2016 Dakar Champion Toby Price (#295 KTM 500 EXC-F) has added another Tatts Finke Desert Race title to his name, being crowned King of the Desert for the sixth time in nine years today in Alice Springs. Price managed to seal the win despite falling off his bike with 100 kilometres to go, taking victory after a 1 hour 57 minutes and 39.5 second journey back from Finke today. The Red Bull racer crossed the line over 10 minutes ahead of Alice Spring’s David Walsh (#299 KTM 500 EXC-F) in second place.
“2010 was a surprise and who would have thought we’d be here celebrating number SIX today,” Toby Price said

“I love coming back to Finke and playing in the red dirt, it’s always a good time. “We’re pumped to have got another win... David made it pretty hard for us and we definitely had to push on the way home because from where David came from yesterday, I thought he was definitely going to push today.
“We tried to push hard but the track w a s b r u t a l a n d we h a d a n o ff a t t h e 100km mark, which rattled us a little bit and scratched the helmet up. I’ve got a bit of a sore neck, but we’re here, we’re happy and I haven’t got a bad time so I can’t complain.” Toby Price said

The win was sweet solace to Price after recording a DNF in his trophy truck this morning, putting an end to his promising Iron Man Double campaign. “Unfortunately we blew a power steering pump,” Price explained.
“I’m a pretty big guy but it would have wrecked my bike race if I had tried to wheel the truck back, so we had to park the truck on the side of the track and chopper our way back to Finke and set out to try and win for the sixth time out here.”

Local Walsh was depleted of energy upon arrival in Alice Springs and was happy to make the podium after a gruelling weekend. The KTM rider was greeted by a huge cheer from family and local fans. Sidelined due to injury in 2017, 22-year old Jack Simpson (#296 KTM 500 EXC-F) was thrilled to finish third in Australia’s toughest off-road race in his rookie year on the KTM 500. The Victorian finished fourth on Sunday and moved through the field in an impressive 2 hours, 12 minutes and 22.5 seconds today.

AUSTRALIA’S MOST METALLY TOUGH PHYSICALLY DEMANDING DESERT RACE, Hattah (near Mildura, Victoria) has also claimed many a machine over its twenty-one years, and the 2018 instalment didn’t disappoint race fans. In a three day spectacular, starting at Red Cliffs Friday evening with the event sign on and meet and greet for 800 entries. Saturday is for Junior Competition with the added flavour of Senior Prologue setting the starting order for Sunday competitors, plus extra spice with the ten shootouts. Saturday, spectacular clouds engulfed the area producing misty rain, with the bitterly cold wind, the warmth from the sun was welcomed. The Senior Prologue was in the order of 2017 Penrite Hattah finishers. Daniel Milner was first to set out on the loop; the 2017 Champion was fast on his KTM producing a 2:38.08 lap time. After finishing the event in second place two years in a row Daniel Sanders came to win, and his determination all started at the prologue beating Milners time by 1.069 seconds (2:37.011). Josh Green posted the

third fastest time followed by, Lyndon Snodgrass, Callum Norton, Ryan Shadbolt, Nathan Tigg, Jack Simpson, Riley Graham an Jacob Smith. In the top ten shootouts Daniel Sanders would beat his own prologue time 2:36.256, followed by Daniel Milner, Lyndon Snodgrass, Riley Graham, Josh Green, Nathan Trigg, Callum Norton, Jack Simpson, Ryan Shadbolt and Jacob Smith. Wagga Motorcycle Club’s Byron Dennis won the Junior Small Wheel Outright. Dubbo Dirt Bike Club’s Jack Deveson took out the 9-Under 13 65cc Class. Rosebud’s Hunter Cameron won the 65cc 7 to Under 9 years. Coastal Motorcycle Club’s Brydie Hingston won the Girls 7 Under 12 years. Dandenong Motorcycle Club’s Tyran Tomich won the Big Wheel Outright and the 250cc 4-stroke 13 Under 16 years. North West Motorcycle Club’s Will Riordan won the 150cc 2-Stroke 13 under 16 years. North West Motorcycle Club’s Gus Riordan won the 85cc 2-Stroke /150cc 4 Stroke 12 under 16 years. Cobram Motorcycle Club Madi Healey won the Girls 12 Under 16 years. Gawler Motorcycle Club’s Tom Stafford won the 200cc 2-Stroke 13 Under 16. Sunday’s race was action-packed, a unique skill set is required for Hattah, the mallee sand, clay, is technical and with the Mildura Region being

