Muslim Funfest Hoping to Make Histor y With 10,000 Carnival Goers

By Muslim Link Staff The annual Muslim Funfest carnival is set to make history as the largest Muslim outdoor carnival ever held in the United States. Or at least that’s what organizers hope.

On Saturday, May 28, 2011, organizers are expecting over 10,000 Muslims from the greater Washington and Baltimore metropolitan region and hundreds from Pennsylvania and Delaware to spend a day at scenic High Point farm in Clarksburg,

Maryland, the site of the previous three carnivals, all held Memorial Day weekend. “We’ve added several more high capacity mechanical rides this year in response to feedback about long lines

for the rides,” said organizer Zafer Eroglu. “We’ve also re-organized the food stall area to make taking and processing orders faster for our guests Insha’Allah.” >> CARNIVAL Pg 9

Community News DC Youth Advised On How to Avoid Prison By Syed Junaid Hassan Muslim Link Staff Writer

Teaching Islam to prisoners is a common activity for Muslim activists throughout the DC region. Teaching how not to be incarcerated, however, is a subject rarely discussed. The evening of Friday, April 29, 2011 marked a cornerstone event for the community of DC Muslim youth, ‘How to Avoid the Criminal Justice System’. The event was organized by IMAN-DC and Project Reach in partnership with the Islamic Research of Humanitarian Services Center of America (IRHSCA) in Capitol Heights, Maryland. Geared towards the youth, the program included well known community and youth activists discussing the daily trials faced by inner city youth and their challenges in the Criminal Justice System (CJS). Other topics included personal accounts and how incidents in Islamic history affect public policy today. The speakers stated that the CJS was not a

system of Muslim or ‘black’ persecution, but that once anyone entered it, there was little mercy or justice for the convicted. Thus the speakers focused their attention on how to avoid the CJS in the first place. Br. Abdul-Wali Timberlake, a local community leader in youth rehabilitation and awareness, put it bluntly. “It shouldn’t even be a question as to how to avoid the CJS because we [as Muslims] shouldn’t even touch the system in regards to criminal activity.” The speakers, AbdulWali Timberlake, Amin Muslim, Irfaan Noorideen, and Muhammad Ibn Bashir all discussed the importance of young Muslims realizing that the tools to avoid the CJS and subsequently progress to becoming a force of social change already exist in Islam. The speakers candidly discussed the definition of a Muslim, each covering features such as exemplary character, humility in a society that honors pride, unity among the young and old alike, and most importantly, standing up for the truth even if it’s against oneself. The audience they addressed was from the areas of DC that have seen much social degradation where pockets of the community have been uplifted by Islam.

However, as Irfaan Noorideen mentioned, a major issue in this wave of reversion [to Islam] was the confusion wrought by some who take great pride in being Muslim but “give guidance to others based on their limited knowledge, and the result is a distrust of these individuals.” A significant problem discussed by Br. Amin Muslim was that many youth view a prison term as a rite of passage without knowing just how disheartening it can be to see the world move on beyond them. He spoke candidly about his own experience, about how it pained him to hear the news of the deaths of loved ones over his period of incarceration but being unable to attend funerals; he was allowed fifteen minute conversations at each death to convey his grief. He spoke of the humiliation of being less than human, as incarcerated individuals’ personal decisions and nearly every move are dictated by higher authority. He ended his statements with the assertion that in following Islam lays the guidance for modern Muslims to sustain a productive society. In discussing the steps to take to avoid

the CJS, Br. Timberlake spoke of the importance of finding people of good character by going to the mosques where they are found. “Good character is what one does in front of other people and in the dark – standing for truth even when it is very hard for us to do.” Brothers Timberlake and Amin Muslim stated, “Islam came to destroy the [problems] in our neighborhoods that drove many people into the CJS and it gave us something better.” However, problems that have arisen since the resurgence of Islam are the lack of trust in the Muslim community and a general misunderstanding of how to implement Islam. This has resulted in young Muslims entering the CJS as well as an increase in their recidivism. This ‘revolving door’ of young Muslims encountering the CJS was discussed by Amin Muslim and Muhammad Ibn Bashir, both of whom spoke earnestly about the CJS’s lack of justice and that the only way to ‘survive the system’ was to avoid it outright, and then if one had entered the system, to make shrewd decisions.

