Muslims Speak Out Against Malaria Organizers Hope Momentum Continues After United for Change Event By Amina Haleem Muslim Link Staff Writer

among others.

On Sept. 5, 2009, a group of dedicated American Muslims came together for a landmark humanitarian effort - trying to raise awareness of malaria. The event, “United Against Malaria, One Body: One Goal,” was held at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center in Prince George’s County’s National Harbor and drew attendees and renowned speakers from all over the country. Nine major Islamic organizations, including Islamic Relief and the Islamic Society of North America, partnered to combat the disease that affects 350500 million people and kills over one million worldwide each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In relation to the thematic slogan of brotherhood, organizers used a well known hadith as part of their marketing strategy: “The believers, in their love, mutual kindness, and close ties, are like one body; when any part complains, the whole body responds to it with wakefulness and fever.” Insomnia and fever are two symptoms of malaria. Around 700 people attended the event to learn about the disease, how to combat it, what they can do to aid its victims and why Muslims should care. Seminar speakers included Hamza Yusuf and Zaid Shakir of the Zaytuna Institute, Siraj Wahhaj, the Imam at Masjid At-Taqwa in Brooklyn, N.Y., Fatimah Jackson, a professor at the University of Maryland, and Yasir Qadhi of Al-Maghrib Institute ADVERTISERS INDEX CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES

Organizers relied heavily of internet videos and social networks like Facebook to promote the Ramadhan event, held from 10:30 till asr. Tickets for individuals cost $30. “It is time for all of us to participate in something that is not only for the cause of mercy, but it ignites the mercy within our hearts so we can give back,” said Muhammad Ninowy, an instructor at the Madina Institute. “Many of those afflicted [by malaria] are Muslim,” Zaid Shakir added in the video. “It is time for Muslims to step up in a unified fashion and join us.” The conference aimed to facilitate support and complete the first goal of creating an action plan to tackle the issues of those who are underprivileged and suffering. The scarcity of medical resources and the abundance of poverty is a problem many charitable organizations like Nothing But Nets and World Vision have tried to reverse. United for Change and Islamic Relief have now joined this cause. Malaria is a preventable disease which develops and spreads in unsanitary conditions. That malaria kills one person every 30 seconds is a staggering realization that the national conference emphasized to its guests. In fact, malaria kills more people in Africa than any other single disease. There is a very large Muslim population in Mali, West Africa, where Imam Shakir had visited. His experiences there prompted him to create the organization United for FAZ

Iftars Build Bridges, Promote Political Engagement By Muslim Link Staff While American Muslims receive plenty of media attention this Ramadhan, high profile iftars are allowing Muslims to put more than just food on the table. President Obama hosted an iftar at the White House on September 1, 2009, inviting a select group of American Muslims including president of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) Dr. Ingrid Mattson, and the mother of an American Muslim soldier who died in Iraq among other guests. Muslim youth were also represented in Nashala Hearn who fought her Muskogee, Oklahoma school district for the right to wear her hijab and won, and Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir, a high school basketball star who set the all-time record in Massachusetts for the most points scored in a game. Mattson, the ISNA president, said she

expressed her support for the investigation into the CIA’s use of torture to Attorney General Eric Holder who also attended the iftar. The first two Muslims to serve in Congress -- Keith Ellison and Andre Carson – were present as well, in addition to Senator Richard Lugar from the Foreign Affairs Committee, Representative John Conyers, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Representative Rush Holt, Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, and Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius. Several dignitaries from Muslim embassies also attended the gathering, opened with remarks by President Obama. Other iftars around the region included the first Department of Agriculture iftar, hosted by Secretary of Agriculture Thomas Vilsack. Muslim employees from the USDA and other government

agencies as well as Muslims from the local community and local interfaith leaders were invited to the event held in Washington DC. On the same day, Montgomery County’s Executive’s Office of Community Partnerships and the Montgomery County Muslim Council (MCMC) co-hosted an iftar. Open to the public, County Executive Isiah Leggett was schduled to address the gathering and a short educational presentation on Ramadhan preceded dinner. The Prince George’s County Muslim Council had an iftar on September 17, 2009 at the County Administrative Building in Upper Marlboro. The Congressional Muslim Staffers Association (CMSA) organized an invitation only iftar on Captiol Hill, sponsored by the embassies of Bahrain, Egypt, Pakistan, Qatar, Senegal, Uzbekistan, and Oman. Several hundred people attended the iftar, hosted by

Congressmen Andre Carson and Keith Ellison. At a smaller reception before iftar, several members of congress and embassy dignitaries gave Ramadhan greetings to Capitol Hill’s Muslim staffers and expressed their support of Muslim civic and political involvement. On August 26, 2009, Islamic Relief’s DC office hosted an iftar at the Afghan Restaurant in Alexandria Virginia. About a third of the attendees were nonMuslim partners from non-governmental and other organizations involved in relief work. The keynote speakers were Ambassador Tony Hall, Director of the Alliance to End Hunger, and Dr. Yaser Haddara, Chairman of the Islamic Relief USA Board. Many Muslim community leaders also attended, including board members and Imams from several masajid in Northern Virginia, DC, and Maryland.

Every Muslim knows about the miraculous healing power of honey. In the Qur’an, Allah described honey as a “drink of varying color wherein is healing for men”. Scientists continue to study honey-based medical treatments. As early as December 26, 2007, the Associated Press ran a story titled “Honey makes medical comeback”. One company that believes in the restorative power of honey is Honeyderm, Inc., a Lansing, Michigan-based company whose mission is to bring the healing power of honey to people suffering from hair loss, dandruff, and skin disease. Honeyderm President and founder, Doctor Mahmoud Mousa, studied the medical use of herbs and honey in his native Egypt before coming to the USA where he completed a masters in Pharma-

Driven by his deep knowledge and experience with healing agents, and his faith in Allah’s promise about honey, Dr. Mousa invented Hairback, a honeybased treatment for hair loss and scalp conditions. Since 1996, over 10,000 users from around the world have used Hairback seeking to bring back their confidence and good looks, and the overwhelming majority have experienced excellent results. Abdurihman Khalil from Chi-

I recommend it to my friends and family always.” Mustafa Al-Omary in Sterling Heights, Michigan decided to do something about his thinning hair at age 40 and tried Hairback’s honey-based remedies. He said he would “absolutely” recommend Hairback to anyone. “It’s not a fly-by-night product, its ADVERTISEMENT

