Community News Running Muslim: The Other Boston Story By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff Reporter On April 15, 2013, seventeen thousand runners had already crossed the finish line when two explosions left three people dead and over 200 injured at the Boston Marathon, an iconic international sports event. The suspects - one killed and one captured - are Muslims. There are many important stories that will come out from this tragic crime. A spotlight once again shines on Islam's relationship to the suspected terrorists. But on story which must also be told is Islam's relationships to others involved runners, volunteers, and first responders. The Muslim community in Boston was quick to respond to the tragedy in their city. Imam Suhaib Webb, a prominent
religious leader in Boston, led efforts by opening up his home to the runners. The Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center (ISBCC) volunteered the services of around 40 doctors from its congregation, and also hosted a vigil for the victims on Friday. "Cling to the rugged rope of positivity. Knowing that nothing happens except God's grace blinds the murk of evil. Do not feel sorry for yourself. Face this with faith and contribute to the good sprouting from the dark soil. This is not a time for helplessness. It is a time to build," Imam Suhaib Webb advised Bostonians and the greater American Muslim community. Unfortunately, this tragedy reminded everyone of the vicious face of tabloid journalism and the dangers of keyboard sleuths who sat on internet channels and churned out suspects, from the Saudi student, to the 'dark skinned' bag-men,

to missing university students. While many media outlets were restrained, there were also commentators and pundits who spun a tale of Muslim guilt. The Yemeni Embassy in Washington, D.C. raised concerns about MSNBC's Chris Matthews' comments that 'indirectly branded the people of Yemen as terrorists.' Out of the 176 victims at the finish line, the only one who was tackled to the ground and whose apartment was searched by the FBI was a Muslim, 20 year old Saudi Arabian student Abdurrahman Alharbi. Watching the marathon near the finish line when the two bombs exploded, Abdurrahman sustained injuries on his body and started running like other bystanders, only to be grabbed by suspicious members of the public. The first explosion didn't seem to register with many people who thought it was a gas line exploding, said Firas Naji, a
Muslim doctor who was volunteering in medical tent B. "We had no idea what it was," he told the Muslim Link. "The mood swiftly shifted from secure to panicky." Like American Muslims across the nation, Dr. Naji "kept hoping it was not a Muslim." An internal medicine resident at the Cambridge Health Alliance and Boston resident, Dr. Naji loves to run and dreamt of volunteering at the marathon as a physician. Risking more explosions, he continued to treat less acutely injured after the blasts; many runners and spectators were emotionally traumatized and needed attention. Interestingly, he received a call from worried family members in Syria while tending to the injured. "Two hundred >> Boston Pg 31

VA Anti-Hijab Event Results In Formation of Muslim Women's Group By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff Reporter From Ukrainian ultra-feminist group Femen to Act for America!, everyone wants to speak for Muslim women. Sometimes Muslim women just want to speak for themselves. And a newly formed group – the Muslim Women of Northern Virginia (MWNV) – did just that on April 28, 2013. "So many are campaigning to speak for, and about Muslim women; rarely in a good way," said Sandra Amen-Bryan who attended an event hosted by the Republican Women of Clifton (RWC) on February 20, 2013 in Northern Virginia featuring Act for America's Stephanie Reis. The topic of the provocative was the hijab and how it can be a “catalyst for terrorism”. Amen-Bryan said MWNV and their first event on April 28, 2013 are a direct result of last February's Republican

People from other faiths from the Fairlington community were present at the event, including Delegate Rob Krupicka (D) of Virginia's 45th District. But despite Amen Bryan's several attempts

The group was launched due to the conversations dominated by those who are waging propaganda campaigns against Muslims. A large number of Muslim women attended the event held at the Fairlington Community Center although they were not the target audience. A volunteer stationed in the parking lot to help attendees noted an unidentified women taking pictures with an iPhone of Muslim women as they walked in. Getting Shot to Get the Shot - The Story of Palestinian Journalists By Fatimah Waseem
Muslim Link Staff Reporter U.S. soldiers gunned down Palestinian Mazen Dana – a cameraman for Reuters – on August 19, 2003 outside the Abu Ghraib prison, mistaking his camera for a rocket-propelled grenade launcher. Caught in the fog of war, the awardwinning jvournalist was endangered by the army of the same people who rely on Dana for news thousands of miles away from home. Dana’s story, one of many invisible to the public eye, highlights the increasing importance of Palestinian journalists who work behind the scenes, cameras,
and bylines to help produce U.S. news from Jerusalem to Nablus, according to assistant professor of anthropology at Tufts University, Amahl Bishara. How does news from the streets of Gaza by its very people make it to U.S. papers? Could the presence of many international cameras on the West Bank make Palestinians and Israelis mere performers on a world stage? Author of “Backstories: U.S. News Production in Palestinian Politics,” Bishara explored the role of Palestinian journalists – also known as fixers – in U.S. news-making at a talk by the Palestine Center Monday, April 15,
2013. Setting aside concerns of news laced by U.S. bias and news filtering, Bishara focused on news-making from the ground up based on interviews with forty journalists, shadowing journalism sites, fieldwork for over four years, and
interviews with Palestinians about U.S. news texts.

Stories of Those Left Behind: The Wife of Farooque Ahmed On Friday, May 3, 2013, helplessness and resolve were draped in a cream hijab and coral shawl, showing on a face shielded behind over-sized sunglasses. A young wife and mother stood before the Department of Justice in Washington DC, holding her head high as she clutched a poster showing a photograph of the love of her life. Pedestrians walked by. Sahar Ahmed married a network engineer from a decent Pakistani family. The kind of guy most girls dream about, pray for: good looking, fun-loving, and well educated. Her husband, Farooque Ahmed, has been sentenced to 23 years in federal prison, and is currently being held in a Communications Management Unit.
He has been charged with attempting to provide material support to a designated t e r r o r i s t organization, collecting information to assist in planning a terrorist attack on a transit system, and attempting to provide material support to carry out multiple bombings to cause mass casualties. Ahmed immigrated to the United States from Pakistan in 1993, attended college in New York and moved to Northern Virginia in 2005 to work in the telecommunications field. "I had to sell everything and find an
alternative place to live,” said Sahar Ahmed. The family lived in a motel for almost a month after the arrest, and then moved from Virginia to New York. "I prefer not to talk about the case... I have never had an unmonitored conversation with my husband after his arrest,” Sahar told the Muslim Link. She has as many unanswered questions as does the rest of the world. However, she believes that her husband Ahmed was targeted due to his religious beliefs and is a political prisoner of pre-emptive prosecution. "My local Muslim community, except for a very few friends, abandoned us ... I felt very disappointed with them" she says. Sahar Ahmed had been a part of a new mothers group in Northern Virginia which
disbanded in the aftermath of the arrest. She now finds solace in meeting other Muslim families through civil liberties groups like the National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms (NCPCF) and Project Salaam who have similar stories. But this misery would rather not have company. She works full time to support herself, son & husband. "I send him money for seasonal clothes, to be able to communicate with us via emails and phone calls, to purchase additional food items and to buy books, ," says Sahar Ahmed in a matter of fact tone, not demanding any pity, as in the background another family took the stage to demand justice. >> stories Pg 27

On April 26th, 2013 Muhammad Salim, a Somali-American picked taxicab driver, picked up Edward Dahlberg from the Fairfax Country Club in Virginia.
Questions on the meaning of jihad followed. Salim says he tried to explain the concept of different kinds of jihad, or “struggle” to Dahlberg but “he did not like my answer.”
The conversation meandered from Salim’s place of birth to Dahlberg’s Manassasbased company, Emerald Aviation, but quickly escalated into an expletive-laden

Think About It From The Washington Post's May 12, 2013 article “Pentagon grapples with sex crimes by military recruiters”, it seems the US Army understands something about Islamic rules of gender interaction: The Army Recruiting Command, based at Fort Knox, Ky., has recorded a far higher number of sexual misconduct cases. Over the past five years, 387 incidents were investigated. Of those, 327 were “substantiated,” said Lt. Col. S. Justin Platt, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon. The Army has about 10,800 recruiters, by far the most of any of the armed services. The Army expanded its definition of misconduct in 2011 to include such transgressions as sending inappropriate text messages to recruits or failing to observe the Army’s new “buddy system,” which requires two recruiters to be together at all times in the presence of an applicant of the opposite sex. The Army did not provide an annual breakdown for its sexual misconduct figures. Platt said allegations have dropped since the service adopted the buddy system and began stricter screening of recruiters last year. In the wake of the Boston bombings and the outpouring of support from not only Americans but also from compassionate people around the world, Gary Younge, a journalist from Britain's Guardian newspaper tweeted this on April 16, 2013: “I'm up for us 'All Being Bostonions Today'. But then can we all be Yemenis tomorrow & Pakistanis the day after? That's how empathy works.” From the Los Angeles Times May 2, 2013 story “Terror database too vague to flag Boston suspect”,it seems the government's database of “possible terrorists” is close to 1 million. Does that mean 1 out of every 10 American Muslims (or 1 out of every 6 depending on whose statistics you believe) is a possible terrorist? “The Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment list, known as TIDE, was the government's attempt after the Sept. 11 attacks to consolidate a hodgepodge of watch lists, and ensure that every law enforcement agency would be alerted when it came into contact with a possible terrorist. “But TIDE has ballooned to 875,000 records, and critics say it is so all-encompassing that its value has been diminished. The database includes the names of young children of suspected terrorists and of people who have been cleared of suspected links to terrorism, officials say. A single credible tip raising "reasonable suspicion" is enough to add someone to the list. “TIDE is not a watch list — it is a highly classified intelligence database, a master list that feeds information at various secrecy levels to agencies that maintain their own watch lists. “Its biggest customer is the FBI, which runs the Terrorist Screening Database, also known as the consolidated watch list, which has hundreds of thousands of names. That database in turn feeds the "selectee list," whose members are pulled aside for searches at airports, and the self-explanatory no-fly list of just a few thousand members. The FBI database also feeds the State Department's watch list, which is designed to ensure that suspected terrorists don't get U.S. visas.” From the Christian Science Monitor's May 4, 2013 story “Teenagers, social media, and terrorism: a threat level hard to assess”, it seems some senior officials of the New York Police Department believe “guilty until proven innocent” is a legal precept for today's free society. Really. “The greatest mystery in life is the human mind. We don’t know what other people do until it becomes known. Our job is to figure it out, but we need indicators to know something’s not right,” says Sgt. Ed Mullins of the New York Police Department, who is also president of the Sergeants Benevolent Association, the city’s second-largest police union. “Using a zero tolerance approach to track domestic terrorists online is the only reasonable way to analyze online threats these days, especially after the Boston Marathon bombing and news that the suspects had subsequently planned to target Times Square in Manhattan, Mullins says. The way law enforcement agencies approach online activity that appears sinister is this: “If you’re not a terrorist, if you’re not a threat, prove it,” he says. “This is the price you pay to live in free society right now. It’s just the way it is,” Mullins adds.

