Community News Advice to College Hopefuls: Start Planning In Eighth Grade MCC Seminar Brings Real World College, Career Advice to Youth

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Aligarh Muslim University Alumni Association, in collaboration with the MCC Youth, arranged a College Admissions & Career Guidance Seminar on May 31, 2014 for middle school and high school students at the Muslim Community Center in Silver Springs, MD. Previously, the organization has held similar workshops with packed audiences at the Islamic Center of Maryland, the Islamic Society of Frederick and at MCC. The panel was a mix of professionals and current students, from Ivy Leagues to local state institutions.

Muslim Link Staff Reporter An imam and chaplain, who came from the streets to Islam and carved a place into the hearts of his colleagues, friends, teachers and his congregation, passed away in Richmond, Virginia.

Imam Muhammad Salaam’s Janazah prayer was held at Masjid Bilal, 400 Chimborazo Blvd, Richmond, VA, immediately after Dhuhr Salat at 1:30 PM on Tuesday May 20, 2014. Masjid Bilal is the first masjid built in the city of Richmond and Imam Salaam had been at the helm since 2004. He was 59.

Born Calvin Leon Tyler, he changed

The impact he had on young men was immediate, because he came from the street life to Islam. Malik says Salaam lived his religion: never arrogant, his mannerism spoke volumes to his character. his name in 1976 to Muhammad Shaaf Salaam, in order to build his character around it’s meaning (one who praises Allah-God much, one who intends to heal, and peace) according to his bio on the Masjid Bilal website.

The burial was held at Al-Barzakh Cemetery in Caroline County, VA.

Umair Khan, a university student in Richmond who attended the janazah conveyed, “Mashallah, [t]here were so many people at the Imam's Salatul Janazah It was really cool because Masjid Bilal [was] full; [people] were even praying on the neighborhood streets.”

Mauri’ Saalakhan, an D.C. based activist,

met Imam Salaam almost 20 years ago when he was living in Frederick and working at the prisons in Hagerstown.

Introduced through Imam Safi Khan, he would talk to the Muslim inmates under Salaam’s jurisdiction at his request. That's where their friendship began. Years later >> Imam Pg 22

MCC Aims to Be Model for Senior Supportive Masajid

“Your arms and hearts are open to all,” said Leventhal as he presented Negm with the certificate in the MCC main hall.

According to Money Magazine, Montgomery County, MD is the best place to age in the United States. The county has the highest life expectancy in the country, 81.31 years, right after Marin County in California.

The Seniors Program at MCC wants it to be the best place for Muslim seniors as well. The program has become the best practices senior’s group for Islamic Centers to model around the country.

“The well being of the Muslim population of seniors is immensely valuable,” says ‘Mama’ Mona, the woman who has made it her life goal to serve the seniors of her community.

On April, 28, 2014, she received The Montgomery County Neal Potter Path of Achievement Award and a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition "for her service to the residents of Montgomery County.” The award recognizes extraordinary volunteerism

Most of the seniors involved in the program are first generation immigrants. They represent several countries and have little knowledge of aging issues, services and resources. and was presented to nine honorees for their service to Montgomery County at the Annual Montgomery Serves Awards event.

Muslim Link Staff Reporter As he settled down for his lunch at noon, Aamir Khan*, a grandfather from Howard County, MD received a phone call. As he is diabetic, he needs to have his meals on time so he didn’t pick up the phone. A loud aggressive voice echoed from the answering machine that shook the calm computer programmer up.

Victims are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a preloaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license.

“This is the IRS.” His instinct told him to not pick up the phone.

“This is John Smith from the special commission selected by IRS in reference to taxpayers committing crimes on their tax return[s] and we have been contract[ed] as a third party to resolve [current] cases,” stated the terse voice.

After accusing Khan of committing fraud on his tax return, the voice continued,

“it is such a big crime, if you do not cooperate we have the authority to inform the Columbia police department…and arrest you, if you don’t call this number in 45 minutes.”

They left a phone number.

Many of these scammers have the last 4 digits of social security numbers making the calls sound legitimate. A victim of identity theft a few years, he is quite wary

of scams.

“I [was] shook up for the first few minutes,” says Khan, “but being an educated person and with Allah’s guidance I didn’t make contact.”

The call was so realistic and if he hadn’t lived in this country for 20 years and known the rules, he would have been seriously worried. He called his children and they advised him to report the call to

Saeed Sheikh received a similar call in his Valencia, CA home, as did Atifa Chiragh in Silver Springs, MD. The callers had thick accents and the calls came on home telephone lines with an IRS toll-free number spoofing on their caller IDs. An elder from the Muslim Community Center (MCC) recently fell for the scam and sent $500 to the scammers, which prompted Board of Directors member Rashid Makhdoom to contact the MCC seniors and warn them about this scam.

Maher Amin* was instructed to wire transfer $500, which he immediately did. Then another call came in to "immediately" wire transfer $3,000 if he wants to stay out of jail. He rushed to his bank before it closed to wire transfer.

Renovations Under Way at ADAMS The ADAMS (All Dulles Area Muslims) Main Center in Sterling, Virginia is going through renovations.

The front steps staircase is freshed up with new tiles, while the exterior of the building as well as some interior spaces including main hall, conference rooms and classrooms have a new coat of paint.

The center is 25,000 sq ft and has a masjid that can serve 750 people with 375 parking spaces, a community multipurpose hall, library, and a gymnasium.

Over the course of 25 years, ADAMS has gone from one location servicing a few hundred people to serving thousands of people across the entire Northern Virginia region. The main center is scheduled for expansion in the near future, however current building is in need of repairs.

“We are currently scheduled for parking

repairs and paving and installing new carpeting in the daily prayer areas for both men and women sections. Repair work for the parking lot will begin on Saturday, May 31, but will not impact traffic for Saturday and Sunday schools,” said Amer Ahmad, the Director of Operations.

