At a roundtable, fifteen Muslims nervously share stories about their financial problems. It is a new concept especially for older immigrants, not used to airing their laundry in public, more so inside a masjid. They are at the Dar al Noor Islamic Center in Manassas, VA located in a county

speak up, after seeing others in the same situation.

Muslim Link Staff Reporter A small ad in the Columbia Flyer lured Steve Baum to the Living Well Health Fair. On April 27th 2013, approximately, a one hundred and fifty people and fifty volunteers attended this year's health fair to get a checkup. Baum has insurance but doesn't get the time to make the several appointments needed to see the different specialists, so he loved the opportunity of taking care of all is needs in one place, at one time. The Health Fair was held in at the Howard County General Hospital Sponsored by the Howard County Muslim Council. Member of the Board of Directors, Rashid Shourbaja, is a former president of the council. He has been with the council since it started 11 years ago. "Being in collaboration with the hospital helped us, they provided the space for us," he said. However, the change in venue and limited access attributed to the lower attendance.

Women for Empowerment, the real estate team of Bob Lucido and the Horizon foundation co- sponsored the fair. "We have the same values, the same interests to make Howard County a better place for everyone," said Anwer Hasan, president of the Howard County Muslim Council. This is the tenth year of the health fair. Samina Chowdhury was one of the organizers. Alberta Workman, R.N. and Elizabeth Gier, R.N. from the Wellness Center at HoCo General were volunteering for the first time hosted the blood pressure booth around 140 people had their blood pressure tested . "Quite a few had high blood pressure, enough to be concerned," said Gier. The attendees were receptive to the nurses advice to reduce spices, salt and make an effort to lose weight. A large room was set with tables as booths and each specialist manned their booth; infectious disease specialists, dental surgeons, cardiologists, child

specialists. A separate room was reserved for visions and hearing screening. THealth Fair focused strongly on providing knowledge and awareness of early detection of illnesses. Conversations with the specialists about health care reform confirmed confusion and lack of information on the impact that it will have on their medical practices. " It is like a large cloud Dr.

Imran Chowdhury, an infectious disease specialist, "I am a tremendous supporter of universal healthcare. It is appalling that some people in this day and age have no access to healthcare. European countries do a much better job taking care of its citizens," said Baum.

Reaching Out With Mercy to HIV+ Muslims By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter HIV/AIDS advocates from across the United States gathered in Washington D.C. this past February to participate in AIDS Watch 2013, the nation’s largest annual constituent-based federal advocacy event with 200 legislative meetings and 170 attendees. One of those attendees was Khadijah Abdullah, a graduate in public health. Abdullah along with Asma Hamid R.N. attended a meeting in Congresswoman Barbara Lee’s (D-Calif.) office. The two young activists represented the advocacy organization RAHMA of which Abdullah is the founder and president. Having seen firsthand the stigmatization HIV+ Muslims face within their own community, she founded RAHMA in Washington D.C., where HIV infections rates are the highest in the nation. Knowing that she wanted an Arabic name and an acronym, with the help of two other friends, she decided on Reaching All HIV+ Muslims (RAHMA),

“Many Muslims believe that HIV does not affect our community. This is far from the truth. Many of our brothers and sisters are living with HIV and they do not have anyone to turn to. They are afraid of the stigma and being shunned from the community,” which translates into the word mercy. Abdullah is familiar with working with families in need. Her work with AmeriCorps VISTA at Horton’s Kids gave her the skills necessary for her work with RAHMA. Parenting classes, workforce development classes, case management, legal aid and other services and helping empower families in Ward 8 through building partnerships with local organizations are highlights in her advocacy resume. Most importantly, spurred by thoughts of her friend who contracted HIV, she set up biweekly

HIV testing on site and coordinated HIV education workshops. “Many Muslims believe that HIV does not affect our community. This is far from the truth. Many of our brothers and sisters are living with HIV and they do not have anyone to turn to. They are afraid of the stigma and being shunned from the community,” says Abdullah. The Muslim community still has many misconceptions about HIV- the Human Immunodeficiency Virus.

HIV cannot reproduce outside the human body. It is not spread by: • Air or water. • Insects, including mosquitoes. Studies conducted by CDC researchers and others have shown no evidence of HIV transmission from insects. • Saliva, tears, or sweat. There is no documented case of HIV being transmitted by spitting. • Casual contact like shaking hands or sharing dishes.

Qur'an Programs Highlighted At First Maryum Islamic Center Fundraiser By Muslim Link Staff On Saturday, June 8, 2013, one of Maryland's newest Islamic centers -- the Maryum Islamic Center in Ellicot City, Maryland -- held its first fundraiser with an attendance of around 100 guests. The center, renting the second floor of an office building, formed about one year ago and is led by Imam Mahmoud Abdel-Hady, a long time teacher and former Imam of Dar Al-Taqwa. Chairman of the Board Azim Salehi explained the history and vision of Maryum Center at the dinner, saying the center's focus in on education and outreach to the public.

The center aims to share the message of Islam with 10,000 families in Howard County through mailings, weekly sessions at the center, meetings at public libraries, and other avenues like billboards. Salehi also said Maryum Islamic Center's goals include forming a think tank to address issues particular to American Muslims, and to establish a library and media center.

A particular focus for the evening was the IQRA progam which attracts students from around the area who want to establish a relationship with the Qur'an. IQRA -- the Institute of Qur'an Recitation and Application -- is led by Hafiz Muhammad Ishaq and has mostly yougn teachers who can relate well with students. IQRA students were the highlight of the evening as they opened the program with recitation of the Qur'an and sang

anasheed. Hafiz Muhammad Ishaq said IQRA aims to produce graduates who will continue to spread the proper recitation, memorization, and application of the Qur'an throughout the region. Imam Mahmoud gives regular lectures at the center, including a course to learn the Arabic language. Visit www.maryumcenter.com to learn more.

Prince George’s County Muslim Council Hosts First Annual Cookout By Jameel Aalim-Johnson

Muslim Link Contributing Writer Sandwiched between rainy days as a result of a tropical storm, Allah blessed Prince George’s County Muslim Council with a beautiful day on Sunday June 9, 2013 to host its First Annual Cookout. The community event took place at Watkins Regional Park located in Upper Marlboro. Having promoted the event with an offer of free meals for the first 200 arrivals, 200 meal tickets were presented within the first hour of food service. Unofficial counts approximate nearly 500 attendees throughout the day. The day’s activities included three-onthree basketball for teens, face painting and water balloon fights for kids, and an archery demonstration for women and youth. Food was supplied by Crown Fried Chicken and Kabob of Fort Washington, Sweet Tooth Café of Largo, and Pizza Roma of College Park. One of the highlights of the day was a brief lecture by University of Medina Ph.D candidate Tahir Wyatt of Philadelphia. Halal fixed-income investing —fact or fiction?

~ By Joshua Brockwell ~ Author’s note: This is the first installment of a five-part feature on investing. We hope that our readers use the series to learn more about this important subject. From building institutions to preparing for our own retirement, investing is an important, though often misunderstood, part of the American Muslim experience. To recap, last time we discussed stocks and mutual funds in general. We also learned that mutual funds—like the Azzad Funds— pool the assets of a large number of investors and buy stocks or other investments on behalf of those people. They can offer professional money management and a mix of stocks that might not all go up or down in price at the same time. Mutual fund shares, like shares of stock, are redeemable, meaning that they can be sold back to the fund at any time for the current market value, minus redemption fees. Now we turn to halal stocks and stock funds. But before we dive into the dos and don’ts of picking stocks according to the Shariah, a quick note about Islamic economics: The ethics of Islamic economics do not discard the objective of making money and maximizing profits. Ethics exist to regulate profit maximization by making sure that social welfare isn’t sacrificed. Buyers and sellers in the market are allowed to make money and maximize profits as long as it is done ethically, or in a halal way.

Masjid Muhammad Partners with Office of Aging to Become First Halal Nutrition Site for Seniors By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter The effort started last Ramadan when a group of Muslim taxi and limo drivers, at the behest of Imam Talib Shareef of Masjid Muhammad, volunteered their time by driving seniors free of cost across the city. Masjid Muhammad in Washington D.C. is the home to the oldest African-American Muslim community in the United States. This was one part of a long term ‘geospatial’ program for seniors called Kibar Senior Center located at Masjid Muhammad. This program includes transportation, real estate planning and other legal needs, health counseling including nutrition and an onsite day care. Kibar means seniors in Turkish and old age in Arabic.