Finding Halal Stocks and Stock Funds ~ By Joshua Brockwell ~ Author’s note: This is the first installment of a five-part feature on investing. We hope that our readers use the series to learn more about this important subject. From building institutions to preparing for our own retirement, investing is an important, though often misunderstood, part of the American Muslim experience. To recap, last time we discussed stocks and mutual funds in general. We also learned that mutual funds—like the Azzad Funds— pool the assets of a large number of investors and buy stocks or other investments on behalf of those people. They can offer professional money management and a mix of stocks that might not all go up or down in price at the same time. Mutual fund shares, like shares of stock, are redeemable, meaning that they can be sold back to the fund at any time for the current market value, minus redemption fees. Now we turn to halal stocks and stock funds. But before we dive into the dos and don’ts of picking stocks according to the Shariah, a quick note about Islamic economics: The ethics of Islamic economics do not discard the objective of making money and maximizing profits. Ethics exist to regulate profit maximization by making sure that social welfare isn’t sacrificed. Buyers and sellers in the market are allowed to make money and maximize profits as long as it is done ethically, or in a halal way.
“That method can result in arrests of teenagers whose online activity may be more aptly characterized as stupid pranks. >> STOCKS Pg 25

Anger Over Burial Of Boston Bomb Suspect The Islamic Funeral Services of Virginia said in a statement there were no political motivations behind the burial Associated Press – May 11, 2013 - Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaev has been buried in a rural cemetery in Virginia, infuriating some members of the area's Muslim community as well as local officials who said they were not consulted.
A Statement From A Muslim Within The Faith Coalition That Buried Tamerlan Tsarnaev in a Muslim Cemetery
Some of the officials said on Friday that that they would examine whether all laws were followed and could seek to have his body moved elsewhere.
Some of you may have heard different stories in the news about this burial. Here are some things you need to know also. Al-Barzakh Islamic Cemetery is owned and operated by Islamic Funeral Services of Virginia, Inc., a 501(c) (13) nonprofit cemetery company we formed a few years ago due to the dire need for it in the Muslim community. It was the first Islamic cemetery in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
They said they were not informed about the burial and were concerned about the site becoming a shrine to anti-US sympathizers. This week's interment at a small Islamic cemetery ended a long search for a community willing to take the body, which had been kept at a funeral parlour in Massachusetts.
Tsarnaev was killed on April 19 after a gun battle with police. His younger brother, Dzhokhar, was captured later and remains in custody.

Effort to Put Eids On MoCo School Calendar Now Formal Campaign By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff Reporter The Eid outfits are pressed, the last gift is wrapped, and the English mid-term paper is printed and placed in a book bag. Many children in Montgomery County and elsewhere in Maryland will most probably not spend the most precious days of the Islamic year in the warmth of family and friends. They will either be at school or rushing through the Eid Salah, stuffing their Eid finery into a backpack. Instead of visiting friends and family, they will be worrying while changing into school clothes with an excused tardy. On May 1st, 2013 the Maryland chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MD) launched its "Equality for Eid" (E4E) campaign. "This is a grassroots community-based initiative led by CAIR-MD seeking Montgomery County Public School closing for Eid holidays," says CAIR-MD Board Member Saqib Ali.
Montgomery County Council Member George Leventhal, whose letter to Montgomery County Public School officials last year urging them to consider making Eid a recognized school holiday gave new momentum to the “Eid Equality” effort, told guests at the CAIR-MD inaugural banquet on April 28, 2013 that he would keep his son home on Eid. Leventhal is not Muslim.
Many Muslim students make use of the excused absence and miss a day of instruction to celebrate Eid. Other students, especially high schoolers, have no choice but to skip Eid prayers since making up class work for a missed day can take up to three weeks.
"Next Eid al-Adha, October 15th, I will keep my son home from school," pledges Montgomery County Council Member George Leventhal, who has been working closely with the newly formed coalition on developing an effective, appropriate plan of action. The coalition is planning a sit out. The coalition urges all Montgomery County residents to follow suit. This is not a Muslim issue, it is an equality issue say E4E backers. "E4E is trying to mobilize the entire Montgomery County community, regardless of faith," says Zainab Chaudry, Vice-President of CAIR MD. Last November the Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) Board of Education met to adopt a school calendar for the academic year 2013-2014 and decided not to include Eid as a holiday. A coalition building meeting was held in January under the leadership of Councilman Leventhal. E4E members include Montgomery County parents, students, school staff, businesses, non-profit organizations, and county residents.
....
Coalition co-chairs include Anhar Karim, a high school junior who is class president and president of the Montgomery County Muslim Students Association; Mimi Hassanein, Vice President of the Montgomery County Muslim Council and co-chair of the Middle Eastern Advisory Group for Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett; Samira Hussein, long-time CAIR volunteer/activist and Family Service Worker for Pre-K programs for Montgomery County Public Schools; Zaffer Mirza, Board of Trustees Member of Muslim Community Center and Muslim community representative of the Montgomery County Public Schools' "School Calendar Committee"; Mumin Barre, president of the Somali Diaspora Network and Co-Chair of County Executive's African Affairs Advisory Group; and Saqib Ali, CAIR-MD director of government relations and former Maryland State Delegate.
Equality 4 Eid Supporters Are Being Asked To Do Four Things: • Sign a petition at www.equality4eid.com declaring their support for schools closing on Eid holidays • Urge MCPS students and staff to sit out school in solidarity on Tuesday, October 15, 2013 (estimated date for Eid al-Adha 2013) • Visit E4E website and use the link to email MCPS Superintendent Joshua Starr and Board of Education members urging them to treat Muslim students and staff equally and fairly • Support E4E campaign on social media
Montgomery County is known for its exemplary public school system, rated amongst the highest in the nation. All 25 MCPS high schools outperformed the nation in the percentage of graduates scoring a 3 or higher on at least one AP exam. According to a 2012 U.S. News & World Report ranking, 62 schools in Maryland made the list of the best in the country, and of those, the top 8 were located in Montgomery County. The Muslim community needs to unite on this issue, regardless of differences over methods to establish Islamic dates, said Chaudhry. "Instead of being counteractive the community needs to realize the importance of this issue," says Chaudhry. "There maybe resistance. Some groups may pop up claiming creeping shariah but this is not a reason to be discouraged but a reason to take this seriously," she said. What is at stake is the recognition of the Islamic faith, holidays and community as equal to others in the county, added Chaudhry.

For Dar Al Hijrah, Having the Biggest Ramadan In Town Means A Lot of Hiring By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff Reporter Ramadan preparations are in full swing at Dar Al Hijrah, Falls Church, VA. Every evening about 2000 worshipers will visit the center in the blessed month. Several new initiatives are planned for this trend setting Islamic Center. This year Dar Al Hijrah will be attempting to be more environmentally friendly and avoid using consumable products. The prayers will be led by the director of the Quran Institute, instead of bringing the reciter from overseas to reduce the carbon footprint. Dar Al Hijrah prepares approximately 1000 meals a night for Iftar. An Islamic Center the size of Dar Al Hijrah cannot rely on just volunteers to efficiently run its massive Ramadan program; it hires temporary workers during Ramadan and has been doing so for the past 15 years. According to The Executive Director Samir Abo-Issa, to be able to serve the
community better on several levels, they have found the best way is to get people who have the time and are able to work. Nine kitchen positions are open to help prep vegetables, prepare salad, prep meats and fish, and clean kitchen. A Suhur cook position is also available to cook eggs, feta cheese, foul, salad, and pita or other suhur diet for the 200 people who eat the pre-dawn meal at the center. The center is also looking for two dishwashers with experience in using a commercial dish washing machine. An Iftar Team will help serve food, set up and clean up. Several people are needed. To ensure a pleasant and sanitary worship experience, two extra positions are open to clean bathrooms, hallways, and lobby. Learning from problems and experiences from previous years Dar Al Hijrah administration has some solid plans in the works. "We have had challenges with families
leaving their children and going to other centers or other activities during the evening prayer time," says Imam Johari, the outreach director. "This year we will institute new programs and policies to encourage parents to stay with their children or take the children with them at the activity that they are attending." Dar Al Hijrah is enhancing the youth program by providing on-site and off-site activities. To facilitate this a Taraweeh school and new youth program is planned

• Because of Ramadan generosity, and extra reward for giving during Ramadan, many masjid members give above and beyond their usual sadaqah at the end of the year. Masajid should be prepared to document the giving, and securely handle the increased donations and sadaqah; provide receipts etc.
• Have a welcoming team ready for both the womens' and mens' section equipped with sign in sheets and plenty of Islamic literature. The masjid will see many faces during Ramadan that may not attend regularly. Having a sign in sheet can help administration reach out to them

It is easy to see the difference between someone who reads and someone who does not read. The word choices, ideas and creative thinking book lovers tend to have gives them away. However, for the first time in history more people are reading more words, but our attention spans are decreasing. An article in Scientific American by Coco Ballantyne -- written before the widespread adoption of e-readers and tablets – attempted to describe the differences in reading online from reading books. Citing a study from the Journal of Research in Reading, she states that the simple acts like scrolling and changeable dimensions of text are affecting our neural reasoning. Prime Minister: Masjid Complex 'A Treasure' for Turkish Americans, Will Showcase Turkish Culture, Civilization By Muslim Link Staff On Wednesday, May 15, 2013, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan placed a ceremonial stone on a 15-acre construction site in Lanham, Maryland that will likely become the largest and most striking examples of Islamic architecture in the western hemisphere. The Turkish American Culture and Civilization Center (TACC) is a project of the government of Turkey and is meant to"serve as a social, cultural, and religious center for all visitors, including activities for the promotion and introduction of the values of the Turkish Civilization" according to an information packet distributed by TACC at the invitation only ground breaking ceremony, The project is well underway, and two industrial cranes tower over the skyline along Good Luck Road. Concrete and steel pillars are up, and even two small domes are already visible. TACC leaders estimate the complex will be completed by October 2014. The cost of the 5-buidling complex is estimated to be around $100 million according to sources familiar with the engineering aspects of the project. The entire complex will be serviced by an underground garage. The Muslim Link covered the ceremony and presents these images to capture the event as well as the monumental construction project for our readers. -- TML Top, Prime Minister Erdogan talks about what the TACC center means to Turkish Americans as well as to American society at large. He criticized groups promoting Islamophobia and urged the many Turkish graduate students to get involved with the project. He also delighted the crowd of several hundred guests by saying he will come back for the October 2014 opening ceremony "if he is still around". At right, a recent photo of the 15-acre construction site. TACC says about 30% of the construction is completed.

