Community News Group Walks for HIV/AIDS Awareness, Says Stigma Hurting HIV+ Muslims By Khadijah Abdullah

Muslim Link Contributing Writer The annual AIDS Walk Washington DC kicked off on the morning of October 26, 2013. Over 5,000 participants walked to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. The weather was cold, and hats, jackets, and scarves were seen throughout the crowd. In this crowd was a team called Reaching All HIV+ Muslims In America (RAHMA). RAHMA is an organization based in the DC metro area that addresses HIV/AIDS in the American Muslim community through education, advocacy and empowerment.

This event was a good way to raise awareness and get people to feel invested in the cause when they sponsor a participant,” said Mariam, who raised over $350 with the help of family and friends.

It is important that we are raising awareness on HIV and people are taking notice. Muslims living with HIV are hiding in the shadows because stigma is so rampant in our community. HIV is only a virus. Stigma is the deadly disease.

As a first time participant, I was happy and proud to be a part of the AIDS Walk to raise awareness and show my support for people courageously living with HIV/AIDS. I know it can't be easy. I also participated because I wanted to show any Muslim who might be living with the disease that our community has members who are eager to support them. As Muslims, we have been instructed to enjoin good and forbid evil. What more good can we do, than raise awareness of a vicious disease whose victims are often undeservingly stigmatized when they most need our support?

Depending on which culture they are from and lack of education, it can get worse. I had one patient who appeared on edge, and through translation he expressed that his family kept him isolated in another room, as if he were contagious! Oh Allah, protect us from such ignorance! Ameen! Many Muslims have their heads in the sand at the mere mention of HIV, as if it couldn't happen to them. Not all who come into Islam were born Muslim. Some came into Islam with HIV. Once someone close to me contracted HIV, it became my reality. It was surreal. The tears of my patients struggling with the stigma, the sense of belonging, the feeling of displacement and isolation in an atmosphere of stigma became a shared concern,” explained Salaam. Everyone needs somebody to be there for them, to support and direct them in a confidential manner, explained Salaam. RAHMA first participated in the AIDS Walk last year. Four members attended. It is great we had a team of eleven this year, but we need more. To end stigma we

have to do this together. It takes a village to make a difference. I hope to see at least 25 people participate in AIDS Walk 2014. The HIV virus has been around for over 30 years and is still affecting communities across the globe, including Muslims. In the USA, both stigma and the number of HIV+ Muslims are on the rise. Very few people in the American Muslim community are discussing HIV and most members are ignorant on the subject. Lack of information about HIV/AIDS, and lack of a safe space to discuss it are a toxic combination. Many members of the community are at risk, and those who do live with HIV often feel isolated. What can you do to raise awareness in your community? Invite RAHMA to host a FREE interactive workshop with FREE HIV Testing at your masjid, Muslim Student Association, and/or community event. If you know someone living with HIV, be supportive and non judgmental. By empowering our communities to effectively address HIV, we come ever closer to removing the stigma once and for all. Daughter of Muslim Astronomer Khalid Shaukat In Critical Need of Kidney By Muslim Link Staff Zareen Shaukat, 38, is the daughter of the founder of moonsighting.com, Khalid Shaukat and a resident of Montgomery County. She has been battling Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) and is in urgent need of a kidney transplant. Without a job, she has been denied insurance coverage due to pre-existing conditions. An ideal candidate for the new Health Care Act but according to her father, “there is no time to wait for Obamacare”. Because of her age, she is not covered under her

father’s insurance and is need of a kidney transplant as soon as possible, for which the expenses exceed $270,000. “Zareen is one of the most loving and positive people we know. She has done many things to help her community and country. Now she needs your support, She is in the final renal failure stage,” says her father, Khalid Shaukat. She is a mobile interface designer and an alumnus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. A soft-spoken man, known for his sherwanis and Jinnah cap, Shaukat set up

“I pray for Zareen Shaukat's health, donor and quick recovery, Ameen. May Allah help you, your parents, friends and relatives, Ameen,” wrote Mohammed Qamruzzaman as he made a donation on the website set up for Zareen. According to the family, Zareen has applied for Medicare which will take time to kick in, but until then they need coverage for the gap time while she is not being covered. In the vestibule of the ISWA masjid hangs a large beautiful picture of the Haram Sharif Precincts / Ka’ba in Makka. Hanging to the left of the picture is a framed acrostic that spells out I-S-W-A. Each letter of the word symbolizes a statement and some ayah (verses from Qur’an) to consider: I- Involvement and Interaction. The ayat that follows states: The Believers, men and women, are protectors, one to another: they enjoin what is just and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practice regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise. [Surah Taubah9:71] S- Strive to be considerate: Then will he of those who believe, and enjoin patience, (constancy, and self-restraint), and enjoin deeds of kindness and com passion. Germantown Masjid Leaders: Don't Let Masjid Construction Stop By Hena Zuberi

Najjar said that there are at least 500 families in the area from Boyds to Clarksburg to the border of Gaithersburg. The 13 years that have passed in the making of the masjid has fragmented the community and despite the great need and population of Muslims living in the area, there were only 50 people who showed up at the townhall at the Boys and Girls Club in Germantown, nearby to the site of the new Germantown masjid. The management shrugged pessimism off and plunged ahead, citing the need to raise the children in a healthy environment.

Right when they are close to the finish line, a shortage of funds could bring the project to a screeching halt. As of the now the property on Blunt Road in Montgomery County, Maryland has been leveled and a basement is excavated and walled. The Islamic Society of Germantown leaders called an emergency town hall meeting on October 26, 2013 at 5:30 p.m. at the site to show concerned community members the progress and inform them of the financial situation. “We have enough funds in the bank for the project to continue until the month of January,” said Ammar Najjar, resident

How to Build a $5 Million Masjid for a Growing Community for Only $1.75 million By Sheik Zamal Housein

Muslim Link Contributing Writer The Islamic Society of the Washington Area (ISWA) purchased 5.25 acres of land with a house that was remodeled to hold about 220 people. We were faced with a crisis when 300 more people wanted to attend our Eids, pray Jumu'ah and use our facilities for private functions. With minimal financial resources, it was a challenge and a daunting task facing our community. Having just finished paying our debt of $275,000 and saving about $25,000 we embarked upon an expansion. The first obstacle is that the property is located in an environmentally protected area which restricted the land use to 10% including the building and a parking lot. Thousands of dollars were spent on architects, plans and modifications that were rejected time and time again by the county authorities. Frustration was mounting but we kept on trying. It was by the will of Allah, the duaas, patience of the community, the perseverance of the Board of Directors and the creativity of Brs. Gaith Abdo and Hemal Mustafa, that after two and half years and numerous meetings with the architects and countless trips to the Montgomery County Parks and Planning Offices, we finally received a conditional approval to build. We were approved to add square footage by adding one story up and limited parking spaces.

We reviewed the cost of material, labor and operating expense and concluded that we have members in our community with the knowledge and expertise and if they pitch in through volunteerism, we can save a lot of money and do this project ourselves. We were confident to take on the project. We became the projects managers and decided that our own community member Hafeez Hassan will be our on-site project manager, aided by Shaukat and Azad Alie. Dr. Fazil Alie, the President and I, (the treasurer) would do the research

and groundwork to get permits, negotiate material pricing and find the best subcontractors, on our terms. We estimated that the project will cost about $2M and by this point we had raised only $500,000. Al Hamdulillah, ISWA leaders were very patient and transparent regarding the project. Our community was constantly updated and many started fundraising drives on their own.

