They decided to spend an already packed Ramadan sharing iftar with underprivileged Muslims in and around Baltimore City. But this wouldn't be a one time service – it would last the entire month, every iftar. With three Muslim women shel-

Community News Family, Friends Walk In Fairfax for Comatose 24-Year Old with the Muslim Link,“even while he was in surgery, we had a social worker calling my father about transferring him to a nursing facility.”
By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff A Northern Virginia man, 24-year-old Leeban was critically injured in a terrible accident in January, 2013 after he apparently fell three stories in Rochester, MN. He was rushed to the hospital where he went through emergency surgery, but his injuries left him severely brain damaged, in a coma. A brother to six sisters and his mother’s youngest, he was studying marketing in college in Rochester. The investigation into his death is still open. Leeban, known as Lee, attended Annandale High School in Virginia. His sisters describe him as a caring, patient, dependable brother. A ‘friendly giant’, he loved playing basketball and football. “He has a way of effortlessly bringing people together with his infectious smile and laugh,” says his sister, Ubah.
Lee’s mother left her job as a translator in Virginia and lived with her comatose son for five months in the hospital. She was the sole caregiver for her elderly mother who she left behind. The family attends Dar Al Hijrah Islamic Center in Falls Church. She wanted to bring Lee home so she can continue to take care of her son and her mother. In an interview with Somali Public Ra-
dio she mentioned that she has learned so much about the healthcare system through her experiences with Lee. She pleaded with the Minnesota Somali community to visit the countless Somali young men and boys, who are in hospitals and struggle alone without any visitors. “Lee had insurance but private insurance only pays for what is absolutely necessary,” says Ubah in an interview
Expenses of traumatic brain injury (TBI) were beyond what insurance covers. Options for those who cannot afford it are extremely limited, which of course decreases the quality of care needed. Physical, speech and occupational therapy are all not covered. Family and friends of Leeban held a successful 5K Walk at Lake Fairfax Park on Sunday, May 19, 2013 to bring Leeban home to Virginia. The man’s plight, who friends describe as soft hearted, pulled in walkers from Lee’s high school, childhood friends, and others from DC, VA, NYC and as far away as Ohio. The family declared on Thursday, June 6, 2013 that they had raised enough money to fly Leeban home and announced that he will arrive home the following week. >> walk Pg 22
Break-In Hampers Muslim Youth Program In SE DC By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff Reporter "Them Muslims changed my kid. I am not Muslim but Allah sent them. 3 men into my house. So powerful they were, I could see his shoulders dropping. He was out of control. At 13, taking to drugs, no school wanted him, no program would accept him. Now he is going to go to National Collegian Prep School,” exclaimed Ms. Mooney. "I am devastated, thieves broke into their office and stole the computers,
laptops and the Wii. This was his safe place to go. They accepted him in their football program, the Benning Terrace Soldiers." A break-in at the office of the Benning Terrace Youth Empowerment Initiative leaves coaches, staff and kids upset. Michael Toland is the President, serves as a coach and mentors at-risk youths in the Benning Terrace public housing development in Washington, D.C. Thieves took the cameras, the DVD player, audio-visual equipment, a couple of laptops, and a Wii game system.
“This is where we hold our anger management, teen issues, and Islamic studies sessions,” says Toland. This theft is especially damaging as grassroots programs such as the Benning Terrace Soldiers in Washington, D.C., have helped youth growing up in extremely challenging environments but these programs often lack the funding to meet their community’s overwhelming needs. The community football program started in 1999 and serves youth ages 5 to 15. Benning Terrace Soldiers, as the team in known, has helped thousands of
youth. Each season upto five teams play and each team has 25-30 kids. The last break-in was in 2010 when the office was vandalized and team uniforms were destroyed. ”We use the DVD player for videos for our all our classes, the cameras are used during games. “We take pictures of the kids playing games, receiving trophies,” decried Toland. Home of the Heart Cruise a Much Needed Getaway for Muslims By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff Reporter On a balmy Sunday in June, as yachts glide down the Potomac River, Mrs. Shaikh and her husband are among the 400 guests on board the Home of the Heart Lunch Cruise. Seated in the couple section on vintage furniture on the second level of the deck, they have taken time off for a date, while supporting a good cause. Married for more than 25 years, with three grown children, these empty nesters are enjoying a day together. The sold out two decks of the cruise ship Spirit of Washington departs from Pier 4 at 6th and Water Streets, with a dua for travelling recited by Imam Safi Khan echoing through the intercom, as the Washington Monument-- going through renovations-- looms through the window of the banquet decks. The sisters’ line at the buffet is very long
and cramped. Mr. Shaikh goes back into the men’s line and chivalrously makes his wife a plate of herb-infused rotisserie halal chicken, with extra medley of locally sourced seasonal steamed vegetables. They text their kids, giving them updates, as they pass General’s Row, a prime waterfront property on Fort McNair; U.S. Army generals live here with their families while they make their home in DC. Since the furniture is very close together, they chat with the couple seated next to them. The fundraising for the Home of the Heart campaign is kept at a minimum. The team from Dar us Salam give an update on the property in Howard County and show a promotional video of the new campus but do not conduct any active fundraising. After the lunch, the atmosphere is Eidesque; people who haven’t seen each other for ages meet and catch up with

ICM Raises $87K, Hopes for Building Permit Soon By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff Reporter ICM (Islamic Center of Maryland) held its annual Ramadan fundraiser at Bohrer Park in Germantown, MD on Saturday, July 13th to raise money for their building expansion project. The event drew in a crowd of close to 200 community members that were eager to take part in the masjid’s efforts. The youth of ICM began the event, giving a presentation about how much the masjid has impacted their lives, and how much they believe it is important for Muslim youth to have a center like ICM that connects them to their faith. Members of ICM’s board of trustees

then went over what the new building will include. The completed building will be over 45,000 square feet, one of the largest in the area, and will have classrooms for the full time school ICM plans to open. A gymnasium, commercial kitchen, library, health clinic, food bank, daycare, conference hall and media room will also be included in the building. The new building will allow ICM to accommodate for a bigger congregation and hold bigger and better community events. The masjid has been planning their expansion for years; however, the wheels were finally set into motion in early 2008, and in April 2013 ICM began to clear the lot behind their masjid to use for various recreational and educational
activities. ICM’s master plan requires close to $9 million, out of which they have raised $2.7 million. The masjid’s building permit is being evaluated by the county, but ICM’s board of trustees hopes that they will obtain their permit in the next couple of months and begin building their new masjid. Yaseen Shaikh, Imam of ISB (Islamic Society of Baltimore) conducted the fundraiser on behalf of ICM. Shaikh told the story of Salman Farsi, a young man that went great lengths to find faith before converting to Islam and becoming a companion on the Prophet Muhammad PBUH. Shaikh’s story connected back to the group of people ICM
is expanding their masjid for: the youth. ICM believes that it is very important for masajid to be youth oriented to support the young Muslims that are slowly losing ties with Islam. The masjid hopes that their new masjid will provide the Muslim youth in the area with a foundation of Islam that will keep them connected with their faith. Over $87,000 were raised that night. Iftar, Maghrib and dinner followed the fundraiser; guests helped themselves to food catered by Eastern Kabob House. ICM is thankful for such successful event made possible by the support of the community. The efforts of the Gaithersburg area Muslims are bringing ICM closer and closer to their goal.

