any misguided individuals.’ After a year worth of research, MPAC asks and answers the question: could more have been done by the community to intervene in the case of the Tsarnev brothers? The tool kit, which is available on the MPAC website, encourages communities to use the PIE model: Prevention, Intervention and Ejection.

Son of Late Qari Abdul-Basit Abdus-Samad Visits Dar Al-Taqwa to Raise Support for NY School By S. Junaid Hassan

Muslim Link Staff Reporter

With his hands placed on either side of his face, Qari Yasir Abdul Basit brought back memories of his late father, the world renowned Egyptian Qari Abdul Basit Abdul Samad. From the rapt attention his recitation garnered from the young in the audience, he was also introducing many to the beauty of Qur’anic recitation as well. Traveling with a delegation from Dar-ul-Uloom, New York, Qari Yasir was helping them raise funds for a number of initiatives they are in the process of expanding, from their (secular) academic curriculum to a weekend school for those unable to attend full-time. The fundraiser was held in the prayer hall at Masjid Dar-al-Taqwa in Columbia,

MD. With an initial crowd of a hundred attendees, a steady stream formed through the Friday evening as people getting off work across the region brought their families to experience in person what they had only heard before in audio recordings. Students from local Qur’an academies were also in attendance, along with many other youth whose parents wanted them to have a greater commitment to the Qur’an. The evening began with a recitation by Qari Safiullah Sherzadi, an instructor in Masjid Dar-al-Taqwa’s TAQI (Ta’leem Al-Qur’an Institute) program. Dr. Aamer Sheikh, Dar-al-Taqwa’s resident scholar, introduced the program. He reminded the audience, “On this blessed night we have visitors that have traveled from a far distance… I’m sure they don’t want it that the only time we get together is when they come to visit us. The purpose

of their visit is… so we get together on a regular basis.” Dr Sheikh then introduced the TAQI program, mentioning it among a number of programs in place at Dar-alTaqwa to help the community participate in the Masjid. The Chairman of the Daral-Taqwa Board of Trustees then spoke briefly, introducing Qari Yasir Abdul Basit.

Qari Yasir began his recitation in a style common to most people, gradually repeating his chosen verses with increasing complexity and variation of recitation styles, covering a range similar to his father. Barely a word was spoken across the room as he chose passages >> qari Pg 23

Frederick Masjid Uses Khutbah, Halaqas to Push Obama Care By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter As the sun set over the picturesque mountains in Frederick County, 50 people gathered for the weekly halaqa at the Islamic Society of Frederick. Instead of Imam Tareef who usually leads, this halaqa was run by Dr Wasimul Haque and Shifa Mohiuddin, MPH, an active member of ISF and an outreach volunteer with the American Muslim Health Professionals (AMHP) and focused on the Patient Protection and Affordable Health Care Act (PPACA) to educate the congregation. Mohiuddin says that a majority of Muslims in the area are self-employed and do not have access to afforable healthcare. “In order to make sure that Muslims are aware of the options available under Obama Care, AMHP [as a] part of a grassroots and national coalition has enrolled hundreds for healthcare coverage through the getcovered [sic] initiative,” she said. To facilitate enrollment, AMHP used the Jummah congregation to host Obama Care khutbahs across American masajid, including at ISF, to 11,000 attendees. The khutbah urged worshipers to protect one another, as ‘Allah calls us to protect the vulnerable, both in our own families and beyond.’ “They ask you as to what they should spend. Say: Whatever wealth you spend, it is for the parents and the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the wayfarer, and whatever good you do, God surely knows it.” (Qur’an 2:215). Using the preprepared khutbah, the khateebs mentioned that Allah calls us to seek health, well-being and good for all of creation, quoting the hadith: Your body has a right over you, your eye has a right over you, your wife has a right over you, and your visitor has a right over you” (Imam Nawawi 40 Hadith, Muslim). The khutbah was relevant and timely stating that ‘the needs of our nation’s more than 50 million people without health care coverage require a new and deeper level of concern, care and commitment to assuring that all have the

The navigator from the AACF noted that many congregants were recent immigrants, and did not watch mainstream news so were unaware of the deadlines. These ‘enrollment on wheels’ were set up across the state by different agencies, but to little practical benefit in the last days as the website, www. marylandhealthconnections.gov, was chronically slow. Those trying to register at the last minute were left as frustrated as those who tried when the website was first launched. Maryam*, an applicant waiting to register with a navigator at the Laurel Regional Hospital wondered why pen and paper applications were not accepted. “We tend to think healthcare for elderly, we tend to forget about the youth,“ said Dr Haque as he started his presentation by playing a video about the youth needing health insurance. According to Dr Haque, this legislation was needed, as insurance companies didn’t reform themselves for 40 years. He covered individual mandate, employers mandate and reduction of waste and fraud. One benefit pointed out was cost control. Insurance companies

As everyone will be required to have health insurance, just like car insurance the pool of money will be so big that people who really need the treatment receive it, he also pointed out that 69 percent of that money goes to 5 percent of the population, especially for end of life treatments. He informed the audience about the difference between Medicare, an insurance program (Medical bills are paid from trust funds, which those covered have paid into during their employment. It serves people over 65 primarily, regardless of income; and serves younger disabled people and dialysis patients), and Medicaid, a federal- state assistance program for low income families.

Dr Haque’s biggest concern was the way Accountability Healthcare Organizations (ACOs) were being set up, as ‘many things are uncertain about ACOs and the effect on patients.’ ACOs are newer payment reform models consisting of groups of doctors, hospitals, and other

According to Dr Haque, they are targeting primary care doctors in the Frederick area. 129 ACO companies already in exist in the nation. He went into great detail about elderly patient care and the effects it has on doctor ’s patient care records. “In Maryland if a patient is readmitted to a hospital within 30 days than the hospital doesn’t get a single penny,” said Dr Haque. Maryland has a unique system that is noted as a model for the rest of the nation, where instead of tying reimbursement to admissions, the new system gives hospitals a pool of dollars to treat a specific population that will grow in tandem with the state's economy.

Veteran Educator Takes Lead Education Role at PGMA By Hena Zuberi Muslim Link Staff Reporter A passion for model trains and inquisitive students is the perfect junction for retired educator A H Sharif Salim. Brought on board to manage the An Nur Academy and Hifz school at his local masjid – Prince George’s Muslim Association (PGMA) – as the Academic Director this year, he is joined by Sr. Nikeitha Brown, a PhD candidate in education. A little United Nations of ethnicities make up the hifz school boys at An Nur Academy: Abdil Muhaymin Chowdhury, 13, Abdul Malik Bah, 13, Sohbhan Hussain, 12, Mumin Odeh, 13, Mostafa Abker, 14. The projects inspired the boys to look into careers like engineering and architecture. “If you want to learn something, you should go to Br. [Salim],” chimes in

Chowdhury. The boys take a break from their memorization to spend a few hours twice a week with Salim. Salim has 40 years of experience as an educator and a mentor for young men. From the tough streets of DC to Roosevelt High School, Sharif is used to engineering schools in ‘dark territory’ without signals. He has served as a principal and viceprincipal in several middle and high

schools in DC and Maryland. He uses PIE (plan, implement and evaluate) and CASA —Clear expectations, Academic Rigor, Student led conversations and Accountability to Actions— to ballast his often distressed school assignments towards excellence. His vision was to see the hifz boys do projects that exemplified the principles they were learning in the Quran. The boys

worked on a project to build a model of a masjid based on the structure going up near the PGMA campus, the Turkish American Cultural Center. They plan on presenting the model to their neighbors when the center opens this year. Syrian Refugees DMV Bound: Is the Muslim Community Ready? By Christina Tobias-Nahi Muslim Link Contributing Writer

Salvador probably referred from the local government county office.

When the Syrians refugees come to resettle amongst us, will our community be ready? This is a question being pondered by many groups in the DC Metro area. To see what is being planned or currently offered in terms of services to newcomers, a few local organizations were contacted just to get the lay of the land and this is expected to be the first in a series of articles mapping the scene.

