My parents are Thidar Htwe and Maung Maung Hla, I also have a younger sister, Sandy Htwe. My biggest influences are my parents. Their dedication and hard work to help me and my sisters live a good life helps me get through my hardest obstacles. I realized that everything they’ve done was for their kids. Immigrant parents might not show their love directly but as I grew older, I started noticing the great sacrifices they made went just to put a smile on my face. My future goals is being a neurosurgeon. Ever since I was young I’ve always wanted to be in the medical field. My mom would always tell me that I would al ways buy the fake surgical toys and preform “opera tions” on her, so we would joke around and say it was in my blood. I’ve only recently made my mind about neurosurgery because of my personal life issues regarding my uncle. He got into an accident with a brain injury, since my mom couldn’t speak english I would translate for her. Constantly talking to doctors and nurses made me want to study the brain. Yes I do know Burma, it’s where I’m from. I have been to Burma 3 times in my life. The first time I went I was 3, the second time I went when I was 9, and the last time I went I was 13. Since I am Ro hingya myself, I feel terrible ev erytime I think of the Rohingya crisis. The awful conditions they live in makes the whole situation with the military even worse as the Rohingya have to flee to other countries for refuge. I wish they can all coexist with no conflicts and also get rid of xenophobic ideas that the Burmese military portrays. As for the entirety for Burma and the situation going on, I feel like there’s nothing the civilians can really do. If they speak out, the Burmese civilians get killed. I want people around the world to gain more insight on how cruel the Burmese government is so that we can at least help the civilians of Burma. Being the child of immigrants comes with both hardships and ease. First of all, like most immigrant children, theres a culture difference or like a culture “mix.” The culture mix ing caused me to face a large amount od confusion when I was younger, because when I went to school I was sur rounded by an “American way of life” rather than at home. At home, I was raised by Burmese standards and I often clashed the two causing this weird mix ture of chaos and uncertainty . I tried balancing the two but both standards didnt seem to ever have a middle point, Burmese standards were just different from American standards. As a child who was young and influential, I often had many identity crisis’, I didnt know whether to be American or Burmese. Unfortunately just as I finally decided that I could be both American and Burmese, I found out that I was Rohingya. Now that was new and though I’ve been advocating for the Rohingya, I never knew I was actually Rohingya. Though it took some time adjusting, I feel comfortable with my identity. Another thing about being a Burmese American is living with the constant pressure from fam ily. Especially with academics, being constantly compared to with other successful Burmese kids. My parents would always push me to do well in school but nothing seemed to meet their expectations. Of course, my par ents only wanted the best for me but I didnt know that growing up. Overall, I’m extremely thankful to my parents for their sacrifices that I couldn’t see until recently.

The Summer I Turned Pretty is a story that has multiple different points of view, and is your typical teen drama that involves seri ous topics that may relate to readers including divorce, loss, love, and jealousy. There’s Belly’s mother and Sussanah wrestling with their own issues while part of the story is focused on the Fisher brothers, or Conrad and Jeremiah. There’s Belly as well, dealing with the fact that this Summer is going to be different since she’s matured mentally and physically. This is supposed to be the dif ferent Summer from the previous ones; it’s in the book title! The book certainly supports the idea of maintaining and bonding with long-time friendships and the value in strong family ties.One thing I really love about this book is that most of the characters mentioned are each a main character that adds onto the story. Her problems and insecurities are easy to relate to and even mentioned in your everyday life. I would say that there were two sides to the book that everyone wanted to root for; which brother to choose? Readers may have a hard time deciding which “romance” to support since each ‘relationship’ had nothing but miscommunication and love triangles. Then again, that was what really brought the book together; who will she end up with in the end? Who does Belly choose? There were definitely parts of the book that made me switch opinions of which person Belly should end up with. Every page I flipped after each chapter not only made me switch decisions, but also had me almost in an existential crisis. I kept wanting to read and only read more until I found out who she ended up with in the end. There is also an Amazon series based on the book and I would definitely recommend it. Not only is the soundtrack of the entire series amazing and well chosen, but it really shows how each character acts and gives you a visual image of how each character within the book looks like. This book is also a trilogy, so there are two more books that lead to the sequel, adding onto the series. Jenny Han does an amazing job of showing the true feelings of younger teenage girls dealing with their own romances in life. There is also some asian rep resentation written in the books (as well as in the streaming T.V show) as Belly, her brother, and her mother are Asian. This book does make you cringe at some moments because it’s a typical cheesy teenage romance book that takes place on a beach, but it is definitely worth the read if you’re into types of books that involve a love triangle!
SUMMARY: When each Summer begins, Belly (or Isabel) leaves her school life behind and escapes to Cousins Beach, the place she has spent every sum mer of her life. Not only does the beach house mean home away from home, but her favorite people are there: Sussanah, her mother’s best friend, and her songs, Conrad and Jeremiah. Belly has been chasing Conrad for as long as she can remember, and more than anything, she hopes this Summer will be different. Despite dis tractions from a new guy named Cam and lingering looks from Conrad’s brother, Jeremiah, Belly’s heart be longs to Conrad. Will he offer his to her? Will this be the Summer that changes everything?
