Car Dealership Now Masjid in White Marsh

By Muslim Link Staff One doesn’t expect to hear a speech about gratitude to Allah at a car dealership.

But on Friday, June 25, 2010, about 500 Muslims in Baltimore County heard just that.

The speech on being grateful to Allah by Imam Khalil Majdalawai was the inaugural juma’ khutbah for the new Masjid An-Nur in White Marsh, Maryland.

“We’ve been having problems with our neighbors at our [old location] from early on, so in 2000 we started raising money to purchase a new place. In 2008 we bought 4.2 acres on Ebenezer Road for $775,000 in cash,” explained Dr. Yaseen Tomhe, a founding board member of Masjid An-Nur. The

A Somali-American man from Fairfax, Virginia has been stranded in Cairo, Egypt since May 4, 2010 and has been barred from returning home to America after being placed on the government’s no-fly list.

Yayha Wehelie, 26, son of Somali immigrants residing in Fairfax, Virginia, went to Yemen to study and get married.

However, upon his return trip he stopped in Egypt where officials there held him and his younger brother, 19 year-old Yusuf Wehelie.

At a press conference held at the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) headquarters in Washington DC on June 16, 2010, the younger Wehelie spoke about their ordeal. “After being directed to the U.S Embassy in Cairo, [a man claiming to be] the CIA interrogated me and kept me there over night,” said the younger Wehelie, whose name was not on the no-fly list.

Though Yusuf Wehelie was later released, his brother Yahya sat through many interrogations and was subjected to a polygraph test. Khadija Athman, CAIR National Civil Rights Manager, said at the news conference that the FBI agents “continued to interrogate Yusuf and Yahya without their lawyer.” Agents told the brothers they would be stuck in Cairo unless they cooperated, added Athman.

DC to Host 2010 MIST Nationals

By Saudah Ahmad Muslim Link Staff Writer The Muslim Interscholastic Tournament (MIST) Nationals have crept upon the Muslim youth nationwide once again, and this time it’s right here in DC. Hundreds of Muslim high-school students from as far away as Texas will converge on the nations capital, gathering at the University of Maryland at College Park to compete in subjects like Islamic knowledge, mathematics, debate, and film making to try and win the championship trophy for their region while at the same time forming lifelong bonds with peers from across the country.

Brother Adam Kareem, DC MIST Regional Director, said the final decision to hold the national competition in

DC came about in mid-May through a process of elimination. New York and DC made the short list and from then on it was a competition within itself; whoever could secure a venue first would host nationals.

Considering the growing number of New York MIST competitors, Brother Adam said it would have been nice for the New York region to host nationals. However, he said DC is one of the most convenient locations for all the regions – nine in all including Toronto – so DC is still an acceptable host. Many are expected to come down, even though nationals are generally smaller than regionals, due to the fact that only the top five winners of every competition are able to compete.

Ideally, he’s hoping they will have a team from every region. Many of the MIST competitors view nationals as a chance for a trip, so while DC MIST

competitors are stuck on their home turf, many of the other regional competitors are coming down to enjoy a weekend at the nation’s capital.

Leading the effort to organize the National MIST competition is a first for Adam Kareem, and he said this year the team of organizers is trying to have more open-sessions for the competitors so they can get to know the competitors from the different regions.

“It’s a key part of MIST, and we really want for the competitors to meet with the kids from different MSAs (Muslim Student Association) and get a chance to know one another and establish friendships with people nationwide,” he said.

DC MIST Nationals 2007 second place team Darul-Aqram from Texas is working

hard to raise money in preparation for this years MIST National. “We prepared like any other MSA did,” says their previous MSA President, Umi Abdullah. “ We held bake sales every Friday after prayer, hosted MSA banquets, and met twice a week to work on projects.” On the other hand, team Dar-Us-Salaam (DUS), DC MIST Regional winners for the last five year, aren’t doing much preparation outside of project edits for nationals considering it’s on their home turf.

“Preparation and build up for nationals is much more of a low key affair as a lot of the work is already done,” said DUS coach Sister Itrat Azad.

Damages Awarded to Woman for Ex-Husband’s Breach of Islamic Premarital Contract On June 24, 2010, after two and onehalf days of trial and two and one-half hours of deliberations, a jury sitting in the Circuit Court for Howard County, Maryland, with the Honorable Louis A. Becker, III, presiding, awarded a Columbia woman $20,000.00 in damages based upon the breach of an agreement made “according to the laws of Islam” but which the woman sought to enforce under traditional American contract law.

