Community News Finding What's Missing At An Orphanage In Mexico By Omama Altalib

As I just turned 20, I have been pondering on this particular point. I am only getting older as the years pass by which is why it is important I take advantage of the time, enthusiasm, energy, drive and passion I have now.

In this society, we have grown attachments to things rather than people. When bored on a metro ride, who do we turn to, Siri or the person sitting right next to us? It seems like we have developed a relationship with gadgets and gizmos and have neglected our relationships with other human beings.

Helping Hand Achieves Top Charity Ranking By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter With the help of Imam Johari Abdul Malik of Dar al Hijrah, Helping Hand for Relief and Development USA (HHRD) raised money to support fifty orphans at a fundraiser in Abshaar Restaurant in Springfield, VA. Held on August 16, 2013 and hosted by the local HHRD office, young interns from the Student Internship Program (SIP) in Vienna, VA led the effort to raise funds for the HHRD Orphan Support Program. After activist Haytham Younis recited from the Holy Quran, guest speaker Joshua Salaam, Youth Director at ADAMS Center, urged the au-

3Di Athletics Holds First Weekend Basketball Camp By Contributing Writers The Gary Arthur Community Center in Cooksville, MD was filled with enthusiastic campers as 3Di Athletics held its first ever basketball camp on the weekend of August 24-25, 2013. Campers from all over Maryland and Virginia came out to the camp including 12-year-old Omar Ali, from Howard County. “The best weekend ever! It was also the best camp I ever went to!” relayed Omar Ali. Ali and 24 other young athletes aging from age 10 to 17 were at the gym participating in a weekend long basketball camp, hosted by 3Di Athletics. A new organization founded in Maryland, 3Di is based upon three principles under one umbrella: Deen, Determination, Discipline and Identity, which explains its name. This initiative intends to hold professional basketball camps and tournaments for young Muslims and children of other faiths who strive to become better basketball players, and most importantly better people on and off the court. The cost for the camp was $95 to $175 per camper. “As a father of young Muslim basketball players, I had been looking and waiting for the opportunity for my sons to participate in a basketball camp where they could tighten their skills on the court and be in an environment conducive to their Islam. This 3Di camp provided that and more...” said Jeyone Muhammad, father of four camp participants. “The experienced trainers provided equal, if not better training than that of other well-known camps my sons have attended,” he said. Not only did the trainers help the young athletes develop and refine their basketball skills, but they also made it a priority to instill character and confidence for the campers on and off the court. “The camp taught me to how to be a leader and how I can use Islam to help me in basketball.” said 7th grader Hassan Malik from Mt. View Middle School. “My favorite part was the 5 vs. 5 games. It brought out the competitive side of the kids, and the shy or quiet players became natural leaders. People we didn't think could shoot started making three [pointers], kids playing extremely hard on defense,” Coach Raouf Osman, former Montgomery College basketball player and track champion, described his favorite part of the camp, ”they took initiative to learn each other's names and made it a competitive atmosphere… I loved it and I am ready to do it again!” Saturday’s part of the camp consisted of intense conditioning, team drills, ball handling, and stations. The stations comprised of different equipment that focused on specific skills, such as agility, defense, rebounding, passing, shooting and more. “The camp taught me the basics of the game of basketball. I learned what I needed know to work on and how I can develop as a basketball player,” said 10th grader Hamzah Ansari from Springbrook High School. “We’re trying to make 3Di a movement,” said Abbasi, who has mentored middle and high schoolers for the past 6 years in the local community. He is currently in the process of getting his coaching and training certifications. “We want to use basketball as platform for these young athletes. Today’s Muslim kids are going through difficulties and troubles and we want to use Basketball and Islam as a way to better themselves and keep their mind off other distractions that may get them into trouble. Our coaches aren’t only trainers, but also mentors. We selectively chose our trainers because we want people who are role models for these kids.”

Maulana Yusuf Islahi: Be Optimistic About Our Ummah On Saturday September 7, 2013 the Muslim Link interviewed Indian scholar Maulana Yusuf Islahi after his lecture at the Islamic Center of Maryland, over a cup of very sweet tea. A prominent writer and orator, he is one of the leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, the Markazi Majlis e Shura (Central Advisory Council). He is also the chief patron of Project WhyIslam of Islamic Circle of North America and founder of a women’s orphanage, “Jamea tus Salihaat” in Rampur, India. Maulana Islahi was on his annual tour of the United States. Here is his message of optimism and hope for the Muslims in America. TML: What are your views on the Islam in America and where it is headed? The connection to Islam is spreading very quickly in the United States, as well as the rest of the world. Maryland Muslim to Receive Governor’s Service Award A resident of Potomac, Tufail Ahmed of the Islamic Center of Maryland community and co-founder of Montgomery County Muslim Council (MCMC), has been selected to receive the Governor's Service Award. Over 150 nominations were received by the Governor's office for this years’ service awards. These awards recognize Maryland citizens for their significant volunteer contributions to the life and health of the State and its people during a particular period of time. Recipients of the Governor's Service Awards are required to exemplify the following characteristics: Demonstrate sustained volunteer commitment to meeting Maryland's most pressing human and/or environmental community needs; Engage in meaningful volunteer service that makes a measurable difference in the community; Repre-

curiosity of the people, with the grace of Allah. There are a lot of instances of this. My observation has been that the people of this land are of virtuous dispositions and seekers of goodness.

Note that I didn’t say that Muslims are not doing the work in Allah’s way, but the results are not based on their work but are the blessings of Allah subhanawa ta ‘ala. In the past 60 years the best thing Muslims have done is make conscientious efforts to keep their progeny connected with the religion. They have made this effort for their eternal lives and for the betterment of the country they call home. These efforts are there but more effort is needed. The people of this land, because they are essentially good people, are willing to give the freedom to Muslims to work for the benefit of this land and are happy with the results. Muslims should make use of these freedoms. TML: What advice would you give to the Muslim living in the USA especially on how to aid the invitation to Islam?

Mahdi Bray To Head National Muslim Civics Organization By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter American Muslim Alliance (AMA) announced the appointment of Imam Mahdi Bray as the New AMA National Director for Development, Organization, and Outreach and AMA DC Director. Founded in 1994, AMA is a national civic education organization with 101 chapters in 31 cities. The AMA’s activities include: political education and leadership training; research and analysis on candidates, campaigns, and issues; developing political strategies and articulating policy positions; issuance of election advisories; voter registration, education and mobilization; and organized participation (including hospitality suites) at the national and state conventions of the major political parties.

Imam Bray is a long time civil and human rights activist and formerly served as the executive director of the Muslim American Society's MAS Freedom (MASF) based in Washington, DC. Imam Bray also serves on the Board of Directors of the Interfaith Alliance, America's largest interfaith organization, the National Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, and is a National Co-convener of Religions for Peace- USA. In addition, Imam Bray has been a television and radio talk show host for many years and served as president of the Coordinating Council of Muslim Organizations (CCMO). Imam Bray has led peace

missions in Bosnia, East Africa and Darfur. He has served as a liaison between the President's White House Faith-Based Initiative Program on behalf of the Muslim Community. Imam Bray is also the author of The Mosque Voter's Guide and The Political Guide for Mosque Activists. Kamran Hakimi’s family migrated from Uzbekistan in the early 70s. Not an inventor or an engineer, Hakimi developed the product based on his own spiritual needs. “I do like to come up with different innovations, but this product was out of personal sincerity,” he says. Everyday the cardboard box he carefully cut out to pray on would be thrown away by the cleaners at his place of work. He describes his frustration with the missing cardboard boxes that he would use

ISB Resident Scholar Yaseen Sheikh Beyond their speeches and activism, local Muslim leaders are community members just like the rest of us. The Muslim Link interviews our local leaders so the community can get to know them and In Shaa Allah help them serve the community. This issue we focus on Islamic Society of Baltimore's latest addition â&#x20AC;&#x201C; resident scholar Shaykh Yaseen Sheikh. â&#x20AC;&#x201C; TML TML: Please tell us about your family. Are you married, children, how old, how many? Tell us about your parents, upbringing, siblings, achievements etc. How has your family adjusted to the change and how do they like the East Coast? YS: My family originates from Surat, Gujarat, in India. My parents are first generation immigrants who migrated to London, England in the late 1960's. My parents are noble, hardworking, committed and devoted parents that played an instrumental role in shaping my direction in life. I am one of five children, 4th in line amongst four boys and one girl. I had a fairly conservative upbringing, in a fairly conservative Muslim Community in Stamford Hill, North London, which is also home to the largest Orthodox Jewish Community outside of Israel. The importance of praying five times a day, love for and obedience to Allah, adherence to Sunnah was instilled in us from a fairly young age. My father was very conscious of taking us to pray at the Masjid. Thus, I used to offer even

TML: What did you want to be when you grew up? When and how did you make the decision to become an imam, religious director, teacher?

