Starting in the academic year 2016-2017 the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will be adding transgender education to its curriculum. Transgender is a new term for many people. It is defined as people who are born with typical male

or female anatomies but feel as though they’ve been born into the “wrong body.” This should not be confused with the Islamic concept of Mukhannathun (which acknowledges people who are born with biological qualities of both genders and has specific religious opinions about them),

Community News Scholarship for Islamic Seminary Honors Memory of Parents By Hena Zuberi

“Qalam Seminary is a very empowering and influential program,” says Abbassi who has studied under Shaykh Abdul Nasir Jangda, the head of the Qalam Institute, as has his counterpart Abdirashid. Abdirasheid attended the Bayyinah DREAM program 2011-2012, where he studied under Shaykh Jangda.

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Every parent dreams of children who will be a source of continuous good deeds after their deaths. The young founders of 3Di Athletics lost their parents in the past year. Abdirashid Ahmed and Abdilfatah Ahmed's father, Hussein Ahmed. passed away in September 2014, and Ahmed and Omar Abbassi lost their mother, Fatima Zehra Abbasi, five months ago. To honor them and to make a sadaqa jariyah (continuous charity) after their passing, the two sets of brothers created the ‘Zehra and Hussein Scholarship.’ The fund will provide an annual $6,000 academic scholarship for one or two qualified students who are attending the Qalam Seminary in Dallas, TX. 3Di will have an application process for this scholarship and the money will be given to students in the top five percent of the class.

3Di Athletics co-founders Omar Abbasi (right) and Abdirashid Ahmed started a scholarship fund to help students who want to learn Islam at the Qalam Seminary in Texas. The Qalam Seminary program is the vision of Sh. AbdulNasir Jangda to develop qualified and relevant leadership for the Muslim community. The program is in its 3rd year and has graduated over 35 students - the majority of which are sisters. “Qalam students have taken on a number

of different roles in masajid across America including: Assistant Imams, Youth Directors, Chaplains, Sisters Coordinators, Islamic School Teachers, and students who have gone overseas to continue further Islamic studies,” says Omar Usman, board member of the Qalam Institute.

Abbassi was scheduled to study at the seminary with his Dar us Salaam Hifdh school and University of Maryland college friends Naeem Baig and Ammar Nada, but was unable to go. “I want to help someone who [is] studying there,” he says. Omar Abbassi still keeps his mother’s Qur'an journal in his car— where his mother would write personal reflections on verses of the Qur'an. “I am still benefiting after she passed away- why not add to her deeds, why not continue things that she can’t after she has passed away,”

Culinary Valedictorian Dreams of Opening Gourmet Halal Soul Food Restaurant By Hena Zuberi

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Quran Carlos-Ali has a delicious dream— her own halal gourmet soul food business. An Internal Revenue Service employee, she learned to cook at the age of 12 from her grandmother and wanted to pursue her passion. In a warehouse that could hold several Costcos, on Friday, October 9, 2015, wearing a chef’s jacket and hat, she graduated from the Maryland Food Bank’s FoodWorks program, the culinary training designed to enable low-income students to strengthen their skills in the kitchen while producing healthy meals for those in need. Carlos-Ali earned

the highest GPA in this batch and was granted the Valedictorian award for this course through a partnership with the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC). Two other students earned the Best in Kitchen and Best Life Attitude award. All three students were presented with knife sets from Chef Matt Delano, executive chef at Maggiano’s. Quran was ecstatic with her new set. She had found the program online while searching for a culinary school and when she saw the students feed people, she was stirred.

his regular fundraising talks. This lecture was raw and personal. He noted that the houses in the area are abandoned and people are migrating from Baltimore. “We are at the place of great opportunity,” he pronounced, ”I love this community.” He emphasised the essence of sacrifice is that you sacrifice something now for something in the future.

Muslim Link Staff Reporter As Hurricane Joaquin pelted the Atlantic coast, Imam Siraj Wahhaj came down from New York on October 3, 2015 to ask the community to support the Masjid al Haqq housing project in Baltimore. Despite the lack of a robust audience, the iconic inner-city masjid raised $14,000 of the goal of $30,000. “We are grateful for what Allah has given us to start this project. We continue to solicit support to make this dream a reality,” says Hakim Lucky, the Ameer of Masjid al Haqq. “This project is about bringing the Muslims together as a community so we can practice Islam as a community,” he said. The vision is to build to bring the Muslims close together so that they can live together and create an educational system so that they don't have pay for Islam. Lucky stressed sincerity and brotherhood during his speech.

“We charge for Islam in this country,” said Lucky, as he implored the community to raise the funds needed to fulfil the vision. “We see our children being adversely affected by the environment because we are not fortifying them,” he reminded the rows of men and women who sat in the musallah of Masjid al Haqq.

Imam Siraj shared how his masjid built a community in a city with a million Muslims. “In New York, we bought a building in an area with 15 crack houses. Another Muslim Shot and Killed in Richmond, Virginia By Muslim Link Staff Another father shot down and yet another Muslim brother murdered in Richmond, Virginia. Crisis Hotline for Youth by Youth Rings in Howard County By Hena Zuberi

in rural areas who often do not have any Muslim community to rely on. Some want to know if something is haram (permissible), others need resources.

Muslim Link Staff Reporter

The launch of the only Youth Crisis Hotline with a Muslim perspective based in the United States is good news for the thousands of young men and women, who need help in moments when they feel they have no one else to turn to. 443-4290095 is the number that youth around the country can call. This free line is for youth of all backgrounds, regardless of their faith and background, funded by the Muslim community, has an anonymous and confidential capability through ILIA’s http://ask.fm/iliaadvice web presence. “This is the only service in America for Muslim youth —there are a ton of youth hotlines— but these kids are looking for Islamic answers and perspective,” says Ayman Nassar, President of the Islamic Leadership Institute of America (ILIA), the Howard County organization that initiated the program to address problems including teen suicide and drug abuse. The Muslim community suffers from the same challenges as the rest of the country. Muslim youth are not immune to engaging in risky behavior. According to a study published in the Journal of Muslim Mental Health, Prevalence of risk behaviors among U.S. Muslim college students, approximately half of the Muslim college age students have engaged in premarital sex and alcohol use, and 19 percent of women and 28 percent of men have tried illicit drugs. The hotline is staffed by volunteers who