Abdul-Mateen Chida Returns to Allah Halalco Owner Pioneered Halal Meat Business In DC Region By Muslim Link Staff In the best of days, on the blessed day of the week and at the blessed time of Jumuah, Mohammad Abdul Mateen Chida returned to his Lord on Friday, October 11, 2013 (5 Dhul Hijja 1434), and an estimated 2000 people came to pray for him. The All Dulles Area Masjid (ADAMS Center) was packed to capacity for the Janazah prayer on Saturday, October 12, 2013 for the owner of Halalco in Falls Church, VA, after Dhur prayer; the burial took place at National Memorial Park, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church. Humble, pious, generous is how the community describes him. “He has helped probably hundreds of people with "random acts of kindness", many can attribute this to their success in life because it was that little boost they needed to take their lives to the next level. Anything from keeping them at his home as a guest when they were down on their luck, or cooking food for them if they lost their job. The amazing thing was he never

Doctor: Entire Family Could Have Died In Another Two Hours Local Muslim Family Poisoned by Carbon Monoxide, All Members Rushed to ER By Hena Zuberi Muslim Link Staff Reporter An entire Muslim family in the DC Metro narrowly escaped death by carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning in a real life horror story on October 30, 2013. They are sharing their story anonymously to help spread awareness that could possibly save a life. An odorless, colorless and toxic gas that is impossible to see, taste or smell, CO can kill you before you are aware it is in your home. The afternoon before the incident,

the Ahmad's* landlord turned on the gas heater. Unbeknownst to the family, the chimney and vents were not cleaned and so the fumes were circulating in the home. The family went out for dinner and arrived home around 10 at night. Immediately upon arrival they noticed the house emitted a slight odor like burnt candles, but didn't think much of it and went to sleep. The next morning, everybody woke up with severe headaches. The father of the household was vomiting uncontrollably, and he and others were collapsing and fainting as they tried to get on

with their morning duties. They first suspected food poisoning, but when the conditions became very severe, one family member brought up that it may be carbon monoxide. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, at lower levels of exposure, CO causes mild effects that are often mistaken for the flu. On October 26, 2013, Sabree, Omar Karim of Banneker Ventures and the partners of HEP Construction held the first meeting of Muslim Businesses in Construction in the DC Metro area at the Montgomery County Executive Office Building. Imam Johari Abdul Malik made the suggestion to the men to set up some type of financial program for Muslims to make money by working together: not being afraid to share a customer, to network, to help a fellow Muslim. A place where a millionaire can be eating on the same table as a poor man and each can still do business with the other. After a round of introductions from the attendees, Omar Karim of Banneker Ventures described their vision and promise a day of learning and brotherhood. Since 2005, Banneker has managed the construction of more than two million square feet of government and commercial projects with another $100M in projects under way. Sabree and Banneker aim to compile a database of Muslim construction-related companies. According to the Census Bureau, $915M are spent in the United States per month on new structures or improvements to existing structures for private and public sectors. Ayad Bazlamit of Ace Engineering, a civil engineering firm from Virginia attended after a Muslim brother emailed him informing him of the event. Several heard of the event from their local Muslim newspaper. Many have faced racism and bigotry, with contracts pulled at the last minute and they want to set a system where Muslims work together. “We can not depend on others,” said attendee, Tariq Lang. Contractors obtain surety bonds from surety companies or agents representing surety companies. Most public construction contracts and many private contracts require one. SBA guarantees bid, performance and payment bonds issued by surety companies. Sabree told the men gathered to get the SBA certification, “I was a nuclear warfare officer with top clearance, but they rejected me three times,” he said. “Today, I have a six million dollar bond. They say that it has been a tough road but with the support of other Muslim businesses they have remained interest free. Mitha, Special Assistant to the Director of the Department of Defense (DoD) Office of Small Business Programs said that of the $250 billion a year more than twenty percent goes to small businesses. He thought the meeting was very informative; he learned things that he had never known before. ”The legality that is in the construction business is news to me, some of the things they pointed out I didn’t have any idea about.” Now Ahmad is seriously thinking of hiring a lawyer and an accountant. A residential builder, trying to get into government contracting, Kashif Khan is certified as a minority business and plans to get bonded. He owns KG General Contractors in Ellicott City, MD. ”We have misconceptions about government contracts; we cre-

Muslim Link Staff Reporter Born and raised in Washington D.C., Cheryl Watkins always knew she was Native American, because she remembered looking through her maternal grandfather’s family album. There, in all her glory, was a grainy photograph of her great-grandmother in full Indian regalia. She was sitting on a stool, a shawl wrapped around her and no part of her body showing. A Cherokee Indian; the ancient Cherokee (Sharkee) identified themselves as Ani'Yun'-wiya, meaning "real or principal people." Watkins used to work for the Fairfax County School District. A degenerative, herniated disc has left her unable to work but she keeps herself moving and busy. She attends the Islamic Research and Humanitarian Services Center of America, Dar Al Hijrah, the 18th Street masjid and Dar Al Noor-which is around the corner from her daughter’s house in Manassas, VA.

“Our families were separated when our people were oppressed. I have relatives in Canada that refused to be enslaved, so they ran as far north as they could,” she says. tain a national registry. Republicans want to pass the bill in a piece meal fashion rather than pass one all encompassing bill, said the Congressman. AAI Government Relation Manager Yasmin Taif introduced Tyler Moran, the Deputy Director for Immigration Policy for the White House Domestic Policy Council. The audience heard from Moran; she has worked on all major immigration bills over the last 15 years. Moran stressed that immigration reform was a top priority for President Obama. She said that even though the President would prefer to sign the whole bill if it came to his desk, he was willing to take some reform over the status quo. President Obama’s office representative told the audience that there was no ‘bright line’ drawn by the President. “He wants to see what the Republicans come up with,” said Moran. Immigration attorney Hassan Ahmed from Virginia deals with many who are in the process of filing their immigration paper work. He senses misconceptions among many of the people who have been waiting in line and came into the country legally. Moran told the audience that there is no jumping in line, but a new line is being created for those where there was none before. Undocumented immigrants will be on a 13 year road to citizenship; they will have to file for provisional status to work and travel, if they were in the country before 2011, pay fines and fees and then wait 5 years. After 5 years they will get another provisional status. After ten years, they will be able to file for a green card, and eventually two years after that they will be able to apply for citizenship. Kamal Essaheb, Immigration Policy Attorney with the National Immigration Law Center (NILC) spoke about his first encounter with immigration law as a young Moroccan immigrant, on a cold winter day at 26 Federal Plaza in New York City – the 2001 INS special registration program, NSEERS. “We had to wait for

The SAFE Act is a bill that could pose difficulties for immigrants said Essaheb. The bill criminalizes being in the country without legal status, such as overstaying a visa. It also empowers state and local police and potentially turns them into immi-

gration agents. According to the NILC, “the SAFE Act’s single-minded focus on immigration enforcement will increase detentions and deportations, and will create an environment of rampant racial profiling and unconstitutional detentions without fixing the immigration system’s problems.” “Make sure you let your member of Congress know that this is an important issue to you, especially the racial profiling concerns and educate yourself about this issue,” advised Essaheb.

federal recognition; they are recognized by the states of New England, but federal recognition is in process. Isolated, her tribe is in a tiny town lacking education and jobs so there are few opportunities for making money. Times are tough and the nation holds a $1 a week donation campaign and hosts fundraisers on the idyllic reservation. The Hassanamisco reservation is unique in Massachusetts having never been owned or occupied by non-native people, remaining the property of the members of the Nipmuc Tribe for the past 400 years. Salim’s mother is African American. “My father accepted Islam when he was in Massachusetts, my mother accepted in DC, they married as Muslims and we moved down to the DC area,” shares Salim. She wasn’t reared on the Hassanamisco Indian Reservation, the third smallest reservation in the United States, with her cousins. A mother of two children, a boy and a girl, this software engineer wants to spread the message of education amongst her tribe. “I want to learn and work with Native Americans. We are known as a people with no education.”

Uncomfortable with some of the rituals of the Nipmuc such as rain dancing which make her feel like she is involved in shirk, Salim picks and chooses parts of her culture that don’t conflict with her deen, so she skipped the Strawberry Moon Nipmuc Nation celebration last June. “I don’t want to be involved in some ceremonies, I am Muslim first and foremost.” Most of the tribe considers themselves Christian, but they participate in the chantings at the powwow. “They are Christians in regular life.” She thinks that the ancestral religion included worshiping many gods. Salim wants to study their history and learn about this. ”We always [learn] about smallpox and how we were kicked off our land, but not about religion.” Neither she nor her father have faced any issues with the tribe about their Islam. She has an aunt who is Jewish, and another is Christian. “I can reach out and touch a Nipmuc cookbook- I want to try everything other

As a young girl she used to dream about venturing on a vision quest to find her Indian name. But now she says she was born Rasheeda Sharif and that’s who she is. “Native names are different, you can start off with one and as you grow and develop as a person your name can change.

