white supremacists, was withdrawn in the face of conservative criticism. Its main author, Daryl Johnson, later accused the department of “gutting” its staffing for such research.

In another case, in June 2014, Jerad and Amanda Miller, a married couple with radical antigovernment views, entered a Las Vegas pizza restaurant and fatally shot two police officers who were eating lunch. On the bodies, they left a swastika, a flag inscribed with the slogan “Don’t tread on me” and a note saying, “This is the start of the revolution.” Then they killed a third person in a nearby Walmart. And, as in the case of jihadist plots, there have been sobering close calls. In November 2014 in Austin, Tex., a man named Larry McQuilliams fired more than 100 rounds at government buildings that included the Police Headquarters and the Mexican Consulate. Remarkably, his shooting spree hit no one, and he was killed by an officer before he could try to detonate propane cylinders he drove to the scene.

Likewise, what about mass killings in which no ideological motive is evident, such as those at a Colorado movie theater and a Connecticut elementary school in 2012? The criteria used by New America and most other research groups exclude such attacks, which have cost more lives than those clearly tied to ideology.

Some Muslim advocates complain that when the perpetrator of an attack is not Muslim, news media commentators quickly focus on the question of mental illness. “With non-Muslims, the media bends over backward to identify some psychological traits that may have pushed them over the edge,” said Abdul Cader Asmal, a retired physician and a longtime spokesman for Muslims in Boston. “Whereas if it’s a Muslim, the assumption is that they must have done it because of their religion.”

Some killings by non-Muslims that most experts would categorize as terrorism have drawn only fleeting news media coverage, never jelling in the public

On several occasions since President Obama took office, efforts by government agencies to conduct research on rightwing extremism have run into resistance

William Braniff, the executive director of the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to Terrorism at the University of Maryland, said the outsize fear of jihadist violence reflected memories of Sept. 11, the daunting scale of sectarian conflict overseas and wariness of a strain of Islam that seems alien to many Americans. “We understand white supremacists,” he said. “We don’t really feel like we understand Al Qaeda, which seems too complex and foreign to grasp.” The contentious question of biased perceptions of terrorist threats dates back at least two decades, to the truck bombing that tore apart the federal building in Oklahoma City in April 1995. Some early news media speculation about the attack assumed that it had been carried out by Muslim militants. The arrest of Timothy J. McVeigh, an antigovernment extremist, quickly put an end to such theories. The bombing, which killed 168 people, including 19 children, remains the seconddeadliest terrorist attack in American history, though its toll was dwarfed by the roughly 3,000 killed on Sept 11. “If there’s one lesson we seem to have forgotten 20 years after Oklahoma City, it’s that extremist violence comes in all shapes and sizes,” said Dr. Horgan, the University of Massachusetts scholar. “And very often, it comes from someplace you’re least suspecting.”

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), during his Last Sermon in Minâ, said: “O people! Your Lord is one Lord, and you all share the same father. There is no preference for Arabs over non-Arabs, nor for nonArabs over Arabs. Neither is their preference for white people over black people, nor for black people over white people. Preference is only through righteousness.” Then he said: “Have I conveyed the message?” and the people declared that he had. [Musnad Ahmad (22391) ....

