After two decades, the dream of establishing a masjid and community center in Maryland finally became a reality, and the presidential benefactor who facilitated a three million dollar donation to purchase a church and convert it to a masjid came with a delegation to witness the opening of the Indonesian Muslim Association in America (IMAAM) in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Community News Muslim Family Day Caps Summer for 6,000 Area Muslims By Muslim Link Staff Reporter The perfect end to the summer for over 6,000 Muslims in the DC Metro area was a sunny 79 degrees on September 20, 2014 at the 2014 Muslim Day at Six Flags America in Bowie, Maryland. Driving up the Bugs Bunny parking lot, minivans were packed with families eager to whoosh down roller coasters in what has become an annual American Muslim tradition. It was Maryam Khan’s first visit to Six Flags, the sixth grader hugged her mother close as she heard what sounded like the famed nasheed artist Junaid Jamshed singing Allah’s praises through the sound system. As her family walked closer to the entrance, her excitement grew as thrilled screams from roller coasters hit the same high notes as the nasheed artist. Several Muslim family members had invited their family of other faiths to join in a day where they could meet and greet other Muslim families in a halal environment. “We welcome non-Muslims to the events,” said organizer Haydar Mir. The entire Park was reserved from 11am until sunset. The organization lost money several years in a row as Six Flags prices went

up and ICNA subsidized the program, but Mir says they have worked hard on stabilizing the costs. The core committee that put this event together comprised of Dr. Mahmood Aijazi, Dr. Arif Mannan, Arshad Naseem, Tanveer Khan, Rashid Khan, Junaid Qureshi, Asif Khan, Mohsin Ansari, Amir Nazr, Shaukat Aziz, Yasir Rafi. They met 3-4 times every weeks for months, trying to make the event as Islamic and efficient as possible. “There were also many others who supported this team to make the event successful, but this group has been there from day one of the planning, and most of these brothers have been doing this for several years now,” said Mir Haydar Mir led the effort this year on behalf of the local chapter of ICNA. He says they doubled outreach in areas outside DMV. The organization sponsored the tickets of the women and children living at the Al Muslimaat Shelter for Homeless Muslim Women and Children. Friends caught up with familiar faces. Saleh lined up for a three-point challenge with friends cheering him on. He was hoping to win a gigantic Scooby Doo, but the Lakers jersey would do too.

Grandpas in wheelchairs soaked in the sun with grandchildren in strollers. “Freedom will come Palestine” played on the sound system as teens sang along. Mothers with young children shook heads at youth getting in line for kiddie rides. Riding the train with her 6 year old was Faiza from the Dar al Hijrah community. She feels comfortable coming to this event because she wears

the niqab because she says “in other places people tend to stare and I feel out of place.” Several signs marked prayer timings throughout the park. Congregational prayers were held in the Gotham arena while impromptu jamaat were seen throughout the park. >> muslim family day Pg 20

Montgomery County Muslims Offer Udhiya Meat to Area Needy The Muslim Community Center (MCC) Senior program Food Pantry had a grand opening on Sunday, October 12, 2014, at 2:00 PM in Silver Spring, MD. “We have waited for so long and worked so hard to make it a reality,” said Mona Negm of MCC Seniors. “This is a labor of love, the result of collective efforts and talents, financial support that came

together to bring our pantry to life. Finally we will be able to reach out and provide special Muslim families, children and seniors in our community with the sustenance they need’” she said. F o l l o w i n g D h u h r p r a y e r, I m a m Muhammad Abdulahi read verses from the Quran and made dua for the new project. Members of the MCC Senior

Program participants and several board members came to celebrate the event. Collected food items were distributed along with Qurbani meat, donated by the Montgomery County Muslim Foundation (MCMF). In all the Montgomery County Muslim Foundation( MCMF) distributed raw meat weighing about 3600 lbs to 500 less fortunate families residing in Montgomery County .

MCMF purchased 9 cows with donations amounting to about $15,000 collected from the Muslim community of the County. Should the Homeless Have a Right to Sleep On Public Property? Area Muslims Weigh In On the Homeless Bill of Rights By Muslim Link Staff

violence. Reports received by homeless advocates and shelters around the country prove that men, women, and even children are ‘harassed, kicked, set on fire, beaten to death, and decapitated for being in a state of homelessness.’

They sleep on the street because they have no homes, but should they be criminalized for this act? Last winter a homeless man froze to death in Moringside, Maryland. According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, approximately 700 homeless people die from hypothermia every year.

Maryland became the first state to include attacks against homeless people in its 2009 hate crime law. Washington DC followed suit. A statewide public education project in Florida to educate people about homelessness was initiated in 2007 by the National Coalition for the Homeless in conjunction with AmeriCorps*VISTA Volunteers. This project has now expanded to Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, and South Carolina.

Several cities have ordinances that make sleeping or camping out in a public area a crime, which advocate say targets the homeless. A coalition of over 125 social justice groups is working on a Homeless Bill of Rights for state legislatures. Rhode Island has already passed a bill that prohibit certain groups of people (mainly police officers, landlords, employers and medical workers) from discriminating against the homeless. Advocates have identified six main priorities for the the homeless after conducting 1300 interviews, according to a special report by Al Jazeera. Among them are the right to move freely and sleep in public spaces without discrimination, to sleep in a parked vehicle, to eat and exchange food in public, to obtain legal counsel, to have access to toilets any time during the day and to use the necessity defense in any criminal prosecution.

The LA Times in an editorial derided the version of the bill introduced in Los Angeles for ‘essentially turning the homeless into a protected class, and for encouraging behavior that is unhealthy and undesirable.’ They advocated constructing safe restrooms and more free storage facilities ‘so streets can be cleaned and homeless people can attend to other business, such as seeking housing and treatment.’

According to the National Coalition for the Homeless, since 1999, here have been 1184 acts of violence committed by

housed individuals in the United States, resulting in 312 deaths of homeless people and 872 victims of non-lethal

I can't really answer as I don’t know much about homelessness or what the state of Maryland laws says about the bill to really answer the question. - Sister “Karen” an office manager in Maryland.

the surrounding neighborhood. What I think we should do is to focus on the "homelessness" part of the issue in a compassionate manner. We should try our best to irradiate this from our community and rehabilitate our fellow homeless residents to a dignified and respectable status. There are creative and low cost ways cities can achieve that goal. [He also suggested a micro community idea where tiny homes measuring 99-192 square foot are made on public land to give housing to those without] -- Fazlul Kabir, City Council member College Park.

The Muslim Link asked local scholars, community leaders, social workers and community members what they think of the Homeless Bill of Rights.

MUSLIM responses: I agree with this bill of rights and if there are ways this causes inconvenience to the more fortunate (the haves and have mores), so be it. The system is rigged against the poor and even the middle class so steps like this one are a welcome way of society restoring some balance! I do, however, want to see this effort (or a parallel one) to include practical ways to reduce and eventually eradicate homelessness. Homelessness in an economic powerhouse like American is inexcusable and it, along with other issues of social injustice, has much to do with corporate greed and the politicians who are beholden to that greed. -- Imam Zia Makhdoom of MakeSpace in Alexandria, VA.

....

I know the bill is being introduced into a couple of states and cities, but I'm not sure it will come to Maryland Assembly or College Park City Council soon. I don't know I can ever run this through my constituents and vote on it. That said, I think the last thing we should be doing is to ignore the issue altogether. I tend to agree that there are some negative aspects of the homeless environment on the quality of life of

Historically the only reason for the introduction and establishment of any Bill of Rights is for the protection of

those marginalized by society. Thus it is expected that these Bill of Rights would limit the power of others to engage in a social injustice and the abuse of basic rights granted by the Constitution, (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness). Based on documented propensities toward inequality, there exists a need to safeguard the individual rights of certain groups from the arrogant tyranny of the powerful majority against the powerless minority. It is the supposition of arrogant human beings which allows them to believe that homelessness is something which happens to the ‘others’ but never to them. When it comes to the possibility

of being homeless, especially when we consider the impact that natural disasters have, the fact is that it can happen to anyone of us. A hurricane, an earthquake or a wildfire that is out of control can destroy a home and render anyone homeless within minutes. And yet we turn up our nose and turn our backs on the homeless with an air of haughty derision. As someone who founded, operates and lives within a shelter for those rendered homeless through no fault of their own, being homeless should not equate to being criminal. I know their worth, their value, their dignity and respect them for whom they are – fellow human beings. Homeless but equal. Due to the impossibility of defining all of the rights which man and government should respect, a Homeless Bill of Rights would end the criminalization of

people who live on the streets because “there for the Grace and Mercy of God”, could be any of us,” -- Asma Hanif, RN, ANP, Executive Director Muslimat Al Nisaa, Inc I think that any person who is homeless should not have the added burden of being discriminated against, just because they are homeless. They should not lose any rights, voting, treated with dignity, etc just because they are homeless. They should not have their children taken away nor be harassed just because they are homeless. Therefore, if the Homeless Bill of Rights provides the homeless with protection against segregation, provide access to shelter, social services, legal counsel, quality education for their children, etc. then I am 100% for it. This bill may provide for the homeless the resources and services they need to improve upon their quality of life.- Imam Hassan A. Amin of the Muslim Social Services Association