One couple sponsored a project and Ahmed has asked the ADAMS community to follow their footsteps and adopt a project to complete the remaining projects which will upgrade and repair the center.

Other projects planned include updating the sound system, wood dividers for the men and women’s section and the maintenance of the air conditioning and heating system.

Dar Al-Taqwa Pushes to Double Parking Space with Fundraiser

By Muslim Link Staff Reporters Throngs of people gathered at the River Hill High School to support Dar al Taqwa on the 18th of May, 2014, attending the first fundraiser in four years for the largest Islamic Center in Howard County.

The purpose was to raise money to develop the parking lot for the property in Ellicott City, which currently has 91 parking spots. Many visitors park in the mud and cars have gotten stuck in the past. The current project will park add 98 spaces. Removal of trees has already begun.

After snacks served in the school cafeteria, the crowd was escorted to the auditorium. The program commenced with a melodious recitation of the Quran

nasheed reciter, Junaid Jamshed live, a majority of families from Pakistani backgrounds attended the event, filling up the large auditorium. Despite the very diverse community of DAT, most were not seen at the event. Insiders noted that the majority of folks who attended were from other communities and states. Some speakers billed to speak at the event also did not attend.

Dr. Aamir Sheikh, DAT’s scholar in residence, reminded the audience that Allah gives us reminders of giving in the path of Allah. Baltimore Social Service Agency Marks a Decade of Helping While Homeless

By Muslim Link Staff Reporters Sometimes he sits in a parked car and counsels, other times in the family’s basement. He receives calls for emergency help at all hours. Imam Hasan Amin and his Muslim Social Services Agency runs without an office or facilities, but that hasn’t stopped him or his team from serving Baltimore City and the surrounding areas for ten years.

At their first fundraiser held on May 17, 2014, at the classy Rawling Fulton Club House, MSSA celebrated ten years of providing neighborly needs and thanked the organizations that have partnered with MSSA to serve the community and to raise the funds to continue their impactful social service programming. Total Health Care, Masjid Saffat, Masjid ul Haqq, Islamic Community School, the Women’s Affairs of Al Muntahina, Al Muslimaat al

Nisaa, Islamic Relief, Church of Latter Day Saints, and the Red Cross, were recognized amongst others.

Imam Amin, the Executive Director was presented by a Governor’s citation but reminded everyone that the reward is with Allah. According to Imam Amin, since its establishment in 2003, Muslim Social Services Agency assisted over 10,000 individuals with eviction prevention, rental/security deposit, prisoner re-entry, food, clothing and furniture purchases and a variety of other social services needs.

Muslim Social Services Agency provides a comprehensive response to the everincreasing number of people losing their jobs, homes and health care services. Its goal is to improve and enrich the quality of life of those in need of resources and services. It provides resources and services meeting the educational, social, housing, employment, counseling,

medical and mental health needs of its clients.

Imam Hasan Amin’s family has lived the life; they know ‘the rats and roaches’ and can empathize like no one else. His son recalled how dealers would hide drugs in the bushes in their front yard, in the gas tank of their car. “My community turned into a battle ground,” said Karim Amin, President of MSSA, as he recalled how

his mother’s maternal instinct saved him from a drive by shooting in front of their home.

His younger brother, Asim Amin who works with the City Public School system bussing special needs children, recently joined the agency and has plans >> decade Pg 16

The bank advised him to call the Police's non-emergency number, which he did from bank’s telephone. The police informed him that he should not send any more money.

Makhdoom had also received a message on his voicemail asking him to "immediately" contact the "IRS" suggesting a problem with his social security number.

Many seniors and recent immigrants are especially vulnerable and on limited incomes and scams like these can cause major problems for them.

As of March 20, the Treasury Inspector General for Taxpayer Administration reported that it has received reports of over 20,000 contacts related to this scam.

Imam Amin and his wife Sr Zakia dream of opening branches of the agency, in other cities around the country. These offices would receive guidance, training and support from MSSA. “We are homeless ourselves,” quipped Amin raising funds for an office for MSSA, so clients can have privacy during their consultations and they can house a permanent food pantry. Events usually take place at the Masjid Ul-Haqq in Baltimore as well as other locations, including the local shelters. The agency would like to have more staff, case managers and social workers who can look at the needs of the individuals and connect them with resources and services.

“This is a flagrant misuse of technology,” says Khan who was one of the pioneers in mainframe programming in the 70s.

Khan called the FBI in Columbia, MD. The local FBI office informed him that authorities were working on this scam.

Omar Usman of Dallas, TX tweets that he received a call, as have many people in his community. Most know that it is a scam, but others have sent in money.

“My mother received a call and just [yelled] at them,” says Anees Ahmad of Oregon who received the call in her Portland, OR home.

Ms. Byrd is a part of the 47 million Americans who are suffering from food insecurity. In order to address this epidemic MSSA distributed over 10,000 pounds of food to families with need on Sunday, November 24, 2013. The next event is planned on September 13, 2014.

MSSA is planning to expand their food distribution program.

Attendees who have known of MSSA work for the past decade were happy to see the growth and admired the team for their consistency. “Lots of people have been helped by them in the neighborhood and the surrounding area,” said Saleema Amin.

Siddiqui, a pre-med adviser for MIT who enjoys working in career guidance, also sat on the panel.

Another panelist, Irma Hashmi is currently pursuing the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree. A graduate of Centennial High School, she moved several times and spoke about her experience adjusting to new school environments. “I realized that I needed to adapt quickly,” she shared.

She studied at University of Maryland, Baltimore County where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages and Linguistics. “I want to be pre med, but also wanted to [explore] outside the world of science; to develop skills make sure you take classes outside your field,” she said.