quite dry produced flat edged whoops as the sand compacts. The wet mallee sand has a little ‘give’ in it and is quite demanding on the human body and a machine. The motorcycle has to be prepared for fast sections, tight, rough sections, as well as having enough fuel to complete a 38-kilometre loop at a race pace. Daniel Sanders was hot to trot out in front; Daniel Milner was playing catchup. However, it was a routine pit stop for Milner where Hattah 2018 came unstuck. After the refuel the KTM would not restart, the team frantically grabbed tools however the KTM would not budge, shouts from the crowd “push start it,” while the team tried tools and equipment, then the good old bike sprint began, all in front of the live TV coverage, however, the KTM still would not spark into life. Milner’s rivals began to pass the 2017 Champ, once the bike was started, Milner was back on the pace moving past the competition in an attempt to regain his overall. Motul MXD athlete Callum Norton also had issues, the teenager had an electrical problem on the opening lap, forcing him to return to the pits, once the issue was corrected the entire 400 rider field had departed on their first lap. He would make his way to ninth overall and fourth in the 450cc 4-Stroke Class over the 4-hour race duration.

Megan Rutledge won the Tenacious Women of Hattah. She was in sixty-ninth position outright when she won the class and signalised to officials that she would like to attempt the eight-lap challenge, a flat tyre would prevent her from achieving that feat. “Am awesome day, really dry conditions,” stated Daniel Sanders after the race, “It was really good to win it from start to finish a clean sweep from the prologue to the top 10 shootout, lead every lap. I trained really hard for it, and I can’t thank the team enough. It is an awesome feeling to get the win.” concluded Sanders. In the spirit of sportsmanship, ‘Chucky’ took a little breather after 4 hours on the bike and helped a fellow competitor push his lifeless machine over the finish line. Top 10 Outright, Daniel Sanders, Josh Green, Lydon Snodgrass, Daniel Milner, Nathan Trigg, Jack Simpson, Angus Gelly, Fraser Higlett, Callum Norton and Jacob Smith. Raising the bar of adventure to heights never before witnessed, the third-annual KTM Australia Adventure Rallye, held from 1st to 8th June, marked a true first for the KTM Adventure family, resulting in an experience that will remain with every rider for a lifetime. True adventure was thoroughly enjoyed as the 244 participants camped beneath the stars every night of the journey, which travelled 2700-kilometres in seven days, from the magnificent Maryfield Station through to witnessing the start of the iconic Finke Desert Race where KTM-mounted trio Toby Price, David Walsh and Jack Simpson ultimately swept the outright podium.

In between, the Rallye traversed all kinds of awe-inspiring locations, including Heytesbury Cattle Co’s Humbert River Station to North Star Pastoral’s Limbunya Station via the spectacular Gregory National Park, Suplejack Downs Station and, finally, from Tilmouth Well through to Desert Edge Motorcycles in Alice Springs where the final bivouac was reached! North Star Pastoral played an instrumental role in the 2018 Rallye, generously opening their stations and providing the utmost hospitality for riders and staff who were involved in the epic adventure. Without North Star Pastoral, the Outback Run wouldn’t have been possible. They also featured as title sponsor of the factory North Star Pastoral KTM Desert Racing Team at Finke.