Parents call as well. “People don’t talk about [issues], they are very discreet about it with family friends and relatives. They suffer in silence. It is important that the community try to realize that these issues exist and our [Islamic] centers have resources to deal with them or at least acknowledge them and refer people to professionals,” says Nassar. receive calls on a number designated by them. They do not ask for any identifying information. The service informally started in 2009 with the question-answer forum, ask.fm. Youth started contacting ILIA for a variety of topics — as the volume of calls increased the ILIA team decided to start a more formal service. Fliers were sent to MSAs, Youth groups and masajid. “We are not an emergency service; if you need 911, don’t call us,” says Nassar. The normal response time is immediate and at the most a few hours, depending on the time zone the call is originating from. Since its launch, calls have been received from around the country. Some problems are as mundane as a child feeling overwhelmed with stressful situations at school, while other youth are dealing with being kicked out of their homes. “I am sitting in math class, I am homeless, have no money, no hope,” shared a recent caller. “My parents are always fighting. I am scared that they may get a divorce,” cried another teen. The person staffing

the crisis line analyses the situation, sometimes over a long period of time and makes suggestions. If the client is at risk, the crisis counselor may recommend a call to law enforcement. Some callers are concerned about their friend’s activities. “Some are lonely, others are bullied, or can’t sleep at night,” says Nassar. He says that they have dealt with runaways, who are usually in the 12-16 age range as well as cases where parents have thrown the kids out of the home. Many cool down after talking to the crisis line and go back home. Other times, Nassar and his team have picked up children, driven them to safety, acted as buffers between the child and family and provided local resources for help. “It is very needed service considering the number of Muslim kids in the country that face one challenge or another,” says Nassar. One young woman who called was a victim of incest, said Nassar, and her local masjid had shunned her and swept the abuse under the rug. She was in trauma. In a situation like this a good volunteer would use emotional intelligence and take it one step at a time, says Nassar. The crisis counselors calm callers down, suggest resources, or recommend the client call law enforcement. The helpline has helped avert two suicides, according to Nassar. A local youth, considering ending her life, was successfully intervened and her parents were given the number for a local psychiatrist who helped them. This hotline is a lifeline for Muslim youth

....

The Youth Crisis center is looking for diverse volunteers of all ages. They need people to take in calls and direct callers to resources. ILIA will also prepare volunteers for what they might encounter on the calls. The volunteers are trained and certified according to several criteria related to communication skills, problem solving and understanding of Islamic values. Counselors are required to have basic Islamic knowlegde. Calls are answered by the first available counselor. “It’s just like when you call a service call center, the service agent could be of either gender.” says Nassar, “the training does include how to deal with [the] other gender and more importantly what to ask, and how to ask it. In some cases remember the youth access [ILIA] online and sometimes are fully anonymous.” An ideal volunteer is someone who is empathetic, non-judgmental, patient and has speaking skills. Volunteers don’t need counseling experience, says Nassar, and youth above the age of 16 are welcome to apply. A mature 16 year old may be the perfect person to answer a crisis call, says Nassar. Psychologists, social workers, mental health professionals are also needed to volunteer behind the scenes, as well as other health professionals. A local doctor in Maryland has been accepting ILIA referred youth and providing free physicals for youth without health insurance; ILIA pays for the lab tests and medication. They have an attorney on call who gives pro bono legal advice in case a youth needs it. Interested in volunteering- please email YC@Islamicleadership.com

Parents will also not be able to opt out of a classroom taught by a transgender teacher. Parents question what will happen if Mr. Clark becomes Mrs. Clark, will the parents even be notified? Will staff get sued for using the wrong pronoun? There are many questions. All the seats on the Fairfax county school board are up for reelection. Local churches are actively informing their members on how to vote on this issue and who to support during the school board election on November 3, 2015. Peace Islamic Center in Burke, VA, Masjid Al Noor in Springfield, VA and the Moroccan American Community Organization in Fairfax, VA have taken steps to inform their communities about the issue and rallying them to get out and vote on November 3, 2015. There is a lot of misinformation on the Internet about the exact changes made to the policies and curriculum. The new topic will be taught to students in grades seventh through 10th grade, according to some reports but the school board website indicates that during ninth and tenth grades students will ‘learn how maturation affects adolescent development and learn to recognize the development of sexuality as a lifelong aspect of personality. Students are provided definitions for heterosexual, homosexual, and bisexual, and transgender and that all persons deserve to be treated with respect regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.’ A May statement by the school board read that: “The decision by the Fairfax County

Islamic law, by the consensus of scholars for the past millennia and half, prohibits same-sex acts. Muslims believe that Allah has created humans on fitrah (natural state). In terms of sexuality, opposite gender attraction is the natural state. It is possible for fitrah to be corrupted by internal and external means. Homosexual thoughts are also not considered sinful unless acted upon. Islam also teaches compassion and many scholars counsel Muslims who have homosexual urges to control them for the sake of Allah and take it as a test from the Creator. Imams teach kindness for people who are fighting their homosexual urges. But teaching young adults that homosexuality is an acceptable lifestyle choice is not acceptable, says Mufti Husain. Omar Abdelrehim is the President of Peace Islamic Center, a disabled Navy veteran and a parent of three children in the FCPS district. He is an ardent advocate for parents’ rights and is shocked at the changes made in the curriculum. He was at Masjid Al Noor on Friday and on the Greed For Ilm podcast talking up the issue.

Many Muslim parents believe that these are topics should be taught at home or as the parents deem fit, not in public schools. During a tour of the facility, Najma Jones of the Foodworks program, shared the creative ways food is preserved. She is a full-time chef at the MFB state of the art kitchen and helps train students in the same program she graduated from a few years ago. “Allah has provided enough food for us. People are hungry not because of a lack of food,” said the mother of five, pointing to shelves of stacked with thousands of tons of chicken, “The issue is access to the food,” she said as she led me through miles of freezer space that held cooked and uncooked food. Local grocery stores donate their perishable and non-perishable items to the food bank and these make their way through the program into the plates of thousand of food insecure Marylanders.

“I have never seen that many green beans and potatoes in one place,” said John Shaw in his speech, class representative, to the families of the graduates, describing the amount of work that the chefs put in each day. The MFB sources all it produce from local farmers. “One year we were getting a hundred thousand pounds of potatoes a week,” said Jones. The community kitchen —one of the very few in the state— and the FoodWorks program at MFB is able to cook and preserve produce and meat so it is not thrown into the trash. “I would work here for free because of the nature of the work,” said Jones, whose team feeds 4500 nutritious meals a day to hungry children every day through the summer food service program and 4500 meals a week through the school lunch program. Jones tells her students: “You are cooking for people who are the most vulnerable. The least of their worries should be if the food that they are eating is safe. They may not have anything else so let's put out the best food we can.” Spike Gjerde, the winner of the prestigious 2015 James Beard Award Winner and the

