Community News Altaf Husain Chosen as 2015 Social Work Educator By Muslim Link Staff

March was a blessed month for Dr Altaf Husain, a familiar face to many DC Metro Muslims. The D.C. Metro Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) selected Dr Altaf Husain as the 2015 Social Work Educator. He was also promoted to Associate Professor at Howard University with tenure.

“As an aspiring and hopefully emerging scholar, the Educator of the Year award provided me a strong sense of reassurance that the scholarly and research agenda I am pursuing is resonating with students and fellow faculty colleagues. I see this award not as a culmination of efforts rather a reminder to continue to pursue teaching and scholarly excellence,” said Dr. Husain.

According to a Howard University announcement, Dr Husain serves as the chair of the Community, Administration and Policy Practice concentration in the School of Social Work. He is also a research fellow at the Center for the Study of American Muslims of the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding and the Center for Global Health. His tenure at the University includes various positions across campus including in the Office of the Provost and Chief Academic Officer as Executive Assistant for Academic Affairs,

in the Office of the Dean of the Chapel as a member of the Interfaith Fellowship Advisory Council, and currently as a

member of the University’s committee to develop the Periodic Review Report. Dr. Husain is also an adjunct faculty member

Time Has Come for a Muslim Cooperative, Says Maryum Center Maryland Islamic Center, located in Ellicott City, has launched an exploratory venture of developing a Muslim Business Community and Social Hub. Recent growth of its school and other programs, not to mention the Muslim community in general, has revealed that the time is ripe to move forward with an inclusive plan that will meet the social, business, spiritual and educational needs of the community. Still in the planning stage, Maryum Center's members have formed a task force to spread the word regionally and to search for affordable buildings and sites where the cooperative hub can begin.

Beyond just a mosque and a school, the concept of this cooperative was generated with the idea that one large space would meet a multitude of needs for the local community including halal shops, sister's beauty salons, separate private gyms for sisters and brothers, a clinic, medical and business offices, as well as a play area for children while moms and dads shop or exercise. Established businesses in an expansion mode, as well as weekend kiosks are envisioned with a'sook' type environment that would invite and welcome the nonMuslim community as well. Imagine starting ones day at the cooperative in the gym, followed by breakfast or lunch

at one of the several eateries offering mouth-watering American, middle east or African cuisine, and completing the trip by shopping at several of the halal shops and specialty shops to purchase meat, spices, or a variety of sweets and treats freshly made on site.

Islamic Center invites interested 'home' business owners, established business owners/aspirants, inquiring community members and families to become involved in this cooperative venture.

An immediate major project is the development of a central Muslim business directory to attract and invite Muslim businesses to join this cooperative. The cooperative would create a shared commerce, social, worship and educational space that would support individual, family and community efforts.

MD Youth Visit Annapolis as Part of Leadership Symposium By Muslim Link Staff On Wednesday, April 8, 2015, over 30 Maryland youth took part in the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation's largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, first Maryland Muslim Youth Leadership Symposium (#MYLS2015) to held in Annapolis, MD. The symposium was designed to familiarize participants with the Maryland

General Assembly and the legislative process of how a bill is introduced and passed into law. The Muslim Community Center sponsored ten youth leaders to attend the symposium, and youth from various schools, both public and private, attended from Al Huda School, ICM, Dar al Taqwa, PGMA, ICCL as well as ethnic organizations met at the state capital and sat in a live committee session.

Led by CAIR Maryland Outreach Manager Zainab Chaudry and a core group of team leaders and chaperones, Muslim youth toured state buildings and learned from dynamic speakers who will aimed to inspire and ‘empower them to guide their communities from the margins to the mainstream of society, and to provide resources to foster a wellintegrated American Muslim identity that flourishes in a pluralistic America.’

Education is a big issue for Karim and the residents of Hyattsville, as decisions for local schools are made by officials situated far away and are not always the best for the residents. Central county government also controls education tax dollars.