According to evidence offered at trial, in April 2004, the plaintiff, Hebatullah Eid, first met the defendant, Hanney Eltoumi, at the home of Eid’s parents in Columbia, and agreed to wed.

About one week later, Eltoumi and Eid – both Muslims of Egyptian heritage – entered into a traditional Islamic premarital agreement according to which Eltoumi would be required to pay Eid the sum of $20,000.00–referred to in Arabic as a “Sadaaq”–in the event that he Islamically divorced Eid by pronouncing the Arabic words “Enty taliq,” meaning, “I divorce you.”

On March 26, 2005, the parties were married at Dar-Us-Salaam Islamic Center in College Park, Maryland. Less than two years later, on January 10, 2007, Eltoumi pronounced the phrase “Enty taliq” during the course of a minor argument, adding that: “. . . and you will not get one penny of the $20,000.00 Sadaaq.” Eid then left the marital home and shortly thereafter filed for limited divorce and custody in the Circuit Court for Howard County.

Under Islamic law and tradition as followed by Eid and Eltoumi, Eltoumi had a 100 day waiting period, known in Islam as the “Iddah”–roughly equivalent to three menstrual cycles – to ask his wife to return to the marriage. Eid testified that if Eltoumi had asked her to return, she would have returned even though she had already filed a complaint for limited divorce. However, when Eltoumi did not ask his wife to return to the marriage, Eid filed a complaint for breach of contract seeking full payment of the Sadaaq.

At trial, Eltoumi argued that the Sadaaq

agreement violated public policy and was therefore void, pointing to a case decided in 2008 by the Court of Appeals of Maryland, Aleem v. Aleem. In that case, the Court of Appeals held that Maryland would not uphold a divorce and property distribution awarded under Pakistani law, where Pakistani law violated basic principles of Maryland law concerning the equitable distribution of property.

However, Judge Becker rejected Eltoumi’s argument, based upon cases in which other states have upheld agreements based upon the Islamic Sadaaq as long as neutral principles of contract law can be applied to the agreement. Judge Becker distinguished the Aleem case on the grounds that Eid, unlike the husband in Aleem v. Aleem, was not trying to use the Sadaaq agreement to bar a spouse from seeking an equitable distribution of property under Maryland law.

In addition to his legal argument, Eltoumi testified that the parties had canceled the Sadaaq agreement a week after entering into it and also that the Certificate of Marriage that Eltoumi signed during

the wedding ceremony did not have the $20,000.00 Sadaaq written on it when Eltoumi signed it, but was added later without Eltoumi’s knowledge.

The jury did not find Eltoumi’s testimony on these points convincing. Rather the jury credited the testimony of Eid and her two witnesses–her uncle, Yasser Nada, and her father, Ahmed Eid–that the agreement had not been canceled and that Eltoumi signed the Certificate with the Sadaaq written upon it. Accordingly, the jury declared that Eltoumi would have to pay the full Sadaaq as promised in April of 2004.

Eid was represented at trial by John Christopher Belcher, Attorney at Law, with offices in Oxon Hill, Maryland.

Eltoumi was represented by Raymond M. Hertz, Esquire, who has offices in Greenbelt and Columbia.

Taking In Summer at ISB Summer Fest

Like previous, the bazaar at Summer Fest was mostly geared towards clothing for Muslim women. Perfumes, toys, Islamic books and multi-media, and electronics accounted for many other offerings at the bazaar. Ar-Rahmah School also had a booth, as did major Summer Fest sponsor Islamic Relief. An estimated 3,000 people came to Summer Fest, filling the parking lot and the over flow lots and forcing the shuttle service into an early start. (All photos by Muslim Link)

An addition to this year’s Summer Fest, the bumper cars were a great attraction for the younger guests who might not know how fast gocarts and even bumper cars can go. For obvious safety reasons, these cars were of the slower variety. An area in the front parking lot was cordoned off with inflatable barriers as the bumper car arena. Ride wristbands enabled children to participate in any ride at Summer Fest.

Proceeds will go to the ISB and also the ISB Youth Group according to Summer Fest organizers.

Advertised as a major attraction, this year’s animal show had a baby tiger. Growing up to one pound per day, the baby tiger drank milk as the animal handler explained her characteristics. Also part of the show were a great owl, a bear cat, a monkey, a ground hog, and a macaw who could say some words and perform funny antics.

No, that’s not a UFO that landed in the ISB parking lot, its a mobile laser tag arena. Children suit up and go inside the dark and padded space ship and shoot each other with laser guns. The laser tag ride (above), the pony ride (below), and the rock climbing wall (below) like most other rides and attractions were manned by ISB youth volunteers.

