Muslim Link Staff Reporter While dozens of Muslim organizations in the United States work through their own separate agendas and expertise, a budding coalition hopes to unify and magnify their accomplishments in the eyes of the Muslim community and the community at large. The Muslim American Citizens Coalition and Public Affairs Council (MACCPAC) was established in March of 2010 in an effort to coordinate and communicate the efforts of Muslim individuals and organizations through intellectual discourse. Although the organization is still in its infancy, it’s founders hope that it will grow into a formidable voice for Muslim community, ultimately showcasing the diversity and wealth of skills that growing Muslim organizations bring to the American landscape. “We understand that American Muslims are educated, that they have high incomes and that they have expertise. We need to introduce these expertise to

While bringing Muslim organizations and community members together with Congressional leaders and policy makers in large scale events is something that MACCPAC hopes to do regularly in order to establish a known presence, it’s the face to face meetings with government officials and department heads that the coalition feels makes the biggest difference. “The more important thing is will [congressional leaders] stand for your issues not if they attend your events,” said Jameel Johnson, former Chief of Staff to Congressman Gregory Meeks of New York. Johnson, who has over eleven years of experience working with congressional leaders serves as MACCPAC’s Congressional Relationship Advisor. He hopes that by engaging in a deeper understanding of how congressional leaders operate, MACCPAC will be able to build a more effective and lasting relationships on Capitol Hill. “The first thing is to get to understand

[congressional leaders] motivations. Their motivation is to serve their constituency and to get reelected. They don’t want to get involved in something that they’ll have to explain in the papers,” he said. The mistake he sees most Muslim organizations making when dealing with the movers and shakers in Congress is that they too often present only the problems and not intelligently developed solutions. MACCPAC, he said, is unique in that it will strive not only to understand and research the problems and issues that face the Muslim community in America but will go a few steps further as well. “[We will] figure out the solution and then take the issue to the elected official instead of taking the problem to the elected official,” said Johnson. Polygamy: Tis The Season? As Legal Marriage Is Redefined, Some Muslim Call for Decriminalizing Polygamy By Wafa Unus

Muslim Link Staff Reporter The legalization of gay marriage in six states and the continued efforts toward legalizing it in the rest of the country has opened the flood gates that have, for hundreds of years defined legal marriage in the United States as the union between one man and one woman. As more proponents of gay marriage push bills through Congress and rally votes that support marriage as a constitutional right for all citizens regardless of sexual orientation another group that remains decidedly outside the legal confines of marriage is slowly entering the limelight.

Just as the gay community has fought for equal treatment under the law, polygamists argue the same. As citizens of the United States, they argue, they should have the right to legally marry whoever they please, or however many they please. In the same regard that the gay community faced stark opposition from religious organizations that diligently fought, and continue to fight the idea of gay marriage

Over 130 years ago a decision was made that criminalized the practice of polygamy in the United States. Despite the redefinition of legal marriage to include homosexual couples, the country still grapples at the idea of polygamy, a commonly misunderstood primarily religiously based practice. With an estimated 50,000 to 100,000 people living in polygamous situations in the U.S. today, few have seen their actions reprimanded in court. This is likely because many live in secrecy out of fear that exposure of their practices will result in loss of jobs, break apart their families, or land them in jail. However, even in cases where polygamy is known, few states move to actually prosecute the individuals involved. While some choose to quietly live their

While the U.S. Constitution boasts a separation of church and state, which ultimately helped the gay community overcome the opposition, it also guarantees the free exercise of religion which has somewhat ironically been the biggest obstacle for the polygamist community. Because polygamy is considered a derivative of certain religious beliefs it would logically seem as though the practice of polygamy would then be protected under constitutional law. However, this is not the case, and has not been since Reynolds vs. United States in 1978 in which the court refused to recognize polygamy as a legitimate religious practice. Instead, it was deemed it as “almost exclusively a feature of the life of Asiatic and African people.” Later decisions showed no progress in accepting polygamy as a

In cases where religious practices are deemed harmful to individuals or to the public, the free exercise of religion no longer applies. While Islam itself does not condone acts of homosexuality and though the mainstream Muslim community remains largely uninvolved with polygamy in the United States, there are a minority who still engage in the practice though

Reviving Tradition, Museum Hosts Afghan American Oral History Night By Sufia Alnoor

