RIVALRY IS THE MISSING ELEMENT WE NEED IN THE MODERN ERA Y

ou cant deny that rivalry is a key element for both fans and athletes alike in every sport, Supercross like many high octane action

sports is no exception with many notable rivalries spreading over the few decades, McGrath vs Carmichael, Reed vs Stewart and now one of the hottest boiling rivalries Moss vs Reardon. It has been quite some time since Australian motocross has seen such a feud between two top athletes, having to look back almost three decades to the 08

day of Craig Dack and Glenn Bell prior to them Stephen Gall and Anthony Gunter. The days of true hard hitting motocross racing onboard the 500cc machines saw allot of die hard fans supporting the battles and the rivalries to the very end is what has shaped the sport into what we see today. AFL has Collingwood vs Essendon V8 supercars has Holden vs Ford and now after a long time Australian motocross is starting to see the rise of Reardon vs Moss. 09

He’s certainly capable of it, so if he gets more seat time and better starts he’ll be able to turn the tables on the privateers he’s surrounded by.

RACE RECAP - DAN REARDON CDR Yamaha rider on Jimboomba win and intense Moss battle - Powered by motoonline.com.au

Dan, welcome back to the top of the Australian supercross box! It’s been a while since we’ve seen you up here. Yeah, it’s been a while hasn’t it? I think the last time I won a supercross was at the Perth round of the Super X back in… 2009 I think? It’s only days like today after the event where you sit back and think about how long it’s been. On the night your focus is all about being in the moment but yeah, it’s been a long time since I was up front. My emotions didn’t get the best of me all night either, so that’s a good thing seeing as it’s been that long.

What did you think of the Jimboomba round as a whole?

It was very different to the first round at Bathurst where we had rain and the track was very technical and rutted. Jimboomba was the complete opposite and was very hard-pack, but broke away and crumbled a bit as the night went on. I rode the press day and knew it’d be a hard-pack, but when it’s like that you have to be very patient and use a lot of finesse in order to go faster. We had a good game plan coming into the weekend and it worked out well and it was a good feeling to leave with the series lead. 37

POWERED BY MOTOONLINE.COM.AU

There was a solid crowd at Jimboomba too, which must’ve been nice, seeing as it was a home round for you. Honestly, I think that’s what stood out to me the most – the amount of people who are just as excited to see me back racing as I am. I have a lot more fans than I thought and that made the weekend even more special. There were a lot of faces there that I hadn’t seen in a long time and it brought home just how much of a family atmosphere exists in racing.

There’s a pretty fierce battle simmering between you and Matt Moss now. First of all you had to line up beside him in the Dash for Cash. Were there any nerves there? I didn’t think too much of it. Our plan was to do well in the main event and use the Dash for Cash to try different sections that I hadn’t used since practice and give myself some options. It was always going to me and Mossy at the end of that race. We both went off-track a couple of times and put on a show, but in the big scheme of things it’s a small part of the night and it would’ve done neither of us any favours to end up on the ground. At the end of the day though, I don’t mind a bit of rubbing, that’s for sure. 38

Well the first few laps of the main were pretty intense between you and Mossy too. Take us through it from your point of view. I got a reasonable start even though I clipped the back of Kirk Gibbs in the first turn. I quickly got into second behind Moss and was thinking of the game plan and how I wanted the race to pan out, but after the first lap I thought ‘let’s go racing now’. I started to be a bit more aggressive, but still rode extremely clean; no part of me wanted to put Matt on the ground. If I wanted to clean him out it’s too easy to do it in supercross, but that’s not what I’m about. I want to go racing and I love a good battle. It was a shame he went down as I was looking forward to racing like that for 20 laps.

After Mossy crashed the pressure was off you a bit, but you still kept clicking off really quick lap times. I actually didn’t know he’d crashed for another two laps, but as soon as I got that signal I put the hammer down. The whoops got the better of me a couple of times and I had a couple of Excitebike moments, but apart from that it was a solid main. It was one of those tracks where it was really hard to make up time, but it was very easy to make a mistake and lose ground.