Islamic Heritage Museum Opens in DC Nadirah Rasheed

Muslim Link Contributing Writer The nation’s capital is not just where history is made, but also where history is kept. Now, that historical treasure trove includes a museum dedicated to America’s Islamic past. On Saturday, April 30, 2011, America’s Islamic Heritage Museum and Cultural Center located at the former Clara Muhammad School at 2315 Martin Luther King Ave. SE, Washington, DC opened its doors to the general public. First conceived in 1996 as a traveling exhibit called “Collections and Stories of American Muslims” (CSAM), the non-profit organization went from masjid to masjid, gathering to gathering with scores of pedestals displaying photographic collections of old tabby ruins (slave quarters) from the old plantations of Muslim slave managers and other materials, artifacts, and stories of the first Muslims known in America. The CSAM is now part of the exhibits at America’s Islamic Heritage Museum and Cultural Center. This research project has been a passion and a labor of love for co-founders Amir Muhammad and his wife Habeebah Muhammad. During the early 1990s Brother Muhammad worked for the American Muslim Council where he met a diverse number of Muslims who didn’t know their history and as such felt isolated from American historical narrative. This prompted him to begin researching his own family history, which ultimately led

him to discover his roots with the Gullah people of coastal Georgia and South Carolina who had significant Islamic influences during the very early 1900s. This discovery encouraged Brother Muhammad to research the history of Muslims in America. He has traveled throughout the United States researching for this project, “whenever I heard of Muslim names in any old records anywhere in the United States, I would go there”, he said. All the digging and research done by the husband-wife team unearthed a wealth of information and revelations of hitherto unknown facts. The history of Muslims in America is a very rich history and it began as early as the 1300s with the expedition of Abu Bakr of Mali, West Africa. The exhibits in the museum are designed to give a century by century account of the developing history and story of Muslims in America. “Views From the Windows of American Islamic History: Early Muslims to the Americas”, starts with some of the earliest arrivals to American shores. One of the first known Muslims to arrive in America was Estevanico (Esteban of Africa) who arrived with Spanish explorers in the early 1500s. Though he was a servant, he was just as much an explorer as the Spaniards he came here with. During the 1600s the Melungeons and the Moors from Spain were settled in America, and many Muslim West Africans arrived as slaves. The exhibiti continues with the 1700s and features Muslim personalities such as Job Ibn Dijallo, the first hafiz of Quran in America to Kunta Kinte, the ancestor

of Alex Haley, the famous biographer of Malcolm X. The exhibit also features such unique artifacts as the 1753 and 1790 legal documents of Muslims from Morocco to runaway Muslim slave advertisements; evidence of Muslims amongst Native American tribes such as the Nanticoke and the Mohegans is also a part of the exhibit. The 1800s portion of the museum, “Forgotten Roots:Muslims in Early America”, chronicles early Muslim communities using hand written census records, personal letters written in Arabic, and stories of Muslim personalities such as scholar Omar Ibn Sayyid and Muslim Civil War heroes. The 1900s portion of the experience is titled “The Untold Story-Muslims of the 20th Century” and features Muslims in the

U.S. census, tombstones, organizations, and personalities who contributed to the ummah such as Imam Warith Deen Muhammad and his life as he came full circle to universal Islam from the Nation of Islam. By the late 30s and 40s many different Muslim immigrant communities opened Masajid in cities across America. By the late 1900s the Muslim community had contributed and integrated into American society in many professions, which leads into the last major exhibit in the museum, called “21st Century”. In this exhibit, Muslim judges, lawyers, scholars, educators, achievers, businessmen, doctors, athletes, military personnel, and others are featured. It was also during this century that many Muslim schools, charitable organizations, entertainers,

Busted Snack Machines Means Opportunity for Virginia Brothers By Muslim Link Staff Taking a short break from your computer screen at the office often involves a short trip to another machine down the hall – the vending machine. But that trip is often a disappointment for office snackers, as the machine might be broken, out of stock, or filled with one dollar delights that look as appetizing as stale bread. Not to worry, because the Yousuf brothers of Northern Virginia have come to the rescue. The software development duo – Ammar Yousuf, 29, and Farooq Yousuf, 26 – put their heads together and launched an online vending machine service called snackandmunch.com on March 28, 2011. The site mirrors the simplicity of the concept. A “snack pack” is a collection of 24 individual snacks you choose and costs $24 which includes shipping. You can buy one snack pack, or enroll in a monthly snack pack plan which you can edit or cancel at anytime. “This was an idea [that came out of] necessity. I think it was John D. Rockefeller who said ‘the secret of success is to do common things uncommonly well’,” said Ammar Yousuf who described himself as the “guy who comes up with all the crazy ideas”.

While you can save money going to Costco yourself and purchasing snacks in bulk, Snack and Munch offers office munchers both the convenience of one or two day mail delivery and far more snack choices than a standard vending machine. The brothers say their service is proving popular with college students and the military; one customer ordered from a military outpost in Afghanistan. For mid-morning munchies you can select a Kashi Honey Almond Flax Granola Bar from the breakfast category, for an afternoon crunch choose from about 50 types of chips and pretzels including varieties of veggie chips, and nostalgic Asians can relive their childhood by ordering a strawberry coated Pocky snack from Japan or a pack of Yan Yan Kids biscuits with chocolate dipping sauce from Singapore. For avid tea and coffee dippers, yes – Snack and Munch carries two types of Nonni’s Biscotti. In addition to the normal vending fare like candy bars and nuts, the site also offers about 50 varieties of gums and mints, including all the most popular brands and flavors. Some noteworthy orders since they launched: 48 bags of Utz chips; 24 packs of Trident Original gum; and 24 bags of Baked Cheetos. Although the service doesn’t particularly

