The Top Ten Things to do at Muslim Funfest 2012 Here are some tips on how to make your day at the region’s largest annual Muslim carnival a truly blessed and rewarding day for you and for your loved ones. Keep these things in mind and we will really enjoy and appreciate our beautiful way of life – Islam !

tually making dua for someone – “may peace be on you and the mercy of Allah as well” – what a beautiful greeting !

#3 Smile

Our beloved Prophet Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam was known the beautiful smile that rarely left his face. He told us: “Never disdain a good act even a small one, even if meeting a friend of yours with a smiling face” [Hadith in Muslim] So next time your caught with a frowning face, embrace the sunnah and smile, especially at the hardworking volunteers who are making this year’s Muslim Funfest happen! Recent medical studies actually show the physical act of smiling reduces your stress level, Allahu Akbar!

#1 Be Patient, Patient, Patient

Allah describes the people who are truly conscious of Him as those “who spend [in the cause of Allah ] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people” [AliImran:134]. So, if you have to stand in a long line at Muslim Funfest, instead of getting upset and complaining, take the time to remember Allah, thank Him, and begin listing all His favors upon you in your mind. You can be sure your turn will come and you won’t be finished counting Allah’s favors ! Be patient, because there is always someone facing more challenges than you.

#2 Spread the Salam

On the authority of Abu Hurayrah

(May Allah be pleased with him) it is related that the Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “I swear by the one in whose hand lies my soul that you will not enter paradise until you believe. And you shall not believe until you love one another. Shall I tell you something, that if you

practice it you will love another? Spread the (salam) Islamic greeting amongst yourselves.” [Hadith in Muslim]. So, don’t just salam to those you know. Say salam to the cashiers at the food tent, the vendors in the bazaar, and the volunteers manning the rides. Saying salam is ac-

Brotherhood In Practice The Best of Relationships Within society there are many different kinds of relationships and associations that are made between people. One of the highest forms of these relationships and a true milestone in terms of human interaction is that of brotherhood, a bond that ties the hearts of people together in a way that is governed by no worldly gain or desire. The concept of brotherhood holds an important place in the religion of Islam and many essential elements of Islam are fostered under the rubric of this concept. Brotherhood harvests the fruits of faith and love for the sake of Allah the All-Mighty Creator. It is a gift from Allah that is shared between believers and granted to whomever Allah chooses from His servants. Allah, The Almighty, says: {And hold fast, all of you together to the Rope of Allah and be not divided among yourselves and remember Allah’s favor on you, for you were enemies one to another, but He joined your hearts together so that by His Grace you became brethren.} (Qur’an 3:103)

that cannot be duplicated in worldly relationships. The concept of brotherhood in Islam can be defined as the act of loving in a person that which Allah loves in him. The Muslim loves Muhammad (peace be upon him), the Messenger of Allah, because Allah loves him and commanded his followers to love him. Allah, The Exalted, says: {Say, if you certainly love Allah, then follow me [Muhammad] and Allah will love you.} (Qur’an 3:31) Brotherhood is the fruit of good character, for good character is what brings about loving each other and friendliness and it is also a reason for entering paradise. The Messenger(Sallallahu ‘alyhi wa salaam) said in a hadeeth narrated by Tirmidhee: “What accounts the most for leading people into paradise is the taqwa of Allah and good character.”

Allah also says in the Qur’an: {And He has united their hearts. If you had spent all that is in the earth, you could not have united their hearts. But Allah has united them: Certainly, He is AllMighty, All-Wise.} (Qur’an 8:63)

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also discussed the importance of good character with Abu Hurairah. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “O Abu HuraYrah, maintain good character.” Abu Hurairah then asked the Prophet (peace be upon him): “And what is good character, O Messenger of Allah?” The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: “Connect with the people that shun you, forgive those that wrong you and give to those that deprive you.”