Indeed, for other masajid interested to organize classes there are funds made available each spring through Montgomery County Adult Education Literacy grants. The age range for this current ESL group is 15-70 years with the youngest is a refugee living locally with a host family. Also many of these students escaped a conflict in their home country so have never been to school at all or came from a country where women did not experience high level s of literacy so they are struggling just to learn basic study skills. While they pay a small course fee to MCC to cover instructors and course materials, there are also grants available from the county and in some limited cases from MCC directly. Once completing a session of classes, now 9 weeks long, students are able to attend free one-onone private tutoring with volunteer tutors.

First are the humanitarian organizations. According to Kyle Isma'il, Programs Manager at Islamic Relief USA, there are still “a lot of moving parts. While their mission is to respond, and thus they have not planned any concrete programming as of yet, they are staying in close contact with official resettlement agencies such as partners International Rescue Committee and Lutheran Social Services, who expect by 2016 to have an influx of asylum seekers. Islamic Relief is thinking to fill the need of identifying

....

donors interested in providing family sponsorship. Indeed refugees from the crisis who have already arrived through non-official, undocumented channels are already calling for financial assistance. Recently they had one call for a case of eleven people living in a 2 bedroom house and unable to work due to their status. One of the best ways to be able to get newcomers back on their feet is helping them find gainful employment. In order

for them to be hired though, they are going to need basic English skills. One local program already in existence to meet this need is the ESL Program at the Muslim Community Center (MCC) which holds two levels of classes, beginning and intermediate, on Sunday afternoons in their library. They have seen their enrollment double this spring, now with a class of 16 and while not from Syria, they are representing Bangladesh, Cambodia, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Pakistan, Sudan and even one non Muslim pupil from El

Al-Rahmah Student To Represent Baltimore at Scripps National Bee By Muslim Link Staff Reporters Danyah Imam, 13, faced her opponent at the Baltimore Spelling Bee and then spelled out the word E-N-B-A-Y-M-EN-T. “Embayment—it was the first time I had heard the word, but I picked [the spelling] up from the definition,” says Danyah. Her opponent cheered for her— her younger brother Shaheer, who was the 2012 champion from Baltimore and the youngest ever winner of the Baltimore Bee. This competitive logophile is headed to the Scripps National Spelling Bee at the end of May in Washington D.C.

“I wasn’t that nervous in the beginning, it got more exciting when my brother and I were the last two people on stage,” she quips. Its a family affair for the Imams. “In 3rd grade I didn’t know anything about the Spelling Bee. Then I saw my brother win. Last year, I won 2nd place and I really wanted to come in first and alhamdulillah I did,” declares Danyah. Danyah has been an Al Rahmah school student since kindergarten (homeschooled for 1st and 2nd grade). She devotes the majority of her extra time, after Quran, homework and projects to spelling words.

Her parents and siblings train with her. She has been studying from the dictionary as well as other lists, such as the Scripps word list. Learning the roots of words is really imprtant, she adds. Preparing for the nationals is serious business. “International competitiors come from all over the world. These are very brights kids who have been competing for a few years— this is her first time,” says Qaiser Imam, Danyah’s father, who keeps and eye out on competitions for his children to enter.

The 2014 Baltimore Science Fair (BSF) was held over the weekend of March 22 & 23, 2014 at Towson University at the Union Building. Two young women from the Muslim community received first place Sabahat Fatima, 14, in Division 1 (9-12 grade) and Danyah Imam, Division 2 (7-8 grade). Both are students at the Al Rahmah School in the Islamic Society of Baltimore where they both won the school Science Fair. Sabahat just completed the hifdh of the Quran under the tutelage of Ustadha Humaira, the wife of Qari Zahid at the Al Rahmah Quran Academy. She was homeschooled by her mother during this time, using the Calvert Homeschool program. “She started memorizing the Quran at a very early age—in Pre K— at the Noor ul Iman School in New Jersey and then at the integrated hifdh program at IANT Quranic Academy (IQA) in Dallas, TX,” says Sabahat’s mother, Salma Parveen. She gets back home at 6:30 after volunteering at the Al Rahmah Quran School. Karate, reviewing her hifdh and school work take up her time. Her parents wanted her to have exposure; they were not expecting that she would win so many awards at a regional event for her project, Catching the Sun with an Azimuth Solar Tracker. Her aim is to make an more efficient and cheaper version than those available in the market. AIAA has asked her write a proposal for funding to further her research. She will also present her project in November to the John Hopkins Young Professionals and students science conference held by AIAA. “From the time we entered the hall, I was praying that Sabahat [wins an] award...she was home schooled due to her enrollment into [the] full time hifz program and [I] always had the feeling that she missed out

“It was surprise I have been only to one science fair before this—it is a great blessing. I didn't expect this much!,” she says, excited. Her science teacher at Al Rahmah, Sr. Mehnaz encouraged Sabahat and told her that she had a chance. “I met many different people and won seven awards—it was really awesome experience.” “She is very ambitious and she wants to excel in whatever she does,” shares Salma. Sabahat thinks about college a lot. Interested in solar energy since the eighth grader, environmental engineering or policy are two options, that she is exploring, looking forward to a sunny future.

A Student Caught Praying By Aiyah Sibay

Stories Beneath the Shell News, April 5, 2014 It is 3:30 p.m., and one student is running late to class. She stops to pray in the side hallway of the Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Building, where she knows not many students will be passing through; she does not wish to be in anyone’s way. She places her bag before her to make sure that no one steals her laptop as she prays. She is doing no harm to anyone, but one individual thinks otherwise. A faculty member passing by calls the campus hotline to report suspicious behavior, and security officials from campus appear at the scene promptly. They ask her, “Were you praying?” And when she responds that she was, they ask to see her id, “to verify” they tell her. One of the officials at the scene apologized to her, acknowledging that it was ignorant

for one to report such a thing when we live in a “global world,” though they resume with the “standard procedure.” After a series of random questions, they return to the student her id, and confirm that “everything is good.” More than a week later, police enter this same student’s class around 12:45 p.m. They ask to speak to her, and they take her to the room across from her class. There, a detective and another police officer wait to question her. They begin as most interrogations do, with officers asking questions they already know the answers to, such as asking for her address. Again, they excuse their questions as simply part of the process of verifying the student’s information. At times when the student feels uncomfortable answering a certain question, they reassure her that they already know the answer. No one mentions the incident that happened the previous week until the student asks,

designated “couples time” to walk the resort grounds, sit by the shore, or just relax in each other's company, while each evening couples enjoyed a sumptuous, romantic dinner served to their 2-person table by waiters in the “Rekindle Your Marriage” private dining room. On Saturday night, the participants gathered in the last third of the night for qiyaamullayl, while on Sunday husbands and wives were encouraged to pray tahajjud in their rooms as a couple. Though most couples came from the Maryland-Virginia area, the sold out event attracted couples from places as far away as Chicago and even Nigeria. Couples are already inquiring about the next retreat, evidence that a weekend getaway to focus on rekindling our marriages is what many couples are looking for. The Heart Behind An Nur Montessori School A Montessori teacher acts more as a guide and facilitator rather than an instructor in the traditional sense. The child is free to move about the classroom at will, to talk to other children, to work with any of the equipment he or she understands, or to ask the teacher to introduce new materials to him or her. By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Allean Hart, the heart behind the An Nur Montessori at Prince George’s County Muslim Association, started her journey as an educator in the DC Public School system as a teacher’s assistant. Her students’ parents seeing her love for their children rallied to send her to school, to the Washington Montessori Institute, the oldest Association Montessori Internationale (AMI)-accredited training center in North America, so she could become AMI trained. The institute has since relocated to the Loyola University graduate center in Columbia, MD. “I grew up with neighborhood kids in our house all the time. My mother would

