Community News Gaithersburg Youth Nears End Of 4K Bike Ride for Cancer By Fatimah Waseem
Muslim Link Staff Reporter As Fajr time rolls in, most Muslims pray two rakaat and tumble back into bed. But for Gaithersburg, Maryland Muslim youth Omar Bukhari, fajr time marks the beginning of something far more - an inspirational, 70 day, 4,000 mile journey across the United States as he pedals to spread awareness, foster hope, and unite communities in the fight against cancer. Great heaps of earth, snow-sprinkled mountains, and lush meadows zoom past the UMBC college sophomore and cancer awareness activist in a journey he says has been a “an arduous but rewarding experience.” His journey began on May 29, 2011 as family and friends gathered to send off the bike riders who rode on behalf of the non-profit organization “4k for Cancer.” The 42 bike riders – old and young – hit the road on a journey run exclusively on donations. Riders sleep at local churches, inns, hotels, campgrounds, and family homes and request food donations from stores, many of whom welcome the riders
with open arms. Two support vans carry their medium-sized duffel bags and riders stop every 20 miles for water breaks. These quests have been incredibly emotional, Bukhari said. After speaking to 11 stores, Omar came across a gas station. When he explained his mission, the elderly manager looked at him said, “I am a cancer survivor.” “She knew we were doing this huge ride for people like her,” he said. In Cave-In Rock, Illinois, a similar heartwarming experience occurred. A woman, whose entire family had been hit by cancer “rallied the whole town” to celebrate their many miles of pedaling, he said. Through community donations, Bukhari raised $4,546 dollars of his $4,500 goal to sponsor his ride. While freewheeling through towns, bikers witness cancer’s true face as they visit research centers and patients who have been struck by the disease. But, for Omar, the patients give far more to him than he is able to give to them: lessons of hope and resilience. In St. Mary’s hospital he was introduced to Jenny – an frail, >> CANCER Pg 14

DC Coalition Using Divestment to Fight Israeli Occupation By Fatimah Waseem
Muslim Link Staff Writer DC is home to politicians, lawmakers, shareholders, and executives who work to support and defend Israel’s 44-year old occupation of Palestine. But in DC, not everyone thinks the same way. The nation’s capital is also home to a non-profit organization fighting to end an occupation they say is entirely “unjust” and “illegal.” The organization, whose mission is clearly outlined in its name “US Campaign to End the Occupation”, is a national coalition of over 350 organizations representing vast constituencies and diverse religious backgrounds including American Muslims for Palestine, American Jews for a Just Peace, and Grassroots International. Though run by six full-time staff members on a yearly budget of between $250,000 to $400,000, it is making inroads against American-backed Israeli operations in the Palestinian West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem by urging companies who profit from the Israeli apartheid to divest or take away investments from occupied lands and by challenging harmful US policies which support the occupation. The coalition mobilized in 2002 and has since launched rigorous, national campaigns to educate the public on America’s current and potential role in the conflict. “The policies of the US – both military and diplomatic - make possible Israel’s military operations, human rights
abuses, and apartheid practices,” the organization’s National Advocacy Director, Josh Ruebner said. “Every group in our coalition understands this,” he said. Between 2009 and 2018, the United States is expected to spend over $30 billion in military aid to Israel. In fall of this year, the state of Palestine will apply to become a member nation of the United Nations (UN). However, in remarks to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), the Obama administration has made it clear that it will “stand up against” this united call for self-determination which it views as “undermining Israel’s legitimacy,” despite its 1949 promise to “not use its right of veto in the Security Council on any membership application.” The United States proposed renewing negotiations in exchange for dropping the Palestinian membership bid, an act the US Campaign says exposes the America as a “guarantor [of] Israeli military occupation” and as “Israel’s lawyer.” In response, the US Campaign launched a petition urging the State Department and the United States Mission to the UN to “not set a timetable for Palestinian freedom.” The petition has gathered 6,544 signatures of its 10,000 goal. In addition to grassroots lobbying, the US campaign is hitting Israel at its economic weak spot through Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS). The BDS movement started in 2005 when over 170 Palestinian organizations in the