About 100 volunteers helped out on that day, including about 30 core volunteers who set-up the night before, and stayed till close to mid-night cleaning up after the event.

May Allah reward the volunteers ! Summer Fest organizers said the event could not have happened without these volunteers. The Summer Fest team was led by Hasan Hammad and Abdullah Shafi who learned the ropes from long-time lead organizer Samer Atiya, now overseas.

MASJID >> continued from pg 1 “Allah had something else [planned] for us … all the time we were looking at the dealership [next door],” recalled Dr. Tomhe.

Only a fence separated the White Marsh Dodge dealership from the narrow, 4.2 acre lot Masjid An-Nur hoped to call home. Despite being only about 2 miles from the upscale White Marsh Mall, the dealership struggled over the last few years. Earlier this year, the owner put the dealership up for sale.

“They went bankrupt and some other people tried to buy it but they couldn’t [arrange] the financing, so we had our chance,” said board member Razwan Mughal. The masjid offered $2.75 Million including a $1 million down payment on the $3 million dealership and the owner accepted. On June 19, 2010, the community held an opening ceremony barbecue at the dealership, the new home of Masjid An-Nur. One of their first tasks: tear down the fence separating their 4.2 acre grassy lot and the dealership’s approximately 5 acre property.

With the most comprehensive zoning available in Baltimore County – business

retail – Masjid An-Nur has plenty of freedom to decide how it wants to use the space, divided over three separate buildings. The combined land size – the dealership plus the grassy lot – is over 9 acres. Zoning allows for houses and also retail shops on the property.

Currently the daily prayers and juma’ services are held in the 4,000 square foot showroom building, cleaned and renovated with new carpeting.

Eventually, said Mughal, the masjid will be moved to what is now a body shop building with about 10,000 square feet.

Since the ceiling is high, Mughal said the board hopes to put in a second floor and double the size.

The larger masjid space might be needed sooner rather than later. The first juma’ prayer saw the converted showroom full of people right back to the doors.

The largest building on the site will be made into a banquet hall, although Mughal added that final plans for how best to use the space are still a work in progress. Dr. Yaseen anticipates using the hall for large functions like Eid prayer and weddings in the near future.

Dr. Hassan Yemer, the father of defendant Aman Hassan Yemer and member of the Muslim-Ethiopian community mosque in Washington DC, First Hijrah Foundation, told the Muslim Link he hasn’t spoken to his son since he went missing. Dr. Yemer did not travel to Pakistan, opting instead to stay here and work with the defense team. guilty verdict was “totally wrong” according to Yemer, and many others in the DC Muslim-Ethiopian community agree. Yemer is hopeful the verdict will be overturned on appeal. Despite his son’s predicament, Dr. Yemer managed a smile and said the five youth “have a lot of support in Pakistan and, they’re constantly in the news.”

Dr. Yemer and other community elders believe more outreach towards the Muslim youth is needed. He declined to discuss the specifics of the case.

We don’t care enough about who they associate with and what kind of Islamic education they get,” he said.

If American Muslim communities and parents were more involved, the Muslim youth would be more open with them, he explained. “Declare it!” he passionately advised youth who want to do anything.

If only the boys consulted elders [before going] to do charity work, they would have more room for adult guidance and less room for misunderstood intentions, explained Br. Najib Mohammed.

Youth at First Hijrah Foundation felt the terrorism conviction and sentencing of the boys was unfair and that America should fight harder on behalf of its fellow citizens despite their religion.

“I think the Muslim community needs to be much more involved and active with

the government all the time, not just when issues arise. If we were already a critical part of the government, helping even with non-Muslim related issues, we wouldn’t have to fight so hard when our own issues come about,” said 17-year old Eman Faris.

Sister Azeb, a frequent comer to First Hijrah, said her heart is touched by the story of the boys whose future, she believes, is ruined. “[This case] shows that we need to be aware of what we do because it can be used against us, especially as Muslims. This [case] isn’t just their concern,” she said. “It’s the Ummah’s concern.”

Family members declined to be interviewed by the Muslim Link since the case is on-going.

Supreme Court Rules “Material Support” Law Can Stand Court Upholds Broad Interpretation Of Anti-Terrorism Law That Inhibits Work Of Humanitarian Groups NEW YORK (June 21, 2010) – The United States Supreme Court today upheld the broad application of a federal law that hinders the ability of human rights and humanitarian aid organizations to do their work by making it a crime to provide “material support” to designated “foreign terrorist organizations” (FTOs).