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Talib Karim is knocking on doors, a lot of them. Karim comes from a line of advocates and is now running himself, for Hyattsville city council-Ward 1. His father, Dr. Talib Karim Muhammad was one of the first American Muslims elected to the Memphis City council in 1996. This district was created following Dr. Muhammad's successful voting rights lawsuit against the City of Memphis’ election system. In 1988, Dr. Talib Karim Muhammad filed a class-action suit in Memphis challenging at-large city-wide seats on the council. This gave access to African Americans who, Muhammad and other critics charged, were historically prevented from their proper share of representation. The lawsuit was incorporated in the Justice Department's action. After living in DC, Karim and his wife (also a lawyer) and their three children moved to Hyattsville, four years ago. They have been active in their neighborhood with cleanups, inviting neighbors into their home, doing what neighbors are supposed to in the Prophetic tradition. “I recently introduced two neighbors to each other who had lived next to each other for 6 years but had never spoken to each other,” says Karim. As a city council man he hopes to increase activities designed

to bring residents of Hyattsville together to foster a greater sense of community, increase public safety, and inspire a spirit of neighborliness. Being a Muslim naturally gives him an advantage as a candidate, he says. “My day starts early after morning prayers and I use that time to put up yard signs and catch neighbors as they leave to drop their children off to school,” he explains. Islamic work ethics make him a diligent and resourceful candidate. When Candace Cullingham asked Karim to help her in her re-election campaign, Karim gave her a tongue in cheek answer. “You run for mayor and I’ll run for your position.” Several others had approached Cullingham to run for mayor and she went for it. Now she is running uncontested for the mayor of Hyattsville. Karim is a contender for her empty spot on the city

council. “ We n e e d a s y s t e m a t i c c h a n g e in this country to address economic stratification,” says Karim when asked about residents concerns about the effects of gentrification in the city. Everyone, rich and poor, deserves to live in neighborhoods that are clean and safe with good schools and decent city services. Hyattsville is am economically diverse community. Karim plans on pushing for increased city services such as improved parking, new parks, and additional retail outlets, particularly along Route 1. “These services could be funded through attracting tech businesses to a Hyattsville “Innovation District” to complement our city's “Arts District,”” he explains to supporters. His son attends the local high school.

He hopes to urge the city to invest more in STEM/STEAM education programs to equip local children with skills to prepare them for jobs in the nation's science and tech driven economy. Allowing training from K-12 and beyond for residents, and tapping into tech resources and coupling that with a tech corridor for Route 1 will help alleviate many problems in the area. An active Facebook page with nearly 230 likes keeps him connected to his future constituents. The election is on May 5, 2015. “Over that time I've worked to build bonds with my neighbors through community cleanups, neighborhood discussions, and gatherings to bring neighbors together. “In addition, I helped judge science projects at Hyattsville Elementary STEM fair. I've also had numerous discussions with city leaders and neighbors about strategies for developing vacant properties along Route 1,” he adds. Imam of Masjid Al-Haram to Judge ADAMS Qur'an Competition By Muslim Link Staff ADAMS Center in Sterling will host a national Quran competition —Voices of the Quran— on May 9-10, 2015. Winners will have the chance to recite to one of the imams of the Masjid of Makkah Mukarramah, Sheikh Mahir Al-Mueaqly. Sheikh Maahir was born in Madinah, where he memorized the Quran and was taught by Madinian

scholars. He also attended the Umm al Qura U n i v e r s i t y. He became internationally known for his qiraah after his temporary stint as the imam of masjid al Nabawi.

Prizes include Umrah trips, a laptop, a tablet and winners may qualify for a chance to compete in the international Quran competition. Registration fees cost $25 per participant. Participants under the age of 30 can take part in the contest. There are two categories of contestantsone for memorization and another for those contestants who will read from the Quran, with proper Tajweed.

Quran competitions bring a variety of communities together in friendly competition, spurred by the love of the Quran and become local traditions. One such competition is the Annual Central Virginia Quran Competition held at the Islamic Center of Virginia (ICVA). This year it celebrated it’s 10th anniversary on the 21st of March with participants from several states and even Europe.

