LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT October 30, 2013 Dear Members, It has been an encouraging year for many businesses in Mt. Washington Valley with many reporting growth throughout our fiscal year and a strong end to the summer. We have received many positive designations in the media too such as Snoweast Magazine readers voting North Conway the “#1 Destination Village for Skiers,” Trip Advisor naming North Conway the #1 most affordable ski town in the Northeast, and USA Today featuring Mt Washington Valley in a story about Top 10 Quintessential Fall Trips. Additional good news for our Chamber is that after many hours of work and input from our members, the Board completed our strategic planning process and adopted a plan (see Strategic Planning Committee Report in this publication). We have made much progress already on many of these initiatives: • Expanding our system for the collection of data so we can better measure the results of our marketing and programs; • Beginning a series of focus groups with members to identify emerging trends; • Writing and receiving additional grants from the State of NH’s Joint Promotional Program; • Developing the Mt Washington Valley Tourism Fund to expand financial resources; • Working with both the Mt Washington Economic Council and the Mt Washington Housing Coalition to become part of the Mt Washington Valley Regional Collaborative. I want to personally thank each of you, our members and supporters, for your ongoing membership, sponsorship and Tourism Fund support of the Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce. With your help, and the hard work of the Chamber Board, partners, Janice Crawford, staff and volunteers, Mt. Washington Valley is on target to becoming and remaining the number one choice for visitors looking for a New England destination; and for our Chamber being a first choice for the business community seeking innovative marketing solutions and leadership in the promotion of the Mt. ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES 2012 October 30, 2012 at Red Jacket Mountain View Resort Bob Carper, President of Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce, called to order at 4:30 p.m. and provided a message of welcome. He thanked our Presenting Sponsor Memorial Hospital; Supporting Sponsors Boston Globe Media, Settlers’ Crossing, TD Bank, and UBS; and White Mountains Treasure Sponsor Woodland’s Credit Union; and our In-Kind Sponsors Glass Graphics, Ruthie’s Flower Shop, Varsity Beverage, Outside Television-White Mountains TV 16. APPROVAL OF MINUTES – Dick Pollock motioned to accept Annual Meeting Minutes of 11/1/11; Ben Wilcox seconded. The motion carried. FINANCIAL REPORT – This report was presented by Kim Tibbetts, Treasurer. There was a 10K increase in operations expenses – some due to education and travel. We’re 30K up over all in membership at this time compared to last year, possibly due to putting our membership renewals in a windowed envelope so that it looks more like a bill – and commands more attention. Jack Dunbar motioned to accept the financial report. Gordon Cormack seconded and the motion carried. STRATEGIC PLAN COMMITTEE REPORT – Dr. Michelle Capozzoli presented a power point on the strategic planning process the board has been undergoing. Phase I included data collection which was facilitated by a consultant Joe Lathrop who reviewed documents, interviewed staff and 30 members and elected officials and stake holders. We learned that our Chamber is a hybrid of a Chamber of Commerce and a Destination Marketing Organization and a report was presented from the information gathered that is now being used in Phase II of the strategic planning process being led by the Strategic Planning Committee members including Jeff Smith, Gordon Cormack, Greg Frizzell, Michelle Capozzoli, Jack Dunbar, Dick Schwalbenberg and Janice Crawford. This committee is charged with collecting data, creating a mission and vision, a SWOT analysis, and strategic goals and initiatives that will be used to guide a 5 year plan. Their work will be ready to present to the full board for approval on Jan. 17, then stay tuned as there will be communication to the members through Chamber Connections, After Hours, Business Expo and more. If you have questions or wish to get involved with initiatives, you can contact one of the committee members. MARKETING REPORT – Marti Mayne presented a year-end PR wrap up, and Jason Robie discussed efforts in social media. Referenced pages 16, 18 & 19 of 2012 Annual Meeting program. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR REPORT –Janice Crawford encouraged members to become involved with the Chamber and to use their benefit. To learn more, members can call the Chamber to schedule an appointment or sign up for a member orientation. Also, members should keep us informed about what’s happening with their businesses so the Chamber can share with others. Janice also spoke about the efforts of the MWV Preservation Association and the Community Celebrations Committee. The group has gotten involved with helping the skating rink at Schouler Park stay open this year because it is considered a community tradition to have a skating rink in North Conway Village. There is a $2,000 shortfall for this project and community businesses are invited to get involve. Sponsors can have their business listed on the sign. Bob Carper introduced the incoming president, Greg Frizzell. Greg moved to adjourn the meeting and Jackie Goodhart seconded. The meeting was adjourned.