Imam Shareef says that Masjid Muhamamad had wanted to do something for seniors of all faiths for a while. They

MakeSpace: 'The non-judgemental zone' for American Muslim Youth >> SPACE, Continued from Page 11 dals, she enters the divine space, her bright pink painted toes tiptoeing on the lush red carpet of the masjid. The adhan is called, she follows along with the congregation and feels at peace... until a woman comes up to her and yanks her scarf over her hair and yells, “your prayer isn’t accepted, look at the way you are dressed. Don’t you know that is it haram to pray with nail polish!” Haniya isn’t real but her story is and Fatimah Popal has heard many of them. There are many Haniyas amongst us who never come back to the masjid or to Islam because of experiences like this, or because they feel like they just don’t belong. Popal with her husband, Imam Zia Makhdoom and a group of committed individuals lead MakeSpace. Formed a year ago in Alexandria, Virginia, Make Space is a multi-generational, non-judgmental community hub for American Muslims, say leaders. The name of the organization comes from the verse of Surah Mujadillah in the Quran. ‘O you who have believed, when you are told, "Space yourselves" in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you.’ Imam Zia is the spark behind MakeSpace. In a video he sent out before the fundraiser, he says the young generation is the most in touch with social and cultural problems and have the solutions. Imam Zia is the former Imam of the Mustafa Center in Annandale, Virginia. Imam Zia believes that the youth and young professionals are familiar with the undercurrents of this society. “The youth are not the future, they are the present. They need our attention, now. We need to stop thinking of them as future empowered leaders,” said Imam Zia. He points out that 6 out of 10 American Muslims are under the age of 40. Most American Muslims are

second or third generation and they need to have a place where their issues are handled. MakeSpace raised over $66,000 at their first fundraiser held on June 7th, 2013. The free fundraising dinner was held to raise funds for Ramadan events and to purchase or build a community center. Currently all events are held at donated office suites, on 10400 Eaton Pl. in Fairfax and the Dunya Banquet Hall.

teaches Islam and does not fear pointing out the difference between cultural Islam and true Islam,” says B.C. about Imam Zia. Sumoyya Sharifi has been involved since the project started as her husband is a current board member. “It is a really important project; we need more

organizations like this, where do those youth go that feel like they don’t belong?” Make Space offers leadership roles to youth, which the board feels are grossly overlooked contributors to the Ummah. “MakeSpace is a much needed concept. It is where we go to practice Islam

After Quran and nasheed presentations and testimonies by the youth involved in MakeSpace, Aatif Sharieff, an architect and member, unveiled his vision of the first all American modern musalla, with business incubation rooms, a cafe, using natural light with eco-friendly wudu stations, and lounges. “We can’t keep importing foreign structures and dropping them on American soil,” says Sharieff. Architecturally, Makes Space wants the future space to reflect modern Islamic design that responds to an American vernacular. Inclusive, within the boundaries of Islam, MakeSpace is about being comfortable with who you are and with what defines you say members. “Let [people] go at their pace, not everyone is at the same level of iman. Just as the Quran was not revealed overnight, it took years,” Popal said, explaining the Make Space philosophy as she conducted the fundraising event. The ladies halaqah led by Popal is a regular MakSpace event, where a room packed with girls and women of different ages and ethnicities gather biweekly to discuss and learn. Yusra O. from Silver Springs, MD attended a halaqah led by Fatima Mirza, a PhD student in social work. “I found the halaqah to be extremely informative and relevant. She went through kind of a FAQ of counseling and discussed how we can get over the stigma that comes with seeking help. It was a 'nonjudgment' zone. It was my first time there yet I felt welcomed and like I was a part of the community,” says Yusra. B.C. is a brother who accepted Islam and is mentored by Imam Zia. “He

June 21st - July 11th 2013 in its most purest sense. MakeSpace is where I belong,” shared Sarah, a Makespace board member in a video. She was unable to attend the fundraiser as she was volunteering at an orphanage in Mexico. Many elders in the community wonder why organizations such as Make Space have broken away from the masjid. ”It is a cultural difference, especially with this generation. People want opportunities and you have to be able to give it by providing platforms like this,” says Sharifi. MakeSpace does provide services to masajid, organizing volunteers to clean masajid and filling gaps in services that masajid may not offer. Transparency and relevance are core concerns of the team, as they try to stay on the vanguard of excellence in serving the needs of the community. They aim to share where every penny that comes into the organization is spent. All khutbahs and talks are about relevant topics to the attendees; fathers and sons can discuss issues on the drive home from Jumuah. Regular recreational activities include a ladies book club and a weekend biking club, yoga, basketball, jumuah and Eid Salah. “Its really beneficial that Make Space is offering something like this,” says a volunteer. A high schooler tweeted, “skipping the prom to attend the MakeSpace fundraiser.” On Saturday mornings, you will find Make Space volunteers at the Capitol Area Food Bank. They have also partnered with ALIVE! (ALexandrians InVolved Ecumenically)to help distribute grocery to the elderly and low income families. ALIVE is a nonprofit organization of volunteers from over 40 religious congregations and the community working together to help those in need in Alexandria, Virginia. “If you believe that American Muslims should be divided based on ethnicity and sectarian lines then MakeSpace is not for you,” says Imam Zia.

Ousama, a speaker at the event, “We need to change the way Muslim interact with each other. We should direct to changing ourselves for better; Muslims are still your brothers and sisters even if they don’t think you are.” The plan isn’t to make yet another place or a fortress for an exclusive group of people.

By Muslim Link Contributing Writers

Serving the Northern Virginia Muslim community for the past 13 years, the school presently has one hundred and fifty students enrolled. The WIA administration expects an estimated two hundred students will enroll for the school year 2013-2014.

Alexandria, Virginia is the home of the Washington International Academy, a Pre-K to 8th grade Islamic school. The

The fundraising goal for the event was $300,000. The school plans on creating a library and aims to upgrade current

school technology for the new school calendar year. New computers and smart boards for the classrooms are on the list. Currently, the school has two smart boards and according to the administration the students love learning with them. The funds are also needed to pay the school’s rent over the summer. Prolific speaker and writer, Dr. Jamal Badawi gave the keynote address, and Br. Ousama Aburushaid conducted the fundraiser.

The fundraiser brought in $ 119,000, hitting below the expected target of $300,000. Committed parents from the Parent Teacher’s Association of WIA were actively involved in planning and executing the event, from selling tickets to table arrangements. According to a statement by Dar Al-Hijrah Islamic Center, WIA bylaws were recently amended. Dar Al-Hijrah requested community members, parents, educational experts, and others to join the WIA board of directors. Thirteen candidates expressed their interests to serve their community through WIA. Through a strict selection process, the Dar Al-Hijrah board of directors elected the new board of Washington International Academy. Nine members joined the board of for the two-year term. The 2013-2015 board members include: Dr. Dawood Abdelrahman, Dr. Hany Aly, Dr. Jamal Nouh, Salman Saeed, and Omar Rosario. The school also welcomes Washington International Academy parents to the board: Beth Selma Boyd, a public school teacher, Dr. Bashir Shaikh, Nadia Siad, and Abdul-Mumin Zaid, an IT professional. The new board members held a meeting on May 5th, 2013 to elect officers. Salman Saeed, the original founder of WIA was elected Chairman. AbdulMumin Zaid will serve as Vice Chairman and Nadia Siad and Beth Selma Boyed as treasurer and secretary, respectively. The outgoing board members Dr. Muhammad Ashraf, Sr. Nawel Hamed, Br. Selling Guantanamo: Exploring the Propaganda Surrounding America’s Most Notorious Military Prison The Muslim Link Interviews the Author of a Timely New Book On Guantanamo By Fatimah Waseem Muslim Link Staff Reporter When the Bush administration transported twenty prisoners to the east end of Guantanamo Bay – the military penal complex on a navy base in Cuba – it began one of the darkest chapters in American history.

on three fronts. Guantanamo provided evidence of a quick military victory where the pawns of the game – the prisoners – were contained behind parts. Secondly, the prisoners were ample substitutes for the perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks. Thirdly, and

More than half of these 166 prisoners of war – carefully deemed ‘dangerous and unlawful combatants’ by Washington – had not been charged for over 11 years. Many more were caught in legal limbo and political haywire, despite being cleared for release.

From initiation to President Obama’s failed commitment to deliver on election pledges to close the prison, the book makes an enticing argument that Washington used its prisoners as pawns in an orchestrated propaganda war. His alternative explanation for the rationale artfully exposes the holes of the Guantanamo Bay narrative

"One of the reasons for Guantanamo was that it provided a virtual prisoner parade, evidence of a quick victory in Afghanistan so that the American public could be talked into going to war against Iraq. As we see almost every day in the news, there was no victory in Afghanistan."

Our nation was fighting the socalled war on terror in Afghanistan and Iraq and these prisoners were evidence of our victory. And the American public was sold. John Hickman, an associate professor of government, explores how the government manufactured the Guantanamo Bay lie in his new book, Selling Guantanamo: Exploring the Propaganda Surrounding America’s Most Notorious Military Prison.

