From Livin’ Da Fake Life to Living the Good Life Former Hip Hop Celebrities Speak to the Youth at NOVA By Wendy Diaz Muslim Link Contributing Writer
As the afternoon came to a close and darkness began to unravel in a cloudy sky, it seemed like the fervent crowd of youth outside The Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) Rachel M. Schlesinger Arts

Lines of people wrapped around the outside of the building while inside, busy security guards stood like bouncers outside a club, checking purses, throwing away bottled drinks, and patting down random students before they were allowed inside the Mary Collier Baker Theater. My Faith My Voice PSA Campaign Giving Ordinary Muslims A Voice By Yaman Shalabi
Muslim Link Staff Writer A one minute public service announcement produced in Northern Virginia called “My Faith My Voice” was launched August 30, 2010 in response to rising fears of Islam and Muslims in America. The online video features Muslims from all ages and backgrounds telling America not to fear Islam, and assuring the public that American Muslims are part and parcel of society. The PSA, spliced so a complete statement is read in parts by about a dozen Muslims from diverse backgrounds, reads: “In recent weeks, a lot of people have been telling you what to think about Muslims. They say you should fear me, suspect me, hate me. But the truth is I don’t want to impose my faith on you. Islam teaches me to respect all people, improve society, and stand up for justice for all. I am here and have been here for generations, wanting the same things you do: the chance to pursue life, liberty, peace, and happiness. I am an American. I am Muslim. This is My Faith. This is My Voice.” The idea for the PSA came from a group of Muslims in Northern Virginia as the
media frenzy over the Florida Qur’an burning and the New York Park51 masjid project reach a fever pitch. “We wanted to provide a platform for ordinary American Muslims who want to speak directly to Americans of other faiths,” said Hassan Ahmad of Northern Virginia, 34, manager for the My Faith My Voice PSA project. Sitting around a table during Iftar in Ramadan, the need to speak to the public about Islam in light of the increasing negative rhetoric kept coming up, said Ahmad. Thus, the idea for a PSA was an “organic growth” that came about from numerous discussions among friends and family. This project was a volunteer effort that was completed in a short amount of time. Some costs like filming and getting a domain name for the website were necessary, said Ahmad. In the last week of August during Ramadan, announcements about the PSA went out and film – led by Dawud Hawa -- took place on the 27th of Ramadan at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society in Sterling, Virginia. Ahmad said the location for the shoot was convenient since people were already going to the mosque because of Taraweeh prayer.

“I’m glad to be a part of something like this. It’s a unique opportunity to break stereotypes and generalizations by sharing our own personalities, thoughts, and opinions. It’s our voice,” said Mehmood. “What makes it different was that [the PSA] was not tied to any organization and had no spokesperson with an agenda,” explained Ahmad. Irfan Mehmood, 26, outreach coordinator in New Orleans, joined the grassroots
effort because he believes “it is a great proactive initiative for American Muslims to partake in.”

NoVa Politicians Engage Muslims at Annual Civic Picnic By Amalia Rehman
Muslim Link Contributing Writer It was a perfect Saturday afternoon, on October 2, 2010, when the ADAMS Center had their 10th Annual Civic Family Picnic at Lake Fairfax, in Reston. About 200 Muslims attended the barbeque along with a number of local politicians vying for the attention of Muslim voters. In attendance were Supervisor Andrea McGimsey, Councilmember Jasbinder Singh, who is the first Asian Indian American elected to that position, Senator Dave Marsden, Supervisor John Foust, Delegate Tag Greason, Supervisor Cathy Hudgins, Katherine Barnett representing her husband, Jeff Barnett for Congress, Delegate Jim Scott, Delegate Ken Plum, Delegate Tom Rust, Patricia Phillips, who is running for state senate in Loudon County, Senator Mark Herring and Keith Fimian for Congress. Katherine Barnett, who was standing in for her husband Jeff Barnett, who is a democrat running for Congress, stated that there were three major issues that tied
her husband to the Muslim community: “We are very strong advocates for religious tolerance ... and very strong advocates for small businesses... We need to support them... We need to give tax incentives to small businesses and we need to make the tax laws far less so that it is profitable to have a small business. And the third thing that is very personal to us, that is immigration. We need immigration reform in this country. Both my parents, when they emigrated, neither of them could speak English. When they came, my father had 12 dollars to his name. And he was able to build a business and he was able to have a path to citizenship. That’s what we need.” Keith Fimian, who is a Republican running for Congress stated the he is, “...looking forward with great interest to get to know the American Muslim community better. .. I want to make sure that our children have the same opportunities as we had growing up. The only way to do this is to make sure our liberties are preserved... Muslim Americans are as American as I am and [they are] a great asset to our country.” When asked his opinion about the negative portrayal of Muslims in the

I am a devout Christian and my faith informs me that turning the other cheek is the right way. ICM Community Digs Deep for Flood Relief During Ramadan By Yaman Shalabi
Muslim Link Staff Writer As the scale of the catastrophic flooding in Pakistan spread through news reports , members of The Islamic Center of Maryland in Gaithersburg felt obliged to do their part to help the relief effort. Being Ramadan, it was a prime time for raising funds for ICM’s own construction project and operating costs. Nonetheless, in between fundraising for the masjid itself, ICM leaders thought at least they could aim for collecting $20,000 in flood relief funds. Instead, the community donated $100,098.75. For the majority of Ramadan, ICM conducted fundraisers at four locations: ICM, University of Maryland Shady Grove, Thomas Farm Community Center in Rockville, and Casey Farm in
Gaithersburg. Sayed Naved, a member of the ICM board of trustees, pitched the idea of raising money to help people in Pakistan and gained approval from the board. To raise awareness of the flood’s scope and how badly Pakistan needed help, committee of around 25 people was formed, comprised mostly of high school and college students. Using powerpoint presentations, videos, and maps, the committee made sure to explain how relief money they collect would be used, and in whose hands it would be placed. Because of rampant corruption in Pakistan, Naved said the flood relief committee took extra care to choose only the most reputable charitable organizations to work with, those with a well established presence in Pakistan, as well as a low overhead, ensuring the maximum impact for the donated money.
Based on these criteria, Naved and the committee sent $26,598.75 to USA Edhi International, $5,000.00 to Mabel Foundation, $19,000 to Islamic Relief , $20,000 to Helping Hand for Relief & Development, $17,500 to New Life International, $5,000 to Sun Charity USA and $7,000 to the Imran Khan Foundation. “It is important to get it to the right people; we didn’t want corrupt people to take it and sell it at markets,” said Naved. Pakistan was hit by heavy rains in several regions starting in July and continuing through August triggering severe flooding. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Human Affairs, the flood affected more than 20 million people, killed more than 1,700 and destroyed about 1.9 million homes. These numbers are expected to increase due to the inability of aid workers to reach major
disaster sites. The flooding is Pakistan’s worst natural disaster in 80 years. “I will never forget the destruction and suffering I have witnessed, said Secretary –General of the UN, Ban Ki-moon, in a press conference following his visit to Pakistan. “In the past I have visited the scenes of many natural disasters around the world, but nothing like this. The scale of this disaster is so large. Nearly one out of ten Pakistanis has been directly or indirectly affected. One-fifth of the country is ravaged by floods. Thousands of towns and villages have simply been washed away. Roads. Bridges. Buildings. Crops. Millions of livelihoods have been lost.” “[These donations are] only the tip of the iceberg [to help Pakistan], a lot more still needs to be done and a lot more should be done,” said Naved.