COMMUNITY NEWS I don't see anything wrong w sleeping in parked vehicles...but sleeping public spots and local neighborhoods I wouldn't be comfortable with especially because it could be a safety issue....exchanging food I don't see how that should be a problem either. Hygiene facilities that's a tough one to provide but if homelessness is a problem in certain communities it's important for there to have some access otherwise that would affect the entire community. -- Hafsa, Optometrist, Sunday School teacher Local and regional jurisdictions have implemented criminalizing homeless and homelessness. Feeding sites have been cited, streets and camps are swept. This whole phenomenon is indicative of a society that is not caring for their vulnerable, and of how our values have eroded incrementally in the last decade plus. as well). In Seattle, we see a dichotomy where citizens line up and are allowed to camp out on sidewalks when the latest I-phone comes out, Seahawks tickets go on sale or the night before big holiday sales. The homeless are asked to move along if sitting under a building overhang while trying to stay dry out of the rain, if found camping in a back alley or congregating near businesses sharing information about local resources. -- Janice Tufte, Muslim Community Advocate and founder of Emergency Muslim Resource Guides/ WarmforWinter Project/ Islamic Civic Engagement Project I do agree with the bill. Lets make our community safe for every citizen. Muslim Youth Taught How to Get a Grip By Jameel Aalim-Johnson

Muslim Link Contributing Writer For many African Americans golf was a sport that "other people" played prior to the onset of Tiger Woods pro career. Now Prince George's County, a majority Black county, boasts over a dozen golf courses. On September 28, 2014, Prince George's County Muslim Council hosted an introductory golf lesson for six young men from Masjid Ibn Taymiyyah and Prince George's Muslim Association at the Glenn Dale Golf Club. The lesson was taught by certified PGA instructor and former pro tennis player John Mudd. Mr. Mudd competed in the 1966 U.S. Open. Mr. Mudd spent an hour and a half teaching the young men how to properly grip the golf club, how to swing an iron and a driver, and proper putting form. For competition he offered a cash prize to anyone that could exceed his driver shot of approximately 200 yards. After several efforts by the young men Mr. Mudd joked about keeping the money in his pocket. Bashir Lamptey, son of Ahmed Lamptey,--an Ibn Taymiyyah board member--said he thoroughly enjoyed the outing; "it was a lot of fun and it showed me it's important to have patience." Ibrahim Johnson who hit the longest iron shots stated he had a good experience. "I learned how to use my hips to an advantage and how much force it takes to make the ball go in the hole." ________________________________

Islamic Relief, FAITH Join for Meat Distribution By Saman Quraeishi

Muslim Link Contributing Writer Every year Muslims across the globe follow in the prophetic tradition of Prophet Ibrahim and perform the Qurbani by sacrificing an animal and sharing among family members and the less fortunate in the community, this is done in an effort to strengthen the Ummah. Muslims in America usually donate their Qurbani meat or money to social service agencies and this year on October 19, 2014, Foundation for Appropriate and Immediate Temporary Help (FAITH) and Islamic Relief came together in Herndon to distribute Qurbani meat to FAITH clients and other low-income families. Islamic Relief donated over 800 pounds of meat and FAITH provided rice and oil in addition to the meat.

.ORG/connect

More than a hundred people came out to receive the Qurbani meat and food staples. FAITH Social workers said that the Qurbani meat distribution is very important for the clients that they work with. The Qurbani is a community event and people want to be part of the Qurbani distribution because the Muslim clients feel a spiritual connection. “Qurbani meat brings a lot of joy and spirituality, also the fact that it is Zabiha and halal meat is very emotionally uplifting to my clients,” said Ayesha Haya, a social worker at FAITH. Clients came from as far as Maryland to receive the meat. Ayesha added that clients often do not eat meat because it expensive. “A lot of my clients will forego meat and instead with their food stamps buy lentils and other cheaper alternative to protein.” FAITH has been distributing Qurbani meat for the past 9 years but since last year Islamic Relief has been partnering with FAITH to provide FAITH client’s with organic grass fed beef. “Many of our clients are able to access food and other items through their food

stamps and other agencies, but what is missing from their diet is the meat, said Tanveer Mirza, president of FAITH Social Services. The Islamic Relief partnership is very beneficial for FAITH clients since they are able to access very high quality meat which the clients really look forward to every year.” Besides the Qurbani distribution FAITH has robust food programs which include a year round food pantry and an annual food distribution during Ramadan which provides a month’s supply of food.

ISB Bolsters Security with $74K Government Grant By Muslim Link Staff

jihad’. Their main objection is that tax payer’s money is being used to keep Muslim schools and religious centers— tax exempt organizations—safe from attacks. ISB has been a recipient since 2005.

In the month of October, the Islamic Society of Baltimore (ISB) received a $74,675 grant from the Nonprofit Security Grant Program (NGSP) run by Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA). The grant will be used towards upgrading, enhancing and adding to ISB’s security infrastructure, according to the official letter sent by ISB President Mohammed Abdul Khadeer.

Only a handful of Muslim organizations have received this grant. According to the Forward, a Jewish daily, Jewish institutions throughout the United States received $9.7 million in federal antiterrorism grants out of a total of $10 million in 2012, approximately 97% of the total budget. Other recipients included Catholic churches and a Planned Parenthood center.

In place since 2005, the grant is a part of Department of Homeland Security’s Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI). To be eligible a nonprofit organization must be, “determined by the Secretary of Homeland Security to be at high risk of terrorist attack due to their ideology, beliefs, or mission.” For fiscal year 2014, $13,000,000 was allocated for the NGSP. Muslim Link spoke with Faisel Maniar who sits on ISB’s Grants Committee with Mohsin Majid and Attaulla Khan as members and Abid Husain as the chair. When the notification for the FEMA

grant was announced, the committee wasted no time and developed the winning proposal. The committee also benefited with inputs from Rehan Alavi, former ISB Council member.

The news of ISB’s 2014 receiving the grant was blogged out on several antiMuslim websites, which often spew hate rhetoric about Muslims and keep regurgitating fear tactics about ‘stealth

Hate Online: CAIR Launches Islamophobia.org "Because of the avalanche of negative comments about Islam and Muslims that we see in our daily lives, any initiative that offers a positive and accurate portrayal of ordinary Muslims ... can have a positive impact,” said Ibrahim Hooper, national communications director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). His group launched website Islamophobia.org on October 15, 2014 which seeks to expose U.S.-based Islamophobic groups. “Unfortunately we are seeing a tremendous spike in anti-Muslim rhetoric,",” Hooper said. “I think that the recent phenomenon can almost exclusively be tied to the ISIS issue,” he added using an alternative acronym for the extremist Islamic State and the Levant. There are sections on the website to submit tips, downloadable reports on Islamopobia. profiles of known Islamophobes, and resources such as

anti-prejudice tools. According to the Islamophobia.org, when CAIR identifies a group or individual as employing Islamophobia, CAIR researchers review the actions and rhetoric of the entity. Based on the results of this review the entity is entered into the American Islamophobe database and assigned to one of three categories: Inner Core: Groups or individuals whose primary purpose is to promote prejudice against or hatred of Islam and Muslims and whose work regularly demonstrates Islamophobic themes. Outer Core: Groups or individuals whose primary purpose does not appear to include promoting prejudice against or hatred of Islam and Muslims but whose work regularly demonstrates or supports Islamophobic themes. Of Concern: Groups or individuals who have used Islamophobic themes

or supported Islamophobia in America, but whose work does not regularly demonstrate or support Islamophobic themes. CAIR monitors but generally does not further report on groups placed in this category. Well known organizations such as ACT! for America and the Clarion Fund are listed alongside lesser known organizations such as The Lynde and Harry Bradley Foundation and MEMRI. As explained on the website, CAIR believes Islamophobia in the United States is a current manifestation of the issue of prejudice that has plagued the United States since its earliest days: “It is the same old hate, just with a relatively new target. Muslims, like Malcolm X, have been involved in historical U.S. movements combating prejudice, but only after the 9/11 terror attacks did they become a primary focus for purveyors

of hate. With this in mind, CAIR is dedicated to countering prejudice in general.” While recognizing that Muslims are a primary focus of hate today, CAIR believes that this will one day pass to another group. “We continue to work to ensure social and legal protections for all Americans, inspired by the sacrifices and ongoing struggles of African American Muslims and Christians as well as other minorities who have been marginalized including Japanese Americans, Jews, Catholics and others.” While this site calls attention to the groups and individuals promoting Islamophobia in the United States, CAIR hopes users will find the materials developed to counter prejudice in general, not just against Muslims.