Well, with both motocross and supercross round wins in your pocket now this year, you’ve proved you’re definitely back on top. How much of a confidence booster has the past couple of weeks been? It’s definitely helped the ball continue to roll. We put our best foot forward at Bathurst and knew straight away what we needed to work on. They’re only little things, but they all make a big difference. We’ll continue to push that line and make sure we get stronger. Now that we’ve got the red plate everything is falling into place. The main goal now is to sustain that and keep it at the end of the championship.

How to Install your Suspension properly after you have had it tuned or Serviced.

So you’ve received your suspension back from your local suspension tuner. Now what to do and how do you install it back into your bike properly? Most riders neglect these steps which could lead to performance issue’s and potentially leave riders unhappy and looking for answers.

1

Once you’ve got your suspension back from your tuner, it’s normally being laying down flat in a box, its always a good idea before installing to pump the fork up and

down approx. 10 times to bleed the cartridge, depending on what type of fork you have. You should also release the air from the air bleed screws before installing into the bike. 43

it can cause a slight distortion of the fork outer, bearing in mind that the inner part of the fork needs to slide right over that area, so if it’s too tight, it can cause distortion and cause the fork to have a harsh spot half way up through its stroke. Most times we’re looking at between 12nm to 21nm for the bottom and 17nm to 22nm for the top. Once we’ve installed the forks and tensioned them down to the manufacturers specifications you can then go on to fitting the front wheel.

in

mind

the importance of the alignment of the lower

part of the fork - Lubrication to the axel and the freedom of the axel through the axel lugs is very important. Before you put the front wheel in, push the axel right through the axel lug to make sure it goes through freely. This will help later on with the alignment of the fork. Once you’ve done this it’s now time to install the front wheel. Once you’ve got the front wheel into position, slide the axel through. Make sure the axel is greased and well lubricated, the most important part of the axel to be greased is the last bit that you are holding onto, this is the only part of the fork that is allowed to actually float on the axel, very important for lining up and having a parallel fork. Axel through and tighten axel nut to manufacturers specification. Sitting on the bike, lock down the left hand axel lugs and tension off the axel nut. Once this is done, leave the right hand (sitting on the bike) axel lug loose. Well come back to this once you’ve got the shock installed.

QUESTIONS WITH LUKE ARBON

Tell us about your decision to withdraw from the Motocross season, and how it feels to finally be back on the bike racing Supercross. The main reason I had to pull out of the Motocross was pretty much safety. I was struggling really badly with an illness and I couldn’t really hold on after ten minutes, so the last two national rounds I did I was pretty lucky I didn’t have a big crash because I pretty much couldn’t hold on for the last half of the races. So between safety and knowing I was going to the races not being able to give 100 per cent or anywhere close to that. I saw the doctor and he advised me to have a month or two off the bike and just rest up. I had that time off and listened to the doctor and just did everything right and now my health is back on track. Being back on the bike now is awesome, it’s fun again and I can ride to my potential and actually finish the race (laughs). It feels good to be able to train and ride during the day, and not having to go to sleep, so it feels awesome to have my health back. 62

Motocross or Supercross? It depends really. I think growing up I always liked Supercross, I love the jumps and the technical side of things, you know the crowd and racing under lights, I’ve always loved that. It’s a bit more of a show I suppose. But in saying that, when Supercross is all over it’s always cool to go back and ride Motocross and hold it wide open. It’s hard to pick a favorite, I just love riding my bike. First car? It was a white Hiace van. When I bought it, it was that low that it basically had no suspension in it, so dad made me raise it to make it more legal (laughs). It had black wheels though – I painted the wheels black and then she was good to go. Favorite Australian track and why? It’s probably Coonabarabran, that track was always cool. Just because it was so big, and fast and had decent jumps. Most embarrassing racing moment? Probably this year I reckon. Not being able to hold on and going from third to tenth, that’s pretty embarrassing. Least favorite rider to race? Ohhh that’s a hard one. The lites class this year has been so packed and there are probably about ten of us that have a similar pace. But when I was in juniors it was probably Tye Simmonds, whenever I got to the races and he was there, I knew I had my work cut out for me. 63

American import Jimmy Decotis has shocked Australia with undefeated results.