A Taste of Diversity at ISWA’s International Bazaar By Wendy Diaz

helped a great deal. (And that goes to show) Our work as elders is paying off. Our future looks bright.”
The Islamic Society of the Washington Area (ISWA) hosted its 6th Annual International Bazaar on Sunday, October 3rd, 2010. Although in previous years, this event was hosted during sunny May or June, this year the atmosphere proved to be just as warm and inviting. Community members, volunteers, neighbors, and vendors gathered for this joyous occasion; the first outdoor celebration held in their new facility since its grand opening in May.
A community which prides itself on its various cultural representations and unity, ISWA’s diversity was as apparent this day as the flags which adorn the perimeter of the huge masjid. Visitors were scattered about the parking lot and lawn in front of the main entrance of the building almost blending into the colorful assortment of banners and streamers decorating the area designated for the celebration.
The International Bazaar was organized by the Sister’s Committee at ISWA headed by Zaimoon Hassan, who believes the timing of the event was a perfect way to celebrate Eid after the community’s first Ramadan in their newly expanded masjid. She and Zamal Husein, Board Treasurer, kept busy during the day, going back and forth between ticket sales and concession stands, while also mingling with visitors. Husein was most pleased with the amount of involvement from ISWA’s youth in the preparation of the event. “Young community members
There was a steady flow of traffic and guests arrived as early as 11am. ISWA’s Imam and Administrator, Faizal Khan, said he expected a crowd of about 1,000 people for this year’s bazaar. “Everyone looks forward to it every year,” he said. Vendors eagerly set up their canopies and tables as visitors began crowding the parking facilities. The open market consisted of jewelry, clothing, toys, incense, henna, African art, and much

ICM Showcases Many Flavors of Muslim Community By Hiba Akhtar
Muslim Link Staff Writer Bright colors in the form of clothing, flags, and balloons, came together with the aroma of ethnic foods to, together, take over the grounds of the Islamic Center of Maryland last Saturday afternoon, for ICM’s annual International Food Festival and Bazaar. Attendees spent the golden afternoon browsing through tables laden with information about the cultural heritage and background of their fellow Muslims. Volunteers worked in groups according to native country to set up attractive booths, proudly sporting national flags, books, forms of local dress, and, easily the crowd favorite, samples of food from home. “We all have a role in our community,” said Saman Farshori, who was facepainting for the afternoon. “As Muslims,
its important for us to show that we have support for each other and for the community, especially now, when our reputation is being questioned.” Cultural awareness was the goal for Bagus Adiyanto of the Indonesia table. He and his fellow volunteers, dressed in Indonesian cultural dress, spoke about Indonesia and promoted Indonesian Muslims Association of America (IMAAM,) a local cultural and religious group which is currently raising funds to establish their own mosque in Potomac, Md. The group also displayed a vast array of brightly colored sweets and appetizers boasting some of their homeland’s most tempting dishes, including coconut cake, easily a crowd favorite. For Zainab Abbas, the International Festival was not just about showcasing one’s own culture, but about promoting awareness about those of people close to
her. Abbas, who hails from Ghana, stood proudly with friend Hairat Adenekan, who put up a table about her native Nigeria. Together, the two cooked Jolloff Rice, chicken, beans with curry, friend plantains, and puff puff, a form of dessert. “Our cultures are very similar,” said Abbas. “And wherever we go we find people who are amazed that there are Muslims in countries like Nigeria and Ghana. There are not just Muslims in these countries, but there are masajid on every corner. Islam has a strong presence there.” Adenekan also added that she feared that the Nigerian-born Christmas bomber of 2009 affected the public’s view of her country, and that this was a greater motivator for her to promote Nigerian cultural awareness. ICM’s usual congregants were not the only attendees at the event, but visitors from outside the community gathered
there as well. Erna and Richard Inwood, a Dutch couple residing in the community, decided to stop by after Erna read about it in The Gazette newspaper. “It seemed like such an interesting concept so I decided to come by,” said E. Inwood, for whom learning about various cultures is a hobby. After strolling through the booths, Inwood asked to see the sister’s side of the prayer area and the Sunday school classrooms. “I was aware of the Islamic presence in many countries but wanted to learn more about it, and about the mosque.” The couple brought along friends Trevor and Genevieve Albequerque, their sisterin-law Rubina Noronha, and her two children.

