As Primar y Nears, PG Muslims Get Face to Face with Candidates

By Muslim Link Staff Over the last several years, the Muslim community in Prince George’s County, Maryland has been experiencing growing pains.

With overflowing prayer halls, double parked cars, and county zoning laws that seem like concrete walls boxing them in, masjid leaders needed to have a serious face to face with people who could help.

On Saturday, July 31, about 150 PG County Muslims sat down, face to face, with nine people who all said they were all ears.

Community News Despite Small Turnout, MIST Nationals Still Thrills

By Saudah Ahmad Muslim Link Staff Writer (July 31, 2010) This past weekend the University of Maryland’s Stamp Student Union grand ballroom was filled with the boisterous voices of an estimated 180 students cheering as Team DC defended the home turf by winning the championship trophy during this years MIST (Muslim Inter-Scholastic Tournament) Nationals.

At 114, the DC team had more competitors than all other regional teams combined. Atlanta came with 27 team members, Texas with 24, New York with 12, and a single competitor represented Toronto.

MIST was started with the intention of bringing the Muslim youth of America together to learn about Islam in exciting new ways by applying the religion to the things they love to do, helping them better understand the religion and themselves, explained MIST Executive Director Shaiza Siddiqi. It allows students to intertwine their religion and personal life as they compete in a wide array of competitions such as memorization of the Quran, short film, photography, and more.

Those who attended the tournament this past weekend were able to enjoy a multitude of workshops and open session activities, all expressing this years MIST theme: Lantern of Modesty- Reflecting the Light from Within. MIST 2010 marks the 10th year it’s been up and running, “The growth [of MIST] is incredible.

Though it started off slow due to the small amount of out-of-state competitors, Saturday afternoon proved to be a turning point as DC’s Regional Director Adam Kareem helped excite the students as he led them on into a regional chant battle.

Cheers of “What side? Southside!”, “What town? H-Town!”, “New York!” and “DC Chillin’!” rang in the air as the leading regions attempted to out-do the others before the evening barbeque began.

The MIST competitors all boarded a bus as they headed towards the picnic grounds where the barbeque was held. A few hours without workshops, competitions, and activities gave the competitors a chance to truly mingle and get to know people from all the different regions that attended. They enjoyed playing sports for fun rather than competition and a nice meal before packing and heading back to UMD as day two of MIST came to a close. “I’ve been to every single national these past three years, and I actually enjoyed DC [the best] because they were different. Expo Showcases Muslim Businesswomen By a Contributing Writer The first annual Support Our Sisters Expo showcasing local Muslim businesswomen took place at ADAMS Center in Sterling, VA Saturday, July 24, 2010.

According to event organizers, Sisters in Solidarity to Educate, Respond & Serve (SISTERS), the expo was organized “to promote women-owned and operated businesses” Laurie Jaghlit, SISTERS’ Chairwoman explained. “Just within our small organization we have women doing remarkable things and we knew if we reached out to the local communities, we would find more of the same…and we did.”

SISTERS kept table rental prices low at $25 in order to encourage both small

and large businesses to participate in the expo.

Even though the temperatures outside reached over 100 degrees, a steady stream of shoppers filled the bazaar area. The vendors included those selling clothing, hijabs, jewelry, skin products, magazines, toys and an array of delicious delicacies at the SISTERS bake sale tables.

Several businesses offering services were also represented including a real estate agent, a Quran school, and home health services. Two new area businesses were also in attendance; the Nur Café, a Center for Art, Fitness and Enrichment (CAFÉ) scheduled to open in September, 2010 in Falls Church, VA as well as a wellness studio and boutique located in the Tyson’s area. was another group present at the Expo.

They have a network of young Muslim families in the Fairfax/Loudoun County areas who offer organized playgroups, mom’s night out and other events aimed at young families.

Along with the bazaar, the Expo offered several business-related workshops.

Sr Inayat Sahin presented a workshop entitled, Turning your Passion into a Business.

She shared with the attendees how she took her love for the environment and all that is green and turned it into her business, Beyond Green Living, a consulting company that teaches families how to “go green.”