Najeebudheen Appat, a 30-year old living in Los Angeles, CA, had a severe dandruff problem for a long-time, and had been searching for a solution. “I tried so many different products like tonics and shampoos, I can’t even remember them all, until I found this product around 2002. My problem was solved completely, the entire thing is taken care of. I even called [Hairback] with the great feedback,” recalled Najeebudheen. Charlottesville Masjid Raises $140K to Move Beyond Shell Small Community Travels Over Two Hours to Fundraise in DC Area By Hiba Akhtar Muslim Link Contributing Writer The Islamic Society of Central Virginia (ISCV) raised over $140,000 at its annual fundraiser, held on Sunday, September 6, at the Marriott in Tysons Corner. The event, which was attended by only about 125 people -- less than half of what organizers expected -- exceeded the fundraising goal for the night, an outcome which Imam Siraj Wahaj, a guest speaker at the event, called “probably the best fundraiser I have ever been to.” The event was held to raise funds for the “phase two” portion of construction of the Islamic Society of Central Virginia mosque, located in Charlottesville in central Virginia, about two and a half hours southwest of Washington DC. Phase one, the construction of the building’s outer shell, is almost complete but still not usable, explained ISCV Vice Chairman Karim Mohammed, who described the structure as an “egg without the yolk.” The community is now using a thirtyyear-old house which can only hold

Other than its tiny size, the house also has problems with plumbing and radiation, which worshippers have to deal with every day. Imam Wahaj, who led the fundraising portion of the program, emphasized the importance of a strong masjid community during his speech, and cited a February 9, 2009 article in “USA Today,” which explained that the Muslim population is growing rapidly in

the United States. This growth can be credited to the presence of strong masjid communities, according to Imam Wahaj. He also served as the first donor of the evening with a personal contribution, a contribution from his organization Masjid Taqwa in Brooklyn, and a pledge for a third personal contribution. Other donors included a cancer patient who donated and asked for prayers in return and a man who vowed to donate half of the cost of his house if he could sell it within two months. The fundraiser

also included an auction, in which valuable items such as a bronze watch, large Persian rug, ipod touch, and various Islamic home décor pieces were sold. Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick, another wellknown speaker at the event, spoke about the revelation of Surah Kauthar to the Prophet (peace and blessings upon him). Dr. Quick explained he was “pleasantly surprised” at the outcome of the event. “I came here to help shed light on the >> See MASJID on Pg 13

ICM Hopes to Start Building Early 2010 By Hytham Younis Muslim Link Contributing Writer On August 29, 2009 (the 8th of Ramadan) the Islamic Center of Maryland (ICM) held its fundraising dinner to raise money for the construction of phase one of the ICM Master Plan. All praise to Allah, the dinner generated a little over $100,000, which as of this writing has swelled to over $140,000. The Islamic Center of Maryland, located at 19411 Woodfield Rd. in Gaithersburg,

is dedicated to the establishment of a large facility which will serve as an anchor for the growth of Islam in the area. Since its inception in 1997, ICM has been dedicated to what Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) have commanded. In the light of the verse which states: “You are the best nation raised for mankind…” the ICM community is committed to building a viable and vibrant center for Islamic life which will benefit generations to come; both Muslims as well as the society at large.

Phase one of the ICM Master Plan entails more than 40,000 square feet of new construction which includes a gymnasium, a multi-purpose hall, classrooms, a commercial kitchen, eating area, room for child care, conference rooms, and other associated facilities. In order to begin construction within the first quarter of 2010, ICM needs to raise $1,200,000. Currently, it has raised a little over $800,000. Some ask why there is a push to build at this time – considering

the state of the economy. The reason is Montgomery County’s “eight percent rule” -- a law that requires a facility built on certain environmentally sensitive land to be limited to only eight percent of the area of land owned. It was fortunate that ICM acquired an exception to this rule because without such an exception even the existing temporary buildings would be more than

Dar-us-Salaam Copes with First ‘Homeless’ Ramadan By Muslim Link Staff The fast pace growth of the Dar-usSalaam community in College Park, Maryland comes with its share of growing pains. This year, due to the size of the Ramadhan congregation far exceeding the allowable building occupancy, the masjid was forced to hold taraweeh prayers at the nearby Greenbelt Marriot Hotel.

“It’s an added expense for us, but we had no choice, Insha’Allah Allah will help us through these challenges,” explained Imam Safi Khan. At Dar-us-Salaam’s first iftaar on August 28, 2009 – due to the cost Dar-us-Salaam is only having around five iftaars – Imam Safi thanked the congregation for “sticking with the community”. After searching for nearby locations for the last few months, the masjid Shura

was ready to rent a church due to its proximity and low cost. However, after many community members expressed their reluctance to pray in a church, Dar-us-Salaam signed the contract with Marriott. “The challenge finding a place was that virtually no place had space available for thirty straight nights,” explained Sayeed Jaweed, a member of the Shura. “We definitely turned the area upside down

looking for a place.” Dar-us-Salaam must submit a new site plan to the county with a proposed occupancy in order to bring Ramadhan back to the Edgewood Road facility. Last year the juma’ prayer was moved to a nearby hotel, also due to zoning restrictions. The masjid is also the home of Al-Huda School, the largest full-time Islamic school in Maryland.

ISB Exceeds $500K Goal for Expansion Fundraiser By Farha Marfani Muslim Link Staff Writer

conversion of the existing musallah into four classrooms.

Approximately six hundred people attended the Islamic Society of Baltimore’s 23rd annual fundraiser on Saturday, September 12, 2009. The fundraiser titled, “Building for our Future” focused on raising money to complete the Community Learning Center expansion project, which started approximately three years ago. Guest speaker Imam Siraj Wahhaj helped to surpass the night’s goal of $500,000.

Saturday’s program started with the recitation of the Quran by one of ISB’s homegrown Huffaz, Hafiz Mohammad Herbert. Mohammad is a product of ISB’s Quran academy, a program that produces a handful of huffaz each year. These huffaz serve the greater community at large by leading Taraweeh at local masajid and Islamic centers across the state. This year, sixteen centers are being served by ISB’s huffaz. The next step for the academy is to teach the Huffaz the translation and tafseer of the Quran, which is slated to be led by current Imam Imran Ahmed.