cater to Muslims, all the snack choices available at snackandmunch.com are halal. “We check the ingredients ourselves. If someone finds a product that shouldn’t be there they can let us know. One person emailed us [informing us that] Altoids [mints] contain gelatin so we removed them,” said Farooq Yousuf. Presently, the start-up firm – the second entrepreneurial undertaking for the brothers after they founded video-sharing site shoutreel.com – has no full-time employees. Younger brother Hammad, a high school student, is the “warehouse manager”, said the brothers. “My dining room is our warehouse. We stacked the whole room full of snacks and promised my wife we would clean up later,” said the elder Yousuf. Asked if “warehouse manager” Hammad gets free snacks, the brothers said no. “We are very strict about eating inventory,” said Farooq. The brothers said snackandmunch.com

needs around 40 orders per day to support a full-time employee. Their goal is to get 1,000 regular customers per big city. Right now, shipping costs limit delivery to the United States only. The brothers said they’ve had orders from as far away as California and Hawaii. Asked what prevents someone else from coming up with the same idea, the brothers said “nothing”. “We are the first to market, so we have an advantage. We just have to execute well,” said Ammar. The service offers a 100% money-back guarantee if not satisfied. The business’ Facebook page announced an upcoming line of in-house snacks called “Snack&Munch Originals”, and the brothers said they are looking to

operating expenses for the masjid on Briggs Chaney Road in Montgomery County, Maryland total around $5,000 per month. Tonight’s focus was on the $50,000 of outstanding loans ISWA needs to pay back to community members. “Although we have a small gathering tonight, I think our hearts are big enough to it,” said Dr. Alie. ISWA Imam Faizal Khan opened his address and recited a part of Surah AliImran where Allah says “let there arise out of you a band of people inviting to all that is good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong” and said represents the “concept [ISWA] was built upon”. He listed all the religious, social, and outreach programs organized and hosted by ISWA, particularly highlighting the matrimonial service which has been going on for the last 13 years. “No other masjid has done this. They’ve tried, but no other masjid has been consistent like [ISWA]. We provide a forum where people can look for a husband or a wife,” he explained. Imam Faizal also went over ISWA’s affiliations with several inter-faith coalitions and councils, and highlighted the annual International Bazaar which

attracts about 2,000 people. “All of this wouldn’t be possible without volunteers, and we have a wonderful group who volunteer their time, effort, and resources [to run these programs],” Imam Faizul told the gathering. “It’s a few things, but alhumdulillah it’s a lot for this small community.” Dr. Alie added that building a masjid is easier than building programs and services, because program participation often fizzles out. Recent UMBC graduate and ISWA youth committee head Faheem Mahmooth discussed the dilemma the youth face having to form an identity combining both their Islamic and American upbringing. “I’ve seen that rigorous Americanism in the youth here at ISWA, but it should not take them away from their Islam … we can be part of the center and not part of the margins of American society,” said Brother Faheem. ISWA’s deputy Imam Yusuf Slitine conducted the fundraising, focusing on “doing a profitable business with Allah” by giving in charity. After the fundraising and maghrib prayer, guests went upstairs to eat and bid on auction items. The ambassador of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Dr. Neil Parsan joined ISWA for dinner and delivered a short address. About $35,000 was raised at the event.

There was a substantial turnout as participants and enthusiasts packed the gym which was divided into rings according to divisions and ranks. Iman signed up for two divisions, youth forms and sparring, while Brother Hernán participated in Black Belt forms.

Muslim Link Contributing Writer On Saturday May 7, 2011, two brave martial artists jointly held the banner for Dar-us-Salaam’s acclaimed Aqabah Karate at the JW Spring Classics Martial Arts Tournament. It was a historical day for AK student, Iman Hussain, and her instructor Hernán Guadalupe. This was the first tournament for 8-year old Iman, who recently transitioned from a “Tiny Tiger” to a “Young Warrior”. She was the only Aqabah Karate student who decided to take the challenge of participating in this spring’s open competition and her limitless preparation paid off as she swept through the opposition to win two first place trophies. Her proud teacher, Brother Hernán, also followed through, bringing home another first place trophy. The dynamic duo met with their families

There were 12 competitors in Iman’s forms division and she was the youngest and smallest in her group, but that did not stop this Young Warrior from achieving victory. She was visibly shocked as the judges announced that she was the first place winner. They stated that they were very impressed with her character, strength, and manners. Iman’s father, Zahid Hussain, was jubilant as he hugged his daughter and patted Instructor Hernán’s back. He said, “We were stopped by one of the judges and she said that [usually] nobody in that [particular] division has

good stances. She never came across Aqabah Karate before and she wanted [a] business card.” After her first victory, Iman quickly put on her sparring gear with her father’s help and headed for the ring where she challenged 3 opponents much bigger than her, and again showcased her courage and dominance. Although Iman suffered a hard blow which left a serious bruise on her delicate right shin during her first match, she wiped her tears and continued to fight her opponents, swiftly eliminating them from the first place category. The judges admired her determination and one of them later asked Instructor Hernán for Iman’s parents’ contact information in order to write a congratulatory letter. The annual carnival attracted over 7,000 people last year, and organizers sent out surveys after the event, making sure to incorporate the feedback into planning for the 2011 carnival. Organized by the Muslim Link newspaper, the event is being sponsored by around 50 organizations including most masajid in the DC region.