and waiting at 7pm, no music blasted, no flashy lights illuminated the theater, the Outlawz didn’t walk onto the stage, “Freeway” wasn’t bopping his head with a “mike” in his hand, “Loon” didn’t wave his hands in the air, and “Napoleon” didn’t bust a rhyme. Instead, one by one, Brothers Basel, Amir Junaid Muhadith, and Mutah Beale presented a very different look at the reality of show business. Now Muslims, these three rappers each spoke about how Islam has brought them true peace and happiness. After a brief introduction which consisted of Qur’an recitation, a video outlining the Muslim Students’ involvement in the Pakistani Flood relief, and a greeting from the Muslim Students Association President, Yunos Amireh, a reality TV sketch was presented in which MSA members interviewed people in a local mall asking them would they prefer a luxurious Hollywood life or a plain, “real” life. This set the mood for the celebrity guests to give everyone a peek at the actuality of Hollywood life. Brother Basel, better known as Freeway, a hip hop artist from Roc-a-Fella Records, one of the most prominent recording companies in the world, accepted Islam at age 16 in his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in an area which he described as predominately Muslim. Basel, who went for Umrah during the first week of Ramadan this year, said he was accompanied by his father who accepted Islam only a year ago.
Audience member Sheree King enters into Islam by repeating the testimony of faith with Amir Junaid Muhadith. “I’m happy, really happy. That’s all I can say,” she said while tears filled her eyes. Photos by the author.
“When we saw the Prophet’s masjid, it moved me,” he said. He, unlike his comrades, has not completely left the record business because of personal struggles. “Fame is like a drug,” he said while describing the difficulty of leaving the rap game and establishing a stable existence. He said, “Allah is showing me what I’m doing is wrong, but testing me at the same time.” He ended his talk by advising the youth to steer clear of this type of lifestyle. “Be happy you have Islam, hold on to it and cherish it,” he said. Amir Junaid Muhadith, who converted and left the hip hop scene only two years ago and also accompanied Basel on his trip to Umrah, spoke next. This once famous artist, who rapped alongside celebrities like P-Diddy, Usher, and Toni Braxton, under the label Bad Boy Records, was almost unrecognizable with his long beard, sporting a white thobe and kufi. Muhadith, an eloquent speaker, urged the Muslim youth to stop detaching themselves from the characteristics that distinguish them from those who are not Muslim, and that they be proud of who they are and not take their religion for granted. He recalled his own struggles and journey to Islam. “I was suffering from a chronic disease, it was the dunya, and Islam was my cure,” he said. Muhadith reprimanded those people who fall short on their religious obligations, repeating, “Allah gave us the test and the answers, how do you fail?” He then directed his attention to the college students in the audience, “Are you going to give your professor an ‘A’, but give Allah a ‘C’ or a ‘D’?” He continued to encourage audience members to stop chasing the glitter and glamor of celebrity life and begin to focus on bettering themselves. “I’ve been spending the last two years trying to be like you, while you’re trying to be like who I was,” he concluded. Before Mutah Beale came onto the stage, a trailer of his upcoming documentary, “Napoleon: Life of an Outlaw,” was played, describing his involvement with

Tupac Shakur and his rap group, The Outlawz, and his conversion to Islam. It was a moving sneak-peek into the film, which describes the murder of Beale’s parents in front of his very eyes when he was only 3 years old. Beale, who lead a very turbulent life, also explained how Islam gave him the peace that he was seeking. “I had so much anger in me. It wasn’t until I read about Islam that I knew that the way I was living was wrong,” he said. While in the music business, he reached a high status and believed that he could achieve happiness through making money, but he confessed that in reality, the music industry had him living “like an animal.” Beale warned spectators about other famous rap artists who speak against Islamic beliefs in their lyrics, and recommended Muslims follow the tenets of Islam and take advantage of their time
to perform acts of worship. After the three speakers had time to share their stories, there was a question and answer session in which the three addressed questions about the music industry, spirituality, raising children, and finding peace within Islam. Imam Johari Abdul-Malik, the director of Outreach at the Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center and a Professor of Islamic Studies at NOVA, dismissed his Islamic Studies class early so he and some of his students could attend. “I think it’s important for Islam to find its voice in the American cultural matrix. because she thought it would be a great educational experience. “It’s important to have exposure to a lot of things, especially nowadays. You really need to hear multiple sides, you can’t go by what you see on TV, you have to go in and talk to people,” she explained. Caitlyn Kelleghan, a Program Assistant at the Catholic Charities Refugee Services in Arlington, wanted to attend to learn about Islam to build sensitivity and awareness for those she works with who are from the Islamic faith. She was impressed with the way the speakers presented their stories and was most moved by Muhadith’s speech. “I was impressed by the way they spoke. It seems that they have found peace, without a doubt,” she said. One audience member seemed to have found peace in Islam, as well, accepting her new faith that very night. After taking her Shahada, or testimony of faith, with Amir Junaid Muhadith’s assistance, Sheree King was embraced by female audience members. “I’m happy, really happy. That’s all I can say,” she said while tears filled her eyes. It was an emotional scene while a man who was once considered a star helped a woman embrace her new faith, a faith that he too embraced only a couple of years before.
As of this report, about 250 American Muslims from around the nation representing diverse ages, ethnicities, and professions uploaded their PSAs, sticking to the basic My Faith My Voice script but personalizing it, often with creativity and humor. “The real strength is the actual individual campaigns by individual Muslims and not the [original] PSA,” explained project manager Ahmad, who appears in the PSA and who uploaded his own personal video on the website.
“It’s a huge marketing campaign,” said Mehmood. “The more PSA’s we have the more accurately we, as American Muslims, can demonstrate that we’re a part of the American fabric. Let us assume there are 2-5 million Muslims in America. My goal is to get that entire American Muslim demographic.” The purpose of the PSA campaign is not to reach the media, said Ahmad, but to communicate with those who do not understand Islam and Muslims. The My
Faith My Voice effort has been covered by many news outlets, including CNN, NPR, and the LA Times. “I’m glad to be a part of something like this. It’s a unique opportunity to break stereotypes and generalizations by sharing our own personalities, thoughts, and opinions. It’s our voice,” said Mehmood. In the month that former DC mayor Adrian Fenty proclaimed Islamic Heritage Month, many have come out on this comfortable, sunny autumn day recognizing this landmark that represents one of the oldest masajid in the country. Originally located on 9th Street between P and R, Elijah Muhammad of the Nation of Islam founded what was then called Temple #4 in 1937. According to masjid historian Amir Muhammad, Elijah Muhammad “fled Detroit in 1935
temple temporarily came under the helm of Sultan Muhammad. After Elijah Muhammad was released from prison and the Nation of Islam began to grow in prominence, the center for command was moved to Chicago. The NOI temples in DC remained as more were built in other parts of the country. In 1960, the location of Temple #4 was moved to 4th street northwest. Although Muhammad was no longer in the city, he had various people take charge of the temples including Malcolm X who, for six months was minister of Temple #4 in 1963 before leaving the NOI. Following the death of Elijah Muhammad in 1975, control of the Nation of Islam was passed into the hands of his son Imam Warith Deen Muhammad who decided to end the use of the term “Nation of Islam” and to bring those in the organization into following the sunnah of traditional Islam.
In the month that for mer DC mayor Adrian Fenty proclaimed Islamic Heritage Month, many came to celebrate the 50th anniversar y of Masjid Muhammad – a landmark that is one of the oldest masajid in the countr y. in fear for his life because people were trying to kill him so he came down here to continue his work. DC became the base he operated from.” Along with Temple #4 there were other temples Elijah Muhammad opened and ran in the city. He was arrested in 1942 for allegations of subversive activity; during this time the
Under his direction the “temples” became masajid of which Masjid Muhammad is one out of over 200 in the country. Over the years Masjid Muhammad came into its own and established various programs including a chapter of the Boys and Girls Scouts and an Islamic school system. Originally called Islamic
University while a part of the Nation of Islam, the school later became the Clara Muhammad School and covered K-12 in the homeschooling curriculum. Additionally, they soon began to work towards building relations with other religious groups. “We were working on interfaith dialogues long before it was the ‘thing’ to do” said Tariq Suleiman, a longtime member of the community. Less than five years after W.D. Muhammad gained his leadership position, the organization became active in making Islam known while also allowing its own membership to hear directly from various religious leaders. “We had one of the first Muslim interfaith activities in the country in 1978. It was a Jewish event with Imam [W.D.] Muhammad”, says Amir Muhammad. “A lot of Muslims questioned us doing that.” One of the highlights of the day of celebration came in the form of a theatrical performance about the life of Omar Ibn Sayyid – played by Ahmad Kenya – a West African Islamic scholar cast into slavery.
Against a backdrop of Fulani designed fabrics, props of Arabic etched in tablets, iron shackles and a yoke made to hold humans, Kenya brought to life the true story of the Arabic and Qur’anic scholar who, at 37 years old, was snatched from his homeland and sold into slavery. Inspired by the autobiography of Ibn Sayyid, the hour-long one-man show was full of raw emotion, anger, fear, apprehension, sadness complete with tears and only a brief moment of happiness at the start. The community of Masjid Muhammad have high hopes for the direction being taken especially with the new Imam who is expected to arrive in early October. “[The Imam] is recently retired from the military, he was a chief master sergeant so he knows about structure and how to delegate responsibility,” said member Ajab Abdus-Samad. “We expect to see growth, growth, growth in the coming years.”

