THE MUTT

Motorcycling and street customs have seen a huge resurgence in recent years, making for lots of unique machines out there on the road showcasing a rider’s (and of course, a bike builder’s) creative streak as the lines between vintage and modern get ever closer. Customs can be a difficult and particular ‘in-the-know’ niche, with bikes often expensive and difficult to own and use. Our mission is to make this world, and bikes with true custom character, easy to access - bringing our craft to a larger and increasingly diverse audience.

CHOOSE LIFE. CHOOSE THE MUTT WAY OF LIFE.

ISSUE 001. SPRING 2020

Right, let’s tell you more about how we got here...

As a brand and a manufacturer, we have always prided ourselves on originality, and being ‘different’ in the best possible ways. Making bikes increasingly accessible to riders who don’t have big budgets helps us get those beautiful machines out on the road. By applying that same quality, finish and our signature style from our high-end builds to small cc bikes that suit everything from bustling city streets to wide-open spaces, a hand-finished Mutt is able to tick boxes for style, substance and affordability before it’s even tasted the world outside our HQ.

It’s not every day a brand creates a magazine. So why now? Why this?

So this magazine is the start of our mission to share more about the Mutt way of life! We love music (only the good stuff) and we are all about meeting people, exploring with creatives, collaborating and getting closer to the trailblazers which we are humbled to call Mutt owners. We hope you dig Issue One of MMM (it’s Mutt Motorcycles Magazine, of course) as much as we did making it and remember to whack our Spotify playlist on and turn it up to 11 while diving in.

7 | MUT T MOTORCYCLES FANZINE

Well, as you can probably tell - we’re not like other brands. From day 1 we’ve been disturbing the industry, and we’re dragging those disturbed along with us on the back of the baddest small cc two-wheelers on the market. Times are moving quicker than anyone could have anticipated in the world of motorcycling. Cultures among riders, while steeped in rich traditions, are constantly changing and we are here to embrace that in our own modern way.

Bikes at Mutt are created in a way not too far detached from how bikes were built in Birmingham in the heydays of BSA, Triumph, Enfield and the rest. There’s a genuine obsession with attention to detail as every last inch of a Mutt needs to be perfect before it gets sent out onto the showroom floor. With bespoke bikes being where Mutt came from, getting to know customers and what suits their needs best is an essential part of the creation process to make sure all Mutt owners are riding away on something that fits them to a tee. It’ll come as no surprise that there’s a great deal of pride in the work that takes place at Mutt HQ, with no corners cut when it comes to quality and style. It’s definitely not just the look of the bike that’s important to get right, but how it feels to ride and what kind of experience it offers the rider. With over 20 years of getting down and dirty building hundreds of custom bikes, our technical team - headed up by our co-founder (and custom legend) Benny Thomas - are able to look at small cc motorcycles in a way that truly nobody else can.

BORN IN DIGBETH With each build created from the ground up, there’s always the aim of delivering true custom classic style packed with modern convenience on a considerably leaner machine than might be expected. This makes for bikes that are easy to handle, quick to respond and adaptable to almost any riding condition - making them the ideal machine for a variety of situations. Birmingham, in the heart of the UK, is our home and bikes like the Fat Sabbath - steeped in utter darkness and local music references - help represent the birthplace of all things Mutt. Our HQ itself is tucked away in Digbeth, the once industrial heart of British motorcycle manufacturing. There’s more than a workshop here, we’ve got our own in-house coffee shop to quench your thirst, an events space and of course a showroom packed with Mutts - plus our own store stocked with exclusive lines of our own merch as well as a selection of other brands

THere’s a genuine obsession with attention to detail as every last inch of a Mutt needs to be perfect before it gets sent out onto the showroom floor

that really back the Mutt ethos. Basically, it’s the ultimate hang out space where customers can spend their time talking to like-minded motorcycle enthusiasts about the finer details of a Mutt. It’s not only the UK that’s getting a taste for our bikes; Australia, France, Spain, Portugal, Korea, Italy (the list goes on) have gone Mutt mad. Perhaps most notably in Japan, where shortly after expanding into the Japanese market our 2019 range sold out completely thanks to overwhelming demand (read more about that in our ‘Mutt Takes Japan’ feature further into the mag). This is just the start of a considerably larger Mutt international network on the way, we plan to get our bikes covering every stretch of road we can. From humble beginnings, we have developed into a global brand with customers across the world from all kinds of backgrounds getting a taste for life in the saddle. When it comes to famous Mutt owners, there’s no shortage of familiar names who’ve found their love for life on two wheels when sat atop a Mutt.

Times are changing fast and your best bet to keep up is on the back of a Mutt

Times are changing fast and your best bet to keep up is on the back of a Mutt, racing through the 21st century atop a powerful sounding engine without breaking the bank. There’s absolutely no excuse for settling for a run-of-themill bike when it’s easier than ever to create something that’s uniquely yours and ready to tackle whatever roads may lie ahead.

11 | MUT T MOTORCYCLES FANZINE

So what does the future look like for Mutt? As well as the potential for a global domination plan (we acknowledge this may be an overstatement) conceived in Birmingham, there are always legions of new creations rolling out of Mutt HQ. 2020 sees the new Razorback model roll-off the forecourt with a brand new monoshock frame, as well as new twin-shock models on the way this Summer.

The Akita is here, and it looks like it could have been carved out of a solid block of hardest granite. Beautifully brutalist with a custom-built feel you will only get with a Mutt Motorcycle.

ISSUE ISSUE001. 01. SPRING 2020

ROCK SOLID The first thing that hits you firmly on the schnozz is that tank - and what a tank! That’s 17 litres of rectangular goodness right there, and it gives the Akita a full-on super-pumped stance. Just like Big John ‘broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip, and everyone knows you didn’t give him no lip’.

ISSUE 001. SPRING 2020

COOKING UP A STORM

We chatted through all things motorcycling and life with Ed to get an insight into his life of riding and being out on the open road.

Being a creative and riding a Mutt go hand in hand, the freedom of being out on the open road and exploring new locations and spots. This is key for Ed: “I started a new project called ‘At Arms Reach’ which is mostly images of locations that I find via my motorbike. My life is different after getting on a bike, I am seeing more, therefore creating more.” As we well know, there’s always new journeys of discovery to be had on a Mutt.

CREATIVE PIONEER, ED COOKE, GIVES US THE LOW-DOWN ON HIS PHOTOGRAPHY AND LIFE ON THE OPEN ROAD

“Seeing more of the city is key. I’ve lived in London for about 6 years and always ended up on the tube, so being out and about in the open is a refreshing way to travel. The best ride I’ve been on is probably one time in my home town. I was cruising through the countryside without any means of direction or destination and stumbled across this real nice car in the middle of a field. I had my camera on me and set up shot, it hangs on my wall now and was also the trigger for an ongoing project.”

Boundary-pushing photographer Edward Cooke has years of experience in and around the film industry, from fashion campaigns to commercial brands, world-renowned musicians and some of the world’s top tier publications.

