Community News Al-Rahmah School Math Teacher Wins Educator Award By Muslim Link Staff “Math is not a male thing, it is not a rich thing and it is not a race thing- Look at me!” exclaimed Adrian Cox Settles, a teacher at Al Rahmah School in Baltimore and the winner of the 2014 Outstanding Teacher Award. This award is given to teachers in the math and sciences by the National Technical Association Baltimore Chapter and was presented to Settles on June 26, 2014 at the Morgan State University. Her credentials and her team of six female students, who had entered the NTA/MSU Mathletics Competition and won top positions, impressed the NTA. Adrian and her brother Johnny were raised as Christians by her grandmother, Bessie Cox.
They grew up in the Lexington Terrace housing projects of Baltimore City, Maryland in the seventies. A crime-ridden, drug laced neighborhood where kids didn’t have much hope of succeeding because of the lack of opportunities. Except that she had a talent—she was great at Math. And she had a teacher who exposed her to language and art; showed her a window outside the bleak world of the project. “Math was the only constant in my life. The thing I was good at,” explains Settles. Her mother, who has problems with addictions was in and out of Cox’s life. Her addiction causing Settles pain in itself and in the form of the bullying and harassment she suffered for 5 long years during elementary and middle school at
the hands of the neighborhood boys who attended her school “As a child, I always felt that excelling in school was my only ticket out of the housing projects. Therefore I was very adamant about going to school every day.” However, attending school every day was not an easy task as she was severely bullied. Life in the project is very intertwined; everyone knew everyone and they knew about her mother’s problems. Many students, especially girls are scared of math or don’t have confidence in their math skills. Settles believes this is because of the way they have been taught. She uses the humanist approach when teaching mathematics.

Senator Mark Warner Visits ADAMS Center Ahead of Election By Saman Quraeshi
Muslim bigotry and how that continues to be a struggle for the Muslims in the region. He added that he hoped the senator would continue to help shape the dialogue and the message and create an environment of religious freedom.
Muslim Link Contributing Writer Virginia Senator Mark Warner visited the All Dulles Area Muslim Society (ADAMS) Main Center in Sterling, VA on Friday, June 20, 2014 to give his Ramadan greetings to the congregants and attend the Jummah gathering. Warner (up for a reelection this year) admitted that he needs to come to the masjid more frequently. “I was here many years ago when I was Governor [sic] but have not been back enough times, I need to be back more often and not just during a political year,” said Warner. After his brief address to the congregants, he was part of a reception with community leaders and organizations, including board
members of ADAMS, Boy Scout troop leaders, Islamic Relief, the ADAMS Compassionate Health Care Network (ACHN), The Foundation for Appropriate and Immediate Temporary Help (FAITH) and members of the Armed Forces. The community members took the opportunity
to tell the Senator what community efforts they were a part of and they also discussed domestic and international concerns with the senator.
“The Muslim community is the greatest partner of law enforcement to prevent terrorism and so instead of marginalizing the Muslim community law enforcement needs to continue to work with the Muslim community. The Islamophobia industry is out there to marginalize the community and keep them from dialogue with law enforcement and that is counterproductive to national security,” said Jaka. Maryum Center Raises $90K, Young Organization Growing Quickly By Muslim Link Staff Over the span of almost two decades, several sisters have found a home in the sisters’ halaqah held in Ellicott City. Several of them were new to Islam, having accepted the deen but needed a place to learn it. So they met every week at the masjid led by the Imam. When the halaqas needed a new home after some disputes in the Dar al Taqwa community derailed the halaqah, the women asked Imam Abdel Hady better known as Imam Mahmoud to start in a new place. Imam Abdelhady served the community as the imam of Dar Al Taqwa in Ellicott City for 19 years. They started gathering in a space near the Islamic Leadership Academy of America in 2012. The place is now a complete and robust Islamic center with congregational prayers, a weekend school and Ramadan iftars. The sisters named the center the Maryum Center in honor of the lady of Paradise, the mother of Isa (Jesus) may Allah’s peace and blessing be on him and his mother. Safiyah Blake, an active member of the halaqah, now sits on the board of Maryum as does Patti Blades. The weekly halaqa
is a source of spiritual and intellectual growth for them. Blake says she can’t move away from the area because the sisterhood she finds every Sunday at the halaqah is irreplaceable. A fundraising gala was held on June 15, 2014 at the Oakland Hills Interfaith Center in Columbia, Maryland to celebrate the accomplishments of the last year as well raise funds for the coming year. Approximately 180 people of various ethnicities attended the fundraiser. This year the center invited a young qari from Egypt to come lead taraweeh at the center. The goal was to raise a $150,000. Approximately $90,000 were raised but
the organizers were sure that with the between the online campaign and other outreach they would meet their goal. Chairman of the Board of Trustees Abdou Maufouz address the crowd of approximately 180 people. Later in the evening he shared the status of the center with the guests. Ismail Mustafa recited the Quran, he was the first place winner of the IQRA program Memorization Competition. Second place winner, Yusuf Aliyu read the translated the verse if the Quran. Imam Adel Hady gave the opening remarks, marveling at the progress made
over the past year. Muhammad Ishaq, an Al-Huda Hifdh School graduate, is the Director of Institute of Quranic Reading and Application (IQRA) at the Maryum Center. Outdoor Taraweeh Is a Way of Da'wah for Baltimore Masjid By Hena Zuberi
Imam Abdul Razzaq formerly of Masjid ul Haqq.
Practical dawah by having outdoor taraweeh is how Masjid Baytullah aims to reach out to new community members, neighbors, as well as interested Muslims from other communities who are looking for homes near an active masjid.
Committed to creating a safe zone in the midst of the violence in Baltimore, the masjid leadership has been involved in removing blight from the surrounding area. Some of the congregation has bought and renovated homes. “We would like to revitalize the community. Muslim brothers own houses around the masjid; we would like to community to be involved in painting and cleaning up,” says Bilquis Bint Yusuf Golden-Hussein, chair of the Women's Committee at Masjid Baytullah.

Deep in Baltimore City, the Masjid Baytullah is located on 200 South Calhoun Street with a street entrance of West Pratt Street. The building is fairly large—Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation says 17,000 sq ft and is attached to a historical police station. Aside from the 5 daily prayer classes, the masjid offers weekend school for the children, as well as daily after Fajr study circles, evening classes on Mondays and Wednesdays and family nights every

She moved here from Tennessee in September and has become an integral part of the community.
The couple have made a difference in a masjid that was hard-pressed for resources last year. There have been many changes in the past year and the women’s committee is active, especially in catering to new Muslims. They offer new shahadah classes, a clothes bank that provides new and gently used abaya and hjabs for Muslimahs in need.

Islamic Learning Center to be Hub of Activity in Inner City Baltimore By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff Reporter
“We know that we need to actually teach Muslims in America and to do dawah in our communities, we have to give back to them,” says Scott. There is also an urgent need to be more open Muslims, so nonMuslims they will learn about Islam. He recalls how the Christian students used to share the chapel at Morgan State University with the Muslims students and wonders why he can’t create a place where the Muslims can share their sacred space with their neighbors.
Inner city Baltimore is needs safe places where the community can gather, learn and heal from institutional, familial and socioeconomic wounds. The youth of the city need places where they are welcome, where young men and women can use their bright minds, given opportunities instead of weapons and drugs. Allan Scott is a long time community worker at Morgan State University, John Hopkins University, Masjid Medina and Masjid Salaam. He has been living near the Waverly Business Complex for 17 years and knows the area well, as he used to run a community thrift store for years. The owner sold the building forcing Scott to shut down his business. His non-profit, the Green Housing and Development Group is embarking on a new journey. Saturday July 6th 2014. The location is a commercial area called the Waverly Business and quite a few Muslim owned businesses line the streets: Punjab Halal Meat and Grocery Store, Hip Hop Fish and Chicken moved to 32th Street says Scott, and Bismillah Halal Restaurant and Pizza Deal is in the locality. Scott is married to Sr Touria (Thuraiyya)
who has a degree in Arabic studies/Islamic Studies from the Iqra Institute in Fez, Morocco and was a teacher there for 5 years. The Learning Center will teach spoken Arabic and Islamic Studies to local Muslims. There are about 30-40 families living in nearby neighborhoods. There is also a demand for Quran Studies in this community, as the local hafiz from the community went back to Bangladesh.
“You can almost walk to the YMCA. It is a pretty nice neighborhood…well kept,” says Scott. The area is flourishing. A minute walk from the bus stop, a school is right around the corner and the supermarket is a block away. There is no community center (other than the YMCA) in this area of the city, so inspired by the YMCA, they plan on offering other activities.