FROM THE STRATEGIC PLANNING COMMITTEE Chamber members, Early in 2012, after agreeing that the Chamber needed to gain more strategic focus and therefore required a long-term visionary plan in order to ensure its continued success, we embarked on a mission to create a strategic plan. Based on this directive, the Executive Committee created a Strategic Planning Committee. At our last Annual Meeting on October 30, 2012, Michelle Capozzoli presented the work of the Strategic Planning Committee and set forth an overview of the committee’s research and efforts to date. At that time we conveyed the current work underway as well as the continued planning required to identify the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats that we faced as an organization. We also discussed our thoughts on the mission and vision. The Strategic Planning Committee completed our work and presented a comprehensive 5-year plan to the Chamber Board of Directors in early 2013. The plan which includes a solid mission, compelling vision and aggressive yet achievable and focused objectives was approved by the board. The following is a summary of the PLAN’s mission, vision and 5 key strategic objectives: The Mt. Washington Valley Chamber and Visitors Bureau’s Mission: Strategically market the Mt. Washington Valley as the premier New England vacation destination by enticing tourists with our year round attractions and natural resources. This fosters a business climate that promotes growth and collaboration in member communities, while protecting the area’s natural beauty. The Mt. Washington Valley Chamber and Visitors Bureau’s Vision: The Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau will be the innovative leader in the New England tourism industry thus being the:

• FIRST CHOICE for the business community seeking innovative marketing and leadership in the promotion of the Mt. Washington Valley as a premier vacation destination.

• FIRST CHOICE for visitors looking for a destination for a vacation tradition.

Key Objectives:

o Research and Measures – We need to develop meaningful data to measure our success, tell our story to maintain and attract new funding.

o Resources – Obtain additional funding required to achieve our mission and vision.

o Marketing – We are a destination marketing organization and a key to our success as it has been for many years is to attract visitors to the Valley.

o Collaboration and Leveraging – We have many partners and need to define these relationships and better leverage their resources.

o Maintain Organizational Effectiveness – We need to ensure that our organization is engaged and sustainable. The Executive Committee assumed the role of providing the oversight and implementation of the PLAN during 2013. Through the work of the Chamber Staff, Board Members and several committees we have been diligently working toward achieving these objectives. Required action items, measurements and target dates have been established and are reviewed at the regular meetings of the Executive Committee. We are pleased to report at this annual meeting, that a significant amount of progress has been made to achieve the objectives of our PLAN. While that is the case, as many of you know who are involved in strategic planning, it is a journey and requires refinement and discussion along the way. We continue to work to achieve the mission, vision and strategic objectives of our PLAN and request your continued support as well as your feedback as we strive to be the First Choice.