Rise in Abused Children Prompts New FAITH Program By Saman Qureishi

Muslim Link Contributing Writer On October 11, 2014, the Foundation for Appropriate and Temporary Help (FAITH) organized the first ever Fashion with Compassion, a modest fashion show to raise money for victims of domestic violence. More than 300 people came out to attend the evening of fashion and beauty. With the help of our gold and platinum sponsors FAITH was able to raise $13,000. The money that comes into our Safe and Peaceful Families Program helps families like the that of 12-year old Sayeed. Sayeed was only 4 years old when he came to FAITH Social Services. A bright and loving boy who was academically talented and from a young age had been part of the gifted and talented program at school. Sayeed’s father used to beat him and he had been the victim of severe physical and emotional abuse. When his parents separated, Sayeed, his younger brother and mother had to live in a county women’s shelter. After an emotionally difficult time at the shelter, Sayeed’s

In the past year, FAITH has worked with 76 men and women victims and 103 child victims who witnessed or/and were abused in their homes. The number of domestic violence victims is growing each year. A national leading victim assistance organization, Safe Horizons, has found that without help with their trauma, girls who witness domestic violence are more

vulnerable to abuse as teens and adults. Alternately, boys who witness domestic violence are more likely to become abusers of their partners and/or children as adults, thus continuing the cycle of violence into the next generation. “If Muslims in America don’t take this reality seriously then the men will be in jail, the youth will be in detention centers and the Masajids will be empty,” said a leading activist who works with victims of domestic violence. Sayeed is now 12 years old; his grades

have steadily declined and he feels like a social pariah in the gifted program. Currently, Sayeed is being closely watched because he is at high risk of suicide due to his emotional state. A domestic violence case worker with over 10 years of experience said what is happening to Sayeed is not uncommon for children who come from domestic abuse households. “We have seen some children of our clients who steal from stores, dropped out of school, became tyrants themselves, turned away from their faith, and tried to kill themselves, because they were left alone with a parent who could not be there emotionally for them.” FAITH is currently trying to help Sayeed by providing him a counselor to work through his feelings. Additionally, FAITH is expanding its Children’s program to include the Bright Stars Program. This was created as a direct result of the increased numbers of abused

IMAAM purchased the two-level, 11,300 square foot church located at 9100 Georgia Avenue in June of this year with a grant from the Indonesian government, approved by President Dr. H. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who attended the grand opening along with his wife and the presidential delegation. The remodeled church includes a large prayer area and smaller assembly rooms. The grand opening ceremony included juma' prayer led by founding IMAAM member Firdaus Kadir. President Yudhoyono led his delegation in 'Asr prayer immediately afterward; the group traveled overnight from New York where President Yudhoyono was attending the United Nations gathering of world leaders. IMAAM invited representatives from area Muslim organizations. Some area leaders and activists in attendance included All Dulles Area Muslims Association (ADAMS) President Syed Moktadir, ADAMS Board of Trustees Chairman Rizwan Jaka, Dr. Iqbal Yunus from the Fairfax Institute, Imam of the Islamic Society of the Washington Area (ISWA) Faizul Khan, and Sister Asma Hanif, director of the Muslimat An-Nisaa women's shelter. Numerous diplomats from Muslim countries as well as local interfaith leaders also attended. As is typical with a visit from a head of state, the invitation only event had tight security which included a large presence from the Montgomery County Police Department as well as federal agents. The ceremony began about an hour before juma' prayer with lunch served to all guests. A live translation was available to guests via wireless headsets. After a recitation from the Qur'an, IMAAM President Arif Mustofa thanked Allah and President Yudhoyono for allowing the organization to reach this day. He said the strategic location of the new center – close to Washington DC and Northern Virginia and to the metro system – would allow Muslims and guests from around the region to participate in the activities at IMAAM. "The doors of goodness will be wide open to those who want peace," said Mustofa.

....

US Department of State's Special Representative to Muslim Communities Shaarik Zafar spoke next, congratulating the IMAAM community on the realization of their dream. "The Muslim community is an integral part of America. What can we do to make an impact? Engagement," said Zafar. He also took the opportunity to comment on the Indonesian President's recent speech regarding how to deal with the threat of terrorism and extremism. "We fully agree with your speech about using soft power to confront extremist groups like ISIL," said Zafar, adding that stopping the flow of foreign fighters to Syria and Iraq was critical. President Yudhoyono's address began with praising and thanking Allah for this day, and sending salutations on the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), his companions, and the Muslim ummah. Saying the world was losing compassion and peace, the outgoing President prayed that the IMAAM center would be "a house of Allah and a house of peace, love, and tolerance." He repeated "peace, love, and tolerance" in English several times throughout his speech. The Muslim ummah should be known as the community of "peace, love, and tolerance" because it "has everything [it] needs in the Qur'an and Hadith, and Islam is nothing but a blessing to all humanity, 'rahmatul-lil-'alameen'." The Prophet (peace be upon him) was able to unite different cultures, so "we want to show that we foster 'ukhuwwah' [brotherhood] among all [people]," said President Yodhoyono. In an implicit message to President Obama on America's military interventions across the Muslim world, the Indonesia President said "Islam asks us to uphold what is right and to fight 'munkar' [wrong doing], but you cannot fight munkar with munkar." Saying killings and suicide bombings in the Middle East have smeared the name of Islam and caused "America to be suspicious of [Muslims]," President Yodhoyono appealed to extremists to "come back to the right path." On the need for Muslims to educate their children about Islam, President Yodhoyono said "Islam is the most misunderstood religion in the world, and the most misunderstood by Muslims." "How can we reduce the level of animosity here? There must be other solutions other than military solutions. We ask Allah

(Photos courtesy of IMAAM) to help us find the permanent solutions [to the world crisis], the soft power, and the smart power. We must stop [military solutions] from happening before the world regrets it. There must be a paradigm shift in the West and in the way Muslims see the West ... this is my desire that IMAAM center becomes part of that goal," said President Adhoyono to applause. "IMAAM must be an open space for friendships ... and inclusiveness, be the House of Allah, the community that upholds peace, love, and tolerance." The ceremony closed with a dua from IMAAM center Imam Fahmi Zubair and then the Muslim guests proceeded to the masjid area for juma' prayer. The topic of the khutbah was pluralism and Islam. Over the years, IMAAM partnered with local service and advocacy organizations

like the DC Central Kitchen, the Arab Muslim Sikh Advisory Council, the Interfaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington, and the Asian American Health Institute. Every year, IMAAM also participates in the City of Rockville's Food Basket Program. IMAAM's board is keen on making sure the center is for all area Muslims, not just Indonesian-Americans. "I'm not Indonesian, but I just jumped in [to help start this masjid]. They are very nice people, and we really needed [a masjid] in this area," said Abdulmalik Shifa, an immigrant from Ethiopia who was volunteering during the grand opening. A counselor for the 140 acre youth training center Our House in Brookeville, MD, headed by Benny Richards, Jose cleared the land himself, initially as a way to rid the youth home property of invasive weeds, as mandated by the Maryland weed control program. The MSLYS farm, named after the first initials of his family, started in 2010. Jose scraped money together and acquired goats, lambs, chickens, ducks, and rabbits. Goatscaping is an environmentally friendly way of clearing up land, not to mention a Sunnah. Goats can clear vegetation from hard-to-reach places, and ‘they'll eat the seeds that pesticides and mowing leave behind, preventing vegetation from coming back next year’, and can help keep herbicides out of area land and waterways. “The lambs really like pine bark, this area is good grazing for them, goat eat the foliage above and lambs graze low,” he shares. In assessing the security risk, Maniar says that there is always risk, as ISB is one of the largest Muslim congregations in the Maryland area. More than 900 students attend the Al-Rahmah School, Nursery, Sunday School, Hifz School, Seminary and other weekend and afterschool programs. Currently, ISB serves more than 2000 worshippers every Friday. groups of vendors set up tables this year: Non-food vendors, 6 food vendors and community organizations. Any community organization could set up a stall for free and ICNA provided them with two admission tickets, a table and a chair, to showcase their work. Twenty community organization availed the opportunity. ICNA hopes this number will increase next year.

‘Proper planning and preparedness are the keys to surviving a disaster,’ according to MEMA. ISB hosts several interfaith, intercommunity activities and is cooperative with law enforcement. “We don’t want to doubt anyone, but keeping our doors open for anyone to come and worship adds a risk factor,” said Maniar. He quoted several instances of objects thrown in to the masjid premises. One particular instance stands out where a pickup truck came into the campus towards the main building entrance late at night and honked for a prolonged time and then sped off. With the new surveillance system, any car that comes into the premises can be tracked. A major part of grant will be used for installing fencing, cameras, card readers, gate access control equipment and other security equipment.