This brotherhood of Islam creates a loyalty and fondness between people

The perfect model of Islamic brotherhood can be constructed from the life, character, and words of the noble Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him):

help one another for My Sake.” (Musnad Imam Ahmad)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The believer is friendly and easy to befriend. And there is no good in the person who does not befriend and does not get befriended.” (Musnad Imam Ahmad)

The companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and those who followed them (the tabi’een) were instrumental in implementing the concept of brotherhood in everyday life. Their examples and advice remain sources of motivation to those who seek the fruits of brotherhood. Among their sayings are:

Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) also said in a Hadeeth Qudsi: “Allah, the Exalted, says ‘Indeed, My Love shall be bestowed upon the ones who visit each other for My Sake. Indeed, My Love shall be bestowed upon the ones who love one another for My Sake. Indeed, My Love shall be bestowed upon the ones who approach one another in humility for My Sake. Turning to Heaven, Thinking of Flight Early Muslims Envisioned Air Travel Just as futuristic was the work of an Andalusian musician, glassworker, thinker and inventor, Abbas Ibn Firnas. Although documentary proof of his work is not as extensive as many Arab-Muslim thinkers, multiple accounts have survived in credible second and third hand histories, enough to give him the title of father of modern glider aviation. Working in the Umayyad court in Cordoba in 852, he is said to have observed a gambler-daredevil named Armen Firman take bets and parachute off the top of the minaret of the Great Mosque in Cordoba. This rudimentary parachute flight, which Firman survived, inspired Ibn Firnas to redirect his work away from music and glassware to the mechanics of flight. He studied birds, falling seeds, leaves, feathers, and bats and devoted more than 20 years to building what seems to have been the first modern glider,

with wings sewn of silk, wood, and actual feathers. When in his 60s, he took a number of friends and observers to the Sierra Morena, a ridge outside Cordoba. Accounts say that he jumped off the hillside into the wind and remained airborne for 10 minutes, sailing over the fertile irrigated plain outside Cordoba. Only upon landing did he remember that he had omitted a critical part of his design, something not unlike a bird’s tail that allows it to control its descent. This important realisation came too late, because Ibn Firnas hit the ground fast and hard, breaking bones and leaving him in pain for the rest of his life, which lasted another 12 years. So he did survive to talk about his discovery, even if the outcome was less than perfect. Illustrations of his flying device are not unlike the design for a glider that >> Flight PG 13

Helicopters Use Dragonfly Engineering of the flying techniques of insects; indeed the technology humanity has is still very far away from being able to apply the flight abilities of these insects to the real world. Boeing and Airbus, companies that are among the leaders in aviation technology, as well as NASA and the US Air Force devote significant financial resources to research insect flight’ characteristics in order to advance the technology they use.

Attempting to Imitate insects’ piloting abilities It is not yet completely understood how flying insects adjust their flight altitudes and how they control their take offs and landings. Scientists aim to provide clues about how insects adjust the most appropriate distance from the ground during flight in their research. Researchers are currently studying the movement abilities of specially designed flying robots for this purpose. The French Scientific Research National Center is only one of the many centers involved in carrying out this study. Important Plane Companies Research Small Insects Flying insects have more advanced flying techniques than planes in many respects. They can tumble in the air, hover in one location for a long time and make sudden movements. They

All of these perfect characteristics flying insects possess has had an influence on many researchers. Even though scientific experience and techniques are very advanced today, even the most current technology is still limited in understanding the secret

Muslim Funfest Provides Free Wristbands to Over 600 Needy Children

By Funfest Times Staff (Clarksburg, MD - May 28, 2011) While planning for this year’s Muslim Funfest carnival, theorganizing team debated on pricing for rides, and especially for the unlimited rides wristband. If theprice was too high, the community wouldn’t come out, especially given the many parents out of workdue to the weak economy. If the price was too low, the annual carnival wouldn’t be able to pay for itself. They decided on $21, a price they felt was somewhere in the middle. But what about those children from single parent households where even

money for food and clothing is hard to come by? According to area zakat and social service committees at masajid in the region, there are hundreds of families who receive zakat assistance throughout the year, and many of these families have several young children. The Muslim Funfest wristbands would be out of reach for these families, and these families would be left out of the region’s only large scale annual Muslim carnival. But then Muslim Funfest organizers came up with an idea. For masajid that sponsor the Muslim Funfest, organizers would donate 25 wristbands to

be given exclusively to that masjid’s needy children. “It was a win-win-win situation, alhumdulillah. For the needy children, they get to take part in the fun along with the rest of the community ... [and] for the masajid, they get to service their families throughtheir zakat committees … [and] for Muslim Funfest, we ensure the carnival is open to everyone,” said Zafer Eroglu, one of the organizers of Muslim Funfest. Over 600 free wristbands were made available through the charitable partnership, alhumdulillah. The overwhelming majority of area

masajid sponsored Muslim Funfest. At least one masjid that did not sponsor the carnival received 25 wristbands anyway. “We really don’t want to leave anyone out because of money. This carnival is not about money, it’s about families coming together, being grateful to Allah, and having a good time in a clean, positive environment,” said Jameel Khan, another Muslim Funfest organizer. “It’s an honor for us to be in a position where we can bring a day of joy into a child’s life, and we thank Allah for putting us in that position,” he added.