Rally Held in DC to Demand Independent Medical Team for Aafia Siddiqui By Muslim Link Staff Since the beginning of this year, Mauri Saalakhan has been traversing the east coast, talking about a "most important" protest in front of the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Washington DC on behalf of Aafia Siddiqui. On March 30, 2015, his efforts and energy resulted in a rally of about two dozen people, half of which were journalists and co-sponsor representatives. and the Islamic State reportedly offered to exchange prisoners is not a popular role. Siddiqui, 41, is the Pakistani born, American educated neuroscientist who disappeared along with her three young children in Pakistan on March 30, 2003. She reappeared in a weakened and metally compromised state on the streets of Ghazni, Afghanistan in July of 2008. Her supporters and indepenent researchers and journalists say there is ample evidence Siddiqui was held and tortured at the Bagram prison complex for five years. The notorious detention center was controlled by the United States at that time. Siddiqui was tried in New York for attempting to "murder US personnel" and convicted. A federal judge sentenced her to 86 years without the possibility of parole. Mauri Saalakhan is her most vocal and active supporter in the United States. He is also her most lonely. Saalakhan goes from city to city, masjid to masjid, and convention to convention with posters and banners calling for "Justice for Aafia" and "12 Years Too Long", but the organizations who respond are few. The outspoken Saalakhan names names, chastising the nation's large Islamic organizations for what he says is unconscionable silence. At the MArch 30 rally, Saalakhan stood in front of a large banner that said "free Aafia Siddiqui". Addressing the small gathering which was mostly non-Pakistani, he started with a background on the case, and mentioned that former US Attorney General Ramsey Clark called Aafia's case "the worst case of injustice he had ever seen." Saalakhan said the purpose of the rally was to demand the Federal Bureau of Prisons allow an "independent medical team" including Aafia's sister Dr. Fawzia Siddiqui to examine Aafia's physical and mental health. Aafia's family has had very little contact with her, and activists say the Bureau of Prisons is very uncooperative and is withholding information about Siddiqui. Imam Abdullah Faaruuq, the leader

of the Masijd for Praising Allah in Roxbury, Massachusettes, traveled down to the Washington DC area for the rally. Faaruuq, who knew Aafia personally when she was a young Islamic activist in the Boston area, gave a talk at the Prince George's Muslim Association (PGMA) entitled "The Aafia I Knew" the evening before the rally. "I call upon Allah, that He gives the United States government a message, because they aren't listening," said Imam Faaruuq. Calling Aafia's case an example

of "inhumanity", the Imam -- who also read a statement from Imam Siraj Wahaj and the leadership of the Muslim Alliance of North America (MANA). Jamal al-Labani, a resident of Oakland, CA, who had gone to visit his wife and young child in Yemen was killed on Thursday, April 2, 2015, as he walked home from the masjid. Many people are too afraid to leave their homes to go to work, scared they will not make it back alive. Money transfers are becoming impossible as is humanitarian aid. “Very few humanitarian actors have stayed in the country, while the needs are actually getting greater and so more supplies and human resources are required on the ground,” Dounia Dekhili, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) programme manager for Yemen, said in a statement. In a secular country like the United States, headlines will often accuse public schools across the country of propagating Islam at the expense of Christianity. Last year, Kevin Wood received a no trespassing order after he objected to his daughter being taught about Islam in La Plata High School in Maryland. La Plata High School officials said that the class only taught Islam as it relates to the history and politics of the Middle East and that Woods had threatened student safety. Texas is a particular hotspot for textbook controversy. According to the Brookings Institute paper, ‘people worry their governments are doing too little or too much to shape the spiritual beliefs of private citizens.’ Douglass asserts that negative attitudes toward

She expanded on the fact that there are about 200 Islamic schools in the United States which are funded by communities and tend to use public school texts for most subjects— even though they are not required to by law. The study refers to Islam as a confessional and nonconfessional subject and to confessional and nonconfessional textbooks. Islam can be taught as an academic subject with no truth claims or as a denominational subject teaching the religion as the Divine Truth. Berglund uses the term Islamic education

Finland and Netherlands have parallel paths for religious education within the school system— these big Muslim minorities have the right to start religious schools with public funds similar to Germany. There are 43 government funded Muslim primary schools and one secondary school in the Netherlands. New Finnish laws allow the teaching of Islam “within the state school system with a non-confessional curriculum, meaning that the IRE orientation in public schools is educational rather than religious,” if more than three Muslims students are in a school district and their parents request alternative religious education to Lutheran religious education.