“The carnival is part of our mission to link the Muslim communities together. Families need a day to unwind and enjoy the spring weather [and] reconnect with friends all in a wholesome, Islamic environment. [Muslim Funfest] is really a day to appreciate one another for the sake of Allah,” explained Minhaj Hasan, editor of the Muslim Link. Notable this year are two airborne rides – a hot air balloon and a small helicopter. The hot air balloon will be tethered to the ground and rise close to 100 feet to

Whatever the outcome, the brothers say learning entrepreneurship means trying, and they hope Muslim youth in particular hear that message. “We have too many engineers and doctors

give riders a nice view of the farm. The helicopter is a four-seater and will take riders on a 5-minute trip around the farm at a cost of $45 per seat. Both airborne rides require reservations before the event at www.muslimfunfest.com. “How often will you be able to ride in a helicopter with your children?” asked organizer Jameel Khan. “We’re hoping parents who can afford it take this opportunity. It is a bit pricey, but renting [the helicopter] is also pretty expensive for our non-profit carnival,” he added. All of the proceeds go towards supporting

There are no entry or parking fees for the carnival, and families are welcome to bring their blankets and sun shades and spend time with their fellow Muslims. iLead Runs First Spring Camp By Jamal A. Abdul-Karim

Muslim Link Contributing Writer iLead, an organization founded two years ago by Howard County, Maryland Muslim Ayman Nassar, held its first Spring Camp from April 18-22.

The aim of iLead – which stands for “I Lead through Eman and Application of the Deen” – is to encourage the development of leadership among Muslim youth in the region. The five all day sessions were held at the Islamic Society of Baltimore for about 30 students ages 9 through 15;

a shuttle service provided transportation between counties for campers who needed transportation. The general program consisted of five youth counselors – mostly high school and college age students, a director, and several volunteers. The theme of the camp focused on iLead’s Mission, which is to establish leadership through da’wah.

Other themes explored through discussion and activities included Motivation, Patience, Courage, and Taqwa. Physical exercise included dodge ball and outdoor activities. For more information on iLEAD visit www.islamicleadership.org.

Summer Camp On Wheels Taking Youth from Baltimore to Florida Earlier this year, Baltimore Muslim activist Abdul-Hamiyd Muhammad told recently recently retired long distance truck driver Ocei Abdul-Karim that his organization – the Banu Tallahassiy Reserve in Deleware – was planning a trip for area Muslim youth to visit the New York Hall of Science Museum’s exhibit “1001 Inventions: The Muslim Contributions to Civilization” in late March.

The excursion on the 55-passenger bus was a “resounding success” according to Muhammad, so Abdul-Karim and Muhammad thought of a longer summer road trip for Muslim youth – a summer camp on wheels.

The development and cost for the current space of the museum was a little over $40,000 and the projected cost for the first year of operation is over $150,000. The founders are seeking funding support for the museum operations, programs, and exhibit development. lacking an understanding of Islam that may have prevented such actions in the very beginning. Islam

We Love Allah, Place Our Hopes in Him and Fear Him By Sheikh `Abd al-Rahmân al-Barrâk When we call people to righteousness, we should focus on Allah’s mercy and we should try to inspire in their hearts a great love for Allah that will make them hate to displease their Lord. At the same time, we should instill in them a hope for Allah’s reward in the Hereafter, as well as the understanding that all success in this world also comes from Allah alone. We should also teach people to fear Allah’s punishment. The message of the Qur’an emphasizes all three of these characteristics and makes it clear that they are the praiseworthy attributes of those who believe, namely: to love Allah, fear Him, and place our hopes in Him. The concept advanced by some Muslim mystics that we should only love Allah, and to be “pure” in our love we should do so without feeling any fear or hope, is misguided. Allah has ordered His servants to do the same as he ordered His prophets, that is: to obey Him and worship Him. Allah guided his Prophets to every possible form of righteousness. Likewise, He forbade them from all manner of sin. Thereafter, He promised the Prophets and all the believers a great rewards in this life and in the Hereafter. Allah says: “If any one desires a reward in this life, in Allah’s (gift) is the reward (both) of this life and of the Hereafter” [Sûrah al-Nisâ’: 134]. Likewise, Allah has warned whoever disbelieves in Him and disobeys Him of punishment in this life and in the Hereafter. Allah has guided His servants not only to love Him, but also to fear Him and place their hopes in Him. He praises the believers who that. Allah says: “These were ever quick

in doing good works: they used to call on Us in yearning and awe and humble themselves before Us.” [Sûrah al-Anbiyâ’: 90] He says: “Those whom they call upon do seek (for themselves) means of access to their Lord, as to who are nearest. They hope for His mercy and fear His wrath:

of misguidance. They have become convinced of this errant way and made to think it is the best one. In fact, their claim belies the Prophets and the obligation the people have to follow the Prophets’ example. This claim also belittles the greatness of Allah’s rewards and the severity of His

punishments. This attitude is opposed to what Allah wants from His servants.

