ENJOY T H E H O LIDAYS As the day’s sun begins to set on the 2015 calendar I would like to thank all the teams, their staff, and riders for their great support and patronage across the 2015 championship series. I would like to pay a special thanks to those who sacrifice the most to be a part of the MX Nationals and that’s the families and privateers. Without these dedicated families and individuals the series would be nothing, they are the backbone of the series and we appreciate every single one of them and their families. The 2015 championship has shined bright with three first time, MX National champions across the three main categories MX1 Kirk Gibbs, MX2 Jay Wilson and MXD Wilson Todd. The addition of NRGTV has given great exposure to the series here in Australia and around the world. The channel has had over 250,0000 views across 136 different

countries in 2015, and with plans to expand the broadcast coverage, 2016 is already looking great. The addition of Inside Dirt digital has been very well received with over 25,000 down loads and over 100,000 paged reads, its also giving great exposure to teams and riders a like. I would like to thank the many volunteers who play a huge part in every round of the championship series, a special mention to all clubs as the track preparation this year has been first class. We have a dedicated team of people in our digital media department; they are all very dedicated to growing Motocross, its very enjoyable working and brainstorming with this very enthusiastic and dynamic group of people. There’s one large group of people who believe in the sport and the series, it wouldn’t be possible with out all of our official partners

and sponsons. Lastly, a big thanks to our partners at Motorcycling Australia. We have some very exciting plans for 2016 and are already counting down the days. 2016 will see more exposure for the series and the riders. We will have increase social and digital presences, there will be more rider engagement with the fans, and we will increase the broadcast coverage. 2016 will also see some other changes that will be announced in the New Year. On behalf of the team at WEM and the entire MX Nationals crew we would like to wish all a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe 2016. We look forward to delivering a bigger and better series in 2016. Cheers Kevin Williams

TOP 10 MOMENTS OF 2015 MOTORCYCLING LIKE ANY EXTREME SPORT, NEVER FAILS TO HAVE ITS FAIR SHARE OF HIGH AND LOW MOMENTS. FROM BIG CRASHES TO THE RETURN OF REED DOWN UNDER, THE 2015 CALENDAR HAS BEEN ONE OF THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL AND JAW DROPPING SEASONS IN MANY YEARS, SO WITHOUT FURTHER ADIEU HERE ARE THE TEN BIGGEST MOMENTS WE SAW IN 2015.

The return of the king Our 10th top moment was the return of one of the most successful Australian super bike riders of all time Troy Bayliss. The Taree born Bayliss famous for his three World Superbike Championships with Ducati, deciding that even at 46 years young he was able and ready to chuck the boots on for the final time at the 25th anniversary round of the famous Phillip Island Circuit. The 11th hour decision only presenting its self when Bayliss was already at the circuit competing in none other then the Baylistic scramble held on top of Lukey Heights. The return was one of the largest talking points of the entire weekend with fans exhilarated to see one of the true nice guys of the sport back on the bike in top form.

World champs back in Aus Going from flat track and superbikes we swing now to our ninth biggest moment, which was the hotly anticipated return of the World Speedway Championships, held in none other than the iconic Etihad Stadium in the Melbourne CBD. Fans would have to wait all year for the event, being the final round of the world championships, and if you were one of the 26,000 strong spectators who packed into the stadium you were in for a night of thrills spills and hard hitting action on and off the track. The event was such a success, that the Australian fans will be blessed with a repeat hosting the final round in Melbourne again in 2016.

Lives saved by Racesafe Undoubtedly worth a mention is the superb work performed through all disciplines by the very passionate group of volunteer doctors and surgeons making up the Racesafe crew. It is no surprise to anyone how physically demanding and dangerous motorsport really is, taking an enormous toll on the body. The ongoing time an effort put in by the Racesafe crew, spending countless hours of there own time just to see as many athletes as possible take the grid and complete in their respective championships. It is always a terrible thing to see anyone have a big crash but knowing the experience of these highly passionate individuals at the track certainly gives a little more peace to mind. The Racesafe crew in 2015 alone have saved eigjjt lives across the national competitions they took part in, and is undoubtedly one of the most amazing things in the sport. The Racesafe tam are an essential part of what now makes up any national competition.