The project’s aim is to expand the area of the masjid by building more classrooms, extend the lobby and musallah areas and create a third floor mezzanine area solely for sisters. The total cost of the project is $3.5 million, and to date, $2.3 million has been spent. The target for the night of the fundraiser was $500,000, about half of what is needed to complete the project. Pending additional funds, it is expected that construction will finish by the end of the year. With the work of an all-Muslim professional and volunteer construction team, the project is now in phase three. Highlights of phase three include a new musallah addition of 5150 square feet (approximately twice the size of the existing musallah), including a brothers’ area on the second floor and a new sisters’ area on the third floor, extension of the entrance and first floor lobby, new bathrooms on the first floor, and the

In years past, the generosity of the ISB community has helped to exceed or at least meet the fundraising target. Even though attendance was low, this year was no different. With inspiration from Imam Siraj Wahhaj, who proceeded to get off the podium and embrace and kiss brothers who donated, the attendees (and even absent long-time community members who donated) were able to exceed the night’s target and raise approximately $575,000. ISB president Maqbool Patel hopes to raise the additional amount needed to complete the expansion project on the 27th night of Ramadan. Along with expanding the huffaz program, future goals of ISB include being able to accommodate more Muslims, especially with the changing demographics of

to ready to welcome and accommodate those people,” said Patel.

Ramadan Crowds Challenging for Area Masajid By Muslim Link Staff To many local Muslim leaders, this year’s Ramadhan is unique not because of the length of the fast, but because of the size of the congregations. “Let’s just say we are at capacity,” explained Imam Johari Abdul-Malik, Outreach coordinator at Dar Al-Hijrah in Falls Church. The weeknight taraweeh prayers are attracting well over 1,000 people, with even more coming for the weekend services according to Imam Johari. He emphasized the masjid – one of

the largest in the area– is complying with all safety andbuilding codes. “I think it’s the economy … more people find [Allah] when they are out of work, and people who have families find coming to the nightly iftaar is a way to extend [their budgets],” said Imam Johari of the larger crowds. Dar Al-Hijrah rents two church parking lots each night to accommodate overflow cars. At Dar Al-Taqwa in Columbia, Maryland, worshipers stream onto masjid grounds from a public park across the street.

At the Islamic Society of Baltimore, preventing people from double and even triple parking and blocking emergency lanes is a huge task for the volunteers assigned to parking duty.

“We have a tow truck ready, and we hired a police officer. We are giving out big tickets to anyone who parks where they aren’t supposed to,” explained board member Bashar Hijazi.

The parking lot at Maryland’s Prince George’s Muslim Association (PGMA) is also at capacity, but the masjid leadership is taking strict measures to ensure they maintain a good neighbor posture. One PGMA attendee said on weekends the masjid is so full it’s “breathing room only”.

Due to zoning ordinances and agreements with neighbors, several area centers rented hotel space in lieu of holding back to back Eid prayers at the masjid. Among them are Dar Al-Hijrah, ADAMS Center, and Dar-us-Salaam.

Welcome to the Neighborhood: Gwynn Oak Muslims Break Ground for Historic Masjid By Muslim Link Staff On the count of three, about one hundred men, women, and children yelled “bismillah hirrahmannir raheem [in the name of Allah, Most Merciful, Most Compassionate]” under a graying summer sky. The group had just witnessed history, right in the middle of their neighborhood. On September 13, 2009, the Gwynn Oak Muslim community broke ground for the first ever masjid to be built from the ground up in Baltimore City. With shovels in hand and donning hard hats – symbolic for the years of effort put forth navigating city bureaucracy and building ordinances – founder Yahya Cason, community Amir Presley Cason, Board Member Melvin Bilal, and neighborhood association President Mrs. Mercedes Eugene pressed their feet down, at once driving their spades into the dirt, and erecting a new permanence to the Muslim presence in Gwynn Oak. The ceremonial digging – two bulldozers were already parked on the grassy lot at the corner of Gywnn Oak and Belle Avenues at the periphery of Baltimore City – came after a line up of speakers and Baltimore notables. Board member Melvin Bilal served as the master of ceremonies to a crowd of Muslims and non-Muslims from the neighborhood. Dozens of residents stood off the site, leaning on the iron fence listening to the speeches. “In this community, we were asking Muslims to move here and occupy houses that otherwise would have been [left] in a denigrated state. So in this sense, it was a mutual benefit … to the Muslims they could [form] a community, and the the broader [residents], they benefited from a group of people who made a

Housing prices went from $30,000$40,000 to about $250,000 since Muslims started moving into the area in the late 1990s, said Cason. Almost 400 Muslims live in the Gwynn Oak neighborhood. “After saying [the testimony of faith], the next thing is we have to establish the salah. So that’s what we are doing,” said President Presley Cason, explaining the purpose of the masjid to non-Muslim neighbors. Presley Cason is the nephew of Yahya Cason. Earlier this year, the house which served as the community masjid since the community project began was demolished. The city declared it “condemned” last year and community leaders said it would be too costly to repair and maintain the structure over the long term. A three story masjid with a media center, a commercial kitchen,

and a youth center will be erected on the property insha’Allah. Next door is the Muslimat An-Nisaa shelter for homeless women. “[The activity from] the five times a day prayer at the masjid is the best protection for the women in the shelter,” said Sister Asma Hanif of Muslimat AnNisaa, watching the ceremony from the shelter portico. Also present was a non-Muslim supporter and neighbor who serves as president of the neighborhood council. “[If] we have some problem people to the community, she can handle any of them. She is a true friend of the community,” said Melvin Bilal of Mrs. Mercedes Eugene. Addressing the gathering, Mrs. Eugene emphasized how important the Muslims were to the neighborhood. “I remember what was in this area before you all moved in here. I love to watch your children play. I love to hear them speak. I love to watch them interact with adults with the honor and respect they give and it sets an example. I’m honored to be here, to be among you, to be a part

of you, and to fight to have you be a part of us,” she told the audience. Representatives from other masajid in Baltimore City made remarks in support of the Gwynn Oak masjid building effort, many of them expressing support for a city wide Eid prayer. Imam Hassan Amin, who moved to Gwynn Oak in 2002, said “nothing like this exists on this scale in the country.” Anyone who wants to move in is welcome, said Amin. Young men walked through the crowds, collecting donations and passing around pledge envelopes from an upside down hard hat. As dusk came in, the call to prayer filled the summer air. The Muslims of Gwynn Oak prayed under the sky. An iftar dinner followed. With tables and chairs strewn across a lawn across the street from the masjid site, it looked like a large family picnic. Several cars passed by and gave a friendly honk: “Welcome to the neighborhood”.