The hustle and bustle of city life can be a pressure cooker sometimes. Moving from place to place is easy by means of public transport, but being out on the roads is a different kettle of fish. The neighbourhoods you find and hold in memory are found through cruising, not tubing!

The likes of Rita Ora, Jessie J, Tinie Tempah, Example, Wretch 32, Robin Thicke, Cheryl, Dave Stewart and Pixie Lott have all worked with Ed and he has shot promo campaigns for J.Crew, Carhartt and Capital One to name but a few.

Ed holds country riding close to his heart, however, linking back to his hometown: “I’d say riding in the country over the capital, but getting anywhere in the city on a bike is without a doubt the quickest way.”

15 | MUT T MOTORCYCLES FANZINE

Ed makes the most of this as he explains: “I wanted to have a different experience from getting A to B, I’ve always enjoyed driving, but riding has a different quality, you feel much more connected to your surroundings, be it smells, weather and the road.” Nothing is quite the same once you’ve got two wheels under you, as any rider can vouch.

WOLF AND BADGER’S, TIMOTHY TURNER-SUTTON TALKS FILM, PHOTOS, BIKES AND MUCH MORE Not many who complete the Malle Mile have over 13 years’ experience producing and directing fashion photography and film. Tim holds key values to heart when riding: “I ride for efficiency, fun, the camaraderie and in equal parts, the solitude, but most of all, for freedom. Core beliefs that maketh the rider out on the open road. Riding enables you to get away from it all on your own or ride with your pals sharing the love, confirmation that there’s plenty of variation to be had from owning a Mutt. Something that comes up often in our chats with friends of Mutt is the way that riding has changed their outlook on cities. Seeing more of the place you live in from ground

out of town together this year to The Malle Mile.” Getting pals together for a ride runs deep, especially when your mates are flying in from around the globe to get out on their bikes. Being a London-based creative, using a Mutt to get around town is the quickest and best form of transport for sure. “Running fashion labels, photography and film studios, I am often at meetings and shoots all over London. There’s just no other way I’d get around.”

He talks about the best ride he’s ever been on with fond memories. “It was a very short ride that meant a lot, with a bunch of dudes I love, that I hadn’t seen in a long time. All my boys flew in from all over the world and we punched it

Summing up our chat with Tim he looked back on his greatest achievement this year with a laugh and a smile; “Not breaking any bones at the Malle Mile this year which was in-fact also my bucks weekend. Made it to the wedding in Ibiza in one piece after a very messy, high-speed weekend.” Good job for making it out of that one, Tim.

level, rather than taking subways and trains. It’s exactly the same for Tim. “Riding has changed London travel from a chore to a good time”, we love to see Mutts buzzing from place to place around town. Tim summed up the balance between the two scenarios; “City ride to beat the traffic. Country ride for the love of it.” Good shout.

The sense of freedom on a bike is unreal, although Tim talks of his creative life throwing epic goals in addition. “Successfully pulling off a serious achievement that you’ve worked really hard on. Once your pieces are walking a runway or you wrap a massive campaign shoot, those few moments when the weight falls away are reminiscent of the freedom you feel on an open road. It’s a moment you have to yourself that brings a smile to your face and it’s just for you.”

MUTT X BARBOUR It’s not often you see a Mutt Mastiff in the window of a radio station in Soho, but never say never. We planted the powerful machine in Soho Radio’s front room for a week-long residency that saw heads turn in Soho for a whole new reason. Packing in a party fuelled by resident Mutt DJ Jim ‘Le Grin’ O’Reilly behind the decks and Jägermeister Mules at the bar, Mutt maniacs and passers-by could drop in to buy some of our latest lifestyle collaboration with Barbour or some of our classic merch. Riders and pedestrians alike couldn’t avoid the sight of a healthysized Mutt logo in the window, even the bartenders were unable to resist a quick snap of them sat on the Mutt Mastiff. Never miss the chance to get up close and personal with this brute of a bike.

MADDI’S MUTT

ANTHONY PARTRIDGE X D*FACE

Ant’s love affair with two-wheeled machines started at age 11 when he got his first bike, however, the journey to become one of the best-known custom bike designers wasn’t as straightforward as you might think. We sat down with Ant who let us in on how it all started for him. “I built my first bike back in 2004 in my living room in Spain, it was an old bike, ‘92 softail Harley. That turned out to be shit, so I had to rebuild the whole thing. I was gonna just do the motor, then it snowballed into a full strip-down frame mod and HP upgrade and full-on rebuild. I rode it to local shows and my friend who was a professional builder back then told me to always enter your bike in the bike show if you are staying for the weekend to party. You know it’s guarded by security 24/7 and that frees you up from worrying about it getting stolen by another drunk dude.

“So I did that and kept winning or placing at those shows with the bike in Spain, very unintentionally. Building that bike was inspiring and a heap of fun, it really made me want to do more. I worked as an interior designer, yacht engineer, Aston Martin/Bentley mechanic, commercial shipbuilder/designer, then slowly did odd jobs for friends on bikes and also worked at another bike shop with friends. Then, finally, in 2012 I opened my own shop in Marbella, Spain. Over four years we built so many high-performance custom bikes for some great clients and built a brilliant brand. We then started working with brands like Yamaha and Harley on bigger projects until 2016 when I decided to leave my own company as my business partner at the time and I had different visions of what way the business should go. We shook hands and I decided to leave and go it alone...” With such a diverse amount of experience, it’s clear that Ant’s unique outlook shines when designing his bikes. It didn’t stop there though, with a big step coming three years ago. “In 2017 the Discovery Channel offered me a TV series and the rest I suppose is history. I’m looking forward to the

With a trailblazer like Ant Partridge behind a project, you know the outcome is sure to make you take a second look. That’s why, when his daughter wanted to take her first steps on a bike, you know he wasn’t going to let it be on just any bike.

ISSUE ISSUE001. 01. SPRING 2020

With more than a decade of experience designing and building custom bikes under his belt, Anthony Partridge has cemented his name in the custom bike world. From building his first bike in his living room to setting up one of Spain’s largest custom motorcycle shops and of course his work on the Goblin Works Garage TV show, his reputation spans continents and he’s always looking for an opportunity to create the next best bike for his latest customer.

next chapter in life, whatever happens the plans are always bigger and badder than before with lots of love and tonnes of good times.”

To kick off the top-secret project he “asked [his] daughter Maddi what colours she liked and then I asked “D” (D*Face) to make it rad and left him to it. The guy is uber-talented, and I just wanted the artwork to be a “proper D*face design”. It’s safe to say he bloody smashed it, huge thanks to D as his artwork really made the bike a real stunner!”

AHAAA! WE SAT DOWN WITH ANT PARTRIDGE TO GET THE LOWDOWN ON HIS D*FACE MUTT CUSTOM AS SHOWN ON THE TELLY.

