We live in an instant environment, and although people may not attend events as frequently as they used to, motocross fans are certainly staying up to date, and watching the Australian MX Nationals series from a number of different places around the world. An accidental collision between CDR Yamaha team mates Dan Reardon and Kade Mosig during the opening moto at round three of the 2015 MX Nationals has slowed the progress of the CDR Yamaha duo in the points chase. Reardon and Mosig came together 10 minutes into the first race as they had raced away from the pack and setting lap times that would have seen the pair ride off into the distance from the chasing MX1 field. The collision resulted in a crash that saw Mosig on the ground and left to battle his way back to 12th place while Reardon was forced out of the race with damage to his water pump. The incident halted what looked to be a very promising day for the team with Reardon taking out the Superpole qualifying with a blistering lap and then the pair running away with moto one. Reardon rebounded for a solid second place in race two while Mosig could only manage an eighth place finish in a tough day for the CDR Yamaha team. Mosig now sits third in the championship despite the issues at Broadford while Reardon is in 10th. “It was an eventful day and something that I have never experienced in my time as a team manager,” states CDR’s Craig Dack. “Both riders were going well and with our nearest rivals having some problems in race one, it was the perfect opportunity to make up some points and pour the pressure on. “After moto one, we sat down as a team and talked through what happened and we will again do so during the week to reinforce the team structures and how we operate. I’m sure Kade and Dan are both professional enough to move on from what happened on Sunday and be back in the game come Murray Bridge,” Dack ends.

The Serco Yamaha team of Luke Clout and Jed Beaton flexed some muscle at round three of the 2015 MX Nationals, held at the Broadford Motorsport complex, Victoria, as they bought home a team 1-2 finish for the round and now hold down the top two spots in the MX2 championship chase. Luke Clout produced his best day of the championship so far, with a dominating display at Broadford. He posted the fastest lap in qualifying and took both moto wins, although moto two he was made to work for it. In the opening race, Clout charged his way to the front in the opening stages and slowly but surely began to pull away from the field. He stretched his lead out to a comfortable 10 seconds by the mid-way stage and then rode a smart race to bring home the win. Moto two saw the Serco duo up front early, with Beaton leading the way. Clout managed to slip by and the race was then on. Beaton shadowed Clout for the entire moto and never further away than 10 bike lengths, but could never get close enough to attempt a pass as Clout held his composure and raced to another race victory. “Today was just the day I was after,” Clout said. “I didn’t get the best of starts in either moto but I was able to get to the front early in the race and set the pace which is exactly what I wanted to do. “The win today was good but the benefit is that I was able to extend my lead in the championship. “The Broadford track today was in great shape and thanks to all the people that came out and supported the MX Nationals,” Clout ends. Jed Beaton returned to the podium after finishing fourth at round two. Beaton again proved that no one can slice through the pack like he can as he charged back from a poor start in race one. He battled his way all the way to third and was challenging for second place with just two corners to go when he went over the handlebars in a soft rutted turn. Fortunately, he
was able to remount quickly and hold onto third place. Moto two was much less eventful as Beaton pulled the holeshot only to come under attack from his team mate, Luke Clout. The pair raced away from the field as they conducted their in house dual all the way to the finish line with Clout finishing just metres ahead of Beaton. Jed’s 3-2 finish for the round gave him second overall and now moves him to second place in the championship. “I had to work hard for it today,” Beaton explains. “My start in moto one was terrible and I was a long way back just trying to get some clear track. I then caught up to Jay Wilson and tried to pass him on the outside of the second last turn and the front just dropped into this soft spot and was going over the bars. “Moto two was better but I just didn’t match Luke’s intensity in the opening laps. That’s something I need to work out. Still, it’s good to be up on the podium again and we still have a long way to go in the championship,” Beaton ends. On hand to watch his team in action was Serco Yamaha owner, Gavin Eales who left the Broadford circuit very happy with the riders’ performance. “It was a good day for the team and I’m proud of the way both riders performed today. Both of them put in 100% into every lap and came back with the best result possible for the team. “We now sit first and second in the championship with both riders settling into the championship nicely. Well done to Luke, Jed and the team on a great round and we now look forward to round four at Murray Bridge,” Eales ends.

GYTR YAMAHA TODD MAKES IT TWO ON THE TROT FOR GYTR YAMAHA
Wilson Todd has taken back to back round wins as he again came out the victor at round three of the MX Nationals, held at Broadford over the weekend. Riding for the GYTR Yamaha team and competing in the MXD division, Todd finished the day with 1-3 results to take the round win and make it his second in a row. Broadford has proved to be a good venue for the GYTR Yamaha team with team riders taking round victories there in 2011, 2013, 2014 and now in 2015. Todd started out the day strongly in moto one and slotting into second place in the early going. He made his move only a few laps into the race and took over the lead where he never let it go. He rode a well thought out race, just doing enough to keep his rivals at bay and make it a comfortable race win. Moto two wasn’t one out of the text book with the 17 year suffering a terrible start and forced to fight his way through the 34 rider field. He moved into the top five by the mid-way point and then was able to slot into the top three with a few laps to go which was more than enough to secure the round win.