Rabia Ahmad is a rising senior majoring in Speech Language Pathology and Audiology at Loyola University. Ahmad was raised in Anne Arundel County and is a graduate of Roland Park County School in Baltimore, MD. Some of the panelists had experience as exchange students: Ahmad studied at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia and Hashmi at the University of Malaysia. They discussed their experiences and how it broadened their vision and helped them become better students.

Bilal Naved, a senior majoring in Bioengineering at University of Maryland College Park, is a member of the Integrated Life Sciences Honors Program has contributed to many of AMU’s panels. He started with an icebreaker about his favorite book, the Great Gatsby, where reality, dreams and a little magic intersect. He played with invisible deck with a middle schooler to stimulate the audience’s imagination and encourage them to actualize an idea into reality.

S. Naved, who moderated the panel, explained the college admissions process and the importance of the complete application. “They don’t see you or meet you, they make the determination if you will be accepted or not based on the application. That [college] application should be reflecting you.”

The panelists agreed that students need a game plan and should start planning for college starting from 8th grade on. They should know when they are going to take the SAT or ACT exam (latest October of senior year) and who will give them references.

Naved said that there is no substitute for good grades. An automatic sort is done by computer programs to categorize students according to their GPA. He urged the students take as many AP courses and participate in extra curricular activities ie. sports, and SSL hours (volunteers hours).

Volunteering is an important part of development of a student. It helps develop skills and reflects your commitment to the community.

The attendees elaborated on their internships and volunteer experiences.

Bilal volunteers at Montgomery General Hospital and has volunteered abroad in medical clinics in rural villages of Ecuador.

Internships and volunteering also give the student opportunities to meet people who can mentor them and give them references and provide work experience. They can help narrow down where one wants to work after they graduate, conveyed Ahmed, as she reassured a father in the audience whose daughter was trying out several different internships in high school as the variety of experiences helps students find potential careers. She herself has interned both in a school and hospital setting.

Being an active member of a wide variety of clubs in schools shows diversity in an applicant. And rounds up the candidate’s application and personality, advised the panel. Actively involved in student and dorm government and his college Muslim Student Association, Dr Siddiqui said this experience helped him grow.

Develop your writing skills, suggested Hashmi, as the essay is an integral part of the college application. A good essay has a good story.

“You build upon your life story [and they] want you be candid. Let [the admissions office] learn more about you in your essay.”

Siddiqui had a lot of success in his academic career. In high school, he enjoyed playing basketball, and didn’t graduate at the top of his class, but says that he had great mentors. He competed in many science and debate competitions and says that those activities help push a candidate up to the next level.

“Develop what you are good at,” stressed Dr Siddiqui. Aside from good SAT scores and AP and honors classes, he conducted research in tissue engineering and believes that is what got him the admission into the prestigious schools he attended. “I did something interesting.”

He stated that it should not be the expectation that everyone will attend Harvard Medical School. Answering a question from the audience, he said that if a student will excel in a state school than that institute may be a better choice for him or her than an Ivy League, where competition s cut-throat.

Bilal Naved said he dabbled in a million and explained the difference between interests and passions. “You will know when you have found your passion; you will dream about it at night,” he stated.

A key issue discussed was that the Muslim community cannot continue producing just doctors and engineers, if we want to have an integrated community. Muslims communities need students in diverse fields to fill the needs of the Muslims and of other faiths.

Alternate careers were discussed. Ahmed shared that she started out as a premed student doing several internships at the NIH, but once she experienced college, she realized that her passion lay elsewhere. She has a sister who is autistic and decided to study speech pathology.

The panel was well received by the audience. Homeschoolers, Islamic School students as well as students from other private and public schools attended the forum.

The Imam of MCC reminded the audience to also consider the final destination in the after life and make sure all career choices reflect Islamic values and bring the student closer to God. An attendee did complain about the lack of ethnic diversity in the panel, as they were all of South Asian background.

Since the sponsoring organization was an educational institute from South Asian, others in the audience understood.

But the references to the immigrant experience made some convert and indigenous Muslims feel excluded from the discussion. The organizers listened to the suggestions and appreciated the feedback. When communities intersect at forums of mutual interest, that is when understanding is fostered and needs are evaluated.

The panelists discussed career options and their experiences of parental involvement in their career and school choices. The panel did include a young man who had dropped out of university to follow his artistic passion and was successful. One panelist said that she was forced into a medical career by her parents and was not given an option.

Mir said that she didn’t plan on becoming an attorney. She created a resume for herself while in school and chose activities that aided her making her resume robust, which included journalism, starting a book club, and managing her high school volleyball team. Along the way she realized that she wanted to study law. She completed law school while juggling marriage, babies, and helping her mother set up and run an assisted living center.

A major takeaway for the students attending was that hard work, passion, and a commitment to the community can reap rewards academically.

In partnership with these groups, they launched an Education Outreach Campaign to educate seniors and their family members about some of the key aging related issues of concern, how to negotiate a complex service delivery system and where to go for needed services and resources.

The MCC Seniors program also partnered with the imams from the various masjids to deliver outreach messages, such as the 311 number for county wide resources and the 240-777-3000 for Aging and Disability Services.

The MCC Seniors Program recognized several people for services to the Community and as their partners: “Ike Leggett and the County Council Members Leventhal and Floreen, whose policy, commitment to our community's issues of concern have opened doors of possibilities for our members,” says Negm.

She handed out two awards for Outstanding Services to the MCC Senior Community to Dr. John J. Kenney, Chief Aging and Disability Services and Dr. Odile Brunetto, Director of the Montgomery County Area Agency on Aging.

Pazit Aviv, Aging and Disability Services Village Coordinator has offered great service to the MCC community. Her passion was acknowledged and she was presented with a bouquet of flowers.

