Community News ADAMS Opens Third Islamic Center

Fairfax area residents looking for a prayer location are in luck this Ramadan. The All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) announced the opening of a brand new masjid location, the ADAMS Sully Center in Chantilly, Virginia. The new center, located within walking distance from the Capital Expo Center, opened for Jumuah prayers for the first time on Friday, July 13, according to an ADAMS press release from earlier this month. Three regular Jumuah prayers will be held each Friday: one at 11:45 a.m., one at 12:45 p.m. and one at 1:45 p.m.

“There is a demand for prayer in that area,” he said. “There are families that need a community center in which they can come together five times a day.”

prayers, performed regularly each night in Ramadan, have been set up at this center as well.

The cost of the building was $1.34 million, and of that, ADAMS has managed to pay off $790,000. The remaining $550,000 is considered “Quard-Hasanah,” meaning it will be paid off in the coming years. ADAMS raised money for this location simply through donations. The announcement on the ADAMS website petitions the public to keep donating generously, in order to pay off the building and to cover operational expenses.

Is this it for expansion, or is there more planned in the future? Syed leaned towards the latter.

“We are just looking at wherever people request permanent locations,” he said.

“We are looking to establish permanent locations in whatever areas we serve.”

Dar Al-Hijrah Prays for Rain, End to Drought, Wildfires

Muslim Link Staff Reporter More than 1500 Friday attendees at the Dar Al-Hijrah mosque in Falls Church, Va., gathered for a second group prayer after the obligatory Jumah prayer on July 20, 2012. At 12:15 p.m., Sheikh Shaker Elsayed led a “rain prayer” at the mosque, to benefit those in drought-plagued areas in central and midwest United States. This prayer is known in Islam as Salatul Istisqa and the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam performed it during times of drought.

Johari Abdul-Malik, outreach director at Dar Al-Hijrah, told the Falls Church Patch that Dar Al-Hijrah is joining other religious institutions in praying for rain in countries affected by drought.

Anyone living in the mid-Atlantic and upper-east coast regions of the U.S. can confirm that the summer of 2012 has had unusual weather marked by

constant scattered thunderstorms and the occasional severe storm. However, as of mid-July, the central and midwest U.S. is parched by contrast.

“Dryness and drought, exacerbated by above-normal temperatures, have been increasing both in extent and intensity across much of the central and northern U.S.,” the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center wrote on its website. “Based upon the July 10 U.S. Drought Monitor, nearly 61% of the contiguous U.S. was in drought.”

Dar Al-Hijrah’s prayer focused more closely on wildfires in the west and southwest states.

“When we got the call from CAIR that one third of the land was burning in the west, it was a no-brainer [to make Salatul Istisqa],” Abdul-Malik said. “The reason this is the best form of help is because people are not able to put out these fires.

So it is best to ask Allah Subhanahu wa ta’aala.”

The drought is mainly being experienced in the central, midwest, deep south, and southeastern states. The drought is negatively affecting midwestern agriculture, mainly corn and soybean crops. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) asked mosques nationwide to pray Salatul Istisqa during Friday’s congregational prayer.

“We believe in the power of prayer, through which Americans of all faiths can provide a spiritual component to help relieve the nation from this crippling drought,” CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said in a press release.

Istisqa is an Arabic word which means “to ask or pray to Allah for water.” In this prayer, the imam prays, with the followers, two rak’at during any time. In the first rak’ah, the imam recites Surah al-A’la specifically after reciting Surah al-Fatihah to begin the prayer, and in the second rak’ah, the imam reads Surah alGhashiyah after al-Fatihah. A khutbah,

or sermon, is given either before or after the prayer.

As soon as the khutbah is finished, the people present should turn their outer garments around, each placing its left side on his right side and its right side on his left, face the qiblah, supplicate to Allah and raise their hands while doing so. One may also make a supplication for rain without it being Friday and regardless of whether or not the prayer takes place inside or outside the mosque.

It is commendable to repent before Salatul Istisqa.

Salatul Istisqa is a fairly uncommon prayer in the D.C. area, but Abdul-Malik stressed it’s importance.

“In the past, there have been national days of prayer for disasters and crises, but this is the first time for rain that I know of,” he said. The mosque is open to holding such a prayer again. “If the need requires it, of course.”

Germantown Masjid Site Plan Receives County Approval

Muslim Link Staff Reporter The DC area is familiar with the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring, Maryland and the Islamic Center of Maryland in Gaithersburg. But a new building for the Muslim community will be arriving at the hands of the Islamic Society of Germantown. ISG has been working on this building project for the past 14 years, and it was finally on July 12th, that the hearing board at the Montgomery County Department of Park and Planning approved the ISG masjid site plan.

ISG hosts jummah prayers at two locations in Germantown and Gaithersburg with over 150 people attending, they host daily Fajr and Isha services at the Iman Learning Center, they hold halaqahs and a Sunday school at the local Fox Chapel School, and serve iftaars during Ramadan at the Germantown Boys and Girls club. Mohamed Ibrahim, the ISG

secretary, said that they recently had to lay down extra mats during jummah to account for the growing number of people. With the amount of Islamic services they offer for the local Muslim community, one would be surprised that they have no central masjid.

The idea behind the ISG masjid was to provide a place for the Germantown Muslim youth to call home. Ibrahim said that building this masjid is, “All about education.” He expressed that through the ISG masjid the Muslim community can properly educate the youth about Islam, the Qur’an, and prepare them with the right tools for life. Another goal for the ISG masjid is to provide a place where the Germantown Muslim community can come together. Ibrahim said that the masjid will build and strengthen the Muslim community by helping Muslims in need.

For the Germantown Muslim the choice of an Islamic center would be either

in Gaithersburg 20 minutes away, or Frederick 40 minutes away. While these locations are not too far, they keep many Muslims in the community away from being regular mosque goers.

Additionally the Muslim community in Germantown has been growing rapidly.

“Germantown is a growing suburb and this is reflected in the growing community of Muslims here.” Says Yehia Hassanein an active member of the ISG community. One Muslim resident of the area, Ikram Hasan Khan, notes that since the 1980s, the Muslim community in the area has been growing 20 percent each year. With the number of Germantown Muslims growing so fast, a local masjid is becoming more and more of an exigency.

ISG expresses that they intend to work with other mosques, such as ICM and MCC, to strengthen the Muslim community as a whole. Ammar Najjar, Imam and project manager of ISG, said that ISG will work together with other

mosques for, “the benefit of the Muslim community at large.”

The masjid will be a three floor building built from scratch on a vacant lot. The first floor, reserved for the brothers, will contain an assembly hall for 150, a meeting room, a shoe room, and a masjid bookstore. The second floor, for the sisters, will have a prayer room for 100, a workout room, and four classrooms.

The 3rd floor, the basement, will serve as an “all purpose room” with two separate areas for brothers and sisters and a full kitchen. The masjid will be located in Germantown just off of route 355 and will neighbor Fox Chapel Shopping Center.