The TACC Center will consist of five main buildings: a masjid constructed using 16th century classical Ottoman architecture that can hold 760 worshipers; a two-story, 19,990 SF Cultural Center Building including a
220-seating performance hall; a 9,850 SF recreational building with a 180-seat restaurant and traditional coffee shop; a 43,450 SF traditional Turkish bath for up to 22 people at a time and indoor pool and sports center; and 18,500

the main buildings. A few traditionally designed residential buildings, Turkish gardens and fountains, and outdoor recreational areas will also be a part of the complex. Images courtesy of TACC.

Ed Dahlberg is a resident of Clifton, VA, the same small town where the Republican Women of Clifton hosted an anti-Muslim speech a few months back. Dahlberg turned himself into the Fairfax police but is out on bond. Police charged him with a misdemeanor assault. Salims’s attorney, Gadeir Abbass and the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) would like the prosecutor to upgrade the charges to a felony hate crime to reflect the severity of the crime. “Criminal law is the standard of conduct of a community and certain acts are outside acceptable behavior. The prosecutor has to send a clear message to the American Muslim community and the entire country that hate has no place in our society,” says Abbass. “This is not an issue of being a decent person, these actions are illegal and need to be dealt with accordingly,” added Abbass. Rhetoric often leads to policies. ”When politicians make anti-Muslim statements it corroborates, perhaps, the ignorance of some Americans and raises innocent ignorance to hardened forms of bigotry that will inevitably lead to acts of violence,” says Abbass. “What happened to Muhammad is not particularly unique to American Muslims. Anti-Muslim violence is common. What is unique is that he has it recorded; it is very rare that [the public] gets to hear the ugliness of anti-Muslim prejudice,” says Abbass.

Most Shariah scholars agree that a twostep screening process best determines compliance with the principles of Islamic financial transactions: 1) Qualitative: The company’s lines of business go under the microscope. Scholars and fund managers look for any indication that the company engages in transactions or other activities that are prohibited. 2) Quantitative: The company must also pass certain financial tests. For example, it can’t have too much debt on its books. These two steps get to the heart of the process for finding halal stocks and stock funds.
Introducing AAOIFI You may be wondering how we know for sure which lines of business are impermissible and how the financial tests are derived. Not everyone agrees on the right way to go about screening out the impermissible, let alone the questionable, candidates for investment. So, it helps to have a set of universally applied standards. For that reason among others, an international entity called AAOIFI was established in 1990. AAOIFI stands for the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions. AAOIFI’s Shariah Advisory Board consists of a group of world class scholars, specifically those with an extensive background in the fiqh (jurisprudence) of trade and transactions. Regardless to what conclusion you have come to and how you feel about him, Tamerian Tsarnaev was a human being. His dead body deserved to be buried. The dead body of Adam Lanza who killed 26 people (including 20 children) at Sandy Hook Elementary School deserved to be buried also... and was buried with little notice. Your dead body will also deserve to be buried, regardless to how you die or what you did before you died, whether you are Muslim, Christian, Jew, or don't identify with any religion. The reporter misquoted me. I did not say anything about "his violent actions." I said "He has been buried. His dead body

He thinks someone befriended Ahmed, an informant, and 'worked' on Ahmed's weaknesses on behalf of the FBI: his short temper, and naiveté. Someone who targeted Ahmed after his verbalization of unpopular views, opposition to foreign policy, which is within his rights. Someone who was a new addition to Farooque's life prior to his arrest sent on a mission to entrap Ahmed. "I can not trust any new [friendships] after an experience like this," says Osman. In a clipped British accent, Sahar Ahmed hesitantly tells me how she works full time while her mother in law takes care of her son. Funeral Services of Virginia did not need to consult the whole Muslim community to bury a dead body. It consulted among its members, supporters and the Qur'an and the sunnah (traditions and practices of our Prophet). Prayers and peace be upon him. That is our way of life, or our religion. What would Muhammad have done? What would Moses have done? What would Jesus have done? Peace be upon them.
I and other members of the Islamic Funeral Services of Virginia, Inc. have been flooded with media and personal calls concerning this matter. Here is sound basis for the action taken by the Islamic Funeral Services of Virginia: It is reported that Prophet Muhammad (prayers and peace be upon him) stood up for a bier that was passing by containing the body of a Christian. When asked why he stood up, he said "...that dead body has obeyed its Lord." So Islamic

COMMUNITY NEWS | 29 Council).

The members agreed that there was a lack of communication among the youth groups, and that there was more they could do to reduce overlap of activities, collaborate on region-wide initiatives, and share resources and best practices.
On February 7, 2013, youth group leaders and representatives from eight Masjids came together at Al-Huda School for their inaugural meeting as the Muslim Youth DMV Council (MY DMV
“The MY DMV Council represents an opportunity for the young Muslim’s dream: Be a part of one masjid, but be connected to all, and know what's going on in all of your friends’ and fami-
lies’ communities,” said Haris Qudsi, a youth leader from Baltimore. Currently, 18 youth groups are connected through MY DMV including: (VA) ADAMS Center, Dar Al-Hijrah, MakeSpace, Mustafa Center and McLean Islamic Center; (DC) Avondale Islamic Center, IRHSCA, and First Hijrah Foundation; (MD) Dar AlTaqwa, Dar-us-Salaam, Islamic Center of Maryland (ICM), Islamic Society of Baltimore (ISB), Islamic Society of Frederick (ISF), Islamic Society of Washington Area (ISWA), Maryum Is-
lamic Center, Masjid Fatima, Muslim Community Center (MCC), and the Prince George’s Muslim Association (PGMA). The youth leaders meet regularly at a new Masjid every month. "Unity is powerful - if our youth understand this, than the future of this ummah looks bright," said Amira Ali, a teacher at ICM. Muhammad Ishaq, program director at Maryum Islamic Center, concurred. “The goal of unifying masaajid through the youth (the energizer bunnies of the community) is something revolutionary and a model we hope to implement throughout the country. We admire the legacy our elder generations have left behind and hope to raise the bar even further.” Members of the Council recognize that many such unity-focused initiatives at the Masjid and MSA levels have either dissolved or became inactive. However, they are optimistic. “For the first time, we are seeing youth coming forward to lead their peers and also engage the larger Masjid community,” shared Ibrahim Khan, youth director and executive council member at PGMA. “They have been brought up here in America, and are invested in their community’s future. We now want to create a model where we can train youth and make sure this runs strong even after the current leaders have moved on.” MY DMV Council's upcoming projects include organizing a Domestic Violence awareness campaign through the Friday khutbas, area wide sports events like the upcoming 3Di Annual Basketball Tournament in June, a joint barbeque in late summer, and a Ramadhan Qur’an competition which would also bring together area imams for one night of taraweeh. "It is truly humbling to be a part of something of this magnitude. I’m excited to see many youth leaders from the area coming together for the sake of Allah. A great step towards a greater future, In Shaa Allah,” said Abdul-Saboor Khan, a youth leader from ICM. The author is co-founder of the Muslim Youth DMV Council.

The lively, multi-ethnic panel also featured Sr. Zahra, Zareena Shakir, and Dewita Soeharjono; the panel was moderated by Tanaz Haddadi. Each woman told her own story. Author of several publications, an Islamic Scholar, a mother and grandmother, Dr. Alwani laid out the Quranic foundation for gender relations in Islam with the following verses: O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer. Quran: Surah Nisa' verse 1 O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted. Verse 49: 13 She urged the audience to question their own understandings. "Any question on women in Islam, we have to ask how does it fit with the Quranic model?" said Dr. Alwani.

Many Israeli soldiers inhibit Palestinian journalists in two ways: by rescinding press cards, restricting movement, limited news production, and maligning claims to professionalism and objectivity or by shooting journalists to limit news production claims to professional and objectivity and create climate of fear, Bishara said. But even within the Palestinian border, public backlash against reporters remains high due to fear and uncertainty, she said, showing footage of Palestinian civilians shoving Dana off the streets at a protest.