always have someone there for breakfast, lunch, dinner; she would take in the neighborhood kids who didn’t have adults looking after them,” says Alane as she speaks about her inspirational mother, who accepted Islam at the age of 93. As a teacher in the public montessori schools in the Capital, she would often copy the words of songs by Native Deen and have Eid announcements on the P. After 9/11 when other Muslims were scared of retaliation, she was confident as she had several ‘safe’ homes, around the school she used to teach in, where she could take her students, For years she worked at the Al Iman

an uncertain length of time. They may fluctuate markedly in both duration and intensity: for example where a patient has acute anxiety symptoms. In the short term, a single event may trigger dramatic changes to a number of risk factors, thus multiplying the overall risk. Dynamic current factors include mood disorders, depression, schizophrenia, drugs, alcohol, impulsivity, unemployment, single, widowed/divorced, illness, living alone, severe anxiety, social stresses, acute psychosis, family discord, breakup, and separation. Some other risks are if the person has a prolonged or calculated plan of killing oneself, exhibits farewell behavior, gives away belongings, makes a will, or has access to lethal means (weapons, noose, poison). Some prevention strategies suggested by Dr. Adelaja were education, restriction of access to lethal means and decreased media coverage, which glamorizes suicide as people tend to copy idols. According to Dr Azzaari, imam of PGMA who gave the Islamic perspective, suicide has been practiced since the time of the Holy Prophet, and is not a Western introduction. The Islamic fiqh definition is "intentional ending of one's life by one's own hands or by the help of others." “It is a frank violation and aggression against Allah, because you took away what He entrusted you with,” he said. According to the interpretation of a hadith the imam related from the Sahihayn, “In the nations before you, a man had a wound, it bothered him so much, he cut off his hand and bled until he died. Allah says, My servant hastened himself to Me." The imam relayed another narration when a man died in war, when the sahaba related

Najwa Awad, a clinical social worker with a practice in Howard County asked the audience what does a suicidal person look like? There are many warning signs including changes in mood, sleep habits, and hygiene. Family and friends can dialogue with the person contemplating suicide and do something about it. She noted that cutting is a sign of depression as it relieves stress and the person may not always be suicidal.

Cutting parts of the body like arms and wrists, a trend seen in many teenagers today, is a sign of depression as it relieves stress and the person may not always be suicidal. this to the Prophet, he sallahu alayhi wa sallam, said he will be in hellfire. His wounds were hurting so much, that he cut his life short with a sword. In essence, Islam prohibits feelings of helplessness and hopelessness from the mercy of Allah. Punishment for suicide is the hellfire

Teens tend to get violent, act out, run away risking isolation from family and friends, irritability increases and grades and appearance often suffer. There are spikes in alcohol and drug use. Adult display different symptoms, such as depression, staying in bed, decrease in

obligations and partake in alcohol or prescription overuse. Ameedah Rashid, a Licensed Social Worker in Maryland and the District of Columbia, and a Clinically Certified Juvenile Treatment Specialist spoke about how the Muslim community can respond to suicide. One of her key points was to keep connected with other individuals and to destigmatize mental health issues. The experts emphasized that it was imperative that friends inform parents from a health and Islamic point of view. If a person thinks a friend and family member is about commit suicide should call 911 and let the police take the person to a hospital to seek help. Being a good friend and listening can help someone who is teetering on the edge. It is best to seek help from professional counselors. Guilt tripping a person is not the way to go, neither is lashing out in anger. Awad gave information about mobile crisis unit, which is available in all counties, which will send clinicians out to people in imminent risk. Umme Maryam, who attended the event, says that it was a very informative and eye-opening seminar. “We learnt a lot about mental health issues that we were not aware of, especially how important it is for the community to reach out to people who are going through a troubled phase in their lives— people seriously need help.”

mental health counselors and legal experts that can intervene when an individual is going down the path of extreme violence. Planning is crucial as material support laws – federal laws which are used heavily in terrorism related trials to convict people who

dealing with far right extremism, such as the Southern Poverty Law Center. MPAC believes the best approach when faced with individuals that espouse a violent ideology, based on the best scientific evidence, is similar to how schools and universities across the nation prevent violent tragedies such as Columbine High School and Virginia Tech University shootings. According to the toolkit, in those cases, schools formed teams of teachers, counselors and other staff to identify problems and alternative solutions to arrest, such as counseling. That method has been effective, preventing 120 incidents of violence in the past decade. These cases are not reported in media.

Beutal says that experts have noted that a lack of trust and an environment of silence may actually encourage troubled individuals ‘to go down a path of violence because they will be less likely to get help, such as mental health counseling.

The toolkit suggests that masajid should have safe spaces where sensitive or taboo subjects can be discussed in a ‘comfortable and non-judgmental atmosphere.’ This should include discussions about religious and civic identities, concerns over national and foreign policies, sectarianism, etc. However, in the aftermath of the NYPD spying, some communities are concerned that these discussions could be used by federal agencies to entrap young men.

In cases where ideology and religious misguidance are a major factor in a person’s movement toward violence, MPAC suggests that communities ‘take the lead role’ with four basic principles, in addressing extremist ideologies and helping people exit from violent groups:

One of the concerns of masjid leaders is the necessity for such a dialogue. Is this issue such a big problem or are our civil right organizations just dancing to the official governmental tunes? In a tele-seminar conducted by Haris Tarin and Alejandro J. Beutel, the author of the toolkit, an independent consultant and former Government and Policy Analyst for MPAC, they addressed this concern. They say that they do not want to fan the flames of propaganda nor do they want to instill fear in religious spaces. Tarin says that it is not a huge issue, but the impact is very big; even one is too many. “Unfortunately, there is a very small, but dangerous minority of violent individuals who falsely claim to act on behalf of the interests and aspirations of all Muslims. In order to recruit people to their backward ideology, they prey on vulnerable and misguided members of our communities. Some of these individuals have gone on to do terrible things, such as carry out

In an op-ed Salam Marayati, the Executive Director of MPAC National writes: “We aim to prevent violent ideology with

a dose of good theology and healthy, honest conversations in our mosques. We then try to intervene with anyone who exemplifies troubling behavior. Finally, we resort to ejection from our mosques when all other measures are exhausted. In all cases of violent activity, we remind our constituents to call law enforcement. The precise mechanisms for these steps can be found in the community toolkit.” The publication discusses the planning and legal ramifications of interventions

Beutal emphasized that no money from any government was used to develop the Safe Spaces project; it was developed for American Muslims, by American Muslims and comes from a place of authenticity and independence. and the pros and cons of ejection of a violent person from a community. Beutal says that experts have noted that a lack of trust and an environment of silence may actually encourage troubled individuals ‘to go down a path of violence because they will be less likely to get help, such as mental health counseling. Those with the ability to provide help are also less likely to be aware of those who may need it.’ MPAC suggests that masajid, community centers and MSAs develop a Crisis Inquiry Team consisting of imams,

1. Listen 2. Understand the person’s references and sources 3. Provide the person comfort 4. Give alternatives and consistently follow up Many masajid and Islamic Centers are struggling for funding and do not have full time staff or the expertise to deal with such issues. Many Islamic Centers want to help, but do not have a model to follow. Tarin says the organization is cognizant of the state of masajid and that tabletop exercises and training through

MPAC does not involve high costs or experts to come in. A suggestion made by one activist at a March 2014 FBI outreach program at a local masjid was that intervention instead of prosecution and supplying of materials would have made for a better outcome in the 2010 case of 17-year-old Mohamed Osman Mohamud, was echoed in the MPAC toolkit. Mohamud was arrested and convicted of attempting to bomb a Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Portland, Oregon with materials supplied by law enforcement. Mohamud came from a broken home and had personal issues that led him to a path where he began supporting extreme ideologies, but had not yet committed an act of violence. MPAC notes that Mohamud’s father ‘noticing his son’s troublesome path, called the FBI, assuming that this was the only option. “In those circumstances, arrest and criminal prosecution were the only tools that were available. However, if people like Mohamud’s father have access to community-led initiatives that focus on prevention and intervention, then our communities and the nation will be safer and the community can avoid the trauma of the criminal justice system.” The Muslim Link asked MPAC what their stance was on law enforcement in local masajid. Tarin believes that Muslim communities should build trust with local law enforcement agencies, even if there is disagreement with some policies. Not down playing the civil liberties concerns that the American Muslim communities have, MPAC suggests that communication lines should be open and law enforcement should approach the community through the front door and not the back door -- spying and paying informants. Beutal emphasized that no money from any government was used to develop the Safe Spaces project; it was developed for American Muslims, by American Muslims and comes from a place of authenticity and independence. So far reaction to the initiative has been positive. A sustained effort by MPAC, the training offered will be local and community driven, not through law enforcement.

