ADAMS Breaks Ground for Major Expansion By Muslim Link Staff A 4500 sq ft masjid will crown the ADAMS property in Sterling, VA in the next phase of construction. ADAMS Main Center celebrated this with a groundbreaking ceremony at the annual Eid festival on July 26, 2015. The event had activities for the entire family including carnival rides, moon bounces, barbecue, cotton candy, food trucks, and much more. At noon, Imam Majid performed the groundbreaking ceremony.
This is the third phase of the master plan. to be integrated with existing facility and the extension will expand to another 25,409 sq ft A multipurpose community hall, 14 offices, classrooms and meeting rooms and a world class visiting center is planned for local, regional, national, and international interfaith, media, and government officials. According to an official statement, the priority at this time is to expand its main facility by adding a permanent masjid.
The existing building will be renovated and designated as the youth center. As previously reported in the Muslim Link, when ADAMS started the center's construction project, officials thought it would be best to first build the gymnasium and community center during Phase I. This way, the community members would be able to organize and hold festivals for the families. Second, the 1st parking lot was finished at the completion of Phase II. Now, the Phase III will include the expansion of 2nd parking lot and laying down the foundation of the center's
building with a main Musallah. The site plans are completed and all land development permits have been issued, and construction documents are being processed for permitting. ADAMS plans to start building as soon as 50 percent of the construction funds are secured. The total estimated construction cost is $6 million and currently ADAMS has $2 million at hand.

no excessive noise, stated the landlord of the property, Khalid Akhter.
On July 30, 2015, Tysons Corner, Virginia, known for high-end shopping malls, corporate headquarters and mega churches, became the new permanent home to the McLean Islamic Center.
The current space is no longer able to meet the community’s needs. The center was convening for Taraweeh at a location on Spring Hill Rd during Ramadan. This space accommodates 300+ people and had ample parking.
Mohsin Alikhan, the President of McLean Islamic Center (MIC), informed the community that MIC settled the contract on the property at Jarrett Valley Drive with a payment of $2.6 million to the seller. A fundraising campaign started in April 2014 included the appeal to donate $13,000 for each prayer space. “[Congratulations] to all who participated monetary and nonmonetarily in this historical effort, which was accomplished in the short period of 15 months to establish the first masjid in Tysons Corner, VA,” he stated. He expressed gratefulness to Allah for this special gift. The 1.55-acre site was the former home of the Berea Church located on the very edge of Tyson's Corner, immediately off the exit ramp from Dulles International
Airport (IAD) Access Road (Route 267). This location will serve Muslims working and living in the area. Tysons is the 12th largest employment center in the United States. There are plans to bus worshippers in from corporate buildings for Jummah prayers via two 16-passenger vans shuttle service. The new center is also near the Tyson’s West Metro Station, at the crossing of Route 7 and the Dulles Toll Road. Renovations to the Jarrett Valley property
will include new flooring and carpeting as well as heating and air conditioning equipment. Bringing the building up to code will require fire suppression, landscaping and roof repairs. There are no plans to expand the building. Currently MIC leases a commercial space in downtown McLean for its vibrant community. The center has grown since its founding seven years ago. In the seven years that MIC was in that location, they conducted themselves with civility. There were zero complaints from neighbors and
The Board of Zoning Appeals of the Fairfax County (BZA) heard a lengthy appeal on June 10, 2015 at the Fairfax County Government Center. Jaguars and taxi cabs were parked in the visitor’s parking lot. The hallways of the courtly building had a steady stream of women in hijab, mothers with toddlers and the youth and elders of the McLean community. The hearing was attended by a large number of the congregation and supporters from as far away as New York City. Several interfaith partners joined in testifying in front of the zoning board, including Rabbi Jeffrey Saxe of Temple Rodef Shalom. MIC and the temple engage in several service projects throughout the year.