Raised in a Javanese Buddhist and HinduIslam mix, she did not embrace her faith until later in life when she found Allah. She explained that culture and religion can play a big part in the mistreatment of women. "No religion teaches mistreatment of another human being including women," she proclaimed. "I am a human being who happens to be a woman," said Zareena Shakir, the host of the TV show Perspectives of Interfaith. She said being an African American, a Muslim, and a women, some might say she already has three strikes against her. "I do not have any strikes against mewell it depends on what game you are playing; baseball or bowling; let's bowl," said Shakir. Zareena uses quips to shoot down misogyny and bigotry. When people thrust her with misinformed questions about the status of a woman in Islam, she often answers. "Did God make a mistake? Allah knows best." Her work in the media has made her aware of the mistreatment of women everywhere. She broadcasts awareness of the humanity of Muslims through film and her show. Her latest project is a movie documentary of three Muslim women who started their spiritual journey to Islam in the late 40s, early 50s. Their Muslim journey covers 50 years each,
Despite this violence and the lack of ability to directly influence news coverage, many Palestinians are valuable assets to foreign correspondence, providing skills of proximity like language, knowledge of multiple customs and ways of life while still being able to stay safe, understand language and custom, and use piles of dirt – once yesterday’s rubble – as today’s tripod stand. Palestinian footage, information, and news interviews, however, do not have a clear effect on international coverage. Soeharjono said that she could only speak about Indonesia, her birthplace. In Indonesia women have equality- equal pay, a female president, ambassadors and ministers.
She was raised in Africa. Her step-father was a cross between Norman Schwartz and John Wayne. He used to kick his Muslim servants, who would be praying on a prayer mat, with his cowboy boots. "I needed solace and found it with the missionary kids- church gave me peace and contentment," said Sr. Zahra. It was an intellectual exercise in monotheism that led her to Islam: the rights of women in the religion, system of justice gave space in her heart for Islam. With her real life witty stories, she informed the audience that there are many Asian American Muslim stereotypes. Her section really cemented MNVA's mission that one doesn't have to be famous to relay their own stories about women in Islam. The audience asked a variety of questions. One question asked was statistically which country treats women the worst. To this question, Sr. Zareena said that she didn't know about other countries but the U.S. treats women the worst when it comes to the prison system. America has 2.5 million people in jail - the largest amount in the world- a portion of that are women incarcerated for drug charges that

Another question asked by the audience was about the two testimonies for women and one for men. Dr. Alwani explained verse 2:84--the longest verse in the Quran – which deals in debt, transactions with financial issues. "Revealed as if preparing women to be involved in the economy, in developing the economy of that time," she explained to the room. She said that over time it took a turn and the interpretation shifted from empowering a woman to devaluing one into half a man, whereas the Quranic objective was to empower women with that verse. "Speak out online, network, stand tall and walk tall. Predict [dangers] and carry your cell phones, we live in dangerous times," Sr. Zahra advised the Muslim women in the audience. Immigrants Fear Split Families As Debate Underway in Senate By Fatimah Waseem
employment-based immigration was ungrounded. “Though South Asian Americans are often framed as benefiting exclusively from policy reform related to skilled workers or graduates of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), our community comprises of a diversity of individuals from janitors and domestic workers to doctors and engineers, from undocumented individuals to visa holders, legal permanent residents, refugees and asylees, and American citizens,” she said.
Muslim Link Staff Reporter For ten years, a local University of D.C. student waited for a green card from Ethiopia. His sister, a U.S. citizen from Silver Spring, Maryland, asked their mother to call him over, knowing that the waiting period would be shorter if his mother sponsored him. The ten years passed by slowly. By the summer of 2008, new immigration legislation was being debated in Congress, forcing the DC resident to wait longer. In a major overturn of an immigration system that traditionally favors family ties over economic criteria, senators could dramatically limit the number of green cards for extended families of U.S. citizens while easing the immigration path for high-skilled foreign workers, according to proposed amendments to the Immigration and Nationality Act. If passed, the proposal would make it harder for siblings and married adult children of U.S. citizens to become citizens by eliminating 90,000 VISAs for those categories, a move proponents say would address the 4.9 million backlog of immigrant applications and address the country’s economic needs. Such family members would still be able to apply for VISAs but would need qualifications like tech skills and English proficiency to increase chances of getting a VISA. However, critics say cutting extended family VISAs would rattle the core of an immigration platform that has long supported immigrant family unification, shelving the social costs of family preservation in favor of measurable economic benefit that would compound the existing problem posed by long waiting lists. “An integral part of our humanity is the understanding that children – at any
age – are our family. That brothers and sisters are our family,” wrote Stewart Kwoh, executive director of the Asian Pacific American Legal Center. “Families must not be manipulated and used as a bargaining chip in a misleading and misguided attempt to characterize immigration as a zero-sum game.” Nearly 60 percent of VISAs are granted based on familial ties and about 15 percent of VISAs are granted on an employment basis, according to Demetrios Papademetriou of the Migration Policy Institute. The government currently gives spouses and minor children of U.S. citizens top priority, followed by unmarried children older than 21. “For years, the problems within this system have frequently resulted in long term separation from our families for years or even decades to the backlogs, waiting lists, and visa caps,” Manar Waheed, policy director of the South Asian Americans Leading Together (SAALT), a national non-profit, told The Muslim Link, “The backlogs and waiting lists must be eliminated and visa caps raised so that families are not separated for years or decades on end.” Republicans have shot down these recommendations in the past. Conversely, a 2007 bill that would have reduced the number of family VISAs did not advance in the senate following protest from some
Democrats and the Catholic Church. The proposals, backed by four senate Democrats and four Republicans, have been overshadowed by a fierce focus on laying a citizenship for the nation’s 11 million undocumented immigrants. Seven Democratic senators asked the bipartisan group to reconsider their “troubling plans.” “Different types of family members can play an important role in each other’s lives, and for some Americans, a brother or sister is the only family they have.” Giving a green light to foreign workers would provide a “needed complement to the native-born labor force,” said Ben Johnson, executive direct of the American Immigration Council said in a March 5 statement to the House judiciary committee. “Economists, social scientists, business leaders, and a broad range of other experts agree that innovation is the key to growing the economy and creating jobs. And the key to innovation is building, growing, attracting, and retaining a skilled workforce,” Johnson said, citing a 2012 report which found working foreign-born graduates created an average of 2.6 jobs for American workers. Waheed, however, said this focus on framing the economic benefits of
But even across the isle, experts agreed something has to give in a system with a large backlog of VISAs and long waiting periods. “We need reform that improves our system, not reform that separates us from more family members,” Waheed said. She said she would like to see comprehensive immigration reform that creates accessible pathways to legislation, keeps families together, eliminates backlogs, and increases caps for family and employment visas, stressing the importance of a “holistic approach” to allow all members to “effectively contribute to our society in a way that allows our nation to flourish, prosper, and succeed.” Contending otherwise, Papademetriou said, would refute “our longstanding American tradition of valuing, respecting, and honoring brothers, sisters, and children as beloved close family members” – even if that longstanding traditions may have existing flaws. Senators are currently debating the immigration overhaul legislation along with dozens of amendments dealing with scores of immigration related issues including border security; they are expected to finalize the legislation and vote later this month.

25th Anniversary Short Lived As Al-Rahmah School Plans Big for Future By Muslim Link Staff Soon after the Islamic Society of Baltimore move into its newly constructed masjid and community center in the 1980s, they started Al-Rahmah School. Few could have imagined growing from the initial student body of 27 students in 1987 to 350 students today, On their 25th year anniversary and with the support of around 800 guests who attended the April 27, 2013 fundraising dinner for the school , a new group of visionaries is planning for the next 25 years. Dr. Zoobia Chaudhry, an Al-Rahmah parent and the chairperson of the school's Board of Education, laid out the vision for the future of Al-Rahmah in eight areas. The first priority is to further develop the administrative structure of the school. This year long time principal Laura Abdur-Rahman announced her retirement, and after a long search involving 23 applicants Al-Rahmah hired Dr. Fawzia Fazily who holds a doctorate in Education in Executive Leadership. Dr. Zoobia added that department chairs for each school level are part of the leadership plan. Other future priorities outlined by Dr. Zoobia include investing in dedicated on-site healthcare services for the student body; hiring a trained secondary school counselor; further implementing 'smart classroom' technology; opening up more professional development opportunities to the teaching staff; revamping the Arabic and Islamic studies curriculums; and enhancing campus security. The highlight of Dr. Zoobia's presentation involved the Board of Education's conceptual drawing for their vision of a new campus. said Imam Suhaib, referring to an arabic anecdote that described the death of an ant who did not have the courage to climb a hill.
After nasheed and Qur'an presentations from Al-Rahmah students, the keynote speaker for the evening, Boston Imam Suhaib Webb, addressed the packed gymnasium.
Deluged by the bombings in Boston, Imam Suhaib spoke about the effect Muslims should have on society, and how American Muslim culture is tied to the culture of America.
"If you remember only one thing this evening, it is this: don't be like an ant"
"I challenge Islamic schools to ask 'are you preparing children or incubating
Top right, Al-Rahmah students perform for the full house crowd. Bottom right, the conceptual future plan of the Board of Education for the ISB campus has steady growth in mind. Referencing a Jewish community in Boston that recently raised $22 million at a fundraiser, he said until Muslims bring numbers like that to their institutions, "we will be plagued by mediocrity". Brother Moutasem Atiya conducted the fundraising with some help from Dr. Maqbool Patel. About $171,000 was raised of the $200,000 target.