chef and owner of the Woodberry Kitchen was the chief guest at the graduation. “Cook with love— just imagine that what you are cooking is going to someone you love,” advised Gjerde. “The skills you have learned here will greatly help you as you head down the road,” he said. “Our connection to food is real and it matters,” he said, sharing his culinary theory. Carlos-Ali hopes to work at a halal restaurant and bring the standards that she has learned to the halal restaurant industry, before she launches her soul food carry-out. Four juveniles were arrested and two were charged with arson of the property. The police investigation continues. So far there are no indications that this was a hate crime. “Connecting with neighbors and the larger interfaith community plays a tremendous role in keeping everyone safe. We cannot isolate ourselves and think that will protect us, shared Zainab Chaudhry of CAIR-MD as she advised people not to react until the investigation into the fire was complete. In light of the growing number of threats targeting faith-based institutions, on December 10, 2015 the Maryland Outreach Department of the Council on American-Islamic Relations will partner with the Maryland Governor's Office on Community Initiatives and the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights to organize the first statewide 'Maryland Emergency Preparedness Summit for Faith Leaders. The event is specifically designed to educate faith leaders of all religious backgrounds on the nature and scope of challenges potentially facing their houses of worship. The summit will feature experts from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Maryland Emergency Management Agency, and the Maryland State Police, among others. For a cost of ten dollars masjid leaders can attend the event at the Center for Social Change at 6600 Amberton Drive in Elkridge, MD. Summit speakers will expand on what constitutes a hate crime; provide preventative measures and techniques to safeguard property and people; suggest strategies to counter intolerance; share information on grants and other local, state and federal resources; and empower faith leaders to implement measures and policies to protect themselves and their communities. "Diverse faith communities have become increasingly vulnerable to religious and racial intolerance, hate crimes and mass casualty incidents," said CAIR Maryland Outreach Manager

in men after them. They patrolled in front of the crack houses for forty days and nights —twenty-four hours a day. When customers came by they told them, 'No more, it's closed.' If a drug dealer came by he was escorted out of the community. Between the brothers and the police, the crack houses stayed shut. "13 years later, look at Masjid Al Taqwa now,” he stated. Over 2,000 men, women, children worship there every Friday. He advised the Baltimore Muslims to think big, based on his experience. He also cautioned them about the effects of gentrification. Bahjah Muntaqeel has attended Masjid Al Haqq since the 80s. She remembers the start of the masjid in a horse stable. She recalls the change from the Nation of Islam. “The area Muslims always defended us and it felt safe. People used to rent around the masjid and there were businesses owned by Muslims and then I don't know what happened in the early 2000s, but they all trickled away and it reverted back to the neighborhood that it was before the Muslims came,” she told the Muslim Link. The mood in the country changed and the older Muslims in the community started dying, she says, which may be the reason for the change. Their deaths left a void. ”We are trying to prepare the younger ones to take over but it is difficult as they mingle and they become confused,” she says. She was shocked to see the empty chairs at the event; she came early because she was sure it would be sold out. Aamir Ali, a regular attendee and a PhD student at John Hopkins University asked the attendees to make dua for the initiative as that is what is needed the most. He wishes more Muslims from out of the neighborhood should honor the brothers with their presence and come and see what their community was about and then Allah will take care of the rest. The weather forced the event to wind down quickly and many left without eating. The masjid is still raising funds for its housing project. Visit https://masjidtime.com/masjid/ulhaqq/ to donate.

There was a protest also planned in front of Masjid Muhammad in Washington, D.C. on the eve of 20th anniversary of the Million Man March. In one of their emails the protest organizers said they were going to bring 3000 armed people to Washington D.C., according to Ibrahim Mumin, director of community relations for Masjid Muhammad. Imam Talib Shareef and Board of Advisors urged all members and visitors to avoid any confrontation with the demonstrators as ‘their goal is to not only intimidate and terrorize Muslims, but to also illicit a response from [Muslims] in order to create a violent confrontation which they can use against [Muslims]. The masjid administration asked masjid attendees to adhere to a safety protocol while visiting the masjid that included no weapons, bags or large purses, and congregating in front of the masjid. Flyers stating “Hate-Free Zone” peppered the block around the masjid as neighbors lent their support to the historical masjid community. Neighbors recognized that the masjid is a source of benefit for many folks who have been left behind by the gentrification of surrounding areas. Local security was arranged for prior to the protest at both sites. The rallies were organized on social media. The Maryland rally was sketched together by a Mike White. Anti-Muslim, anti-Obama and anti-immigrant memes, trolls and many Muslims virtually defending Islam through their keyboards populated the Facebook page he ran. Many of the so called patriots believe that they are saving Muslims from a “death cult” and insist that they are not hateful people. White had plans to rent a live pig to walk up and down, pass out copies of the Qur'an to desecrate and ‘tons of bacon’ as he shared in a video posted on the Facebook page.

partners. The board of Dar Al Taqwa, after consultation with scholars and leaders at Muslim Community Center, Islamic Society of Baltimore and Islamic Community Center of Laurel, decided to completely ignore the protesters and issued a statement advising Muslims to stay at home and pray. The statement read: “This group is looking for attention only. BOD have contacted the group leader and tried to discuss issue, unfortunately are looking to pick a fight only. This group is armed and dangerous.” The masjid was open for salah; all other activities were canceled. The Islamic Society of North America had issued a special announcement calling Muslim communities to stress civic engagement and coalition building by holding voter registration drives as a response to the rallies and to invite interfaith partners to join the voter drive.

Attorney's office, and Howard County Police Department, according to a statement released to the community. Howard County Police assured masjid leaders that they would arrest anyone standing on the masjid side on Route 108. The protesters could not gather on the county property adjacent to the Masjid and inside the Cedar Lane Park. They were given a permit to protest across the street on the county property. Police stationed officers around the masjid and had 3-4 squad cars on stand by. The day of the event was uneventful at DAT. A few interfaith partners came with signs of support and were immediately invited into the building. "I'm Jewish. I know what it's like to be hated for my religion. Mosque leaders asked people to ignore this group, but I decided to come anyway because there's no place for this nonsense in our county,” said a supporter.

The days before the event were fraught with drama as White canceled the rally due to lack of participation and funds. A day later the rally event page was back in action.

On the bright side, the proactive manner masjid boards, civil rights organizations, local police departments and other agencies interacted with each other was reassuring. Howard County Police and Howard County Department of Permits and Codes contacted the DAT Board of Directors on the day the group filed for the permit.

“I showed up. I drove three hours. Where was ya'll? [sic] Where?” lamented a protester on the Facebook page as the couple who organized the event came to the protest site at 10:45 a.m., across the street from DAT, and then left after a few minutes. The same scene replayed in front of Masjid Muhammad.

Values Coalition, is pro-Zionist and takes vitriolic anti-Muslim positions including attacks on CAIR and shariah. She is a Catch-22 for Muslims who agree with her on the issue of parental rights in public schools, yet are deeply concerned about her views about Muslims. Abdelrahim was introduced to the issue through Brickner, who has served the county for two terms. Mychele Brickner is often called an antiLGBT activist. She says even though the opposition uses labels like bigot, anti-gay and anti-transgender, no one has malice in their hearts against the children who have this issue. “We want them to be treated compassionately and we don't want bullying. [However] we don't want children who don't have this issue to be forced in situations with the opposite sex, no matter what they think they are.” she says. She worries that her school district will face the same issues that two other school districts faced. Referring to the situation in Gloucester County where a young boy who identifies as a girl was allowed to use the bathroom of the gender that he identified with. The Stafford and Gloucester County School Boards did the right thing to state that students must use the restrooms according to their biological gender and to provide an accommodation for the affected student, she wrote in April article.