Of course, when you get down and dirty with the bike it screams personality with no stone left unturned. “The pipe is 100% handmade by another friend of mine, Olly from Olluminium Auto Fab. I sent him a design and he smashed it out in a day while I was filming. As the bike was done on TV, I had very little time to do anything. We’re going from start to finish with 12-18 hour filming days 6-7 days a week and TV needs everything NOW! So I did actually make an exact pipe on TV but we had already made one fully finished earlier and cut all the bits to make another on TV. Olly did one I did the other. But without Olly I’d have struggled.” The next area to get stuck into was the seat which kept a true Mutt form. “So the seat is actually your Mutt seat base and foam. I just reshaped it and then had it upholstered by a guy named Gerry at Inflex Interiors in Oxford. Gerry is a very eccentric dude and always has some mad skins around the shop. I went in looking for a soft, light brown leather that looked old and worn. He went on a mad hunt and found a unique piece of gazelle hide that was perfect, it still had the rust marks on it from where it had been hung on a barbed wire fence in Africa in the sun to dry. It looked perfect and as you can see it’s super-soft, strong and looks vintage.” When you’re confronted with someone full to the brim of experience like Ant, it’s not often they work with a smaller cc bike these days as the scene is full of such big boys. But he told us he “loved working with the Mutt. The bike was already super cool and the budget was very small, so it was the perfect

platform to do some subtle mods and was super simple to tear down and rebuild. Also, as it’s such a simple and light bike it’s perfect for Maddi who is just starting out her riding career.” The smaller cc ‘Custom Scene’ is very much alive and we wanted to get Ant’s take on it. “I love it, I think it is a great place for many to get into bikes that aren’t too scary and dangerous and also fun for folks like me who can make something really cool without the huge budgets. A lot of big folks ride them too as daily riders for ripping around the cities when they don’t want to ride a big bike, they are perfect for us all really. The motorcycle industry is suffering and we have a massive lack of new riders, young riders and female riders and we need as many as we can get and I think smaller cc bikes are an awesome way into the scene for these people.” Maddi’s jump into riding has had Ant thinking about his first forays on a bike. “I had a little pull-start thing but it was too slow and I couldn’t jump it, so I when I was 13 I got a job washing dishes in a bar in the evenings and weekends to save up to buy a KDX80 and it was like crack I was hooked!” Ant not only featured his Mutt custom on the Goblin Works Garage TV show on Quest, but he also left us with some parting advice that money can’t buy. “I’d say if you want to get started, do it. Get stuck in. Don’t be scared, it’s not rocket science, and if you fuck it up you can always call one of us for help! The Mutts are super simple and very easy to tear down and rebuild. They are a great platform to cut your teeth on a custom-build.” A legend in his own right and it’s fair to say Maddi’s bike is one hell of a custom.

When a Mutt aficionado who happens to have had a brush with fame rolls into town, it would be rude not to let them borrow the new GT-SS while on tour over here. Frank Iero, frontman of Frank Iero and the Future Violents and guitarist of newlyreformed My Chemical Romance, has a taste for the open road and got a taste of the baddest British 125 when he stopped by our brand new East London hub on Cambridge Heath Road.

From his MCR days, Frank knows the power of being dressed in black and looks at home sat atop this rulebook re-writing behemoth. The bike nods to classic British machines of days gone by and is prepped for big journeys with an increased fuel tank, perfect for touring perhaps. Keep an eye out - and an ear out for a humming Mutt engine - for Frank motoring past you on the open road sometime soon.

The Mastiff is brutal yet refined, and oh boy have we stepped up the game with this little tarmac pounder. OUR CAPITA

WE HAD A NATTER WITH OUR LOYAL OWNERS IN THE NATION’S CAPITAL

Having or being part of an Owners Club is a feeling like no other. Like-minded individuals with a united passion for their bikes, creating memories together out on the open road week in week out. We caught up with two members of our very own London Mutt Owners Club, whose passion runs deep throughout their lives and who are constantly looking to create and personalise. Introducing, Kevo Thunder & Rob Hurley.

ISSUE ISSUE001. 01. SPRING 2020 31 | MUT T MOTORCYCLES FANZINE

TAL’S FAITHFUL

Kevo has been a Mutt rider since back in the early days of our brand and his current machine is something he holds close to his heart. “I have a custom desert racer specced by me and built by Benny back in 2014, it has custom paint which matches my dad’s Triumph he had back in the ‘60s, with Lucas lights, Triumph shocks, Bates headlight... Dunlop D803 knobblies front and back,” he tells us. A truly one-off machine that sets Kevo apart from the rest, with a nod to his dad’s classic from back in the day. Rob is very much from the same school of thinking and prides himself on subtle customisation and personalisation to create a one-off machine. “I currently own a ‘17 Mongrel 125. The bike has been modified over the years, and is now a machine which is unique to me. I love it because it was the first motorbike I bought, and opened up a completely new lifestyle to me,” Rob explains. The experience of first being in front of a Mutt bike is one to truly remember, Rob sealed the deal on his first Mutt and the rumbling exhaust note captured his imagination. “While browsing the market for 125cc motorbikes, a friend of

mine told me about the Mutt brand and after seeing one of the Mongrels, I had to see one in person. A trip to TTT Motorcycles in Bethnal Green just to view one was worth it. Hearing the bike for the first time sealed the deal for me!” Kevo recalls seeing our chief designer Benny back in 2014. “I saw Benny at the NEC, early 2014, with the Mutt collection, I already knew of boneshaker choppers through the shows like ‘The Trip Out’, and knew I had to have one!” And he went on to do just that with his tricked out desert racer.

It didn’t take long before we were onto the Owners Club and the founders and rides that our dedicated fans go out on each week. Kevo explains: “Andy James is the founder of the London Mutt Owners, he too has a custom 125 in orange and a 250 as well! All our rides are learner friendly, so we stick to A and B roads and the speed of the slowest rider. Generally meeting at the bike shed in Shoreditch, Epping Forest Tea Hut or the Tea Hut on Blackheath.” It’s excellent that so many new riders can join the experienced group and head out round epic London rides or more scenic ventures around Epping or Blackheath. Rob recalled the first ever ride out that sealed the deal for the club and had riders coming back for more. “Each of us owned a different model 125 and every one of them was unique in their own way. We met at Bolt London on a cold April morning, just to go for a ride as a group around London. The rest is history!”

Mutt is a bike you want to work on to make it yours. You have to be as committed to learning as you are to riding.