Hickman emphasizes that the prison was not a stopgap, reasonable response to the exigencies of wartime.

most importantly, the prison was a signal that the U.S. intended to reconstruct international order with its nations as a global hegemony. Treating prisoners as illegal combatants rather than prisoners of war as mandated under the Geneva Conventions was only the beginning of this massive propaganda campaign, Hickman writes. Critiquing statements made by Donald Rumsfeld, former president Bush, and other top level officials,

cepted and received as a substitute. The book loses its edge when it dips into age-old historical comparisons; though often relevant to the Guantanamo critique, the casual digressions steer away from the power of Hickman’s critique. But his comparisons to three notorious military prisons – the internment of Chiricahua Apache tribe in Florida in the late 19th century, the internment of British fascists on the Isle of the Man in the 1940s, and the in-

ternment of Haitian “boat people” at Guantanamo in the 1980s – are very refreshing. Distinguishing putative from actual purposes, the examples symbolically represent so-called security threats greater than their true form. That chapter and one hidden in the book’s appendix - Guantanamo in popular culture - are special treats for the reader. But Hickman does not disappoint. He recognizes that war threatens to cultivate language not only as a description but a justification for war. He details prisoner abuses and the timeline leading up to the prison’s initiation and later efforts to keep its doors open. In this bill of goods, one thing is very clear: the goods – the prisoners - simply did not measure up to advertising. For those looking for a holistic critique on the underpinnings of Guantanamo Bay, Hickman’s book is an incisive starting point. Its concluding remarks on President Barack Obama’s responses and the prison’s implications on our foreign policy may run thin, but for the rest of the book, the reader is sold. Do not be deceived if Selling Guantanamo reads like a history. The prisoners at Guantanamo Bay are still starving for justice. The Muslim Link connected with the author, John Hickman, for an exclusive interview. Hickman is an associate professor of government at Berry College in Mount Berry,

Georgia. What was your reasoning behind the title of your book, “Selling Guantanamo”? Why did the public ‘buy’ this bill of goods on the rationale for detaining ‘unlawful combatants’? You are correct that the title reflects the fact that the American people were purposefully deceived about the Bush administration’s Guantanamo decision. The public relations fraud succeeded because popular anxiety was deliberately heightened rather than calmed by the administration for many months after September 11, 2001. Compare that with the rather greater fortitude we displayed when facing the threat of nuclear annihilation during the Cold War! So, do you believe the public was sold a version of the so-called wars on terror in Iraq and Afghanistan? What is Guantanamo’s place in this picture? Did the prison create a misguided policy disaster or cement one already in place? The War on Terror elicited a lot of skepticism because it was supposed to be a struggle against a form of political violence rather than against a specific enemy. In practice it became a collection of counterinsurgencies waged from North Africa to Southeast Asia against al-Qaeda and entities that could be deemed to be al-Qaeda affiliates. Of course all of the rationales for the War in Iraq were exposed as nonsense during the occupation. I argue that one of the reasons for Guantanamo was that it provided a virtual prisoner parade, evidence of a quick victory in Afghanistan so that the American public could be talked into going to war against Iraq. In fact, as we see almost every day in the news, there was no victory in Afghanistan.

You present three alternative theories in your book. What holes in the growing body of literature on Guantanamo’s failures did you hope to fill with your book? In my research I discovered that no one had offered a comprehensive critique of all three of the justifications that had been offered by the Bush administration and are still being repeated. What I found was that the prisoners transferred to Guantanamo were not terrorist supermen or “the worst of the worst.” They were not important subjects for interrogation by torture and Guantanamo is not a place where interrogation by torture was especially effective. Very few of the prisoners was even remotely worth prosecuting for war crimes. They come up with anyone conceivably worth prosecuting, in 2003 the Bush administration had to move prisoners held in CIA black sites to Guantanamo. So, what’s next? Do you believe the Obama administration will close the prison? Or could the prison and it’s underlying goals simply undergo cosmetic changes? With the exception of the one major achievement of his presidency – health care reform – President Obama seems ever ready to give into Republican intransigence. I suspect he hopes that the 166 prisoners held there are just forgotten. He probably hopes his campaign promise to close the prison camp is forgotten. But there may be some lasting implications of the prison on our foreign policy? Do you believe the prison will become precedent for decision-making by future lawmakers or an unfortunate exception? Given our track record, will there be another Guantanamo? This is not the first time that a spe-

cial population of prisoners has been imprisoned on an island prison to stage a spectacle of punishment. What distinguishes it from other cases is that it has dragged on for more than a decade and it now has a supportive policy constituency. Republican politicians are still deriving benefits from the deception. This political pathology could happen again in America and elsewhere. That’s part of the reason I wrote my book.

years American Muslim might be detained like the Japanese Americans. Is this a far fetched conspiracy theory, or is it possible?

What was the mainstream media’s biggest flaw in covering the Guantanamo narrative?

That someone in the Bush administration contemplated doing something so horrible – a concentration camp of hostages - is possible, but I have trouble believing that such a proposal would have gotten very far. At the time, senior decisionmakers could derive political advantage from having hundreds of war captives to display but not several million innocents interned behind barbed wire.

Reporters and editors permitted their professional ambition, intellectual laziness and fear of public opinion to stop them from performing their crucial function in a liberal democracy. Those who owned the news sources rewarded them for that failure.

On another note, it seems like dissenting voices like yours are mostly ignored or dismissed by the general public. Why do you think that is the case? Among which sectors of the American public do you find the most positive response? The most negative response?

Are some media outlets more complicit than others in selling Guantanamo? What media outlets do you follow? What media outlets do you consider propaganda?

Much of the public is simply too distracted by trash popular culture and too politically disempowered to decide to ignore or dismiss dissent. In the absence of a crisis, the audience for civil liberty and foreign policy issues is normally a minority of that general public. So far the people most interested in my book are civil liberties and peace activists, American Muslims, and academics who teach International Relations, Middle East Studies, American Studies, and Native American Studies. I am pleased with that kind of diversity.

Their failure was general. The problem with the broadcast news sources, Fox News in particular, just seems so much more obvious. That said, there are news sources providing quality news coverage on many other foreign policy issues. The New York Times and Guardian are still among the best print news sources. The Los Angeles Times is good. Foreign Policy magazine makes its material interesting. Unfortunately where news coverage of the Middle East on National Public Radio was once quite good, something is being lost. Some people say there is evidence the government has prepared large camp-like facilities designed to detained thousands of people in case of an internment. Some American Muslims believe in the coming

To ensure the pilot’s success, JP Morgan Chase is being asked to invest $10 million in a 1%, 20-year loan. JP Morgan Chase had the highest number of Prince William foreclosures, exceeding $300 million. “This is a step in the right direction but more work needs to be done,” comments Khan. Muslim families are clearly not getting the help that they need early in the process, according to the mortgage counselors that came to attend sessions at the masjid. The Tuurs*, an elderly couple worked aggressively with VOICE, who even connected them to an attorney, but because they had come so late in the process they were faced with very limited options. They ended up losing their home, and have since relocated to an apartment. In the Tuur’s* case language and culture played a big part in getting the help that they needed. “We recognize that many community members were hit hard by the predatory lenders, who have effectively taken advantage of homeowners,” says Imam Johari. Some people are ashamed that they were ‘bamboozled’, and others bought more than they could afford. “Other communities are on top of this issue, whereas we are doing this for the first time,” says Khan. From what Khan has seen in the Muslim community, families can not wait until they have received a certain number of notices to look for help. Muslims face an additional burden of the stigma of taking riba. According to most Islamic scholars interest based loans are not permissible. Imam Johari states that unlike in churches, many Muslims are ashamed to come forward, scared that they will hear an ‘astaghfirullah and brother you shouldn’t have done it’ tirade. Many wealthier masajids think that they do not have this issue in the congregation.

You may be wondering how we know for sure which lines of business are impermissible and how the financial tests are derived. Not everyone agrees on the right way to go about screening out the impermissible, let alone the questionable, candidates for investment. So, it helps to have a set of universally applied standards. For that reason among others, an international entity called AAOIFI was established in 1990. AAOIFI stands for the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions. risk behavior, and find needed services. Founded in March 2012, RAHMA based in the Washington, DC area became a corporation in November of last year. Five members under the age of 30 of diverse backgrounds sit on the board, including a nurse. K a r i m A m i n i s R A H M A’s Vi c e President. He was raised in inner city Baltimore, MD, and attended Towson University. Personally affected by HIV/ AIDS as six of his family members have died from complications from the virus, he hopes that his involvement in RAHMA will help prevent other families from enduring what his has. Other board members are Shahid Haque, Sarah Bounse, and Nabeelah Naeem. RAHMA’s next major event is scheduled in Washington DC’s oldest Islamic center, Masjid Muhammad. In collaboration with Whitman-Walker Health, RAHMA will offer free HIV testing. “Masjid Muhammad will host us and the event is open to everyone,” adds Abdullah. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care. A powerful story of a sister who was raped and contracted the disease is shared on the RAHMA website. “I just started taking medications last year after I was a foot and a few toes into the grave. By Allah’s Mercy and Kindness, it has been working well. My viral load is undetectable, and my T-cell count is about 224. It was at 25 when I started. I was in denial for a very long time,” she writes. Being aware of one’s status is of importance and Muslim countries such as Malaysia and Turkey require couples to get tested for HIV and other sexually transmitted disease before getting a marriage license. “I would [get tested] and tell my future spouse to as well. We learned in Fiqh of Love, a AlMaghrib class that everyone should get tested generally, just in case they have any sort of disease before they get married,’ says S.I, a young student

African Americans are disproportionately affected by HIV. CDC estimates that they accounted for nearly half (44%) of all new infections in 2010, despite making up only 14% of the population.