YEAR IN REVIEW 2012-2013 Marti Mayne • Maynely Marketing Public Relations The chamber’s PR program celebrated another successful year with coast-to-coast coverage of consumer tourism stories. How do we measure success for PR? • More than 275 million impressions created via newspaper, TV, magazine, and online stories. That’s more than a quarter of a billion times that Mt Washington Valley appeared before sets of eyes in the past year. • The value? Close to 200 million dollars would have had to have been spent in advertising dollars to generate this kind of coverage. Stories ranged from national publications like National Geographic, USA Today, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, Yankee Magazine, NH Magazine, WBZ in Boston, WCSH in Portland, Outside Magazine, Travel & Leisure, Yahoo.com, Examiner.com, and AP stories syndicated to more than 10,000 news sources nationwide. • We focused on regional coverage throughout New Hampshire, Maine and Massachusetts to capture the interest of the majority of our travelers, along with and local stories too. What did these stories cover? You name it from scenic charm, outdoor adventure, waterfalls, mountain facts and weather to shopping, dining lodging, attractions, ski resorts and XC Centers, regions and areas, sports feats, Best of ’ s Top Ten lists and personalities - appeared before many millions of readers and viewers. None of this coverage could be achieved without active media outreach through the chamber’s PR Program. Highlights of the PR Program include: • For the second year in a row, TripAdvisor named North Conway the #1 most affordable ski town in the Northeast and the #5 most affordable ski town in the country – a kudo that really helped to encourage visitors in our present economy. • USA Today featured Mt Washington Valley in a story about Top 10 Quintessential Fall Trips • TripAdvisor also named North Conway among the top Northeast Leaf Peeping Destinations, and that story appeared in the Wall Street Journal and Boston Globe. • Yankee Magazine featured Mt Washington Valley in a spectacular ten-page feature story depicting the heart and soul of the Valley in emotional photos. This was only the second time Yankee had ever featured a region in such depth. • Boston Globe featured both Bartlett and Fryeburg in “One Tank Away” stories which reportedly made phones ring. • We’ve focused a special effort on Canadian PR which resulted in stories in the Ottawa Citizen, Montreal Gazette, Journal de Montreal, Journal de Quebec, Toronto Star and a number of popular websites in Quebec. Additionally, we hosted a number of Canadian journalists who are preparing stories in magazines for this winter. • Locally, a number of stories about Mt Washington Valley businesses, events or personalities appeared in the Union Leader, Yankee.com, Concord Monitor, About.com New England. NH Magazine, Seacoast Online, Foster’s Daily Democrat, Nashua Telegram and many more. • High profile websites including HuffingtonPost.com and AOL News, NPR.com, Examiner.com, Uptake. com. WickedLocal.com, Examiner.com, BucketTripper.com, BellaOnline, About.com and many other travel or general consumer sites resulted in millions of impressions about Mt Washington Valley from stories on the web. • Additionally, Mt Washington Valley hosted nearly 50 journalists and guests including both American, Canadian and European journalists. In November, 2013 we’re participating in a press mission with the Dept. of Travel and Tourism Development (DTTD) to Montreal for deskside meetings with key journalists from Quebec. We work closely with DTTD and Discover New England to host both European journalists and travel agents/tour operators in Mt Washington Valley.

YEAR IN REVIEW 2012-2013 We monitor online requests from journalists through a number of subscription sources. Not a week goes by where we don’t respond to at least three and sometimes ten different requests for information from media. We maintain an online press kit on the Mt Washington Valley Chamber’s website. Simply go to www.mtwashingtonvalley.org and click on the Media link at the bottom of the page to see hundreds of press releases covering every season and general topics too, plus an archive of older releases. Additionally, we send the monthly E-Traveler newsletter to a list of nearly 19,000 people interested in visiting Mt Washington Valley. This monthly newsletter is focused on insider tips about things to do for tourists and travelers to Mt Washington Valley. There is a loyal following of E-Traveler newsletter readers, and this marketing outreach tool has proved fruitful in keeping Mt Washington Valley top-of-mind for potential visitors. None of our active PR programs would be possible without the help of very generous Mt Washington Valley businesses. Thank you to all the lodging, dining, attractions, retail and service members in hosting media who in turn provide stories to increase awareness about the hosting business and the Mt Washington Valley destination. ABOUT THE SNOW- Winter Marketing We all know what happens when the meteorologists in Boston, Manchester, Providence and Portland say it’s going to rain on a January or February weekend. An audible groan can be heard among ski resorts, XC centers and lodging properties in the Valley as plans change and cancellations occur. Five years ago, the Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce launched a concerted campaign to address meteorologists in New England with efforts designed exclusively to provide information about winter ski and travel conditions in the Valley. The program was tremendously well accepted by New England meteorologists. The enthusiastic feedback from weather men and women was exceeded only by the great coverage for skiing in Mt Washington Valley over the past four years. Today, not only meteorologists but local and regional ski writers too have come to rely on the Mt Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce for up-to-date information about skiing and outdoor weather and conditions in the Valley. Meteorologists tell us that the MWVCC program has served as a regional and national example at meteorology conferences. Once again his winter, with the help of a JPP grant matched with funds from the ski resorts, the chamber and ski resorts will work with meteorologists and ski writers to provide up-to-date information, forecasts, photos and video footage and ongoing communication offering an upbeat and accurate view of the weather in Mt. Washington Valley on a consistent basis for the 2013-14 ski season. What was formerly dubbed “the meteorologists project” has been renamed to ABOUT THE SNOW, and for the second year in a row will expand to include a skier outreach, an expanded social media component and video newscasts. From the time the snow falls in early November to the last week in March, we’ll send the ABOUT THE SNOW newsletter to those who’ve signed up to receive information about skiing, winter events and snowmobiling in Mt Washington Valley. This newsletter will offer insight into snow conditions and forecasts, ski reports, include offers from ski resorts and winter-related business, and highlight one lodging package and a “tip of the week” each week. In addition, each newsletter profiles the opportunities for off-the-slopes fun offering information about snowmobiling, sleigh rides, skating, winter horseback riding, ice climbing, winter hiking and more. We’ll also include contests to drive respondents to the Facebook page to post answers. This newsletter will be loaded with recent photos of ski conditions; the same photos that were mailed to meteorologists for mentions on-air. We have nearly 4000 names of people who’ve indicated an interest in receiving ski and winter information. At the end of last ski season we surveyed ABOUT THE SNOW readers, and more than 95% of those readers reported the newsletter was helpful, and better yet, more than 60% of readers reported it prompted them to visit Mt Washington Valley after reading one or more issues.