You’ve raced two rounds of the Supercross here now, how do the tracks here compare to back home? The first round at BATHURST was a bit bigger than I am used to, but the sections were the same. Jimboomba was very similar. Supercross tracks will always vary because they need to be built with the venue in mind. I have liked the first two rounds.

65

It was quite controversial with Honda putting on a completely international team for the Supercross season, what’s your take on that? I think its sad really. Australians take rides in Europe and America and in Germany. Teams need to win and put their product out in front. Chad, Byrner, Metty for example took rides, so did Ferris and Moss. I work hard to be competitive and I want to race. Also people don’t take everything into consideration. They have ragged on Yarrive and the team. He had an Australian rider this year and invested money in him and sent him to America to train (Ford Dale). It’s not like the team doesn’t support Australians. He also helps the satellite teams with their sponsorships and riders. People have short memories. From what I have heard between 2008 when he started with Honda to 2014 he has supported lots of guys. In 2012 he supported Tye Simmonds, Jake Moss, DPH Honda, Peter Boyle, plus some juniors and I think even Luke

66

Clout. From the stories I hear he has been helping out people in Australia for the past 20 years. It’s just worked out this year that he needed a competitive team for Supercross and all of the top Aussie guys had rides. I know he was speaking to Metcalfe and Melross but they couldn’t commit. Like I said, it’s sad that people rag on him, he and the team are doing their job. Do you think there are guys racing here in Australia who could be competitive in America? The are some quick riders down under. Arbon, Crawford, Clout and of course Richardson are all competitive. Even the next five guys are quick. The difference between here and America is the top 20 guys are quick so its super competitive. I think with some time under their belts these top guys would be making mains. They just need to commit to a couple of seasons overseas and do the hard yards.

What do you think are the main things that could be done in Australia to improve Supercross? I talk to my boss about it as he has been working on Supercross for nearly 20 years here in Australia. Personally you guys are doing well. You have only 20 million people here and we have over 300 million, so I think for the size of the country you guys are doing well. I think the next step is TV. It made a massive impact on our sport. What’s the deal with your nickname ‘The Ripper’? A mate at home started calling me it, I think it was the sound of the two-stroke wide open and they used to say that I was ripping it up on the track. Would you ever consider racing a full Motocross and Supercross season in Australia? I love moto, I have been doing the Canadian Nationals the past two seasons. I think I would struggle here full time. Its expensive to live in Australia and the 250 guys aren’t on much sign on, and there aren’t too many 250 paid rides. Saying that, I have enjoyed the people, if it was affordable I would definitely consider it, but goal is still the same to win a AMA Supercross Championship. Having raced Supercross here now, what are you thoughts on a Supercross GP style championship in a bunch of different countries? Again Yarrive and I have talked about, and I know he has spoken to a few guys about it. It’s where it needs to go if we are going to get an international audience like F1 and Moto GP.

67

What are your plans for 2016? I will be racing Supercross in America and I am working on my other programs. Favorite thing about Australia so far? The people, they are so polite and accommodating. Its super nice to see people like this. The fans have also been awesome. I didn’t know I had this many fans over here. Everyone has been terrific to deal with. What do you miss most about home? My family. I have a huge family and they are all super supportive and its hard with racing. Not just here, but my program takes me away almost 30-40 weekends a year.

SX1 ROUND 2

BR EA K D OW N JIMBOOMBA

The 2015 Australian Supercross Championship fired into top gear with an action-packed round two staged in front of a capacity crowd at Jimboomba in southeast Queensland.

And when a fast-paced evening of full-throttle

Supercross action was all said and done, it was local CDR Yamaha rider Dan Reardon and visiting American Jimmy Decotis (Penrite Honda Racing) who scored victories in the SX1 and SX2 classes respectively.

For Queenslander Reardon, the Jimboomba

victory tasted extra sweet, as it’s been three years since he raced Supercross after coming out of retirement to race with the CDR Yamaha outfit this year.