The ruling thwarts the efforts of human rights organizations to persuade violent actors to renounce violence or cease their human rights abuses and jeopardizes the provision of aid and disaster relief in conflict zones controlled by designated groups, said the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU filed a friend-ofthe-court brief in the case, Holder v.

Humanitarian Law Project, on behalf

of the Carter Center and several other organizations known for their work to promote peace, further human rights and alleviate human suffering around the world.

Under the law, individuals face up to 15 years in prison for providing “material support” to FTOs, even if their work is intended to promote peaceful, lawful objectives. “Material support” is defined to include any “service,” “training,” “expert advice or assistance” or “personnel.”

“We are disappointed that the Supreme Court has upheld a law that inhibits the work of human rights and conflict

resolution groups. The ‘material support law’ – which is aimed at putting an end to terrorism – actually threatens our work and the work of many other peacemaking organizations that must interact directly with groups that have engaged in violence. The vague language of the law leaves us wondering if we will be prosecuted for our work to promote peace and freedom,” said former President Jimmy Carter, founder of the Carter Center.

“Today’s decision is disappointing and inconsistent with our First Amendment position. The government should not be in the business of criminalizing speech meant to promote peace and

human rights,” said Melissa Goodman, staff attorney with the ACLU National Security Project.

Organizations that signed onto the ACLU’s brief are the Carter Center, Christian Peacemaker Teams, Grassroots International, Human Rights Watch, International Crisis Group, the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University, the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies at Notre Dame University, Operation USA and the Peace Appeal Foundation.

Muslims’ Scientific Contributions: Lost in Oblivion

By Rasheed Al Rabbi Today Islam has been manipulated as a political mutant.

Many ‘death cults’ have been brought forth to taint the reputation of the Muslims by demonstrating mass chaos and violation across the world. Islam became synonymous to terror, oppression and suicide-bombs.

This trend of violation has no reason, beyond any negotiation and more importantly doesn’t belong in religion; yet it is expanding at an alarming rate. This is a political scheme crafted carefully, manipulated masterfully and successfully over the years which results in many Muslim contributions being ignored, suppressed, forgotten and deprived of proper recognition.

When I was a little boy, I used to wonder how airplanes flew up high over the land and sea in the clear blue sky. I dreamed of being a pilot. As I grew up, I found some of the answers to those long curious questions of how airplanes work and who invented them from books. The Wright brothers made the world’s first flight 120 feet up from the ground for twelve seconds on December 17, 1903. We also remember Leonardo Da Vinci whenever we talk about airplane invention because of his hand drawn sketches of airplanes, gliders, helicopters and parachutes about five hundred years prior to the invention of the first working airplane. However, I had not heard about Armen Firman or ibn Firnas until my recent dive into Islamic culture, civilization and invention with a post 911 consciousness.

Almost eight hundred years ago Armen Firman from Qurtuba, today’s Cordoba, the largest and most technologically advanced city in Europe, undertook the world’s first parachute jump. Perhaps his reason was stupid, his suit was crude and his attempt was silly. But he was successful. Twenty three years later Ibn Firnas from the same city made all

human flight dreams true by flying for a full ten minutes above the valley of the Guadalquivir in Cordoba. The only thing he forgot was to add a tail for balance and to control his speed during landing, which cost his last breath of life. Yet few books, journals or internet sites are kind enough to give him proper recognition.

Muslim contributions have been vital to modern technology. Unfortunately, they have become a forgotten part of the history they helped to shape.

We all know NASA, the center of the worlds’ best aeronautics research and space observatory. Interestingly the first ever aeronautic observatory, named “Maragheh Observatory,” was established in 1259 by Nasir-al-Din Tusi under the patronage of Hulegu Khan. Hardly anyone knows about this Muslim center for scientific research on astronomy, mathematics and philosophy.

It is not uncommon for civilization’s contributions to be lost. What causes my heart to bleed is the further mortification of the Muslim legacy by the world’s response to Islamic extremism. I feel obligated to recover the ancient successes for future generations of dreamers. Acute pain made me sink into the oblivion, swim through the memories and rescue the golden discoveries.

Muslim astronomers left the sky immortal with their traces of hundreds of new findings. Today most of the starnames in English are of Arabic origin.

A number of technical terms such as azimuth (al-sumut), nadir (nazir), zenith (al-samt) are of Arabic etymology.

Muslim contributions to astronomy were way beyond simple etymology.