We learned so much about various countries, and I really wanted to try Indonesian food, which I did.”

Muslim attendees were handing out flyers quoting Mr. Fimian’s statement to Congressman Gerry Connolly to oppose the building of the Muslim community center near the World Trade Center site. The flyer quoted Mr. Fimian from his website: www. KeithFimian.com as stating, “The debate about building a mosque near the World Trade Center site isn’t a question of law or religious freedom. It’s simply a question of respect and compassion for the victims of the World Trade Center attacks and their families.” Additionally, there was

Away from the booths, the bazaar was made up of local vendors selling everything from clothing and headscarves to books and paintings. She also collected names of ICM’s female community members who would be interested in attending a workshop in ICM about self-breast exams and facts about breast cancer. “People often do not realize how important this information is,” said Quasem, who explained that Montgomery County offers many health services to minority groups who are often dealing with diseases such as Diabetes, Osteoporosis, Hepatitis B., and tobacco dependency. “Our goal is to eliminate health disparities within the Asian community, and many Muslims belong to this subgroup.”

For attendee Najam Shaikh, this table was especially important, as she guessed that many of ICM’s female community members were not fully informed on the prevalence of breast cancer and the opportunity for early detection. Late into the afternoon, when volunteers rolled up their posters and took down their flags, the goal of cultural appreciation seemed to have left its mark, illustrated through the image of two young headscarfclad girls, one Pakistani and the other African, holding hands and walking toward the playground.

This event was indeed fun for the whole family. Not only was it an opportunity for the Muslims to gather and spend time, but a great way of reaching out to the non-Muslim neighbors, as well. As Imam Faizal said, “It’s our policy to have ISWA open to all. We want to give everyone an opportunity to celebrate and vend and get together.”
For the children and the young at heart there were also snow cones and a moon bounce with slides to enjoy. However, the highlight of the day for the kids was the