Kevo’s most memorable ride out is a truly mega-adventure. “Myself and Andy along with two other friends from Brad’s Cancer Foundation, rode from the bike shed in Shoreditch to Santander in northern Spain via St Malo and the west coast of France in 7 days on 125 Mutts!” What an incredible trip and an amazing achievement. We love seeing Mutts further afield and tackling new places and rides. Rob has also shown that 125 machines aren’t confined to short journeys around town with his most memorable ride out. “In September, four of us (Kevo, Andrew James, Simon Pittman, and myself) embarked on riding from London to Paris for the 2019 Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride. This was a four-day trip filled with eventful riding experiences; and proof that our 125cc machines were more than capable of the journey and able to give us an unforgettable riding experience through the French countryside.” With our new showroom just opened in Bethnal Green in the first quarter of 2020, the London Mutt Owners Club is definitely going to make strides in the city. Kevo buzzes: “The club is constantly expanding and with the opening of the new Mutt showroom in Bethnal Green, I can see us getting

bigger very quickly!” It’s worth bearing in mind his top tip for riding in London: “Just remember everyone else on the road wants to be in the same space you are in...” Very true and it’s imperative to take care when blasting the city streets. Rob is also double keen for the club to expand and continue to grow in 2020. “We’re always welcoming of new members in our riding group. Learner riders are more than welcome too. This is a riding club and we encourage all members to ride with us. We like to plan a variety of longer and short rides so that everyone can join a ride they feel comfortable with. Not everyone wants to spend the entire day riding to the other side of the country in the pouring rain... and there are some that do. We like to give everyone a choice.” You’ve got to take care out on the busy roads of our capital city and Rob had some wise words for riders looking to nip round the city streets in the near future. “Stay safe. Don’t do anything you don’t feel comfortable doing just because you see other riders doing it. If you’re not comfortable with filtering through traffic yet, it doesn’t make you any less of a rider. Just because you have never had an accident, it doesn’t mean one

ISSUE ISSUE001. 01. SPRING 2020

Starting your own club is definitely possible and it’s a ‘more the merrier’ situation when new clubs join the scene and get involved. Kevo’s advice for new club founders? “Just do it. Find a base, plan a couple of rides people will join in… The internet is your friend. We are a bit lucky to have the Bike Shed as our ‘base’. It’s quite nice!” It certainly is, Kevo, and it’s superb to

see the Mutt community embracing London. Rob’s on much of the same wavelength as Kevo, adding; “Find people who want to go riding. It’s that simple. Those who want to get to know their bike more. A similarity we see with our members is that we all want to get our hands dirty. A Mutt is a bike you want to work on to make it yours. You have to be as committed to learning as you are to riding.” 2020 is set to be a landmark year for the club, with new adventures in the diary and new friends to be made. Kevo gave us the low-down on the events that are on the map already. “Our lad PK is arranging a Mutt NC500 which is 500 miles around the north coast of Scotland. Of course we will do Tobacco Dock, meeting at the Ace Cafe. Summer rides include Burnham-On-Crouch, Bexhill, Rykas Cafe!” There’s certainly some on the horizon so keep ‘em peeled for details. Those great biker-friendly locations are key for Rob as he threw some events into the mix for riders to get involved with during 2020. “We have a full calendar planned for the year ahead, with some big events. We hope to get more riders together for some fantastic events such as The Malle Mile, The Bike Shed Festival, The North Coast 500 and many more smaller events too.”

JORDAN MURRAY LETS US INTO HIS MUTT HERITAGE AND THE FREEDOM OF RIDING

With era-defining hardcore punk performances at the likes of Reading and Leeds Festival, Download Festival and more, the Welsh outfit are frontrunners in a scene that moves fast and makes a hell of a lot of noise. Sounds familiar... Delving deeper into Jordan’s Mutt heritage, we spoke with him about his Fat Sabbath 125, how riding plays a big part in his life and his bucket list Mutt ride out. As soon as Mutt was on the radar, that was it for Jordan! As he describes: “I can honestly say at 32 I haven’t thought about riding until this year until I saw the Mutt range - I think it was the Mongrel first and I was fascinated from then on - within weeks I booked the CBT and snagged myself a Fat Sabby!” Being a 125, our Fat Sabbath is primed and ready for a host of new riders to get their CBT locked in and get out on the open road. Jordan now looks for any opportunity to roll out on his street cruiser. “Now I just look for any opportunity to get the Mutt out - I’m constantly checking the weather apps and planning trips out - I even ask the other half if she needs me to go get anything for her, purely as an excuse to hop on the bike” Sounds like someone is hooked on his Fat Sabbath, who can blame him? Retro looks and everyday rideability are absolutely

key and Jordan’s 125 does just the job on short runs to the shops and going further afield on ride outs.

“Where I live in South Wales I’m spoilt for countryside - when me and my mate go out we go right through the Brecon Beacons and down empty roads - we cruise past castles, reservoirs and waterfalls - doing the route in a car wouldn’t be half as exciting.” It’s no wonder that Jordan has chosen a country ride over being in the city. “As much as I love nipping past all the traffic jams on the way to work, it’s gotta be a country ride every time.” That image of cruising down narrow country lanes, buzzing from picturesque village to village sounds spot on. Even when out on tour, getting Mutt time is key for Jordan as he described his thinking behind possibly taking his Sabbath out on the road with Brutality Will Prevail. “Now when I get tour dates - in my head I’m instantly thinking maybe I could follow behind the others on the Mutt. But logistically it doesn’t make sense - any one-off shows though I will be riding to.

“I’ve managed to tour a decent percentage of the world and visit places with my friends that you wouldn’t necessarily holiday with my band. Managed to experience different cultures and see things that wouldn’t have been possible without being in a band” Nothing matches the freedom of riding for Jordan and it would be mega to see his Fat Sabbath on stage with Brutality Will Prevail sometime soon!

Hardcore Punk royalty is the order of the day from our next Q&A. With six studio albums to date including 2019’s ‘Misery Sequence’, Brutality Will Prevail guitarist Jordan Murray has plenty of pedigree.

KEEP IT ON THE DOWN-LOW

We wanted to create a Mutt with a sporty vibe. OK, so our version of sporty might be a little different to most peoples, and the FSR sure as hell ain’t no Isle of Man contender, but do we care - we sure don’t. This is a Mutt - a low-down gritty motorcycle with an outlaw custom-racer vibe. What this bike will do is get you hacking round the city super-fast looking cool as f**k doing it.

PRESENTING, DJING, JOURNALIST GEORGIE ROGERS GIVES US THE INSIDE SCOOP From the iconic BBC 6Music platform through to TV presenting, journalism and DJing, Georgie Rogers is the epitome of new music cool. A huge champion of alternative, independent and electronic music, Georgie has been bringing us the cream of the crop from artists on a host of A-list stations for the last few years. She is also flying the flag for female motorcyclists across the country - with epic road trips and foreign rides under her belt. Georgie called by our brand new Bethnal Green showroom for a coffee, a natter and a ride on our Mastiff 250cc street cruiser.

41 | MUT T MOTORCYCLES FANZINE

We kicked things off where it all started and Georgie’s first steps out on 2 wheels: “When I was 16 I had a go on a 50cc dirt bike in Italy out the back of a family friend’s house and I remember never wanting it to end. Then in my mid-20s I rented a motorbike in one of my favourite places on earth, Hampi in India. Exploring such magical scenery on two wheels got me hooked, but it wasn’t until after another few trips using mopeds to get around that I decided to make it my primary mode of transport.

“In 2015 I had a pretty savage knee accident and the rehabilitation was so limiting that the minute it was healed I definitely threw myself into everything and that meant getting back on a surfboard, snowboard and finally getting a bike. The week I passed my CBT a friend texted me a picture of a customised 125, and that was it..” London has an excellent base of female motorcyclists and Georgie has been an active part of the scene since passing her test. “There’s a great scene for female riders in London and I’ve made some pals for life through it, in particular the talented photographer, rider and racer Caylee Hankins who shot these pictures,” she tells us. “We went on a trip in Germany together last year the week after I’d got my full license and that’s what you want really - someone on your wavelength who has your back when hitting the Autobahn for the first time!