Falls Church Youth Stabbed in Prison By Muslim Link Staff
support to the Taliban. The government alleged that Benkahla sought military training in the Kashmir region with the intention of fighting with the Taliban. He was acquitted in 2004 after a one day bench trial. U.S. District Court Judge Leonie Brinkema said Benkahla was subjected to “a Kafkaesque situation.” .
Northern Virginia Youth Sabri Benkahla was stabbed by another inmate at the low security federal prison where he is serving his 10-year sentence resulting from a perjury and obstruction of justice conviction. According to family members, Benkahla, 36, was able to fight off the attacker who struck while Benkahla slept. The wound, though serious, was non-life threatening. In 2003, Saudi agents seized Benkahla, a US citizen, while he was studying at the University of Medina in Saudi Arabia. Benkahla was transferred to US custody masked and shackled to face trial in Virginia on charges of providing material
Sabri Ben Kahla before his incarceration with his son in an undated file photo.
About one month after his acquittal, federal prosecutors called Benkahla back to testify in front of a grand jury on the same allegations of involvement with the Taliban. In February 2006 prosecutors alleged Benkahla lied during the grand jury testimony and charged him with obstruction of justice and perjury. Civil rights groups called it a case of double jeopardy, but a jury found Benkahla guilty; the trial judge did not allow the jury to know Benkahla had been acquitted
of the earlier material support charges. Benkahla’s sentence was inflated using the “terrorism enhancement”, and what normally would be no more than 3 years became a 10 year sentence. He lost his appeal and was sent to the severely restrictive Communications Management Unit (CMU) in Indiana where most inmates are Muslims convicted of terrorrelated crimes. The American Civil Liberties Union sued the Federal Bureau of Prisons on Benkahla’s behalf, and the government transferred him to a low security prison in North Carolina instead of going to trial. His family and young son await his release in May 2016, insha’Allah.
Campus Chaplain Inspires, Inspired By UMCP Students By Hiba Akhtar
Muslim Link Staff Writer For Tarif Shraim, chaplaincy isn’t just a volunteering gig. It’s a way of life. It all started for him back during his years as an undergraduate student at the University of Maryland, College Park. Former and present students know the story- he started attending Muslim Student Association events with hesitance, and couldn’t help himself from getting drawn in. His college career, which had once started solely as a personal crusade to achieve nothing less than a 4.0, took on another meaning as he became more involved with the organization and found a sense of fulfillment he never anticipated. It was the personal connections which struck a chord with Shraim. He enjoyed working with students one-on-one, guiding them and helping them find an inner sense of empowerment through Islam. The relationships formed from mentorship and counseling helped Shraim find his true life’s calling. “I loved working with people,” says Shraim. “And it helped me just as much
as it helped others. Young brothers and sisters inspire me. Seeing their potential and energy, watching them change and take on a patch that fulfills their potential… it’s pure inspiration.” The inspiration was enough to keep Shraim motivated and proactive in MSA affairs. During and after his year as MSA President, Shraim took on an unofficial role shadowing Ali Darwish, the organization’s previous chaplain. When Darwish retired from this position in 2005, Shraim was the natural choice step and carry on with the work Darwish had started. Now, six years after he applied for and was accepted to the role, Shraim says that the inspiration and hope which originally drew him in is one of the only things to remain constant in an organization which is ever-changing. “The chaplain is the only MSA figure who remains permanent,” said Shraim. “We become resources for students in helping them maintain tradition and maintain continuity.” One of the biggest shifts Shraim has noticed in the MSA throughout the years is a gradual increase in collective
maturity. “Years ago, there were issues with students being unable to address the nature of the relationship with the brothers and sisters in the organization. It seemed almost like a taboo topic. Today, there is more of a willingness and openness to discuss these things and deal with them hands-on.” A constant issue Shraim works on improving year-to-year is openness with people from all walks of life. “It’s something I am trying to raise more awareness about. We can’t, as an organization, close ourselves to only one kind of thinking. We have to be open to all levels of religiosity. There are times when
the issue of pre-judgment in religiousness comes to the forefront. Now we, as leadership are encouraging each other to be more cognizant of these issues.” This example illustrates the idea that many of the issues which come up for Shraim in the MSA setting mimic larger issues facing the Muslim community as a whole. As chaplain, Shraim has the unique opportunity to help students address larger issues in the smaller university setting where the social expectations which dominate the lives of many students outside of the university don’t take as >> INSPIRED Pg 14

Heat Wave Affects Attendance at Bigger and Better Annual ISB Summerfest By Farha Marfani
Muslim Link Staff Writer On the morning of Saturday, July 23, 2011, the day of the Islamic Society of Baltimore SummerFest, it started to pour rain. Organizers like Abdullah Shafi, who were setting up since Fajr, worried that they would have to cancel this annual event. Fortunately, the rain stopped hours before the festival started at noon, yet the heat wave that swept the East Coast that week was still in full swing, with temperatures that day over 100 degrees. Compared to previous years where 3,000 people have attended, this year, the festival attracted approximately 2,000, a still “impressive number given the heat wave,” mentioned Ishrath Farzana, an organizer-volunteer. Not only did the heat deter people from coming, festival-goers also stayed for less time, especially since some main attractions couldn’t operate. Although camels and a 7-month old water buffalo were present at the festival, heat restrictions did not allow them to accept riders, disappointing many people who were given refunds on tickets. Like previous years, organizers were able to take advantage of the large amount of space the ISB grounds offer. The majority of the festivities, including the barbeque
and rides were located on a hill behind ISB-owned houses and in the residential parking lot. Some attractions, like the laser tag and a bigger obstacle course were placed in the parking lot. With activities scattered and people dispersed , the festival didn’t seem very crowded. However, the parking lot was constantly full, with shuttles from a nearby office complex, transporting people to the masjid. Water mist stations and the gymnasium, featuring over 70 vendors, provided a good cooling spot for festival-goers. Most vendors sold clothes and hijabs, although Islamic books, art, toys were also sold and non-profit and advocacy organizations were present. Even with attendance relatively low, according to Shafi, the majority of vendors reported doing well in sales. There was also a health clinic offering free medical screenings. A miniature petting farm, with camels, llamas, and goats, as well as a wrecking ball ride, bigger obstacle course, and a mechanical ride were new this year. An animal show, featuring an adult leopard named Mabaka, also drew interest. A mobile aquarium was also a new attraction. Set up right by the entrance, this trailer featured a small variety of fish and turtles and offered something non-

A MESSAGE FROM IMAM MAHDI BRAY In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful Assalamu Alaikum,
Allhamdulilah, my recovery from the stroke and brain surgery I underwent during January of this year has been challenging, but through the grace and by the mercy of Allah Subhanahu wa ta’ala and the du’as and support of the community, I continue to make progress. Initially from my discharge from Inova Fairfax Hospital I was unable to walk and yet now I have successfully completed my first phase of rehabilitation at The Bridges program at Mt. Vernon Hospital.
Alhamdulilah, I’ve retired my wheelchair and stored my walker in the garage. The current assessment from my rehabilitation team is that I no longer need physical therapy rather we should now focus heavily on occupational therapy. Due to the injury of my occipital nerve during the stroke, my visual perception has diminished resulting in a blind spot in my lower left visual field. Insha’Allah as