Najjar notes that because, “we are human,” we often want things done as fast as possible. He explained how Muslims in the community have commented that by now 1,000 mosques could have been built in other countries. Najjar said that >> approval Pg 30

ISB Summerfest Provides Pre-Ramadan Fun, Shopping

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Excitement was in the air as the annual Islamic Society of Baltimore (ISB) Summerfest began on Saturday, July 14, 2012. The summer sun beamed down on the crowds as they arrived in droves to enjoy another year’s sultry, boisterous day of fun. The voices of children were prominent as they enjoyed the many games offered this year, and the smells of rice and meat from the kabob vendors permeated the air.

Advertising also took a primary role in the success of Summerfest. Organizers and volunteers took to social media; the event was publicized on Facebook, and weekly ISB Flash emails were sent out to the community mailing list.

Summerfest postcards were sent to other masajids as well.

The event was packed with attendees throughout the day, and organizers estimated an attendance of between 2,500 and 3,000 people.

Humaira Haq, a volunteer at Summerfest, filled in whenever and wherever necessary, selling food and making sure attendees were able to enjoy the activities. On the whole, she enjoyed Summerfest, and doesn’t regret her decision to volunteer there.

“Overall, the Summerfest was amazing, like every year,” she said. “There are many activities for kids and adults to engage in, and it’s not only for Muslims, everyone’s welcome.”

Tolu Alegbeleye, a non-Muslim visitor at Summerfest, wholeheartedly agreed, and had nothing but praise for this year’s Summerfest.

“I loved Summerfest,” she said, “It’s Islam-oriented of course but if you’re not a Muslim you’re still just as welcomed to attend. The atmosphere was very warm and friendly plus the games and activities were awesome. I had a wonderful experience that I hope to repeat in many years to come.”

Outside, the wide variety of games available kept children entertained.

Choices included a 5-person rock wall, a wrecking ball ride, bumper cars, laser tag, an obstacle course, moon bounces, a pedestal joust, a bungee run, carnival games and horse rides. There were new additions as well: a gaming truck, along with the 18-person Wrecking Ball Ride.

Interscholastic Tournament (MIST) performed at the mic, delivering their spoken word poems and nasheeds to the people eating in the shade. Food was provided by the ISB youth - who had sold drinks, samosas, and Jamaican beef patties - or was available from a variety of food vendors from around the area.

These elaborate accommodations required equally elaborate planning.

“We began planning in the beginning of May,” said Fatima Husain, an organizer of the Summerfest. “Immediate priorities included figuring out whether or not the regular barbecue was going to be done and if not, then food vendors would need to be organized, which they were in the end. Also, calling the bazaar vendors and making sure that the rides and entertainment would be bigger and better than ever.”

To escape from the suppressing heat outside, people could go to the bazaar, housed in the air-conditioned ISB gymnasium. “I was co-organizing the Bazaar with Khadeeja Alavi,” said Husain, “Khadeeja and I would call/ email the vendors and try to get the best of the lot to come out and sell their goods at the festival so that the shoppers would be able to get all of their Eid shopping done in time.” There was a huge variety of merchandise available, from toys, abayas, and scarves to henna, scarf pins, and jewelry; interested customers crowded around each table.

“Anyone who wanted to set up a stall in the Bazaar needed to print and fill out the application form that was on the ISB website, or email it to the ISB office,” said Husain. “The fee for one standard table was $80 and super vendors paid $250. The merchandise could be anything as long as it was not food related. All food vendors were handled separately from the vendors in the Bazaar.”

Fatima Husain believes that this year’s event has been a success; she told us optimistically, “I think all of us organizers have a common goal: to make sure that everyone has a good time. I dothink that everyone who came left happy and on full stomachs. We can only pray that Allah Subhanahu wa ta’aala blesses us with continuing success as the years progress, insha’Allah.”

IRHSCA Hosts Honor Dinner for Local Islamic Institutions, Activists

By Muslim Link Staff Reporters Respect, tolerance, and collaboration was the theme of the evening for the 12th annual fundraising dinner for the Islamic Research & Humanitarian Service Center of America located in Capital Heights, Maryland.

The July 14, 2012 fundraising dinner reflected the theme well, since IRHSCA (pronounced “ehr-ha-sa”) incorporated an honor awards ceremony to recognize the achievements of several Islamic organizations, Muslim community

members, and local leaders for their community work.

About 200 community members attended the event, held at Suitland High School.

Brother Talib Abdus-Samad, a member of IRHSCA’s board, served as the master of ceremonies, saying that IRHSCA is “all about respect and collaborating with other organizations.” IRHSCA Imam AbdulRahman Yaki conducted the fundraising, saying the first priority was to raise money to purchase the building IRHSCA occupies. At their last fundraiser held in

2010, IRHSCA raised about $36,000.

Talib Abdus-Samad said IRHSCA needs $6,000 per month to operate.

Dinner was provided by Sweet Tooth Cakes & Pastries, a popular business owned by brother Steve Thomas, a reluctant recipient of a community service award from IRHSCA. Thomas’ family also received recognition for their support of Thomas’ community activism. Talib Abdus-Samad received a surprise award from members of IRHSCA, despite his insistence that he not be recognized.

Capitol Heights Mayor Kito Jones was also presented with an award for his inclusive leadership. Jones appreciated IRHSCA’s message of respect, tolerance, and collaboration, and said “it applies to our town” and that Capitol Heights residents must “move forward in unity”.

Entertainment was offered in the form of spoken word poetry by Muslim InterScholastic Tournament winners Naeem Baig and Azizah Abdul-Samad, as well as a nasheed from the students of the IRHSCA weekend school.

Dar-us-Salaam Imam Safi Khan (far right) receives the “excellence in education” award on behalf of Al-Huda School. The accredited pre-K through 12th grade school is widely recognized as one of the best full-time Islamic schools in the nation. Imam Safi recounted some of the achievements of the school, saying “with a little effort we can achieve a lot if we just start with ‘bismillah’.” At the podium is IRHSCA’s Imam Abdul-Rahman Yaki.

Muslim Link Staff Reporter As the month of Ramadan slowly swings in, so does the time for giving in charity. On Sunday July 15th 2012 eight Muslim volunteers decided to donate and serve dinner to the Central Union Mission homeless shelter in Washington D.C. The dinner was a joint effort with Muslims from Ibn Taymiyyah, PGMA, and ISB. This shelter visit is part of many the volunteers have done and wish to continue doing.

5 trays of baked chicken, 4 trays of rice pilaf, 200 pieces of pita bread, 3 trays of salad, and plenty of chocolate chip and oatmeal raisin cookies for desert. That was the gracious menu the Muslims offered the homeless shelter on Sunday. Some shelter patrons joked, “we are happy to see you, but much happier to see the delicious food.” The shelter does not usually allow seconds, but because the supply was so plentiful, everyone in the shelter was able to receive seconds and even thirds. But surely something like this would be very expensive?

The organizers of this event explained that money wasn’t a problem because all the food was donated and cooked by volunteers. One family, who asked to remain anonymous, was gracious

enough to prepare the entire dinner. In a previous visit, RJ’s Café volunteered to cook the food. The event e is run completely by volunteers donating their time to prepare for, organize, and work at these visits. Even though the visits take about a week’s preparation, the volunteers always enjoy them.