“Leah Tokelove is changing things for the Flat Track scene and Spanish Enduro rider Laia Sanz is killing it. She kicked off 2020 riding in the Dakar Rally after getting 9th place overall in 2015. There’ are bikers who are using their skills to cater for female riders’ needs making awesome hardwearing and environmentally conscious apparel for on or off the bike like Black Arrow and Ame Pearce’s brand Fast Women. We also have the ultimate flag-waver in Elspeth Beard, who was the first British woman to ride solo around the world and released her book Lone Rider in 2017. I had the pleasure of interviewing Elspeth for a short film we made about her story, which launched the Super Women series I’ve made with filmmaker Alice Smith. Watch it because she’s so badass.” Out on the open city streets, zipping around town or commuting on a Mutt is a breeze. Our latest 250cc machine was the choice for Georgie as she headed out to shoot locations around the capital. “That 250cc was more than enough power to make a great run around in the city and I’m a sucker for that scrambler/café racer style so I really enjoyed taking it for a spin. It was great.

“When the weather is good I commute a lot. It’s such a good way to get around and far preferable to the Central Line underground, especially in the summer when it’s hotter than the sun down there. As soon as you are cruising into work with the breeze on you it’s instantly a better start to the day.” 2019 was absolutely mammoth for Georgie - playing host to a plethora of DJ sets, festival appearances and radio shows on several networks. “DJing at Glastonbury Festival had always been on the bucket list and I did that

for the first time. There were magical sets up a mountain in Bulgaria at Meadows In The Mountains festival and the disco ship at End of the Road. BBC News had me on a few times to talk about music stories which was pretty wild being live on telly in the main news studio. I voiced some commercials and interviewed some more heroes like Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, Chic’s Nile Rodgers and Lizzo for BBC 6Music, while building on my broadcasting through Music Discovery on Soho Radio and Foundation FM. The biggest highlight was launching our series of short docu-films and podcasts about trailblazers across various fields, Super Women, a platform dedicated to mentoring female filmmakers. Looking back, I guess it was a pretty good year!” Life on two wheels is an excellent opportunity to pack your schedule full of great biking events, ride-outs and get-togethers. Whether that be with pals or like-minded enthusiasts, you’re never too far from a well-organised and fun city event. Georgie gave us the low-down on her next riding movements: “Getting out on my new bike as much as possible and planning lots of trips. I did Amsterdam and Germany last year visiting bike festivals Pure and Crafted and Petrolettes so this year I’ll go to the Malle Mile locally and hope to do more weekend rides to the UK coast, into France and beyond. The dream would be getting out to the US or Central America for some road trips in 2020.” Georgie works with such a range of personalities and crews and we were keen to get the detail on who would up sticks, pack their bags and jump in a sidecar or on the back of a Mutt for an epic road trip! There’s quite the broadcasting bike crew forming: “I reckon I could persuade quite a few of them to hop on the back with me or jump in a sidecar! The rockstars would be game. Of the BBC radio

presenters that are into bikes there’s Mary Anne Hobbs and Reggie Yates [Another Mutt owner, naturally]. That’s the start of a broadcasting biker gang right there...The BBG! We could go full Sons of Anarchy with jacket patches, a TV series and everything.” Following on from an epic 2019, Georgie is set to smash 2020. It looks like a packed diary of events, DJ sets, shows and more for the rest of this year. “Lots of exciting things to keep me busy. We have five more episodes of Super Women to get out there including films with Amali De Alwis MBE FRSA who spearheaded Code First Girls and one of my favourite jewellery designers Tessa Metcalfe. The BBC 6Music Festival is coming up in Camden, London so I’ll be involved with that and back on with Shaun Keaveny, covering the music awards season into summer festivals. I have a bunch of upcoming DJ gigs and I’m hoping to launch some podcasts, programmes and docs that have been in development over the past year too.” We couldn’t leave it there without getting some inside 6Music gossip from Georgie! We wanted to dish the dirt on Shaun Keaveny and Matt Everitt and we got back exactly what we thought...They’re absolutely top blokes! “Shaun is the most generous broadcaster and has a true gift of taking your remarks and working it into radio gold. Sharing airtime with him over the years on such a well-loved station like 6Music has been one of the greatest joys of my career. There’ve been so many times in the studio where we almost couldn’t breathe for laughing so hard. That sense of inclusion comes across and is infectious, which is why so many people love him. Matt’s been a trusty guide since my first job in radio at XFM in 2007. I followed him to 6Music shortly after so he’s been a huge part of my story there, taught me so much and is one of the best interviewers in the game. They are legends!” Georgie is set to pop back to our Bethnal Green store soon, so keep an eye out for more features with this broadcasting trailblazer! Nice one Georgie, have a top 2020.

We’ve delivered another thump on the nose to bland motorcycling by releasing our snarling Razorback onto the city streets. A brand new, ground-up development housed in a new monoshock frame, the bike has been totally designed and developed in-house at Mutt HQ, Birmingham. The Razorback casts a different shadow to our selfproclaimed previous ‘fat’ bikes and, as with all Mutt motorcycles, this new machine has true custom and classic roots. Naturally. Look directly underneath that rear loop and you will see a whole lot of...nothing. Benny Thomas, our co-founder and creator of the bike, explains why: “By locating all the electrics and battery in a neat little package underneath the seat and a narrow aluminium swing arm which leaves that beautiful wide-open space above the back wheel. Oh, and the wheels are of course aluminium rims with stainless spokes, another nod to our custom bike building history.”

47 | MUT T MOTORCYCLES FANZINE

AND ITS A VICIOUS LITTLE BUGGER.

Benny adds: “As with all Mutt 125s, the Razorback is powered by our super solid four-stroke little black number and fed by a Delphi fuel injection system which, in turn, is fed by that narrow little tank. Oh, the tank! That’s another new item developed specifically for the Razorback. Have you ever tried mounting an old ‘70s tank to your one-off custom build? You have? Then you’ll be familiar with welding on new tabs, removing dents, blowing holes through the tank with your trusty TIG welder and all the other aggro that comes with fitting vintage parts to bikes. With that in mind for a production bike, we designed our own tank taking influences from the many vintage tanks we have fitted to over the last 20 years.” The Razorback is a tall bike. With a seat height of 88cm, it gives the rider a great upright riding position and the ability to have a clear view above traffic. Chucking this fella into corners will induce a bug-faced grin to any fizzog and those new shocks are tried and tested on off-road machines, so this really is a go-anywhere bike with a smooth ride that’s also perfect for urban cruising. Moving up front on the bike, there are low-rise Mutt Handlebars ahead of a black contoured slimline seat. Inverted forks held by wide yokes help soak up the bumps both on the pot-holed city streets and country tracks. Another 18” aluminium rim with stainless spokes sits up front shod with fat rubber, which of course is the Mutt way. The Razorback is finished off with a full stainless steel exhaust system with a fat stubby silencer and an aluminium Bash plate. Everything else is what you would expect on any of our Mutts: A smooth 5-speed transmission, rider-friendly controls, mini custom speedometer, stainless steel fasteners throughout, combined braking with braided hoses and bags of attitude. The Razorback is a simple yet enthralling bike to ride. AVAILABLE IN HIGH GLOSS RED AND SILVER OR BLACK AND FROM £3,495 + OTR. ISSUE 001. SPRING 2020