VA Charity Preparing Ramadan Food Baskets for Needy By Contributing Writers The month of Ramadan is just like any other month for the needy. Every month they barely eat, and those with children are lucky enough to scrape by the entire year with Allah’s help. Headquartered Ashburn, Virginia and run mostly by local area Muslims, Bdesh Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization involved in poverty alleviation, health and sanitation and educational projects. of potatoes, 500 mL of oil, 200 grams of dates, 200 grams of shemai, 200 grams of sugar, and 30 grams of milk.
Bdesh Foundation’s Ramadan Food Basket journey began with the single step of helping 500 families with food baskets the first year. Bdesh Foundation decided to help 800 families the second year, 1,000 the third year, and now Bdesh Foundation is working to help 1,500 families this Ramadan, Insha’Allah.
Salim, a Bdesh Foundation volunteer, earned the privilege to deliver a food basket to one special family in Bangladesh. The three children in the family were all between the ages of four-eight. Every member was emaciated from hunger. While opening the food basket, the family thanked Salim repeatedly, and spoke of their hardships. Salim told them not to worry. He was going to make sure this family received a food basket every year. At the end of Ramadan, Salim visited the

King Reigns Over Another Radicalization Hearing, Examines American Somali Youth By Fatimah Waseem
Muslim Link Staff Writer On Wednesday, July 27, 2011, the House Committee on Homeland Security held the third in a series of hearings on domestic radicalization entitled “Al Shabaab: Recruitment and Radicalization within the Muslim American Community and the Threat to Homeland.” Chairman Peter King (R-NY) opened the 10 am hearing by citing the growing threat posed by Somali militant group AlShabaab. The Somali group, fighting with the transitional Somali government for control of the country, “has successfully recruited and radicalized more than 40 Muslim-Americans and 20 Canadians,” King said. He listed dozens of examples of indictments and arrests in Minnesota, Ohio, and Missouri, addressing doubts that “Jihadi sympathizers” exist in the community. He concluded his statement by saying adamantly he “will not back down” form holding these hearings, shooting down The New York Times “attempt to exploit the horrific tragedy in Norway to cause me to refocus these hearings away from Muslim-American radicalization.” Ranking member Bennie Thompson (D-MS) added that while the threat may seem little, the investigation must be
undertaken, especially given the “toxic and tragic” mix of problems in Somalia, what he called a “breeding ground for terrorism.” The country is plagued by unemployment, famine, and a longstanding war, factors leading peace and conflict study analysts say ‘catalyse’ the radicalization process. The floor was opened to witnesses. Ahmed Hussen, President of the Canadian Somali Congress, stated that Canada mirrors radicalization patterns in America. He said the Somalian “narrative” of unemployment, isolation, and other socio-economic problems needed to be closely examined to find a solution to the growing problem. He concluded by saying Al-Shabaab is incompatible with Islam and the hearings “empower the Muslim population.” However, W. Anders Folk, a former Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Minnesota, said the solution must be sought through law enforcement, military, and intelligence methods. He stressed the unequivocal ties between Al-Qaeda and Al-Shabaab, stating the latter presented “capable of extraordinary harm.” Thomas Joscelyn, senior fellow for Foundation of Defense of Democracies, corroborated Folk’s testimony, citing a Somali leader’s remark that Al-Qaeda
is “the mother of Holy War in Somali.” However, he believes most Somalis do not support Al-Shabbab. Chief of Police Saint Paul’s Minnesota Police Department Tom Smith testified to his organization’s successful efforts to counter the growing threat. The African Immigrant Muslim Community Outreach Program (AIMCOP) built a network of alliances with police officers and through a grant from Congress, leads after school, sports, camping, and tutoring activities which he said have been very successful – perhaps more than traditional intelligence practices. The floor was then opened to exhaustive questions and answers. Answering the
question of whether the threat is being exaggerated, witnesses testified that though only a few dozen are being recruited to Somali, “even that small number is too many.” Chief Police Smith affirmed that mosques are being cooperative in anti-radicalization measures while another confirmed that mosques are not recruiting right now, saying that the issue is in the hands of “individuals” not groups. Hussen, who stated the hearings empowered Muslims, confirmed this was the case when asked by King; however, a committee member reminded him >> KING HEARING Pg 21

Though partitioned under the Indian Independence Act of 1947 under which it was free to accede to India, the mountainous region of Kashmir has been a flashpoint between India and Pakistan for decades. The countries fought two of three wars over the land. Since 1989, a growing and often violent separatist movement against Indian rule has shaken the area, resulting in tens of thousands of deaths. The UN drawn line of control dividing Kashmir is the world’s most heavily armed border. Fai allegedly violated the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) law designed to prevent breaches of “national security,” FBI assistant Director in Charge said in a Department of Justice press release. However, treating the case as a criminal violation as opposed to an administrative one is “very suspect,” National Coalition to Protect Civil Freedoms (NCPCF) advocate, active member and attorney Ashraf Nubani said. “There is nothing to indicate national security was or is at risk,” he said. Civil liberty organizations also raised concern over the timing of the arrest, which comes at a time of deteriorating US-Pakistani relations, recently tested when Obama ordered special operations to kill Osama Bin Laden in Pakistan without its government’s approval. According to The New York Times, the FBI knew of the “spy scheme” for several years, but failed to charge Fai because the State Department or CIA felt the arrest would only aggravate the countries’ frayed relations. Recently, the Obama administration announced it is delaying $800 million in military aid to Pakistan after the country ordered out more than 100 US military advisers. Tuesday’s arrest signals more frayed relations in the future – what Nubani calls “a growing rift between the CIA and the ISI.” The FBI has called the ISI’s attempts to influence US policy “a threat to national security.”