called 911. Windows were opened, the heater turned off, and the family rushed outside into the chilly eve of November. Over 10 police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks came to the scene within the next few minutes. An initial carbon monoxide test was taken, and it showed everybody had some of the deadly combination in their body. All seven members of the family were quickly rushed to the hospital. The youngest siblings were taken to Children's Hospital, while the others were admitted together at the nearby Washington General Hospital. The doctors told the family that had they slept and stayed in the house for another two hours, they may have died. Ahmad says he has heard of carbon monoxide poisoning but “real experience is nothing but a real tragedy!” For the next several hours, everybody was monitored closely and given oxygen masks to replenish their oxygen supply and to expel the carbon monoxide out of their body. After several hours, Ahmad still had a very high level of CO in his body, exacerbated by his diabetes, so he was flown by helicopter to the Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. There, he was put in a gas chamber with the pressure altered to help bring his body back to normal. The pressure forced him to vomit a pound of food,

which helped him to clean out his system. “The landlord found the exhaust system of the furnace clogged with a bird or a squirrel[‘s] nest! As a result, fumes were coming back in the house [that] produce[d]excessive monoxide,” the father told the Muslim Link. As daylight savings time ended and the country change their clocks back, an annual ritual that is imperative to health is to install or check carbon monoxide alarms. It is the law in Maryland. Passed in 2007, the law requires that hardwired CO alarms are installed in a central location outside of each sleeping area. Similarly, Virginia even allows tenants to install carbon monoxide detectors in rental properties if they believe it is necessary to ensure their safety. DC follows the International Residential Code. According to DC Fire Marshall Faus requirements for smoke alarms and Carbon Monoxide alarms in Washington DC, include one on every floor and centrally located outside of sleeping areas: at least one has to be hardwired, for the rest can be battery operated. “Alhamdulillah. It will take some time to [be] clear of CO. We as a family felt it was a big test from Allah,” says Ahmad. The biggest lesson that the family learnt from their nightmare on that haunted night was the saying of the Prophet “tie your camel and have tawakkul on Allah.” The Ahmad family did not have alarms installed in their rental home at the time of the incident. Since then, they have installed carbon monoxide alarms near their sleeping areas.

ing area and on every level of the home and in other locations where required by applicable laws, codes or standards. For the best protection, interconnect all CO alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.

• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement and mounting height.

• Choose a CO alarm that has the label of a recognized testing laboratory. • Call your local fire department’s non-emergency number to find out what number to call if the CO alarm sounds.

• Test CO alarms at least once a month; replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

• If the audible trouble signal sounds, check for low batteries. If the battery is low, replace it. If it still sounds, call the fire department.

• If the CO alarm sounds, immediately move to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door. Make sure everyone inside the home is accounted for. Call for help from a fresh air location and stay there until emergency personnel.

• If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Do not run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not covered with snow.

• During and after a snowstorm, make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow build-up.

• A generator should be used in a well-ventilated location outdoors away from windows, doors and vent openings.

• Gas or charcoal grills can produce CO — only use outside.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif mentioned a cessation of drone attacks in his recent meeting with Obama. According to top secret memos released right before his visit, it is apparent that the Pakistani government is briefed about the attacks ahead of time. “She was the string that held the pearls together,” testified Rafiq Rahman of his mother Momina Bibi, a village favorite. Four of Rahman’s children were injured in the attack, as were four of his brother’s children. The school teacher relayed that many in his community have been killed. “Usually drones strike two times, to kill the relatives who come out to help,” Zubair Rehman, his 13 year old son is chronicled in Greenwald’s documentary, Unmanned: America’s Drone Wars. Jennifer Gibson of Living with the Drones project (currently staff attorney with Reprieve) as well as filmmaker Robert Greenwald also testified. Greenwald hopes that the briefing will begin the process of demanding investigation. Mahdi Bray of the American Muslim Alliance expressed his condolences to the family on behalf of American Muslims. “It is a real tragedy,” said Bray, “a high-tech wild Wild west.” He said that President Obama Administration is both a Nobel peace prize winner and a constitutional lawyer yet he is clearly violating international law. We had volunteers from every walk of life showing up every weekend to do framing, dry walling, spackling, sanding, laying tiles, cleaning up and helping wherever necessary. It was very gratifying to see so many volunteers every weekend. Many families brought food for the volunteers; pizza shops got involved by giving us a discount. There was an abundance of food, to the point we made a schedule for families who wanted to bring food. Volunteers came from Virginia, Baltimore, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and New York to help. We

Safia Khan has been working with Halalco since 1998 as the office manager and the Islamic book section, “I don't have any words; he was considerate and forgiving with the employees,” she pauses with emotion,”he was so friendly; his customer service was excellent, especially for haram and halal he would go out of the way- if we didn’t carry in the store and the item was requested, he would do whatever he can to get it.“ Chida started an inmate program for the Halalco books section, supplying Islamic books and supplies to correctional facilities. “Inmates don’t make much [money]; sometimes they don’t have the money for shipping or for the items and [Chida] would write it off,” says Khan, “We sell the prison stamps at a loss to help inmates.” Mukhtar Ahmed was a young 26 year old from Kandahar, Afghanistan, looking for his first job. Despite several attempts he could not find work until Chida offered him a job without demanding prior experience. “I don't know another nice person like him, if there were more people like him in the world, there will be peace in the world,” says Ahmed. Over the years, Ahmed noticed people

started to get donations from the communities’ extended families from many states, Canada and England. We wanted to keep our community together during the construction so we negotiated with St. Mark’s Church to rent their multi-purpose room. They were generous and willing to give us a member’s discount for rental and free storage for our prayer rugs. We held Jumaah prayers and during Ramadaan, weekend Iftars and dinners at the church. Our community bonded and even expanded during this testing time. We still needed money. We took loans from community members and progressed slowly but surely. We negotiated for everything purchased and many companies were accommodating. During the financial meltdown and massive layoffs, donations dwindled. We were faced with coming to visit Chida, no one knows about them but Chida was paying for their rent, medicine, giving them money. For the 22 years that Ahmed knew him, he never acted like a boss; “he never fired one single person, if there was any problem he would try to solve it.” Today Ahmed manages the meat department at Halalco. In a Farsi accent, he stumbles for words to describe his boss. “He was a nice person, the Muslim community will miss him. He treated us like a father treats a good son.” “The things I am telling you are alike a drop in from the river that was Brother Mateen,” he says in a wistful voice. As for the future of Halalco, Northern Virginia largest halal grocery store, Rahman says the team is more committed than ever to Chida’s mission, and will not compromise in providing halal meat. “We are very cautious that everything is 100 percent halal; we would rather trash it than sell it to a Muslim.” When he first started Chida was driving to farms in Shenandoah Valley or Maryland’s Eastern Shore doing zabihah by hand and delivering it to the residents of his locality. “Fifty years back, when there was no concept of halal in United States; Mateen Chida gave a very serious thought to it and accepted the challenge to introduce halal meat in United States. Setting aside all his official responsibilities, he purchased a truck and used to go 150 miles to the slaughter house and bring the halal meat after zabiha [on] a small scale,”

a money shortage to finish the project for Ramadan 2009. We needed to approach this differently and again reviewed what else is needed to complete the project. We listed every item: lights, toilets, drywall, bricks, paint, tile, carpet and the estimated cost. We contacted Lowes and Home Depot and set up financing ranging from 18 to 24 months with no interest. Alhamdulillah, donors used their credit, some increased their credit line to purchase materials for the project and we in turn guaranteed that all payment to those companies will be made before the interest became due. We were very confident, committed and determined and that gave many people encouragement to come forward and help. It was a joy to see so many volunteers. They exemplified “fi sabilillah.” We had many setbacks, tiring days and sleepless nights, and finally we opened on shares cousin Osman Chida. Ahmed says Chida built this business without interest and his customers were happy with him. “Whoever comes in the store is sorry for his loss.” Ahmed, now a father of four, wants all Muslim businesses to do their job right, “there should not be cheating or lying; should be pure; absolutely halal.” According to Yelp reviews several people of other faiths frequent HalalCo for everything from industrial strength kebab skewers to butcher cut fresh meat. “I remember, I spent countless hours in his store working during the summers, especially during Eid-Ul-Adha. His wife [is] the sweetest person, always had amazing dinner[s] ready for me when I got back from work with him. What impressed me was he worked crazy, tiring hours, yet he treated every employee there as if they were his children or sibling. He never raised his voice and conducted every transaction with the utmost integrity. Though I don’t have as many employees [in] my own company, I strive to be like him when it comes to how to treat people,” shares Ali Abid Hussain, his only sister's son. Chida was one of the early pioneers of Islamic work in North America. “When the MSA decided to acquire its own printing facility and purchased a small press in Maryland when (now late) Mohammad Fazil Khan, an engineer, and Abdul Mateen Chida, also an engineer from