was filed. I am lead defense counsel for Dr. Al-Timimi and serve with co-counsel Thomas Huff and Allison Wood. We have long argued that the government has withheld evidence in the case. This case centers on allegations that Dr. Al-Timimi— a computational biologist employed in cancer research and a prominent Muslim scholar—made
comments at a dinner shortly after 9-11 that allegedly inspired certain men in attendance to go forward with a plan to travel to a camp in Pakistan run by Lashkar-e-Taiba (LET), a group the United States would later designate as a terrorist organization. Under assorted theories of inchoate liability, Dr. AlTimimi was charged with and convicted of 10 felonies. In a result that the district court described as “very draconian,” sentencing, he received a mandatory lifetime prison sentence. I previously secured a remand of this

Asiyah has infant botulism. Yacouba did not feed her honey but suspects dates from California, a small taste of which Asiyah had as she was being introduced to some solid foods. The symptoms are similar to other children’s illnesses and Yacouba was thankful that she got to the hospital in time. The chaplain, Rev Kathleen Ennis
greeted them and gave them a prayer rug with a yoga mat for the hard floor and pointed out the qiblah (direction to pray) to the family. She also shared the resources available to them through the
case after media reports disclosed the existence of secret surveillance programs conducted by the Government. From April 25, 2006 until May 21, 2014, Dr. Al-Timimi filed roughly two dozen motions seeking discovery of undisclosed evidence. Virtually all of these motions were denied. To establish such a basis, the defense sought evidence through NARA and other sources using the Freedom of Information Act and other means. After years of such attempts, the defense was able to obtain documents referring to earlier investigations involving Dr. Al-
Timimi and other figures, like Anwar Aulaqi.

On behalf of Dr. Al-Timimi and the entire defense team, we are deeply appreciative to the Fourth Circuit and look forward to presenting this matter to Judge Brinkema in the United States District Court for Northern Virginia.

Asiyah’s heart had stopped. The social worker entered the room and one of the nurse guided Yacouba out of the room, putting her baby on the ventilator. A medication was enroute from California, which would help her daughter heal a little quicker. That evening one of the nurses asked Yacouba if she was fasting as it was the month of Ramadan. “She made me feel comfortable,” said Yacouba, who was worried about a disease that she could not prevent or stop from progressing. Ramadan and Eid are hard for parents with children at the Children’s National hospital, many who are terminally ill. The closest masjid is 20 minutes away— too long to be away from a sick child. Yacouba approached the chaplain to host an Eid Salah at the hospital. There were several logistical reasons why the salah could not take plan this year despite elaborate plans. Holiday time services have been a struggle, says Rev Ennis, especially trying to figure out who will lead the service. Staff doctors organize and hold the weekly Jummah.Yacouba says families should making the same request with the chaplain's office and can offer the services of the father to lead Eid salah, as formal clergymen is not needed to hold a service. “I just wanted a simple and spiritual Eid: a communal dua and coffee or tea, maybe some pastries and then go back to Asiyah’s room. May be give coloring books to the kids—nothing too overwhelming. There is a thin line before it gets too much,” says Yacouba. “We don’t need pity, we don't need a party. Your mind is on making dua; your heart and mind is not on a party.” Those who wish to help create a celebration for sick children need to be sensitive to the environment of the hospital. Grandiose clowns characters based on movies aren’t allowed in the hospital, “There is a clown [at the hospital] dressed like doctor- very thoughtful, not loud and abrupt,” shares Yacouba. in this discussion. Masjid security should be approached the same way as the fire department approaches fire safety, it spends most of its time in fire prevention, says Imam Johari Abdul Malik, the Director of Outreach at Dar al Hijrah Islamic Center (DAH) in Falls Church, VA. Imam Johari says that to mitigate concerns about masjid security Islamic centers must spend time on outreach and engagement with the communities around them. He should know, as DAH has been a target of vandalism, threats, and incidents of provocation by mentally unstable guests and has proactively addressed the issue of safety. “I spoke to Imam Siraj [Wahhaj] after 9/11 and asked him, did you guys have problems at Masjid Taqwa and he said no, because our neighbors know us,” he says. Internally, DAH has a security team and with the help of a private contractor and law enforcement they have conducted thorough security assessments, from looking at where cameras are placed, to a technical review of the servers. Two years ago, DAH placed wrought iron fencing around the perimeter of the center. During Eid Salah and Ramadan Taraweeh, DAH hires police officers from Fairfax County for traffic and to provide a security presence. DAH staff maintains a close working relationship with their security team and local law enforcement. “I can send a text message to the precinct’s captain,” says Imam Johari. DAH has on occasion locked down the facility. “When we receive a phone [threat], we call Law Enforcement,” he says, “After the last incident, the captain came over himself and provided increased surveillance by leaving a policeman on the premises; the perpetrators don’t know when the police officers will show up at the masjid.” The captain was also an invited guest at the DAH iftars. Chaudry’s frustrations have been in convincing leaders to take the safety of security of the congregation seriously while navigating internal politics. CAIR is often viewed as aggressive in their approach towards security measures.