Muslim Link Contributing Writer On Saturday October 22nd, 2011 America’s Islamic Heritage Museum and Cultural Center hosted its Afghan American Oral History Night. The event is the second in the Museum’s oral history series, which aims at documenting the oral history of America’s diverse Muslim population. The first event in the series, held on September 18th covered the “early Muslim pioneers of Washington, DC” who helped build Masjid Muhammad during the 1950s. Amir Muhammad, the Museum’s president noted that the museum is “beginning with AF, the Afghan American community’s initials are AF and the African American community’s [initials] are AF.” And with oral history nights already scheduled for the Turkish community and one in the works for the Somali community, it seems Mr. Muhammad intends to go through the whole alphabet of America’s diverse Muslim subgroups.

Wali Haidar, the president of the board at Mustafa Center Qari Zia Makhdoom began the night with a heart felt recitation of verse 13 from Surah Hujurat declaring that “O mankind! Lo! We have created you from male and female, and have made you nations and tribes that ye may know one another. Lo! the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware.” (M. Pickthall Tanslation). He then thanked the museum’s founders and the organizers of the event for this “much needed effort especially

We have a strong tradition and [with] this [event] Alhamdulillah, we are in a way reviving that.” He closed his remarks with a reflection on hijrah, recalling being “part of a caravan with [his] family crossing the border” to Pakistan and how that experience gave him a very “deep connection with the Qur’an.” Hijrah became something that he “could very much relate to, that [his family was] doing right there and then.” Mr. Wali Haidar, the president of the board at Mustafa Center spoke next and his remarks covered the early immigra-

tion experience of the Afghan American community and institution building. He first came to the United States as a student to study engineering. After returning to Afghanistan, he was teaching at the University of Engineering when the Communist coup and the subsequent Communist invasion of Afghanistan occurred. “It was a time of great turmoil and upheaval and uprooting in that country. Families lost some of their members, some of the families were eradicated all together and the whole society was uprooted.” He recounted how early Afghan immigrants rented “a little apartment on the second floor of an apartment building” in Alexandria, Virginia to provide a space for prayers and memorial services for the deceased. It was an inspiring narrative ending in the eventual establishment of Afghan Academy and Mustafa Center in Annandale, Virginia. Cabbie Attacker Gets Off With Fine Two Assaulted Cab Driver After Learning He Was Muslim By Wafa Unus

Muslim Link Staff Reporter The Council on American-Islamic relations contacted the Office of the State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County Maryland to bring hate crime charges against a Prince Frederick man who assaulted and threatened to murder a Muslim limo driver of Moroccan origin. The altercation occurred on March 11th 2011 around midnight after the limo driver picked up two passengers in Washington D.C. and drove them to National Harbor. According to a press release from the CAIR, when the passengers learned that the drivers’ name was Mohammed and that he was Muslim, they allegedly began using religion and ethnic slurs as well as making death threats.

Upon reaching National Harbor, one of the passengers is said to have “punched the driver in the head, knocking him to the ground and fracturing his wrist.” While both of the passengers were charged and arrested, only one passenger was scheduled for trial on Monday, October 17th. However, the Office of the State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County Maryland decided against prosecuting the individual if he paid a $65 restitution. While CAIR noted this “slap on the wrist” as a concern, the Council welcomed the further investigation of the second assailant as a hate crime.

CAIR Gets Support To Challenge Islamophobic Narrative Written by Wafa Unus

Muslim Link Staff Reporter As the sunset on October 15, 2011, hundreds of Muslims began to stream into the Crystal City Marriot in Arlington Virginia for a night of social and political discourse at Council on AmericanIslamic Relations (CAIR) National’s annual fundraising banquet. The sold out event boasted of some of the regions most influential American Muslim leaders and Imams as well as hundreds of organizations, businesses and individuals who came to show their support for CAIRs mission. With approximately 800 people in attendance, CAIR raised 400 thousand dollars, exceeding its goal by one hundred thousand. In his opening statement executive director Nihad Awad spoke of the growing concerns regarding Islamophobia in America today and reaffirmed CAIR’s commitment to work toward stopping those who seek to deprive Muslims of their constitutional rights. “So today, what CAIR is doing, is defending the constitution of the United States by defending the rights of American Muslims,” he said. His statements were challenged by a group of protestors who had gathered outside the hotel carrying signs that questioned CAIR’s commitment to constitutional freedom and Islam’s teachings on freedom and justice. This juxtaposition was an example of the competing narratives Muslim American’s face in the United States. “There are two competing narratives, the narrative that our detractors and hate mongers are putting out on Islam and Muslims and we know that this is a false negative and a false narrative but we cannot just ignore it because it will not go away by itself,” Awad said. “Our narrative of who we are, the heroes who we are celebrating and we will celebrate tonight, this is the narrative that America should hear. This is the narrative that America should know. This is the narrative that the Muslim community should put forward and this will not be done by