RETURN OF Reardon For motocross fans, 2015 saw the return of one of the most popular guys in the pits and one of the fastest Aussie guys to ever swing a leg over a bike. Dan Reardon was back. Signing a last minute deal with Craig Dack and the CDR Yamaha Team a lot of curiosity surrounded the return of the former champ. Everyone knew his resume -taking both motocross and superiors titles in the past before heading to America competing with very solid results before Reardon decided to hang up his boots and step in to the athlete training field. A few things were certain when he returned, he was going to be fit and fast but just how fast DR was going to be was quickly shown, taking podium results early in the MX championship before getting the monkey off the back with an overall win at the Nowra round of the MX Nationals. From the end of Motocross, to the start of Supercross, the hype only seemed to grow and for good reason as Reardon came into the first round with a second place to previous champ Matt Moss whose antics on the track were a large talking point for the remainder of the championship. From there, things only got better for Reardon, dominating the rest of the Supercross Championship and eventually taking the title. One thing is clear; Reardon is back and goes into the 2016 championship as one of the hot favourites. 20

NRGTV Takes Moto Live One of the newest editions to the sport which has certainly taken motocross to another level, is the live streaming company of NRGTV. Never before seen in Australian Motocross is live television and with the addition of NRGTV to the 2015 program, prayers were certainly answered for fans who were able to watch their favourite riders week in week out live and on demand. Having the first full length racing packages saw fans getting excited about the sport once more seeing over 200,000 viewers over 89 different countries, getting to experience the high octane action of the MX Nationals. Seeing the show progress every week with close battles and some of the biggest crashes caught on tape, fans are certainly in for a treat with NRGTV confirming the deal with MX Nationals to stream the entire 2016 championship with extended coverage.

CDR the first to pounce The 111 machine is one very well known on the Australian circuit, however it has been a number of years since we saw Dean Ferris back in his homeland competing. At the end of 2012 Ferris elected to go to Europe to try his luck on the world stage and his results certainly did not disappoint. In his first year, taking podium results in the MX2 field before the step up to the premier MX1 class where Dean showed once more he had the pace to run with the best on the planet. It was no surprise when Ferris confirmed late this year he would make a return to Australia and that he was signed first for the 2016 calendar by none other then Craig Dack with the CDR Yamaha team. CDR’s reputation which speaks for itself, taking numerous titles is a sure talking point, and having the always fast Ferris back and hungry for a title, 2016 promises to be one of the most exciting MX Nationals seasons in recent years.

Waters takes on the world Todd Waters is without a doubt one of the strongest competitors the country has ever put out, but it was not until the 2015 GP of Italy that we saw him hit full stride. Waters has been competing in Europe for the past two years, seeing come up and down results in and outside of the top ten. But at the fifth round of the MXGP onboard his IceOne Redbull Factory Husqvarna everything seemed to click with an incredible third overall. Italy being one of the most challenging and controversial rounds of the entire season didn’t faze the north Queensland local, saying after the race, “I love racing in the mud the conditions certainly didn’t faze me, we worked really hard the two weeks before the race and I guess it paid off”. Known in Australia as the humble kid from the outback, and now known as one of the fastest guys on the planet, Todd is certainly a man to watch in 2016 as he has just signed the newest factory team in the Australian pits with Wilsons Suzuki. Waters will go into the 2016 MX Nationals season as another hot favourite. 26

AUS-X Open There was never any doubt from the first announcement early in 2015, that the AUS-X Open was going to be the most action packed motorcycling event of the year with two of the biggest rivals of all time James Stewart and Australians own Chad Reed set to go head to head in the biggest showdown ever in the country. Injuries saw Stewart unable to make the event however the Australian fans were not going to be let down with the one an only Ricky Carmichael making his first ever appearance down under. Alongside Carmichael was a contingent of some of the fastest riders on the planet, including Cooper Webb, Jimmy Decoits and Gavin Faith to name a few. With multiple events that weekend around Sydney Olympic Park, the stage was set for a showdown sure to keep fans on the edge of their seats. The night show was a complete sell out without a single seat unsold in Allophones Arena and once the event started, fans were kept with there jaws dropped with some of the best racing and most spectacular freestyle shows I myself have seen. The stadium itself was near impossible to hear inside of, with the screams of a very excited crowd loving every second of the spectacle that was the AUS-X open. Fans and industry alike are very excited to see the AUS-X Open back in 2016. 28