The room listened intently to Sr. Zainab Alwani expound on the lives and works of famous Muslim businesswomen throughout history. From some of the wives of the Prophet (Salallahu

‘alyhi wa sallam) to various waqfs (endowments) set up and maintained by Muslim women, the audience learned how women run businesses were not only allowed, but also played a vital role in the development of the early Muslim communities. Finally, Sr Nadhira Al Khalili, staff attorney for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) presented a “Know your Rights” workshop focusing on issues concerning women in the American workplace.

Silat school wins at Prestigious Martial Arts Tournaments By contributing writers The Prophet (Peace be upon him) stated, “Verily, Allah loves that when anyone of you do something that he should seek to perfect it” (Al-Bayhaqi)”. In this light, Al-Azhar Pencak school continued its quest to excel in martial arts.

The DC based Martial Arts school accepted the latest challenge of competing in one of the most prestigious martial arts tournaments in the USA, the US Capitol Classics. In this international tournament, competitors come from as far as China to compete and showcase their skills in the martial arts.

Prior to this event on January 16, 2010, Al-Azhar Pencak Silat school competed at the John Chung martial arts tournament in Reston, Virginia. Competitors for this open tournament came from around the DC metropolitan area to compete. The following Al-Azhar Silat practitioners won first place trophies: Afra Nirar, Sakina Ahmad, Tahmeed Ullah, Ashraf Ullah, Ahnaf Khan (tied for first place) and Kak Terra Kurnia. Other students also won second and third place trophies.

The Al-Azhar school of martial arts trains in a style of martial arts called “Pencak

Silat” (or Silat for short) practiced in countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines, etc.

Originating around 2000 B.C., the crude form of Pencak Silat was developed from observations of animal movements and natural surroundings. In recent times, it has been developed and structured by Muslims of Malay heritage. Although Silat is popular in Europe and many other places throughout the world, it is still relatively new in the United States.

On July 31, 2010, eight students and two instructors drove to the Gaylord Hotel at the National Harbor in Maryland for the US Capitol Classics international tournament. The Al-Azhar team began the competition together with prayer as they begin all tournaments and classes.

Later, other advance students came to watch and encourage the competitors.

Jumping Their Way to Health at ADAMS

Muslim Link Contributing Writer Many have fond memories of youthful summer days beautiful enough to spend entire afternoons galavanting around outdoors. Little girls on the sidewalk played hopscotch not far from a vigilant group of kids, brows furrowed, lips curled, knelling inches from the pavement, knocking marbles out of an imperfect chalk ring drawn on the blacktop.

Sometimes there was some patty-cake accompanied by rhymes about sweets, or sometimes a little competitive hacky sacking, but there was always jump roping. It seemed to be the quintessential summer activity that never went out of style.

Well, jump roping isn’t just for kids

anymore, particularly not for mother Ann Raheem, who started a sisters jump rope club at the All Dulles Area Muslim Society center.

“I started it because I saw how my niece enjoyed jump roping and was trying to learn some tricks, and I remembered about a jump roping club I had seen when I was a kid. I looked up jump roping clubs so we could put her to one, but couldn’t find one in the area, so I thought we should just start our own.”

With her five year old daughter in tow, Raheem held her first club meeting on July 28th. Though a modest gathering, she is hopeful that the club will grow as people embrace the opportunity to combine fun with a little exercise.

“I would say the exercise is part of it, but in general, [it’s] just trying to learn new things, setting goals and accomplishing

them. It’s also nice to meet new people, and for sisters to be able to exercise freely.”

However, It’s more than just a physical exercise. According to the American Heart Association jump roping, and activities like it, can actually prepare the brain for optimal learning. By raising heart rate more blood flows to the brain.

When more blood flows to the brain, more nutrients and oxygen reach it resulting in a good workout for the noggin as well as the rest of the body.

At a 2000 Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) convention, the idea of beat awareness and beat competency was discussed alongside the way human language is understood. The better an individual is able to keep a beat and rhythm, like that required while jump roping, the more fluid language

acquisition became.

When getting the family to the gym regularly is not within time or budget, jump rope packs plenty of health benefit in a convenient recession-proof package.

Raheem believes her being active has an immediate affect on her daughter’s health.

“Kids are watching everything we do, and if we are healthy and active, they see it, and they will have so much more fun if they do it with us.”