the first Taraweeh in Ramadaan 2009. The fire marshall initially rejected our request to open the masjid, but after Jummah on the said day and some very persistent and diligent work we managed to fulfill the promise to the community. Our community was very pleased with the results. Alhamdulillah, loans that were to be repaid were being converted to donations and the remaining loans were paid within 24 months. We completed the project for $1.75 million. This was a very rewarding experience. ISWA is truly blessed and we are very grateful for everyone who helped on this project, and continue to be a part of this growing family. Sheik Zamal Housein is the current president of ISWA. Minnesota and a former MSA president, left their jobs to run the press. This move allowed the MSA the freedom to print. “Challenged by mainstream printing companies’ refusal to print Islamic literature, the MSA bought International Graphics to produce competitively priced Islamic literature and publications and to provide some revenue for itself,” writes Azhar Azeez of ISNA. Chida ran the press for seven years. According to ISNA newsletters, Chida recalled that the printing press was very old and that, for a long time, their work was quite time-consuming: "We had to collate the newsletters by hand, and though we had a typewriter, there was no composer." Sleeping under the press to get the work done, this man did the laborious work, benefiting later generations of American Muslims. “[His Janazah] is a testament to Br Matin’s good life. Chida was known for his kindness, wisdom, foresight, generosity and much more,” writes Ismail Laher, of the Shirley Gate masjid. havior. They highlight all of the charitable etiquette, behavior, and mannerisms that are encouraged, promoted, or endorsed by the general community members. They are part of the foundation of Iman. The Vision: Forty years ago, a contingent group of individuals concerted strong efforts to leave their native homeland in Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, and relocate to the mainland of The United States. The emigrants formed a composite number of relatives, extended family members, friends, and associates. They settled, work diligently, soon developed a comprehensive plan for advancing their position, and a progressive vision that helped to expand the boarders of Islam in the continental mainland of the Western Hemisphere. New seeds that took root and then flourished were planted, by these Muslim newcomers; their objectives were ambitious. The Islamic Society of Washington (ISWA) established its nascent home in the Washington, DC / Maryland area by 1973; the small community gradually advanced their agenda, and worked tirelessly to bring about the establishment of a model community that represented the various aspects of Islam, its community life, and its supranational diversity. At a later time, other Muslim families from the Caribbean also migrated to the states, settled, and increased the number of the original consortium that made the U.S. their new home. Additional members that joined the original community comprised Muslims from Africa, the Middle-East, the Indian Sub-Continent, Asia, other parts of Latin America, mainland America [indigenous Muslims, including NativeAmericans], and some European countries. In the early 70‘s, comprehensive efforts by the original group would yield tremendous results. The challenges were many, but not insuperable as constant determination helped to forge an active community life among the members of ISWA. Their sense of responsibility, dedication, and sincerity served as a platform to catapult them into higher activity. Eventually, their efforts were supported or joined by other mainland Muslims. This continued to provide the community with valuable profession-

CONTINUED| 21 alism, expanding membership, and access to vital resources. One of the commendable aspects of the community members is their qualitative pursuit of education. The community created a viable conduit for the ongoing education of its future generations, in various spheres. This meant that the community’s first priority was to educate the Muslim youth about Islam, provide them a community life, strong domestic foundation, and encourage the pursuit of primary, secondary, and college or university level education. The Harvest: Today, that vision has been fulfilled in the youth, and continues to be a strong legacy for ISWA. It has manifestly resulted in the return of certain numbers of young people that continue to carry on the work of the community, in community services, professional development, and volunteerism. They are involved in different levels of the Muslim community from MSA’s (Muslim Student Associations), to coordinating seasonal religious programs, youth organizations, media projects, regional conferences, and young adult representatives, or spokes persons. Strengthening the youth programs is part of the continuing vision and endeavor of the community. Emphasis is stressed on the leadership role of young people, are there are future plans to accommodate their needs, by improving existing programs, and creating vital new ones. This includes modifying areas within the current masjid to avail further accessibility to the growing number of young adult Muslims. Within four decades the members have established a recognized, flourishing, pro-active suburban community, where a masjid built from the ground up serves as the nerve-center and hub of Muslim activity. Halaqas (Learning Circles) provide teaching of, instruction in, and introduction to various Islamic themes, or topics. This includes such things as: learning Arabic, studying Qur’aan, explanation of the Principles of Iman (Muslim Faith), Saturday classes for the youth, seminars on domestic violence, personal, family, and marriage counseling, Nikkah (performance of legal Islamic marriage ceremony), also reception rooms for various weekend, seasonal celebrations, and community uses etc. Other indispensable parts of the community service are zakat (yearly compulsive contribution after the Month

of Ramadhan) and sadaqa (regularly collected charitable donation) funds, which help to assist those in need. A suq (store or market), operating about four days weekly, is conveniently located on the premesis, offers male and female attire, and other paraphernalia. ISWA’s Jumua’ (Friday Prayer Service) is primarily conducted by Imam Faisal Khan, and at other times a guest Khatib (individual that conducts the talk of a religious theme), or Imam (spiritual community leader) is invited to deliver the Jumua’ khutba (sermon). Janaza (funeral prayer services) can also be offered at the masjid.

Haytham Younis was consulted, an artist conception was created for the building project, representative model mock-up built, and a later target date for groundbreaking was set. Commendably, It was completed with funds raised entirely by the community, without outside financing- Al-Hamdulilah (All Praise is Due to Allah)! That was three years ago! Since then, the life of the community continues in its new building; it has seen quite a bit of activity in the last three years since the celebratory official opening. ISWA is vibrant, focused, and poised to carry on its work into the next generation... and on into the future!

In addition, ISWA engages in outreach activities to the community at large, and inter-faith dialogue, and has established a positive reputation amongst its neighbors, over the years. The administration with the support of its active community members also endeavors to represents itself on different political issues, through cultivating a reputation of Muslims that voice their sentiments concerning general community, regional, national, and international issues. ISWA has represented itself nationally, and has received recognition from the U.S. government, as an esteemed guest at the White House during the Obama Administration, and also by members of Congress. It continues to develop meaningful interaction with Maryland State regional and local representatives. In the interest of asserting Muslim civic conscientiousness as a positive force on the political scene, ISWA continues to develop, influence positive social change, and advocate justice for all citizens, especially Muslims that are misrepresented politically, and globally by the media.

This past September, 2013 marked the 40th Anniversary of ISWA. Celebration of the anniversary was a warm affair. Imam Faizul Khan presided, Master of Ceremonies and Board Member Riyad Alie hosted the affair, Niwad Awad of CAIR gave the key note opening speech of congratulations, founding members Dr. Fazil Alie, ISWA;s President Zamal Houssein welcomed the attendees, the Ambassador of the Republic of Guyana gave a brief speech in recognition of the community’s successful endeavors, and Nancy Navarro representative President of the Montgomery County Council presented a citation of recognition to ISWA, from the county. Also, Muhammad Sanousi from The Islamic Society of North America was present. Other members of the regional area, Muslim activists, community workers, students, including visitors were present to witness the affair, and give their salutations.

THE PROGRESS: Forty years of dedicated service has created a resilient religious organization, which recognizes its pervasive responsibilities to its members and the general community. It continues to evolve, improve, and increase its ability to enhance the life of the Muslim community. Formerly, for about ten years, ISWA’s base masjid was in a converted house, located at 2701 Briggs Chaney Road, in Silver Spring, MD 20905. In a word, its membership outgrew the physical building; thus, plans were concerted to build a facility that would provide a much greater economy of space. Muslim architectural designer

In conclusion, the 40th anniversary of the ISWA represents one of many milestones along the pathway of Islam, which its community members have jointly journeyed upon. The community continues to strive, refine its purpose, and stay focused on its objective. The challenges for Islam in America will continue to come and go, yet the commitment to serve Allah Subhanahu wa ta’la- (Allah The Glorious and Most High) merits collective responsibility, cultivation, and nourishment for the seeds of Islam to continue to flourish. It is a tradition, and legacy that ISWA has worked hard to establish.

Dar-us-Salaam, based in College Park, Maryland. announced it was looking at the property as a potential new home for Al-Huda School and Dar-us-Salaam's religious services and projects in August 2012. After consulting with the community in numerous town hall meetings, Dar-us-Salaam began a comprehensive feasability study including zoning, environmental, water, and traffic studies to ensure the property would meet the current and long-term needs of Al-Huda School and the congregation. The property, located just off of Interstate-70 and Route 32 in the Western part of Howard County about 10-minutes from Ellicot City, is the former site of Woodmont Academy, a catholic school which closed in 2010. Woodmont Academy invested heavily in the property, installing storm water management and electrical infrastructure, commercial septic and

well systems, building a private driveway, parking lots, and a brand new school facility with an indoor gym, and installing 5-modular buildings at a cost close to $10 million. Woodmont Academy planned for massive growth and applied for and received Howard County approvals to build a campus of over a dozen buildings and a total of 325,000 square feet. The campus would acccomodate around 1,800 students, staff, and worshipers. The school ended up closing and the approvals expired last summer, but a precedent was set for the property which makes a strong case for Dar-us-Salaam getting approved for a similar campus. The conditional use process generally takes 6-9 months in front of a zoning hearing examiner and possibly the Howard County Board of Appeals. "All indications, studies, and discussion we've had with planners, engineers, officials, and attorneys make us very confident that we will get the approvals we need to begin moving the school and operations there next year," said Sayeed Jaweed, a member

of the board. Dar-us-Salaam's plan submited to the county (the main part of the campus is shown above) is for a campus serving around 2,000 students, staff, and worshipers, with a build-out in phases over 12 years which would eventually include 275,300 square feet of building space, 629 parking spaces, gymnasiums and indoor swimming pools for both boys and girls, a masjid, a commons building, and educational facilities. "We really need to community to understand that this project must move forward for the sake of Allah, and to have confidence in our mission to provide the best education for our children. Interview: Muslim Mothers in Chiapas, Mexico Source: “World of Umm” blog, 10/23/2013

back with them to Chiapas. How many Muslim converts are living in Chiapas now and what is their community like?