The true believers in Allah worship Him because they love Him, glorify Him, fear Him, and place their hopes in Him. This is the correct application of belief in Allah’s names and superior attributes. Allah is merciful but at the same time He is strict in punishment.

Allah has told us about Paradise and Hell so that the believers will yearn for Paradise and endeavor to be saved from Hell.

Allah says: “Tell My servants that I am indeed the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful; And that My chastisement will be indeed the most grievous chastisement” [Sûrah al-Ra`d: 49-50]. Allah’s names and attributes imply that we should have all of these feelings: love, reverence, fear, and hope in Him. The claim of some overzealous mystics that they worship Allah because they love Him without feeling any fear of Hell or any desire for Paradise is a serious form

Fear and hope are two pillars of belief, and Allah has praised His servants who put both of these pillars into practice. Whoever worships Allah without any consideration of fear and hope will be missing this obligation. He will also be missing out on Allah’s reward and the praise that Allah has bestowed on those who carry out this obligation. Those mystics are also contradicting human nature by their claim. Allah has created in people the desire to like what suits them and dislike what hurts them. Allah told us that His servants solicit Him

to avert from them the wrath of Hell and to provide for them what He promised them. Allah says: ‘Those who say, ‘Our Lord, avert from us the wrath of Hell, for its wrath is indeed an affliction grievous’.” [Sûrah al-Furqân: 65] He also says: “And there are men who say: “Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter and save us from the torment of the Fire.”[Sûrah al-Baqarah: 201] Among the supplications that the Qur’an relates to us from the people of piety and understanding is to say: “Our Lord, grant us what You did promise unto us through Your Messengers and save us from shame on the Day of Judgment; for You never break Your promise” [Sûrah Al-`Imrân: 194] The Prophet (peace be upon him) ordered us, upon reading the tashahhûd in our daily prayers, to seek refuge with Allah from four things: the torment of Fire, the torment in the grave, the trials of this life, and the Anti-Christ. Those who worship Allah for other reasons, not out of fear or hope, will be abandoning such supplications. In this case, they are losing two virtues. One is that they are deprived of this righteous supplication and, second, the response from Allah for those who offer it. This call of the mystics is an unnatural innovation in our religion. We should dismiss such ideas and the assumptions that produce them. We will never succeed except by following the way of the Prophets and the Pious Predecessors. Allah orders us to ask Him in every prayer to guide us: “Show us the straight way, the way of those on whom thou has bestowed thy grace, those whose (portion) is not wrath and who go not astray.” [Sûrah al-Fâtihah: 6-7] [Source: en.islamtoday.net/artshow-4313969.htm]

Imam Muhammad Magid Meets With Donald Trump Inside the Donald Trump/Russell Simmons meeting BY JUSTIN ELLIOTT

meeting. (I’ve asked Trump’s spokesman if he has plans to visit the mosque, and I’ll update this post if I hear back.)

Global Grind

May 10, 2011 – The hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, along with a rabbi and a pair of imams, met privately with Donald Trump yesterday to discuss antiMuslim bigotry and the importance of tolerance, even discussing the possibility that Trump pay a visit to a large New York City mosque. Simmons, who is chairman of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, told me that Rabbi Marc Schneier, president of the group, sought the meeting after being alarmed by a Bill O’Reilly interview with Trump that focused on what the two of them referred to as the “Muslim problem.” “We talked about the hate crimes against the Muslim community in America,” said Simmons, a longtime Trump friend. “Donald was very, very enlightened by learning about the work that’s being done by the Jewish and Muslim communities to promote tolerance.”

Simmons told me that Trump’s racially inflammatory rhetoric did not come up, but that he had talked about the matter personally with Trump. “I don’t think those statements are racist, but they inspire people who are racist,” said Simmons, who, in a blog post about Trump last week wrote he was “disappointed.”

Russell Simmons and Rabbi Marc Schneier, along with Imam Shamsi Ali and Imam Mohammed Magid (President of the Islamic Society of North America), meet with Donald Trump at his office. According to Simmons’ account of the meeting, Trump denied having used the term “Muslim problem” in the interview with O’Reilly (in fact, he did use the phrase, twice). But the conversation did

not dwell on the particulars of Trump’s rhetoric. Simmons, for example, proposed that Trump pay a visit to the largest mosque in New York, the Islamic Cultural Center on 96th St. The leader of that mosque, Imam Shamsi Ali, was also at the

Community Views on the Death of Usama bin Laden ISNA Welcomes Justice For 9/11 Victims

Usama Bin Laden: Feelings, Reaction and Aftermath

(May 2, 2011) The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) joins all Americans in thanking President Obama for fulfilling his promise to bring Osama Bin Laden, leader of al-Qaeda, and perpetrator of the 9/11 attacks, to justice.

was not a Muslim leader; he was a mass murderer of Muslims. Indeed, al Qaeda has slaughtered scores of Muslims in many countries, including our own. So his demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.”