Fairfax Aims to Prevent Working Families from Homelessness HOMELESS

more like an upscale apartment building than a typical homeless shelter. Nestled behind a new neighborhood with large single family homes, the shelter has all the resources a family might need – a cafeteria, computer room, play room, and conference rooms. Small families can fit in one room with three beds; two rooms are combined by removing a collapsible wall to accommodate larger families. There are two “pods” per floor with six rooms in a pod; each pod has its own laundry and bathroom. White noise machines lie discretely in the hallways to help families maintain privacy in their conversations and meetings with case managers.
Far from the media driven, stereotypical image of a disheveled person pushing their belongings in a shopping cart, these tax-paying homeless families have jobs and transportation but – for a variety of reasons – don’t have the stable, adequate income needed to pay for a housing. Five months ago Amatullah – her real name is not being used to protect her privacy – shared an apartment with her cousin, splitting the rent and utilities. Then the cousin moved out of state. Schiller attributes the large number of Muslim families to the diversity of Fairfax County. “This year alone we’ve served Muslim families from Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Somalia, Uzbekistan, Ethiopia, Sudan, Egypt, Eritrea, and the United States,” said Schiller. “Northern Virginia is a very diverse community, and unfortunately there is not enough affordable housing, so these Muslim families are struggling with homelessness.” When the Muslim Link asked Amatullah if she sought help from the large, well-todo Muslim community in Fairfax County, she was perplexed. “I don’t know anyone there. of the Muslim community in Northern Virginia, said there are many reasons people are homeless, but those reasons can’t be addressed while a person is worrying about where they will spend the next night. “Low income, loss of income, no income, bad credit, health conditions, immigration status, domestic violence or divorce are all obstacles that clients may face upon entering the shelter. Our program was designed to quickly assess the barriers to housing and then provide community case management where other issues can be addressed” explained Abdul Rahman, who oversees around 40 full and part-time employees at the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter. “The [approach] is ‘rapid’ re-housing because people thrive in their own housing with supportive services rather than in a shelter environment,” said Abdul Rahman, who is one of several Muslim employees working at the shelter. One former resident said the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter gave him “precious time to plan” for his family and their housing needs. “Our job is to address the barriers to housing, so if [for example] low income is the barrier to housing we would need to link the client with employment services and training,” said shelter director Jennifer Schiller. “Here we provide a safe place to live, food, case management services, but the goal really never changes – to rapidly re-house people back into the community and provide support.” The rapid re-housing effort starts right away with the “in-take interview”, where Shelter House case managers and the “client” try to pinpoint the reasons they became homeless. Beyond the obvious financial challenges to housing, there are factors that lead to income loss such as low education, lack of budgeting or job search skills. Shelter House has case management staff who work one-on-one with each client to address barriers to housing. Families are required to save their money while at the shelter as the food,
accommodations and things such as laundry are at no cost to the client. In addition, clients are provided with the essentials such as soap, toothpaste, tooth brushes, linens, and diapers, which are items that the shelter relays on as donations from the community.
“One mother wrote down that she wanted to find out more information about college for her son on her family action plan,” recalled Schiller. Once the client moved out of the shelter, the Community Case Manager was able to help the client and her son with college applications.

“Non-Profit of the Year”. Despite the resources Fairfax County puts towards ending homelessness, there is still a wait time of 3 months or more for rooms in its six shelters. Only Fairfax County residents are eligible for shelter services. “We work very closely with other shelters to make sure that people are following the right process… no one wants to see a family on the street anywhere,” said Schiller. Shelter House serves homeless families with children.
“We have a significant number of single moms with children, [and] we’ve seen an increase in the number of two-parent families as well as single fathers with children,” explained Abdul Rahman. Abdul Rahman makes it a point to raise the issue of homelessness in the Muslim community, encouraging area Muslims to get more involved in preventing and ending homelessness. “There are some Muslims who might not be aware of the number of homeless families in our community”, he said. Abdul Rahman and the rest of the staff at the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter say homelessness is a community issue, and in partnership with other non-profits, the faith community, corporations and businesses and local government, the community can address the needs the of the homeless. “There is always a family that comes through the door that you think you will never forget, but then another family comes whose needs might be even greater … we provide the emergency housing to keep families safe, but we cannot do it alone, which is why we need [the community’s] help and support,” said Abdul Rahman. As of this report, Amatullah is still at the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter, waiting to go back to work at the hotel after her pregnancy. She said she isn’t sure if her income will be the same because her work hours depend on the amount of guests at the hotel, and the slow economy means more vacancies at area hotels. Asked about the hardest aspect of being at the shelter, she thought for a few seconds. “You cannot make your own food, and Ramadan is coming.” Fortunately, Katherine K. Hanley is seeking food donations for Ramadan in order to provide for this important time. To see how you could help with this as well as the many other needs at the shelter, please visit Shelter House at www.shelterhouse.org or contact the Katherine K. The Levels of Prayer - What Level are You At? Ibnul-Qayyim Al-Jawziyyah (rahimahullaah) said: And mankind, with regard to their performance of prayer are in five levels: The First: The level of the one who is negligent and wrongs his soul: He is the one who falls short in performing wudhoo (ablution) properly, performing the prayer upon its time and within its specified limits, and in fulfilling its essential pillars. The Second: The one who guards his prayers upon their proper times and within their specified limits, fulfils their essential pillars and performs his wudhoo with care. However, his striving (in achieving the above) is wasted due whisperings in his prayer so he is taken away by thoughts and ideas. The Third: The one who guards his prayers within the specified limits, fulfils their essential pillars and strives with himself to repel the whisperings, thoughts and ideas. He is busy struggling against
his enemy (Shaytaanor Satan) so that he does not steal from the prayer. On account of this he is engaged in (both) prayer and jihaad. The Fourth: The one who stands for the prayer, completes and perfects its due rights, its essential pillars, performs it within its specified limits and his heart becomes engrossed in safeguarding its rights and specified limits, so that nothing is wasted from it. His whole concern is directed towards its establishment, its completion and its perfection, as it should be. His heart is immersed in the prayer and in enslavement to his Lord the Exalted. The Fifth: The one who stands for the prayer like the one mentioned above. However, on top of this, he has taken and placed his heart in front of his Lord Azzawajall, looking towards Him with his heart with anticipation, (his heart) filled with His love and His might, as if he sees and witnesses Allaah. The whisperings, thoughts and ideas have vanished and the coverings which are between him and his Lord are raised. What is between
this person and others with respect to the prayer, is superior and greater than what is between the heavens and the earth. This person is busy with his Lord Azzawajall, delighted with Him. The First type will be punished, the second type will be held to account, the third will have his sins and shortcomings expiated, the fourth will be rewarded and the fifth will be close to his Lord, because he will receive the portion of the one who makes his prayer the delight and pleasure
of his eye. Whoever makes his prayer, the delight and pleasure of his eye, will have the nearness to his Lord Azzawajall made the delight and pleasure of his eye in the hereafter. He will also be made a pleasure to the eye in this world since whoever makes Allaah the pleasure of his eye in this world, every other eye will become delighted and pleased with him. Ramadan and Change in Our Lives Many are those fettered with chains of sin, and those captivated by bad habits of whose damage and dangers they are completely aware. They stay imprisoned by those habits after their wills are weakened.
The real aim of fasting is to purify the soul from forbidden desires and customs. Reaching such an aim depends upon renouncing bad habits, and holding on to them is a form of slaver y.
Habits have their own power over souls and authority over hearts; they become implanted in the human being, and turn into one of his inherent natures, which he becomes unable to change.