August 7th - July 3rd, 2015 There is fine line between maintaining safety and blocking access. There is the danger of excessive paranoia and knee jerk responses that are not beneficial to the community, says Chaudry. “Each community [in the DC Metro] is so different. There are a variety of circumstances [and scenarios] that come into play,” she says. Depending on the situation and timing, the leadership should inform the congregation without unnecessarily alarming the community and families. “We can’t protect ourselves if we don’t know what is going on,” she says. She is also in touch with police departments in Maryland. “It is a long process to find out who is behind [the threat].” One challenge that communities should be aware of is swatting—the act of making hoax calls to 9-1-1 to draw a response from law enforcement, usually a SWAT team. It is considered an act of terrorism intended to put a community on edge. The goal is to frighten people by bringing in the SWAT team. Masajid need to empower themselves, and learn how to deal with these security challenges, says Chaudry. CAIR has seen such action in New Jersey and Maryland, where a threat was called in to a house of worship and it was evacuated and on lock down for an extended time. The individuals who engage in this activity use technology to make it appear that the emergency call is coming from the masjid's phone. It is a serious and expensive crime, and one that has potentially dangerous consequences. Chaudry, who has recently completed a FEMA certification, recommends that Islamic Centers and masajid have security assessments done through the local police departments. She is also reaching out to church, synagogue and masjid leadership to help them develop emergency plans. Some local institutes have taken security seriously. In College Park, MD, Dar us Salaam has installed an electronic card access gate and new shatter proof glass doors and windows at the Al Huda School. A call-in bell and security cameras have been standard security measures for over a decade. Emergency codes are posted in the office and a full time security employee sweeps the ground during the daytime.
DAH has an ongoing process for emergencies. There is an alert system, staff and teachers in the school are notified, the system notifies the parents and eventually if the threat level is high the wider masjid community is informed. Johari agrees that it’s a challenge maintaining the openness of the community and reducing risk. “If we are in a period there have been many threats or incident somewhere else, for example after the tragedy in Chattanooga we [did] step up our security presence including having uniformed security in place at the entrance of musallah,” say Imam Johari. “We may have a plain-clothes presence [during events], just someone watching over us while we pray,” shares Imam Johari. He recommends the pamphlet prepared by CAIR that provides steps for masajid. Imam Johari suggests that all masjid leaders should develop an emergency crisis plan, assess vulnerability of the institution and a security awareness program. The community should be aware, if there is threat, how high the threat level is, what protocols need to be followed, what should trigger an evacuation, and how to use outreach as threat prevention. After 9/11, neighbors made at perimeter around DAH at night. The Homeland Security Grant Program (HSGP) is a resource that plays important role in supporting the building, sustainment, and delivery of five mission areas of Prevention, Protection, Mitigation, Response, and Recovery. DAH has resubmitted a grant application to the Homeland Security Grant Program for the current cycle. DAH was denied due to lack of adequate funding but has resubmitted their request . “We are hopeful that we will become awardees,” says Imam Johari. According to the Department of Homeland Security, ‘these grant programs fund a range of preparedness activities, including planning, organization, equipment purchase, training, exercises, and management, and administration’.