Nahela Morales is a Mexican mother of one currently living in New Jersey, USA. She serves as the National Hispanic Outreach Coordinator for WhyIslam, a dawah project of ICNA.

Currently, there’s an estimated 300 converts living in Chiapas, but the number is still growing. Chiapas actually has the largest number of Muslim converts living in one location in the whole of Mexico. Pretty much all of those who converted are related to one another through the same two families and speak Tzotzil, the native dialect of the people.

Recently, she and a team of volunteers traveled to Mexico to give dawah and provide aid for impoverished families. It was during this trip that she visited the city of San Cristobal de Las Casas in the State of Chiapas, home to a growing number of indigenous converts to Islam. This is her story of the Muslim mothers living there.

The masjid is called Masjid Al-Kauthur and is located pretty much in the middle of the rainforest. It’s very small, maybe the size of an office conference room, and is made of mud cement. Despite the size, the masjid still offers daily congregational salat five times a day and the Jummah prayer on Fridays. It’s open for the both men and women.The Khutbas are given by one of two of the oldest Muslims in Chiapas who happen to be brothers. One of them studied in Spain and has been Muslim for 14 years and the other one has been Muslim for 18 years.

Where exactly is Chiapas and what kind of place is it? Chiapas is in the south of Mexico, bordering Guatemala, Central America, Vera Cruz, Mexico, and Tabasco, Mexico. It’s a very humid, tropical area with lots of natural vegetation; it’s a rainforest. Culturally, it’s a very rich place with lots of tourism, especially in San Cristobal de Las Casas. The people who live there are predominantly indigenous made up of Mayans and non-Mayans. How did Islam originally reach Chiapas? This is kind of a tricky question to answer because unfortunately Islam didn’t come in a very truthful way. It was brought by a group of Spaniards who adhered to a specific sect of Islam and held onto practices that were not actually part of the religion. When they migrated to the area, they built industry and created jobs for the indigenous people who lived there. But the jobs were not fair. They forced the people to work from Fajr time until 12 midnight for a pay of only about $10 per week. Alhamdulilah, the indigenous people

accepted Islam but ran into disagreements and were outcast by the Spaniards when they tried to subject them to practices that were not from the religion, such as never being able to speak to their family members. This caused a lot of fighting and separation between the people and basically

Some who felt that these ways could not be from Islam traveled to Mexico City, about a 12 hour bus ride from Chiapas, searching for other Muslims who could teach them the correct practices of the religion and they brought those teachings

In terms of resources, the community is very poor. The work that’s available is very limited and the pay is inconsistent. You have agricultural workers, carpenters, construction workers, and taxi drivers, but none of them have a regular income. If it rains, the construction worker can’t work. If no one in the community needs something fixed, the carpenter can’t work. If the taxi driver is low on money, he can’t buy gas to run his cab. When a holiday comes and people only have four chickens to slaughter, that’s what they slaughter. During Ramadan, they fast all day and then break their fast with a piece of tor>> mothers Pg 26

tilla, some salt, and call it a day. But the contentment is unexplainable. There, it’s really just them and Allah, and that’s it. To break fast with a piece of tortilla and salt, that shattered me. They are all very united mashaAllah and help one another out. The whole community comes together to spread funds amongst everyone. If one family manages to grow a crop of tomatoes, they’ll split their tomatoes with the other families so everyone can eat tomato, mashaAllah. They’re really a living display of what it means to be one ummah. Tell me about the Muslim mothers in Chiapas. Most of the families live in the outskirts of San Cristobal, about a 15-20 minute drive away from the main part of the city. But it’s known by all that they’re Muslims. Even when people don’t know to call them “Muslim”, they call them the “different people who live in that town”. They have told me that for the most part they don’t feel any different because they speak the local dialect. But those who are from different tribes and speak Spanish have more difficulty mingling in and can feel rejected at times. But in general, the non-Muslims in the area are used to seeing the Muslims around so they don’t treat them as strangers or foreigners. MashaAllah, one of the things that struck me the most about these women was their attire. It really impressed me how they adapted to a new way of life in Islam but still hold on to their cultural identity and dress, usually a long wool skirt tied with a string belt, a colorful blouse, a small sweater, and then the hijab. So they’re identified by others as being Muslim because of their hijab, but the rest of their attire makes it known that they are part of the indigenous community. 99% of the Muslim women in Chiapas are stay-at-home moms and about 99% of them all breastfeed their babies mashaAllah. Most of the women have at least 3 children. We saw some families with as many as 6 or 7 children.

The houses are very poor. The walls are made of lumber that’s tied together, kind of like when you tie Popsicle sticks together to make a wall for a toy house. Some of the women have to hang plastic on the inside to help keep the water out. The whole house is just one room that’s divided into areas by curtains. The beds are just mats laid on the floor. The bathroom is an outhouse with no drainage; you just poor water in before you go. The kitchen is run on a gas tank and when that gas runs out, the women have to cook in someone else’s house. Most of the homes don’t have refrigerators. But the families don’t have a lot of food in the first place so those who do have fridges just share their space with the ones who don’t. And look at us! We have fridges full of food and still open the door ten times before deciding that we have nothing at all, subhanAllah. The women have to walk to the river to wash their laundry, bring it back wet, and then hang it outside to dry. A couple of the women whose husbands manage to bring home a little bit of money use the funds to sew and embroider items to sell such as mats or blouses. Because of lack of resources, the women almost always cook together. One sister only has beans, another only has rice, so they come together so all the families can have a little bit of everything. But even in such conditions, the women are very content and satisfied with everything that Allah, subhana wa ta ala, has given them. The whole time that I was there, I never heard one complaint from a single one of them about their situation. They’re always smiling and they’re always together. They’re very united. When the men are out, they’re helping each other with the children, or cooking together, or working together to sell things. They have that true peace that comes with accepting the Qadr of Allah and an amazing sisterhood mashaAllah. As a mother and Mexican convert to Islam yourself, what sort of connection did you build with the mothers in Chiapas? When we got to Masjid Al-Kauthur and I saw these sisters, the first thing I did was start crying. And then they started crying. It was as if our sisterhood in Islam just immediately brought

us together and made us so happy to see eachother. The hugs were long and the tears just kept flowing. It was an amazing feeling that I’ve never felt, and with people who I had never met in my life. The bond of sisterhood in Islam that brings us together is very powerful. It’s truly a connection beyond words. Take away the environment and the lack of resources and I found that these mothers had many similarities with Muslims mothers around the world, regardless of where in the world you live. The way they nourished their children and the way I nourished my own child were similar. The way they taught their children and encouraged their children to pray, especially the older ones, I felt was similar too. I mean, there were so many similarities. And I think it’s because no matter the situation we are in, as mothers we always want the best for our children and we care for them. We’re always the nurturers, the caregivers, and the protectors of our children. What do you think is the greatest Islamic lesson we can learn from the Muslim moms in Chiapas? The biggest lesson is to put Islam as a priority. Even with their lack of resources, Islam is the priority for these mothers. And it shows that you don’t need money, or a fancy house to pass on the single greatest thing that Allah has given us, the Qur’an. Even though they had little knowledge, they made sure to pass on whatever they knew of the religion to their children. As soon as they learned something, they passed it on mashaAllah. We put so many obstacles on ourselves that we forget our priority should always be to insert the values of the Quran and Islam into our families. These women in Chiapas don’t have Friday night classes with guest speakers, or Al-Maghrib institute, or online halaqahs, but they are there learning their religion and passing it on while so many of us here (in the US) don’t. Even in terms of manners and character. I will never forget little Omar, who was only about 5 or 6 years old, but he was the most helpful little boy I ever saw. He would run back and forth to help us and thank us. The lack of resources and education has not stopped them from teaching their families manners.