“ “The whole winter, the temperature was in the low teens. Utterly freezing,” says Every Time I Die’s frontman Keith Buckley regarding the months that yielded their eighth full-length album, prior to stepping out on stage at this year’s 2000 Trees Festival in the UK. Such is the price you pay for living in Buffalo, NY. Granted, the weather seems like a rather mundane topic for the normally acerbic and irreverent vocalist, but even the most acid-tongued hardcore band must have their weather chat on point when playing a British festival, right? But Buckley and his cohorts Jordan Buckley (guitar), Andy Williams (guitar), Daniel Davison (drums), and Steve Micciche (bass) aren’t so hard up for pathos at this point that they’re grumbling about the temperature outside. If anything, Low Teens (released some three years ago now) remains their most poignant and impassioned album in a career full of sardonic illuminations and pit-inciting fervour.

The icy backdrop of Buffalo underscores a winter of dramatic change. Most notably, the band were on tour in Toronto when Keith received a phone call that his wife was in the hospital with a life-threatening pregnancy complication. It was a harrowing night as the frontman left the tour and raced home to overwhelming uncertainty. “I was facing death, not in a symbolic sort of ‘cyclical change’ metaphor but literally,” says Buckley with his token literary-minded self-awareness. “If I lost my wife, I would have to raise my daughter for her. If I lost my daughter, my wife and I would be forced to try and cope. But if I lost them both my life would end and I would see to it. Once I knew that in my heart it became the only certainty I had, and that was a relief.” Both wife and daughter survived the ordeal, but the moment of crisis had a lasting impact on Buckley and an inevitable role in shaping the lyrical scope of Low Teens. “It was abject helplessness, and that entirely new feeling opened up a lot of questions about place and purpose. I honestly don’t think that’s too far off from the lyrical content of our other songs but anyone that saw the news knows the

source this time. They know that this is a response to a very specific event and not just a dude shoehorning an existential crisis into his routine for some interesting imagery.” When Buckley yells “untimely ripped into this world, I was born again as a girl” in the searing ring-the-alarm track “Petal”, there is no metaphor, no thinly veiled allegory. The birth of his daughter literally saved his life. Lyrical motifs aside, other big changes were afoot during that Buffalo winter. From a sonic standpoint, the most crucial development was writing with new drummer Daniel Davison. Fans of Every Time I Die’s caustic combination of savage metallic hardcore and pentatonic riff-laden classic rock were

Low Teens’ razor-sharp sound and auditory barbarism was also abetted by engineer and producer Will Putney (Acacia Strain, Body Count, Exhumed). Every Time I Die have always opted to avoid complacency and mix things up with the recording process, but Putney proved to be an even more valuable component to the album than expected. “We just like change,” says Buckley. “Will had a hunger we found exciting. He was willing to do whatever it took to make this record which included coming to Buffalo and working in a strange studio. If he was willing to step out of his comfort zone, so were we. And I definitely don’t mean to disparage any other producer we’ve had but I have never in my life heard so many incredible ideas for an Every Time I Die record come from one man.” And indeed, Putney adeptly captured the band’s dichotomic ability to juggle melody and malice. Change may be a welcome element to Every Time I Die’s creative process when it comes to studio personnel, but family crises and rotating band members can be debilitating developments. Every Time I Die weathered the winter that sparked Low Teens and the British summer that delivered their incredible performance at 2000 Trees Festival. We wave goodbye to the band as Buckley rides into the Festival sunset on his Mutt... but of course.

not be disappointed by thrash attacks and Southern-boogie breakdowns at 2000 Trees Festival. But Davison’s heft, dexterity, and creativity pushed the band forward. “Daniel joined and not only further unlocked Andy and Jordan and Steve’s potential but put such a unique force behind the band’s dynamic,” Buckley says of his new bandmate. “I know that everything that has happened is necessary for what is presently happening but, man, to think about what the band might have been like if we had him sooner—private jets, shows on the damn moon.” You can hear this new energy on “Glitches”, which blazes with the kind of raw basement hardcore that originally catalyzed the group, but rages with a pinpoint accuracy beyond any meagre hardcore band’s reach. “C++” marries desert rock croons, Unbroken’s metallic riffage, and a pile-driving chorus into a relentless hook-laden anthem. “The Coin Has A Say” operates as an extremity test, with every gear-shift somehow pushing the band into inexplicably heavier territories. Yes, Every Time I Die has always juggled hardcore urgency, metal brutalism, and rock melodies, but never has it felt this instinctive or this vicious.

RAW CUSTOM APPEAL Moving back past that big Bluto tank you will find some more new design detail. Black lightweight anodised aluminium parts in the form of super-neat new indicator brackets; a set of short rider and pillion pegs; and a drilled aluminium gear lever and shift peg. Step back, and you will notice brand new additions in the freshly styled side panels and exhaust heat shield. These add to the raw custom appeal of the Akita. Even with its big-bike feel, oozing with custom bike touches, as with all our Mutts it’s a lightweight tarmac thumper with plenty of chuck-ability. At home in the city or out in the sticks the Akita is a blast

TWO JOHNS ARE BETTER THAN ONE

We caught up with you at 2000 Trees festival earlier this year, how did the ‘heavy’ faithful receive your set?

It was fantastic to be a part of such a well-respected festival and the crowd seemed really receptive. I grew up pretty close to the festival and went to a couple of the early years, so, on a personal note, it was particularly special to perform on the other side of the barriers. ‘Out Here On The Fringes’ sounds mega (congrats lads) and vinyl copies sold out online prior to release! What’s the tour schedule like for the album?

Thank you, we’re really pleased with the response so far, making a dent in the UK Vinyl Chart Top 40 was way beyond our expectations. We’ve just completed a mainland UK tour but will be taking the songs to Ireland and Scotland at the back end of the year. We’ve also got a full UK tour scheduled for early 2020, so we anticipate it being a pleasantly busy one for JOHN. Favourite UK or European venue?

We were really lucky to visit some of the very best venues throughout Europe on 2018’s tour with IDLES. Places like VERA (Groningen, The Netherlands) are like visiting museums - treasure troves of musical history, and we feel very privileged to have played a small part in these histories. Must have been epic getting album of the day status on BBC Radio 6Music and being asked to record a live session. What is the famous Maida Vale studios like?

It was another real privilege, a lot of the equipment was purpose built for the studios so it’s just got such a unique character. The people working at the studios are usually holed up in control rooms and offices, so it’s actually eerily quiet in the rabbit warren of corridors connecting all the studios, the silence only occasionally interrupted by muffled music from behind closed doors.

Having moved out to the edges of London, I was interested to capture some of the experiences of these ‘fringe’ locations through the songs. There’s a lot of mentions of discarded objects in the lyrics which nod towards the often futile production of contemporary life. I’ve always believed that we can take greater messages from more grounded personal perspectives, so I hope the album encourages people to look closer at the routines of their everyday.