UK and Sweden have been teaching Islam as a confessional subject since 1969, and this has just come under scrutiny in the past decade. In Sweden, there are 50 state funded schools and out of the hundreds of Islamic schools in the UK 12 are Muslim ‘faith schools’ sponsored by the government—along with this, Islam can not be taught as a confessional subject in other state schools. Textbooks were an issue for several teachers that Berglund interviewed for her research- some import them from other countries which bring a host of problems, others cut and paste from textbooks according to the values of the country that they live in. Berglund observed that each countries’ values played into how the Islamic education classes were structured and run; for example, gender segregation is off limits in Sweden but is a norm in the United Kingdom with its historical legacy of gender segregated schools. The US model for textbooks is like ‘making sausage’, says Douglass, the default standard evolved around world history. Islam is never taught in isolation and is taught with Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, even Greek mythology, etc. In the past many state standards molded themselves around the textbooks but others dictated the standard to textbooks companies. According to Douglass, some groups have put pressure what gets in and what doesn’t and there is a whole activist cottage industry that has grown up around that in the United States. Textbooks in the United States are academically reviewed, reviewed by teachers and by civil organizations such as the First Amendment Center. Douglass has been involved with the review process for decades. She says, California was the leader in the country— teaching units on all major religions. Douglass emphasized that teaching Islam in public schools was not in response to 9/11 but already institutionalized and is not exceptional. “As Western nations grapple with the role of religion in

civic life, they will need to clarify how education on religion relates to the secular nation-state and its objectives while taking into account the needs of citizens to find a basis for living constructively within a common civic space,” writes Douglass.. She explained the history of Islam being taught as an academic subject from the 50s to current time and noted that post 9/11 interest in Islamic religious education has risen even though the right has existed since the 50s.

Schools are socializing future citizens, molding them into what the state wants to see in the society, writes Berglund. In Finland, state policy allows for state funds be used to publish Islamic textbooks in Finnish— including a confessional textbook that is funded by the government for the 40,000 Muslims living in the country. Islam in each country is diverse and the policies vary according to the national political culture of each country, as well as the historical and religious norms that shape public perceptions and debates over religious education. Berglund notes that strategies differ in ‘similar’ countries according to their beliefs about social cohesion, Swedes believe that teaching the same course about a religion to all students breaks down prejudices, whereas the Finnish believe

She says schools can only benefit by teaching religion as their adherents understand it rather than editorializing the religion through the secular humanist lens. This practice makes practitioners of religion suspicious of the authenticity of what is being taught. She said many Christians have brought up this issue, especially at the collegiate level. Noting the variety in approaches in the

Most parents want educated and good teachers for their children. This leads to many more discussions on what is a good teacher, what should be taught and how the trainings would work without government dictating the “right” kind of Islam. Douglass told the Muslim Link that she hopes that Berglund’s research will discredit anti-Muslim claims about Islamic education in the United States. There has been a lot of nonsense printed in newspapers and blogs and Berglund’s paper sets a marker and will prevent these ideas from gaining traction, says Douglass. McCants, who has served as a U.S. State Department senior adviser for countering violent extremism, called Berglund’s paper one of the more comprehensive studies on teaching about Islam as a religion in publicly funded schools. In her research, Berglund notes two points of interest: in many European countries, equal rights for minorities has allowed Muslims to obtain state funding for religious schools, introduce Islamic religious education in public education, train teachers of Islam, and establish university departments of Islamic theology. While this may seem beneficial to Muslim communities, the other side of the coin (as Berglund calls it) is “the tendency to use the public funding of education as a coercive means of achieving social cohesion— i.e., as a way to mold the conduct and thinking of Muslim populations to cohere with the conduct and thinking of the Western majority populations.” These findings should make many in Muslim communities put their thinking caps on.

Sure, we could fill up our tiny tub with about 20 gallons of water, jam ourselves in there, and splash away like most Americans who use about that much for the 10 or so minutes it takes to shower. But we don't because 5 gallons is more than plenty to get yourself dirt-free. You really think Rasulullah (sallalaahu alaihi wa salaam) used more than that? Narrated

Anas: “The Prophet (sallalaahu alaihi wa salaam) used to take a bath with one saa', or up to five mudds, of water, and used to perform ablution with one mudd of water.” (Sahih al-Bukhari) And what are most folks doing? According to bakkah.net a saa' equals about 3 liters, and a mudd is about .75 liters. So our Prophet didn't even use a full gallon to bathe! Long time ago, people were used to the ritual of “the Saturday night bath.” For homesteaders who don't yet have the modern luxury of in-house water plumbed right into the tub, it isn't much different. First, you take your bucket out to the water pump, then carefully haul it back to the house, being careful not to give the pathway a good watering on your way back in. Next, you put it up on the wood stove to heat up...you did remember to start the fire in the wood stove, didn't you? Okay, so while the water's heating up you get your bathing fixings ready: bucket, pitcher, scrubbie of choice, towel and soap. My husband makes 100% extra virgin olive oil soap, so we haven't had to purchase namebrand soap in four years. The trick to bathing with a bucket is to use the water judiciously. (Keep in mind that we're talking about a general clean-up here, not the specific steps for the ghusl of janaba or jum'ah.) So you wet your body first, using the pitcher to dip water from the bucket to pour

right off the bat by not letting a faucet or shower head run continuously. Then grab your soap and bubble up! Rinse yourself again with the pitcher a few more times and, tayyib, you're done! Fairly neat, sweet, and you've conserved