“[Parents] don’t want kids to think that this is normal and appreciated. We want [our children] to be tolerant but in so many ways the Family Life curriculum beyond tolerance– it is about appreciating and accepting anything and everything.” Brickner informed the Muslim Link that an unauthorized survey on gender identity and sexual orientation was sent by the school administration to all FCPS high school students in June 2015. Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation, a

County School Board held at the Thomas Jefferson School of Science and Technology was attended by a large number of the general public. Hundreds could not enter the building due to the limited space. Many were concerned about the quick turnaround with this decision when other topics like school start time and end time has taken the school board ten years to discuss and finalize. “If there is no evidence the policy will work, again, we raise the question ‘what’s the rush?'” parent Jun Yuan asked the

LGBT advocacy organization, sponsored this survey. The version of the survey “on emotions” shown to parents did not contain these questions, says Brickner. She believes that this survey will be used to get further support for the transgender education.

The only way to address this issue for people of faith is to opt out of the Family Life Education curriculum at the beginning of the school year. However the school district has also made policy changes that will make it difficult for parents to opt out as some topics will be taught under the health curriculum, which does not offer opt outs.

In Brickner’s flyer, which was also sent out by Masjid al Noor and other masajid, a mother related her son’s experience, “that they had introduced words and concepts to him in 8th grade that terrified him, such as anal and oral sex... as he put it, he couldn’t get his overactive imagination to stop thinking about it. He said with teenage hormones affecting him, he felt afraid of his thoughts. All the other kids were imagining things too, and eventually started talking about them.”

LGBT activists say that it is essential to

Coptic, Catholics and Korean churches with her concerns. Parents don't want their children to be faced with this. Brickner agrees that some accommodations are necessary. If a child has biological gender issues, they should be given a private bathroom in the school to use— it is the forcing all children to be in a mixed-gender environment, i.e. housing the kids on overnight trips for debate teams and sports teams that makes parents and students very uncomfortable. “It is about the 99 percent who have to change how we have always operated for a small number of students who may have this issue,” says Brickner. “If you are going to change the culture so radically then you are bound to have pushback.” Voting is on November 3 and each county resident is allowed to vote for four school board members— three at large members and one district member. Omar Fateh is a Muslim running for one of the At-Large seats and is against the policy changes, as are At-Large candidates Jeanette Hough, Bob Copeland and Manar JeanJacques, and challengers Tom Wilson (Sully), Mark Wilkinson (Hunter Mill), Anthony Stacy (Mt. Vernon) and Peter Kurzenhauser (Dranesville).

school board at the June meeting. “School should be restricted to academics and this education should be done at home,” says Abdelrahim. “It is important for our children and our future and it is important to raise our children and schools need to be a partner and not something that we fight. Minority communities are willing to inform their membership that this is wrong,” says Brickner. The only recourse parents and taxpayers have to what has happened at FCPS is to elect a new school board, says Brickner. She and other activists have worked to ID a group of candidates who would consider running. Elizabeth Schultz is running again. She had not endorsed the flyer sent out and has reached out to Muslims,

As of the publication of this report, leaders of several large Fairfax County based Islamic Centers have not responded to queries about their or their organizations stance on this issue. “What do we do? I don't want my kids to learn this,” is the most common response Abdelrahim hears from concerned parents. Abdelrahim is talking to his three kids about transgender issues at home under the guidance of the Quran and Sunnah. He is considering pulling them out of FCPS and homeschooling them. “A lot of my neighbors homeschool their children,” he said.

Third Circuit to the City of New York: Being Muslim is not Reasonable Suspicion for Surveillance By Nadia Kayyali Electronic Frontier Foundation, 10/15/2015 Being Muslim can’t be the basis for law enforcement surveillance. That was the message from the Third Circuit on Tuesday when it told the plaintiffs in Hassan v. The City of New York that their lawsuit could go forward. The plaintiffs are suing over the New York Police Department’s suspicionless mass surveillance operation revealed by the Associated Press in 2011. The NYPD targeted the plaintiffs, who include student groups, imams, business owners, and individuals, based solely on religion. The court’s decision affirms

what should be an obvious principle: being Muslim (or from a country with a lot of Muslims) is not reasonable suspicion. But it did more than that. It gave the City a history lesson that bears repeating: What occurs here in one guise is not new. We have been down similar roads before. Jewish-Americans during the Red Scare, African-Americans during the Civil Rights Movement, and JapaneseAmericans during World War II are examples that readily spring to mind. don’t learn from history. 'Homeland is Racist': Artists Sneak Subversive Graffiti on to TV Show Street artists say they were asked to add authenticity to scenes of Syrian refugee camp, but took chance to air criticisms of show’s depiction of Muslim world online.

The Guardian, 10/15/2015

Three graffiti artists hired to add authenticity to refugee camp scenes in this week’s episode of Homeland have said they instead used their artwork to accuse the TV programme of racism.

The artists said they had been contacted in June by a fellow street artist who had been approached by a production company looking for people to add authenticity to the set – intended to portray a refugee camp on the SyrianLebanese border, but filmed on the outskirts of Berlin.

In the second episode of the fifth season, which aired in the US and Australia earlier this week, and will be shown in the UK on Sunday, lead character Carrie Mathison, played by Claire Danes, can be seen striding past a wall daubed with Arabic script reading: “Homeland is racist.”

The graffiti here says “Homeland is racist.” Photo courtesy of the artists.

“Given the series’ reputation,” they wrote, “we were not easily convinced, until we considered what a moment of intervention could relay about our own and many others’ political discontent with the series. It was our moment to make our point by subverting the message using the show itself.”

Anti-Drone Protestors Stage Die-In Outside Air & Space Museum Drone Event By Hena Zuberi Muslim Link Staff Reporter

Leaked by a whistle-blower and obtained by the Intercept news magazine, the Drone Papers are a cache of classified Pentagon documents detailing the inner workings of the U.S. military’s assassination program in Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia. In light of the revelations in the leaked secret documents, on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 protesters gathered at the Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. They were protesting an event at the museum called “Predator: Transforming Modern Warfare with Drones” with speaker James G. “Snake” Clark, who oversaw killer drone operations while working with the Pentagon. Activists called on the Air and Space Museum to stop glorifying these gruesome tools of war. “Drones have a 98 percent civilian kill rate. Air and Space, you ought to know— killer drones have got to go!” chanted the protesters. National museums are no place for propaganda, said Medea Benjamin, co-founder of the peace organization, CODEPINK. “[Clark] is a member of the military who has used the drones and RACIST