The sisters Jump Rope Club is scheduled to meet Wednesdays between 5:30 and 7:00 at the ADAMS Center until Ramadan and then resume again after Ramadan, Insha’Allah.

ADAMS Hosts Discussion on Muslims, National Security

Muslim Link Contributing Writer Chicago based organization, Muslims for a Safe America, attempts to take on broad issues through the most basic of methods -- honest and open discussion.

Founder Kamran Memon travels around the country by invitation, toting little more than critical sheets of brightly colored papers.

On July 23, 2010, the All Dulles Area

Muslim Society (ADAMS) Center in Sterling, Virginia hosted a community discussion called “American Muslims and American National Security: Where Do We Stand?” moderated by Memon, who grew up in Maryland where he attended the Muslim Community Center in Silver Spring.

Memon passed out printed pages in shades of blue, orange, green and pink; colorful in both a literal and figurative sense. On them were printed headings of controversial topics. One read, “Are

Western Civilians Legitimate Targets in War.” A modestly sized group gathered in the prayer area of the center and listened intently to Memon discuss the need for conversation and debate on controversial issues impacting the Muslim community.

What began as a quaint introduction became a heartfelt discussion between community members as individuals debated both sides of the topics. Is it okay for the government to monitor mosques?

To one sister, it was perfectly legitimate and Muslims should expect it in light of recent acts of terrorism. To another, the very idea of allowing such activity to go unquestioned was a blow to civil liberties and should not only not be tolerated but should be spoken against.

If you’ve ever wondered if Muslims should join the armed forces or found yourself engaged in heated arguments over whether or not the FBI is listening into your conversations, you’re likely not alone. Brimming with controversy, these

issues, and issues like them have found there way into everything from backyard barbecues to official meetings.

In an effort to educate Muslim American’s on these issues, Memon and his organization, are tackling taboo topics in Muslim communities around the nation.

What began as a post 9/11 idea, Muslims for a Safe America has grown into an interactive discussion where community members are encouraged to engage in intelligent debates.

“After 9/11 I realized that our community needs to deal with a lot of issues and some of the issues where issues relating to our identity as Muslims and Americans in light of the tensions caused by America’s foreign policy in the Muslim world and tensions we have because of our connections to American and at the same time the Muslim world,” said Memon.

The PG County Council is the 9-member legislative assembly which makes laws – including zoning laws – governing the county; each district is represented by one elected official. Both Al-Huda School and ICCL fall under District 1, currently represented by Tom Dernoga.

Dernoga must vacate his seat on the County Council due to term limits; he is now campaigning to be the next States’s Attorney for PG County, the top lawyer representing the County and managing the County office that conducts prosecutions, investigations, and litigation on behalf of PG County.

Because of Dernoga’s influential role on the PG County Council during the last few years at a time when ICCL and Al-Huda School struggled to deal with zoning and permitting issues, many Muslims were eager to hear what he had to say.

Held at Al-Huda School in College Park, Maryland, the two-hour forum was moderated by attorney Anu Kemet from the PGCMC. After the recitation of Qur’an by College Park sixth grader Tahmid Hossain, Kemet invited representatives from the two masajid in District 1 to welcome the candidates.

Board members from both masajid said they were happy the candidates responded to their invitation to participate in the forum, and emphasized the deep roots their respective congregations have in PG County. “We are looking forward to working with you towards our community goals,” said ICCL President Hayder Qaadri.

Candidates took three minutes each to introduce themselves; a front row volunteer kept time, flashing a yellow card when two minutes elapsed, and a red card signaling candidates to stop speaking.

The candidates present included Prince George’s County Council hopefuls Valerie Cunningham, Sam Epps, Mary Lehman, Fred Smalls, and Crystal Thomson, and State’s Attorney contenders Angela Alsobrooks, Tom Dernoga, Mark Spencer, Joseph Wright.

Prince Georges County Council .. that is something that I’ll work diligently to ensure that there is not an appearance of impropriety … we will deal ethically and honestly with those who attempt to do business in PG County,” said Cunningham, who is a member of the Ethics Commission of Laurel.

The question and answer period was the main segment of the forum, and using index cards to send in their questions, audience members quickly let candidates know their top concern.

