An exposé in Mother Jones magazine chronicles the story of an American named named Naji Mansour who was living in Kenya. After he refused to become an informant, he saw his life, and his family’s life, turned upside down. SILVER SPRING, Md. (WJLA) - An international theft ring, targeting upscale homes owned by minorities, has tiptoed into Montgomery County. Investigators say the highly orchestrated crime syndicate, based out of Houston Tx., is targeting Asian, Indian and Middle Eastern residents. In accordance with religious and cultural tradition, individuals from all three ethnic groups often keep large quantities of valuables, including gold, in their homes. According to court records obtained by ABC7 News, the worldwide ring sports a large roster of criminals. Most are Colombian nationals with false identities, living in the United States illegally. The thieves' modus operandi includes breaking into high-end homes, rummaging through bedrooms and offices, stealing currency, jewelry, guns and documents. Most of

Anne Arundel Muslims, Elected Officials Strengthen Ties at Annual Dinner By Urooj Zulfiqar

Muslim Link Staff Reporter On May 4, 2014, Anne Arundel County Muslim Council (AACMC) held its fourth bi-annual dinner at the Double Tree Hilton. Hundreds of Anne Arundel County Muslim residents attended the event along with county politicians, senators, delegates and law enforcement personnel.

The event started with the recitation of the Quran, followed by nasheeds presented by the Makkah Learning Center’s kindergarten class, educating the guests about Islamic trivia such as Islamic calendar. Throughout the event, distinguished guests were acknowledged highlighting their brief biographies and achievements. A selected few guests were invited to address the audience.

About 450 people attended the event and made it a memorable night for the guests and community alike. School children educated and entertained the crowd through performances regarding Islam and Muslim customs. It was a night filled with many great personalities. A profound sense of friendship was evident amongst the guests and the community members reflected through vigorous handshakes and big smiles while greeting old friends and making new ones.

AACMC’s President, Rudwan AbuRumman, welcomed everyone with a fiery speech. He mentioned how the Anne Arundel County administration and Vpoliticians are not complete without the Muslim community and vice versa. He expressed his gratitude toward his board of directors and the volunteers who worked hard to make the event a success. He was appreciative of the fact that the county government was working day and night to make it a better place

New National Organization Provides Interest-Free Student Loans to Islamically Active Muslim Students By Hena Zuberi Muslim Link Staff Reporter It was the last semester before graduation. Hasan* thought is had done everything right: a great GPA, scholarships, worked 3 jobs to help the family after Baba lost his. Now $8000 stood between him and his civil engineering degree. With a prestigious internship awaiting him after graduation, he wondered what he should do.

Based in St. Louis, the organization started with an experiment—the goal of helping one student. They wanted to test the waters and see if the process was viable. Wanting to keep it simple, they raised money through donations to help fund secular education for those who are Islamicly oriented. “Many times we find that Interest (riba) is a barrier for them to get secular knowledge,” says Dr. Athar Haq, ACC President.

With rising college tuition costs, many Muslims students and their families struggle with the notion of taking interest-based student loans. Education is a need, but there are very few mechanisms for interest-free relief for students. A Continuous Charity (ACC) is a new organization that gives loans to students in the United States.

Haq, a young medical resident, lives in Detroit. He relays how a brother in his community was having difficulty running his life, “a legitimate, credible person, who wanted to pursue Islamic knowledge, continue community service and finance a higher education.” Advised by experts in Islamic finance Dr. Main Al-Qudah and Shaykh Ibra-

In 2012, a 27-year-old youth group coordinator was awarded a $28,000 loan to study automotive technology. Last year, loans were given to 7 students, with amounts ranging from $650 to $12,000. To apply the student must be a Muslim who is actively engaged in his or her respective community, attending or attended a junior college or four-year university/college, and—this is the clincher— actively advancing their Islamic education. Two letters of recommendation (written by either a local imam, a community

leader, or a teacher), a personal statement and financial statements are part of the application. An interview with the board is a requirement. If approved for a loan, then the educational institution is paid directly. Dr. Haq says the goal is to raise $50,000 in 2014 and to create an endowment fund. At a recent fundraiser keynoted by Wissam Sharieff, ACC raised $30,000. The program can be replicated in any community across the country by building a local chapter of ACC for regional recipients. ISWA Surpasses Funding Goal, Aims to Make Masjid Eco-Friendly By Hena Zuberi

In keeping with its commitment to transparency, the masjid invited the consultants to give a presentation at a fundraiser held in the ISWA multipurpose hall—Maser Consultants of Sterling, VA who designed the famed John Hopkins parking lot.

The area is set to see its first masjid with an environmentally friendly parking lot. The Islamic Society of Washington Area in Silver Springs has been a pioneer for 40 years, building the masjid with their own hands, minimizing construction expenditure and now they are embarking on another project that will hit the ball out of the park, well at least the parking lot. The masjid struggles with parking, according to past President Dr. Fazil Alie, as it serves an ever-growing congregation. The extension will add 115 parking spaces to the lot, and a walkway to the masjid. The lot will extend to the tree line, midway into the property where the preserved area starts. As previously reported in the Muslim Link, the Paint Branch Creek of the Anacostia River is a delicate watershed that leads to the Chesapeake Bay. A unique cold-water community lives in

this sub watershed, where the water temperatures are cool enough for adult brown trout to thrive. The ISWA property sits near the banks of this creek. Storm water runoffs from area parking lots and developments have damaged the ecosystem of the creek. Uncontrolled storm water runoff from many communities degraded local water quality. The runoff also eroded stream channels, making the streams shallower and raising water

temperatures, which is detrimental to wildlife. Pervious concrete —the technology Islamic Society of Washington Area will use in masjid parking lot —allows water to drain straight through into a reservoir below the pavement where it can subsequently soak into the ground. Most concrete and asphalt does not allow rainwater to penetrate the ground; instead the water runs off and pollutes waterways.