In England, it is a tradition for all children to attend Maktab (evening school) at their local Masjid, learning how to read Quran, and more than just the basics of Islam. It is here that I developed a profound love for Quranic recitation and would often learn more than the portion assigned by my teacher. At the age of eleven, to further quench my thirst for Quran, I enrolled at a seminary, Jameah Islamiya, Kent and completed Hifdh within 1.5 years. I was the first Hafidh produced by the institution, may Allah accept. After this, I developed a zeal to understand the Quran, and to further increase my knowledge and understanding of the noble book, I enrolled in the Alim Program in Darul Uloom London, UK. Darse Nizami program, studying various Islamic Sciences such as Arabic and it's related subjects, Fiqh and its principles, Hadeeth and its principles, Tafseer and its principles, and Aqidah. I had the pleasure of studying under some of the greatest scholars of the UK, most notably, Mufti Umar Farooq of London, whom I am indebted to for his specific attention and love. Upon graduating, I enrolled at Birkbeck College, University of London, and completed an MA in Islamic Studies. I have been serving as an Imam ever since graduating from Darul Uloom at the tender age of 20. I made a huge stride by migrating across the Atlantic, to the USA in 2006, and was very privileged to the join one of the best communities in USA, in Plano, Texas. I served the community of IACC for seven years before deciding [that] I wanted to change my career path and take on a new challenge. I joined ISB, with its Al-Rahmah [School and Qur'an Academy], an educational institute that has a growing reputation in providing outstanding educational services at various levels in June of this year to develop an Alim Program. I am blessed to have been married for ten years, and am blessed with three beautiful daughters. My family is adjusting well to the East Coast with the blessing of Allah.

YS: In all honesty, as a young child, I always spoke of being a surgeon when I grew up. Not that I had any idea of what that career entailed, but maybe I just liked the word. It was not until I was fully engaged in my pursuit of sacred knowledge that I realized that Allah has a plan for me, and that I am just simply going with the plan he has in store for me. I am humbled that Allah selected me for such an immense and esteemed position, and I pray daily that he assists me in fulfilling the rights of such a role. TML: Why are you an imam? YS: The Prophet Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam was Imam of his people, and in his position helped and touched the lives of thousands. I wanted to emulate the path of the Prophet in being able to help people connect to Allah, understand their purpose and direction in life, try to guide them through the various struggles and challenges life presents whilst keeping firm focus on the ultimate goal of life. This is what motivates me daily. TML: Aside from the Quran, what are you currently reading? YS: Taareekh Dawat wa Azeemat by Shaikh Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi. TML: What are you passionate about? When you are not teaching how do you keep busy? YS: I am passionate about various things. Civic engagement, interfaith, social justice are some of them. My biggest passion, however, is soccer, and more specifically, English premier league soccer. I simply can't get enough. Despite being in USA for over seven years, I still haven't caught on to the American Football hype, and have never watched one entire game of American Football. Maybe it is my Brit-

This year the Convention Program Committee led by Sohaib Sultan, Chaplain at Princeton University, designed the main and parallel sessions on five major tracks, keeping in mind the theme of the convention and the critical needs of the American Muslim community. These sessions are identified with icons on the program schedule. New sessions featured included ones on embracing differently-abled Muslims, making of a dynamic seniors program, women’ spaces in masajid and social media activism . Most of the sessions were staffed with sign language interpreters. Local speakers who moderated or presented at sessions included Imam Shaker El Sayed, Imam Zia Makhdoom, Imam Johari Abdul Malik, Rabia Chaudhry, Afeefa Syeed, Mona Ngem, Asma Hanif, Marci Moberg, Naeem Baig, and Corey Saylor amongst others. Iqbal Unus, Secretary General of ISNA welcomed the audience. “Organizations do not grow to be 50 years without the hard work of a number of people,” said Unus. Imam Talib Shareef of Masjid Muhammad spoke on Friday’s inaugural session, followed by the Mayor of Washington, DC, Vincent Gray. He urged the attendees to stand with the district in its quest for representation. The mayor issued a proclamation and announced August 30 as ISNA Day in Washington, DC. Imam Mohamed Magid, President of ISNA, and Rizwan Jaka, Steering Committee Chair also presented at the inaugural session.

A group of scouts presented the I have Dream speech on Friday’s main session. Chaplain Tahera Ahmed made waves as the first woman to recite Quran at the ISNA convention, with vehement support and the sharp condemnation. President Obama sent a message which was appreciated by some and drowned out by anti-drone speeches made by leading scholars. A celebration of milestones and achievements and an opportunity to reflect on the next 50 year for the largest Muslim organization in the United States. In 1962, the MSA at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign was very active, presided by Mehdi Bahadori, now Professor (emeritus) of Mechanical Engineering, at Sharif University of Technology, in Iran. In a written message, he reminisced about the start of the mother organization in April 1963 with the support of Dr. Ahmed Sakr, who became the first Secretary of the MSA of USA and Canada and Bahadori the first President. In 1965, Ahmed Totonji became the second President. They went from campus to campus organizing the MSA chapters under one umbrella. The pioneers decided early on not to take any money from overseas. The first MSA headquarters was open in Gary, Indiana in 1969. When all the original founders had graduated and moved on from college into communities, they realized the need for a community-based organization and in 1982,

ISNA was formed. MSA gave birth to ISNA and Plainfield, Indiana was chosen as it was a day’s drive from either coast. Some of the early challenges that MSA/ ISNA faced were Bilalians, an iteration of Nation of Islam. MSA led delegations to work with the Bilalian community. We also had to deal with the movie called the Message. Many people wanted MSA to come out and condemn the movie, but we didn’t and it turned out to be a good decision,” said Yaqub. This movie is now a part of most Muslims’ personal collection. The first MSA-ISNA conventions started from very humble beginnings and were attended by a few families. “Everyone slept in cabins and dorms,” shared the wife of the first President of ISNA, Ilyas Ba Yunus. The ISNA Matrimonial Service emerged out of his research on divorce in the Muslims in North America. From 1997 to 2001, ISNA saw a big transition as a larger number of people started coming to the convention (approx. 3,000. This year’s attendance was 40,000 Muslim and interfaith guests. “When will you have vision? What is your vision as Muslims in America?” thundered Imam Siraj Wahaj to the hall packed for the MSA National session titled- Why Are You Just Standing There. During the Community Service Recognition Luncheon, (CSRL) Ilham Talib, wife of Hisham Talib, received the 2013 CSRL award for her life long contributions. The owner of Halalco in Falls Church, VA, Mohammad Abdul Mateen Chida, a pioneer of MSA since 1964 received an award. He is a pioneer of ITALICS halal trade in this area and operated MSA’s first press in Maryland called International Graphics. As he was infirm, his wife Maimoona Chida received the award on his behalf. Some highlights included the 50th Anniversary History Exhibit included a children’s program, Qiraat Competition, an eclectic Photography Exhibit, the Islamic Film Festival featuring 15 movies, the first ever ISNA-MAFIQ debates and a Basketball Tournament. Local Debate Competition Gets National Stage Time at ISNA By Muslim Link Staff

After the success of the Muslim Youth Debate Tournament (MYDT), Mafiq Foundation hosted the first annual ISNA-MAFIQ Muslim Debate Tournament at the 50th ISNA convention in Washington, D.C. A national parliamentary debate competition, the tournament featured high school and middle school categories, where teams of three engaged each other on important issues of national and spiritual importance. Debaters were selected from around the nation with teams and topics announced on August 18, 2013.

The winning high school team consisted of Mona Hagmajid, Adeeb Abdullah and Faraz Ahsun in the opposition. They presented a cohesive and passionate debate.Tahmeed Hossain, Jamal Dumas and Razeen Khan debated for the proposition and put up a good fight.