After Massive ISB Iftar Fundraiser, Leaders Ponder Management Strategies By Hena Zuberi
Muslim Link Staff Reporter The Islamic Society of Baltimore, located in Woodlawn, MD, is the iconic masjid with the stain-glass windows etched with the ninety-nine names of Allah. Home of one of the largest Muslim communities in the DC Metro area, ISB is looking to the future and expansion plays a large part in its vision. On July 27th, 2013, ISB held its Annual Benefit iftar and dinner to support the educational and social services of the center. The Community Learning Center with expanded library, a separate
sister’s entrance, additional classrooms, and renovation of the original bathrooms and part of the roof are on the list. With 75 huffaz that have graduated from the Al Rahmah Quran academy and are leading taraweeh all over Maryland, the next step for ISB is the establishment of the Al Rahmah Seminary. ISB’s newest resident scholar Shaykh Yaseen, and council members Rehan Alavi, Hassan Hammad and Dr. Maqbool Patel addressed the crowd. Visiting from Arlington, TX, Shaykh Mohammed Shakir conducted the fundraising. “We have a steady stream of young families flowing into the area,” said the ISB President, Mohammad Ab-

Manassas Muslims Look at $3.5M Property As New 10-Acre Home
Young Manassas Imam Is All About Youth
By Hena Zuberi
The Muslim Link interviews Mufti Asif Iqbal, the imam of Manassas Muslim Association. In his thirties, Imam Iqbal has been the imam of MMA since 2004.
Muslim Link Staff Reporter Established in 2004, the Manassas Muslim Association is in search of a permanent home. MMA was one of the original Muslim organizations, which started with a musalla at Maximum Deals, in the independent city of Manassas Park. It is a growing community and several other Islamic centers have been established in the vicinity since then.
Where did you study? I did my hifdh (memorization of Quran) in New Orleans, they used to have a madrassah there. Then I went to Dar ul Uloom Madani in Buffalo, New York to get my ‘alim degree. From there I went to Hyderabad, India to Al Mahad Ul Aliyah al Islami to do my ifta course. In 2004 I started my tenure here at MMA. I grew up in Baltimore, MD but I was hardly home as I was away at school. I commuted from Baltimore for a few years as my father was in a coma. He passed away in Dec 2005 and then I moved here to Manassas. I have led salah at Islamic Society of Baltimore, they know me quite well.
In 2007, MMA moved to a musallah at Prince Williams Automotive facility. Muneer Baig has been involved in the association since the inception. Hopping around from musallah to musallah has had an adverse affect on membership, says Baig. The need for an address is dire. “Right now we don’t have adequate parking or space, which is inconvenient for worshippers,” he says. MMA purchased ten acres of land for $400,000 in 2009 with an intention to build a community center and masjid on it. They paid off the property as all operational costs until 2010 were covered by locally owned Muslim businesses and all donations went towards the purchase of the property. However, the cost of leveling the land and constructing from scratch was too formidable a task for the community. Prompted by the need to find a permanent address, the shurah shifted gears and started looking for a property with a standing structure. They believe they have found it. A $ 3.5 million parcel of land located in Manassas Park. It is ten acres of developable land, with a 8600 sqft. building and 150 parking spaces. The property has a 3500 sq ft. hall they would like to make into a main prayer hall and another 3200 sq ft. hall that could be used as a daycare and/ or an elementary school. as a way of growing as people and as Muslims through whatever competitions we are involved in,” said Amina Iro. In comparison to the regional competition where schools have rivalries, MIST Nationals is a lot more relaxed and friendly. The various DC teams that attend Nationals band together to represent their region as best they can.
Muslim Link Staff Reporter Maryland, DC and Virginia students faced off against some of the brightest youth of the nation at MIST (Muslim Interscholastic Tournament) Nationals held this year in Detroit the first weekend of July. DC previously won MIST Nationals in 2010 and 2011, but lost the first place title to the NY team this year by a mere margin of 2 points, despite NY’s team having almost 50 more competitors than the DC team. Most competitors purchased a package through DC MIST that bought them a ticket for the University of Maryland coach busses that took them to Detroit, as well as a hotel room. For some competitors, MIST Nationals doubled as a vacation, and they drove to the competition with their friends and family. MIST began in Texas in 2002, founded by a high school student who wanted to have a way to bring together high schoolers. MIST’s main objective is to promote creativity and leadership. Contestants learn how much MIST has helped them once they’re done competing. “One really starts to notice the value of MIST, the lasting bonds its cultivates, and the fact that the time has now come to hone in on the abilities discovered at MIST and exert them towards purposes far greater than simply competing against other talent, to grow up in a sense,” said Naeem Baig, a long time competitor from DC that won first in the overall individual awards. The awards ceremony is all nerves and excitement for the competitors, it’s the time for them to cheer on their teammates and find out how well their hard work paid off. DC’s efforts paid off in the end, they’d solidified their place as the undisputed region, and have their eyes set on first place for next year.