Evans is now getting full X-rays done on the injury but is expected to miss the next two rounds. “It was a day of mixed emotions for the team,” states team Manager, Scott Bishop. “Wil is doing a great job in managing the points lead of the championship and doing exactly what is required, while we were all gutted with the injury to Mitch. He is a talented rider who is having a rough patch at the moment and the weekend was frustrating as it was no-ones fault, just a racing incident. “We are confident he will be back for the second half of the series and look forward to seeing him back to his best,” he ends.
“I thought I jumped ok in moto two but I locked bars with the rider alongside me and got off balance forcing me to shut it off. I’m not sure if I was last around the first turn but I wasn’t far away from it. I was too scared to turn around and find out. “But I was able to pass a lot of guys in the first couple of laps and when I got to third, Cory let me know the situation on the pit board, so I just maintained my position and finished the race safely. “I was able to gain a few more points in the championship today which was cool but its only round three and we still have a seven rounds to go and a lot of racing to do,” Todd signs off. The team also experienced another devastating blow when Mitch Evans injured his ankle in race one. Evans had just returned from a wrist injury and instantly recorded the fastest lap in qualifying when he was

M0TUL SUZUKI TOP FIVE PERFORMANCE FOR TEAM MOTUL SUZUKI’S KALE MAKEHAM AT BROADFORD
Team Motul Suzuki racer Kale Makeham has achieved a career best 5th place MX1 moto finish at the third round of the 2015 MX Nationals held at Broadford, Victoria on Sunday the 26th of April. In just his third ever event in the premier class of racing, the Suzuki RM-Z450 pilot continued his rapid rise to the pointy end of the field with another improved performance that also yielded the Victorian his best overall round result to-date, with a 7th place overall classification.
“Watching Kale on Sunday, his form is really good, he is definitely learning as a rider and will be a contender in the next couple of years. “It was also good to catch up with the fans and sign some autographs. That is what it is all about, I had a ball out there and really enjoyed the day. “I would have liked to be out there racing, but it was good to get out there and represent the team and our great sponsors and interact with the fans.
“My goal coming into the round was to get a top five moto result and I was able to do that,” Makeham commented.
“At this point in time the aim for myself is to be back for Murray Bridge in three weeks time, I am looking forward to it.” Moss added.
“Overall my fitness is good and my speed is good, I just need to continue to work on my race-craft and a few small things with the way I ride the bike and I think things will come to me easier.
Team Manager Jay Foreman was again pleased to see Makeham take more steps forward on the well prepared Broadford circuit.
“I am finding my feet in the class and know where I stand and exactly what I have to work on, it is just a matter of how quickly I can pick those things up and put them to use on race day. “The Motul Suzuki team was great again on Sunday and it was good to have Matt Moss there to offer advice. “After every session the whole team came together and talked about what was happening and offered advice on things I could work on, it was a big help.” Makeham added. While Matt Moss was unable to line up at Broadford due to the injuries he sustained at round two of the series at Appin, the current Australian Motocross and Supercross champion was on hand to meet and greet race fans as well as supporting his good friend and team-mate.
“The track was the best I have seen it for a while, it was not over watered and prepared well which helped make for a good day.” Foreman commented. “Kale improved again this weekend, especially in the first moto where he scored his best result of the year, he rode well and showed good speed. “He just needs to keep racing these guys up front every weekend, continue to pick up a little more in a couple of areas and learn from from these guys.” “It was good to have Matt at the track, even though he was unable to ride. It is not long now until he will be able to return to riding and at this stage he is looking to return to action at round four if all goes well.” Foreman concluded.
“It was good to be able to get out to the track and watch on Sunday,” Moss said. “I have a lot of good mates out there and obviously Kale is a good friend of mine and my team mate so it was good to be able to watch him in action and offer some advice.

RACELINE SUZUKI MADDEN TAKES THIRD PLACE ON THE PODIUM IN DEBUT FOR RACELINE
Raceline Pirelli Suzuki turned its luck around on the weekend, with fill in rider Jesse Madden delivering the team with their first Pirelli MXD class podium for 2015 at Broadford.
“It’s a bit of a shame that he got hit in the second moto and hurt his ankle a bit, but all in all we are happy to have turned our luck around and to see him standing on the podium at the end of the round was fantastic.
After a string of rider injuries, the Raceline team left the track smiling – Madden recording an outstanding second in moto one, and fifth in race two – handing the team third overall for round three.
“With three weeks until the next round, we’re just going to get him some more time on the bike and come out swinging at Murray Bridge.
Despite not having tested his race bike until the first practice session at Broadford, Madden gelled with the new Suzuki on one of the toughest tracks of the series – proving to Raceline that they made a smart investment signing the young gun for the remainder of the MX season. Jesse Madden – MXD – 3rd Overall – (2nd, 5th): “It was a really good weekend for me – I didn’t expect to get such a good result – I had been hoping for a top five, but I came away with third and I’m stoked,” he said. “In the second moto, I got a bit of a knock to the ankle and that put me in a bit of pain for the whole race, but I still managed to get fifth in that one and come away with third overall. “I had my first ride on the race bike in practice on Sunday, and I had only had two rides on the practice bike during the week, so I’m really happy that I was able to give the team the result I did on the weekend. “The team is great, and it was just awesome to be able to reward them for taking a gamble on me.” Jesse Wallace – Raceline Pirelli Suzuki Team Manager “We are very happy with how Jesse went on the weekend, especially given that he had next to no time on the Suzuki prior to the round,” he said. “To come out, and qualify fifth and battle up front in both motos, we’re very impressed – he definitely exceeded all of our expectations.