Al-Huda School Opens Branch in PA By Muslim Link Staff Most area Muslims know that each year, Al-Huda School, the pre-K through 11th grade full-time Islamic school in College Park, Maryland, grows a bit larger by adding grades, sections, and students. This year, however, the accredited school opened their first out of state branch. On September 3, 2009, over 30 children

in pre-Kindergarten through first grade started their first day of school in the Harrisburg area of Pennsylvania. The branch, which maintains a separate administration and teaching staff and is financed through tuition and fundrasing in the Pennsylvania area, has been in the making for the last few years. A group of Harrisburg area Muslims approached Dar-us-Salaam’s Imam Safi Khan and petitioned him to help them establish a

much needed Islamic school in the area. After many meetings and community surveys, Imam Safi asked Baltimore’s Omar Smith to head the project. New teachers attended Al-Huda School’s teacher orientation in College Park, commuting hours each day for two weeks to attend seminars on lesson planning, classroom management, and school policy among other areas.

The first annual fundraiser brought in over $80,000, a rarity for Muslim fundraisers in the Harrisburg, PA area. With the current rental facility almost maxed out already, Al-Huda is already looking to purchase a school facility for the next academic year. For more information, visit www.alhudapa.org.

Day of Dignity Brings Month of Mercy to City Streets By Zakia Amin

Muslim Link Contributing Writer Ramadan is a month of mercy. Allah showed his mercy by blessing us with beautiful weather on August 29, 2009, when the Muslims of Baltimore were able to serve over 1000 clients at the annual Day of Dignity. This year’s event was sponsored by Islamic Relief, Muslim Social Services Agency, Masjid As-Saffat, the Islamic Community School and Masjid UlHaqq. As the clients waited patiently in lines for a hot meal, health screenings, or supplies, they showed their appreciation for the services that were being provided. “I thank God for Islamic Relief,” one homeless 50-year old woman remarked. “They have truly helped me today.” Day of Dignity is being held in nineteen different cities this year, and Baltimore’s was one of the earliest. A number of volunteers returned from previous years, because it meant a lot to them to assist those in need. Nazaahah Amin, who often supervises the distribution of supplies, stated, “Day of Dignity always makes me grateful for what I have. Participating in it each year is a very humbling experience that makes me complain less about what I don’t have.” Bari Bako felt that,” Day of Dignity helps me to understand the essence of Ramadan. We are fasting, but serving food. We are caring and giving to Muslims and non-Muslims.” One newcomer to Day of Dignity, Narriman Alif, exclaimed, “I’ll be back next year, Insha’Allah. I’m sold!”

This year the supplies included toiletries, towels, sheets, socks, hats and shirts. Each client also received a hot spaghetti meal and drink. The majority took advantage of the free health screenings for blood pressure, glaucoma, prostate cancer and HIV. Over one-third of the people who received glaucoma screenings showed signs of glaucoma, which can lead to blindness. At least 60 men received prostate screenings. Asma Hanif, who performed blood pressure screenings, remarked, “Day of Dignity goes to the people where they are because they cannot get to the health care facilities or do not have health insurance.” Presently, Baltimore’s Day of Dignity is the largest out of all of the nationwide Day of Dignity events. The Baltimore Day of Dignity also visits areas where the homeless congregate. One man made sure we knew that he still had the blanket from last year and it helped him get through last winter. Imam Hassan Amin, the coordinator for the Baltimore Day of Dignity believes, “The people need a lifetime of dignity. Today we provided them with a hot meal, something to drink, supplies and respect. Everyone who can afford to donate even a penny should do so, because homelessness/poverty in the United States is an on-going crisis that cannot be eradicated in one day a year.” This year’s Day of Dignity was visited by several of Islamic relief’s staff members. Karim Amin, the National Coordinator for Day of Dignity, and Zeyad Maasarani, who works with the media, assisted in distributing supplies to the clients who live on the streets of Baltimore. Zeyad stated that “Day of

Gitmo Guard Who Embraced Islam Guest at Muslim Link Event By Muslim Link Staff Terry Holdbrooks grew up around drugs. His parents were users, and his grandparents were users. Wanting to do something worthwhile, and enticed by a signing bonus, Holdbrooks joined the army at the age of 19 in 2003. Deployed to Guantanamo, the soldier met Muslims for the first time. Watching over the caged prisoners convinced him that their faith made them – even under oppressive conditions – happy and content. On September 11, 2009, the Muslim Link invited him to speak about how he found that same happiness as a revert to Islam.

“I was miserable at Guantanamo, but these detainees who had nothing except a sheet, a cage, a tooth brush, some soap and a Qur’an, they woke up every morning smiling. I wanted to know why that was,” explained Holdbrooks, who now goes by the name Mustafa Abdullah. Holdbrooks has since been honorably discharged from the army. Speaking to an overflowing crowd of about 800 Muslim Link guests at the Greenbelt Marriott Hotel, the former Army specialist touched on the American educational system, Army propaganda, and his conversations with several detainees, the most important of them

now freed Moroccan Ahmed Errachidi, known at Guantanamo as “the General” due to his commanding influence over many prisoners. “I will always be grateful to Errachidi for the countless hours he spent talking to me [while I was on duty] … he answered all my questions,” said Holdbrooks. Muslim Link editor Minhaj Hasan said the event – which included a buffet iftar dinner and taraweeh prayers – was overall a success. “[Holdbrooks] has a different approach to speaking, some might say a bit free or sarcastic, but I think in the end our supporters found some inspiration in how he came to Islam,” said Hasan,

who added that donations totaled over $17,000. “[All praise is due to Allah], we appreciate our supporters coming out and especially donating. Our paper is reader funded, and we only ask readers to support us if they find value in the newspaper,” added Hasan. “We have a long way to go, but we are definitely on the road to establishing a Muslim media institution, insha’Allah. I hope our readers can stick with us over the long haul.” More information about Terry Holdbrooks is available on his website at brothermustafa.com.

Shelter Group Knocks Charitable Door, But Few Answer By Muslim Link Staff Despite homelessness being a cause no reasonable Muslim would deny, a Ramadhan fundraiser for a local women’s shelter attracted only about 50 guests. Muslimat Al-Nisaa’s shelter for homeless women in Baltimore planned for a full house in the University of Maryland at College Park’s Student Union grand ballroom at their September 6, 2009 event. Tables were decorated and accented with gift boxes containing dates with which to break fast, and seats numbered close to 500 but were mostly empty. Despite the low turnout, speakers offered insights on how to combat homelessness.