talking. It will not be done just by statements. It will done through organized work. Special guests, Imam Siraj Wahaj and Virginia Congressman Jim Moran were well received. Before he began fundraising, Wahaj spoke on a single theme that he felt put CAIR’s event and efforts in perspective.

It was something his mother had told him, ‘She said, son people are people,” he recounted. “There is good and bad everywhere you go, there is good and bad. Good and bad black people. Good and bad men and women. Good Muslims and bad Muslims Good Jews and bad Jews. Good Christians and bad Christians. People are people.” It is this reality that he believes warrants

Dad Plans 230 Mile Bike Ride for Islamic Education By Muslim Link Staff

es from friends and co-workers, Abdur Rashid, 40 years old, rode from Al-Huda School in College Park, Maryland to a learning store in Alexandria, Virginia, taking bike trails and secondary roads the whole way. He pulled a small bike pod behind him and filled it up with books and learning material before trekking back to Al-Huda School – a 75 mile round trip route. The class needed about $700 for the reading corner; Abdur Rashid brought in about $1500.

Abdur Rashid struggles to fund his daughter’s education at Al-Huda School. He works hard to pay the monthly tuition, and at the end of the month, there’s not much left. Like many Muslims, he wishes he could donate to his daughter’s school, especially at the annual fundraisers, but without much money left over for his family, he has to make hard choices – or creative ones. Last year when his daughter’s kindergarten teacher asked parents to donate for a reading corner, Abdur Rashid decided that although he didn’t have money to contribute, he had himself – his energy, his strength, and his sweat.

This year, he is setting a higher goal. He plans to bike from Al-Huda School in College Park, Maryland to the Al-Huda School branch in Pennsylvania and back, a round trip of 230 miles. He decided to launch a personal bikeathon to raise what he could for the reading corner. Securing per-mile pledg-

The Islamic Community School in Baltimore celebrated its rich history with the students, staff, parents, alumni and community members. The evening began with the high school male students leading the attend-

alumnus of the school, presented a lighthearted list of memorable events of the school , which included tidbits all the way back to the early 1980s. Imam Taif Abdullah of Masjid As-Saffat spoke of the founding of the school and the importance that education has always had in the Masjid As-Saffat community. The evening event was emceed by Naeem Muhammad, of the nasheed group Native Deen. “One of the best decisions my mother made for my life was to send me to the Islamic Community School, ”stated Naeem, the first twelfth grade graduate of the Islamic Community School in 1993. This feeling of appreciation was echoed by the eloquent speeches given by the two current seniors at the school. Rashaad Cook spoke of the need for the alumni to continue to give back to the school that gave so much to them. Khayriyyah Garner, the last of six siblings to graduate from the school, urged the community to support the school with their children, financial support and du’ah.

The fundraising portion of the program garnered twenty-two more members for the school’s “50for 50” Teacher Stipend Program. Members of the program donate $50 per month for ten months of the school year. The staff of the Islamic Community School have never received a salary, and rely on donations for the small stipends they receive. To add to the event, there was a display of Islamic Community School memorabilia from the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, and a silent auction. The banquet reflected the support the school receives from the Muslim community throughout the region. Attendees included representatives from Masjid Ul-Haqq, Masjid Mumineen, The Gwynn Oak Islamic Community, The Muslim Cultural Center, Clara Muhammad School, Dar UsSalaam and Al-Huda School. Karim Amin summed up his feelings about the event with these words, “As a current parent and graduate of the Islamic Community School, I pray that the school continues for many more generations

to come.”