Some PG Muslims held a small fundraising dinner for State’s Attorney candidate Mark Spencer the night before the forum; the Washington Post and PG Gazette newspapers recently endorsed Alsobrooks for that position.

“I have one mass of zoning questions,” Kemet said, choosing only two of the zoning related questions to ask. The first question dealt with candidates’ views on zoning restrictions on growing Muslim communities.

All the State’s Attorney candidates promoted themselves as being tough on crime, dedicated to making the county a safe place to live, and dispensing “equal justice”. All of them greeted the Muslim crowd with “assalamu’alykum” except Dernoga. Some County Council candidates also greeted the audience with “assalamu’alykum”.

“I think [expansion] is great … the key is planning,” said candidate Crystal Thomson, adding everyone needs to sit down, define their needs, and then work together.

Most County Council candidates promoted their dedication to service and their experience on city councils and commissions in the county. One Council candidate – retired federal prosecutor Valerie Cunningham from Laurel, used her lack of legislative experience as a plus, saying she is not part of the “political machine”.

Sam Epps said no one should be left out of the discussion, and that the county must “streamline the process” for occupancy permits and site plan approvals.

Mary Lehman – endorsed by Tom Dernoga – stressed any expansion must meet standards and codes. However, she acknowledged the community’s fear of unfair treatment by zoning authorities.

“I was troubled seeing how many of our children transition from homes to schools to prisons .. I believe there is something we need to different in our society … our foundation needs to be reinforced,” said Cunningham, implying the foundation is a moral one aided by religious institutions.

“I was disturbed today when I heard from one of your members that there is a perception that [Al-Huda School] was treated differently when it came to getting your use and occupancy permit and wanting to use this space for Friday prayers … that can’t be tolerated, whether its true or not, everyone needs to be treated with respect and dignity,” said Lehman, a strong advocate for environmental causes.

When asked about their views on a law passed during the Clinton administration restoring “the general rule that state or local officials may not substantially burden religious exercise” through things like local zoning ordinances, all of the council candidates admitted they were unaware of the law. Cunningham said in general she “would support exceptions or exemptions [for worship centers]” and look at their cases “objectively”, while Mary Lehman said centers of worship shouldn’t receive preferential treatment.

“Generally, their should not be a higher standard or threshold for environmental studies, traffic impact studies … but there shouldn’t be a lower threshold either,” said Lehman.

After closing remarks, the forum wrapped up and the candidates mingled with audience members.

In small groups of threes and fours, attendees lingering in hall and the parking lot asked one another: which candidate was most favorable to growth?

The only fact that was clear is – four years from now before the next election – the Muslim community will be even larger.

Numerous speakers – including Safi Khan, imam of Dar-us-Salaam in College Park, Md., Dr. Souheil Ghannouchi, a prominent international scholar and speaker, and various speakers from around the world – told the audience to stick with their religion through all trials and implored them to strengthen their ties with Ethiopian Muslims and Muslims across the world.

“The conference brought Ethiopian Muslims from all over, including Europe, but also brought together those Ethiopians who knew each other through the cyber world, such as the PalTalk [online voice messaging] community,” said Najib Mohammed, founder of the First Hijrah Foundation in D.C., former Badr president and current Badr board member. “It brought together the Radio Bilal community as well – that is the first short wave radio transmitted from the U.S. to Ethiopia daily.”

Virginia resident Suad Yahya found the program both enjoyable and enlightening.

“In that sense, the conference was a success.”

Much of the attention was focused on the youth program – the first complete youth program of its kind in Badr’s conference history – geared toward youth between the ages of 13 and 21. Sticking to a theme focused on local community involvement, various speakers educated youth on how to step up in their societies, break the silence and misconceptions enveloping Islam and how to practice their religion regularly.

Boonaa Mohammed, an award winning poet, demonstrated to the youth that their involvement in their communities can be displayed through talents and voice.

“What they talked about and all the topics they covered kept everyone interested and was relevant and informative,” she said. “I enjoyed it.”

The main program was open to all conference attendees, while the breakout women’s session focused specifically on women’s issues in Islam. The youth and children’s programs specialized in events geared toward their age groups. The children took sightseeing field trips and visited museums across the D.C. area.