Higher definition security cameras will be installed across the campus, recording footage backed up on servers. “With this [grant] we are improving the cameras, [installing] them in wooded areas and implementing controlled access in secure zones within the campus” says Maniar. According to Maniar, the current ISB Council with inputs from directors of the institutions at ISB is conducting a Facilities Risk Evaluation and plans on implementing a Security Master Plan for the campus. explored "The Leadership Pipeline in American Muslim Organization" in a well put presentation. Husain felt that it was necessary to research why people leave and why people stay in leadership roles for future generations. The project hoped to spot commonalities and trends, which could be used for best-practices. He examined links between parental involvement, Sunday school, and volunteering in the making of todays’ DMV Muslim youth leaders. He interviewed three male youth leaders who are now attending college. “We have to start early and often with our childrens’ daily salah or with parents being active in Islamic mentorship,” presented Husain. Trends emerged in his research suggesting regular activity and interaction at the masjid (by way of parents) led to more responsibility being shouldered as individuals progressed. Husain said that he wasn’t able to make scientific conclusions based on his research. An expert on the panel said that Husain may want to factor out bias in his research as the ethnic background of all three of his case studies was similar, and all three subjects came from a large

Muslim community. Adib Ahmad, advised by Yusuf Khan researched "Re-Branding Islamic Services”. Issues brought up with marketing Islamic events included posters with spelling errors, boring presenters, and the quality of venues. Ahmad stressed that his research is not about solving problems, but improving existing services. He designed two surveys and collected data on the Let’s Read event that he helps organizes. He hopes to use the results of his research to better allocate resources for next year’s event. Ahmad discovered that the amount of time spent designing posters was not the best use of resources, as flyers were considered ‘outdated’. Word of mouth and personally going to the masjid introduced more people to the event then an anonymous poster, followed by a strong social media presence. After his project, he recommended that event organizers not focus improving one area, rather aim to slightly improve each aspect of their service. According to his research, location and venue size should be of the highest concern for community events such as Let’s Read and key volunteers, such as the MC, should be engaging and professional, if possible. He also concluded that constantly engaging registered participants pre-event results

Nassar advised future MyStI Interns to pick a topic that they are really passionate about and to be conscious of the time commitment.

Dr Zahra Ahmed questioned the premise of Ahmad’s research project and others in the audience asked for definitions as the title of the project made the audience members think that Ahmad would show them how Islamic events were successfully or unsuccessfully branded and how to rebrand them.

Small sample size was the largest challenge for all the researchers. Although Nassar had 38 students 12 parent responses, she said that some youth were scared that she would be able match their responses to their names, and others didn’t respond. Husain from the ISB community was only able to interview 3 student leaders for his project; veteran researchers recommend that at least 30 different perspectives be included to have a good sample size, he said.

A confident, 17 year old high school senior, Doha Nassar, was advised by Dr. Mohammed Eltoweissy and Farid Ahmed on her research project, "The Muslim Youth Identity Crisis". She writes that the internship provided her with the opportunity to explore a topic that she is passionate about. Nassar asked questions, such as whether the students changed their names in school or were embarrassed to be seen in public as a Muslim. To remove biases she also reached out to the youth who are not involved with masajid or with the Muslim community. She concluded that parents do have an impact on their child’s identity and achievement and that there is not a correlation between achievement and identity.

youth and noted that the older kids were reserved and did not participate to their full potential. “These children have often been neglected and their personal value and opinion is diminished in the face of an aggressor. Our program will include life skills, confidence building and empowerment techniques while also providing the youth with consistent attention. The Bright Stars Program is an investment into their future as well as the future of our Ummah,” said the coordinator. Domestic Violence has society wide implications and affects men, women, children, families and our Muslim Ummah.

Students have the option of continuing their work next year. Then who? Your mother? Excellent, you're on the right track. Okay, then what else? Your parents? Your spouse? Children? Wealth? Health? That all makes sense because Allah Subhanahu wa ta'alaa mentions them all many times in different surahs: Al Kahf, Al Baqarah, An-Nisa, and Al Isra to name a few. But none of these things can keep you alive except one thing that Alla azza wa jal created, and from which He made every living thing: water. Because the southwest has geographically been mostly arid or semi-arid, water rights in Colorado are unique compared to other parts of the country. There's this thing called the “prior appropriation doctrine” which basically says that whoever made use of a water source first has the first right to it, and that person's or entity's rights to a cup of agua must be satisfied before anyone else can grab a sip. Add to that the fact that back in 1948 Colorado and Kansas made some wacky pact that, in a nutshell, said 40% of the water flowing down the Arkansas River belongs to Kansas. Yeah. Kansas. Heck, up until about 5 years ago Coloradoans legally couldn't even bypass the whole Kansas- water thing and catch rainwater from their own roofs. Back in1901 Kansas had a hissy fit about Colorado using Arkansas River water on land that wasn't along the river's banks. So they got into it and Colorado goes, “Oh please! We have first dibs to divert it wherever we want.” And Kansas says, “Really?”, and kept filing all these lawsuits for decades. So they took it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and the justices are sitting there all sweaty and annoyed in their black robes listening to Kansas whining and dying, 'til they're like “Ohmygodstopalready! You haven't proved you're being dissed so get over it!” So Colorado was told to play nice with Kansas, and share with Oklahoma and Arkansas, too, and they all signed the Kansas-Oklahoma-Colorado River Basin Compact in 1965. Fairly happy ending.

Just about everybody out here (except us, for now) owns some type of 4x4 truck. Dodge, Chevy, Ford. Basic cowboy wheels. And in the back of that truck is a 300- or 400-gallon tank for water. You take your truck down to the water station in town, hook it up to the heavy-duty hose and fill 'er up for 1¢ per gallon. So, how do Coloradoans grab their share before it flows into Kansas? Three ways, actually. First, if you live within the city limits you just turn on that shiny faucet and out splashes Allah's bounty. Then, if you happen to have, oh say, $8,000 under your mattress and suitable land outside the city limits, you can have your very own well dug. Mind you, not every piece of country land has water running under it. The only way you're gonna know for sure is to cough up another $1,000 or so to have a well engineer bring out his fancy gadgets and maps to tell you if there's a fair-to-middlin', strong indication, good, or just flat out no-chance of water. Basically, it's about a $10,000 gamble because no water, no refund.

Lastly, you could do what we and most of our neighbors do: u-haul. As in you haul your own water. No, not with a moving van, silly. See, just about everybody out here (except us, for now) owns some type of 4x4 truck. Dodge, Chevy, Ford. Basic cowboy wheels. And in the back of that truck is a 300- or 400-gallon tank for water. You take your truck down to the water station in town, hook it up to the heavy-duty hose and fill 'er up for 1¢ per gallon. Yes, you read that right. A penny a gallon. Alhamdulillah, what a ni'mah.

How One Man Refused to Spy on Fellow Muslims for the FBI—and Then Lost Everything Arun Kundnani, Emily Keppler and Muki Najaer The Nation | October 14, 2014

While awaiting trial, Abdul-Alim discovered that his wife received cash payments from the FBI totaling at least $11,949. for the FBI.

On the night of December 9, 2011, Siham Stewart called her husband, Ayyub Abdul-Alim, as he closed down his corner store, Nature’s Garden, in Springfield, Massachusetts. She asked him to bring home a gallon of milk. A few minutes later, she watched from the window of their second-floor apartment as he was seized in the street and handcuffed by two police officers. Forty-eight hours after Abdul-Alim’s arrest, FBI agent James Hisgen and Springfield police officer Ronald Sheehan offered him the chance to walk away free of charges if he agreed to become an informant on the Muslim community. He refused the deal and is now held at the Cedar Junction maximum-security prison in Massachusetts, facing up to sixteen years behind bars. While awaiting trial, Abdul-Alim discovered that his wife received cash payments from the FBI totaling at least $11,949. The receipts were signed by Sheehan and Hisgen. Stewart testified against Abdul-Alim in court and admitted to working as an informant. This past April, Abdul-Alim was found guilty of illegal possession of a firearm that he alleges the officers planted on him as part of their attempt to pressure him to work

....

Abdul-Alim, 36, grew up in New York City in a family of African-American and Puerto Rican heritage. Prior to his arrest, he founded and ran the Quran and Sunnah Community Center in Springfield, which offered free meals and prayer services, and Connections Transportation, which transported people to visit their loved ones in prison. He was also a small business

In early 2011, Hisgen showed up at AbdulAlim’s mosque, Masjid Al Tawheed, with two other agents. According to the Imam, Dr. Ishmael Ali, Hisgen claimed he was from the Springfield Building Department and demanded to search the mosque. Dr. Ali turned him away because he did not have a warrant. Dr. Ali recalled that in the two years leading up to his arrest, AbdulAlim continually sought advice on how to get the FBI agents to leave him alone.

Today, black Muslims stand at the intersection of the War on Drugs’ institutional racism and the War on Terror’s institutional Islamophobia: their race frames them as prone to gang violence, their religion as a terrorist threat. owner, an apartment complex manager, a husband, and a father figure to Stewart’s son. His life began to change in 2010 after he returned from a three-week religious trip to Mecca. Abdul-Alim reports that he began to receive calls from James Hisgen, an agent at the FBI’s Springfield field office, who asked him questions such as, “Do you love America?” and told him to call back if he was interested in working as an informant.