Will Pakistan Finally Stand Up Against Illegal US Drone Attacks? The Peshawar high court has delivered a damning verdict on the strikes. Pakistan must now move towards protecting the security of its citizens By Clive Stafford Smith May 12, 2013 "Information Clearing House" -"The Guardian" - Thursday's landmark decision by the Pakistani high court in Peshawar is a remarkable document: Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan examines the US use of drones against Pakistan's tribal areas and reaches several conclusions that, while obvious to most sensible observers, seem to have eluded American authorities for several years. The case was filed last year by Shahzad Akbar, of the Foundation for Fundamental Rights (FFR), a legal charity based in Islamabad. The case was brought by families of victims killed in a US drone strike on 17 March 2011. The strike – one of more than 300 Obama has launched at Pakistan – is infamous: more than 50 people were killed, including many community elders who had gathered to settle a local dispute over a chromite
"The government of Pakistan shall mak[e] a request to the UN secretary general to constitute an independent war crime tribunal, to direct the US authorities to immediately stop the drone strikes ... and to immediately arrange for the complete and full compensation for the victims' families." mine. For the locals it was the equivalent of a strike on the high court itself. The chief justice's first finding is perhaps the most obvious: "[Drone strikes] are absolutely illegal and a blatant violation of sovereignty of the state of Pakistan." The strikes are, he says, international war crimes, given that there is no state of war between the US and its nominal
ally, Pakistan. It does not matter whether General Pervez Musharraf gave the CIA a wink and a nod when he was the country's dictator. "[T] here is nothing in writing to the effect," writes the chief justice. In any event, no government can legitimately authorise the murder of its own citizens – certainly not without a public announcement
through the democratic process. Indeed, Musharraf is currently facing the music for a number of illegal acts he allegedly took while in office. The American use of drones is, in the chief justice's legal opinion, wholly disproportionate under international law. He notes that 9/11 still provides the US administration's pretext for a "global war on terror", yet there has been "not a single … terror incident … anywhere in the USA" emanating from Pakistan in more than a decade since. How, then, can it be proportionate to kill more than 3,000 Pakistanis, including "infant babies, pre-teen and teenage children, women and others". Rather than respond with force first and ask questions afterwards, the chief justice orders the Pakistan government to try to >> illegal Pg 37
With Bags of Cash, C.I.A. Seeks Influence in Afghanistan By MATTHEW ROSENBERG
The C.I.A., which declined to comment for this article, has long been known to support some relatives and close aides of Mr. Karzai. But the new accounts of off-the-books cash delivered directly to his office show payments on a vaster scale, and with a far greater impact on everyday governing.
The New York Times, April 28, 2013 KABUL, Afghanistan — For more than a decade, wads of American dollars packed into suitcases, backpacks and, on occasion, plastic shopping bags have been dropped off every month or so at the offices of Afghanistan’s president — courtesy of the Central Intelligence Agency. All told, tens of millions of dollars have flowed from the C.I.A. to the office of President Hamid Karzai, according to current and former advisers to the Afghan leader.
....
Moreover, there is little evidence that the payments bought the influence the C.I.A. sought. Instead, some American officials said, the cash has fueled corruption and empowered warlords, undermining Washington’s exit strategy from Afghanistan. “We called it ‘ghost money,’ ” said Khalil Roman, who served as Mr. Karzai’s deputy chief of staff from 2002 until
2005. “It came in secret, and it left in secret.”

solve the dispute through the rule of law. The Pakistan government must make an immediate and genuine complaint to the UN. If the UN security council reaches the appropriate conclusion (which he feels legally it must, absent a US veto), or the general assembly adopts a resolution, and "the US authorities do not comply … the government of Pakistan shall sever all ties with the USA and as a mark of protest shall deny all logistic and other facilities to the USA within Pakistan". Then he makes another self-evident pronouncement: the Pakistan military's first obligation must be to preserve the

“The biggest source of corruption in Afghanistan,” one American official said, “was the United States.” The United States was not alone in delivering cash to the president. Mr. Karzai acknowledged a few years ago that Iran regularly gave bags of cash to one of his top aides. At the time, in 2010, American officials jumped on the payments as evidence of an aggressive Iranian campaign to buy influence and poison Afghanistan’s relations with the United States. What they did not say was that the C.I.A. was also plying the presidential palace with cash — and unlike the Iranians, it still is. American and Afghan officials familiar with the payments said the agency’s main goal in providing the cash has been to maintain access to Mr. Karzai and his inner circle and to guarantee the agency’s influence at the presidential palace, which wields tremendous power in Afghanistan’s highly centralized government. The officials spoke about the money only on the condition of anonymity. It is not clear that the United States is getting what it pays for. Mr. Karzai’s willingness to defy the United States — and the Iranians, for that matter — on an array of issues seems to have only

Again, rather than shoot first, the government shall administer a "proper warning"; if this does not work, the Pakistan air force must immediately shoot down the drones. Even though I am American myself, I find it hard to argue with this unhappy suggestion: after all, if the Pakistanis were terrorizing Texas with Predator drones, I would expect Barack Obama to send the US air force into immediate action. Ultimately, the US must bear full responsibility for its actions. "The government of Pakistan shall mak[e] a request to the UN secretary general
grown as the cash has piled up. Instead of securing his good graces, the payments may well illustrate the opposite: Mr. Karzai is seemingly unable to be bought. Over Iran’s objections, he signed a strategic partnership deal with the United States last year, directly leading the Iranians to halt their payments, two senior Afghan officials said. Now, Mr. Karzai is seeking control over the Afghan militias raised by the C.I.A. to target operatives of Al Qaeda and insurgent commanders, potentially upending a critical part of the Obama administration’s plans for fighting militants as conventional military forces pull back this year. But the C.I.A. has continued to pay, believing it needs Mr. Karzai’s ear to run its clandestine war against Al Qaeda and its allies, according to American and Afghan officials. Like the Iranian cash, much of the C.I.A.’s money goes to paying off warlords and politicians, many of whom have ties to the drug trade and, in some cases, the Taliban. The result, American and Afghan officials said, is that the agency has greased the wheels of the same patronage networks that American diplomats and law enforcement agents have struggled unsuccessfully to dismantle, leaving the government in the grips of what are basically organized crime syndicates. The cash does not appear to be subject

one democratically elected government to another. The apparent victor, Nawaz Sharif's PLM-N party, has promised to stop US drone strikes in Pakistan. The court's decision will light a judicial fire under this vow.
This judicial decision is all about democracy and the rule of law. America has held itself out as a proponent of these ideals for more than 200 years. It is a shame that the CIA's supposedly secret drones campaign marks such a sharp departure from both, following on from earlier policy catastrophes such as Guantánamo Bay and Abu Ghraib.
Clive Adrian Stafford Smith is a British attorney who specializes in the areas of civil rights and the death penalty in the United States of America. He has represented some of the detainees held since 2002 at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp as enemy combatants. He is the Legal Director of the UK branch of the human rights not-for-profit Reprieve. In 2005 he received the Gandhi International Peace Award.
In contrast, Saturday's election marked the first time in its 66-year history that Pakistan has made the transition from
to the oversight and restrictions placed on official American aid to the country or even the C.I.A.’s formal assistance programs, like financing Afghan intelligence agencies. And while there is no evidence that Mr. Karzai has personally taken any of the money — Afghan officials say the cash is handled by his National Security Council — the payments do in some cases work directly at odds with the aims of other parts of the American government in Afghanistan, even if they do not appear to violate American law. Handing out cash has been standard procedure for the C.I.A. in Afghanistan since the start of the war. During the 2001 invasion, agency cash bought the services of numerous warlords, including Muhammad Qasim Fahim, the current first vice president. “We paid them to overthrow the Taliban,” the American official said. The C.I.A. then kept paying the Afghans to keep fighting. For instance, Mr. Karzai’s half brother, Ahmed Wali Karzai, was paid by the C.I.A. to run the Kandahar Strike Force, a militia used by the agency to combat militants, until his assassination in 2011. A number of senior officials on the Afghan National Security Council are also individually on the agency’s payroll, Afghan officials said. While intelligence agencies often pay
foreign officials to provide information, dropping off bags of cash at a foreign leader’s office to curry favor is a more unusual arrangement. Afghan officials said the practice grew out of the unique circumstances in Afghanistan, where the United States built the government that Mr. Karzai runs. To accomplish that task, it had to bring to heel many of the warlords the C.I.A. had paid during and after the 2001 invasion. By late 2002, Mr. Karzai and his aides were pressing for the payments to be routed through the president’s office, allowing him to buy the warlords’ loyalty, a former adviser to Mr. Karzai said. Then, in December 2002, Iranians showed up at the palace in a sport utility vehicle packed with cash, the former adviser said. The C.I.A. began dropping off cash at the palace the following month, and the sums grew from there, Afghan officials said. Payments ordinarily range from hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars, the officials said, though none could provide exact figures. The money is used to cover a slew of off-the-books expenses, like paying off lawmakers or underwriting delicate diplomatic trips or informal negotiations. >> afghanistan II Pg 38

Much of it also still goes to keeping old warlords in line. One is Abdul Rashid Dostum, an ethnic Uzbek whose militia served as a C.I.A. proxy force in 2001. He receives nearly $100,000 a month from the palace, two Afghan officials said. Other officials said the amount was significantly lower.
Mr. Dostum, who declined requests for comment, had previously said he was given $80,000 a month to serve as Mr. Karzai’s emissary in northern Afghanistan. “I asked for a year up front in cash so that I could build my dream house,” he was quoted as saying in a 2009 interview with Time magazine.
by name.
Some of the cash also probably ends up in the pockets of the Karzai aides who handle it, Afghan and Western officials said, though they would not identify any
Interestingly, the cash from Tehran appears to have been handled with greater transparency than the dollars from the C.I.A., Afghan officials said.
That is not a significant concern for the C.I.A., said American officials familiar with the agency’s operations. “They’ll work with criminals if they think they have to,” one American former official said.
The Iranian payments were routed through Mr. Karzai’s chief of staff. Some of the money was deposited in an account in the president’s name at a state-run bank, and some was kept at the palace. The sum delivered would then be announced at the next cabinet meeting. The Iranians gave $3 million to well over $10 million a year, Afghan officials said. When word of the Iranian cash leaked out in October 2010, Mr. Karzai told reporters that he was grateful for it. He then added: “The United States is doing the same thing. They are providing cash to some of our offices.” At the time, Mr. Karzai’s aides said he was referring to the billions in formal aid the United States gives. But the former adviser said in a recent interview that the president was in fact referring to the C.I.A.’s bags of cash. No one mentions the agency’s money at cabinet meetings. It is handled by a small clique at the National Security Council, including its administrative chief, Mohammed Zia Salehi, Afghan officials said. Mr. Salehi, though, is better known for being arrested in 2010 in connection with a sprawling, American-led investigation that tied together Afghan cash smuggling, Taliban finances and the opium trade. Mr. Karzai had him released within hours, and the C.I.A. then helped persuade the Obama administration to back off its anticorruption push, American officials said. After his release, Mr. Salehi jokingly came up with a motto that succinctly summed up America’s conflicting priorities. He was, he began telling colleagues, “an enemy of the F.B.I., and a hero to the C.I.A.” Mark Mazzetti contributed reporting from Washington. In accordance with Title 17 U.S.C. Getting to Know America's Favorite Muslims Weddady’s Free Arabs, American Islamic Congress And The Pro-Israel Funders Who Helped Them Rise By Max Blumenthal The Electronic Intifada, New York City 7 May 2013 On 18 April, three days after a bombing killed three and left many more wounded at the Boston marathon, a figure unknown to most Americans stepped suddenly into the national spotlight. At a nationally broadcast interfaith service addressed by President Barack Obama, a Mauritanianborn social media activist named Nasser Weddady appeared on stage as the designated representative of Boston’s Muslim community. Introduced as the chairman of the New England Interfaith Council and the civil rights outreach director for the American Islamic Congress (AIC), Weddady delivered a well-received sermon referencing Jewish and Islamic scripture on non-violence. Unlike the notable Jewish, Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Protestant religious figures chosen to speak at the service, Weddady was not an ordained clergy member, nor was he known to many members of the community he claimed to represent. In fact, he was a last-minute replacement for Suhaib Webb, a Muslim educator and imam of the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, the largest Muslim house of prayer in New England. Commenting on Twitter that the office of Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick “made the call” to replace him, Webb said the governor chose “Muhammad Weddady,” misidentifying Nasser Weddady. When another Twitter user asked Webb who Weddady was, he responded, “No idea.” A report by the right-wing, pro-Israel website JNS.org suggested that Webb’s replacement by Weddady was politically motivated (“Muslim Brotherhood-linked mosque’s imam replaced as speaker at service for Boston Marathon attack victims,” 21 April 2013). According to the article, groups including self-styled “terror expert” Steven Emerson’s Investigative Project on Terrorism, the anti-Muslim outfit Americans for Peace and Tolerance created by David Project founder Charles Jacobs, and the Anti-Def-