Brotherhood >> continued from pg 7 adornment in times of ease and a great help in times of trouble.” (Sa`eed Ibn Musayyib) “O my son! Be the companion of he whom, should you serve him, he protects you; should you befriend him, he holds you is esteem; and should you fall into difficulty he helps you. Be the companion of he whom, should you extend your hand out in goodness, he extends his; should he witness one of your good deeds, he remembers it; and should he witness one of your bad deeds, he stops it. Be the companion of he whom, should you ask him, he gives you; should you become quiet, he takes the initiative; and should a calamity befall you, he comforts you. Be the companion of he whom, should you speak, he believes you and should you disagree with him on something, he desists in your favor.” (The advice of one of the tabi’een to his son.) The Conditions of Brotherhood The brotherhood described by the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and his followers has important conditions. First, the relationship must be established purely for the sake of Allah. This requires the brothers to abandon any type of personal interest that they might hope to gain through their relationship. The second condition is that the brotherhood must be paired with Iman and Taqwa. The Qur’an says about the Day of Judgment: “Friends on that day will be foes one to another except the righ-

www.MUSLIMFUNFEST.com

teous (ones who have Taqwa).” Third, the brotherhood should be of the Islamic manner and style. This is best exemplified by the hadeeth that gives an explanation of two men who loved each other for Allah’s sake. The hadeeth states that the two met for Allah’s sake and then parted for Allah’s sake. The cause of Allah was always paramount, it is what brought them together, defined their relationship, and ultimately led them to part. The fourth condition is that mutual advice for the sake of Allah should be an essential pillar of the brotherhood. If one finds something good in his brother, he should encourage and help him in that good thing. If he detects a shortcoming in his brother, he should advise his brother confidentially and exhort him to repent and return to a more correct behavior or attitude. Fifth, the brotherhood should be built on cooperation and meeting each others needs in both comfortable and difficult times. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “The example of the believers’ love, affection, and mercy for one another is like that of the body: when one of its organs ails, the rest of the body responds and watches over it by contracting fever.” (Bukhari and Muslim) The Rights of Brotherhood Brotherhood is a responsibility; each brother has a right on the other. Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Keep away from suspicion, for it is the most deceptive discourse. Do not attempt to probe, spy on, compete

with, envy, or be hateful of one another, but be, O servants of Allah, brothers. The Muslim is the brother of his fellow Muslim: he does not oppress him, fail him, or scorn him. Taqwa is here [points to his heart]. It is wrong for a man to hold his Muslim brother in contempt. Everything pertaining to a Muslim is forbidden to another: his blood, his honor, and his wealth.” (Muslim) The Rights of Brotherhood In Practice The contract of brotherhood is a relationship that entails duties and responsibilities that must be fulfilled. The brother of a Muslim is entitled to some rights in his wealth, self, speech, and heart. 1) Brothers need to become aware of the financial situation of their brothers. 2) Every brother should allocate a monthly amount of money for helping their brothers in need. 3) The brothers should devise collective business ventures, regulated by the Shari’ah, to improve each others financial situation. 4) Smiling and shaking his hand when you see him, and making dua for him in his absence. It also entails dealing gently with him; giving him the benefit of the doubt; loving him as you love yourself and your family; trusting him in all your matters; shunning ill thoughts of him; keeping your promises to him and guarding his secrets; and visiting him if he should become ill. 5) Set up a dinner or iftar for your

brothers and their families to help establish good relationships. Set up a periodical visitation schedule among your close brothers. These visits should be kept informal and devoid of extravagance. A brother always brings joy to his brother’s heart, keeps the conversation between them informal, defends him from harm, races to benefit him, and never rejoices over his misfortunes. To fulfill your brother’s rights over yourself, you should never remind him of your generosity should you happen to help him or give him something. Give him sincere advice, inquire about his children, protect his honor and his wealth, and do not covet him. Al-Hassan Al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “Our brothers are more beloved to us than our family and children because our family reminds us of this life, but our brothers remind us of the hereafter.” A hadith of the Prophet (peace be upon him) says: “Whoever relieves a believer from a distress of this life, Allah will relieve him from a distress on the Day of Judgment. Whosoever brings ease to a believer who is in difficulty, Allah will bring ease to him in both this life and the next. Whosoever conceals the shortcomings of a Muslim, Allah will conceal his shortcomings in this world and the next. Allah will always help a servant as long as that servant helps his brother.” -------------------------------------------Source: Adapted from Young Muslims of the Islamic Circle of North America website ymsite.com.

dith] So, on this day of relaxation, be relaxed ! No scowling, no snapping, no raising your voice in anger, no complaining, no getting annoyed. Just chill. Smile. Be stress free, and make those around you stress free.