In an early meeting with the production team, they were, the statement claims, handed images of “pro-Assad graffiti – apparently natural in a Syrian refugee camp”. The trio decided instead to use the opportunity to air their criticisms of the show, adding graffiti stating: “Homeland is NOT a series”, “The situation is not to be trusted” and “This show does not represent the views of the artists.” The Arabic script was not checked by producers, they claimed. “The content of what was written on the walls … was of no concern. In their eyes, Arabic

is probably giving a one sided, glorified version of this technology.” According to the Intercept, the Obama administration has “portrayed drones script is merely a supplementary visual that completes the horror-fantasy of the Middle East, a poster image dehumanising an entire region to humanless figures in black burkas and moreover, this season, to refugees.” Amin told the Guardian: “We think the show perpetuates dangerous stereotypes by diminishing an entire region into a farce through the gross misrepresentations that feed into a narrative of political propaganda. “It is clear they don’t know the region they are attempting to represent. And yet, we suffer the consequences of such shallow and misguided representation.” Homeland has frequently run into controversy during its five seasons,

as an effective and efficient weapon in the ongoing war with al Qaeda and other radical groups.” The Drone Papers reveal that the U.S. military has faced “critical shortfalls” in both technology particularly over its depiction of the Muslim world and its portrayal of an apparently cosy relationship between Al-Qaida and Hezbollah. After season four depicted Islamabad as a “hellhole”, a Pakistan embassy spokesperson, Nadeem Hotiana, said: “Maligning a country that has been a close partner and ally of the US … is a disservice not only to the security interests of the US but also to the people of the US.” Showtime, which makes Homeland, has not yet responded to the artists’ claims. “However, as Homeland always strives to be subversive in its own right and a stimulus for conversation, we can’t help but admire this act of artistic sabotage.” Showtime’s network president, David Nevins, said earlier this year, ahead of the filming of season five, that Homeland would not necessarily continue with Islamist protagonists: “We’re not necessarily going to stay now and forever [focusing on] US relations in the Muslim world … We’re exploring a few different possibilities and may change it up a little bit.” Nevins added of the show’s writers: “They never shied away from anything difficult. Running for the Hills

“When Ya Gotta Go...” By Jann McClary

Muslim Link Contributing Writer In May of 2011, Sister Jann McClary and her husband Tariq moved from the Washington DC metropolitan area to establish a new home in the mountains of Colorado, building it from the ground up as part of their plan to become free of the spiritual and physical stress of modern urban life. Sister Jann is documenting her experiences for the Muslim Link. See her earlier installments at www.muslimlinkpaper.com by searching for “Running for the Hills”. Make sure you select “Exact Phrase” in the search options. – TML

The john. The loo. Water closet. The head. The hamaam. C'mon, we're all adults here, you know what I'm talking about. “Doing your business.” Going to the bathroom. Now, what's the big deal about going to the bathroom? Everybody pretty much goes the same way, in the same place, right? Well, not exactly. The physical mechanics are basically the same. It's the spot where you drop that separates the city from the country. Go into your tiled throne room, do your business, flush, and everything disappears in a noisy little whirlpool down the drain. Flush and forget. You never give a second thought to what happens at the other end of the pipe. Trust me, it's ugly. It's probably toxic unless it's treated. It has to be sifted and sieved, filtered and fumigated, carbonized and chemicalized before it can be redirected to a faucet and reused by you. Yes, your toilet water is recycled. Eww. You've got two additional options if you live in the country. One is a septic tank, which is basically just a big holding tank, with or without a leach field, which spreads your “stuff” further out underground from your house. It's a big expense what with all the digging, pipe laying, graveling and cement pouring that typically makes money go down the drain like you-know-what.

....

Most country dwellers would also like to flush and forget, many of the older generation harboring non-too-fond memories of trips to an outhouse in frigid temperatures. But that was the old days. Now you can ride on down to your friendly county department of health and ask for a septic permit. The friendly department of health clerk will smile at you as she tells you the permit will cost $500. As soon as you pick yourself up off the floor she will hand you the permit application and tell you in a friendly tone that your septic application must be accompanied by a septic plan designed by a licensed septic engineer (yes, they have such things), whose plan must be approved by the county department of health in order for you to get said permit. And we don't want to go into how much

Aside from the financial aspect of it, there's the gross-out factor of what happens when you “go” inside your house. Each time you flush it releases a super-fine spray of water and contaminants into the air and all over your towels, toothbrushes, soap and anything else you've left in the bathroom. Oh, I'm not exaggerating. It's just that the August 2005 issue of the Journal of Applied Microbiology published a study on this stuff and it seems that the more often you flush, the more funky little pathogens dance around in the air, contaminating all your stuff. Yuck. Think about it. You go into an enclosed space, do your business, in standing water, then flush and get microscopic bits of it back on you. None of Allah's creation do their

So that leaves us with the third choice. The sunnah. Neither the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam), nor his wives, nor any of the sahabah answered the call of nature inside a house. In numerous sahih and hasan ahaadith the words “went out”, or “to an open space”, or “to go out” are used. In the famous hadith of Aisha's (radiallahu anha) fitnah over the rumors surrounding her lost necklace, she mentions answering the call of nature “before we had lavatories near to our houses.” (Sahih al Bukhari, Book 59) Sure it's convenient to just walk a few steps, go into the bathroom and do what you gotta do. And if I visit someone who has a toilet in their bathroom, I'm not going to go run outside and look for a bush. But we just built an outhouse, and it's literally 10 steps from the kitchen. It's been dug 10 feet deep so we'll probably be long gone before we need another outhouse. It's an 8x8 building with two, count 'em, two seats! That means no more waiting and doing the “hurry up, gotta go!” dance. With a few more

business in water, with the exception of fish and other water-dwelling critters! I dunno. Maybe they read the study.

Donald Trump Says He Would Be Open to Closing U.S. Mosques to Fight ISIS By Alan Rappeport

would do that, absolutely.”

Donald J. Trump angered Hispanics when he referred to immigrants as criminals and rapists during the kickoff of his campaign in June. This week, he has put American Muslims on edge by suggesting that he would be open to shutting down mosques as president.

Mr. Trump then said that he was not sure about the legality of closing mosques, but that it was c e r t a i n l y something that should be looked at.

Asked on Fox Business Network if the United States should take action to close certain mosques as part of the fight against the Islamic State, as has happened in Britain, Mr. Trump said, “I

“It depends if the mosque is, you know, loaded for bear,” he said. The Council of American-Islamic

Relations, an advocacy group for Muslims, said on Wednesday that Mr. Trump was calling for an infringement on religious freedom. “Donald Trump’s apparent willingness to close down American mosques that he deems ‘extreme’ is totally incompatible with the Constitution and our nation’s cherished principle of religious freedom,” said Robert McCaw, a government affairs manager for the group.

in this country. It’s called Muslims.” Muslims have taken offense to remarks from Mr. Trump and Ben Carson, one of his leading rivals for the nomination, who said he did not think a follower of Islam should be president. For his part, Mr. Trump has said he is concerned about religious extremists, not Muslims generally. “I love the Muslims,” he said in September. “I think they’re great people.”

Mr. Trump drew criticism from Muslim groups last month when he did not rebut a supporter who said: “We have a problem

all of which were eventually dropped when I took a plea to a lesser count. I had to choose between spending up to 30 months in prison and rolling the dice to risk a 45-year sentence. With five kids, and three of them under the age of 10, I took the plea.

Tom Drake — the NSA whistleblower who went through the agency’s chain of command to report its illegal program to spy on American citizens — was thanked for his honesty and hard work by being charged with 10 felonies, including five counts of espionage. The government eventually dropped the charges, but not before Drake had suffered terrible financial, professional, and personal distress.