“For me, I feel it is an obligation as a Muslim to help the less fortunate.” Said Irfan Aziz, a volunteer of the shelter visits, “The various Quranic verses and Ahadith enjoining charity are what resonated and drove us to volunteer.”

Aziz explained how in the past he had worked with many organizations such as the Muslim Coalition of Connecticut and Monday Night Mission. He said these organizations would make an effort to do regular shelter visits and to serve food to the homeless. Aziz called the experiences, “gratifying and humbling.” When he moved to into the area he decided to organize a way for

the Muslim community to get the same experiences.

The shelter that the volunteers donated to, Central Union Mission, is a Christian faith based organization that seeks to rehabilitate the needy through spiritual means. Their current program serves homeless men, underprivileged women, children, seniors, veterans and the growing Hispanic community. It is one of the oldest and most successful social service agencies in Washington D.C. But where is the Muslim equivalent of this?

Aziz explained how the Muslim community is very behind in this area.

Bashar, a volunteer at the event, explained how it was disheartening to see how the Muslim community wasn’t doing it’s job to help needy people like the shelter was. Bashar explained, “We have a lot to do to catch up in those places.” Aziz hopes to continue regularly visiting and donating food at Central Union Mission, but he also hopes to one day open a Muslim homeless shelter.

The volunteers were able to serve over 125 people at the visit and everyone was able to eat to their heart’s content. Aziz believes that visits like these always, “remind one of the many luxuries they possess but may take for granted.”

Zakat Foundation Answers the Call of Syrian Refugees

Feras said that some of these families are vulnerable to abuse because they have no status in the country, and also because of their fear of reprisals from supports of the Assad regime. In fact, very few photos of the Syrian refugees circulate in the media because of fears of retaliation from Assad supporters who operate among the refugees.

From the beginning of the political unrest in Syria which started in March 2011, US based international charity Zakat Foundation has been providing humanitarian assistance to Syrians displaced by the worsening civil war between the Assad regime and the Free Syrian Army.

Despite the risks that come with humanitarian help in times of political unrest – especially when many of the aid recipients are government protesters – Zakat Foundation was able to deliver medical aid, food packages, and clothing to thousands of Syrians using its network of volunteers established prior to the beginning of the Syrian spring events.

While the number of people in need for humanitarian assistance has risen from 1 million to 1.5 million according to United Nations, the situation of the refugees seems to get less attention than the political turmoil inside Syria. Most of the media focuses on the images of bombs falling on buildings and street protests while a real humanitarian crisis is taking places at the borders of Syria and its neighboring countries like Turkey, Iraq, and Lebanon. Tens of thousands of families have been driven out of their homes by indiscriminate shelling by government forces on residential areas, hitting apartment

buildings, schools, and masajid.

Because hospitals are overwhelmed or damaged, hundreds of wounded civilians are forced to seek medical attention in neighboring countries.

Feras Abdelrahman, a program coordinator for Zakat Foundation, estimates the number of people who crossed the borders to be more than 50 people a day. In response to the this large influx, Zakat Foundation opened field offices in Lebanon, Jordan, and Turkey. According to the Illinois based charity, the number of refugees in these countries exceeds 250,000. Jordan alone counts over 200,000. since this report – TML] While the Turkish government showed flexibility in dealing with its 24,000 refugees by allowing in nongovernmental relief organizations, the refugees in Jordan and the 30,000 in Lebanon don’t have refugee status. Many speculate that the two governments don’t want to grant the Syrian refugees asylum for fear of attracting even more refugees, increasing the chances of internal conflicts similar to the ones that happened as a consequence of the Palestinian refugee influx in the 1970s and 1980s.

Yet as the international community continually fails to take immediate action, another power within Syria is incrementally improving and gaining a stronghold on several cities in Syria: the Free Syrian Army (FSA).

The FSA, comprised of mainly defected military personnel, recently dealt a serious blow to the Syrian regime. On Wednesday, July 18, as the conflict had escalated in Damascus, Syria’s capital and one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world, Syrians worldwide rejoiced at the news of the death of four security aides and members of President Bashar Al-Assad’s inner circle. Among the killed in the bombing of the National Security building, reported Syrian State media, were Defense Minister Dawoud Rajha and his deputy Assef Shawkat - Assad’s brother-in-law, the Interior Minister Mohammad Shaar and the Assistant Vice President, Hassan Turkmani. The FSA later released a statement claiming responsibility for the attack.

While rumors quickly began spreading about who plotted the attack and who were among the dead, two things were certain: that the embattled president was quick to escape – now assumed to be in the city of Latakia- and while weakened, the regime was not going to easily give up control of the country. The attack took place two days before the arrival of the Holy month of Ramadan and since then, Assad military forces and thugs, known as Shabiha, have begun retaliating, indiscriminately killing between 150-200 people daily since.

Yet while the violence continues to escalate, the resolve of Syrians, home and abroad, has not wavered and they now believe, more than ever, that the regime’s end is within sight. More defections, especially of high officials, are taking place and people are becoming more vocal over the atrocities committed by the regime.

“The death of the senior regime officials represents a huge blow to Assad and his remaining cronies, and indicates that the regime’s collapse is imminent,” said Rafif Jouejati from McLean, Va., spokesperson for the Local Coordination Committees of Syria. “The civil resistance movement in Syria has been re-energized. Abroad, more Syrians are speaking out in favor of the opposition and more former regime supporters are switching sides as they watch the Assad ship sink before their eyes.”

“The most recent developments in Damascus have appeared to be the tipping point leading to further advancements for the revolution,” said another vocal activist from Columbus, Ohio. Kamal Haykal, founder of the Syrian Sun, a bilingual online newspaper believes the attack has begun “exposing the vulnerabilities of the regime.”

Many proponents of freedom and regimechange only began voicing their opinions when the first tanks began rolling into Daraa, the city now known as the birthplace of the revolution- several people opposed the regime before then, but within the privacy of their homes. Racan Alhoch, resident of Wayne N.J., and his family have always been against the regime, but according to him, he began aiding the revolution around July of 2011 after footage of two-year-old Oula Jablawi revealed she had been shot in her eye.

“We must be ambassadors for our cause,” he said, “spread awareness, and let those inside know we are thinking of them constantly.”

Syrians in the United States have come to feel it is their duty to publicly speak out and garner as much attention as possible in hopes of bringing awareness to the American public. Yet with a government as vindictive as the Assad regime, being vocal only meant putting loved ones in Syria in danger of torture, abuse and death.

A price, many have said, they have become willing to pay because “the situation in Syria transcends personal fears,” explained Jouejati.

Sawsan Jabri, a board member of the Syrian Expatriates Organization living in Michigan, feels that there is no longer a need to “monitor our activism.” “Assad is targeting everyone, not only the active... they kill infants, kids, and seniors.” While some activists were forthright with their identities from the beginning, others gradually overcame their fears. Haykal only became forthcoming, he said, after constantly watching unarmed Syrians “bravely confront tanks and armies.”