Congressional Staffers Host Annual Iftar Networking Event IFTAR >> continued from pg 1 NY), the organization has made the annual iftar a major networking event for Muslim community and political activists. Congressional representatives as well as officials from embassies from the Muslim world attend. Most members of CMSA – the group has about 70 members representing legislative and non-legislative jobs – are under 30 and represent a wide range of Islamic viewpoints and political leanings. An invitation only reception with about a dozen members of congress and diplomats preceded the iftar dinner. About 200 guests crammed the back of the room and snapped photos throughout the reception. Minnesota Muslim Representative Keith Ellison and Indiana Muslim Representative Andre Carson hosted the pre-dinner reception. John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) spoke early and at length on the history and value of hate crime legislation.

“If its done with the intention of intimidating a group, or making them fearful, then its a hate crime. To make democracy work, you have to make laws that are for real,” said Conyers, who is the second longest serving congressional representative having served since 1965. Special Representative to Muslim Communities Farah Pandith sat in the front row. Reporting to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, her office was created earlier this year and Pandith was sworn in September 15, 2009. “She will help us to build a foundation of trust and cooperation that will reflect the pluralistic values and traditions of our nation,” Sectretary Clinton said before administering Pandith’s oath which she took placing her right hand on the Qur’an. I pray to Allah that this masjid gets completed quickly.” The small-town nature of Charlottesville was cited throughout the night as being a reason for the community and the masjid not to be as well known as some other Islamic communities in Virginia. Charlottesville, home of the University of Virginia, is densely populated by students. Many displaced Muslim refugees from war-torn parts of the world such as Bosnia, Kosovo, and Afghanistan are also located in Charlottesville. According to ISCV President Emaad Abdel-Rahman, this is precisely why the community is in such absolute need for a mosque. “The students here are active with the masjid and we have worked together on projects such as Habitat for Humanity, Impact [a social justice program], and PACEM, a local shelter, to help distribute food to the needy. They want to have an impact on the community and need a designated place to come together,” said Abdel-Rahman. “There are many refugees here who need help to get on their feet and to live comfortably, and their children need an Islamic environment they can attach themselves to,” added Abdel-Rahman, whose eleven-year-old twin boys have spent their whole lives waiting to see the masjid finally established. Dr. Seemi Baig, whose two children are students at the University of Virginia, attended the fundraiser because of the role the ISCV community has played in the lives of her children. “I feel comfortable knowing there is an Islamic community at UVA for my kids to go to when they are away at school,” said Baig. “There is a positive impact and they feel as if they have support. This masjid is just a tiny house, and they need prayers and financial help to get more Muslims in one place.” To donate to the Islamic Center of Central Virginia masjid project, visit http://donate.charlottesvillemasjid.org/ default.aspx?a=0.

The way of life given to us by our Creator and practiced by our Messenger Sallallahu ‘alyhi wa sallam

Why do we delay repentance? Repentance is ultimately the goal that we all seek. All sane people are conscious of their numerous sins, and those who believe in Allaah and His Messenger recognize that they will be held accountable for their sins, and therefore desire to be free of the evil consequences of their misdeeds. Islam offers man the ideal way by which he may be released from the burden of his sins. The word Tawbah (repentance) in Arabic literally means ‘to return’. In an Islamic context, it refers to the act of leaving what Allaah has prohibited and returning to what He, Almighty, has commanded. The subject of repentance is one that concerns all people who believe in Allaah, and is vital for the Muslims to understand because our salvation in the Hereafter depends on our repentance to Allaah, as Allaah commands (what means): “…And turn to Allaah in repentance, all of you, that you might succeed.” [Quran 24:31] Allaah also Says (what means): “… Indeed, Allaah loves those who are constantly repentant and loves those who

The door to repentance is always open and will not be closed in the face of any repentant person, regardless of his sins. Expect this gate to have two locks: death and the approach of the Day of Judgment. purify themselves.” [Quran 2:222] One may have a real intention to repent, but there may be some obstacles to the path of repentance. If this is the case, then he needs to act without hesitation and remove those obstacles to clear the way to a happy soul. The postponement of repentance may be the result of either a deliberate desire to prolong the illicit pleasure derived from the sin, or doubt on the part of an ignorant sinner whether or not Allaah would accept his repentance.

However, we have to be certain that Allaah will guide us to success and safeguard us against our malice. We also must be confident that Allaah forgives our sins and that He, and only He, can judge us. It is only His Judgment that is worthy of our worry and anxiety. So we should fear Him only because sincere repentance removes all sins and disobedience. The door of repentance is always open, until... The door to repentance is always open and will not be closed in the face of any repentant person, regardless of his

sins. Expect this gate to have two locks: death and the approach of the Day of Judgment. The first was mentioned in the Hadeeth: “Allaah accepts a slave’s repentance unless his death approaches.” [At-Tirmithi] The other was mentioned in the Hadeeth: “Whosoever turns to Allaah in repentance before the sun rises in the West, Allaah will forgive him.” [Ahmad] Allaah Says in the Quran what means: “But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says: ‘Indeed, I have repented now,’ or of those who die while they are disbelievers...” [Quran 4:18] O heedless soul! Hasten to repent before the knock of death sounds and the time of repentance runs out. Do not get caught dying in a state of disobedience to your Most Merciful Lord. Satan gives you long hope and empty promises; he delays your repentance until your heart becomes as callous as a rock by being >> See REPENTANCE on Pg 16

The Crucial Role of the Heart Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon on) informed us in a very famous narration, commonly quoted with reference to lawful and unlawful, about the important role of the heart. He said: “Both lawful and unlawful matters are evident but in between them there are doubtful (suspicious) things and many people have no knowledge about them. So whoever saves himself from these suspicious matters (by staying away from them) saves his religion and his honor. And whoever indulges in these suspicious matters (will eventually) indulge in what is forbidden. This is like (the example of) a shepherd who grazes (his animals) near the Hima (private pasture) of someone else and at any moment he is liable to get in it. (O people!) Beware! Every king has a Hima and the Hima of Allaah on the earth is His illegal (forbidden) matters. Beware! There is a piece of flesh in the body, if it is reformed, the whole body becomes good, but if it gets spoilt the whole body gets spoilt; indeed it is the heart.” [Al-Bukhaari]

He said that after explaining that the lawful matters are clear and that the forbidden ones are clear and that between them are obscure areas, not known to many people. However, what protects a person from the forbidden matters and ensures that he remains in the lawful ones is knowledge; but beyond knowledge, it is the state of the heart. If the heart is good, then it makes use of the knowledge and it avoids what is prohibited. If the heart is corrupted, then the knowledge is of no benefit to it and it will indulge in what is prohibited. The Prophet (peace be upon on) during the last (and only) pilgrimage, informed his Companions and it was an instruction to the entire Muslim nation to come, that people are not favored based on their race or color, but rather based on piety and on how much they are Allaah fearful. After that, he clarified that the place of piety is in one’s heart.”