The essential factor to get rid of a bad habit is to have a firm will, and Ramadan is a divinely educational school where the Muslim believer is trained to strengthen his will by not surpassing the limits of his Lord in everything, to resign to His
Fasting is a way to establish a resolute firm will, a way for the human being to connect with his Lord in obedience and submission, and a way to transcend beyond all bodily necessities with all their pressure and heaviness, preferring
the pleasure and good rewards that are with Allah. Thus, fasting is a golden opportunity to rid oneself of bad habits, and here is an explanation of the factors that help to do so: 1) Having a firm will. The more the will is strengthened, the more the power of the habit is weakened.
2) The length of the period of change. One observing the fast abides by the Shariah and is most careful to obey Allah through abandoning his bad habits for a 30-day period, which is enough if the intention of change is sincere. 3) The comprehensiveness of change. The fasting believer changes the time of his sleep, his waking up, his meals; the ways he spends his time; the arrangement of his priorities and interests; and even his emotions and passions, so the ability to change becomes greater.

A Child’s First Fast By Hinâ’ al-Hamrânî “You will not eat anything today until the Sun sets.” Such a declaration can be dreadfully frightful to a small child. It seems like a very, very long time. Many adult Muslims can recall the first Ramadan fast they observed when they were children. It is often a poignant memory. The difficulty of that day is easy to recall. Nevertheless, when the fast is successfully accomplished for the first time, the sense of triumph and of joy felt on that day is cherished for life.
ENCOURAGE YOUR CHILD TO FAST AND BECOME A RAMADHAN SUPER HERO
back, I was so hungry that I ate the drink mix powder. Another woman shares this memory: The days were very long. I used to climb onto the roof of the house in the late afternoon to watch the Sun go down. Some Motherly Advice A number of mothers share with us their experiences with teaching their children how to fast. One mother tells us: I would get them used to fasting by constantly reminding them of the blessings and rewards that a fasting person receives. I would teach them the wisdom behind fasting. I would also encourage them by preparing for them their favorite foods to break their fasts with. As the day progressed, I would keep them busy with beneficial tasks, and as the time for breaking the fast grew near, I would keep them preoccupied by playing with them. A final strategy was that I would instill in them a spirit of competition. The children would vie with each other as to who would fast the greatest number of days.
fasting. So she spit out the gum, looked at it for a while, then quickly put it back in her mouth and swallowed it. Then she looked at me and said: “That solves the problem.”
Another woman relates this memory: Who could forget those days? Fasting was very difficult for us. If our families found out that we were fasting, they would forbid us and force us to eat. To tell the truth, I couldn’t resist the smell of food. That was enough to make me break my fast.
Another mother has this to share: I would try to give my children strength by telling them things like: “When we were small, we would see our mother fasting, so we would fast along with her.” I would remind them of the blessings that they would receive and that our beloved prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to fast.
We used to fast and have our children fast. When we went to the mosque, we would give them cloth toys to play with. Whenever a child would cry for food, we would give that child the toys. We would do this until it was time to break the fast.
A third has this childhood memory to share: I woke up late one day in Ramadan. It was, as a matter of fact, in the afternoon. I felt extremely hungry, but I resolved to fast. Later in the afternoon, my mother sent me to the neighbors to borrow some drink mix powder from them. On the way
A third mother tells us: Every time a child was about to eat something, I would remind that child of the fast. I recall one singularly humorous incident. I saw my little girl put a piece of gum in her mouth, so I reminded her that she is
One woman recalls that day as follows: It was all a very long time ago, yet I can still remember some of the details of that day. I remember standing all puffed up with pride between my brothers. I was the only one fasting. Shortly before sunset, they brought sweets and gathered round to eat them. I just couldn’t resist. That day, I broke my fast. The next day, I steeled myself up for the challenge. On that second day I triumphed, and may Allah be praised.