Activists understand the risks but believe fighting for freedom and justice “is a cause that is much bigger than ourselves,” said Alhoch. “The blood of my family is not worth more than any other Syrians’ blood.”

However, as Syrians abroad continue to aid in the fight for freedom, thousands inside are trying to escape from the violence, seeking refuge in neighboring countries as the situation continues to deteriorate rapidly. The United Nations currently places the number of refugees that have openly sought help at around 112,000.

Jouejati characterizes the situation in Syria as “devastating for all,” both pro and antiregime forces alike. The dire humanitarian situation and ongoing violence, she said, has created a “state of panic and fear” among all Syrians.

Yet, while the FSA continues to grow, its members still lack sufficient coordination and adequate weapons to protect against ground and air troops. Without the necessary help, the battle for their liberation is only drawn out and will only yield more victims.

This has only lead Syrians in America to express their discontent with the minimal and inadequate help the U.S.

has provided. “The situation in Syria has reached genocide-like proportions and the world community has a moral responsibility to ensure that world citizens are not butchered,” said Jouejati. As Assad continues to lose control, many Syrians living in America are expecting the U.S. to provide medical and humanitarian aid, as well as “do all it can, short of [putting] boots on the ground, to put an end to the killing,” said Jouejati.

However, with the limited assistance and increased violence, more and more Syrians are either joining the FSA or supporting their efforts, because they have come to realize that help will only come from within. “I don’t expect anything from anybody,” said Alhoch after “witnessing so much bloodshed.

This is an atrocity and a black mark on all of humanity and it is a prime example of how disconnected all people have become from one another… The people on the inside are the ones who will get the job done. Unfortunately, armed resistance is the only route Assad has left us.”

Despite the fact that the FSA still needs to improve its coordination, Heba Fesal, a member of the SEO and the Syrian Sun living in Ohio, believes that their “efforts and strategies will evolve.”

It is still unclear just how and when Assad will fall, but Syrians are certain that the end is near. Some have speculated that the toppling of the regime will come by way of the FSA as they have begun to gain control of cities all over Syria. In the past few days, the FSA has already won control over several border points with Turkey and Iraq, cities in the suburbs of Damascus, and some control over the largest city in Syria, Halab.

And while many victims would love to see Assad persecuted and held accountable for his crimes, a few have also come to agree on allowing him to safely step down and flee, if that should end the killing, especially now that many fear the government will resort to the use of chemical weapons. Recently, the Arab League offered Assad and his family “safe passage” from Syria; however he rejected the offer, leaving Syrians the only option of forcibly bringing down the regime from the inside.

It might take some time, said Fesal, but the “Syrian people are hungry for freedom and will get it sooner or later.”

According to the Washington Post, Arizona, the state with the most illegal immigrations over the Mexico and United States border, had an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants in April of 2010.

Due to the growing Hispanic population, increased drug and human trafficking related violence, and economic struggles, many in the state called for some sort of legal action on immigration.

Locally known as being a strong opponent against illegal immigration, Arizona state Sen. Russell Pearce became the majority sponsor of the bill. Pearce successfully fought for other anti-immigration laws in the past and now sought to pursue state enforced federal immigration laws.

The drafted bill quickly gained support and passed through the Arizona state Senate in February of 2010 and the House of Representatives on April 13, 2010. It then went to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, who, on April 23, 2010 signed the bill.

Throughout all of this, there was much debate and activity over the bill, both for and against it. During the signing, thousands gathered at the Arizona Capitol to either condemn or support the proposed bill. The intensity of the debate even caused some violence.

Soon, the bill traveled up to the United States Supreme Court in the now famous Arizona v. United States. By a 5-3 majority the Court struck down many provisions of the bill but kept the arguably most controversial one. The provision that allowed for police to investigate the immigration status of a person based on reasonable suspicion, and allegedly racial profiling, was upheld.

But in order for the bill to become state law the lower courts’ preliminary injunction, which is what stops the bill from going into effect until the courts decide the issue is resolved, must be lifted. The bill will now go through the lower courts and the result of their decisions will decide when, if ever, the bill will become law.

SB 1070 has met much opposition from Latino Americans. According to the Pew Hispanic Center, over half of all Ameri-

can Latino adults worry about themselves, family members, or friends being deported. That is because many Latinos are in the United States illegally. In 2011, according to the Arizona Daily Star, 91 percent of all U.S. deportations were of people from Latin American countries.

Because of these struggles, the Latino community is against stricter immigration laws like SB 1070. According to an AP-Univision poll, 67 percent of Latinos said they were opposed to it with an outstanding 60 percent saying they were strongly opposed. The Latino community, all across the nation, has been campaigning and speaking out against the controversial bill.

Affad Shaikh, an American Muslim blogger, also spoke out against this bill.

He described the bill as the new “Chinese Exclusion Act” and declared that it will have a huge impact on the Muslim community.

In Arizona the effects of this are being strongly felt. The Latino community felt that a local sheriff, Joe Arpaio, was racially discriminating against them, and so decided to file a lawsuit. In a mass e-mail, Letty Ramirez of the group No Papers No Fear announced that he, along with other illegal immigrants, will be coming out of the shadows to voice their grievances during the case. Ramirez said that SB 1070 is what pushed him to get involved.

Jamil Dasti, the imam of the Islamic Center of Maryland in Gaithersburg, described his concerns about illegal immigration. He explained how if a Muslim were to be an illegal immigrant in this country, they would need to lie and deceive to live here. He believed that according to Islam, illegal immigration is a problem. As to how America should deal with the problem, Dasti said that the U.S. government is trying to deal with it and is doing what they can. But he said that he could not comment on what the best solution to the immigration issue would be.

Ramirez and other illegal immigrants will be telling their stories outside the courthouse during the trial on July 24th 2012. The trial ended after The Muslim Link’s press deadline.

“I knew we had to do something,” read his email. “I’m tired of living in fear.”

Now, it seems that many states are attempting to pass similar bills like SB 1070. The question is what is the impact, if any, of this on the Muslim community?

The bill seems to bother Latino Americans, but should the Muslims be worried too?

Many Muslim leaders, writers, and organizations have made their opinions and concerns about this bill known. The California Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) calls on American Muslims to contact Arizona Gov. Brewer and speak out against the bill. CAIR said that the bill calls for racial profiling and that American Muslims have experienced the negative effects of this in the past.

“Racial profiling is ineffective policing which will build distrust and fear of law enforcement in the community,” CAIR California said in a statement on their website.

“Muslims will wonder, so what does this have to do with me?” he said.

He answers by saying that Muslims will be in danger due to this law because people naturally assume them to look like “terrorists.” Muslims will not be safe even if they are legal because they will be stopped based on their race and forced to prove their citizenship, he said.

The bill has also made its way to the thoughts of every day Muslim American citizens. Dr. Anwar Karim, an engineering project manager, said that this law is “not good for America. It will scare the immigrant population.” He believes strict anti-immigration laws like this can hurt not only the Latino community, but the Muslim community as well. Karim also says that he knows some illegal immigrants and they do not feel good about this bill. Karim believes that the existing system for becoming a legal American citizen is not sufficient and that changes should be made to it. He said the best action for the issue of immigration right now is to speak out against this bill.