In these statements and other similar statements, we find stress being placed on the heart - that the heart is the part of the body, which Allaah has favored over all other parts. It is the place of faith, and had there been in the body another part that was nearer to Allaah, piety would have been placed there, because faith is the most valuable thing that a human possesses. It (faith) is the determination ultimately of those who have belief in Allaah - those who have accepted the message and who have chosen Paradise over Hell. It is the distinction of those who have belief and those who have disbelief. The value of faith is greater than the value of all the things of this world. This is why Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon on) said that for Allaah to guide by your hands a single person to Islam is worth more than anything in this world. For you to help someone to find faith is worth more than any of the things in this world. [Al-Bukhaari]

The heart is the place in which the correctness of deeds is judged. The Prophet (peace be upon on) said: “Deeds are judged according to the intention.” The place of the intention is not on the lips. It is in the heart. ‘Umar Ibn Al-Khattaab narrated that the Messenger of Allaah said: “The reward of deeds depends upon the intention and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended…” [Al-Bukhaari] Our deeds - what we do externally - are judged ultimately by the states of our hearts. Good deeds are in reference to those that we perceive to be a part and parcel of righteousness. Allaah will inspect the hearts to determine whether they are truly acts of righteousness. The Prophet (peace be upon on) >> See HEART on Pg 15

Keep the spirit of Ramadhaan alive all year As we enter upon the month of Shawaal, let us not leave off the many acts of worship we performed during the blessed month of Ramadhaan. Ramadhaan, for most of us, was a time of renewal and reestablishment of our commitment to Allaah and His religion.

The Quran is also the best way for a servant to draw closer to his or her Lord. Khabbaab Ibn Al-Arat said to a man: “Draw closer to Allaah as much as you can, and remember that you can do so by no means more pleasing to Him than by His own Words (i.e. the Quran).”

We fasted, gave charity, read the Quran and performed the night prayer. We avoided gossip, slander and every evil that would invalidate our fasting. But now that Ramadhaan is over, the majority of us, unfortunately, will put the Quran back on the shelves, will suspend fasting until next year and will abandon the night prayer. This is not the way it should be, because all of these acts of worship carry rewards and are of benefit to us throughout the year, in addition to the fact that there is no divine prescription limiting them to Ramadhaan.

The Night Prayer

The Quran It’s sad, but true, that many of us have fallen into the bad habit of only reciting the Quran during the month of Ramadhaan. By doing this, we cheat ourselves out of the abundant blessings that come from reading the words of Allaah. Reading the Quran is the best way to remember Allaah, it is a protection from the Satan and in it are cures for what ails us. For Allaah says (what means): “O mankind, there has come to you a protection from your Lord and a healing for what is in your hearts and for those who believe, a guidance and a mercy.” [Quran; 10:57] The Messenger of Allaah said: “Whoever reads a letter of the Book of Allaah (Quran) shall have a good deed (recorded for him or her) and every good deed is increased a ten-fold (reward). I do not say that Alif Laam Meem is one letter, but rather Alif is a letter, Laam is a letter and Meem is a letter.” [AtTirmithi]

HEART >> continued from pg 14 informed us that the first three people who would be cast into the Hell Fire are those who were involved in what everybody considers great acts of righteousness. They are the scholar who taught knowledge; the wealthy person who gave from his wealth in charity and the martyr who gave his life fighting in the path of Allaah. The Prophet (peace be upon on) in an authentic narration, said that some people from among these types of people would be among the first groups of people

Many of us passed the nights of the month of Ramadhaan, especially the last

the following words of Allaah’s Prophet. He said: “When any of you sleeps, Satan ties three knots at the back of his head. On each knot he repeats and exhales the following words, ‘The night is long, so stay asleep.’ If you wake up and remember Allaah, one knot is undone and if you perform ablution the second knot is undone and if you pray, the third knot is undone, and you get up in the morning full of energy and with a clear heart. Otherwise, you will get up feeling

now that Ramadhaan is over, the majority of us, unfortunately, will put the Quran back on the shelves, will suspend fasting until next year and will abandon the night prayer. ten, standing in prayer before Allaah. Just because Ramadhaan is over, does not mean that Allaah does not see us now if we stand in the night prayer. Allaah Says (what means): “Surely your Lord knows (O Muhammad) that you stand (in prayer) two thirds of the night, or half of it, or a third of it...” [Quran; 73:20] The Messenger of Allaah said: “The best prayer, after the obligatory prayer, is the night prayer.” [Muslim] The night prayer carries with it many blessings. For example, Al-Hassan was asked: “How is it that those who stay up at night have the most attractive faces?” He replied, “Because they are on intimate terms with The Merciful, and He adorns them with some of His light.” And for those of us who feel that standing in the night prayer will leave us tired and unable to go about our daily tasks in the morning, we should consider

thrown into Hell because the scholar, when he taught the knowledge that Allaah gave him, did not do so for the sake of Allaah. He taught so that people would praise him, saying what a great scholar he was and how knowledgeable he was. Allaah will Say to him: “You received your praise, what you sought in that world. But there will be nothing for you in the Next.” So he will be drawn off on his face and thrown into Hell. Similarly, the benefactor, who was generous with his wealth. He gave and people praised his generosity, but Allaah will Say: “You did it for the praise and you were praised. You did it for people to appreciate you.” So that individual

lazy and with a muddled heart.” [AlBukhaari] Fasting The Prophet said: “Whoever fasts a day in the way of Allaah, Allaah will place between him and the Fire a trench like that between the heavens and the earth.” [At-Tirmithi] Likewise, fasting wipes away the evils that arise out of person’s wealth, family or neighbor. Huthayfah Ibn Al-Yamaan narrated that the Messenger of Allaah said: “The evils caused for a man through his family, wealth and neighbor are expiated by prayer, fasting and charity.” [Al-Bukhaari] The Prophet explained to us that fasting protects us from our unlawful desires, shields us from the hell fire and draws us closer to Allaah and His Paradise. He also encouraged us to fast at least

will be drawn off on his face and thrown into Hell. [Muslim] The martyr - the one whom we all assumed had died in the Path of Allaah. We would think that his place in Paradise is guaranteed. But Allaah will Say: “You fought so people would say, ‘How brave this one is! How strong and courageous he was!’” People said it; they praised you, so he will be drawn off on his face and thrown into Hell.’ Allaah is telling us that ultimately, even the highest of deeds can be of no avail if the hearts are sick; if the hearts are corrupt. So the place of the heart should, in our minds, occupy great attention.