A total of 45 staff were on hand to deliver an adventure of the scale that has never been undertaken previously, including representatives from KTM Australia, North Star Pastoral, Motorex Australia and a range of highly-valued volunteers. Factory support was also appreciated in the form of KTM Marketing Technician Clemens Maschler making his way to Australia for the event. Extensive support including road trains containing luggage, lights, power and a purpose-built kitchen were welcomed, as were helicopters and 4WD back-up vehicles, plus a Royal Flying Doctor Service 4WD. It was a moving roadshow catering for 300 people in ultra-remote areas of the Northern Territory. The KTM Australia Adventure Rallye: Outback Run brought about a fantastic camaraderie, as many riders ventured outside of their comfort zone to rise to the occasion of camping and riding in rugged outback landscapes. Many accomplished what they never thought possible, making for an amazing sense of achievement. Near 90 percent of riders completed the Rallye and each received a special finisher memento for their achievement. Some riders elected to depart the official route and make their own way back to their chosen base prior to its conclusion. A community partnership with Royal Flying Doctor Service - in which riders were encouraged to raise funds through the Everydayhero website in addition to donations made during the event - resulted in a remarkable $108,131.65 raised collectively. Part of that fundraising included KTM Australia auctioning off the coveted ‘001 Rider Spot’, with proceeds going to RFDS.

MX1 FERRIS MAKES IT SIX THOR MX1 OVERALLS ON THE TROT At a thrilling sixth round of the 2018 Pirelli MX Nationals at Conondale, QLD, CDR Yamaha Monster Energy Team’s Dean Ferris continued to take the Thor MX1 class by storm as he claimed his fifth perfect round of the year. The paper results don’t tell the entire story though, with Ferris having to run down the front-runners in each race. At the end of the day, though, the defending champion took a spotless 1-1 scorecard from Conondale, ahead of Penrite Honda Racing’s Brett Metcalfe and DPH Motorsport Husqvarna’s Kade Mosig. KTM Motocross Racing Team’s Luke Clout charged to the front of the opening Thor MX1 moto, but relinquished his lead on the third lap to a rampant Ferris. A mistake soon after saw Mosig slide by Clout on his way to second place, while Metcalfe fought his way to third. Raceline Pirelli KTM’s rookie star Mitch Evans and Clout filled the top five. In the second Thor MX1 outing, Evans snagged the holeshot, but Mosig led the field through the opening laps, despite a temporary assault from Clout. Overcoming a dismal start, Ferris sniped his way past Mosig for the lead on the eighth lap. Behind him, Metcalfe got involved in a small tangle with Clout but remounted and took the bit between his teeth as he charged to second, just one second behind Ferris. Clout rounded out the podium, with Caleb Ward (Davey Motorsport Husqvarna) fourth and Mosig fifth. The 2018 Pirelli MX Nationals will recommence at Ranch MX, NSW, for the second double-header event, on 14-15 July.

MX2 TODD PERFECT IN PIRELLI MX2 CLASS Fresh off the five-week mid-season break, Serco Yamaha’s Pirelli MX2 championship leader Wilson Todd has continued to extend his series lead with a brace of race victories around the fast, flowing Conondale hills. While Todd stood atop the day’s overall podium, early championship leader Aaron Tanti (Complete Parts Kawasaki Racing) showed a return to form with second overall, ahead of Penrite Pirelli CRF Honda Racing’s Kyle Webster. After setting the pace in qualifying, Todd claimed the holeshot of the opening race, but was quickly overtaken by Tanti before a small crash on the sixth lap allowed Todd to again earn the lead. Todd pulled an impressive 14-second lead over Tanti by the end of the race, with Yamalube Yamaha pilot Jay Wilson in third. Dylan Wills (DPH Motorsport Husqvarna) and Webster rounded out the top five. In the Pirelli MX2’s second outing, Tanti and Webster diced several times in the opening lap before a surging Todd took command of the race in on lap two and was never headed on his way to a 9.5-second victory. Tanti stormed home to a second runner-up place for the day, with Webster