amation League (ADL) claimed Webb’s mosque “has an anti-Semitic and anti-Israel history that started with its founding by members of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, the parent organization of Hamas.” The allegations stemmed from a failed campaign directed by Jacobs and assisted by the ADL, Emerson and other anti-Muslim elements to block the construction of the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center. In May 2010, after the dust cleared,
Congress by The Electronic Intifada revealed a disturbing history that stretches back to the invasion of Iraq, with political patronage from the Bush administration building the organization from the ground up. Despite its claim to promote tolerance, the AIC has depended on substantial support from the very same elements that fought tooth and nail to sabotage the Islamic Society of Boston, and which seem determined to undermine Muslim communal organizing efforts across the country. The organization has managed to maintain US government funding during the Obama era, serving as a faithful arm of soft Ameri-
At the nationally televised interfaith service following the Boston bombings, he was a sudden replacement for Boston Imam Suhaib Webb. The Muslim community did not know him. Who is he? Governor Patrick appeared at the mosque, seemingly rebuking the cast of Islamophobes that smeared it as a terrorist front. Patrick told the congregation, “Yours is a peaceful faith, and I know that … .” Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley also offered support for the mosque, dispatching a staffer to attend Patrick’s speech and earmarking $50,000 in funds to “sensitivity training for law enforcement officials” (“‘Yours is a peaceful faith’,” Boston Globe, 23 May 2010).
can power in the Middle East while nurturing the creation of Weddady’s new “Free Arabs” website, a self-proclaimed portal to “Democracy, Secularism, [and] Fun” that eschews criticism of Western policies towards the Middle East while promoting US military intervention in Syria.
Disturbing history
According to Internal Revenue Service 990 information filings, the AIC is funded largely by a pool of right-wing donors responsible for bankrolling key players in America’s Islamophobia industry, from Charles Jacobs to Emerson’s Investigative Project on Terrorism and Daniel Pipes’ Middle East Forum. These same donors have pumped millions into major pro-Israel organizations, including groups involved in settlement activity and the Friends of the IDF, which provides assistance to the Israeli army.
The JNS.org report has not been confirmed by Governor Patrick’s office, Webb, or by Weddady. However, the replacement of Webb, perhaps the most notable Muslim religious authority in New England, with an obscure lay figure raises questions about why the local Muslim community was not able to delegate its own representative. And who was Weddady? Was he, in fact, a rising human rights activist promoting tolerance among Bostonians and spreading freedom abroad? And was his employer, the AIC, simply a group of earnest Muslim do-gooders “trying to build bridges among people of different faiths and ethnicities,” as Public Radio International’s The World claimed it was on its 16 April edition? An investigation of the American Islamic
Weddady and AIC co-founder and Executive Director Zainab Al-Suwaij did not respond to calls and emailed queries requesting comment for this article.
Among the AIC’s most reliable supporters is the Donors Capital Fund, which has provided at least $85,000 in funding since 2008. Donors Capital was among the seven foundations identified in the Center for American Progress’s 2011 report Fear Inc. as “the lifeblood of the Islamophobia network in America.” Another foundation singled out in the report, the Lynde and Harry
Bradley Foundation, has donated $325,000 to the AIC between 2005 and 2011. The Bradley Foundation is one the most generous donors to the American conservative movement, according to People for the American Way’s Right Wing Watch project, pumping millions into right-wing think tanks like the Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute, key bastions of neoconservativism. It has also supported the work of Charles Murray, a right-wing author who notoriously argued in his 1994 book, The Bell Curve, that intelligence was based on race, and that blacks and Latinos were genetically inferior to whites and Asians. Some of the most virulent anti-Muslim agitators, from David Horowitz to Frank Gaffney to Daniel Pipes, who has called for razing entire Palestinian villages and other forms of collective punishment, have received more than $5 million from the Bradley Foundation. Aided by Adelson In 2009, the AIC received a $95,500 donation from the Adelson Family Foundation, the charitable entity of Las Vegas casino baron Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam. Adelson is best known for his attempts to unseat President Barack Obama through million dollar donations to the 2012 presidential campaign of Republican former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. A major donor to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) and the Birthright Israel program that sends Jewish American youth on free trips to Israel, Adelson is also a key financial benefactor of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s political career (“The Bibi Connection,” Al Akhbar English, 12 January 2012). In December 2011, Adelson told a Birthright Israel group that Palestinians were “an invented people.” “Don’t let Muslim student organizations take over the campuses,” he urged the Jewish college students. Adelson has never explained his funding of the AIC, perhaps the only Muslim-oriented recipient of his donations (“Sheldon Adelson to Birthright group: Gingrich is right to call Palestinians ‘invented people,’” Haaretz, 26 December 2011).

CAIR-MD Criticizes Senator Ben Cardin for Discriminatory Bill Recently CAIR-MD submitted a major Op-Ed to the Baltimore Sun criticizing Senator Ben Cardin for co-sponsoring a bill in the US Senate that would codify into US law discrimination against American Muslims and Arab-Americans. We proudly co-wrote this piece with Jewish Voice For Peace and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee. We are pleased to report that it was published by the Baltimore Sun and gained wide national attention. You can take a look at the article by clicking here. Don't Let Israel Discriminate Against Americans Based On Religion Bill on visa waivers for Israel would allow it to keep out those it suspects for any reason — including their religion By Zainab Chaudry, Saqib Ali, Shelley Fudge and Abed Ayoub April 29, 2013 A bill has been introduced in the U.S. Senate that would allow a foreign country, Israel, to discriminate against select groups of American citizens — including Americans who have expressed criticism of its policies. Disappointingly, the bill, S.B. 462 (also known as the U.S.-Israel Strategic Partnership Act of 2013), is co-sponsored by Maryland Sen. Ben Cardin. Those who stand to be most affected by this piece of legislation are Arab Americans and Muslim Americans. However, it may also apply to individuals who wish to visit or work in Israel and/or the Palestinian territories that Israel has occupied since 1967. It would enshrine into U.S. law a provision allowing another country to discriminate against Americans based on their ethnicity or religion. The purported intent of the bill, originally introduced by Sens. Barbara Boxer (a California Democrat) and Roy Blount (a Missouri Republican) at the behest of American Israel Political Action
....
Committee (AIPAC), is to provide Israel entry into the United States' visa waiver program, but with special allowances not afforded any other country. Normally, the visa waiver program permits, under certain conditions, foreign individuals to enter the United States without a visa. A key aspect of the program is reciprocity, meaning that countries admitted into this program must also permit Americans to enter their country without a visa. Currently, 37 countries participate in this mutually beneficial arrangement with the United States. All reciprocate by allowing American citizens to cross their borders without obtaining visas. H o w e v e r, S . B . 4 6 2 c o n t a i n s discriminatory provisions that allow Israel to bar entry to Americans of Arab heritage or Islamic faith, anyone who is viewed to be critical of the actions of the Israeli government, or even anyone who is supportive of Palestinian rights — this, while Israel would enjoy the full benefit of the program for its own people. Rather than requiring reciprocity, the bill, as drafted, requires only that Israel make "every reasonable effort" to ensure that reciprocal travel privileges are extended to all U.S. citizens. No other waiver
program nations are granted similar exemptions. Earlier this year, Nour Joudah, a 25-yearold Palestinian-American woman, was denied entry to Israel at Ben Gurion International Airport despite holding a valid one-year multiple-entrance visa. Ms. Joudah was a full-time English teacher at the Quaker Friends School in Ramallah who had traveled to Amman for the Christmas holidays. However, when she tried to return through Israel, she was denied entry. Numerous efforts by USAID representatives and congressional staffers to secure Ms. Joudah's re-entry were in vain. Ultimately, Ms. Nour had to inform her students via Skype that she could not return to Ramallah. The issue of entry denial has been contentious for decades. Israel is widely recognized for especially discriminating against Arab-Americans and Muslims by preventing or making difficult their entry to Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories. When Americans of these two groups arrive in one of Israel's ports of entry, they are often put through intense interrogations and strip searches, and in many cases are denied entry without any explanation. The State Department's website advises U.S. citizens "that all persons applying for entry to Israel, the West Bank, or Gaza are subject to security and police record checks by the Government of Israel, and may be denied entry or exit
without explanation." In 2006, thenSecretary of State Condoleezza Rice told Arab-Americans, "I will continue to do everything in my power to support your good work, and to ensure that all American travelers receive fair and equal treatment." Unfortunately, almost one decade later, its increasingly obvious that much work remains to be done on this front. On Senator Cardin's website, he states: "Civil rights and civil liberties are the building blocks of the rule of law in our country." We couldn't agree more. Senator Cardin has a history of championing civil rights. So it is ironic, disturbing and deeply disappointing that — at the behest of a foreign nation — he would try to chip away at the basic rights of the citizens of his own country. We strongly urge Senator Cardin to either promptly introduce amendments that would strike out discriminatory clauses of the Boxer/Blount bill, or publicly rescind his support for this offensive legislation that is in such stark contrast to American values. Zainab Chaudry (zchaudry@cair. com) is vice president of the Maryland chapter of the Council on AmericanIslamic Relations. Saqib Ali (sali@ cair.com) is the group's government affairs director. Also contributing to this article were Shelley Fudge, director of the Jewish Voice for Peace Washington D.C. Chapter and Abed Ayoub, the Arab-American Anti-Discrimination Committee's director of policy and legal affairs.