VA Student Wins at National Islamic School Essay Contest By Muslim Link Staff A 3rd grader from Springfield, VA won the first prize in the UIF National Islamic School Essay Competition. Eight-year-old Anusha Khurram of the Iqra Elementary School won $500 for herself and a matching amount for her school. The topic was to write about “If you could be anything you wanted, what would you be and why?” Anusha was awarded her prize at a recognition ceremony at the Iqra Elementary School on June 7, 2014. The contest was open to all students of Islamic schools located in the USA and was hosted by United Islamic Finance (UIF). Based in Ann Arbor, MI the company is provides three lines of financing. UIF is the nation’s first Islamic banking subsidiary run entirely on Shariah
principles. According to their website they serve the needs of the Muslim community by offering Shariah-compliant savings accounts through University Bank and Mortgage Alternative (MALT™) products, as well as Shariah-compliant commercial real-estate financing and home financing through their Murabaha and Ijara programs. The bank had a huge response from their first essay competition—4000 entries in three categories: elementary, middle, high school. The winner won cash prizes and matching gifts from UIF to their schools. “We are giving back to the community that we do business with,” says Fadey Samhan, the area manager for UIF in Northern Virginia. What made this competition special, according to Samhan, was that this was the first of its kind for Islamic Schools all over the country. “UIF firmly believes that investing in
education is an important investment in our community. Keeping this in mind, our essay competition seeks to partner with Islamic schools to recognize excellence in education by encouraging students to be creative and expressive. The competition also rewards schools that
produce winning students.” UIF’s essay competition committee determined winners of the competition.

Keep Ethiopian Muslims in Your Du’as This Ramadan Dear Brothers & Sisters in Islam: As you all are aware of, Ethiopia – the land of the First Hijrah – has been going through some rough times in the last four decades. The last 3 years have been especially rough for the peace-loving Ethiopian Muslims who have been stricken with trials and tribulations in the hands of the current autocratic Ethiopian government. Over the course of this period, the minority government has subjected our Brothers and Sisters to religious oppression, arbitrary arrests, torture, incarceration and killings that are unrivaled in recent memories. The government not only unduly took away the Muslim community’s right to freely worship according to the Sunnah of Nabi ul-Allah (Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam), they also imported the unorthodox Al-Ahbashi ideology and imposed it on the Ethiopian Muslim Community thus interfering in their religious affairs in contravention to the country’s Constitution.
....
In an earnest attempt to seek redress and stop the government from interfering in their religious affairs, the Ethiopian Muslim Community gathered and elected an Arbitration Committee to negotiate with the tyrants who have been ruling the country with iron fist for the last 22 years. Unfortunately, the tyrants were not moved and convinced. As a result, about two years ago they arrested all the members of the Arbitration Committee and charged them with trumped-up charges of “treason, terrorism, and attempting to impose the Sharia law in the country.” The Arbitration Committee Members are still languishing in prison and being subjected to a vast number of forms of inhumane treatment with no relief in sight. Not only have several thousands of peaceful protesters been arrested since, many hundreds have also lost their lives as a result. Today, the scale of the oppression has widened. Muslim students have been
banned from practicing congregational prayers (Jama’ah salah) on college campuses. Several hundred Hijab wearing Sisters have been expelled from colleges and universities across the country just because they refused to comply with ‘No Hijab’ rules. Thousands of these brave students have been arrested for standing their ground and are facing miscellaneous trumped up charges in kangaroo courts across the country that serve only the twisted political agenda of the government. In addition, peaceful coexistence, the hallmark of Ethiopian Muslims and Christians for the last 14 centuries is being eroded as a result of the deliberate policies of the Ethiopian government, which unfortunately is the darling of the West despite its well-documented aversion to religious freedom and democracy. Today, the majority of the masaajid in Ethiopia are under the control of government cadres who masquerade as
true Muslims, and more are falling day by day into their hands. As a result, it is becoming very difficult to be a Muslim in Ethiopia. Nonetheless, the brave Ethiopian Muslims have continued waging their peaceful struggle that they started 3 years ago to regain their God given freedom to believe, with a relentless determination not to give up hope. However, they need your help. Every bit helps, as they say. We, their Brothers and Sisters in Diaspora, are asking you to remember them in your daily prayers. Please, make Du’a for our Brothers and Sisters in Islam in this blessed month of Ramadan so Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala may ease their burden and bring them justice and freedom once again. We thank you for all your help. -- A Message from the Ethiopian Muslim Community in the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Area

2014 Golden Minaret Awards, the Muslim version of the Oscars, A Hit! Hundreds including diplomats, doctors, and lawyers along with TV personalities and fashionitas gathered recently in Washington, DC for a Hollywood Oscars-styled awards show highlighting contributions of Muslims and nonMuslims alike to the US and mankind. On Saturday, May 31st, 2014, a who's who among the growing Muslim American community attended the Golden Minaret Awards or the #MuslimOscars as it was known on Twitter and other social media. The gala held in a swank hotel on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. recognized dozens for their work in a variety of fields from CEO of the year to top charity. The Golden Minaret Awards was first launched in 2013 coinciding with President Barak Obama’s second inauguration.

Unique from the Academy of Motion Pictures Awards, the #MuslimOscars celebrates achievements of Muslims in a variety of areas outside the arts such as law, health care, and charity as well as artistic accomplishments in fashion and other fields. Like the Oscars, the Golden Minaret Awards was filmed and organizers hope to broadcast the show to millions in the US and internationally. It's imperative that we get the message out about all the contributions Muslims make to the fabric of this nation, says Talib I. Karim, chairman of the Academy of Muslim Achievement, the group behind the Golden Minaret Awards. A Washington, DC lawyer with offices on K Street, Karim contends “All too often, the media is filled with reports of tragedy about Muslims, from Nigeria to Afghanistan to Egypt. Yet nearly invisible, are stories of how Muslims in
America and around the globe contribute to society.” Women took top honors in many of the categories for this year’s awards including Best in Law (DOJ Civil Rights Attorney Raheemah Abdulaleem), Best in Fashion (Mali Rose Designs CEO Baqiyah Adam), and Best in Media (Zarinah Shakir). While the balloting was secret, the fact that so many women were honored did not surprise Karim. “In the US, women are at the forefront of virtually every aspect of Muslim community life, thus it was fitting that so many women leaders were honored this year,” Karim noted. The highlight of the Awards Gala was a special tribute to the late South African President Nelson Mandela through a humanitarian award bearing his name being bestowed upon South African
Ambassador to the US Ebrahim Rasool. South Africa’s chief diplomat to the US electrified the audience by his acceptance speech drawing connections between the struggle for democracy in his country and the efforts of Muslims in America to showcase their positive contributions to society. Said Durrah, a Jordanian American comedian-activist, and Malika Bilal, a host of the Stream, a TV program on Al Jazeera English’s channel hosted this year’s Golden Minaret Awards. The nation’s first Muslim in Congress, Keith Ellison (D-MN), and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) served as the honorary hosts. Guests were also treated to delicious