Penrite Honda Racing have commended organisers of last weekend’s MX Nationals event at Broadford Motorcycle Complex for delivering a pristine venue for the third round of Australia’s national motocross series. Acknowledging the venue was the best he had seen it, Team Principal Yarrive Konsky said the circuit was well prepared and provided great racing. “I have raced at Broadford Motorcycle Complex many times over the past 27 years and this is as good as I have seen it,” Konsky explained. “I would like to see some bigger jumps so the crowds can see what the riders and bikes are really capable of, but other than that the racing was great and the track was in prime condition.” While the team conducted a test day at the venue ahead of Appin, both Cody Cooper and Ford Dale said they were excited to race on the Broadford track following its transformation. “The track was really well prepared,” said Dale. “It was as good as I have raced on. It takes a lot of work to get a track right and the efforts that went into this weekend showed just what can be done. It would be great to have a couple of big hitting jumps, but the track itself was spot on,” he added Technical manager and fellow Victorian Steve Powel also acknowledged the efforts of organisers. “I have raced at Broadford many times through the good and the bad, and I have never seen it this good, other than at the GP’s,” Powel stated. “Full credit to Williams Event Management and the track crew for delivering a first-rate circuit.” The Penrite Honda Racing team are currently preparing for round four of the MX Nationals and hope to improve on their current positions.

WILSONS HONDA WILSON MX RECORD TOP RESULTS AT BROADFORD
Honda and Penrite backed Wilson MX, has recorded its best result so far this year, at round three of the MX Nationals in Broadford over the weekend. With both MX2 pilots heading to the round with improved results on their minds, the Wilson MX team delivered the goods with both Geran Stapleton and Luke Wilson making steady progress over the weekend. Stapleton, who was yet to impress so far this season, turned his luck around at Broadford, taking a sixth in race one and fourth in moto two, to finish one position short of the podium in fourth for the round.
“I had to come from about 26th through to 11th in race two, so it really opened my eyes to what I can do. “The 11th in the last race really showed that I’m capable of being inside that top ten, so I’m just going to work hard over the next three weeks on some qualifying laps, so I can get a better gate pick and get some starts. “My result on the weekend has definitely motivated me even more; I’m just looking forward to working hard and getting to the next round.” Neale Wilson – Wilson MX Team Manager
For Wilson, moto one proved to be a challenge, managing 19th place in a stacked MX2 class. However, despite bad luck in the early stages of the round, Wilson was able to redeem himself and claim 11th in race two, putting him in 17th overall for round three.
“The weekend was very good to us,” he said.

“In all seriousness though, we thought he may be a bit apprehensive given his back and spleen injury at Broadford last year, but he showed us what he can do and we couldn’t be happier.
“The weekend was definitely a step in the right direction for me, and I managed to stay upright too (laughs),” he said. “Leading into the round I was pretty vocal about how much I disliked the track, but honestly Broadford was the best I had ever seen it on the weekend. “The track got really rough and rutty, and the bikes handled the conditions perfectly. “I knew that if I could stay on the bike at round three that I could get a top five finish, so I’m pretty happy with how the whole weekend panned out.”
“We actually put a phone ban on Geran so he couldn’t get on Tinder, and you only have to look at his results to see that it worked (laughs)!
“We are obviously very happy with Luke. He put in such a solid charge in the final moto and we always knew he had it in him. If we can get a start he can definitely run with the top ten. “Both the boys are going to work hard over the next three weeks and hopefully we can have another good round at Murray Bridge.”