Pricey on the pipe One man who certainly needs no introduction in Australia or the world is the KTM backed Toby Price, the most dominant man in Australian off-road and desert racing whose accomplishments speak for themselves. However it is his result in the 2015 Dakar that is really a stand out, and gaining him the mention at number two. Toby going over to South America to compete in the event for his first time, came away with a stellar third place result overall. Dakar, which is known as the hardest race on the planet, and Toby having to learn navigation equipment, stood up for Australia and showed the world exactly what he is made of, even winning some stages at the world class event. Definitely the man to watch in the future, having just been the first ever Australian athlete to sign with Red Bull KTM for the 2016 Dakar competition. This is a massive achievement both for Price and his home country. One can only wonder how long it takes Price to stand on the top step of the podium above the world. 30

Gibbs gets the job done Anybody trackside at the final round of the MX Nationals at Coolum in 2012 will remember the sickening crash out of the first turn between Kirk Gibbs and Errol Willis. The incident itself was so bad that Gibb’s life hung by a thread, however after being treated instantly by the Racesafe medical team, Gibbs was stabilised and transported to hospital. Many would say that one close call like this would be enough to hang up the boots, however that is not the case for a true champion like Kirk Gibbs. Not only did Gibbs get straight back on the bike but has now grown into a very dominant front runner known best as the diesel engine for his undeniable fitness and drive to get the win. Gibbs comes in at number one for not only showing a passionate love for the sport but the ability to put what happened behind him and wrap up the 2015 MX Nationals Championship only a couple of years near to the day on the track that so nearly claimed his life. Gibbs is a real inspiration and nice guy in the pits, making him a favourite with fans. Gibbs not only give grass roots riders a Champion that they can be proud to look up to, but his ability to overcome such adversity and get the job done is what makes him a true champion in our sport. Gibb’s career is only just starting to flourish, and will surely have many titles to come. 32

RACE RECAP - DAN REARDON Supercross champion Dan Reardon shares his victory - Powered by motoonline.com.au

Well, Dan, the comeback is complete and in the best possible way. You must be feeling on top of the world right now. It’s weird, actually. It still feels a little surreal. I’ve won three supercross championships before, with the last one being in 2007, but that seems like a lifetime ago now. Early in the year I had conversations with a few people where the championship was part of the plan, like Craig Dack asked me before he signed me if I could win a championship and I said ‘yeah, of course’. But at the same time I didn’t really think that would be the case, if I was to be honest. After the MX Nationals I wanted to put my head down and have a good pre-season for the supercross and I was solid all season, especially for this championship. Right now I couldn’t be happier.

59

POWERED BY MOTOONLINE.COM.AU

Coming into Melbourne the title was practically a done deal for you, but then you crashed in the heat and dislocated your shoulder. What happened? Things were going really well early on and I was feeling good in my heat and sitting in second. I hit a wall jump that I was jumping onto the flat and I guess I kinda lost focus on what the rear wheel was doing. I locked it up and stalled the bike as left the wall and it sent me over the bars. I landed straight on my stomach with my hands out then my bike hit me from behind. It kinda felt weird like I’d crushed my sternum or something and I knew straight away that my shoulder was dislocated. I was so thankful RACESAFE was right there and I just yelled at them to put my shoulder back in, whatever it took. I thought I needed to finish my heat to make the final, which wasn’t the case. Those last few laps to the flag were extremely tough. My bike was all twisted up and anyone who’s dislocated a shoulder knows how weird and uncomfortable it is. It definitely wasn’t fun.

What was the first thing that went through your mind when you dislocated your shoulder? It wasn’t so much ‘there goes my championship’ but more desperation that I just wanted my shoulder put in so I could still race in the main. At the time it wasn’t panic mode, but I was definitely concerned [laughs]. With a shoulder, the longer it’s out the more damage it does. I’m so relieved it went back in quickly.

How tough was that main, trying to complete the race with a wrecked shoulder?

It was really tough. Straight after the crash I went to RACESAFE and I was there for about an hour and a half. They strapped me up and gave me two Nurofen and two Panadol, but that was all I was allowed to take. I told them I don’t care about the pain, just to strap it up so that it doesn’t pop out again. To win the title I still had to complete at least 75 percent of the main. If I didn’t, and if Kade finished first or second, he would’ve won the championship, so there was definitely a lot at stake. I ended up completing the whole race and finished seventh. I was just relieved to cross the line. 60

You certainly went through a lot to claim this championship. There was some big battles with Mossy early on before he was injured at Sydney, but it seemed that more often that not, you had the upper-hand on him. I had a lot of fun racing against him, for sure, but at the end of the day I think I took his game plan and used it against him. I was surprised that he didn’t race Melbourne, but a corked thigh can hurt. It was interesting seeing a pic of him testing a new bike on social media already though.

Looking back on the year as a whole, what stands out as the highlight for you?