“That feels so good to win,” enthused Reardon

from atop the Jimboomba X Stadium podium. “This is pretty much a home town race for me and it was so good to see so many people in the pits and at the track today who I’ve known for so many years. It feels great to get a win for them; I think I’m as happy as the fans tonight!”

With second/first placings in the opening

two rounds of the championship, Reardon has just out-pointed Moss (first/third results) for the championship lead, setting up what is sure to be a classic confrontation between the two arch-rivals.

Jimmy Decotis and his Honda Genuine Parts and Accessories-equipped Penrite Honda picked up just where they left off at Bathurst a week ago. While Decotis explained he took a little time to get a handle on the Jimboomba track, which was modeled on last year’s St Louis AMA Supercross race circuit, he certainly hit top gear in the final and simply motored away from the opposition. “Yeah, I had some struggles in practice, but then everything came good when it counted most,” said Decotis. “A good start in the final makes all the difference and once I got into a rhythm I could just ride my own race and come home with the win. “It feels awesome to get another win and to get so many cheers from all the Australian fans. I also have

to thank everyone in the Penrite Honda team, who have been looking after me so well and have given me the best equipment. Behind Decotis, a pair of fast young north Queensland racers filled the SX2 podium, with Jackson Richardson firing his Penrite Honda Wilson MX team CRF250R to the runner-up spot ahead of freshly-signed DPH Peter Stevens Yamaha rider Wade Hunter. For both Richardson and Hunter, it was their firstever trip to the podium in a national supercross event and both were rapt to share the honour. Rounding out the top five SX2 results at Jimboomba were class favourite Luke Clout (Serco Yamaha), who had to fight his way through the pack to finish fourth, while Geran Stapleton brought his Penrite Wilson Honda MX machine home in fifth.

CDR YAMAHA REARDON RACES TO POPULAR HOME TOWN ASX VICTORY

CDR Yamaha’s Dan Reardon raced to an enthralling victory at round two of the Australian Supercross Championship last night. In front of a near capacity crowd at the Jimboomba X Stadium circuit on a perfect night, Reardon bought his home town crowd to their feet as he crossed the finish line 12 seconds in front of his nearest rivals and take a popular win that now sees him move to the top of the championship table after two rounds. As the 20 rider SX1 main event blasted off, Reardon and long-time rival Matt Moss were instantly locked into battle with the pair changing positions and swapping paint in the opening laps. Reardon moved into the lead, then Moss retaliated before Reardon again drove his YZ450F up the inside of Moss and took the lead back. The battle was then cut short when Moss made mistake and Reardon raced off to a comfortable victory and he punched the air in celebration as he took the main event win. “It was a pretty intense start to the race but I was prepared to do that for the entire 20 laps if that’s what it took to get the win,” Reardon said. “My only concern with racing like that is that its slows the whole race down and you allow the other riders to stay a little closer but that’s how it played out tonight and I’m happy to get the win. “It was awesome to again race in front of a big crowd. The atmosphere of the event was good all day and there were plenty of people in and around the pits so well done to

Scott Bannan and his promotional team on a great event. “I also want to thank my team and my mechanic Brad. We put a new tyre of for the main event to handle the hard pack dirt and that’s about, my bike was perfect,” Reardon ends. Team mate Kade Mosig also improved his round one position of fifth to take fourth at Jimboomba. Mosig was also involved in several battles throughout the main event as he passed his way forward and as the race drew to a close, he was on the rear wheel of Matt Moss and pushing for a podium position. He was unable to make a pass and had to settle for fourth in an improved ride from the opening round. “Another step in the right direction and I felt my riding was a little bit better again tonight,” Mosig said. “It took me a couple of laps to get into it but then I felt good and my speed was consistent throughout the night. “The track was really hard pack dirt and finding traction wasn’t always easy so you couldn’t be overly aggressive especially in the turns. But fourth is better and with four rounds to go, hopefully the improvement can continue at every round,” Mosig said. The CDR Yamaha team are now well placed after two rounds of the Australian Supercross Championship, with Daniel Reardon leading the way and Kade Mosig sitting in third.