Azad Ejaz, one of those who ‘make it happen’ everyday at the MCC Clinic, reminisced to the crowd about his first meeting with Councilman Leventhal in his office. “I really didn’t pay attention to a politician promise, we didn’t [even] know how to write [a] grant,” said Ejaz.

11 years later, MCC Clinic appointed Dr. Mirza Hussain Ali Baig as the Quality Assurance Manager for the award winning Clinic. They will open an urgent care and serve the public 7 days a week, starting in August.

Dr. Sarah Gotbaum, President and Founder of the Montgomery County Older Women's League, who celebrated her 90th Birthday during the event was also given the spotlight and presented with flowers.

Negm also recognized members of the Stonegate Community. Her neighbors from various ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds who came together more than 45 years ago and opened their doors, arms, and hearts to each others.

“We celebrated diversity together when diversity was not so cool,” quipped Negm as she asked the community members to stand up for recognition.

They had helped cook some of the delicious food served at the event.

Executive Chef Colin Suser offered his services free of charge. He Worked tirelessly with a group of volunteers from the community to prepare the feast.

The food was served by MCC Interfaith Chair Saber Rahman’s children.

Special thanks were made to the volunteers from within MCC and the various agencies who helped put the Health Fair together, especially the Planning Team who helped organize the event.

The Senior Ambassadors and the Young Ambassadors were also recognized—they designed the posters, the signs, logo, program, agenda and decorated the hall.

Over the 3 years, the group trained and graduated 14 Senior Ambassadors to reach out to the sick and isolated seniors, provide emergency transportation and connect them with needed services. They have also developed a comprehensive resource guide of senior services.

An initiative in the works is the MCC Senior Program Food Pantry, in collaboration with the Montgomery County Muslim Foundation and the Young and Senior Ambassadors.

To involve the youth, the seniors started an intergenerational organic vegetable garden, in which the Young Ambassadors play a major role.

Young Ambassadors also provide senior programs with various support, especially in social media. With their help, the seniors established a web page where the resource guide is placed for wider access.

Others youngsters support the food pantry food collection and distribution.

Tackling underprivileged community members was high on the 2013-2014 agenda. An Outreach Committee was established to identify seniors and families most in need and work closely with the MCC Zakat Committee, the Young Adults and Professional committee, the Youth program and the MCC Clinic to help reach out, collect and deliver emergency food, funds, and offer mental health and social services. Aging and Disability Services and other County Social Service Agencies also partnered with the Outreach Committee.

One major new MCC Senior Program is the Healthy Aging Initiative. “Our Seniors are calling for a healthy lifestyle with a holistic approach to health. In partnership with MCC Medical Clinic and with above mentioned partners, in shaa Allah, we will be combining health promotion disease prevention outreach messages together with behavioral health activities,” says Ngem.

Art made by the seniors was displayed for purchase around the hall. An optional tour of the clinic and masjid was offered to visitors.

A health fair was set up after the banquet in the gazebo located at the back of the center.

when Salaam became imam of Masjid Bilal, he maintained the open door policy of his predecessor in that office (Imam Gregg Abdus-Salaam) for his brother, Saalakhan.

He was a peaceful, pious, beautiful human being, because of his character and mannerisms it was hard to believe that he had any other life other than as a Muslim, shared Abdul Malik.

“Biggest funeral I have ever seen in my life,” said close friend Carroll Abdul Malik. “Imam Siraj Wahhaj was expected from New York. It was diverse from immigrants to indigenous Muslims— [Black] and Caucasian—as well as people of other faiths,” narrated Abdul Malik, a close friend and prison chaplain who runs the Muslim Chaplains Services of Virginia.

Masjid Bilal is located in the Church Hill area, a predominantly African American neighborhood; not a ghetto, says Abdul Malik, but not privileged either. Drugs are a major cause of concern for the residents.

He met Imam Salaam when Abdul Malik came home to Richmond from prison in the mid seventies.

The two friends shared a passion for prison work and used to visit prisons together in Virginia, until Imam Salaam’s health started faltering. A lot of his time was also occupied with his work at the masjid.

The masjid has a Food Bank Project, partnering with the Central Virginia Foodbank, and has been the recipient of numerous community awards. This effort feeds more 1000 people annually and has done so for the past 12 years. This initiative has relied upon the volunteer efforts of many Churchill residents working side by side with members of the Muslim community.

Imam Salaam was very open to working other religious communities, police and political figures.

Imam Salaam had an extensive background as a corrections officer in the State of Virginia. From 1978-1988, Salaam was the Deputy Sheriff in Richmond City Jail, where he never hid that he was Muslim.

Imam Salaam also ran a program called “Fatherhood and Family Consideration”, under a grant known as the Fatherhood Initiative. They worked with fathers to help get involved with their children, to bridge the gap between children and their fathers.

Imam Khan recalls how Salaam and him would work harder than the Christian chaplains. “We drove to the roughest parts of Philadelphia to buy bean pies in the middle of the night, so the prisoners could celebrate Eid with the pies that they loved.” Even the non Muslims came and listened to their lectures.

“I have never met anyone who didn’t like him,” says Malik, “he was the best example of Islam that I ever saw.”

Humble, modest, and very committed to whatever he promised, Malik says that he would help anyone who he could and never remind them of his favors.

Imam Safi Khan and his wife Sameera Hingora met the Salaams in Hagerstown, MD where they were both stationed as prison chaplains for the MD Dept. of Corrections. Here Salaam became a Certified Trainer for Trainers for the state of MD and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission’s designated personnel to hear and recommend solutions for disputes between wardens, staff, and inmates. He also conducted services and counseled inmates on a daily basis.

“We used to talk a lot. We would have classes about sunnah, importance of hadith, history of Quran, aqeedah and how it ties into everything various Arabic terms,” recalled Imam Khan. Salaam

“I respected and admired his character.

Being a prison chaplain is not a normal job,” said Imam Safi Khan,”you can be killed at anytime.”