Conference organizers say the annual event gathers Ethiopian Muslims and helps them learn about Islamic values and

“I came just wanting to know more about Islam,” he said. “In the end it got me closer to my religion and closer to all the Muslims around me.”

Aside from Dawah (Islamic teaching) tours throughout the year, the annual summer conference – held in a different North American city each year – is Badr’s main event. Past conferences have been held in Toronto, Seattle, Atlanta, and other cities.

This is the D.C.-area’s second time hosting the conference.

D.C.-based Badr Ethiopia, a non-partisan, non-profit organization, was founded ten years ago to promote Islamic beliefs and heritage to Ethiopian Muslim communities all around the world. Ethiopia has had a significant Islamic presence since nearly the beginning of Islam, when the Prophet Muhammad sent some of his followers to Ethiopia to seek refuge there. As part of its mission, Badr sends local Muslims to Ethiopia to meet with government officials and community leaders in an effort to curb religious and political discrimination against the country’s Muslims.

Storm Closes Summer Camp

By Muslim Link Staff The short but powerful storm that ripped through the Washington metropolitan area on July 25, 2010 leaving hundreds of thousands without power for days also affected a younger group: summer campers.

Several schools and community centers holding summer camps had to cancel

their activities due to power outages and no air conditioning; with temperatures in the triple digits, even indoor activities at camps were hazardous.

DC MIST organizers had approximately three weeks to prepare the program for this year’s national tournament. They were faced with challenges such as

With the help of Allah they were able to pull through with minimal disruptions in the program by finding creative ways to engage the youth during the weekend such as the picnic they hosted. Many youth who weren’t competing came out and to lend the DC organizing team a helping hand.

Houston’s Head of Competition and former MIST competitor, Shaimaa Eissa, came down to this year’s national to represent the Houston regional organizational team. “It’s really sad. We usually have over one-hundred students come to nationals,” she said. The late notices and inability to fundraise enough money for tickets were among the reasons why many were not able to come down, she explained. If dates were released a bit earlier and registration for nationals was open while youth were still excited from MIST regionals, the turn out and excitement might have been greater, commented Atlanta Regional Director Omar Hamid.

MIST’s ultimate goal is to instill the love of Islam in the hearts of those who attend it. This years theme of Modesty has changed its fair share of people.

DC’s Team Lake Braddock Coach Khadijah Nassiry beamed when she said, “This year’s theme of modesty has been engrained into my team.” First time competitor, 16 year-old Mayisha Ahsan of New York’s team the Townsend Titans truly benefitted from the fruits MIST had to offer, “I always thought I was an “okay” Muslim and I always felt alone, but after coming to MIST I saw that there are other Muslims exactly like me.

I made many friends and I feel closer to the friends I made these last three months then friends I’ve known my whole life.”

The excitement from Saturday ran well into Sunday’s award ceremony where an estimated 300 competitors, family, volunteers, and guest gathered to celebrate the final hours of MIST 2010. One Truth, a local nasheed group, comprised of DC MIST competitors, entertained the crowd before the award

ceremony began. The night was filled with enthusiastic chants, overjoyed competitors rushing to the stage to claim their trophies and medals, and many performances. ACLU, CCR Challenge Targeted Killing Without Due Process Rights Groups Say It’s Illegal For Government To Deny Counsel To Targets On Kill List August 3, 2010 NEW YORK – The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and the American Civil Liberties Union today filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Treasury Department and the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to challenge their refusal to grant a license that would allow the groups to file a lawsuit challenging the government’s asserted authority to use lethal force against U.S. citizens located far from any battlefield without charge, trial or judicial process of any kind.

In early July, CCR and the ACLU were retained by Nasser al-Aulaqi to bring a lawsuit in connection with the government’s decision to authorize the targeted killing of his son, U.S. citizen Anwar al-Aulaqi, whom the CIA and Defense Department have targeted for death. On July 16, however, the Secretary of the Treasury labeled Anwar al-Aulaqi a “specially designated global terrorist,” which makes it a crime for lawyers to provide representation for his benefit without first seeking a license from OFAC. CCR and the ACLU have sought a license, but the government has not yet issued one despite the urgency created by an outstanding execution order. CCR and the ACLU have not had contact with Anwar al-Aulaqi.