American Islamic College in Chicago Re-opens after 10-Year Hiatus Islamtoday.net September 2, 2010 The American Islamic College in Chicago is set to be open for classes this upcoming week. Last open in 2001, it has been nearly a decade since the college has offered any classes. “The whole of America needs an Islamic institution of Islamic thought,” said Ali Yurtsever, a former research scholar at Georgetown University, who is overseeing the effort to re-open the college. “If you don’t have Islamic colleges, then people are misled, they’ll easily be deceived and the clash will continue to grow.” Currently, more than half of the students enrolled in classes slated to begin next week are non-Muslim. Regardless of student size and demographic, the main goal of the college appears to be creating a space for dialogue and discussion. Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary general of the Organization of the Islamic Conference is the Chairman of the college’s Board of Trustees. He said a rising tide of Islamophobia is being caused by lack of knowledge, and added that the college fulfills a moral obligation of American Muslims.
“Today, American Muslims have a role and duty to lead the way through sound moral conduct and active participation in positive political movements toward the creation of a just, peaceful and righteous society.” The American Islamic College was established in 1981 as a private, notfor-profit, four-year college offering programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in Arabic and Islamic Studies. In March 1983, the college purchased its present landmark building on Lake Shore Drive, and in September 1983 began its first academic semester. In 1991 the College was granted the authority to offer the Associate of Arts degree in addition to the Bachelor of Arts degree. It has closed and reopened several times during its history. Scott Alexander, director of the CatholicMuslim Studies Program at Catholic Theological Union, argues that until now, it simply had not been the right time for such an institution. It failed to capture the imagination of Chicago’s largely immigrant Muslim community when it was founded nearly 30 years ago. Its style of governance, which had been directed from the OIC oversees, also did not win support from many American Muslims.
American Islamic College campus facility located in Chicago, Illinois. Photo from aicusa.edu. “Historically, it was probably premature because the immigrant community was very new and not ready to take that step,” Alexander said. “A paternalistic understanding of what Muslims in America needed from the traditional Muslim world … just doesn’t work. It needs to be directed locally.” Now the college is re-opening under local direaction, after a decade-long hiatus,
and it has hopes of becoming a four-year accredited institution. -----------------------------------------------Sources: Soyoung Kwak, “American Islamic College Set to Reopen “ Chicagoist October 2, 2010, Manya A. Babri Verdict: Shocked Community Denounces, Fringe Groups In Support TCN News October 4, 2010
the verdict and indicated they will [appeal to the] Supreme Court.
(New Delhi) A Couple of days after a united shock and denouncement of the Ayodhya verdict, elements from within the Muslim community are coming up, showing support to the verdict, some going one step ahead and announcing donations for the Ram Temple.
However, after [an] initial shock period some tiny elements are publicly announcing their different views on the verdict and a Shia group has declared [their intention] to give Rs 15 lakh [$33,654 USD] for construction of the Ram Temple at the site.
The September 30, 2010 Allahabad High Court verdict in the 60-year-old Babri Masjid title suit was received by the entire Indian Muslim community with a huge shock and denouncement. Some key organizations like All India Muslim Personal Law Board and Sunni Wakf Board went public about their feeling over
Announcing a donation of Rs.15 lakh for starting the construction of the muchdebated temple at Ayodhya, a Shia youth organization, Shia Hussaini Tigers, opposed any move to appeal against the Allahabad High Court verdict. “We will make a formal request to the Sunni Central Waqf Board not to go into appeal
against the high court verdict, and to bring an end to the long pending dispute once and for all,” group chief Shamil Shamsi told media on October 2. He also [said] a delegation of the group will approach the All India Muslim Personal Law Board with the same appeal. A special three-judge bench of the Allahabad High Court’s Lucknow bench on September 30 ruled, with a majority verdict, that the place where the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya stood, before it was razed by Hindu mobs in 1992, was indeed the birthplace of Hindu god Ram. The bench also ordered that the disputed land be divided equally among Muslims, Hindus and Nirmohi Akhara [a hindu sect]. The court also said that Ram Lalla
[an idol] will not be removed from its present place. Meanwhile, Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys Association Delhi Chapter has said that the verdict RamjanmbhoomiBabri Masid dispute has strengthened Muslims’ faith in Indian Constitution and judicial system. “Ever yone Just Wants to Kill People at any Cost” What Adam Winfield, one of the U.S. soldiers accused of killing civilians in Afghanistan, told his father By Mark Benjamin Salon.com October 03, 2010 “Salon” -- One of the five U.S. soldiers accused of murdering Afghan civilians in a grisly case now unfolding in Washington state sent Facebook messages to his father early this year in which he claimed to be mortified that his fellow soldiers had purposely killed a civilian. In the messages, Spc. Adam Winfield also indicated that the murder was an open secret among the members of his platoon, and that no one seemed to think it was a big deal. Winfield wrote his father, Chris, on Feb. 14 about his concern that two members of his platoon had the previous month murdered “some innocent guy about my age just farming.” The correspondence from that day illustrates the young
soldier’s horror at the murder, and also reveals a shocking indifference about the killing among the other troops in his platoon. “Well, it was two guys who did it actually killed the dude (sic) but the whole platoon knew about it,” Winfield wrote to his father. “Theres (sic) no one in this platoon that agrees this is wrong.” Winfield is one of five soldiers in an Army Stryker Brigade from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, near Tacoma, that the Army has accused of being involved in the murders of at least three civilians in Afghanistan between January and May. Details have emerged about rampant drug use in Winfield’s platoon of around 30 soldiers, and of troops posing for photos with corpses. Soldiers in the unit say the
alleged ringleader in the murders, Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs, severed and collected body parts, including teeth and fingers, apparently to make a necklace. Members of the platoon allegedly used drop weapons to cover up their crimes. It’s too early to blame what occurred in Winfield’s platoon on soldiers’ moral compasses spinning out of control after repeated, violent tours in Iraq and Afghanistan (Gibbs was on his third combat tour). But it is easy to imagine that seemingly endless wars contributed to the moral turpitude Winfield described to his father. “There are no more good men left here,” Winfield wrote in the Feb. 14 exchange released to Salon by Chris Winfield through his attorney, Neal Puckett. At one
point, Winfield seemed to echo Sen. John Kerry’s haunting 1971 testimony about Vietnam when Kerry asked rhetorically, “How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?” “I started to think whether I should quit and just give up because it’s stupid to get smoked in Afghanistan,” Winfield wrote. “The Army really let me down when I thought I would come out here to do good maybe make some change in this country I find out that its all a lie (sic).” Winfield said he raised concern about the January murder with someone there, but received a blasé response. “Well I talked to someone and they told me this stuff

committed at least two more murders in the months that followed. The Army has now implicated Adam Winfield in one of those later killings.
Adam Winfield also wrote that he feared for his own safety if he reported the murder, harkening back to the fragging incidents in Vietnam. “Pretty much the whole platoon knows about it,” Winfield wrote about the January killing. “It’s okay with all of them pretty much. Except me,” he added. “I want to do something about it the only problem is I don’t feel safe here telling anyone.”
Winfield’s phone records, reviewed by Salon, show phone calls to those numbers taking place between 3:43 p.m. and 4:18 p.m. on Feb. 14. Mostly, Winfield says, he left messages, though he also talked to a sergeant in his son’s unit’s office. “I said my son is in [Stryker Brigade] and he told me there is a rogue sergeant over there committing murders,” Winfield told Salon. “I was pretty upset. I was frantic.”
“The Army had the opportunity and they dropped the ball,” Chris Winfield said. “The Army has the blood on their hands on those two [later] murders. They want to sweep it under the carpet and make it disappear,” he claimed. “I’m not going to let them do that.”
Chris Winfield has said that he made multiple calls to the Army (including at least four to various offices at Fort