“Imam Salaam impressed me as an even tempered public servant who was deeply committed to his community. The number and diversity of people who attended his janazah and burial exemplified the widely held regard for him. May Allah forgive his sins and grant him Jannah. Ameen,” reflected Saalakhan.

According to his obituary in the TimesDispatch, Imam Salaam’s survivors include his wife of 28 years, Myra Salaam; two daughters, Aishah Salaam and Anisah Salaam; four sons, Kareem Horton, Muhammad Malik Salaam, Muhammad Ibn Salaam and Tyshan Darden; his mother, Jeanette Smith; four sisters, Joann Whitley, Vera Tyler, Cynthia Gold and Andrea Ingram; four brothers, Clarence Frye, Elsura Abdus Salaam, Mamum Salaam and Randy Tyler; and four grandchildren.

Sh Abu Nar of the Dar al Uloom in Buffalo, New York was the keynote speaker. He started the fundraiser with a $10,000 dollar donation from Tajud-deen Sabree. His jokes and selfdeprecating style had the audience in smiles. $141,320 was raised by the end of the evening for the extension of the parking lot.

Dinner was served in the cafeteria and the evening ended late as Jamshed spoke and recited poetry into the night.

The Islamic Circle of North America is grateful for the time and effort exerted by every single speaker at the convention.

Together with the main sessions of the convention, there were a total of 128 sessions over the three day period. Most of the parallel sessions were self contained series, such as the “Social Justice Series”, “Community Series”, “Parenting Series”, and so forth. There were also programs held solely in Spanish, Bangla, Arabic and Urdu which were popular among attendees.

One of the most packed parallel sessions was the Window to Islam series which sought to provide a space for individuals to gather in a spirit of dialogue and honest enquiry, and discuss a range of socioreligious issues pertaining to Islam and America.

In the session titled “A Treasured Path”, Dr. Dalia Fahmy’s speech moved the entire room to reorient their perspective on women. “Her talk was incredibly empowering,” said a Young Muslims sister attending the session. “She not only engaged in shifting perception, she imparted practical advice for us to implement in real life.”

The yearly tradition of the brother’s only Midnight Basketball Tournament was, as always, a tremendous success. Hundreds of young Muslims competed for hours to finally determine one winning team.

ICNA hosted its annual “Scholars and Community Leaders Recognition Lunch” on Sunday at 12pm, to honor the lifelong commitment of several individuals to the national and international Muslim community. This year’s awardees were Dr. Teepu Siddique, Professor Anees Ahmed, Dr. Tariq Ramadan, and Br. Iqbal Baqai. The later was awarded posthumously; his sons accepted on his behalf.

The Muslim Children of North America hosted a number of programs, including interactive drum lessons and an animal exhibit. The most popular program was Camali, who, in addition to setting up an area for bungee jumping, performed a show on Sunday to a large audience of eager children. For the first time, organizers also added sessions for individuals among the age range of 1115 termed Young Muslims Junior.

The annual Quran Competition pulled 130 children together from 20 different states to compete in three age categories.

The 12 winning participants went home with trophies and cash prizes equaling several thousand dollars. The top winner, an eight year-old girl, was the youngest among the contestants and she opened the Sunday evening keynote session of the convention.

Service.”, to provoke reflection among the attendees.

This was succeeded by the entertainment session, which consisted of spoken word

by Hamza Siddiqui, nasheed recitals by several individuals, and stand-up comedy

by Mohammed Amer. Amer’s hilarious descriptions of his Palestinian family and the insane traffic of Cairo captivated the audience.

Young Muslims held a trademark Secret Session parallel to the main entertainment session. The attendees packed the room from wall to wall and posted questions about a diverse range of issues. One of the individuals felt it was the best session at the entire convention due to its intimate nature.

“It was a great convention,” said Dr. Tariq Ramadan who was attending the ICNA-MAS convention for the first time.

“JazakAllah Khayr for doing what you are doing and for serving the American Muslim society in America,” he said.

Dr. Mirza is also member of the Board of Directors, University Islamic Financial Corporation and is a member of the Board of Trustees, George Mason University Foundation, Inc. The talk centered on building a culture of saving, avoiding debt and giving, by delaying gratification in the Muslim family.

He reminded the audience that everything can be forgiven by Allah’s mercy, except when one hurts someone or does not pay them back. Then that person has to forgive for the transgression against them.

So how should an average person not borrow, save money and invest it? The key is to delay gratification; delay having fun as suggested by Dr Mirza. Living like this requires a lot of patience, sacrifice, controlling your nafs.

“When children request the expensive shoes tell them it’s not about the shoes, it’s about the person that can jump high,” he said.

He suggested sitting down with the family and asking what is the mission of our family. Developing a Family Mission Statement—it’s a way of life for living in the family—includes the attitudes, feelings, behavior by everyone so no one is surprised when decisions are made. It’s very important for parents to talk with kids about their ways of thinking about money and philosophies— talk about who is going to do what if one of the family member dies?

On earning, Dr Mirza said that Muslims are required to earn, to provide for the family and work hard. To strive to earn a livelihood is an obligation after the obligation of prayer, he stated.

There are three ways to earn: when we work for others and earn money (90% of us do that); be an entrepreneur and have other people work for you and you give the rightful pay for the workers and the rest comes as profit for you; last way is to invest money—you make money through investments which is less than one percent of people.

“We should refrain from borrowing. There are many hadiths about debt—Rasul Allah saw used to pray [for protection] from debt and the anger of men; he wouldn’t do the janazah until debt is paid by the family or others,” said Mirza.

In Bible and Quran, we learn an important lesson from the story of Prophet Yousuf: save when you have ample quantity, store it and use it at the time of need. Everyone should have a plan to save—living on less than his or her income.