By Umar Lee

We hope his death will bring some relief to all the families, of every faith and walk of life, who lost loved ones on 9/11 and in every other terrorist attack orchestrated at the hands of Osama Bin Laden.

President Obama marked his hope that today, Americans will “think back to the sense of unity that prevailed on 9/11” and remember that “on that day, no matter what God we prayed to, we were united as one American family.”

Over the past decade, ISNA has stood firm on our stance that ISNA and Muslims in America condemn the actions of Bin Laden on 9/11 and all acts of terror at the hands of Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and all others who spread fear and hate through violence. We have repeatedly condemned the calls of Bin Laden and others like him for mass bloodshed and the attacking of innocent lives across the world. As the President pointed out in his address to the nation, the ideology of Bin Laden is incompatible with Islam: “Bin Laden

“ISNA joins President Obama and prays that as the nation continues to heal from the devastation inflicted upon them at the hands of Bin Laden, we will turn to each other today, united, and emerge tomorrow with an even stronger resolve to take every action necessary to protect the precious ideals of our nation that Bin Laden attempted to destroy on 9/11: peace, tolerance, respect, and freedom for all,” said ISNA President Imam Magid. [Source: ISNA press release]

Quote from Nihad Awad from the CAIR Press Conference: “The most important issue is that this terrorist has been eliminated and Muslims do not care about the details of how he was buried. I also believe that the fact that he was buried at sea was a shrewd move by the United States because there will be no trace for him [sic], no grave, no shrine that people can visit, therefore I hope that his memory will be eliminated from

people’s minds... we urge our government to exercise wisdom in dealing with the situation in Afghanistan and we urge the President to take this opportunity to put extra effort to save civilian lives, to end the war in Afghanistan and completely end the war in Iraq...”

I first heard the name of Usama bin Laden in 1996 at the home of a Saudi friend of mine. He showed me a magazine article featuring bin Laden and said in Saudi Arabia he was referred to as ‘’Sheikh Mujahid” because he was a pious man who was also a warrior for Islam. During the 1990’s every time I heard his name it was in a positive light. Before jumping to conclusions as to why this is, we should first put this into context. The Muslim Ummah has fallen from greatness and has been under siege for centuries. The Crusades, Colonialism, Neo-Colonialism, Secularism, Globalism and the rule of corrupt Western-backed puppet regimes created the political climate in which Bin Laden operated. Recognizing the weak state of the Arab and Muslim World, various movements and organizations were founded to try and improve the status of the society. Some of those organizations were rooted in socialism, Baathism, nationalism, or tribalism. Under the tutelage of the likes of Muhammad Qutb and Abdullah Azzam, Bin Laden became part of a movement that sought to revive the Muslim Ummah based on the principals of piety and social justice rooted in Islam. Shunning nationalism and the privilege his wealth provided,a young and enthusiastic Bin Laden headed to Pakistan to help with the effort of the Afghan mujahudeen fighting off the invaders of the Soviet Union. Many today, including a lot of Muslims, have ceded their minds to some kind of leftist narrative of the events of those days. However, to set the record straight, the mujahudeen were not a creation of the CIA, but rather a

grassroots response within the Muslim ummah to Soviet aggression. Later on, out of mutual political interest, there was some level of cooperation between various parties. It was just a few decades since the mass atrocities committed by the Soviet Union against the Muslim peoples of the Caucuses that the Soviet-controlled republics of Central Asia were brutally repressing their Muslim populations, so it was natural for Muslims to fight against the Soviet aggression. Young Usama could have continued a life of comfort in his native Saudi Arabia and donated money, but he chose to go to the front line. It was in Pakistan and Afghanistan where he would become a leader of a global movement to remove oppression from the Muslim ummah and to restore the lands of Islam to the rule of Islam. He fought alongside Arabs and non-Arabs, blacks and whites, Salafis and Sufis, and he only asked for those who joined him to be committed to fighting the enemies of Islam and establishing the rule of Islam. For religious and sincere Muslims that part of the life of Bin Laden is not controversial and is heroic. Of course it was followed by his support for mujahudeen in Bosnia, Chechnya, the Philippines, Kashmir, and other places. People who were there on the ground in Bosnia have told me that if not for his organizational support many more Bosnians would have been killed. This heroic phase of the life of Bin Laden earned him a lot of love and respect in the Muslim World. While he was doing these things, he also helped to organize a crucial gathering of Muslim leaders from >> REACTION Pg 16