ISSUE ISSUE001. 01. SPRING 2020

What was your inspiration behind the album?

Hailing from Crystal Palace, which boozer do you recommend we visit when we are next in the area?

We both enjoy a visit to a local pub called The Conquering Hero when we’re back home. They also happen to have a pet pig that lives in the beer garden - affectionately named Francis Bacon. What’s the current music scene like south of the river in London?

There’s always been a rich and active music scene in the south of London, especially circling around supportive venues like The Windmill in Brixton. We’ve recently met plenty more creative people in our local Crystal Palace area too, so it’s nice to feel part of that community. Thoughts on getting into the world of two wheels?

I’m stuck to two legs at the moment and Johnny already has a van for the practicality of running his business restoring furniture. Our producer Wayne Adams (who produced both albums God Speed In The National Limit and Out Here On The Fringes) actually just bought a bike, so we had a fair few chats about his move onto two wheels in the studio. He’s got the punk rock credentials to pull it off. Pick a famous John to join you on an epic road trip across Europe?

We already did our pretty epic twenty seven show trip with Jon from IDLES. That’ll cover it. Finally, if we were to name a motorcycle after you what would it be called and why?

It seems wrong not to stick with the manifesto… JOHN?

BETHNAL GREEN GIVES A BIG WELCOME TO THE NEW MUTT LDN STORE

When looking for a place to cement roots, it’s safe to say the streets of London can be a little less forgiving than those of their northern brothers. In a city where boundaries are constantly being pushed and everyone wants to stand out from the pack, taking things to the next level in the big smoke is no mean feat. Safe to say, here at Mutt Motorcycles we like to think we crossed the T’s and dotted the I’s with our epic East London store opening.

TO THE BIG SMOKE

We might have humble beginnings but this little shed-built brand now has a home in the capital city, as beautiful Bethnal Green welcomed a slice of Brum with open arms. With our new London home comes the opportunity to experience the full Mutt story without going outside the M25. From a slick (yet still characteristically a little rough around the edges) showroom packed full of bikes, through to expert servicing and repairs, our new location is on hand to cater for your every Mutt need down south. We’ll get you suited and booted in our latest threads, sort you out with one of our iconic machines and get you on the road before you can say ‘Ozzy Osbourne’. With a typically Mutt, slightly left-field but in the thick of it, location as our LDN base we had to throw one of our infamous get-togethers at the new store. With Jägermeister, Dalston’s and London Fields Brewery supplying the drinks and Hoxton Radio behind the decks, we had one hell of an evening. Press, media, influencers and a few famous faces all attended - along with plenty of dedicated Mutt lovers - making this the perfect opportunity for friends, customers and like-minded folk to get up close and personal with our bikes and merch. The new London store feels like a home from home already, drop in for a browse of our bikes, a ride, or just a chat whenever you’re in town.

EXTREME SPORTS ARE NO MATCH FOR STEPH BOLAM

When it comes to a true extreme sports lover, you’ll be hard-pushed to find someone stronger than this. From Arctic expeditions to rock climbing and dirt biking, Steph Bolam takes the game up a few notches and we had to get ourselves in the know on her latest projects and what’s on the horizon for her.

I just love getting out with my friends, being outside and learning new skills often in beautiful places.

71 | MUT T MOTORCYCLES FANZINE

Steph is lucky enough to own a relatively early Mutt and using it to the max would be an understatement! She pushes limits in life and that continues over to her Motorcycling: “She’s a 2014 and was my first ever road bike. Perfect for riding around London.” Mutt lovers using their bikes for beating city traffic and going point to point above ground is pretty popular - avoiding those Tube rushes and nipping around the city streets just makes sense.

She’s a member of the VC Collective - a group of like-minded motorcycle enthusiasts who show their love for life on two wheels. “VC is a great group of girls who just want to get out and ride bikes. They are super encouraging to anyone who wants to ride a bike, male and female. Obviously, the bike world is very male-dominated so they created a very welcoming and chilled space in the industry for women. But when we go out at the weekends, riding, it’s for both men and women. They host a great weekend for women every year in Wales, where you can learn to ride enduro, trials and even a bike for the first time. And party in the evening.” Steph has also founded her own clothing brand Filthy Cute LDN, with a group of core values that all add up to a brilliant brand ethos. “I just wanted to create something that I really wanted to wear, Something fun with awesome artwork that was bloody comfy and a bit naughty. It was very important that the brand be sustainable because surely there is no point in this day and age with it not being.” She’s certainly not focused on only one area, with a desire to push boundaries across the creative field. With a Sideburn Magazine cover earlier in the year as a personal highlight, Steph is constantly moving and creating in the motorcycling world. “Yeah, Sideburn is an awesome magazine. I subscribed to it long before I even tried flat tracking just because it was full of such cool bikes. I was super happy with the shoot, the photographer and art direction was really cool. And the bike is a mega babe!” With dirt biking held close to her heart, Steph always jumps at the chance to get out on the trails and tracks with her friends.

“I don’t compete, I just love getting out with my friends, being outside and learning new skills often in beautiful places. I would like to do the Welsh 2 Day this year with my buddy Gemma and our fellas. I only hope to finish it and have a laugh.” A newspaper summed up Steph as the ‘UK’s Most Extreme Mum’, with all her adventures and achievements. Going from extreme sport to sport, ice marathons, rock climbing and more certainly gets you noticed! “Good old Daily Mail headlines... Honestly, once you have experience and if you have good guides then mountaineering and ultra marathons are not so extreme. It’s just about the right training. I believe most people with a decent fitness level could do these things. Endurance sport is mostly in the mind. I started doing these things to give myself a purpose in my fitness and I love being outdoors.” Steph’s daughter is also keen to get in on the extreme sports action: “She loves motocross, skiing, and sailing. Climbing sometimes, but sometimes she can have a moment halfway up. I want her to find her own way with sport. I just do my thing and if she wants to get involved she is always welcome and encouraged, but I don’t push her. I love sharing these things with her, she is a perfect little partner in crime. I don’t know how long it will last though!” There’s always a new project on the horizon with Steph and this year she’s looking at a host of different projects and goals. “I want to do another ultra marathon and I want to start to race Flat track with the DTRA next season.” Steph will definitely be dropping by our HQ in 2020, so keep a lookout for her and her trusty Mutt on the city streets!

Our creative mastermind Benny sat down with Reggie to talk all things bike design and together they pulled in all the essential components. Once they had the essentials, anything that wasn’t a necessity was tweaked or discarded because Reggie wanted a fierce little hellcat (which is exactly what he got). His bespoke 250cc Mutt is dripping in black stealthiness with heaps of individual touches: A tail light concealed in the rear frame, a seat hand-fashioned in Bugatti suede and Reggie’s own graphic applied to the side panel. It’s the attention to detail and ability to deliver a truly custom-finished product that worked so well for Reggie. He’s since suitably dubbed his bike ‘The Mutt Wiler’ and it joins his collection of other bikes and cars back home. While this little demon is ideal as his street bike, Reggie has also delivered one of his bigger machines up to HQ ready for some Mutt-ification. His pack of Mutts looks set to grow…

AN INSIDER’S LOOK AT REGGIE’S CUSTOM MUTT

Reggie’s plethora of accomplishments are wider than you might have realised - with everything from presenting music awards to writing his own film under his belt, he’s becoming an unstoppable force in the industry. Between shooting his next big documentary and writing his next film, he visited Mutt HQ to further finesse his Mutt. Being located in Central London, the ability to stay nimble in traffic without being cumbersome and awkward to handle was a top priority for Reggie, so we instantly knew the custom 250cc Mutt we built for him would be the answer to his commuting prayers.