“You should have [a] 20 percent down payment and a 15 year Islamic mortgage,” suggested Dr Mirza. Only buy a place if you are planning to live in it for more than 5 years. otherwise you may incur unnecessary costs.

Dr. Mirza spoke at length about how Islamic requirements make us better investors based on his experience. “When we look at Islamic investments—we have a lot of requirement restrictions to follow… generally speaking, we cannot invest in anything to do with tobacco, pork, weapons, interest, pornography, gambling, casinos, illegal drugs, any product that is harmful to human beings,

After the talk he answered personal questions from people in the audience. “I have student debt, should I go for Hajj?” asked a sister. He replied that fuqaha have said that paying your debt is obligatory and that she should delay her Hajj until she has paid off her student loan. He added that if a person has a secured loan such as house loan then the rulings would be different.

A young professional asked about the rate of return on Amana Mutual Funds.

Another elder asked if he should leave his money in an interest free checking account. Dr Mirza encouraged him to look into Certificates of Deposits at University Islamic Financial Bank or mutual funds at companies such as Amana and Azzad, which provide a great return compared to non-Islamic funds in the market.

A significant section of Dr Mirza’s book deals with spending. He advocates spending modestly and delaying spending until one has the money to spend on something in cash. For example, if one needs a new car. He or she should plan for it in advance, calculate how much how much money needs to be saved on a monthly, quarterly, or yearly basis so one can write a check, and buy a car without debt. Same principle applies to education,

“If a child is born today—how much money you need to save today so that the student can go to college debt free?” He asked the audience. It’s $97 a month— which will give you $39,600 when the child is ready to go to university. He suggested using educational savings account to save on taxes.

“Whenever [my family] attend[s] an aqeeqah, we can write a check for a mutual fund account for the child’s education,” he shared.

Dr. Mirza is a giver and preached giving, rather than accumulating the wealth that you earn. He encouraged giving to endowments that each major Islamic center and school should have and distributing wealth in a wide circle. He and his colleagues give around the world to Islamic projects.

It is better for a man to give one dirham during his lifetime as sadaqah than giving 100 dirhams at his time of death. Why are we denying ourselves to give now, rather than giving later, he asked.

John Esposito, Professor of International Affairs and Islamic Studies at Georgetown University and author of The Future of Islam writes in his review of the book that “Dr. M. Yaqub Mirza has given us a unique work. I can think of nothing quite like it, bridging faith, economic principles, and practical wisdom. Five Pillars to Prosperity offers sound guidance from a Muslim perspective on the essentials of faith-based wealth building. Mirza includes Christian and Jewish sources in this practical guidebook, showing how the Abrahamic faith traditions share much in common while not overlooking distinctive traits among these three faith traditions."

Dr Mirza suggests that readers do a book club session with 8-9 members to discuss the book.

Mirza’s mantra is: save as much as you can, invest it as soon as you can, give while you are alive.

Running for the Hills: Dispatches from Muslim Homesteaders

“Neighbor Behavior”

Abdullah ibn 'Umar RadiAllahu 'anhu related that the Messenger of Allah Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam said: “The best friend in the sight of Allah is he who is the well-wisher of his companions, and the best neighbor is one who behaves best towards his neighbor.” (At-Tirmidhi) You might be wondering why I'm writing about neighbors when I could be writing about homesteading stuff like plucking chickens, mucking out horse stalls and plowing the fields. But you know, when you live twenty miles from the nearest shopping, five miles from the firehouse and an hour and a half from the Home Depot, neighbors become pretty indispensable. You can pick up stuff in town for one another, thereby saving you both some gas; chances are you can get to your neighbor faster than the firetruck, and possibly drag your neighbor to safety; and borrowing a neighbor's power tool is easier than renting one from the rip-off rental store. No, this doesn't mean you can mooch off your neighbors, it means you help each other out, lend a hand, a tool, or some good advice. You share information, or some bounty from your garden. You warn each other about dangerous critters, both the four-legged and two-legged kind,

Most people think of “neighbor” as the person next door, meaning down the hall in your building, in the townhouse attached to yours, or in the McMansion one lawn over. Here, a neighbor who's spittin' distance is close enough to see your house from his house. Hollerin' distance means you may not see his house, but if you holler in that general direction he'll most likely hear you and “holla back.” A neighbor who's “down the road” can actually be anywhere from four miles away, like our neighbor Suzy, or a 20-minute ride up to the top of a mountain, like R.J., or as far as across the highway and into the Black Hills, like neighbors Rich, or Mary and her husband, Jack.

Suzy's farm is a one-woman operation consisting of a hodge-podge of her handbuilt cabin, goat pens, hay barn, chicken coop, a couple of old railroad freight cars for storage, and sundry trucks, cars and earth-moving machinery in various stages of repair and/or decay. Suzy's husband works in Texas out of necessity, and so she literally holds down the farm. This 62-year old woman hauls 60-lb bales of hay, feeds and cares for close to 50 critters, tends her garden, chops firewood, maintains a pet cemetery, AND can drive anything with a motor and at least two wheels. She's rough around the edges, piercingly blunt and straightforward in speech, and is one of the most humble people we know. She gave us a turkey for zabiyha, and we've helped her load in her hay.

R.J. lives at the top of Timber Canyon and what he lacks in outbuildings, he makes up for with his menagerie of mammals, plus more than 60 squawkin', honkin', egg-layin' fowl. We did our very first zabiyha in Colorado with one of his goats. We showed him the Islamic way

to slaughter it, and he showed us how to skin and butcher it. We have fed and looked after his “zoo” when he was out of town, no easy feat when chickens are scrambling every which way when you try to gather their eggs and goats are pushing up on you for sweet corn and some attention.