American Muslim Attempts to Give Athan in All 50 States By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter On April 3, 2015, one American Muslim started his journey to attempt to become the first person to call the athan in all fifty states. Called “Project Muaddhin” is the history making trip by Jameel Syed from Auburn Hills, Michigan. He intends to share the beauty of Islam, stopping to collect stories in each state, making the Adhan and delivering the Last Sermon of the Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam at each stop. He isthe CEO of the marketing firm Fluidvisions, a youth sports mentor and a the author of a book, 99 Scenarios: Business in the American Muslim Sector, set to be released this year. "I made my intention to become the first Muaddhin (caller of the Adhan) in history to make the Adhan in all fifty states across America. It’ll be a journey that gives the international Muslim community the opportunity to dictate the terms of their own narrative across the world. Instead of reacting to headlines, they’ll be creating their own by building a positive story around the community,” said Syed.

Starting from the Tawheed Center in Farmington Hills, MI, Syed will visit the ADAMS Center in Sterling, VA and Islamic Community Center of Laurel (ICCL) in Maryland on Friday, April 10, 2015. Youth from the area are looking forward to an adhan competition arranged by ICCL that Syed will judge, along with Imam Javid. So far, Syed visited Oakland University in Rochester, MI for an MSA Banquet, Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids, in Iowa, and the Islamic Foundation of Villa Park in Illinios.

The Grand Canyon and Harry Potter World in Orlando are also on the schedule. He is accompanied by Yahya Sultan of Push Brand Marketing, who is handling all of Project Muaddhin’s social media, trip management and filming. They are hyped by all the wonderful people they are meeting and connecting with. This very American tradition of driving across the United States will be a world record, but for Syed it is also a spiritual journey to gain the pleasure of Allah.

“I want to be a part of the legacy,” he said on his choice of reading the universal Farewell Sermon, which he says is the antidote to the many ills of society. It is a simple solution to a complex problem, said Syed. Project Muaddhin will also collect adhans of different muaddhins from each state and compile the journey into a documentary.

If a new study on religious trends is to be believed, many of those robot-controlled cars will stop and park at mosques and churches. Yes, despite predictions that religion will go the way of dinosaurs, the size of almost every major faith -- sorry, Buddhists -- will increase in the next 40 years, according to a study released Thursday by the Pew Research Center. The biggest winners, Pew predicts, will be Islam and Christianity. Islam, the world's fastest-growing faith, will

left 43 dead, 1,189 injured and more than 2,000 buildings destroyed. I came to realize that the Lew Alcindor everyone was cheering wasn’t really the person they imagined. They wanted me to be the clean-cut example of racial equality. The poster boy for how anybody from any background — regardless of race, religion or economic standing — could achieve the American dream. To them, I was the living proof that racism was a myth. I knew better. Being 7-foot-2 and athletic got me there, not a level playing field of equal opportunity. But I was also fighting a strict upbringing of trying to please those in authority. My father was a cop with a set of rules, I attended a Catholic school with priests and nuns with more rules, and I played basketball for coaches who had even more rules. Rebellion was not an option. Still, I was discontented. Growing up in the 1960s, I wasn’t exposed to many black role models. I admired Martin Luther King Jr. for his selfless courage and Shaft for kicking ass and getting the girl. Otherwise, the white public’s consensus seemed to be that blacks weren’t much good. They were either needy downtrodden folks who required white people’s help to get the rights they were due or radical troublemakers wanting to take away white homes and jobs and daughters. The “good ones” were happy entertainers, either in show business or sports, who were expected to show gratitude for their good fortune. I knew this reality was somehow wrong — that something had to change. I just didn’t know what it meant for me. Much of my early awakening came from reading “The Autobiography of Malcolm X” as a freshman. I was riveted by Malcolm’s story of how he came to realize that he was the victim of institutional racism that had imprisoned him long before he landed in an actual prison. That’s exactly how I felt: imprisoned by an image of who I was supposed to be. The first thing he did was push aside the Baptist religion that his parents had brought him up in and study Islam. To him, Christianity was a foundation of the white culture responsible for enslaving blacks and

supporting the racism that permeated society. His family was attacked by the Christianity-spouting Ku Klux Klan, and his home was burned by the KKK splinter group the Black Legion.