4) The generality of change. Fasting in Ramadan creates a general attitude of change that encompasses the entire Islamic society. Therefore, each Muslim receives this internal and external change, and this is one of the most important
helping factors for accomplishing change. The person willing to change will not be alone, but will find similar change in all the people around him. If you don’t succeed in changing despite the existence of many supporters and plenty of time, you may never be able to change at all, and, in this case, perhaps it is not the change you are seeking. If you are unable to get rid of your worst habits in Ramadan,
The Example of Our Pious Predecessors The best example of raising children is that of our Pious Predecessors. They brought up the greatest of generations. Al-Rabî`, the daughter of Mu`awwadh tells us [Sahîh al-Bukhârîand Sahîh Muslim]:
This shows that the Pious Predecessors did not simply impose fasting on their children. They looked for ways to occupy their children’s time and make the fast easy upon them.
than it is for others. Children who have a weak constitution might not be able to fast. Likewise, children who normally need to eat frequently can find fasting difficult. Children who are extra active in their play are also among those who have trouble fasting. It is the job of the parents to determine whether their children are ready to fast. They know their children’s health. However, the parents should not be lax in the matter. As long as a child is in good health, the child can be introduced to fasting in some manner or another. Dr. Rashâd Lâshîn has the following advice for making the fast easy upon our children: Between seven and nine years of age, it is possible to gradually introduce children to the fast. At the beginning, they can be encouraged to fast until 10 AM. Then the time can be increased until the time of the Zuhr prayer, then until the time of the `Asr prayer. At this point, we can encourage them, saying: “Come on, be brave. Keep up the fast until sunset and complete it all the way.”
Is My Child Ready to Fast? Fasting is more difficult for some children you have deprived yourself of the blessing and wisdom of the Lord of the universe. He has ordained fasting on His servants so that they may change their bad personal characteristics, but some have instead changed only the time of their meals. So do not satisfy yourself with being one of this group, but be one of the wise, pious group who are keen on verifying Allah’s purpose and the objectives of

Fasting In Countries Where The Day Is Ver y Short Or Ver y Long QUESTION: In some parts of the Scandinavian countries, the day may be much longer than the night, depending on the time of year. The night may be only three hours long, when the day is twentyone hours. If it happens that Ramadaan comes in the winter, the Muslims fast for only three hours, but if it happens that Ramadaan comes in the summer, they do not fast because they are not able to, as the day is so long. Please tell us when we should have suhoor and iftaar, and on how many days of Ramadaan we should fast. Praise be to Allaah. Islam is perfect and comprehensive. Allaah says (interpretation of the meanings): “… This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion…” [al-Maa’idah 5:3] “Say [O Muhammad]: ‘What thing is the most great to witness?’ Say: ‘Allaah (the Most Great!) is Witness between me and you; this Qur’aan has been revealed to me that I may therewith warn you and whomsoever it may reach…” [al-An’aam 6:19] “And We have not sent you [O Muhammad] except as a giver of glad tidings and a warner to all mankind….” [Saba’ 34:28] Allaah has told the believers that fasting is obligatory (interpretation of the meaning): “O you who believe! Observing al-sawm (fasting) is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become the pious.” [al-Baqarah 2:183] And Allaah has explained when the fasting should begin and end (interpretation of the meaning): “… and eat and drink until the white thread (light of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night), then complete your fast till the nightfall…” [al-Baqarah 2:187] This ruling is not addressed to any particular country or type of people; it is a universal law, which also includes the people asked about in the question. Allaah is Merciful and Kind towards His
slaves and has prescribed for them ways of ease to help them to do what He has made obligatory. For example, He allows travellers and the sick not to fast during Ramadaan, to save them from hardship, as He says (interpretation of the meaning): “The month of Ramadaan in which was revealed the Qur’aan, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong). So whoever of you sights (the
crescent on the first night of) the month (of Ramadaan, i.e., is present at his home), he must observe fasting that month, and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe sawm (fasts( must be made up] from other days…” [al-Baqarah 2:185] So every responsible adult Muslim who is present when Ramadaan comes is obliged to fast, no matter whether the day is short or long. If a person is unable to complete
a day’s fast, and fears that he may die or become ill, he is permitted to eat just enough to keep his strength up and keep himself safe from harm, then he should stop eating and drinking for the rest of the day, and he has to make up the days he has missed later on, when he is able to fast. And Allaah knows best. Fataawa al-Lajnah al-Daa’imah, 10/114 [Source: islamqa.com]

A healthy ten year old child can handle the fast. Medically, his body is able to handle cope with it. We can say to a child at this age: “Come on. Show us how brave and strong you are. Do something really great and fast the whole day.” It is important for us as parents to adopt the following measures so that our children can get the maximum benefit from their attempts at fasting – and not develop instead their skills at lying and deception: 1. We must work to instill in our children’s heart the desire to fast. This means that compulsion is out of the question. Forcing them to fast is no way to develop their inner selves. Instead, it can cultivate ugly character traits like hypocrisy, lying, cowardice, and deceit. 2. Positive reinforcement works wonders and can make it much easier to get our children to fast. Praise and encouragement are strongly recommended. Prizes – both material and honorary – can be awarded to the children. 3. A great way to encourage our children is to cultivate a competitive spirit among them. This is especially effective when the children have peers who are fasting and who are praying in the mosque. 4. We must not neglect using the gradual approach with our children. This approach should be used so that the child steadily advances to the point of fasting a full day. “I am fasting, Mom” (but only when you can see me) What is a mother to do when she discovers that her child has not been observing the Ramadan fast, but has been lying? Dr. Hiba `Îsâwî, a professor of Psychology at the `Ayn Shams School of Medicine, addresses this question. She stresses that the fasting of small children is a mother’s responsibility, since the children are too young to understand the importance of the fast. Therefore, when a mother discovers that her child has been eating in secret, she should do the following:

1. Encourage the child’s fasting by giving the child an allowance for each day successfully fasted. 2. Do not confront the child because of the mistake. Do not call the child a liar. Instead, inform the child indirectly – by using stories of others – just how serious it is to break the Ramadan fast and to lie. 3. Do not expect a small child to fast a full day from the onset. Increase the duration of the child’s fast in increments, according to the child’s age and ability.