Silver Spring, hears about attacks at places of worship, the first thing on his mind is that his institution has to stand in solidarity with those who have encountered a hate crime. He helps put together a press release to let the community know that people of faith can rely on each other. He believes that this is important because of many of the issues places of worship face have the same roots—anti-immigration and/or racism. “There is a huge history of racism [against African-American] churches,” he notes. “After the Oak Creek Sikh Temple massacre, we joined with a few groups and visited the local gurdhwara,” says Sarwar. “First thing that goes through my mind, we have to stand in solidarity and then how do we make sure that we do the best job to secure our community.” The environment at the center has changed over the years. In the late nineties MCC used to be open, after 9/11, the property was demarcated gates were added. “We have progressed over the years. We don’t have an emergency preparedness plan. We have been thinking about that and we have to tackle this [in the near future].” MCC hires a private firm for a security presence during Ramadan. County police helps with traffic and make a sweep on the 27th night of Ramadan and on Eid day. MCC have never had real threats made against the masjid. “We have been very fortunate. We face other common security issues- after hours vandalism, trespassing teens from outside the community drinking and hanging out on the premises, but no vicious threats,” says Sarwar. “Our security system is fairly robust, [covers] the beginning to the back of the property,” shares Sarwar. The center has used it to curb thefts and once the recording was subpoenaed for a restraining order against an abusive father. Sarwar and the Imam of MCC have received training from Montgomery County, where they have received specific protocols from MoCo police officers.
Most importantly there is a need for a resilience or recovery program that restores the community, as incidents like hate crimes and vandalism brings a community down.
Much like the AME Church where there was a study-circle taking place, there is programming at MCC run by committee heads. These folks have to be trained, says Sarwar. It is on the agenda for future, that full time employees and lead volunteers

be trained to effectively respond to emergencies and help minimize loss of life. Chaudry suggests that community leaders should reach out to local law enforcement, set up a meeting with police and make connections and connecting with NGOs and other faith leaders to build and alliance. “There is strength in unity and standing together,” she says. “We make sure we meet as much as possible outside the community— with interfaith, law enforcement, state and local officials so they know who we are. We try to have the events at MCC so our officials and politicians know who we are. “It has helped – when I go to an interfaith event they will mention us. It is like a tree; people of other faiths advocate us and we reciprocate,” says Sarwar. “We try not to be insular, we are open and engaging, showing the world who we are. We pray a lot that Allah keeps us safe [from] whoever comes through the door. We try not to be paranoid. We don’t spend our time looking out for informants. Our clinic serves many people who come to the masjid.” Bottom line is, Sarwar says, serving people outside of the community has helped MCC build a resilient community. Can the masjid ever be adequately prepared? Chaudry emphasizes that a masjid is supposed to be a place of peace. “We don’t infringe on that and don’t want them to become exclusive; we do want to make sure that they are safe.” Masjid leaders can reach out to Zainab Chaudry to schedule a community safety workshop. CAIR also has a community safety kit that can be customized. (202) 488-8787 Ten Safety Guidelines for an Islamic Center: 1. Form a Security Committee and appoint responsible members of the Board / community as members with responsibility and authority to oversee the premises. 2. Form an emergency response plan / contingency plan for different events
– fire, tornado, active shooting, bomb threats, etc. 3. Do regular inspections of the safety exits ensuring they are not blocked, fire extinguishers are full and serviceable, and alarm system on/off and access panels are accessible. 4. Train personnel in how to set off an alarm or turn off an alarm. 5. Have security personnel do regular walkthroughs of the inside and outside perimeter of the masjid before large gatherings looking for suspicious activity
or unidentified packages lying around, etc. 6. Establish procedures for conducting walkthroughs inside and outside the Masjid as events are taking place and monitor for suspicious activity, etc. 7. Conduct pratice safety drills once a year with women and children involved (Jumuah or weekend school event). 8. Adults should monitor the children playing outside (no unsupervised activity). 9. Children / teens generally should not be outside the masjid after dark. Note that
many cities have curfew hours for teens and children (~10 pm or later). 10. Establish masjid shutdown procedures with responsible and authorized people who can tell people to leave as needed. Identify evacuation and gathering points outside the masjid where people will gather for headcount, etc. if an evacuation does need to take place. Adapted from suggestions by Anees Thaj

Yacouba could not find Muslim support group— needing the camaraderie of someone who has been there. “It would be beneficial to know if there community grief groups and licensed therapists whose background is Muslim that we can refer to our patients and their families,” says Rev. She would love help in curating a list of Muslim grief or support groups, collect donations of Islamic nasheeds that children can listen to in their room, approve gift baskets or decorations for the families that contain small items that can make their stay at the hospital easier. If a family needs shariah questions answers or needs a fatwa, they may ask the Chaplain to set up a meeting with an imam. Often it is the children who are asking difficult questions and religious scholars can help answer those questions. “We also train our staff on cultural sensitivity,” she says. Many staff members are eager to give hugs as is customary in the US or make eye contact, which may not be culturally or religiously appropriate. Dora Black, honorary consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist writes in the British Medical Journal that mothers have reported a greater degree of difficulty with the problems of helplessness, loss of confidence in the ability to be a good parent, financial difficulties, being avoided by others, growing apart from their spouse, and fear of being unable to cope if the child should die than have fathers, who reported significantly greater difficulty with two problems—feeling left out of the ill child’s life and being worried that their spouse was too preoccupied with the dead child.