by a briefing to those gathered outside (by Sr. Yvonne Ridley and this writer); then prayer, which was followed by a mile long walk through Hyde Park that ended with a rally at the U.S. Embassy – a large, gated, imposing looking compound, with heavily armed security personnel (located at 24 Grosvenor Square, London). The rest of my UK itinerary consisted of a number of talks at different venues in Manchester and Bradford. Each presentation touched upon a different aspect of a central theme – i.e. The Challenges Confronting Muslims in the West. The itinerary included khutbahs at two different masajid (about a 30 minute drive apart) on Friday, June 5th; a presentation to a sisters group; and an interactive discussion with an assembly of youth (of different age groups) at a large Muslim weekend school. (This was my most challenging audience, by far, but it went well, Alhamdullilah!) On the day before I flew out of the country, we had a press conference at the law office of Shazia Anjum (Director/Principle Solicitor of Premium Law Solicitors LTD), where to my surprise, on a Sunday, a number of other Muslim public officials and activists came to meet me, and to receive a detailed briefing on my visit. Among those present were Afzal Khan (Member of the European Parliament for the North West); Councillor Shaukat Ali (Manchester City Council); and Raja Najabat Hussain (Chairman, Jammu & Kashmir Self-Determination Movement). The meeting/press conference, followed by lunch and off-camera discussion, went exceptionally well. Overall, I found the Muslims of the UK to be far more confident and assertive (generally speaking) than my Muslim brethren in the US. Needless to say, my first ever trip to the UK was an amazing visit that received considerable international attention. The June 3rd Aafia mobilization that took place in London received coverage in Pakistan, and shortly after my return to the states, I received a request for an interview from the South African-based,

and we appreciate when people come from interesting place,” said the County Councilman. Almost 20 years ago, Dr. Lisa ClemansCope was in graduate school in Baltimore with Farhan Hameed. Their families remained friends. Last year, she took her daughters to attend the wedding of Farhan’s sister, Hina Hameed with Raheel Baig. At the wedding, Eleanor saw Muslim marriage rituals and the congregational prayer. “That was the first time I got to see how people in my community practice their Muslim faith,” the soon to be 6th grader said to the audience at ISWA. “Just seeing the difference was a really good experience,” she said. She had heard about the Equality for Eid campaign because one of her teacher’s Ms. May ‘was on TV talking about it’. She doesn’t have Muslim friends her age at school but does in other places.

....

“We are taught in school that one of the core principles of our country is religious tolerance so it is easy for us to understand,” she said. Equality for Eid Coalition was formed to mobilize the community to seek inclusion of the Eid holidays in the Montgomery County Public Schools. MCPS board decided last year to remove all references to holy days from the school calendar. This move really brought the issue home for the Clemons-Copes, who are Unitarian Universalists. Eleanor described this decision as a “ridiculous sham because Christian and Jewish kids still get their most important holidays off — they are just not marked,” in an email accompanying the petition. The family was not expecting the media attention that came after the petition was delivered. Along with positive attention, Clemans-Cope shared that Eleanor and her school principal received anti-Muslim messages. “We received an emergency message from her principal telling us to make sure she didn’t check her email

messages. She said ‘we are proud of Eleanor and we don’t want her to feel any other way’,” said Eleanor’s mother. “I think the next step is to organize a teach-in or something at a place or many places to learn about Eid on the next Eid that’s on a school day that’s not taken off,” she said. Her mother says that Eleanor wants to work with students in other schools across the county to amplify the voice of the children who ‘get’ what many adults seem to ‘not get’: the concept of fairness and respect. Dr Clemans-Cope realizes that they have privilege and they need to use that privilege by being allies for their Muslim friends, teachers and neighbors. Tables were set with dates and fruits, ready for Maghrib time. Muhammad Yusuf Kareem, 10, of Lancaster Elementary, was attending the iftar at ISWA. The young man, who wants Eid as a school holiday, said that he wants to start a petition up at his school as well. Patricia O’Neill, Board President, told the Washington Post who first published the story, that she received the petition and

‘that the board takes public views into consideration every year when it decides calendar issues.’ Zamal Houssein, the President of ISWA, whose center was picked because it is culturally diverse, hopes that Muslim children will also follow suit and become visible in county politics. He would love to find a Muslim student who is equally active and who could lobby politicians to change the situations in their schools. “This would make the county an even better place for Muslims to live and work,” he said. He thinks that too many times Muslims have been in the background and this is a time that we need the new generation to speak up and be actively involved. An estimated ten percent of Montgomery County is Muslim. “I can’t be fully me unless you can’t be fully you,” said Eleanor as she ended her acceptance speech. “There is too much bigotry and hate in this world, and we need to all be part of the solution.”