KTM RACING STYKE TAKES BROADFORD AS KTM SHARES THE WINS
KTM Motocross Racing Team rider Luke Styke has taken the first MX Nationals premier class race win of his career, then rapidly backed it up with his first MX1 round win, as the 2015 MX Nationals continued at Victoria’s Broadford circuit today. The class rookie continued to use his combination of speed and composure to fast track himself into title contention, Styke winning the day’s first moto then taking third in the next, to ensure the win ahead of Adam Monea and teammate Kirk Gibbs. Gibbs extended the championship lead he has held since the very first moto of this year’s series, on the back of a determined and incessant moto one showing where he surged back through the pack after falling not once, but twice. Gibbs made a better job of showcasing his superior speed and fitness in moto two, surging away from Dan Reardon at the back end of the day’s second moto to gather his third MX1 race win in as many rounds. Gibbs 7-1 result means he’ll take a 19-point lead into next month’s round in his home state of South Australia, with Styke making it a KTM 1-2 in the championship, 16 points clear of the next placed rider. Kirk Gibbs – “Second in the super Pole was good for points, and in the first moto was going all right, but early on I came together with John Phillips and went down so I had to regroup and get going again. I was charging, got up to third and was catching those front two boys, but was just pushing too hard and had another big crash, so it was just sort of damage control from there – trying to ride the best I could with my bike all bent up. It was a decent crash that second one so I’m going to be sore for a couple of days – a stupid mistake that could have been pretty costly. In the second moto I got a great start and I got into the lead pretty quick. Then Reardon had a couple of better lines and was riding well, but I knew if I stayed with him I could pressure towards the end. I made a little mistake and he got away from me, but I just put my head down and charged and chipped away at his lead, got back on and
just waited for my move. When I put it on him I just tried to sprint away at the end and I pulled out about a five or six second lead. I’m really happy to bounce back with a win, but I’m going to have to keep my bike off the deck in future, that’s not the way to win a championship, so I’ve got to be a little bit smarter with that.” Luke Styke – “It was good to get the monkey off the back in the first moto. It was great. I struggled a bit in qualifying, and made a change at the front end. In moto one I started off a little bit tight, and then kind of at the 10 minute mark I fell into a bit of a groove, put my head down and bum up and rode my own race, and just chipped away and got the win. In the second moto I was just concentrating on a good top-three start. That’s all I wanted and we came out second. I made a silly mistake and got passed, but I didn’t let it worry me, I just did my own thing and put in my own laps. There were two guys behind me giving me some heat, but overall we went pretty good – I was pretty happy with my first win. I’m looking forward to the sand rounds next. I know my bike works really well in the sand, and I ride good in the sand so I’m looking forward to them.” In MX2 Racing: KTM’s Riley Graham and Hamish Harwood finished on equal points for a share of seventh place on the day in a tough day for the MX2 men. Luke Clout won the round from Jed Beaton with Takeshi Katsuya finishing third. Hamish Harwood – “I’d call it a less than average weekend; the way I was feeling on the bike coming into it, I could have and should have done better. I came away with fourth in qualifying which was okay, but then I got a pretty average start in race one, and sort of went forward a few, back a few, but didn’t feel too bad. About halfway through I got real tight for a wee bit and I ended up seventh, which I wasn’t really that happy with. In the second I started third or fourth, but on the second or third lap I put my head down to dodge some roost and hit a few big bumps and had quite a big crash. It really annoyed me because I was feeling pretty good, and I hurt my shoulder and bent my bars, but I came back to 10th, but it’s all good we’ll train hard these next three weeks and jump back at Murray Bridge.”

HUSQVARNA BROADFORD DENIES HUSQVARNA’S YOUNG GUNS
The historic site of Broadford proved a tough nut to crack for Husqvarna Australia’s youthful factorybacked squad as round three of the MX Nationals unfolded at the hallowed Victorian location. Impressive 18-year-old MX1 rider Jesse Dobson kicked off the day by continuing his giant-killing form on the Husqvarna FC 450, finishing sixth in the opening Moto, however, the Queenslander just couldn’t find the groove in moto two and fell several times on his way to 11th. The result handed him eighth on the day and saw him slip one place in the MX Nationals standings to eighth overall, while Craig Anderson Racing’s Aaron Tanti had a day he’d rather forget with 14-17 finishes on Husqvarna FC 350. Blazing fast MX2 rookie Nathan Crawford’s charge hit a speed bump when he crashed while leading the first MX2 moto, then he fell again while charging back through the pack, this time at high speed, where he sustained a suspected shoulder injury which ruled him out for the rest of the day. Fellow Husqvarna FC 250 rider Luke Arbon also fell early in the first moto, and after getting up dazed, pulled over to inspect some possible front-end damage before finishing 21st. He rebounded somewhat in the second moto for 8th, but is hoping to turn his season around at his home round of Murray Bridge – just like he did in 2014. In the MXD category, Husqvarna-mounted class rookie Connor Tierney had some troubles with traffic, but still walked away with 6-10 scores for a share of fourth place in the under 19 championship. Jesse Dobson – FC 450: “Definitely not what I was looking for; it just didn’t feel like it was all there today and I just couldn’t put it together. In moto one I made it inside the top 10 but then dropped it. I couldn’t get straight back on the track so a few people got by me, but I made a few passes again and we ended up sixth which was solid. Moto two though I felt like I struggled with. I couldn’t find a flow and ride my own race, and
the consistency wasn’t there – I think I had about three crashes in that moto. Wasn’t real pumped on that one. We’ve got to work to do, I’ll go away do it and hopefully come out swinging in the sand.” Aaron Tanti – FC 350: “Today was a tough day. In the first moto I was running around eighth a while, but couldn’t maintain that pace and dropped back to 12th, then had a crash in the last few laps which put me back to 14th. Then in moto two I had a decent crash at the start and rode out the rest of it with a flat front tyre.” Nathan Crawford – FC 250 “I holeshotted of the first race and I was leading, but on the first lap I crashed and kind of hit my head and was a bit dazed. I got up, fell over a few times, and ended up getting back on my bike and probably did another five laps and was getting up towards the top 10 when I washed the front and landed on my shoulder in a fairly high speed section. I DNFed that moto, and then didn’t get cleared to ride the next one, so that was pretty much my day. I don’t really know the extent of the damage, but it’s pretty tender and sore at the moment, so I’m just going to get back to Brissy and get an X-ray on it just to see where I’m at, and make a decision from there.” Luke Arbon – FC 250 “It was a pretty terrible day really – we struggled with some bike set up on the hills. I felt pretty decent at the start of the first moto but just had a little crash and hit my head a bit and was a little bit dazed at first, then I thought something was wrong with the front end, so I pulled in, but there wasn’t much wrong – it was just that my bike setup was a little bit off, so I just struggled to the end. Last moto we made a heap of changes and the bike was a lot better. I felt really good and I got a decent start, but about halfway through I had about three laps when I got caught up behind someone, and my mind seemed to fade out. Then towards the end I began riding decent again and caught up to the guys who were holding me up at the start.