Other speakers included Dr. Osama Abu-Irshaid, Nihad Awad, Naeem Baig, Mazen Mokhtar, Khalil Meek, Imam Delawar Hussein, Dr Lynne Muhammad and W.D. Mohammed II. The Mosque Cares and the Nation’s Mosque were well represented at the banquet. The keynote address was given by Dr Ihsan Bagby, of the University of Kentucky, who took the audience on a short sojourn through the history of American Muslims starting from the early Africans who were forcibly brought by slave traders to early immigrants to the
present. He traced the history of other umbrella organizations that had formed and pointed out the reasons of their demise, urging the council to learn from their mistakes. Imam Omar Suleiman represented the younger generation of leaders and spoke about what diversity and race relations means to his generation. He expressed great hope for the growth of the council. The latest organizations to join the council are the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California, United Muslim Relief, VA and the Islamic Center of Wheaton, IL. Membership application forms for non-profot organizations are now available on the USCMO website. The dues for voting member annual dues are $3,500 and associate member annual dues are $1,000. ADAMS Hosts Torture Awareness Event By Christina Tobias-Nahi
Muslim Link Staff Reporter On Friday evening, June 6, ADAMS Dulles center hosted an event opening Torture Awareness month, which is to remember the 27th anniversary of the United Nations’ Convention Against Torture and honor survivors of torture. Sponsored by the Qurtuba Institute and with esteemed speakers from Karamah Muslim Women Lawyers for Human Rights and NRCAT, the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, along with Ambassador Thomas Pickering, former Ambassador to the UN among other postings and current member of the Constitution Project, it was an informative panel. The title of the topic was “Exposing the Truth of US Torture: Restoring Human Dignity” and was attended by about 50 people with a handful of interfaith friends, one couple from as far away as Pennsylvania that heard about the event through their congregation. Said one lady who lived in Egypt at one point, “I have heard of ADAMS and wanted an excuse to visit
and I have an interest in the topic as my grandparents were in the Irish/British conflict.” As Imam Majid was in Sudan helping to talk to the parties in the conflict there, the event was kicked off by ADAMS Youth Director Joshua Salaam who talked about in his travels abroad how foreigners always speak of their great admiration for the US constitution but then lament that its ideals are seemingly not followed. Next Dr Azizah al-Hibri introduced the
Constitution Report and described the diverse make up of the interfaith task force members (comprised of lawyers, doctors, ethics scholars etc) who have worked relentlessly for two years to document detainee treatment (mostly from those who have now been released) in its 560-page report. With Ramadan approaching some time was given to talk about the ongoing issue of hunger strikers and force feeding that still occurs as the government contends it is their responsibility to conserve life and do not consider this cruel or inhumane. Dr al-Hibri spoke of cases though were prisoners were overfed until they were sickened or the methods of feeding were unsanitary. Most of the other abuses that had occurred were stopped by Executive order of President Obama when he took office, but could be reversed by a future President. As a country of laws, she spoke about where to do we go from here and the role every individual has to prevent injustice – from using our voices to say it is wrong to using our feet to go out and vote.
presenting the anonymous conclusion of the task force group that torture had taken place and was not only condoned but encouraged by the highest levels of government, all the way to President George W Bush. He also cited the belief of the task force that based on their research no torture leading to forced confessions produced any credible information of value for the state. They had invited any officials that believed otherwise to come forward and produce evidence and not one did. They have also called for the Department of Justice to publish its findings. Finally the majority opinion of the task force group (but the sole issue that did not have full consensus) was that Guantanamo should be closed and the prisoners approved for release should not be sent to countries that practice torture or should be overseen for any evidence of mistreatment in the future if doubt exists about the government. Some mention was made of the recent release of prisons for the exchange of US Sergeant Bergdahl and how this has

Games, entertainment, nasheeds and three wing eating contests flavored the day. A grand bazaar located in the gym was open late into the night as attendees got their Eid shopping out of the way before the month of spiritual procurement started. Established in 2007, the trust got going in 2009 and according to bylaws gave back to the school in the fifth yeara total of $5000. Overall, the fest costs $60,000 to $70,000. The costs were decreased this year as the equipment was reused from the previous year. Tarbiyah Academy, Ummah productions and Helping Hands were some of the sponsors. Sponsor packages ranged from $300-$5000. Abdullah Shafi had been trying to do a food fest for a long but was looking for a cause worthy enough to pair with. Its day and night between 1994 and 2014. Now you have a voice and your voice is heard - and moving forward we have to continue to organize, mobilize, and assert ourselves through coalitions and supporting one another and standing together.” In full disclosure, I am a big supporter of CAIR’s work and volunteer each year at their national dinner which always features prominent speakers and allies of our community. Yet in additional to working with allies, it is also necessary to confront foes – a task CAIR does not shy away from. In the news just last week was the ruling by a US federal judge that those placed on the government's so-called "no-fly list" are being denied their constitutional right to due process. CAIR has been at the forefront of this and other fights to defend the rights of Muslims to full access to school, jobs, and justice. They have also gone against big names in the corporate and media industries to protect the image of Muslims and Islam. Indeed one of their first cases in 1994 was putting pressure on 20th Century Fox around an action film that stereotyped Muslims

Just earlier this year the ABC Family Channel dropped its new proposed series ‘Alice in Arabia’ after similar concerns were brought up. CAIR worked hard to get sports wear giant Nike to settle a dispute in 1997 over the marketing of a shoe with a logo resembling the word ‘Allah’; As part of their public affairs reparations Nike constructed playgrounds at several Islamic centers nationwide. Many companies employing Muslims have also been taken to task and then educated on the right of our sisters to wear hijab and be gainfully employed starting in 1996 with cases against Quality Inn Hotels or retail chain JCPenny to the Dulles International Airport case a few years later. While this work continues even to this day, in 2005 CAIR also launched a parallel campaign called “Muslims Care’ to promote volunteerism in the communities where we live and to work to reduce fear and
prejudice. This is a role every individual can and should play a part in. As CAIR matured and grew as an organization they moved more into the political realm taking on state sanctioned prejudice and Islamophobia. This included blocking anti-shariah state constitutional amendments or exposing the Representative King congressional hearings just to name a few. It also included filing a US Supreme Court brief in 2011 supporting the requirement that warrants be obtained before GPS tracking devices can be placed on an individual’s car. From airplanes to cars, CAIR has been there to fight for our movement, free of suspicion. In order to allay mistrust it is important also to be proactive as much as reactive. On this front, CAIR has produced public service announcements (I am an American Muslim) and placed positiveimaging banners in the transportation system, and provides Qurans to not only public libraries but also opinion

leaders and policymakers all to inform and educate. They also hold events large and small. Since 1994, CAIR has conducted more than 800 seminars and workshops for leaders nationwide. More than 20,000 American Muslims have participated in a training topic such as on media, civic engagement, or legal awareness. In D.C. they will be hosting on July 15 a young professionals iftar and on July 23 an interfaith iftar. Again according to Nihad Awad, the work of CAIR has been the result of a great partnership with the community. The successes they were able to accomplish in the past two decades “are due to Allah swt's help and the community's participation and support. In fact every campaign we have conducted and every action alert we have issued were a reflection of the community's need, community's response, and especially involvement. Today American Muslims are active and engaged, yet a lot more can be done together.” National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper, involved with CAIR since their inception, echoed some of the same sentiments, "I have been honored to serve the community and the cause of justice for the last 20 years. It was only with the help of Allah and the support of the American Muslim community that CAIR has been able to be so successful in defending the constitutional rights of all Americans."

search on topics that are affecting congregations and to bring peace and tranquility in our communities, says Sh Adil Khan. “We are regrouping with a sharper focus for common goodness,” says Sh Adil Khan, President of the Ulema Council of DMV. Sh Adil Khan has previously served as the Imam of the Muslim Community Center. The complex world that we live in requires that masjid leaders be skillful in the tasks of management, finances, legal and tax issues, and, of course, the spiritual care of the people who make up their communities. Communication between scholars is essential says Sh Khan, as is networking. Some of the broader concerns of the council is to have a space where young imams can bring their issues especially in dealing with board of directors which periodically change whereas the Imam position tends to be be static. Imam salaries, benefits, contracts are all areas that need attention and advocacy. Imams are the lowest paid members of clergy in the United States, according to reports. Imams only make around $30,000 annually and rarely receive a housing stipend. According to the report "The American Mosque 2011" by University of Kentucky professor Ihsan Bagby, half of the masajid in the U.S. have no full-time staff, and only 44 percent of imams work as paid, full-time leaders. Advocacy of scholars and imams issues is a prime concern. Many young imams are taken advantage of because they do not know how to negotiate. Often imams are caught in the middle because they are accepting a paycheck from the board of the institutions, but are OPED