There are so many and on so many different levels. Of course this championship stands out, but I think the biggest thing was back in March when I was talking down the street in the Gold Coast, going from shop to shop asking for a race-plan and no-one would give it to me. To win a title eight months later, that’s the biggest thing. I don’t blame anyone for not believing in me, but the motivation I had this year was incredible.

As far as we’ve heard, you’ve yet to sign a deal for next year. Can you give us the inside word on that? Nothing is confirmed yet, but there aren’t many riders left to firm up deals. More than likely I’ll remain in Australia and there should be an announcement in the next week or so. The US has shown some close interest over the past few weeks as well; it’s been so good to see the sport in Australia stepping up and getting worldwide attention from top athletes and teams.

For sure. What are your plans for the off-season? Well the plan was to surf, shoot and mountain bike, but I’m going to get an MRI on my shoulder tomorrow and I’ll know then what damage has been done. It feels pretty good compared to other shoulder injuries I’ve had so I’m remaining optimistic that it won’t be too serious. We’ll take a couple of weeks off and see how things are. 61

Feel the Performance When you are in a competition and you want to win, you need to be prepared. Lining up is not enough. Off the bike you need to train, fuel your body with the right nutrients, and spend time recovering. On the bike you need to practice your techniques, improve your race fitness and test your motorcycle. The motorcycle that rolls out of your respective dealership needs customising to suit your height, weight and skill level. TECH TIPS POWERED BY SPMOTOSPORT.COM.AU

Simple Maintenance you can do to your own bike to make it feel fresh over the holidays So, we are approaching the summer holidays which means time off work and more time to ride and that leads to more maintenance for your dirt bike.

Let’s go through some simple maintenance for your

bike to make what you have feel the very best it can be even if it’s not the latest and greatest on the market these tips can make a real difference to even the oldest of bikes, and may just save you some money in the long run.

Brake your bike down to sections, this will help you

For me personally the first place to start is the riders

controls, I can’t stand a notchy front brake lever, a stiff clutch action or a quick adjust that is that full of dirt you can’t even change the free play in the cable, but that’s enough from me 65

Assemble the quick adjuster will a small amount of grease on the threads. Check free play. Front brake lever What to look for??? Pull the lever in very slowly, is it smooth or notchy? Foot pegs Easily over looked! I like to maintain good spring tension on my foot pegs. This can be obtained by removing the spring and bending it back on itself to give more preload. Lubricate the pins and then move your attention over to the foot peg teeth, use a file to sharpen up the teeth and keep the level. That concludes my riders control or cockpit

QUESTIONS WITH WADE HUNTER

Deal for next year? I’ll probably be swinging a hammer to be honest. I’ve been talking to some people but it’s getting a bit late in the year, so I’ll probably have to get back on the tools (laughs). Last song you listened to? Bit of Fetty Wap First car? I’ve had heaps of cars, especially when I was younger but I’m pretty sure my first car was a white Hilux. Did it up, sold it for way more than I bought it for, you know how it goes. Favorite Australian track and why? Fort Lytton. It’s just out of Brisbane and it’s just wide open with sick jumps, I love it.

72

Most embarrassing racing moment? I don’t really get embarrassed but some people might think this one is embarrassing. At a race in Queensland this year, I pulled off the track a lap early when I had the lead and gave the win to Nathan Crawford. Everyone else had a good laugh and thought it was pretty funny, I just thought the finish guy was showing me the last lap board when he was cheering me on for being in the lead. Least favorite rider to race? Probably Jay Wilson. When we first raced each other, we took each other out. He reckons I T-boned him, and I reckon he T-boned me, and that’s actually how we ended up being friends. Now we still fight about it, and I’m going to get him back for it one day (laughs).

In the SX1 class, CDR Yamaha team mates Dan Reardon and Kade Mosig had a lock on a comfortable one-two finish in the championship after defending two-time champion Matt Moss (Team Motul Suzuki) was a late non-starter in the final round due to injuries suffered the week before at round five at the AUS-X Open event in Sydney.

But in the SX1 heat race, a stunning

turn of events saw Mosig crash heavily and suffer a wrist injury, while just moments later, Reardon also hit the dirt and suffered a dislocated shoulder, which was hurriedly popped back in place by the RACESAFE Medical Team.

Suddenly the CDR Yamaha team’s

hopes of clinching the championship in fine style were thrown out the door, and it was only thanks to the ongoing treatment of the RACESAFE medics that both Reardon and Mosig could line up in the all-important final.