The stigmatization is so great that only a dozen or so HIV+ folks have reached out to RAHMA. Those that did reach out share that

In the line with Islamic values, RAHMA will not turn anyone away who seeks out services provided regardless of their religious beliefs.” We don’t turn anyone away that is not Muslim,” says Abdullah. Research shows that African Americans do not engage in riskier behavior than members of other racial/ethnic groups. However, there are many social and economic barriers such as poverty, racial discrimination, limited access to health care and housing, and incarceration— that can increase the risk of HIV. “Slammed with the reality we are currently up against, [testing] is a must requirement between intended individuals, specifically in the US (and even more specifically in the DMV),” says R. Muhammad of Maryland. “We are an organization that is trying to reach out to HIV+ Muslims nationwide. Our first step is to start with the DMV area. We plan to host educational workshops in Masjids to help break down the stigma and educate our brothers and sisters. We also have a research team that is preparing statistics on incidence and prevalence rates of HIV infection in our community and will also write up our own articles and journals,” says Abdullah. In the line with Islamic values, RAHMA will not turn anyone away who seeks out services provided regardless of their religious beliefs.” We don’t turn anyone away that is not Muslim,” says Abdullah. There are a number of important issues that affect the Muslim community and need to addressed, specifically screening and outreach since they are more unlikely to seek help. Another service that RAHMA plans is to train outside organizations to work with Muslim patients; increasing culturally

marriage is a major concern for people living with HIV; a lifestyle choice that many take for granted. Most do not want their real names to be revealed, hiding their disease as the stigma is great but do see the need for support. Other needs identified were support for living with a chronic disease; they need support from community- support groups, a safe space where people who share their experience can meet, without being judged and ostracized. Last year on Mothers Day’s, Abdullah walked with former board member Nuzhat Islami in RAHMA’s first event, an AIDS walk. As word about the new organization spreads, RAHMA hopes to have gatherings in other states. The response to the work of RAHMA has been mixed. Many people have been supportive and happy, according to Abdullah. Some people in the local area, however, negate how important it

is to educate about this topic at Islamic centers. “Some are open and ready, while some masajid do not think it is a good idea--because it is taboo--but it is taboo because our communities don’t want to talk about it,” says Abdullah. RAHMA held a successful event for the youth at the McLean masjid about the importance of learning about prevention. “Many youth are already exposed to these things outside the masjid. Our job is to educate them about making good judgements and decisions,” says Abdullah, “and spread awareness of how one can contract it and just as importantly how one doesn’t.” In August, an awareness event with Project REACH is in the works. “We also hope to register a booth at the ISNA convention and [possibly] host a session at ISNA,” says Abdullah, First of December is Worlds AIDS day and RAHMA is hoping to hold its first fundraising event in the DC area. Right now RAHMA is funded by personal donations. As soon as RAHMA receives its 501c3 status, the board will start applying for grants. The team behind RAHMA envisions a one stop shop where people with the disease can see a doctor, get medication, and meet with a case manager. The ultimate goal is a fully functioning facility with nurses that offers direct and indirect services and a research department. In order to have an AIDS free world everyone needs to check their status. To learn more about RAHMA please visit www.haverahma.org.

conducted a survey last year on the needs of seniors. Transportation was one of the identified needs, as many cannot drive anymore. According to the National Center of Senior Transportation, many seniors see the use of a taxicab as a luxury and are reluctant to treat themselves to such an extravagance. A senior’s access can be limited by the impression of many taxi drivers that older adults are not moneymakers and may require assistance that keeps drivers from other fares. These Muslim drivers, eager to earn eternal rewards, answered the city’s dispatcher calls from seniors at no cost to the city, during the last ten days of Ramadan. Initially the city did not have funding for such a program, but impressed with the Ramadan Taxi program and Imam Shareef’s work in the Mayor’s Interfaith Council, the city found the resources to fund the center under the auspice of the DC Office of Aging (DOA). The DOA’s newest nutrition site will offer nutritious Halal meals to area residents. The opening of the Kibar Senior Center will be the first center serving the Muslim community as part of the Office on Aging Senior Service Network. This Halal nutrition center is the first in the nation’s capitol and perhaps the country sponsored by the government in partnership with a masjid says Imam Shareef. The site will be the first to

The site was officially opened in early June by Dr. John Thompson, Executive Director of the District's Office on Aging. Along with Dr. Thompson and key staff, Joseph Resch, the Chief Executive Director of Seabury Resources for the Aging , the District's site contractor for Ward 5 attended the opening, which will provide other supportive services. The imam recognized the work of Ahmad Nurriddin, the brother ‘who set the pace and performed the footwork required for this project’ as well as other volunteers. The program takes place between 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the lower level of Masjid Muhammad in the Multipurpose center. Lunch is served between 12:00 and 1:00. These seniors would normally be home without anyone to socialize with. Now they walk over to the center and enjoy each other’s company as well as the activities organized by the center. Many come from Southeast D.C and Northeast D.C using city transportation, most are at walking distance. The maximum capacity is for 75 seniors. “Our neighborhood Commissioner, Joyce Robinson-Paul has been coming in every single day,” says Imam Talib Shareef, interviewing with the Muslim Link. “She is excited and is bringing people of other faith to the masjid.”

“Sisters are an integral part of the community and, they should have the opportunity to have their questions addressed and to be heard. They should not feel intimidated,” says Shaykh Khan. He plans on holding classes specifically for the women in the community. One of the challenges facing the imam is reaching out to disenfranchised Muslims. Concerning the pockets of community that has been alienated or have stopped coming to masjid the imam says that he would like to meet with them. “This is the house of Allah,” The imam does not believe in divisions based on madhhab (school of thought) differences. “Once you make madhab an issue then you are shutting down Some were hesitant about coming into a masjid. “Our purpose is service but dawah [naturally] occurs. When they interact with Muslims hear the adhan, it changes their thinking,” says Imam Shareef. Some Muslim brothers and sisters bring their parents who are not yet Muslims. “I love the fact that they are getting to see the essence of Prophet Muhammad’s character. Masjid Muhammad urges community members to volunteer, displaying decency and exemplary character,” said Imam Shareef. dialogue,” says Sh. Khan. When asked about other community organizations emerging in the area, he says that he likes the idea of help in providing services that the masjid is not equipped to provide or doesn’t have the expertise to offer. He would like to have a hand and glove approach with community and youth organizations. Tolerance and an open door policy are needed to serve as an imam in a diverse masjid. His fingers laced together to emphasize his point, he says “nothing can replace the masjid ...no parallel service, the masjid has to be the focal point of a [Muslim] community.”

Tooth, said he was "delighted to be able to provide halal and healthy meals" to seniors in DC. Every meal was vetted by a city nutritionist. The city had never had a taste testing for a nutritional center. Masjid Muhammad asked for one so the food met their standards and were granted a taste test. “We really wanted to something for all the people in the city,” says Imam Shareef, “we asked ourselves what we can do for service. Allah doesn't need anything, we are created for the service of his people,” says Imam Shareef. During the month of Ramadan, those who are not fasting will get their free meals during regular hours. Meals for seniors who are fasting will be served during iftar time.

Saudi Government: Postpone Haj If You Can By P.K. Abdul Ghafour

Arab News, June 16, 2013 In an unprecedented move aimed at preventing congestion and stampedes and ensuring safety of the guests of God, Saudi authorities have urged domestic and foreign pilgrims to postpone their Haj plans for this year if possible due to ongoing expansion work at Makkah’s Grand Mosque. The call follows the government’s decision to reduce the number of foreign pilgrims by 20 percent and domestic pilgrims 50 percent this year. Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al-Asheikh has backed the measure, saying it was taken in public interest. In a series of announcements through the Holy Qur’an television channel, which is aired from Makkah, the government advised pilgrims intending to perform Haj and Umrah this year to postpone their plans to reduce congestion at the Grand Mosque. “By making this announcement our government is not preventing anybody from Haj, but asking them to postpone in order to avoid congestion and help first-time Hajis to perform their religious duties without difficulties,” Saeed Al-Qurashi, a member of the Haj & Umrah Committee at Makkah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told Arab News. He said the mataf (the circumambulation area around the Holy Kaaba) could hold now only 39,000 faithful per hour, suggesting an influx of a large number of pilgrims could cause congestion inside the mosque. “Once the mataf expansion is completed, it can accommodate more than 130,000 pilgrims per hour. So, it would be better for our brethren to come for Haj next year or after two years, when they will be able to perform their rituals with

ease,” he explained. Hatem Qadi, deputy Haj minister and spokesman of the ministry, emphasized the need for reducing the number of foreign and domestic pilgrims this year. “The period for cutting the number of pilgrims will not exceed two years,” he said. The ongoing expansion work

at the two holy mosques are aimed at accommodating more pilgrims in the coming years, he pointed out. Qadi cited the grand mufti’s statement on the issue saying the government took the decision because it was essential. “The ongoing expansion is for the benefit of pilgrims,” the mufti said.

Mohammed Noor Rahman Sheikh, Indian consul for Haj, said his country would send more than 170,000 pilgrims this year. “We have been informed about the government’s plan to cut the number of foreign pilgrims by 20 percent,” he told Arab News.

PRISM Just Part of Much Larger, Scarier Government Surveillance Program By Stephen Braun, Anne Flaherty, Jack Gillum, And Matt Apuzo Associated Press, June 15, 2013

which required less time from the companies and provided the government data in a more standard format.

WASHINGTON (AP) — In the months and early years after 9/11, FBI agents began showing up at Microsoft Corp. more frequently than before, armed with court orders demanding information on customers.