Hadi Quaiyum, a Prince George’s County engineer, also believes that this bill is a bad idea. “[The bill allows] police to retain any individual based on their discretion,” Quaiyum said. “The individual would be under their custody with no known criminal record.”

He said that this would allow police to hold someone “under custody with no apparent reason.”

But Quaiyum made it clear that he does not support illegal immigration. He explains that illegal immigrants should not be allowed to enter the country and that the United States should have the right to deport them. He says that the U.S. supports many amnesty programs for immigrants to legally seek refuge in America from their own oppressive countries, so he sees no reason to come here illegally.

He believes that the country is doing a lot to ensure that immigrants can enter and stay legally in the country, examples of these efforts being the lottery visa, work authorization, HI visa, and family visa.

But, he also says, the process needs to go faster.

Mohamed Hakim, a construction engineer, supports the bill. He believes that the law is “good for America” and that it will help clear the illegal population in the country. He says that the bill will not affect the Muslim community because most Muslims are legal. He feels that the current American system of becoming a citizen is sufficient and that illegal citizens should be deported to “make space for legal citizens.” Hakim believes SB 1070 should be kept in full.

In April, the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) signed a document, with about 50 other religious groups, urging the Supreme Court to fully overturn the SB 1070 bill. MPAC states that they support the notion of “justice for all” and will continue to work with groups who try to establish a more “just, humane and effective immigration system.”

The Muslim community’s opinion on the issue is very mixed, which reflects the feelings of Arizona and the rest of the country. A July 2010 Rasmussen Poll showed that 46 percent of Arizonians said the bill had a negative impact while only 40 percent said it was positive. A December 2011 poll conducted by the Alabama Education Association showed that 55 percent of voters wanted the bill to be revised or repealed. Generally, many do believe that the bill, as it currently stands, can hurt the nation. In the months to come, different groups will surely speak out for or against it. And if the bill is officially enforced, the country will see whether or not it really is something to fear.

In the New Egypt, Beards Appear Where They Were Once Banned

All over the country, Muslim men are demanding to wear beards — and Muslim women the hijab hair covering — in police stations, banks, airliners, television news programs and other places where they have long been banned by law or custom.

“All of a sudden, the grip of the state is gone,” said Ziad Akl, a political sociologist at the Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies. “There is a lot of Islamophobia in Egypt because Mubarak not only cracked down on Muslims, he created an image of them as devils.”

Now Mubarak is gone, and Muslims have more room to express themselves. “But a lot of secular people who still fear the Islamization of society are seeing beards in more and more places,” Akl said.

Perhaps the most shocking place to see facial hair is in the presidential palace. Mohamed Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood candidate who assumed

Egypt’s highest office last month, is not just the first democratically elected president whom living Egyptians have seen — he’s also the first bearded one.

“As Muslims, when we see President Morsi, we feel just as the black people of the United States feel about Barack Obama,” said Ali el-Banna, a lawyer and Brotherhood supporter. “Here is somebody who looks like me, who represents me. We had never had that before.”

Colorado Muslims Wonder If Theater Shooter Might Have Been Noticed

The Denver Post, July 23, 2012 In 2009, Najibullah Zazi sent three e-mails from his Aurora apartment to a suspected terrorist in Pakistan asking about the ingredients necessary to bake something for an upcoming marriage.

Within hours, the Federal Bureau of Investigation was on to him.

Agents monitored his calls. They followed him across the country. They became particularly alarmed when they learned he had purchased large quantities of hydrogen peroxide, a hair dye.

Almost three years later and 15 miles away, James Eagan Holmes was filling his home with armament. He had regular deliveries of ammunition for a militarystyle AR-15 rifle, two handguns and a shotgun he purchased over the course of 60 days. Since the disorder of the heart cannot be rectified except by turning to Allah the Most High, and its disorder will be increased by eating and drinking too much, mixing with the people excessively, speaking profusely and sleeping too much. These will cause it to wander into every valley, and cut it off from its path to Allah, weaken it, divert it or put a halt to it.

“From the Mercy of the Mighty and Most Merciful is that He has prescribed for them fasting , which will cut off the excesses of eating and drinking, and empties the heart of its desires which divert it on its journey to Allah the Most High. He prescribed it in due proportion as will be appropriate and will benefit the servant, with regard to this world and the Hereafter, and does not harm him, nor damage what is beneficial for him.

“He also prescribed i`tikaf for them, by which is intended that the heart is fully occupied with Allah the Most High, the Most High, concentrated upon Him alone, and cut off from preoccupation with the creation. Rather it is engrossed with Him alone, the One free of all defects, such that remembering Him, loving Him and turning to Him takes the place of all anxieties of the heart and its suggestions, such that he is able to overcome them.

Thus all his concerns are for Him. His thoughts are all of remembrance of Him, and thinking of how to attain His pleasure and what will cause nearness to Him. This leads him to feel contented with Allah instead of the people, so that prepares him for being at peace with Him alone on the day of loneliness in the grave, when there is no one else to give comfort, nor anyone to grant solace except Him. So this is the greater goal of I’tikaf” I`tikaf is the seclusion and staying in the mosque with the intention of becoming closer to Allah. This was the practice of the Prophet, salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam during the last ten days of Ramadan especially. He would do it during other months as well.

Aishah radhiya Allahu ‘anha reported that the Messenger of Allah, salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, used to practice I`tikaf in the last ten nights of Ramadan and used

to say, “Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of the month of Ramadan” [Bukhari] Abu Hurairah radhiya Allahu `anhu , radiyallahu ‘anhu said: “Allah’s Messenger, salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, used to perform i`tikaf for ten days every Ramadan, then when it was the year in which he was taken (died), he performed I`tikaf for twenty days." [Bukhari] Aishah radhiya Allahu ‘anha reported that the Prophet,salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, used to practice I`tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan till he died and then his wives used to practice I`tikaf after him. [Bukhari] `Aishah radhiya Allahu `anha also reported that the Prophet, salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, “Used to perform i’tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan until Allah the Mighty and Majestic, took him.

[Bukhari and Muslim] Al-Bukhari records from Abu Said that the Prophet (S) said: “Whoever makes I`tikaf with me is to make I’tikaf during the last ten (nights).”

This Sunnah of the Prophet, salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, has been abandoned by many Muslims and it is worth reviving it in this era.

Sayyid Sabiq says in Fiqhus-Sunnah : The sunnah or preferred i`tikaf has no specific time limit. It can be fulfilled by staying in the mosque with the intention of making i`tikaf for a long or short time.

The reward will be according to how long one stays in the mosque. If one leaves the mosque and then returns, he should renew his intention to perform i’tikaf.

Ya’la ibn Umayyah said: “I secluded myself in the mosque for some time for I`tikaf.” ‘Ata told him: “That is I`tikaf, as long as you secluded yourself there.”

One who is performing Sunnah (like in Ramadan) i’tikaf (i.e. not the obligatory one that is made after a vow) may end his i`tikaf at any time, even if it is before the period he intended to stay.