“The government is targeting an American citizen for death without any legal process whatsoever, while at the same time impeding lawyers from challenging that death sentence and the government’s sweeping claim of authority to issue it. This is a dual blow to some of our most precious liberties, and such an alarming denial of rights in any one case endangers the rights of all Americans,” said Anthony D. Romero, Executive Director of the ACLU. “Attorneys shouldn’t have to ask the government for permission in

The ACLU and CCR charge that OFAC has exceeded its authority by subjecting uncompensated legal services to a licensing requirement, and that OFAC’s regulations violate the First Amendment, the Fifth Amendment and the principle of separation of powers. Today’s lawsuit asks the court to invalidate the regulations and to make clear that lawyers can provide representation for the benefit of designated individuals without first seeking the government’s consent.

The lawsuit that CCR and the ACLU seek to file would charge that the government has not disclosed the standards it uses for authorizing the premeditated and deliberate killing of U.S. citizens located far from any battlefield. The groups argue that the American people are entitled to know the standards being used for these life and death decisions.

“President Obama is claiming the power

inside the U.S.?” He added, “This sets a dangerous precedent for other countries that will only lead to more violence and further diminish the rule of law.”

While there are circumstances in which the government can legitimately use lethal force against civilians, the authority contemplated by senior Obama administration officials is far broader than what the Constitution and international law allow, the groups say. Under international human rights law, lethal force may be used outside of armed conflict only when there is an imminent threat of deadly attack and when lethal force is a last resort. A system in which names are added to a list through a secret bureaucratic process and stay there for months at a time does not appear to be limited to imminent threats or lethal force as a last resort.

The Inner Secrets of Fasting

Know, that in the fast (Sawm) is a special quality that is not found in anything else.

And that is its close connection to Allah, such that He says: “The fast (Sawm) is for Me and I will reward it.” [Saheeh alBukhaaree and Muslim] This connection is enough to show the high status of fasting. Similarly, the Ka`bah is highly dignified due to its close connection to Him, as occurs in His statement: “And sanctify My House.”

[Soorah al-Hajj:26] Indeed, the fast is only virtuous due to two significant concepts: The first: It is a secret and hidden action thus, no one from the creation is able to see it. Therefore riyaa’ (showing off) cannot enter into it.

The second: It is a means of subjugating the enemies of Allah. This is because the road that the enemies (of Allah) embark

upon (in order to misguide the Son of Aadam) is that of desires. And eating and drinking strengthens the desires.

There are many reports that indicate the merits of fasting, and they are all well known.

The recommended acts of fasting The pre-dawn meal (suhoor) and delaying in taking it are preferable, as well as hastening to break the fast and doing so with dates.

Generosity in giving is also recommended during Ramadaan, as well as doing good deeds and increasing in charity. This is in accordance with the way of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam).

It is also recommended to study the Qur’aan and perform I`tikaaf during Ramadaan, especially in the last ten days, as well as increasing upon the exertion (towards doing good deeds) in it.

“Whosoever does not abandon false speech and the acting upon it, Allah is not in need of him leaving off his food and drink.”

In the two Saheehs, `Aa’ishah said: “When the (last) ten days (of Ramadaan) would come, the Prophet would tighten his waist-wrapper (izaar), spend the night in worship, and wake his family up (for prayer).” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree and Muslim] The scholars have mentioned two views concerning the meaning of “tighten his waist-wrapper (izaar)”:

his (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) eagerness and diligence in doing good deeds.

They also say that the reason for his (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) exertion in the last ten days of Ramadaan was due to his (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) seeking of the Night of Al-Qadr (Lailatul-Qadr).

Using Your Time In Ramadan

Allah describes the discourse between Himself and the reckless and negligent on the Day of Judgement: ‘[And] He will ask [the doomed]: “What number of years have you spent on earth?” They will answer: “We have spent there a day, or part of a day; but ask those who [are able to] count time... .[Whereupon] He will say: “You have spent there but a short while: had you but known [how short it was to be]! Did you then think that We created you in mere idle play, and that you not have to return to Us? [Know,] then, [that] God is sublimely exalted, the Ultimate Sovereign, the Ultimate Truth: there is no deity save Him, the Sustainer, in bountiful almightiness enthroned!”’

(23:112-16).