An astronomical-mathematical approach for observing key Muslim rituals, like praying five specific times every day in the direction of Mecca, allowed “Nastulus” -- Muhammad ibn ‘Abd Allāh (or Bastulus) – to build the earliest surviving astrolabe, dated AH 315 (927/8 AD). The astrolabe, an astronomical instrument used to observe planetary movements, was indispensable

for navigation, for finding the time of sunrise, for finding the direction of Mecca, or for calculating different lunar months. Even though NASA still uses an updated version of the astrolabe today, history has obscured this contribution.

All these astronomical computations eventually allowed Muslims to introduce spherical geometry, which goes beyond simple geometry. Thus the use of trigonometric functions evolved from the early connection between geometry and astronomy. Today all credit goes to Greek scholars like Hipparchus of Bithynia, Menelaus of Alexandria, or Claudius Ptolemy from the 2nd century.

However Greek trigonometry was merely a theoretical science among the Greeks. Trigonometry was actually developed to a level of modern perfection by the Muslim mathematicians over the span of several centuries. Al-Biruni established trigonometry as a distinct branch of mathematics back in the early 11th century. Muslim mathematicians discovered five out of six trigonometric functions to simplify all spherical geometric calculations: cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant and cosecant. They were also open-minded and accepted the sine function from India. Aided by these trigonometric functions, they calculated that the circumference of the earth was 7909 miles, which was only 23 miles off from the actual circumference (7932 miles), and that the distance around the Equator was about 24835 miles (24906 miles), which was 71 miles off. It was quite an achievement without any hightech, modern telescope. But, we are dissuaded to concede the truth.

I remember my early science schooling began by learning about the contributions of famous scholars like Ptolemy and Galileo. I had to memorize many toothbreaking and tongue-twisting foreign names, digest them and make all the possible references during exams.

However, Ptolemy’s planetary model of a motionless earth at the center of the solar system was wrong. Al-Biruni

discussed that the earth neither stands still nor sits at the center of the solar system; rather the earth rotates around its axis. Al-Biruni made his proposition in the early 10th century, 600 years prior to Galileo’s affirmation in 1615 that the sun does not circle the earth but the earth circles the sun. Still all credit goes to Galileo and we called him the “father of modern observational astronomy”.

Greek scholar Ptolemy was right in one area for sure: that the earth is a globe.

We all walk around the globe and some unknown force always pulls us into the center. In 1121, Abd al-Rahman al Khazini generalized the theory of the centre of gravity in his book, The Book of the Balance of Wisdom. He, with assistance of Abū Rayhān al-Bīrūnī, alRazi (Latinized as Rhazes) and Omar Khayyám, first applied his theory to three-dimensional bodies. In school, we did not learn about these intellectuals.

However we never forget Isaac Newton whenever we talk about the theory of gravity, even though he simply refined and published the original idea several centuries later in 1687.

Greek scholars are remembered as innovators of many scientific ideas, many of which are not complete.

Muslim scholars deserve recognition for their brilliant contributions too. But the cruel reality depicts a different tapestry, full of the limitations of our narrow mentalities. One such victim of such lame reservations was Al-Nazzam, who presented the theory of evolution in 845, which was was more than one thousand years before Charles Darwin officially published it in 1859. Al-Nazzam and AlJahiz also wrote a voluminous treatise on animals, their struggle for survival and adaptation to physical environment.

Strangely enough we only remember Charles Darwin’s name.

Getting the Most Out of Ramadan

We should do what we can to maximize this potential.

The month of Ramadan provides us with a blessed chance to reap blessings and rewards. That is not all. It is also an excellent opportunity for us to strengthen and purify our character. The general spirit of Ramadan encourages us to live more wholesomely and better ourselves.

Renew Your Relationship With the Qur’ân

The Prophet (peace be upon him) tells us: “When the month of Ramadan arrives, the gates of Heaven are opened, the gates of hell are locked, and the devils are chained.” [Sahîh Muslim (1079) and Sunan al-Tirmidhî (682)]

We should not only read it every day, but it is really important to reflect on what it is telling us, to ponder the lessons we can learn to improve our lives. The more we dwell upon the Qur’ân and its teachings, the better it will be for us, since Allah is speaking to us directly. The Qur’ân is a balm for our hearts, a restraint on our passions, and a cure for our doubts and misgivings.

The reduced temptation to do wrong afforded to us by fasting and by the general atmosphere of Ramadan gives us a chance to show Allah our best potential.