concerned with some of the decisions that clearly fall outside the realm of Islamic acceptability regardless of school of thought or the spectrum of opinions that are followed. They are pressured by the boards of some of the masajid that they are working with to change rulings and need training on how to handle them in positive, constructive ways—building relationships with communities instead of alienating them from the scholars. Awareness amongst Muslim of Islamic scholarship is a major goal of the organization. A collection of resources for scholars is on the agenda. Extensive research of contemporary issues with daleel (proof or reasoning) that is easily available is a goal, as this will remove turmoil from the communities. “We need a discussion o[n] leeways in an issue, and after research come upon a clear understanding and publicize it so everyone know our position,” says Sh Adil Khan. The Council hopes that board of masajid will start accepting the valuable role that the council can play as it will provide for stronger communities. The Council hopes to offer help in personnel procurement, placement assistance, and help masajid boards set a standard for their hirees. The aim is not to impose or disturb the masajid but to let people know scholarly positions and open up a forum— in turn making scholars accessible Another service that the council will offer is khateeb exchanges and training. Where two masajid can exchange scholars and imams on Fridays so the benefit is spread. . Grooming of recent graduates of Islamic Studies program on how to handle congregational and pastoral concerns will also be addressed. These young graduates are often left to their own devices. Human behavior was a course taught in traditional schools, says Khan, removed similar views). It may therefore seem much more strategic for Muslims in the public sphere to take a “politically correct” stance that may in fact be in direct conflict with the established Islamic stance. The ingenuousness of this stance is problematic in itself. Yet the actual belief that homosexuality is acceptable behavior is more detrimental to one’s status as a believer in Islam.
as people like short cuts. The council also wants to take a look at the current curriculum taught at Islamic seminaries and upgrade it for the needs of the times. As there is no study of psychology established in regional Islamic seminaries, the council would like to reinstate the ilm ul nafsiyat in the curriculum or urge graduates to seek credits in this subject from other sources. “Imams aren’t ready for counseling when they graduate. Either we need to add it to the curriculum or make them take a degree in this subject,” says Sh Khan. They plan on adding some books to the curriculum and replace others. “Where do we want to take the [institutes of knowledge]?” questions Sh Adil Khan. Self reflection, examining the status quo and planning are critical. As is passing on the experience of the the elder ulema to the young imams, especially in how to handle sensitive issues of marriage, divorce, domestic violence etc. The council is inclusive, based on the Ahlul Sunnah wal Jamah and although a majority of the current scholar-members are students of the Hanafi school, they hope that scholars from other methodologies will join. They would like to set up fatwa banks for all major schools of thought so a resource can be created as congregations are increasingly multicultural and diverse in their understanding of Islam. “We will not impose our views,” says Sh Adil Khan as he discusses that difference in opinion is a natural part of islamic scholarship and agrees that these differences need to be deliberated amongst people of knowledge with the necessary etiquette instead of laymen arguing on internet forums and in masjid hallways. The council will have 4 meeting every year, an annual retreat for scholars, ad will conduct seminars and workshops There is an obvious double-standard in place where an attack and even ridicule – not mere criticism which is to be expected – is freely cast upon anyone advocating the Islamic view and tolerated or even encouraged, while mere criticism of the advocates of homosexual or LGBT rights is considered intolerance. It is so ironic that religious people in general, and

In 2016, the UCDMV will host the annual national retreat of ulema, where scholars from the US and Canada come together to build bonds. Participation of women scholars is also on the roster. There are many women scholars in the DC Metro area and there are few ways to access female scholarship. This style of thinking and teaching is directed at educating the Whole Child. It takes away power from the teacher and gives it in the hands of the students. Many of her students are first generation immigrants and share the methods taught to them by their parents. She recalls a special teacher-students moment while teaching geometry; she presented a math problem and told them to solve it without given them any directions. As she walked around the classroom she noticed that the students used five different examples of how to solve the same problem, which resulted in the same answer. She then picked five students with five different examples to write their steps on the board. “Once the examples were on the on the board, I told all the students to examine each example to see how different each student thought about solving the same problem. I then pointed out that everyone thinks uniquely and has a different ways of solving problems. There is not one restricted way to solve any math problem,” says Settles. Diversity in thinking is what makes the math learning experience richer for all in her view. The students were amazed about how many different ways that particular one problem could be solved. Freedom in math expression and the notion that everyone has something to bring to the math experience in the learning community left each student feeling validated and appreciated. In the process she saw some strategies that she did not think about. “The teacher should be learning from the students just as well as the students are learning from the

Math is an extremely useful language and if you can master it doors of opportunity will open for you. Math is view as the elite subject, so it is used to determine who is and who is not. I just want to share my gift that Allah has given me with others, so that they can experience that math is not just limited to one particular group,” says Settles. The ability to do math can be experienced by anyone if the following two things present, stressed Settles—an experienced facilitator of mathematics and the student’s openness to experience new adventures. Settles is an experienced teacher. In high school and college she started tutoring math. An associate’s degree in General Studies from the local community college follwed and she then completed her Bachelor in Biology at Morgan State University. After teaching math at Baltimore City Community College for a year, she taught math and mentored math teachers, and lead the math departments
of various high Schools during her 10year stint in the Baltimore City Public School System. Currently, she is pursuing her masters of Science in mathematics education from MSU and teaching Middle and High School Math at the Al-Rahmah School in Woodlawn for the last 2 years. Adrian met her husband Billy while they were both teaching math across the hallway in a Baltimore elementary school. She accepted Islam several months after her marriage and now has 3 beautiful sons, Damion, Idrees, and Jibril. Her family is her greatest inspiration in the dunya is her family, her sister in Islam Najaah, close friends, and her Muslim community. “These are the people that encourage me to be the best Muslim that I can be to try to reach the highest level of Jannah as possible,” she says. After leaving Baltimore City Public Schools, Settles decided she wanted to spend more time with her family and started substituting at Al-Rahmah School. The substitute job turned into a math teaching position. Working in an Islamic environment was a breath of fresh air: to teach, communicate, and pray daily amongst a group of Muslims. She fit right in. The children at an Islamic private school did not have the challenges that many of her public school students endure, thus increasing their focus. The parents, principal, and staff are extremely supportive which makes her job a lot easier. Humble is how her colleagues describe her. She was overjoyed by how many people rejoiced with her in her award.

She says her greatest inspiration in the deen is Allah. “I learned that Allah really loves a person when he gives him/her tests involving hardship and pain. Therefore, I know that he loves me because as a child I had a very concentrated dose of hardship and pain. I love Allah so much because he has given us Prophet Muhammad as an example of how to live our lives. Allah has been an inspiration to me because he has been so merciful, forgiving, generous, just, and patient to me,” shares Knowing that she was good in math helped her to keep her head up in the midst of the many storms, and she believes it can help all students learning at their own pace in their own way. Sr Adrian’s Advice to Teachers: Always put Allah first. Without Allah’s guidance things will be difficult. Teachers should teach what excites them. This will motivate the teacher and foster a positive learning environment for all, inshallah. Teachers should let the students take the lead of the learning while the teachers become the facilitators of learning. Facilitating consists of allowing the students to experience learning through their eyes. Since the learning is directed towards the student, the lesson should be geared toward the students’ interest and centered on the students’ needs. This is one way of reaching the students intrinsically. If the students are reached intrinsically, they will become life-long learner. Teachers should build relationships with their students because learning does not take place unless the students consent to want to learn. I want teachers to remember that you are extremely important because you are shaping the future minds of our society.