The revelation of Prism this month by the Washington Post and Guardian newspapers has touched off the latest round in a decade-long debate over what limits to impose on government eavesdropping, which the Obama administration says is essential to keep

recent attention, the program actually is a relatively small part of a much more expansive and intrusive eavesdropping effort. Americans who disapprove of the government reading their emails have more to worry about from a different and larger NSA effort that snatches data as it passes through the fiber optic cables that make up the Internet's backbone.

Around the world, government spies and eavesdroppers were tracking the email and Internet addresses used by suspected terrorists. Often, those trails led to the world's largest software company and, at the time, largest email provider.

Often there was no easy way to tell if the information belonged to foreigners or Americans. So much data was changing hands that one former Microsoft employee recalls that the engineers were anxious about whether the company should cooperate.

This frenetic, manual process was the forerunner to Prism, the recently revealed highly classified National Security Agency program that seizes records from Internet companies. As laws changed and technology improved, the government and industry moved toward a streamlined, electronic process,

....

The fact that it is productive is not surprising; documents show it is one of the major sources for what ends up in the president's daily briefing. Prism makes sense of the cacophony of the Internet's raw feed. It provides the government with names, addresses, conversation histories and entire archives of email inboxes. Many of the people interviewed for this report insisted on anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss a classified, continuing effort. But those interviews, along with public statements and the few public documents available, show there are two vital components to Prism's success.

The agents wanted email archives, account information, practically everything, and quickly. Engineers compiled the data, sometimes by hand, and delivered it to the government.

Inside Microsoft, some called it "Hoovering" — not after the vacuum cleaner, but after J. Edgar Hoover, the first FBI director, who gathered dirt on countless Americans.

dence, Prism appears to do what its name suggests. Like a triangular piece of glass, Prism takes large beams of data and helps the government find discrete, manageable strands of information.

The first is how the government works closely with the companies that keep people perpetually connected to each other and the world. That story line has attracted the most attention so far.

Under construction: A new million square-foot, $2 billion data mining complex in Bluffdale, Utah where the NSA will analyze voice and Internet data it captures from around the planet, including daily communication between American citizens. Photo from Internet. the nation safe. But interviews with more than a dozen current and former government and technology officials and outside experts show that, while Prism has attracted the

That program, which has been known for years, copies Internet traffic as it enters and leaves the United States, then routes it to the NSA for analysis. Whether by clever choice or coinci-

The second and far murkier one is how Prism fits into a larger U.S. wiretapping program in place for years. ___ Deep in the oceans, hundreds of cables carry much of the world's phone and Internet traffic. Since at least the early 1970s, the NSA has been tapping foreign cables. It doesn't need permission. That's its job. But Internet data doesn't care about borders. Send an email from Pakistan to Afghanistan and it might pass through a mail server in the United States, the

June 21st - July 11th 2013 same computer that handles messages to and from Americans. The NSA is prohibited from spying on Americans or anyone inside the United States. That's the FBI's job and it requires a warrant. Despite that prohibition, shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks, President George W. Bush secretly authorized the NSA to plug into the fiber optic cables that enter and leave the United States, knowing it would give the government unprecedented, warrantless access to Americans' private conversations. Tapping into those cables allows the NSA access to monitor emails, telephone calls, video chats, websites, bank transactions and more. It takes powerful computers to decrypt, store and analyze all this information, but the information is all there, zipping by at the speed of light. "You have to assume everything is being collected," said Bruce Schneier, who has been studying and writing about cryptography and computer security for two decades.

ADVERTISEMENT | 31 the government was sweeping up millions of emails and listening to phone calls of people accused of no wrongdoing. The Bush administration called it the "Terrorist Surveillance Program" and said it was keeping the United States safe. "This program has produced intelligence for us that has been very valuable in the global war on terror, both in terms of saving lives and breaking up plots directed at the United States," Vice President Dick Cheney said at the time. The government has said it minimizes all conversations and emails involving Americans. Exactly what that means remains classified. But former U.S. officials familiar with the process say it allows the government to keep the information as long as it is labeled as belonging to an American and stored in a special, restricted part of a computer. That means Americans' personal emails can live in government computers, but

"I'm much more frightened and concerned about real-time monitoring on the Internet backbone ... I cannot think of anything, outside of a face-toface conversation, that they could not have access to." The New York Times disclosed the existence of this effort in 2005. In 2006, former AT&T technician Mark Klein revealed that the company had allowed the NSA to install a computer at its San Francisco switching center, a spot where fiber optic cables enter the U.S. What followed was the most significant debate over domestic surveillance since the 1975 Church Committee, a special Senate committee led by Sen. Frank Church, D-Idaho, reined in the CIA and FBI for spying on Americans. Unlike the recent debate over Prism, however, there were no visual aids, no easy-to-follow charts explaining that

analysts can't access, read or listen to them unless the emails become relevant to a national security investigation. The government doesn't automatically delete the data, officials said, because an email or phone conversation that seems innocuous today might be significant a year from now. What's unclear to the public is how long the government keeps the data. That is significant because the U.S. someday will have a new enemy. Two decades from now, the government could have a trove of American emails and phone records it can tap to investigate whatever Congress declares a threat to national security.

Prism makes sense of the cacophony of the Internet's raw feed. It provides the government with names, addresses, conversation histories and entire archives of email inboxes. The Bush administration shut down its warrantless wiretapping program in 2007 but endorsed a new law, the Protect America Act, which allowed the wiretapping to continue with changes: The NSA generally would have to explain its techniques and targets to a secret court in Washington, but individual warrants would not be required. Congress approved it, with Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., in the midst of a campaign for president, voting against it. "This administration also puts forward a false choice between the liberties we cherish and the security we provide," Obama said in a speech two days before that vote. "I will provide our intelligence and law enforcement agencies with the tools they need to track and take out the terrorists without undermining our Constitution and our freedom." ___ When the Protect America Act made warrantless wiretapping legal, lawyers and executives at major technology companies knew what was about to happen. One expert in national security law, who is directly familiar with how Internet companies dealt with the government during that period, recalls conversations in which technology officials worried aloud that the government would trample on Americans' constitutional right against unlawful searches, and that the companies would be called on to help.

to take information without warrants. Though the companies didn't know it, the passage of the Protect America Act gave birth to a top-secret NSA program, officially called US-98XN. It was known as Prism. Though many details are still unknown, it worked like this: Every year, the attorney general and the director of national intelligence spell out in a classified document how the government plans to gather intelligence on foreigners overseas. By law, the certification can be broad. The government isn't required to identify specific targets or places. A federal judge, in a secret order, approves the plan. With that, the government can issue "directives" to Internet companies to turn over information. While the court provides the government with broad authority to seize records, the directives themselves typically are specific, said one former associate general counsel at a major Internet company. They identify a specific target or groups of targets. Other company officials recall similar experiences. All adamantly denied turning over the kind of broad swaths of data that many people believed when the Prism documents were first released.

The logistics were about to get daunting, too.

"We only ever comply with orders for requests about specific accounts or identifiers," Microsoft said in a statement.

For years, the companies had been handling requests from the FBI. Now Congress had given the NSA the authority

32 | CONTINUED the second half of last year. The social media company said fewer than 19,000 users were targeted. How many of those were related to national security is unclear, and likely classified. The numbers suggest each request typically related to one or two people, not a vast range of users. Tech company officials were unaware there was a program named Prism. Even former law enforcement and counterterrorism officials who were on the job when the program went live and were aware of its capabilities said this past week that they didn't know what it was called. What the NSA called Prism, the companies knew as a streamlined system that automated and simplified the "Hoovering" from years earlier, the former assistant general counsel said. The companies, he said, wanted to reduce their workload. The government wanted the data in a structured, consistent format that was easy to search.

Google, for instance, says it makes secure file transfers. Others use contractors or have set up stand-alone systems. Some have set up user interfaces making it easier for the government, according to a security expert familiar with the process. Every company involved denied the most sensational assertion in the Prism documents: that the NSA pulled data "directly from the servers" of Microsoft, Yahoo, Google, Facebook, AOL and more. Technology experts and a former government official say that phrasing, taken from a PowerPoint slide describing the program, was likely meant to differentiate Prism's neatly organized, companyprovided data from the unstructured information snatched out of the Internet's major pipelines. In a slide made public by the newspapers, NSA analysts were encouraged to use data coming from both Prism and from the fiber-optic cables.

Any company in the communications business can expect a visit, said Mike Janke, CEO of Silent Circle, a company that advertises software for secure, encrypted conversations. The government is eager to find easy ways around security.

Prism, as its name suggests, helps narrow and focus the stream. If eavesdroppers spot a suspicious email among the torrent of data pouring into the United States, analysts can use information from Internet companies to pinpoint the user.

"They do this every two to three years," said Janke, who said government agents have approached his company but left empty-handed because his computer servers store little information. "They ask for the moon."

With Prism, the government gets a user's entire email inbox. Every email, including contacts with American citizens, becomes government property.

That often creates tension between the government and a technology industry with a reputation for having a civil libertarian bent. Companies occasionally argue to limit what the government takes. Yahoo even went to court and lost in a classified ruling in 2008, The New York Times reported Friday. "The notion that Yahoo gives any federal agency vast or unfettered access to our users' records is categorically false," Ron Bell, the company's general counsel, said recently. Under Prism, the delivery process varied by company.