No matter where in the world we are, or what our situation is, Islam is one and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, is one. We should be teaching our families these two things no matter what. Don’t take it for granted. Lack of time or money shouldn’t be an excuse for us to not teach our children the lessons they need to learn. And I say this as a full-time working mom. Is there anything else you would like to add? At one point when we were all cooking together, some questions came up about our lifestyle. After we answered them, we asked the women if they would ever want come to America. They said no. And I didn’t expect that. It surprised me because they were so full of questions and happy with all of the answers we gave them, but they had no desire whatsoever to take part in it. The lesson I brought home from this is that when Allah, subhana wa ta ala, chooses things for us and we accept what He’s given us, He puts that satisfaction in our hearts. In America, we have everything and we always want more. But in Chiapas, they don’t have and they’re content, subhanAllah. There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t think of my family in Chiapas and how accepting they are of Allah’s Qadr. Sometimes we’re complaining over the most insignificant things when we’re really rich. We’re filthy rich. And not because we have a roof over our heads, but because we have Islam. Sometimes we focus so much on our actual hardships that we forget about Islam. But these women in Chiapas aren’t like that. They don’t even know if they’re going to have food to last them the day but they’re okay with it. It’s amazing subhanAllah. NY Man Put On No-Fly List After Refusing To Spy For FBI, Lawsuit Says By Hunter Stuart

The Huffington Post, 10/07/2013 Is the FBI using its notorious no-fly list as a way to retaliate against Muslim Americans who refuse to spy for them? It might be, according to a new lawsuit. Muhammed Tanvir, of Queens, N.Y., says he was asked by the FBI to spy on the Muslim community to which he belongs and was put on the no-fly list when he refused, Courthouse News reported on Thursday. Now, with the backing of the Center for Constitutional Rights, he's suing officials in the FBI, the TSA and the De-

partment of Homeland Security. Tanvir's lawsuit notes that he is a lawful permanent resident who works at a dollar store in the Bronx and does not pose a terror threat. Tanvir wants the FBI's alleged practice of punishing Muslims who refuse to cooperate with the agency's spying programs declared unconstitutional, Courthouse News notes. The FBI declined to comment when contacted by The Huffington Post. However, Tanvir's story is not so unusual. Kevin Iraniha, a pro-Palestinian activist

Islamic Teachings Predate Modern Science on Using Animals in Lab Tests By Sarah Khasawinah

Muslim Link Contributing Writer The 64th Annual National Meeting of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) convened in Baltimore from October 27-31 bringing together scientists and policy makers in academia and industry from across the globe, and if the theme of the conference could be described in two words, they would be “best practices.” Participants discussed the latest developments in animal research to advance both human and animal health. The potential of what can be accomplished with animals in the laboratory is at its greatest. Scientists today can breed animals to contain exactly the genes of interest, often those that are hypothesized to be associated with diseases or conditions. For instance, a scientist can make a mouse with Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease, or even one prone to obesity. These animal models could help us find treatments or cures for these diseases in humans. While creating genetically modified animals is expanding the horizon for discoveries in healthcare, there is a need for increased caution and improved technique. Dr. Melissa Larson, of the International Society for Transgenic Technologies, explained that the national average efficiency rate in breeding transgenic mice is about 10-20%. The remaining mice are born wild type, without the desired genotype. These extra mice, she explained, are “typically euthanized.” Within AALAS, a growing movement calls for saving the lives of research animals and using them only when necessary. These best practices are the 3R’s: replace, reduce, and refine. The fact that Allah created animals like humans, in communities, shows that we should apply our same moral standards to them. While we have dominion over animals, “He (God) it is Who made you vicegerents on earth” (Holy Qur'an, 35:39), our role as vicegerents comes with great responsibility. Allah commands us to serve with reason, and warns against injustice: explained each of these R’s with a question and natural answer: 1. Is information from animals always needed when we think it is? We should replace animal tests with alternative methods, such as computer simulations or in vitro models with human cells. 2. Are as many animals needed as we think? We should reduce the number of animals used by performing the experiment with care and precision the first time, without unnecessary duplications. 3. Now, while using the minimum number of animals and only when necessary, we ask: how can we improve the welfare of these animals? We should refine procedures to minimize potential animal pain. Scientists are embracing the 3Rs for many reasons. Firstly, these best practices represent a pathway to better science. Chapman further explained, “animals may be poor predictors of humans. We are not necessarily getting translation from animals to humans.” Other factors include company incentives and government pledges to move away from animal use; better selection of drug chemicals before testing on animals; changing cultural perceptions around animal research; increased ability to experiment with human cells rather than live animals; and financial savings. Dr. Joanne Zurlo, Director of Science

Strategy at the Johns Hopkins Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT), attended the conference and said of AALAS, “they read our mission statement and say ‘we agree with all of this.’” When asked if CAAT faces resistance, Zurlo answered, “There is always skepticism because they don’t know what side we’re on. We are on the side of science.” Zurlo elaborated, “If they [animals] are not kept under the best conditions, then they won’t be reliable research subjects.” It is becoming clear that advocates for alternatives to animal testing, and scientists who use animals, are on the same side. William Russell, a zoologist, and Rex Burke, a microbiologist, first developed the 3R’s in 1959. In the 1980’s, many countries and laboratories began instituting policies to promote and enforce the 3Rs, and at the 2013 AALAS National Meeting, these guidelines stood out as the way of the future. While promoting animal welfare as a means for better results may sound like a modern notion, this idea has been made obligatory in Islam since revelation. Animals, in Islam, represent signs of Allah’s omnipotence and beauty. Like us, animals have their own laws and communities, and Allah explains in the Qur’an: “There is not an animal on earth, nor a

One such hadith says: “The Prophet passed by a camel who was so emaciated that his back had shrunk to his belly, and said: ‘fear God in these beasts - ride them in good health and free them from work while they are still in good health’.” ABU DAWUD These guidelines from the Qur’an and Sunnah existed before the 3Rs, and are incumbent upon ever Muslim. Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him declared: “There is no man who kills (even) a sparrow or anything smaller, without its deserving it, but God will question him about it.” Narrated by Ibn’Umar and by Abdallah bin ‘Amar bin al-Nas. While we embrace the 3Rs of today, we ought to also return to what we know from the Qur’an and Sunnah which provides the divine best practices for animal welfare and better results, in this life and forever.

Muharram: The Other Month of Fasting It is the best of months for general voluntary fasts, after Ramadan. It is especially recommended to fast the 10th of Muharram (known as the Day of `Ashura’), with a day before it or after it. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, quoting Kasani’s al-Bada’i`] Extracts from Ibn Rajab’s Lata’if alMa`arif, regarding the month of Muharram: The Virtues of Fasting in the Month of Muharram and Its First Ten Days: Muslim reported from Abu Hurayra (Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said , “The best of fasts after the month of Ramadan are in the Month of Allah, which you call Muharram. And the best of prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer.” [Muslim, 1163] This refers to general voluntary fasts according to Imam Ibn Rajab : These are best in the month of Muharram, just as the best general voluntary prayer is night prayer. The virtue and honor of this month can

be attested to by the fact that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) called it, ‘the Month of Allah.’ (Shahr Allah) Such ascription is only made by Allah to the most special of His creation, such as the ascription of the Prophets Muhammad, Ibrahim, Ishaq, Ya`qub, and others to his slavehood (Allah’s peace and blessings be on them all), and His ascription of the House (Ka`ba) and the camel to himself. Given that Allah ascribed fasting, between all spiritual works, to Himself

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) also said, “The fasting person has two joys: one when he breaks his fast, and the other when he meets his Lord.”[Muslim] Night Prayer As for voluntary night prayer (qiyam allayl), it is superior to voluntary prayer during the day because it is closer to secrecy, and nearer to sincerity (ikhlas). Allah Most High said, “Lo! the vigil of the night is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain.” [Qur’an, 73.9] This is because the time of the night vigil (tahajjud) is the best of times for voluntary prayer, and the closest a servant gets to his Lord. It is a time when the doors of the skies are opened, supplications answered, and needs fulfilled. Allah Most High has praised those who wake up at night in His remembrance, supplication, seeking forgiveness, and intimate entreating (munajat), saying, >> muharram Pg 32