three days each month. The best days for this optional fasting are Mondays and Thursdays, or the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth days of the lunar month. Charity Allaah has blessed most of us to live relatively comfortable lives. But there are Muslims all over the world that find great difficulty in attaining the most basic necessities of life. During Ramadhaan most of us give in charity, but we forget to do so for the rest of the year. Giving charity is of greater benefit to the one who gives it, than to the one who receives it. It is a means of purifying our wealth, increasing our faith and attaining righteousness. Allaah Says (what means): “It is not righteousness that you turn your faces towards the East or West, but it is righteousness to believe in Allaah, and the Last Day, and the angels, and the Books, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to the kinsfolk, the orphans, the needy, and to the wayfarer ...” [Quran; 2:177] Giving in charity also allows us to express our faith. To truly taste the sweetness of faith, we must want for our brothers and sisters what we want for ourselves. For the Prophet said: “None of you will have faith until he likes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself.” [AlBukhaari] Clearly, fasting, praying during the night, reading the Book of Allaah and giving charity should not be relegated to Ramadhaan alone. These good deeds, and others like staying away from gossip and slander, are all things we should do all the time. By keeping the spirit of Ramadhaan alive throughout the year, we can safeguard our religion and will be able to seize many opportunities to earn the mercy and blessings of Allaah. [Source: Al-Jumu’ah Magazine]

We have to spend much of our time observing, being aware of the state of our heart. So there is no other faculty in the human body and existence that a believer should be more concerned about. We have to make sure that this faculty is functioning as Allaah wishes it to function. We should be greatly concerned about it. The Prophet (peace be upon on) often used to supplicate, beginning with: “I seek refuge in You, O Allaah, from knowledge that does not benefit, and from a heart which does not fear.” [AtTirmithi, Abu Daawood, An-Nasaa’i and Ibn Maajah] Source: islamweb.net

If the door of repentance is closed to you, it will never open to you again. What keeps us from repenting? 1. Hence, we should think about the statement which Ibn Mas’ood made: “A believer sees his sins as if he were sitting under a mountain which he is afraid may collapse on him, whereas the wicked person considers his sins as flies passing over his nose which he just drives away like this (and he waved his hand across his face to illustrate this).” [Al-Bukhaari] The Prophet said: “Take caution against minor sins, because such sins are like a group of people who temporarily settled in the middle of a valley. Then, they decided to make a fire, so each one of them brought a stick until they were able to make it, so they baked their bread. Thus, minor sins (when they accumulate) may destroy the one who commits them.” [Ahmad]

2. “What is the point? I will only end up doing it again” Such an approach is the result of a misunderstanding. Indeed, one of the conditions of repentance is having a real intention not to return to the same sin. This, however, does not mean that Satan will never tempt you to commit the same sin again. Thus, if you have failed yourself, and you returned to the same sin, it does not mean that your first repentance was a lie. You should hasten to make additional repentance, with a real intention not to return to this sin, keeping in mind that Allaah’s mercy extends over everything. 3. “Allaah is forgiving, so let me sin” When reminded of repentance and the hideousness of disobedience, some people would respond that Allaah is OftForgiving, Most Merciful. An atheist once said in sarcasm: “You should commit as many sins as you can because you are heading towards the Lord who is Most-Generous.” There is no doubt that such a view is complete ignorance of the religion of Allaah, because Allaah’s mercy is close to the righteous and not to the wrongdoers. 4. “I am destined to be a sinner” Some people may choose to blame AlQadr (fate) for their sins. For example, if you ask any of them, “Why do you not perform the Prayers? Why do you

not fast? Why do you drink or smoke? Why do you not repent from your disobedience?” They would respond by saying: “This is Allaah’s Qadr” or: “I am doomed to do this.” This is definitely a grave misconception and an evasion of the truth. Believing in Al-Qadr does not mean that one is destined to commit sins. It is true that Allaah has written all human beings’ deeds, good or bad, and only He knows the unseen, but the believer is not forced to perform a good deed, nor is he forced to commit any disobedience. Instead, he has been granted the ability to reflect, reason and then make a decision freely. Al-Qadr is only responsible for the calamities and blessings that an individual may confront because he can do nothing about them. For example, if a couple were to marry and have three children, then this is their Qadr. It is impermissible to fault Al-Qadr for our sins and disobedience because doing so is akin to being in confrontation and showing dissatisfaction with Allaah. Repentance wipes out all sins, major and minor: Being confused, some people may think that repentance is only required for major sins. It should be noted that repentance from all sins is obligatory. Even the Prophet (peace be upon him)who was sinless, asked Allaah to forgive him on a daily basis. The Prophet (peace be upon him) is reported to have said: “O people! Make repentance to Allaah. I swear by Allaah that I make repentance

to Him more than seventy times every day.” [Al-Bukhaari] Therefore, we all need to fear Allaah, ask His forgiveness and be aware that there is no sin that is minor with persistence, and no major sin with seeking Allaah’s forgiveness (i.e. if the minor sin is repeated many times it becomes a major one.) Thus, sincere repentance wipes out all committed sins. Never despair! Someone might say: “I want to repent but my sins are too many.” But Allaah Says what means: “Say: ‘O my slaves who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allaah. Indeed, Allaah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.” [Quran 39:53] Therefore, we should never lose hope or stop asking for Allaah’s forgiveness. Its importance is shown to us in the Hadeeth in which the Prophet said: “O people! Turn to Allaah in repentance and seek His forgiveness, for I make repentance to Him a hundred times every day.” [Muslim] Repentance is such a great act of worship that doing it can erase all our sins altogether, as the Prophet said: “One who repents from sin is like one without sin.” [Ibn Maajah] Source: islamweb. net