....

Once the NSA has an inbox, it can search its huge archives for information about everyone with whom the target communicated. All those people can be investigated, too. That's one example of how emails belonging to Americans can become swept up in the hunt. In that way, Prism helps justify specific, potentially personal searches. But it's the broader operation on the Internet fiber optics cables that actually captures the data, experts agree. "I'm much more frightened and concerned about real-time monitoring on the Internet backbone," said Wolf Ruzicka, CEO of EastBanc Technologies, a

Washington software company. "I cannot think of anything, outside of a faceto-face conversation, that they could not have access to."

"You can't have 100 percent security and also then have 100 percent privacy and zero inconvenience," the president said.

One unanswered question, according to a former technology executive at one of the companies involved, is whether the government can use the data from Prism to work backward.

Obama's administration, echoing his predecessor's, credited the surveillance with disrupting several terrorist attacks. Leading figures from the Bush administration who endured criticism during Obama's candidacy have applauded the president for keeping the surveillance intact.

For example, not every company archives instant message conversations, chat room exchanges or videoconferences. But if Prism provided general details, known as metadata, about when a user began chatting, could the government "rewind" its copy of the global Internet stream, find the conversation and replay it in full? That would take enormous computing, storage and code-breaking power. It's possible the NSA could use supercomputers to decrypt some transmissions, but it's unlikely it would have the ability to do that in volume. In other words, it would help to know what messages to zero in on. Whether the government has that power and whether it uses Prism this way remains a closely guarded secret. ___ A few months after Obama took office in 2009, the surveillance debate reignited in Congress because the NSA had crossed the line. Eavesdroppers, it turned out, had been using their warrantless wiretap authority to intercept far more emails and phone calls of Americans than they were supposed to. Obama, no longer opposed to the wiretapping, made unspecified changes to the process. The government said the problems were fixed. "I came in with a healthy skepticism about these programs," Obama explained recently. "My team evaluated them. We scrubbed them thoroughly. We actually expanded some of the oversight, increased some of the safeguards." Years after decrying Bush for it, Obama said Americans did have to make tough choices in the name of safety.

Jason Weinstein, who recently left the Justice Department as head of its cybercrime and intellectual property section, said it's no surprise Obama continued the eavesdropping. "You can't expect a president to not use a legal tool that Congress has given him to protect the country," he said. "So, Congress has given him the tool. The president's using it. And the courts are saying 'The way you're using it is OK.' That's checks and balances at work." Schneier, the author and security expert, said it doesn't really matter how Prism works, technically. Just assume the government collects everything, he said. He said it doesn't matter what the government and the companies say, either. It's spycraft, after all. "Everyone is playing word games," he said. "No one is telling the truth." Iowa Town Named for Muslim Hero Extols Tolerance By Samuel G. Freedman

Davis had read of Abd el-Kader’s fight against the French for Algerian independence, which was covered by American newspapers sympathetic to the revolt against colonial rule. So Davis named his new town for the emir.

New York Times, May 3, 2013

ELKADER, Iowa — Amid an expanse of undulating farmland, deep in the steep valley carved by the Turkey River, the town of Elkader sits most of the year in remote obscurity. Population 1,200 and gradually shrinking, it is the seat of a county without a single traffic light. Improbably enough, this community settled by Germans and Scandinavians, its religious life built around Catholic and Lutheran churches, bears the name of a Muslim hero. Abd el-Kader was renowned in the 19th century for leading Algeria’s fight for independence and protecting non-Muslims from persecution. Even Abraham Lincoln extolled him. This weekend, for the fifth year in a row, Elkader will welcome a delegation of Arab dignitaries to celebrate this rare lifeline of tolerance, spanning continents and centuries. Coming less than three weeks after the Boston M a r a t h o n b o m b i n g s , w h i ch t h e authorities say were committed by two Muslim brothers, the Abdelkader Education Project’s forum stands more than ever for an affirming encounter between the United States and Islam. “Our audience is the people who are compassionate already,” said Kathy Garms, 63, a retired human-resources administrator who is the driving force in the Abdelkader project. “But there are so many people who are ignorant or scared or even hateful. We just hope that once they get across the starting line, they will listen.” Abdallah Baali, Algeria’s ambassador to the United States and an annual participant in the forum, put its impact in global terms. “In our increasingly tormented world,” the ambassador wrote in an e-mail, “Abd el-Kader — a true world hero — is ‘talking’ today to a much broader audience about our shared values and on how humanity could and can prevail over all differences and prejudices.” The saga began in 1845, when a land

developer, Timothy Davis, scouted a site along the Turkey River for a flour mill and settlement. Davis had read of Abd el-Kader’s fight against the French for Algerian independence, which was covered by American newspapers sympathetic to the revolt against colonial rule. So Davis named his new town for the emir. Over the decades, the profundity of Elkader’s provenance gave way to a kind of exotica — a local college called its student newspaper The Arab Chieftain — and ultimately was all but forgotten. Then, in the mid-1980s, an Algerian liaison at the American Embassy there chanced upon the fact that a town in Iowa had been named for Kader. And that liaison, Benaoumer Zergaoui, hailed from Kader’s birthplace, Mascara. Through the efforts of Mr. Zergaoui and Elkader’s mayor at the time, Edward W. Olson, Mascara and Elkader established a sister-city relationship in 1984. That endeavor died out in the early 1990s, however, as Algeria descended into a dozen years of civil war between the government and Islamist militants. By the time stability had returned to Algeria, Elkader and the rest of America was living in the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Eventually, Algeria’s government reached out to Elkader’s new mayor in 2008. He turned down the opportunity

to visit, but the invitation found its way to Kathy Garms, a volunteer in the local history museum. An accidental diplomat, Ms. Garms had been born and reared in Elkader, the daughter of a logger and a secretary. As a young woman, her world extended no wider than San Angelo, Tex., where she had represented Iowa in the Miss Wool beauty pageant. In middle age by this time, and having seen a bit of the world as a military wife, Ms. Garms seized upon the Algerian offer. With her husband, she traveled there to meet with government leaders, visit Kader’s grave, and attend a conference run by a humanitarian foundation. Two weeks after she returned to Iowa, the Turkey River flooded, destroying about 30 homes and causing $8 million in property damage. Ms. Garms picked up her phone one day to field an inquiry from the Algerian government about how to wire-transfer some money for disaster relief. A couple of hundred dollars, she figured, how sweet. It turned out to be $150,000. Serendipity made its next appearance in November 2008 in the form of John W. Kiser, a Virginia author. He had just published a biography of Kader, “Commander of the Faithful,” and wanted to hold a book-launch event in the namesake town. Between them, Ms. Garms and Mr. Kiser brainstormed the idea of starting an essay contest for local high school students and holding a forum to renew interest in Kader. “Our point,” Mr. Kiser said in a recent interview, “is to inject into

the educational bloodstream another view of Islam. We need to balance the narratives that are constantly coming through the media. Fear and ignorance are a deadly combination.” By now, as the forum prepares for its fifth year, Elkader displays historical artifacts about Algeria and Kader in both City Hall and the history museum. A local restaurant serves Algerian cuisine. Matched sets of poles with the word for peace written in English, French, and Arabic, stand in Elkader and Mascara. This weekend’s visitors will include a prominent Egyptian Islamic artist, Ahmed Moustafa, and a film crew from Al Jazeera. Everyone will dine on Iowa beef at Fennellys’ Irish Pub. Not that everything has been easy. One of Kader’s descendants, who was supposed to come from Dubai for the forum, canceled his trip after the Boston bombing. Bob Spielbauer, an Elkader native who won the essay contest in 2011, recently heard his college classmates trotting out the Muslimterrorist stereotype. “It felt personal,” he said. “I felt like they were attacking me. Because the project helped open my eyes. It helped give me a positive opinion of Muslims. It was like filling in a blank.” In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. No Way! Cisse Will Refuse To Wear Newcastle Shirt With Wonga Sponsorship By GRAEME YORKE, Daily Mail UK, June 8, 2013 The controversy surrounding Newcastle’s new shirt sponsor has taken a new twist with star striker set to refuse to wear the kit bearing Wonga.com. The Senegalese striker is a practicing Muslim and has protested to club officials on religious and ethical grounds about the pay-day loan company's deal. Under Sharia law, Muslims must not benefit from either lending money or receiving money from another person - meaning that interest is prohibited. Interest is not paid on Islamic bank accounts or added to mortgages. Cisse's team-mates Cheick Tiote and Hatem Ben Arfa, who are also practicing Muslims, may also refuse to wear the strip. Newcastle are yet to work out a

compromise with the player, report The Mirror, though history points to a solution as they may follow the stance of former Tottenham and West Ham striker Freddie Kanoute. The Malian refused to wear the logo of gambling website 888.com on his Seville shirt some years ago. Kanoute instead wore an an unbranded top in Spain, although he agreed to wear the logo during training. Eventually he agreed to wear the shirt in exchange for being excused from any of the promotional duties the sponsorship entailed. Wonga, whose four-year deal takes over from Virgin Money at the start of next season, has already drawn fierce

criticism from other quarters for the huge interest charged on 30-day loans. Should a Newcastle fan accept a loan to buy a £50 club shirt, they would have to repay £71.92 after a month with a rate equivalent to 4,212 per cent per year.