The winning Middle School team was in opposition, and consisted of Ilsa Mir, Nuha Mahboob, and Taharat Sheikh. The Middle School proposition finalists were Safa Piracha, Huma Chaudhry and Ahmed Rabbani. Imam Magid handed out the prizes to the finalists. Many ISNA participants including school principals and youth leaders pledged to send teams for the next year’s debate, which will be held in Detroit, MI.

Islamic Heritage Foundation Completes Quranic Memorization Competition By Nabiha Parker Muslim Link Contributing Writer On Saturday, August 24th, beautiful recitations of Quran echoed through the air at the Foundation for Islamic Education in Villanova, Pennsylvania. Students were displaying their expertise in the Islamic Heritage Foundation’s (IHF) first annual Hafith contest. For the past 19 years, IHF has held Quranic memorization competitions for young people ages 7 to 25 in half, one, two, and three juz categories. Hundreds of students have participated over the years. This year, the board of IHF decided to up the stakes, by sponsoring a contest just for those who have memorized the entire Quran. Information about the contest was sent out to masjids in Philadelphia and surrounding states, and the Washington and Montgomery County / Prince Georges County areas. The contest was held near Philadelphia as a part of Quran Family

Fun Day, which included food, a moon bounce, Quranic jeopardy and scavenger hunt, and other family activities. After lunch and Zhur prayer, contestants were called to the microphone one by one to complete 10 excerpts from the Quran as directed by judges Dr. Akhnuwkh Jones, Sheikh Mohamed Shehata, and Dr. Salman Yusuff. The crowd waited anxiously for the decisions at the completion of the recitations. Dr. Jones congratulated all contestants for their exemplary work, and commented, “This was not an easy decision. All of the participants did an excellent job, and the scores were very close.” Everyone was excited for the winners as they were announced:

these days. Many immigrant parents tend to disregard the fact that their children are raised in the West, and will, ultimately have some elements of their personality influenced by the West. The evolving identity of Muslims in this country contributes to the marriage crisis. “My parents seem to have the idea--similar to some other Muslims in Western countries--that a spouse from their country would be better. Better for whom? Better for me or better for them? Is this preference due to the fact that they feel culture, ethnicity, and religion would be better preserved this way?” questions a single Muslimah. Increased physical mobility is a hurdle too. Tolo Owondunni is an eligible, eloquent Nigerian man with ties in Maryland. He doesn’t have a wide Muslim social circle or family in NYC, where he lives, to help him find a match. "You can't just walk up to a woman and ask if you want to get married. I have walked up to someone before and was asked ‘why are you talking to me?’," he says. He wants to find someone like him and doesn’t have much time to go on websites. He is open to being introduced to any race or ethnicity and is currently using the Islamic Center at NYU as a resource. The delaying of the American adolescence experience or the new emerging adulthood stage has also contributed to the delay in marriage, especially, with the high school experience extended by local community colleges. According to the New York Times, in 1960, 77 percent of women and 65 percent of men had, by the time they reached 30, passed all five [what sociologists term as] milestones of adulthood: completing school, leaving home, becoming financially independent, marrying and having a child. Among 30-year-olds in 2000, according to data from the United States Census Bureau, fewer than half of the women and one-third of the men

In cultures where arranged marriages are prevalent, men and women complain about the interference of the parents; in cultures where it isn't, practicing Muslim men and women are finding it extremely hard to meet someone on their own. A sister from the Somali community in Fairfax, VA, where there are a substantial number of unmarried women in the late thirties, vents her frustration. “The issue in [my] community is the expectation of the girl to find a man for herself: unfortunately, in our culture, "arranged" marriages are practiced by few and it is widely expected for the woman to take it upon her shoulders to bring the guy

to her parents when she is ready to be married...only few, perhaps a handful of families do arranged marriages....I am a devout Muslimah and my religion tells me to never ever [sic] date a guy, but again, my community and the "social norms" are completely against that...I, along with many Somali females are now in their 30's and single...The older generation needs to change this disgusting norm,” she says. There is an extraordinary number of very educated women in their thirties and above who have not found a spouse. As intelligent, educated, single women venture to find men to set the cornerstone for a family, they can not find suitable matches. Women in their late 20s and early 30s, urged to be educated all their lives, settle into their careers or studies, suddenly become less desirable mates to some men. Another phenomenon faced by several ethnic communities is that many educated men marry outside of their community, race and religion. Local Egyptian Americans Who Witnessed Protest Massacres Recount Horrors, Protest Coup By Hena Zuberi Muslim Link Staff Reporter Life in the protest tents, a mini-city with tens of thousands of protesters “was the best time of my life. It felt like Hajj. People sharing food. Optimistic. They would make space for women out of respect,” he says. “I am not a religious person, and there were lots of people on the stage at Rabaa who were not from the Muslim Brotherhood, from all over the country, the world, standing up for democracy and the weak.” Mohammad Ismail Ahmed was in a taxi trying to return home to the U.S. but stayed at the insistence of friends and witnessed violent massacres. The 37 year-old jeweler from Georgia had flown to Egypt to warn his social circle. “Don’t be used; the military is using you to get rid of democracy.” Never an activist or a politician, he is now part of the broad coalition called Egyptian Abroad for Democracy (EAFD). He has

family in the Egyptian military and his brother is a member of the elite Supreme Council Of Armed Forces (SCAF). It would have been easier and more lucrative for him to be pro-coup, but he went on the unsafe street for months, to Rabaa al-Adawiya Square where more than 500 protesters were killed. “I learnt it from the US, I appreciate democracy and freedom. I was so proud to be an Egyptian after the revolution,” shares Ismail. Several families from overseas have lost loved ones in the protests. Asmaa Hussein and Amr Kassem were a young Canadian couple visiting family in Egypt. Kassem, 26, went to Jumuah prayers and a funeral in Alexandria, after which he joined a large protest against the recent crackdown by Egyptian security forces. He was shot by a sniper, apparently targeted because of his lengthy beard. He leaves behind a 10 month old daughter. Ahmed Bedier, an American Muslim civic

leader lost his brother Amir. Amir, an accountant, was participating in the sit ins at Rabaa as a Jan 25 revolutionary. Bedier spoke at the press conference hosted by Egyptians-Americans for Human Rights and Democracy (EAHRD), showing

videos taken of the snipers shooting into the protester’s tents, and of more than 200 charred and mutilated bodies take to Masjid Al-Iman. When police stormed Masjid Rabaa Al Adawiya, fires broke out, burning the masjid, its makeshift hospital and the bodies of the dead inside.

The Bediers were in Egypt celebrating their youngest brother's wedding which took place two days before the attack on Rabaa Square. The family had a hard time burying Amir as his parents refused to accept a false death certificate stating that he died of natural causes. Other families received certificates from the Health Ministry that stated bizarre reasons such as

suicide and disease. “Imagine reporting the crime to the very place that may have killed your brother, and asking them for justice,” Ahmed relays his trip to the police and other agencies to the Muslim Link. The family is looking at various legal options, including researching whether the ammunition was made in America and if any American or international laws were broken. “There needs to be some accountability; there has been no accountability of the masked men who killed hundreds of people.” There is sentiment in Egypt that protesters killed themselves, Bedier says this is a baseless accusation. “I went to Rabaa, I didn’t see any weapons and if they had them why didn't they use them? They were doing this unarmed.”

Deen Intensive Academy Holds Successful 3-Day Seminar By Nisa Muhammad Washington DC---For Muslims, learning the religion of Islam is a life long journey but for those who attended the first Deen Intensive Academy (DIA) that journey took a rocket’s pace. They traveled from near and far to participate in three days of study from August 22-25 on a range of topics such as “The Qur’anic Mandate: The Relevance of Hadith in the 21’st Century”; “Understanding Prayer: The Prophet’s (Peace Be Upon Him) Way; “The Learning Curve: Your Growth in Islam” and “The Necessity of Dawah.” According to the founder and President, Imam Abdul Jalil Muhammad the initiative is designed to help the development of Islamic scholars for the 21st Century and

beyond who will be equipped to meet the challenges of a faith that currently has a growing base of 1.6 billion people.

Shakir, Abdul Malik and others who were making tireless efforts to raise the banner of Islam in their respective works.

“Deen Intensive Academy yearns to be a safe haven where believers can continue to learn the Deen (Religion) of Islam and dispense it properly to people who are thirsting and hungering for it. This is just my small advancement of making Islam real in our lives,” said Imam Abdul Jalil Muhammad.