I went back to NZ and did a bit of riding there which got me back into the zone mentality and this helped with getting todays result”.
The duo raced tirelessly in moto 2 at an attempt to recreate the results from the first race. Adam managed to secure 4th place while John struggled to regain his pace after being caught in a flurry of bikes through tight initial turns and finishing up in 12th place.
Team Manager Troy Carrol was content with the performance in round 3 but is eager to build on the results saying, “A lot better this weekend. 1st moto with a second and third and we gained a lot of points for the championship. Were in a good position to comeback for the rest of the season. We are happy with the results today and hopefully we can keep it rolling for the next round”.
“I wanted to stay off the ground, I’ve had a few too many meetings with it so far this year. For this round I needed to avoid overthinking and overworking and focus on riding to my potential. The track has a good length and it is great for viewing. I was able to race the way I know and the favourable results came my way”, commented Adam Monea who is no stranger to the Broadford circuit having raced there in the previous two years. Adam followed his plan of staying upright and after recent testing on the track, team mechanics were able to tune the bike for the conditions. Adam said “Today was a step in the right direction with our first trip to the podium. It’s nice to walk away with a smile, the first two rounds were tough. This finish signifies that we’ve done well and we want to turn this into one better and keep working for a win. I can’t thank anyone in the team enough, they have been working tirelessly to get this result. I can’t be more proud of these boys. I also want to thank my sponsors, my family and friends and my girlfriend for supporting me. Also the fans who are on the fence, we can see you guys and I want to thank all of our supporters for making their way down for the round”. John made the journey back home (New Zealand), in the break between rounds where he practiced on his home track, enabling him to gel with the KX450F in a familiar setting. “The track was really good today, they prepared it well. There were lots of uphills and downhills which suited my bike. After riding the KX450F on my home track Ive learnt how it behaves to

Takeshi Katsuya cruised onto the podium in 3rd place overall for the second time during the series while Dylan Leary from Proformance Kawasaki Racing Team collected his best overall result of 7th place at round 3 of the MX Nationals in Broadford over the weekend. Takeshi of the Sony Action Cam Kawasaki Racing Team has again claimed a podium position after missing out in round 2 of the MX nationals. After practice and qualifying, the 4 time Japanese MX Champion declared the track to be similar to the Japanese circuits that he is familiar with. “The track was good, it was a bit different to the last time I was here but it is similar to the Japanese tracks so it suited me. We already have the perfect bike setup for this kind of track”, said Takeshi.

Kawasaki supported Takeshi, managed to take 4th position in the first moto and 3rd position in the second moto. “I didn’t get a great start in both races but I came from behind again. I gained a few points and I’m still in a great position for the championship which I’m comfortable with”, commented Takeshi before he thanked his sponsors. Dylan Leary of team Proformance Kawasaki Racing, began the day with 13th position in moto 1. After studying the data logging software on his KX250F between rounds, adjustments were made which enabled Dylan to hold 3rd place around turn 1 in the second moto. Dylan wrapped it up with a solid run to finish in 5th for the second race. “In the last round I crashed and made mistakes in just about every lap. I avoided doing that today and it shows with my results”, said Dylan. “The Kawasaki is unreal, I don’t have any doubt in the bike and I need to work with it to pull those holeshots. After the first few rounds I think that I have the fitness to run up the top for 30 minutes, I just need to work on being in the zone mentally during the races”. Team mate Alex Morris did not follow through to cross the finish line in the first MX2 moto due to suffering a mild concussion in a seemingly soft fall. “We were comfortable with the decision from Racesafe officials to not let Alex finish the race. He didn’t actually get

Round three of the MX Nationals was an up and down weekend, with chances of bad weather it somehow stayed away and produced a perfect race track which was great. Alex come out firing with a 10th in Qualifying which was great as it was his highest qualify position so far this year. Dylan was 17th I think it took a while for him to get used to the tricky Broadford circuit seems it was his first visit. Moto 1 saw both boys with average starts but battling each other. They both moved through the field as they traded places on the track a few times. They got up to 12th and 13th before Alex unfortunately had a crash which caused a mild concussion and would ultimately end his day. Dylan ended up 13th. Between motos we studied Dylan’s start on our GET data logging software to try and better ourselves for the next moto start. It helped as Dylan rounded turn one in 3rd and charged hard all moto for his first top 5 of the year finishing 5th. This gave Dylan 7th overall for the day and moved him forward in the championship hunt. DEEPRUTS Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of the M.A.D Trainers corner. After three rounds of the series the racing action in each class has been stacked full of talent, emerging new championship contenders and full of drama. There has been one major similarity after the first three rounds however, and that is the tracks riding surface. Hard packed clay dirt and more importantly DEEP RUTS. How does this affect the racing, the rider’s abilities to make passes and move forward? Is it really all down to the start at tracks like Horsham, Appin and Broadford? In this article I will discuss all of the above plus our move into the softer and loamy dirt of the next two rounds Murray Bridge and Coolum.