Across the highway live neighbors Rich, and Mary and her husband Jack. They're hollerin' distance from each other, but almost 15 miles from us. Jack and Mary, when not traveling the southwest in their mobile home, have a modest little place with a million-dollar view, and a few dogs and cats. And they're among the most generous people we know. During our first winter in Colorado, before we got the woodstove, the temperature went down to minus 11 degrees, our camper became an ice box, and our fingers and toes were in danger of becoming ice cubes, so Jack and Mary insisted we stay in their guest house. They've enjoyed our biryani and flatbread, and Mary taught me how to make goat cheese.

Rich's place is a wonderfully creative Tetris-of-a-home built from five RV trailers covered in log siding and attached to each other at different angles so that you can't tell where one ends and the other begins. Viewed from the outside, it appears to be a small log cabin with two porches, but step inside and there are little nooks and passageways, hidden

closets and cozy rooms. He's a self-taught carpenter who's crafted his version of a Rocky Mountain man-cave. With all of us suffering from arthritis and lack of faloose, we've traded some fingersaving, money-saving tips on DIY homeimprovement projects.

With each of these neighbors we have something in common: Kind treatment and a helping hand. They've helped us and we've helped them. But not every neighbor is thinking that way. One of our neighbors who has entirely too much idle time on his hands somehow got the notion to enter our property at 11 o'clock at night, uninvited and unannounced, to, as he claimed, inquire about doing some carpentry work for us. Job seeking. At 11 o'clock at night. Really? REALLY? There were so many things wrong here on so many levels, the least of which was his going through a closed gate.

You see, there is a standard here in this part of the country, an unwritten, but universally understood protocol regarding gates which states “Leave it as you found it.” So if a gate is open, c'mon in. If it's closed, you pretend it's locked and you turn yourself around and hokey-pokey on out of there. Going through a closed gate? It. Just. Isn't. Done.

Anti-Islam Ad Sparks US Free Speech Debate

The first time Irfaan Noorudin saw the black-and-white ad equating Islam with antisemitism, he was sitting in traffic not far from the US Capitol when a bus bearing the incendiary message rolled past.

“It’s still so jarring”, he said, even though the ad, which also features a picture of the colonial-era mufti of Jerusalem, Amin Al Husseini, with Adolf Hitler, is only the latest in a string of ads placed on public transport across the country by anti-Islam groups.

The next time Mr Noorudin was confronted with the ad, he was dropping off his young daughter at her church-run daycare.

“How is that even allowed? That’s so weird”, members of the church staff and fellow parents said to him.

A few days later, the financial advisor and a group of friends were enjoying a Saturday night at a Washington cafe when a bus emblazoned with the message was stuck in traffic beside the patio where they were seated, drawing eyes and muting conversations.

Along with the Second World War-era photograph, the ads feature the slogan, “Islamic Jew-hatred: it’s in the Quran”, and says US foreign aid to Muslim countries should be cut off to “stop racism”. The group that placed the ad to run on 20 of Washington’s public buses through the middle of this month plans to place them in other cities after raising more than US$20,000 (Dh73,400) in donations from many individual supporters over the past two weeks, according to its co-founder, Pamela Geller.

The American Freedom Defence I n i t i a t i v e ( A F D I ) , M s G e l l e r ’s organization, has been identified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Centre, a non-profit organisation that tracks hate groups in the US. She was banned from entering Britain to attend a far-right rally last year.

Ms Geller is one of the country’s most prominent Islamophobes, and has sown controversy – and gained support – in North America and Europe for her high-volume activism against Islam, a religion she claims is antisemitic and whose followers are actively seeking to

impose Sharia on the US. AFDI has been involved in pushing state legislatures to pass bills that ban Islamic law, even though there is no legal recognition of Sharia in the US. Ms Geller gained notoriety for leading the successful 2010 movement against the construction of an Islamic centre in lower Manhattan.

The latest ads were placed in response to a bus-ad campaign by a pro-Palestine pressure group, American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), that coincided with the US tax deadline and called on the US to “stop aid to Israel’s occupation”. Even though the ads did not mention Jews or Judaism, the “basis of the Islamic opposition to Israel, and the reason why there has been no negotiated settlement and all attempts at one have failed, is Quran-inspired antisemitism”, and that the AMP was “stirring up Jew-hatred” because criticism of Israel is inherently antisemitic, Ms Geller told The National in an email.

In response to AFDI’s ads, the AMP said they reject Ms Geller’s “attempt to conflate our political speech with antiSemitism. AMP also rejects Geller’s response to our political speech ad with a racist and Islamophobic one”.

Many Americans, Muslim and nonMuslim, are puzzled that a public transport system is carrying AFDI’s ads,

and some feel the issue is more political than legal.

“If the KKK or other groups [placed] ads like that it wouldn’t be allowed, so why is it allowed for Muslim Americans to be targeted in that way?” Mr Noorudin said.

But just because AFDI’s ads target an entire religion does not place them outside the bounds of American freespeech laws, which only censors speech that is likely and intended to incite immediate violence.

That is an exceedingly high bar to meet, said Leslie Kendrick, a professor specialising in free speech law at the University of Virginia law school.

“This neutrality ends up creating a platform for extremely repugnant groups – like the KKK, like Geller’s group… but it also avoids government favoritism,” Ms Kendrick said. “We worry a lot when the government starts to decide who it can discriminate against and who it can’t.”

AFDI has sued city governments across the country that have refused to allow them to place their ads on public transport, and generally it has won. In 2012, a federal court judge ruled that the Washington transit system had to allow AFDI ads that called those opposed to >> debate Pg 32

“We’re not able to refuse ads on the basis of content,” a spokeswoman for the Washington metro told AFP, citing the 2012 decision.

The ads ran in both the New York and Washington subway systems. But last month a federal appeals court ruled that Ms Geller could not trademark the phrase, “Stop the Islamisation of America” because it was offensive to Muslims.