Math Teacher Running for VA House of Delegates Atif Qarni, a father and teacher, is running for Virginia House of Delegates from the 13th District. Atif graduated from George Washington University and went on to receive his Master’s degree and teaching certificate from George Mason. Qarni now teaches 8th grade math at Beville Middle School in Dale City. He has served as a youth league football and soccer coach, track & field coach at Beville Middle School and also teaches GED classes in the evening. Atif lives in Manassas with his wife, Fatima, and two sons, Zane and Saber. He has lived in Manassas since 2005. As a teacher, a parent and a longtime resident of Prince William County, he is focused on the issues most important to families and businesses in his community: quality education, improving transportation, and revitalizing the local economy. Here is an interview Qa-
rni did with the Muslim Link. What inspired you to run for office and how has the process been so far? I was inspired to run for office because I saw that my community and our schools were not getting the support they needed. Local businesses have been hurt by the increasing traffic and congestion. Class sizes have continued to grow while resources have continued to decrease over the last few years. I have been committed to service throughout my life. After graduating from high school I joined the Marines. I was deployed to Iraq in 2003 while my wife was pregnant with our first child and was one of the first to enter into Baghdad. For the last five years I have served as a teacher, including the past four years as an 8th grade math teacher. Instead of just complaining about how things were, I decided to continue my service by running for the Virginia

August 9th - September 12th 2013 House of Delegates. The process has been excellent so far. My family has been very supportive and actively helpful. I also spoke with my local Democratic committee people and they were supportive. They really liked my background as a Marine and a teacher. It seems like every day we are gaining more support and momentum for people in and around the community. What issues are you running on? I am running to focus on the issues that matter like transportation, education, and jobs and economic growth. I want to work to help reduce traffic and congestion, create good paying jobs, and make sure our schools are the best they can be.
COMMUNITY NEWS | 15 I have received incredible support from the Democratic Party. They have provided me with financial, strategic, and personnel resources. They see the district numbers and the work we are doing on a daily basis and know that we have a great chance to win this seat. What advice would you give to others aiming to run for office? I would tell others that are aiming to run for office that it is a great and rewarding experience. Don’t worry if there are people who think you can’t do it. As
long as you have a good support system in place and are willing to put in the long hours and hard work, you go for it. We can only change our community for the better by doing. That being said, not everyone needs to run for office to create change. The most important thing we can do is get involved. We must educate ourselves on what is happening and hold our elected officials accountable. Whether you decide to run for office, volunteer on a campaign, or just vote, it is important to be actively involved in the democratic process.
Finally, why should the people of District 13 vote for you? The people of District 13 should vote for me because as a Marine and teacher I have a commitment to service. I want to continue serving and focusing on the issues that are affecting all of us. My opponent has an extreme right wing agenda which vilifies women, minorities and others. I am inclusive of everyone and will work hard to move my district and Virginia forward.
How involved are you in the community in Manassas, VA? I am very involved in my community and have been ever since we moved here nine years ago. My wife and sons enjoy going to local restaurants and use local car shops as well as other repair and service companies. For the last several years I have also been a youth football coach and coached my son’s soccer teams. I take a lot of pride in Manassas and I want to keep it family friendly and a desirable destination for others. The incumbent who you are running against is well-rooted in the district, how are you planning for a victory? This district actually changed a lot with redistricting in 2011. While my opponent has been in office for a long time, he has only served this district for one term. This district became much more favorable in 2011 and this year we have the resources and hard work to win. President Obama won this district with 55% of the vote. I am knocking on doors and talking to voters every day. We have a dedicated team of volunteers from around the area. I believe the continued support from different people and organizations, the hard work we are putting in on the ground, and the changing demographics of the district will all play a huge role in putting us in a good position to win. What kind of support have you received from the Democratic Party?

Youth Deliver On the Blessings
Maryland Youth Bring Meals to the Needy Every Day of Ramadan The newly formed Muslim Youth of Maryland got together earlier this year and decided they wanted their first service project to be big. They decided to spend an already
packed Ramadan sharing iftar with underprivileged Muslims in and around Baltimore City. But this wouldn't be a one time service – it would last the entire month, every iftar.
With three Muslim women shelters in Baltimore City and four masajid including Masjid Saffat, Haqq, Tauhid as well as the North Charles Street musalla all received hot iftar dinners from the college-age activists from MYMD.
A reporter from the Muslim Link accompanied them on one of their delivery runs and documented the experience for our readers.
The Muslim Youth of Maryland drive in behind me with hot trays of iftar dinner, dates, fresh fruit, bought at cost from local Muslim business. They have been delivering iftar everyday to shelters and inner city masajid for their Ramadan campaign. MYMD had hosted fundraiser a few weeks earlier and raised $30,000 to deliver iftar to shelters and masajid in Baltimore and Baltimore City. Shaykh Yaseen of Islamic Society of Baltimore was the keynote speaker. MYMD members Muhammad Shiraz and Ahmed Javaid unload the car. Down the street from the convention center, Orioles Park, past Jimmy Johns Gourmet Sandwiches and the Hilton Hotel, the streets full of cheering Ravens fans and tourists change flavors at every block. El Salvadorian soccer fans color the street with festive slogans, and then proud Black-owned business signs hang on many stores as young men sell stuff on the sidewalks. Driving down the not so charming parts of Charm City Baltimore, there is an eerie silence, then sounds of gunfire, screaming, scuffles. We are in the heart of Baltimore. Someone knocks on my window and says 'Assalam alaykum'. I circle around the block of Saratoga Street looking for Masjid Us Salam. A magnificent exterior of brass of the stately former Provident Savings Bank, built circa 1906, is the house of Allah, close to the Lexington Market. It has served as a commuter station in the 40’s. The landmark building was designed by Joseph Evans Sperry to suggest an old treasure chest.
....
<< As we entered through the heavy wooden doors, the smell hit us. Three bins gathered the dripping water as the musallis prayed on the wet carpet, worried about the state of the roof. “Islam is spreading so fast,” says Mufti Hamid of Masjid Fatima. In 2008 this masjid had many great plans but lack of funding and steady leadership has resulted in the reigns of Masjid us Salam to be handed over to Masjid Fatima. “They need help running and building out this place. We want to make this into a hostel for new Muslims, where they can have a place to eat, sleep and learn,” said Hamid. They plan to make a center where we can train imams so they can lead their own communities. A soup kitchen is in the works as is a reentry program for ex-prisoners in this kitchen. A library and Islamic Museum is also planned for this huge, historic building.

A small store on the left side run by Br. Rasheed, who also acts as security for the masjid. is the only financial support that this masjid has right now. The building is lease to own and has been declared a preserved building by the city. Abdul Aliyy has been attending the masjid for the past 10 years, he says that one of the main problems they face is people who claim to be Muslim doing criminal acts on the corner behind the masjid. “We take a walk up here, when they come down,” says Abdul-Aliyy.
Naseema* needs a Sunday school teacher, she and her friends and their moms want to learn about Islam but some of them cannot afford Sunday school class. Her sisters run around the musallah with the young part-time imam’s kids, who takes the extra food and stores it. “For four years we have not had any women come to teach us Islam, sometimes we cannot open the door and we can’t hear the imam” says a sister who is an integral part of the community.
ADVERTISEMENT | 17 Next stop was the Bait Allah Masjid of Baltimore. A this multi-ethnic masjid, I met *Amina, a great grandmother who is taking care of her great grandchild, she doesn't know where her granddaughter is. We spoke about her pending divorce from a Muslim husband who has a sexual addiction and has not found the help he needs, as the masjid can barely afford to keep the lights on let alone hire a social worker or counselor. “It would be a great benefit if a counselor could come and volunteer some time; we really need it,” says Amina. She is on the road to become a licensed social worker because it is badly needed. “When people see us Muslims and they think we are perfect but we are human.” She is been a part of the neighborhood for the past 26 years. She is out of work because of an injury, a Muslim since 1995. “I knew I was going to be a Muslim since I was a little girl. I like to advocate for the women because we carry and do so much, we run single parent homes,” says Amina.
The final stop was a tiny gem of a masjid located in a section of Baltimore City that looked like a war-torn section from an underdeveloped country. Exquisitely clean and decorated with love worthy of a House of Allah. An entryway, a small prayer and immaculately kept bathrooms. It is full of history, the womb of the many masajid that sprung up around Baltimore, and runs the Islamic Community School, the longest continuous running Islamic school in the country founded in 1977.