Arlington Opts Out of Federal Immigration Enforcement Program Virginia officials signed up for the program, which By Christy Goodman Washington Post September 28, 2010
The Arlington County Board has unanimously passed a resolution to opt out of the federal Secure Communities program, which uses the fingerprints of people in custody for other reasons to identify illegal immigrants. “It is not the role of Arlington County law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws,” the resolution states. Last spring, Virginia officials signed up for the program, which shares any arrested individuals’ fingerprints with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, without asking Arlington law enforcement’s opinion, said board member Walter Tejada, the resolution’s sponsor. “We are not defending criminals,” Tejada said at Tuesday’s board meeting. However, he continued, “People who have not commited serious crimes...are
finding themselves in this web” leading to deportation. The resolution states that Arlington strives to be a diverse and inclusive community, with more than one-third of the population belonging to a minority group and one-quarter being born outside of the country.
While the county supports “meaningful and comprehensive immigration reform,” it will also protect civil rights and liberties, the document states. UPDATE 8:01 p.m.: We’ve received a response to this development from Brian Gottstein, a spokesman for Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, a major supporter of the Secure Communities program. “The program is called Secure Communities because that is exactly what it promotes. It is unfortunate that Arlington has decided not to participate in a program that deports illegal aliens who are convicted of crimes in our communities. Because this law enforcement initiative is targeting those committing crimes, it has strong

Meanwhile, Arlington Sheriff Beth Arthur and County Chief of Police Douglas Scott have issued a joint statement, seemingly supporting the county’s actions but also indicating it will not change how they have interacted with immigrants. Their statement: “While we understand that the Secure Communities program has created some concerns, all residents and visitors have the right to County services and programs, including public safety protections. As Arlington County’s chief law enforcement
officers, it is not our desire or intent to enforce federal immigration law. Nothing has changed in the way we interact with our immigrant residents. In our normal day-today work, our Sheriff’s deputies and our police officers have not and will not --monitor, detain, interview, or investigate a person solely for the purpose of determining their immigration status. Action by our law enforcement officers is based upon reasonable suspicion or probable cause of criminal activity, and we have a strong policy against racial profiling which prohibits our deputies and officers from taking action based solely on that individual’s race, ethnicity, or national origin.”

Calling to the Path of Repentance One of the best ways to win people’s hearts to righteousness is to highlight the path of repentance: the path of asking Allah’s forgiveness, making atonement, and compensating for sins by performing good deeds for the benefit of other people. When calling people to return to Islam, it is wise to emphasize Allah’s forgiveness. No one should ever despair, even those who have returned to the same sin and repented for it a hundred times. Instead, they should repent and never weary of seeking forgiveness. Satan would inspire us to despair and give up on forgiveness. We should be even more resolute in asking Allah to forgive us, praying to Him with humility.
When reminding people of their sins, it is good to mention positive action as well, by emphasizing the value of performing good deeds. Allah says: “Surely, good deeds wipe away evil deeds.” [Sūrah Hūd: 114] Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has informed us of various kinds of good deeds that can atone for our sins. For instance, Abū Hurayrah relates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A prostitute was forgiven when she passed by a dog near a well. It was panting and dying of thirst. She removed her shoe and tied it to her scarf. Then she drew out some water for it from the well. Allah forgave her for that. [Sahīh al-Bukhārī (3321) and Sahīh Muslim (2245)]
Abū Hurayrah also relates: The Prophet said: “One a man was walking and he was extremely thirsty. He descended into a well and drank from it. When he came out, he saw a dog panting and eating mud to relieve its thirst. The man thought to himself: This creature has reached the same state that I was in. So he went down the well again, filled his shoe with water, and gave the dog water to drink. Allah was grateful to him and forgave him.” The people asked: “O Messenger of Allah! Do we receive rewards on account of beasts?” He replied: “There is a reward for being charitable to anything with a living heart.” [Sahīh al-Bukhārī (2363) and Sahīh Muslim (2244)]
to be for helping our fellow human beings! Allah is most gracious and He never lets any of our good deeds come to naught. For this reason, being kind, generous, and magnanimous to others is one of the best ways to seek Allah’s forgiveness.
How much more can we expect the reward