Al-Azhar Martial Arts Wins at Baltimore Tournament On October 16th, over 20 members of Al-Azhar Silat team headed out to the 29th Annual Battle of Baltimore World Championships. This tournament is a nationally ranked tournament with competitors coming from all over the east coast. Participants in this “open” tournament come from many different martial arts styles including Taekwondo, Karate, Kungfu, Muay Thai, etc. Based out of the ADAMS Center in Sterling, Virginia students traveled for more than an hour in order to test their skills against some of the best martial artists on the east coat. Out of the twenty students that attended, 10 of the students had not competed before in a tournament, and 5 of them had only competed once in a regional tournament in Virginia. No doubt they were nervous. As is the tradition with the Al-Azhar school, the Silat team started the competition with a dua (prayer). After an encouraging speech by the Silat instructors, Abdul-Malik Ahmad, Wona Sumantri,

and Terra Kurnia the students dispersed to the different rings to compete in their respective divisions. Pencak Silat (or Silat) is a martial art of the Malay people is found in Muslim majority countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Brunai. Al-Azhar Silat, is one of many styles of Silat and has its headquarters based in Masjid Agung Al-Azhar in Jakarta, Indonesia. Pencak Silat is characterized by its lower center of balance, effective sweeps, locks, trapping techniques, and graceful movements that mimic animals such as the tiger. Many of the sweeping and trapping techniques that are unique to Silat are not allowed in sparring at open tournaments such as the Battle of Baltimore. Although MACCPAC may seem on the surface to serve a similar purpose as many Muslim organizations today, its leaders have no intention of reinventing the wheel.

Johnson feels MACCPAC’s unique strength lays in its formation as a coalition and not an organization. “As opposed to just being another organization with a niche we put ourselves in a situation where we are able to gather our strength as a whole without stepping on anyone’s toes,” he said.

forming the Hajj, this season culminates in the sacrifice (qurbani or udhiyya) on the day of Eid-ul-Adha, followed by the tradition of distributing the meat to family, friends and those in need and thereafter gathering together for a meal prepared from the sacrificial meat. Yet for most second generation Muslim Americans, this tradition of the sacrifice on Eid-ul-Adha has been lost. The concept of personally sacrificing an animal, in remembrance of the sacrifice of Prophet Abraham as he followed and submitted to the commands of his Lord, has become divorced from the celebrations of this holiday. While providing sacrificial meat for needy families around the world via donations to charitable organizations is undoubtedly a noble cause, this practice has caused the near complete loss of the Prophetic example (sunnah) of sacrificing an animal and then eating from its meat on the day of Eid-ul-Adha. Most Muslim children in America grow up without ever understanding the centrality of this sacrifice or witnessing it on Eid-ul-Adha. For many, the lack of locations where such a sacrifice can be facilitated is the underlying reason for this choice. However, Muslims residing in the Maryland, Virginia and D.C. areas are fortunate in having more options than ever to undertake this practice on Eid-ul-Adha. This year, at least three businesses in the area are offering on-site slaughtering facilities, specifically designed for Eid-ul-Adha. They include locations in Clarksburg and New Windsor for Maryland and Dumfries for Virginia. For Houshang Haji Momenian, a 65 year old Iranian-origin business owner who has been in the meat industry for more than 15 years, this Islamic slaughter is the “only way we know how [to kill an animal]”. He recalls how all his family’s meat in 1968 in Arkansas would come from goats he would purchase for $7 each and slaughter himself. Today, he owns and operates a large USDA certified slaughterhouse in Waynesboro, PA, which supplies meat to restaurants and stores, as well as a 29 acre farm and slaughtering facility in Clarksburg, MD,

In future years, Momenian plans to enhance the facilities on his farm to include picnic areas and cooked food for sale for families to enjoy while the slaughtering on Eid is being done. Joseph D. Kavanagh, Jr., an Irish-origin owner of the USDA inspected Lambco facility in New Windsor, MD, has been providing goats and sheep for sacrificial slaughter since 2007. He was encouraged to tap into the Muslim market by his Kuwaiti son-in-law. “We always try to get the highest quality of animal, since its a sacrifice. We’ve