MCC Ramadan Fundraiser Packed for Expansion By Hena Zuberi, Muslim Link Staff Reporter The Ramadan moon shone bright above the navy and white striped tents on lawns of the Muslim Community Center as worshippers filled up the main masjid and spilled over in the tents. The Muslim Community Center’s fundraising dinner held on July 20th, 2013 was packed, all 300 seats were filled and the $244,000 were raised. No frills, no fuss, a simple iftar and dinner defined the annual Ramadan fundraiser, this year aimed at paying for a major extension to the masjid, expanded wudu facilities, and additional classrooms. The game plan used was to divide the funding of the extension into 135 prayers spots for sisters. Each of these prayer spot were offered for sponsorship for $2,000. Similarly, each of the four large glass doors were up for grabs for $3,500 apiece. “Just think that every time somebody opens the door and steps inside the Masjid, In sha Allah your blessings will start and keep going! The return on investment never stops,” read an email sent out to the community. Sh. Mohamed Abdullahi, the Imam of MCC, hosted the event. The fundraising started at 8:00pm and before iftar a large percentage of the target of $300,000 was achieved. Many donors sponsored prayer spaces on behalf of their parents. Without begging or guilt-tripping the community, the imam reminded them of the benefits of donating, especially in Ramadan, and thanked past major donors and their families. Even though there were not many young professionals amongst the guests, fundraising committee head Akhtar Zubairi said he was pleasantly surprised by their participation; many had reached out to him and the imam privately and sponsored prayer spaces. Zubairi said the doors went quickly, in two days. Some sisters pooled money and sponsored a door, while other donors dropped the whole amount. The largest donation collected that night

the Girl Scouts troop were noted for their achievements. “It’s a very welcoming masjid,” commented Sr. Saba as she ate a sumptuous dinner of fried chicken, okra and curry. ISB’s Iftar program spends $6000 on dates and serves free iftar daily during the month of Ramadan. Rehan Alavi is a member of the ISB council; he spoke to the Muslim Link in detail about ISB’s future. His specific duties are secretary of education and he acts as a liaison between the school and the Council. Alavi has held the post for the past two years. “I grew up in this community, attended Sunday School here,” he says. ISB is supported by monthly memberships fee of $20 a month for a family and $10 a month for individuals. “Currently, we have a few hundred members,” shared Alavi. Membership fees, sales from the ISB Al-Rahmah cafeteria and Friday collections are the main revenue generators and pay for daily operational expenses. Annual fundraising helps support the Quran Academy, other social and educational services and expansion.
Alavi said there are concerns. ISB has a member services secretary who is analyzing changing trends and options such as getting local business sponsorships, benefits and focusing on providing the community with services. “We have begun to explore options such as sponsorship, but there is no exact direction that we have yet- we are really looking to tackle this issue. The fundraising model is definitely challenging,” says Alavi. Aside from the school, ISB’s budget pays the Quran Academy staff and faculty, office, a staff accountant, custodial staff and contractors. “So our operational footprint is quite large to manage a facility of this size,” says Alavi. “We also understand that we have to become a more service oriented. Members look for services that are being provided for their children and families. Additional services can generate funds- we need to look into these issues more seriously, while maintaining a primarily volunteer organization,” he commented. Executing an iftar of this size needs planning, especially logistically serving 1500 people in a limited space and serving dinner within a set amount of time. The fundraising committee worked with the Rahmah cafeteria cooking staff, with parking and security staff. “Lot of coordination and collective work on behalf of a lot of volunteers. They put in many hours so everything can go off on time, mostly ISB youth group members.”
of town, so the whole council collectively executed the largest iftar of the year.
resources planning is often shelved. Investment in human capital is a need for all large Islamic centers.
The sisters’ side was crowded serving aboout 900 women and children. Sheema Hai, another young professional who has grown up at ISB, was leading the volunteers in the women’s section along with Donna Khan. “This is the first time we had the women eat outside and obviously there were some glitches but overall it went well. I wish the volunteers had met a few more times and given our tasks earlier. We need more women to volunteer and signage to guide the sisters and children,” she suggested, relying on her expertise as a professional event coordinator. “It should not be the job of the council to be so hands-on, their job is to deal with the bigger picture of what they want to accomplish from the event and not have to put their time and effort into planning the event.”
Sr. Shabazz, a mother of three, has been coming to ISB since her son was in PreK, he is now in eighth grade. “I love coming here!” she said. An elder. Mrs. Parveen Chaudhry, visiting from Pakistan extended her visit after seeing the atmosphere and opportunities to learn at ISB during Ramadan. “I see the fervor for the religion in the youth here, compared to Pakistan where the elderly are more committed,” she said,” they are proud of being Muslim.”
A center of this size has a large staff but does not have a full time staff member heading operations. The leadership are all volunteers. “Donating funds also re-energizes the volunteers as it shows that the community backs them,” emphasizes Alavi.
Many families left frustrated as fundraising for the target amount continued until 12:00 a.m. and they did not get a chance to pray isha in congregation. “They should have informed us in the beginning about the itinerary for the night, instead of holding us spiritually hostage on these blessed nights of Ramadan,” said ul Haq, an attendee. “For the past 3-4 years when we do the annual benefit during Ramadan the challenge has been timing. The model we have employed has been iftar, maghrib and then the program we typically conduct a very short taraweeh and end the night by 12:45,” explained Alavi.
Alavi said that the planning committee met on a weekly basis for two months to pull off this event. The treasurer who runs the fundraising committee was out
ISB used to have an operation manager on site but currently does not have one. The council sees the need for an Executive Manager and a Youth Director onsite to oversee operations. The challenge is to generate added value from these positions and set an initial investment timetable. We cannot call the youth and tell them that come here and listen to a lecture. As long as they are praying and coming to masjid. I have seen all the youngster in my brother’s community come hang out at the masjid. They play volleyball, basketball, even cricket. Mental Health Focus of Monthly Meetings at Dar Al-Hijrah By Hena Zuberi, Muslim Link Staff A beautiful new house next to the masjid for her family of four with a large yard, which she had planned to plant with hydrangeas. Everything seems perfect, but Sheila* is afraid to step out of her living room; slowly she has slipped into depression, wary of the neighbors. They leave trash bags on her front lawn, a Christmas wreath on her front door, and watch her from a window that overlooks her backyard. A recent immigrant, she is away from the safety net of family and friends. Her husband doesn’t understand why she can’t get over her fear, why she feels like she is being constantly watched, helpless, a prisoner in her own home. She is always sleepy and edgy. He has strictly told her not to confront the two women who live next to them. “I think they work for a federal agency,” she says. Desperate for help she attends the new mental health session at her local masjid, Dar Al Hijrah. She wants to know what should one do from a Muslim perspective, when one doesn’t want to take heavy medications from the fear of side effects. A tragedy on June 25, 2013 in Chantilly where one mentally ill brother stabbed his brother to death and then shot himself rocked the NoVA Muslim community as a family lost and buried two sons. The Mental Health Awareness sessions at Dar Al-Hijrah were scheduled to start that same weekend. The new monthly sessions at DAH, sponsored by Oasis Healthcare, promote mental wellness and provide education about mental illness to the community-at-large. At the first session Sandra Amen-Bryant and Mogitha AlKibsi, licensed therapists, actively engage the community through an educational presentation on