Muslim FunFest >> continued from pg 6 is no salat for him unless he has a valid excuse.” [Authentic Hadeeth] Praying in congregation will also get your 27 more times the reward according to the Prophet Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam, so be happy and hopeful of Allah’s reward. When that athaan is called over the loud speaker, make your way to the center of the carnival and let’s reconnect with Allah together. What a beautiful lesson in unity !

#9 Make A Blessed Transaction at the Bazaar

#5 Give Special Treatment to Children and Elders

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “He is not of us who does not have mercy on young children, nor honor the elderly” (Hadith in AlTirmidhi). So, if you see an elder standing in line behind you waiting to order food, give them your spot for the sake of Allah. If you see a child who needs tickets for a ride or who eyes some cotton candy but doesn’t have the money, fulfill their desire … today is a day to show your love! Don’t you want the Most Merciful to show mercy to you?

#6 Shop and Get 1,000,000 Good Deeds

There are so many ways to earn blessings from Allah, we just need to know about them and then do them. One of the blessing jackpots comes your way each time you go to a marketplace, some place where buying and selling is going on … some place like the Muslim Funfest Bazaar ! In an authentic hadith, the Prophet Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam said whoever recites the following when entering the marketplace will get 1,000,000

blessings ! Say this every time you go through the Funfest bazaar and you will memorize it Insha’Allah and be on your way to becoming a millionaire! laa ‘ilaaha ‘illa-llaahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu lahu-lmulku wa lahu-l-hamdu yuhyee wa yumeetu wa huwa hayyun laa yamootu biyadihi-l-khairu wa huwa ‘ala kulli shai ‘in qadeer. [There is none worthy of worship except Allah, alone, without any partner with Him. For Him is the Dominion and to Him is the praise. He gives life and He brings about death; He is living and does not die. In His hand is all good and He has power over all thiangs]

#7 Look at the Dunya from Way Up High

Often as we go about our lives in the material world, we lose perspective of its low value. Things that are too close (like the dunya) sometimes make it hard to

focus on what is important. At Funfest, take a trip on the Hot Air Balloon or the Helicopter and look at life from a higher elevation. Take it all in and remember the words of Allah that He doesn’t need us, rather we are the ones who need Him. Allah says: “The creation of the heavens and earth is greater than the creation of mankind, but most of the people do not know.” [Surah Ghafi:57] The more we look at the vastness of Allah’s creation, the more humble we will become.

#8 Resolve to Be Super Kind Today !

‘A’isha reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Allah is kind and loves kindness in every matter.” [Agreed upon hadith] Also, Anas reported that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “Make things easy for people and do not make them difficult. Give good news to people and do not frighten them away.” [Agreed upon ha-

Hakim Ibn Hizam (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that: Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wassallam) said: “Both parties in a business transaction have a right to annul it so long as they have not separated; and if they tell the truth and make everything clear to each other (i.e., the seller and the buyer speak the truth, the seller with regard to what is purchased, and the buyer with regard to the money) they will be blessed in their transaction, but if they conceal anything and lie, the blessing on their transaction will be eliminated.’’ [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] Make sure our Funfest Bazaar is full of blessings and nothing more !