What is it about whistleblowers that the powers that be can’t stand? When I blew the whistle on the CIA’s illegal torture program, I was derided in many quarters as a traitor. My detractors in the government attacked me for violating my secrecy agreement, even as they ignored the oath we’d all taken to protect and defend the Constitution. All of this happened despite the fact that the torture I helped expose is illegal in the United States. Torture also violates a number of international laws and treaties to which our country is signatory — some of which the United States itself was the driving force in drafting.

This is an ongoing theme, especially in government. Brandon Manning is serving 35 years in prison for her disclosure of State Department and military cable traffic showing American military crimes in Iraq and beyond. And Edward Snowden, who told Americans about the extent to which our government is spying on us, faces life in prison if he ever returns to the country.

I was charged with three counts of espionage,

....

The list goes on and on.

Baltimore Police Department whistleblower Joe Crystal knew what he was getting into when he reported an incident of police brutality to his superiors after witnessing two colleagues brutally beat a suspect. Crystal immediately became known as a “rat cop” and a “snitch.” He finally resigned from the department after receiving credible death threats. It’s not just government employees either. Whistleblowers first brought attention to wrongdoing at Enron, Lehman Brothers, Stanford International Bank, and elsewhere. And what’s their reward? Across the board, whistleblowers are investigated, harassed, fired, and in some cases prosecuted. That’s the conclusion of author Eyal Press, whose book Beautiful Souls: The Courage and Conscience of Ordinary People in Extraordinary Times documents the struggles of whistleblowers throughout history. Press’s whistleblowers never recover financially or professionally from their actions. History seems to smile on them, but during their lifetimes they remain outcasts.

This is a tragedy. Blowing the whistle on wrongdoing should be the norm, not the exception. I recently visited Greece to help the government there draft a whistleblower protection law. The Greek word for “whistleblower” translates as “guardian of the public trust.” I wish our own government’s treatment of whistleblowers could reflect that understanding. Yet even legal guarantees of protection from prosecution and persecution aren’t enough — especially if, as in the case of existing law, national security employees are exempt from these safeguards. Instead, society must start seeing things differently. Like the Greeks, all of us need to start treating whistleblowers as guardians, not traitors. And if we value what freedoms we have left, we should demand that our government do the same. OtherWords columnist John Kiriakou is an associate fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies. >> continued from pg 24

The NYPD’s program was a disturbing example of street level mass surveillance. It treated an entire population as potential terrorists—much like the NSA mass phone surveillance program has treated every phone call as a potential terrorist connection. Perhaps even scarier for ordinary people, this surveillance hit close to home. It was conducted by law enforcement agents on the street, who had the means to physically harass or even arrest any Muslim they wanted to—on the spot. The NYPD program was developed with the help of the CIA. The Demographics Unit, “maintained a long list of ‘ancestries of interest’ and received daily reports on life in Muslim neighborhoods.” Police used informants in cafes, mosques and student groups, photographed businesses and schools, and made maps showing where populations of “ancestries of interest” were concentrated. They did this without any particular suspicion about any of the people or places surveilled. In addition to spending huge amounts of human hours on this surveillance, the NYPD also used street level surveillance technology—something we’ve warned is allowing local law enforcement to mirror the NSA’s mass surveillance much more easily. It’s disturbing to think what the demographics unit would do now, with 2015 technology. But even with the technology available between 2002-2011, when the AP broke the story, the NYPD managed to use automated license plate readers (funded by federal dollars under the guise of fighting drug trafficking) to conduct mass surveillance. The AP reported that “police in unmarked cars outfitted with electronic license plate readers would drive down the street and record the plates of everyone parked near the mosque.” The Fourth Amendment was added to the U.S. Constitution precisely in order to prevent law enforcement from conducting mass, suspicionless investigations under “general warrants” that target no specific person or place and never expire. And ALPR scans (like the rest of the NYPD’s program) look a lot like these general warrants.

Discriminatory surveillance is its own harm

infamous “separate but equal” Plessy decision, where the Supreme Court said “[If] enforced separation of the two races stamps the colored race with a badge of inferiority . . . [,] it is not by reason of anything found in the act, but solely because the colored race chooses to put that construction upon it.”

Much of what both the Third Circuit

Courts have to closely scrutinize

While the district court dismissed the case despite these disturbing parallels— since it believed that the surveillance was harmless—the Third Circuit disagreed.

The AP reported that “police in unmarked cars outfitted with electronic license plate readers would drive down the street and record the plates of everyone parked near the mosque.” and the district court discussed in their opinions was whether the plaintiffs had standing (the legal right) to sue. The lower court dismissed Hassan partly because it said that the plaintiffs hadn’t shown any injury, comparing it to “[a]llegations of a subjective chill” in another case. But what’s more dangerous, the district court agreed with the City when it argued that “[e] ven if Plaintiffs had an injury in fact… the Associated Press and not the City is the manifest cause of Plaintiffs’ alleged injuries.” The City argues that the plaintiffs would’ve been fine if they’d never known about the city’s extensive surveillance. The ramifications of this theory for lawsuits like Hassan, where the media and whistleblowers reveal surveillance overreach, are disturbing to say the least. Fortunately, the Third Circuit tore these arguments apart easily when it held that discriminatory surveillance alone was enough to "get in the courthouse door": In short, [the City] argues, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you. And, if you do know, don’t shoot us. Shoot the messenger.”…The City’s argument is legally untenable because (to repeat) the discrimination itself is the legally cognizable injury. In fact, the Third Circuit compared this attitude to the one displayed in the now

religious discrimination The district court said that plaintiffs hadn’t pled enough facts for their case to go forward at all, and didn’t comment on the appropriate constitutional standard the NYPD program should be examined under—but the Third Circuit did. And it’s a question the Supreme Court has never definitively decided, so the answer could affect similar lawsuits against surveillance based on religion in the future. The Third Circuit determined that, as an essentially immutable characteristic closely associated with inequality, government practices or laws based on religion should be treated as a “suspect classification” and the government’s reasons should be subjected to heightened scrutiny. In contrast, where the government does not use a suspect classification, it just needs to have a rational basis for the policy.1 In the case of a religious classification, the court explained, a rational reason isn’t good enough. Instead, because religion is an immutable characteristic, courts must look more closely at the purpose of the governmental policy in question. Although the court doesn’t answer how closely the policy should be scrutinized, rational basis isn’t good enough. The court also made it clear that national

security as a purpose for a policy doesn’t trump rights, despite what the government seems to think: No matter how tempting it might be to do otherwise, we must apply the same rigorous standards even where national security is at stake. We have learned from experience that it is often where the asserted interest appears most compelling that we must be most vigilant in protecting constitutional rights. We’ve got a lot to learn from the surveillance of Muslims in America Executive Director of the Center for Media Justice Malkia Cyril has said of the state of surveillance, “we have some new technology doing some very old work.” The “old work” is the work of controlling the movements and activities of minorities—like the passes AfricanAmericans had to carry just to move around in public in the 1700s. And as the court recognizes, we are in very real danger of repeating history. The Third Circuit’s decision pointed out that when it happened, the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II, the targeting of civil rights leaders by the FBI during the 60s and 70s, and the public trials and surveillance of perceived communists during the Red Scare were all considered appropriate responses to national security threats: Given that unconditional deference to [the] government’s invocation of “emergency” has a lamentable place in our history, the past should not preface yet again bending our constitutional principles merely because an interest in national security is invoked. Hindsight is 20/20. But we shouldn’t have to wait to find out that the FBI has tried to convince a civil rights leader like Martin Luther King Jr. to commit suicide to stop government overreach. It is exactly because of the risk of government repression that we have constitutional protections. Without them, as Cyril points out, "the 21st century will supplement 1963’s informants with 2016’s facial recognition software." The Third Circuit has placed the NYPD's surveillance in its proper place, in the context of our history. For us not to fall into tyranny, we must never forget that history.