Since 9/11, a key element in the FBI’s counter-terrorism tactics has been the aggressive recruitment and deployment of large numbers of informants among Muslim communities in the United States. Part of the purpose is to gather information on political or community activism, which the FBI frames as a precursor to extremist violence. But the tactics also fit a familiar pattern—one that harkens back to the FBI’s history of targeting the civil rights and Black Power movements of the 1960s, when

it was likewise asserted that extremist ideologues were fueling violence. At that time, FBI agents were each expected to hire at least one informant to report on the goings-on of black people. African-Americans were watched by FBI informants everywhere they congregated [1]: churches, bookstores, bars, restaurants, college classrooms and other gathering spots. In addition to providing information on activist leaders, the informants served as “listening posts” for blanket information on black communities. The FBI believed that the civil rights movement was a front for Communist subversion and that the urban rebellions of black youth were instigated by Communist agitators. Systematic spying, it was thought, would help prevent riots but ultimately the purpose was to disable the growing radicalism of black America. Black Muslims—branded the “extremists” of the day—were seen as especially politicized, and prominent community figures such as Muhammad Ali and Malcolm X were placed on NSA and FBI watch lists. Nation of Islam leader Elijah Muhammad had been on the FBI’s radar since World War II; in 1942, agents had arrested [2] him on charges of draft evasion. The best-known FBI initiative directed at the black liberation movement was COINTELPRO—short for Counterintelligence Program. It was launched in 1956 to infiltrate the Communist Party but shortly afterwards was expanded to include the ongoing surveillance of black activists. Disinformation campaigns, arrests on trumped-up charges, faked evidence, and assassinations were used to “expose, >> fbi Pg 29

Egypt’s U.S-Backed Military Regime Is Brutalizing Student Protestors By Murtaza Hussain

Predictably, these measures have led to outrage among students – and equally as predictable, their protests have been met with harsh retribution from the military regime.

The Intercept, October 16, 2014 Just a few short months after John Kerry disingenuously congratulated Egypt’s military junta for “transitioning to democracy”, the young students who helped galvanize the 2011 Egyptian Revolution are back protesting its increasingly draconian rule. Campus protests have broken out in several major cities calling for the release of imprisoned student activists and for the removal of new limits on academic freedom imposed by the regime. As part of wide-ranging campaign to stifle popular dissent, the government of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has recently given itself broad powers to directly appoint university heads, dismiss faculty without the possibility of appeal, and force students to sign documents promising “not to participate in political activities” in their housing applications. Private security firms have also been hired to enforce order on campus and monitor activists.

According to Human Rights Watch, more than 100 students have been detained since the start of the school year on October 11th. Video shot by student activists has shown images of protestors teargassed and brutalized by batonwielding riot police.

In the face of an escalating campaign of repression by the Sisi regime – including a Tiananmen Square-scale massacre of protestors, arbitrary detention, extrajudicial killings and torture – the American government has seemingly doubled down on its support for him.

Despite this, the Obama administration has remained steadfast in its support of the Egyptian government. Denmark Tries a Soft-Handed Approach to Returned Islamist Fighters By Anthony Faiola and Souad Mekhennet The Washington Post, October 19, 2014

AARHUS, Denmark — The rush of morning shoppers parted to make way for Talha, a lanky 21-year-old in desert camouflage and a long, religious beard. He strode through the local mall with a fighter’s gait picked up on the battlefields of Syria. Streams of young Muslim men greeted him like a returning king. As-salamu alaykum. Wa alaikum assalaam. In other countries, Talha — one of hundreds of young jihadists from the

West who has fought in Syria and Iraq — might be barred from return or thrown in jail. But in Denmark, a country that has spawned more foreign fighters per capita than almost anywhere else, the port city of Aarhus is taking a novel approach by rolling out a welcome mat.

In Denmark, not one returned fighter has been locked up. Instead, taking the view that discrimination at home is as criminal as Islamic State recruiting, officials here are providing free psychological counseling while finding returnees jobs and spots in schools and universities. Officials credit a new effort to reach out

to a radical mosque with stanching the flow of recruits. Some progressives say Aarhus should become a model for other communities in the United States and Europe that are trying to cope with the question of what to do when the jihad generation comes back to town. For better or worse, this city’s answer has left the likes of Talha wandering freely on the streets. The son of moderate Muslim immigrants from the Middle East, he became radicalized and fought with an Islamist brigade in Syria for nine months before returning home last October. Back

Special to CNN, October 14, 2014

Editor's note: Theresa Corbin is a writer living in New Orleans. She is the founder of Islamwich and a contributor to On Islam and Aquila Style. A version of this piece first appeared on CNN iReport. (CNN) -- I am a Muslim, but I wasn't always. I converted to Islam in November 2001, two months after 9/11. I was 21 and living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It was a bad time to be a Muslim. But after four years of studying, poking and prodding at world religions and their adherents, I decided to take the plunge. Questions and answers I am the product of a Creole Catholic and an Irish atheist. I grew up Catholic, then was agnostic, now I'm Muslim. My journey to Islam began when I was about 15 years old in Mass and had questions about my faith. The answers

would do: the opposite. I worried about it. For many years. I questioned the nature of religion, man and the universe. After questioning everything I was taught to be true and digging through rhetoric, history and dogma, I found out about this strange thing called Islam. I learned that Islam is neither a culture nor a cult, nor could it be represented by one part of the world. I came to realize Islam is a world religion that teaches tolerance, justice and honor and promotes patience, modesty and balance. As I studied the faith, I was surprised many of the tenants resonated with me. I was pleased to find that Islam teaches its adherents to honor all prophets, from Moses to Jesus to Mohammed, all of whom taught mankind to worship one God and to conduct ourselves with higher purpose. I was drawn to Islam's appeal to intellect and heartened by the prophet Mohammed's quote, "The acquisition of knowledge is compulsory for every Muslim, whether male or female." I was astounded that science and rationality

Here was a religion telling me to seek out answers and use my intellect to question the world around me.

It was 2001, and I had been putting off converting for a while. I feared what people would think but was utterly miserable. When 9/11 happened, the actions of the hijackers horrified me. But in its aftermath, I spent most of my time defending Muslims and their religion to people who were all too eager to paint a

Studying Islam didn't immediately dispel all my cultural misconceptions. I had been raised on imagery of women in the East being treated like chattel by men who forced them to cover their bodies out of shame or a sense of ownership. But when I asked a Muslim woman "Why do you wear that?", her answer was obvious and appealing: "To please God. To be recognized as a woman who is to be respected and not harassed. So that I

I was done being held hostage by the opinions of others. In defending Islam, I got over my fear and decided to join my brothers and sisters in the faith I believed in. My family did not understand, but it wasn't a surprise to them since I had been studying religion. Most were very concerned for my safety. She explained how dressing modestly is a symbol to the world that a woman's body is not meant for mass consumption or critique. I still wasn't convinced and replied, "Yeah, but women are like second class citizens in your faith?" The very patient Muslim lady explained that, during a time when the Western world treated women like property, Islam taught that men and women were equal in the eyes of God. on Danish soil, he still dreams of one day living in a Middle Eastern caliphate. He rejects the Islamic State’s beheading of foreign hostages but defends its summary executions of Iraqi and Syrian soldiers. “I know how some people think. They are afraid of us, the ones coming back,” says Talha, a name he adopted to protect his identity because he never told his father he went to fight. “Look, we are really not dangerous.” Yet critics call this city’s soft-handed approach just that — dangerous. And the effort here is fast becoming a pawn in the much larger debate raging across Europe over Islam and the nature of extremism. More and louder voices here are clamoring for new laws that could not only charge returnees with treason but also set curbs on immigration from Muslim countries and on Islamic traditions such as religious circumcision. In a country that vividly remembers the violent backlash in the Muslim world after a Danish newspaper published cartoon images of the prophet Muhammad in 2006, many here want Aarhus to crack down on — not cajole — extremists. “They are being much too soft [in Aarhus], and they fail to see the problem,” said Marie Krarup, an influential member of Parliament from the Danish People’s Party, the country’s third-largest political force. “The problem is Islam. Islam itself is radical. You cannot integrate a great number of Muslims into a Christian country.” Perfect breeding ground Aarhus is treating its returning religious fighters like wayward youths rather than terrorism suspects because that’s the way most of them started out. The majority were young men like Talha, between 16 and 28, including several former criminals and gang members who had recently found what they began to call “true Islam.” Most of them came from moderate Muslim homes and, quite often, were the children of divorced parents. And most lived in the Gellerupparken ghetto.

....

A densely packed warren of mid-rise public housing blocks, Gellerupparken is home to immigrants and their families who arrived in the waves of Muslim migration that began in the 1960s. Unemployment — especially among youths — is far higher than the city average. At one point, crime was so bad that even ambulances needed police escorts. It made a perfect breeding ground for angry young men at risk of becoming militants. On a quest to change that, the city is in the

watched YouTube videos of civilian killings committed by the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. “I could not just sit in the comfort of Denmark while thousands and thousands of my brothers were dying,” he said. He began discussing his feelings with other religious friends, and within a few months, a plan was hatched.

Yet, because counseling is voluntary, he has opted to skip the therapy sessions he says he doesn’t need. He wants no harm to come to Denmark, he said, but bemoans what he describes as a mounting anti-Islamic sentiment in the media and national government.