YEAR IN REVIEW 2012-2013 The About the Snow Campaign will once again be accompanied by a focused Facebook and Twitter program this year, offering up-to-date information and photos about the snow to skiers throughout the country. Between twice daily (and sometimes more) provocative postings and an aggressive advertising campaign on Facebook to help build the chamber’s fan base and drive traffic to the chamber’s website and the AboutTheSnow.com webpage the chamber’s fan base grew last year by 60%. When we started the About the Snow Campaign on November 1, 2012 the MWVCC fanbase included 6092 fans. When we completed the campaign, the Fanbase was at 10,295 on April 1, 2013. Most significantly, the virality and reach of the chamber’s social media reach expanded nearly five times, giving the whole region a nice boost in branding. We featured 17 different Facebook ads over the course of the campaign, coupled with nearly 20 promoted posts. Throughout the campaign we posted daily messages and photos (most days two, three or four times) which featured news and photos from all of the ski resorts and XC Centers in the region. As often as possible, posts from the ski resorts and XC Centers were shared and tagged to increase the reach of each resort or center. This aggressive Facebook program will continue in the 2013-14 season. For the first time this year, the About the Snow program will work with Amy Mahoney to produce ten video newscasts focused on winter in the Mt Washington Valley. We’ll make these available via online sharing to all chamber members and hope that each member will also employ them to tell the story of skiing in Mt Washington Valley. Amy is also working with the networks to offer access to our footage for ski reports. Photography The Mt Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce has worked closely with a number of photographers in the Valley. This year, Dan Houde of Wiseguy Creative has been on retainer to capture the action and beauty of Mt Washington Valley. Throughout the About the Snow campaign of 2012 and again this year, Dan will be our “Man on the Snow” photographing skiing and winter adventure throughout the Valley. His photos are always uploaded to the Chamber’s Flickr account for usage by members too and will also be posted to the Chamber’s Pinterest Boards too. Since July, 2013 Dan has been retained to take photos of not only winter but spring, summer and fall attractions, scenics, shopping and more. Many of you have been kind enough to host Dan and his models. We ask that all businesses honor Dan’s request to take photos which will then become part of Mt Washington Valley’s photo library. We appreciate your offers for Dan’s complimentary admission and access to your business for photo taking. Please send your photos to me, at pr@mtwashingtonvalley.org or info@maynelymarketing.com and we will use them for social media campaigns, media outreach and newsletters. Our needs for photos are greater than ever, so please send photos – especially those that are about the snow – throughout the year. It can be a photo of the snow in your backyard or fun in the snow at your business. We will credit the photographer and/or the business too. Shopping Campaign For the first year, Mt Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce has obtained a JPP grant, matched by funds from Settlers’ Green Outlet Village and North Conway Village Association to promote holiday shopping in North Conway. Thus from October 15 – December 2, 2013, the shopping campaign will include: • 8 SHOP TALK newsletters covering all aspects of shopping in North Conway. • A dedicated shopping Facebook advertising and posting campaign • New Pinterest boards dedicated to sharing shopping shots • A photography campaign to build stock footage of shopping • PR outreach to US and Canada for shopping stories. • Shopping Contests