Concrete is an aggregate material say experts. It is composed of rocks or gravel, well-mixed cement and water. Permeable concrete has no fine particles; this creates voids in the mix allowing water to seep through. “It is not smooth and pretty like regular concrete,” informed the consultant. The material will allow the rainwater to refill groundwater. An added bonus is that the material retains heat so in the winter snow will melt, significantly reducing the need for plowing the lot, according to the consultant working on

CAIR-MD Holds Get Out the Vote Drives At Area Masajid By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter “Are you registered to vote?” Fariha Quasem inquires as hundreds of worshippers walk out from the first jummah at the Muslim Community Center (MCC) and others walk in to attend the 2 p.m. sermon. It is Election Year in Maryland and in preparation the Council of American Islamic Relations Maryland Office (CAIR-MD) is holding voter registration drives around the state. A table is set up outside near the masjid and multipurpose hall, located on New Hampshire Avenue in Montgomery County, on a sunny, spring Friday, but its too windy for any signage. Quasem is a Marylander, raised in the halls of MCC; she attended local Wheaton High School, and the University of Maryland for undergraduate and law school. After working at the House of

The Islamic Leadership Institute (ILIA) is filling a void in the community by providing a space for youth and professional leadership certification based on a six-core fundamentals framework.

ILIA founder Ayman Nassar and youth counselor Arif Kabir conducted a workshop aimed at helping parents and their teenage children better communicate.

ILIA brings to communities in the DC Metro cutting edge training and professional grade development in various areas of management. Third Muslim Businessman Murdered In Richmond By Hena Zuberi Muslim Link Staff Reporter

Truly Allah tests those who He loves. A 29-year-old father was shot and killed during a jewelry store robbery in Richmond, Virginia. Just a headline for some, but for this particular family the sole breadwinner was brutally murdered. Shortly before Asr on Monday May 5, 2014, police were called to Victoria Jewelers on the south side of the 300 block of East Broad Street, according to NBC 12. With photos of his wife and 18-monthold toddler in his wallet, Hafidh Muhammad Haroon Baig lay on the floor where a couple found him and notified the police. He was someone who had memorized the entire Qur’an and he worked as the store manager for Victoria Jewelers for seven years in downtown Richmond. A community member says that Baig’s

There is a controversy over the amount of Muslims in the country. “Our logic tells us that census is a critical and practical step,” emphasized Imam Talib Abdul-Rashid of MANA. He said the American Muslims are a diverse, not a divided, community. MANA founded by Imam Siraj Wahhaj is also part of USCMO. “The Muslim community is one of the most diverse communities, if not the most diverse religious community in America,” said Khalil Meek, executive director of the Muslim Legal Fund of America. “We have a vast amount of resources and education and principles and values that we want to share with this great country. We want to contribute and we hope this platform is the beginning of that opportunity to better serve and unite our voice for the benefit of all.” Transparency is another need for Muslim leadership to win over and unite Muslims spread around the nation. American Muslim Alliance’s National Director, Imam Mahdi Bray gave his blessings to build bridges of understanding and civic gravitas with social justice.

The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) is not a part of this council. “As a matter of policy, MPAC works in coalition based on issues rather than merely organizational alliances. We wish the new entity well and look forward to the opportunity to collaborate on issues of mutual concern,” related Edina Lekovic, the Director of Policy & Programming of MPAC to the Muslim Link. ISNA, the Islamic Society of North America, is also not a part of this coalition. So far no women’s organizations have joined the coalition. Jammal says that the list of member organization will grow as the organizational boards complete the process of approving memberships. CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad said the civil rights giant is proud to join this historic organization in an effort to unify the dreams of every American Muslim on a large platform. “Islam is not an organized religion but Muslims are organized,” he jested. In late January of this year, in Gaithersburg, Maryland, Muslim community member Abdul Ghaffar, was murdered with a boxcutter style knife while working his shift at 7-11. Tayyab's killer remains at large, while arrests were made in the other two cases. The site was purchased by the community in 1991. The community has evolved from the 6 families of doctors, who moved to Hagerstown to find a safe haven from big city life, to more than 200 families. Over the years, Bosnian refugees and South Asian, Arab, African immigrants have made Hagerstown their home. Muslim families from bordering states, West Virginia and Pennsylvania, also call the masjid their spiritual home. Funding had held up the project, but the community has now raised the money from within and the ground is being prepared for construction. The contract signed for $1.1 million is just shy of the final amount. The expansion will house a 5000 sq. ft. hall that will double as additional prayer space during jummah and the Eidain. A foldable divider will separate the multi purpose room from the current prayer space. A foyer for the women, a new kitchen, bathrooms for men and women will also be a part of the extension. “Many community

Ayman Nassar, or “Ammu Ayman” as the youth call him, is the founder and chair of the board of directors of Islamic Leadership Institute of America (ILIA). He has held positions on the board of directors and advisors of several masjids and Islamic organizations in the US. He lives by the words of the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam, "on a journey, the leader of the people is their servant." “[In all the years] we have covered organizations and masajid in the DMV area, we have not seen anything like ILIA,” stated Minhaj Hasan, editor in chief of the Muslim Link, who was the master of ceremonies for the event. ”Br Ayman is running a very unique program.” Hasan said that ILIA is filling a void in the community and that in order to master leadership children need to be put in positions where they have to lead. Another service provided by ILIA is the mentoring of at-risk youth. The organization provides tutoring and academic support for low-income students. “They come to us with low self-esteem, in depression. Working with [our] tutors [changes their lives] in a matter of weeks,” shared Nasser. ILIA’s Green Sprouts Program in Baltimore City is a program that parents say help their children’s brains to grow emotionally and socially. Using gardening—hence the name— young men, often without a roof over their head, are mentored and coached. CAIR

ILIA envisions a center that can serve at least 500 at risk youth per year. The current proposal is for a charter center that can serve 40 non-resident students a day, and 12 resident students at any given time. When a young man accepts Islam in prison, what options does he have when he reenters society? I Can Lead, another ILIA initiative teaches students at Howard County Detention Center (HCDC). The program has gained large interest from the HCDC population and the class was at capacity during the semester. Each student costs I Can Lead approximately $250 for the academic quarter, including books and tuition, sponsored through donations. At the fundraiser, visiting scholar from South Carolina, Shaykh Muhammad Adly gave the keynote address on raising leaders. He shared that he had left Makkah to come and live in the United States for the purpose of dawah. He said he sees many projects around the country, but was specially impressed by the work that Nasser and his team do. “They are working on the foundation,” he said. Shaykh Adly had four suggestions for leaders: Consider the needs and wants of the people, know when to stop, don’t be a fitnah and make it easy for the people. He elucidated that all prophets were shepherds; shepherding was a Divine training program for every Prophet and Messenger. Placing an emphasis on the leadership of parents, he said that children learn from the examples parents set. Imam Safi Khan of Dar us Salaam spoke about the evolution of the community from the time he was a teenager and how ILIA was providing a valuable service. Questions the youth have about Islam need to be answered in the context of the firm tenets of the religion, he said. He urged the youth to be keys to goodness and locks to evil.