The days that ensued were filled with sleepless nights, very long hours at the hospital (Sinai Hospital, NW Baltimore- where our family member was already affiliated with out-patient services), constant traveling back and forth, shifts of visitation, consultation with medical professionals, and support agencies. In as many days, another Muslim family didn’t hesitate to assist us, while we endeavored to seek much needed help. Primarily, we used the above Direct Help-Line: 224-4324 etc., others that knew what we were going through also said they would seek the action line in our behalf, and they did. So, what is this “Help-Line” and number? It is the formulary number of salah (prayers, which Believers make each day from the rise at morn (Al-fajr), until the retirement before bed (Al-ishaa), and then some in the latter third of the night (including: Qiyam-ul-Layl and Tahajjud). With such a support network, and constant determination the resolution process in our case became more defined. It required persistence, inquiry, review, and finally a reasonable treatment plan. Unfortunately, the mundane aspect of fulfilling the needs of our family member was fraught with obstacles, uncertainty, and frustration. During the week of the impending tribulation, our family immediately assumed the first responders’ mode. We were already predisposed to the initial course of action we had to take... Prior Knowledge And Preparedness: Keeping Spiritual, Intellectual, Psychological, And Cognitive Health What was the problem that led to the crisis? In the previous years, our family member experienced extreme anxiety challenges, which led to certain levels of disorientation, discomfort, introversion, and a sense of social instability. Sometimes symptoms can manifest in the form of extreme moods swings, anxiety, phobia, paranoia, depression, fits of crying, aggressive behavior, suicidal tendencies, hallucination, hearing voices, insomnia, experiencing nightmares, schizophrenia, hysteria, or

bipolar disorders. It depends on given circumstances, thus an individual can manifest isolated symptoms, only one, or a combination of them. Additionally, certain other forms of physiological and psychological disorder will also affect a person’s ability to rationalize properly, complete analytical tasks, articulate, or process simple and more complex information. Nevertheless, none of these symptomatic behaviors can be properly assessed or evaluated without proper diagnosis, by a trained professional. Once a diagnosis is properly made, and symptoms well-defined, a course of action along with a treatment plan can be implemented. Part of the regimen of treatment will often be centered on administering medication when applicable, non-drug counseling, check-up, on-going therapy, continued education concerning personal experiences with the disorder, inpatient or out-patient clinical care, and personal management. Respectively, professionals in the field of psychiatry, psychology, social work, care-giving, along with additional medically trained individuals work together to establish a more holistically-centered, individualized needs assessment. This will help to expedite an individual’s ability to cope with identified problems, and apply suitable alternatives to deal with them effectively. More serious problems may require a protracted or even aggressive intervention. During the stabilization phase or normalization period, professional counseling through routine out-patient sessions will offer monitoring of a person’s progress. Such sessions can be less clinical in nature and more casual- as clientèle / consumers advance in progressive independent functionality in their daily lives. A special team of people help to administer care to persons in need that have specific health challenges of the above nature. When care is given properly, in a broad range of methods and/or applications, the prognosis or outcome can be dramatically beneficial. This means that positive results will enable the individual to resume their basic daily tasks, with little problems. In our family member’s previous case, progressive improvement, stability, and optimum functionality etc. was easily achieved. As such, personal manage-

ment (of the disability) under the circumstances became second nature, and episodes of distress were kept to a bare minimum, if any. I mentioned all of the above things, because it represents similar challenges that other Muslim families face. Recently, unanticipated events occurred and it posed serious challenges to our family as a whole. Our ability to respond to the crisis placed us in a position to make difficult decisions, which might have otherwise been in the hands of individuals that did not have our family member’s best interest at heart. It is true; we decided to seek medical assistance or intervention, and then pursuant to this we encountered a number of unexpected, unpleasant barriers. It was certainly not what happened before; instead, we were in the defense mode...! The Afternoon Of The Emergency Stems A Long Day’s Journey Into Night...! Particular procedures, protocols, and strictures of legal consent were implemented as routine steps. Before long, our family member was in the hands of the hospital administration, admitted, and legally bound. The pertinent personal circumstances at intake precipitated the long, arduous, and traumatic experience encountered by our family member. The initial procedure of admission began a twelve hour ordeal that resulted in medical clearance, and then discharge. Again, after a rough night the admission process started over again resulting in a ten hour ordeal, and then final admission. After all of this, our family member was now a patient in observation, in the psychiatric unit. This does not necessarily mean an individual is suffering some incurable disease or malady. But, it does mean that an individual with a former history will be attended to until a level of stability is attained that is acceptable, by the attendant physicians managing the specific case. From there, an individual enters the next phase of consultation, referral, and evaluation, to learn if a transitional stage for returning home can be recommended. Generally, it is a process that must involve the entire family; a comprehensive cumulative plan is developed, implemented, and followed. Each component of that plan is extremely important, or indispensable. This time around the primary events did not coincide

with our anticipated expectations. Already, in just a few days, we were feeling great apprehension for our family member. Of a sudden, our right to know what was happening on the patient’s end was abruptly cut off! This was quite unnerving to us, and produced a far reaching impact. It was not like the previous years where we were completely included in the (step-by-step) process of health treatment, repercussions, and final resolution. Now, it was not going very well! *As a side note, it is extremely important to establish legal rights that will protect a patient. Consent is the legal term that is used in order to obtain access to information, and data related to a patient’s treatment and progress, which will be considered private. In this case, a family should act to establish power of attorney so they become legally responsible, and can access vital information if necessary. That can be done with the prior knowledge and agreement of an individual that is under treatment, or for other related reasons. A Rising Tide Turns Into A Tsunami...! In a matter of hours, we discovered that our family member was confronting a traumatic experience that seemed rather extra-punitive, as opposed to remedial. During the initial intake process she was given a psychotropic drug, to calm her down; this was rather unsettling since there was disorientation, but no particular aggressive or violent behavior. There was a period of unclear thinking. In the following days we discovered that our family member was assessed as aggressive, uncooperative, refractory, impulsive, perceived as personally threatening by some of the staff, and then summarily sedated, and then for a number of hours locked in a socalled therapeutic [dark] “quiet room”. There was improper clothing, no undergarments beneath the hospital gown, no access to bathroom facilities, and no creature comforts other than an uncovered thin plastic mat, on a bare cold concrete floor, with a drain in its center. They were left alone, confused, frightened, cold, shivering, isolated, barefooted, feeling ashamed, wet from be-

She was forcefully dosed again and again with neural-inhibitors, used to control certain types of anxiety, and other reactions. The repercussions were averse. We were told by hospital authorities over the phone, that they observed our relative “crawling” around on the floor while in confinement. When we heard directly from our relative, it was explained that the perceived “crawling” was an effort to find a clean place on the dark floor that wasn’t wet, and since they were in an impure state they could only implore Allah’s Help by staying on their knees, and repeating dua’a over and over! thing of fear and hunger, some loss in goods, lives, and the fruits of your toil. But give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere. Those who say, when afflicted with calamity, 'To Allah we belong, and to Him is our return.' They are those on whom descend blessings from their Lord, and mercy. They are the ones who receive guidance." (2:155-157) It was necessary to be vigilant, and focused while on this emotional, hypertensive roller coaster. As Muslims we have an obligation to the Believers while making strong efforts to safeguard our well-being at every level. Sad to say, when we arrived at the facility to check on the situation, we witnessed other Muslim patients that were also present. We did not know their disposition, but we made dua’a for them, and this reflected Muslims that were making dua’a for our family. We confronted the care providers, in a formal meeting. We required them to give a play-by-play explanation of the

former day’s events. To our dismay, there was but little acceptable explanation for their behavior toward our family member. In a short time after this, a former patient was discharged and on our way home with us! For all intents and purposes, procedural care was not administered properly, in our estimation or to our satisfaction. What is more, while the tears flowed from their grateful eyes, our family member gradually recounted to us the horrific ordeal that was encountered. Not every moment in the experience was negative, and some individuals along the way were supportive, empathetic, and sincerely helpful. Yet, from the outset we perceived developing difficulties; this was our visceral intuition. Resolution And Encouragement Upon discharge from the facility, the slow clarity of mind started to come to light, Qur’an was constantly recited and remembered, while adkhar continued intermittently. Questions began to