Imam Abdul Jalil reached out to Islamic leaders he was close with to join him in the vision and the DIA was born. Presenters included Imam Siraj Wahhaj, Imam of Masjid At-Taqwa in NY; Imam Zaid Shakir, co-founder of Zaytuna College, Imam Sultan Rahman Muhammad, Resident Imam at Mosque Maryam in Chicago IL; and Imam Abdullah Madyun, Imam of Masjid Ihsan, Chicago IL.

For years he had been to many Islamic workshops/seminars but few were in the urban cities where people are rushing to Islam. That lack of opportunity inspired him to start DIA. He was also inspired out of the concern for more unity among Muslims, recognizing the value of various leading voices such as Imams Siraj Wahhaj, Zaid

The initiative lived up to its name “Intensive”, with sessions starting at 8 am and lasting through 10:00 pm, breaking only for obligatory prayers and dinner.

Day one of the DIA started with Imam Siraj and was highlighted with the “Unity Jumu’ah Prayer Service” at the historic Masjid Muhammad conducted by Imam Sultan Rahman Muhammad, a Masjid his late father Imam Sultan Muhammad officiated at. For Zarinah Shakir who traveled from Trenton, NJ to attend, the weekend was, “Excellent. That’s the one word I wrote on my evaluation. This was long overdue and a wonderful experience. Mark Herring, current state senator and democratic candidate for Attorney General of Virginia, announced on August 8, 2013 the formation of a “Muslims for Herring” coalition led by six members of the Northern Virginia Muslim community. Herring represents Virginia’s District 33 which consists of parts of Loudon County and Fairfax County, and often reaches out to his large Muslim constituency which includes ADAMS Islamic Center in Northern Virginia. “He [Herring] is very committed to representing them fully,” said co chair of the Muslims for Herring coalition Yasmine Taeb. All of the co-chairs of Muslims for Herring know Senator Herring personally, whether it be through working with him or organizing events for him. “The coalition is comprised of like minded people that believe in similar issues. It’s a way for Herring to excite the people that share his vision and try to get them out to vote,” said Babur Lateef, a Muslims for Herring co -chair. The coalition helps introduce Herring to the community, whether it is through Pakistan Day celebrations that Herring attended, or ifaar dinners and jummah prayers, all are put together by Muslims for Herring.

“We make sure Senator Herring will be at events and have a booth so that he can talk about his candidacy and vision,” said Babur Lateef. “We try to do all that we can to give him exposure.” As a state senator, Herring has dealt with foreign law bills targeting Sharia law, and as Attorney General he hopes to protect the elderly and the youth. He has worked closely with law enforcement to keep drugs off the shelves in hopes to eliminate threats to the safety of the youth. He has stood with legislation that targets those that would commit financial scams against senior citizens. Herring also fights to protect the civil rights and liberties of minority groups. “Herring doesn’t care whether you’re black, brown, green, purple or yellow, he believes that you should be represented,” said Babur Lateef.

Senator Herring has addressed social issues and immigration and is for the expansion of Medicaid and Medicare. “The healthcare bill that Herring supports is incredibly important for the Muslim community and for immigrants and it affects almost every family in the state,” stated Babur Lateef. The attorney general is the chief legal advisor to the state government. In some states, the state attorney general also serves as the head of the state department of justice. As Attorney General, Mark Herring says he hopes to put aside political posturing and deal instead with issues that Virginians face day to day. Muslims for Herring has organized various events that allow community members to connect with Senator Herring on a personal level. “We’ve held town hall

Muslims for Herring is not the only coalition that exists in the area, however, it is different than most as it is a formal coalition that consists of Muslims. “I’ve seen a lot of political collations on social media such as Twitter and Facebook and coalitions… and at the federal level… but we received a very formal launch through Senator Herring’s press release,” said Yasmine Taeb. As a group, the coalition keeps the community connected to everything Mark Herring. They send out emails to inform the community of new events that are coming up related to Senator Herring, and organize events where Senator Herring can meet with his constituents. Muslims for Herring hopes that their efforts will drive as many people as possible to support Senator Herring in the election for Attorney General of Virginia on November 5, 2013 against opponent Mark Obenshain.

Another troubling point brought up by Muslims across the diaspora was the desperation angle. Elitism plays a big part too in many cases, according to local matchmakers. A lot of focus is on being financially

Divorced and widowed men and women face an even harder road to marriage. “They are divorced, and then they are divorced from the community,” says NJ, a wedding planner in the DC Metro area. She has a recently divorced sister. “The stigma is so huge. She was physi-

cally abused by her ex- husband, and now is being emotionally abused by our community.” EternalGarment.com, endorsed by 45 scholars, is a new website that is caters to previously married men and women. “I had such a hard time getting remarried after my mutual divorce,” said Reza ul Hasan, the founder of Eternal Garment. Salaam Nikah is also a local service offered for divorced and widowed Muslims by the Islamic Center of Northern Virginia- Shirley Gate masjid in Virginia. Converts have their own set of issues. “What works for families from overseas doesn’t work for us. We have so much baggage as reverts,” say R. Kerns, a community activist. Many converts are often urged to get married as soon as they accept Islam. New converts are still learning about the religion and the pressure to get married is very high. As many do not know their rights and understand differences in opinion, they think the only route to marriage is what is being presented to them. “I don’t recommend this to anyone, you are just learning the religion and getting married just makes the equation harder to solve,” says Kerns. Often with no family, or support system, many turn to the imam to act as their wali but in reality, majority of the times, the imam does not know them. “I have had people call me late at night to perform a nikkah and act as a wali,” says Imam Magid. Many are influenced into decisions that are culturally unsuitable for them. When women and men are introduced by the imam, they often don’t share their legal or financial history. “That’s what we don’t see in the imam’s office- the two sides of a brother,” says Kerns. “The lives we live as Muslims have to be an inclusive of who we are, where we came from. Many of us have dealt with prison, abuse, and need to be deprogrammed.” There is also a unrealistic focus on physicality all around. Outside the ISNA Marriage banquet, Dr. Parveen Qureshi, a volunteer who has attended enough of them to comment, says that that people are too picky; they want someone who looks like a model.

“With so many expectations and not many people lowering their expectations, it makes it much harder to find the right person,” says Malik Shabazz. Social media has made it more difficult because there is little accountability involved, and it is easy to cross boundaries. “Once you get bored with talking to someone, it is easy to just drop that whole prospect. Also unrealistic expectations, on both sides, further complicates the issue. I think eligible guys and girls need a more natural and less induced forum to meet, with sincere facilitators who want the best for the single people in our communities,” says D. Badier, a single dental student. The shortage of resources in the local community is staggering as every person interviewed by the Muslim Link complained about the lack of resources. “Imams don’t get back to you, and by the third call you feel so worthless,” expresses Denise*. Imams say that they are overwhelmed with other duties. Some do not have any expertise or interest. Others do not want to take on the responsibility of making a bad match and say that this is a communal responsibility. Others are confined to their Masajid and circles. “This is a community wide issue and all parts of the community need to come together to work on it,” says Imam Tahir Anwar. Locally in the DC Metro area, the resources the Muslim Link was able to

Imam Faizul Khan of the Islamic Society of Washington Area conducts the bi-yearly Matrimonial Brunch. He had many success stories, with about 20 couples get married every year for the past decade.

Al Rahmah Marriage Bureau uses the Muslim Volunteer Matchmakers team, matchmakers that spend these hours on your behalf. Their goal is to help their clients find that perfect person. All MVMTeam matchmakers have doctorates from the United States. “We have many impersonal institutions opening up but those of us whose families come from traditional cultures are not used to this idea. We need another layer of institutions to normalize expectations for our parents,” says Farhan, a recent immigrant. The stigma attached to the use of these institutions has collectively waned in the second and third generations, but individually some say singles need to stop waiting and proactively look for spouses. “It is a shame that we see so many beautiful females out there who are waiting to be married, but yet, we as a community have failed them. Everyone says we have a problem in our Muslim community when it comes to marriage, but no one is willing to fix it. I say to anyone who wants to fix this problem to start with their single friends,” says Naeema. The Muslim Link's reporting found that Muslims in the DMV area need more local matrimonial events, a regional cooperative database that shares resources amongst all the masajid and organizations, as well as pastoral care individualized to suit the needs of this diverse community. This is an urgent need and a collective responsibility.