Running for the Hills: Dispatches from Muslim Homesteaders
Makin' Do By Jann McClary Muslim Link Staff Writer “Use it up!...Wear it out!...Make do!... Or do without!” “Use it up!...Wear it out!...Make do!... Or do without!” Now there's a mantra every conscientious, tree-loving, cash-flow restricted, “green” Muslim can relate to. Didn't we grow up hearing our grandmothers, in whatever language, basically say the same thing? Admonishing us to be thrifty, not wasteful, and appreciative of what little we had? It made perfect sense for our grandmothers then, and it's right on target now. Besides, it's the sunnah. A big part of the homesteading lifestyle is taken up with not being wasteful. In Arabiy, the word is “israaf.” Allah says in both Surat-ul An'am and Surat-ul Araaf “Verily, Allah likes not al musrifun (those who waste by extravagance).” Homesteaders? Extravagant? That's practically impossible given that a homesteader has scrimped and saved and gone without to buy a piece of land. Patched and re-patched clothes, tires and who-knows-what-else to avoid spending non-renewable cash on a brand new anything. For many people, success is about acquiring the most, the prettiest, the newest, the best. But we already have the Best: Allah “azza wa Jal. And He sent down the best, the Noble Qur'an, in the best month, Ramadhaan. So this is not the month of extravagance. No six-course iftaars or wallet-zapping 'Eid outfits. The nafs-arama is not happening! So, use it up! Make that 3 dollar-bottle of dish soap last you three months: take an empty bottle and fill it with water.
....
A milk jug with the bottom cut off becomes a mini greenhouse to shelter a delicate plant.
Then add a few tablespoons of the soap to it. Now wash your dishes and you'll see you don't need a sinkful of suds to get your dishes clean. Do this each time until the original soap is all gone. Presto. You've saved yourself some cash. Turn those last dregs of tomato ketchup into a base for that scrumptious fajita sauce. Simmer up a serious soup with all those leftover veggies. Add some daal. Kick it up a notch. Make wudhu with your spouse from one container of water instead of blasting the faucet and making a mini ghusl. You can wear it out! Umm ulMu'mineen 'Aisha used to mend and patch, and re-patch a garment before buying a new one. There was none of this “I can't-wear-the-same-abayatwo-'Eids-in-a-row business going on. Thinking of trading in your old car for a new Hundtoyssanda, yeah? How about you keep up the basic maintenance and
drive it until it becomes a hoop-dee. Oh, it's a hoop-dee, now? Umm, okay. Out here, when your truck or tractor no longer runs, and repairing it takes a back seat to basics, like, eating, folks just park it off to the side of the barn and call it yard art. (Let me know how that works out with your home owners'
association.) So your khimar is just so ravaged with pinholes and snags that you're ready to give it a janaazah? Cut it into squares and sew little sachets filled with fragrant herbs and hang them in your closet. Or cut it to fit a frame to become a background for a treasured photograph. Get creative. Think outside the shopping bag.
A broken-off shovel gets resurrected for a new life scraping mud off your boots.
Take what you have and make do! Take broken tools and gadgets and repurpose them into practical new uses. They may look weird, but hey, it keeps money in your pocket. A milk jug with the bottom cut off becomes a mini greenhouse to shelter a delicate plant. An old tent stake and a piece of cedar branch morph into a woodstove poker. A broken-off shovel gets resurrected for a new life scraping mud off your boots. While these reincarnations won't win you an innovation-of-the-year award, they show an ability to utilize Allah's blessings in as many beneficial ways as possible, and with that you begin the ¨manifestation of gratefulness.

Stop Saying “Moderate Muslims.” You're Only Empowering Islamophobes By Nathan Lean
The New Republic, June 25, 2014 Last week’s Heritage Foundation panel on the 2012 attacks in Benghazi was bound to be an ugly affair, what with the presence of panelist Brigitte Gabriel, a self-described “terrorism analyst” with a laundry list of offensive statements about Islam and Arabs. Sure enough, when attendee Saba Ahmed, an American University law school student, explained that not all Muslims are terrorists, Gabriel retorted that “the peaceful majority were irrelevant” in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the way that peaceful Germans were irrelevant during the Holocaust. That prompted much hand-wringing, primarily on cable news, about the supposed silence of “moderate Muslims” in this supposed age of Islamist extremism. What no one on either side of the debate questioned, though, was the legitimacy of the phrase "moderate Muslims" itself. In the years that I’ve spent writing about and studying the phenomenon of Islamophobia, that phrase has always troubled me. Muslims and non-Muslims alike bandy it about, though the latter usually demand that the former prove that they are such. What bothers me is not that there aren’t “moderate Muslims”—from my perspective, there certainly are. The unacknowledged problem is how that phrase informs our judgments. Brigitte Gabriel, for instance, told the Australian Jewish News in 2008, “Every practicing Muslim is a radical Muslim,” meaning “moderates” must be only those who don’t practice their religion. Celebrity atheist Sam Harris writes that “moderate Muslims” are those who express skepticism over the divine origins of the Quran and “surely realize that all [sacred] books are now candidates for flushing down the toilet.” Then there’s conservative columnist John Hawkins, who enumerates seven criteria that Muslims must meet in order to be
....
considered “moderate” while the queen of Muslim-bashing, Pamela Geller, asks in typical fashion, “What’s the difference? Today’s moderate is tomorrow’s mass murderer.” To be fair, it’s not just the wackos. Newsweek, NPR, the Wall Street Journal, Reuters, TIME, The New Republicand many others have used this phrase to describe Muslims who fit a certain preferred profile. Many Muslims themselves have bought into this dichotomy, if only
Christians or Jews, but rather reckon that the Westboro Baptists, Jewish Defense League, and others are aberrations. And sure, Muslims give us plenty of bad examples, but it’s our own fault if we allow those examples to constipate our ability to perform basic logic. During the panel, Gabriel argued that “15-25 percent” of the world’s Muslims are extremists, and that the remaining “moderates” are “irrelevant” (I shouldn’t have to explain that it’s usually the
That’s the problem with this “moderate Muslim” nonsense: it empowers anti-Muslim activists by implying that the degree to which a Muslim digests their religious faith is indicative of their status as a potential terrorist.
to distance themselves from the socalled radicals and extremists—to assure paranoid non-Muslims, in other words, "I'm not that kind of Muslim." How is it that we talk about Muslims much like we talk about Buffalo wings, their “potency” being measured not by some objective rubric but rather by our personal preferences?. It’s the mild ones that we seem to search out: not so spicy in their religious practices that they burn us, yet not so bland that they dilute our religious diversity altogether. The idea of a “moderate Islam” or “moderate Muslim” is intellectually lazy because it carves the world up into two camps: the “good” Muslims and the “bad” Muslims, as Columbia University professor Mahmood Mamdani has noted. (Saba Ahmed herself used the word "bad" in her remarks at the Heritage panel.) Until proven good, or in this case “moderate,” all Muslims are perceived as “bad,” or potentially extreme. We certainly don’t spend our time searching out “moderate”
majority of a given group that makes the minority irrelevant, not vice versa). Based on the lower end of that range, that’s 240 million of the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims — the equivalent of every single Muslim in Sub-Saharan Africa, or nearly six times the number of all Muslims on the entire continent of Europe. Where are the examples of such supposedly widespread extremism? Even if a mere 1 percent of the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims is committed to violence, why is it that we haven’t seen 16 million violent attacks? Proving one’s “moderation” is a trap, anyway. The only way to do it is to meet the criteria set forth by the person making the demand. For Gabriel and others, it’s by supporting Western foreign policies in the Middle East, cheering continued military aid to Israel, and even rejecting certain Islamic tenets. It’s why a figure like Zuhdi Jasser, a darling of the Republican Party and Peter King’s star witness in the “radicalization” hearings, is held up like a trophy while Saba Ahmed is mocked.
That’s the problem with this “moderate Muslim” nonsense: it empowers antiMuslim activists by implying that the degree to which a Muslim digests their religious faith is indicative of their status as a potential terrorist. Thus, “moderately” subscribing to the teachings of the Quran is OK, but should they cross over into the world of daily prayers, Friday afternoons at the mosque, and, God forbid, Ramadan, they’re suddenly flirting with extremism. That way of thinking is predicated on the unfounded notion that pious religious orthodoxy necessarily entails Muslims behaving badly. It also implies that religious “moderation” involves swallowing up one particular political narrative. Lastly, calling on “moderate Muslims” to condemn violence or other loathsome acts presumes that anyone who doesn’t is a terrorist lying in wait. It gives credence to the idea that only those who are at the beck and call of Islam’s credential police are the peaceful ones, and that the ones posing the question—“where are the moderate Muslims”—are sufficient arbiters of what Islam really is and isn’t. In order to arrive at a more peaceful and equitable place in our society, we must divorce ourselves from the notion that we are authorities on the faith traditions of others and as such are entitled to prescribe how they must interpret them in order to be welcomed. The diversity within religious traditions is just as important to the pluralistic fabric of America as the diversity of religious traditions. Carving up our Muslim compatriots into categories that fit our idea of what they should be isn’t going to get us there. Nathan Lean is the Research Director at Georgetown University’s Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. He is the author of three books, including The Islamophobia Industry: How the Right Manufactures Fear of Muslims. His next book, The Changing Middle East, will be released this year.