Dr. Fauzia Fazily, the principal of Al Rahmah School, speaking to the audience shared that the Islamic Society of Baltimore has asked ILIA to help their student leadership program. They know the challenges of Muslim youth and they will prepare our kids, she said. As a former positive behavior coach, Fazily knows the value such programs can provide to young adults, who are forging their way in a society where many Islamic values are not fostered. “Many young Muslim boys and girls get into lots of trouble despite strong family backgrounds” she emphasized; they drop out of school, often ending up in prison.

Sumaya Fahmy, a mother from Silver Springs, MD whose son has benefited from spending time at the Halal Yeah! Youth Center that ILIA runs, said that having a venue where her son can spend time with his friends in a fun and Islamic environment is very important to her. “I have a hidden agenda in sending my children, but it helps that they come back happy,” said Fahmy. A popular ILIA class is the Youth Project Management Certification for ages 12 – 18. For around a hundred dollars a class, students can complete a course of 8 classes and experience ‘a world of planning, organizing, controlling and directing projects.’ Youth not only learn essential leadership skills for success, but also ‘learn to transform boring work into exciting accomplishments.’

A Robotics Club for Middle School students was announced and interns who worked on many of ILIA projects such as an online brochure about tattoos and presentations for local organizations were recognized with special certificates.

Other classes offered by ILIA such as the Life Hacks: Purpose as a Tool for Optimal Functioning are taught by a local students, and help young adults in developing a purpose, making a positive impact on the world, and finding meaning in their life using positive psychology. The instructor Emily Rabinowitz, a junior at River Hill High School, is a member of the Gifted and Talented Independent Research Program where she is studying purpose development under the advisory of Dr. Jenni Menon Mariano of the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee.

A graduate of many ILIA’s programs, Yumna, 14, now an intern, held her award certificate. She said that ILIA taught her how to be independent and a positive influence.

She talked about how the County had the lowest tax rate in the state of Maryland and a property tax cut for the first time in 5 years due to the positive developments within the county, an achievement of her government. She also gave the announced that no increase in water bills in the coming year. Additionally, Neuman informed the audience of a six (6) percent increase in the county population and highlighted her government’s plan to use the tax funds toward public safety by adding more law enforcement officials. Ninety-nine percent of businesses in AA county qualify as small business. Since small business owners are the ones to create jobs and Neuman believes that economic development is all about serving the community, so she urged the community to come forward and serve the county by taking part in the commissions created for such purposes. “We want to make those resources are available to you…I can’t help you unless you guys get involved…I want you to be successful,” she added.

It was organized and planned to the utmost professional level. Graduating with Heart Rutgers Students Oppose Choice of Condoleezza Rice's as Commencement Speaker By Mohammad Ali Naquvi May 6, 2014

On May 18th, my alma mater will confer another class of Rutgers University students with their baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degrees. Whereas this is a long held rite of passage signifying the accomplishments of the recipient over years of tireless work, one degree that was to be conferred that day stood in stark contrast to this honorable tradition. The Honorary Degree of Laws that was to be presented to former Secretary of State and National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice as this year’s Commencement Speaker would have been a moral travesty. In the Bush Administration, Rice had oversight over some of the most egregious human rights violations during the Iraq War, which were widespread and are welldocumented, followed by an occupation which lead to more than 1 million civilian deaths. So what is a person, a student to do when they are presented with such a betrayal of values by the institution with which they will be inextricably linked for the rest of their lives? They could sit, smile, listen to her morally bankrupt words and go on with their lives. Or in one last statement to the Rutgers administration and community, they could take a stand, reflecting the truth that stirs in their souls, and not walk quietly off the stage with their degrees like lemmings. On Monday, April 28th, that is exactly what they did. After numerous op-eds in their daily student newspaper, faculty resolutions at two campuses and various petitions opposing Rice’s invitation were dismissed by the administration, some 50 Rutgers students, about half of whom were Muslim students on campus, led a rally and sit-in protest at the Old Queens Building on the College Avenue campus

They occupied the area outside the office of President Robert Barchi for more than 6 hours with almost a hundred more protesters in support chanting outside. It was not until they were denied food, water and access to bathrooms and threatened with arrest that they decided to leave, cheering in celebration on the way out. Amateur videos of the #NoRice campaign on social media show the energy as electric. And as momentum built on campus and media coverage grew, the actions continued – from banner drops from university buildings to a confrontation with President Barchi at a senate meeting where over 50 student protesters pressed the issue in public, compelling him to answer their questions. The pressure worked but not how anyone could have imagined. To the surprise of many and

delight of even more, Rice pulled out of her scheduled commencement speech herself on May 3rd, less than a week after the sit-in. Almost 30 years ago, Rutgers was the first public university to divest from Apartheid South Africa and then President Edward J. Bloustein was arrested for blocking the entrance to the Consulate of South Africa in New York City with 38 others. Conversely, President Barchi hid behind a veneer of free speech to cover the ulterior motive of opportunistic PR in an effort to attract funding to the university. This is not the legacy of the Rutgers I attended. Under Bloustein, Rutgers became one of the premier public universities in the country while retaining its moral integrity because it had a fiercely ethical man at the helm. The brave #NoRice student

protesters preserved that moral courage. When Barchi’s time at the university ends, it will not be any legacy that is remembered except his readiness to capitulate to power, his dismissal of a former public official’s atrocious crimes against humanity, and his utter disregard for the legitimate concerns of all those in the Rutgers community affected by the Iraq War. On May 18th, all Rutgers students will graduate with degrees but some will also graduate with heart, aligning their souls with the million murdered civilians whom they refuse to forget. To them, the beating of drums at graduation will represent the beating hearts of all those innocents whose memory they have kept alive with their courageous stand. And in decades to come, these are the graduates that will keep our society moving forward with moral progress and inspire others to do the same, not dead-of-heart bureaucrats, morally compromised leaders, and paperpushing establishment twits maintaining the status quo. It is young, passionate folks walking into danger on principle, who represent the quiet yearnings of mainstream society that recognizes the correct course of action but is afraid to take a stand. In just two weeks, they set an example for generations to come and showed that a small group of committed students can have a formidable collective voice. We owe them a moral debt of gratitude for not letting our silence tacitly legitimize the honoring of a war criminal yet again. "You Might Get Hit by a Car": On Secret Tape, FBI Threatens American Muslim Refusing to be Informant informant