flow like water in a stream; we all spoke in a calm manner. The response was positive, and the lapse of time, events, and places started to make sense again. Things started to align in the mind of our relative. We felt relieved, after experiencing periods of depression, yet entertaining hope in Allah that things would change, for the better. This was a test, and we comprehended that it was a way for Allah to draw all of us close to Him. In any event, we recognize it as a continued strengthening of iman (faith) in Allah, and in our ability to be patient, persevering, and composed. We are empathetic toward other families that encounter and will encounter such tests; we must ever turn toward Allah for His Guidance, inspiration, and compassion. No soul knows what is kept hid for them of joy, as a reward for what they used to do.”[Qur’an, 32.16-17] And, “Or he who pays adoration in the watches of the night, prostrate and standing, bewaring of the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord? Say: Are those who know equal with those who know not? But only those of understanding will pay heed.” [Qur’an, 39.9] And He said to His Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace), “And some part of the night awake for it, as voluntary worship for you. It may be that thy Lord will raise thee to a praised estate.” [Qur’an, 17.79] It has been said that those who worship at night will enter Paradise without reckoning, and that standing in night prayer shortens the length of one’s Standing on the Day of Judgment. This is why the Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace) said, “Stick to night prayer, for it was the way of the righteous before you. Night prayer is a means of closeness to Allah Most High, of expiating for bad deeds, avoiding sins, and keeping away illness from one’s body.” [Tirmidhi (3543], Bayhaqi, and others; it is a sound (hasan) hadith] Similarly, it has been related that fasting is a means for good health. shall have good health.” [Ahmad, from Abu Hurayra] Lovers have no time more joyous than when they are alone in entreating their Beloved. This is the healing for their hearts, and the great thing that they could long for. This is why Abu Sulayman al-Darani would say, “The people of the night find more joy than the people of distraction (lahw) in their distractions. Were it not for the night, I would not like to remain living.” The Day of Àshura’: The Tenth of Muharram It is mentioned in Bukhari and Muslim from Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him and his father) that he was asked about fasting the Day of Àshura’ [10th of Muharram]. He said, “I did not see the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) fast a day while more avid to seek its virtue than this day,” meaning the Day of Àshura’.” [Bukhari (2006), and Muslim (1132)]. The Day of Àshura’ has great virtue, and tremendous sanctity (hurma). The virtue of fasting it was known among the Prophets (peace be upon them all). Both Prophet Nuh and Prophet Musa (peace be upon them both) fasted it. The Prophet (Allah bless him & give him peace) used to fast this day even in Mecca, though he had not yet ordered others to do so, as mentioned in both Bukhari and Muslim. [Bukhari (2002), Muslim (1125)] When he migrated to Medina, and found the People of the Book fasting

this day and venerating it, he ordered the Muslims to fast it, and encouraged it so much that even the children would fast it. It has been reported in both Bukhari and Muslim from Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him), that, “When the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) reached Medina, he found the Jews fasting the Day of `Ashura’, so he asked them, ‘What is this day you are fasting?’ They said, ‘This is a tremendous day. Allah saved Musa and his people on this day and drowned Pharaoh and his people. Musa fasted it out of thanks, so we fast it too.’ The Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) said, ‘And we are more deserving of Musa than you are.’ So he fasted this day, and ordered that it be fasted.” [Bukhari (2004) and Muslim (1130)] At the end of his life, the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) made the determination not to fast this day alone, but with another day [f: either before or after it], in order to be different from the People of the Book. It has been reported in the Sahih of Imam Muslim (Allah have mercy on him), also from Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) that, “When the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) fasted the Day of `Ashura’ and ordered his companions to fast it, they said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! This is a day that the Jews and Christians venerate.’ So the Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace be upon him) said, ‘When next year comes – if Allah wills – we will fast the Ninth [of Muharram with it].’ But the next year did not come before the Messenger of Allah (bless-

Neither Allah Most High nor His Messenger (Allah bless him & give him peace) commanded us to mourn on the days of the tribulations of the Prophets, or their deaths, let alone anyone else. [The fuqaha have mentioned that it is an innovation to consider Muharram a month of mourning. It is not disliked to marry in this month.] Some of the Virtues of the Day of `Ashura’ It is a day in which Allah forgave an entire people. Tirmidhi relates that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said to a man, “If you want to fast a month after Ramadan, then fast Muharram, for it has a day in which Allah forgave an entire people, and He turns to others in repentance in.” [Tirmidhi (841)]

Sometimes it appears that the odds are overwhelming, but Allah says: Along with every difficulty comes ease and relief... In the days leading up to the City Council vote on the mosque, DeSteph and other City Council members received numerous emails from Virginia Beach residents. They ranged from complaints about traffic to claims that the mosque would be a training ground for terrorists who could threaten military installations. "Political correctness aside, it seems cities with mosques are the ones most likely to host hotbeds of terrorist cell groups," one resident wrote. "This is not the Virginia Beach we want our family to live in." Another wrote: "Why would you let our enemy build so close to our military bases? It's time to discourage Muslims from living here." ACT's local leader, Scott Saunders, wrote to the City Council to urge them to oppose the mosque. He suggested it would be tied to the Muslim Brotherhood, a group that seeks to spread Islamic law, sometimes violently,

The presentation, called "String Theory," is subtitled "You'll be amazed what you find when you start to pull the little strings." The presentation is a mix of public documents, Google maps and lists of Islamic groups, two of which Saunders claims are linked to the Muslim Brotherhood. It suggests two trustees of the Mosque and Islamic Center of Hampton Roads in Hampton have ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. Ahmed Noor, the third trustee of the mosque, has denied those claims and said the mosque has tried to keep itself far from any association with the Muslim Brotherhood.

One of the trustees named by Saunders, Jamal Badawi, is a Canadian college professor, author and speaker. He did not return repeated phone calls seeking comment. Delinda Hanley, news editor of the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, described Badawi as a "highly regarded religious scholar" who has worked to improve interfaith relations.

Saunders forwarded a portion of the presentation to City Council members after the vote.

Crescent Community Center, the local nonprofit group planning to build the mosque, rejected the allegations in a written statement. The center's directors said they have no direct or indirect connection to the Muslim Brotherhood

On Sept. 16, Saunders sent DeSteph an email he'd drafted encouraging ACT members to join DeSteph going doorto-door one weekend. Saunders told the members that DeSteph had lost the support of some volunteers because of his stance on the mosque. "Councilman DeSteph is a true ally in our cause and we need to support him," Saunders wrote. "Indeed, if he wins election to the state legislature we will have an ally in Richmond that we can count on to champion legislation that we need to see passed in our great state..." In an interview, DeSteph said he wouldn't push ACT's agenda if elected delegate. "I'm not sure what their agenda is for Richmond," he said. Saunders said he is pleased DeSteph voted against the mosque. "He did the right thing as far as I'm concerned," he said. "He made the right call for America."

Howard County Teens Rank Top Score in Race2College Second Year Race Parker of River Hill High School, and Halawa of Clarksville Middle School top 2013 Race2College event held in Baltimore City on Sunday, Nov 3rd, 2013. (Nov. 3, 2013 - BALTIMORE) -- Race2College held its second annual running and walking race at the nation's third oldest park, Druid Hill Park, in Baltimore City on Sunday Nov. 3rd, 2013. Runners took advantage of an extra hour of sleep and trickled into the park around 8:00 am to embark on a 5K race motivated by securing a brighter future for college students, strengthening family ties and empowering youth. The 5K race was a little over two laps around the beautiful lake on the southern side of Druid Hill Park. This year the race organizers made sure that all ages could have a say in the mission, and five brackets for participants as young as 5 were setup. The brackets were 7 years of age and below, 8 through 11, teens from 12 to 17, college adults 18 to 22, and adults above 22.

In his bracket Bashir was followed by Muhammad Ishaq and Wail Hijazi of Prince George's and Montgomery Counties respectively. The race brought a diverse group of participants from several localities in the Central Maryland region. The 2013 Race2College has received a Congressional Achievement Award from Congressman Elijah Cummings, Certificate of Recognition by Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Mayor of Baltimore City, and Congratulatory Resolution by Baltimore City Council, Office of the President Bernard Jack Young. The 2012 Race2College event was held in Howard County and received a proclamation by Howard County Executive Ken Ulman. The race occured after a short welcome statement by Grand Marshall David Berdan, Garrison Forestâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Middle School science teacher and Cross Country coach, who won the 13th annual Baltimore Running Festival on October 12, 2013. Berdan discussed the significance of college education and the role it played in his life as an educator.

The top two positions in the race were secured by Jake Parker of Howard County, who attends River Hill High School at 19 minutes and 30 seconds; and Mostafa Halawa from Clarksville Middle School at 21:30.

Race2College applications for the 2014 fall semester scholarships will be available on Nov 30, 2013. High school juniors and seniors as well as college students are encouraged to apply. For details about Race2College please visit http://www.race2college.org

Third place teens came Nada Ibrahim of Towson High School. First place pre-teens was secured by Jadyn Peterson of Bryant Woods Elementary, followed by Maryam Hijazi of Brooke Grove Elementary, third place was a tie between Maryum Nassar and Jannah Nassar of Clarksville Middle and Elementary Schools.

Schools, businesses and youth centers are invited to sponsor Race2College by making a contribution by check to Race2College, PO Box 726, Clarksville, MD 21029. All contributions are tax deductible and will allow Race2College to fund scholarships for the upcoming academic year.

Ali Yusuf of University of Maryland Baltimore County topped the college adult bracket followed by Moustafa Nassar of Towson High School and Ahmed Ibrahim of University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The adult bracket top score was achieved by Hassan Bashir, a student at University of Maryland, Baltimore County who came in also as third place overall at 21:51.