Charges Dropped Against Sami Al-Arian An Interview with his former lawyer Linda Moreno By Seán Kinane
Arian] got 57 months as a sentence and also a deportation order. This occurred in May of 2006.
WMNF Drive-Time News, July 3, 2014
Last Friday a federal judge in Virginia dropped all charges against former University of South Florida Professor Sami Al-Arian; could it signal the end of a marathon legal battle that began in Tampa more than a decade ago? To find out, WMNF spoke Wednesday with Al-Arian’s former attorney, Linda Moreno, who is based in Tampa. Linda Moreno is also affiliated with Doughty Street Chambers in London, a firm specializing in human rights and international law. "Well, I’m very happy that at long-last, after 11 years of a struggle; a 6-month jury trial; years of litigation; decades of pervasive, inflammatory, negative press and accusations against Dr. Al-Arian, that the government has done the right thing and moved to dismiss the case and a judge granted the order. So there’s joy, there’s jubilation — but there’s also concern about next steps." Before we see what the next steps are, let’s go back to 11 years ago. Remind our listeners, then about what happened 11 years ago about the trial that happened in Tampa. "Well, in 2003 Dr. Al-Arian was arrested and charged in a 53-count indictment that alleged wide-ranging international conspiracies: conspiracy to murder nationals abroad and of course material support of terrorism. This was as a result, as I mentioned, of decades of pervasive negative press and allegations about him. The case really was the seminal test of the PATRIOT Act, because the indictment came down less than two years after 9/11 and it was one of the first cases that went to trial, actually. "The allegations were that Dr. Al-Arian supported the terrorist organization of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. And our position was that Dr. Al-Arian was engaged in the noblest traditions of speech
At the end of the day what Dr. Al-Arian was doing: he was a powerful and effective advocate for the Palestinians. And that was and remains a very unpopular view. Our defense at the trial, where we called no witnesses, was that Dr. Al-Arian was exercising his rights under the First Amendment. in this country. Political speech. Speech that powerful people found offensive. And those powerful people had a very specific point of view which was the pro-Zionist, anti-Palestinian point of view. There were many forces brought to bear on Dr. AlArian’s case – political forces. "After two years of litigation, we went to trial. It was a six-month jury trial. The government presented dozens and dozens of witnesses, flew people over from Israel to testify against Dr. Al-Arian. And the jury was out, I believe, a couple of weeks. They could not, would not, convict Dr. Al-Arian of a single count. They acquitted him of eight charges and they hung – 10 for acquittal, two for conviction – on the remaining nine charges. What that meant was that the government – and they so told us in no uncertain terms – that they could retry Dr. Al-Arian on those remaining nine charges.
"I think that the emotional, psychological and spiritual burden of going through another process like this was too much to bear for the family and for Dr. Al-Arian. At the end of the day, we – Bill Moffitt, my brilliant colleague, who is now deceased, and I – negotiated a plea for Dr. Al-Arian to one charge where he admitted providing services to a relative who was associated with Islamic Jihad. "In the negotiation process, which took five months, between the defense and the government, to specify exactly what words were going to be used in the plea and also what all the understandings were between both parties, it was abundantly clear: although the government wanted Dr. Al-Arian to cooperate that he would never do that. That could never be a part of a plea and he was ready to go to trial again. At the end of the day we negotiated this plea, which meant it ended all business with the federal government. Sami [Al-
"Within several weeks Sami was hit with a grand jury subpoena in a different part of the country, the Eastern District of Virginia. This of course was pretty astonishing, given we had just negotiated the terms of the agreement. And Dr. AlArian fought that subpoena; he refused to testify, he protested, he went on hunger strikes. The government immunized him to try to force him to testify in an investigation they were conducting in Virginia. At the end of the day he refused to do it saying it was a violation of the plea agreement and the government there indicted him on criminal contempt charges. "As a result of that case, he has been in limbo, really since 2006. Obviously he needed counsel on that criminal case. It was very hard for me to let that case go. I had to because I was potentially a witness in the inevitable trial that would occur. I’m very grateful – as I know the family is – to Professor [Jonathan] Turley, who took on the representation through the contempt proceeding. Many motions were filed. At the end of the day, Professor Turley filed a motion to dismiss the indictment which sat on Judge Leonie Brinkema’s desk for five long years. "What happened a few days ago was that the government moved – finally, at long last – to dismiss that criminal contempt indictment. To finally allow Sami not to be wearing an ankle monitor any more or confined to his home or at any moment brought to prison. So there are no charges pending against him at all. However it does open him up to deportation, which is as a result and consequence of the plea agreement back in 2006." And you were referring earlier to Professor Turley and that is Jonathan Turley, from Georgetown University, who is now Dr. Al-Arian’s current attorney.

China Bans Ramadan Fasting In Muslim Northwest Aimed at students and civil servants, the order echoes past prohibitions but comes amid tight security after unrest (AP - July 3, 2014) Students and civil servants in China's Muslim northwest, where Beijing is enforcing a security crackdown following deadly unrest, have been ordered to skip the traditional fasting of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Statements posted in the past several days on websites of schools, government agencies and local party organizations in the Xinjiang region said the ban was aimed at protecting students' well-being and preventing the use of schools and government offices to promote religion. Statements on the websites of local party organizations said members of the officially atheist ruling party should also avoid fasting. Bans have been imposed in the past on fasting for Ramadan, which began at sundown Saturday. But this year is unusually sensitive because Xinjiang is under tight security following an escalation of violence that the government blames on Muslim extremists with foreign ties who it says want independence. Members of the region's Uighur ethnic group complain that discrimination and restrictions on religion, such as a ban on taking children to mosques, are fueling anger at the ethnic Han Chinese majority. An attack on May 22 in the regional capital, Urumqi, by four people who threw bombs in a vegetable market killed 43 people, including the attackers. On June 22, police in Kashgar in the far west said they killed 13 assailants who drove into a police building and set off explosives, injuring three officers. Authorities have blamed two other attacks at train stations in Urumqi and in China's southwest on Muslim extremists.

The government responded with a crackdown that resulted in more than 380 arrests in one month and public rallies to announce sentences. The ruling party is wary of religious activities it worries might serve as a rallying point for opposition to one-party rule. Politically Incorrect Abu Abdillah Bismillah, Alhamdulillah, wa salaat wa salaam alaa Rasoolillah This is in response to the news article published in the Muslim Link's June 6, 2014 issue, “First Openly Gay Member of VA Assembly is 'Great Friend' of NOVA Muslims.” There now seems to be a general consensus that homosexual behavior is normal and acceptable and conversely, totally wrong to believe otherwise or to publically express as much. To make any statement contrary to full acceptance of homosexuality or to express any disdain for it is now officially "politically incorrect" and even viewed as a litmus test of one’s acceptance of diversity and embracement of the principle of universal civil rights. With the US Supreme Court paving the way, statewide court rulings are trending in favor of gay marriages so much so that its legalization nationally no longer seems a matter of if, but when. It is ironic, that no states (except perhaps in Utah) recognize the legitimacy of polygyny - the marriage of one man to multiple wives - a practice that goes back millennia in several cultures. Thus, an American Muslim who may be lawfully married to more than one wife abroad where Islamic law is recognized cannot have his wives recognized in his homeland as a lawful "spouse". This effectively denies his family legal rights and privileges now enjoyed by homosexuals. To put it succinctly, the turnaround of American’s views regarding homosexuality so dramatically within a short period seems nearly complete. One could not imagine the US President congratulating the first black, openly homosexual, professional basketball player and the first black, openly gay professional football draft pick just a few elections ago. In authenticated statements of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam we are informed of the signs of the approach of the Last Day such as illegal sexual intercourse becoming widespread and the number of men decreasing while the number of women increases, as well as the spread of diseases when people engage in acts of lewdness. It has also been foretold that the Muslims would follow those who preceded them in no uncertain and graphic terms. A Forgotten Gold Mine: Du’a Of A Fasting Person By Abu Haneefah Sohail
Beneficent, the Most Generous promises to fling open the doors to His expansive and all-encompassing Mercy, we should eagerly flock to take advantage of His promise. But the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Salutation be upon him) went further and specified: ‘Three supplications will not be rejected, the supplication of the parent for his child, the supplication of the one who is fasting, and the supplication of the traveller[2].’
The fasting person has a golden moment where their every request will be accepted. A moment which is so precious that the invocation of any one of us can be elevated to the invocation of the just ruler. The same just rulers who will recline on pulpits of light in the Hereafter, and be shaded by the throne of Allāh on the day where there is no shade, except His shade.
It is not only the status and honour of the month of Ramadān which attracts Allāh’s all-encompassing Mercy, but specifically the state of fasting. Little wonder that the fasting person has a divine promise which is sure to be fulfilled when Allāh has