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “Once a man was walking down a road when he came upon a branch of thorns in the middle of the way. He moved it to one side and cleared the path, so Allah was grateful to him and forgave him.” [Sahīh al-Bukhārī (654) and Sahīh Muslim (1914)]
I Want To Enter Paradise “Allah Would Replace You Question: My question is short. I want to enter Paradise. I want to strive to control my self (my nafs), I want to kiss my mother’s hand every day, I want to keep away from whims and desires and from the Shaytaan, I want Allaah to call me a devoted slave on the Day of Resurrection. I want to love my brothers, and I want my faith to keep increasing. What should I do? Praise be to Allaah. We ask Allaah to make you steadfast in adhering to the truth, and to make your hopes come true, and to make you one of those who turn to Him and who know the truth, defend it and adhere to Islam. The things you mention in your question indicate that you have a sound and pure nature, and a great desire to achieve great things and to give everyone his rights. These are great hopes that can be achieved through faith, as it was narrated that Sufyaan al-Thawri said: Faith is not wishes or pretense, rather it is what settles in the heart and is proven by actions.” So we will discuss the matter of faith
and how important it is in becoming a devoted slave, pleasing and honouring one’s parents and achieving the victory of Paradise. Whoever seeks to achieve great things has to stay up at night (worship). Hence al-Fudayl said: “You hearts can never taste the sweetness of faith until they shun worldly pleasures.” And he also said, “If you cannot pray qiyaam at night and fast during the day, then know that you are deprived.” The sincere believer has a heart like a burning coal, hence it was narrated by al-Haakim in his Mustadrak and alTabaraani in his Mu’jam with a saheeh isnaad that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Faith wears out in your heart as clothes wear out, so ask Allaah to renew the faith in your hearts.”
>> PARADISE Pg 21
With a People Who Sin…”
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “I swear by Him in whose hand is my soul, if you were a people who did not commit sin, Allah would take you away and replace you with a people who would sin and then seek Allah’s forgiveness so He could forgive them.” [Sahīh Muslim (2687)] Allah already has a creation which is sinless. He has the angels who “never disobey Allah in what He commands them and carry out whatever they are told to do.” [Sūrah al-Tahrīm: 6] they glorify Allah without fail. Some arer standing in prayer, some are bowing, and some are in prostration saying: “Glory be to the the possessor of the dominion and its possessions! Glory be to the possessor of might and irresistible power. Glory be to the Living One who never dies!” The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “I see and hear what you do not. The heavens heaved, and they have a right to do so, since there is not a place the width
of a handspan that is not occupied by an angel prostrating his forehead to Allah.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhī (2312) and Sunan Ibn Mājah (4190)] In spite of all this, Allah in His wisdom wanted to create beings besides the angels – human beings who would need to be guided to the proper path and who were capable of going astray. Allah says: “Lo! We have shown him the way, whether he be grateful or disbelieving.” [Sūrah al-Insān: 3] This is the nature upon which Allah created the human being. It is unavoidable that people will err. Therefore Allah has permitted us to ask His forgiveness. Indeed, He exhorts us to do so, and He promises us His forgiveness. We should make it a habit to seek Allah’s forgiveness as often as we can. Constancy >> REPLACE Pg 22
October 8th - October 21st , 2010 PARADISE >> continued from pg 20 The believer’s heart may sometimes feel overwhelmed by clouds of sin. This was portrayed to us by the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) when he said: “There is no heart that does not have clouds like the clouds that cover the moon. When the cloud covers it, it is dark, and when the cloud moves away it shines.” Narrated by al-Tabaraani in al-Awsat, and classed as saheeh by al-Albaani. So the believer’s heart is sometimes covered with a cloud and its light is hidden, and it remains dark and lonely, but if he strives to increase his store of faith and seeks the help of Allaah, that cloud goes away and the light in his heart starts to shine again. Hence one of the salaf said: “It is part of a person’s smartness to check on his faith and be aware of what affects it.” It is also part of a person’s smartness “that he recognizes how the Shaytaan whispers to him.” So he has to come back to faith. If you come back to faith and do as it requires, then you will achieve what you want. We will tell you of a basic principle which will let you know when faith is present and when it is not. Imam Ibn al-Jawzi said: “O you who are turned away, O you who are deprived of meeting your loved ones, if you want to know how you stand before the king, then look at how you are spending your time and what work you are assigned to do. How many people stand at the door of the king, but no one enters except the one whom he cares for. Not every heart is fit to draw close, not every heart can be filled with love, not every wind is like the morning breeze.” If a person want to know how he stands before Allaah and how he stands in relation to His commands and prohibitions, let him look at himself and see what he is preoccupied with. If he is busy with da’wah and with saving people from the Fire, striving to attain Paradise, helping the weak and needy, honoring his parents, then let him rejoice in the fact that he is close to the King of kings, for Allaah does not help anyone to do good except those whom He loves. But if he is has no interest in da’wah, dislikes the daa’iyahs and does not do good things, if he is preoccupied with this world and its gains, and with gossip and asking too many questions, whilst
ISLAM | 21 not doing much or following his whims and desires, let him know that he is far from Allaah and has been deprived of that which will bring him closer to Paradise, because Allaah says in His holy Book (interpretation of the meaning): “Whoever desires the quick-passing (transitory enjoyment of this world), We readily grant him what We will for whom We like. Then, afterwards, We
the ultimate aim and loftiest purpose of man: “And I (Allaah) created not the jinn and mankind except that they should worship Me (Alone)” [al-Dhaariyaat 51:56 – interpretation of the meaning)] 3 – You should always set your sights on the highest degrees, and make your goal in life to earn the pleasure of Allaah, and strive to attain the victory of Paradise, or to attain the highest Firdaws. You should

And whoever desires the Hereafter and strives for it, with the necessary effort due for it (i.e. does righteous deeds of Allaah’s obedience) while he is a believer (in the Oneness of Allaah Islamic Monotheism) — then such are the ones whose striving shall be appreciated, (thanked and rewarded by Allaah)” [al-Isra’ 17:18-19]
strive as hard as you can to achieve these lofty aims.

“Faith wears out in your heart as clothes wear out, so ask Allaah to renew the faith in your hearts.” position in all kinds of good deeds, to be a devoted slave of Allaah and to honor your parents, and you are seeking Paradise, then you have to do the following: 1 – You have to revive the faith in your heart. Faith is what will bring the Muslim everything he seeks in this world and in the Hereafter. Faith is the key to all goodness and locks the door to all evil. The means of reviving and strengthening faith in one’s heart are many and varied, including doing a lot of acts of worship and righteous deeds. 2 – You must turn to your Lord sincerely, as it says in the report: “If My slave turns to me inwardly and outwardly, I will turn the hearts of My slaves to him with love and mercy.” Allaah has made worship
righteous people, because the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “A man will follow the religion of his close friend, so let each one of you look at whom he befriends.” Narrated by Abu Dawood and al-Tirmidhi with a hasan isnaad. Good friends are one of the best means of helping you to obey Allaah and to avoid sin and error. 7 – Doing a lot of righteous deeds which will bring you happiness in this world and in the Hereafter. 8 – Praying qiyaam al-layl, making du’aa’ in the time just before dawn. The feet of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to swell because of his desire to be a thankful slave, even though Allaah had forgiven his
previous and future sins. 9 – Persisting in reading a portion of Qur’aan daily, and other dhikr that helps you to think and ponder the meanings of the Qur’aan. 10 – Striving to spread the word and make da’wah for the sake of Allaah, and working for Islam as much as possible. If you want to reach the status of devoted slave for which you long, then be as Allaah commanded His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Say (O Muhammad): Verily, my Salaah (prayer), my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for Allaah, the Lord of the ‘Aalameen (mankind, jinn and all that exists)” [al-An’aam 6:162] Being a devoted slave of Allaah means declaring one’s devotion and belonging to the Lord, which can only be achieved by applying this aayah, so that we are for Allaah, the Lord of the Worlds, in all our affairs. Being a devoted slave of Allaah can only be fully achieved in this manner; it can only be achieved by worshiping Allaah in the fullest sense of the word, which means making our living and dying, and all our movements, for Him alone. So we only speak that which is pleasing to Allaah; we only do that which is pleasing to Allaah; we focus our intention in these words and deeds only on Allaah. Worship should not be reduced to merely raising and lowering our heads at certain times, or giving a few pennies every once in a while, or fasting a few days each year, or moving our lips to say a few words and dhikrs. Hence the deeds that lead to this status – of being a devoted slave – are innumerable and may take many shapes in all aspects of our lives and the places where we live. This is by the bounty of Allaah towards us and towards all people. Just look, in every place where you find yourself and every moment that comes to you, for that which will please Him, and what you think He wants to see you doing, and do it. Then you will be a devoted slave. Finally, we ask Allaah to accept righteous deeds from us and from you, and to gather us and you in His mercy with the Prophets, siddeeqs, martyrs and righteous, and those are the best of companions. -----------------------------------------------Source: www.IslamOnline.net