He challenged the audience to move beyond the standard dichotomous view of the two fields, saying that, “your child should not only be a doctor, he should be a doctor and a ‘Aalim (Scholar)”. Many agreed with this sentiment, with some admitting that the best, current method to reconcile the two was through a rigorous home-school program; the parents would exercise control over their children’s schedule, making certain neither of the two (Qur’anic learning and academic studies) suffered.

to more than 400 students today.” They have graduated 70 students so far who had memorized the entire Qur’an. A quarter of their students board on campus, and with 17 full-time instructors, ten of whom are devoted to the scholar program (the Aalim course). The Dar-ul-Uloom is in the stages of expanding its academic curriculum as well, among key developments, hence the fundraising efforts being undertaken.

Sh Abunar also mentioned a brief history of New York’s Dar-ul-Uloom. “We started with 4 students in 1997 and have grown

Dar-ul-Uloom, New York has led a vigorous fundraising campaign nationwide with the help of well-known Muslims over the past few years. Sheikh Hasan Abunar previously came on their behalf to Masjid Al-Rahmah in Baltimore to help fundraise along with Junaid Jamshed, a former singer-songwriter who is a popular for becoming an inspiration for many Muslims through his personal story, Islamic fashion, and charitable

The interrogation ends with the subject asking the officers to provide her with an excuse for why they called her out of class. They tell her to say she was called because she was a witness for a hit and run.

When I shared this incident with the Muslim Student Association on Facebook, Rabee Haq, senior individual studies major, commented, “I’ve prayed numerous times all over campus and never had a problem.”

The question hovering above this incident is clear: was this not an odd reaction to a student who simply prayed in a quiet hallway? And let us assume this student was praying in the oddest places on campus. Still, would this heightened response been necessary?

Haq was therefore understandably surprised to hear of the incident.

Thus, this incident must be addressed for a number of reasons, not the least of them being that this was an obvious inappropriate and offensive application of justice. For one, Muslims are constantly pressured to accept things which their religion demands they reject. Thus, to request acceptance from a sector of society, society must be willing to, in turn, grant acceptance to that sector as well. But we are increasingly seeing the latter used as a means of merely bringing about the former.

“I think this is definitely an exception,” he said. “UMD’s community is pretty welcoming.” And while this is a reassuring statement, it makes this incident all the more incomprehensible, for it is a common conception among many Muslims that attend this university that they have the liberty to pray in almost any place on campus so long as they do not stand in anyone’s way. What then, made this student’s case exceptional? Could it be that a close-minded faculty member happened to cross her path at the wrong time? Or could it possibly be the location she chose to pray at? Certainly, it was on the minds of those who questioned her, for they insisted the subject knew something

works. Though this was the first fundraiser of its type to be held at Dar-al-Taqwa, the visitors from Dar-ul-Uloom NY were happy with their reception in the community, saying that they had felt welcomed at all levels. The local community also felt particularly happy as their special guest, Qari Yasir Abdul Basit, had come to Dar-al-Taqwa as his only place of visit in the entire Mid-Atlantic metro region. About $40,000 was raised with a final figure yet to be announced as all the pledges had not yet been tallied. May Allah bless the Scholars and Reciters that came to Dar-al-Taqwa, and help Darul-Uloom establish itself as a standardbearer for knowledge and character in the United States. Ameen.

of the area she chose to pray that she shouldn’t know. Pursuing this sort of conjecture may lead one to endless cul-desacs of unanswered questions. Perhaps it is not the answers to these possibilities that Muslims seek, but a renewed commitment from the university that it will uphold the same promises it made to attract Muslims, and people of other religions, to its campus. Maybe it is not an apology this student seeks, but an admission of their lapse of judgment in overestimating the seriousness of her praying publicly. And if none of these are offered, at least we were granted the opportunity to voice the silenced injustices that Muslims face all around the nation for simply carrying out their religious duties. >> continued from pg 1

Among the political leaders we met were Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Secretary General Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N), and a close advisor to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif; Siddique Al-Farooq, Press Secretary of the Central Secretariat of the Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N); Raja Zafar ul Haq (PML-N); Muhammad Talha Mahmood, Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee, Ministry of Interior. (Senator Mahmood was also one of the political officials who visited Aafia not long after she arrived at FMC Carswell in Fort Worth, Texas.) We also met with Minister of State Balighur Rahman and Pakistani Senator Mushahidullah Khan.

of Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui (Aafia’s sister) and two male members of the Pakistan-based Free Aafia Coalition. As I exited the terminal I encountered a large crowd of men and women who awaited my arrival. Members of the welcoming party draped garlands of flowers around my neck, while others threw rose petals, as I was guided to an area where a number of journalists were waiting to conduct the first interview of this American Muslim who had traveled thousands of miles on behalf of one of their citizens – a prisoner of war affectionately referred to as “the daughter of the nation.” We then traveled to the Siddiqui family home (in Karachi), where I met the family matriarch, Sr. Ismet, and Aafia’s two oldest children, Ahmad and Maryam. It was here that the first formal interview took place before a large number of print and broadcast reporters, accented by a large crowd of Aafia supporters (both male and female). The ensuing days would impress upon this writer just how fitting that moniker “Daughter of the nation” is, as everywhere we traveled Pakistanis from every conceivable demographic – from the poorest of the poor, to the most wealthy and well connected – knew who Aafia Siddiqui was, and expressed a deep empathy and urgency toward her plight. In the days to follow, Dr. Fowzia and I (accompanied by two or three other male Aafia supporters) traveled from Karachi to Islamabad and Lahore, all the way up north to Peshawar - speaking with writers, journalists, politicians, business leaders, and civil society activists. In addition to the meetings there were periodic impromptu public rallies that attracted a lot of attention and support, the largest of which took place in Peshawar where thousands of Aafia supporters (predominantly men) lined the streets to demand Aafia’s freedom and repatriation. After flying to Islamabad on Thursday we visited the South African Embassy, so that the Pakistan activists could apply for visas for the South Africa leg of the international mobilization (visas are not required for U.S. passport holders). Later we had lunch, and then it was off

to what for me was the most challenging (both mentally and physically) part of the mobilization – a “march” by pickup truck from Karachi to Lahore. A drive that would normally take about five hours ended up taking 12; because we stopped along the way several times for rallies that were organized by local leaders along the Punjab (who were given advance notice that we would be passing through). At the end of our sojourn through the Punjab by truck, we were provided with a sumptuous dinner at the home of a large family of Aafia supporters, surrounded by a larger number of additional Aafia supporters (local leaders and civil society activists). We finally arrived at our hotel in Lahore at about 1:30 in the morning. Needless to say, it was a difficult and inspiring journey. On Friday, March 7, the day began with a memorable visit to the Rakan Grammar School in Lahore, where a special program had been planned for us. The program began with a young female student's moving recitation of the Qur'an, followed by the powerful speeches that were delivered by a number of other students. One of the most memorable lines in one young sister's passionately delivered presentation was, "Did our fathers struggle to establish Pakistan so that our daughters could be sold?!" (It

is a rhetorical question that every selfrespecting person of Pakistani heritage should ponder.) From Rakan Grammar School we were off to the Lahore Press Club for a wellattended press conference. At every press club gathering during my visit (in Lahore, Islamabad and Peshawar) the core message was always the same. Dr. Fowzia Siddiqui would express her and her family's disappointment with a startling new revelation regarding the Pakistan government's questionable efforts to secure the release of Aafia through a European treaty (a revelation based on a communication from the Council of Europe, and a letter, in response, from the family's attorney, Tina Foster, addressed to Mr. Sartaj Aziz at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs). While I would emphasize the importance of the “Islamic Republic of Pakistan” doing all that it could to secure the return of its citizen – and of how Pakistan’s image, and its health and welfare as a nation-state, hung in the balance. The days to follow featured a whirl-wind of activities, involving meetings with a variety of men and women from varying walks of life, all deeply concerned with the welfare of this committed and imprisoned Muslimah, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui. We met with a large number of business