condoned enslaving native people and stealing their lands. And while I realize that many Christians risked their lives and families to fight slavery and that it would not have been ended without them, I found it hard to align myself with the cultural institutions that had turned a blind eye to such outrageous behavior in direct violation of their most sacred beliefs. The adoption of a new name was an extension of my rejection of all things in my life that related to the enslavement of my family and people. Alcindor was a French planter in the West Indies who owned my ancestors. My forebears were Yoruba people, from present day Nigeria. Keeping the name of my family’s slave master seemed somehow to dishonor them. His name felt like a branded scar of shame. My devotion to Islam was absolute. I even agreed to marry a woman whom Hammas suggested for me, despite my strong feelings for another woman. Ever the team player, I did as “Coach” Hammas recommended. I also followed his advice not to invite my parents to the wedding — a mistake that took me more than a decade to rectify. Although I had my doubts about some of Hammas’ instruction, I rationalized them away because of the great spiritual fulfillment I was experiencing. But my independent spirit finally emerged. Not content to receive all my religious knowledge from one man, I pursued my own studies. I soon found that I disagreed with some of Hammas’ teachings about the Quran, and we parted ways. In 1973, I traveled to Libya and Saudi Arabia to learn enough Arabic to study the Quran on my own. I emerged from this pilgrimage with my beliefs clarified and my faith renewed. From that year to this, I have never wavered or regretted my decision to convert to Islam. I was adding my voice to the civil rights movement by denouncing the legacy of slavery and the religious institutions that had supported it. That made it more political than I had intended and distracted from what was, for me, a much more personal journey. Many people are born into their religion. For them it is mostly a matter of legacy and convenience. Their belief is based on faith, not just in the teachings of the religion but also in the acceptance of that religion from their family and culture. For the person who converts, it is a matter of fierce conviction and defiance. Our belief is based on a combination of faith and logic because we need a powerful reason to abandon the traditions of our families and community to embrace beliefs foreign to both. Conversion is a risky business because it can result in losing family, friends and community support.

AlMaghrib Seminar: Deception - A Study of Shaytan Some fans still call me Lew, then seem annoyed when I ignore them. They don’t understand that their lack of respect for my spiritual choice is insulting. It’s as if they see me as a toy action figure, existing solely to decorate their world as they see fit, rather than as an individual with his own life. Kermit the Frog famously complained, “It’s not easy being green.” Try being Muslim in America. According to a Pew Research Center poll on attitudes about major religious groups, the U.S. public has the least regard for Muslims — slightly less than it has for atheists — even though Islam is the third-largest faith in America. The acts of aggression, terrorism and inhumanity committed by those claiming to be Muslims have made the rest of the world afraid of us. Without really knowing the peaceful practices of most of the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims, they see only the worst examples. Part of my conversion to Islam is accepting the responsibility to teach others about my religion, not to convert them but to co-exist with them through mutual respect, support and peace. (It's possible that Muslims outnumbered Christians some time in the past, perhaps during the Black Plague that decimated Europe. But scholars aren't certain.) Based in Washington, Pew is a nonpartisan "fact tank" that regularly produces sweeping surveys of this kind without taking public policy positions. Six years in the making, its study collected data from 234 countries and territories to predict the fate of five major faiths -- Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Judaism and Islam -- as well as folk religions and the religiously unaffiliated, including atheists. The study, which Pew says is the first of its kind, bases its projections on the age of populations, fertility and mortality rates, as well as migration and conversion patterns. Simply put, Muslims are having larger families, retaining more members (conversions are illegal in some Muslim nations) and are younger than adherents of other faiths. More than 1 in 3 Muslims is younger than 15. But religious trends have never been measured on the study's vast scale, Pew says, so a few cautions are in order. First, the population projections are based on current data and assumptions about demographic trends. For example, Muslim women have an average of three children, the highest of any religious group. In the future, if education and employment rates rise, those numbers could change. Second, nobody at Pew has a crystal ball, so events like cataclysmic wars, rampaging diseases, natural disasters and economic meltdowns could throw the numbers off. But it's clear from the 245-page report that Pew and the demographic experts they consulted did their homework, so the study is worth taking seriously. With that in mind, here are some of the study's top findings about what the world will look like -- at least, faith-wise -- in 2050. -- Atheists, agnostics and religiously unaffiliated people will increase in the United States (from 16% to 26%) but decline as a share of the total worldwide population.