On the day he left for Syria, in October 2012, he told his divorced parents that he and a friend were going to Turkey on vacation. Instead, his friend’s cousin had

They also met with members of the mosque’s youth group to dissuade other young Muslims from traveling to the Middle East. midst of a major overhaul of the ghetto. Better housing could improve conditions and lure more ethnic Danes, contributing to integration. New thoroughfares and roads, meanwhile, would link it more closely to the rest of the city. “These are young people who have turned to religion at a very difficult time in their lives, and they are dealing with existential questions about going to fight for what they believe in,” said Aarhus Mayor Jacob Bundsgaard. “We cannot pass legislation that changes the way they think and feel. What we can do is show them we are sincere about integration, about dialogue.” ‘It’s home’ “It doesn’t feel strange, being back,” said Talha, as he passed an organic juice stand at a local mall. Four blond Danish girls eye him warily. He is well known here, a heroic figure among his Muslim peers, many of whom know he fought in Syria and greet him with hand on heart and a respectful nod. “It’s home.” He was born in Denmark, to an immigrant family that hailed from a nation bordering Syria. To maintain his privacy, he declined to publicly state which one. The urge to go and fight, he said, built like a slow burn. For months, he had

arranged their passage across the border to Syria. He worked in a refugee camp for a few weeks before getting attached to an independent battalion associated with Ahrar al-Sham, a group with alleged ties to al-Qaeda. During the months when he manned heavy-artillery batteries near Aleppo, he said, his outfit also maintained harmonious ties with the Islamic State. “You cannot believe everything you hear about the Islamic State,” Talha said. “There may be bad things, but also good things.” He returned to Denmark for a few months in 2013, telling his mother — but not his father — what he had done. Since his own religious awakening, he had persuaded her to start wearing a head scarf, and she became more religious herself. But “she cried when I told her where I had been,” he said. When he returned to Syria a few months later, she did not try to stop him. Talha came back to Denmark last October, when bouts of infighting broke out among rival factions. Since then, he has had one meeting, he said, with a police official who questioned him about his plans and intentions. Under Aarhus’s program, he was offered — and accepted — taxpayers’ help for the math classes he needs to enter engineering school.

“I don’t see how that helps,” he said.

Danish authorities say the vast majority of the 30 or so Aarhus residents who went to Syria were somehow linked to one of the most polarizing houses of worship in Europe — the Grimhojvej mosque. Talha began to worship there four years ago, two years before he left for Syria. He found the mosque through a childhood friend who helped him leave behind what he described as a world of secular vice. Parties with Danish teens. Drinking. Girls. “That’s my past,” he said. “Not my present.” But Talha wants to make one thing clear. He, like the mosque leadership, denies that Grimhojvej recruited him and other fighters. “These are good men,” he said with a smile. Others disagree. The mosque opened in 2008 and, in recent years, absorbed the congregation of a nearby mosque that closed and where several men had been previously detained on terrorism charges. One of its current imams is under investigation in Germany for inciting hate during a visit to Berlin in July. From 2008 to 2013, another imam — Abdessamad Fateh, a 46-year-old Moroccan immigrant also known as Abu Hamza — preached at Grimhojvej. After spending five months in Syria, he is back in Aarhus. According to Arab intelligence officials, he recruited Westerners — including a young Danish convert to Islam — to fight in Syria and Iraq. This month, Fateh was added to the U.S. list of suspected terrorists thought to have ties to al-Qaeda. Inside the converted ice factory that houses Grimhojvej, Oussama el-Saadi, the mosque’s chairman, dismissed the

disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize” black movements, according to the FBI’s own documents. But COINTELPRO was just one initiative within the FBI’s wider surveillance and criminalization of black organizations. Abdul-Alim’s parents were themselves caught up in these longer histories of FBI surveillance. His father was active with the Black Panther Party in New York and his mother was a member of the Young Lords, the radical Puerto Rican youth group that was, like the Panthers, targeted [3] by the FBI. Both parents were involved in the Mosque of the Islamic Brotherhood, a Harlem-based Muslim congregation founded by an associate of Malcolm X and whose attendees have faced decades of surveillance. Today, black Muslims stand at the intersection of the War on Drugs’ institutional racism and the War on Terror’s institutional Islamophobia: their race frames them as prone to gang violence, their religion as a terrorist threat. Abdul-Alim’s case shows the extreme measures the FBI is willing to use to pressure Muslims to work as informants on the terror war’s domestic front. On the night of his arrest, Sheehan instructed two Springfield Police officers to stop Abdul-Alim as he approached a store. According to a police radio transcript, the officers pat-frisked AbdulAlim and told Sheehan that he was clear of any weapons. Sheehan ordered them to conduct a second search and, according to one transcript, they again responded that Abdul-Alim did not have any weapons. Sheehan asked over the police radio, “Is the subject in earshot?” and then asked one of the officers, Angel Berrios, to step away. This is where the record ends. Abdul-Alim alleges that Berrios then pushed him against the police car, pulled down his pants and boxers, probed his [private area], spread his buttocks and yelled out, “Gun!” The officers handcuffed Abdul-Alim and placed him in a police cruiser. Abdul-Alim alleges that Sheehan then approached the vehicle and asked, “Are you ready to make the deal of a lifetime?” When Abdul-Alim protested, he was told to “think it over” on his way to the police station.

“They said that I was facing ten years, but I could walk away right now if I agreed to be an informant,” recalls Abdul-Alim. Sheehan, who is also a member of the Springfield Joint Terrorism Task Force, immediately called his FBI supervisor to notify him of the arrest. Forty-eight hours after the arrest, it became apparent what the “deal of a lifetime” would involve. As Abdul-Alim awaited arraignment at the Springfield police station, Sheehan and Hisgen questioned him for about an hour. AbdulAlim recalls Hisgen saying, “You may remember I called you about a year ago requesting a meeting to discuss possible information you may have that could be

to give people.” Hisgen and Sheehan did not record the interrogation. Abdul-Alim refused the deal and was held at the Hampden County Correctional Center for two and a half years awaiting trial. In December 2013, the prosecution introduced a new set of charges. Police officers claimed that, shortly after AbdulAlim’s arrest, they had conducted a search of the apartment complex he managed and discovered a bag of guns in an empty suite. “They supposedly sat on this information for two years, which is definitely very unusual,” said Abdul-Alim’s public defense attorney, Thomas Robinson.

In the Cold War, black Muslims were seen as constituting a radical threat of subversion; in the War on Terror, the combination of their race and religion makes them easy prey for sting operations, which, on closer inspection, look more like entrapments. helpful, but you refused to meet with me. Maybe you’ll be more willing to cooperate now.” At this point, Abdul-Alim recognized Hisgen as the same man who had called him for months and attempted to search his mosque. He recounted these events to The Nation from behind a plexiglass barrier in Hampton County Jail. Abdul-Alim, who had been convicted of dealing cocaine in 2003, assumed the interrogation regarded drugs or gangs. Hisgen allegedly said, “I’m not interested in that nickel and dime [expletive]. I want the real [expletive]. Like terrorism [expletive].” “They said that I was facing ten years, but I could walk away right now if I agreed to be an informant,” recalls Abdul-Alim. “They said that they would give me the names of specific people who they wanted me to target, and I would use antigovernment propaganda to incite them to violent action. They implied that they would provide me with guns and bombs

In April 2014, a four-day trial began on the original gun charges but it was riddled with inconsistencies. The officers could not agree on simple details, including how many times they searched Abdul-Alim, or the location and time that they allegedly found the gun. The gun was originally described by police and a ballistic expert as a .22 revolver but later identified in court as a .25 semi-automatic pistol manufactured in 1908. A police forensics analysis conducted three days after the arrest found that there were no fingerprints on the gun. In contradiction to police procedure, the arresting officers failed to retrieve surveillance videos of the arrest scene, wear gloves while handling the weapon, or write a complete police report. In Court, Siham Stewart testified as an informant saying she had been paid by the police and the FBI but denied that the payments were related to Abdul-Alim. She said that, whenever she was short on rent

money, she would call “Ron,” referring to Officer Sheehan, and he would pay her in cash. Abdul-Alim says that Stewart convinced him to sign his bank accounts and store over to her while he was in jail. She sold the store, took his money, and left. “When I saw her in court after I found out that she was an informant,” said AbdulAlim, “she just smiled at me like this was all some kind of game. I realized I had lost my store, my savings, and my wife. Everything.” Before she met Abdul-Alim, Stewart and other members of her family were in the process of applying for US citizenship, which may have given the government an opportunity to pressure her into working for the FBI. The prosecution presented the case against Abdul-Alim as a straightforward gun charge. The presiding judge, Constance Sweeney, blocked the defense from introducing evidence on the involvement of the FBI. Sweeney barred three defense witnesses, including Dr. Ali, from testifying about the FBI’s longterm harassment of Abdul-Alim. Also prevented from giving evidence was Benjamin Swan, a state senator whom Abdul-Alim had contacted prior to his arrest to discuss his FBI harassment. Of the fourteen jurors, twelve were white and one was black. The jury returned a hung verdict twice, warranting a retrial. Sweeney did not accept the verdict until the jurors reached a “consensus”: guilty. Abdul-Alim was sentenced to four to six years and still faces another ten years in relation to the second set of charges. The Springfield Police Department and the FBI declined to comment on the case. Siham Stewart changed her address and was unreachable via cellphone. *** Officially, COINTELPRO operations ended in 1971 but the use of informants to infiltrate political and community organizations continued. What changed during the 1990s, and especially following 9/11, were the rationales used to justify such tactics: it was no longer the threat of black nationalist “subversion” but the threat of Muslim “radicalization” that was invoked. Moreover, with new provisions