When people experience a trauma, it can place them at risk for PTSD. Some people experience trauma and never develop post traumatic stress disorder, while other individuals experience a trauma and begin having symptoms of PTSD immediately. AlKibsi says she, as a mental health professional, advocates for therapy with medication and natural supplements, as well as adhkar from the Quran and Sunnah. “How functional are you at home? If you are not able to pray or can not take care of your children then your higher level of function may outweigh the side effects of medication,” she recommends. “The brain is an organ just like the heart and can get a disorder, there is nothing to be ashamed of that you have mental disorder,” stresses AlKibsi. Bryan. Our moods fluctuate, as do our stress levels; our bodies are also in a state of flux. These factors will dictate what our mood will be like throughout the day. How we handle these daily changes determines how easily we can fall into depression. Depression is a medical illness that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Depression can cause physical symptoms, too. Causes of depression can include adolescence and old age, decline in health. Loss of a family member- infertility can be a continuing form of loss, especially loss of hope. Health problems, divorce, relocation, death of a pet, giving birth are all causes of depression, as are decline in career, unemployment, a job change. “We all someone know who is experiencing financial problems; we can all negotiate life when we have the income to do it,” comments Amen-Bryan. Loss of interest, negative feelings about self and other people, difficulty making decisions. difficulty concentrating, feeling guilty, constant worrying, baseless fears, anger especially amongst men and teenagers. irritability, feeling
of emptiness, and loss of energy are all symptoms. Digestive problems that don’t get better over time may be a symptom of depression, such as heartburn, constipation, no appetite, too much appetite, not ever having a good feeling ever inside your stomach. Depressed people often start avoiding people. Low level depression is a mild condition and can last on the average of two years- people tend to be overly critical, incapable of having fun, and are constantly complaining. “Don’t selfdiagnose, come and see a therapist,” suggests Amen-Bryan. She explains how low level depression can change into major depression if the person has a major stressful event in their life. Questions come from the audience about re-living fears after natural disasters. AlKibsi answers that the impact of such an event may dissipate, for some and not for others; symptoms may be short lived for some and easy to get rid of as time passes. 50-70 percent of Americans have experienced trauma. American Muslims, especially immigrants have a much higher percentage according to AlKibsi.”I think we have seen war, hunger, lack of education and are more susceptible to trauma,” she says. “Coming from Yemen where I was exposed to war and revolutions, after September 11th I felt like crying all the time,” she shares with the audience. “Most of us from the Middle East come with a lot of issues, I believe we have higher rates of PTSD and anxiety.” Amen-Bryan and AlKibsi spoke with Sheila and gave her several resources, including names of bicultural therapists in the area as well as civil rights organizations such as CAIR. In Midst of Ramadan, Chicago-area Muslims Urged to Boycott Dates Linked to Israel By Manya Brachear Pashman,
dollars.
Chicago Tribune reporter, July 12, 2013
"It's a peaceful way to get Israel to comply with international law because settlements are illegal and occupation is illegal," she said. " By not buying products, we hit Israel in the pocketbook and effect change that way."
Just as the Prophet Muhammad broke his daily fasts 1,400 years ago with the taste of a date, Muslims today end their daily abstention during Ramadan by biting into the flesh of the same sweet golden fruit.
The Anti-Defamation League, which guards against anti-Semitism, said it is wary of the campaign's intentions.
But this year, many Chicago-area Muslims have added a present-day geopolitical purpose to that ritual by making sure the fruit did not grow on an Israeli settlement in the West Bank. The worldwide campaign organized by American Muslims for Palestine, a national group based in Palos Hills, is a seasonal offshoot of a movement that has encouraged boycotts of Israeli products and divestment from companies that do business with the Jewish state. The group asks shoppers to boycott Israeli fruit companies and any brands distributed by an Israeli date consortium — business that represents about 35 percent of the world's date market. Kristin Szremski, the organization's media director, said the group hopes to emphasize the importance of justice during Ramadan and make more Muslims aware of its broader efforts yearround. "It's a matter of awareness," Szremski said. "In the Muslim faith, justice is tantamount. It's a main tenet of our faith." During Ramadan, Muslims are commanded to fast from dawn to dusk as a show of patience and virtue. The fast not only prohibits eating and drinking during daylight, it also forbids vices