My most memorable experience in Islamabad was the invitation to present at a 35 year old think tank known as the Institute of Policy Studies. I was invited to speak on the topic “Terrorism: American Policy and People,” it was a well-attended and thought-provoking experience. Going into the session, I was very conscious of the US government’s long standing policy of sponsoring Muslims from America to go abroad and put a pretty face on Americanism – and of the consequent need (according to the Qur’an and Sunnah) to balance out that perceptual equation with truth and an aim toward justice. Needless to say, the presentation – rooted in both love and concern for the health and welfare of my own country of birth – was well received. While there is much more that I could say about the visit, that ended with a lovely farewell dinner at my hotel the night before I flew out of the country, this I believe should suffice to underscore the significance of this new beginning of an international effort that will eventually take us to several countries (insha’Allah). What is our goal? - To do all that we can to secure the release of our sister before March 30, 2015. May ALLAH Subhanahu wa ta'ala bless this humble effort, and bless Muslims in America to fulfill their part of this communal obligation. The estimated minimum cost for the building construction is $7 million and together with the cost of land development and Storm Water Management is $9 million. Iqbal Yousuf, the board of trustee in charge of fundraising, said that so far $3 million has been raised for ICM Islamic School, Youth, & Community Center “The largest donations we have received have been $10,000 and we only got few of those. This is truly a community project, made up of small donations from regular folks,” he said in an interview with the Muslim Link. ICM usually hosts fundraisers three times a year, one in spring, one in the beginning of Ramadan, and one in winter for this project. The fund raiser on the 27th night of Ramadan is dedicated to raising fund for Masjid operations.

ICM was incorporated on January 20, 1991, but came into existence in 1989 when congregational prayers were organized at the Bechtel Corporation building. The current location was purchased in 1995. The Gaston Gardens nursery was facing economical difficulties and was being auctioned off by the Small Business Association (SBA). A few brothers bid on the land, but despite good intentions they didn’t win the bid. With Allah’s permission, a few days later the winner decided that he didn’t want the property and SBA came back to ICM, accepting their offer of $750,000. The community had $200,000 and was committed to non-interest bearing financing. The SBA agreed to a zero interest loan and in a short period the land was paid off.

Currently, ICM offers five daily prayers, organizes 7 Jumah salah at six locations across Montgomery County and up to 10,000 people attend their Eid Salah. It has a very active social service program including distributing zakah to people in need from the whole DC Metro region. ICM has hired a dedicated social service worker to expand the services to community. It has a Sunday school with more than 400 students. Recently it launched ICM Quran Institute headed by Sheikh Khamis Hassanin. ICM together with Islamic Society of Frederick and Islamic Society of Western Maryland

Omair Ahmed started with his $10,000 donation. By 9:00 p.m. $60,000 was raised and that amount was nearly doubled by 9:30 p.m. Despite the sparse crowd, the community reached a solid milestone as the evening ended on the track to building one of the the largest Muslim community center in the North East.

National News From Pearland to Puerto Rico: Imam Abdullah Daniel Hernández By Wendy Díaz

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Imam Abdullah Daniel Hernández, known as Abdullah Danny by fellow New Jersey natives, presides over the Pearland Islamic Center in Pearland, Texas, an extension of the Islamic Society of Greater Houston (ISGH). Imam Abdullah, who converted to Islam in 1999, studied at Al Azhar University in Egypt from 2004-2007, completing five years’ worth of extensive coursework in Islamic Sciences. He is one of the few Hispanic imams in the United States, and like many other Spanish-speaking Muslims, he has dedicated himself to helping spread the message of Islam in his native language. Working closely with IslaminSpanish, also based in Houston, Imam Abdullah organizes events in Spanish at the Pearland masjid on a weekly basis, and also offers classes and support for Latinos. His efforts, however, are not only limited to his locality. Having been raised half his life also in Puerto Rico, he is now turning his attention back to his parents’ homeland. “In 2008, I became aware that some masajid (in Puerto Rico) would tell (Muslim) sisters that there is no place for them (to worship), and I decided to take the initiative to establish a place suitable for all,” said Imam Abdullah, “Instead of investing or using up community resources, or building a masjid to counter that issue, I decided to establish an Islamic learning center in Moca, Puerto Rico, with a multimedia library and educational materials conducive for onsite learning and live online web broadcasting, insha’Allah.” To carry out this endeavor, he set a deadline of March 2014. His plan drew the attention of other Islamic organizations after he launched an online fundraising campaign and began promoting the idea through social media platforms like Facebook. Each of the organizations, which included IslaminSpanish, WhyIslam, Hablamos

Islam, Radio Islámico, and Qays Designs, donated a generous share of educational materials, including CD’s, books, DVDs, and brochures. Modasty Designs, an Islamic clothing company, provided free prayer garments for women, as well. Imam Abdullah, with the support and approval of his community in Pearland, travelled with his mother, Gloria, also a Muslim convert, transporting all the donations in their luggage. During their stay, from March 3rd to the 8th, they met with family members and spoke to them about Islam and established the Islamic Learning Center of Moca, a rental property with a musalla, smart TV for live transmissions, and a library. They also had the opportunity to socialize with other Puerto Rican Muslims from all over the island. Imam Abdullah was introduced to Imam Zaid, who is originally from Jordan but has been living in Puerto Rico for 15 years. Imam Zaid is surprisingly the only imam in Puerto

Rico who speaks Spanish, although there are a total of 8 masajid on the tiny island which is smaller than the state of Rhode Island. All of the imams in Puerto Rico are Arab, and most services, including the Friday prayers are conducted in Arabic or English, save for Imam Zaid’s. Imam Abdullah had the unexpected chance to give a khutbah in “La Mezquita de Montehiedra,” or the Montehiedra Masjid, and he spoke about Islamic education and adhering to the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him. One community member said this was his first time seeing a Puerto Rican imam on the pulpit, something which made him proud and gave him motivation. Imam Abdullah says that imams that speak the language are much needed in Puerto Rico, as well as educational resources in Spanish. “One way to really get involved in the effort for Islam in Puerto Rico and Latin America is to support the organizations who are taking the time making the efforts to help Latin