Hard packed ruts are great for corner speed. In racing, if you find yourself in a two way battle with another rider you will be able to find areas on the track where two fast ruts link a section together. Cutting inside to outside and back again through different sections will eventually lead to passing a slower rider. However, this is for a one on one battle. How often at the MX Nationals do you see only two rider battles going on around the track? Not very often!! Starts and track position play a crucial role in a racers results on this riding surface. If you find yourself out of the top five on the opening lap, chances are for the first ten minutes of the moto you will have at least three to five riders around you in each section of the track. With typically two fast ruts per section.. well you do the math. Lots of follow the leader, waiting to set up a pass and fighting for track position. Passes take a long time to set up with a stacked field on a rutted track and by the time a rider is clear the lead back has often checked out.

Widely believed to be a huge title threat, Monz finished sixth at Horsham and eighth at Appin. But Broadford saw a hungrier, better-starting Monea emerge and his second overall for the day is one that will hopefully turn his season around and ignite his campaign. 59

It really doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get much better than that and we can imagine the cartwheels Jeff Leisk and the entire KTM team are doing after yet another rock-solid display by Luke Styke and Kirk Gibbs at Broadford. Unsurprisingly, the pairing are first and second in the championship with a third of the series in the books. Whatever the KTM team is doing behind the scenes, they better not change a thing. < LUKE CLOUT (MX2 1st Overall) Right from the get-go at Broadford, defending MX2 champion Luke Clout was the man to beat, setting a qualifying time that was almost two seconds faster than anyone else. That was just a preamble as the New South Welshman cracked two ripping starts and dominated both motos. If Clouty carries the form he displayed into the rest of the championship, the MX2 field is going to be relegated to mere spectators.

After a renewed Dan Reardon blasted his way to Super Pole, he and Kade Mosig were charging along in first and second place early in moto one when the two clashed in a corner and both went down. Reardon’s water-pump was destroyed in the process, while Mosig limped home in 12th and Craig Dack could be seen biting chunks out of fence posts in the pits. Even Reardon’s second in moto two couldn’t soften the blow that Broadford dealt to the team.

WE FIND OUT WHAT CAUSED THE BIG CHANGE FROM RACER TO COMMENTATOR
For those who don’t know, how did the deal with NRGTV come about? Kevin Williams actually spoke to me at the end of last year, and asked if I was going to race this year, and I kind of laughed and said ‘yeah of course’. Then I crashed at Brisbane and Kev came and spoke to me in the back of the ambulance and said ‘are you sure you’re going to race next year?’ At that point I wasn’t too sure anymore. I had been asking about the commentary stuff and Kevin said that he would keep in contact, so it sort of went from there. We managed to get everything sorted out with the help of Swann Insurance who have been a personal sponsor of mine, and after three rounds on the microphone I’m really enjoying it! How are you finding being on the other end of the microphone so far? It’s definitely different, and it’s been awesome to see the other side of things at the races. It wasn’t that hard not racing at the first round, but it’s definitely different watching from the sidelines every weekend. I’m really enjoying the experience with the live streaming and commentary – it’s been awesome to meet new people and just see how the other side works.

Are you surprised at how things work on the ‘other side’?
Do you think you made the right choice to take some time off?
It is a lot more involved than I ever thought. I understand now that there is a lot more that goes into putting the MX Nationals together. It’s been really good to see that stuff – it’s definitely not just as simple as training during the week and turning up on the weekends, there’s a whole crew of people that make the MX Nationals happen, and it’s been really cool to be a part of that.
Yeah absolutely. Either way, I wouldn’t be able to race at the moment, or this year for that matter. And without making that decision I wouldn’t have gotten the opportunity with NRGTV. I’m lucky enough to still be able to be involved with the sport that I love, and I’m learning a bunch of stuff in the process which is really cool.
What was the main reason you decided to retire from racing professionally? It was purely just my injuries, and complicated injuries. There was no injury for me that was ever just simple. From the femurs to my leg, and even my leg still isn’t right, and won’t be right for at least another month, so it wasn’t that I retired I guess, it was just I needed some time to let my body heal. I think in the past I might have tried to come back to quick, and I really needed to give my body the chance to get better for once.
Is it difficult watching from the sidelines and not racing? It was easy at the first round because I knew there was absolutely no chance that I could be riding. As my leg gets a little bit better I am starting to miss racing a bit and just the competitive nature of the sport.
I take my hat off to presenters who do it so well and make it look like it comes naturally to them.