purposes, then at least for the sake of quality.
Families rise before dawn to pray and share a light meal called suhur in Arabic. They gather again at dusk to break the fast by biting into a date, a simple sugar that the body can break down during subsequent evening prayers. The iftar meal that follows the prayers is often packed with protein.
Mike Nobani, manager of the Shop & Save who also is Muslim, said the store sells a steady stream of dates throughout the holy month, though none of the fruits piled high in the store's produce section come from Israel.
But the first bite after the daylong fast is also packed with historical significance, said Maha Ghandor, 37, of Chicago Ridge, as she carefully inspected dates at the Shop & Save in Bridgeview on Thursday. She chose a box of glistening golden Medjool dates from South Africa as opposed to a darker and drier looking variety from California. "These are the dates they lived off of a long time ago in the times of the prophet," she said. "Five people used to share one date. That's how they survived." Ghandor wasn't initially aware of the boycott. When she learned about it, she agreed it's important to pay attention to the fruit's origins, if not for political
Instead, an entire wall was covered Thursday with boxes from South Africa, California, Saudi Arabia, Palestine and Tunisia. Nobani said he doesn't see the point of selling a product that customers tell him they won't buy. "Our clients were asking," he said. "They know what they want." Szremski said she hopes the boycott against Israeli dates will send a powerful economic message.
American Muslims for Palestine promotes extreme anti-Israel views and anti-Semitism under the guise of educating Americans about the "just cause of Palestine," the group said in a statement. Marwa Abed, 24, of Palos Hills, said she sympathizes with the campaign. She said she has seen the Jewish-only road built at the edge of her grandfather's olive groves in the West Bank. When her mother told her to select the least expensive dates in the supermarket last week, Abed pulled out her iPhone, took photos of the labels and started researching the companies. She said biting into the fruit before prayers and a meal does more than give her a burst of energy and surge of sugar, it "opens your senses." This year, she said, it does that even more.
Last year, the harvest in Israel was reported to yield about 30,000 tons of fruit, about 50 percent of which was exported.
"Ramadan is all about doing justice," Abed said. "Doing justice between you and your creator, between you and the world, between you and your soul. Doing justice in all your actions. If I went the other route I don't think I'd be pursuing justice."
Szremski said that represents an annual profit in the hundreds of millions of

Anti-Islam Activists Are Freaking Out About Crayons Now By Tim Murphy,
Christmas trees and bunnies abound but a search for the Bible returned zero results.
Anti-Shariah activists have a new target in their sights: Crayola. Late last week the Pickens County (Ga.) Republican party posted a call to action on its website about a new promotion from the world's leading crayon manufacturer, which had begun offering free Islamic-themed coloring pages in honor of Ramadan. Zut alors! The images are pretty innocuous—one features a prayer rug; another features a young boy kneeling while reading from the Koran. But the Pickens GOP sees something more nefarious:

Recall that Muslims consider Ramadan the "month of jihad" and "month of victory" over infidels. Crayola should remind kids not to try and draw Muhammad lest their parents need to fend off Muslims and enter witness relocation – like the creator of Everyone Draw Muhammad Day – since the FBI nor anyone else will protect them.
Both the Pickens County GOP and another antiShariah website, the appropriately named "Creeping Sharia," both published the exact same text on the exact same day, so it's not clear who plagiarized whom. Crayola is in good company. Other American institutions that have fallen under the spell of Shariah (according to anti-Shariah activists) include David Petraeus, the grocery store Wegman's, and Nashville's Hutton Hotel
Why Have So Many Liberals Been Silent About NSA Spying? It's not about Obama or party loyalty. It's about the reality that public opinion on privacy versus security can change quickly By Ana Marie Cox theguardian.com, August 2, 2013 Why hasn't the left been able to rally support around opposition to domestic spying? Tea Party candidates on the right have been able to generate excitement among GOP base voters with their calls to end the National Security Agency's domestic spying program. Senator Rand Paul appears to have staked his entire potential presidential campaign on a brash defense of personal privacy (except when it comes to abortion). Libertarianleaning Republicans in the House have