city of Kilis. Fethullah Üzümcüoğlu and Esra Polat, who got married in the province which is near the Syrian border last week, invited some of those refugees who have fled the country since the civil war which began four years ago. Turkey has welcomed nearly two million Syrian refugees and in Kilis, there are 4,000 refugees that Kimse Yok Mu (Is Anybody There?), a Turkish charity which provides help to millions across the world, is responsible for providing food to.
“I definitely feel that there is a need for spiritual mental health counselors. Muslim spiritual counseling is really important. There are so many issues when a child is terminally ill. You become like in segments—what's important, what’s not. you start to question everything,” says Yacouba. If you know someone with a child at the hospital, there are many ways that you can help: Yacouba’s community was providing hot home cooked meals for them. “What made a difference for us [was] our masjid sister were cooking for us. [May husband] would bring a hot meal to the hospital as you don’t have a lot of food options. Little care packages- you don’t have things that you have at home like toothpaste,” she said. Any offer of help is welcomed, said the chaplain, as long as the family approves and needs it. Please pray for the ill and terminally ill children and their families in our area. If you’d like to schedule an event to visit children at the hospital please visit http://childrensnational.org/giving/getinvolved/volunteer#tab-4
"We thought that on such a happy day, we would share the wedding party with our Syrian brothers and sisters. We thought this was best done with Kimse Yok Mu who could provide a truck. God willing, this will lead to others doing the same and giving food to our Syrian brothers and sisters. For us, it was an interesting wedding dinner." The father also said he was glad that the couple began a new life "with such a selfless action". Wedding guests shared food using trucks and those providing meals included the bride and groom themselves.
In total, there are four million Syrian refugees who had fled the country in what the UN described as the worst crisis of its kind in a generation. Almost eight million people are displaced within the country, the UN said last month.
Hatice Avci, a spokesman for Kimse Yok Mu, told i100.co.uk that on Thursday, the couple pooled the money they had received from their families to host a party with the refugees who live in and around the city.
The idea for sharing their special day with those less fortunate was that of the groom's father, Ali Üzümcüoğlu. He told Serhat Kilis newspaper that he hoped others would do the same and share their wedding celebrations with their Syrian brothers and sisters.
Kimse Yok Mu is affiliated with the Gülen movement, also known as the Hizmet (Service) movement, which is inspired by the teachings of Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish Islamic preacher in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania.
• Children with life threatening illness often know that they are dying but seldom have the opportunity to talk about it • Children are usually less upset when they are cared for at home than in hospital and their long term outcome is better; children’s hospices can provide specialist and respite care if it is needed • Both parents and siblings are at risk for psychological disturbance when a child is dying; surviving children may need information, explanation and support • W h e n d e a t h o c c u r s siblings and parents may be encouraged to view the body and attend the funeral • Professionals benefit from training in communicating with parents and children faced with the death of a child
The bride, Mrs Polat, told i100 what a wonderful experience it was and how happy she was to share the meal with those in need. "I was shocked when Fethullah first told me about the idea but afterwards I was won over by it. It was such a wonderful experience. I’m happy that we had the opportunity to share our wedding meal with the people who are in real need," she said. According to local media, local singer Reşit Muhtar also helped out and provided food to the special guests. The groom, Mr Üzümcüoğlu, said it was a great feeling to make others happy. "Seeing the happiness in the eyes of the Syrian refugee children is just priceless. We started our journey to happiness with making others happy and that’s a great feeling," he said. And his father just might have got his wish. His son said that his friends were so inspired, they hoped to do the same during their wedding celebrations.