Washington Plans Up to $1 Billion Hike in Military Aid to Israel By Gili Cohen

Haaretz, Oct. 21, 2015 Israeli and American teams are putting together a plan to increase annual U.S. military aid to Israel by as much as $1 billion, on top of the current $3.1 billion, a source close to the military aid process said Wednesday. Talks on military aid started recently, and are now being discussed by the professional staffs of the two countries’ defense establishments. For now, Israeli defense officials are calling news of the large aid increase “rumors.”

Israel refused to hold talks on the military aid framework and the “compensation package” it will receive because of the Iranian nuclear agreement, until that agreement was approved. A senior defense official said that because the Iranian nuclear agreement would require the arming of various Arab countries, particularly the Gulf states, “an answer for preserving [Israel’s] qualitative military edge was required — and everyone is aware of this.” The Israeli decision to wait until the final approval of the Iranian nuclear agreement was not well received in the

Obama administration, which saw the postponing of the talks as a waste of time in improving Israel’s defensive capabilities with the American aid. The agreement on U.S. military aid to Israel allows Israel to purchase weapons as well as other equipment and supplies, such as fuel. Among the items included are F-35 airplanes. A significant increase in this aid would allow Israel to also buy V-22 tilt rotor aircraft, a deal agreed to last year but postponed due to shortage of funds. The V-22 deal is estimated at a cost of $1.3 billion.

with the cumulative sum now standing at about $100 billion. Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon is scheduled to visit the United States at the beginning of next week for what is described as a “work trip.” He will meet with his U.S. counterpart Defense Secretary Ashton Carter. American military aid is expected to be a main topic of their meeting. Ya’alon’s visit was scheduled a long time ago, but because of the present security situation it was cut short by two days.

U.S. military aid to Israel began in 1962,

"Rely On Allah, and Do Not Give Up..." By Sheikh Salman al-Oadah IslamToday.net, 10/10/2015

Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam said: “Strive for what benefits you and rely on Allah, and do not give up. If something befalls you, do not say: ‘If I had only done such and such.’ Instead say: ‘It is as Allah decreed and He does what He pleases’.” [Sahīh Muslim] When Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam said: “Strive for what benefits you…” he was encouraging us to hasten in seizing the positive opportunities that come our way. When he added: “… and rely on Allah…”, he was showing us that we should draw upon our faith in order to strengthen ourselves in our efforts. This is why the Prophet did not stop there. He continued by saying: “… and do not give up.” How can anyone give up on the fuel of one’s spirit and the embers of one’s faith? Finally, he concluded by saying: “If something befalls you, do not say: ‘If I had only done such and such.’ Instead say: ‘It is as Allah decreed and He does what He pleases’.” [Sahīh Muslim] Faith is not blind, nor is it a form of resignation and a denial of our great human potential. It does not mean we should spend our time lamenting in the ruins of the past and reject change. Instead, faith is our certainty that good is wherever Allah places it, and that every day you bring forth a new dream, a new hope, and a new success. A young man once asked me about a book entitled The Secret by Australian author Rhonda Byrne. His question compelled me to buy it and read it. I took it with me and read it on some of my travels. It presents the idea that we must encourage ourselves to be optimistic, proactive, and

believe that what we want can happen; indeed that it will be reality as soon as we utter it, believe it in our hearts, and rid ourselves of our pessimistic thoughts. People have to focus their minds and thinking on what they want and what must be, instead of on what they fear and detest. This idea reminded me of something that Ibn al-Qayyim said: “If a servant relies on Allah as He out to be relied upon regarding moving a mountain off its base, then if that person is required to move a mountain, he will do so.”

The expectations being referred to here pertain to this world as well the Hereafter. Good thoughts lead to good actions and good expectations lead to productive work. When we want to take hold of a new idea, we do not want to undermine it by over-thinking it, dissecting it, and qualifying it with exceptions. If we do that, it will sputter away and die. Once the idea is firmly in mind, it becomes easier to modify it and improve upon it. The second new idea she introduces is expressed in the hadīth where the Prophet

Ibn al-Qayyim said: “If a servant relies on Allah as He ought to be relied upon regarding moving a mountain off its base, then if that person is required to move a mountain, he will do so.”

I found that the basic idea of The Secret is one that we need to instil in ourselves, without dissipating its spirit by debating its finer details. This is because the book’s basic idea is in reality one of the prime motivators for productive work and fortitude. She says hundreds of things in her book trying to explain the detailed implications and patterns of her ideas, but they really introduce only two or three new concepts. One of these concepts is reflected in something Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam quotes his Lord as saying: “I am as my servant thinks of Me, so think of Me how you wish.” In some narrations, it continues: “If he thinks well of Me, it is for his benefit, and if he thinks ill of Me, it is to his detriment.”

said: “When you beseech Allah, you should be certain that He will answer.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhī] What this means is that when we call upon Allah in prayer, we should know in our hearts that He will answer us. We should not supplicate with an attitude of experimentation or with feelings of doubt and skepticism. `Umar used to say: “I do not worry about my prayers being answered, but about what I am going to pray for, because if I pray for something, its answer comes with it.” These are among `Umar’s many inspired words. He is not only referring to deciding what to say in his supplications, which is

in itself a good and blessed concern; he is speaking about something more profound: the need for our hearts and minds to have full trust in Allah and His promise. Allah says: “Call upon me; I will answer you.” [Sūrah Ghāfir: 60] And He says: “Who is it that answers the one in need when he calls out?” [Sūrah al-Naml: 62] And He says: “When my servant asks you about me, I am near. I answer the supplications of those who beseech me.” [Sūrah al-Baqarah: 186] Dark thoughts are enough to hurl us into dark places, as dank and stifling as we can imagine. It is as is we are hastening on death with our pessimistic thoughts. It is no surprise that pessimistic people in their psychological isolation, often appeal for death to hasten itself, and they lash out those who prevent them from attaining the only “relief” they can see in their lives. The Prophet was once asked: “Who are the best people?” He replied: “Those who live long and do the best deeds.” [Sunan al-Tirmidhī] He also said: “None of you should ever wish for death. Never pray for it before it comes to you of its own accord. When you die, your deeds come to an end, and a believer’s life is never prolonged except for good.” [Sahīh al-Bukhārī and Sahīh Muslim] Life is a blessing which Allah bestows upon the living. It was the Prophet’s habit that when he woke up, he would thank Allah and say: “Praise be to Allah who revived us after causing us to die and to Him is the final gathering.” [Sahīh alBukhārī and Sahīh Muslim] The Prophet’s guidance is not just a provision for the next life, but for this one as well. Using Recording Devices to Spy on Family Members Question: I have many brothers and sisters, so I use a telephone recording device to protect against wrongdoing and mischief. What do you think of this? Praise be to Allaah. This question was put to Shaykh Muhammad ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) and he said: I think that this is a kind of spying and it is not permissible for anyone to spy on anyone else, because we have no right the judge anybody except by what is apparent. If we ....