risen 22 points; Democrats who say the government should prioritize preventing terrorism over privacy has gone up 18 points.
Those advocates of civil liberties (some of them quite new to the cause) have a convenient explanation for why Democrats have been less vocal and slower to criticize the collection of metadata from everyday American citizens: slavish devotion to President Obama, whatever policies he might champion.
The neatness of these changes in position is almost disturbing. It suggests that advocacy for civil liberties is a zero-sum game: there's only so much libertarianism to be had at any given historical moment, there's a ceiling on Americans' ability to believe that the right to privacy is paramount. Indeed, as you might suspect from the numbers above, polling among all Americans on the balance of national security to privacy has neatly flipped as well. The percentage of voters that worry that the US will go "too far" in violating privacy rights in pursuit of terrorists versus "not going far enough" is now 56% percent versus 36%. In 2001, after the 9/11 attacks, it was 31% versus 55%.
This is an easy argument to make – and it goes both ways. Polling among Democratic and Republican voters shows a mirror-image of approval for Obama's use of the tactic to Bush's use of it. Since 2002, the number of Democrats who approved monitoring online activities has increased 12 points; among Republicans it has decreased 13 points. Since 2006, the number of Republicans who say the government should prioritize privacy over hunting terrorists has
It's these numbers, rather than the occupant of the White House, that explains
Democrats' reluctance to move very aggressively in championing personal privacy – or, at least, it explains the difficulty in creating a lasting coalition around it. If at best, you will only get half the country to agree with you – and what's more, different phrasing of the question or current events context shows inherent wobbliness on the issue – what politician will stick out his (or her) neck over it? Already, the roster of 2016 presidential candidates illustrates the ambivalence of those who would like retain "electable" and "moderate" as part of their bio. While the skirmish between Chris Christie and Paul over terrorism and its prevention via surveillance got a lot of media attention this week, it's more helpful to look at the general trend among potential candidates. Bangladesh Court Declares Jamaat Illegal High Court decision on country's biggest Islamist party takes it out of running in forthcoming elections. Source: Al-Jazeera, August 1, 2013 Bangladesh's High Court has declared the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami, the country's main Islamist party, is illegal, banning it from contesting January's general election. The court made the ruling in the country's capital, Dhaka, on Thursday after a petition was lodged arguing that Jamaat's charter breached the constitution. "It is hereby declared illegal," said Moazzem Hossain, the chief judge hearing the case amid tight security outside the courthouse in Dhaka. Shahdeen Malik, a lawyer for the Bangladeshi election commission, which oversees preparations for elections due next January, said the ruling meant Jamaat could not field candidates. Protests over the verdicts have sparked violence that has left at least 150 people dead during street clashes with security forces, Human Rights Watch said in a report released on Thursday. Jamaat has said that the trials are a sham aimed at eliminating the party, which is a key opposition force. will expand the school’s capacity by 70 students. Conditioning Ourselves to Fast and Perform Other Good Deeds After Ramadan Excerpts from Lataif al Maa’rif of Al Hafith ibn Rajab –may Allah have mercy on him. Taken from Mustafa George's (Hafidahullah) Blog Al Hafith Ibn Rajab (died 795h) stated:
Benefits obtained in conditioning oneself to fast after Ramadan 1. Fasting the six days of Shawwal completes the reward for fasting a full year. 2. Fasting these six days and previously fasting in the month of Shabaan (prior to Ramadan) is similar to the sunan ar rawaatib (voluntary prayers associated to each obligatory prayer). These prayers proceed and succeed the obligatory prayers, and correct the deficiency and insufficiency present within them. Indeed voluntary prayers strengthen and perfect any deficiency present within obligatory prayers as has been mentioned by the Messenger –Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam- in several narrations. Most people possess fault and defect in their obligatory prayers, and because of this the Messenger –Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam- forbid a person from saying: I have fasted and stood (in prayer) the full month of Ramadan. (Abu Dawud, Nisaee) A companion upon hearing this hadith said: I don’t know if this forbidding was due to dislike of praise or due to defect present in the act of worship. 3. Conditioning oneself to fast these days of Shawwal is a sign of acceptance of Ramadan. If Allah accepts an action from His servant He gives that individual the tawfeeq (success) to perform another righteous action thereafter. Some (of the early Muslims) used to say: The reward for a good deed is the good deed that follows it. Therefore, whoever performs a good deed, and follows it up with another, this is considered a sign of acceptance of the first deed performed. Likewise, if one were to perform a good deed, and thereafter perform an evil deed, this is considered a sign that the first action was rejected and not accepted from that person. 4. Fasting the month of Ramadan warrants forgiveness for previous sins, as has been mentioned previously. In addition to the fasting individuals being rewarded for their completion of the month on the day of Eid, which is also titled: The Day of Prizes. With this being the case, fasting the (6) days of Shawwal is done to show appreciation for this great blessing (forgiveness of sins), for indeed there is no greater blessing than it. The Messenger –Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam- used to stand in prayer at night until his feet bled. Upon doing so he was asked, would you perform such an action while Allah has forgiven you your past and future sins?! The Messenger –Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam- replied: Should I not be a grateful servant? Allah –The Most Glorified and The Most High- has ordered His servants to glorify Him in appreciation for fasting the month of Ramadan. This is done through remembrance of Him and other forms of gratitude. Allah said:
....
{And in order for you to complete the prescribed days and magnify Allah for having guided you, and so that you may be grateful to Him} al Baqarah:185 And from those forms of gratitude of the servant to his Lord for having given him success to fast Ramadan, assisting him in doing so, and forgiving him of his sins and faults, is the servant fasting (6 days of Shawwal) upon the completion of Ramadan as a means of appreciation. If the early Muslims were given success to pray night prayer on a particular night, they would fast the following day in show of gratitude. Wahb bin al Ward was asked about the reward for performing a particular action, such as Tawwaf (encircling the Ka’ba), he responded: Don’t ask about the reward for performing such an action, but instead ask about what is upon the individual of gratitude in appreciation for the success and assistance in performing the action. If you have not increased in actions (of piety) in appreciation for the blessings upon you, then verily you are not grateful. One must show gratitude for every blessing that Allah has bestowed upon him in his religion and in worldly affairs. Once a person is given this tawfeeq to (actually) show gratitude, then it is once more upon him to show gratitude in appreciation for this tawfeeq. This is a continuous cycle of gratitude, and because of this, a servant will never be able to fully show thankfulness (for the blessings granted to him). The reality of gratitude is that an individual confesses to his inability to (completely) show thankfulness. Abu ‘Omrin as Shaybani said: Musa –alayhi salam- said on the day of his visit to Mountain Turr: Oh Allah, if I pray, then I do so by Your favor, if I give charity, then I do so by Your favor, and if I spread Your message, then I do so by Your favor. How can I show (complete) gratitude to You!? Allah responded: Oh Musa, now you have showed gratitude. As for the one who repays the blessing of being able to fast Ramadan, by indulging in sin upon completion of the month, then this person is from those who have repaid the blessings of Allah with ungratefulness. If this individual is certain that once the month is over, he will return to sin, then his fast is not accepted and the door of mercy is shut in his face. The author further stated: 5. The actions of obedience that were performed during Ramadan do not end at the conclusion of Ramadan, rather these actions continue as one has life. Many people rejoice at the conclusion of Ramadan due to the difficulty, boredom and length of fasting. A person who views fasting Ramadan in such a way will more than likely not immediately return to (voluntarily) fasting. Therefore, the person who immediately begins fasting after completing Ramadan (in Shawwal) is displaying his strong desire to fast and he is demonstrating that he did not become
August 9th - September 12th 2013 bored nor did he dislike fasting the month of Ramadan. The author further said: It was said to Bishrin: Indeed the people are worshipping and diligently (performing good deeds in Ramadan). He replied: How terrible are the people that only acknowledge the rights of Allah in Ramadan. Verily the pious individual is one who worships and is diligent throughout the year. The actions of The Messenger –Sallallahu 'alyhi wa sallam- were constant. ‘Aisha –may Allah be pleased with her- was asked: Did The Messenger choose a specific day (for the performance of righteous deeds)? She replied: No, his actions were constant. She also stated: He would never increase in Ramadan nor in other than Ramadan over 11 units (in voluntary night prayer).

The youth are being addressed in this hadith, but as for the elder person, then his committing sins after completion of Ramadan is worse and more repulsive. This is because a young person may intend to repent toward the end of his life, and this is also dangerous because death may suddenly approach him, but concerning the elder person, his boat (of life) has docked at the pier of death,
It is stated in a hadith: “Verily the look (at what is haram) is an arrow from the arrows of Ibless (Shaytaan). If one abandons this look out of fear,
He (author) later stated: Ask Allah to make you firm upon (His) obedience until death approaches you, and seek refuge with Him from the changing of one’s heart and from wickedness after piety. How strange is shamefulness of sin after worthiness of obedience, and how strange is poverty of greed, after wealth of contentment! He (author) later stated: Oh youths of Tawbah (mature individuals who perform tawbah): Do not return to suckling from the breast of desire (hawaa) after you have weaned from it. Indeed breastfeeding is only befitting for babies and not for (grown) men, but one must be patient upon the bitterness of weaning. If you are patient in this matter the taste of desire (hawaa) will be substituted with the sweetness of faith (eman) in your hearts. Whoever abandons something for the sake of Allah, he
These were just a few excerpts from this wonderful work (Lataif al Maa’rif) of Al Hafith ibn Rajab –may Allah have mercy on him. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon His last Messenger Muhammed, and upon his family members and companions.
HAVE YOU CONSIDERED A CAREER AS A YOUTH DIRECTOR? If so please read details below!
The author later stated: The (righteous) actions of a believer do not end until death befalls him. Hasan al Basri said: Indeed Allah did not indicate an end to the actions of a believer except at the time of death. Then Hasan recited the verse of Allah: {And worship your Lord until death approaches} surah hajr:99