The animals are purchased from local area producers in Maryland and Virginia, who maintain high standards for their livestock. They are fed a high quality hay and grain diet, and are not administered any antibiotics or hormones. Once at the LambCo facility, the animals are kept clean and dry in specifically designed structures and are taken care of in the most humane way. American History. The ripples of these historic struggles are still felt today. On the same day of dedication of the Martin Luther King memorial, nearly one thousand gathered in nearby Crystal City for a fundraising banquet for a prominent national Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization working toward overcoming discrimination of American Muslims. Blocks away from the memorial hundreds of people out of jobs and in severe financial hardship protested corporate greed and economic corruption in government. In a world reminiscent of that which King left just 43 years ago there is a reverberation of social and economic unrest that many feel can be best approached through the philosophies King left behind. Throughout history almost every ethnic and racial community has faced some sort of discrimination or civil unrest. Many have been discriminated against, arrested, prosecuted, and killed based solely on the color of their skin or the evidence of their ethnic heritage. Today, history has seemingly chosen the American Muslim community to face the struggles of so many before them. As the American Muslim community faces its own cases of discrimination, violence and hate crimes, questions unfold: What defines the struggles of the American Muslim in the post 9-11 world? Is This The Era Of The “American Muslim Civil Rights Movement?” Because American Muslims are more actively fighting against hate crimes through the legal system, the American Muslim struggle is often misrepresented as a legal movement. While both American Muslims today and African American’s during the civil rights movement faced discrimination there is a clear distinction between the two. While African Americans were legally barred from living, eating, working and learning in particular places, American Muslims can legally live, eat, work, and go to school wherever they please. The American Muslim battle against

discrimination remains a social barrier while the African American struggle against discrimination was a distinctly legal barrier. While American Muslims fight for the government to uphold their legal rights, African American’s during the Civil Rights Movement fought to bring those rights into existence.

As such, Muslims must stop speaking about Muslims and instead start speaking to the deeper issues of basic human rights that apply on a deeply human level.

While African American’s became the face of the Civil Rights Movement through the trials of America’s racial intolerance, their struggle was not solely defined by race. For American Muslims to find the same progress that African American’s did during the Movement, they need to be willing to move beyond American Muslim issues, argues Reverend Graylan Hagler, a prominent local peace and justice activist and the Se-

Though the struggles that the American Muslim community face are seemingly perched on the shoulders of the Civil Rights Movement, therein remains a glaring distinction that separate the two as uniquely independent movements. “The Black Civil Rights Movement wasn’t designed to make White people like Black people. It was designed to have equal protection under the law. The ‘Muslim Civil Rights Movement,’ if we can call it that, seems to have this other agenda which is to be accepted by “White people,” said Johari Abdul-Malik, Imam of the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church, Virginia. This desire for social acceptance is a slippery slope, said Hagler. In seeking approval from those who the community feels holds the power, the community itself is at risk of losing the power and control over its movement. “If you give others the power, you don’t have your power. Your power does not stay with you when you give it to someone else. It’s gone,” he said. This desire toward approval or acclimation existed during the Civil Rights Movement as it does today with the largely immigrant American Muslim community. “Within certain pockets of the African American community, especially among some of the more well-to-do, there was also a desire to be accepted, to be acculturated, into the dominant society. It is true that many of our immigrant Muslim brethren reflect this same tendency, perhaps to an even greater degree. This is one of the manifestations of a colonized mind,” said Mauri Saalakhan, founder and director of the Peace and Justice Foundation in Silver Spring, Maryland. Movement II Pg 15

The American Muslim And The Colonized Mind Though he believes that American Muslims have begun to grasp the spirit of the Civil Rights movement to some degree, Reverend Graylan Hagler feels that the primarily immigrant Muslim population faces a deeper sociological issue that compounds the communities ability to fully engage in the type of civil disobedience that so effectively instituted change during the Civil Rights movement. “Immigrants that have looked forward to coming to the U.S. to be able to support their families and to be able to create a better life for their families and so therefore there is a perspective that comes particularly from first generation immigrants that you keep your head low and you work hard and that somehow the whole idea and myth around America is that if you work hard somehow you’ll be blessed. Somehow everything will work out,” he said. It is this false reality that gave rise to a fallacy in thought and as a result kept many immigrant communities in the United States quiet and complacent in the face of surmounting civil unrest.

External Factors Facing American Muslims In addition to the social challenges that American Muslims face in the United States, they must also face an onslaught of negative press from Muslim communities geographically across the world and arguably in a completely different sociologically era.

“It’s a matter of people being able to dramatize and demonstrate the indignities that take place,” said Hagler. If the Civil Rights Movement was simply an effort through letter writing, there would be no movement at all, he continued.

These external influences, that are often viewed as representative of the American Muslim, undermine the legitimacy of the representation of a common theology between Islam and the American belief system. The impact of a relatively small group of American Muslims suggesting that Shari’ah Law is similar to America’s constitutional belief system while Shari’ah Law is often most noticeably represented through lashings and stoning in the Muslim world, is quickly diminished.