4. When the child fasts, make sure to praise the child and to give the child recognition in front of the rest of the family. 5. Encourage the child to fast by only permitting fasting people to have the privilege of sitting at the table at the time of breaking the fast. In this way, the child will understand that breaking the fast early is a big mistake. 6. Do not place sweets and displays of
food within the child’s line of vision before the time of breaking the fast. There is no need to weaken the child’s resolve with such temptations. 7. Cultivate a religious and celebratory atmosphere at home. Let the child sense the importance of this month by making it different that the other months of the year. Ramadan should be something special. Source: missionislam.com

Lessons Drawn From The Blonde Bomber By Yousef Munayyer
he has also advocated racial profiling as part of the counter-terrorism effort. Just as Breivik destroyed assumptions about terrorism while committing these heinous acts, he also shattered the myth of effective racial profiling. Breivik looks more like someone you might see hopping into a bobsled at the Winter Olympics, not the type you expect to see getting a thorough screening at the airport.
Dozens of innocents were murdered by a terrorist act in Norway. But not all the casualties were human. Other casualties included some dangerous but commonlyheld assumptions about terrorism. Guesses about Islamist involvement came pouring in over the airwaves when news of the bombing broke. These were not seriously questioned by journalists but rather willfully accepted as fact. The bombing in Oslo, the experts said, featured “all the hallmarks” of an al Qaeda attack. Norway, we were told, was on al Qaeda’s hit list both because of its NATO involvement in Afghanistan, and because a Norwegian newspaper republished a controversial Islamophobic cartoon originally published in Denmark. It turned out, of course, that the perpetrator was not an al Qaeda operative but rather a right-wing ethnic Norwegian terrorist who explicitly targeted what he termed “traitorous” European politicians that advocated less restrictive immigration policies. Breivik’s 1500+ page manifesto explains his ideology, which is heavily predicated on maintaining the purity of Europe by defending it from Muslim immigration. Yet even after news reports began to emerge from eye-witnesses who said the attacker was a tall blonde with typical Norwegian looks, the mainstream media was more inclined to believe that some Islamist group was still behind it. In fact, the New York Times and other outlets kept the claim of an Islamist connection up on their homepages for hours after it became clear that the culprit was a Norwegian right-winger. The initial claim of responsibility for the attacks was made on a so-called Jihadi website by a group that no one had ever heard of. Many in the mainstream media clung to this claim in their reporting, finding it more plausible to believe than
the possibility that a Norwegian might have been behind the attacks. The right-wing threat In reality, domestic terrorism is far more common than transnational terrorism, even in the recent period. From 19982005, for example, terror attacks have claimed the lives of 26,445 people, of which only 6,447 were a result of transnational terror (3,000 of those casualties occurred on 9/11). Has al Qaeda so convinced the West of its ubiquitous power that it is easier for observers to jump to irrational conclusions based on anonymous internet chatter? This seems to be the case. This exaggeration, this Islamist boogeyman, contributes directly to the failure to conceptualise and imagine threats like Breivik and his ilk. With the discussions on terrorism in both the public and policy realm overly saturated with analysis on Islam and Islamists, it becomes very easy to miss this right-wing terror threat. In 2009, the US Department of Homeland Security released an important report on the threat of right-wing extremism. The report would later be “withdrawn by the department after criticism from
conservatives” and, according to the author of the report, who not surprisingly no longer works at DHS, “the number of analysts assigned to non-Islamic militancy of all kinds was reduced to two from six.” After the report, the US witnessed a dramatic spike in Islamophobia and the growth of the “birther movement” and the Tea Party. The latter is identified by Breivik in his manifesto as “one of the first physical, political manifestations which indicate that there is a great storm coming.” But with the floodgates of hate now opened on innocents in Norway and storm clouds gathering in the United States, will the counter-terrorism discussion continue to ignore this serious threat? US Congressman Peter King, now chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, is continuing hearings on homegrown terrorism focused specifically on the radicalisation of Muslim Americans. The hearings completely ignore the possibility of another Timothy McVeigh, or Ted Kaczynski, or Lucas John Helder, or Jim Adkisson, or Andrew Joseph Stack, or Jared Lee Loughner - et cetera. Representative King not only focuses exclusively on Muslims in America,
There is irony, perhaps, in the fact that Breivik wasn’t only not working for al Qaeda, as many speculators thought might be the case when news of the bombing broke, but he was also virulently antiMuslim and pro-Israel. In his manifesto he states “let us fight together with Israel, with our Zionist brothers against all anti-Zionists” and speaks of “assisting Israel in deporting all Muslim Syrians (also referred to as ‘Palestinians’) from the Gaza strip, the West bank and Jerusalem” and “demolish[ing] the abomination known as the Al Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and rebuild the Temple of Salomon [sic]”. The Islamist boogeyman Breivik’s hatred of Muslims was central to his ideology, and he based much of his thinking and writing on prominent American Islamophobes. Characters like Robert Spencer, whom Breivik identifies as a leading “intellectual”, along with others like Pamela Geller and outted fake Walid Shoebat, have been at the epicenter of the Islamophobic industry in the United States. They were some of the main leaders of the anti-Park 51 movement prior to the last congressional elections. They are also supporters of the birther movement, which believes that President Obama is secretly a Muslim. Breivik quotes extensively from the writings of these fear-peddlers, and has clearly been

influenced by their arguments. While these writers and bloggers are now franticly trying to distance themselves from Breivik by claiming that they never advocated violence, they contributed to the horrors that took place in Norway by dehumanising an entire religion and its followers and advancing a fear-inspiring, cataclysmic us-versus-them mentality. Sure, Breivik may have acted alone in pulling a trigger, but the Islamophobic industry gladly drew the bullseye. The only thing worse than failing to anticipate right-wing terrorists like Breivik because of short-sighted assumptions is failing to do so again, now that we’ve witnessed what they are capable of. Western nations must take this opportunity to reflect on the attacks in Norway and ask what is being done to prevent this from happening again. First, there needs to be a serious rethinking about the Islamist boogeyman and a reevaluation of the share of security and intelligence resources dedicated exclusively to it. Second, Breivik’s attacks should put to rest the idea that complex networks or cells are necessary to pull off massive and devastating attacks. Third, Breivik’s ethnic background and the fact that he knew it would help him