Are you enjoying being at the races a lot more since stepping off the bike and onto a microphone? Yeah it’s a lot more relaxing. The pressure isn’t there to have bikes and gear ready on the weekends and you aren’t worrying if you’ve done enough training during the week. I can just arrive with my backpack and really enjoy what I’m doing. I feel like this is a great opportunity to learn from this experience. If I ever do return to racing I think I would be a lot more relaxed. What I’ve noticed about this role is that you can take so much more in when you’re relaxed, and there really is so much that happens at the track that you don’t realise when you’re just going to the track as a racer. Are you more comfortable in front of the camera as a rider or as a presenter? Rider by far (laughs)! I feel personally I have a lot to learn on this side, not to say I think I’m great at being a rider and being interviewed either though. Having now been on this side of the fence, I take my hat off to presenters who do it so well and make it look like it comes naturally to them. I’m determined to learn though and I think that this experience will definitely help me to be a more well rounded person. I’m really enjoying the whole experience, and it’s been awesome to step outside of my comfort zone and try something completely different. Are you surprised at how nerve racking it is being in front of a camera and microphone? I am. Joe Stevens and Kevin have both been awesome to work with, and actually the whole crew from NRGTV and WEM have been awesome in making this transition a lot easier for me. It is different, I don’t so much find it difficult, you just have to speak right and you can’t swear (laughs).

What do you miss most about racing? Just the competitive nature of racing. Obviously the hard work that goes in, and then the reward when you do well. It’s very rewarding when you’ve worked so hard to see that pay off which is what I would say I miss most. What do you not miss about racing? Injuries! And you know just those hard days you have when it might be really dusty and hot and you don’t even want to ride or train. Other than that there isn’t really a lot that I don’t miss. Every job has it’s positives and negatives, and I don’t think when you call riding a dirt bike your job that there is much to complain about.
Any likelihood of us seeing Brenden Harrison making a ‘Dan Reardon’ style comeback in the future? Umm I think there definitely is, I just don’t know 100 per cent when. I really want to get all of the metal out of my leg (femur and shin) and then depending on how long that takes, I’m thinking I want to give it a good six to eight months to let that heal before thinking about bikes again. I do want to come back at some point and I want to ride a 450 so it’s definitely something I will be looking to do in the future. Do you feel that your lifestyle has changed a lot since stepping back from racing? Yeah I definitely think so. I’m a little bit heavier than I was last year (laughs). I’m obviously not as strict with my diet or having a bit of fun with friends either. There’s less routine in my life now which has definitely been enjoyable for a bit, plus it’s allowed me to step into this new role with the MX Nationals.

In the late 1990’s, film industry figure and stunt coordinator Guy Norris, attended one of my Dargle fiveday Advanced training camps. At the conclusion of the camp, Guy explained that he may have some work for me on a movie in the near future. At the time, I did not think much of the offer, but four years later he called me and explained that he had a role for me on a new Mad Max film that was in pre production stages. I was extremely excited by the opportunity. Initially I helped with motorcycle testing, but I was soon employed as a specialist stunt rider and assistant specialist stunt coordinator. I began work in 2003. The Sydney based production company, Kennedy Miller Mitchell, purchased Yamaha motorcycles to begin development of the ‘hero’ machines. I created a list and invited many top dirt bike riders to a riding test at Stockton beach to select 15 positions. Soon after selecting riders to test the bikes, the development of the film was suddenly postponed. This was due to ongoing concerns with George Miller’s work load and Broken Hill’s appearance which was one of the possible filming locations. In 2007, Guy called me again and told me the film was back on. We started up again with a fresh look in the creation and development of the movie machines.

Depending on our role on the day, particularly if we were close to the camera we would sometimes be called in early and spend 1-1.5 hours getting makeup done. To fill in time when we were waiting to film to travel out to the film set, all the stunt personal would go to the Stunt waiting room where they usually would do more exercising in order to maintain the movie body appearance and general fitness. Before and after body shots of many of the stunt personal show how much work each of us put in during the production period. We would work 10hr days for 5 or 6 days and we would also try and train 6 days a week. We all had mountain bikes which allowed us to train and commute around town for shopping, important meetings at the coffee shop or out to dinner. Due to make up and costume your cannot see who is riding the bikes during the film but I appear on screen many times in the film, I even get killed three times in the movie. The Silicon dummys are a work of art that are used in the death scenes. One of more difficult stunts I was involved with required me to ride along the top of a moving tanker while pulling out an Uzi Gun, only to be shot by Charlize Theron’s character, Imperator ‘Furiosa’. I did not get to rehearse this stunt as I was a last minute call-up, when Rob Jones was busy with other important work.

The only major injury during filming was when Michael Addison overshot a ramp to ramp jump and hit his head on a handlebar sword attachment. He cracked a few teeth, suffered bad bruising and required many stitches. Incredibly, he is a tough guy and only took one day off and returned to work as per normal. There was however, a more serious injury in our team, but it was on a social ride on one of the days off. Mechanic Matt, crashed in the massive sand dunes around our town and fractured a vertebra, keeping him out of action for 6 weeks. The bikes were mainly Yamaha 09’ WR/YZ’s and Tenere 660’s. There were also a few KTM 690s, three Gas Gas trials bikes, a couple of Harley’s, a BMW R1100GS and R100, a Royal Enfield and a Gold Wing Honda. Matt and his team built the bikes with the conceptual designs by Colin Gisbon. Matt did an excellent job and we did not have one break down during production. Some bikes were setup with SX-spec suspension to deal with huge airtime and hard landings. Now imagine how hard it was to ride some of these heavier bikes laden with more gas cans, water bottle etc in the deep beach sand scenes!! Our team performed all the motorcycle stunt work, but we had help from other stunt team members on the film including Mark Tearle, Cameron Ambridge, Darren Mitchell, Jon Iles, Judd Wild, Shea Adams and Glenn Suter. All of these guys were great riders and fantastic to work with. Likewise, we were a huge help to them and filled-in for many of the car/vehicle stunt work when needed. We wouldn’t usually include full factory riders in this feature, but considering Phillips’ limited experience in this country and his late arrival as replacement to Jake Moss at Kawasaki, his form at Broadford turned heads. Third in moto one was by far the highlight for the Kiwi, and while 12th in a trying second outing wasn’t ideal, sixth place for the round no doubt put him on our radar last weekend.