They are looking at the long term survival of the country,” says Ismail. As he relays how the days played out before the coup, he recalls that on the first of July, protesters opposing President Morsi were going home. “I live right next to Tahrir Square, [Sisi] was not expecting people to go home. SCAF military leaders made an announcement, giving the country seven days. He made them go back to the streets,” says Ismail. Operation Save Democracy (OSD) is an Egyptian American Task Force that was formed to deal with the political crisis created by the military coup in Egypt. EAHRD, OSD, and EAFD also strongly condemned the burning of houses of worship including coptic churches. “During Mubarak’s era, the dirty tactic of ‘divide and rule’ was used quite skillfully by the government to create sectarian rifts between Muslims and Christians. The the leaders of the military coup have cancelled the constitution and reinstated the emergency law. As a result, one should not be surprised that more and more of these sectarian disputes and claims will appear again,” clarified OSD President Dr. Safei-Eldin Hamed,” Some of these claims may be true and some may be rumors, exaggeration, or lies that are fabricated to score political points. In such a chaotic atmosphere, it is almost impossible to find the truth.” Hamed also started Alliance of Egyptian-Americans in 2005. Locally, ADAMS Center issued a condemnation of the violence in Egypt: “We urge the Government of Egypt - and all its citizens and political parties - to eschew any such violence, which runs so counter to the principles and teachings of Islam and our Holy Prophet,, and resolve their differences calmly and rationally, and with due respect for all sides and for the rights of all Egyptians.” Egyptian-Americans have consistently marched in DC. The protest on August 31, 2013 had about 5,000 people. There have be counter-protests as well.

Military rule has all but aborted the nascent democracy. [Egypt’s] deep state in active, there is emergency law and a military ruler. All democratic values have vanished, says Hamed. “That is the biggest problem.” "Deep state" as is known is Egypt is where powerful Mubarak-era cronies continue to dominate key Egyptian institutions, both political and bureaucratic. Hamed contends that Morsi is only one candidate, from one party. “Bring him in even for one day and vote him out. The people of Egypt need to know that democratic institutions cannot be played with. Claims of majority wanting Morsi out can not be substantiated, unless we go to the ballot.” “We advised President Morsi to step down and call for elections; he didn’t listen, he thought the threat was exaggerated,” says Dr. Hamed. Not affiliated with any political party and not a member of the Ikhwan, Dr. Hamed critiques the Muslim Brotherhood’s lack of media savvy. “They had not mastered mass media, and fac[ed] enemies who have a whole empire of artists who can manipulate, craft all kinds of TV shows to mobilize people against the elected government.” Controversial U.S lawmakers, Michelle Bachmann and Steve King have been in Egypt this week, apparently endorsing the coup and crackdowns that killed hundreds. “They are extremists and are supporting the extreme,” says Ismail. “ People in Egypt may be well-educated but they are ignorant; they don’t know who they are and what they stand for.” “We are hearing the same Islamophobic rhetoric from Muslims here in Cairo,” says Bedier, who is back in Egypt. “There is high levels of anti-American sentiment coming from the coup supporters. President Obama is being called an Ikhwan in the local paper.” Some say American Muslims need to lobby Congress to stand for democratic principles and the U.S. needs to stop doing business as usual. Dr. Hamed suggests contacting local embassies and urging all countries to take a stance against the military government. No clear leaders have emerged in Egypt. Liberals involved in the Jan 25 revolution have sat out of the protests to pay

back the Brotherhood for excluding them. Bediar thinks this tit for tat politics has left the country fragmented.The military has also offered a roadmap but as this gives the coup legitimacy, the only political parties participating have no major political clout. According to other activists, an alliance has formed of 15-20 parties. “Egyptian are running the show. It is killing [General] Sisi, he has the media, support from Israel, money from the Gulf countries, and the security forces but he still hasn’t won,” says Ismail. “Those protesting in Egyptian cannot all be from the Muslim Brotherhood; they want their democratic votes back in their hands,” says Sarah Jamiel of Virginia, who recently returned from Egypt and was on the ground during the protests. Last Friday in Egypt, the ninth Jumuah of protests against the government, showed a shift in the protesters and their message as few carried the posters of Morsi that were once the symbol of the Brotherhood’s “anti-coup” coalition.

The four finger salute was everywhere signifying Rabaa, which means four, the name of the square where mass killing by security forces on Aug. 14 took place. Far from returning to normality after the army's overthrow of Morsi on July 3 following mass protests, the beacon of the Arab Spring remains in turmoil. With tourism and investment down, and food and gas prices up, as the economic situation declines, people continue to come out on the streets. “As long as the economy declines in Egypt, they will keep protesting,” says Hamed. More are joining everyday, the local population knows that they were deceived. Large protests are planned for Friday, September 13, 2013. “People are realizing that they were used, Egyptian pride makes it hard to admit their mistake, but gradually they are supporting the anti-coup movement,” says Ismail. “There are some good people in the military too, I think the change will come from within.”

Concurrently a poetry recitation session took place for those who wanted a more mellow evening. This year’s Meet the Author featured Umm Zakiyyah (Ruby Moore), A Friendship Promise, Omar Khawaja, Ilyas and Duck Search for Allah and Alexis York Lumbard, The Conference of the Birds. Margaret King, Unveiling the Messiah in the Dead Sea Scrolls, Mucahit Bilici, Finding Mecca in America, and Radwan Kouatli, Patience: The Road to Success were also featured. Anti-war, anti-coup, pro-Syria protests took place in the capital, capitalizing on the attendees. Imam Siraj Wahaj headlighted a rally for political prisoners on Saturday, August 31, 2013 in front of the White House. Always a favorite of attendees, the bazaar had 550+ vendors. Aside from jewelry, toys, perfumes, and attires, raffles and giveaways led people to booths of services, lines formed to meet celebrity scholars at the stalls set up by educational institutes, and bookstores. There were several local and national Islamic organizations soliciting for donations. “The first bazaar was a table set up by the wives of the officers selling food and hijabs,” said Rukhsana Ahmed, of Atlanta, Georgia who has been coming to ISNA since it was MSA as she waited in line with her husband. Live art demonstrations and mural painting by Nuqta Arts was a hit with the kids. Haji Noor Deen’s stall was lined with people waiting to get their names calligraphed by the world renowned Chinese calligrapher. RizDesigns took free portraits for a design project and Nadoona Fitness led exercise sessions for the ladies. Orthodox Jews against Zionism handed out flyers, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees sold olive oil from Palestine and Amnesty International booth explained what Gitmo was to several

Dawah is not just a speech or a discussion but to work in the society for justice and truth, exemplifying Islam in all affairs and strive for goodness. Inshaallah, that work will be blessed. Make yourselves ambassadors for the religion, an example of Islam, and get educated, and make sure that the religion of peace and justice is left as a legacy for the next generation. My advice is to inculcate the longing in the next generation to protect that legacy and do justice to their deen. Another thing is that Muslims have to let go of the culture from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh or wherever they came from and be good to women and give them the opportunities to learn the faith. If women learn the deen, every house will be a school of faith and every home will be a beacon of the light of Islam. Then in my opinion, it will impossible for anyone to extinguish or dim that light. To quote an Urdu idiom: Ghouls don’t enter populated homes. TML: As you travel around the country, what are the biggest challenges that you see the American-Muslims face?

I do not agree with this opinion, that masajid are not connected or are not full. The state of the masjid is better here, than for example in India or Pakistan. Even if the masajid are filled during Ramadan and not during the rest of the year it is not particular to the US; that is a disease everywhere. Another way to look at it is to be happy that they are filled during Ramadan, as it is a month of barakah. Allah’s program is set and Ramadan and other special occasions show us that we are a live ummah.

And thirdly remember that, the Prophet sallahu alayhi wasallam said that this Ummah of mine is especially blessed by Allah subhanawata 'alah. This ummah will not be given a collective punishment in the aakhirah (we will be judged individually); we will suffer through them here on this Earth. Allah will send new trials, catastrophes, and murder will be common. As we suffer through all of this, we can rejoice in the fact that as an ummah collectively we will not be punished in the eternal life.

attendees of the various programs offered by HHRD including Water for Life, Syrian Relief, Burma Relief, and skill development programs for women who want to work amongst many others. Included in her presentation were highlights of the youth empowerment programs, such as the annual Youth for Haiti, run by HHRD. These programs provide college students a chance to experience developmental and disaster relief work first hand. HHRD arranges accommodations, local transportation and security; program participants pay for their own airfare. This past spring, Youth for Haiti volunteered at a medical clinic and helped create a science lab for children in Haiti.