YEAR IN REVIEW 2012-2013 This campaign began in mid-October and will continue through early December. In less than ten days more nearly 160 new fans have been added and the total reach for our Facebook campaign is 12,035 impressions. We’re actively recruiting new newsletter readers which will add to our email database of shoppers for the future through this campaign too. SOCIAL MEDIA Facebook: MWVCC has created scheduled Facebook posts throughout the year for Facebook advertising. While posting takes place four times per day on the Chamber’s Facebook page, we accompany those photos with advertising and promotion. Each week we choose key messages for promoted posts, while maintaining ongoing ads within the timeline and on the right side. Facebook campaigns are supported with JPP grants and support of chamber membership sectors. The following campaigns are scheduled: Shopping Campaign: October 15-December 15, 2013 About the Snow Campaign: November 15, 2013 – April 15, 2014 General Advertising/Spring and Summer fun: May 1, 2014- September 15, 2014 Here’s an example of what happens when the chamber advertises on Facebook: • As of July 26, 2013: 10,274 likes. • As of August 12, 2013: 10,344 likes (when advertising began) • As of October 25, 2013: 11,655 likes Look what happens when we start the advertising campaigns: Due to the Facebook algorithm, it takes a paid advertising campaign to really grow the fan base and reach. The MWVCC advertising campaign combines promoted posts with both “timeline” and “right side” advertising. We employ a strategy that combines targeted ads with wider reach image ads to build the fan base, which in turn builds the reach for our message and branding for Mt Washington Valley. Other Social Media: Pinterest A Pinterest Campaign was launched in 2012. Today, the Chamber supports 12 boards with 215 pins. We’re seeing sharing of our pins increasing during fall foliage period. Pinterest boards include: Skiing and Spring Skiing boards, Outdoor recreation, Autumn, Weddings, Around Mt Washington Valley, Maple Sugaring, Road to the Links, Family Fun, Scenic Drives, Summer Recreation , Shopping Flickr Mt Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce has compiled photos in their Flickr account for a number of years. Today, the chamber supports 57 sets (or albums) of photos, including everything from golf tournaments, annual meeting and Business to Business Expo to every kind of recreation you can imagine. There are thousands of photos available to media and MWVCC members for use to promote Mt Washington Valley. As of the end of August there were nearly 80,000 overall views of photos on the Mt Washington Valley Flickr account. Instagram The Chamber launched an Instagram account in July, 2013. Today, there are more than 130 followers. Twitter The Chamber auto-feeds all Facebook comments to Twitter and additionally creates dedicated tweets for important announcements. As of the end of August, there were 2150 Tweets and 1958 followers on Twitter.

ELECTRONIC MARKETING AND SEO Jason Robie • Ridgeview Technology and Jaimie Crawford • MWVCC It has been a great year for the Mt. Washington Valley and here it’s not always about statistics, we are taking on even bigger issues. Through our electronic marketing, the Chamber is breaking down gender stereotypes. Through our Facebook efforts, compared to last year’s, we have seen our male audience increase to almost meet that of our female audience. This tells us many things. Much of our “tried and true” marketing campaigns are geared towards holiday shopping and dining, which is controlled mostly by our female audience. Perhaps we can now attribute our gender audience equality to our steadfast marketing efforts towards our ski industries through our About the Snow newsletter and targeted social media campaigns. As of right now we have 11,655 fans and 48% of those are men, which is a close second to the 49% holding women have. Our partnerships with the local ski areas and Southern New Hampshire and Metropolitan area meteorologists have allowed us to speak clearly and more effectively to outdoor enthusiasts throughout the New England area. This allows us to cultivate and reach a broader and more diverse following. These facts allow us to appreciate the natural resources of the White Mountains that much more because instead of having to create and market reasons for people to visit the Mt. Washington Valley, our standards are being set by our industry – outdoor recreation. Events such as the Mud Bowl, White Mountain Milers Half-Marathon, Mount Washington Observatory’s Seek the Peak and many more are outdoor driven events that the Chamber can market to put “heads in beds” and positively impact the valley’s economic structure! Our followers are also engaging with us on Facebook in a very real way. 24,000 people per week see our Facebook posts and 1,635 of them LIKE, SHARE or COMMENT on our posts every WEEK. But of course it doesn’t hurt to create reasons for people to visit us just the same! Through our Search Engine Optimization efforts, we have seen the search terms “North Conway NH”, “Mount Washington Valley”, “North Conway restaurants” and “North Conway events” come up time and time again as top search phrases. Thanks to the rich pool of active community participants and businesses in the valley, our web visitors are finding a gold mine when it comes to “North Conway events.” Events put on by committees such as Community Celebrations and non-profits allow the valley to become a one-stop shop for vacation destinations throughout each holiday season. Businesses who consistently post to the Chamber’s visitor calendar, submit press releases to be released on our blog and through our visitor email blasts and on Facebook help keep our SEO foundation strong by allowing us to release relevant and accurate information. Additionally because this foundation is so stable and dynamic due to the consistency of our dedicated members sharing their events and collaborating with the Chamber, businesses can market through these outlets and be guaranteed that the right eyes are reading them and figuring the essence of the message into their vacation. A huge aspect of marketing is visibility and repeated visibility at that. The more our Facebook, blog, Twitter, Flickr, Pinterest and Instagram friends and followers read about all of the wonderful vacation opportunities in the valley, the more likely they are to book a family holiday here and return year after year.