The Home Owners Association of the Carrington development and neighbors had come out in large numbers to present their concerns with traffic issues and parking. Currently there are 50 parking spaces on the Jarrett valley property. An additional 42 parking spaces will be added in Phase two of the MIC plan for the property. Tahir Butt and Shahid Khan, residents of Carrington Homes, a neighborhood near the new property, were excited about the masjid moving so close to home. Mehrunissa,of Sterling, VA, made dua in the audience at the hearing. She attends Dr Alvi’s Quran classes at MIC every Friday night. She watched as the MIC committed to avoid parking in the neighborhood in an extremely detailed parking management plan presented to the BZA, which included the appointment of a parking coordinator who would be available to the HOA to address complaints immediately. The attorney representing the Islamic Center also shared that MIC would not hold food service at the center during Ramadan.

The Board of Zoning Appeals of the Fairfax County approved with a unanimous vote the establishment of the center. This news came as a pleasant surprise after 15 months of planning. “We are thankful for your patience and support during the process. A number of difficulties were overcome by Allah's grace,” stated Alikhan. A $475,000 Qardh-e-Hasana (loan without interest) is outstanding, that the community is hoping to pay off as soon as possible. The exact date for the first salah at the new masjid is yet to be announced. A number of steps including county requirements need to be completed before MIC can formally start operations in September 2015. Baig hopes some of the tech savvy and handy members of the community will take care of the installation. The masjid runs on donations. As news from Chattanooga, TN made waves and the man responsible for the murder of four marines at a military site was identified as a Muslim,, the members of MMA faced what they believe is backlash. “We live in strange times. Someone is trying to send us a message,” says Baig. He struggles with the thought that his community is paying for the crime of a troubled man hundreds of miles away. “There are 40-50 children who come to study the Quran here after school. It is a big concern for us,” says Baig, speaking on behalf of the board members responsible for the MMA. The local news stations covered the story and Baig’s non Muslim neighbors sent him a card with a basket of candy, shocked that something like this had happened in their area. He says that we can not let five bad apples define humanity otherwise we put an end to humanity. “One of the reasons we didn't install cameras is because we didn't believe a violent crime could happen in our community. I have lived here for 15 years,” says Muneer Baig President of Manassas Muslim Association. The Manassas Police Department offers a free security assessment, which MMA has made use of. AIPAC Taking All But 3 Freshmen Congresspeople to Israel in Effort to Sabotage Iran deal By Ben Norton
August 04, 2015 "Information Clearing House" - "Mondoweiss" - The American Israel Education Foundation (AIEF), the educational wing of hardline right-wing proIsrael lobbying organization the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), is taking all but three freshmen US lawmakers on a tour of Israel, in hopes of turning them against the Iran nuclear deal. Over 50 US congresspeople will meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu in Israel in August. Two separate trips are being organized along partisan lines— one for Democrats, and another for Republicans. The Democrat trip begins on August 3, and will be led by House Minority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Maryland). The Republican trip begins on August 8, and will be led by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-California).

The British Library's expert on such manuscripts, Dr Muhammad Isa Waley, said this "exciting discovery" would make Muslims "rejoice". The manuscript had been kept with a collection of other Middle Eastern books and documents, without being identified as one of the oldest fragments of the Koran in the world.
Muhammad preach "Finding out we had one of the oldest fragments of the Koran in the whole world has been fantastically exciting." The tests, carried out by the Oxford University Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit, showed that the fragments, written on sheep or goat skin, were among the very oldest surviving texts of the Koran.
Oldest texts When a PhD researcher, Alba Fedeli, looked more closely at these pages it was decided to carry out a radiocarbon dating test and the results were "startling".
These tests provide a range of dates, showing that, with a probability of more than 95%, the parchment was from between 568 and 645.
The university's director of special collections, Susan Worrall, said researchers had not expected "in our wildest dreams" that it would be so old.
"They could well take us back to within a few years of the actual founding of Islam," said David Thomas, the university's professor of Christianity and Islam.