Commonwealth University, interned with HHRD over the summer. An aspiring teacher, she wanted to use her free time to do something for underprivileged children. She made the presentation on the Orphan Support Program. For a dollar a day, donors can support an orphan through the one on one Orphan Support Program (OPS). OPS currently supports more than 8,000 orphans around the world, up from 4,500 in 2012. The aim is to reach 10,000 orphans by 2015. “We believe that a young mind who stays in his or her own community becomes a better person overall than [a child] reared in an orphanage,” said Asif Khan, the HHRD regional head for the DC Metro area, in an interview with Muslim Link during fundraising dinner.

Through the In Kind Gifts Program, since inception HHRD has donated over eight million dollars to seven countries, presented Mohammed.

Orphans stay with their own extended families. Every orphan is a part of a cluster of 25-30 orphans from within the same vicinity. Each cluster is supervised by an HHRD social worker, indigenous to the area.

Inspired by the orphan program, Sumarah Shaikh, a student at the Virginia

In collaboration with the World Health Organization and local clinics, immunizations and medical check ups are followed up by social workers and reports are uploaded on the HHRD website for donors. Social workers also take steps to find and cultivate talents and also provide mental and emotional health services, and especially work on elimination of feelings of self-pity, said Khan. During Ramadan and the two Eids, children celebrate with HHRD staff. These gatherings provide solidarity as children meet others in similar situations. Another support service that is provided to orphans is the preservation of their lands rights. When the parents of a young Bangladeshi girl passed away, she inherited five acres of land. “We make sure that her inheritance is protected,” said Khan. After finding out what an orphan owns, HHRD submits legal paperwork to ensure that the trustee will hand the property to the orphans when he or she comes of age. Helping Hand also makes an effort to

In early August, HHRD was rated sixth by the reputed agency Charity Navigator, in the top 10 Highly Rated Charities Relying on Private Contributions list. According to the Charity Navigator website, American Muslim relief organization HHRD received a score of 68.95 in Financial Performance, and 70 in Accountability & Transparency; with the overall score of 69.25 out of 70, earning HHRD the privileged Top Four Star rank. Headquartered in Detroit, MI, HHRD was originally a part of ICNA Relief. In 2004, the two partners decided to become two separate entities and focus on their core competencies. HHRD focused on relief overseas, while ICNA Relief concentrated efforts on domestic aid in the United States and Canada.

When Nouman Ali Khan, founder and professor at Bayyinah Institute, is not teaching intensive Arabic classes, engaging the youth in various masajid in Texas, touring the country promoting his program, or recording Qur’an Weekly videos and Ramadan reminders, he goes grocery shopping for poor indigenous Muslim families in Mexico. Sound bizarre? Read on.

It was the second time Morales would be traveling to her native land for the same purpose, but this time contributions from sponsors and individuals had more than doubled. She also planned to visit five different Islamic centers in five states within Mexico. All she needed was one more boost to help her reach her $15,000 goal, an amount that her and Imam Isa Rojas from Al Hikmah Islamic Center in Mexico City estimated they would need to cover the cost of renovating a damaged mosque in the indigenous community of San Cristobal de las Casas, in the state of Chiapas.

It all began in May at the 38th Annual ICNA-MAS Convention 2013 held in the Hartford Convention Center in Connecticut from the 26th to 28th, where Khan was a guest speaker. While walking through the Marriott Hotel adjacent to the center, he was approached by WhyIslam NJ Administrative Assistant and National Spanish Outreach Coordinator, Nahela Morales, who handed him a flyer about

“It’s yours.” Morales’ jaw dropped, but his promise to fulfill the financial needs was not the most shocking. He added, “I want to go, too.” “I was speechless,” Morales recalls, “But I felt that my prayers were being answered. He (Khan) was the best suited to raise awareness about this cause.” His wife, Sofia Sharieff, joined him in his excitement to visit the US’s southern neighbor. When her husband mentioned the plans, she was immediately on board. “I have always wanted to visit Mexico,” the Texas resident says, “It was a different country but not too far. I love to meet new people and see new communities. I have to admit that I have not been "actively" giving dawah and I thought this was a good opportunity to start....and it was.” Weeks later Khan presented Morales with a check for $15,000 and made arrange-

ments to visit the needy Muslims in Chiapas for two days despite his busy schedule and numerous speaking engagements. By the time Morales was ready to leave for Mexico on June 25th, she had raised almost $30,000 in contributions through social networking, local and online fundraising, and with the support of WhyIslam. Funds came from all over the US, as well as Islamic clothing donations, books, prayer rugs, and other necessities from as far as Washington State. Maryland residents from the community of Dar-usSalaam in College Park and the Islamic Community Center of Laurel participated by donating clothing and sponsoring Ramadan iftars for their Mexican brothers and sisters.

Inside the NYPD's Muslim Spying Program A Q&A with award-winning reporters Matt Apuzzo and Adam Goldman about their new book, 'Enemies Within' By John Knefel

Rolling Stone, September 6, 2013 In a new book published this month, award-winning AP reporting team Matt Apuzzo and Adam Goldman lay out in the most complete detail yet how the NYPD created programs to infiltrate and surveil Muslim communities, mosques, student groups and political organizations following 9/11. Enemies Within: Inside the NYPD's Secret Spying Unit and bin Laden's Final Plot Against America, tells the story of Najibullah Zazi, a young Afghan-American man who attended high school in Flushing, Queens, turned against the war in Afghanistan, traveled to Pakistan to fight Americans, and ended up training with infamous senior al-Qaeda figures. As the book opens, he's speeding from Denver to New York City, mere days away from carrying out a suicide bombing operation. At the same time, the authors lay out how the NYPD brought in David Cohen, a career CIA analyst and once the nation's top spy, to create and oversee an experiment in domestic intelligence gathering without parallel, based on religious affiliation and national identity. In the world of post-9/11 NYPD Intel, if you were Muslim or Middle Eastern, you were fair game for surveillance. Yet despite all of the information gathered by the NYPD, they completely missed Zazi. Apuzzo and Goldman spoke to Rolling Stone over the phone a few days before their book came out. RS: One of the most startling revelations in the book is "terrorism enterprise investigation" (TEI) classification,

which allows for an entire mosque to be investigated as a terrorist organization. You quote a former NYPD official who actually says, "a mosque is different than a church or temple." What was the thinking behind this policy? GOLDMAN: One instance was the Tablighi Jamaat. They're actually a peace group, but they proselytize, and some bad guys had floated through them. But

for Cohen and his guys to understand what was happening in the mosque – it was pure intelligence-gathering activities. One of the extraordinary things we learned as we reported this out was that they never made a terrorism enterprise case. Not one. They had more than 50 TEIs into groups, into mosques, and they never made a terrorism enterprise case once.

"We're a country that allowed waterboarding and indefinite detention, and we're a country where the NYPD Intelligence Division has police files on what Muslims think of the State of the Union address." the group itself isn't a terrorist group, or known to be controlled by al Qaeda or any other terrorist group. Because some guys like John Walker Lindh [who became known as the "American Taliban"] or Richard Reid [the "shoe bomber"] had been converted by the Tablighi Jamaat and then gone on to fall into the hands of al Qaeda or the Taliban, the NYPD asserted that, well, it's guilt by association. Because they had floated through this group of millions and millions of people – thus the whole group was suspect. And that gave them, they say, the justification to go after that. This was a device that David Cohen and NYPD Intel used as a legal tool to spy on the mosques. If they designated a mosque a TEI, they could send in undercovers, they could send in informants, they could use secret recording devices. This was just a pipeline

That's a theme that runs throughout the book, a seeming total lack of interest in making cases. GOLDMAN: Yeah, and we've said this before. You took someone from the CIA and put them in charge of this division in this municipal police department – the CIA doesn't make cases. In fact, the last thing the CIA wants to do is make cases. The CIA is an intelligence agency, they gather intelligence overseas. The idea of making a case is anathema to them, because they don't want their sources or methods revealed in court. The saying at Intel was "we don't make cases, we make overtime." RS: The book also notes the lack of outside oversight of the NYPD. Do you see this as a case study for what can go wrong with other controversial counterterrorism programs that lack oversight?