Our argument is a first amendment argument while the Civil Rights movement was coming for the perspective of God Given rights or human rights that they wanted to have manifested in law,” noted Abdul Malik. “The Civil Rights Movement had significant theological underpinnings. As a result of that it spoke a common theology to the American people,” he continued. Without the ability to speak the language of theology in a way that is clear and not compounded by external factors, American Muslims face a quandary. Though they largely believe their Islamic faith encourages the values of justice on which the U.S. Constitution is based, their ability to speak in these terms is largely combatted by their own brethren worlds away. Seeking Knowledge Like Dr. King In 1959, nearly ten years before his assassination, Martin Luther King Jr. traveled to India to study the philosophy of Gandhi, inspired by his dedication to civil disobedience. He said he felt connected to the Indian people, “by the common cause of minority and colonial people...struggling to throw off racism and imperialism.” King’s dedication to seeking knowledge from others in situations like his brings to light the question of whether American Muslims are willing to take the same steps to learn from their African American neighbors who have, and to some extent continue to, face a plethora of social injustices. “Those members of the African American community who remain connected to their historical memory, can provide an enormous amount of context to the need and importance of collective struggle. They can also provide some inspiring insights on the degree of sacrifice needed to bring about positive societal

change,” said Saalakan. As the nations first African American president took the stage to memorialize a man who’s dedication to the Civil Rights Movement defined an era of American civil progress, he stood just miles away from a memorial of a former president who is best known for his emancipation of slavery, which nearly fifty years earlier that had served as the stage for King to share his dream. In that moment history reached full circle. During his memorial speech President Barrack Obama spoke of King’s teachings, a universal and timeless message that defined the Civil Rights Movement and remains relevant today. “And so at this moment, when our politics appear so sharply polarized, and faith in our institutions so greatly diminished, we need more than ever to take heed of Dr. King’s teachings. He calls on us to stand in the other person’s shoes; to see through their eyes; to understand their pain. He tells us that we have a duty to fight against poverty, even if we are well off; to care about the child in the decrepit school even if our own children are doing fine; to show compassion toward the immigrant family, with the knowledge that most of us are only a few generations removed from similar hardships.” A new era of civil disobedience and pressure on the legal system to guarantee the rights of all men has seemingly been awakened after a short but noticeable slumber. As Martin Luther King takes his permanent place on the memorial landscape of the nations capitol, the country is rising to his call once again and demanding the dreams of a new generation be heard, among them a growing American Muslim community that finds itself struggling through its turn in America’s continuing historical battle to uphold the freedoms granted by the U.S. Constitution.

through civic involvement. “No one can do more to defeat the false notion that Islam is a religion of violence and extremism than Muslims themselves. That is where the truth has to come from,” he said. In that spirit, CAIR awarded several unique American Muslims whose dedication and commitment to Islam and the values of the American constitution provided the narrative of the model American Muslim; preserving through adversity, standing up for justice and committing to serving and bettering the community through lifelong service. Among these awardees were: Jeanie Ree V. Moore, a senior at Yale University who has worked diligently toward upholding the values of religions freedom and pluralism through her academic endeavors. Dr. Kulsoom Abdullah, an Olympic weightlifting competitor as well as a PhD in Electrical and Computer engineering who worked to change Olympic regulations so she could wear clothing that adhered to Islamic rules during competition was awarded the John Hancock Award. Rais Bhuiyan, founder of the World Without Hate campaign after being shot in an hate crime post 9/11 and working diligently to fight for clemency for the assailant in the spirit of forgiveness was awarded the Peace and Justice award and Dr. Iqbal Unus, recipient of the Lifetime Service Award who has worked consistently toward the development of the Muslim community in the United States through the inception of the Muslim Students Association, it’s transition into the Islamic Society of North America as well as in numerous other organizations and projects over the past four decades. The Muslim Community Center, in Maryland was also awarded for their free medical clinic and their tireless efforts providing those in need free and essential medical care. Over the clink of silverware and through the boisterous applause, one message was heard loud and clear, CAIR’s mission toward fighting for civil rights would continue. Despite economic or socially troubling times, the Muslim community was willing to give even beyond what was hoped for, simply for the promise of a future that further strengthened the values of the American constitution through concentrated civic efforts like those promised by CAIR.