American countries learn about Islam,” he said, “Such as IslamInSpanish, which produces multimedia for educating Latinos about Islam, HablamosIslam, which produces children’s books and videos about Islam, and WhyIslam, which produces dawah material that helps in Islamic propagation.” Through the webcasts in the Moca Learning Center, Spanish-speaking imams and students of knowledge will conduct classes for the Muslims in Puerto Rico in an ongoing effort to help foster understanding and promote Islam as a peaceful way of life. Imam Abdullah plans to travel again to the island to better assess the needs of the people and visit other Islamic centers, with Allah’s Permission. Arts & Entertainment These Birds Walk: Heart Wrenching and Hopeful By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Everyone in Karachi is running; running on a prayer. “These Birds Walk” is a hopeful ode to the resilience of the people of Karachi and one of its home-grown heroes, Abdul Sattar Edhi. Directed by the diaspora kids Bassam Tariq and Omar Mullick, the documentary film focuses on a home for runaway boys in Karachi run by the Edhi Foundation. They had originally set out for Karachi, Pakistan to make a film about Edhi himself, but once there, they were not able to. Edhi Sahab, as he is affectionately known, was not interested in a film about himself and said to them, ”I am an ordinary man, go look for me in ordinary people, you will find me.” So they did. In case you don’t know, Abdul Sattar Edhi is a humanitarian legend without an agenda, not even an ‘Islamic agenda’, and on the streets of Pakistan he commands respect. Not through political power, but through the services he and his wife provide to the poorest of the population; services that neither government nor nongovernment entities have provided for the past 60 years. He can walk the street and do the work that he is doing without being pushed or pulled into controversy. People trust him on the streets, and he provides critical services from the cradle to the grave. His orphanages have dropoff boxes for babies, and his ambulances recover the bodies of the dead. The Edhi Foundation is organic and fluid, and in the film is a reflection of the uniquely Pakistani way that it adapts in order to serve. Edhi’s work is happening, everyday, with every ambulance that leaves the Foundation’s 330 centers around the country, picking up the dead who can’t

afford funerals, or dropping off runaways to their homes, or feeding the hungry in Edhi Homes. This film is not a cry for pity, but a privileged glimpse into what’s happening from a position of empathy; Pakistanis taking care of their own. “They are doing just fine without us having made a film about them,” said Bassam Tariq. The film is a refreshing departure from most documentaries: no talking heads, no stats presented. The cinematography is simple, and it flows with the energy of Edhi’s work- unscripted, unassuming, running in wake of an ongoing story. Mullick captures Karachi’s essence from the first shot, desperate and free. He shows us the city as it is seldom seen; stunningly framing the section of Clifton Beach where the camels go home after the moneyed and the tourists have ridden them, panning the crowded streets with a dead body inside an Edhi car, cutting into the fringes of a megalopolis where the streets have no names, or power, or gas. “These Birds Walk” is made with the intimacy of an old friend, and through its closeness, humanizes the lives and energies of boys who run away from home and young men who bring them to a safe space. It is made with an aching love for the country where these people live. The film captures the universality of boyhood, even in poverty and darkness; and the longing for home, despite dysfunctional families. Tariq and Mullick say that the children are not as photographically aware as children here, so they forgot about the camera as they filmed, giving the audience an honest look at their days in the simple, clean home. Mullick says that it is a generational picture: there is a child, a young man and an aging humanitarian. We meet Omar, a young boy living in

Judge Dismisses Lawsuit Over Drone Strikes in Yemen that Killed American Anwar Al-Awlaki By Pete Yost

Associated Press, April 4, 2014 A federal judge on Friday dismissed a lawsuit against Obama administration officials for the 2011 drone-strike killings in Yemen of three U.S. citizens, including an al-Qaeda cleric. U.S. District Judge Rosemary Collyer said the case raises serious constitutional issues and is not easy to answer, but that “on these facts and under this circuit’s precedent,” the court will grant the Obama administration’s request. The suit was against then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, then-CIA Director David Petraeus and two commanders in the military’s Special Operations forces. Permitting a lawsuit against individual officials “under the circumstances of this case would impermissibly draw the court into ‘the heart of executive and military planning and deliberation,’ ” Collyer said. She said the suit would require the court to examine national security policy and

the military chain of command as well as operational combat decisions regarding the designation of targets and how best to counter threats to the United States. At oral arguments last July, the judge challenged the Obama administration’s position repeatedly, pointedly asking, “Where was the due process in this case?” for the now-dead U.S. citizens targeted in the drone attacks. When an administration lawyer said there were checks in place, including reviews done by the executive branch, Collyer said, “No, no, no, no, no” and declared that “the executive is not an effective check on the executive” when it comes to protecting constitutional rights. But in Friday’s ruling, it was clear that the administration’s arguments had a strong impact on the judge, who was appointed by President George W. Bush. The government argued that the issue is best left to Congress and the executive branch, not judges, and that courts have recognized that the defense of the nation should be left to those political branches.

Anwar al-Awlaki’s classification as a key leader raises fundamental questions regarding the conduct of armed conflict, Collyer’s 41-page opinion stated. The Constitution commits decision-making in this area to the president, as commander in chief, and to Congress, the judge said. U.S.-born al-Qaeda leader Awlaki and Samir Khan, an al-Qaeda propagandist, were killed in a drone strike in September 2011. Awlaki’s 16-year-old son, Abdulrahman, was killed the following month. The lawsuit was filed by Nasser alAwlaki — Anwar’s father and the teen’s grandfather — and by Sarah Khan, Samir Khan’s mother. Allowing a lawsuit against the individual officials “would hinder their ability in the future to act decisively and without hesitation in defense of U.S. interests,” Collyer added.

and execution of several attacks targeting U.S. and Western interests, including a 2009 attempt on Christmas Day on a Detroit-bound airliner and a 2010 plot against cargo planes. “The fact is that Anwar al-Awlaki was an active and exceedingly dangerous enemy of the United States, irrespective of his distance, location, and citizenship,” Collyer said. “As evidenced by his participation in the Christmas Day attack, Anwar al-Awlaki was able to persuade, direct and wage war against the United States from his location in Yemen, without being present on an official battlefield or in a hot war zone.” She said that the U.S. government moved against Awlaki as authorized by the defendants, and she said the officials acted in accordance with the Authorization for Use of Military Force, which was enacted by Congress after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The Muslims Are Coming!: Islamophobia, Extremism, and the Domestic War on Terror Arun Kundnani has written a sharp study of anti-Islam hysteria Robin Yassin-Kassab The Guardian, April 3, 2014 Arun Kundnani's book, vastly more intelligent than the usual "war on terror" verbiage, focuses on the war's domestic edge in Britain and America. His starting point is this: "Terrorism is not the product of radical politics but a symptom of political

....

impotence." The antidote therefore seems self-evident: "A strong, active and confident Muslim community enjoying its civic rights to the full." Yet policy on both sides of the Atlantic has ended by criminalising Muslim opinion, silencing speech and increasing social division. These results may make political violence more, not less, likely. The assumptions and silences of the counter-radicalisation industry end up telling us far more about particular ideological subsections of Anglo-American culture

than they do about the Muslims targeted. The two dominant security approaches to Muslim citizens described by Kundnani – "culturalist" and "reformist" – highlight ideology rather than sociopolitical grievances. Culturalism's best-known proponent is Bernard Lewis, Dick Cheney's favourite historian, who locates the problem as Islam itself, a totalitarian ideology-culture incompatible with democratic modernity. So Mitt Romney explains the vast divergence between Israeli and Palestinian

economies thus: "Culture makes all the difference" – and decades of occupation, ethnic cleansing and war make no difference at all. Writer Christopher Caldwell believes residents of the Paris banlieue rioted in 2005 because they were Muslims (although many weren't), and not because of unemployment, poor housing and police violence. Perhaps the silliest culturalist intervention was Martin Amis's essay "The Second Plane", where Amis breezily admitted he knew nothing of geopolitics but claimed authority nevertheless from his expertise in "masculinity" – 9/11

the shelter who consoles other boys by night and picks fights with them in the morning. The boys talk about God and family -a lot. Omar placates his friend, Shehr by reminding him that Allah loves him more than his mother. Islam is kneaded in the souls of Pakistanis and the elitist media does Pakistan no favors by misrepresenting this, notes Mullick. We later find out that Shehr ran away from hifdh school and his family is searching for him. The children are not forced to go home from the shelter. They don’t have to leave, even if their parents come to look for them. Shedding his day-time bravado, Omar oscillates between fear and hope as he tries to sleep on the floor of the shelter. Wondering whether he should was explained by Muslim sexual frustration. Such discourses are part of an influential tradition. In 1950s colonial Kenya, psychiatrist JC Carothers understood the Mau Mau uprising as "not political but psycho‑pathological". More charitable than culturalism, reformism identifies the problem as a perversion of Islamic doctrine. With General Petraeus's Iraqi "hearts and minds" campaign, reformism came to dominate the post-Rumsfeld Pentagon; what started in counter-insurgency was soon considered as relevant to Bradford as Basra. It involved an accumulation of anthropological "knowledge" through surveillance (David J Kilcullen describes counter-insurgency as "armed social science"), and it underlay the assumption of Obama's 2009 Cairo speech that positive recognition of moderate Muslim culture could solve political conflict. Qur'an-reading Tony Blair shared the notion that terrorism's "root cause" was "a doctrine of fanaticism". This focus on doctrine meant the state intervened to promote correct belief. Muslims were categorised as "extremists" or "moderates", although no link has been proved between extremist ideas and terrorist violence. The clumsy binarism sometimes went further – Salafis were extremist, Sufis were moderate – although most Salafis are quietists and some Sufis fight jihad against America. Those labelled moderate were quickly reclassified if they spoke out on foreign policy. The emphasis on ideology led to the criminalisation of certain ideologies, and to the