VOTE

gave them broad authority to oppress African Americans. The movie, though heartbreaking, forced me to realize, now at the legal age to vote, why voting is so important. Voting has the ability to make change. In the aftermath of the shooting in Ferguson, Missouri’s on August, 9th 2014, the police force in Ferguson was investigated by the Department of Justice. It was revealed that police officers had “routinely violated the constitutional rights of the city's residents.” They were applying racial stereotypes and discriminating against African Americans. It was also revealed that though 70% of Fergusons population is African American, 80% of the police force was white. As surprising as this sounds there was a clear reason why: out of the 70% of African Americans living in Ferguson, only 6% were voting. When you don’t exercise your right to vote, a right that was fought and died for and is still being fought for in other countries, you are giving your power away to those who may be corrupt or indifferent to the needs of the people. To most young adults it may not seem that we have a voice; but we do have a voice, a powerful one that deserves to be heard. Your vote decides who is patrolling the streets to keep you safe. Your vote decides how are tax dollars are spent and with whom. Your vote decides who serves in Congress and the state and local governments. The laws they pass can help you or hurt you. Your vote will decide who will be our next president. I cannot stress enough how important your vote is to keep us from having another president like George Bush. We do not need another president like Bush. If you are of the legal age to vote, get registered and vote in the next election – not just in the presidential election but the local elections, too. Use your new found right to make a difference that could not only affect you but your legacy. We are the future and we owe it to ourselves to vote for people who will help better our future. Naadira is a former student of Al Huda School and Eleanor Roosevelt High School. She is entering her second year in college.

barakaat and sadaqah gets distributed in your community. Cosmetics – You can go ahead and spend six bucks on a 4-ounce bottle of lotion, or slap $20 on the counter for a swanky-looking jar of chemicals and dyes promising 20-year-old skin. Don't you know that you've got most of the healthiest, cheapest, and skin-nutritious ingredients right in your kitchen?! Get out the mayo, the olive oil, the coconut oil. Grab some cucumbers, lemons, black seed, strawberries. Got some thyme, rosemary, chamomile or peppermint? You've got the makings of moisturizers, toners and hair rinses right behind your refrigerator door. Google this stuff and you'll find tons of easy recipes for your own creams, salves, ointments and more. No chemistry degree needed. Move over Mary Kay, Maryum Kareema will be knocking at your door! Gardening – So last year your patio garden did pretty good, huh? So then you probably have zucchini coming out of your ears, and your friends have more tomatoes and peppers than they can possibly find recipes for. So have a harvest-and-seed swap. Organize your extra produce in pretty baskets, put leftover seeds in labeled snack bags and swap 'em for what you don't have. Let your friends deal with zucchini-ear syndrome next spring. Lighting – Most people think of homesteaders sitting around squinting next to oil lamps or candles trying to get chores done. A lot of us may wear glasses, but it's more a function of age than poor lighting. I would tell you to go solar like my husband and I have, but retro-fitting a house for solar after it's already been wired for the regular power grid isn't too practical or economical for most citydwellers. So chop your BGE bill with a modest investment in LED light bulbs. Replace your standard incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs all over your house. They come in many different wattages and you can even get them in warm tone, like incandescent, or cool tone, like fluorescent. And they'll practically last till your kids graduate college. Transportation – Get out of the car and onto a bike. Yes, a bicycle. Your kids ride

bikes, why not you? No, I don't suggest you pedal it along the BW Parkway to get to work. But if you've got a short errand to run not too far from your house, twowheel it instead. You save gas, get your heart, legs and lungs working, and you can finally loose weight for less than that gym membership you don't use is costing you. Nutrition – Eat better. Just plain eat better. A hallmark of homesteading is to do as Allah commands in Surat-ul Baqarah, ayat 172, “O you who believe! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided

you with, and be grateful to Allah, if it is indeed He Whom you worship.” If you can buy organic, buy it. If there's a farmers' market, shop at it. If you've got a community garden in your area, plant in it. Buy local produce grown in your state if possible rather than supporting agricultural economies far, far away. Cook fresh, from scratch, so you know what's going into you family's bellies. Really read ingredient labels. Some of them are downright hysterical, but you'll stop laughing when you see what's being passed off as food these days. If a package has more

than about 5 or 6 ingredients, and too many polysyllabic words, best to put it back on the shelf. These are just a sampling of things that can make you into a certified, city-dwelling homesteader. A lot of folks, even out here, are living “all hat and no ranch”. That may seem ingenuous, but you've got to do what you can until you have it like you want. Go forth, and may your inner-homesteader prosper.