A statement on the club’s official website confirmed the agreement was no longer, with chairman Phil Gartside insisting: ‘We don’t want our commercial relationships to come between us and our community.’

Earlier this week Bolton reversed their decision to enter into a sponsorship deal with QuickQuid after an agreement was met with opposition from fans.

Saudi Prince Spends $19-million On Three-Day Disneyland Party To Celebrate Graduation The Daily Telegraph, June 4, 2013 A Saudi prince spent nearly $19-million on a private three-day extravaganza at Disneyland near Paris to celebrate his degree, the group that runs the theme park said Monday. Prince Fahd al-Saud booked entire areas of the park over May 22 to 24 for his 60 guests, who included friends, as well as diehard Disney fans and bloggers. The Paris event was the finale of a world tour paid for by the prince and called

“This is the first time there has been such a grandiose, private world tour,” said Julien Guedon, the editor of Disney Gazette, whose correspondent was on the Paris guest list.

According to regional newspaper Ouest France, the prince even had a hand in designing the costumes and the scenarios – all specially shipped in for the event, along with 80 dancers.

“The prince had fun. He was there all along, but we are not allowed to speak about him, that was the order,” he told The Daily Telegraph.

Only true Disney aficionados could have kept up with the programme, as guests were roused at 6am to be taken down the park’s Main Street, specially transformed into a typical Parisian street, and the fun ended at 2am every night. “The prince had the park to himself early morning and after the official closing time at 11pm,” said Mr. Guedon. The rest of the time, it was open to normal visitors, invited to meet some of the characters he had shipped in.

A Relief Worker’s Take: On the Ground After the Oklahoma Tornado The Muslim Link interviewed Murat Kose, East Coast Program Director for Zakat Foundation of America, about the group’s efforts in Oklahoma after category EF5 tornadoes -- the most destructive category -- struck the town of Moore on May 20, 2013, killing 24 people and destroying thousands of homes. TML:What was your first response to the tornados in Oklahoma?

gone. The masjid is located south west of the city. It took almost half an hour to get there. Several roads were blocked, so I got out of the van and walked around to meet the people. People were under shock. there were lots of church reliefs donating relief items. I surveyed the area talking to people who had lost their home, to assess their needs. Several people broke down; one told me he had lost

30 years of work in 15 minutes. Many of them were looking for their valuables from the tornado, pictures etc. It was heartbreaking. Their neighbors items were mixed up with their own. These people were strong, not crying but you could see the depression in their faces. TML: How did you introduce yourself?

ZF: I had a jam packed weekend planned. We were heading to ICNA convention as well as two other programs. As soon as I heard the news of the tornado I arranged for someone else to attend the ICNA convention on the zakat foundation’s behalf. And I headed directly to Oklahoma. I was in touch with the muslim community especially with the Islamic Society of greater Oklahoma City, which is the largest masjid in OK. I was also in touch with Br. Adam of CAIR.They had already started to announced relief work. Water diapers, hygiene items. When I had reached OK they were two big rooms with items donated by the community.

TML: What were your impressions after the disaster? ZF: One of the great things I saw was that the people appreciated the help from the government. but they were not greedy. They said they were fine and told us to go to other neighborhoods who needed help. Another moment of interfaith cooperation occurred when I visited a Muslim brother, Saad Sulaiman, whose home was destroyed by the tornado that touched down on May 20. A Mormon group was cleaning up the wreckage of his house, and offered to collaborate with ZF volunteers whenever possible. The feeling of unity was strengthened when I shared my appreciation for help that Mormons had given with cleanup at an Atlantic City mosque after Hurricane Sandy.

Once ZF reaches any disaster zone, we always do a survey. The tornado had hit an area about 2 miles in width and length, almost rectangular in shape. About 12,000 homes were affected and 2400 homes were totally destroyed. The guy at the rental car counter directed me to a neighborhood that needed food and had no electricity. I visited many shelters including the Red Cross. learning from our experience in Hurricane Sandy and Alabama. We realized some places needed a lot of help or other none; logistics plays a big role. Several residential and commercial buildings in south east Moore were

ZF: For different people I would tell them different things. Some I tell them that I am from the Zakat foundation, and others I would tell them I was apart of a Muslim foundation. Some asked me about my accent I would tell them I was from Turkey, for others I would let them know I was from the East Coast. Some would ask me what does Zakat mean? Others asked me if there were Muslims in OK.

One main characteristic I have seen was everyone was in a good mood and with a very positive attitude. It was nice to see people smiling after having such a disaster and losing everything. TML: How does ZF work with other organizations?

as every situation is different. While at a shelter I was informed that they needed gloves, hair combs and other hygiene items. You have to realize that these people had lost everything. I went out to buy those items. Another area needed tea and coffee as they had plenty of water but hadn’t had a cup of tea for a few days. More importantly because of shock people don't know what to do. When President Obama declared a state of emergency, many people don't realize that they have to apply to FEMA. I would ask several people if they had applied. Most asked how do we apply and I showed them. For example, I found a senior couple wandering around a parking lot, lost. I asked them can I help you they were about 70 years old and they were looking for their rental car. This kind of help is the kind of help we need to train volunteers for. This is the easiest and most effective kind of help. I located their car, help them load their relief

....

items and took them to the FEMA station to help them apply. In the evening, I had a meeting at the masjid, alongside ICNA Relief to give a small presentation. The next day we loaded the truck and took it to the relief center. At this point you mostly need labor, to load and unload the relief items and to help with cleanup. ZF volunteers worked alongside members of a veterans group, Team Rubicon, at a Red Cross distribution center, to unload the truckloads of donated water, canned food, diapers, personal care items and other necessities that had been collected at the Islamic Society of Greater Oklahoma City. Brothers from St Louis helped us clean some homes, then we were directed to a horse farm where 100 horses were killed. It was not a regular farm; it was one of those farms that entertained kids with a maze and pumpkin patch. Since we were a small group we joined with other

groups, we sorted plastic, wood, metal and other items. This is called short term help because we try to minimize spending by directing people to FEMA and insurance companies and try to help in their unmet needs. Then there is long term help, ie. Hurricane Sandy occurred in November, but even after six months we still get requests for help. TML: What are you recommendations to Muslim volunteers and masajids? Helping by donating a box of bottled water is not enough; you are not done with your duty. This is the first thing, we help because it is our duty, but this is not a time to be proselytizing. Just say I am sorry for your loss, people need moral support. Please don’t say this is a punishment from God. If they ask who you are you can tell them that you are Muslim. This is interfaith in action. It is more

powerful than interfaith meetings. Muslims should be visible in the public eye, especially sisters in hijab. Imagine if 100 people went it would have a ripple effect. Imagine if 10 imams went. Flying in from other places during a disaster to gain experience is great, however I would like to have trainings at every masajid on emergencies. Every Muslim should be ready to help in case of disaster in their locality. Masajid administrations should practice emergency fire and earthquake drills with the congregation, at least once especially before Ramadan. Zakat Foundation can help train and make a emergency plan. The National Emergency Agency can help with this, they don’t have to spend any masjid money.

3 Tips On Getting Ready for Ramadan from Noman Ali Khan Tip #1: Make Time to Recite Qur'an Starting Now When somebody really wants to prepare for Ramadan very well, the first basic piece of advice I would give you – some of you are mothers, some of you are students, some of you are employees, and you have different kinds of schedules and obligations, so you have to figure out this piece of advice for yourself – is make time to recite the Qur'an every day. Put everything else down. I'm not talking just about the Qur'an you have memorized. I'm talking about picking a time in the day, preferably after one of the prayers like fajr or 'isha'. This is not after Ramadan starts but from now. Sit with the book of Allāh and recite it. If you can't handle a lot, then do at least a couple of pages. You will notice that you get lazy very quickly. You will recite a little bit and then start yawning or feeling like you have to do something else. You are actively doing it yourself and have to put an effort into reciting the Qur'an. This is really where your personal litmus test is going to come into play. How much time do you really enjoy spending with this book? If you don't get into the habit of reciting it regularly, then the next step I'm trying to advise you of, which is memorizing it, will never even start. The first thing is getting into the habit of reciting the Qur'an every day. This as a basic, practical starting point in your own personal journey with the Qur'an. It is something that the scholars among us and speakers among us and those who don't know much at all about Arabic or Qur'an

or tafsir are in the same boat when it comes to this. This is something we equally have to give importance to. Just because I've been studying or

are doing. You will see the benefits of it. That is the other thing is that Ramadan

That is the beauty of this book. We are never past it. We can't just say, “Oh, I already recited that page. Oh, I already recited this sūrah.” It doesn't work like that. trying to study the Qur'an for the last decade doesn't mean that I'm exempt from having to recite the Qur'an every single day. It is something I need as much as you need and even my teachers need. It is not something that anybody will graduate beyond. That is the beauty of this book. We are never past it. We can't just say, “Oh, I already recited that page. Oh, I already recited this sūrah.” It doesn't work like that.

comes and we go overboard. There's a person who doesn't even pray, or if they pray, maybe they pray at home. In Ramadan, for 30 straight days they come to the masjid and they are there for 8 or 20 taraweeh, exhausting themselves. Halfway into it, they cannot wait for Ramadan to be over so they can go back to normal again. This is unhealthy, actually. I'm not saying you shouldn't make 20 tarawih or 8 tarawih, please go ahead! But get into good habits that

The day you make it to the masjid to pray fajr and 'ishā', you are going to feel different. You are going to be at a peace you haven't enjoyed before. Ramadan is a great opportunity for instilling and reinforcing those good habits, in sha 'Allāh.

you can bring to life before Ramadan starts and you can keep alive after Ramadan is over.