MXD MCKAY HANGS TOUGH FOR MOTUL MXD VICTORY Bulk Nutrients WBR Yamaha young gun Hugh McKay took a hard-fought overall victory in the always-tight Motul MD class around the picturesque Green Park circuit. Mackay traded race wins with Kiwi Maximus Purvis (JCR Altherm Yamaha) on his way to the day’s overall, with Yamaha’s Brodie Ellis and KTM’s Mason Rowe enjoying consistent days on their way to overall podium positions. In the opening Motul MXD race Davey Motorsports KTM’s championship leader Morgan Fogarty claimed the holeshot, but a mistake on the second lap saw Honda pilot Rhys Budd take over the lead, before he too surrendered it to McKay on the fourth lap. Fogarty finished second, ahead of Ellis, Riley Dukes (KTM) and Jye Dickson (Raceline Performance KTM). In the second race, Purvis led the opening laps before Fogarty moved past for the lead on lap three. Fogarty led several laps before a mistake again let Purvis by. Purvis, raced to a 10-second lead over Queensland local Mason Rowe (KTM) and McKay, who clawed his way back from a horror start. Ellis crossed the line in fourth and Dukes in fifth. The 2018 Pirelli MX Nationals will recommence at Ranch MX, NSW, for the second double-header event, on 14-15 July.

1 FAVOURITE TRACK? In Australia, Rosebud, and Toowoomba. Rosebud is a really cool sand track in Victoria and I’ve rode it through the week when it gets really rough and technical. Toowoomba is fun because I’ve always done well there. So much time can be made up out-braking each other down the big hills and who can take the biggest risks, plus the ruts there are always ridiculously deep.

He’s an Australian Wheelchair racer, and for me it’s not even so much about what he has achieved on the track which is alot but more so what he’s done off the track. He’s a huge advocate for the disabled, and does so much to raise awareness. I have quite a few friends in wheelchairs, even my best mate so I think what he’s done is pretty amazing.

HARDEST RACE OF ALL TIME? Valkenswaard when I was racing GP’s. The track was hard and it’s nothing like we have it home but it wasn’t even that. I was emotionally done, I knew I needed to come home, I was so unhappy and those three races that weekend were the longest of my life.

MOST MEMORABLE RACING MOMENT? Probably Aus-X Open last year. It had been a really average few seasons and a part of me just didn’t know if I would ever be back on the podium. That race in front of a huge crowd and also doing it for my wife and daughter made that result the most memorable.

FAVOURITE FOOD? Anything sweet. I’m a massive sweet tooth so milkshakes, chocolate, biscuits, ice cream... I would eat them all at once.

BINGE WATCH A TELEVISION SERIES OR A MOVIE? If I start a Netflix series I can pretty much get it all done in a day. I’d take a series any day.

CAMP AT THE TRACK OR STAY AT A HOTEL? I really love camping at the track, it’s what I did as a kid and some of my best memories are from staying at the track. It doesn’t happen a lot these days but I do really like it.

DREAM HOLIDAY DESTINATION? It’s probably a bit random but Argentina. If I didn’t race there I would never have thought to go there. When I went in 2017 it was incredible, it’s probably the most beautiful place I’ve been to. Because I went when I was racing I guess I didn’t get to see or do as much as you would if you went there on holidays but I would love to go back there one day and take the family. Oh and the chocolate and ice cream there is ridiculous. Like reaaaaaallllly reallllly good.

DO YOU PLAY FORTNITE? Hell no, don’t even own a PlayStation or Xbox. But I can name every character out of In The Night Garden (Kid Show). No time for Fortnite in my house, plus I live on the Gold Coast so we don’t spend a lot of time inside. Either I’m training, out on the mountain bike, surfing or at the beach.

MID-SEASON RECHARGE BACK ON TOUR AFTER A 5 WEEK BREAK. WHO CAN CONQUER THE SECOND HALF OF THE MX NATIONALS?
It’s crazy to think that we are already past the half way point of the 2018 Mx Nationals season. All the endless months of preseason training, team preparation, testing, development and progress is now showing both on the race track and in the championship. Have all the riders on the track hit their marks in the 2018 season and can say they are satisfied so far? The most likely answer would be no, many riders will be searching coming into the second half of the season. Each rider will be searching for their own key turning point. Starts, intensity, fitness, bike set up, suspension.. the list goes on.