Aishah radhiya Allahu ‘anhah related that if the Prophet intended to make i’tikaf, he would pray the morning prayer and begin it. One time he wanted to make i`tikaf during the last ten nights of

Ramadan, and he ordered his tent to be set up. Aishah reported: “When I saw that, I ordered my tent to be set up, and some of the Prophet’s wives followed suit. When he [the Prophet] prayed the morning prayer, he saw all of the tents, and said: “What is this?” They said: “We are seeking obedience (to Allah and His Messenger).” Then he ordered his tent and those of his wives to be taken down, and he delayed his i`tikaf to the first ten days (of Shawwal).”[Bukhari] The fact that the Messenger of Allah ordered (his and) his wives’ tents to be struck down and (he himself left and) asked them to leave the i`tikaf after they have made the intention for it shows that they discarded the i`tikaf after they had begun it.

It is preferred for the one who is making i`tikaf to perform many supererogatory acts of worship and to occupy himself with prayers, reciting the Qur’an, glorifying and praising Allah, extolling His oneness and His greatness, asking His forgiveness, sending salutations on the Prophet, upon whom be peace, and supplicating Allah - that is, all actions that bring one closer to Allah. Included among these actions is studying and reading books of tafsir and hadith, books on the lives of the Prophets, upon whom be peace, books of fiqh, and so on. It is also preferred to set up a small tent in the courtyard of the mosque as the Prophet did.

Permissible Acts for the Mu`takif (the Person Performing I`tikaf) The following acts are permissible for one who is making I’tikaf (1) The Person may leave his place of I`tikaf to bid farewell to his wife and a woman can visit her husband who is in I`tikaf Safiyyah, radhiya Allahu `anha said : The prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, was making i`tikaf (in the last ten nights of Ramadan), so I came to visit him at night [and his wives were with him and then departed]. I talked with him for a while, then I stood up to leave, [so he said:”Do not hurry for I will accompany you”,.

(we did not have any doubt about you).’ He said: “Indeed Shaytan circulates in the son of Adam just as blood circulates, and I feared that he would insert an evil thought” -or he said : “something - into your hearts” [Bukhari and Muslim, additional narrations from Abu Dawud] (2) Combing and cutting one’s hair, clipping one’s nails, cleaning one’s body, wearing nice clothes or wearing perfume are all permissible. Aishah radhiya Allahu ‘anhah reported: “The Prophet was performing i’tikaf and he would put his head out through the opening to my room and I would clean [or comb in one narration] his hair. I was menstruating at the time.” [al-Bukhari, Muslim, and Abu Dawud].

(3) The person may go out for some need that he must perform. Aishah radhiya Allahu ‘anhah reported: “When the Prophet performed i`tikaf, he brought his head close to me so I could comb his hair, and he would not enter the house except to fulfill the needs a person has.” [al-Bukhari, and Muslim].

Ibn al-Mundhir says: “The scholars agree that the one who performs i’tikaf may leave the mosque in order to answer the call of nature, for this is something that he personally must perform, and he cannot do it in the mosque. Also, if he needs to eat or drink and there is no one to bring him his food, he may leave to get it. If one needs to vomit, he may leave the mosque to do so. For anything that he must do but cannot do in the mosque, he can leave it, and such acts will not void his i’tikaf, even if they take a long time. Examples of these types of acts would include washing one’s self from sexual defilement and cleaning his body or clothes from impurities.”

(4) The person may eat, drink, and sleep in the mosque, and he should also keep it clean.

Actions that Nullify the I`tikaf If a person performs one of the following acts, his i`tikaf will be nullified: ramadan II Pg 25

(1) Intentionally leaving the mosque without any need to do so, even if it is for just a short time. In such a case, one would not be staying in the mosque, which is one of the principles of i`tikaf.

(2) Abandoning belief in Islam, as this would nullify all acts of worship. If you ascribe a partner to Allah, your work will fail and you will be among the losers.

(3) Losing one’s reason due to insanity or drunkenness, or the onset of menstruation or post-childbirth bleeding, all of which disqualifies a person for i’tikaf.

(4) Sexual intercourse. Allah says (in meaning): “But do not associate with your wives while you are in seclusion (i`tikaf) in the mosques. Those are Limits (set by) Allah. Approach not nigh thereto.

Thus does Allah make clear His Signs to men: that they may learn self-restraint. [al-Baqara; 2:187]

“We sent it (this Qur’aan) down on a blessed Night. Verily, We are ever warning (mankind of Our torment). Therein (that Night) is decreed every matter of ordainment. Amran (i.e. a command or this Qur’aan or His decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messenger). (As) a Mercy from your Lord. Verily! He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. [44:3-6]

I`Tikaf Is Not Restricted To Men Only, Women Also Can Do It :

A Person Who Misses Laylatul-Qadr Is Really A Deprived Person!

Aishah radhiya Allahu ‘anha (the wife of the Prophet) reported that the Prophet, salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, used to practice i`tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan till he died and then his wives used to practice i`tikaf after him.[Bukhari]

Abu Hurairah radhiya Allahu `anhu reported that the Prophet, salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, said “The blessed month has come to you. Allah has made fasting during it obligatory upon you. During it the gates to Paradise are opened and the gates of Hellfire are locked, and the devils are chained. There is a night (during this month) which is better than a thousand months. Whoever is deprived of its good is really deprived (of something great).

[Ahmad, an-Nisa’i and al-Bayhaqi]

Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet,salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, said, “Look for the Night of Qadr in the last ten nights of Ramadan ,’ on the night when nine or seven or five nights remain out of the last ten nights of Ramadan (i.e. 21, 23, 25, respectively).” [Bukhari]

Dear Sisters! when reading this do not forget the modesty and the hijab of the wife of the Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam that you should observe if you intend to perform i`tikaf.

3-Seeking Laylatul-Qadr (the Night of Decree) It is the greatest night of the year like the Day of `Arafah is the greatest day of the year. It is a night about which Allah revealed a full surah, Suratul-Qadr [97:15] and the 3rd to the 6th verses of Surat ad-Dukhan [44:3-6] It is the night when the Qur’an was revealed.

It is the night when the Message (the final and seal of all messages) sent to Mohammad, salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, started.

It is the night when the light, that would

One who misses this blessed night then he has missed much good for no one misses it except one from whom it is withheld.

Therefore it is recommended that the Muslim who is eager to be obedient to Allah should stand in prayer during this night out of Eemaan and hoping for the great reward, since if he does this, Allah will forgive his previous sins.

What Happens To The Person Who Witnesses Laylatul-Qadr? And What Should One Do? Abu Hurairah radhiya Allahu `anhu reported that the Messenger of Allah, salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, said : “Whoever stands (in prayer) in Lailatul-Qadr out

It is preferred to seek this night during the last ten odd nights of Ramadan, as the Prophet salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam,, strove his best in seeking it during that time. We have already mentioned that the Prophet would stay up during the last ten nights, would wake his wives, and then would remain apart from them to worship.