TRANSCRIPT: JUAN GONZÁLEZ: New details have emerged about the FBI’s efforts to turn Muslim Americans living abroad into government informants. An exposé in Mother Jones magazine chronicles the story of an American named Naji Mansour. After he refused to become an informant while he was living in Kenya, he saw his life and his family’s life turned upside down. He was detained, repeatedly interrogated and ultimately forced into exile in Sudan, unable to see his children for years. He ended up spending 37 days in a squalid prison in Sudan. After he was released from prison, FBI agents approached him again. This time Naji Mansour decided to record the phone conversation. During the call, the agent informs Mansour that he might get, quote, "hit by a car." On Thursday, the phone recording was published by Mother Jones. Take a listen. FBI AGENT: If you did have any kind of business going on today or any kind of things like that, you’re going to find how miniscule and worthless it was compared to this fork in the road that you’re about to—that you’re about to take. NAJI MANSOUR: What are you talking about? No, why don’t you come out and say it? FBI AGENT: OK. NAJI MANSOUR: Why don’t you come out and say? What fork in the road are you talking about? FBI AGENT: Dude, it’s—whatever.

Honestly, I don’t care. I’m getting out of here. I don’t care. OK? And it’s—you know, when I tell somebody, "Hey, you know what? If you cross the street without looking, you’re going to get run over," that’s not a threat, [bleep]; that’s advice [bleep], OK? You’re about to cross the street without looking both ways, and I’m telling you, "You know what? You might get hit by a car." That is not a threat. That is a solid piece of the advice. So you don’t

And the way I start the story, and I think the best place to start, is with Naji’s mom, who’s a longtime U.S. government employee, and his sister, and they’re in Juba in South Sudan. And it’s the middle of the night, late at night. Juba is a very dangerous place. And they’re actually wandering the streets looking for Naji, because he’s been disappeared. They don’t know where he is. They’ve been told by his wife

AMY GOODMAN: That was a phone conversation of an unidentified FBI agent pressuring Naji Mansour to become an informant. Mansour’s story is the focus of a new piece in Mother Jones titled "This American Refused to Become an FBI Informant. Then the Government Made His Family’s Life Hell." We’re joined now by Naji Mansour via Democracy Now! from Sudan. And joining us from Washington, D.C., is journalist is Nick Baumann, who wrote the piece for Mother Jones magazine. Nick, let’s begin with you. Just lay out this whole story. NICK BAUMANN: As you heard, this is a story about Naji Mansour, who refused to become an informant for the FBI, and sort of what happened to him and his family, especially his family, after

that—who was held with him and then released, that he’s being held in a blue building somewhere, but they don’t know where that is. And imagine just if this is your child or your brother, and you’re an American living abroad, just having no idea where that person is and having to search for them. And Naji believes—and I think with—he has a few good reasons to believe this—that the U.S. government sort of orchestrated the bad things that happened to him and his family. JUAN GONZÁLEZ: And, Naji Mansour, could you tell us how it is that you’ve later discovered that you came into the crosshairs of the FBI? Why did they begin to target you initially? And talk about those early—the early experiences you had. NAJI MANSOUR: Well, basically, in 2008, I was working in Dubai in an IT company. And due to the financial crisis,

I had come back to Nairobi in late 2008. I had gone early 2009 to cancel my visa, and then I returned to Nairobi. I had, on numerous occasions, offered my place in Kenya, or my—actually, our family house in Kenya to a lot of travelers or anybody who would like to come by. And this is a family tradition that we have. We have traveled most of our lives, and we have been given accommodation, and we have given accommodation. So, apparently, just after I come back from Emirates, I get a call from a mosque acquaintance in Dubai, who, you know, I knew of, not so much, but we had several conversations. And on some occasion, maybe one or two occasions, I’ve offered him to come over to Kenya, or if he was ever in Kenya, that he should look me up, or something like this. He had called me, and he had asked for me to accommodate two young gentlemen coming by, his friends. I thought they would be coming from Emirates, but apparently they came from England. I kind of—I believed. When I was asking for more information, they had—the phone had cut. So, these two gentlemen happened to be on a watchlist. They had come over, stayed with me. And after about two weeks, my house was raided by local law enforcement. After the raid, which I—I wasn’t there, as can be read about in the story. After the raid, I secured some legal documentation barring my deportation, which is usually what they do to young men who are married to Kenyan women. Once I obtained this documentation, I handed myself in to the anti-terror police unit, and they had questioned me for two days and let me go. After that, I brought

myself to the U.S. Embassy to report this to the consular section, to a person called Mike Fogarty. And he basically brought in another guy called Jeff Roberts, who was the deputy RSO, head of security over there, or deputy head of security. And he basically came in with—very quickly came in with two FBI agents. It was very—it was very candid, but I agreed to sit and talk with them. It was from that time that the FBI was involved in my case. AMY GOODMAN: I want to turn to another clip from the conversation between you, Naji Mansour, and an FBI agent. Here, the agent tells you they’re scrutinizing not only you, but your mother. FBI AGENT: What I’m trying to say is, you don’t want to come into the embassy to do it, fine. You know, I—we said we’d do it outside of the embassy. This isn’t a—meeting hasn’t been a priority to you. In fact, you haven’t wanted to sit with us since we’ve talked, since I’ve been back in country. OK? You say you want to get things resolved, I say there’s scrutiny on you. There’s scrutiny on your mom. She’s employed by the consulate, and yet you don’t want—or she’s employed at the consulate through a contractor, and you’re saying you don’t want to come to the embassy, and there’s a good—there’s good reason for that. So I said— NAJI MANSOUR: Yes. FBI AGENT: —do you need us— NAJI MANSOUR: Exactly. My position