When Katsuya finished on the podium at Coolum last year in his guest appearance at the final round, we never, ever thought he would be back challenging the kids for this championship fulltime in 2015. But, three rounds in and the Japanese ace has landed on the podium twice so far and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re now believers that heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a legitimate title threat. At Broadford he was fourth in moto one and third in the second, resulting in third overall behind the youthful Serco combination. 83

After an injury-riddled couple of seasons on a mixture of teams, Stapleton started to show his true potential at Broadford with fourth overall via 6-4 moto results. With a sizable following down in Victoria and a solid team behind him alongside Luke Wilson, Stapleton should only get stronger from this point and itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s good to see. Not only were his results improved, but his lap times were close to the podium finishers as well.

After two rounds of standing on the third step of the podium, KTM mounted Styke proved that consistency pays off – taking a moto win and a third place, to eventually claim round honors. In a controversy packed moto one, CDR Yamaha dished out edge of your seat style racing, when teammates Daniel Reardon and Kade Mosig came together while in first and second, which saw Reardon DNF and Mosig finish in 12th.

With the MX1 class providing a mixed bag of results, Styke’s consistency proved to pay off – finishing round three on the top step of the podium, ahead of NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Adam Monea in second, and team mate Kirk Gibbs in third. 91

Broadford overall winner, you must be pretty happy right about now and the moto one win as well.
Yeah for sure, I had to get the monkey off my back and I felt like I was overdue for the win. In the first moto I rode a bit tight early on, but the two Yamaha boys made a big mistake, I capitalised on it and rode my own race. Monea seemed like he was giving me heat all weekend in both motos, but I kept a cool head and tried not to over-ride the track, which was easy to do. In the second moto I just wanted to get myself in a good position with a top three start and chip away at that one. I started off a little bit tight again, then Monea was giving me some heat again and I wasn’t sure if it was for the overall or not, but I was just like ‘no-one’s passing me here’ and it was a good weekend – I can’t thank the team enough. Me and Gibbs are on the podium every time and we’re putting in solid results, so it’s showing and the hard work’s paying off. I’m looking forward to some sand rounds now and yeah, it’s going to be great.

What went through your mind when you saw the two CDR boys on the ground in that first moto?
I thought they were silly mate. It was on lap three, you know what I mean, when they both went down there was a long way, 30 minutes to go, and it’s not won in the first three laps. It’s up to them what they want to do, but I was just riding my own race and like I said, I capitalised on it and I’m sure they’re going to have words later.
I’ll tell you what, you’ve been consistent so far though with three rounds back in Australia and in MX1, three times on the podium. Is that part of the game plan or just a result of the hard work? I think it’s just through the hard work we put in over the off-season and pre-season. I just felt like the first three tracks weren’t going to suit me, so obviously to get a win today is a bonus. I look forward to the sand rounds coming up, the next two rounds we’ll get some more solid points on the board and keep building from where we are.

On a circuit prepared well enough to rival the 2000 MX GP, Clout dominated the Motul MX2 class, claiming his first clean sweep for 2015. After qualifying in number one position Clout kicked off his round three campaign in spectacular fashion, taking the first moto win for the day ahead of JCR Yamaha’s Jay Wilson in second, and fellow Serco pilot Jed Beaton who took third.

It’s the first ever double race win for me” “We have worked on my starts and it’s showing. Two top five starts and into the lead in the first few laps is what I need to be doing. “I have a 20 point lead in the championship now so I’m just going to take this three week break to work hard and come out swinging at Murray Bridge.”

Despite the holeshot being claimed by Penrite Honda Wilson MX athlete Geran Stapleton, Clout once again took a commanding race lead to finish in number one position, followed by teammate Beaton and Kawasaki mounted Takeshi Katsuya who crossed the line in second and third respectively. With Clout claiming both race wins, the thrills and spills came from the action happening behind him. Jay Wilson copping two in race penalties which saw him relegated to 15th in moto two, while Luke Arbon (SD3 Husqvarna) and Wade Hunter were also victims of penalties in race two, which saw their overall results take a hit today. At the conclusion of the round however, it was once again Serco Yamaha’s Clout on the top step, sharing the podium with teammate Jed Beaton who claimed second overall, followed by Takeshi Katsuya (Kawasaki) who claimed third for the round.

In moto two, Madden’s Suzuki machine was once again first into turn one, this time ahead of KTM’s Wade Carter and Kaleb Barham (KTM). By the time the chequered flag flew on race two, Carter secured the second moto race win ahead of Jayden Rykers (KTM) and Todd who claimed third. Thankfully third was all Todd required from the final moto in order to secure the round overall – the GYTR Yamaha rider finishing on the top step of the podium, ahead of Carter and Madden respectively.