The Ramadan Bump A look at Ramadan Through the Lens of Google Trends Every day Google answers more than one billion questions from people around the globe in 181 countries and in 146 languages. Google Trends aggregates these searches and helps spot trends. Used heavily by Internet marketers and savvy politicians, Google Trends can be a fascinating tool to give us a glimpse
into community interests. One thing I really like about this tool is that at this scale it’s really hard to “fake” the data, therefore, the accuracy of the business intelligence you can get from here may rival that of Gallop polls. In this two part article, we take
#1 People worldwide, searching for Qur’an Over The Past Decade
Google Trends for a ride to see what it tells us about certain communal behaviors in and out of Ramadan. In this issue, we provide enough evidence to establish Google Trends, or similar tools, as a valid way for establishing benchmarks on our community behavior. In the next issue, we show how we may use these
tools to achieve measurable success in our community building efforts. The results are at once fascinating, sometimes unexpected, sometimes funny, but always enlightening. Without farther ado, we present to you the top trends from Ramadan of the past 10 years.
#2 250% Increase in Interest in Qur’an over the past decade If search volume is an indicator of interest, then more than twice as many people are now interested in Qur’an compared to a decade back. This trend is seen almost worldwide, both in and outside of Ramadan. Please note, Google Trend does not show the actual number of searches but rather a relative value of how much or how little a term is searched for, with the peak trend always getting a score of 100. For example, here, in 2013, the Ramadan bump touched 100, highest so far, as compared to in 2005, when it was around 40. This means, in 2013, 2.5 times more people are searching for Qur’an than a decade back.
Notice the spike during Ramadan of each year, marked by the unmistakable Ramadan Bumps.
<< #3 Yet Another Way To See The Moon (Not!)? Adding to the calculation method, the global sighting and the local sighting, we can now add Google Forcast, a feature of Google Trends, to throw in yet another option to mark the beginning and end of Ramadan for the technology minded.

So What? … You May Ask
From the East to the Middle East to the West, the unmistakeable spirit of Ramadan shining through. Indeed the gates of heaven opened and the gates of hell are closed.
Does it do us any good to dig up these trends? The answer depends on what we do with the results. Our goal was to show how we can leverage on available technology to help us gain valuable insight about the state of our communities. Allah has put a system in place to measure even the smallest grain of good and bad deeds that we do. It is about time we take a cue from it.
This one above shows the interest in Qur’an in United States by cities. Why Minneapolis comes out at the top is beyond us. If you know of a good reason, how Minneapolis consistently ranks #1 in Qur’an search in the U.S.A, beating all the Muslim hot spots like Austin/Dallas/Houston, Santa Clara, D.C/Virginia/Maryland, Chicago etc, let us know.
Muslim communities all over the world have many challenges: crisis of faith, misrepresentation in media, breaking families, single mothers, teenager angst, and the list goes on and on. How do we measure success in tackling any of these challenges, until we can quantify our problems? Source: http://home.ajrapps.com/

a struggle to balance our deeply held convictions of privacy and freedoms and liberties with our need to provide for national security.” Governor Bobby Jindal does the same kind of hand-wringing, saying only that the balance between promoting a smaller government and national security issues is a debate worth having. Senator John Thune and former House member, now senator, Rob Portman speak with the same precise restraint. Former GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan straddles the divide more obviously; he told reporters that the NSA practices were "creepy" but voted to continue funding them.
On the left, even Senator Elizabeth Warren – generally presumed about as far left as a mainstream candidate can go – has called simply, safely for "an informed discussion". Most of the governors in the running (and most of the named prospective candidates are governors) have been spared having to comment on the controversy at all. I have a lot faith in Americans' inherent distaste for government intrusion into their lives. My theory of American civil rights has always been that we move forward, and sometime backward, to the exact degree that a majority of Americans can be convinced that the issue is fundamentally about being left alone to live one's life with minimum snooping or control from anyone. It's
true for marriage equality, reproductive rights, providing a path to citizenship for illegal aliens, the tenacity of Second Amendment beliefs, and an argument can be made that the protection of voting rights can be manipulated to either side's advantage along these lines as well: we just don't like to see our fellow citizens hassled. (Conservatives show footage of Black Panthers at the polls, progressives harken back – not very far – the obstacles white legislators put in front of black voters.) The problem with applying this theory to the right to private communication, virtual assembly, and expression is that

one has to images of a terrorist attack. The immediate sense that "it could have been me". And as for how terrorist attacks engender the desire for protection – a very particular kind of action by authorities. And the heroics stances that politicians can make when they say that they have saved you! It is cynical but true that one reason 2016 candidates have refrained from speaking too loudly on domestic spying is their understanding of this very dynamic. One bomb, one devastating video, one instance when our agencies
can prove a near-miss and a denouncement of surveillance becomes a millstone and not a platform. An attack could produce the desperate acceptance of a security state in an instant. But it is difficult to imagine the incidents that would spur momentum towards a broader movement for and understanding of the right to privacy. And if you can imagine America coming to that – whether it looks like 1984 or Singapore – well, by then it will be too late.

Dear Muslim Link Readers: In April 2013 the Muslim Link team embarked on a ground breaking da'wa project that -- to our knowledge -- has never been done before in the United States. Just like we have our masjid communities in MD, DC, and VA, incarcerated Muslims also have their communities across the nation. Some prison communities are over a thousand strong, while other communities have only a handful of Muslims. Just like we need a media to connect our masajid, Muslim inmates need a media outlet that connects them to each other, and to the Muslim community outside their prison walls. "Hijrah" is a news magazine produced by the Muslim Link specifically for inmates. It contains articles of hope, inspiration, and courage. It promotes family ties, Islamic morals, purification of the soul, and being a contributor to society. With news from the Muslim community across the nation and the world, it helps connect imprisoned
Muslims with the rest of the Ummah. And with articles and artwork written by inmates themselves, its truly media "by and for" incarcerated Muslims. Using our existing team of writers and graphic designers, we produced the first issue -- a full color 64 page magazine -- in April 2013. The printing cost was around $3000 and several generous donors took care of it. Alhumdulillah we've distributed around 2,500 copies to prisoners all over the nation and the response has been great as the quote above from a recent letter shows.
each issue.
Our big challenge right now is back office help. We need volunteers to process subscription requests, make contact with prison chaplains across the nation and introduce them to Hijrah, collect and write excellent content, and help out in other areas.
We've established an excellent, unique resource that does not take a lot of money to run. It just needs some hearts who feel Muslim inmates are our brothers and sisters, too. If "out of sight" doesn't mean "out of mind" for you, please get involved. We've just scratched the surface of the potential of this project.
At this time Hijrah is a quarterly publication so the work load is not intensive since it is spread over three months for