One of the righteous predecessors noted: life is short, do not shorten it with negligence. This is, certainly, true.

Negligence shortens the hours and consumes the night. Hence the Prophet sallallahu `alaihi wa sallam said: ‘Two favours that many people are deceived by: health and spare time.’ The lesson being that many people are healthy and have a lot of time on their hands yet their lives pass by quickly before them without their using them or benefiting anyone. He also warned: ‘The foot of a believer will not move on the Day of Judgement until he is asked about four things and mention his life span and how he utilized it.’ Life is, undoubtedly, a treasure, whomsoever spends it in obedience to Allah will find his treasure on the Day when wealth and sons will be of no avail but instead only

A Delayed Response

While talking to himself Ibn Al-Jawzi was blaming his soul in a gentle way.

He said: I found myself in trouble, and so I made Du’aa consistently, all the while requesting relief and comfort.

The response to my Du’aa seemed to be delayed, and so my soul became disturbed and worried.

However, I rebuked it saying, “Woe unto you; look attentively at yourself, are you the one possessed or are you the possessor? Are you the one that is controlled or are you the controller?

Are you not aware that this world is the abode of tests for you? If you desire that your goals be fulfilled and become impatient when they are not, then, where is your test? Is it not the ultimate test when you get the opposite of whatever you desired?

“So, (dear restless soul) try to understand the meaning of the word ‘Abd, and whatever is dear to you will become worthless, and whatever is difficult will become easy.” After it deliberated over what I said, it became a little appeased.

I informed it that I had a second argument for it, and so I said, “Allah (azza wajal) is a necessary requirement in order for any of your aims to be fulfilled; yet you do not exhort yourself to work for His (azza wajal) pleasure. This is ignorance, as the matter should have been opposite to what yohu desire, primarily because

Al Aswad ibn Yazid used to stand in prayer for most of the night. Some of his friends advised him to relax at least for a small portion of the night. He told them it is this very relaxation he is in search of; meaning in the Hereafter.

ou are under the impression that the response to your Du’aa has been slow; yet you were responsible for this because you closed the door of response (to your Du’aa) because of your constant sinning. you are the one possessed. (You should note) that the mindful ‘Abd should make sure that he fulfills the rights due to the Master, and that it is not necessary that He (azza wajal) gives to Al-’Abd whatever he desires or loves.”

It made it quieter yet I then mentioned that I had a third argument for it, and so I said, “You are under the impression that the response to your Du’aa has been slow; yet you were responsible for this because you closed the door of response (to your Du’aa) because of your constant sinning. If, however, you open the door [by developing Taqwa for Allah (azza wajal)], then the response (to your Du’aa) would arrive quicker, because having Taqwa for Allah (azza wajal) is the cause of all comfort.” Allah (azza wajal) said: “...And whoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him (Taqwa), He will make a way for him, to get out (from every difficulty), and will provide for him from sources that he never could imagine…”

Sufiyan al Thowri once sat in the Sacred Mosque speaking to some people. Then suddenly he arose terrified and said; we are sitting here and the day is doing its work. There were among our forbears those who used to divide their days and nights into hours. Hence they allocated specific hours for prayers, recitation, remembrance, meditation, acquisition of knowledge, work and sleep. They ascribed no time for merriment.

As for their successors, they have been afflicted by the calamity of time-wasting.

Therefore, understand that if you do not develop this Taqwa for Him (subhana wa ta’ala), the result will be different from what you expect. Woe is me from the drunkenness of mindlessness which became stronger than any other drunkenness in confronting the soul’s aims to prevent them ftom reaching its hopes. It (the soul) knew that this was the truth, and so it became more tranquil still.

I said to it, “I have a forth argument for you, and it is that you seek a particular answer (to your Du’aa); yet you are not aware of the consequences that would result (if you were granted what you desire) because what you seek might be to your detriment. In this state you are like a feverish child asking for candy. “(0 soul) be conscious that your Master is more aware about your well-being than you are.” As He (azza wajal) said: “... And maybe you will dislike something that is good for You…” [AlBaqarah:2161

Suppress Your Yawn Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, “Allah loves sneezing but dislikes yawning; so if anyone of you sneezes and then praises Allah, every Muslim who hears him (praising Allah) has to say Tashmit to him [Tashmit is the following prayer “May Allah show you his mercy]. But as regards yawning, it is from Satan, so if one of you yawns, he should try his best to stop it, for when anyone of you yawns, Satan laughs at him.” (Source: Bukhari)

Allah the Sublime and Most Excellent Speaker affirms in the Quran: ‘Verily, for all believers prayer is indeed a sacred duty linked to particular times [of day]’ (4:104).

