A new Islamic high tech product just introduced to the United States blending sacred tradition with point-and-click ease will debut at the DC Hidayah Conference the weekend of August 7 in the nation’s capital.

Called the “One Touch Mushaf Teacher”, the product is an actual printed and leather bound copy of the Qur’an in the standard Medina printing facility format, with the addition of icons on the sides and bottom of every page. Using a special optical reading pen that comes with the product, users can simply touch verses or parts of verses to hear the recitation of their favorite qari, listen to tafseer of the ayah, hear different ways of reciting the ayah, listen to the translation in a language of their choice, and other features. The pen holds 2 GB of memory, has a USB port to download additional audio files for each ayah, and an audio jack for private or group listening. The pen recognizes the ayahs and icons clicked due to invisible marks that cover every page of this Qur’an. The unique blend of on-demand information with an actual printed, high quality copy of the Qur’an makes the product as versatile as Amazon’s Kindle “electronic book”, and as easy and familiar as any Qur’an on the shelf. Developed by an Islamic scholar in Syria who also mass produced one of the first color-coded “tajweed” Qur’ans, the One Touch Mushaf Teacher is exclusively distributed in the United States by UFI, Inc. based in Springfield, Virginia, according to Vice-President Hossam Abu Hamza Hijjee. “Because we want everyone to own one, we are offering this at $185 for the large copy of the Qur’an, and $150 for the smaller size,” he said, adding that they sold out of the product at a recent convention they attended in Virginia. This weekend they will introduce the product formally to the Washington DC area at the DC Hidayah conference, to be held August 7-8 at the Washington Convention Center. Hijjee plans on demonstrating the product.

With more than a dozen functions and icons printed on each page – including the volume controls for the pen – Hijjee assured the Muslim Link the product was very simple to use. “My son Hamza is 6-years old and he became the sheikh of the house. He loves the recording feature.” The product’s “memorization” icon allows you to select a verse, listen to it recited for you in the voice of your favorite reciter, and then the pen prompts you to read the verse aloud. The pen records your recitation, and then plays back the reciter’s reading and your reading back to back so you can check for mistakes. Hijjee cautioned that – though useful – the product cannot replace sitting with a qualified sheikh to learn how to recite Qur’an. The last juz in this special Qur’an has additional features, including the ‘iraab’ (grammar breakdown) of each ayah, hadith associated with each ayah, and other features. The USB port ensures users can get perpetual updates from the product website. Sheikh Mishary Rashid Al-Ifasy’s recording will be available soon, as well as the English audio for the popular Saheeh International translation Hijjee said.