Wal-Mart Stores East to Pay $75,000 to Settle EEOC National Origin The store manager frequently made (EEOC – June 16, 2015) The eastern division of the nation's largest retailer, WalMart Stores East, LP, will pay $75,000 and furnish significant equitable relief to resolve a national origin and religious harassment and retaliation lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal agency announced today. The EEOC charged that an asset protection coordinator, Ebrima Jallow, who is Gambian and Muslim, was harassed by the store manager at the Walmart store in Landover Hills, Md. The store manager frequently made offensive comments about Jallow's national origin and religion, including telling Jallow that he should "go back to Africa," mocking his accent, and saying that "all Muslims do is blow up buildings and people," the EEOC said in its lawsuit. The EEOC also charged that after Jallow complained about the harassment of himself and other employees and participated in investigations of discrimination, the store manager unlawfully retaliated against him, including threatening him with termination, placing him on a one-

year "coaching period" and telling other employees not to cooperate with Jallow in the performance of his asset protection coordinator job duties. Such conduct violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits harassment based on national origin or religion. Title VII also forbids employers from retaliating against employees who oppose harassment or discrimination. The EEOC filed suit (EEOC v. Wal-Mart Stores East, LP, Civil Action No. 8:13cv-02655) in U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland after first attempting to reach a pre-litigation settlement through its conciliation process. In addition to the $75,000 in monetary relief to Jallow, the 30-month consent decree resolving the lawsuit enjoins Wal-Mart Stores East, LP from any future discriminating on the basis of national origin or religion or engaging in unlawful retaliation. The company will provide training on federal laws and store policies prohibiting discrimination, harassment and retaliation to managers and human resources managers at the Walmart store where the alleged discrimination

Wal-Mart East, LP will report to the EEOC regarding any internal complaints of alleged national origin discrimination, religious discrimination or retaliation and will post a notice regarding the settlement. "Retaliation is the leading basis for charges filed with the EEOC," said EEOC Philadelphia District Director Spencer H. Lewis, Jr. "This settlement should remind all employers that if an employee complains about unlawful harassment or discrimination, the best course of action is to investigate promptly, stop any improper conduct and ensure that there

is no unlawful reprisal against employees who exercise their civil rights." EEOC Regional Attorney Debra M. Lawrence added, "Harassment based on national origin or religion simply has no business in the 21st century workplace. The EEOC is pleased that this settlement will provide equitable relief and training to prevent unlawful harassment, discrimination or retaliation." "Muslim Advocacy Group Questions House Arrest For Signal Mountain Man Charged In Threats Against Muslim Village In New York" The Chattanoogan, July 4, 2015 The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, on Saturday questioned the release of a Signal Mountain man who admitted to planning what it called

"a Charleston-style terror attack" on a Muslim community in New York. CAIR also called for stepped up protection for the community targeted in the plot. Judge Curtis Collier of Chattanooga has not yet approved a plea agreement reached between prosecutors and attorneys for Robert Rankin Doggart, an ordained minister of the Christian National Church, who admitted to plotting a massacre at a Muslim school and mosque in Hancock, N.Y., in collaboration with members of

a South Carolina militia. Judge Collier asked attorneys to submit evidence that the former District 4 Congressional candidate was involved in "a true threat." Doggart, 63, was recorded on a wiretapped phone call planning to burn down a mosque and Muslim school, while shooting anyone who tried to stop the