Prof Thomas says the writer of this manuscript could have heard the Prophet
"According to Muslim tradition, the Prophet Muhammad received the
revelations that form the Koran, the scripture of Islam, between the years 610 and 632, the year of his death." Prof Thomas says the dating of the Birmingham folios would mean it was quite possible that the person who had written them would have been alive at the time of the Prophet Muhammad. "The person who actually wrote it could well have known the Prophet Muhammad. He would have seen him probably, he would maybe have heard him preach. He may have known him personally - and that really is quite a thought to conjure with," he says. First-hand witness Prof Thomas says that some of the passages of the Koran were written down >> continued on next page

But the latest possible date of the Birmingham discovery 645 - would put it among the very oldest. 'Precious survivor'
He says that "the parts of the Koran that are written on this parchment can, with a degree of confidence, be dated to less than two decades after Muhammad's death". "These portions must have been in a form that is very close to the form of the Koran read today, supporting the view that the text has undergone little or no alteration and that it can be dated to a point very close to the time it was believed to be revealed." The manuscript, written in "Hijazi script", an early form of written Arabic, becomes one of the oldest known fragments of the Koran. Because radiocarbon dating creates a range of possible ages, there is a handful of other manuscripts in public and private collections which overlap. So this makes it impossible to say that any is definitively the oldest.
Dr Waley, curator for such manuscripts at the British Library, said "these two folios, in a beautiful and surprisingly legible Hijazi hand, almost certainly date from the time of the first three caliphs".
"The Muslim community was not wealthy enough to stockpile animal skins for decades, and to produce a complete Mushaf, or copy, of the Holy Koran required a great many of them." Dr Waley suggests that the manuscript found by Birmingham is a "precious survivor" of a copy from that era or could be even earlier.
Prof Thomas says the dating of the Birmingham folios would mean it was quite possible that the person who had written them would have been alive at the time of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). The first three caliphs were leaders in the Muslim community between about 632 and 656. Dr Waley says that under the third caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, copies of the "definitive edition" were distributed.
"In any case, this - along with the sheer beauty of the content and the surprisingly clear Hijazi script - is news to rejoice Muslim hearts." The manuscript is part of the Mingana Collection of more than 3,000 Middle Eastern documents gathered in the
1920s by Alphonse Mingana, a Chaldean priest born near Mosul in modern-day Iraq. He was sponsored to take collecting trips to the Middle East by Edward Cadbury, who was part of the chocolatemaking dynasty. The local Muslim community has already expressed its delight at the discovery in their city and the university says the manuscript will be put on public display. "When I saw these pages I was very moved. There were tears of joy and emotion in my eyes. And I'm sure people from all over the UK will come to Birmingham to have a glimpse of these pages," said Muhammad Afzal, chairman of Birmingham Central Mosque. The university says the Koran fragments will go on display in the Barber Institute in Birmingham in October. Prof Thomas says it will show people in Birmingham that they have a "treasure that is second to none".

Opinion
Being True to Islam, Despite the Supreme Court By Imam Mikaeel Smith Since the United States Supreme Court decision to allow homosexual marriages in all 50 states in America, the American Muslim community has been forced to reanalyze what it means to be an American Muslim, and specifically what American Muslims should think about such legislation. American Muslims have been forced to question (once again) how one balances living in any country that sometimes legislates against one's core principles. Social media has been flooded with articles, posts and long discussions, as Muslims both young and old struggle try to understand where they should stand during this epic moment. A recent open letter written by two Muslims (a writer, Reza Aslan, and a comedian, Hasan Minhaj) stated that it is hypocritical to fight for the civil rights of one marginalized group and not the civil rights of another group. What the writers fail to address is that one first has to be true to his or herself before they can be true to the society that they live in. They also fail to realize that Muslim civic engagement is based on not the current relative definition of what is or isn't morally right but rather the Muslim engages based on a revealed ultimate moral code, which is static. If a Muslim stands up for the propagation of what she considers immoral actions, she is untrue to herself and an adversity to her society and religion. I find it extremely disturbing that being true to what one believes can be called hypocrisy, when in reality it is the exact opposite. This decision has effectively deemed homosexual relationships as morally right, in other words “good”. But what about the millions of Americans who the day before the decision was passed felt that this action was vile and detestable. What should they do if they wish to be good Americans? Well, if they truly believe homosexuality to be immoral, then their capitulation is tantamount to giving up a struggle for the well being of American society.