The Superiority of the First Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah By Shaykh ibn al-Uthaymeen,

“By the dawn and by the ten nights … “ [Al-Qur’ân 89:1-2]

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. May peace and blessings be upon the Chief of the Messengers, Muhammad.

Ibn Kathîr said that “the ten nights” referred to here are the ten days of DhulHijjah, and this opinion was also held by Ibn Abbâs, Ibn az-Zubair, Mujâhid and others.

Indeed it is a great favour and blessing from Allah that He has made for His righteous servants periods of time within which they can increase in good deeds to attain great rewards and one of these opportunistic periods is the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah (the final month of the Islamic Calendar, in which the hajj is performed). The excellence of these ten days have been mentioned in the Qur’ân and the Sunnah. 1. Allah says in the Qur’ân:

The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said: “There are no deeds as excellent as those done in these ten days.” They (the companions listening) said, “Not even Jihâd?” He, peace be upon him, said, “No, not even Jihâd except a man who goes forth endangering his life and wealth and does not return with anything.” [Recorded by al-Imâm al-Bukhârî] 3. Allah says: “ … and remember the name of Allah in the appointed days.” [Al-Qur’ân 2:203]

The Cobbler’s Hajj It is related that a noted Muslim scholar Abdullah bin Mubarak, had a dream while he was sleeping near the Holy Kaaba in Makkah. Abdullah bin Mubarak saw two angels’ descend from the sky, and start talking to each other. One of the angels asked the other: “Do you know how many people have come for Hajj this year?” The other angel replied: “Six hundred thousand have come for Hajj.” Abdullah bin Mubarak had also gone for Hajj that year. The first angel asked: “How many peo-

ple’s Hajj has been accepted?” The second angel replied: “I wonder if anyone’s Hajj has been accepted at all.” Abdullah bin Mubarak was grieved to hear that. He thought, “So many people have come from all over the world, crossing so many obstacles like rivers, jungles, desert and mountains, suffered so many hardships, and meeting so many expenses. Would their effort be wasted? Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) does not let anyone’s effort go to waste.” Abdullah bin Mubarak had thought only so far when he heard the other angel speak: “There is a cobbler in Damascus. His name is Ali bin al-Mufiq. He could not come for Hajj, but Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) has accepted his intention of

With regards to the noble companion Saîd bin Jubair, when the days of DhulHijjah began he would strive to increase in good actions with great intensity until he was unable to increase anymore. [Reported by ad-Dârimî]

Ibn Hajar says in Fath al-Bârî: “The most apparent reason for the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah being distinguished in excellence is due to the assembly of the greatest acts of worship in this period, i.e. salawât (prayers), siyâm (fasting), sadaqah (charity) and the hajj (pilgrimage). In no other periods do these great deeds combine.” WHAT ARE THE RECOMMENDED ACTS IN THESE DAYS? 1. The Prayer - It is highly recommended to perform the obligatory acts at their prescribed times (as early as possible) and to increase oneself in the superogatory acts, for indeed, this is what brings a person closer to their Lord. The Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, said:

Hajj. Not only will he get the reward for Hajj, but because of him, all the Hajjis will be rewarded.” When Abdullah bin Mubarak woke up, he decided he would go to Damascus and meet that cobbler whose Hajj intentions carried such a lot of weight. On reaching Damascus, Abdullah bin Mubarak inquired if anyone knew a cobbler named Ali bin al-Mufiq. The town people directed him to a house. When a man appeared from the house Abdullah bin Mubarak greeted him and asked his name. The man replied “Ali bin alMufiq.” Abdullah bin Mubarak asked: “What do you do for a living?” Ali bin al-Mufiq replied: “I am a cobbler.” Then Ali bin al-Mufiq asked the stranger’s name that had come looking for him.

Abdullah bin Mubarak was a very wellknown scholar of Islam, when Abdullah bin Mubarak introduced him self, the cobbler was anxious to find out why such a well known scholar was seeking him out. When Abdullah bin Mubarak asked Ali bin al-Mufiq to tell him if he had made any plans to go for Hajj. Ali bin al-Mufiq replied, “For thirty years I have lived in the hope of performing the Hajj. This year I had saved enough to go for Hajj, but Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) did not will it, so I couldn’t make my intention translate into action.” Abdullah bin Mubarak was eager to find out how could this man’s Hajj be accepted and blessed for all the people who went for Hajj that year when he didn’t go for Hajj in the first place. 3. Saying allahu akbar; lâ illaha illallah and alhamdulillâh - It is found in the aforementioned narration of Ibn ‘Umar:

“Upon you is to increase in your prostration to Allah, for verily you do not prostrate to Allah with even one prostration, except that He raises you in degrees and decreases your sins because of it.” [Reported by Muslim]

“So increase yourselves in saying lâ illaha illallah, allahu akbar and alhamdulillâh.”