Rejoice In the Success of Others By Sheikh Salman Al-Oadah When someone speaks to me about an old friend of theirs and boasts about their achievements and good qualities, I do not feel jealous. I realise that there is room in life for many good achievers, and indeed the world needs more of them. You benefit the most when your heart is conditioned to rejoice in the success of others. Feel free to praise people’s achievements in moderation and pray to Allah to bless them. Even if you do not know them personally, the least you can do is to be pleased with the attention they receive. Say: “This is what Allah has willed. It is His grace that He gives to whom He pleases. May Allah accept their good works and may He bless their efforts.” Yo u s h o u l d n e v e r f e e l t h a t t h e i r achievements impede your success, but rather that they complement and support it. No one on ever receives the sustenance Allah intends for someone else. There are as many opportunities as there are people on Earth. It would not be an exaggeration to say that there are opportunities for every breath that we take, if we had the initiative. Nothing makes life exciting like competing in achieving good things. The Qur’an calls us to this. Allah says: “So for this let the competitors compete.” [Sūrah alMutaffifīn: 26] The competition referred to in this verse refers to the wholesome resolve in the heart that takes place before the actions people can see. It relates to the strength of our connection with Allah, the sincerity of our intentions, and our goodwill towards others. These are hidden matters of the heart that few of us strive to excel our fellow people in attaining, though this is the real competition. These qualities of the heart are the difference between competition and rivalry. Bakr b. `Abd Allah al-Muzanī said about the first Caliph: “Abū Bakr did not give preference to people because of how much they prayed or fasted, but he did so on account of something in their hearts.” The best competition is to excel others in the purity of your heart. People rarely compete in this way because it is not visible to the public. All those who receive praise in this world eventually pass away. All that remains is their account with their Lord. Usually, their renown fades from memory until they are all but forgotten in this world. Indeed, many

people will never even have heard of them to begin with. The dead do not defend their reputations and they do not argue for their beliefs. They do not counter the objections that people raise against them. Yet, it may be that their silence is more eloquent than the words of their living detractors. When a person with whom I had a passing acquaintance passed on into the next life, people began hinting at his shortcomings. Now, no one on Earth is without faults. Only the prophets are protected from gross error. Nevertheless, people insisted on alluding to this person’s mistakes. Upon hearing all of this, I looked into my heart and found that I felt a small degree of contentment! I wanted to know more! How could I get them to tell me what they were hinting at without asking them outright? What is that person’s big mistake? Then I told myself that the shortcomings they are referring to are just like my own. This is why I feel such contentment. I don’t feel so alone. Others suffer from the same shortcomings that I do. There is nothing strange about me. At this point, I sought Allah’s refuge from Satan’s whisperings and asked Allah to bless and forgive the deceased. I blamed myself for two things in this experience: First, I blamed myself for letting people hint at that person’s mistakes without voicing my objection, simply because I did not know that person very well. I should have done so, because Allah says: “And those who strive for Our sake, We will surely guide them to Our ways, and indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.” [Sūrah al-`Ankabūt: 69] I also blamed myself for feeling any satisfaction in people hinting at someone’s shortcomings, and moreover s person who did a lot of good in his life, simply because it made me feel better about my own deficiencies. I began asking myself: Though I do feel happy when the virtues of good people are mentioned, why do I not equally feel sorrow when their shortcomings are mentioned? I admit that I am better off than I would be if I felt joy at their shortcomings, which I think is a most despicable trait. I am also better off than I would be if I felt sorrow at hearing about their good qualities or hoped for their failure, which would be worst of all. Allah says: “Or do they envy people for what Allah has given them from His grace?” [Sūrah al-Nisā’: 54] That is the fate of those who fall into error and then are content with their state. They repeat their mistakes over and over again and feel satisfaction knowing that other people are just like them.