My personal recommended time is after fajr. It is a particularly peaceful time and there is an enjoyment in the Qur'an and barakah in it. You will enjoy the rest of your day. You will feel the effects of the blessings at work, in school, and in whatever you

When Ramadan starts, recite a whole juz' every day or two juz' a day if you can. If you can't handle that after Ramadan is done, then start with something far more manageable. What is manageable and sustainable is far better for you. “The best

of deeds are the ones that are the most constant.” The most constant deeds are the ones that are the most manageable. They are the ones you wouldn't have to go out of your way to maintain. We often don't realize the spiritual benefits of praying in the masjid, reciting the Qur'an, and active acts of worship – extra prayers, nawāfil. You will know the difference between a prayer that is just a hit and run – you literally bang your head on the floor a couple of times and made sajdah and got it out of the way – or you took your time and prayed peacefully. You will notice a difference not only in the prayer but how you feel that day after the prayer. The day you make it to the masjid to pray fajr and 'ishā', you are going to feel different. You are going to be at a peace you haven't enjoyed before. From your past experience, you can already testify to those differences. It does make a difference. These are some of the joys of Islam. One of the joys of our īmān is that we get to taste its fruits even in this life. You don't have to be an advanced scholar or zāhid to enjoy these things. Even if you are not in the habit of regularly praying in the masjid or reciting a lot of Qur'an, if you get started now, you will start tasting the sweetness of it right away. It is not something you are going to have to wait for. Tip #2: A Golden Opportunity Da'wah The second bit of advice that I want to share with you about the month of >> TIPS Pg 38

Ramadan – again, keeping in mind there are all kinds of readers and you have different family and social situations that I can't even imagine, but I do want to make an educated guess that a lot of you belong to families where there are significant family members that aren't interested in religion or aren't “religious” and don't are for learning the religion more or learning Islam more or worshipping more. Even those kinds of members of the family when it comes to Ramadan turn towards the dīn a little more than usual. The most they will become religious is in this month. I see that as a golden opportunity. Usually what happens in the khutbah is that in the Eid khutbah or the last khutbah of Ramadan, the khatib is angry at the crowd and says, “Don't just come here every Ramadan and then just disappear. Come here every single night of the prayer. I only see you at the Eid prayer.” Instead of using that as an opportunity to vent your frustrations, it is an opportunity

....

Sun Mon

to invite people as guests. These people who don't normally come have come. The fact that the even show up is a favor. It is not something we should complain about. We should look at it the other way. These are people who otherwise have little or nothing to do with the faith. They are barely holding onto the faith. Take it as an opportunity to invite them. In your family, if you have a hard time bringing up dīn or a religious conversation – maybe the beauty or value or prayer, or maybe something you recited from the Qur'an or you heard something explained about the Qur'an that you found particularly beautiful – Ramadan is a good opportunity when you go over for iftar at your cousin's house and get invited to a friend's house or you invite them to your house. When you normally never get a healthy opportunity, now you get an opportunity to talk about the religion. You have a disarmed and non-confrontational opportunity to speak to your friends and family in a way that is not going to create an argument. You don't want to have an argument in the days of Ramadan.

Don't fall into those debates, and don't allow those debates to become dominant in your conversation with others. Ramadan is about getting closer to Allāh and maybe doing your part in helping somebody else get closer to Allāh. In Ramadan, you will get an opportunity to talk to folks that you don't normally see the rest of the year. You don't normally get to talk to them about the religion the rest of the year. Those kinds of people have all kinds of interesting and weird opinions about Islam. They are members of your family – it could be your uncle, cousin, grandfather. When you do talk about the din, they will bring up tangents and weird ideas of theirs, and then they will ask you your opinion about them. One of your relatives may start criticizing ahadith saying it is all made up, or someone else may say the Qur'an talks about alcohol but it is not the same as beer, so it's okay. You will be sitting there thinking, “What are you talking about?! Why are you talking like this?” It will make you upset because

obviously these are some basic things in the religion and these people are bringing them up almost as a joke, or they are bringing up really absurd and ridiculous understandings of the religion that can boil your blood. I'm particularly talking to the youth that feel like they have to defend the faith at any cost, even if it means severing family ties. This is the point where you have to put the brakes on your tongue and hold yourself back and allow the conversation to be steered back in a good direction. “I just wanted to talk about getting closer to Allāh. I just wanted to talk about how great the recitation of Qur'an was the other night.” Change the subject. Don't go into debates! Don't go into religious arguments. This is not the month to do it. It is not the time to do it. Everyone should walk away with a good taste in their mouth after a conversation about dīn in this month. Yes, those issues should be hashed out and discussed, but find another >> TIPS II Pg 41

time to do them. Shaytan is out of the picture right now. These people are ripe for da'wah, and that will entirely depend on your mannerism and your patience and courtesy with them in trying to deliver that message. The sisters listening right now will have to do that with their husbands who are averse to the religion. There are some husbands whose wives don't really like anything to do with Islam. They think that you have become too religious. This will be the opportunity to soften those hearts. There may be your parents who think that you have become too religious and are upset with you and criticize you all the time. This will

be a chance for you to not respond to those things impulsively and become reactionary but rather to become very patient and calm in your reaction to them. Keep the atmosphere positive and good.

Another bit of advice that is tied to this is with friends. All of us have friends who are not very religious. They may be old friends from college or high school. You keep in touch, but maybe you talk about sports or a movie that just came about. You don't talk about dīn. This is the month to try to invite one of your friends to come over for iftar and go to the masjid and pray. Hang out with them. Just go for 'ishā' and bring them back. You don't have to preach a word. Just try to bring them into that environment. Let Allāh do the rest. Being in a masjid after so long will do something to their hearts. It happens! You and I are not in charge of changing

people's hearts, but we can certainly try to bring them to a good, positive environment. If there is goodness in them, and I'm sure there is, it will flourish. Allah will allow it to flourish. This is the time to do that. Mend family ties and help friends come to better company, and for you and me to memorize more Qur'an at the end of this month than we knew going in. We should have recited more Qur'an than we had coming in.

of this Ramadan.

I really hope that you and I do that and we don't get lazy this Ramadan. The worst thing you can do is that Ramadan came to an end and you look back and you say, “Man, another Ramadan went and I didn't fully take advantage of it. I ran out of steam too early.” You don't want that to happen to you this Ramadan. inshā'Allāh we will get ourselves in gear ahead of time.

I'm very optimistic about this Ramadan. I think it is going to be a beautiful month for all Muslims, especially for us here in the US in sha'Allāh.

Tip #3: Guard the Sunnah Prayers My parting advice is take care of your sunnah prayers. Pray the sunan before the fard prayers. Pray the sunan after the fard prayers. Pray the sunan in the masjid or come home and pray them. Take care of them! This is a huge part of reaping the spiritual benefits of 'ibādah. It will get rid of laziness from you. You will become active in doing worship. Ramadan is a time of extra worship. If you are even barely making the energy to do the fard (obligatory) prayers, then in Ramadan, you will run out of steam very quickly. You will not have the energy to do much. It is going to be an opportunity wasted. Take advantage of having a little bit more 'ibādah than usual from now on. Make sure to pray the two rak'ahs after maghrib. Make sure you pray your sunnah after thuhr. Finish the sunnah and nawāfil after 'ishā'. Make sure you take care of those extra acts of worship. Sit and make du‘ā’ by yourself. Put yourself in that situation so you are trained to really take advantage

I pray that you and I are able to learn a lot about the Qur'an and memorize and recite. I pray that all of us are able to worship Allāh in a way that we haven't done before or have gotten too lazy to do and that we don't compare ourselves to the person praying next to us. We should at least compare ourselves to own selves from yesterday to today. We should be a better Muslim today than yesterday.

I want to extend my salams to all of you and your families and make du‘ā’ that their fasting and worship is all accepted by Allāh and that they make the most of it. Ramadan is going to be late nights all across the country. 'Isha' is going to be late, which means taraweeh is going to be late after that, which means guys, don't hang out after prayer. Go to sleep! It is going to ruin your fajr. What is the point of praying 20 tarawih and you can't even wake up for fajr? It is an exercise in futility. Make your worship, but make sure you have a healthy sleep schedule. Make sure you don't overdo it so that you can stay on course and be productive in sha 'Allāh throughout the entire month. These are a few good tips of advice that I wanted to remind myself of and remind all of you of in getting ready for the beautiful month of Ramadan. May Allah make this a month we are closer to the Qur'an than we have ever been. May Allah help you and I understand this book, enjoy this book, love this book, memorize this book and act on this book as it deserves to be acted on.