77 | MUT T MOTORCYCLES FANZINE

With every custom bike comes a unique story as we add a thread to the Mutt tapestry, creating a rich and diverse collective we’re pretty proud of. From actors, creatives and musicians to the multi-award-winning presenter and documentary maker; Reggie Yates.

WEST COAST IN THE WEST MIDLANDS.

Flying in from Seattle to MUTT HQ in the heart of Digbeth, singer-songwriter Noah Gundersen has crossed the Atlantic to tour the UK and get plenty of miles under his belt. From trailing the wide open roads of America on his Harley to the streets of Birmingham on our very own Sabbath 250, Seattle’s finest electro-folk rock songwriting sensation has been on our hitlist to sit down with and chat about riding, music and all the fun stuff in life! It’s a family affair for Noah when it comes to motorcycling as he shares riding with his nearest and dearest. “My brother-in-law got me into riding,” Noah explains. “I always said I was gonna do it, then one year he was sending me Craigslist posts of used bikes that were affordable and I was like ‘yeah fuck it’ and did it. So I did the course, that was a few years ago.”

“I just fell in love with it, I think because with music it was my hobby and then it became my job and it’s nice to have a hobby now that’s not my job that I can like turn my brain off. For me I think it’s about being present constantly. It’s really, really good

With 2020 set to be an epic year for Noah, complete with tour dates off the back of the release of his latest album ‘Lover’, his schedule is rocking through the months and the album gives us a sneak peek into his life. “It’s got a lot of snapshots of my life kind of transitioning out of my 20s into my 30s and the things I have learned about myself and relationships that have failed. It’s come from a place where I’m more comfortable in my creative skin and I think it maybe had something to do with just being older and comfortable as a person having less to prove. For a long time I think I was kind of self-conscious of being a singer-songwriter - I just didn’t want to be seen as soft or something - so I’ve made a rock record and branched out into a lot of different things. With this record, it felt like sonically it was different but it didn’t feel it was trying to prove anything other than just making what was interesting to me.

ISSUE ISSUE001. 01. SPRING 2020

time in as you can. Then there are days when you get caught in the rain, it’s like 40 degrees [fahrenheit] and it’s miserable. There’s a thing called Backfire in Seattle that happens once a month and it’s a big bike meet-up.”

“It’s really just wanting to stay interested in what I’m making. I want to make it feel like it’s still fresh and interesting, being able to try more traditional singer-songwriter songs in a different vehicle, the importance of staying engaged as an artist in what you’re making. For me, that’s finding new sounds to keep it interesting.”

Noah has already racked up plenty of miles on his bike, really stretching himself as he gets into the saddle. “I did a ride from Seattle to Montana last summer and I did the whole ride back in one day. I was pretty wiped, but there’s that weird thing that happens when you’re at the end of a long ride like that, you’re in such a zen headspace it’s as if you’ve been meditating all day.” The Seattle motorcycle scene is bubbling away at the moment and there’s loads of exciting groups and projects going down in the city. Noah has his finger on the pulse and is looking to get into more events and rides this year. “There’s definitely the café racer scene, that seems to be pretty hip these days, and there’s a little shop in Seattle where they’ve got a coffee shop and a bar then they teach people to work on their bikes and they have lifts and things. But it’s so cold and wet most of the time so riding happens pretty seasonally. There’s always that end of the year point when you’re trying to squeeze as much

For me I think it’s about being present constantly. It’s really, really good For my mind.

Noah’s listening out on the road this year has been varied to say the least. From new music to podcasts, we were keen to get the low-down on what he’s digging out on tour. “There’s this group called Suicide Boys, they make a sound called trap music. I listen to them a lot. I’ve mostly been listening to podcasts and reading, trying to make more space for my own ideas. If I’m constantly listening to things, it’s hard to have my own ideas come through. I find the way I am most creative, there are two modes. One is being in the studio and writing and for me that’s just showing up at a creative hub with a partner that I work with. He’s really good with computers and I’m not.

79 | MUT T MOTORCYCLES FANZINE

for my mind and everything else that’s attached to it. You just can’t do anything else out on the bike. I listen to music, but you can’t be on your phone, you can’t do anything.”

“I found the most important thing is to not get hung up on anything and just have a flow. As soon as you start thinking about it too much, that’s when you freeze up.” If Noah’s out on his bike, he’ll sometimes plug into his own tunes while riding. What was his pick from his new album for city cruising though? “Of my own?! Well it is funny because I do definitely listen, like when we were working on the record we would definitely put stuff in my headphones while I was writing and make mental notes on them. I think the title track ‘Lover’ - there’s something kind of cinematic about it that I could ride along to.” With a packed schedule and dates around the country, Noah is hugely into the UK’s capital and has played a quality show at East London’s Union Chapel recently. “I really like playing in London. We played at Union Chapel on this trip. I don’t really have a lot of time to check out the cities, which is funny because people in the States ask me about touring over here like ‘it’s so great you get to travel’. It is really great but it’s different to just enjoying it - you’re working - but the show at Union Chapel was good.”

Out on the 250 Sabbath while visiting Mutt HQ, Noah rode the streets of Birmingham with pride. “It was super fun - taller than I expected, the suspension is kind of high up. It would be fun to get it up to more speed. It’s fun being on such a light bike. I have a Harley Fat Bob back home which is a 1700cc, pretty heavy. There’s not a lot of whipping it around but I do miss having a smaller bike in the city as you can get around cars quick. So this is fun, especially because I never get to ride when I’m on tour. So even just to be on a bike is a bit of a break. “And they’re beautiful, they look like how I would mod-out a café racer but they just come that way and that’s very cool. The side of the road was so weird - I didn’t ride for very long but I did find myself constantly second-guessing if I was on the right side!” Noah had a spot in mind for his ultimate ride with pals if he was ever given enough time in between tours. “It would be really cool to do Iceland in the summer, you could like do it in a couple of days. It’s such a small country. You could ride round it in a day. One of my best friends grew up in New Zealand and we’ve talked about how cool it would be to take bikes over there and just go and tour around.” This would link back to his love for involving his family into his riding as well. “Actually, I think what I would love is if my dad and brother learned to ride. If the two of them and I could all do a ride I think that’d be so fun because I ride with my brother-inlaw - we do like a bike trip with him and one of my best friends. We ride every summer and if I could get my bro on board it’d be super special!” Good luck for the rest of the year Noah! We look forward to getting out on the open road with you again soon.