To get ourselves in the proper frame of mind – and earn Allah’s blessings as well – we should devote more of our time to the Qur’ân.

Therefore, we need to read the Qur’ân with sincerity and concentration.

We need to seriously meditate on its meanings. How sad it is for a person who does not benefit from his or her reading of the Qur’ân.

The importance of reading the Qur’ân during this month is made all the clearer to us by the fact that the angel Gabriel used to review the Qur’ân in full with the Prophet (peace be upon him) every Ramadan. [Sahîh al-Bukharî (4998)]

Allah says: “These are the communications of Allah which We recite to you with truth. In what speech will they possibly, believe if not in Allah and His communications?” [Sûrah alJâthiyah: 6]

Avoid Useless Behavior During this month, we should be evervigilant to avoid behavior that can nullify or reduce the rewards and benefits of fasting. We should, for one thing, shun excess. This includes excess in food and drink. It also includes gossip and unnecessary speech.

Allah also says: “Do they see nothing in the dominion of the heavens and the Earth and all that Allah has created? (Do they not see) that it may well be that their terms are nigh drawing to an end?

In what message after this will they then believe?” [Sûrah al-A`râf: 185]

We should also seek to minimize other unnecessary distractions, even when it comes to the company that we keep. This >> RAMADAN Pg 13

When you smile to your brother’s face…’

By Sheikh Salman al-Oadah www.islamtoday.net The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “When you smile to your brother’s face, it is charity.”

This is an authentic hadîth. It is related in Sunan al-Tirmidhî (1879) and alTirmidhî declared it to be good. It is also related in Sahîh Ibn Hibbân (475 & 530) and Musnad al-Bazzâr.

A man called his friend on the phone thousands of miles away. He said: “So I can be sure of your feelings, I want you to give me smile. And his friend really did smile – a genuine smile from the heart – and the effects of his smile could be heard in his voice while he spoke to his friend overseas. This made the man happy – that someone would smile upon a suggestion, though the other person could not even see him.

There is great wisdom in the Prophet’s words: “When you smile to your brother’s face is charity.”

And indeed, the Prophet (peace be upon him) followed this advice in his everyday life, so much so that `Abd Allah b. alHârith said: “I have never seen anyone more in the habit of smiling than Allah’s Messenger.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhî (3574)] Even on the day he died, while lying in his sickbed, he did not neglect to smile.

While Abû Bakr was getting the people lined up for prayer, the Prophet managed to stand up and move aside the curtain of his room. His face was like a page from a Qur’an manuscript. Yet he smiled at them, a bright laughing smile. [Sahîh alBukhârî (639) and Sahîh Muslim (636)] The prophet (peace be upon him) saw a smile as a gift of joy – an emotional gift, not a material one – a gift whose

substance is received by the heart.

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “your brother’s face” he was not implying that smiling is only prescribed upon meeting someone. This advice applies to every occasion where a smile can bring cheer, lighten the mood, or reduce the stress that people are feeling.

Jarîr b. `Abd Allah said: “Since the time I accepted Islam, the Prophet (peace be upon him) never once failed to notice me. Whenever he saw me, he would smile at me.” [Sahîh al-Bukhârî (2809 & 5625) and Sahîh Muslim (4523)] It was the Prophet’s habit to smile. He even smiled at Fadâlah b. `Umayr – and on that occasion Fadâlah had come with the intention to kill the Prophet (peace be upon him)!

For a smile to be a habitual part of your

personality, the facial muscles must be accustomed to smiling. In this way, the hesitancy that we feel when meeting someone, the uncertainty that often comes with interpersonal dealings, will not prevent us from being able to give a broad, heartfelt smile.

There are people who consider frequent smiling to show a deficiency in intelligence or social status. Then there are those who try to smile, but are so unaccustomed to doing so that with great effort they barely manage to curl their lips noticeably. Such people should practice smiling on their own if they must. Maybe they should think of a humorous incident to bring a smile to their face and then share that smile with someone else at no extra cost!

“…the things that endure, good deeds…”

By Sheikh Salman al-Oadah www.islamtoday.net Allah says: “The things that endure, good deeds, are the best in the sight of your Lord for blessings…”

This phrase is repeated verbatim in two places in the Qur’ân, in slightly different contexts.

We first find it where Allah says: “Wealth and children are allurements of the life of this world: But the things that endure, good deeds, are best in the sight of your Lord for blessings, and the best things upon which to pin one’s hopes.” [Sûrah al-Kahf: 46] We again find these words in the following verse: “And Allah increases in guidance those who seek guidance: and the things that endure, good deeds, are best in the sight of your Lord for blessings, and best in the returns that they ultimately yield.”