attackers. "Our small group will soon be >> See DOGGART Pg 28

faced with the fight of our lives. We will offer those lives as collateral to prove our commitment to our God," Doggart wrote in a Facebook post. "We shall be warriors who will inflict horrible numbers of casualties upon the enemies of our nation and world peace." "When we meet in this state, the people we seek will know who we are," Doggart said in a recorded phone call. "We will be cruel to them, and we will burn down their buildings. If anyone attempts to harm us in any way, our stand gunner will take them down from 350 yards away. The standoff gunner would be me." Doggart was arrested April 10 and charged with soliciting others to violate civil rights, attempts to damage religious property because of the religious character of the property and making threats through interstate communication. A plea deal was worked out on a charge of interstate communication of threats, but the judge has not accepted it. Federal Magistrate Susan K. Lee at first ordered that Doggart remain in jail pending the outcome of the case. Later, she said he could be on house arrest until the case is resolved. In May, CAIR called on the Obama administration to treat Doggart's planned religiously-motivated attack as an act of domestic terrorism. "It is deeply troubling that an individual who has admitted to planning a religiously-motivated terror attack on American Muslims is now free, while the intended targets of his plot remain unprotected," said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad. "We urge authorities to place Mr. Doggart in custody until this case is resolved, and failing that, to offer protection to his intended targets." He said the case is another indicator of the rise in anti-Muslim incidents nationwide.

World Press Revealed: The Role of the West In the Runup to Srebrenica’s Fall Classified documents and research show that British, American and French governments were negotiating to cede ‘safe area’ town to Serbs By Ed Vulliamy

The Guardian, July 4, 2015 The fall of Srebrenica in Bosnia 20 years ago, prompting the worst massacre in Europe since the Third Reich, was a key element of the strategy pursued by the three key western powers –Britain, the US and France – and was not a shocking and unheralded event, as has long been maintained. Eight thousand Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed over four days in July 1995 by Bosnian Serb death squads after they took the besieged town, which had been designated a “safe area” under the protection of UN troops. The act has been declared a genocide by the war crimes tribunal in The Hague, and the Bosnian Serb leaders Radovan Karadžic and General Ratko Mladic await verdicts in trials for directing genocide. Blame has also been placed on Dutch troops, who evicted thousands seeking refuge in their headquarters, and watched while the Serbs separated women and young children from their male quarry. But a new investigation of the mass of evidence documenting the siege suggests much wider involvement in the events leading to the fall of Srebrenica. Declassified cables, exclusive interviews and testimony to the tribunal show that the British, American and French governments accepted – and sometimes argued – that Srebrenica and two other UN-protected safe areas were “untenable” long before Mladic took the town, and were ready to cede Srebrenica to the Serbs in pursuit of a map acceptable to the Serbian president, Slobodan Miloševic, for peace at any price. But as they considered granting Srebrenica

to the Serbs, western powers were also aware, or should have been, of the Bosnian Serb military “Directive 7” ordering the “permanent removal” of Bosnian Muslims from the safe areas. They also knew Mladic had told the Bosnian Serb assembly, “My concern is to have them vanish completely”, and that Karadžic pledged “blood up to the knees” if his army took Srebrenica. Robert Frasure, a US diplomat working as an international representative, reported to Washington that Miloševic would not accept a peace map unless the safe areas were ceded to the Serbs. His boss, Anthony Lake, the US national security adviser, favoured a revised map that ceded Srebrenica, and the US policymaking Principals Committee urged that UN troops “pull back from vulnerable positions” – ergo, the safe areas.

France and Britain agreed, with UK defence secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind arguing that the safe areas were “untenable”, as defended in 1995. As Mladic’s troops advanced on Srebrenica, the west failed to heed warnings of the town’s imminent fall. Once it had, says General Van der Wind of the Dutch defence ministry, in an exclusive interview with the Observer, the UN provided 30,000 litres of petrol, used by the Serbs to drive their quarry to the killing fields and plough their bodies into mass graves. As the killing hit full throttle, top western negotiators met Mladic and Miloševic but did not raise the issue of mass murder, even though unclassified US cables show that the CIA was watching the killing fields almost “live” from satellite planes. The shocking findings of high-level willingness in London, Washington and Paris to cede Srebrenica were collated