APUZZO: It's less about what can go wrong. It's about what we've allowed, and what we've legalized, and what we've institutionalized in the decade since 9/11. We have institutionalized a drone program where the oversight is almost completely internalized. At the NYPD, a judge doesn't need to sign off on opening up an investigation into a mosque as a terrorism organization. The oversight is internal. And one of the things we keep coming back to, and we mention this in the epilogue, after the underwear bomber in 2009, there was a lot of soul searching, a lot of external review. Congress got involved, the White House said they were going to do a review asking, "How did this guy slip through our defenses?" Zazi didn't trigger that kind of review at the NYPD. Nobody at the city counsel said, "You guys have had a demographics unit, you have all these TEIs, you have all these informants, we're spending all this money. How did you guys miss Zazi, right under your nose?" Nobody said that. And it's because all of the programs are designed to be secret. GOLDMAN: I mean, we're having these same conversations about the NSA and Snowden. You're seeing that play out in a vigorous way on a national scale. RS: What were the biggest surprises you found over the course of reporting this book? APUZZO: I'll tell you, the real surprise moment for me was when Chris Hawley, who reported this series with us, did a really nice story based on some documents we'd gotten about infiltration at CUNY, Community College of New York, Queens College, about how

Egypt Military Enlists Religion to Quell Ranks By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK and MAYY EL SHEIKH New York Times, August 25, 2013 CAIRO — The Egyptian military has enlisted Muslim scholars in a propaganda campaign to persuade soldiers and policemen that they have a religious duty to obey orders to use deadly force against supporters of the ousted president, Mohamed Morsi. The effort is a signal that the generals are worried about insubordination in the ranks, after security forces have killed hundreds of their fellow Egyptians who were protesting against the military’s removal of the elected president — violence by the armed forces against civilians that is without precedent in the country’s modern history. The recourse to religion to justify the killing is also a new measure of the depth of the military’s determination to break down the main pillar of Mr. Morsi’s support, the Islamists of the Muslim Brotherhood. Indeed, after ousting Mr. Morsi in the name of tolerance, inclusiveness and an end to religious rule, the military is now sending religious messages to its troops that sound surprisingly similar to the arguments of radical militants who call for violence against political opponents whom they deem to be nonbelievers. “When somebody comes who tries to divide you, then kill them, whoever they are,” Ali Gomaa, the former mufti appointed under President Hosni Mubarak, is seen telling soldiers in a video made by the military’s Department of Moral Affairs. “Even with the sanctity and greatness of blood, the prophet permits us to fight this,” he said in the video, likening opponents of the military takeover — implicitly, the Brotherhood — to an early Islamic sect that some scholars considered to be infidels, and thus permissible to kill.

Mr. Gomaa later said the military had shown the video to troops and riot police officers across Egypt. In a video against the same backdrop, Salem Abdel Galil, a former senior scholar in the ministry that oversaw mosques under Mr. Mubarak, appeared to say such opponents were “aggressors who have to repent to God.” They are “not honorable Egyptians,” he said. “If they continue like this, then they are neither recognized by religion, nor

The new government, he added, “is waging an all-out war, and using all the weapons at their hands, including religious fatwas, to dehumanize their opponents and justify killing them.” Professor Shahin recalled similar clerical statements distributed by President Gamal Abdel Nasser when he cracked down on the Brotherhood after he took power in the 1950s. Top 8 Excuses Not to Go for Hajj By Asma Bint Shamim

Sure, guidance is in Allah’s Hands. Yet you have to work hard to qualify for that guidance. Remember that Allaah will not throw the guidance in your lap from up above. It is YOU who has to make the effort. Just like if you are hungry… Allah will not throw the food down from the sky. You have to get up and cook that food.

Excuse # 1: I am too busy with Work Some people delay Hajj because they say they can’t find time to take off from work. But don’t they see the very fact that they didn’t take time out for Hajj is the reason why Allaah kept them so busy with work? The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: “Allah says: ‘Son of Adam: Fill your time with My worship and I will fill your heart with richness, and end off your poverty. But if you don’t, I would make your hands fully busy (i.e. in worldly affairs) and I would not end off your poverty.’” (AtTirmidhi said that it is a good hadeeth) And he said: “Verily Allah tests His servant with what He has given him. So whoever is content with whatever he has been assigned, then Allah will bless him in it, and give him more! But whoever is not content (with what he has been given), then he will not be blessed in it.” (Ahmad-saheeh). If you make your intention sincerely for the sake of Allaah and do your best to take time from work, Allaah will provide it for you. “And whoever fears Allaah, He will make for him an easy way out and provide for him sustenance from sources he could never imagine. Whoever places his reliance upon Allaah, Allaah will suffice Him. Indeed Allaah is one who can achieve His purpose and He has appointed a measure for everything.” (Talaq:2-3)

Allaah orders us to make that effort. Allaah says: “O you who believe! Be careful of (your duty to) Allah and seek means of nearness to Him and strive hard in His way that you may be successful.” [Surah Maidah:35] out Salah and Zakah and I am practicing Islaam fully…

But somehow that ‘next year’ never comes.

Don’t you see? That is the whispering of the Shaytaan in your heart. He does not want you to go and earn all the reward and Jannah.

Don’t be like those people. Make your intention to go for Hajj NOW. Don’t even wait till tomorrow. Do it now and prepare for this journey, while you have the ability. For you never know when death will overtake you or some other trial may befall you that will unable you to go.

All you have to do is to try hard to improve yourself, putting your trust in Him and surely He will guide you. “And (as for) those who strive hard for Us, We will most certainly guide them in Our ways; and Allah is most surely with the doers of good.” [Ankabut:69] We all know people who weren’t fully practicing Muslims prior to making the Hajj, yet once they came back from Hajj they went under this amazing transformation and Alhamdulillah they are now practicing fully. So don’t think like that, just go.

desert during the time of the Battle of Tabuk, and the Prophet (sal Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam ) was rallying his troops for an exhaustive trip that, back then, would have taken them months. That’s when the hypocrites told the people ‘do not go out in the heat’. Allaah said to tell them: “that the fire of hell is much hotter; if only they understood.” (Tauba:81) Excuse # 8: I’ll wait until my kids are older/get married Similarly, Muslims might delay Hajj and give themselves time by saying, “let me wait till my kids are older, or till my daughter gets married (and their daughter may only be 5 years old!)… let me wait till I do this , let me wait till I do that.”

This is also just a way of procrastination and nothing else. Remember that hajj is an obligation in Islaam. It is fardh upon you. If you have the means and you have not yet done your obligatory hajj, the ulama say that it is better for you to do Hajj, rather than delaying it if your kids are young. The Prophet (sal Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam ) said, “Race to good deeds before a time and a fitnah comes, (a test) that will sweep over you like the darkest of the darkest nights.” Obviously, for the one whose kids are of marriageable age and has just enough money for either Hajj or marriage, the Ulama say: “If there is a conflict between the father’s Hajj and the son’s getting married, because the father only has enough money for one of them, then

he should look to see whether his son’s marriage is essential right now, or can it be delayed? If the son needs to get married and fears that he may do something haraam, then getting him married takes precedence over the father’s doing Hajj.” (www.islamqa.com) Beware of lame excuses! The Prophet (sal Allaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam ) advised a man: “Pray your prayer as if it is your last, as if you are seeing Him (Allah), for even if you do not see Him then He sees you. And give up hope (of obtaining) what other’s possess, then you will live a rich life. And beware of anything that you might (later) have to make an excuse for.” (Bukhari in his al-Tarikh, and al-Tabarani-saheeh)

From New York, two Muslim men, one Pakistani and one Mexican, arranged with Morales to fly to Mexico to assist after hearing about the trip at the ICNA conference, as well. From New Jersey, two young sisters who attend the same mosque as Morales, one Egyptian, and the other Tunisian and Morales took off on their connecting flight to Houston where they were met by another female volunteer from Maryland, Malak Soussi, a Moroccan who is fluent in Spanish. From Houston, the four flew to Mexico City, where they were picked up by members of the Al Hikmah Islamic Center and joined by the brothers from New York.