in the 1996 Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act, the FBI could launch investigations of a suspected individual or organization simply for providing “material support [4]” to terrorism—a vague term that could include ideological activity unrelated to any actual plot to carry out violence. While COINTELPRO became notorious for flagrantly violating federal laws, these measures effectively legitimized the same kinds of investigation and criminalization of political dissent. Consider, for example, the case of Jamil al-Amin, formerly known as H. Rap Brown, a black Muslim activist whose targeting and subsequent incarceration encapsulates the historical continuities between FBI tactics of the 1960s and the post-9/11 period. In 1967, H. Rap Brown became the chairman of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), famous for its role in the civil rights movement but increasingly isolated after it opted to oppose the Vietnam War. Brown was twenty-three years old and already known for his powerful speeches in support of the Black Power movement. Placed at the top of the FBI’s target list of black revolutionaries, over the next three years he faced a succession of indictments, arrests, and attempted shootings and bombings. Eventually, in 1971, the government convicted Brown for involvement in an alleged robbery that, according to a contemporary report in The New York Times, may have been part of an attempt by radicals to prevent drug dealing in the black community. While in prison in New York, he converted to Islam and renamed himself Jamil al-Amin. After he was released in 1976, he settled in Atlanta, Georgia, where he opened a community grocery store and helped rid the neighborhood of drugs. But he continued to face regular law enforcement harassment and arbitrary arrests. During the 1990s, in a bid to connect him to criminal activity, FBI informants were placed in the Atlanta Muslim community where he had become an imam. Despite accumulating a 44,000-page file on him, there seemed no viable means to return him to prison. Then, in 2000, al-Amin was arrested on murder charges and accused of being involved in a shoot-out with two Fulton

....

County Sheriff’s deputies, one of whom was killed. The surviving officer admitted to wounding the assailant in the exchange of gunfire. But despite the fact that alAmin had no injuries, the same officer still identified him as the shooter. Moreover, another person admitted to the crime in a sworn affidavit [5] and gave a more plausible account of events than the prosecution’s version. Undeterred by this confession and the lack of evidence linking al-Amin to the shoot-out, the jury convicted him to a lifetime prison sentence. At the Georgia State Prison in Reidsville, al-Amin continued his activism: he used the prison’s formal procedures to register a number of grievances relating to the inability of Muslim prisoners to practice their religion. As news of this spread among other prisoners, Muslims requested that he represent them in negotiations with the prison authorities. But an intelligence unit within the prison saw such developments as a threat and, in 2006, the FBI prepared [5] a report entitled, “The Attempt to Radicalize the Georgia Department of Corrections’ Inmate Muslim Population.” The report alleged that al-Amin was at the center of an organized attempt to create a Muslim “solidarity movement” in the Georgia prison system, which the FBI interpreted as raising “security and radicalization concerns.”

him back to solitary confinement in a Supermax prison. Followers of Jamil al-Amin have also been treated as terrorists over the last decade. Luqman Abdullah [6], an AfricanAmerican imam at a mosque on Detroit’s impoverished West Side, was killed in an FBI raid in 2009, the culmination of a two-year “counter-terrorist” operation that involved entrapping congregants into transporting stolen goods. Abdullah’s son, Omar Regan, views the killing as “unfinished business” from the days of COINTELPRO. Please support our journalism. Get a digital subscription for just $9.50! [7] In 2008, the FBI had a roster of 15,000 paid informants [8], a tenfold increase since 1975 when the number was 1,500. Some informants receive as much as $100,000 per case. Over the last decade, the FBI has on multiple occasions used these informants to manipulate Muslims into participating in staged terrorist plots that play well on the evening news and justify federal counter-terrorism budgets.

The following year, al-Amin was abruptly transferred to the Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, where the US government incarcerates those it accuses of being among the most dangerous alQaeda terrorists. At the age of seventy, he was placed in an underground cage 1,400 miles away from home. Despite being convicted only of state charges, he was held in a federal facility. For the last seven years, he has been in solitary confinement for twenty-three hours a day—a tactic that is widely considered to be a form of psychological torture.

The Newburgh Four [9] case is one of the most obvious examples. In 2009, an FBI informant, Shahed Hussain, used financial incentives to convince four impoverished black Muslim men from upstate New York to agree to play a role in his staged terrorist plot. In considering the case, Judge Colleen McMahon criticized the FBI’s approach, stating: “I believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that there would have been no crime here except the government instigated it, planned it, and brought it to fruition.” Nevertheless, the Newburgh Four each received twenty-five-year prison sentences. Hussain had earlier ensnared two other men—Yassin Aref and Mohammed Hossain of Albany, New York—in a sting operation that resulted in fifteen-year sentences. Since 9/11, there has not been a successful entrapment defense in a terrorism-related prosecution.

Over the last year, al-Amin’s health has deteriorated dramatically and he received a preliminary diagnosis of multiple myeloma, a life-threatening blood cancer. His supporters flooded the Supermax prison and the Bureau of Prisons with calls, leading the authorities to transfer him to a federal medical center where he could be properly diagnosed and treated. In September, he was diagnosed with cancer but prison authorities are currently refusing to treat him and plan to transfer

Hussain’s role in the Newburgh and Albany cases is eerily similar [10] to what FBI agent Hisgen hoped Abdul-Alim would do among Springfield’s Muslims in his “deal of a lifetime.” The way the FBI pressured Ayyub Abdul-Alim to work for them is typical of the countless attempts made in the post-9/11 era to recruit Muslim informants. What makes his case different is that he took the unusual step of refusing. He sought justice through the legal system and, as with every other

post-9/11 case in which a Muslim in the United States has mounted an entrapment defense, was unsuccessful. Thanks to Edward Snowden’s revelations, surveillance is again a topic of public discussion. But the mainstream debate ignores what government surveillance and criminalization actually mean for targeted communities. The black Muslim experience of being targeted by informants ought to make for an important case study but is hidden from view. While there are overlaps with the experiences of other Muslims and other black people in the United States, the black Muslim experience has its own distinctive history, marked by decades of government spying and criminalization. In the Cold War, black Muslims were seen as constituting a radical threat of subversion; in the War on Terror, the combination of their race and religion makes them easy prey for sting operations, which, on closer inspection, look more like entrapments. While there is now awareness and outrage at the J. Edgar Hoover-era suppression of legitimate dissent, this historical lesson is rarely applied to our own time. With much of the evidence that supported Abdul-Alim’s case ruled inadmissible, the trial came down to a matter of whose testimony to trust—law enforcement officers or a black man with previous convictions. In his closing statement, the prosecutor urged jury members to ask themselves if it was more likely that Abdul-Alim was caught with a gun or that the police and FBI “conspired” to entrap him. Apparently, this was sufficient to keep Abdul-Alim in prison. consent to marriage mandatory and gave women the opportunity to inherit, own property, run businesses and participate in government. She listed right after right that women in Islam held nearly 1,250 years before women's lib was ever thought of in the West. Surprisingly, Islam turned out to be the religion that appealed to my feminist ideals. Getting married It might shock you to know that I had an arranged marriage. That doesn't mean I was forced to marry my father's first choice suitor, like Jasmine from "Aladdin." Dad didn't even have a say. When I converted, it wasn't a good time to be a Muslim. Feeling isolated, alienated and rejected by my own society pushed me to want to start a family of my own. Even before converting, I had always wanted a serious relationship but found few men looking for the same. As a new Muslim, I knew there was a better way to look for love and a lifelong partnership. I decided that if I wanted a serious relationship, it was time to get serious about finding one. I wanted an arranged marriage. I made a list of "30 Rock"-style deal breakers. I searched. I interviewed. I interrogated friends and families of prospects. I decided I wanted to marry another convert, someone who had been where I was and wanted to go where I wanted to go. Thanks to parents of friends, I found my now-husband, a convert to Islam, in Mobile, Alabama, two hours from my New Orleans home. Twelve years later, we are living happily ever after.

Not every Muslim finds a mate in this manner, and I didn't always see this for my life. But I am glad Islam afforded me this option. Living in a post-9/11 world I never had to give up my personality, American identity or culture to be a Muslim. I have, at times, had to give up on being treated with dignity. I have been spat on, had eggs thrown at me and been cursed at from passing cars. And I have felt terror when the mosque I attended in Savannah, Georgia, was first shot at, then burned down. In August 2012, I moved back home to New Orleans, where being different is the norm. I finally felt safe -- for a while. But now, with the continuous news coverage of the un-Islamic group known as ISIS, I have been subjected to much of the same treatment I received in other cities. And I now feel less safe than I ever have. It enrages me to know there are some who call themselves Muslims and who distort and misappropriate Islam for political gains. It weighs on me knowing that millions of my countrymen see only these images as a representative of my religion. It is unbearable to know that I am passionately hated for my beliefs, when those hating me don't even know what my beliefs are. In my journey to Islam, I came to learn that Muslims come in all shapes, sizes, attitudes, ethnicities, cultures and nationalities. I came to know that Islam teaches disagreement and that shouldn't lead to disrespect, as most Muslims want peace. Most of all, I have faith that my fellow Americans can rise above fear and hatred and come to learn the same.