While you’re here, I’ve bent over backwards, and I really don’t—I really don’t like your tone. FBI AGENT: Naji— NAJI MANSOUR: I don’t like your tone, [bleep]. I don’t like your tone. FBI AGENT: Naji. NAJI MANSOUR: You have scrutiny on me, for what? What do you have on me? You have nothing on me. I’ve done nothing. AMY GOODMAN: Naji Mansour, speaking with the FBI. Naji, can you talk about what happened next? NAJI MANSOUR: Well, basically, if I can recall—I haven’t heard the tape in a while, but basically another FBI agent came on the phone. At that time, I was very angry because they had—they had basically started to pressure me to meet with them at a time that I was in a meeting. Just to put things into perspective, I have—at that time, was in Sudan for about a month. I’m basically starting my life over, trying to do random jobs, and they were pressuring me to meet at a time where I just couldn’t make it. And I hadn’t refused to meet with them, but I just refused to meet with them at that time. And I had told them that I could meet with them later, but they were really pushing for me to meet with them. And I kind of got insulted. I was already—you know, I was already apprehensive to the idea of meeting them, because of what I was told about them being involved in my—in my

detention in Juba. So, afterwards, another agent, Amar— sorry, another agent came online, and he told me that, you know, I should come—he doesn’t buy into my lies, or something to that effect—and I should meet with him, and if I don’t, my life will change. And that’s when I told him,

"Come out and say, what are you talking about, which fork in the road will I take?" And he basically—he wouldn’t go on into detail, but he said that there will be a series of events that will take place, and then he’s out of it. And sure enough, after that conversation, four days later, my mother, a government contractor working in Juba, was fired from her position, one day after she signed a new contract with

And they didn’t really—you know, they didn’t really tell us anything. They never accused me. They never charged me of anything. They wanted to know what had happened in Kenya. I told them. JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Well, Naji, you mentioned your detention in Juba. Could you talk about what was the pretext or the reason that you were detained and what happened to you during that period? NAJI MANSOUR: Shortly after the raid at my house in Kenya, about a month or so, I went to Uganda to visit my two older children. And on my way back into Kenya, they refused me entry. So I had went to Juba to stay with my mother, who was working there. And at the same time, it was in the plan to go there and to start a rugged laptop business that I had already previously been engaged in. Basically, I was there for about two months, living in Juba, going for meetings, and quite free. About two months into me being there, my mother decided to go back to Kenya for—I think for a business meeting or some type of business travel. And then my—I used the opportunity for my wife to come over and visit me. And one day— she was only here for—she was only there for about five days. And one day before she was supposed to travel back, two security men, or state security men, showed up at my place and said I needed to come in for questioning. We were like, "Fine, no problem." By that time, I kind of already had an idea why they wanted to question me. But, I mean, I would imagine that whatever happened in Kenya spilled over into Juba. I didn’t know how. I didn’t know why,

I just repeated the entire story to them very openly. AMY GOODMAN: Do you know other people who have been pressured in the way you have, Naji? NAJI MANSOUR: I have come across other people who have been pressured. During my experience with an organization in Kenya called the Muslim Human Rights Forum, we came across several people who were pressured in different ways with regards to, you know, becoming informants. And they—them being under detention at the time was used as kind of a form of duress in which to get them to accept becoming an informant. JUAN GONZÁLEZ: Nick Baumann, could you talk about—put this in the context of FBI efforts around the globe to target Americans who are abroad, who they, in one reason or another, want to turn to provide them information because they may suspect they have ties to terrorist groups? NICK BAUMANN: Sure. So the FBI is very concerned about what it would call homegrown terrorism, or terrorism by American citizens. And it’s especially concerned about people going abroad to receive training or meet with terrorist groups, and stuff like that. And because of this, and because of its sort of huge need for informants—it has about 15,000

informants in the United States, basically one in every mosque in America—it’s always trying to recruit informants. And one of the ways it does this is it applies pressure on American citizens, usually Muslims, who are traveling abroad. One—you saw a recent lawsuit in which a number of American Muslims charge that the FBI and the government were using the no-fly list to pressure them to become informants. Basically they’re told they can’t return to the United States unless they cooperate with the FBI. And this sort of phenomenon that we’re talking about in this case, which is sometimes called proxy detention, is where American citizens are actually picked up by foreign governments and either questioned in a similar way to what the FBI is interested in or actually questioned by the FBI itself while in foreign detention. And there are a number of other similar cases like this that I’ve reported on. Actually, the way I heard from Naji in the first place was I had reported a story about Yonas Fikre, who was an American who was living in Sudan and told the FBI he wasn’t interested in becoming an informant and was later arrested when he was traveling. He was arrested in the United Arab Emirates. And he says that he was detained and tortured there and asked questions like the questions that the FBI had asked him. And Naji emailed me after he saw that story, and he said, "I had a similar experience." And so that’s how I actually found out about Naji’s story in the first place. So— AMY GOODMAN: I want to—I want to go to that. In that article, you write Fikre "was beaten on the soles of his feet, kicked and punched, [and] held in stress positions while interrogators demanded he 'cooperate.'" This is Yonas Fikre talking about how FBI agents had tried to make him an informant.