`Aishah radhiya Allahu `anha said: “Allah’s Messenger used to practice I`i’tikaf in the last ten nights and say: ‘Seek out LailatulQadr in the (odd nights) of the last ten of Ramadan.” [Bukhari and Muslim] However if the servant is too weak or unable, then he should at least not let the last seven pass him by, due to what is reported from Ibn ‘Umar, who said: Allah’s Messenger said: “Seek it in the last ten, and if one of you is too weak or unable then let him not allow that to make him miss the final seven.’ [Bukhari and Muslim] This explains his saying: “I see that your dreams are in agreement (that it is in the last seven) so he who wishes to seek it out then let him seek it in the last seven.’

[Bukhari and Muslim] It is known from the Sunnah, that knowledge of the exact night upon which Lailatul-Qadr falls was taken up because the people argued, ‘Ubaadah ibn asSaamit, radiyalloahu ‘anhu, said: The

Prophet came out intending to tell us about Lailatul-Qadr, however two men were arguing and he said: “I come out to inform you about Lailatul-Qadr but so and so, and, so and so were arguing, so it was raised up, and perhaps that is better for you, so seek it on the (twenty) ninth and the (twenty) seventh and the (twenty) fifth.’[Bukhari] Some of the ahadeeth indicate that LailatulQadr is in the last ten nights, while others indicate that it is in the odd nights of the last ten, so the first are general and the second more particular, and the particular has to be given priority over the general.

Other ahadeeth state that it is in the last seven - and these are restricted by mention of one who is too weak or unable. So there is no confusion, all the ahadeeth agree and are not contradictory.

In conclusion: The Muslim should seek out Lailatui-Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten: the night of the twenty-first, the twenty-third, the twenty-fifth, the twentyseventh and the twenty-ninth. If he is too weak or unable to seek it out in all the odd nights, then let him seek it out in the odd nights of the of seven: the night of the twenty-fifth, the twenty-seventh and the twenty-ninth And Allah knows best.

What are the signs of laylatul-Qadr?

Allah’s Messenger , salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, described the morning after Lailatul-Qadr, so that the Muslim may know which day it is. From Ubayy, radhiya Allahu ‘anhu, who said: that he, salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, said: “On the morning following Lailatui-Qadr the sun rises not having any rays, as if it were a brass dish, until it rises up.”[Muslim, Abu Dawud, Tirmithi and Ibn Majah] Abu Hurairah radhiya Allahu `anhu, said: “We were discussing Lailatul-Qadr in the presence of Allah’s Messenger so he said: ‘Which of you remembers (the night) when the moon arose and was like half a plate?"

[Muslim] Ibn ‘Abbaas, radhiya Allahu ‘anhuma, said: Allah’s Messenger, salla Allahu alaihi wa sallam, said: “Lailatul-Qadr is calm and pleasant, neither hot nor cold, the sun arises on its morning being feeble and red.” [at-Tayaalisee, Ibn Khuzaimah and al-Bazzaar with a Hasan Isnad] We pray to Allah All Mighty Most Merciful to bless us this Ramadan by witnessing Laylatul-Qadr.

October 14, U.S. strikes killed 16-yearold Abdulrahman Al-Aulaqi, Anwar AlAulaqi’s son, at an open-air restaurant.

The complaint argues that these killings occurred outside of armed conflict and violated the Constitution and international law, which prohibit the government from using lethal force except as a last resort to protect against specific, concrete and imminent threats of deadly harm.

The complaint also alleges that the government failed to take legally required measures to protect civilian bystanders.

The government has never charged any of the three U.S. citizens with a crime.

Since 2002, and routinely since 2009, the U.S. government has carried out deliberate and premeditated killings of suspected terrorists overseas. President Obama and the most senior officials of his administration have reportedly been deeply involved not just in setting the parameters for the program but in selecting individual targets. Despite all the roadblocks and the resistance that you and others have faced, the efforts have yielded some of the most tangible outcomes for us. For example, family visitation was allowed only after a rally organized by PTJF outside Carswell.

The persistent education and public information campaign has informed many people who had incorrect information.

Many of them have now become ardent supporters and some are actively joining the legal battle to get Aafia reunited with her children.

The struggle to get Aafia home and reunited with her children is one that has gone beyond the plight of one individual or family. It is not a cause of one group or segment or political party. It is a highly charged political case rooted in officially sanctioned torture and rendition and one that exposes the gross inequities of the prevailing global “justice” systems. It also raises the disturbing questions of the relative value of human beings and how official treatment differs simply by virtue of religious belief, race or national origin.

This is why this case is so relevant to all who believe in a civilization based on fairness and justice for ALL human beings without fear or favor. We believe that support for these principles is the reason why PTJF has remained committed to this case. Getting Aafia home has emerged as a key metric to see if the global system starts to make a correction or continues to move dangerously towards the resurrection of a draconian medieval era.

It is our hope that people who support these principles will support the straightforward and peaceful efforts of PTJF and all groups committed to securing freedom for Aafia and those imprisoned like her, and for the fair treatment of all human beings.

CONTINUED | 27 A Message of Solidarity with Global Defenders of Aafia In the three years that I have personally been involved in the case of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, I’ve noted four basic reasons given for the poor lack of communal support for this long suffering political prisoner (and prisoner of war). I would like to briefly address all four of these stated rationales at this time.

1. She’s being punished for something she did (or, she must have done something).

While Aafia is not a sinless saint (she is a human being with human failings just like the rest of us), those who hold this arrogant view of her should be reminded that some of the most pure and noble men and women throughout history (including divinely sent Messengers and Prophets of ALLAH) were tried with tribulations. It has been written that the best way to determine if a trial is a test or a punishment is by examining the person’s response to the ordeal through the prism of something called muhasabah – is the ordeal bringing the person closer to ALLAH, or driving him/her further away from ALLAH. From what those of us who were fortunate enough to be in the courtroom during the trial of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui witnessed from her (from start to finish), and from the reports that I’ve received on Aafia since she’s been imprisoned at FMC Carswell – esp. the reports on what she says to her beloved mother in an attempt to console her during those all too infrequent phone calls – I think any reasonable person would have to conclude that Aafia is someone who has become even closer to The One who created her. (Surely ALLAH knows best!)

2.

There’s really nothing that we can do to change her situation (or, wouldn’t public agitation make things worse for her? It’s better to be quiet and let the system work things out).

Response: History and world culture has shown that quietude in the face of oppression

has NEVER been the cure for “man’s inhumanity to man.” Almighty ALLAH has ordered: “O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to ALLAH, even as against yourselves...”

(4: 135 ); and Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) stated clearly in a verified hadith: “When you see an evil action you must change it with your hand; if you cannot do so, with your tongue; if you cannot do so, detest it within your heart – that is the weakest degree of faith.”

Quietude also inevitably makes matters worse for everyone in society, and exposes those of us who should know better to the probability of ALLAH’s punishment. On the authority of Hudhayfa (r), it is reported that the Prophet (pbuh) said: “By the One in whose Hand rests my soul, you must surely enjoin the good and forbid the evil, otherwise it is expected that ALLAH will send against you a punishment from Him; and then you will supplicate Him, but your supplication will not be answered.”

3.

He/She/They are profiting from Aafia’s misery. Where is the money that’s being raised going?