Earlier this year the U.S. concluded a major arms deal with the Egyptian government, even as popular activists once heralded as the vanguard of democracy languished in prison. In response to rampant human rights abuses, the American government has remained tactfully mute, even offering inexplicable praise at times for the Egyptian government’s non-existent commitment to “democracy”. While the crackdown originally targeted its fury at supporters of deposed President Mohammed Morsi, it has now extended itself to left-wing groups and civil society activists. Major NGO’s have been forced out of the country, and journalists have been imprisoned after public show trials.

The sad truth behind all this is that the U.S. has always been a committed enemy of democracy in Egypt. Apart from a few short weeks in 2011 when global media coverage of popular demonstrations in Cairo’s Tahrir Square made such a position politically untenable, the U.S. has consistently supported Egyptian dictators willing to align with American policies in the region - particularly support for Israel and Gulf Arab dictatorships. The reality of this has not been lost on Egyptians, who have seen successive American governments help impose military rule upon them and stifle their hopes for a democratic future. It’s worth remembering that the ideology which inspired Al Qaeda was itself born in the torture chambers of Egyptian government prisons. And when the military under General Sisi last year

It could either open itself up to a new dialogue with the community or face a public condemnation and, quite likely, steppedup legal pressure.

While heretofore such groups have largely eschewed a violent response in the (likely misplaced) hope that the international community will eventually intervene on their behalf, it’s difficult to imagine them continuing on this path indefinitely in the face of escalating repression. Abboud al-Zumar, a former member Egyptian Islamic Jihad who spent 30 years in prison for his role in the assassination of Anwar Sadat, said upon his amnesty after the 2011 Revolution: “The revolution created a new mechanism, the mechanism of strong, peaceful

speech. The mosque chose to cooperate. Since January, police and city officials have engaged in a number of unprecedented sessions hosted by the mosque. In the presence of mosque leaders, police and city officials met with returned fighters like Talha to assess their risk levels. They also met with members of the mosque’s youth group to dissuade other young Muslims from traveling to the Middle East. In monthly meetings, city officials, police and members of the mosque hierarchy are now debating religious ideology, Danish law and freedom of

The mosque still openly backs a caliphate in the Middle East, refuses to offer a blanket denunciation of the Islamic State and warns that Denmark’s recent decision to join the U.S.-led coalition in airstrikes against the militant group may only fan the fires of homegrown terrorism. Yet Grimhojvej has undeniably nuanced its public position, rejecting, for instance, the Islamic State’s beheadings of foreign hostages. Saadi denies allegations that the mosque became a recruiting center for militants, saying it did not discourage

protests…the climate for armed action is finished and the main reason is the atmosphere of freedom we are now establishing… violence breeds violence.” Those avenues of peaceful democratic protest and representation have now been violently shut. As many analysts have pointed out, the repression of the Sisi regime in many ways dwarfs that of even Mubarak or Sadat. It remains to be seen what these policies – both tacitly and actively condoned by the Obama administration – will eventually give rise to in response. But if history is any guide, the answer will not be good. https://firstlook.org/ theintercept/2014/10/16/egypts-u-sbacked-military-regime-brutalizingstudent-protestors/

or encourage those who wanted to go and fight. But now, its official line — at least in public — is that the young Muslims of Aarhus should stay home. Police officials say the statistics prove their approach is working. “In 2013, we had 30 young people go to Syria,” said Jorgen Ilum, Aarhus’s police commissioner. “This year, to my knowledge, we have had only one. We believe that the main reason is our contact and dialogue with the Muslim community.”

Hajj: A Conference, Meeting and Cooperation Among the Muslims By Sheikh Dr. Saud Ibn Ibrahim As-Shareem, Imam and Khateeb of the Holy Mosque , And Dean of the Faculty of Shari'a at Ummu Al-Qura University. Since Abraham called the people to perform the pilgrimage, different nations and colors are still coming to the House of Allah every year from every nook and cranny with strong desire to see it and circumambulate around it. Their hearts pulsate at seeing it. Rich and poor; hundreds of thousands of them respond to the Call of Allah, which was made by Abraham (peace be upon him). They all wear a Uniform (of white unsewn towel) for men, after they take off their traditional dresses, (but women can wear any garment that cover their whole bodies). The appearance of the pilgrims look the same, without any distinction between some one from East and the West; nor between Arabs and non Arabs. They all wear one uniform and direct their face to one Lord with one supplication. "I am present! I am present O Allah I am present! You have no partner! I am present! Indeed praise and bounty are Yours and the Realm! You have no partner!" You will see them abandoning their slogans, mottoes, and all forms of fanaticism. They raise one banner; the banner of La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammad Rasulullahi (There is no deity except Allah; Muhammad is the Messenger of Allahk. The people of different races, ethnic groups of diffent languages circumambulate around the sole House of the Almighty Allah, (Kaba), they all perform one Religious Rite. When the Almighty Allah ordained the Pilgrimage; and the Wisdom behind it was for mankind He wanted all of them to be one nation in complete co-operation and harmony like on human body, whenever any part of it suffers from any ailment, the rest of the whole body suffer from fever and sleeplessness. Whoever plans to perform the pilgrimage must be prepared for it. He should wear Al-Ihram at the appointed station for it; and after entering Makkah it becomes prohibited for him to hunt or kill any animal while in the state of Al-Ihram. It also becomes prohibited for him to cut his hair, nails. These demonstrate austerity in addition, they signify the meaning of the genuine. During the time of pilgrimage every Muslim learns to respect the right of every human being to life, regardless of his, or her social economic status. He never violates them, never treats anybody wrongly. Every wise and just person knows that true peace harmony of the hearts are available only in Islam and its History. Humanity is in dire need of Islam in this era. The world is suffering from bloody conflicts and savage disputes. It needs entering into the Holy House of Allah!! In order to redeem Humanity from selfishness, hatred, dislike and enmity, and to raise it up to the horizon of Islam, in order to learn about the life through Islam and to be in cohesive Unity as Allah wished it for His Faithful servants. By these collective qualities, Islam admits there is no logic in forcing peoples to live in a state of mutual dislike. But they need to be on the Right path which paves the way for the entire Muslims to be in complete solidarity society, in which mutual love prevails. Peace and security are extended for the people on

the earth. The Almighty Allah made all Human Beings from the two Parents. He made this Human Origin a confluence, where all affinities meet and consolidate themselves. {O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that Ye may know each other (Not that ye may despise each other)}(49: 13). It is indeed to know each other, not to boast to each other. To co-operate with each other not to dispute with each other. The differences in languages, colors, nature, and their countries are all just varieties, which do not necessitate eruption of conflicts, and disputes among them; but all that just qualities necessitate co-operation in undertaking all factors of progress and development and to meet their needs; and not color, race, language or country. Not even all other considerations in the World that have weight in the scale of Allah. The earth is for Allah and all are servants of Allah, therefore, there is only one scale by which all values are measurements and the virtues of people are known, and those Measurements are piety. {The most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you}(49: 13). The true honourable person in the sight of Allah is he who is weighs things by knowledge and acquaintance. {Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things)(49: 13). The Religious Brotherhood strengthens the Solidarity among the Muslims; it never encourages blind fanaticism; but it supports the Faithful Muslim Reformers, in order to establish the truth, nullify falsity, repel aggression and endures what can be endured. A Muslim shall not be left alone in a battle field. He should be helped and assisted in any case. He should be guided if he goes astray, prevented from verbal assaults against others. He should also be defended when his rights are violated by others and fight with him if that is lawful. These are the meanings of mutual help and assistance, mentioned by the Prophet (peace be upon him); "Help your brother; whether he is oppressor or oppressed". By these meanings, it become apparent that the Muslim Brotherhood, Co-Operation and solidarity, renouncement of fanaticism, of the period of ignorance, are all emanated from the Great Wisdom, for which Allah made the Pilgrimage lawful. Peace among the Muslims is one of the mainstays of the Pilgrimage. But sadly enough make people live under the shade of Human Systems and man-made Laws which are very far from genuine peace and cohesion and fraternity. They have given their rein to the Devil (Satan) and have made him overcome and induced them to committing sins and disobedience of Allah. The Shatan filled their hearts with hatred and malice against each others, vanity, and pride and incite them to perpetrate injustice, oppression and aggression, except those who receive the Mercy of Allah, from Whom we seek help. And there is no power and no strength save in Allah. Source: Jamal Al-Haushabi - jhaushabi@gmail.com, from The Project for the Glorification of the Sacred City -- www. makkah.org.sa