The majority of the confusion regarding this legislation is about how a Muslim should interact with an individual or society that engages in such actions; and secondly, is it right for a Muslim to support such legislation. Among Muslims there have been some who have expressed happiness over the legislation. In my understanding, this is completely wrong and unacceptable for someone who believes the action to be immoral. When the Qur'an and Prophetic tradition speak so adamantly and clearly regarding an evil and perversion of an action, on what basis can a Muslim express happiness over its propagation? A cursory study of the Qur'an would show us that a Muslim is taught to struggle to become the means for the removal of evil. If this is not possible than he should at least dislike the evil. The evil is understood to be like that of a tumor, which has infected a person or even a society. The objective of doctors' efforts is the removal of cancer out of love and compassion for the patient. Unity is also a byproduct of morally based political engagement in that all the doctors will join hands regardless race, religion or social class to get rid of the tumor. There are two tendencies which have added to the confusion. Some of the doctors have begun to hate the person due to the stubbornness of the tumor. This leads some to defend the evil in an attempt to stand by the person. While other doctors have begun to forget that the tumor should not be there in the first place. The Islamic moral code is not relative. In fact true morality can never be relative rather it is absolute. As Peter Kreeft states in Ecumenical Jihad, “Otherwise, such a moral relativism is an infallible prescription for social chaos.” This exact idea is also found in the Qur'an, where Allah states, “Had there been any God other than He, the Heavens and Earth would be in chaos”. The “chaos” that we see today
is called moral relativism which will be discussed later. Our Islamic moral code commands us to stand and fight for all human beings, but we are also commanded to stand against all dehumanizing deeds. Essential to understanding the Islamic moral system, I have outlined some facts or truths about morality: 1. Morality is necessary for a society to survive. The alternative is chaos 2. Morality is not Sectarian. It is both universally know and universally binding 3. Morality is natural or based on human nature. Also know as These laws are intrinsic to human nature just as laws of physics are to nature of matter 4. Morality liberates. It is a set of directions for the purpose of making our human nature flourish 5. Morality takes effort. This is know a Jihad, or a fighting against forces of evil in all of us 6. Morality gives meaning and purpose to life 7. Morality is reasonable. It is not blind but intelligent. It perceives the difference between good and bad actions and lifestyles. It “discriminates” not between good or bad people but good or bad actions and lifestyles.[1] Point number 7 above points out perhaps the most essential aspect of Islamic morality. That is does discriminate. But this “discrimination” is not between good and bad people but good and bad actions. When living in America, or any other nonIslamic country for that matter, a Muslim is allowed by the Shariah (the moral, ethical, social and political codes of conduct for Muslims at an individual and collective level) to fore-go or ignore some of the aspects of the Shariah. For example, the penal law and some aspects of civil law are not to be implemented. However, this
does not mean that a Muslim should lose sight of what his or her belief deems to be ideal — as per the Qur'an and Prophetic teachings of Muhammad. It has become a rather trendy method for many Muslim activists to dismiss or even demonize some aspects of the Prophetic teachings in order to defend Islam. The question begs to be asked, “What Islam are you defending?” This method of defending Islam has led to widespread confusion among Muslims as to what is a part of religion and what is cultural. As Muslims, we are not obliged nor allowed to force people upon Shariah. However, we are also not allowed to forget what Islam holds to be ideal. Muslims should thus understand that their moral engagement in the American political scene is essential to the well-being of America. Their engagement will only contribute to the betterment of the society when they engage with their universal code of morality, their list of unchanging rights and wrongs. Without this moral law Muslims are no longer a part of the solution, but rather part of the chaos. From this, it should be clear that the Quranic delineation of rights and wrongs outlines the ultimate rights and wrongs. Actions that always were and always will be right or wrong. It is this morality that give meaning to life and society and this morality that liberates man while unifying him with others. It will not judge man but must judge the actions and lifestyles of man. In my understanding, both American values and Islamic values merge on the elevation and honoring of those who are true to what they believe —both in speech and action. Allah knows best. Imam Mikaeel Smith is the Resident Scholar of the Islamic Society of Annapolis and Makkah Learning Center [1] Ecumenical Jihad; Kreeft page 75