ELECTRONIC MARKETING AND SEO Similarly, “Jackson NH” and “Conway NH” both made significant improvements over last year as well. The Chamber’s efforts to include these relevant search terms in their advertising efforts ensure that visitors are being directed towards vacation destinations that span across the Mt. Washington Valley region. The Chamber’s blog is a key tool used in accompaniment of all our marketing efforts. We have 16,871 visitors reading our blog - that is almost 10,000 MORE than last year! - and 1,349 people reading our blog every MONTH – that is 108 readers every day! Again, we hope these numbers encourage businesses and community members to send press releases and photos to our PR department on a regular basis to be published on our blog. It’s nice to know that, while everyone in our community is working way more than forty hours per week to build and sustain business and keep the Mt. Washington Valley in the forefront of every vacationer’s mind, when we do find the few hours to get some rest at night, our search engines and website keep working for us! Bing referrals jumped up 2,100 over last year. We’ll continue to keep an eye on that search engine and ensure our SEO practices are catering that way as well as for Google (still our #1 referral source). Sometimes it’s good to downsize and allow more simplicity into our lives, but when it comes to our website, the word MORE is the only one to describe it! Our dynamic and visually stunning website over the last twelve months saw 730,000 visitors which is 82,000 MORE than last year! To keep the good news rolling, that translates into 5,025,246 page-views, which is 700,125 MORE than last year with 2,000 visitors per day, viewing 7 page-views per visit! Data like this helps us direct our efforts in Search Engine Optimization. The more narrow and personalized we can get with our electronic marketing efforts, the more we can accurately provide wanted information by our consumer looking to book a vacation or do business in the Mt. Washington Valley. The Chamber is here to promote YOU and we are happy to do everything in our power to make sure your messages are read and heard across all markets. The more information you have and share, the more we can do to strengthen our tourism based economy by providing incentive across multiple platforms to dedicated readers and followers looking for a well-rounded family holiday. TOURISM FUND Home to 40,000 community members and visited by 22 million year-round visitors, Mt. Washington Valley provides the backdrop for our thriving tourism industry. While our natural resources set the stage for this, it is essential that we continue to market Mt. Washington Valley as New England’s premier destination to encourage all potential visitors to choose to vacation in our Valley instead of a competitor’s destination. The Tourism Fund was established as a means of increasing our marketing budget and to help us meet the match required for increased revenues available to us through the State of NH’s Joint Promotional Program.

Please help us with a donation to our Tourism Fund! We’re raising $87,000 for additional Tourism Marketing. Funds raised this year will help pay for a winter Boston TV campaign, promotion of outdoor recreation, competitive events to build the Spring season and create a summer marketing campaign. 2013 White Mountains Treasure Award The Mt. Washington Valley Chamber of Commerce is very pleased to honor these individuals for the tremendous contributions they have made to the Mt. Washington Valley. These individuals have demonstrated outstanding and consistent caring for the improvement of the Valley and the quality of life for the residents of our many communities without the expectation of reward or commendation. Their bios in the program read like a national Who’s Who. Without them we would not have the very important social services, business support, and entrepreneurism that have gone into making our valley a quality place to live, raise a family and work. 2013 White Mountains Treasure Award Richard (Dick) Ficke Dick is a retired USAF Colonel with over 20 years of world-wide service and has been a part of the Mt Washington Valley since the1980’s. He is the past president of Kiwanis Club of Mount Washington Valley and currently the District Lt. Governor. Since 2005 Dick has been the Chair of Angels & Elves, a project of the Kiwanis Club of the Mount Washington Valley that provides gifts to more than 500 needy children in Carroll County who might not otherwise have received presents. Kiwanis members coordinate a valley-wide network of generous individuals, organizations and businesses who contribute their time, money and resources. Dick serves as SCORE counselor and chapter chair for Mt. Washington Valley SCORE, providing free and confidential business counseling to entrepreneurs and small business owners that will lead to goal achievement. Dick also serves on the Board of Directors for Arts in Motion Theater Company, a non-profit, theater education and production company which recently became the theater company in residence in the historic Eastern Slope Inn Playhouse. Dick is passionate about the plans to revitalize the Playhouse as a year round performing arts venue for the community.