How Should We Observe Eid Al-Fitr? Praise be to Allaah. The Sunnahs that the Muslim should observe on the day of Eid are as follows: 1 – Doing ghusl before going out to the prayer. It was narrated in a saheeh hadeeth in al-Muwatta’ and elsewhere that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar used to do ghusl on the day of al-Fitr before going out to the prayer-place in the morning. Al-Muwatta’ 428. Al- Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said that the Muslims were unanimously agreed that it is mustahabb to do ghusl for Eid prayer. The reason why it is mustahabb is the same reason as that for doing ghusl before Jumu’ah and other public gatherings. Rather on Eid the reason is even stronger. 2 – Eating before going out to pray on Eid al-Fitr and after the prayer on Eid al-Adha: Part of the etiquette is not to go out to pray on Eid al-Fitr until one has eaten some dates, because of the hadeeth narrated by al-Bukhaari from Anas ibn Maalik, who said that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used not to go out on the morning of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates… of which he would eat an odd number. Al-Bukhaari, 953. It is mustahabb to eat before going out to emphasize the fact that it is forbidden to fast on that day and to demonstrate that the fast has ended. Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) suggested that the reason for that was so as to ward off the possibility of adding to the fast, and to hasten to obey the command of Allaah. Al-Fath, 2/446. Whoever does not have any dates may break his fast with anything that is permissible.

It was narrated that al-Waleed ibn Muslim said: I asked al-Awzaa’i and Maalik ibn Anas about saying Takbeer out loud on the two Eids. They said, Yes, ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar used to say it out loud on the day of al-Fitr until the imam came out (to lead the prayers). It was narrated in a saheeh report that ‘Abd al-Rahmaan alSulami said, “They emphasized it more on the day of al-Fitr than the day of al-Adha.”. Wakee’ said, this refers to the takbeer. See Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 3/122/ Al-Daaraqutni and others narrated that on the morning of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, Ibn ‘Umar would strive hard in reciting takbeer until he came to the prayer place, then he would recite takbeer until the imam came out. Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated with a saheeh isnaad that al-Zuhri said: The people used to recite Takbeer on Eid when they came out of their houses until they came to the prayer place, and until the imam came out. When the imam came out they fell silent, and when he said takbeer they said takbeer. See Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 1/121 Saying takbeer when coming out of one's house to the prayer place and until the imam came out was something that was well known among the salaf (early generations). This has been narrated by a number of scholars such as Ibn Abi Shaybah, ‘Abd a l-Razzaaq and al-Firyaabi in Ahkaam al-Eidayn from a group of the salaf. For example, Naafi’ ibn Jubayr used to recite takbeer and was astonished that the people did not do so, and he said, “Why do you not recite takbeer?” Ibn Shihaab al-Zuhri (may Allaah have mercy on him) used to say, “The people used to recite takbeer from the time they came out of their houses until the imam came in.”

to Allaah be praise). It was also narrated elsewhere by Ibn Abi Shaybah with the same isnaad, but with the phrase “Allaahu akbar” repeated three times.

But on Eid al-Adha it is mustahabb not to eat anything until one comes back from the prayer, so he should eat from the udhiyah if he has offered a sacrifice. If he is not going to offer a sacrifice there is nothing wrong with eating before the prayer.

The time for takbeer on Eid al-Fitr starts from the night before Eid until the imam enters to lead the Eid prayer. In the case of Eid al-Adha, the takbeer begins on the first day of Dhu’l-Hijjah and lasts until sunset on the last of the days of tashreeq.

Al-Mahaamili narrated with a saheeh isnaad also from Ibn Mas’ood: “Allaahu akbaru kabeera, Allaahu akbaru kabeera, Allaahu akbar wa ajallu, Allaahu akbar wa Lillaah il-hamd (Allaah is Most Great indeed, Allaah is Most Great indeed, Allaah is most Great and Glorified, Allaah is Most Great and to Allaah be praise).” See al-Irwa’, 3/126.