YONAS FIKRE: They told me there was a case pending in Portland, Oregon, where I was living, and they needed my help. And I was kind of surprised. I said, "What case is there?" And they said, "Well, we can’t tell you. You have to accept—you have to be willing to help us, and then we can tell you. We don’t work like that." They would give me money, that I would live a good life. They asked me, "Don’t you love your family? Don’t you want them to have a good life? You will make good money. You know, work with us." And I made it clear to them. I told them I plan—I don’t plan to be an FBI informant or to be an undercover—whatever plan they were trying to do. But I told them that if there’s any question—if there’s anything that I know, you know, I would tell you guys. But as far as like me going in to anybody and trying to be secretly bringing any kind of information, that I would not do. AMY GOODMAN: That was Yonas Fikre talking about how FBI agents had tried to make him an informant. Nick Baumann, talk also about the significance of these clips that we have played of Naji Mansour and the FBI. NICK BAUMANN: So, I think the significance here is that a lot of these cases, you just sort of have to take the word of the people who are making these allegations. And in Naji’s case, it’s actually pretty well documented. You have this long interview that he recorded with the FBI agents in which they sort of confirm, or at least corroborate, some of his allegations. I obtained a document assessing—this intelligent document regarding his detention, sort of confirming that he had been detained when he said he was detained and for how long he was detained. I talked to, you know, Kenyan officials who confirmed his problems there. So there’s really a lot of corroboration for the story. And in terms of—I don’t want to—I don’t want to be naive. Of course, you

know, it’s not totally uncommon for law enforcement to pressure or even threaten people that they want things from. But I think the thing you have to keep in mind about these recordings is that these FBI agents, they’re not—they’re not stupid, and they know that they’re in Sudan and they’re talking on the phone, and there’s a good chance that Sudanese intelligence is listening. And there’s also a chance that their conversation is being recorded. And so, this is—these are things that they were willing to say, knowing that they might have been recorded. So, what your listeners and viewers have to think about is: What would they have said if they didn’t think there was a chance that they were being recorded? JUAN GONZÁLEZ: And, Nick, the— I’m wondering if you’ve gotten responses from the FBI, not only about the effort to try to get to him to be an informant, but also to threaten and target family members if he refused. NICK BAUMANN: Yeah, so that’s the strangest part of this, right? That—let’s say you take the—you don’t believe Naji, and you take the worst-case scenario and you believe that he really knew that these guys who were staying in his house were bad guys, and, you know—and he’s a bad guy himself. Even if you believe all that, that doesn’t necessarily mean that his family is guilty at all. His mother is a longtime employee of the U.S. government, has worked for the U.S. Agency for International Development for years and years, had a security clearance, handled baggage for Laura Bush when Laura Bush visited Kenya. And, you know, his brother was a marine who served two tours in Afghanistan. His sister also worked for the government. And all these people have had trouble with the law since Naji refused to become an informant. And as you heard earlier, Naji’s mom lost her job. And the question is, you know: What justifies that? And the government, in general—the FBI, the State Department, the U.S. Agency

for International Development—none of them are really willing to answer those sorts of questions. They were willing to sort of talk generally. And the State Department did confirm that they had—they confirmed Naji’s detention and confirmed that they had visited him in detention. But in terms of the firing of his mom, there’s not much information they were willing to give. AMY GOODMAN: Naji Mansour, if you could, in this last 30 seconds we have, explain why you’ve decided to come for the first time on national, international television? The significance of releasing these FBI calls, for you? NAJI MANSOUR: Basically, personally, I had wanted to come out with this since I was detained in Juba. And I had actually told the embassy to do so, to—they had a form, and I told them to alert everybody, including the media, including my state senator, everybody. Unfortunately, they did not do so. And afterwards, when— after I was released, my mother had some concerns, because of what would—you know, the blowback that would come to us if I did go to the media. But four years on, this is still happening. The government is still asking me out for coffee, last time I went to the embassy to renew my passport. Basically, this is not going away, and we need to make it stop. I want my life back. We want our lives back. AMY GOODMAN: I want to thank you very much for being with us, Naji Mansour, speaking to us from Sudan, Muslim American, says the U.S. government retaliated against him and his family when he refused to become an FBI informant. The Washington Post, May 5, 2014 A divided Supreme Court ruled Monday that legislative bodies such as city councils can begin their meetings with prayer, even if it plainly favors a specific religion. The court ruled 5 to 4 that Christian prayers said before meetings of an Upstate New York town council did not violate the constitutional prohibition against government establishment of religion; the justices cited history and tradition. “Ceremonial prayer is but a recognition that, since this Nation was founded and until the present day, many Americans deem that their own existence must be understood by precepts far beyond the authority of government,” Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the court’s conservative majority. The ruling reflected a Supreme Court that has become more lenient on how government may accommodate religion in civic life without crossing the line into an endorsement of a particular faith. All nine justices endorsed the concept of legislative prayer, with the four dissenters agreeing that the public forum “need not become a religion-free zone,” in the words of Justice Elena Kagan. But there was sharp disagreement after that, and the majority ruling could encourage public bodies to give more leeway to religious expression in their ceremonial prayers and less deference to the objections of religious minorities. The court’s five conservatives said legislative prayers need not be stripped of references to a specific religion — the prayers at issue often invoked Jesus Christ and the resurrection — and said those given the opportunity to pray before legislative meetings should be “unfettered” by what government officials find appropriate.

“I would hold that the government officials responsible for the above practices — that is, for prayer repeatedly invoking a single religion’s beliefs in these settings — crossed a constitutional line,” Kagan wrote.

“Absent a pattern of prayers that over time denigrate, proselytize, or betray an impermissible government purpose, a challenge based solely on the content of a particular prayer will not likely establish a constitutional violation,” Kennedy wrote. He was joined by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel A. Alito Jr.

A panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit found that “the town’s prayer practice must be viewed as an endorsement of a particular religious viewpoint” because the town had not reached out to a more diverse group of prayer-givers or made clear that the prayers did not represent the town’s beliefs.

Kagan’s dissent was both narrow — the town could have remedied its problems by finding more religiously diverse prayergivers, she said — and broad. The First Amendment’s promise, she wrote, is that “every citizen, irrespective of her religion, owns an equal share in her government.”

The Supreme Court decided 30 years ago that state legislatures may begin sessions with an invocation. But the new case asked whether there might need to be different rules for local council meetings, where citizens often come to ask for favorable official action.

The town residents who objected to the prayer practice, Susan Galloway and Linda Stephens, also argued that the court’s 1983 decision in Marsh v. Chambers authorized only inclusive, nonsectarian prayers to a “generic God.”