Be Generous Another way to develop ourselves in Ramadan is to cultivate our generosity in this month and overcome our selfish tendencies. In other words, we should increase our charity.

Both verses come in the context of engaging those unbelievers who are deluded by the provisions of their worldly lives. In the first verse, the permanent blessings of our good deeds are compared with the transient blessings of worldly prosperity, represented by “wealth and children.”

In the second verse, the context is similar, since it is immediately followed by the verse: “Have you then seen the sort of man who rejects Our signs, yet says: ‘I shall certainly be given wealth and children’?”

In both cases, the “permanent blessings” of righteous deeds are presented in the context of wealth, children and the life of the world in general. This tells us something important. It tells us that there is no opposition between worldly prosperity and spiritual prosperity.

The two forms of blessing are being compared in their degree of worth, not contrasted as opposites.

physical health. Indeed, doctor’s have begun to incorporate smiling into their therapies. Smiling contributes to lowering blood pressure and improved circulation. It boosts the immune system.

It works wherever stress and depression cause harm. Smiling relaxes us and improves our emotional stability.

More than that, a smile is a message about yourself – that your heart is pure and that you are not infected by anxieties, hangups, and gloom. A smile is an instant Ibn `Abbâs tells us that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most generous of all people, but he was no more generous than he was in Ramadan.

[Sahîh al-Bukhârî (1902) and Sahîh Muslim (2308)] Be Well-Mannered and Patient Cultivating good manners should another priority of ours. Good manners are the best companions that fasting person can have. Alas, too many people become estranged of their good manners when they are hungry. They become quick to anger and lash out at others with their otherwise un-preoccupied tongues.

The Qur’ân and Sunnah do not teach us to forsake or disparage our worldly lives in order to attain success in the Hereafter. The tow worlds are not mutually exclusive. This is why the Qur’ân teaches us the supplication: “Our Lord! Give us the good in this world and the good of the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of Hell.”

People are not divided into those who aspire for this world and those who renounce the world to focus on the Hereafter. Not at all. Rather, the distinction is between those people who pin their hopes exclusively on their worldly existence and care nothing for the Hereafter, and those who seek the good in both.

Logic and common sense tell us that achieving the good in both this world and the Hereafter is the best possible scenario. A believer, therefore, does not renounce the world, but aspires to what is wholesome and good within it. We

message to those you know as well as those you do not know. It is received and understood even before you speak to or greet someone, and makes that person more receptive to what you have to say.

A genuine smile is charity that you give to yourself. It dispels arrogance from your heart and pessimism from your outlook. It is also charity for others for the happiness and comfort that it brings them. However, the smile has to be real.

A mechanical and forced smile will not Such behavior compromises the very purpose of the fast. Fasting is supposed to inculcate patience. Indeed, fasting is sometimes referred to as “patience”.

Allah says: “Seek Allah’s help in patience and prayer.” [Sûrah al-Baqarah: 45] Some commentators on this verse interpret “patience” here to mean “fasting” so the verse is telling us to seek help in fasting and prayer.

Likewise, Ramadan is described as the “Month of Patience” – and we know that the reward for patience is none

What Allah reminds us in these verses and others is that we should not get caught up in he pursuit of worldly rewards at the expense of the Hereafter. We should work for success in both, keeping in mind that the rewards of this world are transient and those of the Hereafter are eternal.

This is emphasized by the order of words in these verses. Allah says: “the things that endure, good deeds.”

Smiling is something we want to be contagious. We want it to spread amity and friendship among the people. We want it to make people think better of one another, to trust each other, and learn to get along, whatever their other differences might be. Smiling, it can be hoped, will help to establish the value of good conduct among all human beings.

[Sûrah al-Zumar: 10] With patience, we can cope with our lives throughout the year. Without this noble quality, our lives will be frustrating and bitter. The month of Ramadan is the time to develop this most essential quality.

Letter to the Editor Alone at Veterans Hospital in D.C. Assalamu’alykum. Your article on the hospital visitation program at ADAMS (“Curing the Spirits of Hospitalized Muslims”, June 18, 2010) affected my heart greatly.

I have been in and out of the hospital so much lately at the Veterans Hospital in Washington D.C., but the only visitor besides my husband and daughter was a priest who came daily to see me faithfully each day when I was in the intensive care unit!! Where was the Imam? Where were my sisters in Islam? Sure I am nothing great in the Muslim Community, but do only the famous deserve visits? Where is our Iman? Where is our Deen?