Although existing on the fringe of political discourse in the US, groups such as AFDI will continue to have outsized visibility because of campaigns such as the DC bus ads, and many Muslims fear that their ideas do have an effect on the way Islam is perceived in the country, especially outside of diverse cities.

In New York and Washington, however, the response was overwhelmingly against AFDI. After the public transit ads in 2012, riders in New York tore some of the posters down, and at least one person was arrested for spray painting over the ads.

Rabbi Rachel Gartner, of the capital’s Georgetown University, wrote in the Huffington Post in regard to the ads, “As an American, I insist on the right to free speech, even when I deplore the message. As a rabbi, I insist on the responsibility to speak out against hateful speech, particularly when it

Fasting Outside the Month of Ramadhan?

burdensome. Rather by fasting some of the days of Shaban, a strong love of fasting was developed thereby allowing the entrance into Ramadhan with full confidence, strength, and endurance.

Muslim Link Contributing Writer With the month of Ramadhan quickly approaching, many of us have started to contemplate what changes in our daily schedules will be necessary to make the most out this blessed month.

Due to enormous amount of attention given to the holy month of Ramadhan, and secondarily, the month of Rajab, considered one of the four sacred months, many of us neglect to appreciate another very important month which we are about to enter.

The month of Shaban, which follows Rajab and precedes Ramadhan, is also a very blessed month. This is based on a tradition recorded in the Sahih of Imam Muslim, whereby Aisha, the wife of the Prophet SallaAllahu Alaihi wa Salam is reported to have said, “The messenger of Allah used to fast to the point that we would say that he will not ever break his fast. Likewise, he would not fast to the point that we would think that he doesn’t want to fast. I have never seen the Messenger of Allah fast an entire month except for the month of Ramadhan, and I have not seen him fast more in any specific month, other than the month of Shaban.”

Throughout his life, he was not at one extreme, where he only fasted during the month of Ramadhan and neglected the other months, nor was he at the other extreme, where he constantly fasted. One of the great wisdoms behind this balanced middle path was to preserve the sanctity of the worship of the fast, where if one constantly fasted, fasting would become routine and this sanctity would be ruined. Likewise, if one neglected fasting during the other eleven months, the approach of the month of Ramadhan would appear as a great hardship and an almost unsurmountable task.

This tradition reminds us of at least three very important lessons:

At times the Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam, was busy and was unable to fast the three days of every month, so he would “make up” these days during Shaban. b. In order to honor the coming of Ramadhan, the Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam would fast during Shaban. c. The Prophet’s wives would make up their missed Ramadhan fasts (from the prior year) during Shaban. d. The fasting of Shaban was done as a “warm up exercise” in preparation for Ramadhan, so that he would not find the fasting of Ramadhan difficult and

f. Fasting during the month of Shaban differentiates the strong believer from the average believer. This is due to the fact that the entire Muslim community fasts during Ramadhan, so the difficulty of fasting during this blessed month is lightened because one is encouraged by those around him. Opposite to this, during Shaban, most of the Muslims are eating and drinking, so when one fasts during this month, his rank in the sight of Allah is elevated above the other believers, due to his sincerity and the worship he uniquely performs.

From these various opinions, we can begin to gain an appreciation of the numerous benefits the believer can avail, if he fasts some days during the month of Shaban. We ask that Allah Taala give us all the sincerity and strength to fast during the month of Shaban, as the Prophet Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam fasted!

Department of Planning and Zoning issued a Technical Staff Report earlier this year strongly recommending approval of Dar-us-Salaam’s campus plan, and three public hearings held in March and April where neighbors expressed their concerns about the impact Dar-usSalaam’s proposed campus plan could have on the rural character of Western Howard County. The Hearing Examiner noted all the concerns including traffic, noise, and disturbances from lights and deliberated for over a month before issuing her decision.

The decision can be appealed within the next 30 days. If an appeal is filed, the Howard County Board of Appeals will rehear the case from the beginning and render a final decision, a process which would take 6-9 months. Neighbors represented by the Residents for the Resposible Development of Woodmont (RRDW), a coalition of home owners associations in Cooksville and the surrounding areas, stated that they will appeal the decision, employing a more aggressive strategy and that "business as usual is over." Members of RRDW suspect zoning decisions are being made in Dar-us-Salaam's favor in part due to a "shady fiscal relationship" between some elected officials, developers, and lawyers; RRDW's Facebook page says these relationships will be exposed during the hearings in front of the Board of Appeals.

"We are confident in the appropriateness of our long term campus development plan. Dar-us-Salaam did not receive any special exceptions, exemptions, or zoning changes to get a favorable decision from the hearing examiner. Our community only wants the same rights afforded to other churhces and schools to build a place we can call home. We understand the neighbors' concerns regarding traffic, noise, and intensity, and we've worked with some of the top engineers and planners in the region to make sure our

plan does not negatively impact the area in anyway," said a Dar-us-Salaam board member in a statement to the Muslim Link.

Prior to the start of public hearings in March of this year, Dar-us-Salaam and RRDW negotiated for several months in an attempt to reach agreeable terms on covenants -- a private contract between the two organizations enforceable in court.

RRDW offered to support Dar-usSalaam's conditional use application rather than oppose it if Dar-us-Salaam agreed on certain limits related to the size of the buildings, the number of students and worshipers allowed on the campus at certain times, the use of outdoor lighting and amplification, and many other aspects of the campus operation. The agreement

would be in place for 45 years and RRDW would have the right to enter the property at agreed upon times to monitor compliance. In the end, Dar-us-Salaam found the covenants too restrictive and the parties moved forward with the public hearings process.

Dar-us-Salaam greeted the conditional use approval decision with an email to the area Muslim community, recognizing and praising Allah for the positive development, and asking community members to continue working hard to raise the $10 million needed to purchase the property. About $2 million has been raised in cash and pledges to date.

Settlement is set for this September.