#10 Lend A Hand to Clean-Up

Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet Salallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam said: “Sadaqa is due on every joint of a person, every day the sun rises. Administering of justice between two men is also a Sadaqa. And assisting a man to ride upon his beast, or helping him load his luggage upon it, is a Sadaqa; and a good word is a Sadaqa; and every step that you take towards prayer is a Sadaqa, and removing of harmful things from the pathway is a Sadaqa.” [Hadith in Muslim] So, the next time you see some trash on the ground you look at it as a free investment that Allah put in your path. Dragonfly >> continued from pg 8 point-of-view). This image flow is known as “optical flow.” The driver who steps on the brakes stops his car according to this principle. Long distance jumpers also determine their take off according to this principle. This adjustment, made by conscious human beings using their minds, is also made by flying insects and birds. Flies and gannets make such an adjustment when they land on objects or dive under water, respectively speaking. They decrease their speed as they get closer to the landing spot. The ratio between the size of the image of the landing point on the retina and the size of the object increases as the flying creature gets closer to the landing point. When this ratio exceeds a certain value, the creature stops by “stepping on the brakes”. Hence, all flying insects and birds use the principle of “optical flow” during their take offs and landings. With this important information, it is understood how insects adjust their relative positions depending on the location, but it is still not known how this information is interpreted by the insect and how it prevents it from crashing during flight. Researchers think that insects have a “repeating” image system that provides image information about the past as a result of the latest research they have conducted. They named this system as “optical flow modifier.” Insects determine the ratio of height to ground speed by controlling their vertical elevation with this system. In

www.MUSLIMFUNFEST.com

order to test this system, researchers designed a micro helicopter that has the appearance of a fly. The control parts of this helicopter are based on the idea of an optical flow modifier. It has been observed that the robot is actually able to fly like a housefly in an impressive way. The robot was also very successful in take off, straight flight and landing. The new findings serve to enlighten many points that were not previously explainable before about insects’ flight. With this research, it was also understood that insects descend with the wind blowing from the front, and rise with the wind blowing from the back. (Bio-inspired Flying Robot Sheds Light On Insect Piloting Abilities) Important Questions To Be Asked This research was conducted by Nicolas Franceschini, Franck Ruffier and Julien Serres from the French Scientific Research National Center together with the Marseille Mediterranean University. In addition, this research is being supported by the European Union. There are some important questions that need to be asked here: How can it be explained that insects with no intelligence and consciousness fly and land according to the optical flow principle?

Who makes the adjustments to this memory process, which scientists name as “optical flow modifier”? How do a handful of cells, which are called the brain of insects, manage to behave according to the so-called principles of physics? Evolutionist scientists are not able to give satisfactory answers to any of these questions. The only answer to these questions is that Almighty Allah is the One Who creates every being on the ground and in the sky, and determines their characteristics. Dr. Russell Brinkworth from the Biomimicry Image Laboratory in the University of Adelaide comments about the sight abilities of insects, which are clear evidences of Allah’s existence, as follows: “When it comes to sight, even a small insect brain is superior to all of the artificial sight systems of today.”(Atlas August, edition 173) English biologist J. Robin Wootton summarizes the superior features in the fly, which is one of the insects scientists like to examine the most, and the evolutionists’ dilemma about this, as follows:

Who teaches this principle to living things?

“There is no other technological structure that can compete with fly wings.” (Robert G. Cook, Avian Visual Cognition, Department of Psychology Tufts University, Comparative Cognition Press, September 2001)

How is it possible that insects can remember images of the past?

Scientists who were educated at the most reputable universities of the

world and the European Union officials who support these research projects put a great effort into understanding the flight dynamics of insects. When the situation is like this, it is an offense to logic to claim that insects have come into existence by a series of coincidences. There is only one clear truth and that is; the flight techniques of insects that people try to understand by using advanced technologies are one of the clear evidences of creation. Miracles Seen in Insects Every characteristic that insects possess is a miracle. Some insects being able to flap their wings 600 times per minute, flying by using aerodynamic principles, possessing a natural gear box that provides a gradual speed in the air, being able to speed up and slow down suddenly, and being able to make sharp maneuvers are some examples of these miracles. The expertise of insects mentioned in this article during take off and landing is a link in this chain of miracles. Allah shows people who can ponder upon the uniqueness of His infinite intelligence and knowledge. “Mankind! An example has been made, so listen to it carefully. Those whom you call upon besides Allah are not even able to create a single fly, even if they were to join together to do it. And if a fly steals something from them, they cannot get it back. How feeble are both the seeker and the sought!” (Surat al-Hajj, 73) Source: harunyahya.com