Remarkably Mosig holeshot the SX1

final and lead early, despite his injury, but before long succumbed to the pain and was hauled in by Lawson Bopping (DPH Peter Stevens Yamaha), heat race winner Daniel McCoy (SFC Racing Yamaha) and SX1 class wildcard entry Taylor Potter (Penrite Honda Racing), the trio ultimately going on to finish in that order and complete their championships with the podium placings for the night.

Behind them, Cheyne Boyd (Park4MX

Yamaha) posted an impressive fourth place finish, with Mosig holding on for fifth, followed by another former pro, Danny Ham (Maitland Motorcycles Suzuki) in sixth.

Then came Reardon in seventh,

SX2

In the SX2 championship, Lewis Woods (Davey Motorsports KTM) won the early heat race ahead of Decotis (Penrite Honda Racing) and Jackson Richardson (Penrite Honda Wilson MX) in a thrilling confrontation that set the stage for the final.

But in turn one of the SX2 main

event, a big tangle of riders saw Richardson scrambling to get into the action mid-pack, while Decotis was barged over the berm along with Geran Stapleton (Penrite Honda Wilson MX), the pair left dead-last by the time they eventually untangled and got back into the race.

Up front young gun Dylan Wills

(Newcastle KTM) made the early front running before a rear suspension issue derailed his hopes and saw Woods take the lead, until Wade Hunter (DPH Peter Stevens Yamaha) motored through to the frontrunning position, with a charging Richardson by now hot on his tail.

JATZ WINS LAST ROUND, DECOTIS THE 2015 CHAMPION 82

After a thrilling battle, Richardson

eventually took over first place and held it all the way to the chequered flag, with Hunter second and Woods third, followed by Joel Wightman (CRF Honda Racing) and Jack Simpson (Davey Motorsport KTM) who rounded out the top five.

“I felt fast all day and really liked the

track,” said a delighted Richardson after the event. “But then when I was mid-pack out of the start in the final, I just had to concentrate on putting down fast laps and getting through to the front, which is what I was able to do. Then when I got the lead, I just kept clicking off the laps to the finish, and to get the win is just the best way possible to wind out the championship.”

CDR YAMAHA CDR Yamaha secures ASX 1-2 result

On paper, the CDR Yamaha duo of Dan Reardon and Kade Mosig looked to have a comfortable margin over their rivals and poised for a 1-2 finish in the 2015 Australian Supercross Championship entering the sixth and final round of the championship, in Melbourne on Saturday Night. Reardon carried a 31 point lead in the championship into the final round over team mate, Mosig, while he was nine points clear of Matt Moss, who wasn’t competing at the final round due to injury. A championship 1-2 result seemed a formality. It proved anything but. Mosig grabbed the lead in the nights’ opening heat race and looked in good form as he controlled the race in the early stages. He then fell in spectacular fashion in a huge high side crash that took a huge chunk from his fore arm and he was assisted from the track. Just a few laps later, championship leader Dan Reardon, fell and got to his feet clutching at his shoulder. His right shoulder popped out and medics on the spot got it back into place, but the damage was done and he was in considerable pain. As the heat races wrapped up, both riders were in the Racesafe Medical Unit and unsure if they got even ride the 20 lap main event later in the evening. Both riders didn’t need to win, but they needed to circulate and with both carrying major injuries, both unsure if they even could ride and required to at least cover 15 laps of the 20 lap event to be deemed a finisher, their backs were well and truly against the wall.

Reardon walked from the medical area and directly to the start line. He was lining up and was going to do all he could to secure this championship. The gates dropped and Reardon took a very cautious approach as he circulated in the opening laps around 10th place. He couldn’t do the triple jump, he couldn’t ride the whoops with any speed and he had to preserve his body as best he could. By the half way stage, he made it to seventh place. With gritted teeth, Reardon rode through the pain to maintain his seventh place and secure his third Australian Supercross Championship in the premier SX1 division. Reardon “Despite the pain, it feels so good to win this championship and to think this was even possible just 12 months ago was crazy. Thank-you to everyone at CDR Yamaha for taking a chance on me at the start of the year, my family, friend and partner for their support and to the promoters of the championship this year. Also, the team at Racesafe as they continue to go a great job in assisting the riders and keeping us safe. “This championship means a lot to me,” Mosig “That was the longest, most painful 20 laps of my life,” Mosig stated. “The cut in my arm was deep so just even gripping the handlebars was tough and the opening laps I was unsure if I would be able to hang on through some of the sections on the track.