American civil rights organization told me that AIC’s leadership refused to participate in any initiative with the organized Muslim American community.
“It is either one or the other. We must either fight against terrorism or deem our silence as evidence of complicity” (“Statement on Terrorism,” 10 September 2004).
Of all the right-wing, pro-Israel donors to the AIC — and there are too many to mention here — none has been more generous than the Klarman Family Foundation, which provided the group with $425,000 from 2005 to 2011. The foundation is the charitable vehicle for Boston-based proIsrael billionaire Seth Klarman. He is the principal funder of The Israel Project, an Israeli government-linked public relations and lobbying group run by former AIPAC spokesperson Josh Block, which has, among other things, taken dozens of journalists on helicopter tours in Israel and the territories it occupies (“Israel Project brags on planting story in CNN and taking 38 journalists on helicopter trips in Israel,” Mondoweiss, 18 April 2013).
Described by his frequent host Glenn Beck as “the Muslim we were all looking for after 9/11,” Jasser starred in an Islamophobic propaganda film, The Third Jihad, warning that Muslims were organizing a takeover of the US through “demographic jihad.” He gained prominence as the lead Muslim witness in the congressional hearing on “Muslim radicalization” hosted by New York Republican Congressman Rep. Peter King, and has vehemently defended the New York Police Department’s profiling of Muslims.
Bush’s Iraqi fixer
Besides the AIC, Klarman has donated to a who’s who of anti-Muslim and pro-Israel groups, including the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), the American Jewish Committee, The David Project, Daniel Pipes’ Middle East Forum, and Friends of Ir David Inc., the US tax-exempt fundraising arm of the settler organization behind a wave of Palestinian expulsions in the occupied East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan. Klarman is also a major donor to Birthright Israel, AIPAC-founded think tank the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, and the pro-Israel neoconservative Foundation for the Defense of Democracies. The AIC is not the only putatively Muslim group funded by Klarman. In 2011, Klarman made his first donation to the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, the shell organization that serves as the personal platform for Zuhdi Jasser. The previously unknown Jasser, a physician from Arizona with no academic or theological credentials, is one of the country’s most outspoken Muslim proponents of law enforcement surveillance of Muslim communities. Two years earlier, Jasser was welcomed onto AIC’s board of directors, joining a host of like-minded neoconservatives. “Demographic jihad” Daniel Pipes, one of America’s foremost anti-Muslim activists, has promoted the AIC as one of the “moderate groups” presenting a counter-weight to Muslim organizations like the Council on AmericanIslamic Relations (CAIR), which he has repeatedly labeled as a front for a secret plot to place the US under the control of “sharia law.” A staffer for a major Muslim-
In October 2012, AIC director Zainab AlSuwaij signed a letter authored by Jasser and addressed to then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, urging her to bar Pakistani politician Imran Khan from entering the US (“AILC Press Release: Secretary Clinton should bar Imran Khan from entering the U.S.,” 23 October 2012). Jasser described Khan, one of Pakistan’s most outspoken opponents of US drone strikes, as “an anti-American politician who regularly defends the Taliban.” The letter contained the signatures of more than a dozen obscure Muslim figures, including Farid “Frank” Ghadry, a neoconservative favorite and AIPAC member who has attempted to promote himself, Ahmed Chalabi-style, as the future leader of a free Syria, including before the Israeli Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. Another neoconservative activist seated on the AIC’s board, Hillel Fradkin, is a scholar of Islamic studies who signed the notorious Project for the New American Century letter calling for the United States to overthrow Saddam Hussein. Then there is Khaleel Mohammed, a professor of religion at San Diego State University whose views have endeared him to hardline Islamophobes. A contributor to Daniel Pipes’ Middle East Quarterly, Mohammed argued in a friendly interview with David Horowitz’s far-right FrontPageMag that the Quran states that “Israel belongs to the Jews.” “Only when Muslims themselves accept Israel will they be following their Quran,” Mohammed claimed (“The Koran and the Jews,” 3 June 2004). Mohammed is the faculty advisor for AIC’s student group at San Diego State University, Project Nur, and to the school’s Graduate Program in Homeland Security. On his personal website, Mohammed declared that Muslims who did not rise up to fight “the world terrorists” were betraying their Islamic duty. “The Quran makes it absolutely clear that Muslims must bear arms against errant Muslims in times of need,” he wrote.
In August 2004, two years after she founded the AIC, Zainab Al-Suwaij appeared before the Republican National Convention to speak in support of George W. Bush’s re-election and the invasion of Iraq. “America, under the strong, compassionate leadership of President Bush, has given Iraqis the most precious gift any nation has ever given another — the gift of democracy and the freedom to determine its own future,” Suwaij proclaimed, according to a Fox News transcript. Al-Suwaij was born into a Shiite family in Iraq that suffered under the regime of Saddam Hussein. When she appeared at the helm of the AIC just months after the 11 September 2001 attacks and with an invasion of Iraq on the way, her organization was little more than a shell, with no board of directors and only a little more than $12,000 in its coffers. By 2004, however, Al-Suwaij was earning six figures, with government contracts pouring into her organization along with requests from national media outlets. The US occupation of Iraq was propelling her ambition. On 21 March 2003, two days after the US invasion of Iraq began, Al-Suwaij appeared on ABC’s 20/20 alongside three other Iraqi women representing a now-defunct group called Women For Iraq. The women told host Barbara Walters that those protesting the invasion were “missing the point,” and thanked the US military for “freedom and liberty.” Days before, the four of them were invited to the White House to meet with a grateful Bush. The following year, Secretary of State Colin Powell announced a $10 million grant for women’s “democracy training” in Iraq. Much of the money went to the Independent Women’s Forum, a militantly anti-feminist Republican organization then run by Lynne Cheney, the wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, and originally founded as Women For Clarence Thomas — a support group for the embattled, ultra-conservative Supreme Court nominee. Two organizations were brought in on the mission as subcontractors: the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, the hard core neoconservative think tank currently promoting a US military assault on Iran, and the AIC. In 2004, the Bush administration funneled $542,123 to the AIC; a year later, the Independent Women’s Forum paid the AIC $533,052 in State Department grants to serve as its “subcontractor” in Iraq. In
2006, the AIC received $465,780 in compensation from the Independent Women’s Forum for its work. According to IRS 990 information returns filed by the AIC, hefty State Department grants poured in to the group’s coffers throughout Bush’s second term in office. An Independent Women’s Forum report on its work in Iraq contained few details about the concrete results it achieved. However, it hinted at a slew of embarrassing failures, including an Iraqi women’s conference held in Jordan in 2005 where participants arrived exhausted, famished and shellshocked after being shot at by unnamed assailants. According to the report, the women were not provided with the food or lodging they requested, and “providing and confirming flights for the participants in a very short period of time proved impossible” (“Advancing Women’s Rights - Two Years in Iraq” [PDF]). When Al-Suwaij attempted to open women’s centers in Basra and Karbala, local officials rebuked her — “this segment of the grant was never fully realized,” the report noted. A more successful forum organized through the AIC instructed Iraqis in Nasiriyah on “coughing into one’s elbow instead of into one’s hand, and other basic health concepts.” Despite having participated in a dubious mission that was widely criticized as right-wing political patronage, the AIC has maintained a steady stream of government funding since Barack Obama entered the White House. In 2009, the AIC received more than $433,000 from the State Department to conduct conflict resolution programs in Iraq, claiming to have “diffused 60 conflicts” in the country. Two years later, it reaped $1.28 million in government funding for Iraqi conflict resolution and to train “social entrepreneurs” in Tunisia; over $170,000 of the government money was earmarked for democracy promotion. Today, the AIC maintains offices in Tunis and Cairo, both apparently supported by State Department grants. To help coordinate its efforts across the Middle East and at its gleaming new cultural center in Boston, the AIC has turned to social media activist Nasser Weddady. “Democracy, secularism, fun” The son of a prominent Mauritanian diplomat and opposition politician, Weddady was hired by the AIC in 2007 as outreach director for the organization’s Hands Across the Mideast Support Alliance (HAMSA). HAMSA is overseen by Jesse