2013 White Mountains Treasure Award Mountain Garden Club The White Mountains Treasure Award is given to the Mountain Garden Club (MGC) from a community that is grateful for the club’s dedication to promoting horticultural, education, civic beautification, and conservation through volunteerism and friendship in the Mt. Washington Valley. The Club’s Civic Improvement Projects in roadside beautification and conservation add pleasing environments that are highly valuable for daily commuters and well as visitors to the Mt. Washington Valley. For a motorist who may have had a stressful day at work or traveling, nature goes a long way towards easing tension. The MGC is now in its sixth year of assisting Mt. Washington Valley Habitat for Humanity homeowners in the planting of trees along Robert Morrill Drive. The Mountain Garden Club also sponsors events such as: Flower sales for Cancer awareness ( Jen’s Friends), Scholarship Funds (for an eligible Mt. Washington Valley resident), Boutique / Plant / Flower shows - at various times of the year (to support MGC community projects). The MGC works with local nursing homes in their Garden Therapy. Their current project involvement is with Merriman House at Memorial Hospital. The club is pleased to work with local schools on their horticulture programs. The club selects one school each year to plant a “Memory Tree” with the local students. The tree is dedicated to “all children for the perfect world.” In addition, the club holds a Smokey Bear & Woodsy Owl poster contest for elementary school children, with the goal of teaching them about conservation and preventing wildfires. The MGC’s Children Unlimited Rain Garden Project was a multi-year project which was started in September of 2009, designed in September of 2010, planted in June of 2011 and completed in August of 2012. It was designed to act as an infiltration device for dissipates [runoff ] materials that ordinarily flow into our lakes and streams and as an educational tool for children. The MGC was awarded the National Garden Club President’s Project Award in May 2013 for the Children Unlimited Rain Garden Project.

2013 White Mountains Treasure Award George Cleveland George Cleveland, the grandson of President Grover Cleveland, has been a valued and lively presence in the Mt Washington Valley for many years, and one of its most visible and influential leaders. Serving originally as Program Director at WMWV, Mt. Washington Radio and Gramophone, he quickly became known as “The Voice of the Valley” and in that capacity conducted more than 3,500 interviews with newsmakers from all parts of the world. In this capacity he was the recipient of three Golden Mike Awards from the NH Association of Broadcasters. He remains a popular voice actor, auctioneer, and speaker, who frequently dons the apparel of his grandfather to present an entertaining living history program. Currently, and for the last 12 years, as the executive director of The Gibson Center for Senior Services, he runs one of the most complex organizations in the Valley. The Gibson Senior Center is also one of its most successful and important institutions in the Valley, providing meals, transportation, and social and educational programs to seniors in the greater Mt. Washington Valley area. George is also a former board chair of the Evergreen Center for Wellness, VP for the NH Coalition of Aging Services, and a board member of the Tamworth Foundation, the Kekumano Foundation, and the Friends of Recovery. Formerly, the board chair of The Barnstormers Theatre in Tamworth, one of the longest running professional summer theaters in the country, he is often its community “face”, as well as a masterful fundraiser known for his creative and irresistible solicitations. One of his more unusual fundraising endeavors was posing wearing only a hat in the 2003 “Tamworth Men in Hats” calendar, which raised more than $75,000 for local charities. With a keen sense of history and place, he has also been guiding tours throughout the White Mountains for more than 20 years and currently is an interpreter with Raven Interpreter Programs. An avid collector of tales and legends and the self-appointed “Interpreter of the Bizarre in History and Local Surroundings,” he writes frequently for local publications on people and places of interest. Generous with his time, colorful and charismatic, naturally supportive and collaborative in spirit, he is indeed a true Valley Treasure.