2. Fasting - This has been mentioned as one of the acts of righteousness where Hanbada ibn Khâlid reports on the authority of his wife who reports that some of the wives of the Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

“Ibn ‘Umar and Abû Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with them both, used to go out to the markets in the ten days saying the takbîr causing the people to follow them in this action.”

The Prophet, upon whom be peace, would fast on the ninth of Dhul-Hijjah, the day of Âshûra and three days in every month. [Recorded by Ahmad, Abu Dâwûd, an-Nisâî and others] Al-Imâm an-Nawawî said that fasting in these ten days is extremely recommended.

Al-Imâm Bukhârî, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

He also said: “Umar ibn al-Khattâb used to say the takbîr in his minaret in Mina, whereupon the people of the mosque hearing ‘Umar, would start to say the takbîr as would the people in the markets until the whole of Mina was locked in glorifying Allah.” Ibn ‘Umar used to say the takbîr in Mina

during these ten days and after prayers, whilst on his bed, in his tent, in his gathering and whilst walking. What is recommended is to say the takbîr aloud due to the fact that ‘Umar ibn al-Khattâb, his son and Abû Hurayrah used to do likewise, may Allah be pleased with them all. Strive with us O Muslims in reviving this sunnah that has become lost in these times and it was almost forgotten, even amongst the people of righteousness and goodness all of which is unfortunately in opposition to what the best of generations were upon (preserving and maintaining the superogatory acts). There are a number of ways of making takbîr that have been narrated by the companions and their followers and from these ways is the following: Allahu akbar, allahu akbar, allahu akbar kabîrun. Allahu akbar, allahu akbar, lâ ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar, wallahu akbar,

wa lillahil hamd. Allahu akbar, allahu akbar, allahu akbar, lâ ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar, allahu akbar wa lillâhil hamd. 4. Fasting on the day of ‘Arafah - Fasting has been affirmed on the day of ‘Arafah, where it has been confirmed from the Prophet, peace be upon him, that he said regarding fasting on the day of ‘Arafah: “Be content with the fact that Allah will expiate for you your sins for the year before (the day of ‘Arafah) and the year after (the day of ‘Arafah).” [Reported by Muslim] However, whoever is at ‘Arafah as a pilgrim then fasting is not expected of him, as the Prophet, peace be upon him, stopped at ‘Arafah to eat. When Abdullah bin Mubarak persisted, Ali bin al-Mufiq revealed: “Once I went to see my neighbour’s house. His family was just sitting down for dinner. Although I was not hungry I thought my neighbour would invite me to sit down for dinner out of courtesy but I could see that my neighbour was grieved about something and wanted to avoid inviting me for dinner.” After some hesitation the neighbour told me: “I am sorry I cannot invite you for food. We were without food for three days and I could not bear to see the pain of hunger of my children. I went out looking for food today and found a dead donkey. In my desperation I cut out some meat from the dead animal, and brought it home so that my wife could cook this meat. It is Halal (lawful or permitted) for us because of our extreme condition of hunger, but I cannot offer it to you.” Ali bin al-Mufiq continued: “On hearing this, my heart bled with tears. I got up and went home, collected the three thousand dinars I had saved for Hajj, and gave my neighbour the money. I too had to go hungry but that was to save money for Hajj, but I thought helping my neighbour during his difficult times was more important. Although I still desire to go

Hajj is a journey that can ignite the soul to be reminded of the time it was created and takes it beyond the dimensions of this life to the time it will meet the creator.

And remember Abraham said: “My Lord, make this a City of Peace, and feed its people with fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day.” Holy Quran (2:126)

The sincere performance of Hajj can transcend a person’s day to day life into a spiritual awakening of the highest magnitude. A successful Hajj experience connects us to our creator and the greater compassion of humanity.

The Pilgrimage to Makkah is a sign of supreme significance. It was Prophet Ibraham’s unconditional commitment to Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) that led him to leave his wife Hagar and his infant son Ismael in this desolated desert.