start spying on people we will have a lot of headaches because of this spying and we will be upset by what we hear and see. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning) “And spy not” [al-Hujuraat 49:12] after saying (interpretation of the meaning), “O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion; indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not” [al-Hujuraat 49:12]. But if the head of the household sees indications of these evil telephone calls, then there is nothing wrong

with setting up a recording device without their knowledge, but he realizes that there is something going on, he should not keep quiet and keep listening, rather he should rebuke them straightaway, because if he communities to listen, because he may hear something that will upset him even more. For example, if he comes across a bad telephone conversation, he must rebuke the one who is doing it straight away, and not delay it until the next day; he must put a stop to it from the beginning.

But with regard to mere suspicion based on waswaas (insinuating whispers of the Shaytaan), it is not permitted (for him to set up this device), but if he knows that the matter is serious and that it is actually happening, then it is OK to set up a recorder so as to find out what is going on. Somalia. “This outrageous explosion of watchlisting — of monitoring people and racking and stacking them on lists, assigning them numbers, assigning them ‘baseball cards,’ assigning them death sentences without notice, on a worldwide battlefield — it was, from the very first instance, wrong,” said the whistle-blower. “An educational institution [run by taxpayer money] like the Smithsonian Museum should have also given the human rights perspective, if they had invited the military perspective,” said Benjamin, as security gathered to closely watch the protest.

Drones makes it easier for the US to get involved in conflicts with countries that we are not at war with, says Benjamin, who has written several books on drone warfare.

The protest included a die-in, where protesters covered in blood stained sheets lay on the ground, simulating being dead— representing the thousands of innocents who have died from a missile falling from the sky. Mothers with young children as well as men in suits walked into the door of the museum to attend the talk, ignoring the protesters. Jeremy Scahill writes in the Intercept that “the secret documents lead to the conclusion that Washington’s 14year high-value targeting campaign suffers from an over reliance on signals intelligence, an apparently incalculable civilian toll, and — due to a preference for assassination rather than capture — an inability to extract potentially valuable intelligence from terror suspects.”

“For years, we at CODEPINK have claimed that killer drones are used to murder people without even knowing who they are and now we have proof that 88 percent of those killed are not the intended targets,” said Benjamin. “The terror the killer drones have wrought has spread anti-American sentiment throughout the world, and their use has created a state of perpetual war with minimal transparency and accountability.”

“For years, we at CODEPINK have claimed that killer drones are used to murder people without even knowing who they are and now [with the leaked documents] we have proof that 88 percent of those killed are not the intended targets,” said Benjamin.

“Killer drones have murdered thousands of innocent people in Pakistan, Ye m e n , I r a q , and Afghanistan. The terror they have wrought has spread antiAmerican sentiment throughout the world, and their use has created a state of perpetual war with minimal transparency and a c c o u n t a b i l i t y, ” say activists from CODEPINK.

CODEPINK agrees with Edward Snowden, who hailed the new whistle-blower, tweeting “In an astonishing act of civil courage, one American just shattered an unspeakable lie.”

The Best Jihad: Striving Against One's Desires From Al-'Ala ibn Ziyad who said: A man asked 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn al-'As, saying: Which of the Believers is best in his Islam? He replied: "He from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe." He asked: Then what is the best Jihad? He replied: "He who strives against his own self and desires for Allah." He asked: Then which of those who migrates (performs hijrah) is best? He replied: "He who strives against his own self and desires for Allah." He asked: Is it something you have said O 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr, or Allah's Messenger (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam)? He said: "Rather Allah's Messenger (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said it." Reported by Ibn Nasr al-Marwazi in Ta'zim Qadris Salat (no. 639) So striving against ones own self is one of the highest and most valuable means of increasing ones eeman and causing the servant to draw closer to his Lord, the One free of all imperfections. Concerning this He the Blessed and Most High says: "As for those who strive hard in Us (Our Cause), We will surely guide them to Our Paths (i.e. Allah's Religion)." Al-Qur'an 29:69 So a Muslim's striving against his own self and his desires causes his spirit to rise higher, his iman to increase and his soul to become purified. Furthermore this striving crowns the Muslim with a very great crown worn in his life,

NOW ENROLLING for the 2015-2016 School Year!! Pre-School & Child Day Learning Center From Jabir (radhiallahu 'anhu) who said that Allah's Messenger (sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Do not acquire knowledge in order to compete with the scholars, nor to argue with the ignorant, nor to gain mastery over the gatherings. Since whoever does that, then: The Fire! The Fire!" Consider, may Allah have mercy on you, the admonition and the lesson contained in what Ibn Abi Haatim ar-Razi narrates, he said: I entered into Damascus upon the students of hadith and I passed by the circle of Qasim al-Ju'i. I found a group sitting around him and he was speaking. Their appearance amazed me and I heard him saying: "Seize the benefit of five things from the people of your time: when you are present you are not known; when you are absent you are not missed; when you are seen your advice is not sought; when you say something your saying is not accepted; and when you have some knowledge you are not given anything for it. I also advise you with five things: when you are treated unjustly then do not behave unjustly; when you are praised then do not become happy; when you are criticised do not be upset; when you are not believed then do not become angry; and if they act deceitfully towards you do not act deceitfully towards them." Ibn Abi Hatim said: So I took that as my benefit from Damascus. ....

stop genocide of Muslims In Burma Before

After

Out of the 5 million Muslims in Burma only 3 million are left. They cannot hold a job, enter the masjid, go to school, marry, or have children although Rohingyas are indigenous people living in their ancestral lands in Burma. This is the reason 7 Nobel Laureates have declared it a genocide!

Give 10 Minutes a Day To Stop Genocide

The satellite images above by Human Rights Watch show the destruction of homes and property in the Rohingya Muslim area of Kyauk Pyu. There are many towns like that. The Impact of our United Efforts and Phone Calls 1) The US Congress passed H.Res. 418 supporting Rohingyas. 2) At least 3 attacks on Muslims in Burma have been stopped. 3) The US has re-imposed some of the restrictions on aid to Burma this January. 4) Media is no longer dismissing it as a conflict between the two communities. A whole lot of work must be done to stop this genocide. Burmese Muslims have asked us to put pressure on their government to protect them. We are counting on your generosity to do this work professionally.