How the Salah Came to Our Ummah On the Night of Mi'raaj QuESTIon: I have heard that during the early years of Islam, Muslims were told to perform 40 prayers a day, but this was cut down by 5 each time because Allah knew this was unachievable by the majority of Muslims until only 5 salat a day were left. Is this because Allah has shown us mercy? AnSwER: Praise be to Allaah. What you have heard about the prayer is not correct. The correct version is that Allaah initially – on the night of the Mi’raaj when our Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was taken up into heaven – enjoined fifty prayers to be performed night and day. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) kept asking his Lord
to reduce it until it became five prayers to be offered night and day. But Allaah decreed the reward of fifty prayers for these five, so whoever prays five prayers will receive the reward of fifty prayers. It was narrated that Anas ibn Maalik said: Abu Dharr narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The roof of my house was split open when I was in Makkah, and Jibreel (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) came down and split open my chest and washed it with Zamzam water. Then he brought a golden vessel filled with wisdom and faith and poured it into my chest, then he sealed it. Then he took me by the hand and ascended with me into the lowest heaven. When I reached the lowest heaven Jibreel said to the gatekeeper, ‘Open up!’ He
said, ‘Who is this?’ He said, ‘Jibreel.’ He said, ‘Is there anyone with you?’ He said, ‘Yes, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is with me.’ He said, ‘Has his mission begun?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ And when it was opened we went up into the lowest heaven… Then Allaah enjoined upon my ummah fifty prayers, and I came back until I passed by Moosa who said, ‘What has Allaah enjoined upon your ummah?’ I said, ‘He has enjoined fifty prayers.’ He said, ‘Go back to your Lord, for your ummah will not be able to bear that.’ So I went back and He reduced it. Then I came back to Moosa and said, ‘He has reduced it.’ He said, ‘Go back to your Lord, for your ummah will not be able to bear that.’ So I went back and He reduced it further. Then I came back to Moosa and said, ‘He has reduced it further.’ He said, ‘Go
back to your Lord, for your ummah will not be able to bear that.’ So I went back and He said, ‘(The prayers) are five but (the reward) is fifty. The Sentence that comes from Me cannot be changed [cf. Qaaf 50:29].’ Then I went back to Moosa and he said, ‘Go back to your Lord.’ But I said, ‘I feel shy before my Lord.’…” – Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 342; Muslim, 163 Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar said: What is meant is that they are five with regard to what is to be done, but they are fifty with regard to the reward. – Fath al-Baari, 1/463 And Allaah knows best. Characteristics of the Month of Rajab The month of Rajab is the seventh month in the twelve month Islamic (Hijri) lunar calendar. The word rajab is derived from the word tarjib, which, in Arabic, indicates glorification. The reason behind this name may be the high esteem Arabs used to confer upon this month. The Sacred Rajab The month of Rajab is also called Rajab Al-Haram (Arabic for: the Sacred Rajab), because it is one of the four Sacred Months, during which fighting is prohibited. This was a customary and traditional practice used to be observed for ages. The glorious Qur'an referred to the Sacred Months in Surat of AtTawbah, in which Almighty Allah says, [Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them, four are Sacred. That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves
........
therein) (At-Tawbah 9:36).
Rajab Mudar
These Sacred Months are Dhul-Qi`dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab. That is why Allah's Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Time has come back to its original state, which it had when Allah created the heavens and the earth. The year is twelve months, of which four are sacred: Three are in succession, namely, Dhul-Qi`dah, DhulHijjah, and Muharram, and (the fourth one) Rajab (of the tribe of) Mudar, which is between Jumada (Thani) and Sha`ban."
Rajab has another name, which is Rajab Mudar, according to a hadith in which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "And (the fourth one) Rajab (of the tribe of) Mudar, which is between Jumada (Thani) and Sha`ban." Mudar is an Arab tribe and Rajab is named after it, because that tribe used to give much respect to this month and protect its sanctity.
The Solitary Rajab
Rajab witnessed the occurrence of AlIsraa' and Al-Mi`raj, the miraculous night journey and the Prophet's ascension to the heavens, with which Almighty Allah honored Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
The month of Rajab is also called Rajab Al-Fard (Arabic for: the Solitary Rajab) because it is separated from the other three successive Sacred months, namely, Dhul-Qi`dah, Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram; Rajab comes five months after them.
Month of Al-Israa' and Al-Mi`raj
In reference to this journey, Almighty Allah states, [Glorified be He [Allah] Who took His servant [Prophet
Muhammad[ for a journey by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haram [at Makkah] to the farthest mosque [Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem], the neighborhood whereof We have blessed, in order that We might show him [Muhammad[ of Our signs. Verily, He [Allah] is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer) (Al-Israa' 17:1). The Qur'an refers to Al-Mi`raj (Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam's ascension to the heavens): [While he [Angel Gabriel)] was in the highest part of the horizon. He approached and came closer and was at a distance of two bows' length or (even) nearer. So did [Allah] convey the Inspiration to His servant [Prophet Muhammad]. The (Prophet's) heart lied not (in seeing) what he (Muhammad) saw. Will you then dispute with him about

Sage, a protégé of hardline anti-Muslim activist Charles Jacobs, who hired him to direct the American Anti-Slavery Group that spearheaded a nationwide Sudan divestment campaign. Weddady boasts on his bio that he has briefed the Boston Joint Terrorism Task Force, a division of the FBI, and claims to speak five languages fluently, including Spanish, French and Hebrew. A profile of Weddady by Karen Leigh in The Atlantic describes him as a hidden force behind the Arab revolts — “an activist quietly pulling strings from Boston.” According to Leigh, Weddady is among the “top four most-influential Twitter users of the Arab Spring uprisings” and “is networked in every country in the region.” Leigh went on to claim “Weddady’s network” was largely responsible for the release of several activists jailed in Syria and Egypt during the Arab uprisings (“Behind the Arab Revolts, an Activist Quietly Pulling Strings From Boston,” 25 January 2012). One of Weddady’s most high-profile projects is the “Dream Deferred Essay Contest.” With approximately $58,000 in grants since 2005 from the Earhart Foundation, a right-wing charity best known for funding conservative efforts to unravel affirmative action programs for minority students in the US, the “Dreams Deferred” competition has doled out cash prizes to Arab youth for essays detailing repression and cultural problems like female genital mutilation in their countries. Among the winners selected by a panel chaired by famed American feminist Gloria Steinem was Maikel Nabil Sanad, an Egyptian antimilitary conscription activist who told Israel’s Ynet “I am pro-Israel,” and who supported Israel’s brutal assault on the Gaza Strip in 2008-09, blaming Palestinians for provoking Israel “to defend itself” (“Egyptian refusenik: I’m pro-Israel,” 25 October 2010). In 2012, Palgrave Macmillan published an anthology of “Dreams Deferred” contest winners co-edited by Weddady and called Arab Spring Dreams. The book earned a glowing review from The Times of Israel, the Israeli publication financed by top AIC funder Seth Klarman. The blogger iPouya offered a less charitable critique, accusing the authors of committing a multitude of embarrassing factual errors. Weddady co-edited the anthology with one of the neoconservative movement’s rising stars — Sohrab Ahmari, an Iranian-Amer-
ican former fellow at the right-wing Henry Jackson Society, and assistant books editor at The Wall Street Journal, who has been described by MJ Rosenberg at The Huffington Post as “the neocons’ favorite Iranian” (“Neocons Do Not Speak for IranianAmericans,” 27 March 2012). Ahmari is a vocal proponent of a US military strike on Iran to precipitate regime change, a position he advocated last year in an article for Commentary (“Can Iran Be Saved?” March 2012). In the introduction to their book, Weddady and Ahmari explain their decision to exclude the Palestinian narrative from the anthology on the grounds that “a [Palestinian] state there, or a treaty here, are of little consequence to the Middle East’s struggle for civil rights.” While speaking on a panel at the American Jewish Committee’s 2012 national conference in Washington, DC, Ahmari argued that the US “should try to actively shape the outcomes of the Arab Spring. In other words, we don’t have the opportunity to be humble and stay away from the region and favor all actors equally,” he stated, as video of the event shows. “… What needs to happen from the Western perspective is to be equally engaged, morally and militarily, to make sure the Arab Spring reflects our preferences rather than Tehran’s.” Views like these have found an occasional home at Free Arabs, the website co-founded by Weddady. Described as a forum for Arab liberals who “confront both oppressive autocrats and religious zealots with audacious reporting,” the website’s launch generated a wave of online criticism and debate. Many critics pointed at “The Fatwa Show,” a comical portrayal of ultra-conservative Muslim sheikhs who issue absurd edicts against high heels and body hair. Others homed in on “The Horrific 4,” a narrative series aiming to “push to an extreme the worse [sic] prejudices seen in the Arab world, sometimes with a satirical tone.” No satire was apparent, however, when “Yehudi,” a fictional Mizrahi Jew from Israel who appeared as part of the series, claimed, “we Middle Eastern Jews [living in Israel] … are the most free Arabs in the world” (“Mizrahi Jews are the ultimate pan-Arabs,” 24 October 2012). Without a trace of irony, Yehudi added: “Yes, we Middle Eastern Jews in Israel are the ultimate pan-Arabs — and we are free to explore that cross-cultural mix and blaze new identities in one of the most experimental societies in the world.” Free Arabs states on its website that it was born from “a network of creative next-
generation Arab activists facilitated by the American Islamic Congress, backed by a small grant from the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee.” Until 8 May, Free Arabs listed as a sponsor Stanford University’s Program on Arab Reform and Democracy at the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law, where the Moroccan journalist Ahmed Benchemsi — a co-founder of Free Arabs — serves as a visiting scholar. The Stanford program that houses Benchemsi is overseen by Hoover Institution Senior Fellow Larry Diamond, a liberal interventionist academic and former senior advisor to the Coalition Provisional Authority that governed the US occupation of Iraq. Diamond emerged as a critic of the war after the occupation turned into a bloodstained boondoggle, but maintained that the invasion was just (“What went wrong in Iraq,” Foreign Affairs, September-October 2004). Almost a decade later, with the Arab revolts in flux, he sees new opportunities for the exercise of hard American power. In a recent commentary for The Atlantic, Diamond and Stanford’s Lina Khatib argued for US military intervention in Syria, warning that the failure to intervene would have “catastrophic consequences for regional stability and for the position of the United States in the Middle East” (“The Case for Intervening in Syria,” 25 April 2012). Three days later, Free Arabs republished Diamond and Khatib’s piece, headlining it, “Syria - No More Excuses!” Around this time, Weddady was busy organizing a 2 May panel discussion at AIC’s Boston cultural center that would be co-hosted by the the leading pro-Israel advocacy group the American Jewish Committee. Themed as “A New Vision of Muslim-Jewish Relations,” the event’s keynote speaker was Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. Built into the original scaffolding of Bush’s imperial project, the AIC emerged unscathed from its dramatic collapse, finding favor in a new era among Obama’s top allies. As Washington grasps for strategies to influence the course of the Arab revolts, Weddady and his colleagues are earning new opportunities, and ample compensation.