TML, Shawwal 1430 | Sept 18 - Oct 22, 2009 THIRD WORLD >> continued from pg 20 Here in America, health care is not considered a basic right. The results are less than outstanding. We spend twice as much per capita as any other developed nation, yet our health indicators are worse than most. Somewhere between 45 million and 50 million people are uninsured, leaving them with very few options when it comes to seeking health care. I’ve met plenty of people within our own ummah who have this dilemma--people who have chosen a diminished quality of life because they simply cannot afford that eye or leg operation. Our free clinics don’t provide that level of care. Sixty percent of the bankruptcies in this country are due to medical expenses, and that’s from data published this year, at the height of a foreclosure crisis. While malaria may not be a major problem here, plenty SUPPORT >> continued from pg 20 Dr. Phillips said that “Satan is our enemy in all of mankind’s affairs. of other controllable and preventable diseases like Type II Diabetes devastate America’s population in other ways. Plenty of solutions have been suggested to remedy our health care crisis in America and Congress will probably be debating them for a few months to come. I think, however, that the Third World’s solution should be clear. Those countries should try to avoid getting mired in an American-style health care system. If they must choose a Western model to follow, there are plenty of others, as Taiwan found out a few years ago when it introduced its own state-run health care. But surely God knows best. CONTINUED | 17 MARRIAGE >> continued from pg 20 that banned interracial marriages. The advocates of same-sex marriage have already changed the laws on the books in six states and their ultimate goal is to have an amendment to the Constitution to allow same sex marriages. Though the Delegate claims this is not an issue of political expediency, one must question his motives for taking this position. Is it required for Muslims aspiring to higher and higher offices in this country that they must do what is clearly displeasing to Allah in order to please the people? Do we as Muslims have to compromise our faith and principles to “fit in” or do what is politically expedient? Some Muslims will claim this is the cost of “doing business” and necessary for us to “get ahead” or “move forward” or “progress” message by stopping his messenger by condemning his statement in the strongest way, removing all financial support from him and denying him any votes during his re-election campaign. This will send a message to politicians that we will not accept their viewpoint on issues where Allah is removed and revelation is nullified.

in this country. We started with the noble words of the Prophet (peace be upon him) who brought the final and most complete Guidance from Allah Subhana wa Ta’ala. By his statement, at the very least, we must reject this unnatural behavior with our hearts. Better still, we should speak out on this issue. In fact, we need to do more than just speak out. Even Lut (peace be upon him) did not reject his people outright but tried until the very end to bring them to the proper way of life. We Muslims need to educate others about the true purpose of our lives and the glorious rewards that should be our aim. And, yes, we should even reach out to the practitioners of this objectionable behavior and encourage them along the straight path. Abu Saliha Maryland

Letters to the Editor Be Careful of Who You Support In 2007 Saqib Ali became the first Muslim elected to the Maryland State Legislature. In July of this year, Ali wrote an op-ed piece in a local newspaper supporting same sex marriage. Further, on an NPR morning show interview, he said that homosexuality is against the Muslim religion but “If I tried to force my religion on the people of Maryland, as they do in a theocracy, I would be doing a disservice to my constituents and to my religion.” Ali continued that he must act as a public official, which is

Muslims Must Stand Up Against Homosexual “Marriage” Abu Sa`id al-Khudri said that he heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: “Whoever witnesses a sin, he must reject it with his hand. If he cannot, then with his tongue. If he cannot, then with his heart, and this is the least of Iman.” [Al-Bukhari, Muslim & At-Tirmithi]

‘Third World’ Shouldn’t Look to USA for Health Care Models Assalaamu alaykum As a former Peace Corps volunteer to the West African country of Benin (20032005), I am pleased to see the Muslim community addressing the issue of malaria, as covered in the Aug 21-Sept 17, 2009 edition of the Muslim Link. Malaria is a devastating illness that can be well-controlled and prevented with the right amount of organization and

separate from his religious life. “And in my mind, there is a strict separation between church and state, or, religion and state” Ali said. What is especially disturbing is his additional statement that he hopes that his critics will come to share his point of view to promote marriage equality. He is therefore taking an activist position, calling others to his way of thinking. Because he is the first Muslim State Legislator in Maryland, he is in a position to influence Muslim youth and non-Muslim youth whose parents are attempting to instill in their children a correct moral foundation based upon God’s decree.

“This is the least of Iman,” means that there is no an rejecting sin with the heart. I bring this up because the first Muslim elected to the Maryland State legislature recently wrote an article advocating the legalization of samesex marriage in Maryland. The delegate claims that though his position is contrary to Islamic teachings, he states he is on the right side of history. Was the wife of Lut (peace be upon him) on the right side of history? It is one thing to hate an evil in your heart, but why would a Muslim openly advocate something that is clearly

commitment. However, as a newly-licensed nurse, I am a bit concerned with the statement that “the health care culture of Third World countries must radically change to replicate those in the West.” I know that the author probably meant that the Third World needed to replicate Western facilities, becoming betterequipped, staffed, and distributed among the general population. Beyond that, the Western health care culture actually consists of several different cultures, and there are certainly some that are preferable to others. In the many countries of the “West,”

If he chooses to publicly challenge Allah that is his individual choice which will be revisited. To take political positions that lead to moral deceit in opposition to what Allah has said is of great concern. Dr. Bilal Phillips in his lecture called the “Evil Empire” sheds needed light on this subject. His story is of an evil empire that expands the centuries. It creates havoc for all mankind. “We should raise our children being aware of this history. The founder, Shaitan, stood up against Allah’s order.”

>> See SUPPORT on Pg 17

prohibited? Yes, we don’t live in an Islamic state and yes we cannot force our religious laws onto others. What people do behind closed doors cannot be legislated even in an Islamic state. But it seems to me that every other religious community has slowly lowered its resistance to opposing gay-marriage, then tolerated and now even has some of its adherents coming out in support of this vile behavior. They claim that the laws against same-sex marriage are an extension of the miscegenation laws >> See MARRIAGE on Pg 17

(such as many European nations, Canada, Australia), health care is a basic right. In some cases, health care is completely socialized, or run by the government. In other cases, all citizens have the right to seek medical care in the state-run facilities, but there are also private options. I compare it to our education system, where we have both public and private schools. While not everyone is 100% satisfied with these programs 100% of the time, the overall health statistics for these countries are quite good.