The decision split the court along its usual ideological divide and, to a lesser extent, by religion. All members of the majority are Catholic, as is Sotomayor. The other dissenters are Jewish. The case involved the New York town of Greece, just outside Rochester, where the council regularly opened its meetings with a prayer delivered by someone from the community. The speakers were recruited from local houses of worship, which were overwhelmingly Christian. In fact, every meeting from 1999 to 2007 opened with a Christian prayer, and even after two of the town’s residents filed a lawsuit, only a handful of non-Christians have delivered the invocation.

Kennedy began by referring to history: The same founders who wrote the First Amendment — with its prohibition on the establishment of a government religion but also protections for religious liberty — provided money for congressional chaplains, he said. “Legislative prayer has become part of our heritage and tradition, part of our expressive idiom, similar to the Pledge of Allegiance, inaugural prayer, or the recitation of ‘God save the United States and this honorable Court’ at the opening of this Court’s sessions,” he wrote.

And he said there was no evidence that Greece town council members “allocated benefits and burdens based on participation in the prayer.” The court’s majority split on how to judge whether prayers amount to coercion of nonbelievers. “The analysis would be different if town board members directed the public to participate in the prayers, singled out dissidents for opprobrium, or indicated that their decisions might be influenced by a person’s acquiescence in the prayer opportunity,” Kennedy wrote in a part of the opinion joined only by Roberts and Alito. Thomas and Scalia differed. They said that to the extent coercion is relevant to whether there is a violation of the Constitution’s establishment clause, “it is actual legal coercion that counts.” Peer pressure, they said, is not enough. Thomas, speaking only for himself, again questioned whether the establishment clause even applies to state and local governments. He allowed that as an initial matter, it “probably prohibits Congress from establishing a national religion.” Kagan said Greece’s policy violates the norm of religious equality — “the breathtakingly generous constitutional idea that our public institutions belong no less to the Buddhist or Hindu than to the Methodist or Episcopalian.” She said town hall meetings are different from sessions of legislatures or Congress. They are “occasions for ordinary citizens to engage with and petition their government, often on highly individualized matters.” Such meetings require more sensitivity to the prayers offered before a diverse audience, she said.

supplication: O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from the punishment of the grave; I seek refuge in Thee from the trial of the Antichrist; I seek refuge in Thee from the trial of life and the trial of death; O Allah, I seek refuge in Thee from sin and debt. (Muslim)

No one is granted a gift better and more comprehensive than patience. (Bukhari and Muslim)

Seek Refuge From Trials One should not solicit trials from Allah. No matter how pious one might be, he or she should not be proud of having unshakable faith but always remain humble and ask Allah to guide him and to keep him on the right path. Indeed, if it was not for the mercy and guidance of Allah, he could not have remained a believer and a practicing Muslim. Therefore, he should often ask for forgiveness from Allah for sins and mistakes committed so that He does not take him to task for those mistakes. In the Qur’an, Allah teaches the believers to make the following supplication: Our Lord! Take us not to task if we forget or commit mistakes. Our Lord! Lay not on us a burden such as You laid on those gone before us. Our Lord! Lay not on us burdens which we do not have the power to bear. And overlook our faults, and forgive us, and have mercy upon us. (2:286) The Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam, the most pious and faithful of all believers, frequently used to make the following

(Muslim) The Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam once grabbed Abdullah ibn ‘Umar by his shoulders and said: Be in the world as if you were a stranger or a wayfarer. (Bukhari)

When Calamity Befalls, Remember That It Is a Test. Any affliction that a believer suffers is a test from Allah. If he does not recognize the test, then he may feel despair and thus fail the test. The believer should particularly keep in mind the following verses from the Qur’an that remind that every single believer will be tested: We shall try you until We test those among you who strive their utmost and persevere in patience; and we shall try your reported (mettle). (47:31)

Be Ready For Trials While a believer should seek refuge in Allah from trials, he should, at the same time, be always ready for trials. His supplications for forgiveness might save him from some trials, but there will still be trials that he will face for sure. Therefore, a believer should always be mentally prepared for afflictions and calamities so that he can pass the tests with success. Always Have Focus on the Hereafter If one is afflicted with a calamity, he should remember that our life is short and our ultimate destination is the Hereafter. Therefore, he should remain patient, ask Allah for help, and remember that he will be meeting Him soon: Who say when afflicted with calamity: “To Allah we belong and to Him is

When calamity strikes a believer, he should take all steps necessary to remedy the situation. Having faith and trust in Allah never means inaction or complacency with difficulties. This has been made quite clear in both the Qur’an and the examples of the Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam. From a spiritual perspective, the very first thing that the believer should do is turn to Allah for forgiveness. One of the most beautiful and effective supplications that he can make is the supplication made by Prophet Jonah (called Yunus in the Qur’an). When the people of Nineveh rejected the message of Jonah to worship Allah alone, Jonah left the city out of despair, expecting that Allah’s punishment on them was imminent. That was a mistake, for a Prophet can never forsake his mission and leave without the consent of Allah. This was only a mistake in judgment, and not a rebellious action. Nevertheless, for a Prophet or a man of piety, even a minor mistake comes out to be significant in contrast to the faith and piety that Allah has blessed him or her with. Jonah was soon consumed by a whale. It was a dark night, and he was in the dark stomach in the dark bottom of the sea. Stricken with this calamity, Jonah realized his mistake and immediately turned to Allah for forgiveness. He made a supplication that was simple and short. Nevertheless, its words carry so much significance that this small supplication is considered to be the “Mother of all supplications”. From the darkest chamber

of worship except Allah. Besides Him, he can turn to no one for help – no king, no judge, and no personal attorney. If there is anyone who is capable of forgiveness and help, that is only Allah, the Supreme Authority of the entire universe. Second, he declared that Allah is above all blames and shortcomings. Allah is not to be blamed for his situations, for He never commits a wrong against anyone. He is above and beyond all faults and shortcomings. Lastly, he admitted that he has committed a mistake. This admittance and recognition of one’s own fault is perhaps the most important element in seeking forgiveness. For Jonah, this admission did not merely come out from his lips but also from the bottom of his heart. This short supplication was so heavy in weight that Allah turned to him in forgiveness and delivered him from these three layers of darkness.1

There is no God but You! Glory be to You! I have done wrong. (21:87) This short supplication has three important components. First, Jonah recognized that there is no other authority or power worthy