OPINION | 29 kill himself, he prays for his family in a haunting scene in candlelight,”Dear Allah tell me what to do.” Asad came to Edhi from the streets, abandoned by his parents. He is an ambulance driver for the foundation and a Pakistani version of the child protective services. With him, the filmmakers travel deep into the city, picking up overdosed dead bodies and returning children to their homes. Like an Urdu-speaking cowboy, he swaggers into Pashtun territory. “You don’t a tell Pathan that if he doesn't want his kid, that we will take him,” says Tariq, “especially if you are a Muhajir (migrant from India). Asad is a hero.” Tariq is referring to the scene when Asad- a Muhajir- is returning Rafiullah, a runaway boy from a large, very poor Pathan family, and tells his uncle not to beat him again in front of the entire neighborhood. The two ethnic communities often clash and these little nuances were so subtle that someone new crime of "glorifying terrorism" (as opposed to inciting violence). Increasingly, young Muslims were imprisoned for their reading matter. Thus the more liberal approach ended by assaulting liberal freedoms, and culture was transformed into a battlefield. By turning comparatively new (and by no means universal) values such as gender and sexual equality into icons of superior westernism, "liberalism became a form of identity politics". (Reformism is heavy with bleakly absurd contradiction. For the sake of cultural sensitivity in Ramadan, hunger-striking Guantánamo prisoners are force-fed only at night.) In one of several illuminating character sketches, Kundnani shows that the radicalisation of Yemeni-American Anwar al-Awlaki, killed by a US drone in 2011, involved no psychological crisis or theological shift (as the reformist literature would have it), but only experience of the war on terror, domestic and external, including his American-inspired arrest and abuse by Yemeni police. The preacher's newly violent language mirrored not the Qur'an so much as war on terror discourse itself. This failure to engage with the real roots of violent alienation has ramifications going far beyond security. Both culturalism and reformism neglect what Kundnani calls "the basic political question thrown up by multiculturalism: how can a common way of life, together with full participation from all parts of society, be created?" Those British Muslims who "ghettoised" didn't do so by choice but as a result of industrial collapse, discrimina-

who doesn't know the Pakistani political terrain would surely miss them. Just as desperate as the young boys he rescues, Asad fills his pain by cleaning up the violent street. The film also shows a respect for gender and women’s spaces in Pakistan. There are girls’ homes as well, but they are protected and inaccessible to men. “We would both die a slow personal death if we- for a minute- thought that we could see five minutes of the female experience and we could then make a statement about it,” says Mullick. Despite the minor appearances of women in the film, they make some of the most powerful moments- when the hafiz is returned to his family and his grandmother welcomes him home with tears and prayers for the Edhi folks. The women who serve lunch to the boys and make sure the place is squeaky clean, and then tory housing policies and the fear of racist violence. Identity politics was promoted and funded by local government in response to a 1970s radicalism (for instance the Asian Youth Movements, modelled on the Black Panthers), which linked antiracism to anti-capitalism. Home secretary Willie Whitelaw supported "ethnic" TV programming on the grounds that "if they don't get some outlet for their activities you are going to run yourself into much more trouble". Multiculturalism, then, was not a leftist plot but a conservative move bringing together the state and community "uncles" against a much more subversive alternative. And in the last decade, while "anti-terror" resources have flowed into Muslim communities, benefiting the usual gatekeepers and provoking the envy of equally deprived non-Muslim communities, young, alienated Muslims, as likely obsessed by the Illuminati as the caliphate, are deterred from speaking – and being challenged – in public. Kundnani provides detailed, well‑contextualised accounts of the entrapment of vulnerable African-American Muslims as well as the criminalisation of the (already traumatised) Minnesota Somali community (for its opposition to the USbacked Ethiopian invasion of Somalia). Arab-Americans, who had either identified as white or as a "model minority" (patriotic, bourgeois, less troublesome than black people or Latinos), suddenly found those options closing. In comedian Dean Obeidallah's words, "I go to bed September 10th white, wake up September 11th, I am an Arab." Anti-Muslim hysteria was whipped up by the media, the entertain-

the strong, abrasive appearance of Omar’s mother in the finale. The ending unfolds in such a way that its hard to believe that this is a documentary; and easy to forget that Mullick and Tariq and their cameras are on the same emotional ride that we are. I ask Tariq and Mullick if they felt this would have been a different movie had they gotten permission to film Edhi Sahab from day one. Tariq thinks the fluid cinematic quality wouldn’t be there as Edhi is in his eighties and no longer as mobile. He is still a very active part of the organization however, and at one point as Edhi was bathing some orphans he comes alive and asks, “Who will bathe them?” The real question is who will bathe them after Edhi passes on. Mullick and Tariq hope the film makes you want to go do something; to stop running and take whatever you have and answer your own deepest questions.

ment industry, and a state vocabulary that considered pipe bombs "weapons of mass destruction" when used by Muslims. AntiMuslim violence in America increased by 50% in 2010. The book closes with discussion of the new European far-right's embrace of Zionism – it is now Islamphobic rather than antisemitic. In "creeping-shari'a" scaremongering, the tropes of classical antisemitism are clear. Rightists "ascribe to Islam magical powers to secretly control western governments while at the same time [seeing it as] a backward seventh-century ideology whose followers constitute a dangerous underclass". In Britain the English Defence League was born; in the US a media-based Islamophobic campaign fed existent conservative movements. Both peddle varieties of the "Eurabia" conspiracy theory, whereby a corrupt European political class has signed the continent over to Muslim domination through immigration, birth rates and multiculturalism. At one extreme, this brand of "anti-terror" politics soon arrives at its own, Anders Breivik-style terrorism. Arun Kundnani is one of Britain's best political writers, neither hectoring nor drily academic but compelling and sharply intelligent. The Muslims Are Coming should be widely read, particularly by liberals who consider their own positions unassailable. "Neoconservatism invented the terror war," Kundnani writes, "but Obama liberalism normalised it, at which point, mainstream journalists stopped asking questions."