>> continued from pg 15 all over the world in Sudan to develop a cohesive global strategy, organized a movement calling for the removal of the corrupt Saudi monarchy, and showed that Muslims could work together despite racial and ethnic differences. The Controversy and Blunders It was in the next few years when Bin Laden would make some more controversial moves. As he joined hands with Egyptian Islamists such as Ayman Zawahiri who had been fighting the corrupt Americanbacked secular Egyptian regime he began to focus on the ‘’far enemy”. The Far Enemy is America; because it is America who backs all of the regimes which have been oppressing the Muslim populations. It is also America which is the military and commercial leader of the West, a civilization that has been at war with Islam on and off for the last 1400 years. Taking the fight to America was not controversial because there was not a lot of love for America or anyone who seriously doubted the sinister nature of American involvement in the Muslim World; what was controversial was the timing and tactics. Timing. This was an issue many Muslims argued believing the Muslim ummah was too weak to take on America and that the reaction would be too great endure. The counter argument of Bin Laden and his supporters was that Muslims had already defeated the Soviet Union and America did not have the stomach for a fight. It was also argued that fighting the puppet regimes was meaningless as long as they had a continual supply of American weapons and money so the source – America -- had to be attacked. Tactics. The bombing of the USS Cole off the coast of Yemen was not that controversial for Islamists. It was a military target of a hostile force and thus fair game. However, subsequent attacks such as the attacks on the American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania proved to be controversial as they killed hundreds of innocent civilians (and many of them were Muslims). In this stage Bin Laden moved from

May 13th - May 26th, 2011 someone supporting liberation struggles of oppressed Muslims holding widespread support in the Muslim World to engaging in a long and protracted game of asymmetrical warfare with a Superpower. Some of the tactics many Muslims find to be illegitimate and unlawful. Still, through the 1990’s leading up to 2001 the global Islamic Awakening was still in strong shape and had not provoked a huge reaction from the West. 9-11 What happened on September 11, 2011 no one knows for certain. Many believe that Usama Bin Laden and his organization were responsible for the attacks that took the lives of nearly 3000 Americans. I am not one of those people as I have never seen sufficient evidence of proof against the man while uncovering many more facts that lead me to believe there is a lot more to the story and many dark and sinister forces at play. To be clear, if this was the crowning achievement of the life of Bin Laden he did not claim credit for it. One would think he would have mentioned 9-11 in numerous videos, penned articles on the topic, and gloated over the attack. Yet, that did not happen. There is only one highly unconvincing video in which America claims Bin Laden takes responsibility. Whether he was responsible for 9-11 or not, he became public enemy number one in America and served as the galvanizing force to return the West to its original position as a civilization based primarily on its opposition to Islam. Since 9-11, carnage has ensued – a new Crusade by any other name. This time Jerusalem did not have to be taken because it is already occupied. Iraq and the great city of Islam Baghdad drowned in the blood spilled by Americans. Afghanistan faced an invasion worse than that of the Soviets. No Muslim activist is safe anywhere. Predator Drones hover over the Muslim World ready to attack at will. Dungeons of tyrants are filled with the pious. Muslim men disappear in the middle of the night to torture and secret prisons with their only crime wanting a better world for their Muslim children. The Swiss have banned the Minaret, the French have banned the Niqaab, the British have targeted their Muslim population, and in Europe a political career can now be made by bashing Muslims. America is at war with any Muslim, in any country,

seeking to establish an Islamic State. In the Muslim World a cycle of pathological violence and killing emerged in many societies. Some of these atrocities were committed in the name of al Qaeda. Make no mistake, these actions were horrific and un-Islamic such as bombing shrines, mosques, churches, and markets; but did bin Laden ever authorize or call for these actions? This is unclear. The airwaves in America are now filled with those who curse Islam and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). A full-time industry of Islamophobia has been created. Adapting to the new climate, those Muslim organizations and leaders in America who were once strong are now weak. When the time came for a test they proved to be weak and not have the courage to speak truth to power. Rather, like Judas, they sold their Muslim brothers out not for silver but for iftar meals at the State Department and White House, the government off their back, and government sponsored trips. A new Islam has been created in America. One not inspired by the Quran and Sunnah, but rather by the CIA, FBI and secular academia. An Islam with no teeth, no courage, and no message, subservient to the rule of the master. These organizations vary, some being for secular liberal New Age yuppies, others merely being get rich schemes for Muslim televangelists, and others just being tools of the State. What they all have in common is that none of them poses any kind of threat to the powers that be or give a message of hope and liberation to the masses. None of them call on the courage of the Muslim man; but rather seek to change Islam at any and every turn to please their masters. In the shadows however, small groups of Muslim families gather here and there, dedicated to the Quran and Sunnah and shunning the spotlight and sanction of the State. The Death of Usama bin Laden It is too early to judge the story that has came out in the last few days regarding the death of Bin Laden. A lot of questions remain such as: If you had Usama bin Laden, the biggest terror mastermind in the world, and the most wanted man, why in the world would you kill him? Surely you could interrogate him and find out about current plots, how he is getting money, where he has been sending money, and who is in his organization.