book of Allāh, then for him is a reward, and a reward is multiplied by ten” [3]
This Ramadān a lot of us will no doubt be increasing the amount of Qur’ān we read, recite and reflect upon. A sad reality is, however, many of us may be losing out on multiplying and maximising the blessings and benefits we receive from doing this action, as well as others.
For it to fill our heart. The Prophet (SallaAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, “The man who has nothing of the Qur’ān inside him is like a ruined house.” [4] For us to memorise and act on every verse we recite so that we can ascend in Jannah. The Prophet (SallaAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, “It is said to the one who recites the Qur’ān, recite and ascend, and read like you used to read in the dunyā, for your place (in Jannah) is at the last verse you recite.” [5]
The Prophet (SallaAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, “Verily actions are but by intentions, and every person shall have (be rewarded for) what they intended.” [1] Maximising the intentions was the trade of the hearts of the sahābah (May Allāh be pleased with them), the scholars, and those who know Allāh very well. They used to carry out one action whilst having many intentions behind this action, so that they were rewarded abundantly for every intention. It is due to this that Ibn Kathīr said, “The intention reaches further than the action.”
....
Below are some intentions that could multiply our reward if we have them whilst reciting the Qur’ān. Feel free to add more in the comments below. For it to intercede for us on the day of judgement. The Prophet (SallaAllāhu
‘alayhi wasallam) said, “Recite the Qur’ān for it will come as an intercessor for its people on the day of judgement.” [2] So that we can increase in reward. Abdullāh ibn Mas’ūd narrated the Prophet (SallaAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) mentioned that “Whoever recites one letter from the

already stated in the hadīth Qudsi, ‘Fasting is for me and I will reward it’[3]. Fasting is that unique of act of worship which riyā (showing off) cannot penetrate. Indeed, Ibn al-Jawzi said, ‘All acts of worship are noticeable (by others) when performed and it is rare for it to be free of some tarnishing, except fasting’[4]. Nobody sees a person fast in the same manner that a person sees other acts of worship so the sole intention of a person maintaining their fast in public or private must be the sincere devotion to Allāh alone. It is this sincerity which is a sure means for the invocation to be accepted. In the famous hadīth of the three men who were trapped by a boulder in the cave[5], each one of them secured their freedom and the miraculous moving of the boulder by invoking Allāh with their most sincerest of deeds. Indeed when Abū Umāmah asked the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Salutations be upon him) to command him with an action which would cause him to enter Paradise, the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Salutations be upon him) said, ‘Take to fasting for it has no equivalent’[6]. Allāh described the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Salutations be upon him) in the Qur’ān with his quality of being anxious for good for this nation, ‘He is concerned over you and to the believers is kind and merciful’[7]. He not only has directed us to all that is good and warned us against all that is evil, but has taken us by the hand and walked us through the path. After describing to us the status of the month of Ramadān and that the fasting person’s invocation is not rejected, he as the mercy to mankind that he truly is, directed us to the exact moments when Allāh will certainly accept our invocations: ‘Three men whose invocation is never rejected are: when a fasting person breaks their fast, the just ruler and the one who is oppressed[8].’ Indeed these golden moments are the minutes immediately before the breaking of the fast. A time when the fasting person is reaching the climax of a great act of worship endeared to Allāh. Indeed we may reflect that it is often as we approach the completion of great acts of worship that Allāh accepts our invocation. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Salutations be upon him) said, ‘The best invocation
ISLAM | 33 is that of the Day of Arafat’[9] which is the culmination of Hajj. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Salutations be upon him) was also asked: which supplication is heard by Allāh? And he said: ‘The end of the night and at the end of the obligatory prayer’[10]. This is of course a reference to the invocations which are made in the final sitting of the prayer, prior to making the taslīm. Note how these accepted invocations are not after the worship has completely ended,
their entire lives and die not knowing the feeling of conquering your carnal desires for the sake of Allāh. In this state of humility of the heart and gratitude to the One who guides, the believer raises their hands and invokes, and their invocation is accepted. Allāh said in the Qur’ān: ‘And when My servants ask you, concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So
How tragic it is to see that in these most precious of moments before the iftār you will see women racing around the kitchen preparing lavish dishes for gluttonous family members whose eyes want more than their stomachs can bear. but just before, in much the same manner as the pilgrim is commanded to invoke Allāh after stoning of the first and second pillar, but not the third pillar[11], which represent the end of the act of worship. Also it is a great wisdom that by invoking Allāh at this crucial moment before ending the fast a person will protect himself from any misgivings of self-deceit and being impressed by one’s own actions. In the long, hot summer days a person may fast up to twenty hours while maintaining their commitments to work, family and of course their other acts of worship such as prayer and charity. So by invoking Allāh at this moment the fasting people remind themselves of their complete need and reliance on Allāh and humble themselves before the King of kings who accepts no arrogance or pride in His court, as Allāh said in the Qur’ān: ‘O mankind, you are those in need of Allāh, while Allāh is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy[12].’ As the clock ticks down to the eagerly awaited time of Iftār, when the fasting person is promised two delights[13], the heart of the believer should soften in recognition of the great favour conferred by Allāh on him. How many countless millions walk around on the streets heedless, never tasting the sweetness of faith, and never tasting the sweetness of food after a day of fasting? They will live
let them respond to Me and believe in Me, that they may be guided.’[14] Allāh has ordered that He be invoked and connected invoking Him with believing in Him and obeying Him. We might well reflect that in this verse Allāh initially addressed the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Salutations be upon him), but the response, ‘indeed I am near’, is not to the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Salutations be upon him) but to every single human being directly, emphasising that it is He who hears every invocation made to Him and it is He who can respond to them all. But if we zoom out from the verse in Sūrah al-Baqarah and study the context of the surrounding verses we will notice that indeed they are the verses ordering the fasting in Ramadān. There are three verses before this verse and one verse after. Sheikh al-‘Uthaymīn explains in his tafsīr that some of the scholars consider the position of this verse as indicative of the invocation being accepted at the end of the fast. He further explains that Allāh has promised in this verse to respond but not necessarily grant the actual request, because it may be that Allāh in His infinite wisdom delays granting the request to increase the believer in humility and reliance upon Allāh, which thereby increases their faith and their reward in
the Hereafter. Or it may be that Allāh does not grant the request in this world but accumulates the reward for the Hereafter for a time when every soul will be in desperate need for a single good deed, or Allāh grants the believer something better than what they invoke for, or removes some calamity greater than their request. How tragic it is to see that in these most precious of moments before the iftār you will see people idly wasting their time glancing at clocks and double and triple checking timetables that have barely changed since the day before. You will see women racing around the kitchen preparing lavish dishes for gluttonous family members whose eyes want more than their stomachs can bear. You will see men in the mosques reclining against the wall or waiting at a dish engaged in meaningless small talk. For the sake of Allāh, raise your hands and invoke Him. Ask and continue asking until your heart is content. Ask for yourself, ask for your parents, ask for your family and ask for the ummah. Ask for the good of this life and ask for the Hereafter and know that you will tire of asking while Allāh will never tire of giving. How blessed is an act of worship enveloped by mercy from both sides: the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Salutations be upon him) said regarding the suhūr (predawn meal), ‘Indeed Allāh sends His salāh and His angels send salāh upon those who take the pre-dawn meal’[15]. And at the finale of this act of worship the Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Salutations be upon him) promised ‘Whatever is prayed for at the time of breaking the fast is granted and never refused.’[16] [Source: www.islam21c.com] Notes: [1] Sahīh al-Bukhāri 1899, Sahīh Muslim 1079 [2] Al-Bayhaqi, al-Tirmidhi – Sahīh [3] Sahīh al-Bukhāri and Sahīh Muslim [4] Al-Fath, vol. 4, pp 129-130 [5] Sahīh al-Bukhāri [6] Al-Nasā’ī [7] Al-Qur’ān 9:128 [8] Ahmad, al-Tirmithi – Hasan [9] Al-Tirmithi [10] Al-Tirmithi [11] Sahīh al- ukhāri, 1753 [12] AlQur’ān 35:15 [13] Al-Tirmithi and Ahmad [14] Al-Qur’ān 2:186 [15] Ibn Hibbān in his al-Sahīh and others [16] Al-Tirmithi