The believer should try to make as much tahajjud prayer as possible and ask Allah for help and forgiveness, as this is one the best times to make prayers and supplications:

The first kinds are those who desperately seek Allah’s help and forgiveness when in calamity or peril. Then when Allah delivers them from their calamity, they forget Allah and go back to their usual life of indifference to Allah and the Hereafter. About these people, Allah says: When trouble touches a man he cries unto Us (in all postures) lying down on his side or sitting or standing. But when

Sincere admittance of mistakes and repentance, thus, is a necessary condition for supplications to be heard. Allah is indeed the Most Merciful and He is quick to forgive His slaves. Ask for Help With Patience and Salat After faith and trust in Allah, the most import quality that a believer needs during calamity and affliction is patience. Patience is such a virtue that it is frequently mentioned both in the Qur’an and the hadith. Indeed, the Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam said that it is the best gift that one can receive from Allah: No one is granted a gift better and more comprehensive than patience. (Bukhari and Muslim)

One should never demoralize an afflicted believer by saying that Allah is displeased with him or that he has committed some sin for which he is being punished. of the whale’s stomach, he cried out to Allah:

Seek (Allah's) help with patient perseverance and prayer. (2:45)

And for part of the night also praise Him, and at the retreat of the stars! (52:49) And during part of the night (also) celebrate His praises and (so likewise) after the postures of adoration. (50:40) And part of the night prostrate thyself to Him; and glorify Him a long night through. (76:26) When people and all other creatures around are deep in sleep, it is only the believer who keeps awake and is immersed in worshiping Allah . In that still silence of the dead of the night, it is, as if, only two are engaged in a private conversation: one who begs for help and mercy, and the Other Who listens to his prayers. Avoid the Two Pitfalls

In many places in the Qur’an, Allah asks the believer to seek His help with patience and salat, such as: O ye who believe! seek help with patient perseverance and prayer: for Allah is with those who patiently persevere. (2:153)

Truly man was created very impatient: fretful when evil touches him, and niggardly when good reaches him. (70:19-21) There are two categories of people that a righteous believer should not slip into.

We have solved his trouble he passes on his way as if he had never cried to Us for a trouble that touched him! Thus do the deeds of transgressors seem fair in their eyes! (10:12) The second kinds are those who worship Allah and follow his commandments so long as they enjoy a comfortable or trouble-free life. Then when calamities strike them, they break down and become indifferent to Allah and his commandments out of anger and frustration. It is, as if, they deserve a comfortable life in return for their worshipping of Allah . About them, says Allah : Among men is he who worships Allah, while remaining on the borderline; if any good befalls him, he is satisfied; but if a trial afflicts him, he utterly turns away. He will incur loss both of this world and the Hereafter. That indeed is a clear loss. (21:11) Falling into one these two categories is an utter failure. calamity, he remains patient and pleased with Allah, and when something good happens to him, he thanks Allah. Thus he always earns rewards and Allah’s good pleasure while he lives in this world. The Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam said: How wonderful is the case of a believer! There is good for him in everything, and this is not the case with anyone except a believer. If prosperity attends him, he expresses gratitude to Allah and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he endures it patiently and that is better for him. (Muslim) Keep in Mind the Eventual Success Verily with every difficulty, there is relief. (94:6)

OPINION | 33 Verily, the Hereafter will be better for thee than the present. (93:4) Show Kindness to Those Who are Afflicted If someone is afflicted with a calamity, other believers should often visit or call him or her and inquire about his (or her) welfare. One should never demoralize an afflicted believer by saying that Allah is displeased with him or that he has committed some sin for which he is being punished. Instead, believers should tell him good words that will uplift his spirit. They should tell him about the fact that Allah tests those whom He loves, and that it is the righteous believers who suffer the most in this life so that they can get Paradise in the Hereafter. The believers should sympathize with him and offer their help. The Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam, out of his sympathy for the afflicted, said:

It is a source of great comfort for a believer to know that his or her afflictions will one day come to an end and there will be relief for him. Therefore, he should keep this eventuality in mind and go through his trial with patience, forbearance, and faith in Allah. There will be a day – whether in this world or the Next – when he will come out victorious and successful for passing the test. For a believer in affliction, that is the ultimate success that awaits him. Says Allah :

If you were to sell fruits to your brother and these are stricken with calamity, it is not permissible for you to get anything from him. (Muslim)

Most important improvements of all are amending one’s character and conduct and turning to Allah in obedience. There is also spiritual benefit in remembering the past trials as that will make the believer always remain conscious of the fact that life is short with all its vicissitudes and he will soon return to Allah . The Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam said that remembering past trials can even earn him reward: If any Muslim man or woman suffers a calamity and keeps it in his memory, even if it happened a long time ago, saying each time it is remembered, 'We belong to Allah and to Him do we return,' Allah, who is Blessed and Exalted will give a fresh reward each time it is said, equivalent to the reward when it happened. (Ahmad) Epilogue: Life is a Testing Ground

For one who submits, a mere declaration or display of belief will not be taken for success, but his or her heart and soul will for sure be put to test. Allah will test him to see whether he follows His commandments or his own desires; whether he lives a righteous and godly life or lives according to what his nafs (self ) dictates; whether the faith he displays is firmly rooted in his heart or is it merely on the surface and thus is knocked off at a slight wind; whether he will continue to have faith and love of Allah when in calamity as he does when in comfort; whether he will continue to remember and worship him if given bounties and comforts of life as he does when he lives a modest life. Allah will test him to see if his faith, trust, and love of Him is unconditional or is it conditioned with good health and comfortable life free from stress and anxiety. For a righteous Muslim, this life is a testing ground where he will continue to be tested until he meets Allah . For him, tests will be done right here on earth while he lives, and not after he dies. He knows that as soon as death arrives and he steps into the Next World, his tests are over. There, he only receives the results of his tests, and then enjoys (or suffers) the fruits of his deeds that he committed during a short span of time called Life.

Brother Jeelani was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Shaheen and his son Zubair and daughters Hafza, Huzaefah, Ghazala and his grandchildren. Brother Jeelani was one of the founding members of the PGMA who, in 1994 with a few community brothers, took the steps necessary to acquire property in Lanham and start the organization called the Prince George's Muslim Association.