Response: If the person(s) leading the campaign for Aafia’s release and repatriation (in any locale) are known to be practicing Muslims with good reputations (or even non-Muslims with good reputations), and you can actually see the work being done on Aafia’s behalf, they should be given the benefit of the doubt – with the knowledge that ALLAH is The All Knower; and ALLAH will hold each of us accountable for what we do with the trust invested in us.

4.

We have to be careful because we have too much to lose – i.e. this masjid, this school, this center/community.

Response: Abd Allah b. Umar reported, “Once I saw the Messenger of ALLAH (pbuh) circumambulating the Ka’ba and he was addressing it: ‘How excellent you are and how sweet your smell is! How grand your sacredness is! By the One in Whose Hand

is Muhammad’s soul, the inviolability of a believer’s blood and property is greater in the sight of ALLAH than your sacredness.

We must think only well of a believer.”

– Narrated by Ibn Majah in al-Sunan: Kitab al-fitan [The Book of Tribulations].

Beyond this powerful hadith, I would only add the following: the way that we as individuals and groups respond to the challenges of life crystalizes the meaning of faith and the measure of character two critical qualities that many of our “religious leaders” could use much more of.

In conclusion, ALLAH says: “Let those fight in the cause of ALLAH who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter. To him who fights in the cause of ALLAH – whether he [or she] is slain or gets victory – soon shall We give him a reward of great value.” (S. 4: 74) I am convinced that Dr. Aafia Siddiqui is spiritually in a much better place than most of us – despite the horrific and deliberate assaults on her mind and body. I encourage my brothers and sisters already in the struggle in the UK, South Africa, and other corners of the globe, to stay the course! Let NO ONE distract you from this noble cause! As for the fence sitters and procrastinators, I strongly encourage you to take a stand NOW before it’s too late and the opportunity passes you by.

As it is written: “Indeed from my Ummah there are a folk who will receive rewards equivalent to the rewards of the early ones [my companions] – because they forbid the evil.” (As narrated by Ahmad b. Hanbal in al-Musnad; what a wonderful promise for those who work and strive!)

“My supervisor said I couldn’t wear it during work hours,” Hamdy recalled of his first bearded morning. “Like it was a fake beard I could take on and off. It was absurd.”

This month, a group of male flight attendants filed suit against EgyptAir, demanding the right to sport “neatly trimmed” beards in the cabin, as some other airlines allow. At least one pilot has joined their efforts, according to an activist working on their cause.

Some female Muslim flight attendants, meanwhile, want to cover their hair. In response, the Civil Aviation Ministry set up a committee to study the request. One of its suggestions? Reworking the uniforms in a pharaoh motif, with the crown playing the role of the hijab, a traditional covering for the hair and neck of a Muslim woman.

“The attendants refused,” said Maysa Abdelhadi, one of the flight attendants who has taken part in the negotiations. “It is an unsuitable design.”

The issue is so difficult for Egyptians in part because the country lacks a strong tradition of individual freedoms or protections for them in the law.

A new constitution is due to be written and ratified this year. But that process is likely to be dominated by Islamists, and observers here would be surprised if the document codified a wide-ranging tolerance for selfexpression.

“If the constitution were to say anyone can wear a beard, it will also allow anyone to wear a bikini,” Akl said. “I don’t expect it to go that far.”

Secular and Coptic Christian Egyptians seem to have conflicted views of the new visibility of Islamic piety. The beard is a powerful symbol to many, shorthand for the extremism they see in other countries.

But they also cherish the idea of a modern, cosmopolitan Egypt where people are not persecuted for what they wear on chin or hair.

“If a man wants to grow a beard, he should be able to,” said Mohamed Ahmed, a 20-something systems engineer who was out with friends at a trendy restaurant overlooking the Nile. “But if the waiters here have beards, some people aren’t going to come. For the owner, it’s a business decision.”

For Lameaa Mowafi, a well-known political reporter on Egyptian state television, the decision to cover her hair was an intensely personal one. One morning before the revolution, she came to the studio in a hijab and was immediately banned from doing on-camera work.

But last year, when the crowds filled Tahrir Square and Mubarak was tottering, she took to the air, her hair covered, and has been on ever since.

“It’s a dream come true,” said Mowafi, who broadcasts daily from the presidential palace and is one of several reporters who wear the hijab. “It was impossible to even imagine that a veiled presenter would be live on any channel in any part of Egypt. Now I cover the presidency.”

The contrast between the rapid response and monitoring of Zazi and the lack of citizen interest in Holmes is not lost on some in Colorado’s Islamic community.

“This guy literally arms himself to the teeth by mail order without anyone pointing a finger and saying, ‘What’s going on?’ “ asked Imam Ibrahim Kazerooni, a little incredulous. “If my name is Ibrahim or Mohammed and I order a gun or that much ammunition on the Internet, I think within a few hours of the delivery, the FBI and CIA is at my house.”

Important note: Kazerooni is not suggesting the FBI was wrong to investigate Zazi (nor am I). As it turned out, “marriage” was terrorist-speak for “suicide bombing.” I am glad the people who monitor the inboxes and outboxes of al- Qaeda operatives in Pakistan are aware of such linguistic deceptions.

But Kazerooni, an Iraqi by birth, a former political prisoner of Saddam Hussein and a thoughtful, eloquent representative of Denver ’s Muslim community, is advocating for investigational parity — for nosy neighbors and police officers. approval

He is well aware that much of global terrorism is led by those who have his faith but not his approval. Still, as Friday morning’s theater massacre made plain, terrorists take a lot of forms. One of them, police believe, is the form of a Ph.D. candidate from the University of Colorado Denver.

The fact that neighbors and delivery drivers seem to have failed to notice as Holmes amassed his weapons and ammunition and booby-trapped his apartment, while, for example, New York City police actively loiter in Muslim coffee shops to collect intelligence, is indicative of the greater scrutiny Muslims face in our society in the years since Sept. 11, 2001, Kazerooni said.

“There is the general feeling that exists in the U.S. Muslim community that they are marginalized and treated differently,” Kazerooni said. “The foundation for this is real. There are a number of examples in the country that have led to this cynicism.”

Now, knowing what police say he did, it is easy to view Holmes as a clear threat to himself or others. His once-promising future was suddenly cloudy as he was struggling in school. He shut himself off from much of the world. He began buying guns and ammo in large quantities. He may have dyed his hair a color not found in nature.

But the lack of notice paid to Holmes probably goes beyond ethnicity or religion.

He was a doctoral student with limitless potential. Like Unabomber Ted Kaczynski or Virginia Tech shooter Seung-Hui Cho, he just doesn’t fit our prejudiced societal criteria for suspicion.

And so we ask: Should there be a shared database to flag authorities to large ammunition purchases when someone suddenly ramps up their arsenal? Would that serve as a backstop for a society given to the bias that certain people just aren’t capable of mass violence? Would it even be legal? Would it be effective?

Creation of such a database would only lead to other troubling questions, the biggest of which would be: How many bullets and shells are too many bullets and shells?

For the Batman fans in theaters 8 and 9 Friday morning, the answer is 70.