"Yes." What do you think will happen? Do you think the government will move to deport him? Is the family getting ready for deportation? When might that happen? Where will they go? "I don’t think anyone knows when that might happen and we are trying to shape where he might go. Clearly in 2014, Egypt is a different place than it was in 2006. And I don’t think that any reasonable person would think that Egypt would be a safe and good place for Dr. Al-Arian to be deported to. I understand he now has immigration counsel who is an excellent, excellent lawyer, who will be fashioning and engaging in those discussions with the government. What’s most important makin' do

Allāh says in Sūrah al-Ra’d, “Verily in the remembrance of Allāh do the hearts find rest.” [7] For it to give life to our hearts, light to our chests, and to remove our anxieties and worries. The Qur’ān is the spring of the believer, as rainfall is the spring of the Earth. The Prophet (SallaAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) used to say in his Du’ā, “…that you make the Qur’ān the spring of my heart, the light of my chest, the remover of my sorrow, and the remover of my worries” [8] For it to guide us. Allāh says in Sūrah āl-Baqarah, “This book of which there is no doubt, (is) guidance for the pious.” [9] And in a hadīth Qudsi, Allāh says, “Oh my slaves, you are all astray except those whom I guide, so seek my guidance and I
CONTINUED | 35 of priority is Dr. Al-Arian’s safety. "You ask ‘are they getting ready?’ From the moment I met Sami Al-Arian and [his wife] Nahla and the children, they’ve been ready for the unknown. It’s an unusual state of being for a family to have lived in for nearly a dozen years. So I believe that they’re preparing spiritually, smartly on what the options are. And I have faith that they’ll get through this. "Certainly I know that Dr. Al-Arian and his family so very grateful for the support – the real support – that they have received over the last decade, in terms of emails, outpourings of community support and they are deeply, deeply appreciative of this. I would just ask the listeners to go be witnesses in these trials, find out for yourselves what the government is doing in your names, make smart choices at the electoral ballot box.
"And yes, the First Amendment is alive. One would have you believe that it is just in the form of a corporation, that corporations can exercise free speech. It still is the little guy that has the right to free speech. This case is similar to a lot of other cases, and it’s different of course. But it kind of was a pioneering case, as you mentioned earlier, with the PATRIOT Act. What do you see as the future of this kind of prosecution? "I’m glad you asked that because in my view this case stands as a victory for free speech. Political
speech, maybe unpopular political speech, but speech nonetheless. And nothing the government has done and can do would tarnish the victory of that defense in this case. "It gives me hope as a lawyer as I travel around the country and internationally in defending folks who find themselves in similar situations. Many times you would think that the government might have learned something. These are political prosecutions in many ways – not all, not all – but many of them are. This is a strong precedent that we can keep looking to. And the jurors do not want to be dragged into a criminal court to cast ballots. They want to – as their duty, their sworn duty – to decide whether a crime was committed and this person committed it. And the way I read the Constitution, even if the First Amendment is on life support, it’s still alive.
couldn't do without was a simple square of virgin-white, quilted and oh-so-soft 2-ply paper towel, conveniently perforated to encourage me to neatly rip off as many as my cleaning-frenzied mind believed I needed. I confess. I was an addict. I reached for that roll umpteen times a day. A spill here, a wipe there. I reached for the roll. A crumb, a drip, a spot of grease, all got the entire 11” square towel. Cooking pan still
wet? Drinking glass not shiny enough? Mopping up after wudhu? I snatched a towel. Talk about extravagance! We were handing over $32 a month on “the quicker-picker-upper.” So we staged an intervention. Went cold-turkey. We purchased re-usable, washable cloth shop towels, red ones and white ones, 60 in a pack. Red for spills and white for drying dishes. I had an easier time giving up my Bob Marley cd collection when I
became Muslim than doing without paper towels. But all told, I adjusted successfully in less than a week, especially once we broke the Pavlovian stimulus by taking the paper towel holder down.

have and the most important one is to intend to do this as an act of worship, as it was commanded and legislated by Allāh. Allāh says in Sūrah al-Muzzamil, “And recite the Qur’ān.” [15]
For us to die while reciting the Qur’ān as Uthmān (RadhiyAllāhu ‘anhu) became a martyr whilst reciting the Qur’ān. Ibn Kathīr said, “Whoever lives upon something will die upon it, and whoever dies upon something will be resurrected upon it.” He based this on the verse in Sūrah al-Jāthiyah, “Do those who commit evil deeds really think that We will deal with them in the same way as those who believe and do righteous deeds, that they will be alike in their living and their dying? How badly they judge!” [11] For it to bring us closer to Allāh by loving His Words. The Prophet (SallaAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, “You are (on the day of judgement) with whom you love.” [12] For it to increase our Īmān. Allāh says in Sūrah al-Tawbah, “And when a sūrah is revealed, some of them ask “which of you did this increase him in Īmān?” As for the
So that we can increase in our knowledge of our Lord so that we can increase in showing humility before Him and manifesting our need for Him, and so that we can rely on Him in all instances. For it to be a reason for Allāh to make us from His people. The Prophet (SallaAllāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) said, “Allāh has His people (from the creation).” The sahāba asked, “Who are they?” He replied, “They are the people of the Qur’ān. They are Allāh’s people, and His close ones” [14] To glorify Allāh, that everything around you hears you reciting Allāh’s Words. To encourage your family and children especially to recite and glorify the Book of Allāh.
Homesteading is about getting back to basics, conserving and not wasting, sustaining over consuming, practicing the sunnah. Use it up. Wear it out. Make do. And do without...israaf.

Letter to the Editor Islam's Stance On Homosexuality Is Clear, But Muslim Link's Is Not Assalamualaikum, I am writing this letter as a concerned member of the community on behalf of myself, my family, and several close friends who are also disturbed by the article posted in the June 6, 2014 issue of the Muslim Link, “First Openly Gay Member of VA Assembly is 'Great Friend' of NOVA Muslims'. The article was in reference to a certain homosexual politician and his connection with some Muslim communities. The problem we have with this article is that it mentions this politician’s sexual orientation in a way which leaves the reader thinking that Islam may condone this or at the least not have any issue with such things. Further, the article did not even mention the clear stance of Islam of making such alliances with those known to openly and blatantly advertise what Islam considers as “Al-Fawaahish” or “Al-Khabaa ith” abominations or malicious acts. It is true that nowadays it is highly unfashionable to speak against certain cultural situations and in fact to speak against them is to be seen as prejudice. Nevertheless we know clearly that Allah has forbidden these acts and we know that Allah commands us in Suratul Maaidah to ‘cooperate together in Birr and Taqwa and do not cooperate
in sin and transgression, and fear Allah. Verily Allah is severe in punishment.” Anonymous, Baltimore. ----------------------------------------------– Wa'alykum as salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. We received several inquires and questions about the article concerning Adam Ebbin, his being openly gay, and the support he received from certain Muslim communities and Muslim leaders in Northern Virginia. Our article was news, not a statement of Islam's stance on homosexuality, and so it appeared in the Community News section rather than the Islam section. However, we agree that some mention should have been made by the Muslim Link or by a representative of a Northern Virginia Muslim organization, that Islam was against homosexuality, and that Muslim support for Ebbin should not be construed as support for his sexuality. Our intention in covering the story and in our choice of headline was precisely this – to create a discussion on the complex subject of supporting politicians who might advocate for some issues important to the Muslim community while at the same time advocating for
other things which are antithetical to Islamic beliefs and values. Community members are in their right to ask NOVA Muslim leaders under what Islamic justification did they show such open and strong support to an openly gay candidate; Muslim leaders should have answers that are more substantial than simply political expedience. Islamic scholars have a central role to play in who the Muslim community supports, and activists should make decisions with proper scholarly consultation, or they risk misrepresenting not only the Muslim community, but Islam itself. This is no small matter. On another note related to his article, we made a mistake in writing that Ebbin espouses values which “may sometimes clash with the values of conservative Muslims.” We should not have used the term “conservative” since this is a label imposed on discussions related to Islam and Muslims and a tactic anti-Islamic writers and Islamophobes are using to portray parts of the Muslim community as “good” and “bad.” The values of Muslims are well known, timeless, and just; they need no qualifiers. --- The Muslim Link