After touring the capital, the crew travelled to Tequesquitengo, Morales, to hear lectures on sustainable ecological projects and reforestation by Brother Omar Weston and to participate in a tree-planting event. Students from local universities were in attendance and asked questions about Islam as Morales and volunteers handed out WhyIslam brochures in Spanish. The team, now joined by Imam Isa Rojas and other Muslims from Mexico City, moved on taking a flight to the state of Chiapas, where they were scheduled to visit the Muslims of Masjid Al Kauthar in San Cristobal de las Casas; an indigenous Mayan community where Islam has been growing steadily since the early 90’s. The mosque, which has a tin rooftop and no wudu area, was badly damaged and needed repairs, which would be funded by the donations received by Morales. The greater part of the Mexican outreach tour would be spent in Chiapas, from July 1st to the 11th, coordinating with

YS: The Al Rahmah Seminary is a dream and vision that is now becoming a reality. Our launch is this month and we currently have five students enrolled. The seminary is an Alim and Islamic Scholarship program that will produce tomorrow’s Muslim leaders. Students will study a rigorous Islamic Studies Program tailored for American needs. Muslims will never be rooted in this land until we produce our own scholars who understand the intellectual history of the people they are serving.

Most of these families live in very modest homes, built out of wooden planks, sheets, and tin roofs on bare, dirt floors. When individuals were asked what they needed from the grocery store, they only asked for five items: oatmeal, sugar, salt, soap, and rice. Sharieff was excited to do as much as she could in the short amount of time they had. She said, “We had only one day to spend with the Muslim community. In that one day, we went grocery shopping for 14 families and distributed the food, we handed out new clothes to the community and I got to cook!” She prepared food on a traditional open flame because the mosque does not have a kitchen and neither do most of the worshippers’ homes. “Nouman made a few videos to promote

enhancing their grasp in areas that would increase their appeal and give them a more comprehensive skill set required to serve. Would it not be ideal to have an Islamic Scholar who is also a physician, or a historian, or a politician, an attorney, a psychologist, or a journalist. The opportunities are immense. What makes this program unique from other Alim Programs is that it is for both males, and females. For far too long the womenfolk of our Ummah have been starved of in-depth learning of the sacred sciences, and as a result, we see a serious shortage of female Muslim Scholars, traditionally trained. TML: How has the community received you? YS: So far, the settling in period has been great, and I am thankful to Allah. TML: What are you goals for the community? What gaps have you seen that need filling and how do you aim to fill them? YS: One of the gaps I have observed specifically in the Baltimore area is civic engagement, service work and interfaith. There are efforts taking place, but I have not seen a system with a clear focus and direction. One of the ways I aim to establish this effort is by seeking a dawah and outreach coordinator, and establish a core group of dedicated and passionate volunteers, willing to enhance this noble cause.

>> continued from pg 36 awareness of the growing community, he had an interview with the local news station, he gave a lecture on unity at the (mosque’s) open house and we had cake....that was a big deal.” Although Khan and his wife only spent one full day in San Cristobal de las Casas, the trip was an eye-opener for them both and also for the other volunteers. “They don’t need us, we need them,” Khan said about the Muslims in Chiapas after observing how little they have, but yet how happy they are. “We should be grateful for what we have, our houses, cars, clothes and conveniences but we should have gratitude most for being blessed with Islam....it opens up doors and opportunities you would never be able to imagine.” Khan also encourages Muslims in the US to learn other languages and use their talents to help others understand Islam. “Living in America, we should be very conscious of the growing population of Muslims around us. The Latino community is embracing Islam at a rapid rate and we should be ready to welcome them and have resources available to them to further their understanding.” Soussi, the Moroccan volunteer recently spent a year in Spain in order to perfect her Spanish. Before the summer she never imagined she would be using it in Mexico with other Muslims, but when she heard about Morales’ efforts through her mother, she decided to travel and help. The 20 year old Maryland resident says, “I was really interested in helping people in Mexico and to get closer to Allah, I wanted to grow better as a Muslim and see how much we take for granted even if it meant stepping out of my comfort zone.” Soussi was in Mexico for two weeks, during which she helped paint the Al Kauthar mosque and distribute clothing. “What I learned from visiting the community in Chiapas is that I'm so fortunate and I take so much for granted. Allah has blessed me with so much yet I'm still ungrateful.” The two volunteers from New York were in Chiapas until July 6th and during their stay, they had soccer uniforms made for all of the men and children of the Al Kauthar Muslim community. There was also a kid’s pre-Ramadan party organized with inflatable play areas, balloons, candy, and games which was open to the whole village. The additional masjid renovations were well underway, as well,

with foundations laid out for the new bathrooms and wudu areas for men and women. After the stay in Chiapas, the tour continued with Morales and Imam Isa Rojas visiting Guadalajara, Jalisco, to distribute Islamic material, teach classes, conduct Q&A sessions, and organize three iftars. They left the community with their Eid festivities prepaid and zakat for needy families. Due to time restrictions, the

team was unable to visit the city of Puebla, but they left material in Mexico City which would be picked up and delivered to the Muslims there, as well as any other areas in need. Volunteers and community leaders met to discuss future plans for more outreach efforts in Mexico. This year’s dawah trip ended July 26th, with Morales’ return to her home in New Jersey. She hopes that the efforts in Mexico can continue with

annual trips and more Muslim leaders like Nouman Ali Khan raising awareness of the needs of the Mexican Islamic community. The renovations for Masjid Al Kauthar in San Cristobal de las Casas are ongoing, and WhyIslam and Morales hope to continue fundraising to cover the costs.

“Muslims are supposed to bring benefit and prevent harm to everyone and anything, not just Muslims.” Alpha Lambda Mu has attracted some criticism for their appropriation of ‘exclusivist ideals’. One group, Cornell Muslim Dissents, was particularly vocal. The author of a viral post on tumblr wondered why any ‘religious organization would strive to be modelled after a gendered institution with roots in white supremacy and elitism. I am all for Muslim unity and coalition, but we need to revolutionize what that looks like, rather than adopting discriminatory structures’. Ali’s response? “In order for us to craft this Muslim-American identity, we’re going to need to have a number of conversations along the way. It’s difficult to have this conversation when we’re constantly telling people what Islam isn’t instead of what it is due to preemptive attacks with hidden agendas. I think it’s time to calm down and have intelligent, open-minded conversations if we want to make any progress. We’re taking what’s good from the fraternity model and leaving what’s bad.”

The fraternity is leaving the culture of excessive partying, and the elitist mentality by choosing members based on that which is in their control. “We’re not looking for perfect Muslims. None of us is perfect. We would rather take a humble struggler who understands his faults and believes that he can overcome his challenges by joining the fraternity, than someone who is too blinded by arrogance to see any room for self-improvement. We’ll grow together, we’ll keep each other in check, and we’ll hopefully all come out as better people and better contributors to society.” The role of Islam in America is a notoriously divisive subject; in the wake of the Boston bombings anti-Islamic sentiment was everywhere on social and traditional media even before any information was known about the perpetrator of the attack. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the predictable response of the right-wing media, the Islamic community was at the forefront of the response to the Boston attack, with Alpha Lambda Mu among those fund-raising for the victims. Yet, Islam is still often vilified in the national press. In such a seemingly hostile environment, could it be possible that Alpha Lambda Mu was a step towards the further integration of Muslims into America? “Absolutely not,” says Ali. “We cannot integrate or assimilate into a society that we’re already a part of. “I personally grew up in Plano, Texas. I went to public school, I played Xbox Live all the time with my friends who weren’t Muslim, and I regrettably ate too much fast food. I’m a proud American Muslim, and I see no contradiction of those two titles. Islam is my moral compass that guides every aspect of my life, but it also leaves room for our cul-

tural experiences.” Something that Ali speaks particularly eloquently on is the interesting position of being a Muslim in modern America: “One of the beautiful things about Islam is that it is a religion that is meant to fit different times and different places. “Yes, there are core values that do not change regardless of where the religion is established, but there is room for flexibility. An exciting challenge we have as young Muslims in the United States is figuring out how Islam fits in 21st century America. We can only do this with a strong understanding of the religious tradition and a strong understanding of the cultural reality of our day. The synthesis of the two is indeed Islam itself, and lacking in either understanding calls for recalibration. The goal is balance.” Texas – to the uninitiated – seems like an odd place for a Muslim fraternity to establish itself, but Ali is quick to leap to its defence: “The amount of love we’ve been getting from all around the world eclipses the negativity that Muslims have received and gives us hope for a brighter future of tolerance, understanding, peace, and love for each other.” With identity crisis fast becoming a feature of the modern teenager, creating a safe environment for Muslims to hold onto their beliefs without becoming ostracised from the wider community seems like a positive solution to a tricky dilemma. “We hope that after all is said and done, we will have a strong group of guys who will stand up for social justice, for the needy, and for their societies just as the religion calls them to do.” Jo Barrow is editor of York Vision, a student newspaper.