We should make this part of our life’s mission. A young lady once contacted me and complained about all the difficulties and tribulations she was facing in her life. I suggested to her that she should focus on helping others, like her parents, siblings, and elders. A year later, she called me up again to tell me how happy she was, and

previous time the sin was committed, but will only hold the sinner to account for the present occurrence. Forgiveness is something Allah gives, and He does not revoke what He gives. Once a sin is wiped from our records, it is wiped away for good. Someone asked me about the hadith: “Committing a sin after repenting for it is worse than committing it seventy times before repenting.” I told him that this hadith is unauthentic. It is not established with a sound chain of transmission back to the Propjet (peace
be upon him). Moreover, the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah are quite clear that no matter how often a person commits a sin and repents, Allah will accept that person’s repentance. Whenever someone beseeches Allah’s forgiveness in earnest, Allah will forgive that person’s sins without reservation. -----------------------------------------------Source: http://en.islamtoday.net/artshow426-3787.htm

Letter to the Editor Special Kids Bring Light, Energy to Eid Celebration As a volunteer [at the Eid celebration for children with special needs, as reported in “A Special Eid for Special Children” in the September 24 issue of the Muslim Link] and a Sister to a brother who has Down Syndrome, this was one of the most successful celebrations. I’m glad to have been part of the Eid celebration and Inshallah there is more and more to come. Sari [one of the children pictured in the Muslim Link article] is an amazing kid, I can’t explain how much light, energy, and love he brought to the room. Afiaa Alwazir, Virginia -----------------------------------------------I have a special needs niece. I had no idea about this event! I wish I knew about it. I know she always gets left out on Eid because there isn’t much for her to do. She actually usually goes to school because the activities there are fun for her as opposed to staying home and celebrating Eid. I am definitely planning on taking her to this event if it’s held again next year. PLEASE make sure to advertise! Jazakumu Allahu Khayran. Sr. Rasha, Maryland ------------------------------------------------
Why Not Make Six Flags Eid A Bridge Building Event? Assalamu ‘alykum wa rahmatullah, Here’s an idea for ICNA’s leadership and for other Muslim organizations sponsoring “Muslim Family Day” at Six Flags [as reported in “Media, Rain Fail to Dampen Spirits at Muslim Family Day” in the September 24 issue of the Muslim Link], celebrated shortly after the first day of Shawwal (day of ‘Id al Fitr). If this [event] is to counter the widespread Islamophobia and religious hatred and intolerance heaped upon the Muslims of late, [as evidenced by] the Park51 [masjid] project in Manhattan and the “Qur’an burning” stunt, why have “Muslim Family
Day” reserved for only Muslims? Why not invite and open Six Flags also to “friends, neighbors and sympathizers” of the Muslim community to this festive occasion so that they can be part and parcel of our annual Eid celebration? Let them come, see, and enjoy this beautiful festival with us! I think this is a good idea whose time has come. We should not be isolating ourselves from the community in which we live. Let us share our feasts, festivals, religious rites, bazaars, etc. with the local people in our community so they can get to know us better, understand that Muslims are regular people just like them, working hard and struggling like everyone else. This integrative approach will pay dividends in terms of neighborly and community relations. Our openness and respect for those in the community in which live will change minds, build bridges and open channels of communication to enhance mutual understanding. This approach can improve and foster better relations between Muslims and the local community and could drive back and and extinguish the forces of intolerance, hate and Islamophobia. Let’s do it. Mohamad K. Yusuf, Washington DC ------------------------------------------------
Since When Is Farrakhan A Muslim Leader? I was very disappointed that our Muslim leadership decided to showcase Nation of Islam’s Minister Farrakhan as an “African American Muslim” leader to the entire world [see “New Coalition of AfricanAmerican Muslims Says Racism Part of NYC Masjid Conflict” in the September 24 issue of the Muslim Link]. To put him on the same stage at the National Press Club, complete with his “Fruit of Islam” guards, under the banner of yet another newly sprouted acronym group called CAAM – the Coalition of
25
African American Muslims – was highly irresponsible and indicates that for added political punch, our Muslim leaders will put just about anyone on stage to represent the Muslim community – be he a bigoted racist, a corrupt scandal ridden politician, or anyone else. Despite proclamations from [some of our national organizations], Farrakhan has not changed his views, and neither has the Nation of Islam. Look at the NOI’s official newspaper, the Final Call. Here is an excerpt from a column in a September 2010 article in the Final Call: “I’ve learned that which I’m bearing witness to, from the very public knowledge and wisdom of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, that he met the Supreme Being. Then I learned more from the Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan, who is backed by both of Them! I studied him and worked to help him. “Minister Farrakhan has been given the overwhelming power to produce the evidence of this truth, which he has been teaching. Minister Farrakhan has made his position very clear and very public. He has proven it and has helped others to bear witness of this truth.” Do our leaders want some more, or would they prefer I not continue? Here is a statement of the beliefs of the Nation of Islam, on their official website at http:// noi.org/muslim_program.htm . You’ll need to scroll to the bottom. 12. WE BELIEVE that Allah (God) appeared in the Person of Master W. Fard Muhammad, July, 1930; the longawaited “Messiah” of the Christians and the “Mahdi” of the Muslim. A Muslim leader? Shame on CAAM. Shame on them for making light of heresy. Shame on CAAM selling the pure belief in Allah for fleeting political impact. And shame on the Muslim Link for printing this story!