“escape the scrutiny often reserved for young men of Arab descent” should put to rest any discussion about racial profiling as an effective or efficient security measure. Fourth, serious attention must be paid to the radicalisers on the right and the Islamophobes who preach a dichotomous worldview. Explicit calls to violence are clearly not necessary to inspire violence against civilians, and thus right-wing chat forums should receive every bit as much scrutiny from terror analysts as so-called jihadi web sites. The lives of the victims of the tragedy in Norway are lost forever, but we mustn’t let their blood be spilt in vain. Instead, we must adjust our assumptions and policies about terrorism and Islamophobia at this critical moment. Breivik wanted to send a “wake-up” call. Let’s make sure we’re never asleep when Islamophobia or right-wing terrorism tries to shake our societies again. -----------------------------------------------This article originally appeared in AlJazeera.net. Every Muslim has read
that the Prophet Sallallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam told his ummah about the wonderful nature of honey. In the Qur’an in Surah An-Nahl, Allah described honey as a “drink of varying color wherein is healing for men”. Its no wonder that scientists are spending more and more resources examining, testing, and developing honey-based medical treatments. As early as December 26, 2007, the Associated Press ran a story titled “Honey makes medical comeback”. One company that has believed in the restorative power of honey for a long time is HoneyDerm, Inc., a Lansing, Michigan based company that spent years bringing the healing power of honey to people suffering from hair loss, dandruff, and skin disease. Their most famous product line is Hairback Lotion and Hairtonix Shampoo, that “helps stimulate new hair growth and thicken existing hair”. Honeyderm, Inc also claims the products solve dandruff and scalp psoriasis. The Muslim Link requested access to some of Honeyderm’s customers, and Brother Mahmoud from Honeyderm gladly offered us some phone numbers. Brother Hasan, in his late 30’s is from Maryland and suffers from the common skin disease eczema. “I’ve had eczema
since high school, and it got worse as the years went on. I went to a dermatologist and he recommended a cortisone-type prescription cream. It did stop the itch, but my skin was still dry and tight. I’ve tried lotions and shampoos from Aveeno, Lubiderm, Vaseline, and others. Alhumdulillah, I found Honeyderm’s Dermatonic-P, and it is really, really a blessing for people with Eczema or other skin illnesses. I no longer wake up sweating at night! AllahuAkbar!.” We called Abdurihman Khalil from Chicago. He did not know we were going to call. Abdurihman started losing his hair when he was about 28. He discovered the Hairback product line at a convention and decided to test its claims. “The hair loss stopped completely,” said Abdurihman. “It’s excellent, and I’ve been using it now for 6 years.” We also called Brother Mustafa Al-Omary in Sterling Heights, Michigan. He decided to do something about his thinning hair at age 40 and tried the Hairback treatment. Asked how long it took for him to see results, he told us “Oh gosh, less than a month. My thin spots filled in within 3 months,.” He said he would “absolutely” recommend the product to anyone. “It’s not a fly-by-night product, its awesome,” said Mustafa. We
also called Najeebudheen Appat, a 30-year old living in Los Angeles, CA. He’s had a severe dandruff

Dermatonic-P, and it is really, really a blessing for people with Eczema or other skin illnesses. I no longer wake up sweating at night! Allahu-Akbar!.” -- Br.Hasan, Maryland problem for a long-time, and had been searching for a solution. “I tried so many different products like tonics and shampoos, I can’t even remember them all, until I found this product around 2002. My problem was solved completely, the entire thing is taken care of. I even called [Honeyderm] with the great feedback,” recalled Najeebudheen. He told us that Allah creates shifa in many things, and Honeyderm’s products are a part of that. “For dandruff problems, this is the total solution,” he told us from his mobile phone.

IRHSCA.ORG
IRHSCA BEGINS 30 DAY DRIVE Ramadhan has become the month of massive efforts in fund raising. Every masjid, muslim school, and social service seeks to benefit from the benevolent spirit that Ramadhan brings. We at IRHSCA find ourselves in the same boat. Though there are many commendable and deserving Islamic efforts and projects here in the U.S.there’s something about IRHSCA that’s outstanding. We are an outpost in the 21st century. We are taking in converts at an alarming rate. The Executive Director, Talib Abdul-Samad has reported that, “the rate of converts coming to this masjid is 15 per month!” And at the rate we’re growing now we could loose them without the proper infrastructure. These converts are mostly young African Americans between the ages of 17 and 32. Many of them are in high school, newly graduated, college students, young employees, looking for employment or seeking a career. All of them are curiously engaged in making a new life for themselves as Muslims. They see the need to transform themselves and thereby, transform their community and a future that’s not so promising. The administration at IRHSCA is working diligently to meet the needs and help fulfill the aspirations of these “young” Muslims. As of present IRHSCA’s resources are limited. Herein lies a problem. Without a proper infrastructure these “young” Muslims face not having their needs met which could lead to them seeking fulfillment in areas of life that are less constructive and conducive to a life of moral up righteousness. They stand a greater chance of veering off the straight path and back into the lives from which they came. Your charitable contribution to IRHSCA’s cause is tax deductible will make a remarkable difference in your and their lives here and hereafter. IRHSCA’s goal is to raise $600,000.00 in 30 Days or have 1000 people give $100.00 per year for five years. these funds will cover the cost of purchase of our center, Islamic learning tools, programs leading to Islamic development and humanitarian efforts and to pay the faculty and staff who are necessary to guide these “young” brothers and sisters in their Islamic duties and their personal growth. The Imam Shiekh Abdul-Rahman , Yaki , has since the establishment of IRHSCA being deferring his complete salary back to the Center to allow it time to grow and become self reliant. If possible, team up with another brother or sister whereby each of you contributes $50.00. The two of you will count as one toward the 100 donations of $100.00.