As we have just returned from the mid-season break let’s talk about what the riders would have had time to address in the five weeks since Murray Bridge and how that can affect their performance in the second half of the season. MENTAL RECHARGEFor most of the riders on tour, the first five rounds of the series will have been over in the blink of an eye. Between the travel, racing, preparation and weekly routine the weeks fly by. The five week break in the mid-season is a crucial opportunity for riders to take a brief time out and reflect mentally on where their season is currently sitting in regards to their goals and game plan coming in. This can be in the form of a week off that many riders favour after round five, before getting back into the grind feeling refreshed and focused. I am a big believer that at the elite level of the Mx Nationals the mental side of the sport is more important than rider skill and equipment. A rider has to believe he can win and often weeks on end of not hitting your marks at the race track can leave an overwhelming sense of under achievement and a damage to confidence. Being in familiar surroundings, staying home and training with no distractions allows a recharge of the batteries mentally that some riders will use to their advantage to come out swinging for the second half of the season.

TESTING & BIKE SET UPIt is extremely difficult to replicate the rough terrain and race conditions at the mx nationals. It is even harder to chase a comfortable and efficient bike set up whether it be your suspension or motor package during the season. The midseason break is a time often utilised by teams and privateers alike to work on their base settings from the pre-season and also the first five rounds. Some riders will be chasing comfort and a feel on the rough and demanding MXN tracks, others will be looking for a firmer setting and chasing stability at high speed after building on their preseason speed in the opening five rounds. Whatever a rider is chasing, the break can allow them a vital few weeks to improve on their set ups to the degree of finding confidence and speed on the race track.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONINGAs mentioned above it is very difficult to replicate effectively the conditions at the MXN. This also applies to the intensity of racing and the fitness levels required to run up front for a full twenty to thirty minute moto. Riders will have to balance a fine line between rehabbing nagging injuries from the first half of the season, maintaining a cardio and strength base along with pushing to find a little extra endurance at the end of the moto’s. Go too hard in the midseason break and a rider runs the risk of feeling flat and fatigued later in the year. The flip side, not implementing a program that encompasses all of the above and a rider will be found on the back foot for later in the season, feeling the effects of nagging injuries, being under conditioned and not strong enough down the stretch. SKILLS AND TECHNIQUEAt the elite level it might seem odd to hear us talking about skills and technique. However even the pro’s need to reinforce positive technique in their riding style and evaluate their weaknesses. How many times do you hear riders speaking of the importance of a good start? Here is a five week opportunity for riders to fry some clutches and really nail that start technique in hopes of better track position in the second half of the series gate drops. The same go’s for corner speed, ruts, entry speed etc. Teams and privateers alike will be evaluating what they need to work on to find those valuable tenths of seconds in each section that will lead to faster qualifying times, better gate pick and track position and ultimately better results. What are the best results you have had working for a race team: Winning the 2016 MX2 championship with Jed Beaton. Who has been your most memorable rider to work with: Craig Anderson as he is a multiple time Australian champion and Kade Mosig as I was with him for his first overall win in the premier class in 2014. Who have you spanned for over the years: Danny Anderson, Craig Anderson, Kade Mosig, Jacob Wright, Josh Hill, Lawson Bopping, Jed Beaton and Josh Demuth. What has been your favorite motorcycle to work on: YZ250F 2017/2018. What tools are a must have for you on the start line/mechanics area: 8 and 10 mm T-Bar, Phillips head screw driver, flat blade screw driver, set of allen keys, Mud scraper, Pit board marker and a rag and a bottle of water. What is the last thing you say to a rider before they go out to race: Focus on your start, keep it simple, consistent laps and back yourself.