How Can We Increase the Love of the Prophet in Our Hearts? Peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him

Praise be to Allaah. The strength of love for the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is connected to the Muslim’s faith. When his faith increases, his love for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) increases. Loving the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is an act of obedience to Allaah and a means of drawing closer to Him. Loving the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is one of the obligatory duties in Islam. It was narrated that Anas said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “None of you truly believes until I am more beloved to him that his father, his child and all the people.” (Narrated by alBukhaari, 15; Muslim, 44) You can increase your love of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) by realizing the following: Firstly: he was sent by his Lord who chose him above all of creation to convey the religion of Allaah to mankind. Allaah chose him because He loved him and was pleased with him. If Allaah were not pleased with him, He would not have chosen him. So we must love the one whom Allaah loves and be pleased with the one with whom Allaah is pleased. We must realize that he is the close friend (khaleel) of Allaah and that close friendship is a higher status and it is the highest degree of love. It was narrated that Jundub said: I heard the Prophet (peace and bless-

....

ings of Allaah be upon him) say: “I declare before Allaah that I have no close friend (khaleel) from among you. Allaah has taken me as a close friend as he took Ibraaheem as a close friend. If I were to have taken a close friend from among my ummah, I would have taken Abu Bakr as a close friend.” (Narrated by Muslim, 532). Secondly: We should realize the high status to which Allaah has raised him,

sulted; the closest people to him disowned him and accused him of being a madman, a liar and a sorcerer. He fought the people in order to protect the religion so that it could reach us; they fought him, expelled him from his people and homeland, and gathered armies against him. Fourthly: We should follow the example of his companions who loved him deeply. They loved him more than wealth and sons, and more than

Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [ Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [ Allah to grant him] peace. (Al-Ahzab: 56) for he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is the best of mankind.

their own selves. There follow some examples of that:

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I will be the leader of mankind of the Day of Resurrection, the first whose grave will be opened, the first to intercede and the first to be asked to intercede.” (Narrated by Muslim, 2278)

It was narrated that Anas said: I saw the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) when the barber was cutting his hair and his companions were going around him wanting to ensure that his hair would fall only into someone’s hand. Narrated by Muslim, 2325

Thirdly: We should realize that he suffered trials and difficulties in order to bring Islam to us. We should remember that the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was persecuted, hit, slandered and in-

It was narrated that Anas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “On the Day of Uhud some of the people fled and left the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), but Abu Talhah stood before him covering him with a shield. Abu Talhah

was a powerful archer who broke two or three bows that day. When a man passed by carrying a quiver containing arrows, he would say: Give them to Abu Talhah. Whenever the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) raised his head to look at the people, Abu Talhah would say: O Prophet of Allaah, may my father and my mother be sacrificed for you, do not raise your head lest you be struck by an arrow shot by the enemy. My neck is before your neck.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3600; Muslim, 1811) Fifthly: You should follow his Sunnah in word and deed, so that his Sunnah is the path you follow in your whole life, and you put his words before any other words and put his command before everything else; and you should follow the ‘aqeedah (belief) of his noble Companions, and the ‘aqeedah of the Taabi’een who followed them, and the ‘aqeedah of those who followed their path until the present day, namely Ahl al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah, and avoid bid’ah (innovation), especially the Raafidis (Shi’ah), for their hearts are hardened against the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and they give their imams precedence over him and love them more than they love him. We ask Allaah to help us to love His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and to make him dearer to us than our children, parents, families and our own selves. And Allaah knows best.

Dealing with Oppression from Your Own Family Question: I grew up in a miserable life since my earliest age. My father was married to two women, his first wife and my mother. My oldest brother was in full control of the home. And he was an oppressor; no one could talk or even whisper in his presence. I am still unaware of the reason behind this. My father has left everything to him. Even my mother and my step mother, they cannot say a word or discuss him. When I was in my fourth or fifth year in school, my father divorced my mother. I have seen -since then- the woe by my eyes, I have seen all the colours of torment –by Allah-, reprimanded for the smallest mistakes. My brother and my step mother are hard-hearted with me. He hits me until I bleed. And my father does not at all care. My brothers and I have since grown up and started to work. My father sees my brothers as angels, and sees me as nothing, worthless. My brothers are arrogant, and they cut off ties with me, but I tried to keep the relationship strong. As they continued to treat me very badly, I cut off ties with them as well. I have tried to be close to my father but he insists on his unfair behaviours. I am suffering from this unfairness. I am depressed, I have no self confidence. What is the solution?. Praise be to Allaah. Firstly: The Decree of Allah

that “whatever befalls him could not have missed him, and whatever misses him could not have befallen him,” so he implements the means of attaining happiness and does what Allaah has enjoined upon him without falling short, and if Allaah does not decree good for him, then whatever befalls him is a test by means of which Allaah expiates his bad deeds and raises him in status. Secondly: Responding to Evil with Good The mistreatment that you have experienced at the hands of your father, his wife and your brother is something that is very hurtful when it happens, and it is something which indicates that the shaytaan has prevailed over the hearts and minds of those who respond to the command to do evil, and who are reluctant to do good. What you have done of seeking to uphold ties with them even though they cut you off is what you should have continued to do. You erred by cutting off ties with them. The Muslim seeks reward with Allaah for whatever befalls him of wrongdoing, and hopes to be rewarded for his patience by his Lord, may He be blessed and exalted. If this mistreatment comes from his parents or relatives, he does not cut off ties with them unless being close to them will affect his religious commitment. You should remember that Allaah will support you and help you if you uphold ties with them even though they cut you off.

Undoubtedly what you are suffering from is painful, and mistreatment from a relative is worse than the same kind of mistreatment from a stranger, but the Muslim who adheres to the beliefs of Ahl It was narrated from Abu al-Sunnah wa’l-Jamaa’ah knows Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased

with him) that a man said: O Messenger of Allaah, I have relatives with whom I try to keep in touch, but they cut me off. I treat them well, but they abuse me. I am patient and kind towards them, but they insult me. He said: “If you are as you say, then it is as if you are putting hot ashes in their mouths. Allaah will continue to support you as long as you continue to do that.” Narrated by Muslim (2558).

Shaykh Ibn Sa’di (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in his Tafseer (p. 558):

i.e., good deeds and acts of obedience that are done for the sake of Allaah, and evil deeds and acts of disobedience that anger Him and do not please him, are not equal. Kindness towards people and mistreatment of others are not equal, whether in and of themselves or in their qualities or in their consequences. “Is there Allaah has made this the etiquette any reward for good other than that is required of the Muslim good?” [al-Rahmaan 55:60]. with all people: he should be forbearing with the ignorant and Then He enjoined a specific type treat kindly those who mistreat of kindness, which is of a high him. praiseworthy quality, “except those who are patient” in putting up with things that they dislike, and force themselves to do that which Allaah loves. For people are inclined to respond to mistreatment in like manner, and not to forgive it, so how about responding in a kind manner? If a person makes himself be patient and obeys the command of his Lord, and realizes the great reward that will bring, and understands that responding to bad treatment in like manner will not serve any purpose and will only make the enmity worse, and that good treatment will not lower his status, rather the one who shows humility for the sake of Allaah will be raised in status, then the matter will become easy for him, and he will do that with joy and pleasure. ....

“and none is granted it except the owner of the great portion” is because it is the characteristic of the best of people, by means of which a person can attain a high status in this world and in the Hereafter, and it is one of the greatest qualities of good character and good manners. End quote. Ibn Hibbaan al-Basti (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: What the wise person must do is train himself to adhere to the quality of forgiveness towards all people, and try to forget about waiting for an opportunity to retaliate for bad treatment, because nothing can cancel out the bad effects of bad treatment apart from good treatment, and nothing can make bad treatment worse and increase its bad effects but responding in like manner. This does not mean that if you uphold ties with them you should not criticize their actions or highlight their mistakes. Rather you are obliged to do that, because this comes under the heading of naseehah (offering sincere advice) that Allaah has enjoined upon you, so that they will see the error of their ways and set their affairs straight. If approved, they will receive an invitation and instructions to complete their payment to reserve their seat at the event. Approval is based solely on the responses we receive to the survey. Our goal is to only invite those who have a real chance at finding a match at the event. For example, if you are looking to marry someone between the ages of 35-40 and the majority of those who fill the survey are under 35 attending would be a waste of your time and money. In order to keep the event organized and balanced, seating is limited and based on a first-come basis. http://halfourdeen. polldaddy.com/s/offline-dcva-assoc-2014 6th Annual Metro Washington Quran Recitation Competition Saturday, April 26 2014, 11:00am - 3:00pm Creative Education & Publishing is very pleased to announce the upcoming 6th Annual Metro Washington Quran Recitation Competition (MWQRC) of 2014.