3 – Takbeer on the day of Eid

Description of the takbeer:

4 – Offering congratulations

This is one of the greatest Sunnahs on the day of Eid because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

It was narrated in the Musannaf of Ibn Abi Shaybah with a saheeh isnaad from Ibn Mas’ood (may Allaah be pleased with him) that he used to recite takbeer during the days of tashreeq:

The etiquette of Eid also includes the congratulations and good wishes exchanged by people, no matter what the wording, such as saying to one another Taqabbala Allaah minna wa minkum (May Allaah accept (good deeds) from us and from you” or “Eid mubaarak” and other permissible expressions of congratulations.

“(He wants that you) must complete the same number (of days), and that you must magnify Allaah [i.e. to say Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar: Allaah is the Most Great)] for having guided you so that you may be grateful to Him” [al-Baqarah 2:185]

....

Allaahu akbar, Allaahu akbar, laa ilaaha ill-Allaah, wa Allaahu akbar, Allaah akbar, wa Lillaah il-hamd (Allaah is Most Great, Allaah is most Great, there is no god but Allaah, Allaah is Most great, Allaah is most great, and

>> continued from pg 30

It was narrated that Jubayr ibn Nufayr said: When the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) met one another on the day of Eid, they would say to one another, “May Allaah accept (good deeds) from us and from you.” Ibn Hajar said, its isnaad is hasan. Al-Fath, 2/446. Offering congratulations was something that was well known among the Sahaabah, and scholars such as Imam Ahmad and others allowed it. There is evidence which suggests that it is prescribed to offer congratulations and good wishes on special occasions, and that the Sahaabah congratulated one another when good things happened, such as when Allaah accepted the repentance of a man, they went and congratulated him for that, and so on. Undoubtedly these congratulations are among the noble characteristics among the Muslims. The least that may be said concerning the subject of congratulations is that you should return the greetings of those who congratulate you on Eid, and keep quiet if others keep quiet, as Imam Ahmad (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: If anyone congratulates you, then respond, otherwise do not initiate it.

5 – Adorning oneself on the occasion of Eid. It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with him) said that ‘Umar took a brocade cloak that was for sale in the market and brought it to the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and said, “O Messenger of Allaah, buy this and adorn yourself with it for Eid and for receiving the delegations.” The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to him, “Rather this is the dress of one who has no share (of piety or of reward in the Hereafter)…” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 948. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) agreed with ‘Umar on the idea of adorning oneself for Eid, but he denounced him for choosing this cloak because it was made of silk.

It was narrated that Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) had a cloak which he would wear on the two Eids and on Fridays. Saheeh Ibn Khuzaymah, 1756. Al-Bayhaqi narrated with a saheeh isnaad that Ibn ‘Umar used to wear his best clothes on Eid. So a man should wear the best clothes that he has when going out for Eid.

adorning themselves when they go out for Eid, because they are forbidden to show off their adornments to non-mahram men. It is also haraam for a woman who wants to go out to put on perfume or to expose men to temptation, because they are only going out for the purpose of worship.

With regard to women, they should avoid

It was narrated that Jaabir ibn ‘Abd-

6 – Going to the prayer by one route and returning by another.

Allaah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: On the day of Eid, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to vary his route. Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 986. It was said that the reason for that was so that the two routes would testify for him on the Day of Resurrection, for the earth will speak on the Day of Resurrection and say what was done on it, both good and bad. And Allaah knows best. [Source: islamqa.com]

Your Zakat Tells Her She is Loved...

And Not Forgotten. For us at Mercy-USA, the work we do is always about helping children and their families to find hope in what can seem like a hopeless world. Since 1988, Mercy-USA for Aid and Development has been providing humanitarian relief and development to children and their families where the need is greatest. We focus on bringing lasting and reliable help to people in some of the most dangerous parts of today’s world. Your zakat provides consistent food aid and health care in Syria, clean and safe water in Somalia, education in the Balkans, Indonesia, Lebanon, and other long term development projects around the world.

This year, your Zakat will make a real difference in the lives of so many children around the world.