I am worried about us as Muslims these days, including myself. Where is our good practice of Islam?

May Allah forgive us all for not giving to the Muslim what is his due. The Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam) said, “The Right of a Muslim on a Muslim are five: 1.) Returning Salaam and greetings. This is a major right. We will see the depth of these words tonight.

2.) Visiting the sick 3.) Following the funeral procession. 4.) Answering the invitation 5.) And praying for mercy to for the sneezer. And in Bukhari’s narration, the Prophet (Sallallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam) added a sixth right: 6.) And if he seeks your advice, then give him your advice.”

What about the Hadith, and I don’t quote it perfectly but “I was sick, I was hungry I was in need, where were you???” I will be going into the hospital in the near future for a left knee replacement with bone grafting and things. It will be harder than my first knee replacement. Who will visit me? Only Allah knows !!!

Pray-In Protests – Is It Worth Disturbing Salah ?

I keep hearing that the members of this [Pray-In] group [protesting barriers in the masjid between the genders] (“Breaking the Ranks or Peaceful Protest”, June 4, 2010) have tried to talk to different leaders and there is no response, therefore they went on with their approach.

I just have one question. If I want to talk to you, and you do not want to talk to me; if I have a question for you, but you do not want to answer; if I want to meet with you, but you do not want to meet with me, is it then okay for me to come into your dwelling, disturb your peace, cause fitnah, bring the media with me, and splatter the members of your dwelling all over the papers and Facebook? Because if it is, then on-ward with the protest, and I am on my way to your home with the Channel 8 news, but if it is not okay for me to treat your home this way, or your work place, or your masjid, then this needs to stop.

The protest needs to be moved out of the masajid for Allah’s sake. Hold a rally on the streets if you want, but my sisters you are trampling on very dangerous

grounds by disturbing the salah of an entire congregation or even one of your brothers or sisters. May Allah save you all from carrying the burden of each believer’s Salat that they have disturbed and brought fitnah to, ameen ya rabb, ameen. This is too much of a serious matter to be taken lightly, and may Allah save us from falling into error, and displeasing Him in any way, ameen. Those of us that disagree with this group’s actions, may Allah save us from waking up one day wanting to join them, and for those who have joined them, may Allah save you and all of us from His displeasure, Ameen.

Ask yourself this, when you are naked standing in front of your Lord on the last day waiting to receive your book of deeds, will it be the right hand oh Allah, and will we go to Jannah with the Rasullullah Sallallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam and the rest of the believers, or will it be the left hand, oh please Allah save us from it, that we will go to Jahannum and burn forever. Allah save us from it Ameen.

Will we be thinking, wait, did I pray with the sisters, or the brothers? Did I pray behind the partition or in front of it? Did I make my voice heard and make sure that the media received my side of the story, or oh my Lord of the Worlds did I pray correctly for Your pleasure, did I recite correctly for Your pleasure, did I stand correctly oh Allah, did I pray for You and You alone, which book is my intention for my Salat in my Lord. Then ask yourself my sisters and brothers: is it all worth it ?

The International Co. for Education and E-learning (ICEEL) is currently looking for qualified ESL teachers to fill positions in the following locations: 80 instructors to teach at King Saud University in Riyadh (male and female) 30 instructors to teach at a King Fahad Naval College in Jubail (male)

ALL APPLICANTS ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE NATIVE-SPEAKER COMMAND OF ENGLISH and MUST HOLD AN AMERICAN, CANADIAN OR BRITISH PASSPORT (for visa reasons) REQUIREMENTS

BENEFITS/SALARY PACKAGE

All applicants must have one of the following: B.A. or B.S. and CELTA or TESOL (at least 120 hours)* OR B.A. or B.S. and an M.S./M.A. in TESOL or Linguistics.

• 12 month contract with the potential to renew on an annual basis • TAX FREE Salary range between $3,000 to $3,500 per month tax free (dependent upon qualifications and experience) • 1 Round trip ticket or airfare per year for you and 3 other members of your family.

JOB DETAILS: EFL Trainer • Work hours: 8 hour work day 5 days a week Sat-Wed. • Teaching hours: Up to 25 hours per week (approx. 4 hours/day), plus occasional cover JOB DUTIES INCLUDE: • Preparing lessons • Grading homework, class work, and exams • Attending staff meetings and workshops • Helping to proctor other university exams • Protecting the confidentiality of information • Being open to and accepting Saudi culture and students