The month of Ramadan is a school in which the Muslim’s time is organized and invested in matters that lead to closeness to Allah. Notwithstanding, some people do not know the meaning of fasting. They engage in ample negligence and deep slumber. They spend their days sleeping and their nights in wasted wakefulness.

As for the general fast, then it is the refraining of the stomach and the private parts from fulfilling their desires.

The specific fast is the refraining of ones gaze, tongue, hands, feet, hearing and eyes, as well as the rest of his body parts from committing sinful acts.

As for the more specific fast, then it is the heart’s abstention from its yearning after the worldly affairs and the thoughts which distance one away from Allah, as well as its (the heart’s) abstention from all the things that Allah has placed on the same level.

From the characteristics of the specific fast is that one lowers his gaze and safeguards his tongue from the repulsive speech that is forbidden, disliked, or which has no benefit, as well as controlling the rest of his body parts.

In a hadeeth reported by Al-Bukhaaree: “Whosoever does not abandon false speech and the acting upon it, Allah is not in need of him leaving off his food and drink.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree, Abu Dawood, at-Tirmidhee and Ibn Maajah]

Another characteristic of the specific fast is that one does not overfill himself with food during the night. Instead, he eats in due measure, for indeed, the son of Aadam does not fill a vessel more evil than his stomach.

If he were to eat his fill during the first part of the night, he would not make good use of himself for the remainder of the night. In the same way, if he eats to his fill for suhoor, he does not make good use of himself until the afternoon.

This is because excessive eating breeds laziness and lethargy. Therefore, the objective of fasting disappears due to one’s excessiveness in eating, for what is intended by the fast, is that one savors the taste of hunger and becomes an abandoner of desires.

Recommended Fasts As for the recommended fasts, then know that preference for fasting is established in certain virtuous days. Some of these virtuous days occur every year, such as fasting the first six days of the month of Shawaal after Ramadaan, fasting the day of `Arafah, the day of `Aashooraa, and the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah and Muharram.

Some of them occur every month, such as the first part of the month, the middle part of it, and the last part of it. So whoever fasts the first part of the month,

the middle part of it, and the last part of it, then he has done well.

Some fasts occur every week, and they are every Monday and Thursday.

The most virtuous of the recommended fasts is the fast of Dawood (`alayhis salaam). He would fast one day and break his fast the next day. This achieves the following three objectives: The soul is given its share on the day the fast is broken. And on the day of fasting, it completes its worship in full.

The day of eating is the day of giving thanks and the day of fasting is the day of having patience. And Faith (Eemaan) is divided into two halves - that of thankfulness and that of patience. [Note: the hadeeth with a similar stament is unauthentic, see adh-Dha`eefah: 625] It is the most difficult struggle for the soul. This is because every time the soul gets accustomed to a certain condition, it transfers itself to that.

As for fasting every day, then it has been reported by Muslim, from the hadeeth of Abu Qataadah, that `Umar (radhiallahu `anhu) asked the Prophet (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam): ‘What is the case if one were to fast every day?’ So he (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) said: “He did not fast nor did he break his fast - or - he did not fast and he did not break his

fast.” [Saheeh Muslim] This is concerning the one who fasts continuously, even during the days in which fasting is forbidden.

Characteristics of the most specific fast Know that the one who has been given intellect, knows the objective behind fasting. Therefore, he burdens himself to the extent that he will not be unable to do that which is more beneficial than it.

Ibn Mas`ood would fast very little and it is reported that he used to say: “When I fast, I grow weak in my prayer. And I prefer the prayer over the (optional) fast.

Some of them (the Sahaabah) would weaken in their recitation of the Qur’aan while fasting. Thus, they would exceed in breaking their fast (i.e. by observing less optional fasts), until they were able to balance their recitation. Every individual is knowledgeable of his condition and of what will rectify it.