Flight >> continued from pg 8 Leonardo Da Vinci drew nearly 700 years later. Ironically, Da Vinci is given credit for being the first modern thinker to seriously address the means of flight. Whether Da Vinci saw drawings or read about the flight of Abbas Ibn Firnas will never be known. But even if not, it demonstrated that two great minds would independently solve in a similar way one of the greatest engineering puzzles of history... how to transfer the skills of flying birds and insects to mankind. The birth of rocketry and gunpowder seems to have come in China in the 9th century or before, largely for fireworks for use during religious festivals. But this seemingly innocuous discovery took on a new life when the Mongols began to employ rockets as weapons of war. Not only could gunpowder-fuelled rockets project a military force miles beyond its front lines, they introduced a new degree of fear and uncertainty to the already traumatic process of battle. When they were equipped with an explosive charge, and they were accurate, rockets could do physical damage to the enemy. Mongol rockets in the 13th century rained down on Hungary in Europe as well as Russia, Persia, Iraq, and Syria

Muslim Fun Fest ‘12 | 13

as the Mongol Golden Horde swept across Eurasia. While their actual military impact is debatable, this dramatic new weapon certainly caught the attention of inventors, including those in the Arab-Muslim world. The fall of Baghdad to the Mongols in 1258 was one of the most traumatic events in Arab-Muslim history, bringing an end to the Baghdad caliphate, as well as utterly destroying this fabled city that for 500 years had been one of the shining centres of Arab-Muslim power, thought, and culture. As many as 800,000 Baghdadis are believed to have been slaughtered outright, and the city’s physical face was obliterated. The destruction was so total that many Arabs and other Muslims began to think that this terrible event was an act of God, a divine punishment sent to avenge the supposed sins and mistakes of the Arabs. But amidst all this destruction, there were tiny seeds of the future. Arab writers who survived to write about the destruction were fascinated by the Mongols and how they waged war. They even managed to build their own rockets, which the Arab armies used in the 7th Crusade against King Louis IX in 1268. One Arab inventor, Hasan Al Rammah, working in Syria about a decade after the Mongol destruction of

Baghdad, wrote a treatise on gunpowder and rockets called The Book of Military Horsemanship and Ingenious War Devices. This book included more than 100 recipes for gunpowder, including 22 that could be used as rocket fuel. Experts say that one of Al Rammah’s recipes is uncannily close to the modern ideal mix for gunpowder. Al Rammah also designed an early torpedo, probably the first ever done. Al Rammah’s work almost certainly made its way to Europe, where it would help equip the future armies of imperial conquest. For better or worse, modern jet propulsion, rocketry, artillery, and other weaponry in part owe their development to the work of this little-known Arab engineer. More peaceful innovations of ArabMuslim engineers included modern clear glass like that developed by aviator Abbas Ibn Firnas and chemist Jabir; the kerosene lamp invented by Al Razi in the 9th century; the modern oil well which was introduced in the 11th century around Baku, Azerbaijan; streetlights in mediaeval Cordoba; asphalt paved roads in mediaeval Baghdad; various tools of water supply (including the irrigation canals called acequias brought to Al Andalus by the Umayyads and then to the Americas by the Catholic kings of Spain); assorted methods of

steel-making in Damascus and Toledo; and windmills. Inventor Al Jazari invented the crankshaft and camshaft in 13th century Anatolia and these essential discoveries would one day help power the Industrial Revolution in Europe and elsewhere. Al Jazari is also credited with inventing the modern pump. The Banu Musa brothers working in the 8th and 9th century Baghdad of caliphs Harun Al Rashid and Al Mamun are credited with discovering the on-off switch, the float chamber, the modern valve, and the gas mask. They are also documented as having developed the earliest modern robotic devices in the 9th century, including robotic birds in the caliph’s gardens that could sing and flap their wings. Arab-Muslim analogue computers included the famous astrolabe, and the equatorium invented by an Andalusian Al Zarqali in the 11th century, designed to compute the longitudes and positions of the sun, moon, and planets. The first sextant, created in 994 by Al Khujandi in Persia, was a more advanced way of geolocation that would in the 17th century supplant the astrolabe and become the key element of navigation until the development of GPS in the late 20th century. Imam Learning Center, Ltd. was incorporated in 1995 by parents like you who felt there was a growing demand for quality child care centers. IMAN, pronounced “e-man,” means faith in Arabic and, teacher in Hebrew. This is a fitting name for the Center because the founders put all their faith in the planning andbuilding of their dream ~ a structured learning environment with a “home feel.” The directors of IMAN have a long history of community involvement in the Montgomery County Public School System. Through the ESOL Program and the PTA, our Executive Director, Mimi Hassanein, was recognized for her outstanding service to the children of Montgomery Country by the Commission on Children and Youth (2002). The Center’s Director, Hwaida Hassanein, has a degree in Business with certificate in Early Childhood Education.