Just within a couple of days the official story given by the American government has already changes several times. If the story is true then the treatment of the body of Usama Bin Laden constitutes a crime. To be dumped in the ocean when you have died on land is not in keeping with Islamic law. There was no proper ghusl, no Salat-ul-Janazah, and no burial in the ground. Why not let the media see the body and within hours he could have had a proper Muslim burial? If the US was told this was a proper way to bury a Muslim who gave them this advice? Or is this all just a farce and the story of the body being thrown in the ocean part of a cover-up? Muslims in America seeking to gain favor and enter the American mainstream (Sodom and Gomorrah) have issued statements praising the alleged death of bin Laden. Some Muslims have even publicly celebrated. How much of this is genuine and how much is some kind of an act to earn brownie points one never knows, but it is repulsive nonetheless. It is not becoming to celebrate the death of a fellow human, much less a fellow Muslim who worked so tirelessly on behalf of fellow Muslims. Usama fought for you, maybe he even died for you. It should be noted that in the public celebrations amongst Americans a lot of sickening things have been observed. Cursing of Islam and Muslims, desecrations of the Quran, cursing of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the use of racial slurs. These celebrations have shown the ugly side of America similar to the celebrations that would emerge after the lynching of black men in the South. Like everyone else Usama bin Laden will be judged on the Day of Judgment for his deeds and Allah is The Judge. He is my Muslim brother and a part of our big family. For what he did wrong I pray for his forgiveness and for what he did right I pray for his reward. If he was behind airplanes being hijacked and blown up that is a major sin and he will have to answer for that – not to Umar Lee or American Muslim leaders or the FBI -- but to Allah. Every Muslim has read

that the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam told his ummah about the wonderful nature of honey. In the Qur’an in Surah An-Nahl, Allah described honey as a “drink of varying color wherein is healing for men”. Its no wonder that scientists are spending more and more resources examining, testing, and developing honey-based medical treatments. As early as December 26, 2007, the Associated Press ran a story titled “Honey makes medical comeback”. One company that has believed in the restorative power of honey for a long time is HoneyDerm, Inc., a Lansing, Michigan based company that spent years bringing the healing power of honey to people suffering from hair loss, dandruff, and skin disease. Their most famous product line is Hairback Lotion and Hairtonix Shampoo, that “helps stimulate new hair growth and thicken existing hair”. Honeyderm, Inc also claims the products solve dandruff and scalp psoriasis. The Muslim Link requested access to some of Honeyderm’s customers, and Brother Mahmoud from Honeyderm gladly offered us some phone numbers. Brother Hasan, in his late 30’s is from Maryland and suffers from the common skin disease eczema. “I’ve had eczema

since high school, and it got worse as the years went on. I went to a dermatologist and he recommended a cortisone-type prescription cream. It did stop the itch, but my skin was still dry and tight. I’ve tried lotions and shampoos from Aveeno, Lubiderm, Vaseline, and others. Alhumdulillah, I found Honeyderm’s Dermatonic-P, and it is really, really a blessing for people with Eczema or other skin illnesses. I no longer wake up sweating at night! AllahuAkbar!.” We called Abdurihman Khalil from Chicago. He did not know we were going to call. Abdurihman started losing his hair when he was about 28. He discovered the Hairback product line at a convention and decided to test its claims. “The hair loss stopped completely,” said Abdurihman. “It’s excellent, and I’ve been using it now for 6 years.” We also called Brother Mustafa Al-Omary in Sterling Heights, Michigan. He decided to do something about his thinning hair at age 40 and tried the Hairback treatment. Asked how long it took for him to see results, he told us “Oh gosh, less than a month. My thin spots filled in within 3 months,.” He said he would “absolutely” recommend the product to anyone. “It’s not a fly-by-night product, its awesome,” said Mustafa. We

also called Najeebudheen Appat, a 30-year old living in Los Angeles, CA. He’s had a severe dandruff

Dermatonic-P, and it is really, really a blessing for people with Eczema or other skin illnesses. I no longer wake up sweating at night! Allahu-Akbar!.” -- Br.Hasan, Maryland problem for a long-time, and had been searching for a solution. “I tried so many different products like tonics and shampoos, I can’t even remember them all, until I found this product around 2002. My problem was solved completely, the entire thing is taken care of. I even called [Honeyderm] with the great feedback,” recalled Najeebudheen. He told us that Allah creates shifa in many things, and Honeyderm’s products are a part of that. “For dandruff problems, this is the total solution,” he told us from his mobile phone.

On Honeyderm’s website, there are many more testimonials from Muslims and non-Muslims from around the nation and the world. There is also a gallery of “before and after” pictures of both hair loss treatments as well as skin treatments. And best of all, for those of us who’ve “tried it all”, there is a full money back guarantee. Allah said honey heals. The Prophet Sallallahu’alyhi wa sallam said honey heals. The people we called said honey heals. With a money back guarantee, there is absolutely nothing to lose, and everything to gain – your hair and skin!
